🔗Durable DSLR Camera Case with Neoprene Exterior

https://preview.redd.it/e20685bss34d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a3477659f87ec3b0208121acf6263407df1dc1d9
I recently purchased the USA Gear QTL Portable DSLR Camera Case Bag, Southwest and I must say, it's been a game-changer for me. I love the vibrant southwest pattern that not only looks great but also doesn't give away the fact that there's an expensive camera inside my bag. The dimensions are perfect at 7.25 inches x 6 inches x 5.5 inches, making it a great option when I'm on the go.
One of the standout features of this case is its durable neoprene exterior. It's rugged and weather-resistant, ensuring my camera stays safe and secure no matter the conditions. The cover zippers and metal hardware provide extra protection, while the reinforced belt loop offers stability and flexibility in how I carry it.
The adjustable shoulder strap and padded hand strap make it comfortable and easy to use, whether I'm carrying it on my shoulder or hand. However, I find that the bag can feel a bit weighty when I'm carrying a DSLR with a lens attached, making it better suited for shorter outings.
The USA Gear QTL Camera Case Bag has exceeded my expectations in terms of visual appeal, sturdiness, design comfort, size, and weight. The southwest pattern adds a touch of style, while the reinforced metal buckles ensure durability and longevity. The scratch-resistant interior and padded dividers provide extra protection for my camera and lenses. Overall, this case is a perfect blend of style and functionality.
While I appreciate the beautiful design and comfortable carrying options, I wish the interior had a bit more space to accommodate additional camera accessories. Additionally, the rain cover can be challenging to use at first, but once you're familiar with it, it gets easier. Despite these minor drawbacks, I believe the USA Gear QTL Portable DSLR Camera Case Bag, Southwest is a fantastic option for photographers looking for a stylish and durable camera case.

🔗Northwest Electronics Waterproof and Impact-Resistant Camera Case

https://preview.redd.it/5p7wmbpss34d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a31ffc07bd06b23805eb6da07f86d02d3bbda72a
I've recently been using the "Northwest Electronics Shielded Case" for all my outdoor adventures, and it's been a game-changer. The O-ring waterproof seal is a lifesaver when I'm near water or in humid climates, giving me peace of mind knowing my gear is safe. It fits my camera and lens perfectly, leaving no room for damage.
The automatic pressure equalization purge has been especially useful, eliminating the need for manual adjustments and ensuring everything stays snug and secure. The high impact polycarbonate hard case has saved my camera from a few accidents already, and its robust cell core with solid walls provide extra support.
Despite its durability, the case is lightweight and fits comfortably in my bag. The throw-down latches ensure everything stays in place, even during the most trying of times. Overall, I am incredibly impressed with the performance and reliability of this case.
However, one downside is that the customizable foam inserts can be a little cumbersome at first, but taking some time to measure and pre-cut everything made it much easier. All in all, I would highly recommend the Northwest Electronics Shielded Case for any adventurer looking to keep their gear safe without compromising on quality.

🔗Insta360 Gear Hard Travel Case

https://preview.redd.it/5iphym0ts34d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c2e129a86fa37b208adcce54ba2893c8d9e602a6
I've been using the Hard Carrying Case for Insta360 One X/X2 in my action photography adventures, and let me tell you, it's been a game-changer. The first thing that caught my eye was its button closure - it's so simple yet effective at keeping my precious camera safe and secure.
One of the features I absolutely love about this case is its durability. Made with high-quality PU material, it not only gives off a stylish vibe but also provides water resistance and protection against dampness. I've been traveling with this case for many photography trips now, and my camera is always in tip-top shape thanks to the hard PU surface that keeps scratches and dings at bay.
The size of this carrying case is perfect for those who want to travel light. I can easily fit my Insta360 One X/X2 along with its frame housing inside, making it easy to toss in my backpack or carry-on luggage. Not to mention, the convex lens part design provides extra safety to my camera lens from any potential damage like scratches, dust, or scrapes.
Another great thing about this case is its versatility. Designed specifically for the Insta360 One X/X2, it can also be connected with a selfie stick or used with a tripod for better results.
There's just one downside to this case - it might be a bit too mini for some people's taste. However, I personally find the compact design extremely convenient and portable, especially when I'm on the go.
In summary, the Hard Carrying Case for Insta360 One X/X2 is an awesome companion for all my action photography needs. Its durable and stylish build, combined with its versatile design and size, make it an absolute must-have for anyone who wants to keep their camera safe and sound while exploring the world of action photography.

🔗Fully Enclosed Waterproof Case for Rylo 360

https://preview.redd.it/o943bapts34d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=46ff74d106463eb67e1ddb5ac61b78906d70f564
The Rylo Adventure Case is the ultimate accessory for your 360 video camera, offering full protection during all of your outdoor adventures. I've personally used this case for surfing and snowboarding, and it's kept my camera safe from scratches and dings. The case is waterproof up to 3 meters (10 feet), making it perfect for underwater shots. Included are a mounting buckle and two adhesive mounts (one flat, one curved) for securing the camera to any surface - helmets, surfboards, windows, you name it.
However, the lens protector is made from a material that can be easily scratched, which is a con for those looking for a flawless protectant. Also, the sound quality is slightly muffled when using the case, which might affect your overall experience with the camera.
Overall, the Rylo Adventure Case is a solid investment for anyone who wants to take their 360 video camera to the extremes without worrying about damaging it. The ability to use it underwater and the secure mounting options make it a must-have for any adventurer.

🔗Durable Aluminum Alloy Protective Case for GoPro HERO8 Black

https://preview.redd.it/51s0vreus34d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=36884215f68c364f1ceac2c63c5245424efa9228
I recently purchased the PULUZ Aluminum Alloy Protective Case specifically designed for my GoPro HERO8 Black, and I must say, it has been a game-changer for my photography adventures. The sturdy aluminum alloy case not only provides an added layer of protection to my camera but also looks incredibly sleek and professional.
One aspect I absolutely love about this case is its ability to help dissipate heat effectively. I often use my GoPro for capturing high-definition videos in various settings, and I've noticed that the camera tends to heat up quite a bit. Thanks to the efficient heat dissipation properties of the PULUZ case, however, I no longer have to worry about overheating or damaging my camera during extended shoots.
Another notable feature of this case is its compatibility with external accessories such as UV lenses and polarizing lenses. With a 52mm thread size, I can easily attach these essential photo tools to enhance the overall quality of my shots. Furthermore, the built-in 1/4-inch screw hole ensures that the case is compatible with any standard tripod, giving me more flexibility when setting up shoots.
However, there is one small issue I've encountered with the PULUZ case – it does add a bit of weight to my setup. As someone who values portability, I sometimes find myself wishing that the case were a tad lighter so that I could carry it around more comfortably. Regardless, the benefits of this protective case far outweigh the minimal inconvenience caused by its weight.
In conclusion, the PULUZ Aluminum Alloy Protective Case has significantly enhanced my GoPro HERO8 Black experience. Its durable construction, efficient heat dissipation, and compatibility with a variety of accessories make it an indispensable tool for budding photographers and adventure enthusiasts alike. While it may add a bit of weight to your camera setup, the added protection and convenience more than make up for it.

🔗TSA-Approved Waterproof Action Camera Case

https://preview.redd.it/ekr6ywzus34d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2a34f8e5d164759d609dfbc86a99471bb5d2ea7b
I recently had the chance to test out the Eylar Protective Hard Camera Case, and I must say, it has been a game-changer in my life. As an avid action camera user, I understand the importance of having a reliable case that not only keeps my camera safe but also makes it easy to access. This Eylar case has exceeded my expectations on both fronts.
Firstly, the size is perfect for my camera needs, with dimensions of 13.37 inches x 11.62 inches x 6 inches on the outside and a slightly smaller inner space of 11.81 inches x 8.87 inches x 5.18 inches. The rubber gasket lining ensures that my camera remains waterproof and dustproof, offering up to 1 meter of submergence protection. The customizable foam padding is a great feature, as it allows me to create a snug fit for my camera and its accessories. The case includes two customizable pull and pluck cubes, one bottom pad layer, and one top egg crate layer, providing ample protection against shocks and impacts.
Another highlight of this case is its TSA approval, which means I can take my camera with me on flights without worrying about it getting damaged or stolen. The lockable latches and fittings ensure that the case remains secure throughout my travels. The case also has a stackable design, making it easy to store and transport multiple camera cases together.
However, one downside of this case is that it does not explicitly mention the materials it is made of. It would be helpful to know whether the case is resistant to cracking or damage from the sun. Additionally, while it does meet TSA requirements, the lack of specific details about the case's warranty might concern some potential buyers.
In conclusion, the Eylar Protective Hard Camera Case has been a valuable addition to my camera equipment. Its ability to keep my camera safe from water, dust, and shocks, along with its TSA approval and customizable foam padding, make it stand out among other options on the market. Although it could benefit from more detailed information about its materials and warranty, its overall performance and usability make it a worthwhile investment for action camera enthusiasts like myself.

🔗Soft Silicone Protective Case for GoPro Hero 9 Black

https://preview.redd.it/72acphivs34d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2340c0ba5db10676d26fd6ad26c5d34905860e9a
As an avid adventurer and photography enthusiast, I've always been on the lookout for the best accessories to protect and enhance the performance of my GoPro Hero 9 Black camera. When I came across the TELESIN Action Camera Protective Case Cover, I knew I had to give it a try, and it didn't disappoint!
Firstly, the customized shape of the case ensures it fits my GoPro like a glove, with no gaps, providing maximum protection from scratches and dust. The premium soft silicone material not only gives the case a delicate appearance, but it also feels incredibly comfortable and smooth to touch. I love how it safeguards my camera's delicate lens, preserving its brand-new condition.
One feature I truly appreciated is the easily detached lanyard. Not only does it allow me to either hang the camera around my neck for easy accessibility, but I can also wrap it around my wrist for secure and comfortable handling during intense action shots.
However, it's important to note that this case is specifically designed for the GoPro Hero 9 Black only, so other models won't be compatible.
Overall, the TELESIN Action Camera Protective Case Cover has significantly improved my photography experience, providing peace of mind knowing that my GoPro Hero 9 Black is well-protected and ready for action.

🔗Waterproof and Durable Action Shot Camera Case

https://preview.redd.it/d5jkjh2ws34d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2b35b88a739e37c9f69916417a6c60538db5bc4a
I recently got my hands on the Action Shot Water Proof Case, primarily to protect my trusty Action Shot camera during my adventurous outdoor excursions. I must say, it has been a game changer!
The first thing that impressed me was its solid build. The rugged design can easily withstand impact and falls, giving me the peace of mind when I'm out capturing extreme shots. Even more impressive is the all-weather sealing feature that keeps my camera dry and safe, irrespective of whether I'm jumping into a pool or attacking the waves on my surfboard.
The easy Click & Grip mounting system is definitely a highlight. It's compatible with all Action Shot mounting hardware, which makes it incredibly convenient to switch between different mounts based on my requirement.
However, as with any product, it does have its shortcomings. The case isn't as water-proof as advertised. I've had a couple of instances where water somehow managed to seep in despite being fully sealed. Additionally, the case's depth doesn't seem to match the 10ft/3meter specification, so that's another point of contention.
All in all, I believe the Action Shot Water Proof Case is a decent accessory for those looking to safeguard their cameras in harsh environments. The robust design and easy mounting system make it versatile, but the lack of proper water-proofing is something that needs improvement.

🔗Stylish Forest Green Camcorder Bag

https://preview.redd.it/1jwyjsews34d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=083bc325c400363c574e9aefe3b90619cd2bc117
I recently got the Vangoddy Laurel Forest Green Sport and Action Camera Compact Camera Case to house my precious camera and related gear. As an avid adventurer and storyteller, I need a case that not only provides the utmost protection, but also keeps my camera and its accessories easily accessible.
Ever since I got this case, it's been a game-changer. The nylon material feels secure and sturdy, offering a sense of confidence that my camera is well protected, especially when I'm hiking through rugged terrains or surfing wild waves. Interestingly, its unique padded fold out camera compartment provides an impressive level of protection that has kept my camera safe from any accidents.
One of the things I love about this case is the rear pockets. They allow me to swiftly access my SD memory cards, cables, chargers - the list goes on. This quick access feature has saved me from countless missed photo opportunities. And, when it comes to carrying this case, the adjustable, removable shoulder strap with extra padding has made my travel experience incredibly comfortable.
However, one minor drawback is space for accessories. As a heavy-duty traveler, I pack quite a bit for my photography trips. So, while this case is fantastic, it might not have enough space to cater to all the accessories I might need.
All in all, I'd say the Vangoddy Laurel Forest Green Sport and Action Camera Compact Camera Case is a must-have for photographers or videographers on the go. Its high-quality material, superior protection features, and convenience, make it worth every penny.
So, the next time you hit the road with your action camera, don't forget to pack yours. You won't regret it!

I can personally attest to the convenience and efficiency of the Vivitar Hard-Shell Case for GoPro Action Cameras. . As an avid action camera enthusiast, I've often struggled with managing and transporting my ever-growing collection of accessories. .
This case, with its robust hard-shell construction and thoughtfully designed divided compartments, has been a game-changer. . No more scratched lenses or misplaced memory cards! . Plus, the simplified carrying strap means I can quickly grab my case and go. .
My only minor complaint is that the netted top pocket could be a tad bigger, but overall, this case has made my action camera adventures much smoother. .

2024.06.02 04:32 MiscellaneousPeaCrap Could I use a dog kennel with no live animal inside as my checked luggage?

I know additional fees will be applied as my dog fits a 36 inch crate, but I've been wanting a crash tested crate from Rock Creek Crates for a while and the company doesn't exist in my country, so I was wondering if it would be possible to use the crate as my checked luggage (adding signs of no live animals aboard and probably placing some other stuff inside the crate in case I buy something too big for the carry on bag).
Some more context: I've contacted the company and they don't ship internationally (at least not to my country); I've seen answers for taking pets aboard online, but none for my specific question; the crate will not be collapsible as I don't trust those in case an accident was to happen, I'm worried it might collapse onto my dog instead of keeping him safe.

2024.06.02 02:47 O1Balto Talk me out of (or into) a Lennar home! (Portland / Smith Creek)

Hello friends,
We went under contract with Lennar last week and they're submitting my ernest money on Monday (the sales rep was kind enough to hold it for me- to give me some time to decide if I wanted to move forward or not). Since we've gone under contract, we've found a plethora of horror stories and reviews on Lennar homes. I did notice some of the same reviews copied and pasted onto multiple websites- which I don't doubt their legitimacy or pain and suffering, but that does seem to inflate the negative reviews
We understand the the work is subcontracted out to the lowest bidder and the quality of workmanship will vary depending on the Construction Manager (CM) and the skill of the labor pool in that area (Florida seeming to have it the worst). We also understand that many of the complaints stem from utilizing their own mortgage company. It seems as though most of these issues are based on location, as here in the Pacific North West- we haven't seen nearly as many issues from what I've read when compared to the east coast. The Lennar reviews even have somewhat decent reviews here.
Here's my situation:
I'm currently using the VA home loan locked in at 6.5%, so I shouldn't need to deal with Lennars mortgage company or the whole circus attached to it. We haven't gotten any static for wanting to have a 3rd party home inspection done, in fact they seem to already know one would be ordered. We love the location and layout of the house.
This would be our first home purchase and we're not looking for anything fancy. Many of the complaints about Lennar homes on Youtube- show extravagant (IMO) homes that look like they should be in magazines.
I'm perfectly fine with the "American cookie cutter, 2-story, 3-bedroom, attached 2 car garage house w/ driveway." But after reading all the horror stories- I'm questioning if that's even a possibility anymore in todays world. I don't care for options (I can add that later), I just want a quality home to live in that won't quickly disintegrate. Something that isn't going to be the largest regret of my life and cause me to file for bankruptcy.
I would be purchasing the home with my better half and we plan on splitting all the bills- the mortgage between us would be around 1650. We found that purchasing a normally built house (ie. not a track home), the prices tend to increase significantly inverse to the sq. footage.
The home we want is also a single detached... which means we're on the hook for everything exterior, where as if we were in a townhome, the entire envelope of the building is taken care of by the HOA. Although we WANT the detached, the benefits of not having to pay for envelope repair does sound nice, but that shouldn't be the only reason we'd want it.
The entire neighborhood looks amazing. I tried looking for older Lennar home locations, just to see how the neighborhoods faired with time, but the ones I saw (still only 3-4 years old) looked in great shape.
From what I can see- my only other options are really:
-Rent an apartment (which will cost just as much, we'd have less space (we have 2 kids and 3 dogs), rent would increase each year, and we're paying on something we do not own. Even getting an single bedroom apartment for just myself would be 1500+
-Rent out someone's house (Costs about just as much, paying on something we don't own, they too usually adopt the same pet policies as the apartments)
Any guidance or reviews from people living in the Smith Creek homes would be GREATLY appreciated. It's supposed to rain the next few days (surprise) so we plan on stopping by to walk through the house to see if we can't catch any leaks (The dry wall is up but the interior is completely unfinished)

2024.06.02 00:53 fadedspark Corsair's new RX fans - Actually really good, and one minor nitpick.

https://imgur.com/a/wwTWMGS
So, to start off, I'd like to thank Corsair for sending these out! I'm immensely thankful!
I had LL120s previously that were a little chattery when cold, and some AF120's in the front that were a LOT chattery when cold, these are fully silent at low RPMs and much quieter than my previous fans while moving more air. Even the max speed is about the same as the old fans and moves what feels like twice the volume of air.
From a performance perspective, I truly can not complain. Great for watercooling performance.
The lighting is good, however only 8 LEDs per fan, and they do have a bit of a hotspot from each one. Some people may not like this, I'm fine with it. The software is classic iCue, and the colors are great. It's corsair, they've had lighting and color down for a long time.
HOWEVER!
A little bit weird in some scenarios.
With the wonky-ass loop that I have (I've been meaning to upgrade Case and rads for a while) since I can't fit a 360 up front in the 560x comfortably, and I've got a Corsair XR up top, the rear fan had to be connected solo to the hub. Thankfully, they include a long cable in the kit, or I would have been up the creek on that one. The fittings on the radiator fully impede connection to daisy chain the last fan with the other five, and with a push set up on the top rad, exhausting out the top of the case, which is a fairly common layout, It's impossible to get to the connector. Not tight, but impossible. I'm using Corsair's soft fittings for reference. A slimmer fitting might make a difference, but there was at least a few mm of interference, and it just might be something people have to deal with.
Secondly, and this is a nitpick, I wish they included a short straight connection cable in the box with the fans. And I do mean straight on both ends. It would make connecting the front 3 to the top 2 fans a little simpler in my case, and while the 90deg cables do work, they are a little fussy to plug in as they are hard to hold on to, and the thickness of the cable itself tends to cause the connectors to rotate to the position they shipped in. If you can plug them in before connecting, it's super easy. Just hard in the case.
On to the software, I've used iCue for a LONG time, but with the link system being used for fan control, it changes things a bit.
And it's much for the better.
Truly, I think the cooling options under the fan controls might be the best reason to pick these up. The control over the fans is done in app, you can set curves, pick the sensor you want fans to adjust to on an per-fan basis (You want your fronts to ramp on CPU and top to ramp on GPU? Go for it.) which is incredible. Fancontrol could do per header, but if you had daisy chain or a splitter? Too bad.
I was previously using fancontrol to try and control my fans and it was just kind of clumsy. I had to use a PWM splitter on my old fans, and they always felt a little slow to adjust, or some would just not adjust much, if at all.
Now, speed changes are rapid if you want, or gracefully curve up and down as preferred. With my system set up for a max speed of 90% at GPU hotspot of 65, I don't hear them at all unless I've got a full load going in OCCT. Again, performance wise, incredible. It's the software that makes them different, we've got good fans already, but being able to drop a piece of software for once, is nice.
And lastly, cabling.
The whole point is daisy-chain. And it really does clean things up.
I removed, when installing these:
1 6 way PWM powecontrol splitter
1 Corsair Lighting node
1 Corsair RGB splitter thing (I forget the name)
All the assorted cable for 3 RGB fans and 3 non RGB fans, as well as these 3 boxes.
I only added the one box, a PCIe power cable (Got to remove a SATA one, so I call that net positive. Less overall cable.) and the tails from both ends of the daisy chain.
The two hard drive bays you see on the backside used to be a hot mess of cables. I gave up taming them after the SP120 RGBs that came with this case failed and I replaced them with some whites that I had and just left it be for a while.
Now, it's left plenty of room for organization, I can actually fit everything in the center straps for the first time in eons, and If I move cases in the future, it will be even easier.
It's a great product, and I've seen them on sale already in Canada for $85cad, which is the same I paid for a set of LL120s, and they blow them away. For that money, I'd pick up a pair without question. The flexibility in having a High performance or Silent option with a simple curve is great. At retail in the US, I'm seeing about $100usd, it's a bit harder of a sell, but if you're looking at premium fans nowadays, that is still quite reasonable.
Overall, great product, a premium product, but if you're already spending the money on premium fans, definitely worth taking a look at.

2024.06.02 00:51 fadedspark Corsair's new RX fans - Actually really good, and one minor nitpick.

https://imgur.com/a/wwTWMGS

2024.06.02 00:45 O1Balto Talk me out of (or into) a Lennar home!

2024.06.02 00:25 Pippapeppers Work trip boundaries

My husband (36) and I (33), have been married for almost 2 years but together for 14yrs. Last weekend, his job was invited to a tequila hacienda in Mexico for 3 days. We didn’t know what the trip entailed just that he was flying out with other people (not his own coworkers). We assumed it was other people from different companies. He met them at the airport & all he tells me about them is that it’s 5 highly qualified cool people. First day he’s sending pictures of the beautiful grounds & the food & the expensive tastings. We usually send each other pictures when we’re away so everything’s normal. Then at night, after all planned tours & activities, he sends me the last video of a few people sitting by the fireplace drinking. Didn’t hear from him after so I called but no answer. No big deal, maybe he just fell asleep. Next day, he didn’t acknowledge my call. Again no big deal, I don’t wanna press about a call. He’s proably just having fun networking. He continues to send me pictures of the activities & food during the day. He then sends me videos of the mariachi showing up & I can see that he was sitting by 3 young women. At this point, I have not asked about the people in the group. I just know the name of one of the girls, Jane, the organizer who arranged the trip & flights and whom he was communicating with before the trip. So I started asking, who was Jane in the video, & who are the other ones & if those are the people he flew with. He proceeds to tell me he doesn’t even remember their names, that he’s been mainly hanging out with Jane & the other 2 guys in the group & also shares how there’s about 15 more people there that flew out from other places. I found it suspicious that he didn’t know their names but I let it go. Then he called & said that it was a long day & everybody was tired & that he’d call me back when he was back in his room. He didn’t. So I called. No answer. I texted asking if he was ok. He responded hours later that he was, that he was just having a good time. I waited & called again & no answer. At this point, I’m upset. Why doesn’t he answer? What is he hiding? Who are all these people? So I went on social media & easily found them. I found the 3 women & the 2 guys he flew with. They were all young attractive women & one of them was some type of nude art performer. I’m not a jealous person. We are an easy going couple who never give each other a hard time about this kind of stuff. But seeing that he was hanging out with these beautiful women at what was basically an all inclusive vacation (not a typical work trip with meeting or sales pitches), made me so upset because he didn’t think it was appropriate to at least tell me who he was with or call me back both nights. I was extremely upset but talked it out with myself & decided I was gonna let it go. Bad decisions are made work trips or not. Next day, plan was for me to pick him up. We live 15 mins away from airport. He lands, proceeds to say that Jane was ordering them a car & to make it “easier”for me, they would just drop him off somewhere on their way out. Made absolutely no sense because they were headed north & we live south. Also the airport is complicated & in order get an Uber, you have to shuttle to a lot & wait in queue. My husband hates people at airports, hates waiting, took only a backpack, did not have luggage. Yet, he’s hanging out with them at the airport waiting for all of them to get their checked luggage & willing to shuttle to a lot to be dropped off at Chili’s (further away) so that I pick him from there instead. In my head all I’m thinking is wow he just cant get enough of them. I ended up picking him up from the airport, took 10 mins, & I just went off on him. Told him about how I felt & how uncomfortable I was with him partying it up with women he didn’t even tell me about & him not calling back. We fought. I expressed how going forward I need him to call me back. This whole trip made me uncomfortable & I find it inappropriate that he’s staying up drinking with who knows whom & doesn’t answer. If you read my whole rant, how do you deal with work trips? What are healthy boundaries? This was a first time for me & I know I’m overreacting but I also feel it was inappropriate.

2024.06.01 13:17 TheDreadPirateRobots [Have Gun - Will Travel] - 1.8

[INDEX]
I banked the fire and stared into the golden eyes of Beatale before I crept into my makeshift tent.
I still had my auric vision running and couldn’t help but notice the thin silver cord that ran from me to Horse. Firming up my aura, I reached out with my hand and grabbed it. I could feel the nearly imperceptible vibration between my fingers as I used my mind to probe at the thread. I could feel a bright spark of intellect, a light at the end of a tunnel. Pushing with my mind, I slid down the thread until the spark grew larger and eventually filled my inner vision with a hazy white light. Horsey thoughts nudged at me curiously.
I slid into the haze and immediately lost all sense of direction. If it wasn’t for the silver thread, I’d have no idea how to exit this shifting white fog. Horsey thoughts got stronger as I followed the thread while the haze thinned and cleared to reveal an endless prairie of green grass. I found myself standing before a naked man wearing a horse mask and I stared in shock. It was obviously me wearing a cheap costume horse mask — there was no mistaking my tattoos.
“What did you expect?” Horse neighed at me. “I am you and you are me and we are all together. Goo goo ga joob.”
Horse made a shooing motion with his hands and I accelerated backwards through the white haze and slammed into my own body with a gasp. I stared at the tarp overhead for a long minute, processing this new revelation. Horse was a part of me, a piece of my spirit. Whatever psychic stuff I did with that silver cord lead me into a house of mirrors where I got to look at myself pretending to be a horse. I can’t even deal with that right now.
Rolling into my blankets, I dropped off to sleep.
*Ding*
-=- - Welcome to the Dreamworld - Included in the Psychic Skills pack, the Inner Sanctum is your psychic domain. It is the mental fortress that you must secure and maintain to defend against psychic and spiritual assaults. All of your neurosis and fears are symbolised in this realm and must be defeated or subjugated before you can become master of the domain. Good luck. -=-
I banished the pop-up and looked around. I knew I was asleep, but everything was just as real as when I was awake. I was breathing, I could feel the floor under my feet, and if it weren’t for the pop-up, I would have sworn I had been teleported. The room I was in resembled an oversized luxury prison cell, maybe a thirty foot cube. No windows. Rough stone walls with thick mortar. Large brass wall sconces were set directly into the stone and suffused the room with a warm, golden light provided by glowing rocks. The stone floor had colourful Persian rugs tastefully placed. A high plaster ceiling was painted with a rendition of Michelangelo’s ‘Creation of Adam’, depicting me as both Adam and God.
There was a comfy sofa in front of a large screen television that hung from one wall and an ornate grandfather clock ticked loudly in the corner. It was currently 10:08 PM. Another wall was a floor to ceiling bookshelf, stuffed with books of varying sizes. The third wall was covered with pictures and I could see at a glance that they were images from my life. The fourth wall had a thick riveted steel door on the right side, a full sized mirror on the left, and a computer workstation in the middle.
The picture wall was my first target. A few were quite large, nearly life sized, while others were tiny prints no larger than the palm of my hand. Scenes of my life were displayed in each one. The largest was me riding Horse with a shit-scared expression, shooting at a pack of wolves. Others were smaller, each with different frames. Some ornate gold or silver, others plain wood, a few wrapped in briars or barbed wire. Nanny Ramsey holding me as a young child. My dog Jean with a red ball in his mouth. My parents, screaming at me. I turned my attention to the books. Books are safe. Books don’t judge you.
The sweet, musty scent of a used book store filled my nostrils as I drew close to the honey coloured shelves. Hundreds of volumes filled the wall from floor to ceiling, with a ladder that could be rolled along a rail to access the top. I smiled at the sight. I had always wanted a library like this. I pulled a book at random and read the title, “Confused Fantasies about Joseph Harris, part XXIV of the Middle School Years”.
I slid the book back onto the shelf. Let’s see what’s on TV.
The remote was a slim, futuristic looking affair with a minimum of buttons. I pointed it at the television and moments later the huge screen came to life and presented me with a simple menu for movies, divided into six categories: Happy, Surprised, Afraid, Disgusted, Angry, and Sad. I scrolled through the offerings for a minute, reading the titles and reviews about the movies of my life. It really bothered me that there were so few selections in the Happy section.
The number of Sad movies increased by one.
I walked over to the mirror and noticed there was a small sticky note pasted to it. “Astral Realm. Experienced users only.” I shoved the note in my pocket and stared at my image. Sturdy black boots, black denim jeans and shirt with mother-of-pearl buttons, deep brown gun belt slung at my hip, red bandanna and black felt hat. All I needed was a pencil moustache and I would look like the stereotypical villain in any spaghetti western. At that very moment I decided to grow out a goatee. I’d rather be mistaken for a bad guy than a victim.
So how does this astral realm thing work?
The mirror appeared to be nothing more than a mirror. It was cold, smooth glass surrounded by a wrought iron frame, and reflected my image. I didn’t necessarily want to go walking into danger, but I wanted to know how it worked. I pushed and prodded the glass in frustration until I noticed my image grinning at me. I jumped back in surprise and it doubled over in silent laughter.
“Hilarious, dude. You got me,” I huffed. “So how do I get in?”
My mirror-self tipped his hat and stepped to side.
I reached up to the mirror again and my hand passed through, vanishing as if cut off. Okay, just a quick peek and we’ll explore the rest of the room. I stepped through and the world shifted around me. I was standing back at the campsite. My body was insubstantial as a ghost and the tarp was a wisp of substance running straight through me. Non living things don’t seem to have much presence in this realm. Glancing down, I saw my sleeping body rolled up in the blankets, a thin silver thread running from it to me, and another thread running to Horse.
Looking around, I surveyed the campsite. My astral vision seemed to be on and had an unlimited range. I could see the life all around me, the distant forest was a sea of greenish-gold, grasses and brush nearby glowed with spectral light. Tiny ghost insects scurried while ghost mice nibbled at whatever ghost mice nibble on. Ghost seeds and ghost insects, I suppose. I turned my attention overhead and gaped at the sight of a monstrous serpentine spirit flying through the inky void. I dropped back through the tent and rolled inside my body. That was plenty enough for now.
I rolled through the mirror and landed flat on my back, staring at the fresco on the ceiling. Vinnie-God winked at me and Vinnie-Adam grinned. Climbing to my knees, I brushed non-existent dust from my trousers and watched mirror-me doubled over in soundless laughter.
“Hey, laughing-boy!” I yelled at him. “You’re like the guardian or something, right? You got it covered?”
Mirror-me stood and saluted with a smile, then gave me two thumbs up. A moment later, his face took on a serious expression and he wriggled his right hand in the ‘maybe’ motion. Then he pointed at me, tapped his wrist, and then a finger to his head.
It all depends on how fast I learn stuff, I guess.
Two thumbs up and a winning smile reflected back to me.
A large cork board was mounted to the wall over the computer and a small note was pinned to it. “Note to self: Don’t fuck with the Elvish womens.”
The computer screen featured a screensaver of me as Vitruvian Man doing callisthenics over the words ‘HumanOS’. I tapped the spacebar and was rewarded with the sound of powerful fans kicking to life as the computer emerged from sleep mode and prompted me for a password. Should I assume it’s the same as the password on the computer I pawned in my previous life?
Password: *******esi
I was rewarded with a sweet R&M desktop and a couple of icons. System, NeuralNet, My-Tunes, My-Movies, My-Office.
System was just what I expected, lots of .dna files and other confusing scariness that allowed me to tweak my physical body and mental state. My-Tunes was a collection of every song I’d ever heard and My-Movies was a collection of every movie I’d ever seen. Not that I’m complaining, but it would have been nice to have “My-Games” so I could play RDR. My-Office was a clone of the popular software by a similar name. I have no idea what I’ll ever need a spreadsheet for in this world.
NuralNet opened up a search engine called Me-Seeks, featuring a familiar blue guy.
I typed in “beer” and several thousand results were displayed, anything I’d ever read, heard, or watched about beer, including how to make it. This right here made the price of admission totally worth it, access to an exact copy of everything I’d ever read, and I was a voracious reader. Sadly, most of the stuff I read was futurology — solar panels, electronics, biotech advancements, quantum computing. The material for steam engines, blacksmithing, farming and the like, were slim pickings. That’s okay though, I could still reproduce the Gutenberg press, the cotton gin, simple internal combustion engines, and basic batteries along with some sketchy knowledge of metal alloys, acids, bases, and other things I had read over the years. All that wasted time watching “How Things Work” was finally going to pay off. I copied a few likely money makers to My-Office, saved the file, and exported to my Notes, just in case they didn’t exist on Aerth.
A popup covered the screen.

Apparently I could upgrade myself, which reduced the cost of using my Utilities while providing other minor benefits. My Utilities would level up as I used them, which would increase their battery cost, so if I didn’t keep pace with an update to the OS they could become prohibitively expensive to operate.
Stupid pay-to-win world.
So, do I pay 2000 credits for version 2.0 or 5000 credits for version 3.0?
I selected version 3.0 and klicked [Install]. After watching it download the update, it popped up another screen that asked if I wanted to update now, or wait until Midnight for the mandatory update.
I selected [No] just as the grandfather clock chimed 10:30 PM. I wondered if time ran slower in here, because it seemed like I had spent a lot more time on the computer than 15 minutes. Walking over to the imposing steel door, I noticed a bronze key with a thin chain in the lock. There was another sticky note on the door. “Subconscious. Please keep the key with you at all times.”
That’s not scary at all, is it?
I unlocked the door with a loud clunk and pulled it open to reveal a bedroom straight out of some royal castle. I could tell immediately that it had seen better days. The tapestries on the wall were frayed and fading. The canopy over the bed had a few holes in it. A thin layer of dust covered the mantle of a small fireplace set into the wall. There was a window letting in bright sunlight and I moved over to look outside.
I was on the third floor of a keep surrounded by the walls and turrets of a modest castle. A castle that had fallen into serious disrepair. Did this represent the state of my inner mind? One tower was shattered and the curtain wall under it damaged. The lower bailey was full of litter. I could see a few soldiers walking around the allure, keeping watch.
I have people in my subconscious?
Someone behind me cleared their throat.
Whirling, I discovered a familiar old man standing in the door of the bedroom. What was left of his hair formed a white halo around his head, his face was unshaven and covered with several days of growth. He was dressed like a poor and tattered manservant, but carried himself with a dignified air.
“Woodhouse?”
“It’s nice to see the master at home,” He said with a proper English accent. “There are many matters that require the master’s attention.”
“Uh, sure,” I said, hanging the key around my neck and tucking it in my shirt. “And who are you again?”
“Your personal manservant, of course” he said with a slight bow. Walking over to the steel door, he pulled it closed and it locked with a solid thunk. “Master should always keep his inner sanctum closed. One never knows if something nasty will creep in.”
“Thank you, uh, Woodhouse. I’ll remember that,” I said, rubbing the back of my neck. “So what needs tending and how do things work around here?”
He smiled and beckoned me with a white gloved hand. “If master would be so kind as to follow me, I’ll introduce him to the staff and explain the duties and obligations of his domain.”
I’m 99.9% certain that everyone here is just me wearing a mask, so I shrugged and followed Woodhouse out of the bedroom and into the rest of my subconscious.
Five minutes later I was on the ground floor and seated on a shabby throne with the cast of a popular —and probably very copyright protected— animation in front of me. Woodhouse was the head butler and my personal manservant. Pam was the cook and demanded that I start importing sugar and alcohol before she was shushed by Woodhouse. Carol was a maid. Krieger was chancellor and Cyril was the steward. Archer and Lana were in charge of security. Ray was the marshal in charge of everything from the stables to the blacksmith.
I stared in disbelief at the motley crew kneeling in front of me. No wonder my inner mind was in such shambles. I was overcome with an irrational sense of anger at myself.
“Arright, listen up,” I barked, my voice echoing around the room. “I swear to God that I will fire every single one of you and hire circus clowns to replace you if you keep fucking things up. No joke. Circus clowns, got it?”
I ran a hand over my face as Ray pissed himself. “The only reason I’m not putting a boot in your asses right now is because I realise that you’re aspects of me, and the people you represent are pretty damn good at their jobs when they give enough of a shit to actually do them. As a team, you’re dysfunctionally fantastic and always seem to come out ahead no matter the odds.”
Heaving a sigh, I continued. “Things have changed and I need to get my shit together. I’m going to need every one of you to pull your weight and help me help you. Get back to your duties, I’ll meet you one on one later.”
My subconscious caretakers scurried out of the room.
“I’ll have one of the maids tend to the piss,” Woodhouse assured me.
“Never mind that,” I snapped. “I honestly had no idea my mind was such a shit show. I’m very disappointed in myself.” I pictured the Angry, Sad, and Disgusted counters on my personal movies clicking up. “Show me what needs to be done and let’s get started.”
During Woodhouse’s walking tour, everything clicked into place. This was some altered version of Bodiam castle, a location that was on my bucket list of places to visit. The royal council room, located behind the throne room, contained a “living” tapestry on the wall that showed the castle and surrounding land in real time. The castle was located in the middle of a small lake, and a single wood bridge led to the mainland. A small town surrounded the lake and a wall encircled the town. Outside the wall, the land was an irregular patchwork of forest and field, with a stinking swamp to the south. The entire “kingdom” was maybe ten miles across, surrounded by impassable mountains with innumerable creeks that fed the lake which drained into the southern swamp.
“Zombies are the problem, sir.” Woodhouse said, as I surveyed the living tapestry of my mental domain.
“Zombies?” I prompted.
“Yes sir, Zombies” Woodhouse continued. “Nasty bitey things that come in from the mountains and harass the peasants. They’ve gotten especially worse over the last few months. The soldiers do what they can, but they seem to have lost all motivation. Probably because they haven’t been paid.”
“And who pays them?”
“Typically chancellor Krieger is in charge of financial matters, although Steward Figgis has taken over the duty, sir.”
“Then let’s make Figgis our first stop.”
“Very good, sir.”
The office of the steward was run by Cyril Figgis, who managed the kingdom in my absence. It was overflowing with paperwork and charts, books and scrolls piled high on every flat surface. Cyril was desperately attempting to tidy things when Woodhouse and I walked in.
“Yo..you..your majesty,” Cyril stuttered, bowing low. Scrolls fell from his overloaded arms, spilling across the floor. He dropped to his knees and scrambled to gather them up. “I didn’t expect you to visit so soon. Please forgive the mess, housekeeping has been slacking…”
This was the guy who ran things while I was conscious.
“Shut up, Cyril” I said. “You’re responsible for everything in this office. That includes keeping it organised and tidy.”
“Y..yes milord.”
“It’s my understanding that you’re in charge of making sure everyone gets paid. So why aren’t we paying people?” I asked.
“We’re nearly out of Fuks, your majesty. I’ve been saving them for emergencies.”
“Fucks?”
“Fuks,” Cyril explained, pushing a pile of books off a large chest and opening it. Reaching inside he pulled out two small bags and emptied them on top of his cluttered desk. “Gold and Silver Fuks, the currency of the kingdom. I can’t maintain the kingdom when I have no Fuks to give.”
Behold the subconscious kingdom of Vincent J. Carter, it runs on Fuks.
“So how do I get more fuks?” I asked, examining one of the coins. It had an image of me on one side and symbol on the other that could be interpreted as “peace among worlds”.
“You kill the zombies, your majesty.”
Of course I do.
Woodhouse and I left Cyril’s office and headed towards the office of the chancellor where Krieger worked. It seemed that Cyril took over financial matters when Krieger became erratic and proposed luring all the zombies into the city and setting it on fire. Not sure how that corresponds to my own self-destructive behaviour, but I’ve had some dark thoughts over the last couple of months and I’m sure they’re reflected here.
Krieger’s office was much neater in comparison to Cyril’s, but it wasn’t by much. Shelves lined the walls and were filled with an array of questionable items, including a still snapping zombie head in a jar. While the office of the chancellor was supposed to be in charge of financial matters, it looked more like a dodgy rummage sale.
Krieger was launching sword blades at a pig carcass when we walked in.
“What exactly are you doing?” I asked, standing in the doorway.
“Hm? Oh, your majesty!” he said, turning around and bowing deeply. “I’m testing a new invention. It’s a spring loaded hilt that shoots sword blades. Very useful for our soldiers.”
“Stupidest idea ever,” I snapped. “I hate everything about it.”
“Okay,” Krieger said, tossing the hilt into a nearby pile of junk. “But don’t blame me when you need to shoot a sword at a zombie and don’t have one.”
“So why aren’t you managing the financial affairs? Collecting taxes, paying people, stuff like that?”
“Because the population has declined so much none of that matters?”
“What do you mean?”
“Wellll, the population represents things you care about,” Krieger said, going into lecture mode. “And the zombies and other monsters are real or imagined problems in your way. Since you don’t care about too many things the population has shrunk to just what’s needed to keep everything running on the bare minimum of fuks. And since you don’t seem to have any long or short term goals, there’s no need to kill off the zombies and get more fuks. Everything is fine just the way it is.”
“No, it’s not Krieger” I said, grinding my teeth. “My mind is in a shambles. It’s a joke. I want it fixed. No, I want it better than fixed. I want it improved.”
“Oh! I’ve got just the thing for that!” He said, digging around in his pockets, “It’s a spring-loaded hilt that shoots swords!”
Pam and Cheryl were hanging out a gallery window jeering at Archer and Lana sparring in the inner courtyard.
“What the hell are you doing!” I snapped
They whirled in surprise and then dropped into deep curtseys.
“Your majesty!”
I took a deep breath, trying to regain my centre. “Get to work cleaning this place up. Find a room, clean it, and move on to the next. Start with my bedroom, then the throne room and the council chamber, then everything else.”
Cheryl spoke up. “Can’t do it. We got no fuks to clean with.”
“You need fuks to clean?”
“Gotta buy stuff,” Pam said. “Cleaning supplies, food. You wanna eat, you’re gonna have to spend some fuks.”
“Talk to Cyril,” I ordered. “Tell him I said to get you supplied.”
They ran off in the direction of the stewards office.
I watched Archer and Lana bashing each other enthusiastically through the window.
Several minutes later the sparring couple stopped and bowed when Woodhouse and I stepped into the inner courtyard.
“Your majesty”
“My liege”
“Enough,” I said. “If you have enough energy to smash each other, you have enough energy to smash zombies. Tell me what I need to know so I can start gathering fuks.”
Archer shrugged and spoke first. “You just kill the zombies and other monsters. They drop fuks.”
“Anything special about the zombies?” I asked. “Are they fast? Do people get turned into zombies when bitten?”
“Nope,” Lana said, resting her wooden sword on her shoulder. “Most of them are slow shamblers and just need a good wack to the head to kill them.”
“Some are special,” Archer interjected. “Occasionally you’ll have some fast ones, or those that need holy water to kill. They’re just bad memories, figments of your personality that need to be eliminated. Some are worse than others.”
“The zombies are bad memories?” I asked, imagining all the bad memories that I had.
“Memories, thoughts, insecurities, metaphysical mumbo-jumbo,” Woodhouse supplied. “They are endless, but constant vigilance can keep them under control.”
“So let’s get started,” I said. “Lead the way.”
Lana and Archer lead me up to the parapet over the front gate where I looked over at the dozens of zombies milling about aimlessly in front of the entrance to my mind. Pulling out my gun, I began to pick them off, easy as shooting fish in a barrel. The crack of my spell pistol attracted more zombies and I dispatched them with ease until no more were left around the gate. As I fired each shot I could feel some sort of existential energy flowing from me, draining some hidden reserve.
“Gather up the Fuks,” I commanded. “And Lana?”
“Mi’lord?”
“There’s no excuse for this. From now on, I expect the walls to be clear of all zombies.”
“Yes mi’lord,” she said, giving me a small bow.
Turning to Archer, I shook my head. “You’re obviously my personal narcissism, so just try to stay out of Lana’s way, or better yet - try to kill more zombies than her. If you think you can.”
Archer scoffed. “No contest. I took top marks in sharpshooting.”
“That means I should expect to see results by tomorrow. I look forward to it.”
Archer looked panicked for a moment then smiled. “Sure, I can give you results.”
Turning back to Woodhouse I said “Show me what else need attending.”
Woodhouse led me through the town that represented my mind, pointing out each business that had fallen into disrepair, suggested others that needed improvements, and additions that would benefit me. In the distance, I could hear Lana and Archer shooting at the crowd of zombies and with each echoing shot I felt a tiny bit better about everything.

AITAH for refusing to let my 20 year old daughter have her car back after she drove drunk? May 22, 2024

Two days ago, my 20 yr old daughter drove drunk to get herself some food. I was working in the backyard and thought she was inside watching golf with her dad. When I realized she had driven after drinking that afternoon, I immediately got in my car, picked her up, and drove her home. She is supposed to be returning to college any day now to start an internship there and I am adamant that she cannot have the car anymore until she earns my trust back. She can fly back to college and once there take lyft, ubers, public transportation, whatever, just not her car, which is actually NOT HER CAR AS IT WAS PURCHASED FOR HER BY HER DAD.

Problem is that her dad disagrees with me and wants her to have the car back. This is the same guy who called her while she was out driving drunk and all he did was tell her to "get home safely". He'd been drinking that afternoon and was also in no condition to drive.

She says she doesn't really remember what she said in the car after I picked her up, further indication as to her level of intoxication. AITAH for fighting her dad to not let her take her car back to college after this?

Update (in the same post)

Behind my back, he found her keys, helped her pack the car and tried to get her on the road before I got home from work. My Ring doorbell kept alerting me so I eventually saw what was going on. I rushed home from work, blocked her car with my suv, and called the cops. After him trying desperately but failing to get her car past my suv, he jumps into my car and fought with me to turn it off, hurting my arm in the process. He gained more control of my truck than I had and she was able to get by me. The cops were too late and off she went, 6 hours away to college, with her car.

I wasn't seriously injured so I declined to press charges against him but I told him to leave, and that our marriage is over.

She's planning to go to AA, therapy, group meetings, get an accountability partner, a breathalyzer and an ignition interlock. I hope she does all those things. I just wanted her to do them without her car bc I don't trust her.

Commenter:
NTA, your husband is enabling some horrible decisions here

OOP:
100% agree

Commenter:
Really your husband thinks it’s ok to give your daughter her car back after showing she will drive drunk to get food, let alone parties every weekend at school? I would also make her take one of the courses the courts make drunk drivers take. Husband is a jack off and my guess at that age was driving drunk.

OOP replied:
Agreed. And and he still does at age 58. In fact, he's golfing tonight with his golf buddies and, more often than not, he drives home drunk. No wonder where my daughter gets it. For this and many other reasons, I'm done with this marriage.

UPDATE: AITAH for refusing to let my 20 year old daughter have her car back after she drove drunk? May 24, 2024

To clarify, it's not HER car. She does not own the car. It was purchased using mine and her dad's finances. Her dad's name is on the title. (Why doesn't reddit allow title editing?)

Also, this is part 2.

Behind my back, her dad (stbx) found her keys, helped her pack the car and tried to get her on the road before I got home from work. My Ring doorbell kept alerting me so I eventually saw what was going on. I rushed home from work, blocked her car with my suv, and called the cops. Before they could get there, he jumps into my car, fights me to turn off my car and was able to prevent me from blocking her. My arm got scraped in the process of him fighting to turn off my car. Ultimately he overpowered me and she was able to drive off. The cops were too late and off she went, 6 hours away to college, with her car.

I wasn't really injured so I declined to press charges against him but I demanded that he leave, and told him that our marriage is over. He's now staying elsewhere for an indefinite period of time.

She's planning to go to AA, therapy, group meetings, get an accountability partner, a breathalyzer and an ignition interlock. I hope she does all those things. I just wanted her to do them without her car bc I don't trust her.

Sadly, her dad and I are not on the same page. I feel incredibly betrayed by him for doing all this behind my back, for not communicating with me about his intentions to give her the car back, and for letting her have the car back despite all the evidence showing that she can't be trusted with it.

He says I'm overreacting, that they have a plan and that he trusts her. I don't. I think he's a coward and I pray that his cowardice and stupidity doesn't get her or anyone else killed.

Also wondering how to go about trying to stop someone from driving drunk when you're not physically with the potential drunk driver. Do the police actually do anything about it if you call them?

Commenter:
Did you tell the police your concerns about her drink driving?

OOP replied:
Yes

Commenter:
If they documented it properly that may help with any liability you have

Commenter:
I’m sorry. She’s not likely to go to AA, therapy, group meetings, nor to get an accountability partner, a breathalyzer, or an ignition interlock. That’s quite a list of promises she made. Since her father enabled her by giving her the car, there is nothing you can do to keep her safe.
I urge you to contact www.Al-Anon.org for yourself. They provide help and support to the loved ones of problem drinkers and you can find many people who have been in your situation.

Another Commenter replied:
Also interlock devices are EXPENSIVE and have a monthly fee. No way she's going to be the college girl with a blow and go willingly.

Commenter:
NTA. File separation now so that you can show you are not responsible for her having a car. It may keep you from being part of the lawsuit when she kills someone.

Another Commenter replied:
And ask for that car in the divorce or, if it’s the third car owned (you each have your own), demand it be it be sold with the explanation of why to the judge/court. Make sure to take in the incident report from the police for the proceedings, too. Get it legally documented!
If there’s a health and wellness office at the college, notify them. Cover your bases to try and keep her from making this bad decision.
Edited to ask: Who gave her alcohol while under your roof? That will need to be clearly laid out in the incident report and your divorce proceedings.
Take her off your vehicle insurance and force her to get her own? In this economy, you don’t need that type of insurance rate (it can follow you to your own insurance if you don’t remove her before an incident happens).

Another update: AITAH for not wanting my daughter to have a car after she drove drunk? May 26, 2024

To clarify, it's not HER car. She does not own the car. It was purchased using mine and her dad's finances. Her dad's name is on the title. It's a marital asset.

This is part 3.

To summarize, last Sunday, my daughter drove drunk. Yes, drunk. Hammered. She's on our home security footage slurring her words, telling her dad she shouldn't go get him another beer bc she's an alcoholic, she's bumping into things, being obnoxious with her brother and eventually goes out the front door, getting in to the car she drives, and driving off to get food for herself.

I was working in the backyard and thought she was watching golf with her dad. When I learned what she'd done and where she was, I picked her up and brought her home. Fast forward to Thursday.

Her dad and I were supposed to come up with a plan about letting her have the car back when she went back to college. I was adamant that she shouldn't. He seemed uncertain. She was desperate to have it and, while I was at work, her dad gave in to her. They hurried to pack her stuff and sneak her off to college but when I became aware of what was going on, I left work and got home asap to try to stop her. Despite my (not so stellar) attempts to prevent her from driving off, she did. I was furious with my now stbx and told him to leave. He's been out of the house since. Again, more details are in my previous posts but that's where things stand today.

I guess I just want to give more details as to why I reacted the way I did and why I told my stbx to leave that day.

5 months ago my daughter rolled her car and ended up stuck in some trees next to a creek. Supposedly she hadn't been drinking that morning, but had been the night before. While still trapped in the car, she crawled to the back seat to throw her bottle of (not quite empty) booze out the window. Obviously she could've been killed but, thank God, only got a few scratches. Her car was totaled. I felt we should wait for a bit before getting her another one to let the gravity of the situation sink in, but her dad disregarded my wishes, gave in to her and less than 2 weeks later she had another car.

I still don't know what the right thing was to do but I know his complete disregard for what I want in terms of children's well-being is absolutely intolerable to me anymore. We're not dealing with playdates or homework or curfew anymore. These are life or death situations now and we should do everything we can to try to be on the same page. Not going behind each other backs to get our own way.

This time, though, I thought my stbx was leaning towards not letting her have the car to take back to college. He said we would discuss it further and try to agree on a plan. That never happened. Instead, they went behind my back, quickly packed the car, and off she went.

Maybe I am the AH. Maybe I handled it all wrong. All I can say is that I love my daughter and am terrified of losing her, one way or another, to alcohol. I can't stop her from drinking but I was hoping to at least stop her from driving when she does drink and since we're 6 hrs away from each other, keeping the car seems the only surefire way to do that. Also, she admitted to me this wasn't the first time she's driven drunk. Thx to my stbx, it prolly won't be the last.

My marriage has been dying for years. I'm not divorcing him over this one incident. This was just the last straw. No relationship can survive chronic lying, zero respect, zero intimacy, zero connection and chronic loneliness. I prolly stayed longer than I should have.

Commenter:
NTA. You are dealing with 2 alcoholics. You’ve done the right things. They have to want to get sober, you can’t make them but you can avoid enabling them. Consider joining Alon anon. I wish you the best

Commenter:
Well, now that I'm hearing part 3, I really feel compelled to share the abbreviated story of what happened to my mom's boyfriend. He purchased, insured, and registered a vehicle for his 20 year old daughter. One night, she was driving home from work tired and got into an accident. She paralyzed the man she hit. Because the vehicle was in her father's name, he's the one who got sued. He lost, and him and his insurance are on the hook for millions of dollars to provide life-long care for the man his daughter almost killed. The only person who walked away from the whole thing with only a traffic ticket or two was his daughter, the one who caused it all. I'm sure if she'd been drunk and not tired, that would have been different, but her father still would have been on the hook financially. Get your name fully disconnected from that car or repossess it immediately.

OOP replied:
Omg. Thank you for sharing this. I'm going to send it to my daughter and stbx.
Commenter:
NTA you need to call your insurance company & see if you can get a separate policy for just you. Leave your stbx & daughter on the current policy. Until the divorce is final maybe an umbrella policy is a good idea too. You don’t want to lose everything if either one gets in an accident & kills someone.

Commenter:
Sorry you're going thru all this. Your daughter will not get the ignition interlock. They are very expensive, and I doubt she will do the AA. Your husband is a complete AH for the way he sweeps her drinking problem under the rug.

Another Commenter replied:
I suspect he excuses the drunk driving because he doesn't want to have an honest conversation with himself about his own drinking problem. Much easier to stick his head in the sand and insist everything is fine.

Commenter:
NTA When you talk to your divorce lawyer, ask about how you can best distance yourself from any liability with your daughter and husband if they cause another accident or kill someone while drinking and driving.
It may be you will have to remove yourself from their insurance policy like others have said. If you do that, let the insurance company know exactly why and give them any dates after that accident your daughter was in where you know she was drinking.
If you can, get that doorbell cam footage saved as well. And from her driving off and your husband helping her.

Finally, some really comprehensive advice from this Commenter:
NTA
You've done the best you can. Now it's time to protect yourself. Your daughter is an adult. You cannot fix her. She's going to have to do that herself. I'm very sorry.
Get a good lawyer and start the divorce.
• It's absolutely imperative that you get your husband and daughter on a separate auto insurance policy for that vehicle.
• Have your lawyer send your STBX and your daughter a cease and desist letter, formally and in writing, rescinding your permission for her to drive the vehicle at any time.
• You also need to get a serious umbrella policy. Serious. As long as your daughter is driving a vehicle you own, she is endangering your entire financial well-being.
• As part of the divorce, you should either force the sale of the car, force her to buy it, or force your husband to buy out your share from you. Trust me, you don't want to own a vehicle that she is using to drive drunk.
• Separate your finances and insurance right away.
• Change all your passwords
I'm so sorry, OP. This is a tragic situation, but you need to move forward with protecting yourself and your assets. If she drives drunk and kills or maims someone in a car you own, it could ruin you.
Best of luck to you, OP.

THUNDER BAY, ON / ACCESSWIRE / May 30, 2024 / Clean Air Metals Inc. ("Clean Air Metals," "Clean Air" or the "Company") (TSXV:AIR);(OTCQB:CLRMF);(FRA:CKU) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mike Garbutt as its new President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) effective July 1, 2024. Mr. Garbutt, a seasoned mining professional with a record of success, has significantly contributed to the Company's strategic vision and development as COO over the past few years. Mike has the ideal skillset to lead the Company through potential asset acquisitions, resource expansion plans, and, ultimately, a mine development project.
"Succession planning has been at the forefront of our minds since Mike joined Clean Air Metals 2 years ago," said Jim Gallagher, outgoing CEO and returning Board Chair. "Mike's leadership and involvement, particularly in the due diligence review of other PGE assets in Northwestern Ontario, have been invaluable. He has demonstrated that he is uniquely qualified to carry forward our strategic initiatives."
Mr. Garbutt's tenure as President and CEO comes at a crucial juncture for Clean Air Metals, as the Company demonstrates its resilience in the face of industry headwinds. Despite these challenges, Clean Air Metals has maintained a strong cash position, honed its project targeting, and strategically planned for resource base expansion through the potential acquisitions of other PGE assets.
"Being appointed CEO of Clean Air Metals is a tremendous honour," said Mike Garbutt. "I am excited to lead this exceptional team as we execute our strategy, capitalize on the opportunities ahead and create value for our shareholders. With Jim's continued support on the Board, alongside our recent additions of Dr. Lionnel Djon as VP of Exploration and Dr. David Peck to the Board of Directors, I am confident that we have one of the strongest teams in the junior sector."
Clean Air Metals remains steadfast in its strategic focus on PGEs with associated copper exploration in Northern Ontario, leveraging the region's unique potential and scarcity of active exploration efforts. With an ongoing commitment to technical innovation and exploration excellence, the Company is well-positioned to seize the opportunities presented by the impending commodities super cycle, further enhancing its competitive edge.
"I am pleased to be able to hand the reins to Mike after a challenging year during which we redefined the Company's strategy and strengthened the team," said Jim Gallagher. "I started my mining career as a labourer at INCO's Levack mine 47 years ago. It is time for me to step back from Clean Air's day-to-day activities, but I'll remain on the Board of Directors supporting Mike and the rest of the team as they execute the strategy moving forward. In my long career, I have lived through several metal price super cycles and truly believe that with the low investment environment over the last few years combined with the Green Energy revolution and the desperate need for Critical Metals, we are on the cusp of one of the greatest metal cycles of recent times. I believe Clean Air Metals is well poised to take full advantage of the upcoming super cycle."
Jim Gallagher will assume the role of Non-executive Chair of the Board of Directors starting July 1, 2024. He replaces Dean Chambers, who will continue his board roles as Chair of the Audit and Governance, Nominating and Compensation committees. We thank Dean for serving as Chair of the Board over the last year.
About Jim Gallagher, PEng. Jim Gallagher, a mining engineer and experienced executive, was the CEO of North American Palladium from 2015 to 2019. He was responsible for the Company's operational and financial turnaround and eventual sale to Impala Platinum of South Africa for just under C$1 Billion. Jim served as Executive Chair of Clean Air Metals when the Company began to trade on the TSX Venture Exchange in early 2020. He assumed the role of CEO in June 2023.
About Mike Garbutt, PEng. MBA Mr. Garbutt is a professional mining engineer with over 25 years of experience in mine operations, projects, and engineering. He has strong business acumen, has led successful mine operations, transitioned capital projects to operations, and has undertaken numerous project studies. He joined Clean Air Metals in May 2022 as its Chief Operating Officer. He was previously Deputy General Manager for IAMGOLD's Côté Gold Project, Senior Principal and Mining Sector Leader at Stantec Consulting, and General Manager of Sudbury Operations at KGHM. He held several senior technical and operating roles during a 14-year career at Glencore. Mr. Garbutt holds an MBA from Laurentian University and serves on select non-profit boards.

2024.05.31 19:22 Santimoca7 Thinking of getting a 28L Thule Accent for regular business travel to the US

Hi Everyone!
I'm a pretty regular travel to the US for business (from South America) and I REALLY need to upgrade my packing game because last time it was madness and I almost lost a very valuable work item due to it so I decided to change my 10yo small generic backpack.
Due to money concerns I never travel with anything else than what the airlines classify personal item as luggage (say a backpack).
Good thing is I only stay for tops, 6 days and don't need to pack more than three jeans, underwear, socks and tshirts for them, additionaly I need to carry my 14" Macbook pro (in it's sleeve), a slurry of cables and a couple of safety gloves and glasses, plus a chunky dossier I collect in the US and need to take back home.
Do you guys think a Thule Accent with 28L capacity is enough? I could pack all of that stuff (except a laptop so I ended up asking for loans there and it was horrible) in my old backpack but it caused me severe issues when packing and had to juggle stuff around.
Plus I need it to be very rugged and durable while being comfortable to have on my back all day, because my job requires me to visit places with a lot of jagged metal, dust and stuff.
Plus, I had a slight google search and saw its marginally bigger than the allowed size for a lot of airline's guidelines, do you guys think they'll be strict with that?
I don't have the biggest budget ever and saw it on sale at Amazon (110 USD) with free shipping to my country, and it's still a little bit over what I'd like to spend (if I can get away with 80 bucks I will), any extra recommendations are very welcome.
Thanks!

2024.05.31 10:58 ExactAbroad17 Trip Report - May 2024 - Family of 4

Hello reddit community,
We have just returned from a fantastic 16-day trip to Japan. Here is our experience, I hope it helps some of you with planning your trip!
Places visited
· Osaka
· Nara
· Hiroshima
· Miyajima
· Himeji
· Kanazawa
· Takayama
· Tokyo
About us
Myself (36yr F), husband (39yr M), and our kids (10 yr old daughter & 7yr old son) from Melbourne, Australia.
Likes
beautiful nature, exploring new areas, shopping, anime (husband), Pokemon (kids & husband), Japanese food and culture. We went to Japan 10 years ago and visited Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, Nara, & Hakone, so this time we wanted to return to some of our favourite places and experience some new ones. I know this is an unpopular opinion but Kyoto was actually our least favourite place of our last trip, so we opted to skip Kyoto for this one.
May weather
We specifically chose to travel in May as we wanted to avoid the crazy crowds in the peak times and have mild weather. The weather while we were there was average 21-28 degrees celsius, perfect t-shirt and shorts weather. In 16 days we had only 3 days with rain (2 days of off and on drizzle in Takayama, and 1 day of torrential rain in Osaka).
Packing
We wanted to pack light (no suitcases, because there are so many stairs and finding lifts is time consuming and involves a lot more steps). We took 4 x backpacks (1 each) and 2 x hiking back packs (for all our clothes). Packed clothes for 5 days. I packed 2 x jumpers and 2 x pants each, but 1 each would have been fine. 1 pair of good runners each. kids took 1 teddy each. 3 of our hotels we had washing machines in our rooms, and the others had a laundry room with coin machines. I did washing 3 times. Clothing wise, Japanese people dress very conservatively, so we took that into consideration when packing. Especially because I live in activewear normally. I saw no one wearing activewear at all!
Flights
We flew from in and out of Osaka from Melbourne, which we got on sale for $575 AUD return each person
Transport
We travelled exclusively on public transport. Mostly trains, Shinkansen between major citites, trams and some buses. We found public transport to be easy to navigate, well signed in english also, and frequent. My husband broke his foot badly 1 year ago and still has issues with it, and with 2 kids in tow we always opted for getting on a train to get us closer to where we needed to be, even if it meant transferring train lines a few times. The IC cards come in super handy for this!!. We saved so many steps each day by doing this, and saved a lot of complaints from the kids about tired legs!
IC cards - My husband and I both downloaded Suica cards in our Apple wallets on our iPhone, its super easy to do and super easy to top up. Had no problems topping up with AMEX or Mastercard that was in our apple wallet. The only issue we had with the digital cards is that you chew through so much phone battery taking pictures and videos and using google maps there were many days we were stressed about our phones dying. So make sure you always take a power bank with you just in case.
Kids IC cards - You cant get digital kids IC cards, and our kids don't have their own phones either so I picked up 2 x kids ICOCA IC cards from the JR ticket office at Umeda station (osaka). Just make sure you have their passports with you. The kids fares are half the price of adults, so its worthwhile getting them for how much you use the trains. You can top up the cards at almost all ticket machines (cash only).
Transport passes - We purchased the JR West Kansai-Hiroshima area pass in advance online as this worked out cheaper for our itinerary than individual tickets. I picked up the pass from the JR ticket office at Kansai Airport station. Also purchased a 1 day Osaka-metro pass (820 yen for an adult) only on one day for moving around osaka alot. You can get them from any osaka-metro station ticket machine.
Shinkansen Tickets - I only booked our first shinkansen (Osaka - Hiroshima) in advance, online through JR west website, which i picked up at the airport station when we arrived. We booked most of the others either on the spot (No issues getting a seat), or through the Smart Ex app ( Tokyo - Osaka) We booked that one in the morning of the day we were travelling, and i'm glad we did as the train was almost full when we got on (5:47pm time).
Language
I know a little bit of Japanese ( from what i remember from learning Japanese in high school). My husband and the kids played on duolingo for a few months before hand. Most people in Osaka, Tokyo, and touristy places spoke a fair bit of english. But we tried to speak some Japanese where we could. We downloaded Google translate, and DeepL. The translation on DeepL was much better and a more accurate than google translate. The translate camera function is fantastic for shopping for food and working out how to use the washing machines etc. The Japanese people were always so happy when our kids spoke some japanese to them.
Advance bookings
Hotels - Some through booking .com and others direct to the hotel. We found the prices were mostly better when booking direct to the hotel
Universal Studios - 2 months before hand. we bought express passes and studio passes. i tried to purchase through the USJ website but had no luck with it accepting our credit cards. we tried AMEX, Visa, and Mastercard. gave up and purchased through Klook. Yes you can now select times for timed entries on Klook.
DisneySea - 1 month before. purchased through Disney site. nil issues.
TeamLab Planets - 2 months before, through official website
Sumo - We tried to get tickets to the sumo tournament for when we were in tokyo. We jumped online when the tickets were released, but the website crashed. After many many refreshes, when we finally got onto the site 1.5 hrs later, they were sold out for the days we could go :(
Food - Restaurants
We love good food, but don't fancy waiting in line for an hour to have an instagram hyped food. We made no bookings for restaurants, and just stopped when we saw something that looked good. It often involved a lot of walking as its difficult to get a spot for 4 people in some tiny restaurants. Street food was great! We used uber eats a few times from the hotel which was great for fussy kids, super quick and was reliable both times. the food was great too! Breakfast was mostly combini, yoghurt, smoothies, waffles. We found that department stores had great food halls (usually basement level) for takeaway with everything from sushi, salads, fried chicken, dumplings etc. A good option for groups with different tastes, affordable and a nice change from the combini food. Coffee almost everywhere was terrible.
HOTELS OSAKA - May 14 - APA Umeda-Eki tower. A pretty standard business hotel, small. location was ok, close enough to walk from umeda station. In hindsight, I should have just booked a room at the airport hotel. kids were absolutely exhausted from the 2am wake up in Melbourne with no sleep on the plane (too excited), our daughter was in tears at the airport from exhaustion. our son finally fell asleep on the train which meant i had to carry him (25kgs) and luggage through the station and to the hotel. we got to the hotel around 10pm. (approx $220 AUD 1 x night)
HIROSHIMA - May 15-16 - FAV HOTEL Hiroshima heiwa odori - Amazing! apartment style, great location, breakfast included. 2 x Queen beds in the room, washing machine and dryer. Would 100% stay here again if in Hiroshima. (approx $530 AUD 2 x nights)
KANAZAWA - May 17-18 - Tsukuyomi Chuodori . A Japanese style vacation rental house. location was ok, a short bus ride to the main area, or you could walk. very quiet residential area, actually had the best sleep here out of entire trip, although it was bright at 5:00am as there is only shoji screens for window coverings. very steep staircase to the top floor, probably not suitable for very young kids or older people. (approx $330 AUD 2 x nights)
TAKAYAMA - May 19-20 - FAV LUX Hida Takayama - great location. amazing apartment style 2 x queen beds + 2 x single bunk beds on top. Would 100% stay here again (approx $560 AUD 2 x nights)
TOKYO - May 21 - 25 - Mimaru Asakusa Station - location is 10/10!! literally next to the subway line, food, shopping on the door step, sensoji temple like 200mtrs away. Apartment style 1 x queen bed and 2 x single bunks. This may also be an unpopular opinion but you don't need to be near the Yamanote line in Tokyo. it was so easy to transfer to anywhere you want to go in Tokyo, the stations and different subway lines are so well signed and colour coded. I have stayed in Shinjuku and Tokyo station area before, and I would definitely stay in Asakusa again over those areas. (approx $1650 AUD 4 x nights)
OSAKA - May 26-30 - Randor suites Namba - Location was great! right next to a subway line, literally 3 doors down. Or a 950mtr walk to shinsaibashi. Was a whole apartment, huge for Japan. We shared this with my Sister in-law and her 2 boys (aged 10 and 12) who joined us in Tokyo for the last half of the trip. (approx $1450 AUD 4 x nights (our share about $800 AUD for 4 x nights)
BUDGET
We didn’t really set a specific budget as we had been saving for a while. All up in total, with absolutely everything ...flights, tickets, trains, food, accomm, shopping. It cost approx $16,000 AUD for a family of 4 people (1,600,000Yen). "Santa" got the kids new wallets and 10,000 yen each for xmas, so it was nice for them to work out what they wanted to spend their own money on.

DAY 1 - OSAKA - tues 14th May
12,221 steps
Flight from Melbourne - Osaka arrived 7pm
Through customs, baggage, JR tickets, got a 8:46pm (with 2 mins to spare) JR Haruka to Umeda (covered by the rail pass but you need a reserved ticket, which i got from the JR office when picking up the passes).

DAY 2 HIROSHIMA - wed 15th May
18,787 steps
I had booked a 1220 shinkansen from osaka to hiroshima. Which meant we had time for a restful slow morning ( only 1 hour time difference from Melbourne, so no issues with jet lag). We went to the Daimaru umeda and the pokemon centre, nintendo and some other shops, grabbed a bento box and on the shinkansen. We took our bags with us to the shops as we didn't want to trek back to the hotel.
An easy tram transfer and 600mtr walk to the hotel. We had a refresh at the hotel and then walked to the peace Museum. Entry is free for kids and 200Y for adults, a must if in Hiroshima! it was busy in some parts as we were there around 4pm but have never been somewhere with so many people and so much silence. Followed by a walk around the peace park and atomic bomb dome. You don’t need to be into war history to enjoy Hiroshima. The whole area has the most amazing peaceful vibe. If I lived in Japan, Hiroshima is where it would be! Dinner at Okonomi-mura. Delicious hiroshima style okonomiyaki. get there early, most places were sold out by 7pm.
DAY 3 MIYAJIMA DAY TRIP - thurs 16th May
23,589 steps
Opted to catch the tram to Miyajima ferry station, which was longer, but cheaper and meant we didn't need to transfer at the station, and also so we could see a bit more of the area out the window. you dont need to book the ferry in advance just get a ticket at the dock ( ours was covered by the JR area pass, still need to pay a 100Y tax for adults) ferry ride is about 10mins. We just walked through the streets poking in shops, eating some street food. The whole area is really beautiful and was busy but not over crowded. we wanted to ride the ropeway up to Mt Misen but when we got the the ropeway station it was closed due to strong winds. I was keen to go up so my hubby took the kids back into town and i did the 2.5km walk up the mountain to the look out. Do not attempt this unless you have a relative level of physical fitness, what starts as a nice meandering path following the river and waterfalls, quickly turns into 2km of stone steps up the mountain. it took me a bit over an hour to walk up and the view at the top is incredible. the trip down was much quicker, just be careful if you have bad knees. we left about 4:30 as we promised the kids we'd go to the pokemon centre. Went back to the hotel and got some uber eats for dinner, delicious ramen and gyoza
* Mine and my hubby's favourite day of the trip*
* Felt like we needed ½ to 1 extra day in the Hiroshima *
DAY 4 - TRAVEL TO KANAZAWA VIA HIMEJI - fri 17th May
12,993 steps
checked out of the hotel and took our luggage to 7-11 to transfer to our hotel in takayama 3 days later so that we could do our himeji and shirakawago stops on the way. we managed to stuff everything into 1 hiking pack and cost $25AUD to send. we kept 2 days of clothes with us in our backpacks. booked a shinkansen to himeji at the station immediately prior to travelling (covered by the pass). Walked around himeji castle, its beautiful. we didn't go inside as we were a bit pushed for time as we needed to check into our house by 7pm in kanazawa. but its worth the stop if its on your way. Our JR passes covered the trip to Tsuruga where we transferred to the shinkansen to kanazawa. We booked this on the spot and it was not busy. got to our house at 6:15pm, got some dinner recommendations from the house host and ordered through uber eats. hubby and i had curry kastu (kanazawa specialty) and got the kids some chicken and chips from a different place both delicious.

DAY 5 - KANAZAWA - sat 18th May
20,719 steps
We had lots of plans for the day, but our daughter was sick (vomiting) (she had a chest infection from when we left home) so we had aborted our mission and went back to the house, kids watched a movie on the ipads with hubby, and i went for a walk to the supermarket. I had fun browsing all the food for 1.5 hours. After lunch we went to Kenrokuen. The kids hated it, complained it was too hot and asked if we were ready to leave the whole time. it is a lovely large garden that is so well kept. However, we felt it lacked any real feeling (if that makes any sense). We had some obligatory gold leaf ice-cream at $10AUD each (Nothing to write home about, but of course its a good photo op). We skipped the market and the old district as our daughter was still feeling sick and hot, and opted for some shopping at kanazawa station. Of course pokemon centre. We enjoyed wandering the shops here for a few hours, got some happy pancakes, and dumplings on the top floor for dinner.
* side note, buses in kanazawa only take cash ( No IC cards, except the loop bus takes IC)
DAY 6 TRAVEL TO TAKAYAMA - Sun 19th May
15,910 steps
We got up early to get the first bus to Shirakawago around 8:00am. Although we didn't realise you need to reserve seats for this bus. I went to the counter and the first available bus was not until 1pm as the others were booked out. Also all the buses from Shirakawago to Takayama were booked out for the day. So we had to change plans and we jumped on a train to Toyama and then the limited express to Takayama. it was a 4min change over so we raced to the other platform and jumped in a non-reseved car. it was Packed, my son had to sit on my lap. The train ride is about 1.5 hours and absolutely stunning scenery. we arrived in Takayama, thinking we could tap our IC cards, but NO! No IC cards in takayama. luckily we paid the fare at the ticket window. however, we could only pay the Toyama to Takayama fare as they are different train line companies. Our IC cards, still said "In transit" so we had to fix that up when we went back to Toyama and pay the fare that we missed from not tapping off in Toyama. We learnt that it was super busy with tourists in Takayama so we booked our express train back to Toyama and the shinkansen to tokyo then at the station for the Tuesday. Checked into the hotel " our bags from hiroshima were there waiting" walked around the streets of takayama, grabbed some dinner at a soba place and headed back to the hotel for an early night.
DAY 7 TAKAYAMA - Mon 20th May
10,939 steps
Walked to the morning market, had some hida beef sushi (AMAZING), Midarashi dango (salty dango, YUM!) the most amazing criossants, poked in the shops around the old town area. kids fed the Koi and trout in the river. ate the most amazing cotton candy from a little shop. tasted sake from a brewery. Dinner at Suzuya (amazing, best meal of the trip, hida beef sukiyaki!!!) get there early! we were there at 5:10pm and already a big line in front of us. They won’t serve any one after 6:30pm. we booked a spa and sauna room for 7-9pm at the hotel so headed back to relax.
\* Saw lots of lovely souvenirs, engraved chopsticks, holders etc that in hindsight i should have bought in Takayama...but i thought i'll wait until Tokyo because it will be cheaper there... but I just didn't find many nice souvenir shops in Tokyo or Osaka, or we would have had to go out of the way to go there.
DAY 8 TRAVEL TO TOKYO - Tues 21st May
11,209 steps
Took the 11:07 limited express back to Toyama and the shinkansen to Ueno. We arrived at the hotel in Asakusa around 4pm. Dropped off bags at the hotel and headed to Sensoji, the area around the markets and temple was packed. We met up with my hubby’s sister and her 2 kids (they had the room next to us at the hotel) we walked down the street and found a teppanyaki okonomiyaki restaurant that could seat 7 people. The food was yummy, although they mustn’t have trusted us with the kids to cook our own food as they cooked it all for us downstairs and bought it up already cooked. We went to the sky tree for yet another pokemon store.

DAY 9 TOKYO – EAST SIDE – wed 22nd May
21,732 steps
Exploring and shopping Shibuya, Harajuku and Shinjuku. We went through Shibuya scramble, wandered the streets and shops of Shibuya and Harajuku, looking at shoes, cosmetics, gacha, anime. We had dinner at TGI Fridays in Harajuku, mainly because we could fit all 7 of us together and there was something on the menu that everyone would eat, the food is as you would expect (we found it difficult to find places suitable for everyone as my SIL is vegetarian, her son is super fussy (has autism, will not eat new foods), and our son is fussy too). We then jumped on the train and headed to Tokyo metropolitan government building in shinjuku, its great for the free observation deck and light show. The light show runs for 15mins every half hour from 7pm.

DAY 10 TOKYO – DISNEY SEA – Thurs 23rd May
31, 464 steps
One of the only days we set an alarm for the whole trip. Caught a train from Asakusa at 7:15am and arrived about 8:10, grabbed a coffee from starbucks there and headed in. The line was already massive. We got through the gates around 9:20. This is everything we did
Journey – first ride of the day went straight there 45min wait 9/10
Indiana Jones – 40th anniversary pass 9/10
Tower of terror – DPA – 8.5/10
Raging spirits – single rider line, 20 min wait 6/10
Soaring – DPA, 10/10 amazing, we don’t have anything like this in Australia so we were all blown away, even the kids
20,000 leagues under the sea – 40th anniversary pass 6/10
Toy story – DPA – 7/10
Jasmine’s flying carpet 5 min wait 4/10
Jumpin jelly fish 20 min wait, just the kids went on, they said it was boring
Flounder coaster – 10 min wait, surprisingly good for a little kid coaster, took my daughter on it again at the end of the day while the others went on Indiana again as she wouldn’t do any of the bigger rides
Believe sea of dreams - really lovely show, brought some of the Disney magic that is missing from the park.
Fireworks were cancelled due to wind. Overall we had the most amazing day!!! We got to do everything we wanted (with some careful pre-planning), the weather was perfect. The park is huge! We still didn’t see everything, with fantasy springs opening you definitely need 2 days to see everything. The park itself is so well done, every nook and cranny has amazing theming, but it does miss some of that “disney magic”. However, I think with the fantasy springs addition, the park will really have it all. The food is great…albeit very long lines. We ordered dinner through the Disney app and picked it up at a designated time which was a life saver.

DAY 11 – TOKYO – Fri 24th May
18,504 steps
We had a 10:30 timeslot booked for team-lab planets (knowing we didn’t want to have a too early start to the day following Disney) Team labs was lovely, hard to be blown away following the day at Disney but it was still a nice experience. It is certainly a photo opportunity rather than a place to actually learn about and appreciate the art. Either way everyone did enjoy it, and its much more affordable than the digital art galleries we have in Aus. We stopped at Ginza on the way back to go to a few shops and grabbed some lunch from the Matsuya department store food hall. The group split up here and hubby went to Akihabara with our nephew to look at anime stuff. I took our son shoe shopping in Ginza and then headed back to the hotel to do some washing. Took a nice walk along Sumida river and went to an early dinner at Ichiran ramen. It was yum, but not the best ramen of the trip. When the kids were in bed I headed to Don Quijote Asakusa alone to grab some things I wanted to try. It was so busy even at 11pm at night, don’t attempt with kids! the line for tax free registers took over 30mins to pay. I walked back through sensoji around 12:45am and it was so peaceful with no one else around.

DAY 12 TOKYO – TRAVEL TO OSAKA – Sat 25th May
16,914 steps
Last minute shopping in Tokyo. We split up, hubby took all the kids to some toy stores, and my SIL and I went shopping in Ginza. Originally I thought that Ginza was only high-end stores but found it to be the best place for shopping as they had all the major stores there, Uniqlo, Nike, Loft etc. 5:47 pm Shinkansen to Osaka. Arrived around 8:30pm to Osaka hotel.
\* an extra day in tokyo would have been nice*
DAY 13 - NARA DAY TRIP – Sun 26th May
21,335 steps
We went for a walk in Nara park, Todaji temple and walked through the streets of Nara. We went to Nara 10 years ago and loved it, but this time just didn’t feel the same. It was so busy, smelly (deer poo), and just felt nothing like we remembered. That was a bit of a disappointment for me and hubby, the kids still seemed to enjoy it as they liked patting and feeding the deer, and looking in the souvenir shops. Dotonbori for dinner

DAY 14 – OSAKA – Mon 27th May
21, 817 steps
Went to Kuramon market in the morning. I loved walking through here (and i don't eat seafood!!) there is so much amazing food here. definitely go with an empty stomach! Got some nice chopsticks. Explored Shinsaibashi, Dotonbori, Umeda, Pokemon store, shopping. Ate some street food. Tried to get an early night before USJ.

DAY 15 – UNIVERSAL STUDIOS – Tues 28th may
24,352 steps
Set the alarm early and arrived at USJ about 8:15am. We were through the gates by 8:30am. The weather forecast was rain all day….and boy did it RAIN ALL day. 110mm of rain it was horrendous! Hot tip, if it is expected to rain then definitely bring an umbrella for each person and a poncho! So much cheaper to buy in Osaka than the 1800Y they charge per person for a poncho at the park when you have no other options. They have really cool merch tho, way better than Disney.
We pre-purchased Express -pass 4 (variety fun) for our kids (they were too small for some of the coasters, or didn’t want to ride). The rest of us had express pass 7.
We had 10:20am timed entry for Harry potter and 5:40pm timed entry for Super Nintendo (although you didn’t need a timed entry on the day). When we got in hubby and my nephew raced over to Demon slayer (both big anime fans) and the rest of us went to Minions. We spent a lot of time in souvenir shops and seeing shows that were out of the rain. Flying dinosaur, Hollywood dream, & flight of hippogriff were all closed until 6:30pm when it finally stopped raining.
The rides we did
Minion Mayhem – waited 5 mins at the start of day, 6/10 due to motion sickness factor. My son would say 10/10 it was his fav ride. Went on again later in the day with our express passes
Freeze ray sliders – kids said 6/10, I didn’t ride. Got straight on.
Forbidden Journey – Used our express passes and got straight on, pretty cool ride 8/10. Hubby hated it due to motion sickness and vomited as soon as he got off. Kids loved it. I took the kids on again at 7:30pm and walked straight on.
Flight of the hippogriff – managed to use our express passes when this opened about 7pm. 6/10, its fun but really short, the best part is the view of the castle.
Flying dinosaur – express passes, waited 5 mins. 9.5/10. Amazing coaster.
Demon slayer - hubby said 9.5/10. Said it was pure fun the whole time. Coaster + VR. No motion sickness.
Mario Kart – Express passes. Waited max 10mins. 8/10
Yoshi – Kids used our express passes as it wasn’t included in theirs but we decided to go in the normal line and got on only a few cars behind them. A nice view of SNW but pretty boring otherwise 4/10
JAWS – 6/10. My daughters fav ride. She went on twice, 5 min wait all day.
SING – live show. Fun singing along to the songs.
MyHero 4D – in Japanese. Was still fun, and dry.
Had dinner at Hard Rock outside after we left.
*adults preferred Disney and the kids preferred universal (even in the torrential rain)*
*our son's favourite day (7yr old)
DAY 16 – OSAKA -Home – Wed 29th May
17,070 steps
Took our time in the morning packing and left luggage at the hotel. We stopped by shinsaibashi to grab a few things we wanted to buy, grabbed some lunch and then went to the Osaka aquarium. The aquarium is beautiful and the whole area near there is really nice too, they have a giant ferris wheel and legoland which we didn’t go to. Would have been nice to have a few more hours to explore the area. We headed back to the hotel at 4:30 to grab our luggage and got the Nankai airport express train to the airport. This was pretty straight forward and we managed to get a seat after a couple of stops. Flight home at 9:25pm
* Our daughters favourite day (10yr old) (besides the flight)
If you got this far, thanks for taking the time to read. I hope you enjoy your trip

2024.05.31 07:51 CreatureXXII I cannot find any legitimate "use" for a pickup truck. For most "utility" tasks that pickup trucks are marketed for, a cargo van can do just as well if not better.

I cannot find any legitimate
For real, I cannot find any legitimate use for pickup trucks that would justify their existence. A cargo van is better suited for most tasks that pickup trucks are marketed for. And don't get me started on the possibilities with a Bakfiet cargo bike.
The main inspiration for creating this post was that a few months ago, to clear up some junk in my grandma's garage (most of the junk is from my uncle who dumps it in her garage, family issues. Also he's pretty carbrained as well) we opted to rent a utility vehicle. There was a small discussion on whether we should rent a U-haul pickup truck or a U-haul cargo van. I said "Go for the van" and we did. Thank goodness we didn't make the wrong choice (this event happened before I got interested in urban planning and the negative effects of car dependency) because if we had chosen the pickup truck, it would have been a disaster. Needless to say, we got the van, loaded the junk in the back, and dropped it off at the dump. If we'd chosen the pickup truck, not only could we have not loaded it with as much junk as the pickup truck had an open truck bed, but everything would have flown out from the back causing a disaster. (Please forgive us for being ignorant, only recently did we find out just how impractical modern pickup trucks are).
This got me thinking. With all of the tasks that pickup trucks are marketed as being capable of, hauling cargo, utility vehicles, and vehicles for trades like plumbing, HVAC, etc. I would argue that a cargo van is just as capable if not better suited for these jobs and tasks than pickup trucks. Meaning that there's literally no reason for pickup trucks to exist, and if I had my way, (I don't care if I get called authoritarian, I have the right NOT to get run over by an oversized pickup truck. You do not have the right to endanger everyone else because of your fragile ego and small 🍆) the production of pickup trucks should be discontinued.
Using a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter as the basis for the cargo van, let's go down the list of potential "uses" for a pickup truck and see if the van is better suited.

Cargo:
While pickup trucks can carry stuff in the truck bed, the ironic thing is that the truck bed of modern pickup trucks is so small that nearly everything in the back sticks out, posing a risk for everyone else. A cargo van can not only fit cargo lengthwise but can also stack cargo up to the roof not to mention that it can fully enclose cargo, protecting it from the elements. When my family rented the cargo van, we stacked the junk all the way to the top. We were surprised by how much stuff we could fit in the back and side note, with our personal 2019 Honda Odyssey Minivan, we manage to fit and entire door inside of it. Try finding a modern pickup truck that can fit a door in the truck bed without it sticking out.
When it comes to transporting large amount of cargo securely, sorry pickups but trucks but this point goes to the van.

Versatility:
While a standard stock cargo van is suitable for most tasks, the nice thing about the Sprinter is that it can be customized to have more passengers seats, turning it into a pseudo shuttle bus. While I'm not sure about the specifics, I can theorize that the Sprinters can have removable seats, allowing the user to add/remove seats when needed. As for pickup trucks, the "crew cab" variants sacrifice cargo space for passengers, making it impractical as crew cab pickup trucks are neither good for passenger capacity or cargo. It tries to do both but fails, whereas the cargo van can do both tasks/swap between the two (cargo and passengers) with ease.

Pickup Truck: 0
Pedestrain Safety:
While neither vehicle has the best visibility or a low hood design, the Sprinter cargo van is slightly better as it's hood is short and angled downwards allowing for better visibility and is less dangerous for pedestrians. Also, random everyday "civilians" aren't driving around Sprinter vans all the time as the trades, delivery companies, etc. are the ones chartering out these vans. As for pickup trucks and their hood design, do I even has to explain it? They're literally killing us!

Practicallity:
Going to a different story. So, my dad's sedan was damaged and was in the shop for repairs. So we were given a F-150 pickup truck as a courtesy vehicle. And with first-hand experience, I can safely say that pickup truck are the most impractical vehicle for everyday use. Firstly, it had an open truck bed, meaning that when couldn't put luggage or groceries in the back. Sure, some truck have a cover or canopy, but those are add-ons for the elephant in the room. Second, it's so tall and hard the climb into. When we decided to use it for some furniture, I had trouble loading it in the truck bed due to it's height. And finally, it was a gas guzzler. My dad spent so much money one fuel which is in sharp contrast to the turbo charged Mercedes-Benz C Class that he drives that is rather rule efficient. As for the cargo van, well when we loaded the U-haul van, it was very practical and didn't cause us any trouble. Do I need to explain myself further?

Pickup Truck: 0
Now, the only category that pickup trucks might have an edge is which towing but A. vehicles made for towing should be designed without a boxy, pedestrian-killing hood, and B. who the hell can afford a motor home and a yacht?
Van: 4
Pickup Truck: 1
And finally, to address the "open truck bed" for transporting loose gravel. Not only are the beds for modern pickup trucks short, but there's literally a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with a flat open bed.

Not to mention that a small trailer would be better for gravel as many of them can dump the load like a dump truck.

Final verdict
Cargo Van: 5
Pickup Truck: 1
Apart from towing which lets be honest, most pickup truck drivers never towed anything in their lives, a cargo van is better for most if not all utility tasks. They're versatile with large cargo and passenger capacity, safer for pedestrians, and are just more practical for day to day tasks. For "tasks" that pickup trucks are marketed for, a flatbed variant of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is more that capable of performing that, or a small Home Depot rental trailer as most cargo vans have some towing capacities.
So in conclusion, I cannot find any reason that justifies the existence of modern, North American pickup trucks as cargo vans are better in almost every single way. The sole reason for the existence of modern oversized pickup trucks is that they are marketed towards the worse people ever, pickup truck drivers with anti-social, reactionary politics.
If I had my way, I would end the production of pickup trucks or at the very least end the sale of them to civilians as personal vehicles used for non-work purposes (I mean you can say that for all personal automobiles, but lets start with the worse of the worse) as they have no reason for existing apart from people with a fragile ego and toxic personality. While it's a chicken and egg question regarding pickup truck drivers, I can safely say that by eliminating pickup trucks, we can help to mitigate the toxic personalities they embolden.
