2024.05.18 15:15 como365 Republican infighting marked 2024 legislative session

JEFFERSON CITY — The 2024 legislative session that ended Friday seemed more a referendum on Republican Party loyalty than a collective venture toward policy.
Constant infighting among Republicans over priorities and which ones were truly conservative led to days-long filibusters, name calling and the death of many conservative bills, including a top party priority: making it more difficult to amend the Missouri Constitution.
The divisions were so ingrained that the Senate Democrats, holding 10 seats in a 34-person body, delivered the deciding votes on some of the session's most important bills.
The hard-right Freedom Caucus has said their issue with mainstream Republican leaders in the legislature is a lack of dedication to “big red” policies like reducing personal property tax and preventing foreign countries from owning Missouri land.
Looking back at previous sessions, that argument doesn’t quite stack up. In the last several years Republicans have passed one of the nation's most strict abortion bans, limitations on transgender health care and enacted several income tax cuts.
The Freedom Caucus went to great lengths to disrupt Senate procedure and strong-arm leadership in an effort to pass their highest priority, changes to the initiative petition process. The impact was that they were tossed off Senate committees by the Republican leadership and later in the session failed to convince their Republican colleagues to embrace their priorities.
Less than two weeks before the constitutional deadline for the budget and with an important federal health care reimbursement that creates over $4 billion in revenue, Freedom Caucus members filibustered for 41 hours with the demand that leadership first bring up a resolution changing the approval threshold for state constitutional amendments.
Going into the last week of session, initiative petition reform still had not passed.
This week, the Freedom Caucus supported a motion among Republicans to end the Democratic filibuster on the issue through an extraordinary motion — the previous question — that hasn’t been used in the Senate since 2020. But only 16 Republicans would support that plan, which needed 18 votes, so it was never brought before the floor.
With that failure on Wednesday, the resolution was sent back to the House, which refused to budge on Thursday and sent it back to the Senate. On Friday the Senate adjourned without any further action and the effort died.
The failure to pass the resolution making initiative petition changes showed the inability of even a supermajority to act when splintered on such chaotic, disruptive lines.
Senate President Pro Tem. Caleb Rowden, R-Columbia, said that this session showed that more can get done through compromise than confrontation.
"I'm walking out of here as a guy that has basically accomplished everything I wanted to accomplish and I did it in a way that was respectful and collegial," Rowden said in a press conference after adjournment.
Senate Minority Leader John Rizzo, R-Independence, backed up that point saying, "I don't think Democrats won or Republicans lost (the session), I think decorum won."
Fiscal Year 2025 budget
A set of constitutionally mandated bills that fund the state's operations passed just three hours before the May 10 deadline. The final budget is $51.7 billion, $1 billion less than what the governor proposed, and about $2 billion less than last year's budget.
Three things stuck out in this year's budget: Infrastructure continued to be a major focus, spending was reduced to come in line with revenue projects and numerous members on both sides of the aisle were frustrated by the lack of transparency in the process.
Over the last two years, about $3.5 billion has been put into widening I-70 to six lanes statewide and I-44 in the southwestern part of the state. Both projects are about equally funded through debt and general revenue. The budget that was approved is expected to reduce the state surplus to about $1.5 billion.
Up-to-date numbers from the Office of Administration show a more rosy revenue picture than anticipated. So far Fiscal Year 2024 revenue receipts are up 2.7% year over year. That's far higher than the projected .2% growth in revenue used to craft the budget. If that revenue continues at the same pace and with a current general fund balance of over $4 billion there is a chance the state's surplus will hardly be tapped over the next year.
The declining budget also represents a return to normal state budgeting. Since the pandemic, states have received an unprecedented influx of federal COVID relief and infrastructure cash. That has led to record high appropriations that oftentimes don't get spent. In the FY 2023 budget, $10 billion of the $48 billion appropriated was never used. In 2018, only $2 billion of the $28 billion budget was left unspent.
No public comment was taken during the budget process and meetings between the House and Senate where the final budget package was finalized only existed behind closed doors. Senators only had a few minutes to review the bills before voting on them and House members had little time to debate as they passed the budget just hours before the constitutional deadline.
This backdoor process drew criticism from Democrats, Freedom Caucus members and the governor as many felt out of the loop.
Elections and initiative changes Fighting over changes that would make it harder to amend the Missouri Constitution again put the brakes on normal operating procedures on the Senate floor this session.
The Freedom Caucus has more than once sent the Senate into disarray over a piece of legislation that again failed to cross the finish line after years of attempts.
The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Mary Elizabeth Coleman, R-Arnold, would have asked voters whether the current threshold to amend the state constitution — a simple majority, or 50% plus one — should be raised to also require a majority vote in at least five of the state’s eight congressional districts.
This year’s proposal included two provisions that led the chamber to several lengthy filibusters totaling more than 100 hours. In addition to the threshold requirement, the provisions would ask voters to bar noncitizens from voting on constitutional amendments and to ban constitutional amendments sponsored by foreign governments.
These provisions are already state law and Democrats made a point of filibustering against those provisions.
Republicans this session also pushed a resolution that would ban ranked-choice voting in Missouri. SJR 78 was passed by the House on Friday. The question will now go to voters to decide.
Ranked-choice voting is a practice where voters rank their preferred candidates on a single ballot until a winner is declared after receiving a majority of the vote. The idea is to give voters more options once their top-ranked choice is eliminated by distributing their vote to their next preferred candidates. Opponents said the practice does the exact opposite by splitting the vote.
While it is not in state law, St. Louis practices a version of ranked-choice voting that will be protected if the ban passes.
Education bill An omnibus education bill, SB 727, raising the minimum teacher salary, allowing charter schools in Boone County and providing private school scholarships to low-income students, has already been signed into law by Gov. Mike Parson. The provisions of the bill, approved by the minimum vote required in the House, are estimated to cost the state $468 million.
The new state minimum salary for teachers is set at $40,000 a year beginning with the next school year and includes additional incentives for teachers with longer careers and those with master’s degrees.
The voucher-like scholarship program for private school students offers up to $6,375 per child for expenses such as tuition, textbooks and transportation. The program is funded by private donors who can claim tax credits.
The size of the bill ballooned from 12 pages to more than 150 because of amendments in the Senate. House leaders blocked amendments so that the bill would not have to be returned for another vote in the Senate out of concern it would die because of filibusters on other topics.
The law requires a public vote to approve any switch to four-day school weeks while providing incentives to schools that stick with five-day weeks.
New crime provisions A major public safety bill that passed during the final House session on Friday made changes to how children are viewed in the court system, increased punishment for various crimes and limited the authority of citizen police review boards, among other items.
The bill tracks legislation passed last year, except for two technical provisions that prompted a veto by Parson. The law increases the age under which children could be considered adults in felony offenses from 12 to 14.
On July 4, 2011, Blair Shanahan Lane was killed by reckless celebratory gunfire. A portion of the bill dubbed "Blair's Law" creates penalties for such activity. After the bill passed on a bipartisan basis Friday, House members rose for a round of applause directed at Blair Lane's mother, who was in attendance.
The bill also creates "Valentine's Law" raising punishments for fleeing a law enforcement stop. It is named for St. Louis County Detective Antonio Valentine, who died in a crash pursuing a person fleeing police.
And there is a provision known as "Max's Law" that increases punishment for injuring or killing law enforcement K-9 dogs.
Sludge regulations House Bill 2134, which would create new regulations for wastewater sludge under the Missouri Clean Water Act, gained bipartisan approval and was signed by Parson.
The bill gained traction as concerns about waste lagoons and land application practices by Arkansas-based Denali Water Solutions have been brought to light. The new law prevents companies like Denali from applying waste as fertilizer without a regulatory process and testing.
Denali was previously forced to cease operations in Missouri after 6,000 gallons of slaughterhouse waste spilled into a field, causing residents to complain about the smell and runoff concerns.
Regulatory Sandbox Act The House Friday gave final approval to SB 894 creating an avenue for new companies offering innovative products to be excused from meeting some state regulations for the first 24 months that they begin offering innovative products to consumers.
Companies would be required to apply and meet certain criteria to participate in the program.
The bill also creates an Office of Entrepreneurship within the Department of Economic Development that will promote policies and initiatives to support the growth of entrepreneurship of Missouri-based businesses with less than ten employees.
Eviction moratorium A bill passed on Friday barred any municipality from enacting an eviction moratorium. The bill, SB 865, comes in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic when cities across the country prevented landlords from evicting tenets. Realtors and apartment associations spoke in favor of the bill as they feel moratoriums violate the rights of property owners.
National Guard deployment Parson signed a bill on May 8 approving additional funding for a Missouri National Guard deployment to the southern border. The governor traveled to Eagle Pass, Texas, to sign House Bill 2016 into law and visit with members who have been deployed since March.
“The battle that we’re fighting down here at the border is keeping it from happening in our own borders, in our own state in Missouri,” Parson said before signing the bill.
Members of the National Guard are assisting with Operation Lone Star after being invited by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. Operation Lone Star is a state-level border security effort at the Texas-Mexico border that began in 2021.
The $2.2 million in funding supports the operations of approximately 200 National Guard members and 22 Missouri State Highway Patrol officers for 90 days. Since the start of their mission, only around 50 guardsmen and 22 members of the highway patrol have served in Texas.
Sports wagering moves ahead After years of failed attempts to get legalization through the Missouri General Assembly, sports gambling appears to have found a more promising path.
Early in May, the Winning for Missouri Education committee along with a coaltion of Missouri professional sports teams submitted over 340,000 signatures for a ballot initiative to the Secretary of State's office desk.
If the Secretary of State verifies that enough signatures are genuine, the question would be put to voters in November. Thirty-eight other states have legalized some form of sports wagering.
The petition proposes a 10% tax on wagers to be collected by the Department of Revenue, deposited into the state treasury and credit to the "Gaming Proceeds for Education Fund," raising a projected $35 million.
Approximately $5 million in funds from the sports wagering tax would go into a fund to help compulsive gamblers and the rest would go to public school and higher education programs.
Child tax credits Bipartisan support and a State of the State address plug by Parson helped two bills, SB 742 and HB 1488, which would add provisions allowing for tax credits related to child care services to reach the Senate floor for consideration.
However, opposition from Freedom Caucus members of the Senate stalled action both in an effort to advance bills they felt deserved more priority and out of a general dislike of tax credits. The Senate version is sponsored by Sen. Lauren Arthur, D-Kansas City, while the House bill is sponsored by Rep. Brenda Shields, R-St. Joseph.
Protecting IVF House and Senate bills to protect in vitro fertilization clinics got a flurry of attention but did not advance following an Alabama state court ruling that relied on a state abortion ban to restrict in vitro fertilization clinics.
The Missouri Court of Appeals in St. Louis ruled in 2016 that IVF-created embryos were a matter of “marital property of special order.” This has provided legal protection for doctors and patients in the IVF field.
However, that court ruling cited abortion protection offered by Roe Vs. Wade, which was overturned in 2022. With Missouri having a similar abortion ban to the one in Alabama, leading advocates and lawmakers alike are concerned about what could lie ahead.
Sen. Tracy McCreery, D-Olivette, filed SB 1486 which would specify that Missouri's abortion ban does not have a definition that includes in vitro fertilization embryos that have not been implanted in a body. Rep. Bill Allen, R-Kansas City, filed House Bill 2845 which states that the IVF process is protected under law and no one can be prosecuted for undergoing or administrating IVF.
Here is what happened to other legislative topics that garnered attention during the session but did not pass:
Protections for pesticide maker: HB 2763, sponsored by Rep. Dane Diehl, R-Butler, would have protected pesticide manufacturers from claims that they failed to warn consumers of possible cancer risks in their products as long as the federal Environmental Protection Agency has approved those products.
Much of the debate before the House approved the bill focused on Bayer, the company with U.S. headquarters in St. Louis that purchased Monsanto, the original manufacturer of RoundUp pesticide. According to The Associated Press, the company is seeking to stem a tide of lawsuits claiming that Bayer’s products cause cancer.
Diehl, a farmer, said he drafted the legislation out of fear that Bayer would be forced to pull RoundUp off of the market, harming farmers ability to grow crops. The bill never made it to the Senate floor for consideration.
Presidential primaries: New voting laws passed in 2022 eliminated the presidential primary in Missouri. Following low voter turnout in this year’s Republican presidential caucus, SB 1120 and HB 2618, which would reinstate presidential primaries, passed out of their respective committees. The House bill passed with amendments that would create new residency restrictions for candidates vying for U.S. Congress. Ultimately, neither bill got floor consideration.
The Taylor Swift Act: Bills in both the House and Senate sought to address the impact of problematic images created by artificial intelligence but did not make it into law. While ten states provide some form of retribution for this type of crime, only Minnesota and New York statutes allow for both civil and criminal relief.
The Taylor Swift Act, House Bill 2573, offered by Rep. Adam Schwadron, R-St. Charles, targeted fake pornographic images. The bill was approved by the Special Committee on Innovation and Technology but never received a floor vote. The name of the bill referred to explicit AI-created images of the singer that went viral in January.
A similar bill, Senate Bill 1424, sponsored by Sen. Travis Fitzwater, R-Holts Summit, did not get a hearing.
Media Literacy: Companion bills, House Bill 1513 and Senate Bill 1311, aimed to teach students about media and digital literacy. Neither bill advanced.
Danny's Law: Legislation that sought to protect 911 callers from prosecution when calling to report a hazing incident stalled in the House. The bill was named after former University of Missouri student Danny Santulli, who suffered irreparable brain damage after drinking too much when pledging a fraternity at MU in the fall of 2021.
Danny’s Law was meant to offer exoneration to those involved in hazing incidents if they’re the first to call for emergency help.
“As the mother of three college-age men, I understand this is a major issue,” said Rep. Jo Doll, D-St. Louis, who spoke during a March 7 committee hearing. “It’s really important to give kids the ability to call 911 without being afraid of the consequences to them.”
Protecting major water users: House Bill 2669, which sought to limit information being released to the public about major water users, was approved by a House committee but failed to get a floor vote. The bill was meant to protect the information of Missouri’s family farmers and would keep information about individually identifiable water users from being disclosed to the public.
Highway Commission changes: A bill, House Bill 2568, that would have changed the makeup of the Missouri Highways & Transportation Commission was voted down in a committee in Apri. Two other bills that would have either changed the makeup of the commission or done away with it altogether failed to move forward after being the subject of public hearings in early February.
Nursing restrictions: Missouri is one of only a few states not to allow nurse practitioners to practice independently without the authority of a physician. A House committee passed an amended version of one bill, HB 1773, sponsored by Rep. Chad Perkins, R-Bowling Green, that would allow nurses to practice independently after 6,000 hours of work under a physician's supervision. The bill was never placed on the House calendar, a roadblock which some nurses point to opposition from House Floor Leader Rep. Jonathan Patterson, R-Lee’s Summit.
Dmitry Martirosov, Molly Miller, Aidan Pittman, Grant Green and Madeline Shannon contributed to this story.

2024.05.18 13:38 unic0rn_scrapple I think my son has High Functioning Autism

My son is 5 1/2 years old. For his entire life I could always tell some things were slightly different about him compared to his peers. At first, I blamed it on the pandemic and just being locked inside for months and due to that, it affected him socially/emtionally. But looking into it deeper, I think he might be on the spectrum. In my county, it takes about a year to get an appointment with a pediatric neurologist. I’ve brought my concerns to his regular pediatrician many times and it’s always met with “he’s not on the spectrum, he’s fine. He has friends, he is able to go to camp in the summers, he can function at school, etc”. As his kindergarten year is coming to a close and kids are starting to mature a bit more, I think my pediatrician is wrong and I just want to be able to get him the support that he needs, especially in school. For background, he’s never had any issues with language or expression. Here are some of the things that I noticed that have brought me to this conclusion:
-he did not walk until 19.5 months -he has friends and his peers enjoy him but he’s a bit socially awkward and doesn’t pick up on most social cues. -He can be very sensitive and emotional and will cry/break down very easily. It’s hard for him to regulate his emotions when he’s in this state. -he’s very sensitive to loud noises -he’s fearful -doesn’t like change -very very picky eater (only like bland foods) -toe walker -when he was younger, and sometimes even now, he would line his matchbox cars up a lot -excellent memory -becomes fixated on random things (the time on the clock, his school bus number, if he see’s a construction vehicle on the road, etc).
He’s still so young and I know that intervention/support is the way to go. I guess my question is, for those who have kids who are HFA, do you see the same things? What have you done to help your kiddos? What is helping them thrive?

2024.05.18 13:37 Fyraltari Chapter Eight: The Colovian Frontier (2024/05/18)

Colovia long been a vital component of the Empire, its mineral riches and hardy people, ideally suited to serve in the Legions, complementing the Niben's vast agricultural output and advanced wizardry. This is for these very reasons that, during the Second Great War, the Aldmeri focused their initial assault on the region. But the devastation brought on by the fierce fighting would pale in comparison to the ravages brought on by the Silver Plague, often carried there from far-off lands by unsuspecting human Legionnaire or Elven soldiers. As a result the region suffered the highest death toll of the epidemic, with estimates ranging from three fourths to five sixths of the population dying. Ghastly tales abound of cohorts coming to the defense of specific settlements only to find them inhabited only by corpses showing the infamous pale sheen that gave the disease its name. In order to survive, the people fled towns and cities to the relative isolation of the countryside. While some gathered to the ancient Wayshrines of the Divines whose blessings seem to offer some amount of protection (in particular those dedicated to Arkay near Skingrad and Kvatch), most turned to banditry with a crueltry born of desperation. This period of lawlessness, colloquially known as "The Days of Lean Wolves", crippled any attempt at centralized governments and even today, almost two hundred years later, the Colovian city-states can only reliably control their close surroundings.
The largest and most powerful city of Colovia is Chorrol. Of all the kingdoms of the region it is the one who has changed the least from the days of the Empire. Indeed, Chorrol fancies herself the leader of reborn "Colovian Estates" and a rival of Cheydinhal for the legacy of the Empire of Cyrodiil, to the point that her monarchs have eschewed the title of king in favor of that of Archduke of Colovia. The greatest pride of the Chorrolinas is the Great Chapel of Stendarr, which has been continously expanded in size to serve as fortress to the Knightly Order of the Crusaders of Stendarr, which has swelled to numbers not seen since the Interregnum of the Second Era. More academically-minded visitors will no doubt seek the College of Whispers, seated in the Great Oak Plaza and whose advances in enchanting, though religiously controversial, have done wonders for the economy of the city, which relies mainly on lumber, tin and copper.
The second most powerful city in the region, and Chorrol's main rival, is Skingrad, the City of Julianos. During the First Great War, the city's count was revealed by the invading Elves to have been an undying vampire, Janus Hassildor, who had ruled the county continously since the late Third Era through intermediaries and passing himself as his own descendants. While he was saved in extremis from death by sunlight exposure in public by faithful servants, the visible toll the punishment had taken on him had made his nature undeniable and following the White-Gold Concordate, Titus II saw fit to name General Jonna Countess of Skingrad, as reward for her service during the Great War. Unfortunately for the people of the City, their new Nordic Countess was a soldier through and through and her main concern was preparing for the coming second conflict with the Dominion, all other matters be damned, and she became widely unpopular. Nonetheless, when the city found herself to be among the first urban center hit by the Sivler Plague just as an Aldmeri army marched on, Conutess Jonna recognized the impossibility of holding under siege and ordered the entire city to be evacuated while she lead her troops into a sacrificial charge against the Elves. It is perhaps then unsurprising that when Janus Hassildor made himself known again, his former subjects flocked to the one who they associated with their former Golden age. King Janus now openly rules the City as a vampire, a condition shared by several of his courtiers, though he insists that they only feed on those criminals sentenced to death and willing donors (indeed it is rumored to be a way of quick advancement within the Vampire King's court). Despite the best efforts of "the wine capital of Cyrodiil", this state of affair casts a gloomy image on the city, something not helped by the persistent rumors that the ghosts of the Elven army, who allegedly all died of the plague less than a day after taking the city, haunt the streets at night.
While her leadership has traditionally belogned to the Crown party of Redguards, descended from the Totambu aristocracy of Yokuda, the common people of Elinhir have always mingled with their Cyrodiilic neighbors to the East and adopted many trappings of their culture, to the point the city is now considered a part of Colovia rather than Hammerfell by her people, something that the Yokedate to the South-West objects to in the strongest possible way. As such, it is perhaps unsuprising that when the city's nobility fell victim to the plague, the Elinhirri turned to the Blackcasters, the ancient order of wizards who gave the "City of Mages" its epithet. While their remedies where only mildly effective in combatting the Plague, their potent destruction magic proved invaluable in defending the city against its various enemies. As a result the Elinhirri are now ruled by a concil of six Archmagisters, each specializing in one of the Schools of Magic, who serve for life (after which their surviving colleagues pick their replacement from the order's most talented wizards). Should the council be tied, a, elected representative of the common people, the Speaker, whose role is otherwise purely advisory, is allowed a deciding vote.
During the Interwar Period, the ancient city of Sutch, which had become nothing more than a ruin occupied by bandits was re-fortified to defend against and invasion from Valenwood. The old Great Chapel of Kynareth was rebuilt and commoners moved from the Highlands to support the Garrison. While it was undeniably fought over fiercely, it is unknown which side (if any) came on top as the belligerants were decimated byt the plague and all corpses found inside were burned by the town's new masters. Indeed when the Plague had abated and people moved to re-settle the city, they found it already inhabited, by goblins. Several tribes had come under the leadership of a particularly cunning warlord and taken the fortress as their own. As the humans prepared to make war, to free their homeland, the Primate of Kynareth, Andreas Jarrol, brokered a peaceful solution to the conflict, allowing humans and goblin-ken to co-exist as he spread the the teachings of Kynareth to the primitives, today the city is still lead by Goddess' Primate. Sutch remains the smallest of city states of Colovia, but it profits immensely from trade with nearby Anvil and the Freehold Republic.
Kvatch was long a successful example of a city re-ermerging from the Days of the Lean Wolves as the ruling monarchs took advantage of Bsomeri refugees fleeing the chaos of Valenwood to bolster their economy and even found satellite cities. Unfortunately a fringe movement of Ayleid Revivalists successfully overthrew them and created a "New Ayeleid Imperium" which spread over Valenwood, leaving the city a client state of Silvenar. Furthermore the Chantry of Akatosh was made to incorporate ever more elements of Almderi/Ayleid religion, now even referring to the Time God as Auri-El and open worship of the Daedric Prince Meridia. Despite this state of affair, many Kvatchians have kept ties with Colovia and a small but growing Akatoshic movement gathers regularly at the Wayshrine of Akatosh near the City.
The final city of note to mention is Sancre Tor, the Craddle of Empires. The Golden Hill had been abandonned and considred cursed since the days of Tiber Septim but in 4E 266, the many minotaur tribes of Cyrodiil congregated towards Sancre Tor, at the behest of the Cow-Queen Ahrzum, who had received a vision of her distant ancestor Morihaus, and proceeeded to rebuild the city with amazing speed. This was initially witnessed with worry by the neigbouring towns and the city of Chorrol in particular who clashed several times with the Manbeasts as they foraged for supplies. But in 4E 320, the largest nomad horde yet seen moved through the region, and both cities allied together to repel them, this alliance was followed by a trade deal, and soon enough the Kingdom of Sancre Tor became a recognized polity of Cyrodiil. It has even become a major pilgrimage site as people come to pray on the spots where Alessia, Reman and Tiber were granted the Amulet of Kings. The Minotaurs have allowed this although they keep their own religion, whose major figures are the Heavenly Bull, Morihaus, his mother the Storm, his wife Alessia and her father Shezarr.
As explained above, these cities only control a fraction of the region and many villages and small towns are de facto independent, while large stretches of lands remain unclaimed, their mineral and agricultural wealths dormant. However this sorry state of affairs is soon to be a thing of the past as the East Empire Company has vastly invested in the revalorisation of the region by re-establishing ancient roads (made secure by Company security forces trained by Legion veterans), connecting isolated villages, and sponsoring indepedent settlers. Colovia shall soon enough once more be a beacon of civilization for the rest of Tamriel!
Yzmul gra-Maluk: by "connecting villages" and "sponsoring settlers" they mean using predatory loans to trap them in debt and use them as cheap labor, at least until they can get undead to do it for even less. They are entire tracks of lands where the EEC might as well be the government. Makes sense, the Potentate's got some restrictions about how bad you can treat your people and that's already too much for the EEC fatcats. Also, most people I've talked to in Kvatch don't seem to mind having Bosmer, sorry Ayleid, rulers instead of humans. And the goblins of Sutch are on equal footing with the Colovians there, hell, it's their connection with the goblins of the Freehold that made trade possible.

2024.05.18 12:44 blackman3694 Are rotas still hard to read?

Hi, wanted to get an idea if this was still problem. During my med school days on rotation we used to get sent a rota for each placement usually in an excel file and it was pain the backside to read. Then you had to keep checking it daily to see where you should be, sometimes I'd add it manually to Google calendar but that was also a pain in the arse becuase it had to be manually done.
Is this still an issue or have they moved generally to some form of electronic system?
If I created a programme that takes your excel rota and spits out a .ics download that can automatically be added to your calendar is that useful to anyone?

  • Houses and businesses in the Houston region are attempting to clean up and regain power.
  • Strong gusts reaching up to 100 mph on Thursday destroyed glass in downtown Houston.
  • The Houston region has been alerted to the possibility of poor air quality this weekend in addition to the heat.
In the wake of devastating storms that left nearly a million people without electricity, thousands of houses and businesses in the Houston region are attempting to clean up and regain power.
The Houston National Weather Service issued a warning, cautioning residents not to overdo it while cleaning up and informing them of the signs of heat fatigue. According to PowerOutage.us, the number of houses and businesses without electricity in the area on Friday night was over 555,000, a decrease from nearly one million.

Houston storm

Strong gusts reaching up to 100 mph on Thursday destroyed glass in downtown Houston, and a tornado made landfall close to the Cypress suburb in northwest Houston. The storms that stormed across Harris County, which encompasses Houston, claimed the lives of at least four individuals.
Judge Lina Hidalgo of Harris County stated on Friday that certain neighborhoods would need “weeks” to get their power back.
The Houston Health Department declared that it would give away 400 free portable air conditioners to the elderly, disabled, and parents of children with impairments in the region. The Houston region has been alerted to the possibility of poor air quality this weekend in addition to the heat. There was a chance of heavy rain in eastern Louisiana and central Alabama, and there was a flash flood warning in some areas of Louisiana until Saturday.
A large portion of Houston was rendered impassable due to the extensive devastation, leaving streets covered in broken glass, trees, and debris.
Government offices were closed on Friday in conjunction with the cancellation of classes for nearly 400,000 students by school districts in the Houston region. The roadways were flooded and strewn with fallen power wires and broken traffic lights, and city officials advised residents to avoid going downtown.
State troopers were among the many police officers stationed in the area to deter looting, while Houston Mayor John Whitmire issued a warning. Hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, and strong winds since April 26 prompted President Joe Biden to declare a disaster in seven counties in Texas, including Harris. People impacted by the disasters can now access federal money thanks to his action.

Autism: Things Indian Parents/Students need to know…
I want to raise awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) among Indian students and, especially, adults. Many Indian schools and parents lack knowledge about learning disabilities, leading to numerous children with ASD remaining undiagnosed. This lack of diagnosis often means their challenges persist into adulthood.
Children with ASD often struggle academically, resulting in poor grades and subpar school performance. This can lead to limited career opportunities and poor life choices, contributing to a life of hardship. Beyond career and financial struggles, individuals with ASD frequently experience difficulties with social interactions, leading to strained personal and professional relationships. This isolation can result in loneliness and depression.
I am not a psychologist/neuroscientist but I did some research on my own, and here are some traits of ASD:

Common Traits:

  1. Poor social interaction
  2. Difficulty understanding the world, emotionally.
  3. Hyperfocus leading to loneliness, depression, and anxiety
  4. Sensitivity to sensory stimuli: Overreaction to loud noises, bright lights, strong smells, or certain textures (or even towards certain types of clothing/food)
  5. Repetitive behaviours: Engaging in repetitive movements, routines, or ritual. Going to the same coffee shop, ordering similar dish. Wearing similar type of clothing.
  6. Speech and language difficulties: Delayed speech development, trouble with conversational skills, or unusual speech patterns. Stutter, low self esteem etc.
  7. Trouble with changes: Difficulty adapting to new situations or changes in routine. Not being able to adapt to new circumstances quickly. Feeling left out in newer places (for a substantial amount of time).

Possible Traits:

  1. Hyper focused career: People with ASD often have extreme passion for specific topics, leading to career success.
  2. Inherent creativity: Their unique way of thinking and visualizing often results in high creativity.
  3. Deep relationships: Despite lacking social skills, they may form deep, empathetic, and altruistic relationships. (Although very few)
  4. Attention to detail: Remarkable ability to notice and remember small details and patterns.
  5. Logical thinking: Strong skills in logic and analysis, often excelling in subjects like math and science. They are good at compartmentalising thoughts.
  6. Strong memory: Exceptional long-term memory, especially for facts, dates, and details (for example remembering 100 year calendar)
  7. Visual and spatial skills: Superior ability to understand and manipulate objects in space, which can be advantageous in fields like art, engineering, and architecture.
  8. Unique problem-solving skills: Innovative approaches to solving problems that others might not see.
  9. Intense focus on interests: Deep and specific interests that they pursue with great passion and expertise.
I'm not an expert on this topic, but as someone on the spectrum, I've faced my share of challenges. By sharing my experiences, I hope to increase awareness, especially among scientifically-minded Indians :)
Although this is not necessary (shameless plug), but I have written everything in details in my blog.

2024.05.18 09:16 --o---- Looking for a job, currently work with machines a county over. But want to leave to give my kid a better education.

Title says some of it. I'm not far from Erie, and I used to go there all the time for punk shows back when I was an Edinboro student.
I live a county over, and I'm thinking of Cathedral Prep for my kid's high school. Problem is, I know nothing about Erie. Before 2019, I lived in China. Other than the airport, and maybe Quaker Steak or Popeyes on 12th, I've never spent time in Erie.
I work currently at a manufacturing job, decently paid for this area anyways, A county over, as I said. What's the going rate for a job like that in Erie? And what's the job market overall there? Ideally, I'd rather do IT since that's what I did before I moved back to my hometown. But I'm fine, probably better off, tinkering with machinery. Happier at least.
I have a year before I make the move, so of course I'll do additional research, job hunting, all of that. But I reckon I could at least start out and ask Reddit for some possible input to the local economy, jobs, decent living wages, that sort of thing.
And yes... it's Warren.

2024.05.18 08:06 Dear-Cockroach-6979 Trying to figure out a path to take…

(Sorry, it’s kinda long)
Hey everyone,
A bit about me: I grew up in a toxic household with an alcoholic abusive single mother. She had anywhere from 15-20 stray cats in our home that she spoiled and loved more than me. She sure made that clear! My father left me and my mother when I was two years old and he never came back. I was put into the California foster care system at age 13 due to my mother being reported multiple times by my junior high school counselor. From there I went to several mental hospitals, lockdown facilities and group homes up to my 18th birthday. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder back in my adolescent years. I haven’t been evaluated as an adult but I’m sure I would be diagnosed with MDD if I were.
I have spent almost my entire adult life doing nothing with myself. I spent a lot of time early on sleeping in my car and showering at my friends houses. My grandma in Arizona helped me out a great deal and let me stay with her and find work, and I was proud of myself although I was working a menial janitorial job at a casino. I’m pretty tech savvy and skilled with automotive repair but I never pursued further education. When my grandma passed away in 2007 I got severely depressed but I managed to get a place to live with roommates and held down a full time job, again at a casino doing janitorial work. Developed a gambling addiction and an alcohol addiction. Got a DUI in 2008 and that started my legal troubles. Lost my place and lost my job.
I slept in my car and worked at casinos doing menial work again. Met a woman at one of the jobs and got married April 2010. She had a few kids with a bunch of baby daddy drama, and I couldn’t deal with it so I just walked away and the divorce was finalized by the end of the year. I stopped drinking after that. From there I kept working until 2011, when I decided to quit my job, take my old Subaru XT and hit the road. Went all over the southwest US sleeping in the car and exploring, got a few tickets for no insurance, got my license suspended for said tickets and also for not paying my payments on the DUI. I got to Albuquerque NM and my car finally croaked on me. Transmission failure. Slept in it for a week or so in a mini-mall parking lot until the cops were called on me and unsurprisingly took my car. I was officially a street person at age 26.
I spent several years hitchhiking, panhandling, dumpster diving, hopping freight trains and finding spots to sleep or camp wherever I could. I was so depressed that I didn’t take very good care of myself and had no desire whatsoever to try to better myself and dig out of the hole I got myself into. I used to call myself an urban survivalist. I remained in this state of mind until late 2022 when dental problems nearly killed me. I finally found a place to stay in Nevada with a lady I called a foster mother but I had a very hard time getting used to being housed. I got all my teeth yanked and a set of dentures thanks to Nevada Medicaid. I got a job at a car wash for six months but gave up the job due to stress at home and workplace nepotism. I even got a few credit cards and got my score up to 719! Anyhow, foster mother was an alcoholic, she started to remind me of my biological mother and I couldn’t stand it anymore. I had a few thousand dollars saved up and moved back to Arizona a couple of months ago.
I am currently at a weekly motel and have been attempting to find any work I can. Managed to get interviews for dishwasher jobs, housekeeping jobs, janitorial jobs and night crew at a grocery store. Haven’t heard back from any of them though. I have half of my savings left and it seems inevitable that I’ll run out of money pretty soon.
I have a good feeling that the ridiculously long gap of employment looks terrible on my resume and that may be a reason I’m not getting anything. I mean, what do I tell the interviewer, that I was a damn bum?
I like to think I’m pretty smart. I was disassembling and reassembling IBM PC’s before I hit puberty. I was the computer technician for my high school back in the Windows XP era. Once I started driving I began teaching myself automotive repair with Chilton and Haynes manuals along with plenty of trial and error. It blew people’s minds when I, a dirty bum, helped get their car back on the road if I noticed they needed assistance. I helped a man I met at a park and did an engine swap on his Nissan Xterra over a couple weekends in exchange for new camping gear.
I can’t get work as a mechanic or do any driving related jobs unless I get my license back and it would take a LOT of money to get it back. On top of that I have to have an ignition interlock in any vehicle I drive. I wouldn’t mind getting into computer repair but I don’t have the certification to do so, and I’ve been out of the loop for a long time. I have a MacBook Air M1 and wish I could learn a way to make money with it like some sort of remote job but that seems impossible to me at this point.
For the record, I still don’t drink and I’ve never done a hard drug in my life. I haven’t smoked weed in months so I am able to pass a drug test if I were hired somewhere. Also, I have no felonies whatsoever on my record. Some people like to be stereotypical so I figured I’d throw that out there.
I guess what I’m asking is what should I do at this point? What path would you take if you were in my shoes? I won’t lie, suicide has been on my mind a lot lately. I don’t have many friends and I don’t have any family to talk to. I don’t like being a burden on anyone. Should I just accept that I’m gonna probably be homeless again, possibly for the rest of my life? Is there anywhere in the US that I could possibly get back on my feet with some sort of labor work and a place to sleep? I’d move anywhere if I knew I had a shot. Am I a lost cause at age 38? I’d love to hear some ideas!

2024.05.18 06:33 Crafty_Gur_2304 Is she trying to get me in trouble

Hi. I am a teacher assistant with two other women and the teacher in my classroom is unprofessional, absent minded and passive aggressive. I got another job for next school year in another district, so I only have a few days left. I took two days off this week, both were approved by principal. One local sick day for a dr appointment and the other state personal. It’s a well known fact that when you leave a district, burning local sick time is against policy but people do it. Meaning calling in when not sick. We put the days on our class calendar so she knows who is not there and our sub for the day. So my two days were up there beforehand. The teacher asked a fellow co-worker what time off I was using, local sick or personal state. She said she was hoping I was burning local sick. Why? None of her business at all. I really find this not only unprofessional but it’s making me feel a type of way. Like she’s trying to get me in trouble. Am I being paranoid?

2024.05.18 05:37 nardo_polo The short version on STAR - YES on 20-349 and please spread the word!

Hey Eugene! Spring is in the air, and something awesome is on the ballot! The Equal Vote Coalition encourages a YES vote on Measure 20-349, STAR Voting for Eugene. Given the amount of disinformation out there on this measure, this missive aims to explain and answer some of the common questions, misunderstandings, and outright balderdash that may have shown up in your mailbox or in lazy local media.
What is STAR?
STAR is a new voting method that gives all voters an equal voice, more expression, and a fair count. STAR helps us find where we agree, rather than continuing the persistent amplification of our disagreements that is endemic to our political system today.
How does STAR work?
STAR lets every voter 'star' every candidate for local office on a scale from 0 (worst) to 5 (best), and elects the majority preferred candidate between the two candidates who get the most stars overall.
Voters will get a ballot with the instructions to give their favorite or favorites 5 stars, their least favorite or least favorites 0 stars, and to star the rest as desired. Leaving a candidate blank counts as 0 stars, and equal preferences are allowed.
If you want to vote in STAR just like you vote now, no problem! Just give your favorite (say it’s Bob) 5 stars and move on.
But if you have opinions on any of the other candidates, you can express them too. Say you want anybody but Bob. You can give him a zero and everyone else 5. Or say you really like only the Blue Team candidates. You can give all of them high scores and everyone else zero or one. STAR gives all the voters an equal voice on all the candidates, and is counted both using the overall level of support to determine the top two, and the preference between them on each ballot to determine the overall winner.
Why should we want to change?
Our country is being politically ripped apart from the repeated use of a fundamentally unequal voting system that magnifies our disagreements rather than finding where we have true consensus, letting well-funded special interests dominate the political process. A house divided falls, and the way we vote is at the root of this division because the vote determines who get to make all public policy decisions for us.
How is our current voting system unequal?
Our current voting system, where we are limited to choosing one candidate in a field of many, is only equal if there are two or fewer candidates in the race. Any time there are more than two candidates, voters who like more than one candidate are at a disadvantage to those who like only one, because the similar candidates divide support, meaning that the weight of your vote is inversely proportional to the number of candidates you like.
This root inequality has really bad consequences: we are repeatedly told only to vote for one of two polarized, cash-loaded “frontrunners” and not to “waste our votes” on ‘long shot’ candidates we might really like.
What about ‘One Person, One Vote’?
The principle of One Person, One Vote has been defined by the Supreme Court to mean that, as nearly as is practicable, all voters votes are to carry equal weight. Yet since the founding of the nation, we have used an unequal voting method at every level of government, which has yielded a gridlocked partisan duopoly deep in the money’s pocket.
How do we know if a voting method provides an equal weight vote to every voter?
The test of equality of weight is balance. We know two objects weigh the same amount if they are level on a balance. This concept directly applies to voting: we know a voting method provides an equal vote if for every way a voter can express a vote, there is a balancing expression another voter can cast such that the election outcome is the same whether neither or both of their votes are counted.
We understand this intuitively in every two-candidate election today. You vote for Frank, I vote for DeAndre, and the election result is the same, whether both or neither of us voted, because our votes balance each other out. But every time there are more than two candidates, our current method makes the vote impossible to balance, and thus our current method fails to live up to the principle of One Person, One Vote.
How does STAR fix this?
STAR allows the voters an equal and nuanced expression on every candidate. Think of the example of Bob above. If your vote was for “only Bob” and my vote was for “anyone but Bob”, our votes exactly balance out. In STAR, for whatever way you choose to fill in the ballot, there is an equal, balancing expression I can cast, no matter how many candidates are in play. STAR fully realizes the mandate for the equal weight vote in both steps of its counting process.
How can we be sure our vote is being counted in this new system?
A STAR election is counted in just two simple steps using basic addition, meaning its results are fully transparent for the voters and candidates. STAR stands for Score Then Automatic Runoff, which in four words is exactly how it works:
First, all the stars for the candidates are added up from all the voters. The two candidates who get the most stars overall are the finalists.
Second, all the ballots are checked again to determine the winner. Your full vote goes to the finalist you gave more stars, or is counted as a vote of equal preference if you scored both finalists the same.
This means that you get an equal voice on each candidate’s ability to be one of the two finalists and also that your full preference is counted between those two, whether you gave one a single star and the other zero, or one a 5 and the other a 4. STAR effectively combines a much more nuanced and accurate primary and a runoff into a single vote for all the voters and all the candidates, which means voters get real choices in the general election, and our local candidates don’t ever have to run two back-to-back elections for the privilege of serving us.
"That sounds complicated."
If you think so, give it a try! You can create your own STAR Voting poll at the http://star.vote web site and get a little practice with STAR. Make a quick poll for lunch options and send it to some friends. You can also try it with our present candidates for Mayor here: http://star.vote/eug24mayor. This site lets you see both how ballots are cast and how the simple two-step counting process works. After trying it once or twice, it’s cake.
What are the advantages of STAR versus the status quo?
  1. Every voter gets an equal voice on all the candidates, meaning no more “wasted votes” supporting long shots you might really like, and no more voting against your true favorites by choosing only the “lesser evil.” With STAR you can fully support what you believe in, as well as offer token support to an ok candidate and help prevent your worst outcome.
  2. Candidates have a real incentive to reach out to all of us, rather than just focusing on their “base” voters. This is particularly important in districts dominated by one or the other major political party, as in those districts, vast numbers of voters are effectively shut out of the process entirely.
  3. Candidates for local office never have to run two campaigns back to back, meaning less time spent and less influence from raising money. Emily Semple and Josh Skov, who ran against each other in one of the most expensive races for Eugene City Council, have both endorsed this measure.
  4. STAR has been extensively vetted by voting scientists, and found to be one of the very most accurate and strategy-resistant voting systems ever analyzed using modern methods. It was also used by the Independent Party of Oregon in their 2020 nominating contest. You can read the Independent Party’s glowing endorsement in your voter guide.
  5. Unlike “ranking” systems, STAR uses the ubiquitous 5-star rating scale, meaning it’s “user interface” is already widely familiar. As Bruce Tinker wrote in to the Weekly, even grade school kids know how to vote with STAR.
Is this the same as Ranked Choice Voting?
No. STAR is a major upgrade.
Some folks in Oregon have been advocating another system called Ranked Choice Voting as a cutting edge solution to our political ills. The truth is that it’s not cutting edge, nor does it solve the root problem. Ranked Choice (also known as the Instant Runoff Method) is a 150+ year-old system that has been adopted and subsequently repealed dozens of times around the United States in the last century and a half, and has regained a measure of traction in recent years due to inaccurate marketing messages as well as the wider awareness of our national political peril.
Unlike STAR, which allows voters an independent opinion on each candidate, Ranked Choice requires the voters to list candidates in a preference order. If you try to express an equal preference in RCV, your vote is disqualified. And while the much higher rate of ballot “spoilage” in Ranked Choice Voting is problematic, particularly amongst already marginalized voters, the real dealbreaker for RCV is how all of those rankings are counted to find the winner.
In elections with three or more viable candidates, RCV only counts the secondary preferences of some of the voters and ignores others, which can and does lead to demonstrably non-representative results. As just one example, Alaska, which just adopted Ranked Choice statewide, had such a system failure on its very first use, and Alaskans will vote this year on whether or not to repeal the system as a result. You can learn more about that election at https://rcvchangedalaska.com.
This is not a criticism of most RCV advocates. Most are simply parroting inaccurate marketing messages they’ve been told about the system. For example you might hear that “In Ranked Choice you can honestly vote your true preferences, because if your first choice can’t win, your vote will transfer to your second choice.” This is false. In Ranked Choice, your vote only transfers to your second choice if your first choice is eliminated before your second, so only some voters whose favorite couldn’t win get their second choices counted, leading to skewed results in meaningful contests (see the Alaska link above).
Ranked Choice also requires centralized tabulation, which would be a fundamental change to how Oregon counts votes now, with significant negative implications for election integrity and voter trust, as well as unacceptable delays for election results.
Is STAR related to RCV?
STAR was invented in part to solve the serious problems presented by Ranked Choice, while actually delivering on the stated goals of Ranked Choice advocates. In STAR, your full preferences are counted in both steps, meaning you don’t have an incentive to be dishonest on the ballot.
STAR can also be counted by precinct or county, as we count votes in Oregon today, with transparent results that show the true level of support from the electorate for each candidate, regardless of who the media says is an “electable frontrunner.”
So why am I getting all these messages from groups with nice sounding names opposing STAR?
This is the truly sad part of this campaign. A group of Portland politicos are working to jam Ranked Choice down Oregon’s throat this November for statewide offices. Perhaps because they see the passage of STAR for Eugene elections as an obstacle to implementing an inferior system statewide, they’ve spun up a number of brand new political committees with nice sounding names whose first actions are the spread of misinformation in Eugene, a political technique known as astroturfing.
These groups have misrepresented STAR to Eugene media, blasted likely voters with misleading text messages, and sent multiple garbage glossys to our mailboxes. They even managed to snooker our local print rags, who have repeated their messages without meaningful journalistic scrutiny. You can see the full backstory on this sorry web of deception, as well as answers to all of the oppo talking points, at starvoting.org/yes.
We are hoping Eugene voters can rise above the noise.
STAR Voting was invented here. Its genesis was an unforeseen outcome of the first Equal Vote Conference at the University of Oregon in 2014, conceived as a bridge between the nation’s leading advocates of Approval and Ranked Choice Voting. A passionate and mostly volunteer crew of reform advocates and voting scientists from all corners of the political spectrum have been working tirelessly for a decade to bring this much-needed solution into the world.
Please do the deep dive. Please vote YES on 20-349 (and get your ballot in by Tuesday 8PM!). Please share this with your friends. And please get involved! You can sign up at starvoting.org .
Also, feel free to ask any questions you don't feel were properly addressed above :-).

2024.05.18 04:21 anonymous_anon42069 need some help

let’s say in 2020 someone was driving through Colorado on a road trip back to their home state of Texas and they were pulled over for “speeding through an inactive work zone”. The person spoke to the officer and after back and forth they receive a ticket with a court date on the ticket. The person accused goes back to Texas and calls before the court date to try and pay the fine on the ticket, but the people working in the county’s office tells the person that their name and ticket isn’t in their system and the officer never put in the ticket but that they can go ahead and “pay anyways”.
the person who received the ticket did not pay because there was no ticket in the system to pay, and called again after the court date to ask and there was still nothing in the system concerning the ticket. does this happen? do police officers forget to put in tickets or sometimes just choose not to?
the person can’t find any warrants for failure to appear or unpaid fines online but it’s also hard to find websites that can actually give accurate information when it comes to that. this person also has had a background check since then for school and a job and nothing negative has come back on them. should the person just move on? or is there something to worry about? it’s been four years.

2024.05.18 03:35 Ivan_Redditor 2000s MCU (Phase 2)

2000s MCU (Phase 2)
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
I would have Matthew Vaughn do this (if it wasn’t for those execs writing a fake script for Halle Berry) or Sam Raimi as some sort of side project for him so that he could also take time developing the story of Spider-Man 3.
I would keep the original ideas of TLS like the opening where there are random interferences around the world. The mutant cure and the creation of Sentinels are responses to these attacks.
I would also make Nightcrawler an official member of the team instead of just being left out after X2.
Cyclops still leaves the mansion and DOESN’T GET FUCKING KILLED OFF. He comes back in the final battle as a deus ex machina ala Han Solo in A New Hope and Harry Osborn in Spider-Man 3. Jean and Professor X don’t get killed off. Jean turns into a figure of energy in the end and tells the X-Men that she’ll be watching as he ascends to the stars.
I would add a few more scenes of Angel to show his acceptance of being a mutant while showing his rocky relationship with his father and give him a bigger role in the film.
Rogue doesn’t take the mutant cure and is officially an X-Men member. She also is more like the comics counterpart and would fight against the Magneto-controlled Sentinels in the final battle.
The Brotherhood would be the same, but with more members. Scarlet Witch (Christina Ricci) and Quicksilver (Jensen Ackles) are introduced. Juggernaut (who’s much bigger than the one in the movie we got and is revealed to be Charles’ adopted brother), Callisto, and Pyro are more badass in this version and wouldn’t get done dirty.
This would also be the movie where the X-Men are exposed to the world, which make people see them as terrorists, but the public reception improves as the film progresses. It ends with Cyclops telling a speech to the world that they’re here to protect them from world-ending threats and that they fight for mutant rights.
More Oscorp, Stark Industries, Daily Bugle, and S.H.I.E.L.D. references.
Blade: Trinity (2006)
This would be a Blade-centred story, no Hannibal King or Jessica Biel. Vampire is a much better villain in this version. Moon Knight (Aaron Eckhart) and Werewolf By Night (Benicio Del Toro) are introduced here and helps Blade fight Dracula in the finale.
This would set up the Midnight Sons.
Doctor Strange (2006)
Same plot as the 2016 film. Johnny Depp is Doctor Strange, Christoph Waltz is Kaecilius, and Keanu Reeves is Baron Mordo (him and Depp switched would work too).
Post credits scene shows Blade in the Sanctum Sanctorum, telling Strange that he needs his help to assemble a team.
Spider-Man 3 (2007)
I’d probably keep all the deleted scenes that Raimi made. It would be both the Editor’s Cut and The Raimi Cut combined into one. I would’ve gone with the original Venom design, which looked creepier than the one we got instead. Eddie and Sandman get more screen time and I wouldn’t make him be Uncle Ben’s killer. MJ has something to do in this film and helps Peter and Harry in the final battle.
Gwen is the damsel in distress here instead of MJ and that she dies in the final battle. Her and Harry’s death would make Peter heartbroken after all of this. The ending will be the same as the actual film and show Peter's start of moving on from Gwen and starting a new life with MJ.
Baxter Building and Stark Industries building sightings also appear.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2007)
Same as the film we got but this would be the introduction of Black Widow (Milla Jovovich). Ali Larter would play Sharon Carter and Will Smith would play Falcon. Alexander Pierce turns out to be Red Skull, showing that the Tesseract swooped him to the 50s and that (in disguise) he’s the one who actually made S.H.I.E.L.D. absorb Hydra.
Red Skull would be arrested and sent to The Raft by General Ross in the ending.
Ghost Rider (2007)
This would be R Rated and would be a lot darker. Johnny’s transformation into Ghost Rider is more grotesque and disgusting. Mephisto would have his comic accurate look. Blackheart doesn’t have that Twilight-esque relationship with Eva Mendes. Carter Slade would ironically be recasted to Harrison Ford.
Blade appears in the post-credit scene.
Iron Man 2 (2008)
This version still has Justin Hammer (Bob Odenkirk for a Rockwell take, Ian McDiarmid for a comic accurate take) as the main villain, with Whiplash as his henchman. This would also showcase Tony’s alcoholism much better. Would also set up more references to The Ten Rings. Whiplash gets the suit and becomes Crimson Dynamo for this version.
The Incredible Hulk (2008)
The Leader is the main villain. It would just be u/vampira199x Hulk 2003 pitch that he made for his 2000s MCU, which I liked and was the main inspiration for this pitch while also borrowing ideas from other posts in the subreddit.
The Punisher 2 (2008)
It would just be the 2005 game, but with Barracuda as the villain, no Stark Industries battle, and remove the framing device. More glimpses of the Baxter Building, Oscorp, and Stark Tower in the background of some shots.
Fantastic Four and The Mole Men (2009)
This would have Mole Man (Danny DeVito) and the Moloids as the villain. This would be more space adventure-esque but with the final battle taking place on Earth. Reed and Sue still get married like in ROTSS, but with The Avengers, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Daredevil, and the X-Men (without Wolverine) attending. S.H.I.E.L.D. helps during the final battle.
Daredevil: Born Again (2009)
It would just be DD S3, but with Elektra (Penelope Cruz) and The Hand.
This would introduce Jessica Jones (Liv Tyler). She appears in the ending, taking pictures of Kingpin getting arrested and Daredevil watching on top of the building.
Wolverine: The Story of Weapon X (2010)
I delayed this film a year later for the 2007-2008 writers strike to end (which is one of the reasons why X-Men Origins: Wolverine sucked)
It would still be about his origins and is Rated R, and would be more focused on Wolverine’s origins from getting his bone claws and the darker aspects of the character to his Weapon X experiment, which would end the film.
Cap has a little cameo in the WW2 scenes and there would be mentions of the Weapon Plus program having him as the first guy to participate in the program. More S.H.I.E.LD. references.
Ant-Man and The Wasp (2010)
AIM and Darren Cross (Billy Zane) are the main villains here. It would just be the 2015 film but with the AIM from Iron Man 3. The film ends with Hank creating Ultron.
Thor: The Forbidden Daughter (2011)
It would just be Thor Ragnarok but without Hulk and not killing off the Warriors Three, since they will help him alongside Thor in the final battle. It would also be less comedic and have a much darker tone.
X-Men: First Class (2011)
Same film, but Darwin doesn’t die, he just turns into big ball of energy and shows up in the end after Charles is shot, watching in the sky.
Spider-Man 4 (2011)
Vulture (John Malkovich) is the main villain. It would probably just be the Spider-Man 4 Raimi wanted to make, with Black Cat (Anne Hathaway) to ruin Peter and MJ’s relationship. Felicia would go through some character development from being a cat burglar to a straight up anti-hero.
Luke Cage (Terry Crews) gets introduced in the post credit scene, watching the news coverage of Spider-Man defeating Vulture.
The Defenders (2012)
The Defenders (Spider-Man, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist (Chris Pine)) fight against Kingpin, who has now ruled over the Hand. It would just have the same story as the Netflix show, but with Kingpin as the main villain instead of Alexandra Reid and Elektra dying in the rubble with Kingpin, while Peter saves Matt from dying with her. It ends like the 2003 film.
It also is revealed that Peter and Jessica had a history, since Jessica had a crush on Peter when they were in school together.
The Midnight Sons (2012)
This would be horror-themed and would have Mephisto as the main villain. The lineup would consist of Blade, Moon Knight, Doctor Strange, Hannibal King (Peter Facinnelli), Werewolf by Night (Josh Hartnett), and Elsa Bloodstone (Minnie Driver).
Avengers: Age of Ultron Part 1 (2013)
It would adapt the Age of Ultron storyline justice but with Ultron assembling the Masters of Evil (or Liberators or Masters of Earth): Red Skull, Dr. Doom, Magneto, Sandman, The Mole Man, Loki, and The Leader. Magneto would also seem weary of the inclusion of Schmidt here, especially if you know his origin. Vision (Mark Strong) starts out as a villain here.
The ending shows that they failed, and leads to a bleak and dystopian future where the villains have ruled over the world.
This is also where Black Widow and Hawkeye (Timothy Olyphant) are integrated in the team. Wanda and Pietro too.
The Wolverine (2013)
Set before the events of AOU Part 1, but still the same movie. The Silver Samurai outfit is more smaller and the third act is a fight between him and Logan.
No DOFP tease post credit scene, since I’ll save it for later.
Avengers: Age of Ultron Part 2 (2013)
The Avengers would encourage the help from the F4, X-Men, and Spider-Man to stop them.
Spider-Man would fangirl over meeting Cap, since he often saw him as his idol due to Uncle Ben always telling stories about him and Peter reading a lot of Cap comics when he was a kid.
Cap would recognize Logan from his WW2 days, but Logan doesn’t remember because of the adamantium bullet wiping away his memories.
Magneto, Sandman, and Vision would turn against them and help the Avengers, F4, and X-Men fight the Masters of Evil, which they succeeded. Sandman sacrifices his life while fighting them. Magneto gets arrested and put in the restructured glass prison from X-Men and X2, but more secure. The battle causes a lot of collateral damage, which leads to the government creating the Superhuman Registration Act in response to the Ultron attack in the ending.

2024.05.18 02:05 lilpotatobake AITA for trading my family for a boyfriend and a bachelor's degree?

I (23F) have been struggling with this issue for several months now and have been receiving somewhat mixed reviews, so advice is also welcome. I am also a first time poster and this is going to be long, so hello!
To start, let me give some context to my family dynamic. My parents divorced when I was very little and have since remarried (spouses will be referred to as bonus mom or bonus dad). My dad has always had 100% custody of my brother (20M) and I and we have also moved around a lot, so I have no friends dating before college friends.
With the exception of two seasons of a several month program, I have always lived with my father. He married my bonus mom when I was 18 and they have since had my two sisters (4 and 1 years old) and have a baby on the way. My bonus mom and I have had a good relationship, and while we have had some major rough patches, her and I have both put a lot of effort into our relationship and as a result our relationship grew much better and our respect for each other grew as well. I also very much adore my baby sisters.
My mother married my bonus dad while I was in middle school and have always adored him as well. He has been nothing but kind to myself and my brother and is a massive teddy bear. For a long time my mother and I have been somewhat distant from each other. I think we both just hurt from the decisions she had made in the past, but since then we've grown closer and this situation has made even more so.
All sets of parents are religious. My father and bonus mom are a niche kind of Christian. My mother and bonus dad are more of a typical kind of Christian. This piece is a very dynamic part of the story.
After my dad got a job in another state my bonus mom, brother, two sisters, and myself moved there. I quickly found a college to finish my associates degree that I fell in love with. I finished up my associates with little issue and had planned to stop there. However, when approached by the registrar with a degree audit letting me know I could finish my bachelor's within a year, all of my parents strongly encouraged me to pursue it. I was unsure at first because the amount of debt I had accumulated on this schooling venture made me nervous (the state where I had originally started my degree allowed me to pursue it for free, this one did not), but I chose to pursue it anyway.
That fall semester I started to pursue my bachelor's degree I got to know someone who I had previously noticed and admired from afar. He would become my boyfriend (21M). Let's call him Babe because he is one. Him and I have a lot of the same passions and our shy friendship developed into feelings over the course of the semester. To make the long story short, we ended up sleeping together and going on dates, and throughout this whole ordeal I never once felt used as I had in previous relationships with less intimacy. I felt 100% loved and cared for and I still do to this day.
At the end of the semester during finals week my bonus mom noticed him at the choir and jazz concert that my bonus mom and I both performed in. She had singled him out in the crowd when she noticed him observing me and later that evening asked who that "boy sitting alone" was. I tried to play dumb at first, but said he was a fellow classmate and friend. She asked if we had feelings for one another, to which I said yes. She asked me, "OP, why do you keep getting into these relationships that won't work?" Before this moment she had never seen him before and had never spoken to him before that. She informed me that we would have to talk to my father about this, and then I went to bed.
Side Note
In referring to "these relationships" she is making reference to a coworker I had liked that they also had not met. My dad and bonus mom instructed me to quit my job, which I did. There was also someone else who I had met online in a group of friends I had gotten close with, but they discouraged me from the group chat and from the guy, so I left the chat and him alone.
They had also not wanted me to go to a local Bible study because of how late it was at night and with how early I had to go to a different job in the morning. However, I think their real main concern "there are other young men there that are watching you and one of them could try and follow you home." Those parents live in the country just on the outskirts of town. The poor guy that would have supposedly followed me would have been lured into darkness and to a neighborhood that was very protective of its land.
When I have expressed that I wanted to go because I wanted friends, they told me, "Maybe God just wants you to be alone right now and just focus on Him." I at first thought this was legitimate, but later began to question that line of thinking.
Side Note Finished
Anyways, after that night I had texted Babe informing him what was happening. He told me if he needed to step back so I could work on my relationship with my parents he was more than willing to do so. He was also more than happy to be in my life. Just whatever was best for me. This was not the first time he had suggested this, and it honestly made me not want to let go of him more.
The next morning my father told me I needed to cut ties with Babe. I told Babe about this and we spent most of the day crying. Him and I performed our final concert that evening and I went to the grocery store to pick up some things for my bonus mom. She found out that I was at my concert and not at work and asked why she and my dad hadn't been invited. I told them that in the past I had tried to invite them to other concerts and things and had reminded them multiple times and put them on both calendars (monthly and weekly) for the family to see, but had been blamed for not informing them of my events the night of. I had grown tired of this and eventually stopped inviting them to things. They felt this wasn't fair since I tend to get my dates mixed up for different events, and said that they felt that trust had been broken.
Over the next few days (which was finals week, by the way) many conversations were had. I mostly listened and answered questions. Things seemed to be going well until they found out that we had slept together through a series of questions, and my father had blown up. He became so angry at Babe for "defiling [his] daughter" and described in detail how he wanted to hurt him. When they found out Babe was not a believer like ourselves, my father asked why I had stooped so low. It were these moments that sealed my decision to move out. My dad had assured me he was not angry with me, but I could not shake his anger towards Babe.
They also informed my brother what was going on, and him and I had a long conversation. He wanted me to stay with them at home, but was open to my boyfriend since " he must be really special if you slept with him." By the end of the conversation my brother had a positive impression of Babe and was decidedly Switzerland in this situation.
He had also asked me what I had done in return of my parents' kindness of letting me live rent-free in their home. I reminded him that any second that they needed something I would drop everything and do it for them. As long as I wasn't in class or at my in person job I would go wherever they wanted me to go and do whatever they wanted me to do. I would also help take care of my sisters on nights that I came home before they went to bed. I would give them baths and read them bedtime stories and get them dressed for bed and sometimes even put them to bed. I would watch them whenever I was asked to. If I had to do online work I either had to start late or it was cut short because my bonus mom would ask for help. Most anything that they would ask I would do. During days that I would be home all day I would help get the girls up and even watch them so that my bonus mom could nap and catch up on some much needed sleep. If my time and efforts were going unnoticed I was sadly displeased. I loved taking care of my sisters and helping around the house, but that doesn't mean that those things shouldn't be recognized. I also pointed out that I never asked for anything in return or ask for help with money. Sometimes I would get paid for watching them on date nights and whatnot (which were not often) but I never expected it.
This set of parents had also attempted to convince me to visit my mother and bonus dad and other family who live in another state. The irony of this is that they had thoroughly convinced me not to visit her on two occasions that I had planned to. The next evening my dad and bonus mom both told me the conditions of me living with them:
  1. The truck would be taken away for two months. I would be taken to and from wherever I needed to go. This truck was my grandfather's truck who passed away last summer. My grandmother had been very insistent in wanting to put it in my name, but my dad and I insisted it be put in his name. At this point, the keys had been taken away and I was being transported to and from school. I was regretting not getting this truck in my name.
  2. I would no longer be allowed to finish my bachelor's degree. Neither set of parents had ever contributed any money to my education or programs once high school finished up, with the exception of when I was asked to quit my job. Then my bonus mom and father paid maybe $400-$600 towards my tuition plus the other expenses and rent taken off for about two months before I got my online job with our friend.
  3. I may also be asked to quit my in person job as well.
I told them I wanted to move out.
I had a college friend who was getting married that weekend offer her apartment to me while her and her husband went on their honeymoon for three weeks. That would give me enough time to cram my things into her place and search for a new one. That is where I was planning to stay temporarily. I had a feeling that this may fall through, and asked Babe if I could store some of my things like my furniture at his place and potentially stay there temporarily if my friend's place fell through. He had spoken with his landlord who also lives in the house, and his landlord said it would be okay.
Between all of this, Babe and I called my mother twice and explained the situation. She asked various questions about our relationship, including how to navigate and respect one another's beliefs as well as his family's (his family is Catholic), and we both had confidence that we could have compassion and respect for one another. She encouraged me to listen to my voice and covered the rest of what I needed in order to attend school the next semester. She thought my father putting me at this ultimatum with school was highly unfair and not very cash money (my words not hers).
I told Babe that if I was going to do this, he couldn't leave me and had to stick with me through it. He promised he would and has stuck to that promise to this day.
I removed my wall decor among other decor and hardware and wrapped them in clothes and garbage bags. Babe texted me throughout the night as I did this. I finished up at around 2:00 in the morning.
The next day as my father was taking me to school he asked if I was still with Babe. I said yes. He told me as long as I was still with him and sleeping with him I would have to move out, preferably by that night. The next 10 minutes or so of the drive consisted my father speaking curses over my life. Some of the more memorable include:
"You should take off your head covering. God is not covering you."
"You are rushing to sin and to shed man's blood."
"You will be a curse of destruction to anyone's home you come under."
Etc, etc.
I left the vehicle silently and went to my main building of work to weep. I called Babe crying and he assured me he would be there soon. He was, and him and his friend agreed to help me move some things out of the house before they left to see their families for the three week winter break. Their families lived in a different state. Them putting their break on hold meant a lot to me since his friend and I had hardly spoken before, and we were off. My parents were also on their way to an appointment for my sister about an hour away, so I knew the house would be empty and safe. I had also texted a coworker who knew what was happening and asked her if she could help move things and she agreed to come.
I let Babe and his friend only in the necessary parts of the house to collect my things. His friend mostly stayed by his truck in my driveway. I did my best to separate anything that may be of my parents since I was doing my best to move quickly. At one point I was informed that my bonus mom wanted to speak with me via our neighbor, so I went to go talk to my bonus mom on the phone. I was confused why she hadn't called me directly. I believe my neighbor had noticed unknown people carrying things out of the house and had informed my parents.
Apparently this was a conference call and my bonus mom and dad began to yell at me about how it was inappropriate to bring unknown men to the house and at the police and my father were both on their way. I apologize profusely and told them that I would leave immediately and ask them to call the police off since I was going to leave. I apologize saying that I didn't intend to disrespect them further or cause tensions to heighten, but they said that they would not call the police off and that my dad would not turn around. He also threatened to get in a fist fight with any unknown man on his property.
I told Babe that my father and police were on their way. He hurriedly gathered what he could while I grabbed important documents and things and rushed out of the house.
Lo and behold the cops had arrived and Babe and his friend were being searched. I set my purse down by Babe's friend's truck since it had a pocket knife and pepper spray in it and approached them with my hands up. I was also searched and the three of us were separated for questioning. Soon there were a total of 5 police cars and several police officers circulating between the 3 of us, hungry for the gossip. Unfortunately, Babe's friend was not terribly interesting since he was just trying to help and had no idea what was happening, so he got the least amount of attention. The cops mostly passed between Babe and I since we had the juicy details. All of the cops were confused why this whole situation was happening to begin with. Even those who were religious were confused how my parents could reject my boyfriend without ever speaking to him, and why that would cause me to need to move out in less than 24 hours.
They let us go and we got out of there as fast as we could. It was through this interaction that Babe and I became officially a couple since they had to ask "Who's that in relationship to you?" and boyfriend/girlfriend seemed to be the best response.
We dropped off what we could at my boyfriend's house and we all returned to school so I could ask for a place and they could get whatever Babe's friend needed for their trip. Babe and I said heartfelt goodbyes and I gathered what I could after some crying and a snack, and walked the 45 minutes or so it takes to get to his house. I collapsed into his bed, called out of work, and cried until I passed out.
My friend had still offered her place to me, but I refused saying that I wasn't going to intrude my sorrow on her during a time that was supposed to be joyous for her. I also realized that without a car it would be an hour or more to walk to and from work, and I close so that was not a good option. She did allow me to use her truck, so when my coworker picked me up from work that evening, we grabbed my friend's truck and went to my parents' house to grab everything I could think of that was mine. I informed them that I was coming, and they did not respond. My brother was also instructed not to help me with my move.
My father had locked up the place like Fort Knox so I could not get in through the way that would give me the easiest access to my room. I got in through the front door and went downstairs to open the garage (I lived on the garage level in the basement lol; which was actually quite a nice area; it resembled a little apartment) and found he had disconnected the power to it. When I went upstairs to wait I ran into my dad locking the front door. He turned towards me and looked at me and surprise and said, "You really came in here while we were praying?" I didn't know what to think of that. He reconnected the power to the garage and opened it, and watched coldly as my coworker and I moved things out. At the end, I returned my keys and told my dad that I loved him. He said he loved me too, and my coworker and I went to my boyfriend's house to unload my things.
Babe kept in constant contact with me and his landlord did his best to make sure I felt welcome and took great care of me when I needed it, between making sure I was fed and interacting with someone in my emotional fragility and even taking me to the ER when I was experiencing a lot of pain. His landlord even suggested I could move in, and that is when I began the excruciating process of sifting through all of my things and decorating the room. My mother and bonus dad also made sure to keep in closer contact with me as well, insisting I did nothing wrong but fall in love.
2 close family friends had also reached out to me during the week that followed my leaving. One was gently trying to guide me in the direction that she thought that I should go, but never shamed me. The second one sent me an angry text saying that I left God at my parents house and that I should return back to them, and that what I am doing is 100% wrong, and that I could block her if I want. She later texted me and apologized for her harsh words. I never have responded to either of them.
My father had also tried to withhold my paycheck from me, but eventually put it in the mail and it came to me via an address reroute. My bonus mom texted me saying the way I was speaking/not speaking to my father was dishonoring to him and I need to do better. She texted me that she missed me once. This was all within a week after moving out, and I never responded. I haven't heard from either of them since.
So now a little over 5 months have passed. I have army crawled through the semester and have successfully passed with honors and have graduated. My parents have missed all of the important events that have taken place during the semester, including the graduation ceremony. While I never invited them they also didn't exactly ask. My small group of friends have done their best to show support to me. Even small friends in unlikely places.
My father and bonus mom have not been in contact with me, but have insisted to others that they have tried to reach out to me and that this no contact situation has been 100% my doing. They had apparently been willing to talk until my friend from another state had come to see my graduation and pick up something of hers from my parents house that she had accidentally left with us, as well as my things. She had gone there twice asking for my things that day, and it had turned into a whole situation that ended up with them refusing to give her my items that I had left by accident and asking her to leave multiple times. There has also been a lot of other things that have happened but those are all stories of their own.
I am very happy with Babe as we journey through our relationship together. Well there have been so many emotional breakdowns, a few disagreements, and many, many tears, he has been so compassionate and gentle through it all. He has been so kind to me and has been gently guiding me to more healthy conflict-resolution tactics, lines of thoughts, and more. I had thought I was happy with my parents, but as time as gone on and as I reflected on my relationship with them I realized how shut down, isolated, and bottled up I was. I feel safe to cry in the arms of my beloved, to express my thoughts, make my own decisions, and to laugh with him too. When he is wrong he is quick to realize it and apologize. When I am feeling insecure his desire is to reassure me. I hope that I do the same for him. If I asked, I'm sure he would say so.
However, even despite all of this, I do miss my parents, my brother, and my sisters greatly. Especially my brother and my sisters. I am sad that I have missed my father's birthday and Mother's Day. I am sad that I will miss my new sibling's birth, and that they will miss my birthday. I want to reconcile with them, but I also want them to respect my decisions and especially respect Babe.
The few times that we have seen each other my father has not looked me in the eye or has barely acknowledged me. I know that it was my decision to move out, but with how quickly things went I feel like I was also kicked out. At first I only felt displaced, but now I also feel disowned. I'm not sure what they're telling people or even entirely what their side of the story is. My brother is still kind to me but our contact over the phone is very minimal. I'm sure that he has been discouraged to speak with me. When we run into each other we get to talk, but that's about it. I know that he is hurt and that he loves me, and I wish that there was more that I could do for him.
I am also scared of what my sisters' reactions will be if I do come back. I'm sure that they feel some level of abandoned, and I know that they have been crying about me because they miss me (via my aunt when she went and visited and ran into me). I don't wish for them to hate me, and I want to be involved, but I also don't want the Babe's vehicle that we share to be identified. If they called the cops on me once, what would stop them from doing it again? My trust for them completely dissipated after that incident, but the worst part of it all is that I didn't get to say goodbye to the girls or to my bonus mom. They had all gone to bed by the time I had come home from work and was finished moving out.
So... what should I do? AITA for trading my family for Babe and a bachelor's degree?
