2024.05.14 20:40 Delicious-Stretch836 School list reccomendations & Chances?

Hi, everyone. I've been on this sub for a while and would greatly appreciate some advice from the community on whether I should apply this cycle and on a good school list for my stats. I am dead set on becoming a physician-scientist. Open to MD-PhD programs in addition to MSTP's
Bio Data: URM Not low-ses CA CC T20 (non-trad) Junior Undergraduate Physical Science Major & Minor
MCAT: 505
GPA: 3.2 Cumulative (post-bac not needed transfer institution GPA is 4.0) 3.7 sGPA
Research Stats: 5,000 Hours (Across four laboratories) Field - Organic Chemistry & Biological Chemistry I'm at the level of a second or third-year chemistry graduate student; my letters reflect that. My bio work is 500 hours of that total and reflects that difference in ability.
Publications: 2 in review at Nature/Tetrahedron for roughly 4 and 2 months respectively.
Presentations Oral/Poster: 12 in a mix of school and national conferences. Always the only presenter.
Volunteering/Community Service: 1,000 hours in one org I plan to stay in for the foreseeable future

Clinical Experience: 500 hours in a program for premed students meant to give undergrads clinical experience. It's hands-on, lots of vitals, abulating, feeding, bathing, bonding with patients. Note: This was during the pandemic and shortly after. For the past year, I have not participated.
Shadowing: 40 hours across 4 Specialties Note: This is all within the past four months
Honors/Awards: Transfer College awards for Outreach and Research/Academic Excellence Presenter awards for posters from transfer college and national conferences NIH Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) recipient 3 REUs (2 are MSTP specific, if that matters)
Letters: STEM/Non-STEM professors who I know very well (strong letters) I was thinking of 2 STEM 2 Non-STEM, but would that be too many? Should this just be 1:1?
1 letter from the Coordinator of org I volunteer with (strong letter) 3 letters from PI's (strong letters) 1 letter from a Physician (Only known me for a month) 2 letters from formecurrent MSTP directors who know me well (strong letters, but not sure how much weight these have)
Other stuff: Academic probation due to low GPA from years ago at community college for several semesters.

2024.05.14 18:01 mentalhealthcopilots Youth Mental Health Fund

Last month, the Government of Canada announced the new Youth Mental Health Fund. This will help younger Canadians access mental health care by reducing wait times and providing more mental health care options.
Many factors, such as school, starting a career, increases to the housing market, and the rising cost of living can contribute to challenges in accessing mental health care. The Youth Mental Health Fund will propose an investment of $500 million to help community health organizations provide more care for youth, and better equip organizations to refer youth to other accessible services.
“It is critical that youth have what they need to build a happy, healthy start in their adulthood. Mental health care is an essential part of ensuring every young Canadian can reach their full potential, and that helps Canada’s economy reach its full potential, too” (Government of Canada).

2024.05.14 17:39 PitifulHoneydew7302 21M, 6 figure income(pre-tax), 70k+ in debt

Hey folks, I (21M) posted a little while ago asking for information and advice on how to assess my debt a little more realistically. I spent most of my life extremely poor and had nothing. I was raised on the value that if you want something go and get it bc nobody is gonna hand it to you. For this reason I think I got carried away in life. Bit off more than I can chew per se. I’ve come to the realization that I can easily pay off the debt I’m in with some determination and discipline. My main struggle is my living situation. For context I am a traveling renewable energy technician. I spent the first 3 years of my career all over the country and just recently over the past 6 months decided to plant some roots where I am now in AZ/CA border. I currently live in a 30ft travel trailer. It’s not “ideal” but I bought it brand new a little over a year ago because I was tired of paying rent endlessly throwing away my paychecks, however, I realize now that what I’m doing isn’t much different. I still owe 28k on a 40k trailer and it only appraises for 15-18k. I’m tired of it and want to move into a home or room with one of my coworkers but due to the high DTI I have at this time I don’t think I could reasonably afford that. I have $7500 in CC, $11,000 in unsecured personal loan, $20,000 in auto loan, and $28,000 for my Travel trailer loan. I have a BASE salary of $77,500/ year. I do have some kickers (bonuses and weekend pay available) which bring my total gross income to well over 100k a year. My question is this, if you were in my shoes what kind of advice would you have for me? Is there a way that I can default on some of this debt? Settle? I want to start over… but I don’t think that Bankruptcy is an option due to my income. I want to invest my money and have something to show for the money I make but all of my assets at this time are depreciating.
Any help or guidance is well appreciated. Thanks in advance guys.

2024.05.14 16:43 Both-Tip-9904 Will my university affect my chances of choosing a specialization?

To put it simply, I am a government-sponsored international medical student in the UK. However, my university is by no means “prestigious”. I did extremely well in my UCAT, however as I undertook a foundation course rather than take the A levels I would imagine that my chances of transferring to another university such as kings college or manchester or even warwick are extremely low, if any. My goal has always been to pursue surgery, especially orthopedic or cardiac. I was always under the impression that what matters when getting accepted into a specific speciality is your CV/portfolio, your grades, and your character. But, in light of recent information that I received from a friend, who is at best a non-credible source, that some graduates had outstanding everything but were rejected from certain fields due to the name of their university alone, had me contemplating if I really chose a good university to pursue my dreams or not.
Some more information, I do not really care on where I train in to become a surgeon, whether its in the UK, Canada, USA, or whatever other country you could think of, but I really care about becoming an orthopod or cardiac surgeon.
So, again, my question is; Does the name of my university matter when trying to get in a career of surgery in the US, CA, or UK?
Thank you.

2024.05.14 14:44 Puzzleheaded_Tour671 What other opportunities does CA offer?

Hi guys!
I’m 23F and just gave my finals. Already cleared Group 1. I’ve been meaning to ask this for a long time but never got around it.
I know that post CA, one can go into taxes or audit. But what other lucrative options are there? So, I did my articleship in IDT for three years and I wanna switch and try something different. I really wanna explore.
Should I go for MBA? And if yes, what field? I know some of the other options are investment banking, CPA and CFA etc etc but are there any other options that are idkkk exciting? Finance field is hectic in general.
I’m not a fan of numbers and I really wanna get into a field which I might enjoy. My question seems vague but what other possibilities can I explore? I would love to go outside India as well.
I don’t mind diverting a bit from CA.
I do not want to specialise in GST and make a career out of it. Would really love your inputs!
Thank you so much.

2024.05.14 13:34 NotACareerBurner Guidance for a graduate whose is looking for a new path

Apologies for the millionth "what should I do with my career" post, but I would be very appreciative of some guidance.
After having a little experience under my belt from my Big4 private tax advisory job, and a lot of free time, I've been doing a lot of soul searching. And I've came to the conclusion that tax isn't going to be for me. I've been reflecting on what I've been enjoyed in the past as well as what i've been good at and bad at.
Uni Background:
Upsides of job:
Big Downside of job:
Loose ideas from whats around me:
Was anyone in a similar position that managed to figure out what they wanted? I would like to talk to my counsellor about this, but it feels too early and I would want some ideas in mind when talking to them.
Thanks for any advice.

2024.05.14 12:26 Sudden_Sky_7160 Defending against medical conservatorship when developmentally disabled (California)

I live in California. I'm 25 years old, autistic, and trans. My parents are threatening to apply for a medical limited conservatorship to keep me from medically transitioning. Based on my reading of the self-help page for limited conservatorships, this is possible if they can convince a judge that I'm incapable of making my own medical decisions. They don't want control of anything else. They're happy to let me keep handling my own money, career (I'm an engineer for the city we live in), and housing, for example. They just want medical control.
If they actually go through with it, how do I prove that I'm a capable adult in that specific area? Is there paperwork that would help? Letters from various medical professionals I've seen stating that I'm not completely out of my gourd or non-functional? Should I get a lawyer, and will a lawyer actually accept "I'm autistic but I need you to prove I'm the functional kind of autistic" as a case? Thanks.

2024.05.14 12:20 chanma50 'Back To Black' Review Thread

I will continue to update this post as reviews come in.
Rotten Tomatoes: Rotten
Critics Consensus: Back to Black's sympathetic approach to its subject's story is an overdue antidote to the tabloid treatment she often received in life, even if the end results are disappointingly pedestrian.
Score Number of Reviews Average Rating
All Critics 36% 69 4.50/10
Top Critics 38% 24 4.50/10
Metacritic: 49 (18 Reviews)
Sample Reviews:
The film’s snaky on-and-off power begins with the British actor Marisa Abela, whose lead performance nails Amy Winehouse in every look, mood, utterance, and musical expression. - Owen Gleiberman, Variety
Back to Black is, like its heroine, flawed and fallible but frequently very affecting. - Leslie Felperin, Hollywood Reporter
Tells the story of Amy Winehouse but shows no passion in telling it and has nothing to say about the events that transpire. It’s the utter minimum of what a biopic can be. - William Bibbiani, TheWrap
There are other, tougher, bleaker ways to put Winehouse’s life on screen – but Abela conveys her tenderness, and perhaps most poignantly of all her youth, so tellingly at odds with that tough image and eerily mature voice. 4/5 - Peter Bradshaw, Guardian
There are moments when Abela disappears and Winehouse bursts on to the screen, like a magic eye picture blinked fleetingly into focus. But the film is wildly uneven and prone to catastrophic misjudgments. 2/5 - Wendy Ide, Observer (UK)
Because of the cautious gloss, the film is perhaps less enlightening or truly tragic than it might have been. 3/5 - Tim Robey, Daily Telegraph (UK)
The final scene, in particular, with its completely and utterly baseless, sensationalist implications, made me physically gasp in horror. 1/5 - Hamish Macbain, London Evening Standard
The ending, of course, is sad... Yet, for all its faults, the film is more celebratory than tragic. 3/5 - Ed Potton, Times (UK)
Back to Black is a fitfully enjoyable little package that will do wonders for the careers of Abela and O’Connell. But unlike Winehouse’s oeuvre, it’s not worth taking seriously. It’s just too afraid of the dark. 2/5 - Charlotte O'Sullivan, Independent (UK)
The film seems too tame, too tasteful, too frightened of alienating the fans: everything that Winehouse was not. 2/5 - Tom Shone, Times (UK)
[Amy Winehouse's] music remains in a different creative galaxy to this dispiriting film, which is at once twee and ghoulish. 2/5 - Danny Leigh, Financial Times
Sure, you will learn more – and hear more of the original recordings – in Asif Kapadia’s great documentary Amy, but Taylor-Johnson does a decent job of making a tight drama from the same tragic yarn. 3/5 - Donald Clarke, Irish Times
This is a middle-of-the road biopic about a musician who was anything but. It’s not great and it’s not terrible. 3/5 - Stephen Romei, The Australian
It has such reverence for Winehouse that it lacks the honesty the 2015 Oscar-winning documentary Amy was able to present. 2.5/5 - Wenlei Ma, The Nightly (AU)
A solid performance let down by a script that cherry-picks the facts and ultimately tells us less than we already know. Watch Asif Kapadia’s Amy instead. 2/5 - Hayley Campbell, Empire Magazine
Offers a pallid account of Winehouse’s story, ironing out some thornier issues, and bringing little that’s new, either in fresh revelations or distinctive angles on the familiar. - Jonathan Romney, Screen International
This is better than I expected (although my expectations were low). It does seem softened at the edges, and one can never forgive a falling-in-love montage set at London Zoo -- ever -- but I (mostly) didn’t cringe and it is respectful, if painful. - Deborah Ross, The Spectator
In her attempt to put the woman back at the centre of her own life, Taylor-Johnson has at least captured an addictive personality and achieved a powerful portrait of doomed love. - Kate Mossman, New Statesman
It is as salacious and cruel as any tabloid cutting from the noughties – only invested in the bloody ballet pump left in the street, not the complexities of living a very public life with addiction. 1/5 - Rogan Graham, Little White Lies
Everyone involved in the film approaches the late artist with love and respect, but its tawdry instincts and misguided sense of responsibility let her memory down. C- - Vikram Murthi, indieWire
Bizarrely, the one thematic thread that Back to Black does seek to tie its tale together with is the singer’s desire to have a child. 1.5/4 - Ross McIndoe, Slant Magazine
Like Winehouse herself, the film teeters on the edge, hovering restlessly between genre-subversive brilliance that complicates celebratory narratives about artistic genius, and well-worn, re-hashed tropes about tragic women. - Rebecca Harrison, Sight & Sound
A strong cast, in particular a stirring performance from Marisa Abela, is not enough to effectively convey the chaos and the tragedy central to the story of such a beloved artist. 2/5 - Linda Marric, HeyUGuys
Its punchlines lack punch, [but] what it does have is a frankly dynamite central turn from Marisa Abela. - Mark Kermode, Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube)

2024.05.14 10:46 Fast-Copy491 How do you feel when your younger sibling is doing well in life, and you are still struggling to get your shit together?

The constant comparison in my family, with my younger brother, is slowly driving me crazy. I( F34) lready struggle with anxiety, depression, and a thousand chronic health conditions. I haven't done well in my career, at least haven't done what was expected of me. My brother has had good academic records, has finished his CA in first attempt, and is employed with a 12 LPA package, at age 25. I feel my self worth dwindling and the comparisons are not helping at all. I am very happy for him, but I can't help but feel jealous. I envy that he doesn't have any health issue, he was not abused by our mother( because- boy), I was, because I did not convert to christianity like she wanted and he did. As much as I don't want to compare myself with him or anybody, it does hurt me.

2024.05.14 09:43 Party-Afternoon-3645 Want to take pcm but not sure??

Seniors, i got 83% in boards with science and maths being the lowest. I like science but I am pretty scared. No one is pressuring me to take anything so, it's all upto me. I would have had no problems opting for science if I was more inclined towards these subjects "naturally".
Would i have time for other things if i become a pcm student?
careers in mind: architecture, data analyst/scientist, CA (i am good at theory subjects like eco, accounts but have no real interest in finance), astronomy/meteorology, UX designer, Teaching etc.
My brain feels scattered all over

2024.05.14 08:42 Totally_not_blue CONFUSED AND CONCERNED

Job market = dogshit?!?!? I 15m am looking at the future. And it looks weird... everyone says that if you arent making atleast 100k your usless. But every job I see even with a three year certification class are peaking at like 78k. I have tried my best to set up a non collage route to sucsess. Everything I have heard has influenced my plan. "Networking yap" has made me set up connections as often as possible. I have a insane linkedin friend list full of local buisness owners and millionares who I met with in person either by chance at a gym or on purpose for networking purposes. My gf is very wealthy and well off. Her family also knows every major buisness owner in town and has insane connections. I live in south lake tahoe AKA CA/NV boarder area. I grew up very very poor with a horrible traumatic childhood and refuse to let my future children suffer that fate. Im willing to sacrifice everything but my loved ones for a good career but it seems like everyone hiring wants 20 years of expirience just to make 30k... anyone have advice? Im strong and tall. Im fit and I do amature boxing and compete professionaly in climbing competitions. I get mostly As on tests but very rarley do assigments in shcool. So I can work phisicly like as a arborman or as a computer concultant. No job is out of my reach with one very large exeption. NO COLLAGE i refuse to put myself in debt for that bs and Im not build for shcool. I hate shcool with a passion and would rather shit in my hands and clap than prolong usless shcooling. Im open to trade shcool or certificatuon classes but no collage. Anybody have advice? I have a clean criminal record, the only thing that might stuck out is diagnosed major deppresive dissorder but I have that under control. If you think you have an Idea for my employment please lmk.
