I recently was commenting on someone else asking about the value of Moviepass, and if people thought it was worth it. I've had one for a few months now, and I'm pretty in love with it, so I wrote a long reply to them. However, after re-reading it, I think it might better serve on its own to start a general discussion about Moviepass, without trying to revive a fairly dead thread. So here's my general thoughts about MP, how it's changed how I go see the movies, and a few of my small tips on how to get the most value out of it. Feel free to fire away with any additional questions, and I'm curious what other people who have it/have tried it think of the service too.
General Opinion
I've had it for about 4 months now, and I absolutely LOVE it. It's redefined how often, and which movies, I'll go see.
I was always a fairly heavy theater goer, at least compared to most people. I'd say before Moviepass I averaged a movie maybe once every 4-6 weeks, whereas I'd venture a guess the average person is at best maybe half as frequent, if not worse. Since signing up, I've averaged maybe once a week. My record so far has been 5 movies in a single week. I think by the time summer rolls around and releases get better, I'll be going to a few every week through August/September.
I've found that in the past, there was always a few distinct tiers I placed movies into:
  1. First, the movies I was guaranteed to see in theathers. Stuff that is just can't miss. Either something that looked so spectacular it had to be seen on the big screen (Interstellar), or something I wanted to see immediately upon release because all my friends would be talking about it and I didn't want it to get spoilered for me, or sometimes just movies that you know would be more enjoyable in a theater full of people, even if quality wise they weren't the best films (comedies often fall into this grop).
  2. Then there was the lineup of movies that looked pretty awesome, but weren't definites; if I was particularly busy the weeks after it came out, or if a couple of the "can't miss" ones came out around the same time, it might end up getting relegated to Netflix/Pirate Bay viewing months down the line.
  3. Then there is the lineup of movies that I was fairly ambivalent about seeing unless I REALLY wanted to see something, and that was the best thing out that I hadn't already seen. Or perhaps it looked intriguing but didn't review well, or didn't look that great but reviewed off the charts. These are the ones that you knew you'd end up seeing, but it's hard to justify shelling out the money to see it in theaters RIGHT THEN.
  4. Finally, the stinkers; the ones you know you'd probably regret. Either not your genre, or just reviewed very poorly, or looked very predictable. Comedies where you can tell most of the funny jokes were in the trailer fall into this group. These are the ones that you know the majority of the time, even if you leave having enjoyed the film, you'll regret having spent the money to see it. Maybe you enjoyed it, but you didn't $10-20 enjoy it.
Moviepass won't change things for Group 1. These movies had your wallet by the balls already. What they WILL change, is groups #2 and #4. Since you're paying the same amount per month regardless, now you'll find you'll take more risks. That movie that looked awesome, but you had already seen 2-3 "must-sees" or "blockbusters" that month? Rather than getting passed up, now you'll find yourself saying "screw it, let's do this!". And the movies that you wanted to see, but didn't want to spend the movie on? Since you don't spend any more money to go see it (besides snacks), why the hell not? This is where I changed the most, because going to the movies became my most common form of bored entertainment, whereas previously something else like video games might have filled that void.
Complaints
Most of my complaints have to do with some usability problems and/or bugs they still need to get fixed.
  • First and foremost, the GPS issue. Sometimes you get to the theather and try to check-in, but it won't detect you're actually at the theather. If you showed up fairly early, this isn't a big deal. Usually an app/phone restart can fix the issue, and if that fails, you can call the customer service line. I've found that the wait time is usually a minute or two most of the time, and the CSR will just manually check-in to the showtime for you very quickly. However, for something that is pretty much the key method they use for determining you're actually at the theather, it needs to be damned bulletproof. Since an upp update a month or two ago, this feature has worked MUCH MUCH better, but it's still not perfect.
  • A few theaters will show IMAX/3D showtimes even though they shouldn't. For me personally, I've noticed this bug on only 1 theater in maybe 10 that I've used MP at. What is most annoying about it is that there is no indication that the particular showtime you chose is an IMAX/3D, so when you go to pay at the register, it will fail. Really embarassing if you're in a group of people and have it happen. Even worse if you didn't bring your wallet and only brought your MP card, because now you're screwed. This is because the card is preloaded with enough funds for a normal showtime, but the cost is increased for the IMAX/3D showtime. I reported this bug to MP about 3 months back for the theater in question, and it still hasn't been addressed. See my ProTip #2 for how to take advantage of this bug to your advnatage though.
  • The online website for the service is just pitiful. Even up until a few months ago, the app itself had very limited features for things like managing your account details, your membership, knowing when you'd be billed, etc. A few updates back, a ton of new features came into the app, and mostly addressed that. However, I sometimes wish I could view and modify these things from an actual website, like most other services out there. About the only thing you can do on MP's site however, is sign up initially. They don't need to reinvent the wheel here, just copy most of the things available in the app to the website. The lack of this is just annoying and should be easily addressed.
ProTips
ProTip #1: The other perk nobody really thinks about is the rewards cards most big theater chains have. The three big chains around me are Regal, AMC, and Epic. AMC has a crappy rewards program. Epic + Regal are great though; you alternate between a free drink, popcorn, and movie ticket, for every $40 in tickets + snacks spent. Even if you never actually pay for a drink or popcorn or candy, just on tickets alone, you'll earn a reward about every 3 movies. If you buy a decent amount of snacks, you can end up looping around every 2 trips with Regal (their per-day limit is higher than Epic). Since you'll end up seeing a lot of movies you normally wouldn't see, you'll be racking up reward points like crazy.
ProTip #2: There is a few workarounds to seeing 3D/IMAX movies with Moviepass.
  • The first one is easier, but it only works if the IMAX/3D showtimes appear in the app for your theater, which is a bug that only occurs in limited situations. I've found that for most places, Moviepass has figured out how to filter them out, but in some places, they still appear. For the Epic chain I go to however, they have what is called Epic XL: it's essentially fake IMAX, and is $2. XL movies show up in the app like normal, you can select it, but when you go to pay, it gets declined, because it has the extra cost which Moviepass hasn't loaded enough funds on your card to be able to pay for. This is actually a bug that support swears they'll fix, but it hasn't been for months now. The perk though is I've figured out I can pick these movies, and then pay $2 in cash and the rest with my card at the cashier, and boom, IMAX movie!
  • The second method is a bit sketchier, and only works on big chains, but it makes it a lot more feasible. Most of the theaters around me are BIG; the biggest I can think of is 24 screens, and hell, the smallest I go to is still 12 screens. This means that short of the end of the night, there is typically 2-3 movies screening within 20-30 minutes of the one I want to see. As mentioned above, most of the time 3D/IMAX showtimes are filtered out of the app. If you want to see one of these, instead pick a normal showtime that is around the same time, pay for it, but then go see the IMAX/3D showing instead. Obviously because of the need for glasses, this is easier with IMAX than 3D, unless you smuggle some in. Also, if your theater is the kind that monitors entry into individual screening rooms, this won't work. However, at least down here, there is one ticket guy at the front that reads your ticket and points you left or right, but once you're in, you can do as you please. Another warning, the chains around here also seem to have people that go into theaters during the film and seem to be counting the number of people in each, so if you try doing this trick with a dozen other people in a screening that's a quarter full, you might get caught.
Conclusion
I think that about sums up my experience, and the tips and tricks I've learned over the last few months. If anyone has any other questions for me, feel free to fire away.
tl;dr If you don't mind going to movies alone sometimes, and love the theater experience, you'll easily get the value out of the $30-35/mo cost
