2024.05.18 12:18 darcot Dreams

One of the most fascinating and poorly understood aspects of human life is also one of the most common. In fact, every single human has this experience every single night, whether they remember it or not. This is the phenomena of dreaming.
There is lively debate surrounding the purpose and ontology of dreams in mainstream thinking. From the perspective of the scientific materialistic paradigm, dreams are nothing more than random “noise” that is created by the meaningless firing of neurons during sleep. Materialists credit dreams with no inherent meaning or significance beyond nondeterministic processes. To many modern psychologists, dreams are seen as a reflection of our subconscious mind and can provide valuable insights into our emotions, thoughts, and experiences. Additionally, dreams are understood to play a key role in memory consolidation, problem-solving, emotional regulation, and are recognized as critical to mental health in general. While debate rages regarding the meaning and utility of dreams, only Illuminism is able to fully explain both the meaning and ontology of dreams - analyses that are, of course, fully compatible and consistent with Ontological Mathematics.
Why is it that the world we experience in dreams so closely resemble the world we experience when awake? What relationship do dreams have with waking reality? What role does the unconscious mind play in dreaming? What role does the conscious mind play in dreaming? What does the existence of dreams imply about the existence of the so-called material universe? To begin exploring the nature of dreams, let’s look at the following quote by Mike Hockney:
“The difference between a dream physical world and the waking physical world is not a difference between something “real” and something “unreal”, but the difference between a physical world created by an individual mind versus a physical world created by all minds. The so-called physical world of science is simply the mental construct of the collective Mind rather than of the individual mind.”
This quote has some incredible implications for the nature of the universe. In Illuminism and Ontological Mathematics, the physical universe we experience while awake has no existence separate from mind. Mind exists as a singularity - a frequency domain outside of space and time. As discussed in a previous post, the material universe is an inverse Fourier Transform of the information (or thoughts) produced collectively by all minds. While awake, we tune into the arena constructed collectively by all monads. Every mind in existence contributes to the stability of this arena and its features (such as the laws of physics), which is why the laws of the universe are objective - where individuals cannot influence them at will. We can understand this as a result of every mind resisting the influence of any other mind! While asleep, we turn inwards to a world created only by our own mind. Because the world of our dreams and its laws are informed only by our individual mind, they are much more flexible and susceptible to change than those of the waking world. In a dream, you simply need to will a change to influence the mathematics structuring the dream because you are the only one creating it! While the waking and sleeping worlds seem to be substantially different, the process which they are created by is exactly the same. The only difference between the two is the latter is a private individual world and the former is collective and public.
Jack Tanner described a great way to understand this concept in a recent Patreon post by instructing us to imagine an individual having a dream. It is fully created and maintained by the dreamer. What happens if we then add a second dreamer? Both contribute to the dream and must cooperate in order to make any significant changes (or one person would need to dominate the other). Now imagine adding a third, then fourth, and on and on until myriad minds populate this dream world. What would you finally arrive at? Literally the waking “material” world!
As Mike Hockney said, “That’s why our public dreams (normal lives) are so different from our private dreams (our subjective fantasy space, devoid of objective laws)… There’s no such thing as a physical world independent of minds. It’s impossible. Physical worlds – whether dream worlds or the waking world – are mental projections. Dream worlds have no collective, objective mathematical rules whereas the waking world does. That’s the only difference. We never at any time inhabit an authentic material world (in itself, in its own independent right). At all times, we inhabit mentally constructed material worlds – Matrix worlds!”
Imagine you had to create a dream from scratch. What would you do? Build a world and fill it with fictional characters? What is a world? How would you set up convincing characters in the world? And in the mental void preceding a dream, what tools would you even have to build with? For the conscious mind, this is an impossible challenge. For the unconscious, it’s trivial. Think of the unconscious as a “second mind” as said by Jack Tanner, working in concert with the conscious mind to navigate in the world. You can think of this second mind as “the production mind” - a mind with significantly more power than the conscious mind, which is able to produce anything in existence, but lacking any guiding internal compass. In contrast to the unconscious, the conscious mind has very clear discernment and understands where it wants to go (and a rough idea of how to get there) but tragically has almost zero power to implement its plans.
When the two act cooperatively, conscious can make use of the unconscious by making suggestions of the type of things the unconscious should do/produce. The unconscious is doing myriad things that the consciousness is not in control of in any way - or even aware of - like keeping the body alive, collecting data from the world, moving the body, acting reflexively and instinctually, etc, but it is also presenting information and proposing ideas to consciousness. This is the content that consciousness can influence. Whenever the unconscious presents consciousness with a thought, consciousness reacts to it in one way or another. The most straight forward response that consciousness gives is pleasure (give me more of that kind of content) and pain (stop showing me that sort of content).
A key to understanding this dynamic is that, for as long as you are alive (and potentially after!) it NEVER stops. When you are awake, your unconscious mind is drawing your attention to this or that, posing streams of thought that you can think about the things you observe. Consciousness continually fine tunes these prompts from the unconscious until it reaches a state where the conscious no longer demands better (subjectively) from the unconscious. When we go to sleep, this does not end. The only thing that changes is the unconscious stops serving us so much external data, and instead focuses on presenting content that is produced internally. What’s more, the unconscious has learned exactly what content will push the buttons of consciousness - because a primary part of what consciousness does is to tell the unconscious exactly how. The unconscious has been primed to put on the most engaging shows imaginable for consciousness at night - literally!
An interesting question that results from this dynamic is if we are ever NOT being presented with internally produced (dream) content. As we awake, the unconscious shifts from a focus on presenting internal content back to that of the external world, but to what degree is the internal content truly suppressed? Can we ever be sure that we are not dreaming in a non-trivial way all the time? Are daydreams when internal content supersedes external while awake? How can we truly separate what content comes from within and what is truly objective and external?
Harry Knox described the relationship between consciousness and the unconscious with the following: “Consciousness is an evolution of the unconscious mind. Consciousness is language-based, conceptual unconsciousness! The unconscious deals in a) the wordless mathematical language and b) in wordless symbols, signs, icons, images and feelings (as in dreams). Words ultimately define consciousness because words, and how they are arranged, allow the construction and linking of concepts in a way that is tied to our emotions, desires and Will.”
In reality, dreams are projections of the unconscious that our conscious mind gets to watch and experience. While awake, our conscious (left hemispheric) mind is dominant, leaving the unconscious right hemisphere playing the supporting role. When we sleep, these roles are reversed and the consciousness must (generally speaking) sit back and try to enjoy the movie - even if it’s a horror film (nightmare)! This attribute of the bicameral structure of the human mind was discussed in more detail in an earlier post on Bicameralism. It is potentially the case that during the transition from ancient bicameralism to the modern mode of consciousness there was a period where the hemispheres were more evenly balanced and it was impossible to distinguish between internal (dream) and external (waking) content! Is this why our ancestors seemed to be so much more in touch with the supernatural and the religious? Could they have been literally experiencing these attributes of non-locality on a daily basis? Did the progression to our current mode of consciousness leave humanity with the impression of being abandoned by the gods? Could this be the reason behind the nature of mainstream religion today?
There you have it! When you fully understand dreams you will see that they are, in fact, proof of the reality of a universe based on mind (monads)!
Stay tuned as we will continue our discussion on dreams in consideration of the phenomena of lucid dreams.

2024.05.18 12:16 -A_M_R- I have doubts.

(Mods, please do not delete this. I am truly in need for help and not in any means trying to troll or disrespect anyone.)
Hello everyone!
This going to be a long read and I hope that you will read it all in order to help me clarify my doubts and correct me if I misunderstood some concepts here.
First of all, I am from an Islamic country. I was born Muslim and I am (still) a Muslim.
Before you begin reading, I want to clarify that I am NOT a troll or just someone trying to waste your time. I am a Muslim in doubt and in desperate search for answers. I am expecting serious answers from people who know much more than I do and who can backup their claims/arguments with valid and truthful sources. I really hope I can find answers and clarifications to the things I am going to list below because this is going to define the future of my beliefs and decide if I will remain a Muslim with a stronger faith than ever, or not.
Now, about the main topic of this post:
In the recent weeks, I started having doubts about Islam, my mind is getting filled with questions that I can't seem to find the answers to and wish to get answers to all of them. I always had doubts in my life but I always found answers to them because my doubts were kind of idiotic and not as "big". This post is going to have titles/sections about each question with its source from the Quran, my view about it and what is bothering me.

First Point: How Did Satan (Iblis) Refuse to Prostrate to Adam while He Was in Heaven?

From the Quran (Surat Al Hijr):
So the angels prostrated all together—
but not Iblîs, who refused to prostrate with the others.
Allah asked, “O Iblîs! What is the matter with you that you did not join others in prostration?”
He replied, “It is not for me to prostrate to a human You created from sounding clay moulded from black mud.”
Allah commanded, “Then get out of Paradise, for you are truly cursed.
And surely upon you is condemnation until the Day of Judgment.”
According to Islam, Heaven is a place where hearts are full of purity, blessings and happiness with no hate and no negativity whatsoever. And from the verse above, Satan refused to prostrate when Allah (SWT) ordered him to. Where did this hate and arrogance come from if Heaven is pure? Iblis considered himself superior to Adam and that is something that should not be possible in Heaven.

Second Point: How Did Satan Whisper to Adam in Heaven?

We all know that Satan whispered to Adam in Heaven and here is the source from the Quran (Surat Al-A'Raf):
˹Allah said,˺ “O Adam! Live with your wife in Paradise and eat from wherever you please, but do not approach this tree, or else you will be wrongdoers.”
Then Satan tempted them in order to expose what was hidden of their nakedness. He said, “Your Lord has forbidden this tree to you only to prevent you from becoming angels or immortals.”
And he swore to them, “I am truly your sincere advisor.”
So he brought about their fall through deception. And when they tasted of the tree, their nakedness was exposed to them, prompting them to cover themselves with leaves from Paradise. Then their Lord called out to them, “Did I not forbid you from that tree and ˹did I not˺ tell you that Satan is your sworn enemy?”
What is bothering me here and making me wonder so much is how was Satan able to "trick" Adam and his wife into eating the fruit if Adam and his wife were in Heaven while Satan got expelled from it? How did Satan communicate with them?

Third Point: Marrying Non-Muslims

In Surat Al-Baqarah it says:
Do not marry polytheistic women until they believe; for a believing slave-woman is better than a free polytheist, even though she may look pleasant to you. And do not marry your women to polytheistic men until they believe, for a believing slave-man is better than a free polytheist, even though he may look pleasant to you. They invite ˹you˺ to the Fire while Allah invites ˹you˺ to Paradise and forgiveness by His grace. He makes His revelations clear to the people so perhaps they will be mindful.
The order is clear here: Do NOT marry polytheistic women and men.
In Surat Al-Ma'idah it says:
Today all good, pure foods have been made lawful for you. Similarly, the food of the People of the Book is permissible for you and yours is permissible for them. And ˹permissible for you in marriage˺ are chaste believing women as well as chaste women of those given the Scripture before you—as long as you pay them their dowries in wedlock, neither fornicating nor taking them as mistresses. And whoever rejects the faith, all their good deeds will be void ˹in this life˺ and in the Hereafter they will be among the losers.
Here, it clearly says that Muslim men are allowed to marry chaste women (from the people of the book). Which means women that are not Muslim, but pure women from other religions (Christianity, Judaism).
So those people of the book, and more precisely those chaste women, are pure but still don't believe in Islam and the Quran which makes them non believers (Kafirun) even though Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) came with the message of Islam that is the true on only religion.
So Muslim men are allowed to marry those chaste women (even though they are not Muslim and they assign partners to Allah (SWT) which makes them polytheists or Mushrikun) according to the Ayah in Surat Al-Ma'idah, but Muslims were clearly ordered NOT to marry non believers and polytheists in Surat Al-Baqarah.

Fourth Point: Misunderstandings in Islam

Islam is a very clear religion with a clear book according to Surat Al-Ma'idah:
O People of the Book! Now Our Messenger has come to you, revealing much of what you have hidden of the Scriptures and disregarding much. There certainly has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book
If Islam and the Quran are clear and can't be misunderstood, then why there are many branches (Sunni, Shia, Ibadi, Kharijite)? Why there are so many disagreements between Sunni Muslims and Shia Muslims? Aren't Muslims supposed to be brothers and one Ummah. How are there different interpretations of Islam between these branches?
This is all I can recall at the moment. I hope I get serious answers with clear proof.
Thank you for reading!

2024.05.18 11:32 JJJJJJJam I'm not very sound on some doctrinal issues and I would like an honest opinion on my current walk with Christ.

Before I begin, I have always struggled with spelling and grammar so please be kind and forgiving on this point. My spellcheck extension has quit working and I don't want that to stop from talking about some things that have been weighing me down for some time.
I hope this lands well. I want to start off by professing that I am a believing Christian. I believe fully in the doctrines of the trinity. I believe in the virgin birth of our Saviour, his death for our sins, and his resurrection and glorification. I believe that scripture is the complete and preserved authentic word of God. My issue is I've never been sold enough to say "I'm a devout [Insert Denomination here] Usually I tell people that I am a very sincere protestant and I leave it at that.
I do a lot of outreach for the gospel. As much as I can with what I have been given in life. I feel like this unshaky feeling I get around certain theological topics may be hindering me in some way. I just had a 4-5 hour discussion with someone who was on the fence about their coming to the faith and I noticed during that conversation there were a lot of "I'm not sure about x, y, or z. You will have to find someone else who feels more confident to give you a definative answer."
I want to talk to you about the more serious ones and move down the list.
The 5 solas. I am 99% sure that they are correct. I feel that scripture backs up my view and I find the arguments against them sort of ridiculous. The stumbling block for me is that there are people who are just as confident that the RCC is correct that my beliefs are heretical teachings. I do occasionally have that glimmer of doubt. "What if the RCC or Orth traditions are right? What if I'm wrong and I've been leading people astray?" I can back up my beliefs in scripture but the RCC says that I cannot. There are many true believing catholics that I know some who appear to love the living God as much as I do and want to "help" me come to the true faith as much as I want to help them. I can't get over that 1%. It keeps me up at night.
Baptism. I don't know what I feel about this. I've examined every argument surrounding it and the supporting scriptures for and against regarding what it means, what it does, and so on. I feel like a person should 100% be baptised because we were told to be baptised. What I don't know is if that bapbtism is salvific in any way. I also cannot say for certain if infant babptism should be accepted or not. Generally my answer for questions around this are, "You should be bapbtised" and I drop the conversation there. I remain on the fence regarding the finer points.
Regarding Communion. See the above. Almost word for word. I feel like it is very important. I cannot comment on whether it is salvific or not. I cannot comment on if it is symbolic. I cannot comment on any other things with certainy because I have not been convinced by arguments regarding it.
And here we are on what I "think" are the less important things. (Notice I am not sure if these are important or not lol)
I feel like TULIP is mostly correct. My problem is that I'm not sure on how correct it is. I understand the arguments and remain convinced regarding God knowing us before the foundations of the world. I understand it is absolutely impossible to avoid election without removing parts of scripture. I guess what confuses me about it is that there appears to be some level of free will that I cannot explain.
Premil vs Amil. I don't even know if this is important at all. I probably stand on a premil view as I feel that is what scripture dictates.
My potential heretical belief according to many.
I feel like there is an extreme difference between making God into a personalized Idol and being on the fence about what is and is not true regarding doctrine and His majesty. For people on the fence, I generally tell them that they need to make an honest and sincere effort to get to the truth. I tell them this because I feel that this is the only way to come to Christ. What I don't tell them is that I genuinely don't think a person will be condemned for finding themselves in the wrong church as long as it professes the core truth surrounding the trinity, the deity of Christ, and our need for Him both in our living bodies and for our salvation. I also warn people about unitarian churches, churches with additions/personal bibles, and cults. Hopefully I covered all of my bases. . .
I guess what I would like is some sort of assesment on where I stand. What I should do if there is anything I should do. Thank you for your time.

2024.05.18 11:08 pmmod How bad is it to store data as a single JSON instead of multiple rows & tables?

TL;DR
I am using a single JSON object field to store data that I would normally store in 4 different tables in a traditional relational database. Will I regret this decision in the long run?
I am using Supabase as the backend for my app. I am still in the MVP phase, but I decided to publish the app in open testing on Google Play and am in the process of gathering beta testers. In the prototyping phase, to move faster, I decided to put users’ progress-related data in a single JSON-type field. This was a new type of data for me, as in the past I mainly used MySQL/SQLite as a database.
So, now I have a data structure in a single JSON object that I would normally have in 4 different tables, like:
This is how the JSON object looks like:
json { "courseId": "string", "created_at": "string or null", "updated_at": "string", "sectionProgress": [ { "id": "string", "isUnlocked": "boolean or null", "percentage": "number" } ], "lessonProgress": [ { "id": "string", "percentage": "number", "createdAt": "string or null", "updatedAt": "string or null", "pointsGained": { "timestamp": "number" } } ] }
And this is the data structure I would have in a traditional relational database:
  1. Courses Table
    • course_id
    • created_at
    • updated_at
  2. SectionProgress Table
    • id
    • courseId
    • isUnlocked
    • percentage
  3. LessonProgress Table
    • etc.
  4. PointsGained Table
    • etc.
I figured I’d launch the app like this and set up the database structure properly after and if the app got some traction and the idea got validated.
So far, it works like a charm. I also find it extremely convenient to work with. However, I was wondering if this approach could have any disadvantages that I need to watch out for?
My thinking: 1. If the data were split into multiple tables and multiple fields, I’d still need to do some joins to avoid multiple calls to the backend, so I don’t think there should be any performance advantages. 2. While this object can grow rather large, it’s essentially the same amount of data that needs to be served to the clients; it’s just stored in a single field.
The disadvantages: 1. No data type validation: The structure of the JSON object is defined by the clients, so I have to be careful to use the same interface across all different clients. This could be a bigger concern when working in a team. 2. Data analysis: Since the data is in a single field, I assume it’s more complicated to use SQL queries to create some basic reports.
I feel like I can definitely live with both disadvantages for quite some time.
My question: Do I miss any other disadvantages that would haunt me later? I feel like if I need to migrate from a JSON object to the new data structure, I’d rather do it now with a handful of users and limited functionality than later when (or if) I have significantly more users and features to support.
Thanks in advance for any input!
Some additional context about the app:
I am making a Duolingo-like educational app but for Product Managers. It aims to prepare aspiring PMs for job interviews and to help PMs learn in a structured and fun way. The core functionality is quite similar to Duolingo: users are presented with small reading materials and then different types of interactive lessons connected to the theory. The user can pass or fail a lesson and collect points based on the number of correct answers. The user can also maintain a streak by collecting points, and much more. The learning material is organized in sections, so the user completes the sections by completing the related lessons.
(Btw, if you are interested and would like to give it a spin, it’s free to download on productme.org - I appreciate any kind of feedback!)
The users’ progress data is cached locally and synchronized with Supabase whenever the app is opened or the user finishes a lesson. The app can also be used without an account; in this case, the data won’t be synchronized. (I am not creating “anonymous users” or something magical like that.)
It’s also planned to have multiple courses in the future, but for now, until the idea is validated, I only have one “Product Management Foundations” course.

2024.05.18 10:07 spunchy M&B 2024 Lecture 1: The Four Prices of Money

M&B 2024 Lecture 1: The Four Prices of Money
For our schedule and links to other discussions, see the Money and Banking 2024 master post.
This is the discussion thread for Economics of Money and Banking Lecture 1: The Four Prices of Money.
This lecture provides context for the course and introduces us to Perry Mehrling's "Money View" framework. We practice using the balance sheet (T-account) as an analytical tool to help us understand the machinery of money, banking, and finance.
NOTE: The videos in this lecture have been arranged out of chronological order, so Mehrling sometimes refers back to something he hasn't talked about yet.

Part 1: The Big Picture

This course represents a challenge to Fischer Black's assertion we don't need a theory of money separate from the theory of finance. Black abstracts away from liquidity by assuming that perfect liquidity is free and happens automatically. By contrast, Mehrling insists that central banks have a role in managing the liquidity problems that financial markets naturally encounter.
Grounded in permanent, uncontroversial features of money, the Money View framework provides an ideologically neutral language and toolkit for discussing and analyzing money. Globalization, technology, and the forces of politics continually reshape the monetary landscape. But the underlying nature of money and banking remains constant.
We start with the question of financial globalization. In the decade-plus since he delivered these lectures, Mehrling has further integrated the international monetary system into his Money View. His 2022 book, Money and Empire: Charles P. Kindleberger and the Dollar System tells the story of how the US dollar found itself at the center of that system.
Global money has its own terminology. In particular, the term capital flow describes any cross-border flow of money not associated with the purchase or sale of goods and services. Whenever they happen to cross national borders, lending, borrowing, and the purchase and sale of financial assets, all represent capital flows. When I borrow abroad or sell financial assets, money flows toward me. That's a capital inflow. When I lend abroad or buy financial assets, that's a capital outflow.
In the lecture, Mehrling shares a list of his intellectual predecessors in the American and UK Banking traditions. Notably, he leaves off John Hicks, whose ideas, especially from his 1989 book "A Market Theory of Money," are central to the intellectual development of the Money View. We will discuss a few chapters from that book in the coming weeks.

Part 2: Prerequisites?

This course doesn't use much math. And you don't need an economics background to get something out of the material. If you're familiar with other ways of thinking about money and banking (and finance), these lectures will eventually connect up with those perspectives.
Instead of using conventional approaches for teaching Money and Banking by first applying theory, Mehrling builds out his Money View framework from an examination of banking practice. What model of the world do bankers need to have in their heads in order to stay in business?

Part 3: What is a Bank, a Shadow Bank, A Central Bank?

Here is the stylized balance sheet of a prototypical bank.
https://preview.redd.it/gt7d8qk8651d1.png?width=281&format=png&auto=webp&s=deadb0e839c3fe7d8617d8216071a21e64ffc1a1
Assets are always on the left side of the balance sheet, and liabilities are always on the right. The difference in value between assets and liabilities is net worth. Unlike other entries on the liability side of the balance sheet, net worth doesn't represent a commitment to pay a specific amount of money. Instead, we can think of net worth as an IOU to the bank owners for what's left over after all the bank's debts have been paid.
On the asset side of its balance sheet, the bank keeps a reserve of money available to settle immediate payment obligations. This reserve is monetary liquidity. As long as the bank has reserves it can spend down (0 < Reserves), it can meet its payment obligations. The bank is liquid. Without reserves, the bank would always have to receive money at the exact instant it needs to pay it out.
We will often use the terms money and cash to refer to the settlement instrument—that which can be spent directly to settle payment commitments. The settlement instrument will only ever appear on a balance sheet as an asset. The same instrument that serves as money for one entity may appear as a liability on the balance sheet of another entity, the issuer, but it is not money to the issuer. It is credit.
The term reserves refers to any reserve of money held as an asset. Above, I have emphasized the bank's reserves by italicizing and bolding the balance-sheet entry. I will follow the convention throughout the course of highlighting money as the settlement instrument.
Assets other than cash (money) represent promised or expected cash inflows. Liabilities represent commitments for future cash outflows. The balance-sheet structure alone does not describe the time pattern of these cash flows. Nor does it tell us about market liquidity, funding liquidity, or even the regulatory constraints on reserves. It is hard to see liquidity by looking at a balance sheet alone.
A balance sheet is solvent if its net worth—assets less liabilities—is greater than zero. However, there is no single correct way to determine the price of assets. Should we add up the total promised cash flows implied by the assets? Should we discount those cash flows based on how far into the future they occur? Should we weight them based on risk of default? When should we ignore all that and mark to market? That is, when does it make the most sense to value assets based on the price we could sell them for right now?
Solvency is often a matter of appearance, whereas liquidity imposes an actual constraint. If you can't make a payment, you're dead. Continued operation depends on liquidity, not solvency.
Let's look at two side-by-side balance sheets to see what happens when someone deposits cash in a bank.
https://preview.redd.it/nzakihfc651d1.png?width=780&format=png&auto=webp&s=430587d285c5bb0eeae1036e0b706bcc3455d353
On these balance sheets, "cash" refers to coins and notes—the physical currency you might keep in your wallet. For the depositor, both cash and bank deposits are money. For the bank, only the cash is money.
We can also show this transaction using payment arrows.
https://preview.redd.it/ybyopq6e651d1.png?width=338&format=png&auto=webp&s=c377ad6ccb9a8ec7c0bd897c4fd915dd220eafbd
Following Borja Clavero's color-coding convention, I've shaded the creation of deposits green to denote payment by issuance. I've shaded the transfer of cash yellow to denote payment by assignment.
In this transaction, the bank issues new deposits to buy cash from the depositor. The cash moves from the depositor to the bank. In terms of quadruple-entry accounting, we call it an asset intermediation because the depositor ends up holding an IOU for cash instead of the cash itself.
When the central bank issues new money, it expands its balance sheet on both sides, just like a private commercial bank.
https://preview.redd.it/uzljjhth651d1.png?width=795&format=png&auto=webp&s=97ab3698ea4ab6436c8968690f3683ed3eef4d93
The central bank is a bank. It's just not correct to say that the central bank is printing money. It's expanding both sides of the balance sheet at the same time. —Lecture
On these balance sheets, the word "reserves" refers to the deposit liabilities of the central bank. We call them reserves because the private banking sector uses these central bank deposits as its settlement reserve.
The term "reserves" can mean at least two different things:
  1. Monetary assets held to meet immediate payment obligations.
  2. The deposits a commercial bank has on account at the central bank.
The balance sheet mechanics here are identical to when a commercial bank takes a cash deposit. Just as the commercial bank issues deposits to buy cash, the central bank issues reserves to buy Treasuries.
But there are a few key differences not captured by the balance sheets:
  1. The central bank has replaced a non-monetary asset (Treasuries) with money (reserves).
  2. The price of Treasuries can move relative to reserves.
  3. The central bank is not passively standing ready to redeem reserves for Treasuries.
The central bank is, however, standing ready to redeem reserves for cash (and vice-versa). Just like reserves, cash is another liability of the central bank. Banks can decide which form of central-bank liabilities they want to hold as reserve assets. It can be any mix of cash and reserve deposits.
https://preview.redd.it/u710uojk651d1.png?width=822&format=png&auto=webp&s=87c659964567bcbdfaa22cabb7868bc678946749
The payment of cash to the central bank is shaded red to denote payment by set-off. The reserve issuance is, again, payment by issuance. These two payments, taken together as a transaction, constitute a refinance operation. The commercial bank shifts the form of its money reserve from one central-bank liability to another.
https://preview.redd.it/pcf3416m651d1.png?width=338&format=png&auto=webp&s=245d783727a0cb78558fbfcf130cd84bc1d58bb9
A shadow bank is like a bank, but its assets and liabilities are both market-based instruments. It borrows from the market and lends to the market.
Shadow banking is money-market funding of capital-market lending. —Perry Mehrling
The money market is the market for very short-term borrowing, often overnight. A borrower can use the money market in two different ways.
  1. To cover a temporary payments deficit.
  2. To fund a long-term position by continually rolling over (renewing) money-market borrowing.
Shadow banking uses the money market for the latter.
The capital market is the market for trading long-term securities such as stocks and bonds.
https://preview.redd.it/stlwdwtp651d1.png?width=553&format=png&auto=webp&s=3a982e14f6c92eea2f657ebe10f31cebd3da7029
Notice that there is no money (cash reserve) on the balance sheet of this stylized shadow bank. In real life, shadow banking occurs on the balance sheets of entities that do have some kind of cash reserve. But for the shadow banking activity itself, liquidity is less about cash reserves and more about the ability to roll over short-term money-market funding. Traditional banking leans more on monetary liquidity (reserve assets), but both types of banking rely heavily on funding liquidity and market liquidity.

Part 4: Central Themes?

Two key ideas:
  1. Banking as a payment system
  2. Banking as market making
The payment system requires liquidity. If you're not liquid, you can't make payments. And liquidity comes from market-making dealers.
Mehrling has a 2015 blog post, Why is money difficult?, that describes some of the motivation for explaining money. It covers some of the same ground as Warsaw Lecture 1.
In my teaching, I have come to appreciate a variety of barriers that people bring with them to the study of money, and to appreciate the necessity of bringing these barriers up to consciousness as part of the process of learning. —Perry Mehrling, Why is money difficult?
We can summarize the "alchemy of banking" as:
All banking is a swap of IOUs. —Perry Mehrling
Depending on how we define "banking" and "swap of IOUs," the above statement might be true or not. For example, one might reasonably suggest that simply taking cash deposits is a "banking activity" that does not constitute a "swap of IOUs."
Nevertheless, "swap of IOUs" captures something important about banking. Banks predominately lend through a mutual obligation with borrowers.
https://preview.redd.it/f9ck1bmu651d1.png?width=338&format=png&auto=webp&s=e5184582513346893e3f243ac2c313f190899d42
Both the bank and the borrower expand their balance sheet on both sides.
https://preview.redd.it/sy0mj2by651d1.png?width=783&format=png&auto=webp&s=032ce9676499e27172a209623a5c0ca8e8704757
Each party now owes the other something. And it holds the other's liabilities as assets. The deposit is the bank's debt to the borrower. The loan is the borrower's debt to the bank.
The bank's deposit liabilities are special because the borrower can spend them as money. The bank deposits are money to the borrower. The borrower generally can't spend its own debt directly. It must exchange its own liabilities for bank liabilities.
Imagine that I want to pay you money to buy some goods. If I have money, it just works.
https://preview.redd.it/9ofq8qq1751d1.png?width=338&format=png&auto=webp&s=aeaa2dcae347afa55d8634d8381c0462b5583750
I give you the money. You give me the goods in exchange. We've swapped assets.
https://preview.redd.it/b8ahjc83751d1.png?width=647&format=png&auto=webp&s=db34a3ff7a9706a51840fa1f100784217dee728f
If I don't have money, but you know me, then maybe you'll accept my IOU as payment.
https://preview.redd.it/ce118635751d1.png?width=338&format=png&auto=webp&s=fc8b101216ebc9da0ae64ed463901678955afb18
Here are the balance sheets.
https://preview.redd.it/udhhwm77751d1.png?width=714&format=png&auto=webp&s=0108f0215ca48df27dfb1e22dd207a6fea8dfafe
My IOU still isn't money, though. It can't be passed around as a general means of payment. Just because you accepted it as payment doesn't mean you can turn around and spend it again.
If you refuse my IOU as payment, I must find a way to transform it into something you will accept. A bank can help.
https://preview.redd.it/lvrafjaa751d1.png?width=1083&format=png&auto=webp&s=40b50f7cd6a60a6eb236afa00311bfc0abe55f49
Money now exists where none existed before. The bank has "monetized" my IOU.
It is perhaps easier to see what's happening with payment arrows.
https://preview.redd.it/muq5hc3d751d1.png?width=688&format=png&auto=webp&s=d411a8a5cfac0838cd2ca6261b15ef2dda286464
On the left, lending from the bank creates money for me (1). Then, I spend the money to pay you (2). On the right, you end up holding money, which is a liability of the bank. The bank ends up holding the loan, which is a liability of me—my IOU.
The four prices of money:
  • Par — the price of one money in terms of another money right now
  • Interest Rate — the price of money today in terms of money tomorrow
  • Exchange Rate — the price of domestic money in terms of foreign (international) money
  • Price Level — the price of money in terms of commodities/goods
Par
"One money in terms of another money" does not mean the relative price of two different currencies. That's the exchange rate. Instead, par is the relative price of instruments denominated in the same standard monetary unit. It is normally a fixed one-to-one relationship.
We expect a quantity of bank deposits to be redeemable for the same quantity of physical cash, or the same quantity of bank deposits in another bank. By allowing us to move freely between these different instruments, par facilitates the smooth functioning of the payment system. We only tend to notice par when it breaks.
A bank's balance sheet seemingly has money both as an asset (cash reserves) and as a liability (deposits). But only the cash reserves are money from the perspective of the bank. The bank is responsible for maintaining par between these two instruments.
Interest Rate
When two parties swap IOUs, the fact that one party pays the other a fee to enter into the mutual obligation gives us a clue as to which party wants access to the other's liabilities. We call that fee interest. And the interest rate is the price.
When I pay interest on a bank loan, I'm paying for a service. The bank's IOU (deposits) is worth something to me. Interest is what I pay to get it.
Exchange Rate
Today, the main international money is the US dollar. In the late 19th century, it was the pound sterling or gold. In any case, what matters is the relative price between the domestic monetary standard and the international monetary standard. For our purposes, the important feature of an international gold standard isn't the "gold" part so much as it is the "international standard" part.
A fixed exchange rate system is largely analogous to a single monetary standard with par relationships between instruments. Flexible exchange rates are more complicated. We will explore flexible exchange rates in the second half of the course.
Price Level
Notice that when Mehrling justified a role for the central bank, he said nothing about managing inflation. Mehrling emphasizes the price level the least of the four prices of money. This is partly because other economists tend to over-emphasize the price level. Nevertheless, money is meaningless unless it has some actual goods and services to buy. So we don't want to forget the price level entirely.
We also know that stabilizing the price level alone isn't enough to ensure stability of the financial system. By setting aside the price level—and assuming an unproblematic monetary standard—we can more easily explore certain features the system built on top of that standard, how they function, and why they break.

Part 5: Readings: Allyn Young

We will discuss this reading on Wednesday, May 22nd.
These four chapters represent only a tiny fraction of Young's 36 total encyclopedia articles for the 1924/1929 edition of The Book of Popular Science. You can read the rest—and more—in Money and Growth: Selected papers of Allyn Abbott Young Edited by Perry Mehrling and Roger Sandilands. I have not read the other chapters.
Please post any questions and comments below. We will have a one-hour live discussion of Lecture 1 and Lecture 2 on Monday, May 20th, at 2:00pm EDT.

2024.05.18 06:37 neekcrompton I think the current monetization is fine.

Lately, I've seen many posts complaining about how Albion is paying to win, such and such. And I want to discuss about this so players who have quit or new players can get the accurate state of this game. So let's dive in some topics:

1. Is Albion pay to win?

The big question everyone wants to know about an MMORPG, an understandable question for players who want to start playing the game. If I have to answer this question YES or NO, it would be YES. But it's not the way you think.
Let's define what's winning in Albion. If you constitute winning fights over other players as winning in Albion, then it's p2w. Because you can swipe your way through the specs ( which is the equivalent of levels) and good gears (Mind you, this is very costly). Now if you count winning as making profit PvP in the long term, it's not P2W. Because whales who don't know what they are doing will just lose to someone who's 200 ip lower than them.
So is there any paywall to a f2p player? No, if you are good enough. Everything can be bought with money, and if you are an experienced player, your money / resource will only go up. You will eventually get everything that you wanted. In fact, a seasoned veteran will have max spec and max gear just like the whale, making them the true top of the food chain, meanwhile the whale will just give back everything at some rate.

2. Is Albion monetization healthy for the game?

Albion's primary monetization is premium / monthly subscription. Though it can be played without premium, the game is just much more enjoyable with it. I think players who can afford $15 a month should absolutely get it to support the game. The focus it gives you is often good enough to make up for its price. So if you know what you are doing, you only have to pay $15 ONCE (provide that you play enough to make the silver). The cosmetics are whatever, cool i guess?
The gold shop, on the other hand, is quite complex. At first glance, it seems like the gold shop is just straight up pay to win button. While true to a certain extent, stupid whaling gives more to others than yourself in the long run ( read above ). And when the whale buys gold and sells it for silver, It lowers the gold price and somewhat contribute to the f2p ecosystem. Without the gold shop, the silver price will keep on increasing ( assuming that premium is a gold sink!! ) because of the lower amount of gold in the economy.
But can it be improved? Yes, I think the gold price should be higher, while some whale will stop spending, others will still swipe, so the revenue is roughly the same. So the structure kinda looks like : 95 f2p players being supported by 5 mega whales, which I think is not that bad? Consider the fact that these whales are still very beatable / killable.

3. Comparision with other games' monetization method

Well, Albion is the only MMORPG i have played. So this part is for you guys to chime in and discuss the monetization of other games that you think that are worse/ better than Albion. And if you don't agree with any of my point, feel free to comment, we can discuss!
Thank you for reading !

2024.05.18 06:22 Caderyn19 My First Visualization Meditation

I'm new to this group, but I needed to share this because of how powerful it was. This was my first mediation where I didn't fall asleep, and fully let myself go. I'll start with some background context.
I've been reading about Wicca on and off in chunks of life since roughly 16 or 17, starting when I bought Teen Witch by Silver RavenWolf. Since then I keep getting pulled back to Wicca after being raised Roman Catholic. With my family religion pretty heavily set, I never really fully pursued Wicca. My heavy focus would come in waves, I'd get a few signs or hints, get the feeling, read more, then something in life would happen to distract me, bad relationship, drug addiction (which I've overcome), bad car accident... I'm 37 now, and this time I'm finally listening to those that have been calling me for all this time.
This past week I feel like my entire focus has been on Wicca. I was browsing Amazon for random starter items, I bought a new binder, loose leaf paper, have a dedicated pen. I haven't wanted to do anything aside from study and meditate. I'm a new homeowner, so I don't really have older collections of items that mis-match that I can dedicate to ritual. I do have stuff to donate, so a trip to the thrift store is in the works. Finance, thankfully, isn't of concern, I just know I'll get attracted to something more meaningful later on and eventually replace the tools I start with.
For now, I cut a fresh 18"x18" piece of nice astrology printed fabric I had yardage of in my stash, bought two prayer candles one red one white, wafted them with my incense while thinking of negativity leaving the objects, and put them on my kitchen counter with the incense, and that's my little shrine for now. I am not doing any ritual workings with these items, yet at least, they are just a daily reminder to me. The next day I got home from work and did a white light visualization on the items. I felt a little off not doing that in the first place, but also thought about how Advent candles aren't blessed/cleansed and felt a little better. I then wanted a glass of red wine and a chocolate chip cookie, and I poured some for the Goddess, and split the cookie with the God. Now, a few days later, the energy feels different, in a good way.
Tonight, I had a nice sit outside with my earbuds in and meditated... until I thought about refinishing the guest bathtub... then focused back on the 64-65% Waxing Gibbous Moon 🌔 in Virgo ♍ (I'm a Virgo on the Libra cusp) looking upon me. My palo santo sticks should be arriving Saturday so I can cleanse the house, so although I can meditate anywhere, I wanted to be under the Moon for this one. This was just me finding my way with a little more "structured" meditation (a.k.a. stay awake for this one.) I kinda wanted it to be a self-dedication, but I didn't do a cleansing bath/shower, so the actual intent was to be a meditation.
I have read a couple hypnosis books a long time ago, as well as a psychic-work book, who knows if they were novelties, but the hypnosis techniques I've seen in the books have shown up in other places. They stuck with me through life, so I've worked with them on myself to help get to sleep, relax, refocus... This time focusing on the piano in the music I had on helped me really tune down. I played the piano a lot when I was younger so I connect with it and music, and a bit crafty with yarn and other media now.
I was laying on my back on the patio couch two-seater whatever, one of the back part cushions to my back against the arm part, one to my right against the actually back part, feet pointing to about 250°W according to my phone compass, mere degrees before it changes to SW... actually I started sitting facing close to 160°S and eventually layed down to the West position after turning the patio lights off at 21:19:15-20, according to my camera. I just looked up at the Moon, let my mind zone out... I started to drop into beta, but then refinishing the bathtub came back up because I want to have a cleansing soak but the finish is chipping. I refocused and looked at the stick on the screen that was slightly offset the Moon. The clouds started to collect, eventually blocking out the Moon, so I closed my eyes and was able to get back to where I was. Visualizing the Moon made my mind race about deities, like I needed to name names and know right now instead of let the discovery happen as it should. I took a few deep breaths, relaxed my body toes to head, and finally let go.
I had envisioned myself walking naked, in a lightly dewed forest, still a bit misty (I know, cliché, right? It's peaceful, shut up. 😂) It's where I wanted to be at that moment. It was like a blend of a forest and jungle, more foresty. Like the transition between the two biomes, but not in a defined split line. I went to sit between some trees, blinked, and was then viewing a 2-tier stream with many many river stones scattered down the banks. Some of them, as well as trees, covered in moss, some of the trees with vines crawling on them.
There was a human form sitting cross-legged with palms on knees and eyes closed on the right corner overlooking the waterfall to it's right, and the straight path it was flowing a few feet below, running towards and under me to the left. The masculine form had short brown hair, blue eyes like mine, probably 150-ish lbs. For reference, I have dirty blonde hair, 5'9" and 115 lbs.
The forest-jungle behind the man had the standard depiction; lighted areas, dark areas, light shining through moving leaves. I was viewing the form face to face, but a small distance away and my eye-level slightly higher than the top of the form's head. I somewhat felt an attraction to the man's looks. With me being such a small framed person all my life, I've been wanting to gain weight to a healthy range, start working out, and improve my self-confidence in the appearance department. Over the years it's made me a bit shy and timid in groups and meeting people.
My first thought of the form was "Oh that man looks so peaceful." I watched him sit for a minute. For some reason I started to grow concerned about his appearance, almost in a judgmental way. I wasn't picking him apart, I started to compare myself. I felt like that was what I wanted to look like.
Then my hearing started to activate. The music in my earbuds was still there, but sounds from the waterfall started to grow louder on my right, and I could feel the wet ground, the peacefulness, and the energy flowing upwards from my root out my crown... "Wait... why is the waterfall sound on my right? It's to my left." "Why does my butt feel wet?" "Who is that guy?" ...Then I realized...
That form was me. My sight and coherent thought coming from the third-person, feeling and hearing with the sitting form. My concerns grew very heavy as to why the form didn't look like me, if it was in fact me. It almost became unnerving, and I began to deny that the form was me.
I knew it was me, I could feel it.
Still watching in third-person perspective, my form rose up into a standing position, but as if a hand picked it up and the legs went limp and dropped, and the arms propped up on the fingers like a doll, slightly off the ground. The form's head went bald, like all the hairs just decided to jump ship and disappear, my blonde hair grew, and I was placed right back to where I was, looking as I am today, and thrown into first-person perspective, looking though my glasses (astigmatism so the glasses make everything sharper around the edges). I was looking out over the edge of the small waterfall to my right, it went further down into the forest.
Roughly ten feet away, the stream split in two, the left path essentially going straight out in front of me, the second path branching to the right. The forest grew dark and misty as it went on to the left. In the upper-right of my vision there was a break in the trees from the water feature leading to the right with the Sun shining warmly down on everything, including myself. I was hovering over this split while in the third person, so I couldn't see it before... The Sun felt amazing, surrounding me in warmth and peacefulness.
I stood up to investigate the small sun-soaked pool formed at the split. Then I heard racoons picking at the cat food I left out for my neighbors cat and it snapped me out of it. 😡
I stomped my foot a bit and scared them off. I did see a little one with them so I feel bad, but cat food isn't what they should be eating. Plus I don't want that habit to grow and attract them more.
I brought the cat food in after turning the patio lights back on at 21:46:45, again according to the video. The stick of Nag Champa probably had an inch left. I sat back down and looked up. There was a long break in the clouds and it was just the moon looking down on me through the patio screen and the little stick. I couldn't help but smile.
Super powerful journey in 30 minutes.

2024.05.18 05:59 G_hano The Truth About Weak Chins (Long Post)

The Truth About Weak Chins (Long Post)

Hey guys! This hypothesis was posted on my website and decided to post it on Reddit too. For clarification, a weak chin means a lack of a chin point, not a recessed jaw. Not everyone with a recessed jaw has a weak chin and not everyone with a weak chin has a recessed jaw. The hypothesis is called the Lip Function and Chin Morphology Hypothesis (LFCMH)

Introduction

Craniofacial development is influenced by a complex interplay of epigenetic, environmental, and functional factors. While genetics have traditionally been considered the primary determinant of facial morphology, recent insights from the field of functional craniofacial biology suggest a significant role for mechanical forces exerted by soft tissues. Building on this foundation, the Functional Matrix Hypothesis introduced by Melvin Moss highlights that craniofacial structures do not develop in isolation but as adaptive responses to the functional demands of surrounding soft tissues.
The Lip Function and Chin Morphology Hypothesis (LFCMH) further explores this concept by focusing on how specific functions of the lips—ranging from habitual expressions and postures to subconscious movements—might influence the development and final morphology of the chin due to labiomental folding. This hypothesis posits that sustained lip activities, mediated through the mechanics of the associated muscles, particularly the mentalis, could have a formative impact on chin morphology through continuous mechanical stimulation and remodeling.
This investigation seeks to elucidate the potential causal relationships between lip function and chin development. By empirically examining the variations in lip activity and correlating these with differences in chin structure among individuals, the LFCMH aims to offer new perspectives on craniofacial morphogenesis, providing insights that could influence both theoretical understanding and clinical practices in dental and orthodontic fields.

Methods

Image Acquisition and Selection: Photographs were obtained from publicly accessible online databases, ensuring compliance with ethical standards regarding privacy and consent. Selection criteria focused on clear visibility of both lip posture and chin morphology. Images depicting a variety of lip postures were prioritized to ensure a comprehensive analysis. Subjects’ identities were anonymized to maintain confidentiality.
Defining Analytical Parameters: Lip postures were categorized into distinct groups: neutral, tense, and protruded, based on visible muscular engagement and positioning. Chin morphology was assessed by examining attributes such as projection, contour, and strain. This classification facilitated a structured comparison of the relationship between lip posture and chin morphology.
Analytical Process: A visual analysis approach was adopted to evaluate the selected images. Each photograph was examined manually to identify and record the observed lip postures and corresponding chin features. The assessment criteria included:
  • Lip Posture: Position (neutral, tense, protruded), muscular engagement.
  • Chin Morphology: Projection (prominent, recessed), contour (smooth, irregular), strain (relaxed, overexertion).
  • Labiomental Folding: Depth (Deep-set, neutral, flat).
Data Documentation and Categorization Observations were meticulously documented, noting the specific lip posture and chin morphology for each subject. A standardized coding system was used to categorize the observations systematically. This method ensured consistency and facilitated the organization of data for subsequent analysis.
Inter-Observer Reliability To enhance reliability, multiple reviewers independently assessed the images. Discrepancies in observations were discussed and resolved through consensus, ensuring that the recorded data accurately reflected the visual assessments.
Statistical Analysis Given the visual nature of the analysis, descriptive statistics were primarily used to summarize the data. Correlation analysis was conducted to explore potential associations between different lip postures and chin morphology characteristics. This analysis aimed to identify patterns that support the Lip Function and Chin Morphology Hypothesis (LFCMH).
Ethical Considerations The study adhered to ethical guidelines for research involving visual data. All images were anonymized to protect subject privacy, and no identifying information was retained. The research protocol was reviewed and approved by an institutional review board to ensure ethical compliance.

Results

Overview of Findings: A total of 142 images were analyzed to explore the relationship between lip posture and chin morphology. The images were categorized based on the observed condition of the mentalis muscle, which was either strained and wrinkled due to protruded lips or relaxed with a good lip seal. This categorization aimed to distinguish between "prominent" chins, characterized by a prominent and well-defined chin profile, and "recessed" chins, marked by visible strain in the mentalis muscle and less prominence.
Categorization of Lip Postures and Chin Morphology
1. Protruded Lip Posture with Strained Mentalis Muscle
  • Description: Lips protruded forward, causing the mentalis muscle to strain and wrinkle.
  • Observations: 56 images displayed a protruded lip posture with a strained mentalis muscle, and/or a labiomental fold that was neutral, flat, or in-between, but not deep-set. Among these, 96.43% exhibited a recessed chin profile, often accompanied by visible mentalis strain, and/or, flat labiomental fold.

Correlation Analysis The visual assessment revealed notable patterns correlating lip posture with chin morphology:
  • Protruded Lip Posture with Strained Mentalis: Frequently associated with a recessed chin, suggesting that the strain in the mentalis muscle, functionality of the mentalis and lip muscles, and their impact on labiomental folding, contributes to a less prominent chin profile.
  • Good Lip Seal with Relaxed or protruded Mentalis: Strongly correlated with a well-defined, prominent chin, supporting the hypothesis that a relaxed mentalis muscle due to proper lip seal promotes favorable chin development. There was no mentalis strain (except for short, periodic facial expressions), or flat labiomental folding in any images observed.
Discussion of Patterns: The observed patterns support the Lip Function and Chin Morphology Hypothesis (LFCMH). Specifically, the findings suggest that habitual lip postures significantly influence chin morphology. Protruded lips, associated with mentalis muscle strain, and a non-prominent labiomental fold, tend to result in a recessed chin. Conversely, maintaining a good lip seal with a relaxed or protruded mentalis muscle, and creating a deep labiomental fold, correlates with a more prominent and aesthetically pleasing chin.

Discussion

Interpretation of Findings
The findings from this study provide observational support for the Lip Function and Chin Morphology Hypothesis (LFCMH). The analysis of lip posture and functional lip activity, particularly during dynamic expressions such as laughing and speaking, suggests a significant relationship between these behaviors and the resulting chin morphology. Individuals with strong chins tend to exhibit specific lip postures and functional behaviors that promote a prominent and well-defined chin. Conversely, those with weaker chins often lack these behaviors, resulting in a less pronounced chin profile.
Functional Matrix Theory
The results can be contextualized within the framework of the Functional Matrix Theory, which posits that skeletal structures develop in response to the functional demands placed upon them by the surrounding soft tissues. This theory emphasizes that bones do not grow independently but rather as adaptive responses to the mechanical forces exerted by the muscles and other tissues around them.

Impact of Lip Posture on The Labiomental Fold

A key indicator of chin prominence observed in this study is the depth and definition of the labiomental fold—the crease between the lower lip and the chin. A deeper labiomental fold with a sharper angle is often associated with a stronger, more prominent chin. This fold is influenced by the activity of the mentalis muscle and the overall usage of the lower lip.
The findings suggest that individuals with a prominent chin often maintain a lip posture that keeps the lower lip, or more specifically, the lower orbicularis oris muscle in a neutral or slightly pressed position against the lower teeth. This posture engages the mentalis muscle in a balanced manner, promoting the development of a well-defined labiomental fold. Additionally, during dynamic expressions such as laughing or speaking, the functional behavior of pressing the lower orbicularis oris muscle against the lower incisor region further reinforces the prominence of the chin and the depth of the labiomental fold.
Conversely, individuals with a recessed chin typically do not engage the mentalis muscle or the lower orbicularis oris muscle in the same way. Their lip posture tends to be more relaxed or protruded, leading to more mentalis muscle strain and a shallower labiomental fold. This lack of consistent muscle engagement and the absence of reinforcing and even opposing behaviors during dynamic expressions contribute to a weaker chin profile.
Clinical Implications
Understanding the relationship between lip posture, functional lip activity, and chin morphology has significant clinical implications. Orthodontists and facial aesthetic practitioners can leverage this knowledge to develop interventions aimed at improving chin prominence. Techniques that encourage better lip posture and functional engagement of the mentalis muscle could potentially enhance chin development in individuals with weaker chins.
Future Research
While this study provides valuable insights, further research is needed to substantiate these findings. Experimental studies with larger sample sizes and longitudinal designs would help establish causal relationships and explore the underlying mechanisms in greater detail. Additionally, advanced imaging techniques could provide more precise measurements of the labiomental fold and chin morphology, enhancing the robustness of future studies.

Conclusion

The Lip Function and Chin Morphology Hypothesis (LFCMH) is supported by observational evidence linking specific lip postures and functional activities to chin prominence. The depth of the labiomental fold serves as a key indicator of this relationship, with stronger functional engagement leading to a more defined chin profile. These findings align with the principles of the Functional Matrix Theory, emphasizing the role of soft tissue dynamics in craniofacial development. Further research will be essential to deepen our understanding and translate these insights into practical clinical applications.

2024.05.18 05:58 G_hano The Truth About Weak Chins (Long Post)

2024.05.18 05:49 kingozma My partners and I are high. Here are the Genshin Elements of characters from the Sonic universe according to us

I'm posting this for the real ones who will appreciate it. If you dont like it i dont care
Sonic - Anemo, obviously according to my boyfriend. You and him are same in the way that / You have your own styles that you won't change. But he has standards of right and wrong that sometimes hold back his love of freedom, so a good argument can be made for Hydro too IMO. But also my partners convinced me back to Anemo because really what he actually WANTS out of life is to just do his own thing and chill and Anemo is so strongly about movement-related skills. Also it would be really funny and ironic for him to be Hydro bc he's afraid of watecan't swim and I didn't even think of that.
Tails - Anemo is an easy one because of his movement skills/flying, but IMO Dendro makes more sense. It's associated with technology and discovery, his primary passions. Throughout the series, he has become more independent and sure of himself without needing to be "just like" Sonic, as he has gotten deeper into his role/hobby as an inventotechy guy.
Knuckles - Geo. He embodies the Lord of Geo on such an incredible level, more than most playable Geo Vision Holders do. He is defined by his sense of responsibility to the point that it can lead him into trouble. He is gullible bc he is wise, especially emotionally, but not booksmart in the way that Eggman is.
Amy - Cryo. You can see in modern Sonic that her unrequited love (romantic of course but even in platonic ways too!) for Sonic is really starting to almost depress her. Love and broken hearts and whatnot. She is defined by these tragedies in her life in the way that it's starting to change her from a happy and cheerful, unashamed girl into a sort of self-loathing, sad girl who hides behind a clever and tomboyish disguise.
Cream - Cryo. Watching G-Merl die, basically having to help kill him, was traumatizing and heartbreaking (after witnessing Emerl's death when she was too young to really understand how he was a sort of predecessor to G-Merl, who she knew better, until after G-Merl died. That's when it all came together for Cream) to her, but she's still so kind and soft and gentle and she hasn't let it get her down. She is defined by these tragedies in her life in the way that it's influenced her to keep being soft and gentle and cheerful, for herself and her friends.
Blaze - Hydro. It's funny and ironic but you know I'm right. Moral code and justice and whatnot. My wife loves Blaze she's cool as fuck yo
Shadow - Had an Electro delusion as the Original Shadow. Has a Pyro Vision as current canon Shadow. Sort of a Wanderer-like story if you think about it. I guess you could argue Anemo for current canon Shadow but I think he is defined largely by his trauma and rage - and then, how he has learned to make peace with it and use it to grow into a healthier, happier person who turns that passion towards protecting the people he loves and relies on as friends. Pyro in the same way that Zuko ATLA is a Firebender.
Rouge - Hydro. She is a double agent working for the force of good, her just moral code is her entire character and livelihood. That's her true passion, not just collecting jewels. Do you seriously think the good guys can get you more jewels than the bad guys can, with all their rules and moral inhibitions?! That's insane. She's fronting. She's trying to lure you into underestimating her so when she needs to use you, you won't even realize she's doing it. She's that good at her job.
Eggman - Pre-SA1 Eggman who we have begun to theorize is actually Post-SA2 Eggman's fatheGerald's son is Electro. He is evil for the sake of being evil honestly and has basically no lows he wouldn't stoop to in pursuit of his idea of Eternity/Euthymia. Post-SA2 Eggman is Dendro. He is primarily about science and discovery, he would probably not actively purposely hurt people, but he just doesn't really care how it affects people. There's a fine difference between those two approaches to the same thing, villainous megalomania.

2024.05.18 05:36 finchestech Understanding HTML and CSS: Foundations of Web Development

What is HTML?

HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language and serves as the backbone of all web pages. It allows you to display content on the Internet, including text, links, images, and tables. HTML uses "tags" to define different types of content. For instance, represents a paragraph. Most tags are used in pairs: an opening tag and a closing tag. These tags provide the necessary structure, enabling browsers to present content correctly.

What is CSS?

CSS, or Cascading Style Sheets, is a styling language used to enhance the appearance of web pages. While HTML lays out the structure, CSS adds aesthetic touches. With CSS, you can alter colors, fonts, spacing, and more, creating responsive layouts for various devices like phones and laptops. In CSS, you define a list of rules where each rule targets an HTML element to apply specific styles. For example, color: red; will color the text red.

How HTML and CSS Interact

HTML and CSS work in tandem to construct and style a webpage. Initially, HTML forms the basic structure or the 'skeleton' of the page. CSS then acts like the 'paint and decoration,' adding style and flair. This combination is crucial for building functional and visually appealing web pages.

Learning HTML and CSS

Starting with HTML and CSS is a fundamental step towards becoming a web developer. These technologies are relatively straightforward to learn, and numerous online resources are available to assist beginners. Practical application through building simple web pages is essential. As you practice, you will gradually master more complex designs and techniques, enhancing your web development skills.

2024.05.18 03:51 handsome_squidwardd AITA for transposing my ex bf's wife's face onto a different body and posting it on Instagram?

Background information:
My (30F) ex bf (32M) that I dated when I was 15 years old is now married to a woman (27F) who has been cyber stalking me for over 9 years. This began in 2015 when they started dating- I would get frequent friend requests from this woman on Facebook. At the time, I didn't know who she was, and I was only adding people that I knew in real life. After rejecting several requests and noticing that she had lots of mutual friends, I came to the conclusion that she was either a bot or just someone obsessed with having as many FB friends as possible. Over the next few months, I got messages from close friends and family members asking if I knew her. One of my friends finally put together that she was actually dating my high school ex. She (the now wife) had even messaged a couple of my coworkers claiming that we all worked together. After several of my friends reached out asking me about this, I finally decided to look at her following list on instagram (she had started sending me requests there too). I found she was following many of my close friends, several of my cousins including two that lived out of state at the time, some of my then bf's friends, and even his aunt that lived in another country. I was so freaked out, I admittedly reacted and posted on her fb wall saying, "wtf" and asking her to message me. She build a straw-man argument about how it was so wrong for me to post a swear word on her fb wall, and not acknowledging her totally obsessive and creepy online behavior. There is a lot that has happened in these 9 years, but in summary, I have not been left alone online by this girl for longer than a period of 4 months. I have gotten requests and messages from fake accounts that are so transparently her, except I obviously can't prove it. She made an instagram account and a snapchat account pretending to be two different people that she thought I might know. One of these was pretending to be this very sweet girl from my high school who was heavily bullied, and when I messaged her to ask if it was he let her know about the account, she was absolutely devastated. Anyway, in addition to Facebook and Instagram, she has also tried to message me on the following platforms: Twitter, Snapchat, TikTok, Pinterest, Etsy, Venmo, Reddit (9 different accounts all made after she found me, doxxed me, and I blocked her), and email. I've gotten anonymous text messages and phone calls- one on my birthday one year at 2:30 am from a website that allows you to "send calls" to people at different times. I've gotten hundreds of items in the mail that I was signed up for anonymously- things like diapers, housing material samples, magazine subscriptions, sample items, stickers, etc. Both of my parents have gotten lengthy messages from her complaining that I am being mean to he that I need help/ or even apologizing for "the harm she has caused." Just to clarify, me "being mean," or "bullying her," to her is defined as me not accepting her social media requests, and being freaked out about the lengths she is willing to go to so she can contact me. Around 3 years ago, I got a temporary restraining order on her. The judge basically told me that the permanent one wouldn't be granted, since she is not really threatening me. This was pretty discouraging, and so I did not pursue it. The TRO gave me 4 months of peace before she was back at it. Once I realized that the police could not care less, the legal system won't have my back, and for every privacy feature in place for social media, there's one or more to help work around it, I decided I was going to start sharing what was happening via instagram. Granted, my profile is private, and I had like 200 followers max. And remember, I have made every effort to block this girl and I have explicitly asked her to stop contacting me/ stop making fake accounts to follow me/ leave my family alone.
So, for a couple years, I have been documenting the contacts she has been making, mail openings, and photos of myself to remind people of what I look like before I end up on dateline. Fast forward to the past couple weeks, a coworker recommended I watch Baby Reindeer on Netflix. This show really captured every feeling I have had during this 9 years of harassment and gaslighting. So, as the show started to get bigger, and this woman continued to cyber stalk me, I did my usual posting of her messages on instagram stories (to my private follower list). I concluded the series with a picture of Martha (the stalker) from Baby Reindeer, with my stalker's face transposed onto her body. Totally juvenile, I know, but I thought it was funny and what better way than humor to cope with a situation I am entirely powerless in. She of course somehow saw this, despite my efforts to block her, and sent me a message accusing me of "bullying her." Note: she thought this photo was me calling her fat?? I guess she didn't see or even hear about the show. whoooosh. I know what she's doing is wrong and crazy, but was it wrong of me to post this pic of her on my instagram story?
A couple things I forgot to mention above: at one point, I gave up and decided to let her follow my instagram, with rationale being that she was just going to do it anyway without my knowledge, and I followed her back. This was creepy, because right away it was clear that she had been doing everything she could to emulate me. She made the same crafts I had posted about, was starting the same hobbies I was doing, posting photos with similar posing and lighting, and even getting tattoos in the same style and location on her body. One time she showed up at a craft fair because she knew my friend had a table at it. She approached my friend and talked to her, then later messaged me stating, "I met your friend and she was nice to me!" As if my friend (a vendor at this event) could be anything but polite to her. She messages me to wish me happy holidays, and oh yeah, to congratulate me on the day of my wedding which was coincidently also the day of HER wedding.

2024.05.18 03:32 cstcharles Lipo Help Please! Smart vs Regular

tl/dr: are there any studies/evidence around which type of fat removal actually has more skin tightening? Or is it a tossup?
I'm in the process of getting quotes for liposuction. Standard locations - lower belly, haunches, outer thigh, inner thigh, arms.
I have one quote for smart lipo on all areas. No additional procedures. I have a second quote for regular lipo for the larger areas (belly, haunches, outer thigh) and bodytite+lipo for the smaller areas (arms, inner thighs).
BOTH doctors discussed, at length, how their respective methods will have a tighter appearance, that OTHER methods are more likely to have sagging. Literally, the doc who wants to do regular lipo says [paraphrasing] "smart lipo goes after everything so the skin has nothing to grab onto while it heals, whereas classic lipo leaves some of those underlying structures intact so your body can heal and tighten up" or... something like that.
I've scoured for as much information as I can for the differences and the best thing I can come up with is - there is no evidence to support that smart lipo (and its ilk) has more skin tightening effect than classic lipo, but there isn't less of an effect either. As far as pros/cons - classic lipo can remove more fat. Smart lipo has less downtime.
For context, I'm only 15lbs from my fittest, when I had a slight midline in my abs and a very well defined back and legs. I've always had thicker arms and I know those can be particularly hard to treat so I'm trying to keep my expectations low. I'm 39, with good skin, not seeing lots of wrinkles (yet), so skin laxity isn't a huge concern.
My challenge is that the regular lipo quote is about 6k more than the smart lipo quote. So, while I'm sure it will most likely yield more volume removed, I question if it will be worth it, given my current size/shape vs desired size/shape? In other words, if I don't have that much fat to take, how much better could regular lipo be?

2024.05.18 03:10 prerepitation My favorite Gojo theory and its narrative power

There’s obviously a lot of theories going around and one of the biggestI see go around is the notion that Gojo must’ve made a binding vow where he relinquished one of the Six Eyes for a “second wind” and is now at half power, cheating death.
There’s a lot of reasons I’m partial to this theory, chief among which is its narrative cogency and how powerful it’d be for the narrative of JJK.
A big motif in JJK is jujutsu itself and it communicates a big question in the story about whether or not there is really any point to what sorcerers do, as their conflict against curses is inherently cyclical and spurned on by non-sorcerers. Even their own power grows in direct proportion to their own suffering. Gojo embodies this conflict very well. He is the strongest yet can accomplish nothing that he sees as choice-worthy. All he can do is dispatch curses and live at the behest of the Jujutsu Society. His life is essentially the summit of sorcerer existence and how mundane and horribly dissatisfying it is. He possesses no higher ideal until recently in our story and there is no conflict which motivates him to be better until Sukuna rolls around.
However, towards the beginning of this story, you see that Gojo does begin to develop a sense of motivation rooted in what he sees in his students. They are all weaker than him, but they possess transcendental values which move them. There’s a sense of right and wrong, rather than living at the behest of authority structures and allowing them to arbitrarily define these things for them. They disobey the Society and form goals for the sake of goodness itself. Gojo could never really do this.
Going now to Sukuna, Sukuna is sort of an aberration of Gojo. He is the strongest but he is his own law-maker. He adheres to nothing beyond his basest passions. Sex, violence, and strength for its own sake. His inner conflict starts to play out in this current arc because he sees existence as a desperate gambit to avoid boredom and now that he is at the summit, he can’t help but be bored. He even questions himself doing this because in the avoidance of boredom he further protracts it. He murders people with the potential to surpass a mere couple of months into being a sorcerer. His gluttony (a huge motif with this character) actively destroys him, and he desperately attaches himself to impulsive goals to avoid that feeling of emptiness and despair.
We have two twin summits here. Gojo & Sukuna. Both are not good. They both suffer and perpetuate their own suffering through their lack of transcendental motivations. They both just sort of “go with the flow” and are entirely apathetic unless conflict arises. Gojo’s students, however, are not like this, notwithstanding the fact that they’re weaker than them both. They all possess a will which is ordered towards something higher than themselves or towards the cyclical, mechanistic nature of jujutsu and the Society.
Going back to the beginning, the reason Gojo sacrificing his power to cheat death would be so narratively powerful is because it squarely brings front and center the conflict between Yuji & Sukuna. Yuji is motivated by something higher than power, but Sukuna finds power choice-worthy for its own sake and believes the only way to become more powerful is that sense of selfishness. The only way to be a good Jujutsu sorcerer, or human being, is to live entirely according to your own desires. The ego informs the moral. Yuji disagrees. And now, the whole cast disagrees and opposes this ideology directly.
For the summit of Jujutsu existence, Satoru Gojo, to let go of his strength for the purpose of destroying Sukuna, whose entire philosophy is predicated on the idea that might makes right and that hedonic self-interest is the purpose of existence, is just an incredibly powerful resolution to a really interesting conflict. To both breakaway from the cyclical nature of jujutsu, to defeat Sukuna philosophically, etc., would just be pretty incredible. Gojo would become new in a sense and be able to fully be a person, rather than merely the strongest.
It is (not) Gojover.

2024.05.18 02:15 ZamboniThatCocaine Every time Graham Hancock was wrong/looked stupid in #2136 (first 2 hours)

23:41 he thanks Flint for joining him like it's his podcast
33:01 have to cut because he doesn't know what airdrop is
37:40 Graham tries to bait Flint into saying 1% of the Sahara has been excavated. This is misleading because they use a wide array of other tools/methods in desert archaeology and primarily collect data on the Sahara without excavating
38:56 Graham continues to press the 1% desert number despite this
46:00 instead of evidence he cites his 200 dives at the site of Yonaguni and being “hands on”
47:02 when pushed about Kerama being man made, he cites a “skeptical” geologist he took diving there who supported his claim instead of providing evidence
47:56 in South India he claims his wife spoke with locals in Tamil and claims they said there were structures and a city underwater instead of evidence. The pictures he then showed were blurry
48:52 Joe’s first challenge of Graham. He asks for clearer photos but Graham doesn't have any
49:38 claims for a second time that they had risked their lives for “30 years”, but they primarily just traveled the world and scuba dived as tourists
53:59 cites one Japanese professor to back up Yonaguni claims when pushed. Admits he took a separate geologist there on 3 dives and he later showed skepticism about it being man made
57:08 Joe is now 100% skeptical. Asks Graham for the most compelling evidence of an underwater site that`s man made. Graham suggests the images they were currently looking at were the most compelling
57:18 Graham says that they have only seen a fraction of his slides of Yonaguni and there are carved faces and structures that are more compelling but he doesn't show these
1:01:25 Flint shows what an actual underwater man-made site looks like. Additionally mentions that what they find underwater should match the architecture onland near the site
1:01:41 Graham says Yonaguni looks like Sacsayhuanan when it doesn't at all
1:01:45 Dibble says Yonaguni looks nothing like Sacsayhuanan. Graham says he's “been there dozens of times” and because Dibble hasn't been there he doesn't know the site
1:03:18 Dibble adds that Graham also can't date any of these claims. Graham responds by ignoring the question and pointing at an image Jamie was showing and saying “there are lots of this in Sacsayhuanan, as you would know if you'd been there”
1:10:15 after being introduced to airdrop for the first time 45 minutes ago, Graham suggests Dibble use aidrop on his PC
1:15:42 Graham lays out his biggest argument which is there is so much unsearched in the Amazon, Sahara and Ocean that there is still the possibility of his civilization
1:17:30 Dibble cements that they have an abundance of evidence of other civilizations around the same period and the scale of data is such that it’s incredibly unlikely they didn't pick up on an advanced global civilization during the period Graham is claiming
1:27:03 Joe asks if there is no evidence of an advanced civilization in what archaeologists HAVE studied and Graham says yes there isn't any, tries to change topics
1:43:20 they have to cut again as he still can't use airdrop
1:46:10 puts down Dibble’s “small outreach” on youtube. Claims Dibble puts himself out there to journalists to smear Hancock when in reality it was Hancock talking about their debate that got media attention aimed at Dibble in the first place
1:48:31 Hancock uses one troll online saying “satan loves Graham Hancock the most” as an argument to some sort of targeted smear campaign against him during his slideshow.
1:49:51 Joe tries to nail down some evidence from Hancock, Hancock says he's moving on from the subject but Joe says it's important. Hancock stumbles on an answer and says vaguely it’s “years of dedicated work”
1:50:19 Joe is skeptical that the tool is man made, so is Dibble who claims the excavator who dug it is also skeptical. Joe wants to see the photo again, Graham first tries to delay and says “we’d have to play the video again” followed up by saying “that’s the least important of it” three times in the next few minutes and that “we don’t have time”
1:55:27 Graham successfully changes the subject to seismic tomography and ground penetrating radar. Joe asks how this is evidence that it is man made. Graham many times mentions “Danny and his team” and their interpretations of tunnels and chambers and there are unnatural formations. Joe pressures for more evidence a few times, asks if this reading is “just it?”, Graham responds “no there is much more but we don’t have time to go there”
2:00:15 Joe says there is less evidence for this than Bimini Road as it’s just the interpretation of GPR and there are questions marks after the words chamber and tunnel. Dibble additionally says GPR is often wrong and you need other means to confirm findings
2:01:27 instead of presenting it, Graham says there is a big article full of evidence by Danny on his website people can view
2:01:47 Joe asks if the GPR evidence is more or less compelling than Bimini road. Graham says it’s “at least as compelling” and then says “we don’t have time to get into it here” before moving on by asking Jamie to “put his HDMI back on”

2024.05.18 02:10 ses1 The Problem of Divine Hiddenness - Refuted

The Problem of Divine Hiddenness [PDH] argument is to demonstrate that, if God existed, He would (or would likely) make the truth of His existence more obvious to everyone than it is. There are many different “flavors” of PDH, but they are all similar in that they comprise basically the same core: two idea that are supposed to be incompatible with each other:
1) the existence of God and
2) the occurrence of some kind of “nonbelief” phenomenon.
I will be examining the PDH put forth by Schellenberg, since his seems to be the most popular at the moment.
Definitions:
God: Given that this is a Christian debate forum I’ll define God as most Christians do, as He is described by the Scriptures: Omniscient, Omnipotent; Perfectly Loving, Holy, and Just. God has other attributes, but for this discussion I think these will suffice.
Non-resistant- non-belief [NRNB] – when someone who is (i) not resisting God and (ii) capable of a meaningful conscious relationship with God, and yet (iii) does not believe that God exists.
The PDH argument The core of Schellenberg’s argument is simply that:
1) God would ensure that there are no nonresistant nonbelievers,
2) but since there actually are nonresistant nonbelievers,
3) we must conclude that God does not exist.
This is how Schellenberg argues:
1) Necessarily, if God exists, anyone who is (i) not resisting God and (ii) capable of meaningful conscious relationship with God is also (iii) in a position to participate in such relationship (able to do so just by trying). (PREMISE)
2) Necessarily, one is at a time in a position to participate in meaningful conscious relationship with God only if at that time one believes that God exists. (PREMISE)
3) Necessarily, if God exists, anyone who is (i) not resisting God and (ii) capable of meaningful conscious relationship with God also (iii) believes that God exists. (From 1 and 2)
4) There are (and often have been) people who are (i) not resisting God and (ii) capable of meaningful conscious relationship with God without also (iii) believing that God exists. (PREMISE)
5) God does not exist source
Thesis: The Problem of Divine Hiddenness [PDH] is not a problem for Christians, as it fatally fails on a number of counts:
A) it is faith/trust/repentance, that is important not mere belief
B) God has morally sufficient reasons to hide Himself from certain people
C) Critics cherry-pick data
D) the existence of non-resistant non-believers is unprovable
Objection A - it is repentance/faith/trust in Jesus – i.e. that He is who He says He is, and will do what He says He will do - that’s what is vitally important, not mere belief in God’s existence. God’s purpose is that we repent and come to trust Him [i.e. have faith] not just merely believe that He exists; that mere belief does nothing for our relationship with God.
Most assume that the word ‘faith’ is more or less synonymous with the word “believe,” but the Bible is careful to communicate that it is not. James says: “Even the demons believe—and shudder!” James 2:19.
Many understand the term repentance to mean “a turning from sin.” Yet in the Bible, the word repent means “to change one’s mind.” Paul declares, “I preached that they should repent and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds” (Acts 26:20). The short biblical definition of repentance is “a change of mind that results in a change of action.”
The book of Acts especially focuses on repentance in regard to salvation (Acts 2:38; 3:19; 11:18; 17:30; 20:21; 26:20). To repent, concerning salvation, is to change your mind regarding sin and Jesus Christ. In Peter’s sermon on the day of Pentecost (Acts chapter 2), he concludes with a call for the people to repent (Acts 2:38).
Peter calls the people who rejected Jesus (Acts 2:36) to change their minds about that sin and to change their minds about Christ Himself, recognizing that He is indeed “Lord and Christ” (Acts 2:36). True repentance is prompted by “godly sorrow,” and it “leads to salvation” (2 Corinthians 7:10).
Repentance and faith can be understood as two sides of the same coin. It is impossible to place your faith in Jesus Christ as the Savior without first changing your mind about your sin and about who Jesus is and what He has done. Whether it is repentance from willful rejection or repentance from ignorance or disinterest, it is a change of mind. Biblical repentance, in relation to salvation, is changing your mind from rejection of Christ to faith in Christ.
Thus, merely believing in God's existence sans repentance and trust in Jesus does nothing for one's soul.
Objection B - God has morally sufficient reasons to hide Himself from certain people. The basic idea is that many non-believers, would NOT come to repentance/faith/trust in God even if God's existence were not subject to doubt. And their moral conduct wouldn’t improve, and might even increase. However, immoral conduct in such a state of affairs would be even more immoral since they know that Jesus is God and every sin is now a willful violation, and hence justly subject to greater punishment. Jesus affirms there are different degrees of punishment – see Matthew 11:20-24; Luke 12:47–48; Hebrews 10:28-29; 2 Peter 2:20-22; James 3:1-2; Matt. 10:15 - in the next life. But even more importantly, our level of knowledge and understanding is, in part, the basis for this punishment.
Thus, God mercifully remains ‘hidden’ to limit their moral culpability.
Objection C - Critics cherry-pick data – Critics say, for this argument [and others like the problem of evil] that God is omnibenevolent or Perfectly Loving. Where do they get this idea? From the Scriptures or from Christian via the Scriptures. But there is data that is ignored. For instance, the Bible clearly states that non-believers are in rebellion and are not non-resistant.
To consistently use the Bible would be the death warrant for the PDH, for to be consistent, they would have to use all of Scripture to define God and man rather than just what is convenient for the hiddenness argument. The fact is that the Scriptures present a worldview radically different from that presented by critics, the most significant and obvious distinction between a secular worldview and the biblical worldview is the nature of man.
According to Scripture, man is not a morally-neutral being but is a sinner and in a natural state of rebellion against his Creator (Rom 3:9–19; Eph 2:1–3; Gen 8:21; Col 2:13). Man does not reject God because there is no evidence for God, but because man twists the evidence to justify His own rebellion and hate of God (Rom 1:18–23).
The critic cannot even begin to argue against the existence of God via the PDH unless he can prove God’s omni-benevolence, but the only option for that is to approach the nature of God from the Christian worldview [lest a strawman is built] but, this worldview is not compatible with the moral neutrality of humanity as asserted by the PDH, and thus an appeal to the Christian understanding of God is self-defeating.
Objection D - the existence of non-resistant non-believers is unprovable, since nonresistant non-belief is a thought of the mind. If I were to state, “I was thinking about taking my daughter out for a ride on my motorcycle,” how would I go about proving that I thought about that? I cannot prove that I am thinking such a thought, for the mind cannot be observed in such a way. Thus, those whom I share this information with must simply take me at my word.
If a believer approaches an unbeliever and says, “I know God exists because God speaks to me through my thoughts via His word,” do you suppose that the unbeliever would accept this statement as evidence that God does exist? Hardly. What if, instead of one believer, one million believers approached this unbeliever and made the same argument. Would the unbeliever then accept that as evidence that God exists. Highly unlikely.
Why then should we believe the testimony of a non-believer when they say they are non-resistant?
Furthermore, it seems likely that a non-believer would be biased towards thinking that they are non-resistant since this proves their stance that God doesn’t exist or that they are justified in their non-belief.
Thus, the non-believer cannot prove they are non-resistant, and they have every reason to be biased in their assessment of their non-resistantance.
Conclusion: Given the four objections above, the PDH is not a problem for Christians. Any of these four objections are fatal to the PDH, in and of themselves, independent of any other objection.

2024.05.18 02:01 JellyDoodle Please advise on "Operation Opium Orgy"

Why? Because I had to use 3 O's for alliteration. The goal of "OOO" is to quit my day job and make this my primary source of income!
I've spent the last 3 months refining my strategy. I will be intra-day trading high liquidity options! (dun dun duuunn)
What I Did
Where I'm At
Results So Far
(I had some problems on day 1 modifying orders in ToS and had to call Schweehb to get it all worked out. Probably took more loss than I would have under fair circumstances)
The Next Step
Next week I will be using 1% of my maximum capital as test fodder to execute live trades to ensure that stops and order fulfillments happen as expected. I'll be risking 1-2% of that amount per position. I've estimated that I should be able to safely lose at least 20-25 times without drawing down an unreasonable amount given the sum I'm using.
What I'm Asking For
I want to make sure I've done my due diligence. If you're a successful day trader, please hit me some insight. Am I pacing myself correctly? Do I need to take a step back and do more back testing? How would you roll out to max capital? Anything blaringly obvious I might need to check myself on?
Thanks very much! Happy trading.

2024.05.18 01:42 Yayeet2014 In defense of Kep1er and ZB1’s overall sound

I’ve seen a lot of arguments that Kep1er doesn’t have an identity in terms of their sound or concept. I’m also starting to see this argument with regards to ZB1’s musical identity, so I’m just gonna spell out some common patterns I see within their title tracks and come up with a name for their defining sound. I’m doing both these groups because they’re from the Planet series, and under Wake One, and comparisons are inevitable. Also, this is just MY opinion, don’t take my word as gospel.
Kep1er’s sound has gone through a lot of tonal shifts throughout their run. We especially saw this with their first three releases. However, all of their title tracks have three key components: heavy bass, prevalent drum machine beats, and a video game like synth. When I listen to Kep1er, it feels like I’m playing a lighthearted video game. Think like pac-man, Wii Sports, or Mario Kart. So I basically think of their defining sound as “video game synth pop.”
ZB1 has also gone through some tonal shifts within their three Korean releases. However, all their title tracks have this light, dream-like synth with a heavy drum-machine. Their title tracks, whether light or dark in tone, have this ethereal, lullaby like feel to them, a sound that feels like you’re floating. It’s reflected in how they present themselves too within their concepts and aesthetics: the ethereal seemingly out of reach boy that you can only dream of yet try so hard to reach out and grab. I basically pin down their sound to “ethereal synth pop.” As for their concept, I see them as what I can only describe as “manic pixie dream boy.”
Clearly, I love both of these groups, and maybe I’m reaching. I’m also not gonna give credit to Wake One for crafting up these sounds and images either. But my point is that these groups have a core sound in my opinion, it’s just gone through some tonal shifts and isn’t for everyone.

2024.05.18 00:26 Internal_Prune_5108 contracting 101

Residential Contracting 101
With over 20 years of building experience, I would like to share with you my insights in navigating becoming a successful contractor. With many different avenues of the building world its key to understand what problems will arise on any given day. A man once told a saying that stuck-the 6 p’s in life- Piss Poor Preparation leads to Piss Poor Performance. Preparation builds everything in construction, without preparation the jobsite will not run correctly. The best advice I was ever given was to learn a little about every trade giving you the ability to understand trade lingo and secrets. An example would be painters use the terminology flash; this means when the sub structure bleads through the paint. Subcontractors will give the best pricing if they respect your knowledge of the industry. If the subcontractor feels they will have to hold your hand through the job they will charge an extra fee…i.e. I call it the aggravation fee. In this blog I will explain the key elements in finding success in all aspects of the industry. Contracting is a physically and emotionally demanding job which requires planning and foresight to complete projects on time within budget. Picking your customer is just as important as picking your employees or subcontractors. I have worked for some of the most demanding customers leading me to question at the end if the job was even worth it. Sleepless nights, constant changes, lack of payment, lawsuit threats, adding work that was in the contract are just a few things you could face with a tough customer. With so many moving parts at all times it is critical to be able to adapt to changes within a short time frame. Materials will come in damaged, subcontractors will be late, employees will get sick, but the deadline you set does not change. The stress can be overwhelming at times keeping your mind in a good place is key to navigating all that is thrown at you. Choosing your client picking the right jobs-Keep these questions in mind The first question to be asked is what the time frame is to start the job to see if it fits within the timeframe for your business. If the time frame doesn’t work then move on from the project or let them know when you would be available to start. If the client really wants to use, they will wait until you are available. Taking on too much work will only lead to problems. Construction is a serviced based business, staying on top of the project and client will eliminate an unhappy customer and construction issues that will be over seen. With online presence if details are missed and customer service lacks it will only be a matter of time the phone will not ring. The second question to be asked to the client is do they have a budget in mind for the project. If they answer yes this is good, follow through with what the budget is. If the budget seems low let them know, this will eliminate a tire kicker, educate them on what the price range could be. If the budget seems reasonable then continue the discussion to the next question. If they answer no let them know that you can give them an estimate to see if the project is feasible with their finical capabilities. Taking on a job that is not correctly budgeted will lead to an unsatisfied customer due to non-transparency of the construction cost. The third question to be asked is anyone else bidding on the job, if the answer is yes, understand you might just be number check for the contractor doing the job. Dig a little deeper and find out how many numbers they are getting and why. If your business model is to be competitive be completely transparent with customer, this will gain trust with them. Let them know you get what you pay for and if you they choose the lowest bid it could lead into lack of quality of work.
The fourth question I will ask is there any specific subcontractors they wanted to use. If the answer is yes then I would explain to them you only use the subcontractors you have a working relationship with. Otherwise, this could backfire as the subcontractor might not show, do subpar work, talk behind your back to the homeowner. In my experience I would stay away from using any homeowner to alleviate problems down the road. A quick conversation now can save headaches down the road. The fifth question I will ask are planning on getting the job permitted, this needs to be known it takes more time for the permitting process. Plans will have to drawn submitted and approved to the city before work can commence. The sixth question I will ask if a residential remodel is are you going to be living through the remodel if yes understand this will take more time to navigate the project due to answering questions and cleaning the house on a daily occurrence. I would recommend seeing if the customer would be willing to move into an Airbnb or friends for at least the demo portion of the project. If they do plan on living through the remodel add a couple hours a day to accommodate the extra time that will be required. The seventh question I would ask in a residential remodel is how old the house is to see if there is asbestos that would need to removed by a proper company. A home built before 1979 will most likely have some asbestos in the house, use a licensed company with proper insurance to dispose of the materials. If everything looks good to this point find out a little more about the client personality. If the client seems reasonable, I would bid the job. Unreasonable people can cause you more stress than its worth. These are some red flags I would look out for. Some jobs are not worth the money. Very demanding in the way you are going to perform your job- I.e., tell you how you are going to do your job- You’re the professional not them! Give you a hard time about your price- haggle with price you estimated- The price is the price! If they are a family with little money and you want to help them out is one thing, if they are trying to beat you down is another. Mention they have a lawyer-there is no need for them to bring up that they have a lawyer - Run for the hills as if the job goes south, you will be the one losing out! Tell you what the payment terms are. It’s your business you get paid how it works for your company. If you want to get paid every Friday, put it into your contract-If the clients do not agree move on it will save you frustrations If they talk bad about the last contractor, chances are they will talk bad about you. There is a reason why the contractor does not work for them anymore, unless he did subpar work this a red flag Clients are using an interior decorator that will purchasing all of the materials- The materials could be ordered incorrectly by the interior designer your company will not make the mark-up it deserves. Interior decorators usually add time to the job as well as act like your boss. Charging a little extra for the time and stress that it will entail is only fair. Clients want to purchase the materials- You are using your knowledge to buy the correct materials-The mark up on the materials keeps the doors open working for wages only pays the bills The husband and wife do not get along-You will become the mediator between the couple it will lead to taking sides a losing proposition- A drama free work place is always best! Dangling carrot-if you do this job the next one will be better-Only look at what there offering at the present moment, if its not a good fit do not take the job for a job down the road…Its not worth chasing a job that might not happen! The Art of the Sale First things first selling your company is all about presentation. In meeting your clients for the first time show up with a collared golf shirt tucked in, belt, nice jeans, and newer shoes. Have a truck that a clean, no dents scratches, preferably washed the day you are going into your meeting. Have a leather note pad that is clean no dirt or paint visible. Show up 5 minutes early, if you’re running a little late shoot them a text to let them know. Treat the situation as if were going on a first date, best foot forward. As you introduce yourself give them a warm greeting, letting them know you are very interested in the work. Find out a little about them, hobbies, where they lived, etc etc. You are going to be working with them on a daily basis its nice to know what makes them tick. Having a good working relationship from the start is key forming a solid relationship. As the conversation progresses find out who wears the pants in the family…ie who’s the final decision maker. If its fits the wife, chances it is…..then kindly let the husband know happy wife happy life when their in a stall mate on an issue. As your looking at the project throw in some suggestions of what you think would look good from past experiences, this will get their attention that you have knowledge and want what’s best for them. If you see ways to save them money in their project let them know, money is a large point of the sale keep that in mind. Mention that you’re not the least expensive contractor but you’re not the most expensive either. Your customer satisfaction is your number one goal which leads to more time spent on keeping them happy. One happy customer will lead to another, one unsatisfied customer leads to work in the future. Bring up the fact the finishing the job on time is key goal to your business, many contractors run several jobs at once causing the jobs to be finished way behind schedule. You must stand out as having integrity, good morals, and the ability to problem solve to get the job. The clients will be testing you to see if you’re a good fit as well. Keep in mind as you take your notes that you must not forget anything they mention as it will come back before the job is completed…i.e. we mentioned that to you before we started the job! Take pictures of the proposed area for work, that way you can use it to better right your estimate. Let them know you will give them a detailed outline of when the job will be completed letting them see how long each phase will take and correlate it with your payment schedule. Before you leave their house let them know when the estimate will be sent to them. MAKE SURE YOU HIT THAT DEADLINE! Once you sent the email over with estimate make sure you get confirmation that they received it. Wait at least 2 days before checking with them, hopefully they contact you first! If they want negotiate the price, let them know that it is the best price that you can manage, its not worth losing money before you start. I closed 80% of the work I estimated by being very transparent and friendly. If you come off with an attitude charge double what the going rates are you might only land 1 out of 10 jobs as well as getting the reputation of being expensive. Bidding the job Looking up industry standards on pricing is what I would go buy for pricing. If you google the coat of any installation there will be a cost range for everything. Looking at the cost ranging from high to low I would tend to be in the middle. Some items might be low on the internet if this is the case use your best judgment not to lose money. Closing sales is key to success and keep the doors open for business. Being in the middle on pricing is key as most customers shy away from contractors that are extremely low or high on the price range. I tend not bid out hourly as wages do not pay for retirement. Bidding is better as customers no the exact price of the cost of construction. It also keeps the job moving quicker as time and material contractors take longer to complete projects…Thus costing the client more money and valuable time they could spend in their house. Using a Contract Using a detailed estimate tied to a contract covers your butt in 99% of the time. Having a piece of mind that every aspect of the job is covered in the estimate and contract protects both your company and the client. Key terms to include in your estimate/contract are. Have a schedule on excel showing the start dates and dates of each trade this will show the customer you are organized with time lines. If not written in the detailed in the estimate the item is excluded- This ensures if its not written down its not included. TBD- To be Determined- A phrase on a line item that has yet to had final decision of products or service needed. -The pricing will follow the decisions to be finalized Give out what your written warranty will be for parts and labor this changes state to state. If the homeowner provides the product than no warranty will be given on that particular item. In the contract have a start date and end date with the verbiage subject to change due to weather, product delivery, change orders Have a progress payment schedule to ensure the client understands when funding will be expected-Including if not payment is rendered service to the project will stop. Have written terms of how change orders will be charged-cost plus 20% or a set fee Make sure in your contract that arbitration is required versus going to court- This will save lawyer fees and going to court Many contracts can be found online and each state requires different contracts
Finding leads Finding leads is easy with the right network of people. I personally do not find working for friends or family members a good fit. Relationships get strained when money is involved, causing undue stress for both parties. I have listed a couple of ways to build a network or find work using the internet. Get in contact with realtor’s- Realtors have a big client base of homeowners who need work done Contact local Architects to see if they are working with any general contractors Leave some business cards at your local materials suppliers-Doowindow/lumber-many times clients will ask salesman for a referral. Join a business networking group- BNI is one of many Join a internet website lead generation company- Houzz, Angie’s List, Home Advisor, thumbtack, Yelp run an ad on craigslist Use a marketing company to market your website-This could become costly with little results Create a Facebook business page Create a Yelp business page
Building your subcontractor base Having 2 subcontractors for every trade, gives you the flexibility of completing jobs on time if the one the subcontractors is too busy at the time you need their service. Your subcontractors are the face of your business, choose owner run companies that are professional. Check to make sure there license are up to date..ie workman’s comp, liability insurance, state license. Choosing subcontractors with lettered vans, logoed t-shirts is s key to looking professional in the clients’ eyes. In the past I have gotten a lot of subcontractors for material supply shops, stopping by jobsites, researching the internet using Yelp, Home Advisor, etc etc. Once you get one good subcontractor ask them if they know any other trades they would recommend. One good subcontractor leads to another in most cases. The key to having a good group of subcontractors is to let them know that you are there to get help them get the job done. They do work for you but without them you are nothing…keep that in mind! Make them aware a clean jobsite is required at the end of everyday to ensure the proper safety for all parties including theirs! Over the years I have referred a lot of companies work when there is only 1 trade needed. Referring work to subcontractors is a good way to get top priority when you have work that needs to be completed ASAP. Timing is everything in times of emergency having a good group of subcontractors will make your business run smoothly. Pay your subcontractors immediately after performing work, this will make them feel appreciated! A happy subcontractor is one that will gladly go the extra mile for you knowing that there not just a number to your business! Buying lunch once a week for the jobsite is always a good token of appreciation!
Supervising In supervising any jobsite its key to monitor everything from materials on hand, weather, vehicle parking (if applicable), jobsite safety, and subcontractors’ workmanship. If you hired a professional there should be little supervision in the work being performed, on rare occasions a new hire might need some mentoring to get the results completed correctly. If you see a problem with there work address it with the worker directly, no need to call his boss…. building repour with the worker letting him know you got his back goes miles down the road! Checking in on the job first in the morning to answer any questions or changes that need to be conveyed and once in the afternoon to make sure all work be completed is done per construction industry standards. A job that is run blindly will have many more issues than one that is watched over. I have seen many jobs with no site supervision, leading to subpar quality work as well as safety hazards. Its better to be like an eagle than cluck like a turkey!
Working with the City/Inspectors On permitted jobs the city and site inspector will be a large part of how smoothly the job runs. Each phase of construction has an inspection allowing for the project to continue. Make sure your subcontractors are aware that the project is inspected before starting the job. The best way to stay on his good side is to provide a clean jobsite and having the job built to the highest standards possible. When having the site inspected be courteous to the inspector asking any questions or concerns you have with the work during the job. Being completely transparent will save you aggravation of problems down the road. The more he trust you the better if you seem sneaky or rude he will make your life a living nightmare! Many inspectors will have an attitude towards you….I suggest keeping quiet and doing what ever he wants….he’s the boss no need to get in a pissing match you will not win at. How to deal with irate customer Stay calm during any argument with an irate customer. Never raise your voice or show that you are bothered by their disgruntled behavior. If the customer is trying to get more from you than agreed upon stand your ground. Worst case scenario is you walk from the job, which in the long run be more of a loss for the client. I have only run into a couple of these clients; they are unreasonable and not worth losing sleep over a few dollars. Its best to terminate the relationship as it would be my best guess that a referral from this customer would not be one you wanted anyway. If you feel it was just a miscommunication on your end, take reasonability and remedy the problem. Taking accountability for your mistake will go a far way in their eyes and on future issues that arise. Prepping the homeowner pre-construction Before starting the job, it very important to give the homeowners a warning of what will happen during the construction process.
  1. All furniture in the proposed working area must be moved- I would recommend having the clients take care of this to limit the risk of damage to their belongings.
  2. There will be dust that will be in the house up to 3 months after construction-I would recommend hiring a construction cleaning company at the end of the job even so after it is cleaned dust will be present months after words.
  3. There will be conflicts between you in the homeowner at some course of the job. - You will do your best to eliminate them as quickly as they arise-i.e. material damages, miscommunication, job delays
  4. All decisions on materials must be made before the start of the job- this will eliminate job stoppage due to materials not being on site.
  5. All materials will be on site before commencement of job-
  6. Payment structures must be made per contract otherwise job will stop until payment rendered
  7. Cars are to be moved out of the driveway- Ensures ease of loading and unloading of materials/tools
  8. Give the specific hours that workers will be present- i.e. 7-3:30
  9. Determine what areas are allowed to be used as staging for tools/materials
  10. If animals are present in the home that they put outside or in a room during the day
  11. All valuables in the house are locked in safe
  12. Ask if using client’s household bathroom is okay or to bring in Porter Potty
  13. Being transparent as possible is key to keeping a great relationship with your client!
During Construction During construction it is key to take detailed photos to eliminate any damages that were not caused by the construction process. I would also make a video to ensure all areas are included. All subcontractors should also take progress pictures to ensure if problems arise in the future, they will not be responsible for any work that they did not perform. Keep an on-going log of progress to the homeowners and share the pictures for there records. This will keep homeowners excited of the progress being made. When the house is gutted to the studs it is important to have construction photos showing where all utilities are run in the walls or sub floor. If there is a problem in the future there will photos showing all utility locations. Protect all flooring with plywood or floor protective. I also like to protect front door and tarp all areas where subcontractors are to be working. Make sure to cover any chandeliers/furniture/doorways with plastic to eliminate dust. Ask the homeowners if they have any concerns that they could think of. We’re all human and possibly a detail was missed! Post Construction Phase If the project went smoothly appreciation should be shown to the customer. Find out if the husband likes a particular type of liquor. Bring the wife a bouquet of flowers. Send a Christmas card to the family letting how much you appreciated the work. You know you have done a good job if they tell you they will refer you to their friends. The best compliment you could receive is a good referral. In Summary Try to find a knitch in the market, I found kitchens to be a great remodel projects. Bathrooms are tough as they are small, expensive with little profit margin with every trade involved. Windows/doors are also another great knitch as they can be installed quickly. There are so many different remodeling items that can be stream lined to make the selling installing process flawless. Once the core group subcontractors are in place the job almost runs itself. Every day is a learning experience with new materials or methods in construction. Keeping up with codes, materials, fluctuating labor and material cost is a job within itself. Anyone can be a contractor with the right mindset.

The Ultimate Halo Infinite Review - Spartan Holding Sidekick Sprinting

GAMEPLAY - 97/100

Halo Infinite’s multiplayer scene started off very rough and lacked a lot of mode choices at launch. When it was released, only four playlists were available. Ranked Arena, Big Team Battle, Quick Play, and Bot Bootcamp. Since the backlash, the game has been updated with a wide variety of modes to choose from, many of which are classic game modes like Fiesta, Swat, and Team Snipers. All of the modes are fun and provide different ways to utilize many of the new abilities and weapons in many ways. Each of the playlists has straightforward and concise objectives, like Oddball, where you simply gain control of the Oddball and defend the carrier while scoring points by holding the ball and preventing enemies from taking it from you. The maps have amazing layouts and make for a level playing field for each team.
The tide of the match can be turned by controlling and effectively using Power Weapons like the immensely powerful M41 SPNKR Rocket Launcher or the ever-deadly and accurate S7 Sniper. New weapons like the Cindershot or Stalker Rifle provide different advantages depending on your positioning, effectiveness, and understanding of the gun and its strengths. The maps have their own set of weapon pickups like the S7 Sniper. Each weapon available in the matches is well-balanced and can play to their strengths well enough to make them serve their purpose. The loadout guns in multiplayer have evolved from originally being the Battle Rifle and the Assault Rifle to eventually including the Bandit and Bandit EVO. Each fight comes down to who can land their shots better while maneuvering and which team can work together the best to control key areas for an advantage. Tactical abilities, such as the Repulsor, Threat Sensor, Grappleshot, Shroud Screen, and more, make a comeback. Power Equipment, such as the Overshield and Active Camo, also returns to Infinite. Each of these abilities and pieces of equipment makes fights more than just getting a powerful gun. It requires more coordination with your team to effectively use the equipment to its full potential, especially in ranked playlists.
Ranked play in Halo Infinite is as cutthroat as ever and remains highly competitive and team-focused. The ranks you gain while playing are fun to grind for with a team, but playing solo can be rough, especially if there’s no communication between players. Climbing the ranks is good fun and offers a great opportunity to see what the competitive side of Halo is like, considering how accessible the modes are.
Armor Cores appeared for the first time in the series as cosmetic sets of armor from both previous Halo games and the lore. The cores are unlocked through a battle pass with a variety of challenges available that can help you progress quickly. Customization options that fall in line with the season's theme are also available on these battle passes. The classic Mk IV armor core made a return in January 2024 and was the subject of much excitement since it’s a fan favorite look. Another widespread request from the fanbase was to be able to interchange helmets and coatings across armor cores. It eventually came to fruition and made for a resounding wave of approval from the community.
Event passes also make a debut in the game with a limited-time battle pass that often has its own cosmetics. For example, the ‘Fracture: Tenrai’ event had a Samurai-themed armor core that was no longer available after the event was over. It adds a sense of diversity to these limited-time cosmetics and rewards the more consistent players with cosmetics deserving of their time.
New modes are often on the horizon for Infinite thanks to 343’s desire to keep the game alive and well, and Season Five was no different. A mode initially introduced in Halo 4 known as Extraction was added with the release of Season Five: Reckoning. This mode revolves around a data extractor that is planted in a designated area on the map. Your team must then defend or convert the extractor until enough time has passed to earn a point toward the team's score limit of four. New modes often appear alongside the limited-time events that come with the seasons. For example, in Season Two: Lone Wolves, there was a battle-royale style mode called Last Spartan Standing that would pit you against 23 other players on Big Team Battle maps with five respawns and a pistol as you fight to be triumphant against your enemies. Some of the seasonal modes become permanent, like the long-awaited Infection mode that was released during Season Four.
FORGE CUSTOM
The classic Forge map editor was highly requested upon Halo Infinite’s launch, and it’s safe to say that 343 delivered. The mode has everything that previous forge modes included, like pre-built structures, components to make battlegrounds, and the ability to build to your heart's content. Infinite Forge introduced AI to the mode, meaning that it’s now possible to create battles and scenarios for use in Custom Games. Since custom maps come from the Forge mode, the two often go hand in hand with each other. There are many maps that take advantage of this and have their own unique modes, including Firefight. From a frozen Banished supercarrier to the last level of Halo: Reach, there is tons of variety for map choices. The Custom Games browser from Halo 5 and Master Chief Collection makes a return and makes a ton of fun modes available to be played on these community-made maps.

FIRST-PERSON SHOOTER - 85/100

Halo Infinite doesn’t deviate from the standard First Person Shooter formula in any way that is noteworthy. However, while lacking innovation, Infinite excels at sticking to what the series is known for and does the genre justice by retaining responsive and fun gameplay mechanics. At its core, Halo Infinite’s gunplay has some of the best-feeling weapons and satisfying kills in recent times. The gameplay is much faster-paced than the classic titles, but it manages to stay true to its original identity. The gameplay sets the marker high for the next installment and reminds fps developers that it’s okay to stick with what works as long as it's done well and is still fun to play.

GRAPHICS ART DIRECTION - 95/100

Graphics in gaming never seem to stop improving, and Halo Infinite is determined to make sure it’s not left behind. In the multiplayer scene, we get a good look at our Spartans via the Armor Hall, which showcases the various cosmetic pieces that can be equipped. The gear we don is sleek, with high-resolution textures over the Spartan armor. It’s easy to see the smaller details of the armor when zooming in, down to the smallest of buckles and straps. When in the multiplayer maps, the amount of time is put into the pieces that make up the battlegrounds. The new Slipspace engine also allows for an enhanced atmosphere that makes it easy to become lost in the map's details. This atmosphere is further strengthened by a more than impressive lighting system that includes ray-tracing. Despite lacking the feature at launch, the addition of ray-tracing gave Halo Infinite’s maps even further depth and detail, as well as a feeling of realism. These are just a few of the ways Infinite outpaces the prior installments graphically.
The art direction of Halo Infinite heads in a more detailed and futuristic design that further expands on what previous games set out to accomplish. Sprawling forerunner complexes that dominate parts of multiplayer maps lend to the futuristic aesthetic the series is well known for. The forerunner buildings that makeup part of multiple maps are both mysterious and beautiful in design. Maps like Catalyst see us inside one of the Forerunner facilities. It retains the beauty of many other Forerunner facilities while providing a unique perspective on what these mysterious buildings may contain. The primary attraction of Catalyst is the large midsection of the map, which contains a large bridge of Hardlight above a chasm and a narrow walkway going in the opposite direction. Around the sides are the spawn areas and small corridors to fight through. Upon exiting the corridors into the midsection, you’ll see the center of the map surrounded by two large platformed areas built into the mountain housing the map. The futuristic design and features of maps like this keep it interesting and always a fun time to fight on. This map is one of the best highlights of Halo Infinite’s beautiful architecture and level design.

MUSIC AUDIO - 90/100

Having good sound design for firearms is an integral part of a First-Person Shooter. After all, the most common sound you’ll be hearing is gunfire from enemies as well as your own weapons. The guns in the game all have a unique sound that makes them each feel at home in the universe. Whether it’s the boom from the M41 Spnkr, the rapid fire of an Assault Rifle, or a single shot from the all-powerful S7 Sniper, each of these weapons and more have their own unique sound signature. With these sound cues, it’s easy to differentiate the guns and gauge how much of a threat they pose to you. Aside from gunfire, melee combat is a very common occurrence in Halo multiplayer. The sounds of hitting another player and promptly causing them to crumple into a ball of broken bones are very satisfying in regards to audio.
The vehicles of Big Team Battle carry unique sounds and have their own identities, just like the weapons. Hearing the powerful engine of a Warthog approaching has become synonymous with either getting run over or backup finally arriving during a long fight. Sounds like that have become so iconic within the series and have made Halo easily recognizable in the audio aspect.
Gareth Coker is the mastermind behind the awesome music that can be heard during matches and in the menus. The soundtracks offer a sense of nostalgia while getting your adrenaline pumping and hyping you up for a fight. The songs intensify the battles you’ll find yourself in with their exhilarating melodies while managing to both reimagine and pay homage to the original games. Familiar themes and strings can be heard in the music but are excellently redone with a new flare that keeps them refreshing.

REPLAYABILITY - 100/100

Halo Infinite was once far from replayable due to the lack of modes available at launch. Since then, modes like Infection, BTB Heavies, and Swat (now called Tactical Slayer) have made their debuts in the game. The new modes have made the multiplayer scene reminiscent of older Halo titles in the best way possible. You’ll find plenty of fun playing solo, but when queued up with friends, it becomes a new level of enjoyment that is comparable to the golden days of Halo 3. Each mode brings its own set of fun experiences and possibilities that leave you coming back for more. It’s very apparent that 343 Industries has taken the feedback to heart and has implemented a slew of updates addressing the backlash.

FUN FACTOR - 95/100

Halo Infinite is one of the most fun Halo games to date, taking into consideration its excellent gameplay and game modes. During your time in battle, you’re bound to make some great memories whether you play alongside friends or solo queue. The community is engaging and has a very welcoming atmosphere despite the competitive nature of the games, which sometimes get rowdy but just add to the experience. The game succeeds at taking all of its gameplay elements and bringing them together for a fulfilling and cohesive experience. From the weapons to the abilities and maps, Halo Infinite, in its current state, manages to deliver everything we expect out of a modern Halo title. The game has amazing potential going forward, especially since the universe is so expansive and has so much to offer.

CREATIVE REVIEW

Since the beta of Halo Infinite way back in 2021, I have been smitten. The game just felt right to me, and I wasn’t the only one looking forward to playing the full thing upon launch. Every day, my friends and I would get on and grind until our play time was up. We usually didn’t know what to play afterward. It filled the void left by Halo 5 multiplayer that we desperately wished for more of. Upon release day, I was as disappointed as ever. It was half-baked and debatably just as disappointing as Cyberpunk 2077 at launch. The game had a long road ahead of it, but I was there for the whole ride out of nothing but faith and a little bit of bias.
To kick things off, Halo Infinite is great in its current state; let me get that established off the bat. When it dropped, it was pretty bad in terms of the lack of content. However, it has come a long way since then. The game has received a new coat of paint and some excellent polish on top to give it the extra shine it deserves. It has a great selection of modes, each of which is its own barrel of fun, both solo or with friends. For example, Team Slayer is the classic we all know and love. Spawn in, kill the enemy team until your team hits 50 kills, leave the match, and get ready for the next one. It's so simple yet so fun to do, especially when it’s not one of the only four game modes available. Variety is the spice of life, after all. Now, let’s look at a fan favorite: Infection. I can’t tell you in words how much fun I had back on Halo: Reach infection as a wee lad. You just had to be there. Halo Infinite is a lot like Reach in the sense that Infection is one of the most fun modes in a game since Black Ops 2 Zombies. It’s a blast running for your life and hoping to run into a teammate who can save you while eight infected players chase you down. It’s seriously a great time, as with many of the other modes we see in Infinite, like my personal favorite, Big Team Battle.
Big Team Battle is the definitive Halo multiplayer experience, in my opinion, since it lets you experience everything the game has to offer while not getting stale with its formula. So definitive that it deserves its own section. BTB sees teams of eight players duke it out on a large map while completing objectives and fighting for power weapons. The objectives can be things like Slayer, where, like Team Slayer, you spawn in and fight to reach the score limit. The main difference is that BTB has vehicles and more powerful weapons to grab since the teams are larger. It’s a great way to practice if you’re new to Halo since your deaths aren’t as impactful to the team. There are also more targets to practice on. Total Control is the best of the BTB modes since it’s objective-based. In Total Control, matches go on for much longer since scoring is more difficult than in other modes. To score, your team must control all three of the marked areas to score while defending from the other team who’s attempting to do the same. The first to three points wins. I can’t help but come back for more Big Team Battle when I get on Infinite. It doesn’t quite have the variety of modes that Halo 5 had, but it still provides a fantastic experience that is extremely fun to play.
Now that I’m done fangirling over Big Team Battle, let’s talk gunplay, which is the biggest thing in Halo. Human-made weapons like the Assault Rifle and Battle Rifle feel the best out of the entire series. As an Assault Rifle enthusiast, I remember trying to use the AR in Halo 5, only to get outdone by a Magnum Pistol. Halo 5 had a clearly defined meta, while Infinite attempted to do away with the whole meta thing. It feels like every gun is on an even playing field in terms of practicality when it comes to the base loadouts. Power weapons reign supreme, as usual. The S7 Sniper, M41 Spnkr, and Cindershot are all powerful enough to make them worth fighting for. All of the guns feel amazing, and none are inherently bad except for the Plasma Pistol, but is that really a surprise? It’s been like that since Combat Evolved, to no one’s surprise. The guns also have some great sounds and recoil patterns, which makes them enjoyable to use. The devs even added the DMR, which is now known as the Bandit. I’ve gotta say, it’s incredibly fun to use and extremely satisfying when you manage to land some headshots.
The map selection went from ok to great in a matter of months. Maps like Streets, Catalyst, and Aquarius are personal favorites from the 4v4 map pool, while Deadlock, Breaker, and Highpower are the best of the BTB maps. Each of these maps has an identity that sets it apart from the rest of the picks. Streets are reminiscent of New Mombasa from Halo 3: ODST, while Highpower gives off the feeling of playing on Forge World from Halo: Reach. Despite being similar to past maps, these new additions set themselves apart from the originals by utilizing atmospheric lighting and high-resolution textures to make an immersive experience you can get lost in when you’re not fighting for your life. The developers likely knew that the map's details would be lost among the gameplay and fighting, but when you take a moment to appreciate it, you can see that a lot of love was put into the designs. That’s what helps make Halo Infinite so enjoyable despite its past.
A humble comeback story mixed with community feedback and the unending dedication of the devs of 343 shaped Halo Infinite into a beast of its own. Seriously, this game is one of if not my favorite Halo games since it’s redeemed itself, and I cannot recommend it enough. The game’s beginning was very rough, and many laughed at its lack of enjoyable experiences, but 343 kept pushing. 343 saw the negativity and venomous response their creation had incurred, and yet they kept developing the game. In a way, this is my thank you to 343 for not giving up on a game we’d been waiting years for and for doing great work on a series that many of us grew up with. It’s plain to see that the team built Halo Infinite with love and sought to create something we’d remember as fondly as the Bungie era. There are bound to be those of us who refuse to revisit Infinite because of its botched origins, but I encourage you to give it another shot if you haven’t recently. It’s not perfect, but it’s a ton of fun when you approach with an open mind. It’s not the same as Bungie’s era of Halo by any means. However, its differences signify its new identity as one that is true to its beginnings but also changing to bring in new fans. For that, I think 343 Industries did a fantastic job with Halo Infinite’s redemption. Being that it’s one of the most played games on Xbox at the moment, I’d say I’m not the only one who thinks that.

SCORE SUMMARY - 94/100

Halo Infinite’s multiplayer is done correctly by the book. Since its rough launch, it has been very clear that 343 took the feedback, gripes, and technical issues and turned it 180 degrees. The gameplay is fun, engaging, and bound to keep your head on a swivel. The graphics and optimization for the game are top notch and add so much to the enjoyability of the game. It’s one thing to have something beautiful to look at, but when it’s also running and looking great on older hardware, that’s when you know you have something great. In terms of replayability, it's just as easy to revisit as any of the old Halo titles. Everything comes together seamlessly, and that’s why it’s a great entry into the series. It stands up to the standards of the original trilogy.

Summary of President Charles Edward Merriam's First Term (May 4th, 1948 - February 10th, 1949) A House Divided Alternate Elections
Charles Edward Merriam, the 37th President of the United States, Official Presidential Portrait
The Poisoned Chalice
Upon taking the presidential oath of office after the resignation of President Alvin York, Charles Edward Merriam found himself at the helm of a rudderless ship. Civil unrest was at an all-time high due to mass protests against York’s preemptive nuclear strike and large-scale labor strikes, much of the cabinet had been left vacant by a wave of resignations following York’s controversial decision not to consult his own advisors on the decision, and an already uneasy economy had been thrown into chaos by the total obliteration of a major trading partner. Even the sky itself had visibly darkened while global temperatures dropped, bringing about cries of the end times being visited upon Earth for man’s folly. In this moment of national crisis, Merriam took to the airwaves with a radio address to the American people asking them to unite with him in a national effort for the first 100 days of his presidency to right the course of the country amidst the national crisis.
Moving with alacrity to fill the vacancies within his cabinet and bring his administration into full gear, Merriam leaned upon his network of academic contacts to appoint a ring of economic, industrial, and social science experts — Jacob Viner, Bessie Louise Pierce, George W. Taylor, and Leo Wolman — into several key cabinet positions. Similarly, rather than appoint a political operative as his Secretary of State or War, he instead chose to elevate career diplomat and acting Secretary of State Joseph Grew into his position permanently while promoting War Department General Counsel William Marbury Jr. to be Secretary of War. Finding both Secretary of the Navy James V. Forrestal and Secretary of Agriculture John Marvin Jones to be highly competent and sufficiently disentangled from the chaos of the York administration, Merriam requested that the pair remain in their positions. However, Postmaster General Thomas Perkins Henderson would not be so lucky, as Merriam distrusted his close ties to President York and felt the office was wracked by cronyism, thus requesting his immediate resignation to be replaced with former Louisiana Governor and highly regarded reformist Sam H. Jones. To round out his cabinet, Merriam appointed California Governor Earl Warren as his Attorney General due to Warren’s wealth of experience in suppressing syndicalist insurrectionists in his home state, as well as Delaware Senator and businessman J. Allen Frear to manage the Department of the Interior with an eye towards economizing a bloated department.

Calming a Roiling Sea
Believing that anxiety surrounding a national economy plagued by boundless problems was at the root of the national malaise that might yet inspire a resurgence of syndicalism, Merriam quickly moved to restore confidence for both consumers and businesses. As a first step to move past the combative relationships that President Hughes and York held with organized labor, Merriam invited newly minted American Federation of Labor President George Meany for a symbolic meeting to discuss labor issues and establish an informal political alliance to raise wages and working standards as a means to settle the persistent labor unrest. Thus, President Merriam and his Secretary of Labor George W. Taylor began applying the National Labor Arbitration Act to settle hundreds of strikes across the country resulting in a moderate nationwide increase in wage levels and the proliferation of employer-provided healthcare as a commonly provided benefit. Taylor even proved successful in earning the begrudging respect of Congress of Industrial Organizations President Walter Reuther’s respect despite the organization’s more explicitly confrontational approach to industrial relations.
Despite this success in the application of labor arbitration, Merriam’s ambition of comprehensive legislation to establish a formal system of corporatist economic structures was repeatedly frustrated by the inability to secure enough bipartisan support in the House of Representatives to pass several successive iterations of his proposals. Yet as a longtime proponent of executive power, Merriam was not entirely thwarted by this setback and notably issued an Executive Order forming the Office of National Research headed by MIT President Karl T. Compton and complemented by a number of figures in both the natural and social sciences to direct national research efforts towards answering pressing questions of the new atomic age. Perhaps the most significant of its achievements were the pioneering of new sanitation, public health, and antibiotic techniques to finally stamp out the bubonic plague epidemic that had persisted since the initial Japanese bioweapon attack. Furthermore, Speaker of the House Wright Patman was successful in passing a budget through the House substantially scaling back wartime spending and taxation in light of the transition of the United States military from a combat force to an occupation force abroad. Anticipating a corresponding decrease in inflation, Merriam worked with his Secretary of Commerce Leo Wolman to begin the process of relieving wartime price controls that had remained in place throughout the York administration while encouraging the development of private industrial codes of conduct for businesses to self-regulate prices.

Sewing A Tattered World
America was not the only country suffering in the aftermath of the Second World War. The decade-long war had wreaked havoc upon the entire world and left entire nations virtually leveled by bombs and depleted of their resources. American efforts at international reconstruction had been haphazard and largely left in the hands of private charities during the York administration, much to the consternation of its allies and the occupied peoples. Thus, out of a mixture of humanitarian reasons, a desire to restore America’s international reputation, and a calculation that such destruction could breed communist movements such as the syndicalist revolt that had embroiled the United States, Secretary of State Joseph Grew proposed a much more ambitious plan that would soon bear his name. With the strong support of President Merriam, Congress earmarked a staggering $15 billion with wide bipartisan support to be distributed to European governments for necessary imports of food and basic materials from the United States as well as for industrial investments to rebuild the European economy. An ancillary fund was likewise also established to support the reconstruction of China, which had been ravaged by brutal warfare with Imperial Japan. As a committed supporter of free trade, President Merriam also used the leverage of the Grew Plan to compel the recipients of the funding to lower trade barriers between one another and with the United States in order to stimulate international trade. The sole major holdout would be the United Kingdom, where Prime Minister Aneurin Bevan remained committed to an autarkic system of steep trade barriers outside the Imperial system since the country had suffered far less damage than its peers in the Second World War.
Another guiding principle of President Merriam’s approach to international reconstruction would be a wide-ranging program of technical assistance. With the country’s decades-long commitment to widely available public education and a sophisticated network of universities engaged in industrial research, the American economy had come to be regarded as the most technologically advanced in the entire world. Already under President Dewey, the United States had begun programs of sharing its technical expertise in production methods and industrial organization to China and the countries of Latin America. Thus, Merriam’s formalization of an Office for Technical Assistance under the Department of State was an extension of an already well-established practice. With support from personnel and agencies in the Departments of Labor and Commerce, the Office of Technical Assistance undertook a wide-ranging and sophisticated statistical analysis of European industries to identify weaknesses in productivity while arranging for large-scale observation visits by European industrial leaders as well as the collation and distribution of technical literature in order to disseminate best practices across continents. Following the initial success of the program in Europe over the first months of his term, Merriam proceeded with an extension of the program to developing nations in the Middle East and South Asia in order to modernize their economies as well.

Year Without Summer
While atomic weapons had been deployed several times throughout the Second World War to destroy French, Russian, and Japanese cities, they had never been used on the scale ordered by President Alvin York to destroy the German Empire. As a result of the simultaneous destruction of dozens of German cities in fiery infernos, the atmosphere of the planet itself became choked by a layer of ash and soot that demonstrably lowered global temperatures in the following months. With the effect coined as a “nuclear winter” by British chemist Samuel Glasstone, a world food supply already challenged by the disruptions of war experienced a dramatic shortfall in agricultural production sending many war-ravaged areas teetering into famine. However, this presented a unique opportunity for the United States, which had for decades struggled with chronic overproduction of agricultural products causing dim economic prospects for the nation’s farmers. Now, there was a ready market for the surplus in the United States that persisted even through the nuclear winter.
Though European governments were already using their Grew Plan funds to import American food products in large amounts, Secretary of Agriculture John Marvin Jones was determined to employ the powers of the federal government in assistance of this shift. Backed by a series of executive orders from President Merriam, Jones vastly expanded the neglected Populist-era Sub-Treasury system to grant easy credit and storage solutions to farmers who lacked sufficient capital to take advantage of the vastly increased demand for their product while also using wartime legislation to purchase eroded land for its rehabilitation and resale for food production by government experts. Much like the rest of the executive branch, at Merriam’s direction the Department of Agriculture also leaned into partnerships with dozens of agricultural colleges spread throughout the United States to collect and publish a corpus of literature on improved farming practices and fertilizer production techniques to further stimulate production.

New World Order
Having earned widespread popularity among the American public for his statesmanship at home and thus leaving the November elections with a decisive popular mandate, Merriam turned to the pressing issue of foreign affairs in the latter half of his term. In the chaos of the Second World War and its immediate aftermath, the powers of the Grand Alliance had failed to conclusively agree on the structures of the post-war world. Even after the destruction of the German Empire, which had been the largest obstacle in the effort to conclude new international agreements, debate raged on what form these would take as the world federalist movement took root across the globe. In order to lay the foundation of future global cooperation, Merriam began by reviving the institutions of the Hague Treaty that had been rendered inoperative by the withdrawal of participation by several countries and subsequent outbreak of the Second World War. While the Permanent Court of International Arbitration would be restored largely unchanged from its original construction, the International Monetary Fund would be greatly transformed due to President Merriam’s influential support for John Maynard Keynes’s proposal to formulate a supranational currency called “bancor” to be the unit of account for an International Clearing Union tasked with regulating international trade.
While many nationalists and isolationists decried Merriam’s move towards the internationalization of monetary policy, the circle of Atlanticists within the party led by Vice President Edward J. Meeman was urging him to go even further towards world government. Compelled by a promise made to the Atlanticist faction during his party’s National Convention, President Merriam authorized the summoning of an international conference to discuss the concept of an Atlantic Union between the western democratic countries of the world. However, where many expected that Merriam might appoint a coterie of apathetic diplomats to undermine the movement, the President instead shockingly sent a delegation filled with committed Atlanticists led by New York Senator Grenville Clark, Tennessee Senator Estes Kefauver, and the proposal’s first author Clarence Streit to Brussels for the conference, much to the outrage of opponents of world federalism within his party. After weeks spent deliberating the minutiae of the Atlantic Union, the conference emerged just before the holiday season with a proposed constitution and hundreds of pages of documentation surrounding the historical precedents and contemporary reasoning behind the proposal to electrify the debate surrounding a world government.

God’s Instrument or War Criminal?
The most controversial question hanging over the term of President Charles Edward Merriam was the fate of former President Alvin York. To many Americans, York had committed a crime against humanity comparable to those against which they had fought against for a decade and the incident ignited a debate surrounding presidential authority to deploy nuclear weapons. Throughout the initial months of his presidency, Merriam dodged questions surrounding the President and declined to make substantial public comment aside from occasional suggestions that the President had sole command over the United States military. At Merriam’s private urging, Speaker of the House Wright Patman also squashed suggestions that a President could still be impeached after leaving office. Likewise, Merriam directed the Justice Department not to open a federal prosecution against York and thus leaving the ailing former President’s case in legal limbo. Speaking out more strongly after his successful reelection campaign, Merriam clarified that while he found the act personally abhorrent it remained a legal exercise of the President’s powers as commander-in-chief and that as the victims were nationals of another country there was no basis for either a prosecution or a pardon in the name of crimes against the United States.
Beyond just the conduct of the President himself, the atomic bombing of Germany brought with it new concern around the governance of nuclear weapons. Believing that tight-lipped military control over nuclear weapons under wartime authority was a large factor in York’s ability to unilaterally strike Germany, the Senate’s sole independent Brien McMahon led the charge to place nuclear weapons and energy development under the control of an independent civilian commission appointed by both the President and the legislative officers. Though his bill died in committee, it inspired the Federalist Reform Party to counter with their own bill introduced by Kentucky Senator Andrew J. May replacing McMahon’s proposed commission with a board to be dominated by military officers exclusively appointed by the President. While the Federalist Reform majority in the Senate quickly passed the May bill over an attempted filibuster by McMahon, the bill came to a screeching halt in the House of Representatives where the opposition parties unified to fiercely oppose its passage. With Congress at an impasse, President Merriam issued executive orders continuing the status quo of the wartime project board that had been initiated by President Howard Hughes.

Note: Not strictly bound by Merriam’s term, the following sections are meant to summarize the state of the world after the conclusion of the Second World War.
The Red Stars of Europe
Throughout the decade-spanning Second World War, the United Kingdom had been under the leadership of Conservative Prime Minister Duff Cooper. In order to maintain control against the irascible anti-war opposition led by Labour’s Oswald Mosley, Cooper had resorted to the royal authority of King Edward VIII to unilaterally bring the country into the war and cancel elections throughout its duration. While he had been successful in prosecuting the war to victory and securing the downfall of Mosley’s control over the Labour Party, when Cooper was finally forced to call elections at the war’s end he found voters profoundly unsympathetic to his accomplishments and his Tory government was defeated in a staggering landslide by the Labour Party. Thus, King Edward was reluctantly forced to appoint the Labour Party leader, Aneurin “Nye” Bevan, as the Prime Minister of the country. As an ally to former party leader Oswald Mosley, Bevan quickly embarked on the domestic implementation of the “Mosley Memorandum” to nationalize wide stretches of the British economy while also pursuing a massive expansion of the British welfare state. Following the atomic bombing of the German Empire, Bevan forcefully attacked the wanton use of weapons of mass destruction in a surprise attack and relations remained frosty even after York’s resignation as President Merriam cut off the United Kingdom from any knowledge sharing regarding nuclear power and weaponry.
Yet even the radicalism of Nye Bevan paled in comparison to that of the Spanish Republic, where a blossoming social and economic revolution was years underway. Following the victory of the leftist Republic against Nationalist forces in the country’s civil war, thanks in no small part to the decisive support of President Frank J. Hayes, agriculture was rapidly collectivized by the Spanish government while a combination of state support and syndicalist initiative led to over 75% of the industrial economy being brought under worker control. Taking inspiration from the writings and political efforts of American President John Dewey, the Spanish also imported many of his principles of progressive child-centric education while undertaking the community construction of centers of adult learning woven into forums of political debate. However, standing in stark contrast to the system of government on the mainland would be the so-called “Spanish State” existing in Spain’s African colonies. With their heavy conservative military presence, the colonies had formed a powerbase for the Spanish Nationalists and thus served as a natural place of refuge after their defeat in the war, while the socialist Republican government held little interest in reconquering a system of colonies that it found morally repugnant. Thus, the colonies became the host of a rival government and ruthless colonial state that came under the leadership of Falangist Agustin Aznar after he successfully orchestrated the murder of his political rivals to become the Jefe Nacional.

Integralism Lives?
After the surrenders of the Kingdoms of France and Italy during the Second World War, the Allied powers were too pressed for manpower in their colossal struggle against Russia and Japan in the East to administer a full military occupation. Thus, instead the administration of Howard Hughes accepted the continuation of their governments so long as they cooperated with American occupation authorities. As a result, Italian Integralism and its monarchy would continue under the auspices of General Pietro Badoglio who was vested by King Victor Emmanuel III and the Grand Council of Fascism as Italy’s new prime minister after the downfall of Benito Mussolini. However, Badoglio’s position would become increasingly unstable after the large-scale effort of the German Empire to fund and arm leftist Italian insurgents and increasingly dependent upon the United States occupation forces for support to avert their overthrow. While France would likewise retain its newly crowned King Henri VI, his political strategy would be markedly different from that of the Italians. Believing that the monarchist right would have no choice but to support him, Henri appointed socialist Vincent Auriol as his Prime Minister and issued a new liberal constitution to endear the political left to him as well. Final peace treaties with both countries, forced to be renegotiated after the destruction of the German Empire, would not yet be concluded by the end of President Merriam’s first term though the recognition of separatist movements in Brittany and Corsica was viewed as an implicit precondition by the American government.
As the political and military leadership of the German Empire had been devastated by the atomic bombings, the continuance of the Kaiserreich was not only seen as undesirable by President Alvin York but also simply impractical. Although York would not be able to oversee the country past its initial occupation, President Merriam held much the same opinion and negotiated the de jure abolition of the German Empire alongside the British and divided the country into two zones of occupation. Though relying on the expertise of the limited number of German experts who were both still alive and willing to cooperate with the occupation authorities, much of the day-to-day administration of the occupation zones would be carried out by the military forces of the occupying powers. Yet while the occupying forces made great strides in repairing the utterly destroyed nations and stabilizing its food supply, the occupation faced never before seen challenges with enormous incidence rates of cancer and a newly identified “atomic bomb disease” with poorly understood symptoms and little understanding of its treatment.

Blood Tide of the East
After Russia’s humiliating defeat in the Russo-Japanese War of 1934-1935, the country slipped into a dark period of brutal dictatorship at the hands of Anastasy Vonsyatsky and Ivan Solonevich. Yet few could have imagined that the horror could grow worse. The employment of strategic bombing against its crucial oil supply, the nuclear bombing of several of its cities, and worst of all an enormous anthrax attack targeted at its food supply caused the disintegration of Russia into famine and anarchy. As the powers of the Grand Alliance had declared victory and withdrew their troops from active fighting upon the surrender of Andrew Vlasov’s warlord band to western forces, the turmoil in Russia remained raging throughout President Merriam’s term with little outside intervention. Forces ranged from the claimed Romanov regent Mikhail Drozdovsky to the classical Integralist Boris Savinkov to the bloodthirsty racialist Bronislav Kaminski and dozens more in between fighting for the desiccated scraps of the once mighty country.
Ever vigilant on the frontier of this anarchy was the Reichskommissariat Muskowien, the former German puppet state instated by the Kaiser to facilitate the colonization of occupied Russian lands by German settlers. After its Reichskommissar was killed during the nuclear attack while visiting Berlin, his secretary Erich Koch seized control alongside a junta of military officers proclaiming the Reichskommissariat as a haven for the German people and embarking on a program of ethnic cleansing of the local Slavic population. Fearing that a military response would not only require another costly and unpopular war in Europe but also embroil the United States in the Russian frontier, President Merriam opted to continue the York administration’s position of withholding recognition from the Reichskommissariat while instead extending American influence in Eastern Europe under the auspices of his newly formed Office of Strategic Services.
With the German puppet governments in the Baltics, Poland, and Ukraine deeply unpopular and dependent on German support, their governments quickly collapsed under American and British influence leading to the establishment of new governments in each of the nations. Taking inspiration from the British program to unify the three Baltic nations under a single Baltic Union, President Merriam undertook a nation-building program of his own to attempt to unify Poland, Ukraine, and Romania into a single federation. However, the project remained stalled throughout his term due to a lack of enthusiasm from the member countries. Meanwhile, in an accord with the countries of the Grand Alliance, President Merriam and Secretary of State Joseph Grew took to settling the geopolitical situation of the Balkans. With the restoration of the Tsardom of Bulgaria already settled and Greece still preoccupied by civil war, the chief question would be the status of the former Triune. Striving for a balance between the competing claims of Austria and Hungary which had spiraled the world into war ten long years before, Grew negotiated the formation of a Danubian Confederation to replace the former Triune with substantial autonomy granted to the Czech, Slovak, Slovene, Hungarian, Croatian, Triestine, and Austrian states composing it but unifying them with a common citizenship and foreign policy.

Self-Determination For Whom?
Over the course of the Second World War, British and American forces had come to occupy virtually all of the vast continent of Africa and with the end of the war it fell upon them to oversee its fate. With the recent independence of the United States of the Congo under President Alvin York serving as an example, both President Charles Edward Merriam and British Prime Minister Aneurin Bevan were committed to the eventual decolonization of the African continent but they also agreed that the bulk of the diverse African peoples needed further “instruction” on democratic governance and western culture before being granted independence. Thus, the colonial system of rule remained largely unchanged on the continent, though German colonies would be transferred to the United Kingdom as trust territories and French and Italian colonies remained occupied until the settlement of a final peace treaty. The sole exception came in the German colony of Tanganyika, where former German Ambassador to the United Kingdom Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck escaped the destruction of his home in Bremen through a chance visit to his former Askari soldiers and worked with a group of veterans to proclaim a biracial Republic of Tanganyika in the aftermath of the German Empire’s destruction. Recalling Lettow-Vorbeck’s famous guerilla warfare campaign in the First World War, both the United Kingdom and the United States begrudgingly recognized this new African Republic.
Though the British were slow to release their colonies in Africa, the immense pressure building up within India could not be contained any longer as the Indian National Congress refused to tolerate the continuation of the home rule status quo. Thanks in large part to the close personal relationship of Prime Minister Bevan and Indian nationalist leader Jawaharlal Nehru, negotiations proceeded smoothly albeit without significant consultation of Muslim authorities that Nehru had clashed with previously. In the final agreement, India was granted independent Dominion status within the British Empire as a united polity and quickly forced the remaining princely states to comply. Under pressure of a possibly violent revolt in Burma, Bevan also pressed for an act to give independence to the Union of Burma soon thereafter. Even less consent from the colonizing power was required for the Indochinese Federation under the leadership of Ho Chi Minh, which had already successfully cast off both French rule and a later Japanese invasion. Though cautious of Ho Chi Minh’s socialist principles, President Merriam and Secretary Grew remained concerned about the more dangerous Marxist-Hansenist opposition in the country and decided to recognize his leadership to bolster his position against the radicals. This anti-colonialist streak would also extend itself to Indonesia, where American troops were instructed not to turn the country over to the former Dutch colonial administrators and instead support the independence movement to foster a loyal American ally in Southeast Asia.

Democracy in the Far East
Ever since the fateful day in 1939 when the United States declared war upon Japan, the Tiger of the East had become entrenched in the minds of the American people as their mortal enemy. Yet even despite cries for the execution of Emperor Hirohito and the visitation of revenge upon the Japanese people among the public, cooler heads prevailed in the State Department. The initial stages of Japan’s occupation were overseen by President Alvin York, who magnanimously saw Japan as a country that ought to be reformed rather than punished. Pressing for the shattering of its culture of militarism, the installation of structures of democracy, and even the Christianization of the nation, York’s program for the occupation proved massively influential for the future state of the country. Yet it would be President Charles Edward Merriam, eager to draw down United States military commitments, who would finish the process and finalize the treaty with Japan. Among the provisions of the treaty were the independence of Hawaii as a republic under American influence, the annexation of several Pacific islands including the Ryukyu Islands to serve as American naval installations, the placement of the remaining Pacific islands into trust territories, and the total demilitarization of Japan under a democratic system.
The presidency of Tasker H. Bliss had ushered in a special relationship between the United States and China that had persisted for the next twenty years. Yet under President Charles Edward Merriam, it had begun to fray. Upon hearing reports of American aid dollars being embezzled by the Chiang Kai-Shek administration for lavish personal corruption and believing Chiang to be a fundamentally self-interested and unreliable ally, Merriam quickly soured upon the Chinese Premier. Yet with the death of Vice Premier Feng Yuxiang, the opposition to Chiang remained too scattered for there to be any viable alternative. Thus, Merriam began maneuvering to install a set of new East Asian allies to reduce the monolithic power of China in the region. Chief among these was the Republic of Manchuria, which had been declared by a multi-ethnic group of local leaders seeking to avoid Chinese domination and given patronage by both Presidents York and Merriam. A further spite to Chiang would come with President Merriam’s support of the declaration of Taiwanese independence by Lei Chen, as the island had remained occupied by United States Marines after the end of the war. Despite these affronts, tensions between China and the United States were somewhat assuaged by American support for the return of French Yunnan, British Canton, Japanese Fujian, and Japanese Shandong to the Chinese Republic.

World Revolution, of Two Sorts
During the Great Depression, the Dominion of Newfoundland found itself in total collapse and was forced to surrender its independence back to its colonial overlord in the United Kingdom. Yet the war years remained hard for the Dominion and its people remained deeply unsatisfied with its governmental arrangement. As the concept of the Atlantic Union spread through the world with the impending end of the Second World War, a local movement under the leadership of Chesley Crosbie began preaching for a declaration of independence and subsequent application for United States statehood as a demonstration of support for the Atlanticist concept. Though initially dismissed as a fringe movement, a rapid growth of support led the Atlantic Union Party to carry independence to victory in a 1948 referendum. A subsequent victory in the first elections of the Dominion brought the Atlantic Union Party into power and it made its application for American statehood shortly thereafter. Once again angering the anti-Atlanticist section of the party, President Merriam urged that statehood be introduced as a joint resolution of the House and Senate, which ensured its passage even despite the opposition of a critical bloc of Senators who may have made a regular treaty ratification impossible. Yet a similar attempt at statehood for the island of Sicily would be blocked by Merriam, who argued that the referendum used for its justification was illegitimate due to an opposition boycott.
Long suffering under the neo-colonialism of their former colonial masters in France and a newer clique of German elites dominating the local economy, the nation of Haiti became a hotbed for the ideology of Marxism-Hansenism, which preached a violent and permanent world revolution to secure control of the means of production under the democratic management of the workers. After succeeding in its own revolution to overthrow the capitalist class, Haiti became a haven for Hansenists across the Americas seeking to plot their own revolutions by supporting them with revolutionary praxis, arms, and propaganda. After the outbreak of a revolution in Cuba, President Merriam recognized the threat that Haiti posed to the stability of the Americas and ordered the imposition of trade sanctions to strangle the suspected flow of funds and materiel from American Hansenists to the island. Furthermore, Secretary of State Joseph Grew orchestrated a vote in the International Association of American States to expel revolutionary Haiti from the organization due to its support for world revolution and undermining the government of other member states.
