So i just had a pretty interesting conversation with my dad and sister, we were talking about indonesia in general about how we miss home and stuff. And then my sister mentioned an article of "10 most drastic changes that occurs in Bali." she saw on her facebook feeds.
The link to the original article is here 10 Perubahan paling drastis dalam masyarakat Bali per2013. It is written in indonesian, you could go and translate the page to english, but theres some slang words that google translate couldnt detect.
So im just gonna copy-paste and fix some errors on translated page that i see on the article, keep in mind that these are based on an individual observation, not an actual fact, although some of the points are pretty accurate. There might be some grammatical errors on this translated version of mine, so pardon me.
1.Changes in livelihood
Before the 70s, the livelihood of the people of Bali as much as farmers and traders patches. In the 80s, livelihood began to shift to tourism employees (employees of the hotel, travel, guide, driver travel, etc.) and craftsmen.
In recent years, a wide variety of professions in the Balinese live by; ranging from phones dealer to drug dealer, ranging from entrepreneur to entrepreneur hotels dimly lit café, ranging from land brokers to brokers cases, ranging from a talk show moderator to key speaker seminars, ranging from parking attendants to debt collector
You may check the status of the jobs listed on the ID card, how many people still put "farmer"? Only in some parts on countryside that would probably have been very few in number.
2.Changes in Activity and Work Ethics
In an era where most of the people work as farmer, the work phase of Balinese people may look slow and tend to be relax. Of course, due to farming activities can not be rushed, all wearing the count period (for example: the new rice can be harvested after 3 months of age, can not be accelerated).
The amount of free time is what makes the people of Bali, in that era, always had time for activities to preserve the art and culture (for example: mekekawin, megeguritan, megenjekan, megambel, dancing, playing arja, ngerindik, flute, reading ejection, etc.) . So for people outside of Bali, Balinese work ethic at that time was considered casual.
The Baliese work ethic on society today has changed drastically, being super busy, " time-is-money "they said. These changes would occur as a result of a change so drastic livelihood and labor force explosion that resulted in competition be so tight. A day off to look at a family ceremony for example, ration in the hotel yard driver line already taken over others. Close the office once, customers becomes angry.
Thus, almost had no time to 'menyama-Braya'. Seeing people exchanged greetings on the streets, this time, was a rare occurrence, magic, or even seen the odd ("too ado, lebian said," they say), except in the remote villages at the foot of the hill there.
3.Changes on Names
May be debatable. But this is the fact that the changes of names of Balinese, today, are relatively drastic.
The generation that were born before or on 70s had a tons of variety of interesting names that people outside of bali would recognise it as unique. Called unique because it is really only occurs in Bali. For example: I Wayan Konten, I Made simpen, I Gede Dokar, Ni Luh pujut, Anak Agung Gede Raka, I Putu Danu, AA Putu Keramas, Ni Nyoman Ceraki.
In the Age 70-80, naming the child has begun to shift to the national, the capital artist name imitate or public figure: I Gede Doni (Doni actor Damara), I Kadek Toni (Toni Koeswoyo artist), Anak Agung Joni (Joni actor Indo), Ida Ayu Mariana (Mariana Dina artist), I Putu Deni, I Kadek Edi, Putu Gede Budianto, and so forth.
Recently, changes on naming a children are very drastic. There are 2 of the most prominent trends according to Pop Bali, namely:
leading to the name ' westernized '(they call it "international name"); or name of the ' to-india-indiaan '(supposedly "back to the pure Hindu India-based") That may be strange to people outside of Bali-especially who have lived long in Bali, is the tendency to not use "I" or "Ni" in front of the name, so the name became: Made Joddie Sijatmika, Luh Cyntia Nugraha, Ayu Michelle Arianta , Ambrose Putu Kusuma, or Nyoman Sri Siva Kemala Devi, Ida Bagus Krishna Aditama, Anak Agung Vedayanti Uttari wife.
Not less interesting, in the past many parents who are called by using the name of your child (children), for example: I Gede Batur who had a daughter Ni Ronji be called "Pan Ronji", and his wife was called "Men Ronji".
Now the opposite; my father's name or a large family (usually the most well-known) which is used by the child's last name, or the name of the husband's last name used by the wife-like 'family name' in western culture. For example: Ayu Michelle Arianta above is his daughter Dear Mr. I Putu Arianta board members, SSos, MM. Previously Bali was not familiar with the term "family name (big)", is now known.
The distinctive feature of the Balinese name, now, almost no trace except Putu, Wayan, Made, Nyoman, Nengah, and Ketut are still used, and even then without the "I" or "Ni" in front of it. It is said that, in the opinion of some people, "so that one day the child is ready to welcome the era of globalization." Hopefully.
4.Changes on Languages
Ten years ago, we would often hear the conversation, in the stalls or terminals, which use pure Balinese language without being mixed with another language. Currently, it is difficult to find. The only region where the language of Bali is quite often used only in the villages and countryside, and even then is not pure, since the TV soap opera broadcast nationwide starting to break down to the outposts. Most of the people of Bali have more use Indonesian.
Lucky because until now schools still teach the Balinese language, though in a very minimal portion of the time.
Besides effectiveness issues (speaking Bali supposedly "complicated"), many also argued that the use of Indonesian can minimize errors in the use of language 'sor-madia-singgih'.
5.Changes on Clothing
In the past, the name 'parchment' (cloth) is a daily wear. Currently only used in pickles kamen-specific (If you dont know what kamen is) events such as prayers or ceremonies and customs upakara. The rest, men and women of Bali has been like a modern-men and women wearing trousers or short.
In the past, Balinese traditional clothes using a certain grip, every detail of clothing symbolic meaning. Now, dress groom Bali for example, it has been difficult to distinguish from traditional clothes Sumtera which uses 'Baju Bodo' or bolero of Aziz (Indonesian comedian) Stuttering in OVJ event. It's been far from the original grip.
This change, of course not separated from the process of industrialization in general-where the faster the change, the shorter the cycle, the higher the demand, the more that can be produced, the more money flows into account.
6.Changes in Food and Beverages
Balinese appetite has also undergone many changes. Balinese food is usually spicy, lots of pepper and spices. Now it is no different to Javanese cuisine or Padang cuisine, tends to be sweet or medium hot. And that's not enough for the people of Bali at this time; trade of meatballs and soup is always more crowded than rice trade lawar or siobak Buleleng. This is clearly a representation of the shifting tastes of food.
A liquor called 'berem', has been rare these days. Balinese are more into wine and beer recently. Before these changes happened the Balinese do not know the name 'Turkish kebab' or 'sashimi'. Now, fast-food outlets such as these have grown very big and is always crowded by the Balinese.
7.Lifestyle and Social Changes
Livelihood and professions that changes also result in changes in lifestyle. Activities and Balinese life in antiquity are more around the village and banjar (small place for people around village to gather and to anything together) hall has now been shifted far.
Atu Aji, Gung Aji and Mr. De were formerly always have time to mekekawin in Banjar hall, now more often hang out in "Kudeta" or "Blue Eyes"-to entertain business associates. Pak Wayan, Made Pak and Pak Ketut that used to play Arja now busy this seminar-socializing it and this and that, to garner sympathy, and support voice and election pileg.
Atu Biyang and Bik I Luh were formerly often seen 'nyait Tamas', now more often go to shopping centers, botique or SPA. Gus Tu, Gung De and Yan ajus formerly diligent megambel now more frequent street racing in Renon field or dark car balapa Bypass Ngurah Rai a la the movie "Fast and Furious".
8.Changes in orientation and Mindset
The explosive growth of population plus migrants from outside the island, making the competition live in Bali are becoming increasingly stringent. Among other life issues, survivability has now become a major priority. Balinese community is no exception.
Back in the days, Balinese people, which is admired by Westerners, put the norm at the top of everything, they hold the principle of "lek" (shy, not good), and even to take something that they are entitled though. That's why foreigners love and trust completely with the Balinese. Not because the foreign stingy or utilize shyness Balinese antiquity, but because very appreciative mindset and orientation of the Balinese are far from greed.
The Balinese are now, tend to be pragmatic; when it comes to money / property no term "lek". This can be seen from how the merchants acung, in the tourist area, which is often half the force tourists to buy his wares. There are also cases in which the Balinese people entrusted to manage the company by foreigners, took over the company because of his name used in the certificate company. Another example is the sale of goods ancestral heritage, theft 'pretima', and so forth.
There is a shift in mindset and orientation that are very drastic in Bali. Whose name is 'mutual grindstones-loving-and-parenting', at this time, can only be found in lontar or event 'dharma discourse' (sermon), we find it difficult in the day-to-day implementation.
Solicitation "Lan dum on mebedik" (= although slightly let the joint) are increasingly infrequent. Individualitis dominate togetherness. Advantages yourself and the group is everything. 'Pang kuala profit' (= significant profit), 'Pang kuala maan paisa' (money milestones), 'Pang kuala wins' (= important win), finally 'pang kuala kenehe mission' (= important of all ambition keturutan).
"Anything requires profit". "Money is the most important thing". Inability to 'ngayah' (mutual assistance), for example, can now be replaced with a 'sin' in the form of money, which is important 'nu maan implant' (= can still be the difference between earning to pay a fine). Busyness of doing religion ceremonies, currently, does not have to invite the banjo, can be replaced by event organizers and catering -which is important to have money.
Whether consciously or not, admiration and trust towards strangers simplicity mindset and orientation of the Bali today, has slipped so far than in the past. In the past, many foreigners who adopt the Balinese to be a child or sibling, bahka to bequeath his property. Now? Rarely or perhaps never had been there longer.
9.Changes on Ethics
Along with lifestyle, orientation, and patterns of thought, Ethics had fairly drastic changes-both in speech and behavior.
Figure of a 'teacher' (rupaka, recitals and wisesa) first is a highly respected figure in Bali, in listening to the discourse and direction, wherever located. Currently, it is almost without limit.
Teachers Rupaka (father and mother) is only honored if it is able to buy a wide range of facilities desired by the child. Pengajian teachers (school teacher) only respected in the school, outside the school is not considered a nobody. Teachers Wisesa (government) only respected while still holding the stamp-serving institutions. So no power, not respected anymore.
Of course this is not one of the ethical degradation of the younger generation only. However they are much modeled the behavior of the teacher. Children dont want to hear what they parents told them to do, Parents words cant really be look upon, wishy-washy and make exceptions for your own comfort. The need for parental warmth was replaced with inanimate objects. Otonan (religious ceremony)been replaced with gifts birthday party at the cafe, car and vacation ticket.
Pupils did not hesitate to be out of school because the teachers put their students not as a foster child, but as a paying customer in the amount of money high school.
10.Changes on Religion (Mostly Balinese Hindu)
Not only the exterior, drastic changes also occur up to the inside, namely: religion.
Among the Balinese themselves much concerned about the possible change in the status of Bali as "the island of a thousand temples" soon will be distant memory.
There are 2 changes, in terms of religion professed by the people of Bali, which is prominent in recent years, namely:
First, the emergence of different sects among the Hindus themselves, who increasingly sharp lately. Previously almost no difference sects, there is only "Hindu Bali". Public awareness of Bali for allegedly "return to Hindu pure" based in India, which raises sects. Even supposedly there are up to no 'mesebelan' (sorrow) when a family member dies different sect. Secondly, the conversion of the original Balinese Hindus to non-Hindus are also massive in Bali. The most prominent is the conversion from Hinduism to Catholicism and Christianity. Conversion of Hindus to Islam was recently also increasing-especially through the wedding process. In the past, for those who are outside of Bali, each person who uses the name Putu, I Gusti, Anak Agung, or Ida Bagus, Ni Luh, Gusti Ayu, Ayu Agung, it is definitely the Hindus. Currently? Not necessarily. Bali is now very complex. To see what the religions of the people of Bali today, is not enough to just know his name, still need to look at other things, such as: whether the arm wearing the thread 'Tri Datu' (colored thread bracelet 'red-black-white')? Do never use the 'Bija' (ore rice) on the forehead?
