2024.06.02 09:38 lauraintacoma Trouble Getting Applicants to Follow the Posting Requirement

I recently posted a job on LinkedIn today. My first time. I'm not a recruiter, just a small creative business. We got almost 100 applicants in the first day, but not one of them followed the "Additional Requirements" section that asked for a two to three paragraph cover letter and writing sample attached to their resume via "Easy Apply". Is this fairly normal? Should we not be asking for additional requirements or are job seekers just applying to everything without reading the whole job posting?

2024.06.02 07:36 AnthonyMetivier How to Study

The most effective study methods for academic success boil down to:
Time management
There are countless time management techniques, but one beautiful thing about going to school is that a lot of your time is managed for you.
The week and when you need to be in class is arranged.
Professors tell you when assignments are due, etc.
Heck, when I was in university they even gave us calendars for use to write in our due dates.
So the number one thing is to combine what you know with the tools everyone has: the calendar.
In many cases, you can also get advanced notices from professors by simply talking to them before the semester even begins.
You would also do well to explore techniques like the Eisenhower Matrix, time blocking and the Pareto Principle.
Above all, make time management something you study unto itself.
There's no one-size-fits-all approach. But those who study it as the discipline it is will win.
Study Environment Optimization
Studying effectively cannot be random or subject to interruptions.
If you have to study on transit, invest in custom ear plugs of the kind musicians use, not noise-cancelling headphones that will put you at risk in the case of an emergency. Custom ear plugs have filters that let you still hear without being bothered by shrill noises and you can switch between light and heavy filters.
Having multiple study locations worked out in advance is a great strategy because you can walk between them and percolate your thoughts – literally remembering more by simply getting in a bit of exercise. I used to call this "Road Work" when I was in university.
When at home, put a "Do not disturb" sign on your door. Make it clear to others that you are studying and train them to respect the hours you want to put it. Do not compromise. It's your future.
Note-Taking Strategies
There are many different kinds of note-taking methods. My fave is to use Zettelkasten in combination with Memory Palaces.
These two videos detail how the Zettelkasten Method operates in combination with the Memory Palace technique:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIQRiqQFKQY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrN0kaE6DkY
Memory techniques
Like time management, the topic of memory improvement is huge. Make sure to spend a good three months learning all of its ins-and-outs.
The key techniques you'll want to master are:
The Memory Palace A Alphabet System (or pegword system) A Number System (usually based on the Major System) A Symbol System A Spaced Repetition system
These accelerated learning techniques may feel like you're building an airport in the beginning, but think about it:
You do need airports to launch and land planes as effectively and efficiently as possible. It's the same with memory techniques.
You can also do yourself a favor and learn more about memory science. It will teach you about how the mind and memory work and give you ideas that will only arise if you know a little bit about what researchers have found.
Stress Management For Students
Don't make my mistake. I drank like a fish and ate poorly throughout university. This meant that a lot of the experience was lost to depression.
Sure, memory techniques helped… but I can't help but imagine how much more successful I would have been during and after if I'd had better ways of coping with the stress.
Diet, fitness, mindfulness practices, time off with friends for positive and healthy recreation. This is not complicated, though when you're young, impulsivity can certainly make it seem that way.
Exam Preparation Strategies
This basically comes back to properly using your calendar and memory techniques.
For the benefits of what is sometimes called state-dependent or context-dependent memory, it can be useful to study where you will take your exams. It's advisable to use Memory Palaces based on these exam rooms whenever possible.
(Those terms are the kinds of insider memory hacks you'll enjoy only when you understand your memory science, and there are many more that can help you with your exam prep.)
Take mock tests as much as you can. Reflect on what you're learning often. Talk about it with other students.
Don't cram and avoid wasting time on the fantasy that there are any "subject-specific study tips." Maybe if you're in nursing school and need to have patient bodies in specific position, but generally tests are about words, numbers and symbols. Learn how to commit them to memory and talk as much as you can about the information so it is well-exercised before you sit for your exams.
Form Effective Study Groups
There are many benefits to group study if you can select solid group members. This can be tricky, but one way to do it involves a slightly involved strategy:
Try to be part of a club or association. I was president of the English Undergraduate Student Association at York University in Toronto, for example. This drew precisely the right people because anyone who wanted to be part of the association already loved English Literature by default.
After you find the right members, it's just a matter of scheduling regular meetings based on decent agendas and following reasonable time limits so you don't burn out.
One thing my fave study group in university did a lot was to share reading. In other words, we'd each tackle an article or book and then present on it.
Ultimately, you still have to do the reading yourself, but it forms a nice mental framework that makes reading faster and easier when someone you can speak with has summarized the core ideas. These days, you can search YouTube and podcasts for this kind of summarization much of the time, but it's still not the same as being in a study group with other people.
You also get experience with peer teaching and tutoring this way, which is hugely beneficial for your memory. Even if you never intend to teach yourself, the simple effort that goes into preparing and delivering short presentations will benefit you in the short-term for your exams and long-term in your career. Collaborative learning also gives you something powerful to put on your resume, especially if your study group is linked with a formal university institution or group.
Work On Your Reading And Comprehension Skills
The main shortcut here is to simply read a lot, boost your vocabulary as you go by memorizing terms and write summaries as much as you can.
Doesn't sound like a shortcut, I know. But it really is. It helps develop pattern recognition and that's how you ultimately wind up quickly assessing the key points and inferring many things correctly.
Be humble, though. Mistakes will always happen, so be willing to go back and read things again.
Another key aspect of reading is to challenge yourself. Get outside of your comfort zone and read above your level at least a few times a week.
Don't worry about whether you understand what you're reading or not. Soon, moments of insight will arise.
Even if it doesn't happen soon, rest assured that will. There are aspects of philosophy that didn't come clear to me until after 30 years of reading. I'm not ashamed of this at all. I just haven't read and reflected enough to connect the dots. But if I had read above my level sooner, I probably would have had the insights sooner.
Motivation and Discipline
Technically, motivation is not necessary when you have systems. That's what discipline is all about.
That said, it's useful to know about intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. These will be arranged differently in different people as some people respond well to threats of pain whereas others respond better to promises of reward.
Know thyself.
Hire a coach if you have to, as it will be worth it in the end. Many exist and some universities have behavioral science programs, learning disability labs and other institutions where you can learn more directly about these issues.
Finally, you can learn about the difference between tonic and phasic dopamine relative to how the Default Mode Network of your brain is in a kind of battle with the Task Positive Network. This area is kind of heavy on the brain science, but well worth an afternoon or two to figure out the implications in your life.
Just watch out: When optimizing your dopamine levels for motivation, you could wind up enlightened and have your ego make you think you're better than everyone else… which would not be enlightenment. But it'll sure feel that way.
That's why the next category is so important.
Make Time To Learn Critical Thinking
A lot of education involves humans who weigh what they teach and how they teach it based on subjective agendas. It's pretty difficult for anyone not to do that.
When you spend some time developing your critical thinking skills, you'll be able to determine when teachers and writers/video creators, etc. are being too subjective or otherwise slaves to any number of cognitive biases.
Likewise, you'll be able to spot them in yourself and weed many of them out before they can distract you.
The simplest way to use critical thinking while studying is to put Why, Where, When, Who and How up on a Memory Wheel and constantly rotate through it.
As you learn more about different thinkers, you can also start to ask, "What would Freud say about this? What would Skinner say? What would x say?"
To do this, study as many of the sciences and Liberal Arts as you possibly can. If you don't know where to start, go through the Trivium and then the Quadrivium. Knowing how to think through those seven lenses and ask what the major figures in each field would generally say will help you "triangulate" just about any issue and think both objectively and subjectively about it and know which is which.
Self-Assessment And Improvement
Ultimately, the best judge of your progress is you.
To make sure you're giving yourself good materials to judge yourself by, journal, ideally daily.
If you can, keep two journals:
A snapshot journal that simply lists what you did on a particular day.
A discursive journal where you reflect on your thoughts about how things went.
There are many formal products you can buy that will help you journal in particular ways. The Freedom Journal has been one of my faves, but the real tip is to experiment with as many journaling styles as you can in the two main styles I just mentioned.
As you can tell, there's not that much when it comes to embracing a wide number of learning strategies. Apply these tips to the study resources you need to cover on your way to the exam room and you'll do well.
Take Care Around Technology And Studying
There are tons of apps that can help "gamify" these activities, but at the end of the day, gamification is really just a mental metaphor. If it doesn't work for you, find a better metaphor.
Nir Eyal discussion the power of mental metaphors based on some research in Indistractable and more on the matter is found in The Victorious Mind by yours truly. There was even recently a Duke University study showing just how powerful adopting mental metaphors can be for remembering information.
Academic success can indeed be enjoyable, and all the more so when you work out what will make it enjoyable and meaningful for you. Personalize as much of the journey as you can, constantly applying critical thinking to every suggestion you come across and all of your study experiences will become much, much more rewarding.

2024.06.02 07:25 Accomplished_Oil527 Sample collection for genetics study complete: What's next?

Dear patients, supporters, donors, and friends,
Exciting news: Our second scientific study has wrapped up its sample collection phase and is now in full swing.
Today marks a significant milestone as we've successfully collected blood samples from over 150 patients, with a third of this data already on its way to Dr. Alfonso Urbanucci and his team at The University of Tampere. While we may need to collect some samples again, we are now considering sample collection complete.
This achievement is the culmination of six years of dedicated work by PFS Network, our research group and volunteers.
Alongside our ongoing study at The University of Kiel, these milestones signify unparalleled progress towards understanding PFS and developing safe, effective treatments for patients. We're more hopeful than ever about what lies ahead.
This progress has been hard-fought and largely led by patients, some of whom are no longer with us. We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has contributed to reaching this point.

Patient Volunteers

A heartfelt thank you to all who have volunteered for our organisation. Your support forms the bedrock of our progress.
Special appreciation goes to the staff who initially volunteered to moderate the propeciahelp forum back in 2018. Despite the lack of recognition, their pivotal role paved the way for community-wide collaboration, resulting in significant achievements, including
These moderators facilitated a shift towards constructive, scientifically oriented discussions, steering our community platforms in a more productive direction.
We'd also like to extend our gratitude to everyone who has contributed to PFSN projects, whether through data analysis, SEO assistance, video editing, participant recruitment, media engagement, or other forms of support. Your contributions have been invaluable.

Donors

When we embarked on fundraising for our study at The University of Kiel in December 2021, we had modest expectations. The overwhelming response, reaching our 80,000 EUR target within four months, exceeded all expectations.
In total, our charity has raised nearly half a million euros over three years, a remarkable feat considering the grassroots nature of our fundraising efforts. These funds have supported two major projects and enabled us to hire our first PhD student. We are profoundly grateful to all who have contributed.
A special thanks to our major donors, who have generously provided the majority of our funding. Approximately 87% of our funds come from 'private donors,' including patient families, individual wealthy patients, and our first grant.
We also express gratitude to patient donors whose consistent support, though smaller in scale, has been invaluable.

Researchers & Clinicians

We've often expressed our gratitude for the exceptional team of researchers we're privileged to work with. What began as individual research endeavours has evolved into a comprehensive scientific advisory team comprising experts across various fields.
While we are immensely grateful for their support in launching these projects, we also recognise the contributions of others who have made these studies possible. This includes clinical support for patient and control tissue collection for the Kiel study, researchers who have previously published on the topic, and the teams supporting lead researchers at their institutions.

What's Next

Reflecting on our progress, it's essential to recognise the concerted effort it has required. Equally important is acknowledging the state of affairs before these advancements.
In 2018, cohesive patient participation platforms were scarce, clinical data was limited, and appropriate scientific research on the condition was lacking. The achievements of recent years are not accidental but the result of careful planning and thoughtful collaboration.
Throughout our journey, we've emphasised the importance of patience and practical, incremental steps towards understanding, recognition, and eventual treatments. We remind patients of the principles that got us here and urge you not to take this progress for granted.
As we move forward with both studies, our focus shifts to supporting researchers in their vital work. While we cannot provide detailed updates from the lab as frequently, rest assured we'll maintain regular communication, now on a quarterly basis instead.
Over the coming months, we'll continue consulting with our scientific advisory team, analysing incoming data, and exploring new projects to advance understanding and awareness of PFS.
To some, especially new patients, progress over the coming months may seem slow or non-existent. However, the most significant work is now underway.
We're cognizant that this could result in a situation reminiscent of 2018, characterised by a tendency towards quick solutions and increased complacency.
Please understand that our progress has been achievable only through broad cooperation and support of clearly defined, justified projects. We advise patients to carefully consider who they entrust to spearhead progress and meticulously assess any individual or group asking for their support.
Please remain active in driving progress forward, chiefly by backing our initiatives and motivating others to do the same. If you're currently contributing financially, please maintain your support to ensure timely commencement of potential new projects, when ready. Additionally, as advocated in our 2024 fundraising campaign, please continue to inspire your loved ones to contribute financially whenever feasible.
Thank you all for your unwavering dedication and support. Despite the road ahead, our optimism for the future has never been higher.

2024.06.02 06:56 Sea_Button6465 Will my internship offer be rescinded?

Back in March I was accepted to a 1-year MAcc program that starts this fall. About a month ago I was offered an internship position that starts in November. I’m in-progress on the last prereqs for the MAcc and doing really well (intermediate and auditing). I just found out the college that I’ve been accepted to for the MAcc now offers an accountancy certificate.
Comparing costs, I’d save $15k if I switch to the certificate. This is after accounting for Becker being provided in the MAcc, but I’d pay for it myself if I did the certificate. I’d also be done this December because there’s only 3 additional classes on the certificate than what I’ve already taken/in-progress (compared to summer 2025 for the MAcc). The certificate will fulfill CPA exam eligibility same as the MAcc. I’m feeling like a switch to the certificate is the obvious way to go.
My concern is that for the internship I’ve accepted to start this November, I had applied with the plan to do the MAcc and had it listed on my resume. If I switch to a certificate is it possible they would rescind my offer? Idk if they’d have even interviewed me if my resume said my plans were to do a certificate instead of masters. My plans to start CPA exams in spring 2025 would not change though, and maybe that’s all they care about?
Any advice would be appreciated!

2024.06.02 06:06 ParkingAd144 14yo cat has front leg flesh eating bacteria infection

Hi all,
I was going to post on catadvice but saw the no medical advice rule and thought here might be more appropriate.
Tldr: cats front leg is FUBAR from flesh eating bacteria; amputate or put down. Vet thinks he's got a good shot, and more life to give. Unsure if it is worth putting him through it, outlook looks grim from the limit resources online. Any advice, own experiences or input anyone can share?
Our 14yo male desexed mixed breed cat has been diagnosed with a flesh eating bacterial infection in his front left leg. Most of the tissue afrer his elbow joint is necrotic. We are going in tomorrow morning for either amputation, or euthenisation.
Unfortunately we only got the lab results Friday afternoon with very little opportunity to discuss the facts and stats with the vet, we are very ill prepared to make this decision (especially me).
An antibiotic injection was given 7 days after the first pink bump and swelling started, it is now 23 days in. The cat is quite healthy otherwise, except a heart murmur that has recently been discovered (will require assessment from a cardiologist). Arthritis is his only known health condition. Full blood and urine works were done, aerobic and anaerobic sample cultures and tissue samples were sent for testing. The urine testing revealed his live kidney function was on the highest range before it is considered unhealthy, suggested to be due to 2 weeks of being on anti inflammitories (meloxicam). In retrospect this appears to be a symptom of the infection also. 4 xrays have been done, 2 on the leg (separate days) and one on each half of his body. No abnormalities showed up (nor any indicators on blood tests). Cancer not suspected but the vet noted he cannot guarantee he doesn't have any, just the tests done did not reveal any.
He is progressively getting worse, the leg is almost entirely necrotic after his elbow. The fight in him has been remarkable, I don't think he's ready to go.
He is still very enthusiastic for food ( though has gone off dry food) he comes running up meowing and purring at food time. Until yesterday all waste was normal, but his poos have significantly reduced in size since yesterday. Regularitywise, it's been good. Resting heart rate is 84bpm seems wildly low, but did it twice with identical results. Breaths per minute is 32. He is very tolerant of our kids getting up in his face when they check on him Mobility however has significantly reduced. He barely leaves his new spot on a couch in an unused room.
My reservations is that from what I can find online, very few pets survive this. Though in the same articles, the majority forgoed treatment and opted for euthenising. And above all, i could barely find anything on it, and what was available is very uninformative for me. Is there any basic stats for acual treatment success rates? Does it being contained to leg increase his chances? Knowing nothing is guaranteed, but we need some sort of baseline. An "it might work" isn't the most comforting, nor helpful.
For me if it was 50/50 chance, there is no hesitation, I would go the amputation. My partner is not comfortable with 60% success likelihood, for her he is too far gone and think he's too old, it's too much for him to go through, it's time to let go etc. Given the disparity, we are concerned of a stalemate in the morning, trying to prepare as best we can.
Costs we can afford, but it's certainly not insignificant. Looking at almost $4000AUD, + cost for a needed teeth scaling, and obviously would then need to get that heart murmur diagnosed, so another $1600 for the cardiologist alone. About $3800 spent on this issue so far...definitely adding up
Seeking advice on: What would you do? What do you think is best for the cat? Do you know any statistics on survival rates of this treatment? We've been cautious, but should we be concerned of being infected by him?

2024.06.02 06:06 justgimmiethelight It always takes me a long time to find a job and bounce back

WARNING: this is very long so if you don't want to read a wall of text feel free to skip!
It’s always been like that for me. For some reason it takes me a LOT longer than my peers to find employment. I often find myself chronically unemployed (even though I have years of experience) for a year or more. To top it off I’m autistic and suffer from severe ADHD with anxiety and depression on top of it.
After I graduated university it took me a year to find a job. Had consistent employment for almost 4 years straight until 2018. During this period I actually had a job lined up before quitting.
Fast forward to 2018. Had a job as a software developer for a well known company (no it’s not FAANG) and they paid pretty well. It was the most money I ever made in my life. Unfortunately things didn’t work out there and the work environment and culture wasn’t for me. I was placed on a team as a new dev and they barely gave me any work. After awhile I hated going to work everyday cause everyone basically just ignored me and I spent most of my time self studying on my own. I found this job through their autism to work program. Before accepting the job I was told that I’d get support and accommodations with a mentor.
My “mentor” was basically useless. She didn’t do a damn thing and would cancel our one on one meetings half the time. Sometimes she wouldn’t even tell me at the last minute. She just never showed up. All she did was report negative feedback from my manager and provided no solutions or recommendations to improve. I was let go cause they felt like I “needed a lot of hand holding” lol. They barely gave me work to do. I would finish my assignments in a day or two max. They made some other bullshit complaints too. I showed up on time and did what I had to do every time. It was awful. I was far far away from home and lived out of state at the time also.
Lost my apartment and had to move back home with my family. Long term unemployment stint #1 begins here (if you don’t count how long it took me to find my first job you can say 2)
Fast forward to September 2019 and a friend recommended me a job as a software developer and finally moved out again. I taught myself HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP to the best of my ability. I was not only learning on the job but maintained their website, ran chron jobs, and troubleshooted issues with site functionality and even the web server. I was literally a one man show and to top it off was working for $15/hour. My boss was a prick and would sometimes short my coworker and me money on our checks. My coworker handled all the marketing and promotion. I handled everything related to the website.
Fast forward to June 2020. Of the two of us unfortunately I was the one laid off for whatever reason. My boss just called and said that they’re laying me off right in the middle of COVID. Since I wasn’t working I could no longer afford rent so I had to move back home. Then became super depressed and it took me a little over a year to find a job.
Fast forward to August 2021 and I found a job at a call center. Ended up getting fired and it was my fault sadly. Got fired for yelling and hanging up on a customer. That day I was in a really bad mood and the person on the other line started cursing me out and getting real disrespectful with me. I was happy to be fired. Worked there for only two weeks.
Four months later in December 2021 I landed a job that was closer to home but another shitty call center. Surprisingly I lasted there a year and a half. My mental health was already in the toilet and doing everything I could to hold onto this job for dear life so I sucked it up until I found another job. I wanted to get out that call center so badly since it was nothing but micromanagement and back to back calls.
June 2023 rolls around and I finally started my job in desktop support as a contractor. Offer letter said 6 month contract then when I read it found out it was a 3 month contract to hire and also found out that they shorted me a dollar on the agreed pay rate. I asked for $30/hour and they agreed to it only to find out they changed things last minute. Spoke to the recruiter about the discrepancies and was told that’s the best they can do so I said screw it and took it.
My recruiter told me that they would “definitely” be converting me at the end of the three months but sadly that never happened. I showed up on time everyday and did a good job according to my manager and everyone else (so they said). I even got good reviews from a number of clients I worked with. About two months in I noticed things began to go south. Had a small disagreement and misunderstanding with my manager on a ticket she said I messed up on for whatever reason. Long story short she said the ticket was urgent when nowhere on the ticket said there was a deadline and she made a huge stink about it. Not only did I receive few tickets to begin with but I had to share the one or two tickets I had with a bunch of interns so I barely had anything to do. My other coworkers had more tickets than me yet would rarely put the interns with them. It was always with me which in my head made no sense. I get a call from the recruiter saying that they’re ending my contract early. During the call I asked why and they said it was due to “performance reasons”. At that point I had two weeks left. I worked one of those weeks then one morning left the building during a meltdown. Left my badge, laptop and all their property on the desk and didn’t say a word to anyone. Been looking for work ever since. Sent out hundreds of resumes and so far only had 2 interviews which led to nothing despite both of them saying I did well and they liked me.
Hundreds of applications later and here I am with no job. I’m still looking for work and decided to also start a small business in the meantime. I started a month ago and only had 2 clients so far. Still no luck with applications. I’m 35 now and had to move back home during the pandemic and been here ever since after living on my own for years.
I’m very thankful and grateful for my mother. She’s the only reason why I’m not homeless. Everyday I think about suicide and I’m reaching a point where I might actually go through with it.
I’ve always been behind in life and feel like I progress slower than my peers. Deleted my social media cause I found myself comparing myself to my former classmates and friends achieving the things I tried so hard for and failed miserably.
I also suck at everything I do. After 1300 hours in valorant I only peaked at Gold 2. I’m the worst in my friend group like with every video game and sport. At one point I even paid for a few Valorant coaching lessons which IMO didn’t think were that great. I was always picked last in gym class. At my first job I was the last one to receive an offer to convert full time and the people that joined way after surpassed me despite having good metrics and being top of the leaderboard several times for several weeks.
Honestly at this point I’m ready to give up on life. Feels like I was destined to be a failure. I always felt like my efforts don’t pay off for anything. I failed my career. I failed in dating. I failed in my hobbies. Now I know you shouldn’t compare yourself to others but when I’m the only one I know of in my situation it’s damn near impossible not to. I’m not gonna act like I have the worst life ever but I don’t know of ANYONE my age struggling like this.
Every time I think I’m building momentum some bullshit always happens and every time it feels like I’m knocked back to square one. Feels like building a house that’s in a tornado zone only for my foundation to be knocked to pieces every time and cant afford to move.
I’m just frustrated with life and everything at this point. I hate everything about myself and seriously can’t wait to die. I’d pay someone to kill me. I’m crying while writing this thesis paper of a post. Maybe there’s something very wrong with me. I think I’m slow and stupid. Maybe even borderline retarded. I’m the failure of all failures. Nothing but a talentless garbage can loser bum.
Don’t know what to do. I don’t wanna go back to the hospital but I may have to. Thanks for reading my rant. I needed to get this out since I have no one to talk to.

2024.06.02 05:23 Ok_Letterhead4 A series of pain, consultations, and tests which led to the final diagnosis of Left Hip Dysplasia (LHP), with labrum tear and a recount of Left Periacetabular Osteotomy (LPAO) procedure.

Hi, not sure if this has been documented before but here I am, giving my 2 cents worth to everyone who needs this. I know it’s been really tough on everyone who has to go through this. It’s a really long post, so if you are short on time, just go straight to the heading in bold to find out what you’re looking for.
I don't know where everyone is from, but I am from Singapore and apparently, I can’t find any related posts by Singaporeans in any subreddits. If any fellow countryman needs this, there you go. For fellow netizens with Hip Dysplasia, there might be differences in the processes, but I suppose the recovery process is just about the same. Hope this helps, nonetheless!
Pre-diagnosis I have been a leisure runner in my late teens, and pretty much run about 5 to 10km regularly til mid-20s. It started with knee pain in a particular race, and the pain continued for a couple of years more. I had wanted to train for a half marathon, but I also wanted to ensure that I started my training right and pain-free. So I went to straight to a Sports Specialist Doctor in a Public Hospital and she diagnosed me with a Runner’s Knee (or formally known as Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, PFPS) after looking through my x-ray, and my description of pain. She referred me to the Podiatrist and the Physiotherapist for gait correction and muscle strengthening. It was going on fine for a while, but I still couldn’t run pain-free. Then Covid came, and the appointments have to be suspended. But I was still doing my physio exercises and running about 2.5 to 5km when we were allowed to.
Diagnosis As more restrictions eased, I began training for speed, and that was when the pain started coming from the hip, and walking became strangely painful with a pinching sensation at the hip/groin area at this point. I sought help from a private physiotherapist to find out what happened. After a few sessions, he realized something was not right and suggested me to get a hip x-ray done. And so I did, at a Polyclinic, and the x-ray showed shallow acetabulum and I got referred (again) to a Sports Specialist to get a MRI done. And LHP with a labrum tear was the diagnosis. And to no surprise… I got referred to another Specialist again, who was affirmative that I need a LPAO and at the same time broke it to me that I have a RHP which will need a PAO too. If you need to know the timeline - I had the x-ray done at the end of 2022, MRI done on mid-2023, LPAO done at the start of 2024.
Pre-surgery Preparation (Work) Check with your doctor on the estimated rest period (mine’s 3months) and inform your boss about it. The surgery will most likely be about 5 hours max, hospital stay 5 days, and you will be on 2 crutches for 6-8 weeks, and another 1-2 weeks on 1 crutch to stabilize your walking. You might be able to resume work obligations if it’s a sedentary job or another 6 more weeks of home rest if your work requires much walking or manual labour. So it’s really important to work out with your boss and colleagues for a proper handover so that you can concentrate solely on recovery.
Pre-surgery Preparation (Hospital) There will be a blood test / some swab done 3 – 4 weeks prior to the surgery; the nurse will let you know. You will be under General Anesthesia (GA) during the surgery, so fasting is required a day before is required.
Do pack light for your hospital stay. Use a backpack for convenience. Clothes to wear after discharge + source of entertainment and communication is enough. You wouldn’t want to carry a lot of things home after discharge when you’re on 2 crutches.
Pre-surgery Preparation (Insurance + Hospital Wards) Do inform your Insurance Agent / Company about it so that they are aware. It may or may not be covered, so please get in touch with them as soon as you have the details.
[Singapore’s context] There will be a pre-admission appointment with the hospital staff about 3 weeks before the scheduled surgery, which the staff with share with you the cost of the different class wards. Basically, Class C (8-bedded) and Class B2 (6-bedded) wards are fully subsidized by the government. I can’t remember how much a Class B1 (4-bedded) ward costs, but probably about 10-15K SGD. Class A (1-bedded) is about 21-23K SGD. The staff with help you out with the Letter of Guarantee (LOG) from your Insurance Company and will let you know in about 2 weeks if the application for LOG is successful, if not you would have to prepare for the bills depending on your chosen ward (either Class A or Class B1). There is no need for LOG for Class C and Class B2 wards, since it’s fully government-subsidized. Medisave and MediShield/IPs will be used for all Class Wards (Note: IPs is only applicable to 30 years old and above). My insurance allows me to be in the Class A ward and the application for LOG was also successful, thankfully.
Pre-surgery Preparation (Personal) Since you will be on crutches, do arrange your house to accommodate that. A folding bedside table, a caddy trolley, a long-arm grabber, pillows are items that you can prepare beforehand. Do also ensure that your toilet is slip-free as well or restructure it in a way that is beneficial for you. I had to bathe sitting on the toilet bowl for the 1st week as it is difficult to make it slip-free. It got better 2nd week onwards when I was allowed a 30% weight-bearing on my operated side, so I could be in the showering area. You will be at home and ‘confine’ to the bed/chair most of the time, so it’d be good to have some form of entertainment at home. Nanoblocks, Colouring books, Wordsearch, Sudoku, Crosswords, Netflix, Disney+, Hbo, Reading, Crocheting, Journalling, Zoom with friends are some of the things that you can do / prepare before surgery. You may or may not have energy for them, but that’s ok, the main idea is to focus on resting and having a sound mind so that you won’t be discouraged / feel bored / unmotivated. For meal wise, it’d be good if your family can cook / buy food, if not do ensure that your budget allows you to get food delivery for 6-8 weeks. I got my meals from Grabfood. Do ensure that you have a good chair – not those that put your knees above your hips.
Day of surgery If you can, do arrive 5-10mins earlier to settle in after registration.
[Singapore’s context] Do note that the staff who registers you in will ask you for the person to contact after the surgery. It’d be a text message to inform the person on the end of your surgery and which ward you will be in. You will need to sign the LOG letter (if any) and proceed to take your height and weight at the self-administered machine. Wait and follow any instructions by the nurse. You will be asked to change into the hospital gown and the nurses will ask you more questions, just answer them accordingly. They will also help to keep your belongings in their storage and will deliver to your ward at their timeslot after your surgery.
Process of surgery The Anesthesiology team will introduce themselves to you and go through the pain management methods. They asked what method (they mentioned 3, but I only remembered what I had) I preferred, and I told them to go ahead with what they think was good for me. Epidural, it was. And so, I got pricked with needles and whatnots and they finally brought me into the operating room. I didn’t realize the room was so big and cold and there were many doctors and nurses around. They did their thing, and I was just trying not to feel awkward with so many people looking at my bareback and being in a very vulnerable state. It’s a little pricky and painful at some point. Do let them know if you’re too cold, they have this hot air thing that can warm you up. They will also insert a urine catheter for you to help with the bladder movements. I was quickly under General Anesthesia (GA) with a breathing mouthpiece (the Anesthesiologists will direct you on what to do). I woke up after the surgery with a very dry throat and asked if I could have some water. They gave me a tiny vial of water, just about enough to soothe my throat. I guess it was also caused I was under GA and couldn’t be given much for my stomach too. I was quite aware of what was going on though I was still a little sleepy. I had to be brought to the High Dependency Ward (HDW) due to low blood pressure.
After surgery (in HDW) I kept wanting to drink water but that also caused me to vomit out water and had no appetite for dinner. Nausea and vomiting are just some side effects of GA. (I remembered being disappointed that I couldn’t have the watermelon, I had wanted to eat that, but I knew I couldn’t stomach it) And little did I realize that was the last time I saw a watermelon during meal times (damn the side effects). I was also quite weak on my operated left side, I was not in that much of a pain, just some discomfort. I was given a self-administered morphine device too, there is this button that I can press to administer morphine into my system at regular interval, the device has some safety feature which helps to stop people from abusing it) Used it once after I had to be flipped over to be wiped clean by the nurse (at this time, I had given up on trying to maintain my dignity, though the nurses were quite humane about it, if you know what I mean) But I was also trying not to use the morphine at all cos it gave me more side effects like drowsiness and an even lower blood pressure). Thankfully I had a good Pain Team (that’s what they call themselves), which helped to lower the dosage after they realized I was not using it that much and I was still very drowsy (I fell asleep halfway unknowingly after talking to people), and eventually I was off it. I was taken for an x-ray after the nurse ascertained that my blood pressure was normal (since I had the catheter, I just sipped water without a care in the world, to help raise my blood pressure). And I administered the morphine once after they flipped me over for the x-ray (it was bloody hell painful and it took a lot of strength). Probably in a day or 2, the doctors decided to remove my epidural needle and I was finally free of it. The next thing to get rid of was the catheter. I had a love-hate relationship with it. I need to be able to pass motion to get rid of it, which I did after an arduous process. Constipation is a side effect of not moving around. Your stool will most definitely be a Type 1 under the Bristol Stool Chart but it will be back to normal in a few days or so. I did a little cheer when I finally pooped.
My physiotherapist came and pushed me to move around. The first step coming down from the bed was the hardest due to gravitational pull. My muscles needed to be woken up after lying down for 48 hours or more. I got transferred to General Ward (GW) soon after.
After surgery (GW) I had some bed exercises to help to wake up the muscles and I was using the walker to move around. It was tough doing the bed exercises, but they have to be done. I was also able to bath independently by sitting down on the bathing chair in the bathing area of the toilet. I still needed assistance to wear my pyjamas pants. So unfortunately, the nurse still had to be around when I bathed for safety purposes since I was a fall-risk patient.
At this time, I was trying to get out of bed and be in the chair and also use the walker more to help with moving around and getting the muscles up and running. I had 2 more physio sessions with the crutches. Using the walker frequently helped with the use of crutches. (You will know what I meant when you have tried both out. You can push yourself but please do not force it if you are not strong enough yet.) My doctors have cleared me for discharge, I just need my physiotherapist to clear me too (they have to be sure that I can use the crutches properly and safely and also complete simple daily adaptive skills). Finally, I got cleared for discharge. I got the medication, and it was a cashless and fuss-free stay/process for me. I stayed in the hospital for 7 days (3.5 days in HDW, 3.5 days in GW). Remember to get your crutches before leaving the hospital.
Home rest 1st Week I must say, it’s really liberating to be at home, though it’s really a chore to move around. I did my physio exercises about 3x a day and just be a sloth. I was still very tired, but it was difficult to sleep. I’m usually a side sleeper, but I had to sleep on my back for 6 weeks, at least. My doctors said that I could sleep on my unoperated side, but it can be achy.
Home rest 2nd Week Things are looking up a little more since I could place a 30% weight on my left. I could enter the showering area now, just be careful not to overload the operated side. 2 crutches are still a must to prevent any overloading of weight to help with the recovery. Protein and calcium-rich food are your best friend. Again, do your physio exercises regularly. I still do mine 3x a day.
Home rest 7th Week Finally, I got to put full weight on my operated side. Happily, I tried to ditch BOTH my crutches, please do not be like me! Ease into walking slowly. Use 1 crutch to help you with the gravity pull as you put 100% weight on both legs. It is also possible to ditch the crutch and try walking on very short distances, do take care of your walking form. If you limp badly, please use 1 crutch and practice walking. I did try stairs and use the railings if necessary. I managed to ditch the crutches by Week 8. Physio continues, if you have access to the gym, please go ahead, slowly. I am sleeping both on my back and on my unoperated side now.
Home rest 13th Week Not sure if things are still looking good, but my knees kinda hurt, and that’d be another story for another day. I am cleared to resume work, though I still got to be careful with the walking and all.
Week 14 – Week 18 (current) I think since I am walking a lot more, I am limping a little, but not enough for a need to bring back the crutch. It got more achy when I’m sleeping on my unoperated side and still a little discomfort if I try to sleep on my operated side. My operated side is still weak and achy when I walk or sit or lie down. I am still doing my physio, though not 3x a day now.
I am not too sure how I will progress but that’s my journey thus far. Happy to share here and to answer any questions you may have.

Notes:
•though much attention and research has been devoted to the Titans and their sometimes climactic appearances and struggles with one another, the creatures that followed them into the limelight, nicknamed Mega Fauna, were just as important due to their crucial impact on the global ecosystem. Many have feared that the introduction of so many new species could irreversibly damage the stability of the environment and send it into a downward spiral if left alone, and have so called for a systematic extermination of the Mega Fauna on the surface. Just as many have decried such notions as fear mongering, however, and instead suggest introducing measures to naturally curb and control the population growth of the newly discovered creatures; the bats that would become Bagorah and Korghan were to be one such attempted measure of control. Created by the biologist Zaphen Crumwell, these new bats were to act as a sort of microbat for regions dominated by the Mega Fauna and the plants and fruits that have followed in their wake. In particular, they were to feed on the invertebrates and fruit that were growing in abundance in tropical regions of the world; as such, they were spliced with hammerhead bat, common and white-winged vampire bat, little brown bat, and large flying fox to give them both a sufficient size and a wide range of diet that was to ensure that they wouldn’t starve during early lean years. A mating pair was thus created to study their affects in a controlled environment and see how well they adapt to their environment and how they would cope with the pressures they might face. Unfortunately, the secure research facility that they were contained in was attacked and destroyed by an unknown party, releasing the one entity most feared by the staff: the Yog. When the Yog searched for a suitable host, it found the pair instead. With no other option, the Yog infected the two despite their screeches playing havoc on him. As they mutated and grew in stature, Yog mutated and grew a certain immunity to sonic waves up to a point. After they finished growing, the two new Titans were ravenous, so Yog commanded them to devour nine entire costal villages before raiding a nuclear plant in the dead of night so that they had enough energy for the long voyage. After roosting in an isolated cavern nearby, Bagorah and Korghan then proceeded to make a journey across the North Atlantic Ocean, attacking and sinking ships of all sizes along the way. As the US Navy scrambled to search for the cause of so many sinking vessels, Bagorah and Korghan land in Miami, Florida and go on a devastating rampage that levels multiple areas of the city and kill many people. Under the directions of Yog, Bagorah and Korghan move towards the largest concentration of animal life that was closest to their position: Greater Miami Zoo. Once there, they proceed to infect as many animals as they could, creating an army of Super Fauna under the control of the Space Amoeba. Once this was completed, they then went on the march, following the coast and moving towards South America and the amazon rainforest, on of the largest and richest ecosystems in the world. Fortunately for mankind, this doomsday army was halted at the city of Galveston by a coalition of Titans led by Showa Godzilla and Gorgo. While the other amoeba-controlled mutants were bogged down by the other Titans, Bagorah and Korghan fought the Gojiras and Gorgo directly. The fight was long and brutal, both sides dealing harsh blows that knocked any unwary mutant that strayed too close unconscious. When Gorgo was isolated and pinned down, Bagorah and Korghan feasted on his blood, unable to resist their primal instincts anymore. The intake of DNA caused Yog to experience a sudden, uncontrollable series of mutations that left both mutant Titans paralyzed. All the sudden, every piece of the Space Amoeba left the bodies of every single mutant Titan present and converged upon the two pieces that were formerly within Bagorah and Korghan, taking the form that Yog keeps to this day. Resuming his own battle, Yog viciously fought with the trio while the two bat Titans watched on from their perches on a couple of skyscrapers. Though now free from Yog’s direct influence, they still felt a kinship with him and were conflicted over whether or not they should flee the scene to lick their wounds. By the time Yog had been defeated and sent scurrying into the hollow earth, however, Bagorah and Korghan had long since fled back across the ocean and further east, never truly stopping until they reached their current location. Bagorah and his mate rarely leave their location, only doing so when summoned by either Battra or Yog or when they seek larger prey beyond their island.
•of the two, Bagorah is by far more aggressive and hotheaded than Korghan, preferring to get into the thick of it and crack some skulls open and use brute force to solve any issues. Korghan, on the other hand, is more level headed and prefers to either outthink her opponent or use diplomacy to avoid conflict outright; caution should still be taken, however, for she’s just as dangerous as her mate, with faster attacks and movements due to her smaller size and lighter build. Amongst their allies in Battra’s alliance, some would be shocked to learn that they are the most consistent and reliable heavy hitters of them all when it has the likes of Kumonga, Tlanusi and Sasori. In practice, however, things are much different: Kumonga is usually too indifferent to the plight of nature, Tlanusi is usually deep asleep and unable to be roused by anyone, and Sasori is too much of a wild card to be relied upon for any period of time. Once Bagorah and Korghan are committed to a task or goal, however, they will stick to it to the bitter end, no matter how long it takes. This, combined with their desire to actually support and sustain the world’s ecosystem, makes them consistent and reliable allies for Battra to call upon any time he needs to. The only thing that somewhat sours their relationship with each other is Bagorah and Korghan’s ravenous appetite that repeatedly see them get into conflict with Titans on the other islands when chasing down larger prey. This, combined with their habit to periodically deplete their island of large prey, has caused them to be a lesser thorn in the sides of Battra and Monarch, who seek to maintain a stable population of Mega Fauna on the Skull Island chain.
•of the two, Bagorah is the most likely of the two to leave the island and wonder around the world to explore, his sense of curiosity driving him to seek new things to discover and map out. Such curiosity has often led him to get into all sorts of trouble, which usually involves him brawling with other Titans when he unintentionally enters their territory. He’s seen the most fights with Venria, Zeus and Tiamat, since Bagorah has an undying hatred for those who have such an insufferable and arrogant personality and abrasive attitude. It has gotten to the point that Bagorah seems to go out of his way to goad them into a fight, using his ear-piercing, sonic screeches to taunt and harass them until they either attack or retreat into a spot out of his range. Korghan, on the other hand, seems to mostly stick to the island entirely, patrolling its shores and keeping any wondering Titans away with her piercing shrieks when they get too close. The only times she ever leaves the island for extended periods of time are when Battra calls upon her for help or Bagorah manages to successfully coax her into joining him on one of his exploration journeys into the hollow earth and usually ends with both of them brawling with an enraged Titan that Bagorah had unwisely taunted and goaded until they snapped. Despite her very apparent anger towards her mate whenever this happens, Korghan seems to be willing to forgive Bagorah every single time. Despite their clashing personalities, differences and demeanors, however, the two are very loyal towards one another and have rebuffed multiple attempts by other bat Titans to court them. In fact, it’s Korghan who seems to act more aggressively towards other female bat Titans that try to court Bagorah than he does towards male Titans. This interesting quirk is still under study, but it has been theorized by the more conspiracist researchers that Bagorah secretly enjoys the attention he gets and is ashamed of it, which drives Korghan into a frenzy to protect her mate and save him from such uncomfortable situations.
•despite two of the bats that went into their genetic makeup being fruit eaters, the vampire bat and little brown bat within their makeup was amplified and further enhanced by Yog have caused them to become obligate carnivores, ingesting fruit, seeds and other plant matter in order to supplement their diet. Their main source of prey are Megapedes, Water-Vipers, Lesser Goliath Krakens and Skull Crawlers, with sauropods and other creatures of similar mass sometimes being preyed upon if there are no other sources of nutrients available. Megapedes, in particular, are amongst their favorites because they can use the creature’s naturally occurring toxins as a deterrent for skin parasites by rubbing it in their fur, wings, tail and face. Their most preferred prey, however, is the Lesser Goliath Kraken due its sheer bulk and the ease of preserving it in one of the salt-filled caves that they like to frequent. In fact, when researchers explored one of these caverns whilst Bagorah and Korghan were away on one of their explorations of the hollow earth, they discovered dozens of well preserved Lesser Goliath Krakens that showed signs of being casually nibbled upon and consumed; when taking samples to see how long they were preserved, they were startled to discover that the oldest carcass dated back to late 1999, just over ten years ago. This has led to Monarch researching into the preservation properties of the salt caverns of Skull Island Minor to see what could preserve dead matter so perfectly that they look like they were just killed a few days ago. Recently, however, such potentially groundbreaking research has been halted due to drastic changes in the two Titans.
•behavior of the two bat Titans has completely changed, leaving Monarch both confused and suspicious. It has been noted that Korghan has been sticking to the valley that she and Bagorah roost in the mountain range exclusively, picking up trees and other such shrubbery with a delicateness unseen before and taking them back to their main cavern. The only documentation that they could get before they were chased off by Bagorah was that it appears that she’s building a nest of some sort, using the tree trunks to build a crude wall and using the leaves and branches to create a soft (for them) bedding. The last sighting Monarch has received from the outpost station has noted that Korghan has put on not insignificant amount of weight, and seems to have grown to prefer skulking along the ground in a loping gate instead of flying, which may tie in to her weight gain. Bagorah seems to have done a 180 on some of his behavior, becoming much more reclusive and reluctant to leave the island unless it’s to chase sufficiently large prey; he now spends his days aggressively patrolling the shores of the island, the entrances to the mountainous region and the island’s single entrance to the hollow earth when he’s not excessively hunting prey of any sufficiently large size down and taking it to their roost, only to do it again immediately after. It has gone on for long enough that he’s been spotted boldly raiding territories that he once avoided in order to hunt their plentiful stocks of Mega Fauna and take them back to their caverns. More alarming about the change in Bagorah’s behavior in that he has become increasingly aggressive and suspicious towards any Titans or human craft of any kind that shows even a hint towards going to the island. A few much lesser Titans have even been found to have been ruthlessly attacked and killed by Bagorah, their bodies missing chunks of themselves that were taken by Bagorah himself as food. Things escalated slightly when a few freighters were found in ruins near the island’s coast, everything of even the remotest value was destroyed, though the crews were lucky to escape with only moderate injuries. Though the companies that owned those freighters had lobbied heavily for military action against Bagorah for the economic loss sustained by his attacks, Monarch was able to get it vetoed by pointing out the recent collapse of his paths of patrolling to only the mountainous region of the island. This has also allowed Monarch to regain communications with their outposts, who have reported that Bagorah himself now rarely leaves the surrounding valleys that connect to their roost and has blocked off the other entrances to the main cavern besides one that is easily defendable. Though some more aggressive personnel have suggested that they crack open the cavern and see what is going on, Ishirō Serizawa, now head of Monarch after the arrest of the previously head after their arrest due to their part in the attempted recreation of the Oxygen Destroyer, vetoed it on the grounds of just how a bad idea it was to do so and ordered that they be monitored for any changes to their behavior and movements. Time will only tell if his hunch is correct or not…

2024.06.02 02:12 InconclusiveOak Progress Update.

Hello ladies. I hope you're doing well.
I've posted a few times about the ongoing issue with my husband who is a PA. I don't make a lot of posts but I do comment around here.
I've been in therapy, with a non-csat and it's ok. I feel grounded with that but not making any improvements or breakthrough. I think I'm gonna quit and try to find a CSAT.
Update about the PA. He was laid off at work for 2 weeks and stopped going to the CSAT. He's been back in work about 6 weeks, and hasn't scheduled anything with her now that he's got an income again. He told me when he was laid off that he would resume sessions with his CSAT once he was back in work. He's also gotten a raise at work.
I guess to his minimal credit, he found an in person meeting and goes to 1 meeting a week that is 2 hours long since he stopped with his CSAT.
We went to discernment counseling with a therapist who works at his CSATs practice. Discernment counseling is a counselor guided process where over 4-6 sessions they help you decide to get a divorce, commit to couples therapy,or maintain the status quo. It's more nuanced that that but that's the gist of it.
We went and discussed it. It was a male counselor and he didn't say anything to invalidate that porn can be addictive. However, during the session, several times he brought up couples counseling, and I clarified everytl time that we were here for discernment counseling. At the end, we basically left off at he and I need to go home and discuss it and schedule something whether it be moving forward with discernment counseling or couples therapy.
I didn't really like that and I am annoyed because I specifically discussed what I wanted with the intake lady, we discussed in depth the process and steps to discernment counseling and then we get there with the male therapist and he kept guiding the discussion to couples counseling.
I don't know. If he thinks that DC isn't good for us and we should do couples counseling, I think he should just outright say that if that is the case. It was very confusing amd left me feeling weird.
So anyway, we never talked about what we should do because I've dropped the rope on leading talks with him. I told him months ago when he started with his CSAT what I needed and one of those things were weekly check-ins scheduled, initiated, and led by him. I am a leader at work and under a lot of stress and pressure, I do not want to be the leader of this, nor do I feel I should be; I feel he needs to be scheduling with me and he should be creating an agenda or talking points. We've not had a single check in and it's been approx.8-9 months now. And I've provided him with information on how to have a check in and the types of things to discuss.
I keep seeing people say what it looks like when someone is in recovery and that they have shame resilience and empathy. I've not seen either. In the very beginning with the CSAT he was more open about acknowledging the pain he has caused and apologizing. It was minimal, but I saw it for a few weeks and it felt like a glimmer of hope.
He cannot talk to me in person. He can't. I don't know why, it's always been this way. We could have a disagreement and agree to table it until later and then when later comes and we're in bed, we both sit there in silence and awkwardness until he outlasts me and I fall asleep. Conversation successfully avoided on his part.
Again, I don't feel like these are conversations I should have to initiate. When I need to, I do. But all things related to this porn addiction need to be led by him,and he's not leading or even taking this seriously.
What I'm feeling like, now that we're nearly a year into a "serious" crack down on my part with the insistence of a CSAT and recovery, to which he agreed that he is addicted and does need help because even if I leave him, he will likely have another relationship in the future and he doesn't want to lose this one or have a PA impact this future any longer.
Big talk, he's wanting recovery yeah! rah rah...6 months later in a small spat he says, well I only went to the CSAT so you wouldn't leave.
And the truth comes out. You said you wanted this for you, for our family, for our relationship, and not you're forgetting your lie.
So over the past 3 to 5 months. I've dropped the rope. I don't even remember what happened but I put him out of the bedroom on the couch. He slept there for about 2 months. We were working to clean up my office and the spare room that is storage so we could separate in the home andove my office down stairs and he take my old office. After 2 months I noticed the physical impact this was having on his body. Back pains, neck pains, all sorts of pain and hobbling, and I do not think he was crying wolf. He works construction and it's hard physically demanding work. So I let him come back to the bed.
Not much progress has been made on the room cleaning and moving situation.
Now for the most recent fuckery from my brain that's got me all messed up....
We scheduled a trip to Vegas in Feb for a show at Sphere with a band I love and introduced to him. In late March I told him I didn't want him to go and I will find someone to buy his half of the trip out. (It's not just tickets, there's a hotel room, and a VIP experience). I found someone, the committed, had some personal house issues (new ac) and are unable to go. I let him know and because things havent been awful between us, I told him he is welcome to come or I'll try to find someone else. He wanted to go, I admittedly was nervous being in Vegas alone so I was comforted by him coming, despite what goes on there. We've been geeking out about it and finding activities to do while there.
I want to go to the pool, a bathing suit has been on my mind for weeks. I got one recently and it was too small and fit really badly and really made me feel bad about myself. Last night I was looking at full body rash guards, like imagine a wet suit for a diver...a full body bathing suit because I don't want to show my body at the pool. I mentioned going to look for a bathing suit today. I woke up and just didn't want to go because I am fat and disgusting. There's no bathing suit that's going to fix whatever this is.
I used to be so confident and at least acceptedy body. I'm not super fat but am not skinny. I'm thick. I have red hair half way down my ass that I sit on when I sit down. I have tattoos and tasteful piercings. There was a time that I was like "fuck yeah I look good" now I just feel like 50 pounds of shit stuffed into a 5 pound bag.
So as we were sitting here in bed I closed my eyes and started tearing up and just trying to breathe through it and not cry. I don't know if he noticed this but after about 3 minutes of sitting with my eyes closed and little tears running down my face, he gets up and is like I'm gonna take the kid to pickup his bike from the shop and leaves. I'm a blanket burrito at this point and just crying while they're gone.
Forgot his card, texts me that he's coming home. Comes home and gets it and asks if he can get me anything while hes out. Through tears I ask if he can get me any self esteem and he replies "it's just like that million dollars, I can't buy that" and leaves.
So, lately, I have been thinking about getting my brows shaded/microbladed because I have fair skin, red hair, which means my eyebrows and body hair are cleawhite blonde. I've always looked like I have no eyebrows even though I do.
So I called a place and went and got some semi-permanent brows put on my face this afternoon.
Maybe this will make me feel better if my face looks "normal" by having eyebrows.
I am continuing to leave the rope on the floor, I won't be picking it up. He needs to pick it up and hand it to me. Our lease is prohibitively expensive to break, so I'm going to ride it out and work on me.
I've paid all of the bills and carried us for years, including our 2500 a month rent with my job. He's now making more than me, once again. He, as a single person, should have no issue paying for his own bills, life, etc. meanwhile he's nickle and diming himself (and our family by extension) with gas station energy drinks and food, and mobile games in the Google Play Store.
If you've made it this far thanks for reading. I appreciate it and any advice, commiseration, and love you may have to send. Sorry you're here.

2024.06.02 01:44 4990 Metabolic Health (Part 2)

Metabolic Health Part 2: Estimating Body Composition with Bioimpedance and DEXA
As previously described, BMI is an easy, but imperfect metric to evaluate body composition: it will systematically underestimate metabolic risk in some populations (ie. South Asians) and overestimate risk in others (ie. Blacks, very muscular individuals). Waist circumference and waist/hip ratio add some specificity, and in routine clinical practice I will measure BMI, waist circumference, waist/hip ratio in all patients. However I still want to know body fat percentage, which is highly associated with health and disease.
Bioimpedance devices, sometimes called body composition analyzers, are scales that passes very low current(s) through your feet (and sometimes hands depending on the device) and returns it to the sensor. Water is overwhelmingly the best conductor of electricity and conveniently fat has zero water (you can't mix water with oil). So by estimating total body water and knowing height, the device will tell you your fat free mass and, by extension, your fat mass and body fat percentage. The more sophisticated professional grade devices can also estimate your visceral fat (much more associated with metabolic disease), basal metabolic rate (ie resting energy utilization), and host of other factors. See sample read out here. They have been extensively validated against DEXA (the gold standard, see below). See here and here for examples. The cheaper, consumer devices vary tremendously in quality and accuracy. Directionally, however, they tend to underestimate body fat percentage by a few percent. This is particularly true for very lean or very obese individuals. They are also dependent on hydration status, which can lead to tremendous reading to reading variability. Nevertheless, if a patient is committed to taking a measurement more or less at the same time every day (ie first thing in the AM for example after urinating) and taking measurements in a standardized way (ie after bowel movement, nude or mostly nude, before eating), they can give useful estimation of progress. For example, if a person starts at 25% body fat percentage and after 6 months they are at 20% with diet and exercise, I am less concerned about the exact numbers and more about the directionality. We also calibrate with DEXA to know how much we need to correct the measurements for.
DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) is an ultra low dose x-ray that is the gold standard for estimating body composition. It is a cheap, fast, very safe test that can be repeated annually or several times a year to track progress. See sample report here. I am interested in body fat percentage, and visceral fat specifically (should be less than 1lb). Android fat is carried in the abdomen (imagine an apple shaped body) and pear fat is carried in the hips and buttocks (imagine a pear body). Android fat is much more metabolically dangerous and should be less than 3 lbs. Next, I consider appendicular lean mass, which is the sum of the lean (fat free) tissues in the arms and legs. This is critically important in older adults where frailty is a real concern. Finally, I will peep at the bone mineral density and z and t scores (which is how dense the bones are compared to age matched controls and a population of healthy young people). If I see any abnormalities, osteopenia or osteoporosis, I will refer for formal clinical DEXA in a medical setting to confirm and work up further. I will also peep the basal metabolic rate and can apply a multiplier to determine how many calories a patient should ideally be consuming to gain, lose, or maintain weight.
Ultimately, metrics previous described such as blood lipids, measures of insulin resistance, and body composition as described above, will give me a very clear picture if someone is metabolically healthy or not. In part 3, we will turn to an overview of nutrition for metabolic health.

2024.06.02 01:01 urbanracer34 Side by side clips, one vertical one horizontal, Horizontal clip cut off. How to fix?

First off I am a newbie to resolve, so I apologize if this has been covered before.
I tried to do this with iMovie but that didn't seem workable and needed something with a bit more capability.
I am editing a project where I have one video that is horizontal and one that is vertical.
I want to make the Horizontal video to be the main part, with the vertical video on the right hand side.
They are both different resolutions (obviously)
How can I make this work? Nothing on YouTube matches what I am after. They obscure part of each video instead of featuring them side by side in full res.

2024.06.01 22:40 pinchpolo Dinosorium

Once upon a time, in a remote laboratory nestled deep within a dense jungle, a team of eccentric scientists embarked on a groundbreaking experiment. Their mission? To unlock the secrets of a mysterious compound they had dubbed "Dinosorium."
Dr. Amelia Fossil, the brilliant but unconventional leader of the team, had stumbled upon an ancient manuscript that hinted at the existence of a legendary element capable of extraordinary feats. With unwavering determination, she rallied her team to uncover the truth behind this enigmatic substance.
Dinosorium, as described in the manuscript, was said to possess a vibrant green hue, reminiscent of the lush foliage that surrounded their jungle laboratory. Its metallic sheen hinted at untold potential, while its ability to emit gamma rays at precise intervals puzzled and intrigued the scientists.
As the experiments progressed, they discovered that Dinosorium's gamma rays held a peculiar power. When directed at various objects, they caused remarkable transformations. Leaves turned into precious gems, water shimmered with an otherworldly glow, and even the laboratory's resident parrot gained the ability to recite Shakespearean sonnets.
But it was during a routine observation of the jungle fauna that they made their most astonishing discovery. A curious chicken wandered into the path of Dinosorium's gamma rays, and in a flash of emerald light, it underwent a transformation unlike any other. Instead of harm, the chicken emerged unscathed, but with a tantalizing aroma wafting from its feathers.
In a state of disbelief, the scientists realized that Dinosorium had the inexplicable ability to transmute ordinary chickens into mouthwatering pieces of Kentucky Fried Chicken. It was a culinary breakthrough of epic proportions, but with great power came great responsibility.
Word of their discovery spread like wildfire, attracting attention from far and wide. Entrepreneurs clamored to harness Dinosorium's potential for profit, while ethicists debated the morality of transforming living creatures into fast food.
As the fame of Dinosorium's discovery spread, so did the intrigue and controversy surrounding its potential applications. The jungle laboratory, once a haven for scientific curiosity, now buzzed with activity as curious onlookers and eager investors descended upon the site.
Among the throngs of visitors was Colonel Albert Sanders, the famed restaurateur known for his delectable fried chicken recipes. He arrived at the laboratory with an offer that promised both wealth and renown: exclusive rights to Dinosorium's transformative power in exchange for a handsome sum.
Dr. Amelia Fossil, torn between the allure of financial stability and her scientific principles, grappled with the decision. On one hand, the funding from Colonel Sanders could propel their research to new heights, enabling them to unlock even more secrets of Dinosorium. On the other hand, she feared the consequences of relinquishing control over such a potent discovery.
As tensions mounted, a shadowy figure lurked in the shadows, watching the proceedings with keen interest. Professor Mortimer Von Dark, a rival scientist rumored to have dubious intentions, had his own designs for Dinosorium. With a sinister grin, he plotted to steal the compound for his own nefarious purposes, heedless of the potential consequences.
In the midst of this turmoil, a humble chicken named Cluckers found itself unwittingly thrust into the spotlight. Drawn by the tantalizing aroma of Dinosorium-infused fried chicken, Cluckers embarked on a daring quest to uncover the truth behind the legendary compound and its effects on its fellow fowl.
Guided by a sense of adventure and a desire to protect its feathered brethren, Cluckers embarked on a journey fraught with danger and discovery. Along the way, it encountered a colorful cast of characters, from wise old owls to mischievous monkeys, each with their own stake in the unfolding drama.
As tensions reached a boiling point, Dr. Amelia Fossil and her team faced a fateful decision: to safeguard the secrets of Dinosorium and preserve its integrity, or to succumb to the temptations of fame and fortune at the risk of unleashing its power upon the world.
As the tension mounted, events took a dramatic turn in the jungle laboratory. Colonel Sanders, eager to secure exclusive rights to Dinosorium's transformative power, presented Dr. Amelia Fossil with a lucrative contract, promising untold riches in exchange for access to the compound.
With the weight of the decision bearing down upon her, Dr. Fossil hesitated, torn between the allure of financial stability and her commitment to scientific integrity. Sensing her uncertainty, Professor Mortimer Von Dark seized the opportunity to advance his own agenda.
Under the cover of darkness, Von Dark and his henchmen launched a daring raid on the laboratory, intent on seizing control of Dinosorium by any means necessary. In the chaos that ensued, equipment was destroyed, specimens were scattered, and the fate of the legendary compound hung in the balance.
Amidst the chaos, Cluckers the chicken emerged as an unlikely hero, rallying its feathered comrades to defend the laboratory and protect Dinosorium from falling into the wrong hands. With courage and determination, they fended off Von Dark's forces, thwarting his nefarious plans and safeguarding the secrets of the compound.
In the aftermath of the battle, Dr. Fossil and her team emerged victorious, their resolve strengthened by the ordeal. Recognizing the dangers posed by unchecked greed and ambition, they resolved to keep Dinosorium's existence a closely guarded secret, lest it fall into the wrong hands once again.
With the laboratory restored to its former glory, Dr. Fossil and her team resumed their research, undeterred by the trials they had faced. As they delved deeper into the mysteries of Dinosorium, they made new discoveries that promised to revolutionize science and shape the future of humanity.
And so, the legend of Dinosorium lived on, a testament to the power of curiosity, courage, and camaraderie in the face of adversity. In the quiet depths of the jungle, amidst the rustling leaves and murmuring streams, its secrets remained hidden, waiting to be unlocked by those brave enough to seek them.

Got this sweet boy almost exactly a year ago off of Craigslist, lady said he was 100% golden (highly doubtful) and I don’t really care I’m just more curious than anything. Any guesses if he’s mixed or not? He’s on the smaller side for a golden and his head is narrow (at least I think). Pictures are him from puppy - now.

2024.06.01 22:17 Saddleback_Studio 2d horror game concept, id appreciate any feedback. I don't plan on taking this game anywhere, this will be my first game without copying a YouTube tutorial.

Name: Hall Monitor.

Genre: Horror

This game revolves around escaping from school while avoiding the hall monitor.
Your objective is to navigate from your classroom to the exit without getting caught.
The hall monitor is a character named Olivia. She seems sweet at first, but turns vicious and frightening when provoked.
Olivia's AI patrols the hallway. If you enter her detection radius, she will chase you. Once you're out of this radius, she loses sight of you. However, she will continue to search for a few seconds before resuming her patrol.
When Olivia spots you, the hallway lights switch off and she starts to glow red. At this point, you'll need to use the light from your phone to see.
The core game loop of this concept involves:
  1. Starting in the classroom and planning an escape route.
  2. Navigating through the hallways while avoiding Olivia, the hall monitor.
  3. Using objects and the environment to distract Olivia or block her path.
  4. If spotted, using the light from the phone to navigate and find hiding spots.
  5. Reaching the exit and advancing to the next level.
  6. As the game progresses, the school layout becomes more complex, and Olivia's patrol patterns and speed increase.
To produce a basic prototype of this game using simplified graphics to ensure its feasibility and fun factor, follow these steps:
  1. Create a Basic Layout and Characters: Start by designing a simple school layout and basic characters using Godot's 2D scene editor. At this stage, use placeholder sprites for your characters and levels.
  2. Develop Character Movement: Utilize Godot's scripting language, GDScript, to implement character movement. At this stage, basic up, down, left, and right movements should suffice.
  3. Establish the Hall Monitor's AI: Craft a basic AI for the hall monitor, Olivia, that patrols the hallways. This can be done using a simple state machine with states for patrolling and chasing.
  4. Set Up Detection Radius: Implement a straightforward detection radius for Olivia by creating an Area2D node as a child of the Olivia sprite. Trigger the chase state when the player enters this area.
  5. Test Lighting Effects: When Olivia spots the player, simulate the hallway lights switching off and Olivia glowing red. For this prototype, you can use basic color changes to represent these effects.
  6. Integrate Interaction with Environment: Incorporate some simple interactive objects in the environment that the player can use to distract Olivia or block her path. These can be basic Area2D nodes, and interactions can be represented by simple animations or color changes.
  7. Simulate Game Progression: As the player progresses, simulate the increase in complexity of the school layout and Olivia's patrol patterns and speed. You can create different scenes for each level and load them as the player progresses

2024.06.01 22:07 TooMuchTape20 How do I improve viewport shading so depth is easier to see?

This is a sample of what I'm talking about. The text is hard to read because there isn't enough contrast between different parts of the geometry.
I find myself frequently wanting to take quick screenshots to show progress, ask for feedback, etc, but wasting time on trying to get this sort of confusing color blowout from happening.

2024.06.01 21:42 NobleOceanAlleyCat My negative review of The Three-Body Problem (English translation)

As other reviewers have mentioned, the characters are one-dimensional. They do not feel like real people because most of them are reduced to their resumes or to their job descriptions. We get it: everyone is super smart and accomplished. That doesn’t make them interesting. It seems like most characters just exist to tell Wang Miao to go see someone else, so the plot can move along. The police detective, Shi Quiang, is the only character who actually has some personality.
Now, before I can address the biggest problem in the book, some background is needed.
WARNING: SPOILERS FOLLOW
The Trisolarians are the aliens from the three body solar system. The Earth-Trisolaris Movement—which, for some reason, is abbreviated as ETO, rather than ETM—refers to a loosely connected group of humans who want the Trisolarians to come to Earth. The ETO is split into two major factions, the Adventists and the Redemptionsts. The Adventists want the Trisolarians to wipe out the human race. They feel that humans are irredeemable and deserve to be punished for the ways they have treated other humans, other species, and the planet. The Redemptionists believe that, while humans have done awful things, they are redeemable and the Trisolarians can help reform the human race (or at least force them to do the right thing) with their superior intelligence and technology. The Redemptionists also have a semi-religious attitude toward the Trisolarians. They worship them for their superior intelligence, in the same way that religious people worship a god.
I think the most unrealistic part of the book, and its biggest problem, is that most of the members of the ETO “came from the highly educated classes, and many were elites of the political and financial spheres.” (Ch29 p317) Why is this so unrealistic? Well, first, the political and financial elite tend to be more amoral and self-serving than the average person, so it’s unlikely that they would want to punish humanity for its moral transgressions. Second, the political and financial elite have the most to lose from an alien invasion. It’s more plausible to assume that they, more than anyone, would want to protect their wealth, power, and influence. Third, the political and financial elite are, in all likelihood, disproportionately responsible for the very injustices for which they believe humanity deserves to be punished. Fourth, the political and financial elite have the most political power to correct those injustices themselves, without the help of an alien civilization. In the real world, the problem is typically that the powerful benefit too much from the status quo and so have no desire to fight against injustice when doing so would harm their bottom line. The book acts like the most elite individuals in society are held back by the common people and need the help of an even more powerful alien civilization to correct or punish humanity for its moral transgressions. All this makes me wonder: what world does Cixin Liu live in? Maybe something got lost in translation. Maybe there is a cultural difference that makes the book’s depiction of the elite more plausible. I have no idea.
Still, look at how the common people are depicted in the novel. “The ETO had once tried to develop membership among the common people, but these efforts all failed. The ETO concluded that the common people did not seem to have the comprehensive and deep understanding of the highly educated about the dark side of humanity.” (Ch29 p317) Intelligence is not a prerequisite for being acquainted with the dark side of humanity. People as intelligent as the members of the ETO should know this. If you are going to tell us that a certain group of people in your book is really smart, don’t make them believe stupid things, unless there’s a good explanation for such an aberration in their thinking. The Three Body game was used as a recruitment tool, but it primarily attracted intellectuals because it “required too much background knowledge and in-depth thinking, and most young players didn’t have the patience or skill to discover the shocking truth beneath its apparently common surface.” (Ch29 p320) We get it: physicists are better than everyone else. Only they could advance far enough in the game.
Furthermore, we are to believe that these powerful people were influenced by books like Silent Spring and Animal Liberation. Of those two books, I have only read Animal Liberation, which is largely a call to end the needless suffering of sentient creatures. The values expressed in that book are totally inconsistent with inviting an alien civilization to Earth with the expressed purpose of harming sentient creatures. My guess is that the same holds true for the values expressed in Silent Spring. But I admit that humans have done, and continue to do, awful things, which makes it easy to relate to the idea that many humans deserve, in some way, to be punished or brought to justice. And while expressing agreement with that vague idea is a far cry from endorsing the extinction of the human race, it would not be surprising if someone somewhere took the idea to such extremes. What’s implausible, however, is that those who are on top, those who benefit most from the status quo, would develop this attitude toward humanity.
Now, let’s talk a little bit more about the Redemptionists. Ye Wenjie, the “spiritual leader” of the ETO, speaks for them when she admits that, no, they don’t understand Trisolarian civilization. (Ch31 p45) Yet this group of super smart people believes that the Trisolarians will just happen to share their values and help them reform humanity. The only reason she gives for thinking this is that she believes “A society with such advanced science must also have more advanced moral standards.” (Ch31 p345) When asked whether this conclusion is “scientific,” she doesn’t have anything to say. Not only is this claim not scientific, it is philosophically stupid. In fact, the characters in this book are so philosophically shallow that none of them bothered to ask whether the Trisolarians might be just as bad to each other as humans are. In that case, they might come to Earth, kill all the humans, and create a society that is just as bad as the one that members of the ETO wish to destroy/reform. I don’t know of any moral theory with the implication that unjust acts are not as bad when they are committed by more intelligent beings. Is it plausible that physicists would be so philosophically stupid? Maybe.
Well, at least if the Trisolarians came to Earth, they would no longer live under constant threat of extinction-level natural disaster. How is that any better? To its credit, the book hints at an answer to that question. Recall that the Redemptionists have a semi-religious attitude toward the Trisolarians, but “Unlike other human religions, it was the Lord who was in crisis, and the duty of salvation fell on the shoulders of the believer.” (Ch29 p319) “Their ultimate ideal was to save the Lord. In order to allow the Lord to continue to exist, they were willing to sacrifice the human world to some degree.” (Ch29 p320) Presumably, then, because the Trisolarians are so much smarter and more advanced than humans, it would be better for them to live peacefully on Earth, rather than under constant threat of extinction-level natural disaster on their home planet. In other words, they are superior, so they deserve better. Just as it is more important to save humans than it is to save bugs, it is more important to save Trisolarians than it is to save humans. It would have to be interesting to see the author explore this idea more, or at least have his characters discuss it! This attitude, on the part of the characters, could have been made plausible if there was a greater exploration of the beliefs of individual characters, rather than just the generalbeliefs of an organization that consists of “elites of the political and financial speres.”
In conclusion, not only are the characters dull, but their psychologies and motivations are implausible, and their philosophy is (unintentionally) shallow.
Two smaller quibbles:
(1) The book expects us to believe that an alien civilization that lives on a much more hostile planet than earth, a planet so hostile that its people are regularly wiped out, or sent into hibernation, by natural events, were able to make such scientific progress that they were able to unwrap a proton in 10+ dimensions and build spaceships that allowed some of them survive away from the harsh conditions of their home planet, so they could try to communicate with other beings. Surely such conditions are not conducive to technological advancement. It’s more plausible to expect the inhabitants of Earth to advance at much faster rate than the Trisolarians. (2) The book expects us to believe that, not only were they able to unwrap a proton in 10+ dimensions, but they were able to pack it with tech and send it to earth to use as spyware in ways that seem like pure magic. This was the part of the book that stopped feeling like sci-fi and started feeling more like fantasy.
