2024.05.14 22:00 VivaldiVerao Body of the unidentified Brazilian woman who spent 24 years in a coma is buried

Edit: Original post was deleted due to being a repost. Check the first post here. This is an update post https://www.reddit.com/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/1bfnp5o/unknown_woman_is_hit_by_a_car_and_has_lived_in_a/
Clarinha has been buried at Maruípe Municipal Cemetery today, May 14th, at 1:45 PM. Her funeral was attended by hospital staff who took care of her. Coronel Jorge Potratz, the doctor who watched over her during these last 24 years stated "It is a great relief to close this chapter, allow her spirit to rest properly. The cycle is closing, but her story remains open." He placed a white rose in her hands before the casket was closed.
She'll have a tombstone with her picture, the name "Clarinha" and a bible verse that still has not been choosen.
My write-up on the case:
Okay, so it's my first write-up here. I had always wondered why Jane/John doe cases were so famous in English speaking countries, while here in Brazil lots of unindentified people pass away everyday and no one bats an eye. We don't even have a name like "Jane doe" for those people, I think.
Well, there's a notorious case of an unindentified woman who passed away recently that caught my attention. On June 12th, 2000, a woman who had been hit by a car was brought to São Lucas State Hospital in Vitória, Espírito Santo state. It was lovers' day in Brazil (our version of Valentine's) and she was a white woman who didn't have any form of identification on her. I wish I could find more details on the incident, but I can't. She was rescued by an ambulance and was uncouncious when she got to the hospital, and spent the next 24 years that way.
It was noted she had a c-section scar, which meant she had had at least one child, but no one ever came to look for her. They tried to identify her so she could receive some sort of pension, but they weren't able to. On the next year, she was transfered to the Military Police Hospital and has been there ever since, under the care of Dr. Jorge Potratz, and has been named Clarinha by hospital staff. Dr. Jorge had been taking care of her as if she's his own daughter, paying for personal care items for her with his own money. Besides that, Brazil's Unified Health System allowed her to be hospitlized for the past 24 years without anyone having to pay for her healthcare. She didn't need any kind of life support besides a feed tube due to problems in swallowing caused by the accident. A doctor noted that in the scale for comas, which goes up to 15, she's around 7 or 8.
On 2016, TV show Fantástico did a segment about her, which brought the attention to the case. Several missing people families came from all over the country to check on her, but it was no success. A woman from Minas Gerais state thought she could be her missing sister. Her sister left the town of Ipanema on 1999 stating she was going to sell clothes. She left all her documents and 2 kids behind. It wasn't her.
They tried to take her fingerprints, but since her hands remained closed as a result of the accident, her fingertips got all roughed up and they were unable to get a clear print. Norma, a nurse who took care of her, said she called the name of a missing person who was thought to be her and Clarinha opened her eyes for a moment, the article doesn't specifies but I think it was proven it wasn't her.
Clarinha passed away on March 14th, 2024 after sufferig bronchoaspiration (no idea of what it is). They think she was around 40 or 50 years old. The police compared her DNA and figerprints to 12 missing people cases and found no match. Dr. Jorge Potratz took care of all the legal requirements for her to not be buried as an unindentified person.
Personal comments I have regarding the case:

2024.05.14 21:57 Rcp-509 The gatekeepers of the MRI

I was diagnosed with mild ddd from a VA Xray last year. In their diagnosis letter they said to consider getting an MRI if it gets worse or show symptoms of radiculopathy. The VA team nurse I was in contact with kinda just blew me off when I asked to get one. Then I went in to see my VA pcp Dr again and he said an MRI wouldn’t show anything different and I don’t need it. So I tried going to a civilian Dr, they said they could request an MRI but it may or may not get approved, and they would usually require physical therapy before moving up to an MRI.
My whole reasoning for trying to get it is mostly from what other people have said on this community. It can show a lot more issues including nerve damage, and help as solid evidence for a claim.
Right now I could either keep trying to get it from the VA. Or I could do a 6 hour round trip and pay $600 at one of those walk in MRI places.
What do y’all think, Is it worth trying to get it?

What To Do If You Think Someone Is Unfit To Drive?

How To Tell A Parent They Can't Drive Anymore - What Experts Say

Navigating the difficult conversation about taking away driving privileges from a senior loved one can be heart-wrenching. As a family, it's crucial for you to ensure that age-related cognitive decline doesn't pose a risk to the senior driver and other motorists. Before considering such a conversation, it's important to objectively determine if your senior family member is indeed an unsafe driver. So what do you do if you think someone is unfit to drive? In this article, we'll explore the use of elderly car tracking devices as a means to assess driving ability and make informed decisions to keep everyone safe on the road.

Ensuring Senior Loved Ones' Road Safety With GPS Tracking

GPS tracking systems have become a powerful tool in promoting road safety. No matter your opinion on monitoring technology, it's hard to deny its impact on keeping roads safer. Companies use car tracking systems to manage employee driving activity, while parents use them as a discreet method to monitor teen driving and prevent speeding. For concerned family members, these systems offer a way to check on senior relatives and ensure they're still able to drive safely.
Although you might associate tracking devices for seniors with portable personal systems for those with Alzheimer's or dementia, car tracking is actually quite common. Here are some reasons why families use GPS to keep an eye on seniors and make sure they're safe on the road:
  • Track visits to doctors' offices, nursing homes, and independent living facilities.
  • Observe driving abilities and watch for warning signs that it's time to reconsider driving privileges.
  • Quickly locate seniors in case of an emergency medical situation requiring assistance.
  • Ensure your loved one is safe behind the wheel.
  • Allow multiple family members to check a senior's location with a free mobile app.
When a senior refuses to stop driving, the responsibility falls on the family to oversee their ability to drive safely. Health conditions, such as Alzheimer's, and other factors can influence an elderly person's driving capabilities. Retaining driving privileges is crucial for seniors who wish to avoid full-time in-home care and maintain their independence. GPS vehicle trackers provide the data needed to identify unsafe senior drivers and determine when it's time for the family to contact the Department of Motor Vehicles.

2024.05.14 21:55 SeeCrew106 [Debunk] Ivermectin is effective against COVID-19 and otherwise caused no harm

Some people still swear up and down that ivermectin is actually effective against COVID-19. This is false. They also insist ivermectin has far fewer side-effecs than the Coronavirus vaccine. This is also false. I'm going to prove it to you, but whether you are capable of accepting evidence such as listed below is something I obviously have no control over. I can try, and you can keep an open mind.
First of all, ivermectin has many side-effects, ranging from innocuous to severe.[1]
To wit:

General

Ivermectin is well tolerated compared to other microfilaricidal agents (i.e., thiabendazole, diethylcarbamazine). Adverse reactions (i.e., pruritus, fever, rash, myalgia, headache) occur commonly during the first 3 days after treatment and appear to be related to the extent of parasitic infection and systemic mobilization and killing of microfilariae. The majority of reactions can usually be treated with aspirin, acetaminophen and/or antihistamines. Adverse effects tend to occur with lesser frequency during periods of retreatment.

Ocular

Ocular side effects have included eyelid edema, anterior uveitis, blurred vision, conjunctivitis, limbitis, punctate opacity, keratitis, abnormal sensation in the eyes, and chorioretinitis/choroiditis; however, these effects are also associated with the disease onchocerciasis. Loss of vision has occurred rarely but usually resolved without corticosteroid treatment. Conjunctival hemorrhage has been reported during postmarketing experience in patients treated for onchocerciasis.

Other

Worsening of Mazzotti reactions, including arthralgia, synovitis, lymph node enlargement and tenderness, pruritus, skin involvement (including edema, papular and pustular or frank urticarial rash), and fever, has been reported during the first 4 days following treatment for onchocerciasis.

Nervous system

Nervous system side effects have included dizziness, headache, somnolence, vertigo, and tremor. Serious or fatal encephalopathy has been reported rarely in patients with onchocerciases, and heavily infected with Loa loa, either spontaneously or after treatment with ivermectin. Seizures have been reported during postmarketing experience.

Gastrointestinal

Gastrointestinal side effects have included anorexia, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal distention.

Other

Other side effects have included asthenia, fatigue, abdominal pain, chest discomfort, facial edema, and peripheral edema.

Hematologic

Hematologic side effects have included decreased leukocyte count (3%), eosinophilia (3%), and increased hemoglobin (1%). Hematomatous swellings associated with prolonged prothrombin times have been reported, but the clinical significance is unknown. Leukopenia and anemia have been reported in at least one patient.

Hepatic

Hepatic side effects have included elevated ALT and/or AST. Elevated liver enzymes, elevated bilirubin, and hepatitis have been reported during postmarketing experience.

Cardiovascular

Cardiovascular side effects have included tachycardia and orthostatic hypotension. EKG changes, including prolonged PR interval, flattened T waves and peaked T waves, have been reported in single cases. Hypotension (primarily orthostatic hypotension) has been reported during postmarketing experience.

Dermatologic

Dermatologic side effects have included pruritus, rash, and urticaria. Toxic epidermal necrolysis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome have been reported during postmarketing experience.

Respiratory

Respiratory side effects have included worsening bronchial asthma, laryngeal edema, and dyspnea.

Musculoskeletal

Musculoskeletal side effects have included myalgia.

Renal

Renal side effects have included rare transient proteinuria.
I tried to get incidence rates for these side-effects, but in some if not most instances, the answer given for these side-effects is either simply "unknown" or they're just not shown. Imagine telling this to anti-vaxers: if they have at least a consistent set of beliefs, this should deeply alarm them, shouldn't it?
Some people actually did take the horse dewormer version out of sheer desperation and got really sick, were hospitalized or worse: they died.
  1. In New Mexico, two people died after taking a deworming drug for horses and other livestock to treat COVID-19.[2]
  2. The FDA received multiple reports of patients who required medical support and hospitalization after self-medicating with Ivermectin intended for horses.[3]
  3. There was a significant increase in calls to poison control centers due to misuse of Ivermectin. Texas saw a 550% spike in poison control calls due to people ingesting horse and cow dewormer.[4]
  4. People poisoned themselves with the horse-deworming version to thwart COVID-19, resulting in an uptick in calls to poison control centers.[5]
Ivermectin was consistently found to be ineffective in treating COVID-19:
  1. A systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Virology Journal evaluated the efficacy of Ivermectin for COVID-19 patients based on current peer-reviewed RCTs. The study concluded that Ivermectin did not have any significant effect on outcomes of COVID-19 patients.[6]
  2. A Cochrane meta-analysis of 11 eligible trials examining the efficacy of Ivermectin for the treatment of COVID-19 published through April 2022 concluded that Ivermectin has no beneficial effect for people with COVID-19.[7]
  3. An article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) concluded that taking 400 mcg/kg Ivermectin for three days, when compared with a placebo, did not significantly improve the chances for a patient with mild to moderate symptoms of COVID-19 to avoid hospitalization.[8]
  4. A study published on News Medical concluded that in COVID-19 outpatients with mild or moderate illness, Ivermectin use for three days at a dose of 400 μg/kg showed no significant improvement in the time to sustained recovery compared to those who received placebos.[9]
The unwarranted hype surrounding ivermectin can be traced back to its promotion on the Joe Rogan Experience.[10]
Public interest in ivermectin ballooned following Joe Rogan’s podcasts. “On a national level Rogan’s podcast was a tipping point,” said Keenan Chen, an investigative researcher with First Draft News, an organization that tracks misinformation. (Rogan, who has previously expressed hesitancy to vaccines, announced in September he had contracted Covid-19. He claimed to be taking ivermectin among several other treatments.)
Joe Rogan took a cocktail of Big Pharmatm meds which, with the exception of monoclonal antibodies, were not indicated for his situation. In fact, some of the medication he took could have made things worse.[11] Rogan probably didn't get seriously ill because he's fit and without significant comorbidities. The one thing that would have actually been the most effective was the vaccine, which he refused to take.
Many others weren't as lucky as Joe was. I suggest you follow the footnotes and see for yourself. Especially the first one.[12][13]
Other than ivermectin, coronavirus vaccines are also a subject both Joe Rogan and his guests have shamelessly lied about numerous times, which could have caused medical harm to people who bought into it, and probably did. The most prominent guest which comes to mind is RFK Jr.
RFK Jr.'s influence is so odious, I am comfortable saying he probably contributed to thousands of unnecessary deaths in total. One incident in which 83 people (mostly children) died is particularly disgusting:[14]
In June 2019, Kennedy and his wife, the actress Cheryl Hines, visited Samoa, a trip Kennedy later wrote was arranged by Edwin Tamasese, a Samoan local anti-vaccine influencer.
Vaccine rates had plummeted after two children died in 2018 from a measles vaccine that a nurse had incorrectly mixed with a muscle relaxant. The government suspended the vaccine program for months. By the time Kennedy arrived, health authorities were trying to get back on track.
He was treated as a distinguished guest, traveling in a government vehicle, meeting with the prime minister and, according to Kennedy, many health officials and the health minister.
He also met with anti-vaccine activists, including Tamasese and another well-known influencer, Taylor Winterstein, who posted a photograph of herself and Kennedy on her Instagram.
“The past few days have been profoundly monumental for me, my family and for this movement to date,” she wrote, adding hashtags including #investigatebeforeyouvaccinate.
A few months later, a measles epidemic broke out in Samoa, killing 83 people, mostly infants and children in a population of about 200,000.
Public health officials said at the time that anti-vaccine misinformation had made the nation vulnerable.
The crisis of low vaccination rates and skepticism created an environment that was “ripe for the picking for someone like RFK to come in and in assist with the promotion of those views,” said Helen Petousis-Harris, a vaccinologist from New Zealand who worked on the effort to build back trust in the measles vaccine in Samoa.
Petousis-Harris recalled that local and regional anti-vaccine activists took their cues from Kennedy, whom she said “sits at the top of the food chain as a disinformation source.”
“They amplified the fear and mistrust, which resulted in the amplification of the epidemic and an increased number of children dying. Children were being brought for care too late,” she said.
The pandemic is over. Ivermectin wasn't effective. On the one hand we should move on, on the other hand, there should be some accountability for people who pushed this lie, especially those who benefited from it financially.[10][15]

Can't check in online
Looks like there's two options. One is the select paid seat option and the other is quick check in which gives you random free seats. I did the quick check in and it brought me to a page with a single button. The health declaration button. When I click it, nothing happens. The title says something about passport details but there's no form or anything to input that data. I also tried selecting seats and the first flight doesn't have any free options so I chose one but that requires you to pay the additional amount which I can't do because they don't support PayPal. My local bank card from Germany isn't an international one so I'm out of luck there too.

2024.05.14 21:36 weirdballz STUDY TIPS FOR ATI: How I achieved a level 3 on my ATI exams

I would like to share some tips that helped me do well on all my ATI exams! For reference, I got a level 3 on all but one ATI exam! Fundamentals was my first ATI exam ever which I got a 2, and it helped shaped the way I continued to study for ATI. I hope this helps anyone who is either struggling with ATI or wanting to increase their scores.
How I utilized ATI textbooks:
Practice Exams/Dynamic Quizzes
Extra Tips for ATI
Outside resources
Test taking prioritization strategies you have to understand:
Other test taking strategies
It’s true that ATI will test you on things from other courses (some you haven’t taken yet), but the majority of it will be over the course you are studying for. The goal isn’t to get every question correctly. The goal is to use prior knowledge and test taking strategies to help you at least narrow down to 2 answer choices, and hopefully choose the right one. After doing a bunch of questions, you start to see patterns and understand how ATI wants you to choose the answer.
I know this is a lot, but I just wanted to be as thorough as possible. Please let me know if you have any questions! I am happy to help! 😊

2024.05.14 21:20 ZeroExNihil Elemental Magic (again)

Well, thought this system out while having a shower. It's really simple and basic.
I'm not gonna use it in my world because it doesn't fit the "thematic", so feel free to use and adapt to your tastes and needs.
As the title implies, it's a system composed of 4 elements: Earth, Water, Air, and Fire.
The users are called Elementals and, to make it short, they are basically like logias from One Piece, that is, their bodies have aspects of the elements they control. They do not need to eat or drink as long as there's their element present, even breathing isn't required. On the other hand, they cannot create the element, only control through direct contact or absorb it, but it will have consequences. (below)
- Earth Elementals: have sturdy bodies and great strength.
Absorbing their element will cause them to become slower and heavier, but also sturdier and stronger.
- Water Elementals: have flexible bodies capable of stretching and distribuiting impact/force.
Absorbing their element will allow them for more room to stretch (as it cause their member to get thinner and unstable), but their bodies will losing their ability to distribuit impact the more they absorb.
- Air Elementals: have pseudo-intangible bodies (ever tried to punch smoke?) and since their bodies are feather light, they can jump and stay in the air for a good amount of time. Also, they have a similar ability to Water as they can expand and contract their bodies, like smoke. The more they expand, less denser and more unstable (it happens at a ratio faster than water's).
Absorbing their elements reduces their pseudo-flight and intangibility while granting them more room to expand.
- Fire Elementals: have bodies similar to Air regarding intangibility, even better as they do not lose form (almost like a ghost), however, they cannot expand. Instead, they are able to create an explosion by hitting something, be it their on bodies or another object.
Their main aborption comes from the heat (sunlight or any other source of heat). Doing so increases their explosion ability but causes symptons similar to a heatstroke while also making the explosion more susceptible to happen unwillingly (like handling glicerin).
Take note that all Elementals are immune to their own "pure" elements, fire being the exception as it is naturally affected by cold.

2024.05.14 21:07 TheThingyGuy Should I quit nursing school?

I am struggling with whether or not I should quit nursing school.
Here are the reasons why I shouldn’t quit:
1. The school I go to is affordable and nearby and the BSN is one of the only bachelor’s degrees it offers. I don’t think I’m able to transfer with a different school to focus on getting a bachelor’s or masters (just some viable degree) in something else (unless I decide to focus on STEM) because I have too many credit hours.
2. I will get a degree and license that I can use to get a job that’s in high demand. With a BSN I will allegedly make good money.
3. The work is rewarding.
4. I’ve picked something. Most people haven’t even settled on a major. I am only 20 years old, and I’ve already picked a major. How many people can say that?
5. I’ve already invested all this time, money and energy into this. Quitting would be a waste.
6. Most people don’t get a career in something they enjoy, because the things they enjoy will not make them money. Especially artists/writers, which is what I am. Only a lucky few from that group seem to make it doing the things they actually enjoy.
7. My parents seem to have it in their heads that I have to keep doing this and that I do enjoy and can handle it. They are not letting me quit unless I convince them really well.
Here’s the reasons why I should quit.
1. After doing a couple semesters worth of work related to nursing, I have recognized that I lack a passion for it.
2. I fail to see its appeal. I don’t understand why my classmates seem to enjoy or look forward to it. I have to force myself to enjoy it.
3. This degree is NOT just a degree. I need to be doing something nursing related with it, and with it, I would STILL need to be doing patient care for a fairly long stretch of time before getting a different job that would still require the degree.
4. The only thing I even remotely liked was clinicals and that was only because of the parts where I’m talking to people. Felt neutral towards the work, hated reading and writing paperwork.
5. I hate talking about nursing. On my own time, I am always looking for conversation topics concerning anything but nursing. I also lack an interest in it outside of school. On my own time, I am never watching medical TV shows or doing anything healthcare related. When I’m relaxing, I am trying to avoid nursing as much as possible. I see it as a chore, and not as something to look forward to doing.
6. I cannot see myself in this career. Long shifts, high stakes work environment, colleagues I can’t relate to, continuing education every 2 years, bad pay for something I don’t like, some possible traumatic experiences, verbal abuse from patients and colleagues, work NOT being as easy to get as people make it out to be, etc.
7. It does not come easy to me. I struggle with every facet of the schooling and need to REALLY push myself to succeed. For instance, in a prerequisite class, the thing that tripped me up and made me need to retake it was checking someone’s blood pressure.
8. Nursing doesn’t make good money. It is something you choose to do because you enjoy it (if even a little bit!). If you hate it, you need to look somewhere else. (Now, what makes me doubt this point is that with a BSN I CAN make good money, from what I’ve heard…) Every nurse I’ve spoken to has shared the sentiment that you should not be doing it just for the money.
9. My professors have all asked me if I really want to be doing this, my peers seem to also have noted that all I seem to talk about around them is how much I hate nursing school. I know it is absolutely normal to hate the schooling part, but I cannot see myself enjoying working with ANYTHING related to the subject, either.

2024.05.14 21:02 FireFight1234567 US v. Kittson: Appellant’s Opening Brief

Opening brief here.

Statute at Issue

18 USC § 922(o):
(1) Except as provided in paragraph (2), it shall be unlawful for any person to transfer or possess a machinegun.
(2) This subsection does not apply with respect to—
(A) a transfer to or by, or possession by or under the authority of, the United States or any department or agency thereof or a State, or a department, agency, or political subdivision thereof; or
(B) any lawful transfer or lawful possession of a machinegun that was lawfully possessed before the date this subsection takes effect. (That is, 5/19/1986)

Background

In January of 2020, ATF Agent Jason Weber negotiated with Kittson through Nikki, an informant, regarding the purchase of an unstamped WWII-era Russian-manufactured PPSh-41, which was not under Kittson’s possession and had a nonfunctional drum mag. Weber was then re-directed to another home under construction, and the renovator (not the homeowner) named Ray Bohanan had firearms including the PPSh. Bohanan, who happened to be a gun aficionado and a “survivalist” and was planning to retreat to a bunker he built in rural Oregon, had been convicted of a domestic violence misdemeanor and charged with narcotics possession, so he was prohibited under 18 USC §§ 922(g)(3) & (g)(9), respectively. However, Bohanon was never arrested and died in June of 2020. Kittson got indicted under 18 USC §§ 922(o) (Count 1) & 922(g)(1) (Count 2) and got arrested on May 28, 2021 per the arrest warrant.

Second Amendment Issue

At district level, besides citing Henry still being good law as Bruen didn’t disturb Heller and Miller, the government provided laws forbidding carrying weapons in terrorem populi, none of which are relevantly similar let alone distinctly similar to banning mere possession of certain arms. Judge Immergut (the same one for Measure 114) upheld the Hughes Amendment (18 USC § 922(o)) by citing the former. The problem with Henry, which was decided pre-Bruen, is that it used the fact that full autos are not in common use today (i.e. unusual) because of the Hughes Amendment. By using “dangerous and unusual”, the defender in the brief says the Henry panel used interest balancing to uphold the Hughes Amendment. In footnote 6, the 3rd Circuit en banc panel in the Range case warned courts to not latch onto and “overread” certain phrases like “law-abiding, responsible citizens” (and, though not mentioned, “presumptively lawful”) to uphold laws in question, especially via interest-balancing. The problem with Henry was that it didn’t use text, history, and tradition on whether full autos constituted “arms” under the plain text and whether the ban on possessing full autos is consistent with the Nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation (or, it didn’t faithfully apply Heller). Rather, Henry used purely empirical and data analysis to uphold the ban and conclude that full autos are “dangerous and unusual”.
As we can see, one can say that the judge used interest balancing by saying that their own understanding of “unusual” derived from the numbers instead of using the THT method to understand what “unusual” historically meant. Personally speaking, I find that the evidence of interest-balancing in the Henry case is not really obvious, and the main error is that they misread Heller, especially its dicta, which “is inconceivable that [one] would rest [his or her] interpretation of the basic meaning of any guarantee of the Bill of Rights upon such a footnoted dictum in a case where the point [like the full auto] was not at issue and was not argued” per Heller’s footnote 25. The brief also cites the Duarte opinion as a good example of a very good application of text, history, and tradition of permanent disarmament of certain “people” like “felons” despite Heller saying that the law in question was “presumptively lawful.”

Summary of Other Issues

As mentioned earlier, Kittson claimed that he never actually or constructively possessed a machine gun. However, Kittson could have been charged for aiding and abetting the machinegun transfer, but defender claims that is defensible on 2 grounds. Statutorily speaking, the transferee was an ATF agent, so the transfer is lawful under § 922(o)(2)(A). The part where he can get criminally charged is Kittson’s lack of knowledge of Weber’s government status. Factually speaking, the PPSh-41 (which was historically unreliable mainly due to the drum mag) was nonfunctional because the magazine it was sold with was nonfunctional and incapable of being repaired to function (hmm, reminds me of the government saying that one need not have a magazine in order for a gun to function), so they unsuccessfully claimed that this wasn’t classifiable as a machinegun. That fact, however, was “omitted,” as Judge Immergut in the jury instructions said that a functioning magazine need not be equipped for a weapon to qualify as a full auto. Judge Immergut also didn’t allow the jury to factor in 922(o)(2)(A) (government exemptions) when giving the verdict, which deprived Kittson of his right to confront the charges and evidence against him and present a defense. Finally, the sentencing proceeding violated Kittson’s right to due process and a fair and impartial adjudicator. Judge Immergut’s fact findings were based on her personal practice as an Oregon state judge, not on evidence produced by the government. In this case, there was no evidence regarding some state judicial procedure relating to Kittson’s prior convictions produced by the government, but Judge Immergut decided to factor in anyway by awarding 1 criminal history point. By doing so, the court made itself a witness, thereby abandoning the requirement of neutrality.

2024.05.14 20:44 chick3n-lil $45 FLIGHT

Can anyone confirm her claim of the $45 round trip flight tickets? I found on Frontier's website for the deals "Fares are nonrefundable; one-way to select markets, and do not require roundtrip purchase." and while I do see an option for Dallas to San Diego, I don't see any options listed for departures from CA that would get her anywhere close to home on the discounted route list.

2024.05.14 20:00 Legal_Carpet_7978 Orthodontist From Hell: Failed Palatal Expansion

I’m reaching out to share a cautionary tale about my recent experience with orthodontic treatment gone wrong. I want to shed light on my situation, and seek advice on how to navigate this current situation.
Background:
I received orthodontic treatment from Dr. Nancy Phan in San Jose CA. During our initial consultation, she was pressed for time and sped through the explanation of my treatment plan. All I understood from her rapid explanation was that she recommended a palatal expander to widen my upper & lower jaw. However, what followed was a nightmare that left me with damaged teeth and a mountain of dental bills.
Dr. Nancy Phan has a practice called Care Orthodontics, where she has a bunch of watered down assistants doing her job for her. It's literally a pump and dump orthodontist place where they try to manage as many patients as possible. As a result, Dr. Nancy Phan doesn't have any assistants helping her while she's treating you. She literally holds the vacuum, water spray, and drill all at the same time... To me, this is the equivalent of a nurse giving you surgery, or the surgeon is performing surgery without any assistants nearby.
The Problem:
During the installation of the palatal expander, my orthodontist failed to properly assess the condition of my molars. One of these molars had a pre-existing fracture, which my orthodontist was aware of but chose to ignore. As a result, the appliance was placed in a way that directly impacted the roots of two of my molars.
The Consequences:
Within weeks of having the palatal expander installed, I started experiencing excruciating pain in the affected molars. A visit to my dentist confirmed the worst: both molars had sustained significant damage to their roots and required immediate intervention. I underwent root canal treatments followed by the placement of crowns on both molars, not to mention the emotional and physical toll of dealing with such dental trauma.
Legal Considerations:
Now, here’s where things get tricky. It’s clear that my orthodontist’s negligence led to the damage to my teeth. They failed to obtain clearance from my dentist before proceeding with the treatment, and they disregarded crucial information about the condition of my teeth. This raises serious questions about the standard of care provided by the orthodontist.
How to Proceed:
This experience has been extremely traumatic and sad for me. Has anyone faced a similar situation? Seeking advice on navigating the denial and addressing the dental damage.

2024.05.14 19:48 elise_june Traveling with a pet in the cabin

Hello everyone,
I'm reaching out to inquire if any of you have experience traveling with a pet in the cabin on an intercontinental flight lasting 12 to 13 hours, I would be traveling from South America, including a transfer at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, before heading to Berlin. I'm particularly interested in hearing your recommendations and any challenges you may have encountered.
My furry companion is a small Shih Tzu, and I've been read that the airline specifies a kennel size of 46 x 28 x 24 cm for pets traveling under the front seat. However, my pet happens to be 3 cm taller than the prescribed limit. I'm curious whether the airline measures the kennel or the pet before boarding. Additionally, I'm wondering if there's a possibility of upgrading to an economy comfort seat for a bit extra, particularly the ones with extra- free space in front (not the ones next to the emergency exit), and whether pets are permitted in such seating areas.
I'm concerned that the excess height might lead to a requirement for my pet to travel in the plane's cargo hold. Avoiding this scenario is my top priority.
Any insights or advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Map Updates

New Map - Forgotten Ruins

A new Map comes to the world of Dead by Daylight, found in The Decimated Borgo Realm. A tower standing tall alone, but what is above ground hides a new world underground. A prison area where Vittorio Toscano was thrown in for some time. On the other side of the dungeon, the Alchemist room is found, where a scholar can learn secrets of the world, or the dimensions that surround the universe of the Entity.

Decimated Borgo Realm Update

The red lighting was a big issue in the realm of The Decimated Borgo. The art and lighting team took care to make the realm more accessible to all players and bring a different ambiance to the maps.

2024.05.14 18:55 rumayday Boeing 727 pilot attempted to land on a highway

Boeing 727 pilot attempted to land on a highway
On the evening of September 19, 1976, Boeing 727-2F2 aircraft belonging to Turkish Airlines was operating a flight from Istanbul to Antalya. There were 8 crew members and 146 passengers on board.
Boeing 727 Turkish Airlines
Aircraft was being piloted by the first officer. Also in the cockpit were captain, flight engineer and technician. At some point, captain left the cockpit. The first officer saw lights ahead of the Turkish city Isparta. He assumed that the aircraft was already approaching its destination – Antalya. Pilot contacted the airport dispatcher and requested a straight-in approach for landing. Subsequently, without permission from the absent captain, he began descending.
During the descent, pilot switched from instrument to visual flight. Shortly after, the airport tower dispatcher informed that the aircraft was neither visually observed nor on radar. However, at 4000 meters above ground, the first officer saw runway lights and began a visual approach for landing. He then responded to controller: "Should I believe you or my own eyes?"
Aircraft was 150 meters above ground when the captain entered the cockpit. He horrifiedly discovered that the plane was descending onto a busy highway in Isparta. The first officer mistook the lights on this highway for those of the runway. Pilots pulled the controls back and set the engines to takeoff thurst... But it was too late. Systems responded too slowly, causing the aircraft unable to gain altitude. It struck a hill with its right wing, then crashed into the ground and completely destroyed. All 154 people on board died.
The sequence of events was reconstructed thanks to the "black box" recordings. Investigators found that the first officer, instead of strictly flying by instruments as required at night, switched to visual flight. Crew believed that dark area in front of the aircraft was Mediterranean Sea, but it was actually mountains. Additionally, crew mistakenly identified city lights of Isparta as those of Antalya. Furthermore, three days before the crash, system informing pilots of the aircraft's distance to Antalya airport malfunctioned, which contributed to the disaster.

2024.05.14 18:40 Professional_Disk131 The Benefits of Investing in Gold: Why It’s a Good Decision

The Benefits of Investing in Gold: Why It’s a Good Decision
In the vast universe of investment opportunities, gold stands out not just for its glitter but for its enduring value and historical significance. The allure of gold has not diminished over the centuries; instead, it has woven itself into the fabric of financial stability and wealth preservation. Herein, we delve into why investing in gold is not only a prudent decision but one that could safeguard your financial future in ways that other assets cannot.
Why Investing in Gold is a Good Decision
The decision to include gold in one’s investment portfolio is driven by several compelling factors. First and foremost, gold is universally recognized for its intrinsic value. Unlike paper currency, whose value can be eroded by inflation or government policies, gold’s worth is not tied to the performance of a particular economy. This unique characteristic makes it a sought-after asset for those looking to preserve their wealth over time.
Moreover, the resilience of gold becomes particularly evident during periods of market volatility. When stocks and bonds are buffeted by the storms of financial markets, gold often remains a beacon of stability. Its price movements are not directly correlated with those of other assets, making it an excellent tool for diversification. This uncorrelated behavior is a testament to gold’s standing as a safe haven in times of economic uncertainty.
Lastly, the liquidity of gold is another factor that contributes to its attractiveness as an investment. Gold can be easily bought or sold in various forms, from physical bars and coins to gold-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs). This ease of transaction ensures that investors can quickly adjust their positions in response to changing economic conditions, enhancing gold’s appeal as a versatile asset.

https://preview.redd.it/gwqvievb7f0d1.png?width=988&format=png&auto=webp&s=a9a06742c9ad2a1a66bf34036b9c606c86a504d7
Historical Performance of Gold as an Investment
The historical performance of gold is a testament to its enduring value and appeal as an investment. Over the centuries, gold has not only preserved wealth but, in many instances, has significantly appreciated in value. This long-term appreciation is particularly notable when compared to other assets that may depreciate due to technological advancements or changes in consumer preferences.
During periods of high inflation, gold has historically outperformed other investments. Its value tends to rise when the purchasing power of fiat currencies declines, thereby providing a hedge against inflation. This characteristic was notably evident during the 1970s, a decade marked by high inflation, during which gold prices surged.
Furthermore, gold’s performance during economic downturns has reinforced its reputation as a safe haven. In the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, for example, investors flocked to gold, driving up its price. This flight to safety highlighted gold’s role as a stabilizing force amidst economic turmoil.
Hedge Against Inflation and Economic Downturns
One of the most compelling reasons to invest in gold is its ability to act as a hedge against inflation and economic downturns. Inflation erodes the purchasing power of money, diminishing the real value of cash holdings and fixed-income investments such as bonds. Gold, however, maintains its purchasing power over the long term. As the cost of goods and services increases, so does the price of gold, thereby preserving the value of investors’ holdings.
In addition to its inflation-hedging properties, gold offers protection during economic downturns. During such times, investors often lose confidence in traditional assets like stocks and bonds. The uncertainty that pervades financial markets during recessions drives investors toward safer assets, and gold is frequently the beneficiary of this shift in sentiment. Its ability to maintain value when other assets are declining is a crucial reason why gold is considered a cornerstone of a well-diversified portfolio.

https://preview.redd.it/hxufinic7f0d1.png?width=988&format=png&auto=webp&s=f382c4847f58aafb43f213fc8b2992512ff6dfcb
Diversification in Your Investment Portfolio
Diversification is a fundamental principle of investing aimed at reducing risk. By spreading investments across different asset classes, investors can mitigate the impact of a poor performance by any single asset. Gold plays a vital role in this diversification strategy due to its low correlation with other financial assets.
Including gold in a portfolio can reduce volatility and improve returns over the long term. Studies have shown that portfolios containing a mix of stocks, bonds, and gold have outperformed those without gold, particularly during times of market stress. This diversification benefit is a key reason why financial advisors often recommend allocating a portion of an investment portfolio to gold.
Tangible Value and Stability of Gold
Gold’s tangible nature is another factor that contributes to its appeal as an investment. Unlike digital assets or paper money, gold is a physical substance that has been valued by human societies for millennia. This tangible value provides a sense of security and permanence that is unmatched by many other investments.
The stability of gold is also reflected in its supply. Gold cannot be produced at the same pace as paper money or digital currencies, which central banks can create at will. The limited supply of gold, combined with its enduring demand, underpins its value and makes it a stable investment over the long term.
Protection Against Currency Devaluation
Currency devaluation is a risk that affects all investors, regardless of the currency in which they hold their assets. When a currency loses value, it takes more units of that currency to purchase the same amount of goods or services. Gold offers protection against this risk because it is priced in currency terms. As the value of a currency declines, the price of gold in that currency tends to rise, preserving the purchasing power of investors’ holdings.
This protection is especially valuable in countries with volatile currencies or those prone to inflationary pressures. For investors in such environments, gold can serve as a safe haven, protecting against the adverse effects of currency devaluation.
Tax Advantages of Investing in Gold
Investing in gold can offer certain tax advantages, depending on the jurisdiction and the form of gold investment. For example, some countries do not levy capital gains tax on gold investments, or they may offer favorable tax treatment compared to other assets. These tax benefits can enhance the overall return on gold investments, making it an even more attractive option for investors.
It’s important for investors to consult with a tax advisor to understand the specific tax implications of investing in gold in their country. Taking advantage of these tax benefits can maximize the returns from gold investments and contribute to a more efficient investment strategy.

Different Ways to Invest in Gold
There are several ways to invest in gold, each with its own set of advantages and considerations. Physical gold, in the form of bars or coins, is a popular option for its tangible value and direct ownership. However, it requires secure storage and insurance, which can incur additional costs.
Gold ETFs and mutual funds offer a more convenient way to invest in gold without the need for physical storage. These financial instruments are traded on stock exchanges and are backed by physical gold or gold futures contracts. They provide liquidity and ease of trading but may come with management fees.
Gold mining stocks and mutual funds are another avenue for gold investment. These options involve investing in companies that mine gold, offering potential for dividends and capital appreciation. However, they also carry risks related to the performance of individual companies and the mining sector as a whole.
Risks and Considerations of Investing in Gold
While gold offers many benefits as an investment, there are also risks and considerations that investors should be aware of. The price of gold can be volatile in the short term, driven by factors such as currency fluctuations, interest rates, and geopolitical events. This volatility requires a long-term perspective and a tolerance for price fluctuations.
Additionally, investing in physical gold involves costs for storage and insurance, which can erode returns. Investors should carefully consider these costs and weigh them against the benefits of holding physical gold.
Finally, it’s important to recognize that gold does not produce income, such as dividends or interest, which some investors may seek from their investments. This lack of income should be considered in the context of an overall investment strategy and financial goals.

Conclusion: Is Investing in Gold Right for You?
Investing in gold offers a range of benefits, including diversification, protection against inflation and currency devaluation, and stability in times of economic uncertainty. However, like any investment, it also comes with risks and considerations that must be carefully evaluated.
For those seeking to preserve wealth and reduce risk in their investment portfolio, gold can be an excellent choice. Its historical performance, tangible value, and role as a hedge against economic downturns make it a compelling option for many investors.
Ultimately, whether investing in gold is right for you depends on your financial goals, risk tolerance, and investment strategy. By carefully considering these factors, you can make an informed decision about including gold in your investment portfolio.

2024.05.14 18:40 thepurlshq Cisplatin & Radiation Treatment (My Experience)

Update post on my progress and protocols for my treatment with side effects and how I managed it all.
Now that I'm done with treatment, I hope that this can help others who may be starting the same journey and have questions. I attribute my easy time to the premeds and my mental willpower. I focus on the positives and silver linings over the negatives. You can only control one thing -- your reactions. The rest requires you to practice acceptance.
Diagnosis: Stage 2 Endocervical Adenocarcinoma Gastric Type with LVSI
Treatment Plan: Surgery (cervix, uterus, and ovaries) followed by concurrent Chemo with Radiation with a PET Scan scheduled 2 months after treatment to determine if NED or more treatment is required.
I was scheduled for 6 chemo cycles, once a week, and 28 radiation beam therapies. Chemo happened on Monday and Radiation was Monday through Friday. I had to skip Cycle 3 on Chemo only because I was hospitalized with Norovirus and my counts were too low. I still did radiation those days.
Chemo Protocol in order of meds:
  1. Magnesium Sulfate + Potassium Chloride. Cisplatin strips this from your body, supplements.
  2. Emend (Fosaprepitant) - antiemetic. I had to get a port for this, it burned my arm vein and I had to use other arm for Chemo, no fun.
  3. Aloxi (Palonosetron) - antiemetic.
  4. Decadron (Dexamethasone) - steroid. It burns in your nether region, if it burns too much, ask them to push it slower.
  5. Lasix (Furosemide) - diuretic. Cisplatin is hard on kidneys, this is to help purge the chemo faster. Be close to a bathroom and ask nurse if you can just unplug your IV pole and go to bathroom freely vs. pushing call button -- its easier.
  6. Cisplatin (Platinol) 70mg (my dose). Didn't make me feel any different than the other infusions.
Plan for at least 5 hours for the above. I started at 7:30am and ended between 12 and 12:30pm.
Cisplatin Symptoms: This is going to vary person to person and you may get different premeds than me.
Pelvic Radiation Symptoms: This is going to be different based on what areas are treated. My bladder, vagina, and pelvic nodes were heavily treated. Be sure you understand the side effects before you start treatment - so you can be on top of everything. Below is my experience and I had a fairly easy time of it.
Nurses are your best friend. Having cancer and going through treatment sucks, but the nurses are there for you and my experience was all-inclusive resort service. Take advantage of the snacks (yes they have ice cream) when you're getting chemo. Don't be shy about asking them about your meds, they did a good job explaining this to me, but I still had questions now and again. It takes a special person to be an oncology nurse and you feel it. It never felt fake or like they were putting on a show/smile just for me. They truly cared. I never want to see them again either way :)
Edited to add: get a port. You will not regret it. I plan on keeping mine for a year after NED, which will require a monthly flush. It makes things so much easier, especially if you have to be hospitalized. I didn't need the numbing cream, it hurts less than the arm pokes for labs and infusions. I asked for mine before chemo and doctor didn't think it was necessary. First treatment proved it was - I had three IV's that day and I'm still suffering from the Emend infusion (not the chemo surprisingly) on my arm. Yes, its surgery but its easy. I had it in place before my 2nd chemo and it was lifechanging. I'd keep it for life it wasn't for the monthly flushes lol, my arm veins were crap to start and the more they are poked the worse they get.

2024.05.14 18:05 evasive-manuever Dr Office Won't Update Codes because "Fraud" - ???

I recently found a new doctor's office in my small town (NH). They are a family care office that is attached and affiliated with the local hospital. I have a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). As part of the onboarding process as a new patient, they required me to have a establishing care visit where I provided information about medical history medical concerns, etc. I have already paid the ~$150 office visit fee for this appointment as I understand it doesn't count as preventative care.
During the visit, the nurse practitioner said she wanted to do blood work for the annual physical that she had scheduled (less than two months away). The blood work she ordered seemed routine like a lipid pane, testosterone level check, STD testing, and vitamin D levels. I went to laboratory services within the hospital that same day to have blood drawn.
A little over a month after that initial establishing care visit, I received a bill in the mail for the amount of >$1700 with a contracted insurance discount of ~$500. Resulting in a balance of over $1200. I called my insurance company to see why the claim was denied and $0 was paid as I was told this was bloodwork that would be reviewed at my upcoming physical. My insurance company told me that the claim was submitted with the primary billing code of 'illness' and that if any routine blood work was submitted with the routine charge code, that it would be 100% covered with my insurance as it's considered 'preventative care'.
I have spent almost two months going back and forth with the hospital billing, medical records, and family care office. Getting the runaround about codes being submitted and other possible delays between the family office and medical records, billing not having any updates for me, etc.
As of yesterday I finally heard back from the family care practice manager. She told me that all of the codes were submitted properly and that going back and changing the codes to then submit a Correct Claim to my insurance company would be considered fraud. She told me that she had spoken to the billing department and they had said they were unwilling to write off any of the charges as they were not going to be covered by insurance even if they had been charged differently. I told her I spoke with my insurance and that information was not correct. I told her that the only test I had requested that day was the STD testing and the other tests were the primary care nurse practioner's 'standard' testing for annual physicals. The Practice Manager said she would talk with billing again and get back to me.
This afternoon, I received a "Past Due" notice for the bill and it says that if I do not pay within 7 days, it will be sent for a credit review. I work as a contractor for a company that services the federal government and hold an active security clearance. I cannot be seen to be a financial risk with something like collections on my credit history. I have the funds available to pay the ~$1200 bill in my HSA, but I can't help but feel this is wrong and incorrectly billed.
What (if any) recourse do I have for this? Should I just eat the $1200 and not have any blood work performed unless it's at an annual physical in the future (even in my primary care NP wants it done before the physical so we can review the results then)? Am I misunderstanding the HDHP 'preventative care' coverage?
Lastly, if I'm not misunderstanding all of this, is there some government agency to report this to? I have been calling, leaving voicemails, and getting the runaround between different departments for months with 0 progress.
