Staphylococcus aureus bacteria colonizing the body: the unifying agent of acute and chronic disease

2014.09.19 01:24 healthyalmonds Staphylococcus aureus bacteria colonizing the body: the unifying agent of acute and chronic disease

Staphylococcus aureus is a bacteria that can live in the nostrils, ears, mouth, tonsils, and skin. It may cause or be associated with your congestion, swollen lymph nodes, sinus problems, sore throat, eczema, rosacea, acne, cystic pimples, folliculitis, bowel disease, chronic fatigue, diabetes, lupus, weight gain, hair loss, and other diseases. Chlorhexidine, iodine, or Triple Antibiotic Ointment (Neosporin) may stop the Staph infection. See inside for more information.

2024.05.18 11:22 Pure-Following-9447 Assymetrical tonsils and lymphadenopathy

28F. 150lbs. 4 ~ drinks per week. Vape nicotine.
Medications: Zoloft 25mg, Iron 25mg, vitamin D 4000.
December 2023 started experiencing chest/shoulder pain on left side. Had a chest xray, EKG, holter monitor and echocardiogram done. All results normal with diagnosed Bradycardia.
Bloodwork showed just below normal WBC and Lymphocytes. Low Ferratin. Low Vit D. All other results normal. Rheumatoid Factor normal. C Reactive 0.8. Thyroid work up normal. EBV negative.
Dentist also did oral exam and X-rays during this time which showed no concern.
January 2023 I noticed 3 submandibular nodes swollen, 1 cervical node swollen and 1 supraclavicular node swollen. All left side. Ultrasound done on Supraclavicular node indicates it was reactive. I have not been sick since COVID in 2022.
All nodes the size of a bean, soft (other than one hard submandibular), and movable.
April 5 2024 I caught a respiratory illness and I developed a golf ball sized Cervical node which has since gone down. My cold symptoms improved in around a week. Now for the last 2 weeks I’ve had a left submandibular node which seems to be growing slightly each day. I have been palpating it so I don’t know if that’s irritating it more, however it went from the size of a pea to visible on my neck within 3 days.
I checked the back of my throat to see if there’s anything there that could be causing the lymph swelling. It looks like my tonsils are pretty asymetrical and the left one has a weird white spot on it. I also appear to have cobblestone throat that seems inflamed?
My doctor is reluctant to request any further tests at this point, and I’m just looking for reassurance or a second opinion. I’m in Canada so unable to access another doctor as we have such an overburden system and testing is difficult to get as is.

2024.05.18 06:29 spidergirl02 Recently had my first sexual encounter and I am freaking out!

I 22f performed unprotected oral sex on a male on 1st of May (17 days ago). The guy in question is a well sorted individual. I've known him since February. We moved forward with each meeting in terms 'moves', we took one step at a time and discussed everything beforehand. He has performed oral sex on me twice before May 1st and I was fine. On May 1st, I expressed my desire to do the same with him. We discussed doing it with condoms on (I didn't like the idea and neither did he). This led to us discussing his sexual history (I am a virgin). He is bi and has never had sex unprotected. Cool, I give him the BJ. I had to fly back home the next day. 8 days later I have swollen throat. I freak out, I text him. I book an appointment with two doctors both diagnose me with acute tonsillitis the doctor tells me that I am genetically pre-disposed to tonsillitis (which is true, my mom and cousin have to bear this every other year). I tell them about the sexual experience, they say no. The infection clears up after a treatment of antibiotics. The day antibiotics get over, I start itching. There are those spots you see after mosquito bite. Mostly concentrated in palms and soles of the feet. Some on my forearms and thighs. We have decided that he will get tested regardless. But my mind is racing at a million miles per hour. HIV? Chlamydia? Syphilis? I am googling symptoms online and going insane. Otherwise I am fine physically. (P.S. I have hypothyroidism and I am also a chronic overthinker)

2024.05.18 04:23 solstice777444 One swollen tonsil

Growing up I had strep throat almost every year. In 2021, I had tonsillitis for 5 months. They did every test they could for infection but they all came back negative. The ENT i was referred to at the time refused to do a tonsillectomy unless I had 6 different infections in one year. This past month I had tonsillitis again. Luckily it went away with one dose of antibiotics. However, my left tonsil remains extremely swollen and has these circular lumps on it?
Obviously I am going to call my doctor but it’s a long weekend and i’m freaking out here. Please provide any insight you can, thank you

2024.05.18 03:22 Copper05 Enlarged adenoids

I (36F) had reflux symptoms for several months and after talking to my primary I finally just decided to go to an ENT. He checked my throat with the camera and said I had significant acid reflux and put me on meds. He also said that my adenoids were swollen and believes it to be allergies and wants me to get tested for allergens. After I pushed a bit more he also set me up for a CT scan for my peace of mind. To be honest after reading up on enlarged adenoids in adults I’m kind of freaking out because it’s rare in adults and mostly affects children. It says most are caused by allergies and chronic infections in adults but in rare cases it could indicate lymphoma or another tumor. There really isn’t much information out there for this but I did read one article linking GERD to enlarged adenoids. The doctor did repeatedly say he didn’t think I had cancer but was ordering the CT for my peace of mind. I have been sick more than ever with having two toddlers in daycare and having pregnancy rhinitis (my nose was basically clogged all of pregnancy). But I’m still freaking out it’s something more serious. My neck feels possibly swollen but that apparently is a symptom of enlarged adenoids. A lot of my symptoms line up completely with enlarged adenoids and reflux but I’m so terrified the swollen adenoids indicate a more serious problem. I did have my tonsils removed at 20 because they were so large and became enlarged when infected. The primary did also mention that reflux could be caused by anxiety and he could tell I was anxious and might want to take steps to work on it. I’m going to be a nervous wreck until my CT scan next week though and hopefully get normal results. Has anyone else ever dealt with enlarged adenoids? Thanks for taking the time to read this.

2024.05.17 14:22 superherodragon Scared of surgery and unsure

Latent passive chronic tonsilities
Hello everyone,
Had several years of strong acute infections several times a year
Since 6 month
This went away
It's kind of latent infection
Like tonsils are very irritated, mornings and evenings hurt a bit, sometimes my lympfnodes swollen
When I do gym they are irritated it's like when you drink spiced up water, you feel the tonsils.
It's not big pain, but you are always aware.
Now 1 month ago was sick, 2 weeks of tonsil hell, but then puff gone again.
Am confused now, if I should get them removed.
I got a surgery appointment.
The surgeon will try to convince me not to do it, I have been in the hospital now 2 times and canceled another 2 times been going there. They told me all crazy bad things to make me wanna avoid it.
Now I dunno, I could live with this ache, could live with the thought that am too weak and scared for this surgery. Could live with 2 or 4 weeks of hell 2 3 4 times a year... I dunno.
Am scared of the surgery. And I don't know if I should do it.
Am not a serious serious case. But am having 3 years now of several infections, 1,5 years kinda serious hell really strong. It's gotten better, I can. Live again. But this constant throat irritation, feeling the tonsil being irritated, like even scale 2 constant hurt... I dunno if I should accept it for the rest of my life.
Ahhh am confused... 😭

2024.05.17 07:09 CamNewton16 Tonsillectomy

I’m 24 years old, I had my tonsils removed 9 days ago. Everyday has gotten worse, I have a crazy cough and my uvula is so swollen it sits right on my tongue. I’m constantly spitting loads of saliva and even if I’m staying hydrated all day my throat still burns. I sleep barely an hour a night and wake up in crazy pain. Is this normal and where/when does this start to get better. I thought day 9 I’d be starting to see the end of the tunnel

2024.05.17 04:32 NoBowl6903 AITA for calling in sick for 3 days with strep throat, and for telling my boss that his wife has no respect for her coworkers or patients if she’s willing to come to work with strep throat?

On Tuesday I (26F) came down with 103 F fever, body aches and chills, congestion, swollen lymph nodes and tonsils, and sore throat/painful swallowing. I’m a speech pathologist and work in a skilled nursing facility. All of my patients are vulnerable elderly people, or people on ventilators/with tracheostomies, or adults with severe disabilities, who have just stepped down from hospital care.
Tuesday morning I sent my boss (52M) an email about my symptoms and stayed home that day; he replied with only a 👍. Wednesday I woke up and didn’t feel any better after a day of rest and a few doses of NyQuil so I went to urgent care which is where I was diagnosed with strep throat. I was told to stay home a couple more days and take 2 antibiotics. I emailed my boss the doctors note and a brief summary and he immediately called me and the convo went something like this:
Boss: Sadie, you have only worked here for 2 months. Having strep throat is not a reasonable ailment to miss work for 3 days. I will expect to see you in the facility tomorrow morning.
Me: I still have a 102 fever and can barely swallow water without excruciating pain. I am not putting my patients at risk and defying a doctors note.
Boss: It is very unprofessional to miss work in this setting for personal illness and really shows your age. You are completing 1 to 1 sessions with your patients and thus do not have to worry about getting people sick. And if someone were to get sick then wouldn’t it be better for them to get it here where they can receive all the care they need? My wife is an OT and she would never pull this.
Me: Respectfully your wife’s disregard for her patients and coworkers health and wellbeing is not my problem.
Boss: Are you saying my wife doesn’t respect her patients and coworkers because she has a good work ethic?
Me: If she would knowingly come to work with strep throat or such a high fever, then yes that’s what I’m saying.
Boss: Send me an email when you are ready to resume your responsibilities and we will discuss next steps.
Obviously that isn’t an exact transcript, but I’ve been replaying it in my head again and again like an anxious wreck since then.
AITA? Is he right, am I really just being an inexperienced baby about having strep throat and should have powered through work anyway? Regardless I’ve already used this time to respond to 2 recruiters desperate to fill nearby positions. My field is very high in demand so I see no reason to stick around a place like this. I’m trying really hard to understand my boss’s POV, which I perceive as extremely careless and grubby, not to mention unwise considering my position was vacant for 11 months before I was hired b/c there were no applicants…

2024.05.17 01:50 Hentai_withSenpai Throat is in a lot of pain and it’s preventing me from sleep and eating

18F 5’7”160lbs My throat is swollen and it’s really painful to swallow anything. It’s so painful that it interrupts my sleep and my eating.
I was sick recently so it’s most likely a symptom of my cold/feveflu (I’m not sure) and it’s the only thing that has persisted. It’s gotten really bad that I can’t eat food cause it hurts so much to swallow and my mouth is producing a lot of saliva that I have to spit out cause it hurts too bad to swallow. Talking doesn’t hurt that much unless I talk excessively.
My tonsils and tongue look normal: nothing is swollen that I can see and I don’t see white markings. I don’t think I’ve gotten my tonsils removed. Please give me any advice to help with this it’s ruining my life 😭🙏

Hi all
I’ve been having ear pain for around a couple of years id say. I was a frequent smoker these past years but went sober last august. I’ve noticed my left side of the neck is completely hard and painful, and swollen lymphs behind my ear. I’ve also got a white spot on my tonsil that’s quite big, baring in mind I had a papilloma wart removed and sent of for a biopsy previously which was declared benign.
Any thoughts or things you could relate to? Just need a few words of advice. I’m only 21 so pretty scary.
Thanks. 🙏

2024.05.16 21:08 WorkIsDumbSoAmI 34 Male, swollen tender lymph node…how long is too long?

34 Male, had a string of back to back colds/illnesses in April; flu symptoms (unverified), two bouts of food poisoning, sinus infection, and then started May with what I think was strep (red and white patchy throat, painful swallowing, swollen tonsils; did not get tested because my insurance’s covered urgent care is closed on weekends - symptoms started Friday, and I felt good enough to work by Monday, though still not 100%).
It’s been a little over a week since symptoms started - my throat is still a little scratchy, my tonsils are still visibly swollen, but I’m mostly fine. No fever that lasted more than an hour or two, and never above 99 degrees. Suddenly, though, my lymph nodes on only one side of my neck feel really tender and swollen. This has gone on about two or three days with no improvement/worsening - I noticed it and it’s been about the same since I did.
Should I go to urgent care? Is this just a late onset symptom of whatever I’ve got, and I should just continue to stay hydrated, drink tea and rest? Help!

2024.05.16 20:59 LongLoneliness Afraid of peritonsillar abcess

So I (25F) had an unknown virus last week. When I went to the doctor, they tested me for covid and the flu and both were negative, so they chalked it up to some URI. My main symptoms were body aches and headache, chills and night sweats, and then some more mild congestion that came later. I finally felt better after a few days but the congestion and dry cough stuck around. Now, I have one tonsil that is swollen and painful and has white stuff on it. I had a telehealth appointment today and she thought it was viral pharyngitis— but the doctor I saw last week also followed up with me when I asked her about it and she said to watch it, but that if it doesn’t get better in the next few days, it could be a peritonsillar abcess and now I’m really anxious :(

2024.05.16 17:58 mrsFlip2k Sickness for 5 Days

11y old Male, 5ft tall, 82 pounds. My son has been sick since Sunday night. It started on Sunday with congestion and mild sore throat. Tuesday I took him to his pediatrician because he was fatigued, low grade fever, and his throat was more sore. They did a rapid strep test and Covid test and they were both Negative. Yesterday, he slept over 12 hours and his throat was worse and very swollen. His congestion has gotten better. I called his Pediatrician and he put in a round of antibiotics to start him on. He started those last night. Today, the is still fatigued and his throat is still very sore. He said it hurts to chew and open his mouth when I look into his throat. I can’t really see much in his throat other than redness. He had his tonsils removed at age 3. I guess I’m just looking for reassurance because it’s hard seeing him like this. :( Especially when I’m not even sure what he has. Could it still be Strep? Thank you.

2024.05.16 12:50 fabersuzukii Possible STD? Strange symptoms

Hi all, 23f here
This is kind of long but please read it all if you would like to offer your insights
On April 26th I hooked up with a guy after a party. Vibes were right, he was very nice. We talked beforehand and made sure we were both clean. We had protected intercourse and unprotected oral (both ways)
I developed a yeast infection about a week and a half later. Not a big problem. I went to a sexual health clinic on 5/9 for it and the doctor diagnosed me with herpes as well due to swollen lymph nodes at the groin. I think it’s a reach, the ones by my neck were even more swollen and who knows it could’ve been my body fighting off the yeast infection or another STD. I was prescribed topical cream for the yeast and something called Valaciclovir for the possible herpes. The swollen lymph noses on my neck lasted for about 2 days.
I have not had any sores or anything like that. No headache or sensitivity to light. For about 2 nights in a row around 5/11 I had a SLIGHTLY elevated body temperature (can’t be called a fever) for about 30-60 minutes only. That was it. Then after that, a day where I felt fatigued. Then after that, my left tonsil was inflamed all the way down to my chest, but it didn’t hurt much. I talked with my one night stand and he said he was being treated for tonsillitis so I thought, maybe all these symptoms are just tonsillitis?
Nope, no tonsillitis. I woke up with a swollen left tonsil, spent the day with it, and by the time I was ready for bed all the symptoms were gone. And the weird part is , it didn’t hurt to swallow, eat, or drink whatsoever. It only hurt when I moved, such as looking up or down.
I haven’t really felt anything since. I developed oral thrush in my mouth from the yeast infection in my body, so maybe that caused the swollen tonsil? But when I checked my mouth that day, my tonsils looked normal. I’ve been dehydrated for a couple days now due to the oral thrush. That’s it
I also discussed this with the guy and based on past STD test results I can rule out the following: HIV, Syphilis, Gonorrhea. HIV is 0% chance
Could be herpes or mono. Or nothing. I can’t get tested until 3 months when all my (hypothetical) antibodies will be ready. Insights and advice welcome but please be nice. Questions welcome

2024.05.16 06:04 Interesting-Tomato89 Adult tonsillectomy

Figured I’d do a review on getting my extremely large swollen tonsils out after years of constant strept throat.
1.absolutely most painful thing I’ve ever been through
  1. Eating unlimited ice cream and skakes is a myth. Actually avoid any type of dairy possible.
  2. What you hear about the first three days being the worst is false every single day up until 10 are extremely painful.
  3. You are lucky to get 2 hours of sleep in at a time once pain meds ware off your awake and if you take as prescribed you have about a 2 hour wait of excruciating pain
5.staying hydrated first three days or so is easy. It’s day 5-8 where you can barely swallow water I survived off little ice balls
  1. Don’t plan on eating anything after day 3 until in my experience day 10 so far it has been an absolute nightmare trying to to eat anything some days I’m able to painfully eat one pancake or pastene

2024.05.16 02:59 Jr-Wldn-Expl-54 I have had strep throat for nearly 6 months, despite multiple antibiotics. Do I have a weak immune system?

Age: 19
Sex: female (trans man)
Height: 5’ 5”
Weight: 160 lbs
Race: African American, white
Duration of complaint: 6 months
Location: tonsils, throat
Current medications: testosterone, finasteride, kyleena IUD
I am scheduled for a tonsillectomy in August after finding out last week that I’ve had strep throat since January. I have been through five rounds of antibiotics, none of which have cleared up my swollen tonsils and sore throat. I was finally able to see an ENT who sent a culture to lab (results were an uncommon strain of strep). I’m now on a 14 day round of Ceflex, but I’m wondering, does having a bacterial infection for so long do permanent damage to any of my organs? Does it mean that I have a weak immune system if my body could not naturally clear the infection?

2024.05.15 05:57 National-World-2737 Lump on neck swells up and down

23F, occasional marijuana user, no known health issues, takes 50 mg spironolactone for off label tx of acne
So for the last several months to a year or two I have had an area on my neck that swells and goes down periodically. It is located slightly right to the midline of my neck just in the area where my chin meets my neck, maybe near the hyoid bone. I would consider this between submental and submandibular region. When the area swells I can feel my neck quite swollen in this area and that side feels slightly uncomfortable when I swallow on that side. My tonsils are still present but not visually enlarged. The lump is not always present and I cannot seem to connect a trend with it. It comes and goes. It is a hard immovable lump that is not seen visually but can be felt. I had it looked at once last fall when it swelled up by an NP at urgent care. The diagnosis was a swollen parotid gland, however this area is no where near the parotid. I had an ultrasound as well but the results were normal. The lump has returned and I just feel very uneasy about it and have tried researching other possibilities it could be but am stumped. I realize no one can give me a diagnosis, but does anyone have ideas I can look into and perhaps discuss with my doctor? Thank you

2024.05.15 04:02 CasualRSL I just spent 6 days in the hospital for mystery parasthesia and pain. Is it actually just guillaine-barre syndrome?

Hello! I am a 28 year old male. I just spent 6 days admitted to the hospital with concerns about a cardiac event because I was having facial parasthesia (tingling, numbness), the same sensation in my left arm and to a less frequent extent, my right arm. I also experience lower jaw and tooth pain, but I can’t tell if this is a symptom or if it is secondary to the swollen tonsils and adenoids.
For context, my wife and son recently got sick. My wife was very sick. Enough so that she sometimes cried about how much her throat hurt and even got a couple of chest x-rays for pneumonia. She was tested for every common illness because she had an insanely painful sore throat, a VERY bad cough, a whisper quiet lost voice and her tonsils were huge. The only result that showed was that she had a past EBV infection at some point.
I also got sick, of course. However, things went differently for me. I got sick and developed a bad sorrow throat and that was about it. This continues to this day, which is 12 days later. It’s still quite bad. My tonsils are also huge, but not as big as they were. I have tonsil secretions but I had more before.
A few days into my sore throat, my left face began to tingle. It was… weird. No pain, nothing else really. Just tingle. Later on in the day, my lip went numb. I went to the ER thinking that I was stroking out or something but the CT was fine and they sent me home.
The very next day, my left arm started to tingle and hurt and my arm starting from under my armpit medially(if supinated) running down my upper arm but not below my elbow started to ache. My shoulder had sensations of cold as well. The tinglng sensation continues and it runs down to my hand where I feel pain that that travels around but is mainly in my palm, thumb and fourth/fifth finger. This also occurs in my right arm. In fact, it’s happening right now. Both sides of my face are tingling as well.
To be clear, Yale’s cardiology team did a very extensive workup including s PET/CT nuclear stress test, echocardiogram, several EKG’s, maybe a dozen troponins a chest X-ray. No cardiac pathology was revealed. The only thing that was somewhat weird is that my symptoms were alleviated several times by nitroglycerin, but this may very well be psychosomatic due to my extreme anxiety over it being cardiac in nature and causing panjc attacks that the nitroglycerin calmed by lowering my BP and distracting me with low BP symptoms, honestly. I am a very anxious individual and I was very laser focused on it being cardiac pain because of the location. So much so that I did not even think of the possibility of my illness being related during my hospitalization. They did test me for strep and COVID and it was negative but given the fact that my wife was negative for EBV, they did not think it necessary.
I am wondering if perhaps this mystery infection could have triggered GBS? I do see a neurologist but my closest available appointment is three months from now.
So, what do you fine people think? Do these symptoms sound like potential GBS? If so, would gabapentin help? How can I go about making this easier for myself? I do have an RX for that. Thanks for reading.

2024.05.15 03:15 Dinwinning Tonsillitis for 3 weeks

Hi guys, I’m a 23M that has been diagnosed with a probable virus after seemingly having tonsillitis. I’ve tested negative to everything - strep, STI’s, mono, influenza, covid etc. anything that can be swabbed or blood tested. All 4 doctors have no clue. I’ve been prescribed erythromycin (taking it for acne beforehand so doubled dose) for 6 days when there was white puss/infection coming from only right tonsil, then penicillin with erythromycin for 10 days after puss went away but still sore to swallow and swollen. Weird thing is halfway through the penicillin it flared up again, having around 5 tiny white dots appear predominantly on the inflamed right tonsil for a couple days. This was accompanied with swelling that made the tonsil protrude towards the uvula too. Whilst it’s settling down again after 4 days of dots, I still have swelling 3 weeks later. My main concern is the anatomy of my right tonsil because where the puss was coming from in the slit is healing so slowly and it’s like my tonsil has a little dangly thing/uvula of it’s own now lol. Could it be a stubborn tonsil stone or something causing the protrusion? Never had my tonsil look like this. I’ve poked around with a q-tip and it actually tucked in the dangly thing a little, with no clear stones or anything behind it or the tonsil flaps.
Current symptoms are barely any throat pain when swallowing, swelling and inflammation of right tonsil and moderate lymph nodes in neck, chronic fatigue, no fever, sporadic body aches and pains.
I’m lost because I’ve never been sick for this long for a respiratory issue and feel something’s not right.

2024.05.15 00:15 Potential-Knee-9297 20M Tonsillectomy Day 2 Post-Op

My continuous pain was around 2/10 today and whilst swallowing it is 5/10, overall a better day than day 1. I’m taking paracetamol 3 times a day, today I was sent back home after an uncomfortable but bearable night in the hospital. Overall day 2 was very okay, all posts indicate that it will get worse over the next few days which I am prepared for (my doctor gave me 2 sets of painkillers, if it gets worse I will start taking the second kind as well). I ate and drank a lot today, no ear pain or fever was present. However my uvula is significantly swollen, it literally touches my tongue. Also in the videos I watched, the hole the tonsil would leave behind would fully turn white. In my case only some parts are white others are red, my doctor said removing my tonsils were hard due to the tonsil capsule being almost gone (my tonsils were practically useless he said), therefore he had to strip the tonsils from muscles as well. Is this and my uvula being this swollen normal? Thanks in advance
