Best way to heat a small above ground pool, in the UK?
2024.05.14 19:55 jamesrosshill Best way to heat a small above ground pool, in the UK?
Not sure I’m in the right place, as it looks like most things in this sub are about big below ground pools. LMK if this should be somewhere else.
Got a 10 foot Intex easyset pool, and just upgraded to a good sand filter as those little filter cartridge ones just don’t clear the water and have to be cleaned daily. The flow rate is now too high for the old little 2kw heater (and the cost of it is like £20 a day in electricity).
I’ve seen you can get small heat pump heaters but they’re like £500 - £800, are they worth it or is there a better way?
It rarely gets above 15c here, and the kids just won’t go in a cold pool :/
There isn’t enough sun to heat that way either.
Thanks!

2024.05.14 19:22 keycoinandcandle Each remaster of the extended trilogy has been a disaster.
I was fortunate enough to have been able to see all three films in the theaters on their respective premiere dates. I remember the visual experience was unlike any other that I had ever seen. They were perfect, pure, and beauty incarnate. This was the case even before we had access to HD versions of the films. When the extended editions came out on DVD, I watched them over and over again, reliving the experience as often as I could manage it. But then there was a long period of several years where I simply didn’t have time to watch them due to having started college.
Then one day, after the blu ray format had already made an impact in the home video industry for several years, I finally got around to jumping on the blu ray bandwagon, got myself a very small HD tv, and got myself the Lord of the Rings extended editions of the films in the updated format. Although the magic and wonder was still there, it was the first time I had noted that the films had started to show their age just a bit more than I had realized; the most glaring feature being that everything had a sort of surreal green tint, up to and including all of the characters, which I assumed was the result of the light of the green screen reflecting off of the actors faces.
I didn’t learn until literally just the other week that the green tint wasn’t the way the films had originally looked. It was a glitch in the restoration process for the blu ray releases that resulted in a green tint throughout all three films. Ironically, this glitch is NOT present in the blu ray theatrical cuts of the films. In fact, despite the lack of the extended scenes, the theatrical blu ray remaster is, on a technical level, far visually superior to the extended.
If you see the scenes that the theatrical versions have in common, you can actually see a lot of the what green tint, and other color balance issues of the extended versions, has done to the integrity of the film; some scenes are washed out, some scenes are missing crisper detail, and you lose a lot of the fine details in some of the special effects.
The green tint was never corrected in subsequent HD releases; confusing considering most extended prints of blu raybfilms tend to have better remastering and editing corrections.
The problem is, now that I know it's there, I can't unsee it ever again.
When it was announced that not only was the Lord of the Rings extended editions going to be remastered in 4K, but that Peter Jackson himself was overseeing the project, Tolkien fans and cinephiles alike went absolutely nuts with excitement.
But then the 4K remaster was released, and right off the bat, the use of DNR was glaringly obvious. Everyone looked like they were posing for selfies on Instagram. There was even a scene where Gandalf’s staff kept disappearing because the DNR mistook it for digital noise. It also appeared to be an upscale of the blu ray rather than a fresh scan of the original film print. And being that it was an upscale of the blu ray extended edition, the restoration started with the green tint, then was color corrected to appear more like the correct colors of the theatrical cut. However, because it was not an exact color match, but an approximation, this resulted in some scenes being so bright and washed out that significant amounts of detail were lost. On top of this, an additional effect filter was used to make the visuals more consistent with the Hobbit trilogy; the newer, but less beloved prequel trilogy panned by critics and Tolkien fans alike. But lastly, and most insultingly, there are several scenes in which several of the little actors doubling for the Hobbit characters in wide shots, were digitally replaced with renderings of the main actors. In other words, Peter Jackson did a Star Wars to his films.
Unless Peter Jackson allows for someone else to release another edition with a new remaster, or does another one himself, but better this time around, the hope that the public will see a perfectly preserved version of the extended Lord of the Rings trilogy is utterly lost. That’s an absolute tragedy.
Though making new films is important, the primary benefit of 4K technology is its ability to preserve the fidelity of older films. It’s not just the preservation of art, but the preservation of culture. What Peter Jackson has done, if he doesn’t reverse it, is cultural vandalism. It's just like George Lucas; what he has done to his original trilogy is cultural vandalism. What every DNR-happy studio is doing to otherwise wonderful films, is cultural vandalism.
The fruit of knowledge is bitter indeed.

2024.05.14 17:57 PuddingConscious Can I get a second opinion on this quote, and whether the reverse osmosis system is necessary?
Hey all. I have a private well. I had a company come test it today and recommend me a system.
They said the system would require a cartridge filter, water softener (which would also remove minerals and metals), and UV system.
In addition, they strongly recommended a reverse osmosis system for roughly $2,000. Can someone tell me how necessary that is?

2024.05.14 15:34 multi-chain Filtering Out the Noise: The Art of Purifying Polymersomes
Filtering Out the Noise: The Art of Purifying Polymersomes.
In the world of
nanotechnology, precision is key. When working with tiny particles like polymersomes, even the slightest impurity can throw off the entire experiment. That’s why purification is a crucial step in the process of creating these complex
nanostructures. In this essay, we’ll delve into the fascinating world of filtration, exploring how scientists use a specialized system to separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.
Imagine you’re faced with a bowl of soup filled with vegetables of all sizes. Your task is to separate the large chunks from the smaller bits. This is essentially what the scientists are doing with their
polymersomes, but on a much smaller scale. The challenge is to design a system that can accurately sort these tiny particles, removing impurities and unwanted molecules to produce a pure and uniform population of
polymersomes.
The solution lies in a specialized filtration system called the
KrosFlo Research IIi System. This high-tech sieve is designed specifically for tiny
particles, using a hollow fiber filter module as its heart. The module is a cartridge filled with tiny hollow fibers, which can be thought of as miniature straws with
porous walls. These fibers are the key to the filtration process, allowing smaller particles to pass through while retaining larger ones.
The process begins with a concentrated solution of polymersomes, which are the “
vegetables” the scientists want to sort. To facilitate the filtration process, the solution is diluted with PBS (
phosphate-buffered saline), a solution that mimics the body’s natural environment. The diluted solution is then fed into the KrosFlo system, where it flows through the hollow fibers.
Here’s where the magic happens. Smaller
polymersomes and unwanted molecules pass through the pores in the fiber walls, while larger polymersomes are too big to fit through and are retained within the filter module. The retained volume, containing the larger polymersomes, is then collected, re-diluted, and passed through the filter again. This repeated process helps to further purify the sample, removing any remaining impurities.
But the process isn’t complete yet. To concentrate the purified polymersomes, the researchers switch to a filter module with smaller pores (10 kDa). This allows water and smaller molecules to pass through, while retaining the polymersomes, effectively concentrating the solution.
So why go through all this trouble? The goal is to isolate a pure and uniform population of polymersomes. By removing smaller particles and unwanted molecules, the researchers ensure that their final sample contains only the desired, larger
polymersomes. This is crucial for
downstream experiments and applications where consistency and purity are essential.
In the end, the art of purification is a testament to human ingenuity and the power of science. By designing a system that can accurately sort and purify tiny particles, scientists can unlock the full potential of polymersomes, paving the way for breakthroughs in fields like medicine and biotechnology.

2024.05.14 05:09 No-Cancel-7418 Using Fluval clearmax instructions??
| So I recently checked both of my 10 gallon tanks water parameters and everything came out fine except ‘High Nitrate and Nitrite’ I do know that I have my tanks overstocked so I try and do weekly water changes. These fluval clearmax filter bags (100g) “each” can treat up to 80 US gallons of tank water. My question is if it would be safe to use one bag per tank and not cause some sort of spike in my parameters since each bag treats 80 US gallons of water?! Also, where would these filter bags go inside of my tank because remember it’s 2 10 gallon tanks with small filter cartridges. Please help me! Any help would be greatly appreciated! submitted by No-Cancel-7418 to aquarium [link] [comments] |
2024.05.14 04:19 Speed_Offer I need some filter help!
For context I have a 6g tank that has no live creatures in it. I'm trying to find some plants and such to make it a glorious lush garden of shrimp and maybe a betta down the line. Anyway my issue is finding cartridges for my current filter. I have a marina s10 slim and a pack of maybe 5 was 16.99 and this thing requires 2 cartridges at once. It doesn't last me very long. Plus it has a weird disk thing to keep it level which makes me uncomfortable because it can literally pop out at any time and spill water everywhere.
I ran out of the s10 cartages and put in one of my aqueon cartridges in it, it is now cloudy for some reason? Like it's throwing the fuzz stuff from the cartage? So. I need some help on what to do. I've had a sponge filter previously and didn't really care for it as it didn't seem to filter out the floating stuff as well as a HOB does. Also the air pump was annoying as hell with the obnoxious hum, not to mention the amount of floor space it took up. I also have a plastic piece on the glass lid that's already altered for the s10.
If anyone has any tips that would be awesome because I really don't know what to do with it lol

2024.05.14 02:25 SilentThree What causes objects in photos to look WAY more dusty than they look to the naked eye?
Today I had to request a replacement for a defective 4K Blu-ray disc. Part of the request process is taking a picture of the disc, which came out looking like this:
https://i.imgur.com/iTEzhPd.png To my naked eye, the disc doesn't look
anything close to this dusty, but the picture looks horrible. I'd expect the people processing the return to say, "Well, of course it wouldn't play! Clean all of that dust off!"
This was my second attempt at a picture. After a first attempt, and I saw how dusty the image looked, I tried wiping the disc down with a tissue (I didn't have a more ideal type of wipe handy) which should have at least helped, even if the tissue wasn't totally lint-free.
I've experienced this sort of thing many times before when taking close-up pictures of common objects. I can tell that it's not dust on my camera lens, because it doesn't appear consistently in the same places from shot to shot, and only appears in close-up images.
I was using ambient room light, no flash. This is just an iPhone photo, no fancy camera equipment involved.
Is there a good way to avoid this problem? If I can't avoid the problem in the first place, is there a good digital filter for cleaning this up? I've tried "despeckle" filters in Photoshop and GIMP, but they never clean up enough until you crank them up to the point that too many other details, like lettering, are completely trashed. I ended up doing a lot of point-by-point clean-up with the rubber stamp tool.

2024.05.14 02:12 SeasonNo2239 8mm natural filters?
I have been looking for 8mm filters that are not made from plastic. I have found a few 6mm natural fibre filters, and I cannot understand why not in 8mm. Is 8mm for tobacco/cigarettes irregular?
I tried the 8mm RAW cotton filters, and experienced zero draw. I tried unpacking the densely packed filter, hastily got annoyed and regretfully threw the whole bag out thinking “how could they sell a product that does not work?”
I tried to get Arango organic filters, but the one site that carries them does not deliver outside the US, and the other site is a wholesaler. I am in Canada.
I tried to order from Mr Tipps for their bamboo corn filter. This product looks pretty cool. But there is a website error that prevents me from completing the order while checking out. And they are unresponsive to emails.
In the meantime I have been stuffing bits of cotton in pre rolled tips. But this is pretty tedious. Am I S.O.L.? I moved to RYO for a cleaner smoke. Tobacco, paper, filter. And there does not seem to be a market for filters made from a non plastic material. Cotton, paper, corn, etc.
I would genuinely like to understand why not? I am blue collar, and it seems like most smokers around me are only interested in the cheapest smoke they can get and don’t care what is in it or what it is made from or even how bad the smoke is. I would think smoking through a plastic filter would be undesirable.
I would move to just pre rolled paper tips, but I get tongue bite when smoking without filters, and loose tobacco falls out. Perhaps I could dry the tobacco a bit more, and try a slower draw more like cigar smoking. I don’t know.
Any suggestions? Thank you.

2024.05.13 21:27 CaptainInvictusAnim Filter Troubles
| I think it’s time to replace my filter. I’ve had an Aquaclear on this tank for a couple of years tops, and to be honest, I haven’t liked it. It started making this “grunting” noise a few months in, and that’s only gotten worse. There’s no way to clean the junction between the intake pipe and the flow adjuster. It also overflowed the housing and poured water down the wall, ruining the paint (which I’ll have to pay for when I move out, presumably). I’ll give it this— it does a great job of keeping the tank clean. But that’s about all it does… it’s so loud doing it, I have to take points off for that. I have a 26 gallon planted aquarium, with a smattering of freshwater fish, like tetras, dwarf catfish, and even a couple fish my friend donated to me when he got out of the hobby. I’m looking for recommendations for a replacement filter. I do not think a canister setup would fit with the space I have. I’m leaning towards a Seachem HOB, but would like input, please. I also prefer not-cartridge filters. TYIA! submitted by CaptainInvictusAnim to Aquariums [link] [comments] |
2024.05.13 20:52 Interesting-Fuel238 Why are cartridge filters better if they are harder to clean?
We just had a new pool installed last year. Everyone with the pool company said cartridge filters were much better than sand filters (they sell both so it wasn't like they were a Ford dealer telling me why chevy's are bad).
But now as I learn more about pools, I see people with sand filters that are so easy to clean, meanwhile it's 30 minutes of labor to clean my cartridge filter, getting water and debris splashed on me. We just opened the pool in December and I've already had to clean that thing 4 times and I bet I haven't even been in the pool 4 times. Is there not a way to make a cartridge filter that can be backwashed like sand? If not, why not always use a sand filter?

2024.05.13 18:27 BaggyBoy How do I search for a number within a list of cells?
I have a list of product names e.g.
HP CF239A Enterprise 700 M712 500 Sheet Feeder and Tray
Compatible Canon 067H High Capacity 4 Colour Toner Cartridge Multipack
Epson V13H134A39 EH-TW7000 Projector Air Filter
I also have a seperate list of the product MPN numbers e.g:
V13H134A39
CF239A
067H
How do I search or lookup for the MPNs to return the products titles? I cannot use Vlookup because the MPNS are within the titles and always in different places. I have a list of 20000 products and each has a slightly different naming convention meaning find and replace also hard.

2024.05.13 18:17 MyRail5 Silt coming back in?
I'm vacuuming the pool from winter gunk and the pool is clouding. Almost looks like the cartridge filters aren't catching enough of the fine stuff and it's being pumped back in. Cartridges were very clean and only 2 years old. Are there sock type things I could put around the pump basket to catch finer debris? I can only find skimmer basket filters online.

2024.05.13 15:51 coffeebikepop PSA for sustainable good water in Europe - Zerowater now recycles
| Hey gang, European coffee nerds know that there are no great solutions for using good water in Europe that don't involve a frustrating negative impact on the environment: - Reverse osmosis systems can be expensive and impractical in our small Euro apartments, and they waste a large quantity of water
- Good mineral water is easy to find (Volvic etc.) but involved not-great extraction practices, sizable transport-related emissions and plastic waste (except if you have a deposit system like in Germany, but I dare you to brew a cup with Gerolsteiner)
- Regular water filter carafes (eg. Brita) don't filter all minerals, and calcium is especially problematic if your tap water is particularly hard - you'll end up needing to descale regularly
- Foodsafe demineralized water is generally hard to find and would imply the same transport-related emissions as mineral water
I've been using Zerowater filter to bring my tap water's TDS to 0 PPM (or approaching) and remineralize (find out more about good custom water chemistry at https://espressoaf.com/guides/water.html - my default is Melbourne water, which requires only sodium bicarbonate and Epsom salt and is easy to dose). To me it's both the best option for great water, and the least-bad environmental choice... except until recently you couldn't recycle them in Europe. Well now you can! Buying directly from the ZW website lets you order free recycling bags for sending back spent cartridges for recycling. So that's my last hurdle to recommending ZW gone now. https://preview.redd.it/cw1u7wdt770d1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=f8afdbfc9795c6e6197382811eaf7dcce3242025 This is not a sponsored post - I'm just genuinely excited about good coffee becoming marginally less bad for the environment. 2024.05.13 15:45 Verrgasm Breston Boobilay: All Five Inches
Breston Boobilay
Breston Boobilay meandered his way along the sprawling New York sidewalk, stifling a stagger as he lurched forward. He was on a drunken mission like so many others he’d set out on before, and this mission, like all others, entailed the timely acquisition of cheap, night-time cooze. Air to the vast Boobilay Meat Pie fortune, Breston rarely had trouble sniffing out hole. But, out there, gripped in the chill of the brisk winter wind, he found himself with his balls as blue as his icy fingertips.
Breston rubbed his palms together and shuddered, watching the breath escape him in thick, swirling plumes. That’s when he noticed the flickering red neon through the gloom ahead, and he couldn’t help but smile as he felt himself instantly become warmer. He lit a cigarette in an effort to restore his sobriety, however briefly, as he thought about what potentially awaited him beyond the door he now found himself in front of. Pussy, and more booze, and maybe even a plug that wouldn’t turn out to be just another irritating, time wasting dipshit. Breston took one last satisfying drag from his smoke before tossing it in the slush on the curb as it sizzled and died. Then, he opened the door and went inside.
Breston Boobilay 2: Electric Boobilay
Breston came inside and a thick fog of lingering smoke whipped by his head out into the icy chill of the New York City winter he’d just left behind. The door slammed through the force of an incoming gust and Breston shivered as a conglomerate of weary eyes turned to meet his reddened, eager face. The patrons of the bar were hardly the fresh meat he’d been hoping to encounter in a shithole like that. The collective weathered faces, likely habitual fixtures of the place, turned back to their drinks and their dull, mumbled conversations as Breston made himself at home on a stool at the far end of the bar, ordering a J&B on the rocks. Breston reached into his coat pocket and retrieved a new cigarette, lighting it and inhaling deeply. The smoke escaped him, and as it dispersed across the room he noticed the only remotely fuckable woman there as she eyed him with intrigue from the other side of the bar. Breston clutched up his drink, drained it, and moved in for the kill.
“Got a light?” She asked, seductively, after he had closed the distance having brushed his way through the decaying bodies of the scant Tuesday night crowd.
“No,” Breston replied smoothly, “But I have an eight-point-five inch long penis.”
Her bleach-blond bangs ruffled in excitement, the way a cat’s fuzzy face might if you were to hold a fishy treat up to it. There was only one kind of pussy that Breston was interested in, and only one type of fishy treat.
“Is that right?” The pussy purred, her blue green-flecked eyes brightening. “You wouldn’t lie to a lady now, would you?”
Breston felt his four-point-eight inch long member stiffen in his jeans and he readjusted his posture to conceal it.
“How about that light?” Breston murmured sensually, offering up his burning tip for the lady’s smoke.
“My, my,” She said, the words passing her lips in slow rolls of erotic delight. Pouting them around the slender filter, she moved in closer to Breston, taking her sweet time before finally allowing the cigarette to burn. “what a gentleman…”
“How old are you, by the way?” Breston interjected flirtily, “Like thirty, or something?”
“I’m twenty-eight…”
“Good enough,” Breston didn’t usually bang out grandmas, but in a drought like the one plaguing him, he knew it best to seek out any port possible to wait out the storm of pussilessness until the opportunity for a half-decent fuck with a youthful lay presented itself like that sword in the stone, or whatever the fuck it was. The thought occurred to Breston as if a crotch lightbulb had lit up around his midsection: ‘Perhaps she has a younger, hotter roommate…’ “Your place or mine? I have to warn you, though, my shitter is all backed up.”
“I… guess… we could go back to my-” The pussy stammered.
“Great, Let’s go.” Breston interrupted, sexily.
“Aren’t you at least going to buy me a drink first?” The pussy pleaded, motioning towards the disinterested bartender presumably getting ready to close up.
“Sure, we can stop at a liquor store on the way and grab some forties. If we move fast, we can make it before they stop selling booze. Come on, hurry!” Said Breston, throwing up an arm in the direction of the door like some mad conductor in the throes of a beautiful symphonic din.
And so Breston and the cheap night-time cooze bounded out into the darkness from whence they’d came, moving swiftly, lest the hour evade them and Breston be forced to grunt atop the relatively sub-5 geriatric female in the midst of returning accursed sobriety. An outcome which, he knew, simply wasn’t an option.
Breston Boobilay 3: Curse of the Cooze
“We have you now, Mr. Boobilay!” Malphus Mephistopheles cackled menacingly, relishing in his imminent, long-awaited triumph over renegade superspy Breston Boobilay, who lay helpless, strapped to the long metallic table as the laser beam drew ever closer to his bulging crotch. “Tell me, how does it feel to know that you will never get pussy again? Bwahahahaha!”
Breston could feel the billion-degree heat running along his exposed thighs, threatening his tighty-whitey clad dick and balls with extinction. That’s when he remembered; the tabs of flunitrazepam contained in the secret toe compartments of his shiny black loafers, of which Malphus’s underlings had neglected to remove along with his tuxedo pants. Breston began to chuckle a cackled laugh of his own, drawing the ire of his bedraggled captor.
“You know what your problem is, Malphus?” Malphus moved in closer, slamming a pale, thin palm down on the table by Breston’s head. Breston didn’t even blink. “You never got pussy. That’s why you hate me so much.”
“That isn’t true!” Malphus shrieked, the remainders of his long scraggly hair standing on end. “I’ve got pussy, lots of times!”
“Oh, yeah?” Breston replied coolly, “Who from?”
“You wouldn’t know her. She goes to a different school…”
The laser beam was just a few inches away from destroying Breston entirely, the distinctive burning stench of singed pubes beginning to fill the small subterranean chamber. He knew that he had to act fast.
“You wanna know a secret, Malphus?” Breston half-whispered.
“What?” Malphus replied, leaning in.
“SURPRISE ROOFIE!” With a flick of his loafer, Breston discharged a fleet of small pills into Malphus’s’s shocked, wide open mouth. He began to gag as they became lodged in his throat. ‘Bullseye’, Breston thought to himself smugly as he smirked, reaching out his hand and snatching the insane scientist's keys from his belt beneath his stained lab coat. In a flash, Breston was free and on his feet. By the time he was straightening his tie, Malphus Mephistopheles was passed out on the cold, metal floor; drooling.
Breston laughed, dropping his underwear and proceeding to teabag the unconscious man. Breston’s laugh erupted into a cackle surpassing that of any villain he had previously encountered, loud enough to alert Malphus’es’s throng of penguin-like minions. They gasped in horror as they witnessed the violation of their master.
“Who’s next!” Breston roared, the weird little penguin freaks fucking off in abject defeat, screaming as they went.
“I’m unstoppable! Do you understand that! I’m a god! I’m Breston Boobilay! Look at my work, and tremble!”
All of a sudden, Breston felt that familiar dreaded feeling begin to rear up from inside him. It stabbed at him with doubts and the incessant pain and the anxiety that made his body tremor. In an instant, he felt the power drain from him, replaced by something else. Something terrible. He looked down at his quaking hands, and saw that they were dripping with blood.
Breston awoke with a scream, as did the cooze he’d shacked up with. She hissed at him, still very cat-like in her manner.
“What the fuck, dude! Are you okay?”
“Don’t worry about it,” Breston sighed, rubbing at the beading rows of sweat dangling from his manly brow. “Just another night terror…”
“Why is my bed all wet?..” The girl questioned hesitantly, “Is that… is that piss!”
“No!” Breston felt himself beneath the sheets, soaked to the bone. “No, it’s just sweat! See?”
Breston removed his hand from his soiled groin, lifting it up to her face so that she might smell that it was in fact only sweat. She screamed, penguinishly, as she fled from the room in hysterics. Breston stood and began to put his clothes back on, eyes never moving from the large dark stain covering the pink bedspread. It was a stain as dark as his soul, and Breston knew that he couldn’t hide from it deep in a pussy hole for very much longer…
Breston Boobilay 4: The Quest For Peace
Breston glared into the steam rising from his coffee cup, the sinuous curves of its alluring dance making his dick twitch minutely in subtle arousal. The hangover was debilitating, but he told himself that it would pass with the caffeine and the shower he longed for back at home. However, to his despair, Breston knew better. How many times had he been there before, like that? Not in that exact diner, in that exact situation, mouth dry as an old nun’s cooze and smelling faintly like urine, but simply infirm, haggard, and desperate for some kind of meaningful relief? Breston knew, in that uniquely lonely moment, that he’d never find it.
The waitress breasted boobily across the diner floor, carrying Breston’s pie aloft in the air towards him. He couldn’t help but take notice of the way that her uniform hugged her body as her bosom heaved heftily as she walked, and, yet, Breston’s manhood remained as limp and placid as a premature baby’s pinkie. She reminded him of her, when they first met. She set the plate down, wrinkling her nose in disgust as she smelled Breston’s undying shame.
“Will that be all, sir?” She said, already preparing to turn and leave him there, all alone. Just like she did.
Breston wanted to scream ‘No!’. He wanted to yell at her and spew out all the things that he should have said, before it was too late. Breston wanted to spring up from the booth and grab the woman by the knockers and say ‘Were they worth it! Does he love them better than I did!’, but, he didn’t. Instead, he said nothing. The waitress was already gone, along with Breston’s will to live. The coffee’s steam had diminished down to small, dwindling whisps. He scooped up the mug and finished its contents, focusing on the lukewarm liquid as it spilled down his throat as if it might quell the shaking in his hands. Breston knew that only one thing could do that. He glanced at the clock behind the counter. It was eleven-thirty AM. Time to hit the sauce, he thought, grimacing.
Breston Boobilay 5: A Long Way Down
The chilly afternoon stung at Breston as he brought the bottle back up to his lips for another sickening hit of brandy. The shakes had left him, but his despair had only grown. It had calcified, made clear in his mind in a way that was truly unignorable and utterly undeniable. Everything good that Breston had ever had; his wife, his upper management job at the Brooklyn meat plant, his youth. It had all gone away so quickly. Breston thought of his parents, and the beginnings of a tear began to form before being swept away across his temple by the incoming wind. He thought about the last thing his father had said to him before he had stormed out to go drinking the previous weekend: ‘Breston, you're forty-two-years old. It’s time you moved out of the house.’, and he remembered how angry he’d been; yelling and cussing him out as a ‘frigid dinosaur’ who refused to take the time to understand Breston’s ‘alternative lifestyle’, and he couldn’t help but laugh. Father could never understand.
Breston tipped the bottle over his mouth and gulped down the remains of the liquor as he savored every last, overpriced trickle before shambling over to the guardrail at the rooftop’s edge. He eyed the distance between the two buildings, then he took the drop into account. After a moment, he took a step back, raised the bottle over his head, and launched it. It arched high over the street below before clattering against a tall windowpane of the office block opposite the building he was on.
“Bullseye…” Breston said aloud, to no one.
Suddenly, he got a flash of the dream he’d had the night before when he blacked out in that cooze kitten’s piss pad, and the urge to run and jump doubled in intensity. Breston didn’t like to remember. He didn’t want to. But, even in his nightmares, Matty was still there. Matty was always there. He was their favorite. Always was. It was always, ‘Breston, why can’t you be more like your younger brother?’, ‘Why can’t you be more like Matty?’. Always so perfect, with his good grades and mommy’s constant approval. Breston hated him. Oh, how he hated Matty with every fiber of his being, and he made that clear when Matty reached highschool. Breston was supposed to look out for Matty, protect him. But Breston did anything but. Matty was shy, and insecure about himself, but, most of all, Matty was ashamed of the fact that he’d never had a girlfriend before. Breston would make a big show of bringing whatever hoe-bag he’d seduced with daddy’s money back home so that he could flaunt her around like some prize that Matty could never earn, which crushed him, but not nearly as much as when Breston began spreading the rumors around school about how his dick didn’t work. By the end of the week, Matty was little more than a laughing stock and an emotional, broken wreck, and by the end of the month, Matty was dead.
“It wasn’t my fault, you stupid fuck!” Breston screamed into the dispassionate, gray New York sky within which no God could ever dwell, flashes of his mother screeching, ‘You did this! You!’ tearing at him like sharpened, savage claws ripping their way ravenously through a model’s skimpy lingerie. “I could have helped you! I could have made it all okay again!”
Breston fell to his knees and began to sob like the sad little boy he’d always known he was, feeling more alone than he ever had been before in his entire life. He had made so many mistakes. So many people hurt, and for what? His passing, childish amusement? His bottomless desire for gratification? A cover to hide from the hurt of it all? Breston didn’t know anymore, and he didn’t want to. He couldn’t think about it anymore. He couldn’t take it.
Standing on trembling legs, Breston tentatively put both hands on the railing before gripping it firmly, whimpering as if it produced some sort of electric shock with his touch. He tried to remember when the last time he had felt scared like that was, but he realized that there was nothing even remotely comparable to hold onto. Before another thought could pass through Breston’s head, he took a quick, deep breath, closed his eyes, thrust one foot over the waist-high metal railing and allowed himself to fall. The wind whipped him with the force of a jet engine as he soared towards the ground, half-screaming, half-choking as it knocked the air out of him. Despite the unimaginable terror, and all the regret and the shame and the misery and the abject disappointment that was his nothing of a life, Breston couldn’t help but feel at peace now that it was finally all over. For a fraction of a second, Breston opened his eyes, and he never closed them again…

2024.05.13 10:45 Pearl_Zone Why Swimming Pools Cause Itchy Skin And How To Keep It From Happening
It feels amazing to dive into a refreshing pool during the sweltering summer months. But as soon as you get out of the water, you realize your skin is itching. Known as “swimmer’s itch,” this irksome drawback of swimming is surprisingly widespread. Read on to discover the reason behind skin irritation caused by pool water and how
swimming pool contractors in Dubai may assist avoid it happening again.
What Causes Swimmer’s Itch?
Cercarial dermatitis, another name for swimmer’s itch, is an allergic reaction to certain microscopic parasites that may survive in pool water. Infected snails discharge their parasites into the water. The larvae bury themselves in your skin, triggering an allergic reaction that leaves the areas of your body exposed to the water red, with itchy welts, and a rash.
Millions of individuals get swimmer’s itch in lakes, ponds, and seas every year, but it may also happen in swimming pools. There are several ways in which parasites might inadvertently enter public and backyard pools:
– On the bodies of infected snails or birds – Carried in on the feet or swimsuits of swimmers – Transported in contaminated water used to fill the pool
Once established, the parasites multiply. Chlorine and other chemicals meant to keep water clean and clear unfortunately do not always kill them off.
Itchy Skin Triggers
The timing and location of itchy welts point to the swimmer’s itch as the culprit rather than a simple allergic reaction to chlorine or other chemicals. Swimmer’s itch symptoms usually pop up within 12 hours but can start in as little as 10 minutes after swimming.
The location of the rash provides clues too. Swimmer’s itch usually affects the parts of your body that were most exposed to water and rubbing against your swimsuit including:
– Torso – Legs – Arms – Neck and face
The itchy rash typically lasts up to a week and may be accompanied by symptoms like:
– Hives – Tingling Skin – Small Blisters – Headache – Fever – Fatigue
Preventing Swimmer’s Itch
While swimmer’s itch cannot always be prevented, the key is keeping pool water clean and free of parasites through proper maintenance. Here are some top tips:
Test Water Frequently Check chemical levels including chlorine, pH, and alkalinity with test strips once a week or more when actively using your pool. Adjust chemicals if outside the normal range.
Shock Treat Regularly Using pool shock weekly or biweekly helps control algae growth and kill microorganisms. Make sure to allow proper contact time before swimming again.
Maintain Proper Filtration Run your pool’s filter system sufficiently each day and clean out filters regularly to remove waste and impurities from the water. Consider upgrading old cartridge filters to more efficient sand or DE filters.
Brushing Use a pool brush daily when in use to keep all surfaces smooth and remove any tiny pests clinging to walls and floors. Pay special attention to corners and the water line.
Vacuum Use your cleaning vacuum weekly or more often to get rid of debris from pool floors and surfaces where larvae or parasite eggs can hide.
Consider bringing in professional services for
pool cleaning in Dubai if you are struggling to stay on top of maintenance yourself. They use specialized techniques and equipment including pressure washing to keep water in tip-top shape.
While a swimmer’s itch is difficult to control, the payoff of preventing repeated itchy and painful rashes is well worth stepping up your pool maintenance protocol. Protect your family’s skin and keep your pool water sparkling and irritation-free by testing and adjusting chemistry properly, shocking regularly, and thoroughly brushing and vacuuming all surfaces inside the pool.
