2024.04.20 15:10 EffectiveConcern Anyone here HLAB27 negative?

I’ve had terrible problems with my spine and musculo-skeletal system for over a decade, tried “everything” and nothing works. Seen many doctors, blah blah.. my symptoms are quite consistent with AS, but no gene and no confirmation, nobody gives a fuck and just suggest exercise as if I haven’t been fuckin trying that for years.
I got a suggestion that made me revisit this idea of AS, but really no idea what to do since doctors see black and white and don’t like to think much or look at the whole person it seems.
Those of you that have been diagnosed but being negative, how did that happen? What are you doing now? Tell me your story.

2024.04.20 15:10 aahh_okay New to Librarian Role Advice Pkease

Hi Everyone!
I started the library role at my small school (less than 300 students aged 3-12) at the beginning of 2024. I've never had a role like this before so really have no clue what I'm doing, I can only go off what I've observed and experienced in visiting libraries myself. So I'm one term in and am still feeling quite lost. Not even close to making ends meet time wise. I'm okay with that now, it won't be forever. I feel like I'm placing a lot of expectation on myself though and I think I need a bit of feedback either keep me going or change something.
So here's the story...
I took over the role feom 2 staff members who each had clearly defined roles. One for purchases and events organizing, the other for cataloguing and updating students, chasing overdues etc. I think as individuals in those roles they did very well, given the minimal time they were given (both had full time roles elsewhere in the school) and their completing priorities with those other roles (mental load etc). They would both also do one week day lunch time library duty to assist student Librarians with reshelving.
The issue is, the library physical was just not in order when I took over. I think they just didn't have the time or energy for it. And I understand that. I see myself as fortunate to have the opportunity to give it more time to try and get some order and efficiency.
Primary Fiction was shelved by first letter of Author's surname only. Within each letter anything could be anywhere. The shelves were so full they had added rows on top of the shelves that were continually messy due to being a little high for some and having no support behind.
Similar for NF. Books were reshelved in hundreds - eg all the 200s we're together but not in order. Very difficult to find the book you're looking for. The shelves were so full it was difficult to remove or replace a book. Many books are greater than 20 years old. I know that doesn't mean it's a bad book but I feel like there should be a 'spread of currency' (no idea if that's a thing!?!) particularly in the science area. It is also very animal heavy.
I haven't yet begun looking at Junior Fiction.
There was also a large cupboard of books purchased by the librarian before thise before me that have been covered but not catalogued. There was also some books that had been removed from the shelves and have been weeded.
So I've made a step wise plan for me, mostly pertaining to NF but will likely apply to fiction areas too.
  1. Remove excess books - excess multiples (max 2 of same title, max 5 of a 'type' eg frogs, books in poor condition, books that are outdated.
  2. Make sure remaining books are in order and neatly on shelves. Label shelves with areas interest to assist with understanding where subjects come from and get returned to
  3. Support student Librarians to understand the system and reshelve correctly
  4. Do stocktake to see if shelves match computer system (then what? Remove missing from inventory?)
  5. Provide tablet for students to search books and hopefully find them!
  6. Start to purchase to fill in NF 'gaps'
  7. Start looking at books not borrowed for 10+ years and consider moving them on.
So far I've gone through the NF and removed quite a few books (I think in the order of about 150 books from a catalogue of over 2000). I have permission from the principal, deputy and business manager to organise sending these to charity. I have also invited the teaching staff to have a look at them and take any they like for their classrooms. There is now space on the shelves to comfortably access the books and space for new books (many of which will be books from the big cupboard). I'm planning to use the top of the shelves for displaying books (they're 3 tiered wooden bookshelves). The shelves are nearly in.exact order. It's taken a lot of my personal time to get it done, and I feel.good about it because I know I won't be comfortable until the space is functional for the students.
Here's the thing -
I was feeling really good about where I was up to but the feedback from my email inviting teachers to take 'unwanted' library books was not good. They felt the students need evey book, even if they're old, in poor condition or multiple copies. Some took a lot of books for their classroom. I couldn't quite work out of it was a change issue or a genuine concern about the library and I've felt very yucky about it since. I still feel strongly that I needed to remove books to make the space usable and develop it into a living, evolving library.
Teachers also said they like to have multiples of a fiction title in case more than one student wants to borrow. I think I was a bit curt in my reply when I suggested they could wait until the one the wanted was available. Some of the teachers basically said books are different to toys/classroom materials. I don't know, are they?
I also feel like the teachers are kind of rallying around the previous 2 Librarians, like what I'm doing is an insult to them. I previously asked them what they thought about NF in order and one thought it might be worth trying and the other said it was a waste of time. I definitely don't intend to undermine them and their efforts, but I also feel like the current state of the library is unusable and a direct reflection of me and I'm very unhappy with it.
So help me out - what's your take on my action plan? Any suggestions? How do you balance subject matters and multiple copies? and what do you think about taking books off the shelf? Do you generally experience push back? How do you go about deciding what to remove? How do you manage big changes and upset staff?
I visited another school library last week and the librarian there gave me great information and feedback and agreed I needed to make some changes but that was before the upset teachers etc now I'm feeling like I should have come here first...
Thanks, and give it to me straight!

2024.04.20 13:54 Vir-victus What were the activities of the VOC in South Sulawesi at the end of the 16th century? How much of an impact did it have on everyday life in the region? (PART II)

Continuing right were we left of with this question from AskHistorians with Parts 4 of 5 from the original thread (make sure you read Part I first!):
The mid-1630s were generally bad years for South Sulawesi for reasons other than the depredations of the Dutch blockade of 1634-1635. In 1636 a devastating "plague" - perhaps associated with increasing commercialization, which introduced previously unknown pathogens to the peninsula - killed 60,000 people in and around Makassar alone in just forty days. So the ''Diaries'' entry for July 2, 1636, is dark indeed:
Spoke Karaeng Matoaya [the capable chancellor of Gowa and king of Talloq]: "We must all protect ourselves from raging epidemics and starvation"
Three months later, Karaeng Matoaya "died of disease" at the age of 63 after having dominated South Sulawesi for 43 years. During his long tenure as king and chancellor, he had made it possible for Makassar to grow into one of the great cities of the world and had introduced Islam, galley ships, muskets, coinage, and an array of other innovations in South Sulawesi society. He was to be missed. According to the Talloq Chronicle:
He was loved by merchants, by vassals, by anaq karaeng [princes], by the tumailalang [ministers], by the gallarrang [regional nobility], by the household.
The death of such an inspiring ruler must have shaken Gowa-Talloq's self-confidence as well.
This is all to explain the treaty of 1637 in which the seemingly interminable war between Gowa and the VOC was finally put to an end. As we've seen, the governments in Makassar were growing tired of war. The VOC, too, sought a more pacifist strategy under the new Governor-General Anthony van Diemen, who had already negotiated a treaty with the West Javanese sultanate of Banten in 1636 and had attempted to establish general peace in Maluku. So van Diemen sailed into Makassar on June 22, 1637, negotiated with Sultan Ala'uddin for four days, and peace returned in June 26. In this treaty the VOC factory in Makassar was reestablished after two decades, Gowa and Talloq promised to ban their merchants from sailing either to the Portuguese capital at Melaka (Malacca) or to the spice-producing island of Seram, and the VOC in their turn acknowledged the vast dominion of Makassar.16 This peace lasted for sixteen years, until 1653.
The return of the Dutch to Makassar was hardly welcomed by the English and, presumably, other established merchants there. The Dutch began buying spices in the port and, by their habit of "prodigally bidding more than the current price," soon drove prices up. Worse, the strengthening of the Dutch monopoly in the spice islands of Maluku meant that fewer spices of poorer quality (e.g. cloves mixed with useless stalks) were reaching Makassar. Although anti-Dutch rebels were active in the Malukan island of Ambon until 1646 and offered to sell great numbers of cloves to whoever would provide them with weapons, Gowa-Talloq - constrained by its 1637 treaty and cautious of provoking another war with the Dutch - provided only limited support.
Eventually a bahar (app. 800 grams) of cloves, which sold for 100 reals in 1641, were valued at 225 reals by 1643 and 250 reals by 1645. The English even worried that Makassar would lose its clove supply entirely, although that threat did not yet materialize. So in some ways, peace with the Dutch menaced Makassar's economic base.17
Yet Gowa-Talloq expanded to an unprecedented extent in these years, north into Minahasa and beyond, west into the east coast of Borneo, and south into many Nusa Tenggara islands like Lombok and Timor. Makassar itself remained among the greatest cities in Southeast Asia. Although new forms of trade not involving the Dutch did emerge, including a great upsurge in trade with the Spanish Philippines (such as reselling English weapons to Manila), often Gowa-Talloq's expansion in these sixteen years were because of the Dutch and their commercial demand, not in spite of them.
One example might be the invasion of Timor. With relations restored with the VOC, Gowa-Talloq envisioned a plan to make Makassar the primary supplier of sandalwood for the Company. Larantuka, a major Portuguese settlement in between the sandalwood island of Timor and South Sulawesi, posed the only obstacle. Despite the long-standing friendship with the Portuguese, Tumammaliang ri Timoroq, king of Talloq, voyaged south with around 6,000 troops to take Larantuka. He was defeated in a show of Portuguese valiance and moved his army to Timor instead, where he converted local chieftains to Islam and took 4,000 Timorese slaves back home. However, many of Gowa-Talloq's newly won Timorese domans were regained by the Portuguese when Tumammaliang ri Timoroq died soon after his return. Ultimately, Gowa-Talloq failed to become the primary sandalwood exporter to the Company and friendly relations between Portugal and Makassar soon resumed. This episode, however, shows how Gowa-Talloq now had the choice to ally with the Company against its traditional allies in order to pursue new economic strategies.18
Another way the VOC bolstered Makassar's fortunes in the 1640s was by conquering Portuguese Melaka (Malacca). In the long term the conquest of Melaka allowed the Dutch to focus more on strengthening their spice monopolies instead of the Portuguese, and so was a bad thing for South Sulawesi. But in the short term it redirected the entire Portuguese (and much of the Indian Muslim) trading network to Makassar, where the Portuguese could be as safe "as if they had no enemies in India [i.e. Southeast Asia as well as India], since they had never once been attacked there."
The fall of Melaka also led to the emigration of the three most prominent merchants of Makassar in the 1640s and 1650s. These were the Portuguese Francisco Vieira de Figueiredo, a personal friend of Gowa and Talloq's kings who was "the author of, and driving force behind, the [Makassar] rulers' strong involvement in trade," and the Indian Muslims 'Mapule' and 'Mamet Saphy.'19 Mamet Saphy was the agent of Golkonda, an amazingly opulent Indian sultanate (hence why, even today, Golconda in English means "a source of wealth"). Golkonda's extensive trading network flooded Southeast Indian markets with luxury Indian textiles at cheap prices, and South Sulawesi's integration into this network further increased both its commercial ties with both India and the rest of Southeast Asia and the quantity of fine Indian cloth in the peninsula.20
Finally, we should note other ties between Gowa-Talloq and the VOC in this period of peace. For example, consider Karaeng Pattingalloang, chancellor (tumabicara-butta) of Gowa throughout this period. An intensely inquisitive man, he wanted to buy the following from the VOC: "various rarities, including two globes, a large world map or mappamundi, with the description in the Spanish, Portuguese or Latin language [all of which Pattingalloang could read], a book describing the whole world, atlas in Latin, Spanish or Portuguese with its maps." Three years later the Dutch finally procured "two globes of 157-160 inch circumference, of wood or copper, from which the north and south poles can be placed" to give to Pattingalloang. Clearly, the elite of Makassar recognized - even respected - the scientific and geographic prowess of the Dutch. And in their turn, the greatest Dutch poet of the era, Joost van den Vondel, commemorated Pattingalloang in a way that is very different from the poem I quoted in my first post:
East India House sends a globe [Dien Aardkloot zend 't Oostindisch huis,]
To the great Pattingalloang, [Den Grooten Pantagoule t'huis,]
Whose endlessly curious brain, [Wiens aldoorsnuffelende brein,]
Finds a whole world too small. [Een gansche wereld valt te klein.]
But this peace - and even respect - was not to last either.21
16 There are very few sources in English on this treaty of 1637. I draw largely on a summary of the Corpus Diplomaticum Neerlando Indicum, a venerable collection of primary sources in Dutch. Leonard Andaya discusses it briefly in his 1978 article "Treaty conceptions and misconceptions: A case study from South Sulawesi." I've seen a dissertation from Leiden University which was pretty interesting in its interpretation of the treaty, but I'll wait until it's published/gets cited more.
17 From Villier's article "One of the Especiallest Flowers in our Garden"
18 This is extensively discussed in Lords of the Land, Lords of the Sea: Conflict and adaptation in early colonial Timor, 1600-1800 by Hans Hagerdal, p.83-91. From a Timorese perspective, this invasion is interesting because it was the first major foreign invasion of the island, forever remembered in the collective memory for that reason alone, and made links to Talloq a means of gaining legitimacy for many Timorese chiefdoms.
19 These are VOC transliterations, and modern transliterations of their actual names would probably be quite different. For instance, 'Mamet Saphy' is also called 'Mameth Chaffia,' so I am almost completely sure his name would nowadays be written as 'Mahmud Jaffar' or something similar.
20 See Heather Sutherland's "Trade, court and company: Makassar in the later seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries." Vieira has a 1967 biography written about him, Francisco Vieira de Figueiredo: A Portuguese Merchant-Adventurer in Southeast Asia, 1624-1667, which, despite its age, still remains excellent.
21 All from Anthony Reid's "A Great Seventeenth Century Indonesian Family: Karaeng Matoaya and Pattingalloang of Tallo'"

War returns

By the early 1650s the specter of war haunted South Sulawesi again. There were multiple proximate causes of this. First, in 1652 the Dutch had captured ships belonging to Vieira and said that they would confiscate Vieira's portion of the cargo, while returning to Makassar those goods that belonged to the Gowa-Talloq government. Gowa-Talloq's rulers claimed that the significant majority of the cargo was actually owned by themselves; the Dutch doubted this, provoking distrust. Second, ever more stringent enforcement of the Dutch spice monopolies led to increasing clashes with Makassar shipping and a rise in tensions.
In 1651, Majira, a chieftain in spice-producing Ambon, rebelled against the authority of the Company and its ally, the sultan of Ternate. This was in direct response to a new Dutch restriction on the planting of clove trees in Majira's district, part of an unending stream of revolts in early 17th-century Maluku against the VOC's monopolies which often ruined the trade-dependent local economy. But unlike in the 1640s, this time Gowa-Talloq came to the rebels' aid with a fleet of 30 to 100 ships. So the peace ended and the second war between the VOC and South Sulawesi began.22
Most of the war was fought to the east, in the myriad islands of Maluku and in islands off eastern Sulawesi. But the VOC had a devastating weapon to use against Makassar; the blockade. The Dutch blockade of 1653-1655 was far more effective than ever before. For almost three years trade was at a near-standstill in the port. Vieira noted that the aristocracy remained dedicated to the war, the common people in the metropolis were having serious doubts:
For up till now they were enjoying peaceful prosperity and the kingdom was well supplied with textiles which they bought and with spices which they sold, whereas this year they did not receive a single piece of cloth, nor did anyone buy their spices; and they wonder whether the same will not happen again in future years.
Here we have, as you say, an example of how "the average person" could indeed "have much to fear from the VOC." But eventually even the nobility were in consternation, as Vieira, an ardent supporter of war against the Dutch, noted:
even the kings and queens complained that they had nothing to wear, apart from the fact that there was no trade at all. The people all complained and wanted peace, and many of them bitterly hated me, since they realized that I was the cause of the war.
This also shows how deeply dependent Makassar was on foreign trade for basic commodities such as cloth. During two generations of prosperity the city had become accustomed to luxury, and so the cutting of trade was that much more shocking. Of course, Vieira must be somewhat exaggerating, since we know the English were buying tortoiseshell and Vieira himself was buying cloves in 1654. But the impact of the blockade must indeed have been quite significant.23
The difficult war - the most difficult Gowa-Talloq had fought for almost a century - led to economic hardships in other ways. Pressed on money, the government abandoned its careful management of the currency system (which had had a stable value for several decades) and filled the theoretically gold coins with copper.
But we should still note that the vast majority - almost 90% - of the population of South Sulawesi was agrarian. Again, for the average person - probably a rice paddy farmer far removed from Makassar - the VOC would have posed a threat only by provoking the rulers of Gowa to call upon his or her corvee labor. While many Europeans thought only of the city when they discussed Gowa-Talloq, the simple reality was that like almost everywhere in the seventeenth-century world, the average man was a farmer in the countryside, distant from the centers of power.
In 1655 peace was made, as the VOC itself felt the economic costs of war and saw potential threats in Aceh, Palembang, Banten, Ceylon, and especially the Chinese coast with Zheng Chenggong's Ming loyalists. The treaty involved a reaffirmation of the VOC monopoly but did not involve any particular humiliation for Gowa-Talloq. Nevertheless, neither side was satisfied and war would resume in 1660, when a major fort in Makassar would fall, for the first time, to the Dutch.

Makassar in the late 1560s

In 1652 the Dutch had convinced the sultan of Ternate to execute the 'eradication policy,' in which all clove trees outside of Dutch-run plantations were destroyed to make the monopoly easier and create an artificial scarcity, raising prices. Worse, by the mid-1650s rebellions against Ternate had been suppressed with Dutch help. Makassar was in need of a "painful commercial reorientation" as the spice trade collapsed: in 1654 the price of a bahar of cloves in Makassar was 360 mas (around 200 reals), but by 1659 the price had more than doubled to 800 mas.
Novel forms of trade emerged. Both the English and Mamet Saphy chose to concentrate on tortoiseshell, with the English in particular hoping that tortoiseshell, wood, wax, ivory, and goods like Japanese copper that were drawn to Makassar by its entrepot status would make up for the loss of the spice trade. But even these goods were considered too expensive in a Dutch report in 1656, and in any case there was generally insufficient demand for them, especially with the Chinese market (which was much more interested in tortoiseshell or sea cucumbers than spices) in utter case due to the Ming-Qing transition.
Political instability ensued after the death of Pattingalloang; although there was rarely open conflict, Sultan Hasanuddin (king of Gowa) and two members of the Talloq royal dynasty clashed bitterly with each other over who to appoint as chancellor. And with the great tensions between Makassar and the VOC, the English bemoaned that "these kings by their avarice in business are degenerating from their ancestors" by forcing merchants to sell at low prices.
All in all, said the English, "the trade of this place is not as it formerly was."
But one missionary in the late 1650s was still astonished by the liberality of Makassar:
Many Malays also repaired thither, and I have seen an ambassador there from the great Nabob, that is of Golconda. No man paid anchorage or any other duty there, and saving the presents that captains of ships and merchants of note made to the Sumbane, [king of Gowa] all the trade was free. This made it the universal mart of those parts of the world.
Makassar was a city in decline, yes, but a great city nevertheless, still insistent on its doctrine of free trade. The city's splendor would not die until it was brutally dismembered by the Dutch and the Bone Bugis during the Makassar War (1666-1669), when Gowa-Talloq's empire was destroyed.23
22 Majira's insurrection, often called the Hoamoal War, and elements of the subsequent war between Gowa and the VOC is described in "War-Making, Raiding, Slave-Hunting and Piracy in the Malukan Archipelago" by M. Lobato in Piracy and surreptitious activities in the Malay Archipelago and adjacent seas, 1600-1840. The encyclopedia The Dutch Encounter with Asia, 1600-1950 also has a good article beginning in p.136.
23 See especially Sutherland's "Trade, court and company: Makassar in the later seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries," Villier's "Makassar : The Rise and Fall of an East Indonesian Maritime Trading State : 1512-1669," and Boxer's biography of Vieira.

INTRODUCTION
Rock breakers have become an integral part of modern industries, especially in the construction and mining sectors. These powerful machines have revolutionized the way we break and remove rocks, making it quicker, safer, and more efficient. In this article, I will delve into the world of rock breakers, exploring their importance, how they work, the different types available, advantages of using them, safety measures, maintenance and care, technological innovations, and the leading manufacturers and suppliers. By the end, you'll have a comprehensive understanding of rock breakers and their role in shaping modern industries.
Introduction to Rock Breakers
Rock breakers, also known as hydraulic hammers or rock hammers, are heavy-duty machines designed to break large rocks into smaller pieces. They are commonly used in construction, mining, demolition, and quarrying activities. These powerful tools utilize hydraulic pressure to deliver high impact blows to rocks, effectively breaking them apart.
The Importance of Rock Breakers in Construction and Mining
Rock breakers play a vital role in construction and mining industries. In construction, they are used to break rocks during the excavation process, making way for foundations, tunnels, and other structures. Without rock breakers, construction projects would be severely hindered, as manual methods of rock removal are time-consuming and inefficient.
In mining, rock breakers are essential for extracting valuable minerals from the earth. They are used to break down hard rock formations, allowing access to the minerals beneath. Without rock breakers, mining operations would be significantly limited, affecting productivity and profitability.
How Rock Breakers Work
Rock breakers operate on the principle of hydraulic power. They consist of a hydraulic system, a power source, and a breaker tool. The hydraulic system generates high-pressure oil, which is directed to a hydraulic cylinder. The cylinder pushes a piston, which in turn strikes the breaker tool against the rock surface.
The impact from the breaker tool creates cracks and fractures in the rock, eventually breaking it apart. The hydraulic system also controls the speed and frequency of the blows, providing operators with precise control over the breaking process. This allows for efficient rock breaking while minimizing the risk of damage to the surrounding structures.
Types of Rock Breakers
There are several types of rock breakers available, each designed to suit specific applications. The two main types are hydraulic breakers and pneumatic breakers.
Hydraulic breakers are the most commonly used type. They are powered by hydraulic systems and are capable of delivering high impact energy. Hydraulic breakers are versatile and can be attached to various types of machinery, such as excavators, skid-steer loaders, and backhoes.
Pneumatic breakers, on the other hand, utilize compressed air as their power source. They are lighter and more portable than hydraulic breakers, making them suitable for smaller-scale projects. Pneumatic breakers are commonly used in road construction and maintenance, as well as in demolition tasks.
Advantages of Using Rock Breakers
The use of rock breakers offers numerous advantages, making them indispensable in modern industries. Firstly, rock breakers increase efficiency and productivity. They can break rocks at a much faster rate than manual methods, saving valuable time and labor costs. This allows construction and mining projects to be completed more quickly, leading to increased profitability.
Additionally, rock breakers improve safety on worksites. Manual rock breaking can be hazardous, as it exposes workers to the risk of injury from flying debris or falling rocks. By using rock breakers, workers can maintain a safe distance from the rock-breaking process, reducing the likelihood of accidents.
Furthermore, rock breakers are highly versatile. They can be used for various tasks, such as breaking rocks, concrete, and asphalt. This versatility makes them a valuable tool in different industries, where they can be easily attached to different types of machinery, adapting to the specific needs of the project.
Safety Measures When Using Rock Breakers
While rock breakers are powerful tools, they also pose certain risks if not used correctly. It is essential to follow safety measures to ensure the well-being of operators and those working in the vicinity.
Firstly, proper training is crucial. Operators should receive comprehensive training on how to operate and maintain rock breakers safely. They should also be familiar with the specific safety features and precautions of the particular model they are operating.
Secondly, personal protective equipment (PPE) should be worn at all times. This includes safety goggles, ear protection, hard hats, and steel-toed boots. PPE helps protect against potential hazards, such as flying debris and noise-induced hearing loss.
Another important safety measure is to conduct regular inspections of the rock breaker and its components. Any signs of wear or damage should be addressed promptly to prevent equipment failure during operation.
Maintenance and Care for Rock Breakers
To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of rock breakers, regular maintenance and care are essential. This includes cleaning the breaker tool after each use to remove any debris or buildup. It is also crucial to inspect the hydraulic system and other components for leaks, cracks, or other signs of damage.
Regular lubrication of moving parts is necessary to minimize friction and ensure smooth operation. This should be done according to the manufacturer's guidelines and using the recommended lubricants.
Additionally, rock breakers should be stored in a clean and dry environment when not in use. Proper storage helps prevent corrosion and damage to the equipment.
Innovations in Rock Breaker Technology
As technology advances, so do rock breakers. Manufacturers are constantly innovating to improve the efficiency, performance, and safety of these machines.
One notable innovation is the incorporation of intelligent control systems. These systems use sensors and advanced algorithms to optimize the rock-breaking process. They can adjust the impact energy, frequency, and other parameters based on the rock type and conditions, maximizing productivity while minimizing wear and tear.
There have also been advancements in noise reduction technology, making rock breakers quieter and more environmentally friendly. This is particularly important in urban areas where noise pollution is a concern.
Rock Breaker Manufacturers and Suppliers
There are several reputable manufacturers and suppliers of rock breakers worldwide. Some of the leading companies in this industry include Atlas Copco, Caterpillar, Sandvik, Komatsu, and Montabert. These companies offer a wide range of rock breaker models, catering to different needs and budgets.
When choosing a rock breaker, it is essential to consider factors such as the application, rock type, and the compatibility with the machinery it will be attached to. Consulting with experts and reading customer reviews can help in making an informed decision.
The Future of Rock Breakers in Modern Industries
Rock breakers have undeniably revolutionized modern industries such as construction and mining. Their ability to break rocks quickly, efficiently, and safely has become indispensable. With ongoing technological advancements and the continuous commitment of manufacturers, the future of rock breakers looks promising.
As industries strive for increased productivity and sustainability, rock breakers will play an increasingly significant role. From intelligent control systems to noise reduction technologies, these machines will continue to evolve, meeting the ever-changing demands of modern industries. So, whether it's breaking rocks for construction projects or extracting valuable minerals, rock breakers will remain an essential tool, shaping the future of modern industries.

2024.04.20 10:01 Mountain_tui The allure of capitalist though

In global news today, Tesla recalls all 3,878 Cybertrucks over a faulty accelerator pedal, while one of the surviving Boeing whistleblowers says Boeing's safety issues and lack of QC was due to a culture of profit over safety - money above all.
In case you need to ask, the other whistleblower was a former safety/QC manager who died last month from an apparent suicide. He was in the process of giving testimony against Boeing.
Separately it has just been reported that Nestle adds sugar to infant milk powders and cereal in poorer countries. This is on top of them advertising to women in poverty that Nestle milk powder is better than free, natural breast milk - and solidifying its aim as contender for world's biggest corporate asshole.
I think we are at a point where the great American dream has failed. Capitalism only works with oversight - and independent, non-corrupt oversight. When a Govt is paid by the rich, their policies are unlikely to serve the interests of the common person.
I think we are at a point where the great American dream has failed. Capitalism only works with oversight - and independent, non-corrupt oversight. In other words - it's regulation and strict enforcement. When a Govt is paid by the rich, their policies are unlikely to serve the interests of the common person.
In the UK, the Westminster system of Govt is a farce - during PM Question times, leaders of both parties (Labour and the Tories) trade barbs like teenage school boys while people die on the streets, power bills have skyrocketed 40% in some cases, and privatisation of water has led to extravagant water bills.
The Tory's privatisation preferences now means that the UK could potentially take on $31bn in debt for its failed privatisation experiment in 1989.
I recently learned that the Tories have been in power for the last 14 years but in fact they have ruled for most of the UK's modern history. The Atlas Network was actually founded under Margaret Thatcher's rule and she took to it with great stride, eventually rewarding Antony Fisher with a Knighthood a few years before he died. In the US, it took birth with Reagan. Their ethos of neoliberalism, trickle down economics and concentrating power and wealth has found its familiar home with oligarchs and billionaires to this day who use its influence and power to inject thoughts like "socialism is poison" and "protecting the rich is protecting your economy and family."
Meanwhile Rupert Murdoch papers around the world keep telling us the issue is Muslims, brown people, trans people or woke. There are issues in every race, in every people regardless of sex, colour, or ideology. But there are wider trends that suggest values and process matters. Processes like a genuine leaning towards helping the most vulnerable in our society, taking care of our planet and nature, having empathy and compassion, investment in health and education and infrastructure, determinedly addressing root cause issues, and sharing our wealth and joys.
During Covid the wealth of the 10 richest men doubled, and the divide between rich and poor increased further. The extreme-poverty rate in the most hard-pressed countries was more than eight times the average in the rest of the world. These countries now account for 90% of all people facing hunger or malnutrition, according to a study by the World Bank.
There is nothing wrong with capitalism in its positives - competition, creativity, invigoration, innovation and fair market, but our world has proven to us that without the rigorous rules, regulations, and requirements to battle bad faith actors and greed, that model can be seriously corrupted.
And the result of that is not only in car accidents, plane deaths, and poverty but also a systemic degradation of life - in pitting human against human, life against life, rich against poor, brown against white, culture against culture - all the while missing the need to step out and stamp out from the corrosive influence of manipulation from those who would have it all - over the liberties and freedoms of those who are just making their way through life. And to find meaning in it all.
The fact is this world has enough wealth - it has natural resources and the hallmarks of prosperity. Attuning to the possibilities is what we have at stake.

2024.04.20 09:59 Vast-Passenger1126 [Discussion] Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey Prologue - Chapter 7

Welcome Earthers, Martians and Belters to our first discussion of Leviathan Wakes! The book certainly started off with a bang (quite literally!) and there's already so much going on.
You can find the schedule here and marginalia here. Below are some chapter summaries in case you need to jog your memory and discussion questions are in the comments.
Prologue: Julie - We open with Julie Mao who’s been stuffed in a storage locker after her ship, The Scopuli, was taken. Julie doesn’t know who has taken her or why. After 4 days, she considers making noise to get the kidnappers’ attention, but hears her ship’s mechanic get tossed out the airlock so decides to stay quiet. After 6 days, the ship has gone silent. On day 8, Julie breaks her way out of the locker and finds the ship completely empty. She makes her way to the engineering room which has been locked from the inside. When she finally breaks in she sees the reactor core covered in human flesh and Captain Darren’s head emerges, asking for help.
Chapter One: Holden - We meet the crew of the Canterbury, a former colony transport ship which now works to transport glaciers from Saturn’s rings to the Belt. The crew includes:
They’ve picked up an emergency signal from another ship which has wound up next to an asteroid. The Canterbury is the only other ship nearby and while solar system law says they should go help, the ship is full of ice so they’re not super excited at the prospect of the detour. They agree to stop but McDowell makes Holden promise not to go out of his way or try to be a hero. We learn that the emergency signal is coming from Scopuli, the ship with the kidnapped crew from the prologue.
Chapter Two: Miller - We cut to Detectives Miller and Havelock who are in Ceres, the port city of the Belt and the outer planets which has 6 million residents. They are interviewing a girl about a man named Bomie Chatterjee, a money collector for an organized crime group called the Golden Bough Society, who has disappeared. Miller and the girl speak in an outerworld dialect that Havelock, an Earthman, can’t understand. Miller is intrigued that the Golden Bough society hasn’t sought any revenge for the disappearance of one of their men, which seems to echo the trend of other criminal societies who are distracted and letting issues slide.
Their Captain, Shaddid, calls Miller up to her office. She worries that this is linked to the Outer Planets Alliance (OPA) a mix of social movement and terrorist organisation. Miller reassures her it’s not, but is still worried that crime in general is down. Captain Shaddid has a new contract for Miller to track down Julie Mao, the daughter of a wealthy businessman. Julie went off to college and got involved with an OPA Front group called the Far Horizons Foundation. Originally the family didn’t care, but they now want to find her for some mysterious reason so have hired Miller to kidnap her. Miller agrees to the job (not that he had much choice) but goes home still thinking mostly about the organised crime families and imagining the Julie job as an unimportant side task.
Chapter Three: Holden – Holden, Naomi, Amos, Shed and pilot Alex Kamal head out in the Knight, the Canterbury shuttlecraft, to check the Scopuli. Everything seems off, but Holden fights his rising panic and decides to enter the ship anyways. After more and more ignored warning signs, Holden finds what he at first thinks is a bomb, but is actually a battery powered transmitter. Just as Holden realizes this may be giving off a signal to whoever planted it and decides it’s time to head out, McDowell radios in that there’s a problem.
Chapter Four: Miller – Miller receives a phone call from Hasini, the assistant manager of a port bar called The Blue Frog. Havelock is there, getting drunk and likely looking to fight some inner planet folk. Miller goes down to get him and they discuss how Havelock feels like he’ll always be an outsider because he’s from the inner planets. They head to a cop bar together and discuss Miller’s assignment to kidnap Julie Mao. Suddenly, all the police in the bar get a broadcast from Captain Shaddid. She has a message from James Holden…
Chapter Five: Holden – As Holden and crew on the Knight head back to the Canterbury, Captain McDowell tells him that Becca has spotted a warm spot near the ship. It turns out to be another ship that was using stealth materials and they immediately fire torpedoes at the Canterbury. The crew scramble to try and figure out what to do. It’s inevitable that the Canterbury will get hit, so McDowell asks Holden to turn around, hide behind the asteroid and call for help instead of trying to rescue them. The torpedoes strike and Holden and Alex are shocked to see that they are actually nukes - the Canterbury and all remaining crew are completely vaporized! In a rage, Holden (who has now been upgraded to Captain) sends a message to the enemy ship and wants to follow them, but Naomi convinces him that the smart move is to retreat to safety and call for help. Alex tells Holden he’s never seen any pirates with such advanced technology and when they look closer at the mystery transmitter they find it belongs to the Martian Congressional Republic Navy (MCRN). Dun dun dunnnn!
Chapter Six: Miller – Miller explains to Havelock that the Canterbury incident is major for the Belters. They do not respond well to having their resources messed with, so Holden’s message is essentially a declaration of war against Mars. The police force is split into riot squads, except for Havelock who has to stay back because he’s an Earther. As Miller and the others open the lockers, they find that all their riot gear is gone! Shaddid tells them to use the SWAT gear instead which implies the police will be acting as snipers instead.
Out in the station, Miller and his team encounter a riot where an OPA man has just killed a woman. Miller confronts the man and one of the snipers shoots out his kneecaps. Miller tells the crowd that Belter infighting is exactly what the Martians wants and the mob breaks apart.
Chapter Seven: Holden – The crew discuss where to take the Knight and Holden says he wants to wait until their employer, P and K, call them back with a decision. He retreats to his cabin and contemplates what type of person would obey commands to blow up a civilian ship. Three hours later, they receive a call from P and K’s lawyer, Wallace Fitz. He is not happy about the accusation made against Mars and says that the MCRN is sending a ship out to meet the Knight and Holden is expected to cooperate with them. Understandably, the crew think this is a horrible idea and discuss what to do. They decide to broadcast a message saying they are fully cooperating and therefore should not expect to be held prisoner or harmed in any way to ensure other planets/Belters know what is happening. As they head out to meet the MCRN, Alex spots six Belter ships that will intercept the Knight two days before they arrive at their destination.

BitStarz Casino

BitStarz Casino
If there’s one online casino that’s consistently rated highly by both players and experts, it’s BitStarz.
In our expert BitStarz Casino review, we will go into more detail about why this gambling site has such a good reputation. So, keep on reading our casino review for the full lowdown on their payments, games, support and more. Don’t forget to check BitStarz player reviews and comments to see what your fellow punters say about BitStarz online casino.
What we like
  • No fees and instant payments for e-wallet and crypto players
  • Dedicated crypto casino game selection
  • Instant response on live chat and quick to resolve complaints
What we don’t like
  • Slower transaction times for Visa card and bank transfer payments
Payment Information and Options
Wherever you’re spinning from, once you’ve created a BitStarz Casino login, you should be able to deposit, withdraw and bet in your local currency, using a payment option that suits you. As a BitStarz Casino real money player, you’re really unlikely to have to compromise when it comes to payments. However, this casino does seem to favour e-wallet and crypto players.
BitStarz crypto casino is definitely where it’s at. If you buy, bet and breathe cryptocurrency, you’ll love playing here. You’ll have loads of choice, zero fees and virtually no delays when processing payments.
You won't be charged any fees for depositing and withdrawing funds, regardless of your payment method.
Before your first withdrawal at BitStarz, you’ll need to complete their verification process as part of their licensing requirements. Crypto and e-wallet withdrawals are processed almost instantly, but it will take you considerably longer to receive your winnings if you withdraw via debit card or bank transfer. Players often make the mistake of not calculating the time for the casino to approve the withdrawal, so keep that in mind when looking at the speeds listed above.
If you want to sack your Visa card for the additional benefits that come with paying in crypto, BitStarz even has some recommendations for where you can buy Bitcoin to get started.
Customer Support at BitStarz Casino
This is another area where BitStarz shines. Even some of their most loyal customers will admit this hasn’t always been the case, but lately, they’ve stepped up their customer support game, which is available 24/7.
The easiest way to reach out is through the Bitstarz live chat. You’ll start with a chatbot that can help you with simple queries; still, a bot can only get you so far. The good news is that, as soon as you type in a question, you’ll be transferred to a real person.
All of the site’s customer support representatives have at least 3 years of casino experience, so you won’t find yourself speaking to a newbie who doesn’t know how to help you.
We got an instant response when we tested their live chat, and the ‘Support Hero’ was super helpful. The vast majority of players share this positive experience. You only need to see BitStarz Casino’s stellar complaint history at AskGamblers to know this is the case. After they help you out, you can even tip your support agent, which we’re sure you’ll be more likely to do if they give you a casino bonus!
Games at BitStarz Casino
BitStarz Casino is home to a fantastic, high-quality portfolio of casino games, thanks to the volume of software providers and the diversity of game choices available. Regardless of your experience and budget, there's something for everyone, from online slots to the BitStarz live casino.
Alongside the usual selection, a section dedicated to Bitcoin games also shows you the titles you can actually play in crypto. Otherwise, you can deposit in crypto, but you’ll have to play in a fiat currency.
You regulars out there have probably already bookmarked your favourite games but, if you want to look for that game you’ve just discovered in a forum, you can use the responsive search.
If you’re just getting into gaming and don’t know where to start, you can easily browse by game type or provider, although it only lets you choose one provider at a time. Alternatively, and especially if you’re indecisive, you can use their random game generator. Supposedly, this picks a game based on your preferences, but we can’t attest to it not just being a gimmick.
BitStarz Casino’s Commitment to Responsible Gambling
BitStarz Casino is licensed and regulated in Curaçao so you might not find as broad a set of responsible gambling tools that you would at a UKGC-licensed casino, for example. Players have remarked that their deposit pop-up may sometimes appear even when you still have funds in your account. We didn’t experience this personally, though.
However, that’s not to say that they don’t offer anything. On the contrary, as you can see from the list above, they do take this side of things very seriously.
If you feel you are showing signs of problem gambling, BitStarz will allow you to self-exclude yourself from their casino. You can activate this or find out more information by contacting their support team.
They also assist you if you have a friend or family member who is also experiencing problem gambling. Further support options can be found in their ‘Play Safe’ section.

Wazamba Casino

JAK CUTTHROAT High-Effort Guide: In-Depth Stats & Attachments with 7 Class Setups!

JAK Cutthroat Stock (Aftermarket Part) - In-Depth Stats & Attachments with 7 Class Setups

The JAK Cutthroat is an Aftermarket Part newly released in Week 3 of Season 3! This guide will review the way it works, its stats, which guns it works on, and seven excellent, highly-tested builds that make great use of it! The JAK Cutthroat Stock can be equipped to any weapon on the MCW, MTZ, M4, and AMR9 weapon platforms, which is essentially any weapon that uses those weapons as a frame, so to speak. It provides the absolute best possible improvement to Strafe Speed out of a singular attachment, on top of a nominal bonus to Movement Speed. However, it also significantly increases your recoil: a uniform 10% to Gun Kick, Vertical Recoil, and Horizontal Recoil. Many attachments cover the Vertical and Horizontal, but countering the Gun Kick without using a bulky compensator rests on a good Underbarrel selection. Let’s take a look at the stats:
JAK Cutthroat stats on a base MTZ-556.
In order to take advantage of that massive boost to Strafe Speed - allowing you to dodge opponent’s shots in real time - we’ll need to gear our weapons carefully to make sure we properly balance the drawbacks and craft beautifully performing weapons that are better than ever before! The full list of weapons the JAK Cutthroat can be equipped to are:
  • AR: MCW
  • AR: MTZ-556
  • AR: M4
  • AR: M16
  • SMG: AMR9
  • SMG: FSS Hurricane
  • LMG: 556 Icarus
  • Shotgun: Riveter
  • Battle Rifle: MTZ-762
  • Battle Rifle: FTAC Recon
  • Marksman Rifle: MTZ Interceptor
I’ll be sharing a finely tuned build for each weapon except the MCW (glitched; cannot equip), Riveter (incompatible with playstyle), MTZ-762 (too much recoil), and FTAC Recon (too much recoil). I tested each weapon extensively to find any way to make this attachment work and found great success with the majority! Here is a stress-tested, expertly crafted loadout for each weapon I recommend using the JAK Cutthroat on.
MTZ-556 JAK Cutthroat recommended build.

MTZ-556

  • Muzzle: Echoline GS-X
  • Barrel: MTZ PARA Long Barrel
  • Stock: JAK Cutthroat
  • Rear Grip: Bruen TR-24 Assault Grip
  • Underbarrel: Bruen Heavy Support Grip
The MTZ-556 has enjoyed a select few buffs recently, and the addition of the JAK Cutthroat is no exception. The MTZ has many ways to increase its mobility, but gaining so much from the Stock allows us to focus on reducing recoil and improving weapon performance. Reaching an incredible 3.7m/s Strafe Speed with reduced recoil and a massive +4 Firing Aim Stability, this build performs like a dream. It has ultra-consistent, predictable recoil – slowly veering left, so it requires you to build the muscle memory to begin compensating for that horizontal recoil by lightly pulling down and to the right. If you can manage that, you can take full advantage of an ultra-fast, super-smooth, highly capable weapon.
Compared to my previous Mathematically Optimized™ build, this version is nearly numerically the same – Damage Range, ADS, S2F, and Strafe are all the same, but with 3 extra points of Firing Aim Stability. Don’t be afraid of reducing your Damage Range with the Echoline GS-X since the MTZ carries the same TTK into its second Damage Range (as long as you hit 3 of 5 shots to the chest), up to 36 meters. Always remember that the MTZ-556 is more of an SMG than it is an AR, so treat your engagements as such.
M4 JAK Cutthroat recommended build.

M4

  • Muzzle: Zehmn35 Compensated Flash Hider
  • Laser: FSS OLE-V Laser
  • Stock: JAK Cutthroat
  • Rear Grip: Sakin ZX Grip
  • Underbarrel: Bruen Heavy Support Grip
The classic M4 always feels good to use in Call of Duty, so if you’ve missed it, the M4 has come back home. Featuring nearly perfectly-straight recoil along a steady climb, this build of the M4 is essentially as accurate as you are – if you can control it, you will be railing people without missing a bullet. Modern Warfare 2 guns still suffer from significant visual recoil, so the Zehmn35 combines with the Bruen Heavy Support Grip combine to strongly stabilize your sights, and the rest is pure fast handling. MW2 guns tend to feel bad to use in MW3, but not this one.
M16 JAK Cutthroat recommended build.

M16

  • Muzzle: Echoline GS-X
  • Optic: JAK Glassless Optic
  • Stock: JAK Cutthroat
  • Rear Grip: Sakin ZX Grip
  • Underbarrel: Bruen Heavy Support Grip
The M16’s recent buffs have crowned it as the best burst rifle in MW3, and it’s anticipated to potentially get even better with its incoming Conversion Kit. Allow this build to serve as a warmup before that Conversion Kit lands. The bursts carry a significant kick, and no matter how much recoil control you stack on the M16 (even with the JAK BFB), it simply has a built-in amount of Gun Kick that no combination of attachments can solve.
With that in mind, I’ve crafted a build that strongly reduces that kick and reigns in consistency over distance well. The JAK Glassless Optic appears to make a large difference on the M16 and is one of the best ways to reduce the recoil and improve your firing experience. It will be challenging to shoot right beyond 30 meters, so proactively compensate for recoil over midrange, but this build is essentially as consistent and accurate as possible while retaining decent handling.
AMR9 JAK Cutthroat recommended build.

AMR9

  • Muzzle: ECS Requieter Suppressor
  • Optic: JAK Glassless Optic
  • Stock: JAK Cutthroat
  • Rear Grip: Sakin ZX Grip
  • Underbarrel: Bruen Heavy Support Grip
The AMR9 is among the slowest of the SMGs and has always struggled with achieving decent handling numbers against good recoil, and the JAK Cutthroat really lends its strength to the AMR. This build is beautifully consistent – the only caveat being the strong, pronounced first-shot kick. If you can contain that initial muzzle rise, you should be impressed just how straight this SMG can shoot. 3.8m/s Strafe speed is absolutely outstanding for the AMR and is basically unheard of before this attachment, so the AMR serves as a shining example of just how powerful the JAK Cutthroat is.
I also have a previously Mathematically Optimized™ loadout for this weapon to compare this version against.
FSS Hurricane JAK Cutthroat recommended build.

FSS Hurricane

  • Muzzle: ECS Requieter Suppressor
  • Optic: JAK Glassless Optic
  • Stock: JAK Cutthroat
  • Rear Grip: Sakin ZX Grip
  • Underbarrel: Bruen Heavy Support Grip
In desperate need of a buff, the FSS Hurricane suffers from a horribly uncompetitive TTK (344ms) with no real distinguishing factor that sets it ahead of other SMGs. It does have a built-in 50-round magazine and can perform well at midrange where other SMG TTKs would falter, but ultimately falls behind the performance curve. Regardless, if you’re looking to try it, you can expect easily-controllable recoil with high consistency, but namely an excellent 3.8m/s Strafe Speed.
556 Icarus JAK Cutthroat recommended build.

556 Icarus

  • Muzzle: Zehmn35 Compensated Flash Hider
  • Optic: JAK Glassless Optic
  • Stock: JAK Cutthroat
  • Rear Grip: Sakin ZX Grip
  • Underbarrel: Bruen Tactical Vertical Grip
A slower version of the M4, but with all the same consistency and accuracy – just with a giant magazine. At around the 5th/6th shot, the recoil will suddenly swerve right, so be dial in the muscle memory to begin compensating left at about the fifth bullet and you’ll be able to laser people across the map. The rogue Bruen Tactical Vertical Grip makes a rare appearance to fix guns that only need Gun Kick or Firing Aim Stability (but neither Vertical nor Horizontal recoil) and is a crucial part of achieving that buttery-smooth, easily controllable firing profile. If you’ve been afraid of using Modern Warfare 2 guns in MW3 (and rightfully so), the 556 Icarus is another great one to try.
MTZ Interceptor JAK Cutthroat recommended build.

MTZ Interceptor

  • Muzzle: Shadowstrike Suppressor L
  • Optic: Corio Eagleseye 2.5x
  • Stock: JAK Cutthroat
  • Rear Grip: Bruen TR-24 Assault Grip
  • Underbarrel: SL Skeletal Vertical Grip
I would not expect a Marksman Rifle to ever properly use attachments for fast handling, but this build of the MTZ Interceptor nails it. The JAK Cutthroat unlocks a new, refreshing, and rewarding playstyle for the Interceptor: one that utilizes the fast strafe speed to quickly peek to and from cover in attempts to land a one-shot kill to the head (lethal up to 38 meters). Similar to the M16, the MTZ Interceptor has an inherent amount of kick per shot that no blend of attachments will ever fix, so this build is designed to accentuate that mobile, opportunistic playstyle.
Play fast, hit your shots, and play smart: make good use of that strafe speed to duck in and out of cover, taking potshots as it is safe to do so. It gives an immense feeling of satisfaction to only be visible to your enemies for a split-second, blindsiding them before they get instantly one-shotted and had practically zero chance to outgun you. If you aren’t able to land a headshot, make sure to center on the chest and pull down hard – you have an infinite two-shot, 280ms TTK as long as you hit both shots above the legs.
I also have a previously Mathematically Optimized™ loadout for this weapon to compare this version against.

Fastest way to unlock the JAK Cutthroat

This week’s challenges are fairly easy between Multiplayer and Zombies, but Zombies is always the easiest by default. All you need is a Recommended SMG and Napalm Burst, targeting the following 5 challenges:
  • 5 Rapid Kills 20 Times with a Recommended SMG
  • 200 Fire Damage Kills with a Recommended SMG
  • 100 Kills in a Single Deployment 5 times with a Recommended Weapon (aka get 500 kills)
  • 10 Mangler Kills with a Recommended Weapon (Farm exfils)
  • 50 Hellhound Kills with a Recommended Weapon (Farm an Outlast contract)

2024.04.20 02:33 gistya Proposal to vastly enhance variety of planet terrain and colors without a reset, and to allow portaling between galaxies

This is an update of a prior post. Now this proposal does NOT require a galaxy reset. The post is organized into sections for ease of reference.

Proposed Action

  1. Add new galaxies 257-4096 with all new planet terrain and vastly improved planet variety. (Or: add new star systems with a new star type in existing galaxies; see Alternatives below.)
  2. Update portals to allow setting the destination galaxy, so people can easily visit shared locations anywhere.
  3. Enhance the degree of color variety and music found in each galaxy beyond Euclid to feel more unique (each with its own combination of color pallette and weird star classes—think the different feel of various worlds in the original Super Mario Bros.).
  4. Add a way to migrate a base to a new galaxy or planet. Each of your bases (or part of a base) can be saved as a "deployable base" that can be placed anywhere on a planet. Placed items can now be selected and grouped, then moved around in 3D coords after placement (like in any 3D graphics program with subtle nudging for precise control) or saved as a deployable build.
  5. Existing discoveries and bases are all preserved. This is not a reset!

Facts of Planet Variety

  1. An original promise of NMS was a that you can find truly unique planets.
  2. Prior versions like Atlas Rises had much greater variety in planetary terrain and color schemes, but the 1.5 NEXT update vastly dumbed down the terrain and colors to a limited set of templates. Since then, players have been asking for more variery to be put back in the game.
  3. 3.0 Origins update attempted to address this while avoiding a universe reset by adding additional planets to most star systems, where the newly-added planets would be "huge mountains" (AKA "prime") versions of the existing 10 terrain templates. A Waterworld Prime template was also added.
  4. In prior versions like Atlas Rises, the player could select a color filter in Options menu to apply at all times, but in NEXT and subsequent updates, each planet may have one of several preset color filter modes (such as Isolation, where everything looks black-and-white except one particular color like red or green) which gets applied on top of the rendered view (except while in photo mode with a non-default filter selected, in which case the player's photo mode filter gets applied instead). The set of filters has been expanded over time but is still pretty limited.
  5. After NEXT, additional variety has also been added in the form of new sub-biomes that change up the types of flora, minerals, enemies, and resources available on certain planets. The new sub biomes included Infested versions of each biome; Swamp (sub-biome of Lush); Volcanic (sub-biome of Scorched); Coral (sub-biome of Desert where the surface flora/minerals are those normally seen underwater); Lushroom (Lush but with giant mushrooms); and several others.
  6. The color pallette of planets has been expanded since NEXT, however there is still a fairly curated/limited range of colors that each specific biome may be found in.
  7. Existing terrain template files have many of the more randomizable aspects dialed in to preset values for many params or disabled entirely. While some of this could be for performance reasons, modding has shown that much more variety can be supported even within the existing templates.
  8. Despite all the enhancements, the limit of terrain variety in the existing 21 templates cannot be changed without either a full universe reset OR adding new planets/stars/galaxies that can use additional new terrain templates or procedurally generated templates, etc.

Facts of Player Bases

  1. 1.5 NEXT is the most recent update that reset the universe and resulted in all existing player bases vanishing.
  2. Certain subsequent updates have included changes to existing base-building code, such as changes to how base power is calculated and changes to how certain base parts snap together, have broken existing player bases in various ways. Many older player bases are now missing doors or connections between landing pads and hallways, and/or are without base power. Especially in long-term civilizations like Galactic Hub, sometimes it feels like one finds more "dead bases" than working ones.
  3. Supporting the existence of older bases has nonetheless required HG to keep old base-building parts in the game despite having added new, better parts meant to replace them.
  4. The only in-game mechanism to permanently bookmark or save a discovery (cool planet location, cool creature spot, etc.) is the recently-added Custom Records tab, which lets you save a planet/flora/fauna/mineral into one of 12 named slots, such that it won't eventually get auto-erased like everything else in the discoveries tab eventually will to make room for new discoveries. As a result, many players use bases mostly just as "cool spot bookmarks."

Facts about Portals and Universal Addresses

  1. Portal addresses are 12 hexadecimal digits (base-16) with in five components: planet index P, star system index SSS, and XYZ galactic grid position coordinates ZZXXXYYY (which determines which region in the galactic plane the star system is in). The format is: P-SSS-ZZ-XXX-YYY.
  2. Star system index allows for up to 4096 systems per region (three hexadecimal digits means a number from zero to 163 can be represented). But currently, regions never have more than about 500. As a result, many more star systems could be added without requiring a change to the portal address format.
  3. Internally and in certain rare in-game NPC interactions (like Hyperspace Beacons that are a random space encounter), NMS uses a format called Universal Address, which is a 16-digit hexadecimal number that includes the portal address but also includes the galaxy index GG and two unusued zero digits. The format is: 00-P-SSS-GG-ZZ-XXX-YYY.

Rationale for Proposal

Based on the above facts, the rationale for the reset is as follows.
  1. The unused digits of the Universal Address format could be used to internally represent locations in galaxies beyond the existing 255. Portals could be updated to allow locking in a destination galaxy with a three-digit galaxy code GGG before entering the galaxy-local portal address in the current format. Photo mode could show the galacitc coords alongside the portal address.
  2. Implementing the redeploy, group, and reposition features could support players saving groups of base items to a redeployable/copiable/tradeable item, allowing for moving of bases from one planet to another, combination of multiple builds into one base or vice-versa, making multiple copies of circuit logic, trading base designs to other players, etc. It would bring NMS more on par with Little Big Planet and Second Life, which have similar abilities.
  3. The limited set of color filters and terrain templates results in too much repetition currently. This proposal could enhance existing planets' colors in existing galaxies while also adding totally new galaxies with much more variety of planet terrain and colors.
  4. New galaxies could allow many new terrain templates to be added. Rather than just being "huge mountain planets" or not, new galaxies' planets could have a smooth variety between very flat or very high. As well, variety of rock and resource formations could be greatly expanded using the latent superformula shape generation system for those noise layers. Having some templates with more perturbation enabled could also allow more extreme terrain insanity like pre-NEXT.
  5. Exploring a planet is more fun when some areas of it look different than other areas. In prior versions, such as Atlas Rises, one could find certain areas of a planet looking quite different from other areas. It seemed to be due to some differences in how the terrain system applied variation across different patches of the surface. (I'm unsure if this was more due to the templates used or the underlying code that generates terrain.)
  6. Making portals allow inter-galaxy travel would remove the barrier that currently disincentivises many players from exploring other galaxies besides Euclid. Namely, people want to be able to share coords that can be reached without jumping through lots of hoops.
  7. Color filters are a bad way to add variety since they often ruin immersion by either not rendering on close-up areas or applying even to the HUD. They also hide the unique colors of local fauna, terrain, and skies, and do not apply when color filters are changed in photo mode, revealing the actual colors to be the same drab ones as always.
  8. It would be much more awesome to have the actual color palette of the planets, flora, and fauna more randomized and less curated, and restore the color filters back to Options menu so players can play fully filtered. Or have different galaxies with different color themes, etc.
  9. Color system could be enhanced for Euclid without needing to do a reset.
  10. Most planets you land on don't have a color filter, resulting in most planets of a given biome always having a similar look. In pre-NEXT versions of NMS this was not as much the case, as for example a lifeless planet was not always a drab gray rock, but was still a bit of an issue for certain biomes.

Alternatives Also Considered

  1. A full reset. This is a no-go for too many folks as it would wipe existing bases.
  2. Keep existing planets as-is, while adding new planets to each star system in Euclid using the new terrain system, as they did when they added the additional "big mountain" terrain templates. (I don't prefer this option because it does not really fix how repetitive it feels to explore lots of planets, since most planets you'd land on would still be the old kind.)
  3. If adding new galaxies 257 through 4095 is not feasible for technical reasons, perhaps do a reset only of the least populated galaxies, such as galaxies 11 through 255, perhaps omitting certain ones if a significant active civ is there (like 42). This could mitigate the number of people who would be impacted, especially since any reset bases would be preserved via the redeployable base feature.
  4. A further alternative would be to add hundreds of new stars to each region of the existing galaxies, where the new stars have a new star class and their planets use the new terrain system. The new star class would mean these can easily distinguished from existing stars on the galaxy map for explorers who want to focus on the new enhanced planets. (I don't prefer this option since it would likely mean the existing stars all get moved around due to the pseudorandom algorithm that determines where stars appear within a region in the galaxy map, and it feels like it would lead to a less consistent-feeling overall game experience. However it is technically feasible, and would be the only viable non-reset option if adding new galaxies beyond 255 turned out to be technically infeasible).

2024.04.20 01:35 cmm3001 Concerns on PET scan?

The patient 73F has no symptoms. Sister passed from pancreatic cancer last year and doctor did an MRI to be proactive and found a cyst on the pancreas and a large ovarian cyst. Ovaries and fallopian tubes removed along with some “suspicious” lymph nodes which were benign. Another scan this year showed the cyst on pancreas had grown along with some enlarged nodes. Endoscopic procedure is scheduled. How concerning are these PET scan results?
FINAL REPORT PET-CT SCAN HISTORY: Pancreatic lesion. Lymphadenopathy. PROCEDURE: Following the IV injection of 18-fluoro-2- deoxyglucose (FDG) and a standard uptake of approximately 60 minutes, a noncontrast CT scan followed by a PET CT were acquired along the length of the body from the middle of the head to the mid thighs. CT attenuation-corrected axial, sagittal, coronal, and rotational MIP images were acquired. The noncontrast low-dose CT scan was used for anatomic localization and photon attenuation correction of the PET scan and is not for standard alone diagnosis. Blood glucose level (mg/the L): 94 FDG dose (mCi): 12.3 Correlative studies: MRI from 3/20/2024 FINDINGS: Head/Neck: There is no abnormal uptake within the head or neck. Chest: No abnormal uptake within the lungs or mediastinum. There is no focal airspace disease.
Abdomen/Pelvis: The liver demonstrates background activity with SUV range of 3.4-4.1. There are no tracer avid lesions seen within the liver. Area of photopenia within the left liver lobe corresponds to a cyst. The cystic lesion of the pancreas as seen on MRI is not well seen on the images obtained for attenuation correction. There is no abnormal uptake demonstrated in the region of the pancreatic head or uncinate process. However, there is hazy infiltration within the mesentery and there is increased uptake corresponding to an enlarged mesenteric node measuring 3.6 x 2.3 cm in size and with SUV of 12.9. There are other abnormal areas of uptake corresponding to small retroperitoneal nodes/nodules less than 1 cm in size including interaortocaval region with SUV 7.0, retrocaval with SUV 5.3, and right retrocural with SUV of 7.0. There is increased uptake within a nodule within the left periaortic retroperitoneum with SUV of 6.0. There is also uptake corresponding to the areas of hazy infiltration within the mesentery with SUV of up to 6.6. There is no abnormal uptake within the pelvis or inguinal regions. Normal physiologic activity within the renal collecting systems and urinary bladder. Skeletal: No abnormal skeletal uptake. IMPRESSION: The enlarging cystic lesion as reported on MRI within the pancreas is not well seen on the CT images obtained for attenuation correction. No abnormal areas of increased uptake are demonstrated within the pancreatic head or uncinate process. Lack of increased uptake does not exclude malignancy and the MR findings as previously reported are concerning for enlarging IPMN. There is increased uptake corresponding to an abnormally enlarged lymph node (3.6 x 2.3 cm) within the mesentery as well as increased uptake within nonenlarged lymph nodes within the retroperitoneum including left para-aortic, interaortocaval, retrocaval, and retrocrural. There is also increased uptake corresponding to abnormal hazy infiltration within the mesentery. The findings are concerning for lymphoproliferative disorder such as lymphoma. Left liver lobe cyst.

2024.04.19 23:09 Publius1687 Atlas Crucified: Why The Combined Achievements of America's Founders and Modern Defenders of Liberty Were Not Enough to Save Our Country from The Slow Cancer of Socialism

  1. The Constitution should have been amended after 1812, requiring that all congressional bills required a two thirds vote to pass
  2. The original electoral system should not have been modified
  3. Any socialists or others actively working to subvert economic freedom should have been hung for treason
  4. All voters should be required to provide proof of gun ownership
  5. All rioters or others actively working to subvert our system of laws should be hung for treason

Regarding the two thirds vote: Tumors require what's called angiogenesis to supply blood in order to take root in the human body. Similarly unpatriotic weasels require the ability to pass laws with relative ease in order to subvert liberty.

Regarding the electoral system: Worried about election security? A lot easier to confirm national election outcomes when only 435 representatives can vote.

Regarding economic freedom: Bring back the death penalty for armed robbery and watch crime plummet. Taxation to fund socialism is the most rampant form of armed robbery in America.

Regarding voters: First of all you still have to vote for the 435 representatives, among other things. Secondly, why is crime rampant? Because criminals are enabled (practically encouraged) when they know men are not willing and able to defend themselves and their family.

Regarding justice: Hence the name of the post, Atlas Crucified. By allowing the gradual assault on its founding principles, we have let our politics and culture turn against the very men who we count on to uphold those principles. But there have always been great challenges such as this. It is incumbent on us as individuals to compete in the hierarchy of competence so that the best among us can turn the tide. Shrug the cross, pick up your sword.

2024.04.19 22:01 Ben_Elohim_2020 Federation Military Roles & Structure

I felt inspired the other day and decided to take a shot at providing a bit of formalized structure to the Federation Military (being the mess that it is). The following is my attempt to explore the different branches and roles within the Federation’s Armed Forces. I certainly can't make any claims about canonicity, and I'm sure lots of people will have different ideas about what exactly every sub-faction does, what they should be named, and different ranks and positions I’ve neglected to mention. Some of which may even be better than mine (Haha), but this is my own take on things and what I use in my own writing. Hopefully some of you will be able to take something away from all this or at least have fun reading.
The Exterminators:
The Exterminators make up a unique role in the Federation military, acting as both ground-based military akin to the Army Infantry or Marines, as Police who serve and protect the general public, and as a political faction akin to Commissars, Inquisitors, or Secret Police which ensure the compliance of their charges with the general dogma of the Federation at large and suppression of dissident “Predator Diseased” individuals. Exterminators may be further classified by experience, authority, and specialization. Much like a Roman legionary there is no distinction between “Military” and “Police'' but simply a difference in the activities undertaken by an individual given their current posting. A “Police'' Exterminator could at any moment become a “Military” Exterminator if pressed to serve about an Extermination Fleet or when serving as the front line defense against an Arxur raid.
Junior Extermination Officer:
Junior Exterminators are the youngest and least experienced of the Exterminators, often including children due to the Federations policy of fostering and indoctrinating child soldiers. Junior Exterminators are any Exterminators who are under the age of legal adulthood for their species or who have less than two years of experience. In the case of particularly young children it is entirely possible for Junior Exterminators to immediately become Veteran Exterminators after reaching legal adulthood due to their extensive experience “leap-frogging” the intermediate rank.
Extermination Officer:
The most common level of Exterminator, the basic Extermination Officer is an individual who has reached the age of legal adulthood for their species and who has displayed aptitude for their position through either two years of service as a junior officer or through field promotions granted for notable acts of valor.
Veteran Extermination Officer:
The highest level of non-commissioned Extermination Officer, typically granted after ten years of active service in the Federation though Exterminators deployed to the front lines of colony worlds or serving aboard Extermination Fleets on campaign against the Arxur can accrue experience much faster.
Garrison Exterminator:
A Garrison Exterminator is any Exterminator assigned to a “Pacified World'', one in which the threat of native Predators is greatly diminished due to extensive and long-lasting settlement. Garrison Exterminators are the most likely to engage in general “police actions” among their local communities, screening for predator diseased individuals, burning the rare surviving predator den, utilizing propaganda, and providing disaster relief in the aftermath of Stampedes or natural disasters. The MOST vital role for Garrison Exterminators however is to serve as the front line defense against Arxur raids. In the case of small raids they may be expected to repel the attackers by themselves, though in large scale invasions their priorities shift to minimizing casualties and holding the line until outside reinforcements or Space Force support arrives. Opportunity for career advancement is minimal as a Garrison Officer, though Arxur Invasion will provide opportunity for advancement at the same rate as a Colony or Fleet Exterminator for the duration of the invasion as well as the chance for heroic acts of valor. Typically, however, serving as a Garrison Exterminator is considered to be a relatively safe profession and casualties are rare outside of invasions.
Colony Exterminator:
Colony Exterminators are any Exterminators assigned to an “Unpacified World'', one in which there is an active and ever present threat of dangerous natural predators. For this reason Colony Exterminators are considered to be “actively engaged” at all times and as such advance at twice the rate of Garrison Exterminators to compensate for the added dangers, going from a Junior Officer to a standard Officer in just one year or to a Veteran Officer in only five years. While they maintain all the same duties as a Garrison Officer the small size of the colony and ever present threat of natural predators limit their “Police Activities”. Serving as a Colony Exterminator is considered hazardous and casualties are typically low to moderate but expected.
Fleet Exterminator:
Fleet Exterminators are any Exterminator who serves aboard a Space Corps vessel or orbital station, taking the role of a “Marine” who travels with the ship and is used for on-board security as well as being deployed for ground-based actions as required. Due to the prevalence of space combat and the relative rarity of ground actions most time for Fleet Exterminators is spent waiting and training in transit, though due to the extremely high risks involved during actual engagement with the enemy they advance at the same rate as Colony Exterminators, going from a Junior Officer to a standard Officer in just one year or to a Veteran Officer in only five years. As the Officers most likely to engage face to face with the Arxur they are considered extremely brave and held in high regard with ample opportunity for field promotion and commendation. Casualties can potentially be very high and the risks of being taken as “cattle” cannot be understated.
Extermination Support Specialist:
At all levels and in every environment the need remains for technical support specialists to provide for such matters as logistics, communications, engineering, maintenance, and anything else the Federation may require to keep their forces in fighting shape. Extermination support specialists take on many roles in the Federation military, but can largely be considered any officer whose primary duty does not involve combat. While they may possess some aptitude for field work, specialists are not expected to fight and so advance at half the standard rate for their posting. This means that a Garrison Support Specialist would become a Veteran in twenty years while a Fleet Support Specialist would become a Veteran in ten years. As the most protected Officers in any posting, a Support Specialist is considered to be a safe role, relative to the hazard inherent to the posting itself.
Precision Rapid Engagement & Decontamination (P.R.E.D.):
Commonly referred to as “PRED Teams”, Precision Rapid Engagement & Decontamination Exterminators fill the role of “Special Operations” similar to “SWAT” or “Navy SEALs” taking on the extremely hazardous tasks and arduous training that few in the Federation would willingly take up. Indeed, a “promotion” to the PRED Teams is often seen as a punitive posting where the most borderline cases of Predator-Diseased Officers are placed to serve in the best capacity they are capable of, as merciless, psychotic, killing machines. Volunteering for such a position is practically considered evidence of Predator Disease itself, though some “reformed” penitents of the Space Corps who have proven themselves to be capable (and stable) enough may be able to negotiate a transfer and “retire” to a PRED Team. As for positives, the PRED Teams are granted with the best equipment and training the Federation can provide and advance at double the standard rate. A new hire to the PRED Teams (often taken on plea-deal straight from a PD Facility) posted to a Fleet or Colony can become a veteran officer in just two-and-a-half years of service! In exchange the casualty rate is extremely high due to the nature of the work itself and the possibility of being shot by your commanding officer as a disciplinary measure. PRED Teams often take on extremely dangerous Predator Disease suspects, unusual threats requiring immediate or highly skilled response, and offensive maneuvers against the Arxur that typical Exterminators would be unable or unwilling to attempt. Typically a rare sight for Garrison postings, most major cities still retain at least a small task force for emergencies and areas bordering “un-Pacified” regions of wilderness may have larger departments. With the introduction of Humans to the galactic stage the calls by concerned citizens for expanding the size and scope of PRED Teams continue to grow.
Extermination Commander:
There may be many levels and subdivisions of “Commander”, but generally speaking an Extermination Commander is anyone who has been commissioned by the Federation to lead and administer lower-ranked members of the Exterminators Guild. Anyone of at least full Extermination Officer rank may apply, but preference is typically given to Veterans of the organization. While in combat it is possible to secure a “Field Promotion” to “Acting Commander”, should the ordained Commander become a casualty, and this promotion may prove permanent provided satisfactory performance.
Chief Exterminator:
A Chief Exterminator is an Exterminator who has risen high enough in the ranks of his Guild to command an entire Guild Hall, typically responsible for the protection and oversight of an entire city or region. Competition is fierce and cut-throat for the role of Chief Exterminator and many career-minded Exterminators work their entire lives for the opportunity, seeing it as a relatively comfortable position of great social status and authority that can potentially be used as a springboard to further political positions such as a Magister or Governor.
Prestige Exterminator
Falling outside the typical bounds of the Exterminator hierarchy, Prestige Exterminators are the noble Heroes of the guild who are celebrated for their incredible accomplishments, acts of extreme valor, and service to the Federation similar to a “Medal of Honor” recipient. Prestige Exterminators can come from any experience level, specialty, or posting, but most typically originate from active combat zones engaged with the Arxur. Being awarded a Medal of Prestige immediately places the recipient above the level of even Veteran Officers (though does not confer the benefits of a Command Commission) and most recipients possess enough social standing and connections to quickly advance their career in whatever direction they choose. Typically though, the Federation “Encourages” it’s living legends away from hazardous front line duties (as much as is possible for the type of individual who earns a prestige medal) in order to better preserve them as propaganda icons to boost the overall morale and capability of the Guild as a whole, being dispatched to “problematic” areas in need of reform and promoted to leadership positions where they can inspire future generations.
The Space Corps:
If the Exterminators make up the “Army/Marines” of the Federation then the Space Corps are the “Navy/Air Force” and in the space age where most battles take place among the stars or in orbit that makes these soldiers the tip of the spear in the war against the Arxur. Generally speaking the Space Corps is responsible for waging war among the stars, reconnaissance, discovery of new colony worlds, protecting planets, orbital assets, and shipping lanes from Arxur raiders, and transporting Fleet-based Exterminators along with supplies to hostile landing zones in order to conduct ground operations. Most species maintain their own Fleets of ships and individual Space Corps, but can be called upon to mutually aid one another and respond to ongoing crises and developments in the war against the Arxur as the Federation at large directs.
Space Corps Pilot:
The Standard role for a soldier in the Space Corps is that of a Pilot, capable of engaging the Arxur in small one-man or two-man fighters, as well as larger troop carriers, supply craft, and deep space exploration vessels. Space Corps Pilots often have some degree of personal combat training in order to provide limited support to Exterminators and protect themselves, especially in the cases of hostile landings/extractions or crashes, though as this isn’t their specialty they are generally considered inferior to the Exterminators in this regard. Pilots are expected to be technically proficient to handle the intricate ship systems, physically sturdy enough to handle high G forces, and mentally tough enough to at least attempt to fight back against the Arxur directly. Being a Pilot of the Space Corps is considered to be a highly dangerous position at severe risk of death or capture and career advancement is similar to that of an Exterminator, becoming a Veteran Pilot after ten years in a non-hazardous posting or five years on campaign in an active deployment zone.
Space Corps Ace:
A special honorary designation for experienced Fighter Pilots in the Space Corps, indicating that the individual has managed to kill at least five enemy craft. An extremely impressive feat considering the difficulty most Pilots have in killing even a single Arxur who, despite usually being outnumbered, possess more powerful weapons, thicker shields, and terrify most so badly that they can barely even attempt it. Despite their relatively small size and high attrition rate the Space Corps Penitentiary Fleets maintain the largest number of active Space Corps Aces.
Space Corps Support Specialist:
Just like the Exterminators, there are many everyday tasks required to support an advanced space-faring military and these roles are filled by technical support specialists whose daily labors enable the Space Corps to do their job.
Space Corps Captain:
Space Corps Captains are commissioned Officers who command their own Carrier ships similar to modern aircraft carriers which serve as a central “hub” and allow for the deployment of numerous other small-craft. Captains administer, organize, and lead operations from aboard their vessel commanding Pilots, Specialists, and Fleet-Based Exterminators in accordance with their strategic vision. All Space Corps Captains have some degree of prior experience within the Space Corps, often as Pilots or Specialists, but many began their careers as members of the Exterminators Guild (typically Fleet-based) who then transferred and utilized their extensive prior experience to assist them in their new role.
Space Corps Fleet Captain:
Space Corps Fleet Captains are those illustrious individuals who are granted the privilege and responsibility of commanding an entire Fleet of Carrier ships. These may be organized for a specific goal or campaign such as the Extermination Fleet established under Captain Kalsim to wage the Battle of Earth, or simply hierarchical in nature such as being the Fleet Captain for a permanent group such as the Venlil Space Corps or a Penitentiary Fleet. Similar to Chief Exterminators the position of Fleet Captain is a highly contested one and is highly placed in the public eye. Excellent service will cement one’s career while military failures will sink it.
Space Corps Penitent:
The Space Corps Penitents are those damned individuals pulled from the depths of Predator Disease Facilities and forcibly conscripted into penal units known as “Penitentiary Fleets” with the stated goal of allowing otherwise irredeemable, predatory souls to seek salvation through service to the Federation (and also a great way to make use of an otherwise useless and ever growing prison population). Most individuals conscripted to the ranks of the Penitents are extremely unsuited for the task, possessing varied social, mental, and behavioral challenges exacerbated by prolonged imprisonment and “corrective” torture, but the Penitents have a saying, “Excellence through Attrition” and act accordingly. Members are expected to leverage their innate “predatory minds” to learn quickly and combat the Arxur by “fighting fire with fire” or die trying. Most fall into the later category, and extreme loss of life is commonplace. The Penitents are utterly expendable, given only the minimum in training and outdated or otherwise defective equipment to wage war under circumstances that would otherwise be considered too costly to attempt. Despite the immense loss of life and resources involved, the Penitents are considered to be an extremely efficient and cheap division as almost all resources committed are reclaimed, recycled, or scavenged from elsewhere and the administration runs on a shoestring budget. Admission to the penitents is akin to a death sentence with no hope of appeal, almost unavoidable and delayed only through extreme merit and even more extreme luck. The vast majority fail to survive for the two years of almost constant suicide missions it requires to become a “Veteran” of the Penitentiary Fleet, but those who do emerge as the most hardened and experienced killers in the Federation, accumulating more direct combat experience in two years than most other divisions accrue in their entire careers. Almost all who make it this far suffer from some degree of sadistic psychopathy or a similarly violent personality disorder which enables them to kill with casual impunity. Other members of the Space Corps and Exterminators Guild tend to find them extremely disturbing and take an intense dislike of such tainted and “broken” individuals.
Space Corps Penitentiary Compliance Officer:
Within the Penitentiary Fleets those who survive for more than two years are considered to be exceptionally gifted soldiers who are typically better used as more than mere “sacrificial pawns” in suicide squads and, provided suitable “penance” has taken place and the individual is willing to reign in their predatory nature (at least enough to obey orders), they may find themselves promoted to the role of a Compliance Officer. As a Compliance Officer the Penitent serves as both prisoner and jailor, taking on a “middle management” position to induct and command new Penitents, ensuring that they understand their new role in life and the punishments that await them should they displease their new masters. The life of a Compliance Officer is still fraught with danger, but with the added benefit of being able to “lead from the rear”, placing their underlings between themselves and whatever threat they may face. The odds of survival as a Compliance Officer are much higher than that of an ordinary Penitent, provided they manage to avoid being fragged by their own men, though most Compliance Officers avoid this by employing a “shoot first” mentality intended to keep possible rebels in line.
Space Corps Penitent Aide:
One of the most prestigious and safest positions a Penitent can achieve is that of personal Aide to a Space Corps Captain, providing valuable tactical insight bereft of any hint of morality or hesitation. Space Corps Captains rely on their Aides to grant them insight into the mind of the enemy, honed by years of first-hand experience and refined by formal education on military strategy. Aides are utterly loyal to their Captains as they are wholly dependent upon them in order to remain in their position, lest they return to the life of an ordinary Penitent. Each Captain chooses his or her Aide personally and disfavor can quickly see this decision reversed. Besides serving as advisors, Aides also act as general servants, bodyguards, and generally engage in whatever nebulous skullduggery their Captain may require of them.

2024.04.19 20:57 M82BFG To Challenge High Class Deathworlders Ch.03

Chapter 1 Previous Chapter
Palu
Lt Blake had been pulled away as soon as we arrived in the conference room. Leaving me and my guard unit alone with this ‘Gunny’ hologram. “So, Gunny, what exactly are you? In the Federation, AI are outlawed due to the fear of hostilities. Yet humans seemed to have mastered AI.”
Gunny’s avatar walked over to where Palu was sitting and played taking a seat next to me “Ah, yes. I am not a simple AI. The humans do have AIs yes. I am what the humans call a synthetic intelligence. The difference between an AI and a SI is an order of magnitude in complexity. An AI is more or less a self aware and thinking code on a server series. An SI, like me, is an engineered consciousness hard coded into a set of entangled quantum computers matrixes. Each unit is designed to mimic a region of the mind. The human brain was used as the model. I think very much like one of the humans, but I do also feel. The ship itself is my body. If the ship dies, I do as well. The way we are built, I can not be removed from the ship. An AI has more freedom in that they can upload themselves to a storage unit and eject from a doomed vessel. But they aren’t nearly as aware as I am. I know they have the same sensors I do but less of them. Every human on board wears a health monitor as well. The crew being happy and healthy gives me a positive emotional feedback response. Same goes for if the crew is getting stressed out, I feel their tension every time we go into combat. I am responsible for their well-being and they are responsible for taking care of my ‘body’.”
“So what about the AIs, can they still be a threat?” His explanation having confused me a little.
“Not at all, any SI’s ability to monitor, and if necessary, decommission any ship board AI would be the equivalent of crushing a bug. We have the ability to connect to any AI and see the entirety of it’s code in real time and make tweaks where needed. Or I could just delete the damn thing and replace it. That’s usually my personal preference. Doing so does take a lot of our attention, so we usually don’t do that. If the Admiral had allowed me to, I could have installed updated rudimentary AIs on your Fleet’s vessels as soon as I was in system. That idea was of course immediately shot down by the Admiral.”
In a perfectly timed surprise, Fleet Leader Krisick arrived with his guard detail and walked over. I hopped off the chair I had climbed onto and, Taking both right arms and grasping each others forearms. It’s been a long time since I had to greet someone of equal status.
The Fleet leader looked me up and down “Palu, you look like you’ve fallen from the tree canopies into thorns several times over. How are you doing?”
“Its been many sleepless nights for you as well I see. I’m sure Captain Preen is happy to have you off their ship finally. What do you think of our surprise allies? My perspective is only of their soldiers but this ship looks to be just pure devastation made reality.” I jested just as the door to the room opened and Field Marshal Brakk and, to my amazement, a bandaged and limping Field Marshal Tengu just behind. “Penko Tengu! You made it! I was scared we lost you. It’s been hours since you last reported in. How did your retreat fair?” Tengu is the oldest, most experienced of our current leadership and I couldn’t be happier to see him again.
“I never thought I would owe my life to demons of war, I had actually just been captured when the humans landed. The Lycaths were too coordinated. They routed every time we evaded and pressed in, we fell right into their trap. Those humans, they went manual combat against the Lycaths and it wasn’t even a fair fight.” Then he held up his upper right hand showing he only had 1 finger left attached. “The Sargent that pulled me out of the cage I was forced into, he even offered to get me my hand back, having seen the Lycath that bit it off.”
“So it was as we feared then. Thank the Stella you survived. These humans said they came because the Lycaths attacked a colony world they only recently settled. A world of twenty thousand. They killed over nineteen thousand of that world.” The Fleet leader starts on but just then, the door open yet again and Governor Krinks and a fiery haired human walked in.
“Hello everyone, I’m Lieutenant Reed. I am going to be making sure you are all taken care of while aboard the Vengeance but first, Field Marshal Tengu, are you in need of additional medical treatment before we begin? Sargent Dali said you were injured and they could only do field treatment before extraction. We do have medical capabilities for Verd physiology thanks to all those we’ve rescued so far working with us.”
“Just nerve blockers if you can. A few cuts and missing fingers isn’t going to keep me down but it would be nice to have my mind unclouded from this pain.” Tengu said, being the seasoned veteran he is.
“Right away. I am already in contact with the Medical staff. Gunny, have you finished building the full translation program?” Reed glared at Gunny’s avatar.
“Ma’am, I was done with that an hour ago. I have it for the Jassa, Xolo, Trilodons, Langailians, and essentially every species in their federation as well. The lexicons are all complete. The updated translation devices had already entered production and the first batch will be delivered as soon as the human element in engineering is satisfied with quality control.” The avatar responded faining offense to her accusatory question. “Corporal Vostoc just said he’s on his way. I decided to give the extra push since you are bugging me now as well”
About that time, a human and… another Verd walked in. The human pushing a cart with a tray on top, a syringe and a small vial on it, the carrying a plastic crate of some sort. The Verd slid the small crate onto the table and immediately went and saw to Field Marshal Tengu’s wounds. We just all stared in silence as this Verd was showing the human how to administer nerve blockers to a Verd.
Another group of three had entered the room while we were distracted, surprising us with a quick snap of their ever toothy jaw. A Xolo elder! A healthy looking one at that. The largest of the federation species. The Xolo are quadrupeds, being Category 9 thanks to higher gravity and solar radiation, they also have a lot of skeletal muscle and a covered in fur. Their front legs however have a split forelimb, the ‘upper” of the 2 having the more dexterity to use as a manipulator.
“It brings great joy to see our greatest Allies are still fighting and surviving. I am Quetall, last of Clan Dawnseeker. I was selected by the other clans to represent the Xolo. It pains me greatly to say, Kialon has fallen. It has been captured by the Lycaths.” He introduced himself, in their ever so methodical speech.
Off to the side, I saw the beetle like shape of a Jassa. Standing at .9 meters. A larger female of their species. “And when the Kialon fell, the Jassa retreated and went underground. We know we can survive for a time in deep hibernation. We didn’t have a better plan unfortunately.”
“Are there any others left?” Fleet Leader Krisick chimed in with concern in his voice.
“The world’s have only been subjugated. The populations treated as livestock. The Lycaths are proving our greatest fears of them to be true. Even the humans have not figured out how they communicate at the speeds they do and over the distances they do, but they were not immune to that fate. Their Tuc 3 colony, the one that was hit, suffered greatly. Many of those that survived joined the mission to save our people with the purpose and desire to wipe out the Lycaths.” Quetall spoke in a somber tone, but turned hopeful. “These Humans, while we have not learned much about them, living among them for the time we have, I feel they may be the only species able to go paw to paw with the Lycaths and win. I don’t know what class they are, but they are definitely higher class deathworlders. They are absolutely apex predators.”
Krinks interrupted “What class could they be? Had those gullible naïve Amoshai not uplifted the damned Lycaths, they’d have killed themselves for the rest of their existence like they were. I do still feel we need to isolate any species past class 10 if we even manage to survive this absurd catastrophe. But if these humans are higher than a 10, could they be problem as well?”
My curiosity was building “How did we even find these humans? It seems like they were very far away and met us only thanks to the Lychaths.”
The Jassa’s antenna shot up in excitement “I did math with them! Sorry. They killed the Lycaths that had us caged, then they were setting us free. They hadn’t figured out we were sentient yet. They weren’t hostile but kept shooing us away and I didn’t leave. I started just doing things to get their attention. Eventually I had a group of them looking at me. They were still not getting it and my people’s vocalizations being so foreign compared to their bark like vocalizations, that was hopeless. So I just started drawing basic math equations in the dirt. That seemed to get their attention at least. One of the humans came over and was deciphering what I was doing. I started drawing one through twenty in the dirt next to my math. That human figured out what I was doing and put their symbols next to mine. I then did the same math with their symbols. That was when it clicked for them. I made Quetall here do the same, they were seemingly dumbfounded. They pulled all of us off the surface and we worked for a few months to figure out our lexicons to a basic degree. They call the Jassa ‘giant tiger beetles’”
Quetall just shakes his head a bit “Cotcot, you’ve yet to introduce yourself. Anyway, she is correct. It is entirely thanks to her the humans even tried to look for us. They have called me ‘Big Hyena’. Everything Cotcot said is true, the humans were shooing us away constantly until Cotcot’s display. Having seen a human crush in the chitinous head plates of a Lycath right in front of me with only his balled up grasper, I was happy to get away from them. Cotcot pulled me back after a few days and showed me the basic equations she had drawn on the ground.”
“The Lieutenant Blake kept calling me a Koala, I assume these are all species off one of their worlds?” I said while trying to remember everything.
Cotcot excitedly chirped “All from their home world!”
The doors to the room opened again and seven humans walked in, one carrying a big of small plastic devices. “Excuse me, Verds, these are for all of you. These are upgraded and updated universal translators. They go inside your ear.” He explained as he started handing them out, even to all of our guards.
We took time to put them all in, the other humans waiting patiently. As soon as they were all in place, Admiral Valdez spoke “Greetings everyone. We needed to gather everyone to be able to coordinate our efforts. The local space around the planet has been cleared for now. We have ships jumping around the system to ensure the system is cleared all together. Unfortunately it seems the enemy ground forces are fairly well dug in the deeper into their lines we go. They have taken over half the planet. It will take time to deal with them without doing severe damage to the surface. With me, I have General Bishop of the UESN Iron Rain, General Shepard of the UESN Steel Horizon, General Cain of the UESN Iron Guard, General Arthur of the UESN Falling Star, and Jonathan Burke, our civilian contractor liaison. I am sure you have questions, we’ll let you go first.”
Kinks immediately interjected “You humans are clearly a higher class deathworld species. What class of Deathworlders are humans?”
They all looked at each other before making the admission, Burke speaking “We aren’t actually sure. We don’t quite understand your deathworld scale. We use a threat assessment scale that is based solely on the psychological and cultural traits of a civilization. But yours is something entirely different. Can you actually explain that one to us?”
Krinks took a slightly annoyed tone “It is based on all the species evolutionary traits. How many hardships did they had to evolve to survive. Their planets gravity, climate, how much solar radiation it takes, how many predators they have to compete with, how many diseases they have natively, all things like that.”
“Madam Krinks, let’s give them the checklist we usually go through to determine status. We can’t expect they would know the same scale we use” Fleet Leader Krisick said before turning to the humans and pulling up his tablet “The deathworld ranking is just a toughness scale of sorts. It’s been a good measure of how fast a species can expand and advance as well has how hard a fight against them can be. We’ve never really thought to use a scale for how well we can actually get along with someone since that’s what ‘threat assessment’ sounds like. That could be a good idea after this. You’ll have to explain your scale to us as well. Ah, here it is, the deathworld ranking system is a point based system. The first point is universal, does life regularly developed and die on the planet. Only one species has ever been classified as a category one. If it wasn’t for the Amoshai, we’d think a world that peaceful was impossible. But they are the oldest species in the Federation. Then there is a point for each category that applies. Does the planet have a harsh cold climate, does the planet have a harsh hot Climate, does the planet have extreme storms, does the planet have high gravity, and does the planet receive high levels of solar radiation. Most species check at least 2 of these boxes.”
General Bishop spoke up “How do you define the climate, what is the range for how hot or cold?”
Field Marshal Tengu was next to speak up, slouched back in his, clearly enjoying the nerve blockers “Fleet Leader Krisick forgot to mention we also use the Deathworlder scale to determine how we could or would fight a ground war if needed. Safe temperature ranges are 255 to 310. Zero being a still atom, 90 being oxygen boiling point, and 373 being waters boiling point. As for gravity, high gravity starts at eight newtons per kilogram. After that point atmospheric vehicles struggle to maneuver. We don’t have many high gravity species though. The only 2 we know of currently are the Xolo and the Lycaths. 8.7 and 9.2 respectively. I only know that info thanks to planning ground operations as a Colonel.” Then sank back into his seat.
I had to add “Solar radiation, it is a matter of how much ultraviolet and gamma radiation make it to the surface. Regular natural tectonic events are also a factor, both of those are a point. Then there’s diseases, parasitic infections, cross species infections, there’s a 5 point potential there. Then there’s predators. Aggressive predators are a point but predators that also still hunt the local sentient species is an additional point.”
With that I noticed the humans all making what I assumed was concerned facial expressions. I definitely wanted make sure there wasn’t anything wrong “Is there an issue with any of these? Are these hard to imagine for you?”
“Oh no, we are actually concerned about where we fall on this scale all together. You see, Earth, our home world has all these boxes checked and then some. Your temperature scale matches up with our Kelvin scale. Earth’s temperature ranges greatly. It can’t be 330k at the hottest and 186 at the coldest. We have lots of dangerous weather conditions thanks to that. We have a very active star at that. It puts out a good bit of gamma and ultraviolet radiation as well as there being a lot of electromagnetic interference our local star produces. Earth also has a lot tectonic activity that results in a lot of earthquakes and other volcanic activity.” Admiral Valdez spoke.
General Cain, the scarred white haired man took over “Then to touch on the biological, hell, Rabies alone checks two of those boxes. It’s cross species, spreads easily, and is extremely fatal. Rabies is only the tip of the iceberg there. We’ve got at least a dozen viruses that use to cause a lot of issues and there’s several bacterial infections that are hard to get rid of. Parasites, we got a bunch but we’ve got methods to deal with all of them.”
General Arthur, the youngest looking of the group, with very dark skin interjected “Earth has predators on every continent and even many in the water. Many that have no issues hunting a human. The Polar bear is the largest we have at 360kg, they are armed with teeth, claws, and brute force. Then there’s tiny spiders that are highly venomous. Hell, even the water has predators that can easily kill a human in many ways. You’ve got serrated teeth, venom, drowning, and even electrocution.”
“So you are… class eleven?” Krinks started to say before being interrupted by General Bishop “Earth also has higher gravity then the others it seems. Our gravity is 9.8newton per kg if my math is right.”
Gunny decided it best to take over with a few questions “Is there a check box for mega fauna? Earth has land animals that can weigh up to 6,000kg and sea based animals that can weigh over 160,000kg.”
We all could do nothing but stare at these humans. Quetall was the first to speak again. “So class 12, as I suspected. Though there’s a lot I heard we should consider shifting the scale for. We’ve never classified a planet past 12 because the environment is always too harsh for any species reach the point of forming civilizations at all. Even the Lycaths were on their way to self terminating before the Amoshai decided to uplift.”
“So what about your ‘threat assessment scale’? How does yours work?” Fleet Leader Krisick was genuinely interested as he even leaned in when asking.
“We grade the species based on how often they fight amongst themselves, how competitive natured they are, do they keep slaves, what is their governing structure, and how do they portray other species in their media. For an example, we would conclude we wouldn’t be able to get along with a species that portray themselves as superior to every other species, keeps slaves, is hyper competitive, and has an authoritarian governing structure. We would almost guarantee that we would end up in a war with them. The example I just used was the Bosolan.” Burke responded.
“Humanity is a 3 on our scale. Tier one is what we would consider harmless, tier two are peaceful species, tier three we would consider equivalent to humanity. All these we would happily try to communicate with, though the great majority of the species we know of in this category are still pre-FTL, thus, we haven’t made contact. Tier four could still be compatible but would be considered aggressive by our standards. Tier five are species that seem to have no interest in peace. They are just hostile. We have the Lycaths listed as a tier five species.” Admiral Valdez continued.
“Sorry, but I have to ask, what was the Amoshai home world like if they were listed as a class 1 deathworld?” General Bishop asked with a look of confusion.
“The Amoshai were unique even to us, they were actually three different co-existing sapient species. They considered themselves one people. Their home world, Sangula, was mostly an ocean world peppered with islands. It oceans were never more than a few hundred meters deep, it had a very strong magnetosphere, a very stable climate, no toxic flora, and the worst of the fauna were scavengers, no predators at all. It was easily the most peaceful planet we have ever seen exist.” Cotcot said remorsefully.
“The Lycaths ruined that world. They poisoned the water and decimated the surface. They used that world as the catalyst to become the horror they are today. The Amoshai never settled other worlds, we know they are lost.” Quetall followed just as remorseful.
"So the main reason we gathered all of you here, we don’t know enough about the enemy. Their fleets don’t use any know communication we can track, they don’t seem to store any data on their computer systems, and even in interrogation, they refuse to communicate at all. Instead, they seem to have a method to self terminate. We need Intel, we have no clue who we are fighting. We only know what they look like. They are far too well coordinated to not have a major advantage in communication. We also don’t see their technological evolutionary path. Their tech is seemingly a mix of different technologies. We are hoping you can help us here. Do you have any information on Lycaths that you can share?” General Cain said in a firm tone.
Quetall spoke up “The Xolo had extensive documentation on the Lycaths stolen from the Amoshai. I was already in the process of accessing what I still can on the Verdicant network. I do know the Federation voted on the Lycaths uplift. The Federation voted no. The Amoshai ignored that vote and chose to do it on their own.”
“Here it is! The Amoshai landed on the Lycaths homeworld, Suen, and took roughly 100 subjects off Suen to Sangula. They split them into four groups to teach and train independently. The Lycaths learned fast, faster than any of us. They were seemingly able to learn as a collective as well. The Amoshai would teach one group a method to complete a task and the other groups would all be able to complete the task exactly as the original group was instructed. This alone should have been cause for concern but the Amoshai saw it as an advantage and started training them faster, dividing them further into 16 groups and teaching them all different subjects. As before, the knowledge was shared amongst all without obvious communication.”
“They learned all they could learn about how to refine metals, build industry, and advanced sciences. They were completely docile, learning all they could until the Amoshai returned to the Lycaths home world again. When they returned, they discovered all the knowledge they had thought to those on Sangula was somehow shared with ALL Lycaths. The Planet had been converted to a Industrial powerhouse with artificial satellites and a few rudimentary ships in orbit.”
“ Those ships knew they were coming and launched a surprise attack as soon as they entered the system. At the same time, the Lycaths on Sangula launched their own surprise attack. Taking over any and every system they could on the land. Lychas ships assaulted, boarded, and overtook any ship they could of the few that jumped to their home world. Weeks later, those ships jumped back to Sangula and released hundreds more Lycaths on the surface. It wasn’t until this we knew something was going horribly wrong.”
“With the surveillance systems in place still, we saw they had a form we had never seen before. A single, significantly larger, slower form of a Lycaths was let off of each ship. The others ripping out any obstacle in the way of the larger ones. No other ships moved between the systems. But within a month, there were easily a thousand new Lycaths on Sangula and the world was changing.”
“ The Federation took 2 months to figure out what to do after this discovery. When we returned, Sangula was completely transformed. Almost a million Lycaths on the surface and still no ship movement. The scouts returned, delivering the information that forced the Federation to give orders to our fleet. I am not sure if the Federation was too slow to respond to the threat or if the response was just not strong enough. Maybe it was both.”
Admiral Valdez let out a big sigh “So they are a highly adaptable hive mind species. The larger forms you saw are likely a queen of sorts. I am forced to assume the queens also communicate between themselves somehow. With all the hive mind species we know of, there is always a very subtle line for communication. Ants on Earth use a trail of pheromones that can change almost instantly to communicate over distance. That method isn’t instant and doesn’t work from ship to ship or ship to ground. You have no Intel on their communication at all?”
“Sorry, we do not. That’s about all the Intel we still have as well. I am certain Central Station still has the archives. They were hard coded. The entire architecture was hardened against attack and intrusion, both physical and digital. We were forced to abandon it however. It was left in a dormant shutdown state. I have both the coordinates and access codes right here.” Fleet Leader Krisick said as he pulled out a circular storage device.
Gunny phased out of his seat at the table and reappeared standing at attention next to the door “Sorry to interrupt Admiral, warp signatures inbound. I assume this is their counter attack. You are needed on the bridge.”
“That was faster than I anticipated, How many ships?” Admiral Valdez asked as he stood and readied to rush to the bridge.
“It looks like there are four separate fleet, roughly 500 ships in each. It also appears these are fresh fleets, not the worn down partial strength fleet we were met with here. I took the liberty of dispatching the Cyno Scout ships a quarter AU out from the twenty most likely emergence points.” Gunny said, stepping aside as the door automatically opened.
Admiral Valdez paused at the doorway “Fleet Leader, would you care to join me on the bridge? It would be wise for us to learn from your experience.”
