Unblock sinks and toilets

How normal is it for maintenance workers (such as plumbers) to leave a mess?

2024.05.14 06:06 816_406 How normal is it for maintenance workers (such as plumbers) to leave a mess?

Several times when maintenance workers have come over, they've left a bit of a mess. Dirty bootprints on the carpet, water on the floor, etc. The main reason I'm posting here, though, is because of a plumber that fixed my toilet earlier today.
I came home to a scene that made me wonder if they were only half finished and planning on coming back. There was a squashed roll of paper towels on my bed, the toilet and wall had some red paint-like substance smeared on them, and there was a broken toilet part sitting on my sink. Moreover, my stuff had been moved around and not put back. Also, my bath mat was dirty, there was a soggy toilet paper roll on the floor, and there were wet, broken toilet parts in my trash can *outside* of the bag, which is pretty hard to miss, making my trash can wet and gross-smelling.
I live in an apartment, so I'm wondering if workers who go to those don't care about cleaning up since management are the ones who hired them. Do homeowners have the same problems too? Or did I just get a particularly bad plumber that I could complain to management about?

2024.05.14 04:50 cwtguy Moldy air coming from neighbors house - how can we improve the air quality and smell outside?

I've already spoken with my neighbor. She doesn't notice or pretends not to. She's a renter and is currently staying in a hotel while her place is being remodeled on the inside.
Long story short she let a toilet leak into the floor for years and it finally rotted the wood and fel through. When the landlord came in to fix the problem he has also been at work replacing a sink, hole in roof, leaking shower into floor below, rotted drywall and that's what I he told me. He also mentioned she's a hoarder and it was disgusting to be in there.
The contractor has a window open with a fan constantly blowing air out of the house. It's the same rancid smell we as neighbors always smell when she has her AC unit exhaust attached to the window to vent outside.
Due to the nature of the reno situation going on I feel now is the time to help her out or take action on our front with outdoor fans, Tiki torches and whatever else will combat the smell. Maybe it's dangerous but it's definitely uncomfortable. Guests and delivery people comment on it each summer. I want our outdoor area to be inviting and pleasant.
Any suggestions?

2024.05.14 04:06 Party-Dependent-577 Adding a bathroom to a finished basement

To those that added a bathroom in the basement that didn’t have one, how long did it take you to have a 3 piece bath (shower, sink and toilet) roughed in? Basically digging and breaking the concrete floor, adding drains and vents and back fill/patch the concrete. I had a licensed plumber start this project as well as add an emergency sump pit back in March 14. It is now May 13 and it’s still not complete… I’ve done research before starting and the bathroom rough in is usually done in about 3-4 full days. What are your thoughts? Is it normal to take this long?
Thanks

2024.05.14 04:01 Hour-Reward-2355 FreedomMarketPlace Buildings - Shell Home

FreedomMarketPlace Buildings - Shell Home
**Looking for general guidance/advice/criticism.
Is vendor trust worthy?
Is plan solid?
We have the land but it's not totally developed. It's a sloping hill but is cleared of trees and has concrete driveway access. Rural unincorporated community.
It's in a much better school district vs our current paid-off house. After we complete the new house and move, we can rent/sell the old house. I'm trying to find a way to self-finance a house without needing to sell anything or finance through a bank. A shell house is a solution that I arrived at.
I'm a one man crew so I can't self build an entire house but I can definitely finish out the inside of a dry structure.
Found this vendor on Facebook Marketplace.
Freedom Market Place Custom Built Structures, Portable Buildings, Modular Buildings, or Built on Site, including custom Shell Homes, Lofted Cabins, and more.
I sent price request with floor plan. Possibly $30-40K delivered and vendor estimates $30-40K in material to finish the inside myself. 3-4 month lead time.
No interior or insulation included. Included is LVP wood panel siding, house wrap, 2x6 exterior walls, 2x6 flat framed ceiling, 6x 3x5 windows, 2 steel exterior doors, 1 french door. 10" overhangs and 14/2 metal roof.
I will contract out for the septic installation but can do the foundation work myself. I have access to a nearby transformer pole on the property less than 100ft away and access to city water at the street.
I estimate a total budget of $150K and a further 100K contingency in the bank in case sh*t hits the fan. Hopefully hit close to the 150K mark then this will be a great deal on a house.
Mineral Wool R25 in floors/walls and R38 in ceiling. Vented attic. Zone 4 climate. All electric heating/cooling mini split heat pumps. Backup wood burning stove in living room.
I allowed for a future 20x20 addition to the house via a pre-installed exterior door so future expansion is a bit easier.
edit: bathroom is pocket door. Wife wants wet bathroom split from toilet/sink. Entry is at the kitchen. Laundry room has entry door thru back.

2024.05.14 02:38 Just_Tip7606 AITAH for sending a voice recording to my roommates to convince them to kick a guy out of our dorm

Me and a bunch of people are a part of an organisation, we organise events for students in my university, a bunch of us have decided to live together in a dorm of about 10 next year.
The problem came up when we slowly started realising that one of the guys that is going to live with us next year smells pretty pretty badly, he’s also one of those people who have 0 filter and who says things quite rudely sometimes, but he’s a very motivated member of the organisation, there’s just no synergy between him and the rest of us, everyone else agrees with that statement. So the rest of us have started discussing the possibility of telling him that living with us next year isn’t a good idea or at least talking to him about his hygiene problems. My future roommates have been hesitating for weeks to open the conversation with him, we’ve created a group chat without him to discuss how we’re going to deal with that problem. But they’ve been too scared of hurting his feelings , I am frankly one of the only initiators of this conversation and every time I tell them “hey guys, we should talk to him sooner rather than later” they just respond dismissively and then ignore the issue, i was honestly so fed up with them just ignoring this issue.I’ve been going after my future roommates for weeks trying to find a way and a time to talk to this guy about the Hygiene issue but they just wouldn’t do anything. I especially insisted on talking to him sooner so he can find another dorm because finding dorms near our university is quite hard and i didn’t want him to end up without a dorm.
That was until I saw my friend by pure coincidence hanging out with one of his current roommates, she said that we were insane for accepting to live with him because it’s been hell for her for the past 3 years, she explained some horrific things about his hygiene, it was way worse than I thought. For example he’d rub his hands in between his toes then cooks without washing his hands, he would clean the dining table with the same towel he washes the floor and toilet with, he would wash the dishes with only water, he would clog the sinks with his hair, he wouldn’t flush the toilet and would dirty it with poop, he would cook something then leave it out on the counter for weeks. They’ve been living together for 3 years and they told him multiple times throughout the years clearly that he’s not a clean person and that it’s a hell living with him but his behaviour hasn’t changed at all, in fact, she said it’s gotten worse.
What’s even funnier is the fact that he keeps telling us how his roommates do nothing around the dorm and how they suck and how he’s the only one that cleans.
So me being absolutely fed up with me future roommate’s carelessness and being horrified from what i heard, i asked his current roommate if i can record everything she said as proof to my future roommates and to motivate them to do something, she said sure, i recorded her and i sent the voice message to my future roommates to prove to them how crappy things could get for us if we do nothing about this.
To my surprise, my future roommates’ frustration and disappointment was directed towards me, they said that what i did (recording his current roommate’s experience with him and sending it to them) is very mean spirited and ruthless and that i should delete the voice recording from the group chat immediately before anyone else hears it.
So AITAH for sending that voice message to the groupchat to push my future roommates to do something about this ? Was what I did mean spirited and too far ?

2024.05.14 01:40 MouseInTheRatRace Water flushing on its own through toilet pipes at night in single-family home

What could cause water to run through a toilet's pipes, aside from someone flushing it?
Most evenings around 9pm it sounds like someone is flushing our master bathroom toilet. But no one is in that or any other bathroom, which is easy to verify since we're a small family in a single-family house. It's not a full flush since the sound only lasts a second or two, and it ends with a soft clunking sound like we hear when we turn the water off at the nearby sink. This will happen 2-3 times with 10-15 minute intervals. It sometimes happens it in the morning too, but not regularly. We never hear it during the day.
This started a few weeks ago. Could it be connected to a new water meter that our company installed about that time? If it matters, this is in New Jersey, and Veolia is the water company.

2024.05.14 00:50 drakk0n Ongoing saga of a house with ever recurring clogs

We purchased a home in 2022 and at that time an inspection showed no issues. There are 2 full bathrooms upstairs, 1 half bath downstairs. There was some minor 0 degree grade in some areas but other than some buildup in the line from grease it looked to be running fine from the home to the sewer.
Come 2-3 months of living in this house our nightmare began. Its only my wife and I living here. The upstairs toilets stopped flushing and would get backed up. After a while they would drain down, but we would get a plumber out and they would snake it and all fine for another week or so until bam another backup. Finally brought in a camera and saw a clog of enormous length (20 ft) and ended up hydrojetting it out.
This process has continued on throughout the past year. 4 companies, 2 gave up completely, 1 started to get crazy with their charges, the latest is stumped and said let us replace the line. That didn't work. This weekend sewage sept up from a floor drain from an ice maker. The cause? a clog in the same damn line.
With changes made under the house and in various ways to see what can be done:
Unfortunately I don't have much video/pictures of much help as there have been so many changes that anything I do have is out of date. Here are some images showing the crawlspace and the best diagram I've been able to get so far: https://imgur.com/a/K5BNH3s

2024.05.13 22:36 SharpButterfly3387 Sewage smell in bathroom

We have lived in our house for 1.5 years. Exactly 48 hours ago I walked into one of our bathrooms and was slapped in the face by what smelled like sewage. I use this bathroom every day, the sink, shower, and toilet (no drain would ever run dry). I cleaned the bathroom head to toe and let the fan run immediately. Smell persisted and even got worse. We replaced the toilet entirely the next day, it was old, and got a brand new wax seal. Smell faded. Didn’t use bathroom at all for 24 hours and closed sink and shower valves and filled with an inch of water, left fan running. This morning, barely noticeable smell, a ton better. Thought it was the toilet and we were in the clear. I flushed that new toilet twice and took a shower in that bathroom and it smells just as bad as it did at its worst. What the hell? It’s never smelled like this in the prior 1.5 years.
Adding: after seeing those notes about the vent being clogged I filled a few different sinks up and then opened and there is no gurgling noises. Its raining out so don’t want to get on my roof at the moment.
Adding again: appreciate these ideas so much, thank you. Right now course of action is to get on the roof and run some water down the vent pipe. There is one coming up right above that bathroom. Although there’s no gurgling coming from drains I feel like it could be partially blocked still? It’s the only reasonable thing i can think of other than something being dead in the crawlspace or in the attic above. Storming now so waiting for the next opportunity in a day or so.

(Apologies for incompetent first post, but with intended attachments I hope now... ) This wall-mounted toilet in our powder room can be seen from wayyyy too many places and angles and it drive me bonkers.
If I can't change everything (i.e. walls which are wainscott tiled AND plumbing for built-in toilet and wall mounted faucet pedestal sink AND door), any ideas for what 1-2 things I could change? Mudroom has no built-ins as of now. My only current idea is to shown in the second image. Thoughts on this or other ideas appreciated!

Vent Pipe? in Roughed in Garage Half-Bath
I have a detached garage, with a loft, that has a roughed in (two piece) bathroom (to my septic system) into the slab. I know what 3 of the 4 'pipes' are for (they were labeled) but I am not sure on the 4th. 1 is the toilet, 1 for a sink (2"), and 1 for the Vent stack (4") that is now through the roof. These were all in the usual places coming up from the slab and were marked. The last pipe (2") comes up through the bottom plate (into the wall) and was not marked. I am assuming this was/is for running up to the loft to provide venting if there was ever any additional plumbing run up there? Or would this be a vent pipe for this two-piece bathroom on the garage floor? Any help is much appreciated since I plan to run water and add the toilet and sink soon.
First Picture: Toilet and 4th pipe in wall (pipe in question)
Second Picture: Sink (ignore the spare 4" pipe sitting there)
Third Picture: Vent stack (outside of bathroom)

2024.05.13 20:31 llp68 Granddaughter coming to live with grandma

ADHD college kid living with grandparents.
She will be a sophomore in college. This year she couldn’t be guaranteed a single room in the dorm so she is going to live with us. Parents are both high school teachers but have not done a lot of preparation for ADHD because she never had a problem in high school. Issues freshman year: some courses that require memorizing, not good. Encouraged her to seek help at campus ADHD office but she didn’t “have time “.
She also struggled with daily cleaning/personal hygiene. Struggled with making friends.
As a grandparent I would like to put some rules in place so she doesn’t pit my house out. Is this unreasonable? Is there a better way to say this?
Rules for living here.
Bathroom: Daily shower Wash hair 3 times/week Clean-Cut nails 1/week Brush teeth 2x/day morning and before sleep. Clean bathroom after using, wipe hair out of drain, toilet , sink with sanitary wipes and place in trash can.
Keep bedroom picked up, vacuum 1/week
Kitchen:put away food , rinse off dishes and put in dishwasher.
Laundry: wash sheets, towels - once/week Wash darks separately from light colors. Clothes must be hung in closet after washing.
Car. Keep it clean, oil changed when needed, air in tires. Registration and tags current.
I told parents about the ADHD office at the school and they said she probably wouldn’t go.
I feel like she is ruining her own success by not getting help.

2024.05.13 19:55 ineedafewmorerocks First curb-less shower install

First curb-less shower install
This project was a big learning experience for a beginner tile setter like myself, had to sister-in new floor joists and re-build the subfloor as the old joists and subfloor were inadequate for a tile install. The old joists were also way out of level as the house was built in the 1920's and has settled quite a lot.
I installed new PEX plumbing, drain lines and the new sink and toilet as well.
I built the shower pan subfloor flush with the new joists to make the finished floor of the shower pan flush with the rest of the bathroom floor.
I know its not the prettiest job, but the clients let me use this remodel as a sort of "practice round" for tiling, which I greatly appreciate. Any and all criticism is welcome.

IE chores around the house. First I made mention of what we would do. I love to cook so naturally she would clean. NOPE.
I would do the heavy cleaning mop floors clean windows. (I very particular so) clean oven. In bathroom I'll clean shower, toilet and floor. She would clean sink, mirrors, and dust. NOPE.
She would dust PERIOD NOPE reason? She hates to dust
We both work/worked I am now retired so I guess this is why it is bugging me more.
I tell her it is either being passive aggressive or depression. She says she forgets.......

2024.05.13 19:03 stalequinoa Acidic, semi-sweet acetone/Dettol-like smell in secondary bathroom that comes and goes; seems to occur after a shower in the master bathroom. What could be the cause?

Over the last month, we are noticing an acidic, semi-sweet acetone/Dettol-like smell in our secondary bathroom. It ranges from very strong to very mild, and seems to occur commonly after we use the shower in the other (master) bathroom. It may also occur after flushing the toilet in the master, but this I'm less sure on.
The bathtub in the washroom with the smell is almost never used, although the sink and toilet are. The odour does not resemble a sewage smell. This is on the third floor of a townhouse built in 2021, that has air conditioning. The issue started before we began turning on the AC this unusually warm spring.
Perhaps relevant: just prior to this odour issue, we had more clogs in our toilets than usual, some of which couldn't be unclogged with simple plunging. They were cleared by pouring a large bucket of hot water with detergent. We haven't had a clogs since, but we think the flushing strength is slightly weaker than before. Could be psychological though.
From my initial reading (I am very much a layman), I've seen these suggestions:
I'm more concerned than I'd normally be because this washroom is unfortunately right next to our nursery room. Would greatly appreciate any ideas!

2024.05.13 17:56 justin774 Toilet water hammer

I just bought my first home last month and the toilets in the house cause a loud banging in the pipes. The home was built in 2012 and all toilet components are original to the home. No other water use in the house causes the banging sound, just flushing the toilets.
The shutoff valves are quarter turn. If I turn the valve 1/2way I get no water hammer, but the toilet fills very slow.
Would replacing the full valves and shutoff valves solve my problem?
I shut off the main water supply, drained all the water in the system by turning on all sinks and flushing the toilets. I turned the main supply back on and this fixed the problem for about 2 days. Now the sound is back.
Any advice is appreciated!
