Hello Everyone, I am new to self-hosting and recently purchased a miniPC. I am encountering issues and am not sure where I might have gone wrong. Specifically, I am unable to access the local IP interface of opnsense, and I am also new to networking. Here are the steps I've taken so far, with the aim of my project explained as I go further:
  1. Installed Proxmox:
    • Set up Proxmox with one node named pve-node-1, accessible via 192.168.0.11:8006.
  2. Created VM1 with Ubuntu Server:
    • Assigned a static IP so I can SSH into it from my laptop. Modified the file at /etc/netplan/01-netcfg.yaml as follows: yaml network: version: 2 renderer: networkd ethernets: enp0s18: dhcp4: no addresses: [192.168.0.155/24] # Replace with your desired IP address and subnet mask routes: - to: default via: 192.168.0.1 nameservers: addresses: [1.1.1.1] # Replace with your preferred DNS server

Issues:

    • I cannot access the local IP interface of opnsense from my laptop.
  2. No Internet Access from VM2:
    • VM2 cannot access the internet.

The unthinkable is happening with alarming regularity at the Frankenbank JPMorgan Chase. Over the last seven years, with Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon at the helm, JPMorgan Chase has managed to do what no other federally-insured American bank has managed to do in the history of banking in the United States. The bank has admitted to five separate felony counts brought by the U.S. Department of Justice, while regulators took no action to remove the Board of Directors or Jamie Dimon.
Now, once again, the outrageous hubris of this Board is on display. Just last fall the bank forked over $920 million of shareholders money to settle its fourth and fifth felony counts brought by the Department of Justice, this time for rigging the precious metals and U.S. Treasury market. Now, in the dog days of summer, rarely a time for bonuses on Wall Street, the JPMorgan Chase board announced on July 20 that it is giving Dimon 1.5 million stock options which, according to a specialist cited at Bloomberg News, have a total value of $50 million on paper.
In its filing with the SEC, the Board wrote this about the 1.5 million stock option award to Dimon:
“This special award reflects the Board’s desire for Mr. Dimon to continue to lead the Firm for a further significant number of years. In making the special award, the Board considered the importance of Mr. Dimon’s continuing, long-term stewardship of the Firm, leadership continuity, and management succession planning amidst a highly competitive landscape for executive leadership talent.”
Translation: No one else wants to run a mega bank with a rap sheet like ours.
Here’s the sneaky way that the Board gave Dimon a $50 million bonus. According to the SEC filing, the exercise price of the options is “equal to the average of the high and low prices of JPMorgan Chase & Co. common stock on July 20, 2021” – the date of the award. As luck would have it for Dimon, the stock traded in a wide range that day, with a low of $146.33 and a high of $151.12, providing an average exercise price of $148.73 – a very low exercise price for a stock that has traded in the $160s this year. Dimon would get the difference between what he pays to exercise the option (the exercise price) and what it’s trading at when he decides to sell the stock.
Dimon cannot exercise the options for five years, at the earliest, but with the Board also rubber stamping Dimon’s ability to prop up the bank’s share price by using shareholders’ money to buy back tens of billions of dollars in stock each year, it’s a win, win situation for Dimon. It also doesn’t hurt that federal regulators insanely allow these mega banks on Wall Street to trade their own stock in their own dark pools.
The SEC filing also notes this about the stock option award: “The options are not part of Mr. Dimon’s regular annual compensation and will not be awarded on a regularly recurring basis.”
That means that Dimon is also likely to get the $31.5 million (or more) in regular compensation that he received for calendar year 2020 from his hubristic Board, giving him a paper compensation of about $81.5 million for the year. (Which is going to send other Wall Street CEOs stomping into their Board rooms and demanding similar perks.) According to Forbes, Dimon has a net worth of $1.8 billion, the bulk of that coming from his stock-based awards at JPMorgan Chase, which are part of his annual compensation.
Dimon learned how to game his way to billionaire status via stock options from the Master – his mentor Sandy Weill. Dimon was Weill’s first lieutenant as they hatched up merging Citibank, the federally-insured bank, with Traveler’s, which at the time owned the speculative trading houses of Salomon Brothers and Smith Barney. The merged company was called Citigroup and was illegal at the time in 1998. It led to Congress repealing the Glass-Steagall Act the very next year in order to allow the deal to survive. Citigroup became insolvent just nine years after the repeal of Glass-Steagall, leading to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York secretly funneling $2.5 trillion in cumulative loans to Citigroup to prop it back up.
Weill’s Machiavellian get-rich-quick device became colloquially known on Wall Street as the Count Dracula stock option plan – it was impossible to kill it. You also couldn’t prosecute it, because Citigroup’s highly-compensated Board of Directors had authorized it.
Weill’s plan worked like this: every time he exercised one set of stock options, he got a reload of approximately the same amount of options. Stock option grants are supposed to be based on outstanding performance, which benefits the shareholders. But even in years when Citigroup was being pummeled in the media for facilitating frauds at WorldCom and Enron and issuing fraudulent research to the public, Weill continued to receive his re-loaded stock options.

Graef “Bud” Crystal, a corporate compensation expert, is the man who coined the Dracula analogy for Weill’s stock options. In an article for Bloomberg News, Crystal explained that between 1988 and 2002, Weill “received 96 different option grants” on an aggregate of $3 billion of stock. Crystal says “It’s a wonder that Weill had time to run the business, what with all his option grants and exercises. In the years 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2000, Weill exercised, and then received new option grants, a total of, respectively, 14, 20, 13 and 19 times.”
When Weill stepped down as CEO in 2003, he had amassed over $1 billion in compensation, the bulk of it coming from his reloading stock options. (Weill remained as Chairman of Citigroup until 2006. The bank’s share price fell to 99 cents in 2009, despite all of the Fed’s secret bailouts.)
Weill had wasted no time in cashing out a big chunk of his chips when he exited management. One day after stepping down as CEO, the Citigroup Board of Directors made an exception and allowed Weill to sell back to the corporation 5.6 million shares of his stock for $264 million.
Which raises the question – what’s Dimon’s exit strategy? According to JPMorgan Chase’s most recent proxy filing with the SEC, as of February 28, 2021, Dimon owned 9,385,141 shares of the bank’s stock – the bulk of that achieved through option and stock awards. As of yesterday’s closing price of $150.93, those shares had a market value of $1.4 billion or 78 percent of Dimon’s net worth.

I listened to this episode this morning with great interest, as Dr. Dubal has a number of published papers on Klotho, it's an interesting enzyme with respect to aging and cognitive decline, and I'm one of the rare (~1-3%) people with the KL-VS homozygous allele. This episode reminded me of how little we really know about all this stuff.
The TL;DL of this episode is that Klotho declines with age, people with the heterozygous form of the KL-VS produce higher amounts of Klotho, Klotho appears to be geroprotective, especially for cognitive function, and is being investigated as a potential therapeutic. All this is great, but when it comes down to it we still know very little, and are far from having any sort of in-depth knowledge of what exactly is going on.
Case in point is the KL-VS homozygous variant, who has two copies of the KL-VS haplotype. In general, these people are viewed as greater risk of all cause mortality and cognitive decline. However, because they are fairly rare there hasn't been much study of them and in my opinion it's far from clear whether it is helpful or harmful. In the episode Dr. Dubal stated her hypothesis that the slightly different enzyme produced by the KL-VS mutant in the heterozygous variant may be less effective and somehow spur greater production of the "wild type" enzyme. As she stated in a published 2023 paper:
Carrying one copy of the KL-VS allele, but not two, has repeatedly been associated with longevity [2,35,36], cardiovascular function [35], enhanced cognition and brain health [18,24], and protection from the effects of AD [4-6,8]. It is possible that the KL-VS allele changes the processing [37] of the klotho protein, changes its activity, increases its levels, or some combination.
Evidence supports a relationship between the KL-VS allele and higher systemic levels of the klotho protein. Both the KL-VS allele and higher serum klotho associate with greater gray matter volume [12], and higher serum klotho associates with functional brain connections [12] and better cognition [23]. It stands to reason that KL-VS may exert its influence via the systemic protein hormone shed by the transmembrane protein it encodes. It is important to note that although KL-VS genetic variation affects the klotho protein isoform, our ELISA measurements of klotho, either by serum or CSF, did not allow distinction between the wildtype klotho protein and a klotho protein altered by coding of the KL-VS allele. However, klotho is detected in all KL-VS genotypes reported in this study, including homozygotes. Thus, important questions that remain are whether wildtype klotho or KL-VS-coded klotho differ in their distribution among KL-VSHET and KL-VSHOM carriers, and whether the different klotho protein types separately associate with clinical, biomarker, and pathological measures in aging and neurodegenerative disease.
So obviously there is some data pointing to an issue with homozygous KL-VS variants. The paper goes on to state that in contrast to prior findings, in this study on average those with homozygous KL-VS had the highest Klotho levels and but some had very low levels:
Also in contrast with prior findings from our group [12], we found that serum klotho was highest in KL-VSHOM. Considering evidence that KL-VSHOM have worse health outcomes [24,35] it would initially appear counterintuitive that serum klotho is higher in KL-VSHOM. However, the mutant klotho isoform produced by the KL-VS allele is thought to have diminished function compared to the protective wildtype klotho [2,17]. Thus, regardless of its concentration, the mutant klotho may be responsible for worse health outcomes observed in KL-VSHOM. Because of the limited sample size of 20 KL-VSHOM participants, definitive interpretation of this result will require follow-up investigation. However, 10 of the 20 KL-VSHOM participants had serum klotho below the mean of KL-VSNC participants, and the prior study [12] included only four KL-VSHOM participants; it is possible that the randomly sampled participants in that study had low klotho concentration by chance. In our study, higher serum klotho in KL-VSHOM was no longer observed when outliers were removed, and further investigation in this population will be needed.
In other words, it appears that the rarity of the homozgous KL-VS variant may have had an impact on the data, with the tiny sample size (only 4 people) being insufficient to draw meaningful conclusions.
Adding to this possibility is a 2016 study of Danish people 92-100yrs involving 1480 subjects that found that KL-VS homozygous carriers had better cognitive function:
Carriers of the functional KL-VS variant, as determined by either rs9536314 or the proxy rs9527024, had a poorer cognitive function than noncarriers when assessed using the MMSE (β: −0.59, p = .046). This association was, however, only borderline significant and not reflected in the CCS (β: −0.06, p = .74). Of note, those homozygous for the KL-VS variant (N = 38) had a better cognitive function than noncarriers, thus we subsequently applied a restricted model suggested by Dubal and coworkers that leaves out the homozygous KL-VS carriers from the analysis. This model was slightly better than the additive model, as heterozygous carriers of KL-VS had 1/10 of a SD poorer cognitive function in the CCS (β: −0.40, p = .06) and 1/7 of a SD poorer cognitive function in the average MMSE (β: −0.81, p = .02) than noncarriers.
So what does this mean? At a minimum it means that we really don't have a great idea what is going on, and that it seems like the speculation that the KL-VS version may be inferior is drawing on a tiny dataset that may well be inadequate to draw such conclusions. In other words, we're just hairless apes bumbling around in the dark trying to find hacks we can deploy to possibly increase lifespan, and have very little understanding of what is going on. It is very interesting though. The takeaway, as far as I'm concerned, is that exercise can boost Klotho levels 30%, so keep on exercising!

2024.05.28 19:10 jdiesel878 Where to host reverse proxy, opnsense router or unraid?

I just did a major networking overhaul and now have a beefy router running opnsense. I've already migrated my Adguard Home docker and WireGuard over to the router via the opnsense build in functionally. Now I'm wonder it or makes sense to host my reverse proxy on the router as well. I'm currently using the NPM docker on unraid.
I wouldn't be opposed to using Caddy or HAproxy as opnsense has plugins for both. Just wondering what others have done? My thoughts for decoupling the reverse proxy from unraid are that WireGuard will still be accessible via the DNS address, I can potentially setup a landing page should my unraid server be offline for maintenance, and it will hopefully resolve this issue I've been having with the Emby docker not resolving DNS names after a full power cycle and requires the docker be restarted once unraid is up and running (I've already tried delaying the Emby docker started to no avail). What is everyone else doing?

Currently, each production (5-8 days) run of our product is creating around 4-5TB of data. So right now we want around 100Tb of free space for production. We have plans to expand with a slower archive unit in the medium term.

We already know it isn't the ideal setup (a NVME one), but we need a step up from our current external HDDs "system" to a unified pool, and our budget is limited (6.000€ - 7.000€ approx) and we know there will be compromises, but we have to start with something.

Hiya all,
I'm a freelance WP website creator, and I am hosting a few live websites for myself and clients using services from a local hosting provider.
2+ years ago I started hosting things at home too, on a Windows Server PC, and so far so good, I've had zero issues.
ATM I'm thinking of moving all web projects to home since I recently found some time to successfully deploy a WP-hosting-ready solution on the said Server.
The current config includes a Docker Env running under a virtualized Ubuntu 24.04 LTS machine on Hyper-V with nginx proxy manager installed, and everything seems ready to run.
The domains are forwarded to home via Cloudflare and are routed to their destinations via the Windows IIS ARR feature currently, and I am planning to run a few websites on the aforementioned Ubuntu Installation, so I will be routing domains on a second loop via the nginx instance.
So I'm asking for your opinion on the whole setup regarding reliability and what can I expect to go wrong. I'm saying this in advance - I refuse to rebuild and rethink the whole setup to remove Windows altogether, so everyone can spare opinions in that regard. The mission behind this post is mainly to get myself ready for any disasters incoming. Again, the configuration is the same for 2+ years and so far is as robust as it can get, so I will not break what's not broken.
And one more thing, I am a little lost on what to do with backing this config up. While the rest of the projects that are hosted are running on separate Hyper-V VMS, I am just backing up their VHDs elsewhere and in case of a disaster, everything can be restored for just a few minutes. But when it comes to the Docker ENV, I am unsure how to back up the separate containers I'm having. Perhaps I should deploy a Container containing some software to do so, but unsure on that, and I will greatly benefit from your opinions on the matter. So far I am daily backing up the VHD of the Ubuntu install, but if I'm making changes to separate websites, I'd prefer to have separate backups too.

Hi all,
I'm a bit confused on how to get this to work.
We have a VPC peering where all traffic gets routed into a single vpc to exit via Secure Web Proxy.
We have another VPC that is peered with the one with Secure Web Proxy and we wish to deploy a Cloud Run Job.
While reading the documentation it stated that Direct VPC agree does not support Secure Web Proxy, that leaves me with Serverless VPC Connector.
Problem is when I deploy it I cannot get it to reach out to the Secure Web Proxy in the other VPC.
I've tried to update the VPC peering but this server less subnet refuses to appear.
Has anyone done a similar solution, trying to figure out what is it that I am missing.
The IPs do not overlap.

Hi all,
We're reviewing and comparing the major SSE vendors, and while of course they all have their differences (don't get me started on licensing...), on high level they're all doing more or less the same things (or working towards it in roadmaps). For the sake of this discussion let's make the statement that all vendors check all basic requirements for both internet and private access.
What I would like to get your opinions/thoughts/feedback on is on the high level architectural differences, specifically related to private app access. And what those differences mean to Zero Trust - whatever the definition of the day is for ZTNA...
- Palo Alto / Cato: coming from a more classic networking background, using hardware devices to build ISPEC tunnels back to their cloud environments, maintaining IP to IP connectivity between client and server.
- Netskope / Zscaler: coming form a cloud native background (CASB/SWG), using "connector" virtual appliances, being an in-line proxy between client-server and thus breaking IP to IP connectivity between client and server.
I'm having a hard time deciding whether or not the "proxy" behavior of the latter is a good or a bad thing. For example:
I can see the security benefits of proxying every single connection, and thus being able to do authentication/authorization on each flow. However, you loose all visibility on the server side as all clients are hidden behind the IP of the connector appliance.
I see the benefit of being able to just deploying an additional connector VM for scalability or in new environments, versus buying more hardware and configuring & maintaining those devices and VPN tunnels. However, do you want to be dependent on your VM environment for network access?
I see the benefit of being able to prevent cloud backhauling when a user is on-prem via the local connector VMs, versus trying to maintain a consistent policy across cloud and on-prem firewalls. But again you build more dependencies on your VM environment, and you loose NGFW security capabilities.

2024.05.28 11:28 yonicstudios Considering self-hosting my current blog, concerned about serving image and video assets

I have an Astro blog that's being deployed via Netlify and Github Pages. It's being deployed into GHPages because that deploy is specifically designed to support legacy web browsers from late 90s-early 2000s, and it relies on the fact that Pages does not enforce HTTPS.
However, I don't think this behavior will stay like this forever and I wish to self-host -at least the legacy version, but potentially both- to a server I'm sharing and maybe enable HTTPS with a cipher suite supported by those browsers.
The main problem is that being a purely static site and the fact that I'm using image transformations from Astro for multiple file formats and sizes, the transformed images end up inside the generated site's directory, resulting in quite large bundles. Right now I've considered having the source code and deploy shoved directly into a Backblaze bucket mounted into the server, which probably is the cheapest, but maybe not the most efficient method in terms of building and bandwidth performance.
Another approach I had in mind was to shift to SSR + ISR, which is something I might be interested on doing in the future, and generate the images on demand. But the blog doesn't get much traffic, so I think a CDN-based solution might be a bit overkill, besides I would need to set up a reverse proxy for supporting incoming plain HTTP requests, if necessary. I checked out Imagekit, and it sounds fair as a CDN-based option.
Is there a better way for handling static assets by relying on the Backblaze storage?

Hey there,
we are currently migrating our MobileIron MDM. Basic Setup etc went well.
Our OLD system (mdm.company.de) was directly natted with a public IP.
Our NEW system (epmm.company.de) is beeing published with a Sophos WAF. We want a higher security level thats why we put a Sophos WAF between the Internet and the on Premise Appliance.
We can visit the reg page on the new system via epmm.company.de/go After entering the Username and Password, the Profil is downloaded. So far so good.
If I try to install the Profile now, we get a 502 Proxy Error. I can see the following URL is beeing contacted: https://epmm.company.de/mifs/c/i/mdm/checkin.html
Additional Info: If I open https://epmm.company.de/mifs/c/i/ it works (page not exist response from the epmm server) -> but as soon as I add /mdm to the URL (https://epmm.company.de/mifs/c/i/mdm) I get an browser error "ERR_BAD_SSL_CLIENT_AUTH_CERT" I think thats the reason why the Sophos WAF responses with an "502 proxy error"
If I try it for example with our working system (mdm.company.de/mifs/c/i/mdm/checkin.html) I get a "valid" response This method/operation is not allowed.
I guess there is an internal redirecting error as soon as the directiv /mdm is added. Maybe I missed a checkbox which needs to be enabled?

I have NGINX Proxy Manager set to use wildcard subdomains and the domain with SSL certs.
I setup pihole with a CNAME to dns.mydomain.com to the IP of my pihole instance's tailnet IP.
If i try to access the admin panel via dns.mydomain.com/admin I am unable to access it. (Goes to 100.100.100.100 via nslookup)
I have setup DNS on my tailnet to the tailnet IP of my pihole instance IP.
What am I doing wrong?

2024.05.28 09:33 AussieHyena IIS 10 Reverse Proxy to Tomcat

So, I know that the standard approach is to use isapi_redirect to create the connection over AJP between IIS and Tomcat. But we've found today that may no longer be correct.
Our setup has ARR and UrlRewrite installed and we were proxying requests to a Tomcat 9 instance on another server via isapi_redirect. In our non-prod environments we were able to successfully connect by a normal UrlRewrite rule.
Are we missing something? Or does anyone know if/when this changed? My suspicion is that it is related to the introduction of HttpPlatformHandler.

Je suis en train de me prendre la tête sur de l'architecture, et j'ai besoin d'avis.
Voici en très gros, mon architecture simplifié (je vous laisse que l'essentiel):

Je souhaite mettre en place un serveur d'authentification Authentik qui servira pour tous les services (Portainer, wiki, serveur web) donc dans les deux zone LAN et DMZ. Il sera sync avec l'AD. Donc la logique voudrait qu'il soit plutôt dans le LAN SRV pour éviter que ma base soit dans une zone plus ouverte.
Mais je dois utiliser des certificats qui sont validés sur l'infra. Donc je peux créer un auto-signé en déployant sur les postes. Mais comment faire l'externe ? La plupart des services sont monté via Docker. De plus, j'ai besoin que chaque service aie un nom de domaine distinct mais la j'ai une seule IP correspondant a la machine hôte (DOCKER-LAN) mais plusieurs services derrières que j'appelle via des ports différents. Mais du coup j'aurais plusieurs nom DNS pour la même IP.
Si je veux rajouter un service avec une interface web, il faut aussi que je redéploie le certificat...
Ne serait-ce pas plus simple si il y'avait un reverse proxy aussi en interne ? J'ai peut être pas pensé a une autre solution ? Est-ce que finalement Authentik, c'est pas si grave si il est en DMZ ? (En bloquant l'interface admin depuis le web)
Merci d'avance pour ceux qui prendrons un peu temps pour discuter de ce sujet, mais qui je penses peut servir de cas pour vos usages !
