2024.05.09 20:01 ImADudeDuh 20th Century Piano Men: Greatest Hits (Billy/Elton/Stevie)

Intro

No one knows when the piano was invented. We have pianos surviving as early as 1726 and records of them existing by 1700, leaving their creation sometime in the late 17th century. However, it’s hard to imagine modern music without it. It’s a very versatile instrument, showing up in music from early ragtime and jazz to modern electronic and hip-hop. In the 20th century, it was a mainstay instrument in what we consider “pop music.” During that time, three men became ubiquitous with the instrument: Billy Joel, Elton John, and Stevie Wonder. I am ImADudeDuh and over the course of the next month, we will be determining which hit of these legends' is the best!

Billy Joel

Billy Joel is so entwined with the piano that he is known as “The Piano Man.” With his father as a pianist and starting piano lessons at 4 years old, the piano and Billy have been together for most of his life. After not graduating high school, he made the choice to pursue a music career, eventually signing to Columbia records. His first hit single for the label was “Piano Man,” a song that perfectly defines his legacy for the next 50 years. Billy became known for his lyrical storytelling, his piano playing, and for being the quintessential New Yorker. Joel has sold out Madison Square Garden 100 times, with the 100th being the subject of a recent TV special.
Records Sold: over 150 million #1 Hits: 3 Hot 100 Hits: 43 Platinum Albums: 20 Grammy Nominations: 23 Grammy Wins: 5 Specialties: heartfelt ballads, Motown-esque throwbacks, and love songs cheesier than a dish at an Italian restaurant.

  5. Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)

  12. Tell Her About It
  13. Uptown Girl
  14. The Longest Time
  15. We Didn't Start the Fire
  16. The River of Dreams

Elton John

Elton John is probably the most “relevant” artist of the three today, with him currently sitting at over 50 million monthly listeners on Spotify. From albums of duets in 1993 and 2021, and soundtracking classic films like The Lion King and Gnomeo & Juliet, Elton has lent his talents to others, which may have helped keep up his musical prestige throughout the years. He’s a very versatile performer, dabbling in genres from glam rock to blues to country. In 2023, he received all the awards necessary to earn an EGOT. Elton is most known for his extravagant style of showmanship, but don’t let the feathers fool you, he can sing some heartbreaking songs.
Records Sold: over 300 million #1 Hits: 9 Hot 100 Hits: 73 Platinum Albums: 31 Grammy Nominations: 35 Grammy Wins: 5 Specialties: doing the most on piano, doing the least on piano, and totally 100% heterosexual love songs

  13. I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues
  14. Nikita
  15. I'm Still Standing
  16. Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me (with George Michael)

Stevie Wonder

Stevie Wonder started his career by breaking a world record. His first charting single, ‘Fingertips Pt. 2,’ got him the record for the Youngest Solo Artist to Hit #1 at 13 years old, a record that still holds today. Throughout the latter half of the 60s. Stevie cemented himself as a Motown legend. However, in the mid-1970s, Stevie started his golden era. His album run from Talking Book to Songs in the Key of Life is one of the most legendary 4 album runs in music history, a time where Stevie became the only person to win Album of the Year for 3 consecutive releases. He was known as one of the best Soul and Funk artists ever. Even after that historic period, Stevie still managed several hits and even #1s throughout the 80s, and is still one of the most beloved artists of all time.

Rate Rules

credit to whoever made this originally, these have been used for so many rates
  • Listen to every song listed and give it a score between one (1) and ten (10). Decimal points are allowed, but only to one place (ex. 7.1 is acceptable, but not 7.15). Hosts do not care what score you give the songs as long as it is between those two numbers.
  • You have to rate every single song in the rate. If you skip any and do not give me a score when I ask you for one, your ballot will not be counted. This is because the program used to determine the results will break if scores are not successfully put in and I will have a mental breakdown if the program doesn't work because it will be a pain in the ass to do this manually.
  • You may give one song a zero (0) and one song an eleven (11). These should be reserved for your favorite track and least favorite track. If you do use either your zero (0) or your eleven (11), it is strongly encouraged to leave a comment on the track. It can be as short or as long as you want, but please leave one; it will help the sub understand if you should be canceled or not when the rate is being revealed.
  • Please use the prepared link to submit your scores! That is the only form of ballot we will accept. We spent a lot of time and effort on it, so please use it.
    • Note: if you're trying to access on a mobile device or on the new reddit layout, it may not work; I have made it so the link will take you to old.reddit.com, so you should use a computer to send in your scores (if possible)!
  • If you desire to change any of the scores after you have already submitted them, simply message me and I will be glad to help!
  • If we believe your scores include any form of sabotage (which would be weird for a Billy Joel/Elton John/Stevie Wonder rate), we reserve the right to reject your ballot. Sabotage is defined as extremely low overall average(s) that shows a clear bias towards or against one artist within the rate. If you truly hate the songs given low scores, we strongly encourage you to write comments on them. This indicates to us that you are not trying to rig the results, meaning everything will go smoothly. :)
  • Your scores should not be considered confidential! Don't be scared to share them. Go nuts. Campaign for whatever song you gave an eleven to. Or not. This whole thing really is not that deep.

Commenting Guideline

It is also highly encouraged that you add song comments to your ballot! Do this by adding a space after the score and then typing to your heart's desire, like this:
Your Song: 10 I can tell everybody this is a bop!
You can also leave comments for artists! In order to do so, just add a colon after the artist you’d like to comment on and leave a comment like this:
Artist: Billy Joel: Wow, he’s so good, I wish New York was real.
Any format other than this is NOT good and you will deeply hurt me if you do not follow the example given here. This includes:
Superstition: 1: this is scarily bad!
We Didn’t Start The Fire: This song is FIRE 🔥🔥🔥PUT IT OUT 🔥🔥🔥1
Don’t Go Breaking My Heart: I’m giving this a 9 cause I’m a Kiki Dee stan for life.
Mi Cherie Amour: 10, Even the French jumpscare can’t bring this song down!

2024.05.08 07:51 bbyfog Is Regulatory Affairs Science or Art

https://www.raps.org/news-and-articles/news-articles/2024/5/euro-convergence-experts-agree-regulatory-affairs
Panelists at the recent 2024 RAPS Euro Convergence conference considered the question, “Is regulatory affairs science or art?” while presenting famous artworks at the meeting.
[Excerpt]
They presented artworks, such as Claude Monet’s painting Lady in the Garden and Edgar Degas’ L’Orchestre de l'Opéra, which the panelists said could represent the various parties, such as industry and regulators, working in harmony to bring treatments to patients.
Presenting L’Orchestre de l'Opéra, Gert Bos, executive director at Qserve, stated, “the musicians, instruments, and dancers in the art piece could be seen as the regulatory players and industry working together to fine-tune and produce music and performance for patients and healthcare providers represented by the orchestra audience.”
Bodo Mestmacher, TIC Manager MDR at TÜV NORD CERT GmbH said, "The science part of it is to collect the information and compile it into documents that are submitted for registration purposes, for postmarket surveillance and other purposes. The art part is about how to compile the documents, data, and facts. It should introduce you to the data and facts and tell you a story.”
Elizabeth Gfoeller, corporate director for regulatory affairs at MED-EL said, “While the rules, guidelines and other documents are based on hard science, regulatory professionals have to use a lot of "artful skill" on a day-to-day basis to get products to market.”

2024.04.27 20:09 solrac137 I would like to ask for help for a final boss encounter PF1E

So I have been DMing a campaign in my HW setting for some friends for almost 3 years now. They are level 17, and are very powerful, which is fine by me, but they make powerful characters, or maybe I need to improve monster design.
Stuff that would be challenging for a level 17 party according to CR guidelines is usually a breeze for them and I had to improvise a bit to give them a sweat in encounters sometimes, but the campaign has gone great so far. Still, all things must come to an end and I plan to finish the campaign once they reach level 20, in universe they have defeated all but one threat.
To give some context, they were fighting a guy trying to summon an eldritch god on the planet which would have resulted in the world being destroyed, this fight took place in a plane where time runs very differently while they spent weeks in this place years passed on the material plane and their world.
A powerful lich who was awakened by player shenanigans many years ago ( in game years and like a year in session terms) has been slowly but steadily trying to take over the world, since there were more immediate threats the party decided to deal with these first.
Now the core of the sessions is that after escaping this strange planet many years have passed ( I have no exact number yet maybe decades or centuries), the Lich being unopposed by the MCs has won, mortals exist only as cattle and slaves, giant necropolis arise over the ruins of mortal metropolis and plans for opening portals and bringing the gift / curse of undead to other worlds are in line.
Now I would like to give an encounter that gives them a sweat and I know that action economy means that single boss encounters are usually a bad idea, so I was thinking of having this lich guy along with some undead and maybe some gimmicks in the map so its not only I hit you hit x turns.
This is the party composition to give an idea. level 15 physic of pageantry with 1 level in loremaster level 15 arcanist with 1 level of loremaster Level 16 tabaxi unchained monk Level 16 Bard kitsune level 16 spirit dancer medium Level 16 druegar gunslinger They are level 16 right now but recently got enough experience to reach level 17.
For this I would like to ask for help, I was thinking of using something similar to Tar baphon https://www.aonprd.com/MythicMonsterDisplay.aspx?ItemName=The%20Whispering%20Tyrant
maybe changing some spells and items, and adding some undead henchmen. Ideally the encounter should occur once they reach level 20 or something along those lines.
I was toying with the idea of using a lich character with some spells or skills from the videogame but I'm not sure, since it might be too much, I would like to make this post to ask for some help in making a memorable encounter.
TLDR I would like to ask for some help in encounter design and worldbuilding for an encounter for a level 20 party of powerful players so they have fun.
P.s some of them have Reddit I hope they don't read this and get spoiled.

2024.03.23 18:57 Cobalt006 Back again with Weird No Magic Allowed Nonsense

The rain pours down gentle today, a soft static on the cobbled streets and tiled rooves. It runs down gutters and storm drains, funnelled into the rain-mills and pressure-engines that drive the city's beating, burning heart of steam and motion. It punctures the low rolling fog that swirls back up like it's throwing the second punch, pearlescent like oil on water and thick enough to stick to your boots. The odd passer-by is gawked at by people in coffee shops and cafes taking shelter from the weather, with warm drinks below cold eyes.
The fog starts to rise like an unwelcome tide, in waves without the wind's touch. My hand's drifted to my iron and its eight chances to get myself home tonight. An old Lancer's intuition. Something's coming.

Once again I am asking for your opinions on that one weird thing I do, with the lack of wizards but not the lack of problems. A city divided, of rain and steam and eerie fog, full of six groups overtly vying for power and two more subtle ones pulling the strings in an invisible war. All stolen in parts from a dozen different places, but that's how we roll.
Our heroes, the brave souls of the Free Lances, mercenary knights turned straight mercenaries turned problem solvers and monster hunters in the rising age of monsters and problems. Yes that was a revolver, we tech up in response to the lack of woolooloo. Not sure if I'm pushing to automobiles, but it's an excuse for cool chase scenes so jury's out.
What I'm asking advice this time for is class selection. It's limited, obvs, with both actual written limits and the common sense "no magic, stooge" guideline. Right now, I'm working with:
Free Lances of the Dark Continent: Professional Specializations
Fighter
For every conflict, there's a new way to fight it. From mercenary soldiers, to heavily armoured monster hunters, there's a warrior for every violent profession on the misty coast. \- No changes
Rogue
Thieves and assassins, spies and discreet couriers, there's always someone willing to do the dirty work that pays extra for service with a smile and no questions. \- No changes
Barbarian
The mad, the angry, the furious, those who put their own sharpened insanity to use against the terrors in the night, and occasionally their fellow men. \- Dragon and Elemental Instinct are Unavailable.
Ranger
Forest dwellers, urban trackers, bounty hunters, sometimes you need to bring in a target alive, and sometimes finding them is the problem, until you hire one of these. \- Warden Feats are Unavailable
Swashbuckler
The Hayters have a thriving duelling scene, both official and underground. A blade for hire with more subtlety and no less deadly. \- No Changes
Thaumaturge
Mystic artefacts with power left over from before the time of Rune and Storm occasionally surface, and it takes those of great personal strength to keep from succumbing to the ground below. \- No Mechanical Changes, but if your ancient and unique artefact is discovered by an interested party you'll be hunted to the ends of Alearth for it.
Gunslinger
There's an art to black powder and cartridge that many don't adopt, but the pistol duelling circles run as deep as the sword. Snipers with their alchemical shots protect vulnerable cities, and quietened inventions out of Kingsreach filtered into every backstreet under the Storm. \- No Changes
Alchemist
The Progress of Science is irrepressible, and a boon to the common man who can afford it. To the less common sort who take to the Lances, it's an invaluable edge against the monsters who lurk just out of civilisation's light. \- No Changes
Investigator
Every day, another missing person. Every night, another unsolved murder. Every morning, a new mystery. An obsession that drives many crazy, honed to a brilliant edge. \- No Changes
Inventor
The factories and engines that power the economy of Alterra were made by the innovative, those who pushed the boundaries of what was known to be possible, and now that breed stand on the front line against the night, covered in steel, steam, and speculative science \- No Changes
Monk
Some say fighting hand to hand with the things of the woods is madness. Those people don't know that the fighting styles of the Giantstop mines were born from desperation in the deep dark, where weapons were unheard of and life a hairs breadth from death. \- Elemental damage Unavailiable. Also things that can't be re-flavoured as physical training and mental fortitude. Picks gain the Monk tag, on account of the school of not kung fu's origin.

And Free Archetype, because my players clamour for it and I'm nice! But also limited, setting is what it is and I'm not *that* nice. All this is getting handed to players with a strong "Oi, before you even think of a character, read this first". Here's what's so far allowed, but no blurbs this time:
Alchemist,
Gunslinger,
Medic,
Investigator,
City Agent,
Sniping Duo,
Pistol Phenom,
Demolitionist,
Firework Technician,
Inventor,
Unexpected Sharpshooter,
Vehicle Mechanic,
Weapon Improvisor,
Bullet Dancer,
Duellist,
Herbalist,
Scrounger,
Sterling Dynamo (Maybe)

They're picked for flavour, rather than power. Not all of the classes are represented, but that's on purpose. Some were picked for being just plain useful, but most are there to get that technology/alchemy/spycraft kinda vibe that the setting's going for. What I'm asking is:
Are there any things I've missed that need an explicit "yeah no"? What other Archetypes could fit into that theme? Can you come up with any mechanical changes/alterations/additions that might be cool/useful?
Thanks for the long read!

2024.03.19 02:20 ZannD Bellydance banner submissions requested!

The current banner has been up for a while, and I think it's time for a change.
So, find your favorite belly dance pictures and submit them to this thread and make your troupe or performance picture the bellydance subreddit banner!
Rules!
No AI generated images. Photos, or human-crafted art only.
No pirated art. If it's a photo, at *least* try to credit the photographer, so we can credit them in the banner.
Obviously SAFE for all ages - from American cultural acceptability at a minimum. If you aren't sure, submit, and we'll make the determination on the mod side.
Guidelines:
Wide images. The banner is PC wide, not phone vertical. Landscape works for everyone. We can work within some parameters of images through tiling. But wide is better.
No clear faces. We want to show that the dance applies to anyone, not a specific dancer.
Higher resolutions are easier to work with.

So, if you have a picture lurking, or you have some art... submit right here!

2024.03.18 14:00 vpsass Dancewear Monday

Hey everyone, Happy Dancewear Monday! Please feel free in posting a picture of your dancewear style, your new dancewear purchase, your cute warmups, etc. Just a reminder of the guidelines:
1) It is recommended to blur out your face if you want to keep some anonymity.
2) Please list what brands you are wearing in the comments in case other users want to know where you found stuff.
3) All Dancewear Mondays will be NO CRITICISM with regards to ballet. So if someone posts a picture of them in arabesque being like “look at my cute leg warmers” DO NOT comment “Looks great but you should turn out more”. We don’t care if your intentions are good and you are just trying to help, on this subreddit critique is only given when explicitly asked for. If you wouldn’t say it to someone in class don’t comment it on here. (And if you would tell a fellow dancer to turn out more, or something, randomly in class well that just reflects poorly on you).
4) New users who have low comment karma: your post will be filtered into a queue and need to be mod approved, so please be patient if your post does not appear right away.
5) Use the Dancewear Monday flair
Thanks :)

We made an Orthodox Calendar mobile app. Since Great Fast and Pascha are coming, we wanted to share it with you (available for Android, iOS is WIP)

Orthodox Calendar (v1.0.6) on Android
Hello, you all. I made a post some time ago that my friend and I were working together on developing Orthodox Calendar mobile app. We released it on Android and I wanted to share some updates here in case some of you find it useful. Imho it’s especially relevant now as the Great Fast is around the corner.
You can track information about feasts, saints, fast periods, and get some basic recommendations about food restrictions during fasting. You can check out the app by downloading it from Google Play. Feedback is appreciated!
Getting it out of the way cause I wanna share some info about the calendar below.

Design

It’s been 5 months since the last post and we’ve changed a lot of things. The design was the biggest visible improvement. A friend of ours has been helping us to create and improve on the current design. Special thanks to them for such amazing work.

iOS development

We’ve created mock-ups for iOS design according to their conventions and started the work on development. There are some obstacles with it but it’s the first priority after Android release, so we’re sorting it out soon.

Calendar data

Let’s talk about the meat and bones of the application. We have 2 versions of the calendar: Julian (Christmas on 7th) and Revised Julian (Christmas on 25th). We took a calendar from OCA as a core and made some enrichment to the data (mostly related to some technical stuff). We also translated that data into other languages (more info in the section below) which was a formidable undertaking by itself (we didn’t have all the right infrastructure and the process was slow).
We’ve got information about feasts, saints, fasts, fast exceptions (foods allowed), feast symbols, and liturgical colors. Liturgical colors are only available for Julian for now, and they might have some differences from church to church, though it’s mostly extra information, so we’ll add some explanations about it and refine it over time.
With fast exceptions things are more interesting. The fasting rules by themselves are described in Typikon, though they are very strict and were modified over time to fit local parishes (monastic rules are a whole different topic). As a result, the rules differ greatly from church to church. We tried to give some general and more casual guidelines. However, we’re planning to add some configuration of those in the future as well as outline all the fasting rules in the app. This development is only in concept stages. Since the rules are more ambiguous but important, we added an ability to disable these guidelines completely in the settings. That’s for the people who already know the rules by heart or prefer a paper calendar for that type of information.
And I’ll mention here again that your feedback is very important to us. We can’t correct or improve on anything that we’re not aware of, so if you’ve got some recommendations, feel free to reach out (directly in the app, here in the comments, by directly contacting us, etc).

Languages

Currently, we have the following languages in the app:
  • English
  • Russian
  • Ukrainian
We’re planning to expand to more options. Greek, Romanian, and Serbian are the ones that are currently requested the most. We’ll be looking for people who might be interested in helping us with translations. If any of you have a desire to help, please let me know and we’ll figure something out.

Next steps

The most important thing is where we go from here, right? Our plans are grand and we have a long road ahead to reach them. If our God is willing, we’ll get there eventually.
Some of our next steps are:
  • iOS release
  • Addition of dark mode
  • Additional feasts tracking
  • Daily readings
…and a lot more. We also have some pretty interesting ideas for the next apps. But we don’t have that many resources right now, so it’s too early to talk about it.
As of now, the only thing for us to do is to keep moving forward. And we’ll figure out everything else as we go.

TL;DR

The calendar took a lot of time and effort to develop. We did a full redesign of the UI. We’re working on releasing the iOS version next and we’ve got quite a few improvements planned for the future.
You can check out the app by downloading it from Google Play (or share with someone that you know might be interested).
Thanks for reading. Looking forward to your comments!
