Anies has a PhD in political science. He is not a stupid man when it comes to politics. The fact that he managed to get elected to be the governor after his removal as a minister of education is a testament to that. His strategy to utilize racism, sectarianism, and religious conservatism to garner supports and votes, is actually very brilliant. Whether you like that kind of strategy or not, it managed to get him elected. That's what matters the most.
What Anies did last night is called dog whistle politics. He won the election through racism and sectarianism. So he used the pribumi rhetoric to embolden his supporters base much like what Trump is doing right now. What he did last night was just the beginning. We should expect to see more outrageous and inflammatory rhetoric coming out of his mouth for the next 5 years. He will certainly use inflammatory remarks and religious issues again to distract the public from the incompetence of his administration. Not only that, but he will also use religious and pribumi card to coordinate his followers to attack anyone who gets in his way. There are some people who oppose his policy? Just label them as anti pribumi or even anti islam. Also notice how he quoted sayings (pepatah) from all over Indonesia? He tried to reach not only Jakarta but also the whole Indonesia last night. This means that most likely he'll be running either for President or Vice President in the 2019 Election.

Republicans in the US talk about welfare queens and getting rid of food stamps that is dog whistling. It's an indirect attack on blacks. Why? Because the group of people in the US who are on welfare the most are black people. It's the same case with the current pribumi debacle caused by Anies' speech last night. We all know that the term "pribumi" always excludes Chinese-Indonesians. Hence, Anies' speech last night was a dog-whistle about Chinese Indonesians.
