Tips on how to best use Nearl Alter's S2

2022.05.06 21:33 GrrrNom Tips on how to best use Nearl Alter's S2

Sike just use S3.
No? Ok fine but you're probably better off looking at some actual guide. What I'll be sharing instead is based on some brief observations and tips shared by other. There will be no numbers, no awe-inspiring video demonstrations and no scrutinisation of weird game mechanics.
But first, a preamble: Why S2?
Nearl (Blaze variant) and Nearl (Kal'tsit Variant) are perfectly viable skills as well, but they lack the charecteristic quirkiness that helps complete a squad.
S3 is arguable still the better skill, in terms of its sheer stylishness and power. But its ultimately still a damage-dealing/boss killing skill that can be substituted by another operator. Its still a unique skill, don't get me wrong... but its just another path to acchieve an already over-fufilled goal.
And S1 is just Blaze but single target and more damage. Cool, but not groundbreaking.
S2 however... just the fact that it doesn't take a deployment slot should be enough to grab anyone's attention.
This makes her on par with one of the most broken archetype/subclass in Arknights...... the Robots subclass, possibly even encroaching on Castle-3's long uncontested domain of no-deploy slot DPS???
... I jest, but on theory the two are meant to be played pretty similarily, only that Nearl deals much much much more damage and is capable of surviving much longer due to her stun and shield.
Basically, her S2 gives the player a free nuke, or a free 3 hit meat shield with entirely no drawbacks. That is why S2 stands out amongst all her other skills.
But enough with the shilling, I'm really just stating the obvious here. What my main focus is today is to collate all the tips I've heard from better Doctors on how to maximise S2's flexibility.

1.You DON'T have to force yourself to trigger the Kazimierz faction bonus

See the cool glowing portrait on Nearl right now? Yeah, you'll have to ignore it for a lot of times when you're working with S2. Cope, I suppose.
This tip was the hardest for me to internalise because the initial extra damage + lower cooldown seem too good to pass up. But as I start getting more familiar with Nearl's S2, I started to see the light (Nearl's Light, even)
You see, there are very few Kazimierz ops out there that actually needs to be deployed before you bring out Nearl. In fact, fuck it, I'll even go through every single one of them to show you why:
+Flametail/Wild Mane are meant to be deployed at the very start, aka when you are dealing with weaker mobs that won't justify the DP required for Nearl. (There are some rare exceptions to this dynamic though, such as in stages where tough enemies spawn early but remain inactive for a bit. This does justify triggering the faction bonus through Flametail/Wildmane... but since you have plenty of deployment slots anyways, why Nearl?)
+Fartooth/Platinum/Meteor are usually deployed once you've only just established a good ground defence, so generally around the time where you still have yet to maximise your deployment slots and where there is no real cause to use Nearl over a redeployer.
But of course, you can always force yourself to deploy Platinum/Fartooth/Meteor last such that you will have 0 slots left once their down... but remember that last deployed operators are always prioritised by enemies making it unwise to deploy them last.
+Gravel is probably the one used in most S2 demonstrations since she is cheap and has low cooldowns. However, there is very little reason to bring Gravel when you're already using Nearl who is capable of stalling very well on her own. Also, it defeats the point of Nearl not using up a deployment slot if you have to deploy Gravel before her. There is just very little situations where you would organically need the both at the same time.
+So far, the only way I've consistently and reliably triggered the first bonus through Blemishine, Ashlock and Whishlash but its really hard to justify bringing these 3 to a stage SOLELY just to trigger an extra hit and less redeployment time. Whishlash in particular is just not very excpetional so bringing her just for the benefit of one other operator aint that prudent.
Am I forgetting someone? Well if I can't remember her she must not be worth much at all then. Might as well throw her back into the trash where she was found
Anyways, its best to treat the act of triggering the faction bonus as just that: a bonus that arises through coincidence rather than forceful manipulation. In any event, 90% of the time, you will be triggering the bonus through Nearl herself since Nearl count as a Kazimierz operator. So its just her very first deployment where you will have to give up this bonus.
And this segues perfectly into the second tip/observation:

2. Nearl is at her strongest when you have your team fully assembled and requires minimal adjustments.

This is the point where you a. Can trigger her bonus every time and b. Where you will be facing strong/boss enemies and will need an additional source of damage to bolster your defences.
There's also an underlying implication here: S2 Nearl works best with cornerstones operators (Mudrock,Blaze, Thorn ect This is because cornerstones are meant to set-and-forget, meaning that you won't have to make any adjustments to your team that may disrupt Nearl's Kazimierz bonus chain.
(For example: If Im using a more helidrop-focus team instead of a more cornerstone-based team, it means that I will have to constantly redeploy operators here and there, thereby ensuring that Nearl would rarely get to trigger the Kazimierz bonus through herself).
Essentially, you must reduce your sole helidrop option to Nearl and Nearl alone in order to maximise her utility. So no Sutr, no Silverdaddy, no Eyja and no S2 Skadi (Preposterous!).
But its ok as Nearl has plenty of damage to fill in the roles of all the great helidroppers. With an additional stun and shield to boot, she can even be a superior option in certain scenarios (such as stalling a Colossus).
Also, using a cornerstone-based team gives you a roundabout way to justify bringing Blemishine: Since you will most likely be using Mudrocksynergises with Blemishine who you can deploy last and tada, you can now trigger S2 Nearl bonus

3. Last but not the least, its important to remember that Nearl isn't a truly free nuke option

Yeah, I lied at the intro, sue me. With fear of stating the obvious, Nearl is NOT a fast redeployer, which means that she actually pretty expensive to deploy, with the cost ramping up each time she is used.
Maybe out of sheer habit arising from my over-reliance of Phantom, I've found myself deploying Nearl in situations where she isn't particularly needed (such as getting a satisfying AOE stun against filler mobs), only to find myself desperately needing her to finish off a leaked enemy 30 seconds later.
Hence its best if you know the stage well enough to predict when she might be needed most, to avoid using her unneccesarily.
But do note that the converse could also be true: Withholding her to the extent where you end up clearing the stage without using her. Obviously, there isn't any problem here since the stage itself has been cleared, but it does make you feel a sense of pity since you could've bring someone else more useful to the stage. I've certainly felt this way plenty of times and started doubting whether it was even worth M3ing Nearl's S2. I reconcile this by telling myself things such as "If I've had a lapse in focus and let an enemy slipped through, I would've thank god that I brought Nearl" or "If my Thorns was just a little bit lower levelled, Nearl would've absolutely saved the day by stunning the boss", or various things along those lines.
Remember, one of Nearl's core function is that of an emergency stop-gap measure, and just because things didn't go awry this time doesn't mean it can't in the future. That's why Nearl has quickly become a permanent fixture in my squad, in anticipation of my inevitable failures.
To conclude, Nearl S2 is just extremely convenient to have. Maximising her utility does require you to play a certain way... but you no one ever said that you have to maximise her strengths, and that's the beauty of her design. Her S2 is meant to be versatile and possess minimal drawbacks. She can be slapped onto any team and function regardless, without neccessitating any change in playstyles, with her use remaining unaltered as a emergency kill button or a solid stall option.
I hope this has helped some of yall who are also interested in investing in Nearl's S2. Im fully aware that her S2 isn't some underrated gem or a non-meta pick, if anything, its one of the most popular CC options in CN. My post here is just to help pique interest for casual players like me and I hope it has acchieved its purpose or was at least entertaining :)
TLDR: Nearl S2 good because versatile and no deploy slot.

Knocked unconscious two medic along with the whole security team, beaten a personnel to - I believe - near death, broken one's right arm, and stabbed right through my leg! He even managed to take down BOTH Siege and Indra with BARE HANDS while they're trying to restrain him. (sigh) Well, just put him here for now. We'll use anesthetic next time. I'mma go change my bandage. Meanwhile, replace all the damaged equipments will ya? And give Siege another dose of painkiller too."*

Following the new CN-1-F Protocol, this entry was cut from local daily newspaper, hot news section to avoid unwanted attentions:
"... Yesterday, a Siestan scout team of five members was performing an expedition in Siesta outskirt at night when suddenly, they spotted a tall humanoid figure, believed to be an Oni, standing 50 meters away from their position, holding what seems to be a long guardian gun, with dead Reunion soldiers scattered around. After a while, the figure finally noticed the team, and raised it's weapon toward them. All members immediately opened fire with their crossbows, to no effect. Then the figure returned fire, killed three team member and fatally injured the fourth in a quick succession. The team leader immediately ran off, and managed to hide behind a nearby log. From his shoulder-mounted camera, a big shadow can be seen slowly approaching the leader, as he raise his crossbow at it while requesting for backup. Video feed was then abruptly cut. The next morning, backup arrived, only to see the bodies of four members with their broken weapons, leaned against the log, body pepped with abnormally large bullet holes, 6 centimeters to be precise. Two members have multiple 32cm deep stab wounds similar to knife stabs. Another member have half of his head missing, identified to be caused by a very fast projectile. The team leader was later found completely unharmed, curled into a fetal position inside the hollow log, appears to suffer from heavy mental trauma. Further investigation and witness debrief currently pending ..."
Revenant: " Well yeah, I did it. Don't blame me, they shot first. Mistook them for those white masked bastards... what'd ya call them? Reunions, right. Just self defense, boss. At least I spared the last guy."

Chris was born in a small colony in Venus. After returned Earth, he graduated Oxford University with excellent score at the age of 19, and was destined to be the successor of his father's medical megacorporation. But he found no joy at doing so, and signed up for the incoming world war 4 as a special infantry trooper, despite his family's disagreement. He was then promoted to Private First Class for his exceptional combat ability and bravery in battle. In 2140, after the war have ended, Chris moved to Olympus, one of the few country on New Terra unaffected by the Eden war, to start a new life, working as a desk worker in Prototech Global - a corporation specialises in cybernetic implant manufacturing. After two months, Chris suddenly realized he had no interest in paperwork, but for the thrill of combat. So he became a mercenary, taking the codename Revenant.
Chris is overall a charismatic, easygoing and surprisingly ethical person and can converse on a variety of topics. He also have a good sense of humor, and often add jokes into conversation. In his free time, Chris enjoys playing guitar and EDM, playing video games and practicing his combat skill. However, when in battle, Chris become extremely hostile, and seems to take great joy in systematically killing his enemies in many ways, often proceed to attack further even when the enemy have already retreated. However, he claims to oppose senseless killing, and only kill when necessary. Also, it is worth noting that Chris have a deadly phobia of syringe needles, possibly from childhood, so please do your best to keep him away from the medical bay and away from Ansel. We don't want 1/5 of our staffs quit their job like last time. Don't believe me? Here is Ansel's resign letter, he almost quit.

The rifle, named "DREKAR M47", is a mid-long range, 40 round mag, fully automatic weapon extensively used by the Federation military force (parallel Lungmen guard department maybe?) as the standard issue rifle due to it's lightning-fast rate of fire, it's accuracy of a magnum and it's lightweight design. It's firing mechanic is different from our world's firearms since it doesn't require Art magic to fire. Instead, it uses electromagnetic force to launch 12mm solid projectiles twice as fast as a normal Sankta gun, have enough damage to make an enemy's head explode to pieces with only one shot.
The sidearm, which he always carry with him in pocket even when asleep, called "STRYKER MOD-2", is a mid range, 17 round mag, semi-auto pistol issued to both Olympus Police Department and civilian. Like the long gun, it also use electromagnetic force to fire. Although not as powerful as the rifle, it is still more effective than most Terran-made firearms.
Revenant also owned a semi-auto shotgun, a box-fed LMG with holo scope, two smgs vaguely resembles Exusiai's burst rifle, another STRYKER MOD-2 but painted black, and a maskman rifle with built in target-highlight system. All guns have some sort of built-in infinite battery, so they don't need recharge after use. However, Hex hardly ever use these weapons, saying he was not trained for those.
(by the way, ye, that's right. In Terra, Kriss Vector = Burst rifle. There's hardly any firearms in arknights can shoot full auto, other than the handheld minigun of a Lateranian God named Apostolic Knight)

An excerpt from Revenant's codex page:
" Name: Eden's Gate, the fourth world war.
Time: 2123 - 2140
Military casualties: estimated 90000 - 95000
Civilian casualties: estimated 35000 - 40000
Total financial cost: 6.9 trillion colophons
Planets affected: all 8 planets
Result: Neither side won.
The Eden's Gate was a conflict fought in the Solar System by forces of the Federation Navy and Omega Republic Navy, serving as the culmination of decades of tension building up in the Second Cold War and a false conspiracy conducted by TSA Genetics to cause a conflict. The fighting centered primarily in the Outer Planets - notably the Jupiter planetary system, though fighting was also conducted amongst the Inner Planets such as New Terra (formerly Mars). The war saw the destruction of millions of both civilian and military spacecraft, the near-collapse of Xyra-B Station, the complete devastation of Neptune due to constant nuclear bombardment, the destruction of numerous cities on Earth, New Terra, Venus and Uranus, with several billion civilian casualties. Eden's Gate was the second major interplanetary war fought by humanity. Even though the war ended five years ago, the whole galaxy is still trying to recover from all the damage caused. TSA Genetics collapsed right after the war ended..."

Note: Revenant is a baseline human, therefore he don't give a shit about headpats. If you tap this guy, there will be a chance he will - instead of saying something positive like other operators - put on his helmet, instantly leave the room he's in, and increase the morale consumption rate of operators in the same room by 15-20% for 10 seconds. Orange interact bubbles will rarely appear over Revenant's head. Also, if you're managed to have him, you will also get two new furniture : one called "ammo fabricator". It's a big rectangle device resembles a printer, used to print ammunitions for Revenant's rifle and pistol, using metal scraps. You have to put it somewhere in the facility, otherwise Revenant will be deployed with only his knife. Revenant can sometime be seen putting empty magazines into the machine. The other one is a military-styled, black and grey, foldable chair.
Voice Lines:
Appointed as assistant: Just saying, I'm not good at paperwork, so I'll only be your personal guard.
Talk 1: Sup' boss! Have som' time for a bottle of beer? No? Well, I'mma go grab Big-Cat then, or Zima maybe. Hope they don't get throw into the drunk tank like last time.
Talk 2: Doc, sometime you reminds me of my father.... Huh? Just... forget what I said earlier. You still got work to do.
Talk 3: Boss, hear me out. So I got this new anime plot. Basically there's this high school girl who hav - wait... why are you running?
Talk after promotion 1: Oh, I used to have many friends in the marine. For example, there was this Asian guy named Jason. A cool, laid back dude from the Tanker Division that always seems to die-hard for his country. We were quite close, you know. Shame, he died on the second day of service. A heroic death. We and my squad were surrounded by Omega force that night. Ammo was running low, and the enemy were many, we can't hold them off. The only way for me and my squad to retreat is to have someone to suppress the enemy, then the others will move the opposite way while they're taking cover. Jason was the first to volunteer. He rushed out of cover and began spraying at the advancing enemy with his heavy machinegun, killed about twenty of them. While the Omegas were taking cover, we successfully retreated outside. Hours later, reinforcements arrived and destroyed the enemy. After the battle, they found Jason's disfigured body lying next to his empty machinegun. He was a good soldier... I lost my left arm in that raid too, a rifle bullet completely sawed it off. This one? Prosthetic implant, function as perfect as a real one, but I prefer real more.
Talk after promotion 2: I think it's better for me to disguise as a Sankta than an Oni, since Oni doesn't use guns, which make it suspicious. Last time I entered Laterano, everyone on the street just stare at me, because of my cardboard "horns" and the "weird" rifle on my back. They even sent a fuckin executor to follow me around my whole time in Laterano. Was going to buy a LED halo and a pair of reflective wings. They have a 50% discount. Still, it's too expensive for a broke-as-shit guy like me. Since house rent in Lungmen ain't cheap. Must be three times the average price. Also, the house owner thought I'm infected because of my bionic arm, so I had to mouth-fight a lot just to keep the original price from raising.
Talk after Trust increase 1: Hmm... Fifth try, and still can't manage to kill the final boss. Guess just you and me are still not enough. Lemme check if Hoshi is online. She play quite good, and have already beaten it TWICE! But, honestly, Why did they make the final boss so hard to just deal damage to !?
Talk after Trust increase 2: Hey doc. What's that? SilverDaddy (sarcastic name for SilverAsh) begging for bloodline again? Listen, I got you this nanotech bottom guard. They harden in respond to physical trauma. Hopefully it can protect you from Kal'tsit's angery scissor. Hopefully.
Talk after Trust increase MAX: I was sitting in my bedroom when the disruption happened. Managed to grab onto my arsenal and this fabricator, along with a codex folder and my personal stuffs, before got teleported here. By the way, boss, got you this. A page in my codex file about Eden's Gate, since you always asking me about the war.
Idle: ... Just another day in the office.
Onboard: Chris, codename Revenant, solo mercenary and assassin. Are you Doctor, the one who hired me? Well, let's get to business, then. Just gimme the paycheck, show me who to kill, and go watch the "murder" section on daily hot news the next day. Simple, isn't it?
Watching battle record: Hell of a battle, eh?
Promotion 1: Hmm... thanks. By the way, love the promo badge design.
Promotion 2: Well, guess working for Rhodes is my full time job now.
Added to squad: I prefer to work alone but... whatever.
Appointed as squad leader: Most squad mates I've known are only good at getting themselves killed. Let's see how will this squad be.
Depart: Let's get this done, then maybe have a sandwich or two later.
Begin operation: Sure, let's go for the kills
Selecting operator 1: (radio voice) I'm ready.
Selecting operator 2: (radio voice) Dropping down.
Deployment 1: (deep, somewhat maniacal, radio distorted laugh)
Deployment 2:(radio voice) Need cover fire, I'm moving in!
Using skill 1: (radio voice) Grenade out!
Using skill 2: (radio voice) Eat this.
Using skill 3: (radio voice) God mode.
4-Star: Waite minute. Busy killing remaining enemies, boss. (rapid gunshot)
3-Star: That's a lotta fun. I'mma go "have my way" with the sandwich (chewing sound: Om nom nom...)
Sub 3-Star: Well, at least they took heavier casualties than us. Right?
Operation failure 1: (radio voice) Fall back NOW! I'll cover fire!
Operation failure 2: (radio voice) Requesting med-evac immediately!
Assigned to facility: As I remember, our work contract doesn't include "manual work without pay". But, anyway...
Tap (scenario 1) : Hey boss. Beer?
Tap (scenario 2) : The hell you're doin...!? (put on helmet and leave room)
Trust tap: How can I help you?
Title: Arknights! (have a 20% chance to say "Arknuts" instead of "Arknights", accompanied by a short, sarcastic laugh)
Greeting: Hey, boss! how's goin'?
*) Will speak in a voice similar to Ansel's, but a little bit deeper, implies that Revenant is the parallel universe's doppelgänger to our eunuch rabbit boi.
think he might look like this. basically another buffed up, bulletproof male Exusiai, capable of killing a whole squadron of reunions.

[SelfChallengeMode][Lungmen Outskirt] All male Operator 400 kills
Once in a while, I will share some, IMO, amazing achievements from our community, usually by self-imposing hard rules for certain missions. It not only shows the limit of the game but also how much our community can achieve! Of course, they are also quite interesting (at least for me). A brief recap:
  1. [Lungmen Outskirt] 400 kills with E0 Level 1 operators only
  2. [Lungmen Outskirt] 3 Operators + 400 kills
Today, I would like to share the achievement by another player: 咸鱼银狼@bilibili, who choose to use Male operator only for the Lungmen Outskirt. Although it is on CN server, but this is in a quite early days (back in June 19). The selection of Male operator should be the same as the global server now.
The link is here (I don't have the permission to re-upload to youtube, sorry. You can disable the "danmaku" subtitles by the sliding button on the lower-left-to-mid corner. If you are on mobile, then you can only watch 6 mins without installing the app on mobile. Desktop version has no limit)

A few interesting points:
  1. As aways, SilverDaddy carry the game.
  2. Noir Corne solo Avenger to delay the waves for redeployment is a common technique in these videos.
  3. Note that the only male Medic is Ansel: do you know that he can heal the operators at a super long distance?
