2024.06.02 08:49 Sharp-Comedian-1700 Should I move to Melbourne or Sydney if the companies are offering the same salary?

I finally received two job offers on the same day! Thanks to all the legends here who kept pushing me to keep applying. Both offers are for $85k, which is 10 percent higher than my current salary in Tasmania. I am kind of confused about which offer I should take. I am 28 years old and single.
The Melbourne company focuses on sustainability and likes to deliver innovative solutions. They have a broad team of engineers, scientists, and urban planners. Meanwhile, the company in Sydney is strictly focused on doing more projects and making more money doing the same work. They gave me a very good timeline of how my career will progress if I join them from an intermediate hydraulic designer to senior in 3-4 years and so on.
I will be transitioning from a junior to an intermediate hydraulics designer role in both the companies . I have some family in Melbourne, which is also a factor to consider. However, the cost of living in Sydney is much higher, so it's a bit confusing where I should go. Personally, I would like to make more money and climb the ranks as the company in Sydney explained, but I am also very much inclined towards sustainability and not just focusing on doing lots of projects for money.
I wonder if anyone has had to make similar choices early in their careers and what their reflections are on the path they ended up picking?

šŸ”—Adidas Men's Adizero 12.0 Poison Football Cleats

https://preview.redd.it/ixswkheju34d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a12f5af1f809269038c49f93d62c886a31ce78b
I recently got the chance to try out the Adidas Adizero 12.0 Poison Men's Football Cleats, and I must say, they are quite the game changer! As an avid football player myself, I value comfort and traction above all else. Thankfully, these cleats didn't disappoint. The lightweight design makes it super easy to move around the field without feeling weighed down. Additionally, their breathability ensures that my feet stay cool and dry during the toughest of games.
One of the standout features for me was the unique animal-inspired design on the tongue. It adds a personal touch to the cleats that makes them stand out from other brands. Plus, they provide excellent traction on both turf and firm ground, making them versatile for various playing surfaces.
However, there were a few drawbacks worth mentioning. Some users reported issues with durability, stating that their cleats began falling apart after just a few weeks of use. Personally, I haven't experienced this issue, but it's worth considering if you're planning on investing in these cleats.
Another concern might be the price point. At $140, these cleats are definitely on the higher end of the spectrum. While I believe the quality and performance justify the cost, it's important to weigh this against your personal budget.
In summary, the Adidas Adizero 12.0 Poison Men's Football Cleats are an excellent choice for those seeking comfort, traction, and a unique design. Although some users have reported durability concerns, my own experience has been overwhelmingly positive. As with any purchase, it's essential to consider both pros and cons before making your decision.

As a die-hard football fan, I've tried numerous cleats in search of the perfect pair that combines comfort, durability, and style. So when I got my hands on these Adidas Freak 23 inline football cleats, I was eager to see if they'd live up to the hype.
Right out of the box, the first thing that caught my eye was the sleek design and bold colors. Once I laced them up, I noticed how snug they felt, thanks to the engineered mesh bootee. The soft synthetic upper and padded ankle collar provided just the right amount of support without feeling too restrictive.
One of the standout features of these cleats is the Bounce midsole. It gave me an amazing level of responsiveness and energy return during sprints and quick cuts on the field. Plus, the sustainability aspect with recycled materials made me feel good about my purchase.
However, after several weeks of use, I did notice some wear and tear on the outsoles, which was a bit disappointing. Overall though, I'd highly recommend these Adidas Freak 23 inline football cleats for anyone looking to up their game while supporting eco-friendly practices.

šŸ”—Adidas Adizero Spark Kids' Inline Football Cleats

https://preview.redd.it/xa4nje8lu34d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=597f5721a8316fdb316042c08f203171053e3724
As a reviewer, I've had the chance to test these Adidas Adizero Spark Inline Cleats multiple times and can attest that they're incredibly lightweight and comfortable. The anti-abrasion TPU skin on the synthetic upper ensures durability, making them perfect for rigorous games. Their versatile black color blends effortlessly with any uniform, while the strategically placed studs offer excellent traction on any field condition. Plus, knowing that they're made with 50% recycled content adds to the satisfaction of buying sneakers that contribute to a healthier environment.
However, some users reported blisters after wearing these cleats, indicating a possible sizing or design flaw. Despite this, the overall rating from existing users reflects their satisfaction with the Adizero Spark Inline Cleats' durability, attractiveness, and comfortable fit.

šŸ”—Adidas Freak Spark MD 23 Men's Football Cleats - Black/White

https://preview.redd.it/1fy98xllu34d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=14a988419c7134e17701d6e701e604039e0e2f62
I've been using the Adidas Freak Spark MD 23 Men's Football Cleats for a few weeks now, and I have to say they've been exceptional. The blend of comfort, durability, and visual appeal makes them an excellent choice for any football player.
The high-quality construction ensures that these cleats provide excellent support, keeping your feet protected during intense games. They're also super lightweight, which enhances speed and mobility on the field. Plus, the tongue and heel pull tabs make getting them on and off a breeze.
While there's much to love about these cleats, one drawback is the slightly longer break-in period compared to other models. However, once you've broken them in, the comfort level is top-notch.
Overall, I would recommend the Adidas Freak Spark MD 23 Men's Football Cleats to anyone who's looking for a reliable, stylish, and comfortable pair of football cleats. Give them a try, and you won't be disappointed.

šŸ”—Adidas Predator League L FG Black 5 - Men's Football Cleats

https://preview.redd.it/3e7wrw0mu34d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=530b6ba329b0ecd23054487d3d7a8553c10d2164
I recently had the chance to test out the Adidas Predator League L FG Black 5 football cleats, and I must say, they've been a game-changer on the pitch! The Predator League models are made with the same last as the Elite versions, providing the same empowerment and advantage.
But what really set these cleats apart for me was their excellent traction and touch precision. The ControlPlate 2.0 outsole ensures enhanced stability and control, making it easy to maintain touch even when I'm sprinting towards the goal. In addition, the HYBRIDTOUCH 2.0 upper, made of synthetic suede and foil, delivers a perfect combination of comfort and stability.
However, one issue I encountered was the central lacing. While it may provide a secure fit, I feel it might restrict my ability to get that perfect strike on the ball. All in all, the Adidas Predator League L FG Black 5 football cleats are a valuable addition to any player's gear, offering superior control and comfort.

šŸ”—Adidas Junior Adizero Spark 7v7 Football Cleats For Kids

As an avid football player who always prefers Adidas cleats, I was excited to try out the Adidas Adizero Spark 7v7 for my 4 kids. The bold colors and eye-catching patterns truly stand out on the field, drawing attention while the anti-abrasion overlays ensure durability game after game.
One of the highlights for me is how well these cleats perform in both wet and dry conditions, thanks to their strategically placed studs. They provide excellent traction, allowing my kids to showcase their skills with confidence. Plus, they're eco-friendly since at least 50% of the upper is made from recycled materials, helping end plastic waste.
However, there's room for improvement when it comes to comfort. A couple of reviews mentioned that the shoes caused blisters on their children's feet, which is something to keep in mind when considering this product. Overall, the Adidas Adizero Spark 7v7 Cleats deliver on style, durability, and performance on the field, making them a strong contender for any young football player.

2024.06.02 08:01 Bananamuffin16 Challenge underperformer designation?

Looking for some advice/guidance on the best way to challenge being designated as an underperformer at work. Some background:
Been at the company for nearly 6 years, never had any performance issues. Original role was back office/support. I changed roles into a hardefront office job (this was a return to work I was previously doing elsewhere- so had experience in it) just about 2 years ago and the first year was great- led a great team, good results, good appraisal in May 2023.
Then I hit a string of bad luck. Was staffed on a project with people who were chasing promotions, so lots of sharp elbows, talking over me, and not inviting me to meetings etc. They were also marginally more senior than me so treated me as a mid-level and assigned me junior tasks. The culture is very toxic so this is common.
December I was given a mid-year appraisal and told I had some development points to address, but specifically told I wasnā€™t being put on a performance plan or that anyone in the organization thought I was a problem. Basically, my takeaway was all was still good, just some refining of approach.
New project assigned in January. Threw myself in wholeheartedly knowing I had these points to address. Not given a leadership role in the matter so still very much doing what was told. Even worse instances of not being invited to key meetings, not being briefed. I took every initiative- sifted through the team folders to make sure I was up to speed, had convos to brief myself, but I couldnā€™t help not being invited or told about key meetings. I played a fairly big role on this project producing key work product and driving the matter forward, but just wasnā€™t the ā€œfaceā€ of the project. We had manic deadlines and we worked around the clock. I felt I did well, or at least well enough despite being excluded from participating.
Annual appraisal was just after this project ended (April) and I was told I was underperforming. Senior people had to spend too much time reviewing my work. I wouldnā€™t get a pay rise or my bonus. It was made clear to me that to them, I was being watched on this last project which was my last chance to impress them that I could do the job, and I apparently failed. And now itā€™s clear they want me to leave (though Iā€™m not being outright fired).
So how can I challenge this? There wasnā€™t any communication of this ā€œlast chanceā€, or that I was essentially on probation. The points raised in the December meeting were very different from the points they raised in my annual appraisal. Nobody said anything to me about my work product this whole time.
Iā€™m job hunting anyway, place is so toxic and they clearly donā€™t want me, but Iā€™d like to get the underperformer status removed so I can have my bonus.

2024.06.02 07:36 JDCooke Coast Environmental Alliance vs the local Aboriginal Land Council: an interview with ā€˜Walk for Kariongā€™ organiser Emma French.

Coast Environmental Alliance vs the local Aboriginal Land Council: an interview with ā€˜Walk for Kariongā€™ organiser Emma French.
Recently advertising appeared on Social Media for an upcoming event related to ā€œSaving Kariong Sacred Lands.ā€
https://preview.redd.it/keloxgcrh34d1.png?width=1023&format=png&auto=webp&s=8af7225c437fc8b966382a0af8bb522424e1aa84
Advertised as a Walk 4 Kariong, this event was being run by Emma French, of the GuriNgai affiliated ā€˜Coast Environmental Allianceā€™ (CEA) founded by non-Aboriginal man Jake Cassar.
https://preview.redd.it/n93pkznxh34d1.png?width=1249&format=png&auto=webp&s=266d5cad46935a4803fb8bc848aba33ab0a73c50
To find out more, I had a quick yarn with the organiser of this event, Ms Emma French.
My first question was simply whether the Walk for Kariong Sacred Lands event was being organised by Ms French, to which she replied ā€œitā€™s just a day that we are going to meet up, as a group, and do some of the 5-Lands Walk.
https://preview.redd.it/8yt44ol4i34d1.png?width=798&format=png&auto=webp&s=810c4a49c5b7ea871330b54bf4c4b957566cfa9e
ā€˜Itā€™s just a social group getting together, itā€™s not like an actual organised event. There are t-shirts, for the cause, which people will be wearing on the day. Itā€™s a social event, with our group, that are going to walk together, to help the wildlife. We are going to be walking together, thatā€™s it, itā€™s not a protest; itā€™s a family friendly walkā€™, Ms French said.
ā€œThe thing is, we are doing it on that day because Darkinjung Land Council (Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council DLALC), and ā€˜5-Landsā€™ are pretty much the same people. The 5-Lands is sponsored by, supported by the Land Council (DLALC) so they are quite entwined.ā€
Ms French claimed that ā€˜Kariong Sacred Lands was saved by the same group of people around 10-12 years ago. The people that saved the land are from the same group as I am from (Coast Environmental Alliance, CEA). Darkinjung (DLALC) owns a big chunk of that and they are trying to rezone it, so they can build on it. So all those people who were fighting back then, are back up again.ā€™
Ms Emma French went on to say ā€˜thereā€™s different groups, and they change over the years, but the group that we are belonging to now, well are just part of, we are just members, is CEA, Coast Environmental Alliance, set up by Jake Cassar. So itā€™s all linked, weā€™re all linked together. We have been doing protests and rallies, weā€™ve tried to get Liesel Tesch to listen, but she wonā€™t and keeps saying her hands are tied.ā€™
https://preview.redd.it/7u1ncb63i34d1.png?width=668&format=png&auto=webp&s=935614cb7112001746bcd9bd1dbef6df97ed7fff
Ms Emma French described that her group and Save Kariong Sacred Lands were essentially the same group, while Coast4One is also run by another member of CEA Vicki Burke, whom Ms French described as being among Evan and Steven Strong as ā€˜the original people who fought to save Kariongā€™.
I mentioned that all these different groups, of essentially the same half dozen people, seem completely focussed on one small parcel of land that is owned by the local Aboriginal controlled organisation.
ā€œRight now thatā€™s the land that is at threat. We know if we donā€™t say anything, and just let that (the development) go through, it will be very easy for them to take down other sites.ā€™
At this point I sought clarification on who Ms French meant when she said ā€˜themā€™.
ā€˜Darkinjung! The developers! Darkinjung is a land developer, theyā€™re a council and a land developer. We know that Darkinjung is a developer. The people will be very much aligned with them (DLALC), their families, and hire them to build and develop the land.ā€
To summarise what weā€™ve learnt so far ā€“ Ms Emma French had planned a ā€˜social eventā€™ including over organisations that have for the last few years been hyper focused on Kariong, and were now selling t-shirts and marching together in a non-protest in solidarity against the local Aboriginal controlled Local Aboriginal Land Council, on the day of the 5-lands walkā€¦
Ms French replied ā€˜well the t-shirts were not for the event, they were something we were always going to get done anyway. We were always planning to do the t-shirts, the t-shirts are coinciding with the event, people might wear them for the event, or wear them if they are doing the event or not. I back the local Aboriginal People opposing the development such as Paul Craig, Renee Sales, and Colleen Fuller.ā€™
https://preview.redd.it/in64nn86i34d1.png?width=514&format=png&auto=webp&s=90674a9c131f1777c220dceaad782e2aaf1be427
I asked if Ms French was familiar with the very public controversies regarding ā…” of her ā€˜Aboriginal Peopleā€™ who were in reality non-Aboriginal, and that only Renee Sales is an Aboriginal Person.
ā€˜Talk to Jake Cassar, he does everything, and I just do the graphic design.ā€™
https://preview.redd.it/4ohnw3e1i34d1.png?width=557&format=png&auto=webp&s=2e25840eafa36eae13a90e20ba393438c8257fae
The topic turned to CEAā€™s repeated criticism of members of DLALC allegedly not being from the Central Coast. I asked why that would matter, and why this standard was not applied to Ms French, and her compatriots who are themselves, for the most part, not from the Central Coast, as well as not being Aboriginal.
Ms French replied ā€œIā€™m just doing it for the animals, to give them a voice.
Weā€™re not intending to gate-crash the event, weā€™re not gate-crashing the event, weā€™re just walking on the beach.ā€™
Ms French had at this stage not been in contact with 5-Lands Walk, and had no intention of doing so.
ā€œIā€™ve never had to ask permission to walk on Copa Beach before.ā€

It is unconfirmed whether Fire closed the first set or was even performed at all. Trey referred to HYHU as the "Henrietta Theme Song." After Page played several measures of the second HYHU in the setlist, Fish said "There's one more verse to this," and then they played the final verse of Love You. Fish also continued to play vacuum during the third and final HYHU of the set, which also featured Trey repeating "Henrietta!" over and over again, singing it along to the music's conclusion. In response to a fan requesting more Syd Barrett after the last HYHU, Fish spoke the first few words of Bike. Trey teased Call to the Post before YEM (as Fish was returning to his drum kit after HYHU). Before Contact, Fish said "We would like to perform for you now the bass-player-is- taking-a-leak-song." Fish then dedicated Contact to Paul Languedoc. Also before Contact, Page told the crowd that their bass player (whom Trey then referred to as "Michael Cactin") would become 25 years old at midnight. Trey added that Mike would now play everyone a love song.

2024.06.02 07:07 TatianaWinterbottom Luxury Studio Apartment (400 sq ft) or Non-Luxury 1 bedroom (600-700 square feet) for the same price range ($950-$1000/month)

Location: Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN
I'm debating if the extra space is worth sacrificing for luxury amenities. I've also toured some non-luxury studios about the same size but decided the price difference of around $100-$150 cheaper plus in being in less desirable locations wasn't worth the cost.
Luxury Apartment Pros
*Brand new building built in 2022. The exterior design is also unique (It's shaped like a trapezoid and won a design award when it was built)
*5th floor with good view
*New stainless steel appliances, in unit hybrid washedryer (heard mixed reviews about this particular LG machine though), granite countertops, hardwood flooring
*Building has a rooftop terrace on the 8th floor with great views of the city Skyline, barbecue grill, fireplace.
*Numerous co-working/studying places in the building (I'm a grad student so this would benefit me)
*Free-wifi in Public areas in the building, so I could not even get wifi in my apartment
*Lower utilities? (I'm assuming its cheaper to heat smaller area but not sure about insulation in these new buildings that are made of cardboard.)
Cons:
*Smaller square footage (Although there is a lot of storage space. I can also use my car for additional storage).
*Bed and kitchen are in same room
*Location is at the border of a desirable neighborhood and an undesirable neighborhood
*$150/month parking, but there is ample free street parking in a residential area nearby
Non-Luxury Apartment Pros
*Larger space for only $50/month more
*Quieter neighborhood deeper into a good part of the city
*Free off surface lot parking
*Thicker walls/insulation
Non-Luxury Apartment Cons
*Communal washing machines (though still free)
*The interior has more modest appliances and mostly carpet
*No building amenities
*Exterior isn't as aesthetically pleasing (building was built in 1950s)
I'm leaning towards the luxury apartment as my stuff should fit in the studio (though it may be a little tight) and I like the extra amenities, but a friend told me the price wasn't that $950 is expensive for a $400 sq foot studio since he pays only $300 more for a 900 square foot 1 bedroom.

DISCLAIMER: This theory will go over the entire story of Platinum End, so obvious spoilers ahead.Just a heads up, this theory is posted at the time that only a few episodes of the anime have been released. Depending on how much the anime stays like the manga, details may end up changing. Therefore, the entire theory will be based solely on the manga. I will also leave snippets of the manga with the highlighted text to support my claim. Please be sure to read those as it will help this theory make sense. This theory is completely my own original thoughts. If anyone shares this, please be sure to credit me, Muphenz. Thanks! Hello, my fellow Platinum End fans! If youā€™re like me, the ending completely caught me off guard and left my head-scratching. Do not worry! Iā€™ve overanalyzed everything and made a theory to possibly explain who god and those beings at the end of the story are, so you donā€™t have to. Those beings at the end of the manga, chapter 58, are drum rollā€¦humans of the future who have achieved many scientific advancements who existed well before the story of Platinum End takes place and are simulating their own world with fake humans, fake angels, and a fake god. Why are the real humans running this simulation? Simply put, theyā€™re suicidal and no amount of therapy is going to help with that. Why are they wanting to die? In the future, it is predicted by Gaku Yoneda that within 500 years, humans will achieve immortality. Once they achieve immortality, they will eventually master time and space and will be able to do things like teleport, time travel, see the future, etc. And once humans achieve immortality and are able to know all of the future, they will discover that the future cannot be changed according to Dr. Yoneda. Just like Dr. Yonedaā€™s prediction, the real humans are wanting to die which is why itā€™s stated by one of the real humans how annoying it is that there is no death. Whatever the process was that made the real humans immortal, it seems that it cannot be reversed to restore oneā€™s mortality. Although itā€™s not stated how humans will achieve immortality and allow them to control time and space, this will somehow cause humanityā€™s apocalypse as well, destroying the original Earth. What makes these creatures more human-like than god-like is that they admit they were born on another planet, most likely the original Earth. They are also aware that they too were created by something that is above them. How do we know Dr. Yonedaā€™s predictions are right? It was stated by Shuji Nakaumi that his past predictions came true. One thing to understand about science is that itā€™s extremely good at accurately predicting things. Example 1: With Issac Newtonā€™s law of motion, scientists can predict the position of an object at any specific time, past, present, or future. Example 2: In the 1840s, Fitzner astronomer Urbain Le Verrier was analyzing the orbit pathway of Mercury and found that it is changing very slowly over time. With technology limited at that time, it was hard to provide proof. In 1915, the famous German physicist, Albert Einstein was able to calculate the influence of the curved space in Mercuryā€™s orbit. That is 75 years later that science proved its prediction was right. Although science cannot tell future events like a psychic will attempt to, I believe this is what the author was using to help advance the plot for the ending. The real humans already know the future and theyā€™re aware that no matter what they try, death is not a part of that. If they cannot do it, someone else can. That is when these simulations come in. The real humans will create simulated humans. In one of the simulations, the story of Platinum End takes place. This would not be on a computer. This process would involve terraforming an entire planet to support carbon-based life. The planet that the simulated humans live on will be similar to the original Earth as well as the history and advancement of science will be similar to the real humans. As the simulated humanā€™s society progresses, like in Platinum End, they would eventually learn how to become immortal and learn how to control space-time which would lead to them wanting to die just like the real humans. But unlike the real humans, the simulated ones may actually achieve a way to kill themselves once they obtain immortality that the real humans could use. But as we already know stated by the real humans, this specific simulation was a failure. Nothing was created that was capable of killing them. Thus, the real humans will move on to a new simulation. Pay very special attention to this picture. Notice right after all of the humans disappear when the fake god kills himself, the buildings are slowly crumbling away since no one is here to maintain them. According to World Building, it would take an average of 250 years for a building to start to break apart since materials like wood and plastic would be destroyed by the environment if not maintained. Metal would be expanding and no longer able to keep the building's structure in place. This would cause things like windows to fall off and shatter. So after a few hundred years, the real humans return to the planet after the simulated humans disappeared due to the fake godā€™s suicide. Itā€™s possible that during this time theyā€™re running other simulations on other planets and returned when this simulation was completed. Since the real humans have achieved master over space-time, teleporting to anywhere in the universe would not be out of the question. Since they cannot die, the amount of time it would take for the real humans to travel anywhere in the universe is irrelevant as well. Even though Gaku Yonedaā€™s predictions about the simulated humanityā€™s end were wrong, he was technically right. It did come true for the real humans. If Shuji Nakaumi, as the fake god, did not kill himself and wipe out all of the fake humans, they would of most likely learned how to cheat death and to control space-time in the future. Gaku was wrong about the fake god being a product of human belief in order to live. He even admits that the composition of the fake god was wrong. If the fake god required human belief to live, then Shuji would not have erased the memories of those who were not god candidates as it would have affected the fake god's existence if fewer people believed in him. There is one thing that begs the question. Why is a fake god needed to run these simulations? Why do the simulated humans have souls? Why not just create the simulated humans and leave them to figure out how to create an immortal killing machine without the process of a false god? This is because God and souls are actually real and are necessary for life to exist. To clarify, the ā€œGodā€ that Shuji Nakaumi was transmuted into is not the true God that Iā€™m referring to. Iā€™m referring to the first cause of everything, a self-aware creator, a deistic God who existed before time and space who created the universe and does not intervene in its creation. This means no miracles, prophecy, answering prayers, divine revelation, etc. Everything in the universe is governed by physics and these laws cannot be broken. The real humans who are running the simulations are aware that they are a creation made from a creator. However, since a deistic God does not interfere in the universe, the real humans cannot know of him, at least while they are still alive. Considering the real humans can control space-time, I can say for certain at one point, at least one person went to the very beginning of time and saw something that would be evidence of an intelligent designer creating the universe. When the real humans are conversing with each other at the finale, one human suggests identifying what created them and the second one replies that seeking their creator will be a waste of time. If a deistic God wonā€™t intervene in its creation, the real humans would be wasting time by attempting to contact him. Even though they can control space-time, if the creator exists outside of reality, they would not be able to reach this entity. Focusing on figuring out who created them means that time is wasted if they're not figuring out how to die which is why it would take them further away from death. Just as the simulated humans have souls, the real humans also have souls. At some point, the real humans discovered the soul. They are aware that this is needed for life to be sentient. The discovery of the soul could have played a key part in the real humans achieving immortality. The fake god is engineered by the real humans to create souls so that life can be sentient, mimic the universe's deistic God by allowing the simulation to run with no interference, and act as a mod to keep an eye on life with the red and white arrows. The celestial realm was created so the fake god would not be a part of the simulated world. Even though time moves differently in the celestial realm, it is the closest thing that the real humans can engineer to simulate a deist God that is separated from its creation. This fake god does not have the powers of a supreme being. The fake god does not know everything, is not everywhere at once, and does not display any sort of omnipotent ability. There is a lot of things that the fake god admits to not knowing, such as who created him, why are souls preserved, and how long does the merging process take. Although we do see the fake god have the ability to observe humanity, I would say that this is the equivalent of having admin privileges to watch humanity live-streamed on YouTube. The fake god is aware that he is created by someone. The fake god noticed that there are things that had already been created that he was not a part of just by observing everything in the universe. Although he seems to not understand what created him. He even acknowledges the idea that humanity could have created him. All the simulated souls come from the fake god. This is done through a process of emanation, which means to flow from. In the Abrahamic religions, specifically Gnosticism, Jewish Mysticism, and certain sectors of Protestantism, instead of your typical creator being separate from its creation, everything is a spontaneous outflow from God. As pieces of God emanate from him, it becomes less divine, but these pieces will eventually become an individual soul that forms into human spirits, angels, demons, as well as other things that come into reality such as heaven, hell, and the world of the living. Eventually, everything that came from God, will return back to the creator. (If youā€™re still confused on what emanation is, I would do more research before continuing to read as this will play a key role in understanding who the fake god is.) Emanation is how the fake god created the simulated human and their soul, the fake angels, and the celestial realm. The fake god took a piece of himself and used it to create life. Since everything emanates from the fake god is connected to him, as he is dying, most of the angels are dying too. Due to this connection, when the fake god killed himself, everything that was tied to the fake god disappeared. But because the creation of the fake god is not connected to the physical world, the planet and everything that is not life remained on it. When the simulated human beings die, the soul goes to the celestial realm. This is the returning aspect of emanation. The souls that came from the fake god are returning back to him. You always see all angels, regardless of rank, having the task of carrying the souls to the celestial realm. It seems that the main purpose of the angels is to help with the return part of the emanation process. The more that the emanence is divided, the less divine it becomes. This is why the fake humans are considered sub-celestial in the hierarchy. It appears that there is a certain order to the flow of emanation. The newest creations emanate from the fake god. Kids will be the first in the line for the emanate process and their parents will be behind them. This is why when the fake god committed suicide, the kids were the first ones to disappear, then the adults. All things that emanate from the fake god are returning to the original source in reverse order when the fake god takes his own life. When the fake god merges with a human, this appears to go against the set pattern of the emanation process by breaking the order in which the emanence flows. This is why when Shuji merged with the fake god, it felt like there was something foreign in the fake god's body similar to how an infected person's body acts when the immune system detects foreign bacteria or a virus. The only way to get around it is by the fake god merging with a simulated human and having the fake god take over the new body when the fusion is completed. It is stated by the fake god that it is nothing more than humanity's assumption that God cannot die. This may be true for the deistic God, but not for a fake god. It is already known that the real humans achieved immortality. Although the fake god could have been engineered to be immortal, that would just create another being who would eventually want to die. The fake god was designed to live a long life, compared to humans, that could be extended through the process of merging with one of its emanated counterparts until the simulation was completed. This has been done throughout time in the form of the god choosing process. The fake god confirmed to Shuji that his purpose was to create life. Professor Yoneda confirmed that the fake god was created by human imagination and that its purpose was to end life. On the surface, this may seem like a contradiction. But both of them are right. The fake godā€™s purpose was to create the simulated humans. God is metaphorically a creation of human imagination. It was not by the simulated humanā€™s imagination as stated by Yoneda, but it was designed and engineered by the minds of the real humans. Since the purpose of the simulation is for the fake humans to achieve immortality and figure out how to reverse it, you can say that the fake god is a part of that process of killing humanity. Right as all of the humans are disappearing, Dr. Yoneda realizes that the composition that makes up the creature is based on a science that the simulated humans have not discovered yet. The composition of the fake god is Aether. In medieval times, a common study among scholars is alchemy, which can be best described as the forerunner for modern-day chemistry mixed with the pseudoscience of metaphysics. According to Charles Gillispie, a historian at Princeton University, in his book, The Edge of Objectivity, An Essay in the History of Scientific Ideas, Aether is the fifth element, along with earth, wind, fire, and water, that are the basic building blocks of the universe. During medieval times, Aether is the substance that is believed to connect the physical world to the spiritual one. It was even a common belief that the Abrahamic God was surrounded by Aether and that all of the angels, demons, and souls that dwelled in the afterlife breathed it in as humans breathed in the air. According to Jakob Bernoulli, a mathematician from the 1600s, believed that Aether is what allowed souls to interact with their human bodies. All of these characteristics of Aether match the composition of the fake god. Aether is what allows life to become sentient, connecting all of the simulated humans back to the fake god from the physical world to the celestial realm. It seems at some point, the real humans discover this element. This discovery most likely led to the discovery of the soul. Using this element, the real humans used Aether to construct the fake god needed for the simulations. Everything that is a part of the simulation, the fake god, angels, the soul, the arrows, is made up of this element. The red arrow is what allows the god candidates to make other humans fall in love with them so much that the person who is under the influence of the arrow will do literally anything the person who is in control wants, even die for them. The white arrow has the ability to kill any life while all inanimate objects are unaffected. These were limits placed on the arrows by the fake god. According to Ogaro, the fake god can use the full power of the arrows at will. The red arrow is more than just making someone fall in love. The arrow does this by taking away their free will. The god candidates were limited to using the arrow on 14 people at once for a period of up to 33 days. With the fake god able to use the full power of the red arrow, he can enslave any or all simulated humans with a snap of his finger for as long as he desired. The red arrow also played a role in creating the first simulated life as well. The fake god stated that if life was left alone, it would multiply. The desire of falling in love and wanting to procreate was implanted by the red arrow when life was created. The white arrow is the opposite of the red arrow. This arrow can kill life instantly. The limit that was placed on this arrow is that only one white arrow can be shot at a time. Just like the red arrow, this arrow has a maximum range of 31.6 meters. When cycling the white arrow, there is a cool down period of 0.3 seconds. If these limiters are removed, the fake god can kill all humans with the white arrows with virtually no limit on distance, any number of arrows can be used simultaneously, and there would be no mandatory cool down period. The creation of the simulated humans involves two key ingredients. The first is the soul which comes from the fake god. The second is a physical body for the soul to be attached to. The real humans asked if it was worth planting another seed and another god as those are two separate things. The making of another god is obviously the fake god. But what is the seed? The seed is what makes the physical embodiment of all plants and animals that all emanence is attached to. I.E., souls attached to bodies. According to the fake god, before he created life on the fake Earth, there was some sort of micro-organism. This seed would be that micro-organism, specifically carbon-based bacteria that is capable of evolution. Around 3 billion years ago, the first life on Earth was bacteria. There are two types of bacteria, a classification of anaerobic bacteria that ate other organic compounds and simple sugars to survive. The other kind is autotrophs bacteria which is capable of self-feeding. Anaerobic bacteria would evolve into modern-day animals. Autotroph bacteria would evolve into modern-day plants that still have the ability to self-feed through a process of photosynthesis. It is possible to send bacteria through space. According to a 2020 study published in the Journal of Frontiers in Microbiology, bacteria were able to survive in space for three years. If the real humans were able to transport the seed through space in less than 3 years, it could easily survive. Considering they achieved immortality, it is within reason to think this would be a piece of cake for them. At some point, part of the anaerobic bacteria would come in contact with the fake god, who was on the fake Earth at that time to make life, recognized the fake god as food, and attempted to feed off of him to survive. The bacteria that fed off the fake god would eventually evolve into Nasse. The bacteria that did not feed off of the fake god would evolve into more complex forms of life on the fake Earth. Since Nasse was accidentally created from this event, it most likely means that she is the first angel that the fake god created. This means that she could serve as inspiration for the fake god to create angels for the celestial realm. The angels don't seem to share any ability to reproduce with each other. There is never any mention of any family heritage. It means that all of the angels were created around the same time. Since Nasse is the only angel that came from the seed/bacteria, her biological makeup differs from all the other angels. While the majority of her is angel, part of the genetic makeup is similar to carbon-based life. Although I would not say Nasse is an angel-human hybrid, she could be considered a type of Nephilim. Due to this biological difference, Nasse is the only angel that can interfere in both the physical world and the celestial realm. Much research has shown that facial expressions are innate among all animals, not just humans. The same animals that display facial expressions when expressing emotions, lying, determination, etc. use similar muscles in the face as humans do. For example, a Psychologist, Paul Ekman, studied facial expression from hours of film and ventured on to multiple isolated tribes who have very little contact with modern society. He showed them pictures of facial expressions and asked them to interpret them. These people were able to match facial expressions and their meaning with high accuracy. This is one of the many studies that show facial expressions are genetic. Even though Nasse is single-minded, she is able to understand facial expressions due to her biological relationship with the simulated life on the fake Earth. But hey, this is just a theory."

2024.06.02 05:59 Spare_Savings_2009 is college worth it?

hi! so iā€™m 16 going into my senior year of high school , and for a long time i always saw college as the next step after u graduate high school so i never thought much about it other than seeing schools that I would want to keep in mind when it came time to apply. over the past year and a half i pretty much decided in my mind that i wouldnt be going to college because of the fact i feel like i could find an amazing job like in real estate that would pay well and i wouldnt need a degree for that might put me in debt for the rest of my life. now the reason i started thinking about the financial part of college is bc a year ago i moved in with my dad after previously living with my grandparents for 6 years. they are very financially well off, they own a house in a very nice suburb of socal and we never worried about finances from my perspective, in fact my grandma loved designer bags and owned probably close to 40 of them. its pretty safe to assume we were more than well off. however my dad is not in the same situation, in fact we live with one of his friends in a 2 bedroom apt so my dad sleeps on the couch so i can have my own room, and there are many times where he will tell me we cannot buy things because his account is empty. so two very different situations. in the past year me and my grandma have not had the best relationship, but recently it has been good with us spending time together with no issues. for some more context, once i moved in with my dad i was able to transfer to a school that was in the city i used to live in and my grandparents did not allow me but my dad did. when i transferred there i ended up falling out with the friend i did have and was unable to sustain any friendships bc of how far i lived from this school. i ended up doing the second half of the school year online and do not go out much. i now feel like my junior year of highschool was wasted and next year i will probably be at a school with no one ive ever met before and im afraid i wont make connections and my times of having friends and going out and having fun is over! every day college seems more and more appealing and like a second chance , but thinking about the debt it might put me in for life scares me. with me and my grandparents relationship being good again i dont think they would let me do it alone and might help me pay, but assuming my entire tuition would be paid off is unrealistic so i would definitely be in some debt. i dont have much time to decide as i have 2 more months before senior year so i need some advice and to decide quick! thank you! šŸ’• p.s. i marked this ā€œpersonalā€ bc of the fact that im not just asking ab college bc of the education aspect but also bc of the social and financial aspect and bc of how my situation is i just feel like makes it a lot deeper than ā€œeducationā€ with this decision.. thank you <3

Score at the Goodwill Bins.
I had only ever heard the "Band on the Run" song by Wings. I found this in the Goodwill Outlet bins and case swapped it with an old software cd rom. As I am playing now, I am so blown away. It's like Beatles music but even better production and musicianship. It's so good. Best Ten Cents I have spent in a while.

2024.06.02 02:55 Natono6 How many packaging designers here make their own dielines?

Just trying to see if what I do is the norm for a packaging designer or not. I'm a junior with 1 year of experience.
As part of my in-house job, I make artwork that follows brand guidelines, AND I adjust and make dielines from scratch for new products. I also regularly create diagrams for custom blister packaging.
Is this normal or do most people in this niche just make the artwork on factory provided dielines?

2024.06.02 00:39 KCmean CGPA > SKILLS

I'm a TY student from KJ SOMAIYA COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, Mumbai to give you all a quick brief about me im a UI/X designer(or was one) I've solved like 150(I know it's less but still) LC problems and also I'm a 3x national hackathon runner up. Im not claiming that I've knowledge of everything but when compared to people around me who got summer interns in firms like JP, Barclays and GOLDMANN , I just feel sad, due to my not so good cgpa (8.6) i was not even allowed to sit for online assessment or even I got the chance, I got removed by tpo of my own college cause obviously they want people with good Academics Not with good coding skills, some of my really close friends are also in v good companies and for them I feel happy cause I know they've put efforts into it by working hard, but on the other hand... I feel sad for myself that I was not able to prioritise my cgpa and academics cause now the exact reason I'm behind is my academics... To all the juniors especially from tier 2 or tier 3 college please put your CGPA above everything, literally this girl from my college was asked how to reverse a linked list in her final round of GS interview... CGPA should be your first thing to prioritise that's what I belive now ... It doesn't matter if you're well versed with coding n all ... No CGPA no good opportunities that's it ( atleast for TIER 3 colleges I mean )
I just felt lile ranting and sharing my experience don't mind me. Thank You

2024.06.02 00:32 DirectionOk7752 Creative Ad Agencies in Australia?

Hey everyone!
Iā€™m currently a student at Michigan State University studying creative advertising and graphic design and will be graduating in about a year. Iā€™m super passionate about art direction and am looking to kickstart my career as a Junior Art Director or something similar. Iā€™ve been building my portfolio and working on a few freelance projects, but now Iā€™m on the hunt for agencies that are known to hire junior talent.
Do any of you have recommendations for agencies that are open to hiring Junior Art Directors specifically in Australia? Also, any tips on how to approach these agencies or what they typically look for in a junior candidate would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance for your help!

2024.06.01 23:13 SanderSo47 Directors at the Box Office: Richard Donner

Directors at the Box Office: Richard Donner
https://preview.redd.it/vy035zlxz04d1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=d0e44d2c15efeb0e4509665368da69df4b50c058
Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Richard Donner's turn.
Initially, Donner wanted to develop a career as an actor. He gained a bit part in a television program directed by Martin Ritt, who encouraged Donner to become a director instead, and he hired Donner as his assistant. Through his connections in Desilu, he started directing commercials. In the 60s, he transitioned into television, directing episodes for shows like The Twilight Zone, The Fugitive, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Get Smart, and Gilligan's Island. Afterwards, he had his chance to direct films.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

It should be noted that as he started his career in the 1960s, the domestic grosses here will be adjusted by inflation. The table with his highest grossing films, however, will be left in its unadjusted form, as the worldwide grosses are more difficult to adjust.

X-15 (1961)

"Actually filmed in space!"
His directorial debut. It stars David McLean, Charles Bronson, James Gregory and Mary Tyler Moore, and presents a fictionalized account of the X-15 research rocket aircraft program, the test pilots who flew the aircraft, and the associated NASA community that supported the program.
There are no box office numbers available, but it is said that it had a short and poor theatrical run. Reviews were mixed, and Moore said she's not proud of the film.

Salt and Pepper (1965)

"Join the club."
His second film. It stars Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, Michael Bates, Ilona Rodgers and John Le Mesurier, and follows two nightclub owners finding themselves in trouble over a woman's death.
It received mixed reviews, and it earned $1.75 million in rentals.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $1,750,000 in rentals. ($17.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $1,750,000.

Lola (1970)

"It may be love... but it's definitely exhausting!"
His third film. It stars Charles Bronson and Susan George, and follows a 38-year-old writer of pornographic novels who meets and falls in love with a sixteen-year-old school girl whilst living in London.
There are no box office figures, but you can be sure of something: it was panned by everyone.

The Omen (1976)

"If something frightening happens to you today, think about it."
His fourth film. It stars Gregory Peck, Lee Remick, David Warner, Harvey Spencer Stephens, Billie Whitelaw, Patrick Troughton, Martin Benson, and Leo McKern. The film's plot follows Damien Thorn, a young child replaced at birth by his father, unbeknownst to his wife, after their biological child dies shortly after birth. As a series of mysterious events and violent deaths occur around the family and Damien enters childhood, they come to learn he is in fact the prophesied Antichrist.
Producer Harvey Bernhard came up with the idea for a film about the Antichrist after talking with one of his friends. WB was on board, but they later pulled out, so 20th Century Fox agreed to distribute the film. Donner favored an ambiguous reading of the script under which it would be left for the audience to decide whether Damien was the Antichrist or whether the series of violent deaths in the film were all just a string of unfortunate accidents. Seltzer rejected the ambiguity favored by Donner and pressed for an interpretation of his script that left no doubt for the audience that Damien Thorn was the Antichrist and that all of the deaths in the film were caused by the malevolent power of Satan, the interpretation that Bernhard chose to go with.
There were some... dark stories over the making of the film. Some aren't confirmed, but others are verified. So take the following with huge grains of salt.
In September 1975, Peck was flying to London, and during the flight, lightning struck the plane. Shortly after, executive producer Mace Neufeld's plane was also struck by lightning while en route to Los Angeles. That's twice in a span of only a few weeks. Then, writer David Seltzer's plane was also struck by lightning. And, while filming in Rome, lightning narrowly missed striking Bernhard. Lightning may never strike twice, but four times, and to different people whose only six degrees of separation at the time was The Omen? Oh, it gets even creepier. A scene was postponed, which meant Peck was not needed on the set, so a private jet that the crew was going to charter to bring Peck in was not necessary. The next day, it was reported that the plane they had intended to book hit a flock of birds and crashed, killing everyone on board.
Neufeld, probably already on edge after his plane was struck by lightning, was planning to eat at a restaurant nearby, but it was hit by an IRA bombing. The day after filming, the hotel that Donner had stayed at was also bombed.
John Richardson, the set designer, created a particularly macabre scene where a character dies from decapitation resulting from an automobile accident. While in Holland in August 1976, Richardson and his assistant, Liz Moore, were struck by a freakishly unfortunate fate. They fell victims to a head-on-collision, where Moore was cut in half, in similar fashion to the one Richardson had designed for the film. It happened in a Friday the 13th, near a road sign which says: ā€œOmmen, 66.6 km.ā€
Does that send you shivers down your spine?
Is all of this true? I... I'm not sure. I don't fully believe it. But I also don't fully not believe it. Whatever the case, it's truly one of the most insane behind-the-scenes stuff.
After a slate of weak films, Donner finally got his big break here. The film earned $78 million worldwide, becoming a huge box office success. While it initially received mixed reviews, its reputation grew with time and it has been named as one of the best horror films of the 1970s. It would spawn a franchise, but Donner didn't return for the director's chair. Why? He was preparing for something super.
  • Budget: $2,800,000.
  • Domestic gross: $60,922,980. ($335.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $78,722,980.

Superman (1978)

"You'll believe a man can fly."
His fifth film. Based on the DC Comics character, it stars Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Christopher Reeve, Jeff East, Margot Kidder, Glenn Ford, Phyllis Thaxter, Jackie Cooper, Trevor Howard, Marc McClure, Terence Stamp, Valerie Perrine, Ned Beatty, Jack O'Halloran, Maria Schell, and Sarah Douglas. It depicts the origin of Superman, including his infancy as Kal-El of Krypton, son of Jor-El, and his youthful years in the rural town of Smallville. Disguised as reporter Clark Kent, he adopts a mild-mannered disposition in Metropolis and develops a romance with Lois Lane while battling the villainous Lex Luthor.
Ilya Salkind had first conceived the idea for a Superman film in late 1973, and he bought the rights with his father Alexander the following year. DC wanted a list of actors that were to be considered for Superman, and approved the producer's choices of Muhammad Ali, Al Pacino, James Caan, Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood and Dustin Hoffman. The filmmakers felt it was best to film Superman and Superman II back-to-back, and to make a negative pickup deal with Warner Bros. To show how serious he was, Alexander hired Mario Puzo (The Godfather) and paid him $600,000 to write the script.
Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, William Friedkin, Richard Lester, Peter Yates, John Guillermin, Ronald Neame and Sam Peckinpah were in negotiations to direct. Ilya wanted to hire Steven Spielberg to direct, but Alexander was skeptical, feeling it was best to "wait until [Spielberg's] big fish opens." His film, Jaws, became the highest grossing film ever, and the Salkinds offered him the job, but by that point Spielberg chose to make Close Encounters of the Third Kind instead. Guy Hamilton was hired, but left before filming due to legal issues. After seeing The Omen, the producers offered the job to Donner. He was planning to direct the Omen sequel, but decided to take Superman instead. Donner was dissatisfied with the campy script and brought in Tom Mankiewicz to perform a rewrite to start from scratch. According to Mankiewicz, "not a word from the Puzo script was used."
Before Donner signed, the film already cast Marlon Brando as Jor-El in 1975. And his terms were insane; top billing, a salary of $3.7 million and 11.75% of the box office gross profits (totaling $19 million), and his scenes had to be filmed in 12 days. He also refused to memorize his dialogue, so cue cards were compiled across the set. Hackman was cast as Lex Luthor days later, getting a $2 million salary. The filmmakers made it a priority to shoot all of Brando's and Hackman's footage "because they would be committed to other films immediately."
The first plan was for a famous star to play Superman, although Robert Redford, Burt Reynolds, Sylvester Stallone and Paul Newman all declined. When Donner signed, he decided to get an unknown actor. Reeve was suggested, but Donner and the producers felt he was too young and skinny. When other actors weren't convincing, they decided to give a screen test to Reeve. They wanted him to wear a muscle suit, but Reeve instead decided to take a strict physical exercise regime headed by David Prowse. After gaining enough weight, he was cast. Compared to Brando and Hackman, Reeve was paid just $250,000 for Superman and its sequel.
Filming began in March 1977, and it lasted 19 months because they were filming two films. The budget was $55 million ($303 million adjusted), which made it the most expensive film by that point. Warner Bros. only planned to distribute the film in North America, but was so impressed by the Krypton sequence, that they decided to distribute it worldwide. It was supposed to last eight months, but there were conflicts on set.
Donner had tensions with the Salkinds and producer Pierre Spengler concerning the escalating production budget and the shooting schedule. Richard Lester, who worked with the Salkinds on The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers, was then brought in as a temporary co-producer to mediate the relationship between Donner and the Salkinds, who by now were refusing to talk to each other. On his relationship with Spengler, Donner remarked, "At one time if I'd seen him, I would have killed him." Due to this, they decided to stop filming back-to-back with the sequel, and Donner was assigned to finish the first film. By that point, 75% was already shot by Donner.
The film opened with $7.4 million in its first weekend, despite playing at just 508 theaters, breaking a record for Warner Bros. As it expanded, it earned $10.3 million in its third weekend, which was the biggest weekend in history. Through the December 22-28 week, it earned a colossal $18.5 million, a figure that no film achieved in just 7 days. It eventually closed its domestic run with $134 million. And WB was right in believing in its worldwide prospects, as the film earned a huge $300 million, becoming their highest grossing film.
The film also received critical acclaim, and it has been named as one of the best films of the 1970s. It won a Special Oscar for its Visual Effects. The film was deemed a cultural landmark for comic books, and it has been proclaimed by many as perhaps the most influential comic book film ever. For the world finally believed that, indeed, a man could fly.
With this, Superman was finally an icon on the big screen. While Donner filmed 75% of Superman II, he was controversially fired before resuming his duties. There would be more Superman films in subsequent years (including one next year), but none have captured the cultural zeitgeist that this one achieved.
  • Budget: $55,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $134,478,449. ($646.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $300,478,449.

Inside Moves (1980)

"It'll make you feel good, and that ain't bad."
His sixth film. Based on the novel by Todd Walton, it stars John Savage, David Morse, Diana Scarwid, and Amy Wright. It follows a man who became crippled after a failed suicide attempt, and he turns to drink, favoring a local dive bar frequented by the handicapped. There, he befriends the bartender, an ex-basketball player saving up for corrective surgery in hopes of returning to the court, and meets a kind young lady who aids him with his physical and mental rehabilitation.
Donner states that he agreed to direct the film only to take his mind off being fired and replaced from Superman II. He referred to the film as "the smallest film I could do that was just very near and dear to me, at that point, and I felt this is going to take my mind totally off that."
It received mixed reviews, and made just $1.2 million at the box office.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $1,200,000. ($4.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $1,200,000.

The Toy (1982)

"When Jackie Gleason told his son he could have any present he wanted, he picked the most outrageous gift of all... Richard Pryor."
His seventh film. The film stars Richard Pryor, Jackie Gleason and Scott Schwartz, and follows a janitor at a department store. The owner's son is told that he may have anything in the toy department. He chooses the janitor, who the owner pays to spend a week with the boy.
The film was panned by critics, and was named as one of the worst films of the year. But with $47 million at the box office, it was still a success.
  • Budget: $17,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $47,118,057. ($153 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $47,118,057.

The Goonies (1985)

"Join the adventure."
His eighth film. The film stars Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, Ke Huy Quan, John Matuszak, Anne Ramsey, Robert Davi, Joe Pantoliano and Mary Ellen Trainor. In the film, a group of kids who live in the "Goon Docks" neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon, attempt to save their homes from foreclosure and, in doing so, they discover an old treasure map that takes them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th-century pirate. During the adventure, they are pursued by a family of criminals who want the treasure for themselves.
Donner noted both the difficulties and pleasures of working with so many child actors. He praised them for their energy and excitement, but also said that they were also unruly when brought together. While Donner is credited as the director, some have referred to producer Steven Spielberg as co-director.
The film received a great response, and after a slate of weak films, Donner bounced back with a much needed box office hit. The film was very influential, and it helped launch the careers of many of its stars.
  • Budget: $19,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $63,711,145. ($185.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $124,311,145.

Ladyhawke (1985)

"A magical adventure."
His ninth film. The film stars Matthew Broderick, Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer. The story is about a young thief who becomes unwillingly involved with a warrior and his lady who are hunted by the Bishop of Aquila. As he learns about the couple's past and secret, he chooses to help them overcome the Bishop's forces, and to lift an infernal curse.
It received mixed reviews, and it failed to recoup its $20 million budget.
  • Budget: $20,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $18,432,000. ($53.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $18,432,000.

Lethal Weapon (1987)

"Two cops. Glover carries a weapon. Gibson is one. He's the only L.A. cop registed as a..."
His tenth film. It stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Gary Busey, Tom Atkins, Darlene Love, and Mitchell Ryan. The film follows a pair of mismatched LAPD detectives ā€” Martin Riggs, a former Green Beret who has become suicidal following the death of his wife, and veteran officer and family man Roger Murtaugh ā€” who work together as partners.
Recent UCLA graduate Shane Black wrote the screenplay in mid-1985. Black stated that his intention was to do an "urban western" inspired by Dirty Harry where a violent character "reviled for what he did, what he is capable of, the things he believed in" is eventually recruited for being the one that could solve the problem. His first draft was quite different from the final film; it was darker in tone and it included massive action scale sequences. The ending of the script contained a chase scene with helicopters and a trailer truck full of cocaine exploding over Hollywood Hills with cocaine snowing over the Hollywood sign.
The script was rejected by some studios, but Warner Bros. took an interest. Producer Joel Silver was brought in and worked with Black to further develop the script. Donner also brought in writer Jeffrey Boam to do some uncredited re-writes on Black's script after he found parts of it to be too dark. Donner got Gibson involved, while someone else suggested Danny Glover. After a successful screen test, the film was greenlit.
The film was a huge hit, earning $120 million worldwide and continued launching the careers of Gibson and Glover, even if they already had a few recognizable titles by that point. It also received very positive reviews, and was another prime example of the buddy cop genre. Another Donner W.
  • Budget: $15,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $65,207,127. ($179.9 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $120,207,127.

Scrooged (1988)

"The spirits will move you in odd and hysterical ways."
His 11th film. Based on the novella A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, it stars Bill Murray, Karen Allen, John Forsythe, John Glover, Bobcat Goldthwait, Carol Kane, Robert Mitchum, Michael J. Pollard, and Alfre Woodard. The film is a modern retelling that follows Frank Cross, a cynical and selfish television executive who is visited by a succession of ghosts on Christmas Eve intent on helping him regain his Christmas spirit.
After Ghostbusters, Murray only took a brief appearance in Little Shop of Horrors and chose to take a break. When he did feel a desire to return to acting, he said the "scripts were just not that good", and he returned to the this project as he found the idea of making a funny Scrooge appealing. Murray was paid $6 million for his role. He helped the writers, Mitch Glazer and Michael O'Donoghue, in rewriting.
Murray struggled with a scene where he reveals his redemption live on TV. Wanting a central acting moment, however, Murray gave an emotional and intense performance, deviating from his marked positions and improvising his speech. Glazer and O'Donoghue thought that the actor was suffering a mental breakdown. After he was finished, the crew applauded Murray, but O'Donoghue remarked "What was that? The Jim Jones hour?" Donner turned and punched O'Donoghue in the arm, leaving him bruised for a week.
Despite the commitment, however, there was drama behind the scenes. Murray said that while he was enjoying the experience of the script and having fun as "the meanest person in the world", he found the production "sloppy" and has expressed unhappiness with the final cut. For his part, O'Donoghue later said that Donner did not understand comedy, omitting the script's subtler elements for louder and faster moments. He estimated that only 40% of his and Glazer's original script made it into the final film and the surviving content was "twisted". Murray was also not content with Donner, "Scrooged could have been a really, really great movie. The script was so good... He kept telling me to do things louder, louder, louder. I think he was deaf." Donner, meanwhile, has a much more positive memory of Murray, calling him "superbly creative but occasionally difficult - as difficult as any actor."
The film received polarizing reactions, particularly for the tone. But as it was Murray's follow-up to Ghostbusters, it made $100 million worldwide, making it a box office success. In subsequent years, it has become a Christmas classic.
  • Budget: $32,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $60,328,558. ($159.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $100,328,558.

Lethal Weapon 2 (1989)

"The magic is back."
His 12th film. The second installment in the Lethal Weapon franchise, it stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Joss Ackland, Derrick O'Connor and Patsy Kensit. In the film, Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh protect an irritating federal witness, Leo Getz, while taking on a gang of South African drug dealers hiding behind diplomatic immunity.
After the first film's success, Joel Silver asked Shane Black to write a sequel. Although he was struggling with personal issues, Black still managed to write the first draft along with his friend, novelist Warren Murphy. Although many people thought that their script was brilliant, it was rejected by Silver, Donner and the studio for being too dark and bloody, and because in the ending of the script Riggs dies, while they wanted to keep him alive in case of further sequels. They also wanted the second film to focus more on comedy, while Black's draft focused more on courage and heroics, like Riggs willing to die to protect Murtaugh and his family, due to his love for them.
When his script was rejected, Black felt that he had failed the producers. Black refused to re-write the script and quit from the project after working for six months on it. Black later said how the problem with the second film was that they did too much comedy, and how he dislikes the third and fourth films because of the way Riggs's character was changed. Donner got Jeffrey Boam back to rewrite, and one of the biggest changes was expanding Leo Getz's character.
The film received very great reviews, and saw a big increase from the original, earning $227 million worldwide.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $147,253,986. ($372.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $227,853,986.

Radio Flyer (1992)

"Powered by imagination."
His 13th film. The film stars Lorraine Bracco, John Heard, Elijah Wood, Joseph Mazzello, Adam Baldwin, and Ben Johnson and is narrated by Tom Hanks. Two young boys try to transform their toy into an airplane after their stepfather turns abusive. They wish to escape the physical abuse and fly away to safety.
The film received negative reviews, and it barely got 10% of its budget. Luckily for Donner, he had another film for that year.
  • Budget: $35,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $4,651,977. ($10.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $4,651,977.

Lethal Weapon 3 (1992)

"The magic is back again."
His 14th film. The third installment in the Lethal Weapon franchise, it stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Rene Russo, and Stuart Wilson. In the film, Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh pursue Jack Travis, a former LAPD lieutenant turned ruthless arms dealer, during the six days prior to Murtaugh's retirement. Riggs and Murtaugh are joined by Leo Getz as well as internal affairs Sergeant Lorna Cole.
Jeffrey Boam's first two drafts of the script were different from the final film. The character of Lorna for example was not a woman in original drafts, but the original character still had the same personality and was just as lethal and crazy as Riggs, making him his match. Riggs also had an affair with Roger's daughter Rianne, and a few parts in the final film where Roger suspects that Riggs and Rianne are interested in each other are only parts left from the original drafts. Donner demanded some big changes on the script which included changing the original character of Lorna into a woman and turning her into Riggs's girlfriend. He also re-worked the script to be less story-oriented and not focus on the main villains but instead on the relationship between Riggs and Murtaugh. He also toned down action scenes from the script and brought back Leo Getz into the story. All of his scenes were written in afterwards.
The film received mixed reviews and was considered as weaker than the previous films. But it still earned $320 million worldwide, becoming the highest grossing film in the franchise and Donner's highest grossing film (although Superman still has that title adjusted for inflation).
  • Budget: $35,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $144,731,527. ($323.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $321,731,527.

Maverick (1994)

"In their hands, a deck of cards was the only thing more dangerous than a gun."
His 15th film. Based on the 1957ā€“1962 television series, it stars Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster and James Garner (who starred in the original series). The film follows Bret Maverick, a card player and con artist who collects money in order to enter a high-stakes poker game. He is joined in his adventure by Annabelle Bransford, another con artist, and Marshal Zane Cooper, a lawman.
The film received positive reviews, and was another great success at the box office, earning $183 million worldwide.
  • Budget: $75,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $101,631,272. ($215 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $183,031,272.

Assassins (1995)

"In the shadows of life, in the business of death, one man found a reason to live..."
His 16th film. The film stars Sylvester Stallone, Antonio Banderas, and Julianne Moore. Professional hit-man Robert Rath wants to fulfill a few more contracts before retiring but unscrupulous ambitious newcomer hit-man Miguel Bain keeps killing Rath's targets.
The film was panned by critics, and was a box office flop.
  • Budget: $50,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $30,303,072. ($62.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $83,306,268.

Conspiracy Theory (1997)

"Jerry Fletcher sees conspiracies everywhere... one has turned out to be true. Now his enemies want him dead. And she's the only one he can trust."
His 17th film. It stars Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts and Patrick Stewart, and centers on an eccentric taxi driver who believes many world events are triggered by government conspiracies, and the Justice Department attorney who becomes involved in his life.
The film received mixed reviews, and despite earning $137 million worldwide, it wasn't a box office success due to its high budget.
  • Budget: $80,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $75,982,834. ($148.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $136,982,834.

Lethal Weapon 4 (1998)

"The gang's all here."
His 18th film. The fourth and final installment in the Lethal Weapon franchise, it stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Rene Russo, Chris Rock, and Jet Li. It follows Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh as they investigate a Chinese immigrant smuggling ring. A crime boss named Benny Chan leads them to the Chinatown.
Wanting another film in the franchise, Warner Bros. and Joel Silver tried buying a new spec script titled Simon Says in hopes of rewriting it into a script for Lethal Weapon 4. Written by Jonathan Hensleigh, the story was about a police detective and a shop owner forced to find and stop bombs planted all over a city as part of a mad bomber's revenge plot against the detective. 20th Century Fox then bought the script, and decided to use it as the basis for a new Die Hard film, Die Hard with a Vengeance. Donner was committed to another film, but Gibson was not interested.
The film had a very difficult pre-production, as the script was still being re-written and rejected. Silver ultimately brought in TV writer Channing Gibson to work on the script, after he was impressed by Gibson's rewrite of a spec script titled Sandblast. Gibson took the gig thinking it would be a more relaxed writing job than anything he did for TV. However, much like the previous two sequels, the script kept getting changed and rewritten over and over again. Gibson would end up doing more work and revisions on it than on all of his TV work put together. Production even started with only half of the script.
Something you might have noticed, is that the budget was far larger than the previous films. While the previous two films cost $30-$35 million, Lethal Weapon 4 had a budget of... $150 million ($288 million adjusted). Which means that at that point, it was the most expensive R-rated film ever and the third most expensive film, just behind Titanic and Waterworld. Why? Because the delays kept coming... but Warner Bros. was desperate in greenlighting the film. Realizing they had no big tentpole releases scheduled for summer 1998, Warner Bros. finally greenlit the film in late 1997. So they opened all their wallets and started shooting in January 1998, despite having one third of the film not written yet, including the ending. Due to issues during filming, including the script changes, production ended around mid May, less than two months before its scheduled July release. The ending was not written until it was finally time to film it. Editors had to work very quickly to have the film ready, which is why the trailers feature some deleted and alternate scenes which are not in the film. So the film was greenlit, filmed and released in theaters in the span of just 7 months.
The film received mixed reviews. And if Warner Bros. was confident that spending $150 million to rush a film was worth it, they were in for a rude awakening. The film earned just $285 million worldwide, which meant that the film was a box office flop.
It was the last film in the franchise. Although a gang in a pub in Philadelphia kept the spirit alive by making three sequels, one of which had Danny DeVito as the bad guy.
  • Budget: $150,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $130,444,603. ($250.9 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $285,444,603.

Timeline (2003)

"You're history."
His 19th film. Based on the novel by Michael Crichton, it stars Paul Walker, Frances O'Connor, Gerard Butler, Billy Connolly, David Thewlis, and Anna Friel. It follows a team of present-day archaeology and history students who are sent back in time to medieval France to rescue their professor from the middle of a battle.
The film was a critical and commercial failure.
  • Budget: $80,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,481,943. ($33.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $43,935,763.

16 Blocks (2006)

"1 Witness... 118 Minutes."
His 20th and final film. It stars Bruce Willis, Mos Def, and David Morse. The film unfolds in the real time narration method, and follows Jack, who is assigned the task of escorting Eddie, a witness, from police custody to the courthouse. However, when they are attacked on the way, Jack learns that the entire NYPD wants Eddie dead.
The film received mixed reviews, and it marked his fifth bomb in a row. It was his final film before his death in 2021.
  • Budget: $52,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $36,895,141. ($57.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $65,664,721.

The Verdict

Despite the inconsistency of his filmography, it's hard to deny Donner as a very influential figure of cinema.
He was an expert in handling many genres; you'd expect the director of The Goonies to make 4 Lethal Weapon films? Or that the guy who made The Omen would make Scrooged? Sure, his last films indicated that he might have lost it, but you can't blame him for trying. The fact that he was willing to make Lethal Weapon 5 before his death show he was very committed. He was never too old for this shit.
And of course, there's Superman. The film that changed comic book films as we know them. It wasn't the first, but it was perhaps the most influential. There's an argument that either Batman, The Dark Knight, Iron Man, The Avengers, Deadpool or Joker are more influential, but those films wouldn't exist today if it wasn't for Donner. It's why Kevin Feige shows the film to all the cast and crew before filming any MCU film. If the film was put in the careless hands of a mediocre director, it would've been forgotten almost immediately. And the genre would be very different today. So it's a testament to the strength of the film of how much it could change the landscape of what was possible. He and Christopher Reeve really offered something fresh and exciting. They truly made the world believe a man could fly.
Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Ang Lee. A very important filmmaker.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. Well, we'll later talk about... Roland Emmerich. Is it Joever for him?
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
June 3-9 Ang Lee What happened to Lee?
June 10-16 Zack Snyder RIP Inbox.
June 17-23 Tony Scott Action films have not been the same ever since his death.
June 24-30 Roland Emmerich The King of disaster films.
Who should be next after Emmerich? That's up to you. But there's a catch.
For this week, you'll choose from four options, all picked by me. So we won't accept any other suggestions this week. I'll give you four directors, and the director with the most upvotes will get his own post. And here they are:
  • Joe Dante: Like Donner, a very influential figure of the 70s and 80s.
  • Renny Harlin: One of the most popular directors with the biggest amount of flops. How does he do it?
  • John McTiernan: An important action filmmaker... who literally went to jail.
  • Rob Reiner: Another actor who had an incredible run as a director, before falling with North.
So which one should be next? That's up to you.

Iā€™m pretty much in the worst spot ever. So I went to an awesome high school and did well, however my senior year was the hardest year for me, my parents were on the brink of divorce and I was working part time right after school. Because of this, I didnā€™t get into any colleges applied to. This shot me down the most depressive couple months of my life where I had hoped college would help me and I could be on my own, no I had to attend community college and still live at home. Anyway I had hopes to transfer for my junior year but I was also rejected from the schools I applied to. Iā€™m not sure what Iā€™m doing wrong. Granted I didnā€™t do my best with the applications and Iā€™m sure if I really lock in, I could do pretty good. I have a 3.73 gpa and Iā€™m an engineering major. Iā€™m guaranteed to transfer to the university of Florida by spring semester but my dream school has always been Stanford d school. I love art and design and ive loved incorporating engineering into my fashion projects to create mechanical clothing. Anyway, I just wanted some advice on anything I could do that could give me a boost or good schools I can apply to either for spring or fall 2025 that would accept me. Also anything I should do to boost my profile. Iā€™m also an immigrant from Algeria and France and Iā€™ve loved art and design my whole life and studying engineering has been my dream. I jusy wish I could apppy myself because I envisioned myself being in a much better spot at this point. Iā€™ve always been an excellent student so I just feel like Iā€™ve wasted my potential. Any tips anyone?

I then transitioned to a broad spectrum of skills acquired through the passion of game creation on Roblox - Formerly a Lead Developer for an indie game studio known as 'Interbyte Studios', which was a project known for creating fun games for children, that gathered 1 million supporters, and over 75 million game plays through a platform known as Roblox. These games generated a collective $70KUSD over the course of their popularity combined (20% of revenue was cycled back as advertisement funding). Through this community that was developed, we were able to raise over $6.5KUSD to help fund small indie projects from other smaller development groups. - Among many other games I created music for, one in particular is worth noting: 'Doors', amassing 4.9 Billion plays since 2021, has reached the screen of nearly every kid that is playing video games today. - Collaborated with popular online celebrities (YouTube, TikTok) on making games and experiences for their communities, some of which have billions of views and millions of followers. - I am a contributor to other popular games and projects with 2.6 Billion collective plays. I fulfilled various roles in these projects, such as game design, Front and Back-End programming (Luau/Lua 5.5+ & Typescript), 3D Artwork/Video Animation (using programs Blender, Photoshop, Premiere Pro/Sony Vegas, and After Effects), Music Design, Character & Object Animation, Architecture, and Voice Acting. Many of these games are a major source of income for the developers involved, such as "My Restaurant!" (of which I did 3D & 2D graphic design for), a game with ~800M plays, created by a studio known as BIG Games, which is the highest grossing development group on the platform. I connected to these groups and Studios through the Roblox Dev Forum, a company known as "Hidden Developers", Twitter, and my personal website. Through these projects, I nurtured my passion to create, and developed several solo passion projects for my own personal enjoyment. - Although my game development has slowed, I am currently working on a large game that will show the hardship of Schizophrenia and Social Outcasting through intricate storytelling. I intend to release this game on multiple platforms, such as Steam. - Created a Roblox Plug-in that detects Backdoors and vulnerabilities within games, preserving user data and game integrity. This plug-in has been used by nearly 300 developers thus far. - Created my own file syncing program using C++ via Visual Studio Code, that analyzes computer folders for identical information and can delete it or sync data from one folder to another (if not identical). This program has been used by my friends, but I did not publish it online. - Created a Discord Bot with custom commands for the Interbyte Studios Community server (18k members). This application allowed the community to interact and have a recreational token and minigame system for engagement and bonding. This bot was initially created in Python, but was then completely revamped in Javascript via Node.js (with some minor html for some special features.) - CPR and AED Certified - I intend to commit to the military (AFROTC) on a 4-6 year contract following graduation/obtaining desired degree
Awards & Honor Groups: - x2 Academic Letter, Top PreACT at School - Thespy Award for Music in Indie Film - Outstanding Solo-Ensemble Award w/ 1st Place for self-composed, led, and performed Marimba Duet - Superior (1) Rating at District Music Contest for Marimba Duet - x1 Music Letter - Outstanding Jazz Soloist Drums at State - Outstanding Jazz Soloist Piano at State - Nominated Ambassador of Music (International Program) - All-State Jazz + Concert Band - All-City Percussion - [College] Jazz Band Performer - State Finalist VEX Robotics - Runner-Up Semi-Finalist VEX World Robotics (Nationals) - Robotics Notebook Awards - Honor Thespian
I am very new to the whole college admissions thing and I've been doing all of this for my own ambition up until recently when I started to realize I need to focus on college. (My family hasn't pushed college, so again, it's all on me.) I intend to do another internship/apprenticeship in the future. If I don't have good chances for USC, what other highly ranked colleges would I have a shot at?
