HESI A2 Entrance Exam

2024.05.14 20:37 Sea_Charge_2684 HESI A2 Entrance Exam

Hi guys!
I was incredibly nervous about taking my HESI but I surprisingly did really well! Here are my absolutes to studying:
  1. USE NURSEHUB!! It’s totally worth it, helped give realistic questions. I was using a Mometrix book and it wasn’t helpful at all. I only paid $15 for NurseHub and watched all of the videos. If I had more time I would watch them all over again. Vocab was word for word essentially. There is also a YouTube video by AllofJenny that also had pretty much all of her words on the test.
  2. Anatomy use this quiz let and KNOW IT! https://quizlet.com/680471316/hesi-a2-anatomy-physiology-v1v2-flash-cards/ Pretty much 3/4 of my questions came from this quizlet so I highly recommend it. NurseHub was also useful.
  3. Know your fractions and conversions! My math portion was 100% fractions, proportions, and conversions.
  4. Critical thinking was literally just common nursing questions like who would you take care of first etc. I don’t know if I did well on this to be honest and is kind of confusing but if you’ve practiced critical thinking at all you should be fine. There’s also some quizlets out there for it but I didn’t have time to review them.
  5. Reading comprehension was relatively easy. Asked a lot of questions about conclusions and things that can be implied or inferred.
Overall I did pretty well and someone almost psyched me out by saying they’ve taken it before and it was hard but trust me when I say that this exam was maybe like a 4/10 in difficulty. Study your vocabulary, make sure you know how to solve a proportion, and know your anatomy of what does what. You’ve got this :)

2024.05.14 11:52 MirkWorks Notes on Recent Episode I

Here. And I’d like to start by noticing that Steve Sailer is obviously Delicious Taco’s dad. Having said this.
Good episode. Lots of engagement which I suppose is a net positive for all involved. Obviously a lot of the injury stems from a distortion. The episode’s content fantasized and in fantasy warped into something constituting a threat (no, an outright assault) to the listener’s person. One can simply listen to the episode and see that some (in fact the bulk) of the negative responses are from people reacting to some spectral absent-presence rather than to what is actually being said over the course of the 2 hour long episode. The voices and the discourse have instead been shaped into sonic receptacle containing the reflection of something wildly ugly. Injuriously ugly.
Past few days have been brutal. Found myself doom-viewing the main sub, should know better at this age. Feels like I’ve been transmogrified into an absurd and wretched thing. Must've transgressed against a gnome or something. Fascinating to think about.
I would like nothing more than to shame you.
Miami Summer is a killer. Urine is blood-orange. And my mother deserves better sons.
Why would A&D do this?
Witnessing the rankest comments. In bygone age I’d found them tolerable. Having imagined them delivered by high society homosexual. A damned dandy; chubby, sinister, and flamboyant. Capri on a stick limply held between index and middle fingers, twirling wrist ash’ing on expensive Persian rug. The blurry ghosts of his mother and the kid brother who drowned in the pond all those years ago glaring at him from far-off corner. Clearing throat he launches into sing-song slander head peeling back cackling at his own wickedness. Vile and venomous but charming. Instead what we get is 30+ year old mentally-ill men. Men whose Twitter activity has atrophied their cock and balls. Genitals withering away like the Worker's State, in its place a gasping cloaca, worry not I can clock em from miles away. The odious cloaca-havers are soon joined by ruined drug-addled children and the other women. They talk about A&D in disgusting ways. This is unfair and nasty. I confess to being angry. Sweating blood-specked kerosene. Let the scent fill up the empty air between us. My wrath singeing those overgrown nose hairs.
Of the two I think Anna is the one that inspires the harshest parasocial spite. So much so that I’d recommend she take some protective measures against evil eye and tongue. Maybe take baths with hyssop herb, rose water perfume, and holy water.
It’s as if Anna Khachiyan is a Giant Floating Vagina with teeth and a noticeable overbite. Viewed from another angle it transforms into a Madonna encircled by cherubim. Perhaps we are cruel to Anna in order to be kind to our mothers.
All very pre-Oedipal.
Had to step back and parse it out. Anna draws a comparison between herself and Sailer while also asking him a great question,
07:12-07:49
Anna: “I started reading it during the pandemic because it was the pandemic. I was pregnant and bored and I really relate to you as a person who everyone thinks is like evil and monstrous on the internet, but is actually like quite agreeable and mild mannered in real life. And I was going to ask you this question last, but I may as well just ask it now. How do you feel about your new found popularity? And especially, how do you feel about the fact that you have been effectively adopted by or identified with the hard right?”
The first part of the above extract, the sympathetic recognition, brings to mind a bit of 20th century Hermetic theory concerning harmful thought-forms. Our unconscious self-destructive impulses animating the fantasy-phantasm of the other. Inhabiting their shape. Gaining a degree of autonomy. This artificial entity is vampiric by default, provoking what the Czech magician Franz Bardon calls a "magical persecutory complex"... He goes into detail about such entities in Step VI of his seminal work, Initiation into Hermetics. Describing different types of artificial elementals and phantasms along with details on how to consciously go about creating and dissipating them. One of those artificial psychic entities, the one that concerns us, he calls the schemata. Bardon details two variants, one connected with paranoid persecutory fantasies and the other with erotic obsession. The first type comes about when someone who is “easily excitable, easily influenced or self-important” (Narcissist?) has a run in with another person who has, to put it mildly, a memorable visage and dark personality. The schemata is born from the phantasm modeled after this demonic-looking disagreeable person. The victim begins to attribute all kinds of minor inconveniences to the influence of the ugly person. Deludes themselves into thinking that the ugly/disagreeable person is a powerful black magician. Everything appears to reinforce their paranoid delusions. The schema grows in power feeding off the anxieties of their creatohost. The person might end up committing suicide. This was the persecutory schemas desire, having achieved its goal Bardon notes, “how great is the shock when such a spirit realizes on the mental plane that he has committed a very successful magical suicide. What a bitter disappointment! The demonic looking person, however, has no idea what happened; he was actually only the means to an end.”
God gave us eyes so that we might notice things.
The way I see it:
Being social animals the subject of our fantasy, of our fixations, is the fantasy of the other. What makes the human Human is not that we desire but rather that we desire the desire of the other. An excess desire. We fantasize about what the other is fantasizing and enjoying. Our fantasy of the fantasy of the other is the outlines a fundamental lack within our person, a negativity. Experienced as a splitting of consciousness. Intuiting this lack, becoming aware of it, and attempting to articulate it, we are self-consciousness. This negativity or void is in psychoanalytic terms, the unconscious. We likewise intuit that there had once been some original state. One without lack and contradiction. A state of fullness, without the division between self and object. A harmonious whole. A pure consciousness or as Freud refers to it in Civilization and its Discontents an oceanic feeling. The Original Desire, one that is authentically my own, which was not the desire of the other but which unites our desires in itself. This desire is the extinction of all desires.
The eye that perceives the lovely is at once the eye that perceives what I lack. Perceiving this lack, which explains my present condition, I covet. This is an evil eye. The lover’s gaze is of the same type as the infirm or pathic gaze. Reminded of Zizek’s formulation of one of Hegel’s insights, “Evil resides in the very gaze which perceives Evil all around itself" itself a variation of Meister Eckhart’s “the eye through which I see God is the same eye through which God sees me.” The recognition of evil, the ability to see and judge evil, stems from our ability to recognize disparity. This disparity is already present within our own person, the split-consciousness. The feeling cognized, the awareness of our condition as beings separated from the whole. The clairvoyance of the tyrant and the philosopher.
Suppose that psychopathology is born from our inability to recognize an image as an image.
I intuit something more in this person, something they’re hiding. It can’t just be envy, no. It has to be because I can feel that this thing they’re hiding is sinister. It can’t just be that I feel animosity towards this person, no. It has to be because this person is evil and not just an isolated evil but rather a symptom of a much larger evil. An evil that is responsible for all the suffering in the World, for why my World isn’t the way it should be. It can’t just be attraction, no. It has to be that I intuit something more in this person, something hidden, that I must destroy in order to go on living.
If vile shit comes to mind (as vile things often do, especially when one is immersed in ambient algorithmically-summoned vileness, namely outrage and atrocity porn) they won't affirm it to themselves or try to justify or rationalize it or present it as a rational political stance. And they don’t abstract this particular form of vileness into the primary lens through which they view and interpret cultural phenomena. Unreflexive racial animosity is ugly and fetid. We’re capable of recognizing it, feeling it, as something pathological. We’re also capable of laughing at it. Laughing at ourselves. Look at what our ladies have to say about Stuart Seldowitz (the dude who went viral harassing a halal street vendor) in I’ll Be Missinger. “He sucks,” “he’s a loser,” “he’s obviously sick,” and that he gives the impression of someone who lives alone, will die alone, and will be found weeks or even months after the fact.
Perhaps Red Scare is special in how it manages to elicit absurd, wildly inappropriate responses from listeners. Vulgar and revelatory was it? Steve Sailer elicits a similar response and has become an expert in turning said absurd reactions to his advantage. Generally the cooler-head in any given exchange. While the other person shouts obscenities at a ghost, smashing fists against the post, looking crazy, like a proper hysteric. Sailer breaks the fourth-wall, making eye-contact with the would-be noticer, with a little shake of the head, a little chuckle, a little shrug… “you’re noticing right? See what I have to put up with? Imagine these people defining my legacy.” Still he seems to take it with the good humor of an uncle who will still call you on your birthday, despite your drunken outburst during holiday get-together he will admit to not having resisted the temptation to provoke you, it use to be fun, recall all the cool bands I introduced you too? We use to be best buds, “do you really think anything I’ve said merits this sort of response? Honestly?”
Has to be a cheap trick. A technique employed by an old trickster in decades long honing of craft. Maybe not. Maybe what we see is precisely what we get. Most of the very upsetting things being jokes sincerely intended to lighten the mood. Steve Sailer doesn’t care about the particular political orientation of his audience. He just cares that he has an audience. Grateful for the fans he has. Nonetheless happy that they’re not seething malcontent racists. Even if one disagrees with the methodology, the heuristic, the conclusions. That’s secondary, perhaps even tertiary to the recognition sought. His craftsmanship as a writer.
Why I loved his conflict with Will Stancil. Stancil inspired a lot of pondering for me. Putting things in place…
01:29:22-01:29:28
Anna: “You come for the race science and stay for the prose-styling and vivid story-telling.”
In trying to survive as a writer exiled from Mainstream Conservative media (ConInc) during the Bush Jr years. In fact, correct me if I’m wrong but the cancelation that actually impacted Steve Sailer, setting him down the path we find him in, was brought about not by blue-haired hall monitor millennial leftists but by his “fellow” Conservatives. I imagine that he just went with whoever was willing to take him adapting to the editorial standards and audience sensibilities of the publications willing to provide him succor. Not charity mind you but an ability to engage in his own little labor of love.
Read some Sailer. Might get into that later. But that’s the initial impression I got from Steve. Would be utterly mortified if memorialized as a Racialist Ideologue rather than as an entertaining and thought-provoking journalist. Think I also benefited from seeing how he’s actually received by people who are navigating through (or in certain cases, are mired in) the marginal “Hard Right”-spaces or the Rightwing Digital Ghetto. End up realizing that he isn’t hateful, that what you see is precisely what you get, that he privileges craft over ideology, that his reception and exile from Neocon dominated media outlets (remember these are the people gushing ecstatic over the US invasion of Iraq, manufacturing consent for our adventures in the Middle East) was exceedingly unfair but that he nonetheless managed to persevere. And that he really never goes beyond Norm McDonald in terms of his sardonic wit or The Boondocks animated series in terms of his criticisms. His normality is a great source of stability and comfort for his readers; “noticing” and speculating about these topics doesn’t necessarily lead to one becoming a seething racist.
Returning for a moment to Will Stancil, this was what he inspired:
As the last man standing I spend countless hours immersed in detailed fantasies about the coming apocalypse and my enemy's bliss. A dumb and wicked happiness proportional to my suffering. Easy to imagine other people happy. Hearts unbroken. Unburdened, hydrated, sexually satisfied, debt-free, lucky, successful in all business endeavors. Brute, jezebel, schemer, parasite, rival, betrayer... the whole lot of them thriving. Frolicking in my mind's eye. When the time comes I won't forget that they were happy while...others...suffered.
Find that trying to void your mind of all thought or sit perfectly still for 10 minutes. End up feeling like something requires much less energy from us than nothing. Causes coalescing. Conspiring, to what ends?
You see. The very same principle appears to be at work here. Same pathological base that undergirds genuine racial or ethnic animosity. Fantasizing about the other’s enjoyment and being unable to distinguish between the persecutory Phantasm and the actual human being whose shape it appropriates.
Had a friend recommend forgetting. Forgetting is a dialectical exercise, first you have to acknowledge the thing living rent free in your head and acknowledge its origins... then you have to take the steps to stop feeding it. Letting the thought-form dissolve. Let it be put to rest. Reminded of the practice Orthodox Christian contemplatives call Nepsis.
Other approaches as well, acknowledging the presence of anima veiled in shadow.
But listen…
The podcasts I consume, are a reflection of me as a person. Being what I associate and consume. What does it say about me in particular? Reveal about me? That they should have Steve Sailer on the pod. Settling down. Perhaps some responses could be understood in this light. That a Sailer episode reflects poorly on the listener. Constituting a great betrayal of the love and energy and time I have dedicated over the years to you.
I’m not a racist.
Show me your likes on Twitter and I’ll tell you who you are. The most punitive and brutal god. The idea of the AI nu-god being this, utilizing that standard, is horrifying. Show me your likes on Twitter and I’ll tell you who you are, everything you are, and whether or not you qualify to live.
Shamed, I quietly remove the upvote I gave to the hysterical person and the downvote I gave to him.
Hysteria like a yawn is an empathic contagion.
Back to Anna it’s not because she’s ugly and it sucks that she might nurse this delusion. I actually think Anna is really pretty. Rather I think it’s because she’s a mom. She registers as a maternal figure. That’s one of the reasons I think people respond to her the way they do. As stated earlier. We are cruel to Anna in order to forgive our moms.
[To be continued: Wherein I say horrible things that should never be said to the people I claim to love. Will also interrogate Sailor Socialism]

2024.05.13 06:46 Skeptical_dude12 Body armoring

Anybody else feel like this:
I’m 27. Over the last 2 years, I’ve been growing increasingly aware of my symptoms, and my history of them based on memory (pre-adolescence.
Though, it is by-far—and by no question—that the most incredulous symptom that I have found is the extensive body armoring. 3 Reasons.
  1. I had no awareness of it whatsoever prior to all this. I was unaware I had muscle tension.
  2. Global muscle tension. It’s everywhere. When I do EMDR and relax, I feel like an air mattress deflating. Almost as if I were Michelin man. It’s insane.
  3. I have found this muscle tension to be a root cause for other symptoms. Once I deflate, I begin feeling emotions I never had. Fundamentally speaking—Feeling the room, like I never had. Experiencing Music—understanding it’s message, not just the tune. All throughout these years, I was teased for seeming “like I was high” all the time.. it had become my identity Now I perform better at my workplace (Nurse) by being attentive—and thereby not grinding through each day with a baseline/expected number of little omissions—that I constantly get chirped at for. It’s like experiencing life in color again. Up until now, I have essentially structured my entire life around this low-grade disassociation that I laid in bed and did nothing, ruminated—Structured entirely around defense mechanisms and avoidance. Obviously it’s no simple on-switch, and I’m generalizing a bit here— it is a bitch getting myself to feel again.—but it is just so damn crazy.; now, essentially, I feel like I took part of a limitless pill.
Over the past month, I’ve been honing in on this and developing a routine. My feelings start to release when I (a) prod my abdomen with my thera stick while (b) watching self-administered EMDR on YouTube, while (c) laying in bed, and (d) penchantly deep breathing for (e) an extended period). Then, and only then, will I start to deflate like a tire tube. But oh is it nice.
I mean, it seems no one shares this same type of stemming/rooted experience. Where everything comes from muscle tension? I read it in the Pete Walker book and surf Reddit..but I know it’s different for everybody. can anyone else relate—to any degree?

2024.05.12 19:38 Mac-Attack-62 How to (Possibly) Avoid End of Semester Begging Emails!

I am happy to state that it has been over three year since I have received an email from a student asking one or many of the following...
  1. "Could you round-up a point (or more) to a higher grade I need it to..."
a. "...keep from failing."
b. "...keep my financial aid."
c. "...to get into Nursing, Engineering. etc college."
d. "...I need to keep my 4.0."
  1. "Is it possible to make-up an exam and/or (an assignment).
  2. "Yes, I know I missed a lot of class this semester, and I have read your syllabus, but c ould you reconsider and/or meet with you." (Of course this is the student that has not attended class or turn in may assignments, AND never has contacted me before.)
So, how have I avoided these issues you may ask? By taking the Barney Fife method of "Nipping it in the bud!"
First, I have in my syllabus, that no make-up work, late work, will be accepted. It is due when it is due. The lowest Assignment and Exam for the semester is dropped, in case an emergency may arise that kept you from completing the assignment or taking the exam. Missing several assignments and exams will be considered not attending the course and lead to being Administratively Withdrawn. I do not accept excuses regardless of the reason including sickness, hospitalizations, loss of Internet, loss of electricity, car did not start or flat tire, called into work, emergencies to the ER, incarceration, and funerals. WOW funerals? How heartless? How did I become this way? Well, my 25 years of experience, the majority of the students do not inform you of their emergency till after the due date (sometimes up to a week) or less than an hour before it is due. Asking for proof can take weeks to receive and only a few will produce it. I try to impress on them in the real world after you graduate and if you are earning a good salary, you would not dare to miss an important assignment or a day from work, and if an emergency arises you would immediately contact your first line supervisor to let them know or possibly lose your position.
So yes I am a hard ass, and when these situations arise during the semester I send the typical empathetic AI email that includes all students are treated the same, where they can seek guidance or assistance. If they send back another ranting email I ignore it, although I do want to respond in a sterner tone. It is best leave sleeping dogs lie.
Before the last week of the semester I post on the Announcement page of the class and send an email
"It is hard to believe we are at the end of the semester. Next week will be our last. Just a reminder, there is no rounding up as your grade is based on points (870) and the three lowest quiz grades, lowest exam grade and two assignments are dropped. If you fell a little short from the next highest grade ask yourself "Did I attend class every day and take all the quizzes?" "Did I turn in according to directions for the Twelve Assignments (200-word minimum, used both sources, similarity report under 25%, and responded to two students)?" "Did I turn my Assignment in early to receive critique?" "Did I prepare myself for the final exam by making flashcards as suggested by the professor and studying days in advance until I mastered all the questions? Did I ever meet with the professor during Office Hours or go to the Writing Center or Academic Support Center if I needed help? Please do not email and ask me to reconsider. The previous paragraph is what I would use if I did."
Since I never accepted late work or do overs. I do believe is the reason why I have not received an email (face-to-face or online) from a student in three years after the grades have been posted. Do I like being this way no, but it does make it easier. And the only students I have found that do not like me are the ones that I have not done the work and I say NO! to their request

2024.05.11 19:44 Able_Decision_8449 I’m paying an arm and a leg for nursing school and they can’t even get the basics correct and there is little transparency when it comes to exam scores.

I started nursing school in January. My experience has been good until I started fundamentals. The nursing school I attend is expensive due to it being a private institution so that’s a given. But the lack of laziness from the school is insane. My issue is there are so many errors within the quizzes they give us, the videos they show us, and even the PowerPoints and lecture material. And the response from the instructors is either “I’ve been complaining for months for them to fix this on this quiz” or “Oh disregard this part of the video, it’s incorrect.” And I’m like so no one in academics thought to take out the time to fix these errors and recreate a video with proper information??? My concern is, if you can’t create SIMPLE quizzes with correct information and answers, how do I know these same errors do not happen with our Exams. Which there’s no way we can review what we got wrong. We just get a flimsy exam report telling us what percentage we scored in each area of the exam. Their excuse on why we can’t see what we got wrong is due to cheating from previous quarters. Change the exam questions then? They have a meeting held before we get our grades to discuss the Exam and see if any questions needs to be thrown out. I’m so annoyed with this program. Has anyone else experienced this? Have you spoken to anyone about the lack of trying to fix these errors?

2024.05.11 18:55 CallMeWolfYouTuber I've written a documented essay on circumcision for college. "Infant Male Circumcision: An Ethical Dilemma"

Infant Male Circumcision: An Ethical Dilemma
Male circumcision (AKA male genital mutilation) is a controversial topic with people debating the proposed medical benefits, social impact and perception, cultural expectations and norms, religious practices, and moral/ethical standards. Circumcision involves excising the foreskin of the penis. Four main topics of contention relating to male circumcision include cleanliness, tradition, aesthetic, and social acceptability (Murray and Allen). Personally, I think the debate boils down to the ethical concerns regarding the violation of bodily autonomy. An infant cannot consent to the permanent modification of their sexual organs. Just as female circumcision is wrong and a clear violation of human rights, so is the male equivalent. I am passionate about this topic because I do not believe it should be up to the parents to decide what happens to their son's penis and I detest any and all arguments suggesting religious or cultural justifications.
What is circumcision and what does the procedure entail? Circumcision, when performed on an infant male, requires the infant to be restrained "on his back on a board called a circumstraint, [preventing] the child from moving" (Solomon, 219). Then, the foreskin is separated from the glans which is "done by inserting a hemostat into the non-retracted foreskin, and then turning this probe-like device around the circumference of the glans" (Solomon, 219). An "incision line" is made along the foreskin using a "scissor-like clamp" and the foreskin is cut and peeled away from the glans. "The procedure is painful, and due to the risk of infant overdose, many circumcisions in the United States are performed with either minimal or no anesthesia" (Solomon, 219). The result is a screaming, crying, and traumatized baby who had to experience having a section of their most sensitive body part forcefully surgically removed, typically without pain relief or control.
Many proponents of male infant circumcision proclaim that a circumcised penis is more hygienic. "If left unclean, the foreskin can develop infections from trapped bacteria and secretions," says a participant from a data analysis study regarding opinions on male circumcision (Murray and Allen). According to Thomas E. Wiswell, evidence shows that "infants who are not circumcised have a higher rate of UTIs during infancy, and that adults are more likely to have penile cancer and certain (but not all) sexually transmitted diseases later in life" (Solomon, 220). The issue with claims of improved hygiene lies with the notion that circumcision is the only way to maintain proper cleanliness and that without the procedure, infections are more likely to occur. This concern is disingenuous and oversimplified and suggests that parents are incapable of teaching their children how to properly care for their normal (and healthy) body parts without drastic measures such as genital mutilation. The idea of lopping off parts of the body in the name of cleanliness is laughably ignorant and fallacious. I personally think that the purported benefits of circumcision (reduced risk of penile cancer, HIV, HPV, STDs, and UTIs) are irrelevant when discussing the ethical complications of overriding a person's right to bodily autonomy (Solomon, 220). According to a booklet from The Duke University Health System, evidence shows that circumcision does reduce the risk for UTIs and penile cancer, however, "it also mentions that both of these conditions are rare and that proper hygiene 'likely prevents penile cancer as much as circumcision does,' and "it does not give a similar non-amputation prevention tip for UTIs" (Solomon, 224). Arguments in support of infant male circumcision with the reasoning of cleanliness are rooted in a fundamental misunderstanding of how hygiene works and rely merely on the convenience of a permanent and largely unnecessary cosmetic surgical procedure to fix a simple case of willful ignorance and general laziness.
Tradition and religion are very important to many people and help them feel connected to their ancestors, loved ones, and communities, but should not ever be used as an excuse to override bodily autonomy. A participant in the aforementioned analytical study, mentioned that, "most parents decide to circumcise their baby boys merely because their religious faith dictates it, because the father was circumcised, or because it's a traditional practice common to a majority of males in this country" (Murray and Allen). This mindset is particularly common for people of the Jewish faith, where the procedure is considered a rite of passage and has been performed on boys for generations. According to the study, "other participants shared they support the freedom of individuals to make decisions based on their own beliefs and that they respect differing religious perspectives on circumcision" (Murray and Allen). The major point missed by the participants in said study is that the "freedom of individuals" to make religious-based decisions unabashedly overrides the individual freedom of the infant males who have no say in what happens to their bodies. I support religious freedom up until the point it affects people other than the individual making the choice. A big part of freedom of religion is freedom from religion- that is, the right to be protected from other peoples' beliefs and not have them dictate your own life. There's a huge difference between raising your children in a particular faith and mutilating their bodies because your holy book demands it. Genitals are such a private and intimate thing and I can hardly think of anything more violating than someone else choosing to alter my genitals when I am at my most vulnerable state because of their own selfish commitment to tradition or faith.
When it comes down to popular opinion, studies show that "the pervasive concern with social acceptability" is a major factor for whether or not parents decide to circumcise their sons during infancy, despite knowing the valid medical concerns in regards to the purpose and safety of the procedure (Murray and Allen). According to the analytical study already referenced, "social factors may be equally or more important than medical factors for parents during the decision-making process" (Murray and Allen). That leaves us with an important question that must be asked: what kind of parent makes permanent medical decisions regarding their child's health and body based significantly on the expectations and perspective of society? If American society said that females were more attractive without their labia and clitoris, would medical professionals be allowed to perform routine female circumcision (read: genital mutilation) simply because it were socially acceptable and even expected? Or should actual medical justifications be the only reason any sort of surgery on minors should ever be performed? Many- if not most- proponents of infant male circumcision make the choice for personal reasons and without properly understanding the risks and consequences of the choice they're making on behalf of their vulnerable and helpless baby boys. "Despite [the] lack of discussion or formal education on the topic, most of the emerging adults did express strong opinions in favor of circumcision based on their personal experiences and social interactions" (Murray and Allen). Parents who circumcise their sons are doing so with more respect to appearances than their own son's physical and mental wellbeing. The fear of society's disapproval and fear of rejection and bullying from peers is not a sufficient reason to permanently alter a child's body without their consent. Elective cosmetic procedures such as lip-filler, botox, breast augmentation, and rhinoplasty (nose jobs) are not rationalized and performed on non-consenting children, so why is circumcision any different? The answer is because of cultural and social acceptability.
It is also important to understand where the practice of circumcision came from and why it has become so popular. "Infant circumcision was recognized in the United States around 1900" (Ahmed and Ellsworth). The theory connecting germs and disease resulted in a widespread "germ phobia" and an increasing concern and "[suspicion] of dirt and bodily secretions" (Ahmed and Ellsworth). "The penis was deemed 'dirty' by association with its function, and as a result, circumcision was seen as preventative medicine to be practiced universally" (Ahmed and Ellsworth). Historically, "circumcision was also viewed as a method of treating and preventing masturbation" (Ahmed and Ellsworth). This is why context matters: circumcision derives not only from religious/cultural tradition, but also excessive paranoia surrounding germs and cleanliness and a desire to control another's sexuality. Even historically, the practice focuses on violating bodily autonomy and taking away a person's right to choose.
When considering a potential medical procedure (especially one that permanently alters the body), it is absolutely vital to fully understand the risks and benefits of said procedure before making the choice to go through with it. There is a pervasive problem with parents nonchalantly deciding to let doctors cut off their son's foreskin for superficial, self-serving, and unethical reasons and without proper regard for the genuine risks and potential complications. It's important to face the reality that routine infant male circumcision is an elective cosmetic procedure that is unnecessary the majority of the time and that the few purported benefits can equally be achieved through safer, less permanent and less invasive means. "The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has noted benefits of circumcision but has not suggested requiring the procedure" (Murray and Allen). Many arguments against circumcision are routinely "brushed off using a number of rationalizations" (Murray and Allen). There are many potential complications that can and have occurred to infants during this unnecessary surgery. Acute complications include "bleeding, hematoma, urethral laceration, incomplete circumcision (removal of too little tissue), penile degloving (removal of too much tissue), infection/sepsis, and injury to glans and frenulum," while late complications include, "penile skin bridge, preputial adhesions, poor cosmesis, meatal stenosis, buried/concealed penis, trapped penis, and urethrocutaneous fistula" (Ahmed and Ellsworth). Additionally, "circumcision, like any surgery, carries the risk of death" (Solomon, 230). Is even a very small risk of death or permanent disfigurement to a previously healthy baby boy worth a "clean-looking" penis or adherence to religious dogma? I don't think so. Physical damage, dismemberment, and death aren't the only risks involved with infant male circumcision. Opponents of the practice also mention "loss of penile shaft mobility, the loss of the protective covering of the foreskin, and decreased sexual sensitivity" (Solomon). Overall, the suggested "health benefits are fairly minor and routinely overstated" (Solomon). With these things in mind, the only right choice to make is to respect your child's right to choose for himself when he is old enough. Instead of risking his life and comfort for what is essentially a cultural and social ritual, teach him how to properly care for his body- don't mutilate it.
In conclusion, the numerous risks involved with routine infant male circumcision make the surgery not only unnecessary, but logically unsound and irresponsible in cases where there is no legitimate medical justification. If a parent is willing to risk such serious consequences for their infant child in the name of convenience, tradition, faith, or fear of social perception, it begs the question whether or not they are competent to make such permanent life-altering decisions for their innocent and vulnerable child. At the end of the day, any alleged benefits procured from the removal of the foreskin in non-consenting minors is overrode by the obvious unethical violation of bodily autonomy and the many serious (while uncommon) risks and complications that can occur during the unnecessary cosmetic procedure. The excuses of "hygiene, tradition, religious belief," and/or "aesthetics" and "social acceptability" are entirely moot in the face of ethical considerations and the crucial and imperative importance of the right to choose what happens to our own bodies.

2024.05.11 04:58 Do_Not_Call_Me_Mom My husband went full Heisenberg, and 32 years of marriage has ended in devastation

TLDR; my husband was cooking drugs in his lab at work and also carried on a five year affair with a girl 35 years his junior (starting when she was 18)
I’ve hidden it from our entire family for years so as not to upset or worry anyone, but my husband (let’s call him Joe, 56M, to whom I’ve been married for 32 years) has been struggling with increasingly worsening mental health for the past several years. Summer of 2022 he was an absolute mess, bursting into tears a propos of nothing, and saying very strange, dark things followed by a manic laugh that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. That summer I got a phone call from a police officer because he had stopped Joe for a minor traffic infraction and apparently Joe went on a rant about how the police and the government are against him. The police officer called me because I was listed as his emergency contact, and recommended I take him into the hospital for a 72 hour psychiatric hold. When Joe came home not long later he was outwardly calm. I asked about the police officer, and he said that the officer was exaggerating. So I didn’t take him into the hospital.
In Yellowstone on vacation that summer his off-the-rails manic and depressed behaviour became very concerning and difficult to handle, and his blood pressure was incredibly high. I was so alarmed I took him into the ER in Bozeman, MT. He was evaluated by a psych physician who told him that he needed to come off the anti-depressant he was on because he was manic and bipolar; anti-depressants when prescribed to people with bipolar disorder (BD) make the mania much, much worse. For several years by that point Joe had sporadically been seeing doctors for his worsening mental health and one of them had diagnosed him with borderline personality disorder. Unfortunately, Joe has had long problems with medication non-compliance, and various doctors and therapists have cut him loose because he was not compliant with treatment.
We rushed home from Yellowstone summer 2022, and got him in to see a psych doctor who confirmed the diagnosis of bipolar disorder. She prescribed Joe a mood stabilizer. He said he didn’t like how it made him feel, so he stopped taking it. She prescribed him a different mood stabilizer, and he did the same thing. He vehemently rejected the diagnosis of bipolar disorder and would only admit to depression, and would only accept being treated with the lowest dose of an anti-depressant called Prozac, even though anti-depressants are one of the worst drugs someone with bipolar disorder should take.
Fast forward to summer 2023, and Joe’s mental health continued to worsen. I had to make a choice to take a work position in Austria, or stay in our home town and try to deal with Joe. However, he was still rejecting the doctors’ diagnoses, and me being in our home town clearly hadn’t been halting his downward slide so far, so I decided to go to Austria. Joe and I had video calls every day and he seemed more or less fine on the calls, but he would text me in the middle of the night his time, so it was clear he was not sleeping. Joe is extremely good at keeping himself together long enough to seem fairly normal to people, and that has unfortunately been to his detriment.
When I got back from Austria in March, Joe was clearly even worse than he was before. There was now a paranoid aspect to him that hadn’t been there before, and he would say mean things to me, followed by that horrible manic laugh. He’s never been mean like that before in our entire 32 years of marriage. Then two hours later it was like nothing had happened. He couldn’t sit still, was talking a mile a minute, and was saying strange things and was easily confused. He had started cutting again, and told me that he blamed me for it (Joe has a long history of self-harm going back to when he was a teenager. Then, and now, he cuts himself on his arm as a form of releasing emotion. I only found out about his cutting in 2022 when I noticed fresh scars on his arm).
Then just over a month ago came the night of April 2nd. Joe has a computer tablet that he keeps by the bed and he reads or watches videos with it every night. Every night soon after he would pretty much immediately fall asleep, but then would wake up a few hours later and be up for the rest of the night. That night he fell asleep as usual, but his tablet kept going off with notification sounds and it was bothering me. I tried to wake him up to get him to put it on silent mode, but he was un-rousable. His eyes were rolled into the back of his head and he just mumbled incoherently.
The following morning Joe left for work early at the university where he works as he always did (he’d been working, and apparently working at a high enough level that his mental health had not attracted any attention). And then his tablet started going off again. I work from home, and annoyed, I opened it up to see if I could figure out how to turn the sound off so that I could get some work done in peace.
The tablet turned on when I opened the cover.
And what I found on that tablet has turned our world upside down and devastated our family.
The tablet opened to a technical document that described the chemical process to manufacture MDMA (which is a street drug that is also called ecstasy). Thoroughly alarmed, I did what I have never done in 32 years of being married, because up until now I’ve always trusted my husband… I went through Joe’s internet search history. And I discovered that he had been ordering chemicals and lab glassware, and even more alarmingly, had been shopping online for stun guns and pepper spray.
I immediately called his GP’s office to get advice on what to do. He had seen his GP three times in the prior two weeks because of his extremely high blood pressure and I had gone in with him to see if they could help with his mental health problems because he was so manic. But he denied to his GP that he had ever been diagnosed with bipolar disorder (his psych physician is not in the same health network as his GP, so his GP had none of Joe’s psych records). When I called his GP’s office on the morning of the 3rd in a panic to try to find out what to do given my discoveries on the tablet, the nurse told me that I immediately needed to get him to the ER for a psych assessment, and that if he didn’t go willingly the police would have to get involved. Joe came home a short time later and I told him what I had found on his tablet. He admitted that he was working on manufacturing MDMA in his lab at the university, and when I asked why he matter-of-factly pointed out that he has tools like a gas chromatograph and a mass spectrometer in his lab at the uni so that he could ensure purity. I told him that he needed to pack three days of clothes and come with me to the hospital or that the police would have to get involved. He begrudgingly came with me.
In the ER he admitted to being suicidal for at least two years and that he had apparently made an attempt the year before. He also admitted to his history of self-harm. He would not admit to being extremely manic and bipolar despite the doctor pointing out he was in fact very manic. After many hours in the ER he was admitted to the hospital, and he was in there over a week until April 11th.
While Joe was in the hospital, boxes were arriving in the mail to our house with chemicals, lab glassware, and a box full of many cans of pepper spray. The materials were disposed of.
But then things got even worse. I decided to go through his tablet more thoroughly, and discovered he had been inhabiting quite dark corners of the internet. And then, much worse, I discovered texts between him and a very young woman who is 35 years younger than he is. She is our daughters’ age. Like him, she has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder. And like him, she doesn’t think there is anything wrong with her. They both re-affirmed to each other that there is nothing wrong with them and that the rest of the world just doesn’t understand what it is like to be special like they are. They apparently have been carrying on a very active online and texting relationship since 2019 and profess love for each other. She lives in Italy, and Joe had booked at trip to go to Italy next month that he told me was for a conference, but when I confronted him with the texts he admits that he was going there to see her. Joe told me that she understands him like no one else does, and that she (in his words), is “like heroin” to him. For that reason, I refer to as “that heroin chick”, which is about the least offensive phrase I can come up with to refer to her. She was 18 when their relationship started (he was 52).
Going through the filing cabinet where Joe normally keeps all our bills and his various papers, I discovered our financials were in a horrific mess. And our taxes were due. When he’s well, Joe’s record keeping is impeccable, but what I found was just a nightmarish mess of jumbled papers. I also discovered hundreds and hundreds of pills. Apparently throughout the history of time Joe has never been medication compliant. He just hoards the pills.
And then I discovered in our crawlspace a bizarre setup with a rack with about $1000 worth of electronics that were turned on and blinking away, a big CO2 cannister and lots and lots of tubing. When I asked him about it, Joe said he set it up because he was growing mushrooms down there. I don’t want to ask what kind.
And then Joe confessed that back in 2022 he, in his words, got into “gunsmithing” using the university machine shop. Panicked, I asked him “Joe, are there firearms in our house?”, and he said “No, but anyways I never bought any ammunition”. The “but” tells me that somewhere in our house there is, or was, at least one firearm. And there may or may not be ammo.
And then I discovered that I had been locked out of our main bank account that his pay goes into and from which most of our bills are paid, so I had no idea how much was in that account, and all the statements for it were missing from Joe’s filing cabinet. Joe denies that he got me locked me out, but the account was joint when it was set up, and now suddenly I don’t have access anymore so that I can check the balance, and all the past statements were missing. His credit card statements were also conspicuously missing. My pay is just a fraction of what Joe makes, and if he was lavishly spending money unbeknownst to me, we were going to be in deep financial trouble.
In a panic to protect our liquid assets as much as I could, I transferred 90% of the money from our local joint account to an account under my name only, and then wrote myself a cheque from the other account I had been locked out of, and crossed my fingers it wouldn’t bounce (the cheques at least have both our names on them still). Luckily the cheque did not bounce. I wanted to move enough money that we could keep going for a few months no matter what else happened.
Meanwhile, in the hospital for the first five days Joe refused to take any medication other than the lowest dose of Prozac. Finally, he begrudgingly agreed to start a mood stabilizeanti-psychotic drug called Latuda, but made it clear he was only doing it under duress. Unfortunately, while he was in there, he would not allow the hospital to release any information to me. Given the paranoid statements he had been making to me before and the stun guns and pepper spray, I was worried for my own safety. Joe has never been violent to me at all, but he has definitely been paranoid recently and I was definitely the main target of his paranoia, and he has given no good explanation for the stun guns and pepper spray (and then there is the uncertainty about whether or not he’s squirreled away homemade firearms in the house). I had to tell him that I wasn’t going to pick him up if he wasn’t going to let his doctors tell me what his mental state was, and that I didn’t feel safe with him in the house and he was going to have to find someplace else to go until we got things sorted out. He stayed in a hotel for the first week but came over during the day and helped with various house projects. By April 19th it was clear from his behaviour that the Latuda had made him quite a bit less paranoid, so I invited him to live back in the house and he’s our daughter’s old room now. While the Latuda helped with his paranoia and suicidality, it doesn’t treat mania, and Joe was still extremely manic when he left the hospital.
Unfortunately, even though he was still very manic, the hospital released him with no aftercare plan, and it is clear that he is going to need extensive out-patient care for many weeks. While he was in the hospital I told the university he was going to be on extended leave, and he has been granted an initial six weeks, but it is easy to extend; at his faculty rank he has a huge amount of paid sick leave. At first Joe insisted he was going right back to work when he got out of the hospital, but because he was still extremely manic I was very much against that, especially since I know for a fact that he has drug manufacturing material set up in his lab because I could see in his internet search history he had bought other glassware and chemicals prior to me discovering his activities, and those materials were not in our house. I was worried he wanted to continue where he left off.
In the first days after his release from the hospital, I scrambled to get him the intensive treatment he needs. He did have one appointment with his therapist he had been seeing last year (but then stopped when I went to Vienna). He invited me to the appointment. And then proceeded to lie to the therapist right in front of me, telling her that “My wife found on my tablet that I had been reading about MDMA, and she may see things differently, but that was it”.
He knows that there were chemicals and labware delivered to our house while he was in the hospital, and he knows I have pictures of all that, and also screenshots of everything on his tablet. He knows that I had to consult with a criminal defense attorney. And then there was heroin chick, stun guns and pepper spray, locking me out of the shared account, and the gunsmithing.
Joe also had an appointment with his old psych doctor the first week he was out and I went with him so that I could fill her in on his behaviour (unfortunately, all the times in the past seeing her by himself, Joe has been in denial of being bipolar and he is extremely good at masking his behaviours when needed). I described the drug manufacturing, the paranoia, the stun guns and pepper spray, heroin chick… everything. She had a stern talk with him and told him that unfortunately he is very intelligent and instead of using that intelligence to get healthy, he had been using it to mask all of his activities. She took him off the Prozac and added lithium to his Latuda to treat his mania.
She is absolutely correct. Joe is unfortunately far too intelligent for his own good.
He is in denial that he’d done anything wrong or that he’s seriously ill. To him, everything he did seemed perfectly normal and logical (from his manic logical point of view, why wouldn’t you manufacture drugs in your lab, because you have the tools to ensure they are pure). Joe unfortunately is in the 50% of people with bipolar disorder who are completely unaware of their manic behaviour, even when they are completely off the rails. They are addicted to the manic high, and thus are extraordinarily difficult to convince to be medication compliant.
Anyway, just when you think things can't get even worse they do; last week I discovered that Joe had a secret social media account on Tumblr, and on it he had posted a picture of a girl passed out with a needle in her arm and a heroin cooking spoon and a second needle in the foreground. He had superimposed several hearts above her head. The girl looked a lot like his young girlfriend in Italy. I checked the date on the post, and it was last May. It occurred to me he was on a trip, ostensibly for work, in Europe last May. When he got home that day, I confronted him with the evidence that he had used federal grant money to fund what was ostensibly a work trip but was really a trip to see he his girlfriend in Italy. He confirmed it. The look on his face when he confirmed it broke me; a mixture of smugness, along with annoyance that I was even bringing it up.
I also told him I knew they did heroin together. He denied that part, but I don't believe him.
He then confessed that in the trip he was planning this month to see her, he was going to bring her some MDMA that he had manufactured. Because apparently Italy is fresh out of ecstasy.
The next day I went into the doctor and got tested for HIV, hepatitis, and every STD known to mankind. Joe expressed anger that I was casting aspersions upon the character of his girlfriend by assuming that she was a junkie and might have STD’s; “You don’t know her"
Something fundamental broke inside me as I lay on that table at the doctor’s office and they did what needed to be done to get their samples for testing. I felt like I had been raped. It was then and there that I knew that as much as I had loved the man my husband used to be, I couldn’t continue in the relationship.
We’re currently working on a legal separation agreement, and so far it is amicable. He will buy me out of my half of the house. I am working on collecting my things to move across the country to the same area our daughters live. It is such a sad process because I don’t want to leave anything I don’t want heroin chick to touch or even look at, so I am taking all the pix of our kids and various mementos. Meanwhile, Joe seems impatient that I should just get out of the house already. He clearly wants me gone ASAP so he can go off his meds and have his girlfriend shack up with him. The entire family gives it less than five years before he is dead or incarcerated. And less than six months before heroin chick is living in our house.
I’m reeling from all that has happened and I’m still in shock. It will take years to come to some kind of acceptance of what has happened. And financially speaking both of our retirements have been torpedoed. When he's well, Joe is a wonderful husband and father. When he's not well he's a completely shit human being, and is utterly unapologetic for anything he does.
Anyway… that is the story of how my mentally ill husband of 32 years went full Heisenberg and had an affair with a teenager, and now we’re separating and likely will ultimately end up divorced.

2024.05.11 01:44 WonderfulTable6751 Rant/open to positive feedback/tips

Hi all,
Just for context I’m a 28 year old female struggling with mental health and just recently I came to realize that I’ve been struggling with mental health for a looong time, well into my early childhood, but just didn’t know it. Recently I’ve found myself scrolling through tik tok ADHD videos and yes I know I cannot self diagnose through tik tok videos so I started doing more in depth research. I decided to take a quiz through Mental Health America and based off my score it suggested Im experiencing signs of ADHD.
I’ve always felt like something was fundamentally wrong with me. I have a hard time with emotional regulation, sensitive to rejection, overwhelming feelings when thinking about the aspects of my life that need improvement, constant overstimulation. I strongly relate to the inatentive aspect of ADHD and I’m starting to piece things together about my life that didn’t always make sense.
I feel like I have no hope right now, mix my depression/anxiety with my ADHD and I feel… terrified. What’s next? Will it ever get better? I’m afraid to be on medication because of the side effects. I’m afraid that my ADHD has made me a bad mom...
I’m trying to make slow changes to improve myself and though I’m struggling with my depression I try so hard to keep it together but it feels so hard to do be consistent with the basics, has anyone else experienced that with ADHD?
If anyone can just provide some encouraging words or suggestions about how to advocate for myself when being diagnosed or what to do I would appreciate it.
