Caravella restaurant

My Italy traveler notes!

2023.10.06 21:42 justatravelerhere My Italy traveler notes!

I am kind of brain dumping this so I dont forget, so excuse the spelling/grammar while I sort out my thoughts!
For the restaurants bullets let me just say its a hit and a miss
My trip was Naples, Rome, Cineque Terre and finishing up in Venice
In the big city’s of Italy everyone seems like they want to help you on the street but they expect some kind of compensation for said help.
If you are going to the basicilica you need to cover your shoulders. Bring something to cover your shoulders and knees There are people outside tours selling shawls to cover yourself. Just bring a shirt or something and save your money
Bring some kind of fan during the summer. It can get hot and a lot of the places we visited had no AC
Fanny pack. Dorky but totally worth it to wear across your shoulder. It grew on me and now I love it
We rode the public transportation in Barcelona, Naples and had no issue getting around or picket pockets.
Book everything ahead of time (museums, trains, landmarks, and…..)
Cut the line doesn’t always mean right in. Yes you will be a head of the those that have regular tickets/or waiting to get ticket but because of the amount of groups things will be slow and you will be waiting in some kind of line
Bone chapel was interesting
Catacombs were fun
Naples was probably the low point of our trip. Crossing the street is a test of your commitment to get across the street. People will stop if you start walking in the cross walk but you have to take the initiative 99% of the time
Capri is awesome. If you are lucky the blue cave is open.
Don’t let the bracelet guys shake your hand because that is how they suck you in
If you are gonna hike the blue path, do it early because the crowded and the path make it hard to get by. They have check points where they check your ticket so have a ticket. The path can get very narrow and you are fighting people to get down.
Blue path: check what part of trails are open.
Online train tickets don’t need to be validated. Pro tip if you have a train that lets you pick seats try to get the closes to the doors. Insanity trying to get on spez central Train. We watched a group of people in a cart take 20 minutes after the train was moving and people were still trying to figure seats out
Speaking of the city some of the older trains don’t tell you the current stop and the signs outside the trains can be “one sign “ and that’s it. I. used google maps a bunch (downloaded offline maps before leaving helped a ton during our trip). Apple Maps since less reliable for us when it came to public transportation. (And at the time iOS 17 wasn’t out yet which support offline maps).
I had T-Mobile, it was slow but got us where we needed to go/be/connected.
Venice:
Cafe florian in Marco square was expensive. Food was fine, you are paying for the location. They will charge you 6 euro per person just for music
Venice to the airport. Alliguna has cheap tickets but it’s longer ride with multiple stops. For 2 people it costs 30 euros. Private is gonna be faster but $$$.
Venice busy and perfect if you like to shop. Me not really but enjoyed just relaxing
La Caravella in Venice was delicious
Venice street food was actually pretty good
Venice is super easy to walk around, not sure if the daily waterbus tickets are worth it. Maybe if you are older
Mimi cocos in Rome was awesome. Great service, food, atmosphere, cocktails
Cocktails in Italy are a hit and a miss restaurant wise
Tonorolio and Canetna e concuchen in Rome were fine the reviews raved about them but it was just fine. You won’t go wrong but don’t need to go out of your way for them
Waiting for dinner. Don’t be scared by long lines. They don’t take too long and if you don’t care just grab whatever table. People want the outdoor tables but I would get in quicker going indoors.
In Europe you ask for the check
Trains: Sometimes they have very close connections (6-10 minutes). So be mindful that some trains are delayed because of how slow people are to unload/load up on a train. Important to know at largepopular stations. We almost missed a train because of us coming in literally at departure. We lucked out and were able to jump on right when does were closing. Sometimes you can luck out and see what platform your connection is But double check this. We almost got burned by this
Very little to no escalators/elevators in train stations so you will be carrying around your luggage
Speaking of packing, if you are doing trains be mindful that some trains only have the over head storage (or between two sets of seats). Every person I saw struggling had large hard case suit cases.
Laundry: Some washers come with laundry detergent already. (Saw this in Rome and Barcelona Spain). I did laundry a few times and it was pretty painless even in the middle of Rome
Guided tours: They move fast. We did a few and most move fast when it comes to museums so if you are the type to read all descriptions you are gonna be disappointed. Mention something about the crowds
When taking the train, it’s not uncommon for the platform number to not show up until its 10 minutes to boarding so dont freak out.
Subways: Push the buttons to open the doors (not automatic)
Water at restaurant is generally not free
They will ask you if you want still (tap) or sparkling
Bread generally isn’t free either.
Dont be surprised if you see a service charge on your food check
Most touch screens systems have a button to change the language to English
Me personally avoided most places that had someone standing outside trying to convince you to come eat in their restaurant
European towel warmers are those railings you see in the bathroom
Power plugs lack of usb
I never found a taxi that took credit cards (even if they are supposed to)
More smaller places seemed to want only cash

Over I had a blast in italy

2022.09.17 16:13 ShivsC Restaurant Recommendations- Last Minute, as usual.

Hello… would love any advice on restaurants in Venice- we are staying near San Marco and have booked La Caravella for one night. There’s 6 of us and I forgot to book somewhere for the second night. 😱😱 Any help at all would be so appreciated! Thanks so much.
