2024.05.19 18:08 Background-Chicken-7 Let’s talk about the founder of FFIE - YT Jia

Foreword: First of all thanks for having a positive community here. I am from the far east so apologies for my poor use of English in advance. I hold about 14.8k shares myself and believe this is gonna be a long war. So I guess it’s wise for us to understand a bit on what (or who) we are actually investing in. Treat it as a casual read if you wish. This post might be an unpopular opinion. Also most of contents below are researched on Chinese websites. I am merely a translator and this is not an investment advice at all. Also please point it out if any of the contents are inaccurate.
TLDR: YT Jia doesn’t have a good reputation here with his previous business (LeTV) in China. FFIE’s main selling point now is that they are the only Chinese EV manufacturer based in the US. Few days ago Biden imposed a 100% tariff (up from 25%) on EVs from China, and it might be possible that Chinese EV manufacturers will seek collaboration with FFIE to bypass the tariff.
Yueting Jia (YT Jia) is a businessman from China. He was the founder of LeTV in China in the 2000s.
LeTV first started as an online video sharing platform in 2005 and later on streams movies, TV programs and even livestreams sports events (Just imagine it was the Youtube and Netflix of China, but not as successful). LeTV was listed in China in 2010 and declared that they already achieved breakeven back in 2008.
In mid 2010s LeTV stated their intentions of building EVs in China and the US. Faraday Future was founded in 2014 by YT Jia and he left LeTV (but still the business owner I believe) and physically left China (and never returned) in July 2017 to focus on the EV business (he claimed). LeTV was in deep financial troubles and media start reporting in Oct 2017 that the IPO in 2010 was a financial fraud (No way that the company was breaking even back then).
He was on the national debtor blacklist in Dec 2017 as he ‘escaped’ China and left all his debts behind. All assets were froze by the CCP government. He received a CNY 241M fine in 2021 for financial fraud from 2007-2016 at LeTV.
Meanwhile in the US, FFIE and Jia himself weren’t doing any better. FFIE was originally backed by Chinese real estate conglomerate Evergrande in 2018 (for around USD $700M). The first payment of USD $500M was spent (or disappeared) without any explanation or justification to Evergrande, and they brought Jia to court for the lack of financial transparency in FFIE. After the court case, the court froze Jia’s assets and stakes in FFIE and he personally filed bankruptcy in 2019.
Fast forward to 2024, Jia filed a court case against his former employee Lei Ding. Ding joined the EV segment of LeTV back in 2014 and followed Jia to FFIE in 2015. He left in 2017 and set up his own EV company (HiPhi) in China. HiPhi targets the high end Chinese EV market with car models selling at CNY 600k-800k price points. They were actually sensational in China and sold around 10,000 cars in a few years time, but eventually stopped production in 2024 due to lack of funding.
Jia sues Ding in 2024 for stealing FFIE’s intellectual property and business confidential information to use on HiPhi EV products. What I wanted to point out here, is that if FFIE really takes off with our support and Jia isn’t a scam at all, their products may actually look like HiPhi. Search The Faraday Future FF91 on Youtube channel ’Vehicle Virgins’ and Hiphi X on ‘carwow’.
Recently Jia starts livestreaming on his social media platforms, mainly on commenting his competitors (e.g. the highly successful Xiaomi SU7 EV as well as the HiPhi cases). Rumours believed that he wants to leverage on his personal reputation to generate extra income from livestreaming, as well as media exposure for FFIE to collaborate with Chinese EV manufacturers in future.
Biden imposed a 100% tariff (up from 25%) on Chinese EVs to protect US jobs on 14 May. It coincided with the uprise of FFIE stocks. The Chinese commentators are linking FFIE with the tariff lately, claiming that with FFIE’s infrastructure and establishment in the US, and Jia’s connection and experiences with the Chinese market, the Chinese EV companies may use FFIE as a platform to launch and even manufacture EVs in the US.
With Jia’s track records, he’s not a popular figure in the Chinese world. Most of the Chinese-language forums are bearish on FFIE’s future, and personally I am still not fully convinced on FFIE’s long term future.
What I have faith on is Jia’s business insights - be it LeTV back in the 2000s when video streaming is still not a thing at all in China, or introducing EVs in 2014 when Tesla and the concept of EVs are still relatively new to China. With the huge support here, media coverage and all that financial indications (looking at the short interest and everything), I believe we can achieve something out there and hence encouraging everyone to study about what we are actually investing in.
If you read til here, thank you very much for your support. I type everything myself (with no bots, no Google translation, no Chatgpt nothing) and I am not a bot. Just here to share my insights and wish everyone of us are well informed on our investment decisions. It’s our hard earn cash that we are investing in and we shouldn’t treat it like gambling. Again this is not investment advices and I can’t say I really like FFIE, but I like this community and all the positives you all contributing, so thanks all for reading this, supporting each other and wish us all a successful fight on Monday and onwards. HODL 💎🙌🏻

2024.05.19 18:00 Silver_Degore Follow-up to my interview tomorrow

So I have a follow-up to my interview tomorrow, the process I went through that is. This is, by no means me doing a follow-up, nor waiting for a certain period of time and then asking where I am in the process. The manager and director of a department, the company I work as a temp (while employed under the temp agency - in a different department) had scheduled a time for me to meet tomorrow on Monday, I chose 1:30 PM as the time.
So no final decision was made, from my understanding of what the recruiter for the job position told me. They are going to discuss the process of the interview with me, feedback on the stages I went through. This really feels more unusual to me, because I've never heard of a company and/or department asking to do a "follow-up" with you - that's just my personal experience, (I tried to look for similar occurrences on Reddit or on the web on a company doing a follow-up with the interviewee - in person, but couldn't find anything, then again maybe it was there and I just didn't find it) when I'm more used to a decision being made; either you receive an offer or not.
I've already went through three rounds of an interview, first was with the recruiter, second was with the manager and director - about myself and my skills, experience, third was dealing with a questionnaire to test my critical thinking (with the manager and director present) - which tbh I felt like I did shit at, because it was all new stuff I've never dealt with before. It pretty much was the equivalent to getting a test and not having any way to study for it, it wasn't expected of me to get a right or wrong answer, just to see how I do, which I've felt I could've done better.
Should I take this as a good or bad sign? I honestly feel scared that I didn't get the job and was already thinking "why not just give me an answer and tell me I didn't get it?" Maybe this follow-up is to give me an offer, but I really don't want my expectations to be high - because I don't want to have gone through these hoops to miss the slam dunk at the end - which would anger anyone to go through all of this for it to lead to nothing. But I'd rather be ready in case this does crash and burn, so I can mitigate my frustrations as much as possible if I don't get the offer.
tl;dr I have a follow-up with the manager and director, they are doing it with me and I'm uncertain of how it will go.

2024.05.19 17:51 Hippopople Low score but a pass!

I just wanted to make a quick post for anyone who has test anxiety or has low scores on exams because that’s what I was looking for while on Reddit for motivation. I barely based step 1 and step 2ck but Im a bare minimums kinda guy so I was good with just passing on the first try.
Current pgy1 so finding time to study was really difficult when you’re getting used to residency with the steep curve that it is. About 4 months into residency I probably started doing 10q’s a day and made anki cards on ones I missed. I’d review maybe 10-20 while I was working on down time but I wasn’t strict about it, would do it just here and there.
Fast forward into March I took UWSA1 got a 180 and obviously freaked out knowing my step 3 was in the end of April, but then realized UWSA1 is a horrible practice exam with barely any correlation, so that made me feel somewhat better.
I also tried to take days off and do things that would de-stress me, (even days close to exam) I’m big into wellness and taking care of oneself; some days if I didn’t think I had the energy to study I wouldn’t. But that’s just me.
Then in April I finished uworld (58%) and started CCS cases. I never understood biostats for any usmle’s so I decided I would just take the loss on that as I usually do, and focused on CCS. 2 weeks before the exam took NBME 6 and got a 432 so my confidence went up and I felt ready. 1 week before exam took NBME 7 334 which made me concerned but it was still a pass I guess so I decided to go for it, all I needed was a pass.
I took day 1 and I surprisingly felt ok except for biostats, I knew I got all those wrong. I had about 7 days between day 1 and day 2 so in that week I only focused on CCS. I also decided to do free 137 or whatever it’s called and got a 68% which I think was good? Regardless I continued with CCS. When day 2 started I felt it was harder even though seemed like everyone said day 2 was easier; I came out feeling like I failed tbh. Waiting for my score I honestly did not feel good, but I guess that’s normal too. So after waiting a couple weeks I got my score and passed 209. It isn’t high but all I needed was a pass and now I can move into pgy2 w/o having this weight on shoulder. Very freeing feeling. Good luck guys, hope this helped anyone who is in the same boat as me and if I can do it you can too.

2024.05.19 17:50 sadneurostudent Is a health informatics degree a good fit for me?

I'm considering a transition into the field from a mental health care background. I have experience working as a practicioner in ABA, and most recently I've been a case manager at a community mental health organization. I'm feeling burnt out and extremely underpaid, and don't think providing direct care is for me - but I still have a passion for research and improving mental health care.
I have a BS in psychology and MS in neuroscience. I've taken a lot of statistics and research methods classes so I have a decent foundation for working with data, as well as research experience. I use Avatar in my current role so I have some experience with EHR as well. In addition to mental health, I also have an interest in clinical trials.
I've recently been looking into getting a second master's degree in health informatics - it seems to tick all of my boxes for a career change (higher pay, potential for fulfillment, not a direct care role) - but before I dive into it I want to make sure I'm not wasting time or money. I've read that healthcare providers looking to pivot into informatics typically are licensed practicioners, doctors, pharmacists, nurses etc. I'm obviously none of these but still have experience in health care - is my experience sufficient enough to be valuable in the field? I don't want to end up in a situation where I get another graduate degree and my resume/background just seems all over the place and without direction.

2024.05.19 17:48 tsunami1ena I can't decide what college course to take

I can't decide what college course to take
Hi! I am currently a senior and will be graduating next year so I really need advice so I can determine what college course is best for me. I'm really interested in medical courses (so the course that I want to focus on should be medical related). I'm not very familiar in all different kinds of medical courses so I would appreciate it if you would suggest some different course that would be in-line with my interests. ⬇️
So, I enjoy experimentations, I really love labs and I'm also interested in studying the human body. Based on my interest, I have BS Biology in mind but I think that that course would not be practical in the future for me (i heard that they have a low income here in my country) So, I think of BS Chemistry since it is also lab related which can be a safe option for me but, I can't fulfill my interest in human body if I choose that (I think so? I think bs chem is more about the environment or physical things that can be useful to humans like cosmetics or even those who are assigned to examine in crime scenes (JUST MY OPINION)).
I am also interested in becoming a scientist (pathologist or epidemiologist) since I am also interested in things that affects human body but I think being a scientist would take me some time so I need to choose a good start for me in my pre-med (I'm planning that after I graduate in my pre-med or bachelors (bs Chem or bs bio for example) I would apply for work (ex. Chemist) so while I'm a chemist I can have some money to help my family and support myself and then probably after work or while working I can study doctorate or masteral) that is how I view or plan my future but still I don't have much knowledge about those kinds of things so Idk the process after pre-med and while on med school. I don't know what to do on how to become a scientist. Can you give some info about the process on how to become a scientist? I'm really interested in knowing more about things like this.
So I'm really confused and undecided which to take but If I really can't figure this out by then I can choose to be a bs chem major or a nurse. So please help 🥲🥲

2024.05.19 17:42 HumanityFirstTheory [Case Study] GPT-4 succeeded on a coding project, while GPT-4o and Claude 3 Opus both failed

I had to build a simple Node.js application, I asked Claude Opus, GPT-4o, and GPT-4 to build it. I used the same exact prompt for all three.
Background Info:
I design websites for clients, and lately I've been feeding the entire text copy of sites into LLM's for new copy inspiration and to give LLM's an idea of what the business is about (to do things like sitemap optimization and creating new information architecture).
But, it's a time-consuming process to manually go in and update all the information. I decided to see if Claude 3, GPT-4, and GPT-4o could build a simple node.js app that would take in a sitemap and then create a full transcript of all of a website's copy, which I could then copy-and-paste into GPT or Claude.
The Prompt I Used:
I'm a web designer working on redesigning several sites for my clients. I need to generate a full text transcript of all the H2's and paragraphs used on their existing sites, but it is time-consuming to manually visit each page and copy + paste the content. Please build me a node.js app that will scrape the entire sitemap of a website, and then extract headings and paragraphs of each page, and then compile it all in one text document. The sitemap will be located on the /sitemap.xml page. On the results page, you should list the entire content in the left hand column and then have a button that says "Copy App" which will copy all the results into the clipboard. Include all H2's and Paragraphs from each page you crawl in the final transcript. Thanks!
The Results:
Model Result Did it fix its code when fed the error message?
Claude 3 Opus Failed, code did not work. No, despite being fed the console error numerous times.
GPT-4o Failed, code did not work. No, despite being fed the console error numerous times.
GPT-4 Succeeded from the first attempt. -
Discussion:
Despite trying to nudge both Claude 3 Opus and GPT-4o in the right direction by telling it what was going wrong, both did not fix their errors and instead introduced more errors.
GPT-4 was the only model that got everything right from the first-go *and* made some changes to the code base successfully when I asked it to (I wanted it to exclude all blogs from the final transcript).
I really hope that they do not remove GPT-4 and force GPT-4o on us.
I also used Claude 3 Opus when it first came out and I swear they did something to it to make it worse. I remember it being much more competent at code. I built an entire template showcase marketplace for a popular website builder platform with Claude 3 Opus when it first came out.
Curious to hear what your experiences are.

2024.05.19 17:40 CognicionARtificial Artificial Intelligence vs. Traditional Psychotherapy

I am a psychology student currently developing a thesis with the hypothesis: The performance of virtual assistants based on artificial intelligence is equivalent to that of psychotherapists in the initial approach to a clinical case.
In my study, clinical psychology experts will be shown responses from both the AI virtual assistant and a licensed psychologist through a simple blind test. They will evaluate these responses on dimensions such as a) Interaction Skills, b) Intervention Skills, and c) Response Characteristics.
What do you think of this hypothesis? What methodological and ethical challenges might I encounter in developing this study? Any suggestions you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

2024.05.19 17:40 GroundbreakingTeam94 I need advice on my family situation.

Who's to blame: Overbearing family, or college student?
I’m a 19-year-old black guy, and I’ve been grappling with some serious family issues concerning my mother and grandparents. It's a lot to unpack, so buckle up:
Growing up, it was just my mother and I, as my dad was in and out of the picture due to my parents' divorce. My grandparents played a significant role too, doting on me since I was an only child, and my mother was also the sole child in her family. Given our circumstances, my mother tended to be excessively protective, perhaps stemming from my early years spent in and out of hospitals due to medical concerns. Being the center of attention came with the territory, I suppose.
At 17, I began experimenting with substances like nicotine, weed, and alcohol with my best friend, a common scenario among kids my age. I’d sneak around, hiding these escapades from my mother. Freshman year in college rolled around, and so did more experimentation. Unfortunately, someone from my friend circle spilled the beans about my college shenanigans to my mother and their parents, leading to increased suffocation when I returned home. I got banned from my best friend's house for a period of time because of it. Additionally, my mother caught me high once, further worsening the situation. To me, it all felt blown out of proportion, considering it was typical teen/young adult behavior from the peers I was around.
Continuing my transition into college life, my mother never really provided a safe space for open communication. It felt like she was always breathing down my neck, fostering an environment of secrecy. As they say, strict parents breed sneaky kids. Moreover, my family’s insistence on regular church attendance felt stifling.
As I matured, my mother's grip seemed to tighten, suffocating any semblance of space I needed. More often than not, we clashed, and she persistently pushed for a closer bond. With that made coming home for breaks a struggle, and enjoyment going back to school after the breaks were over.
By sophomore year, I found myself delving into my studies as needed, hookup culture, a little bit of partying, piercings, more drugs, and then dating. The girl I was seeing didn’t attend my college but lived nearby. We clicked on a dating site and in real life, and I’d occasionally visit her place once we got comfortable with the idea. Her parents didn't know at first but didn't really care once they found out. In fact, once they met me, they came to like me because of my character and career plans. Though my mother and grandmother reacted with disdain at her and my actions, criticizing her career choice in cosmetology, her White ethnicity, and her action to bring me to her parent's house while they weren't there. With those factors, they accused her of being promiscuous, which is nowhere near the case.
Academically, I’m pursuing an engineering degree, managing to maintain my scholarships despite knowing I could do better. Fast forward to yesterday: I was discussing my grades with my grandmother, with my mother present. Which felt like a horrible mistake as my mother brought up my choices and who I was sleeping with, which snowballed into my mother prying the truth out of me in front of my grandmother. It was so bad my mother wanted to answer my grandmother's questions for me, with an irritated smile on her face, but luckily my grandmother shut her down and waited for my honest responses, which I for the most part gave.
During the conversation about the girl, my grandmother and mother made a joke about me being on a leash like my dog, which, in hindsight, felt more like mockery than humor. Moreover, my grandmother's ominous warning about potential legal consequences if I continued to visit her house against my family's wishes was unsettling. She claimed to have connections to the local police department near my school, which added an extra layer of fear and coercion. With that said my grandmother felt that I'd be better off locked up than be at the girl's house because of unreasonable safety reasons.
Additionally, my mother and grandma resorted to comparing me unfavorably to my cousin, who dropped out of college and got a girl pregnant. This comparison only served to exacerbate tensions and feelings of inadequacy.
Reflecting on everything, I made the tough call to end my relationship to appease my family. They judged her based on superficial criteria, and I couldn’t bear to subject her to their scrutiny any longer, so we broke up.
My relationship with my dad isn’t without its tensions, but he’s the one who speaks candidly, even if his words aren’t sugar-coated. After recent events, tensions with my mother have escalated. I yearn for her to loosen her grip, to allow our relationship to evolve naturally rather than being forced. I could say the same thing about my grandfather as well, but he only stays involved in my academic life.
My friends and my now ex agree – my family’s stance on my relationship and actions was wild. So, I'd like to know, am I 100% at fault or does my family have a part to play? Please help me figure this out. There's still a little bit of tension between me and my mother.

2024.05.19 17:34 SouthVisual826 What was your experience like in any Nursing MBO here in the Netherlands as a non-native Dutch speaker?

Hey guys,
I posted on the Netherlands reddit but I think it’s more appropriate here:
For the past few weeks, I have been considering next year going back for an MBO study for nursing (verpleegkundige). I read somewhere on one of the official Dutch website that an MBO studies requires an B1 Dutch level, which I should obtain shortly in the next month or two, but I don’t feel ready yet to take on a study yet. I’d like to focus on Dutch first for the next year and get as far as I can, then go in 2025.
If anyone has any experience with being a non-native speaker but has done an MBO study, particularly in nursing, could you let me know what to expect? And have you had good experiences with the study or in the field of nursing? Thank you in advance! ✨

2024.05.19 17:34 LGBTQIA_Over50 Will a law firm hire a former whistleblower to work as a paralegal in the Chicago area?

I can list my credentials and positive qualities about myself.
And then I can listen to outsiders list the negatives.
I am an honest woman, who has faced systemic barriers, due to age (now), my never married- childfree status, (gender non-conforming).
I see people suggest things like apply to be a legal secretary or admin, "it takes time to train you to become a paralegal."
But they don't know what I can do and have done. They assume I have the same skills that they do, the same knowledge and learning capacity.
No one asks me questions and just glances at my resume but doesn't know what skills I used in those jobs.
Maybe I am qualified to study for LSAT to apply for law school. Maybe I have that skill level, but due to health and financial reasons, I can't do that, so Paralegal work is just fine.
Maybe I wrote my own petition, motions and interacted with opposing counsel, and used Pacer.
How much "training," would it really take me to be a paralegal if I already worked in Insurance, Mortgage, Property Management and all areas of Human Resources?
I've performed analytical and research work, used proprietary software systems, Microsoft, Teams, and performed confidential file case management work.
Despite some people's beliefs that college isn't necessary, I've worked my way through college twice, earning a little beyond a Masters including professional industry certifications. Some people say degrees are worthless. I don't generalize like that. Some people work and go to school at night, others, lived on campus all 4 years and enjoyed the college experience.
I have not denigrated anyone for graduating from college.
I not shamed anyone for choosing marriage and children. But those who do, have a different skill set than a woman who never took the mommy and wife route.
Many completely long term singles developed survival skill, resourcefulness, and interpersonal skills, all while remaining single and childfree in our family-centric world.
I need to be honest. If you were an attorney looking to hire a paralegal, I would build trust and he transparent and share about my prior Civil legal matters. I'd have to. And then I would hope that you would recognize my integrity, and courage, to stand up for what is right and for doing what is right, despite being blacklisted from working in the private sector.
Does anyone know of a law firm who would potentially consider me for paralegal work in Illinois? I would absolutely love this kind of work.
I need an income for an apt, utilities, food, car, insurance for car, health, dental, vision, and living needs to be successful.

2024.05.19 17:32 OkMuffin8545 Placement advice?

Third year student about to qualify and currently on management placement in a nursing home. Wasn’t my cup of tea but I’ve managed with what I could and most of the time I get on ok.
Been having some issues that really brings down my morale and makes me dread to come in. I have last sign offs in my book that my other placements wanted to be done at my management. Mentor 1 is ok, but they informed me that some carers didn’t know if I was counted in the numbers, which I confirmed that it shouldn’t be the case. Some carers still expect me to be on the floor at all times for personal care, but I have other priorities as well to do my nursing care. I have never turned down people asking me to help with doubles or give a hand when there’s chaos going on, but I think it’s ridiculous the amount of personal care I have had to do which has affected me learning things like their online systems for notes and care plans as well as contacting external health services, which I still feel like I can improve this. There’s a lot that I have missed out to learn and witness from health visits because I have been busy with personal care tasks.
Mentor 2 also has asked me to be on the floor with the carers to “get to know your patients better” which I honestly felt was insulting. I have been proactive in getting to know residents and their families to the best of my abilities despite being there only over a month, and they have good rapport with me and there haven’t been any complaints raised about me. Mentor 2 also has a habit of rushing me with tasks and scolding me for not chasing things up right away despite me having to juggle personal care, making sure carers are supported and do nursing tasks/run for meds.
I’ll be honest and say sometimes the vibes are not it and it’s baffling to see grown ups act so cliquey.
The manager has even told me I should be on the floor with the carers despite me being on the floor 75% of the time and the other 15% is me running around crazy trying to do the jobs that the nurses need to chase up on. They also told me if I have concerns with carers not understanding my role as a student then I should have that conversation with them, but that feels like it isn’t my place to say as I have no authority. It just feels overwhelming and I’m almost being used as an assistant at times instead of an almost qualified health practitioner.
Sadly I feel like I cannot seek support with my personal tutor or university with this as my mentor is my reference for my NQN application and I wouldn’t want to be at a disadvantage if they are pissed off that I have put in a bad word. I spoke to the PEF about what should be expected of a management student at a care home and they had informed me I had leadership roles to prioritise, but it’s basically impossible trying to allocate tasks to people that are twice your age and don’t respect you. I understand burnout and short staff are big factors to these clashes in staff, and I leave in the summer, but I genuinely hate this placement experience and feel not like I am ready to finish up.
Is there any way to deal with these issues that won’t affect the rest of my time here? I’m at odds with how to approach this without a confrontation.

2024.05.19 17:32 Rosybara718 Not being sure about my first language

I lived in various countries till I was 18 and I came back to my home country the same year and I'm living here up till now. I was raised in a family where my parents are both non-English speakers but me myself used English at school and with my friends. In casual talks, I'm okay with both. I am more comfortable studying and giving public speeches in English. Technically, if I go by order, English is my second language. But I started feel a discrepancy between my first language and my second language ever since I came back to my home country. I realized when it comes to academics English is my dominant language. So if I consider speaking both languages in both casual and formal settings, English would cover both while my first language would only cover the first case. But I am not quite familiar with idioms or colloquialism in English. I always identified myself as a native to my country and I am quite sure I also culturally align with my country as well. BUT I consider my language identity is English for I am more comfortable expressing and organizing thoughts. in it.
In an effort to seek an answer to this, I asked ChatGPT to evaluate my language proficiency of both languages. It said that based on the conversations we had for the past two days, it came to a conclusion that English is NOT my first language (ofc I shouldn't trust it completely). But the thing is that it made the judgement based on the fact that I spoke too formally and directly in a manner that native speakers wouldn't do in a casual conversation. But wouldn't the level of formality further prove that you are more proficient and fluent in that language? Do you think this is a valid reason to judge whether certain language is their mother tongue or not? As I mentioned in the earlier paragraph, I don't use many idiomatic expressions when I use English. But just because of that, does that make English my second language? What do you think?

2024.05.19 17:32 Ginger_Witcher NICU therapists - nitrogen washout for SPX, especially in premie?

I just started working PRN at a rural facility. They have a small nursery, and sort of an ad hoc "nicu". The latter is only supposed to hold minimally distressed babies for 24 hrs and then ship if no resolution. There is no neonatologist on site, in fact it appears to be mid levels and teledoc.
In the past two weeks I've seen 2 SPXs. The first one crumped and had to be shipped after the mid attempted a needle decomp. I come back in for my next shift and I'm told in report there is now a 36 weeker upstairs with a SPX on 100% O2 in an attempt to perform a nitrogen washout. Turns out the baby had bilateral SPXs and had already been there for 8 hrs at this point.
I'm not a NICU RRT. I have basic NRP and have assisted in scores of high-risk deliveries, but that's about it aside from clinical rotations 14 years ago. That being said, the only studies I've read on nitrogen washout say there is no spx resolution benefit in neoantes and they advise against it for hyperoxygenation (as we're all trained in school) risks.
Are there recent studies I've missed? Does your NICU do this? I talked to the baby's nurse and the house supervisor after my first check on the baby and couldn't get anything done even though they both agreed. The baby would up getting shipped out after 6 more hours on 100% O2 and another unsuccessful needle decomp. I have serious doubts about the safety of babies at this facility now. If I'm wrong, please show me the data. I'd be happy to be wrong about this. All the other RTs at the fac share my concern.
Thanks.

2024.05.19 17:31 WrongLander Has Encanto (2021) been profitable for Disney?

Budget, $120 million. Box office, $257 million. In any other context, the answer would be "no," and indeed in certain online circles I see folks continuing to insist it was an abject flop nobody cares about – but Encanto is a fascinating case study because of its post-box office life.
On streaming, the film exploded, and now is a reliable merch machine for the company. New product lines continue to be launched featuring its characters. Park experiences have either debuted or are planned (the godawful Dinoland in Animal Kingdom is being axed in favour of Encanto and Indiana Jones), and you'll just as commonly see a little Mirabel wandering Epcot as you will Elsas or Rapunzels. This is to say nothing of the soundtrack, which topped the charts globally.
With all this in mind, has the film turned a profit at this stage? What do we think are the odds of Disney revisiting this IP for a sequel or series? It's a very unique, interesting example of how home media can salvage a movie.

2024.05.19 17:26 SmoothBarnacle4891 "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER" (2022) Commentary

During the height of my high regard for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), among the movies of which I had been a major fan were the Captain America releases. At least two of them. The third film in this mini franchise - 2016's "CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR" proved to be a major disappointment for me. However, when I heard that Disney and Marvel Films had plans to air a miniseries about the characters Sam Wilson aka the Falcon and James "Bucky" Barnes aka the Winter Soldier, I must admit that I felt a renewed interest in the franchise again.
When I said a renewal of the MCU franchise, I meant it. Aside from a few movies like "ANT-MAN", "BLACK PANTHER", "CAPTAIN MARVEL" and "ETERNALS"; the MCU had become a major disappointment for me ever since the release of 2015's "THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON". One might ask . . . what about the MCU television productions that aired on the Disney Plus streaming channel? Aside from one production that I somewhat liked and one that I loved, most of them have been disappointing to me. Unfortunately, I have to include this follow-up to the Captain America movies, "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER".
Set six months after 2019's "THE AVENGERS: ENDGAME", "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER" followed former war veteran/Avenger Sam Wilson, who has resumed working the for the U.S. government, while using his role as the Falcon. When the government recruits Sam to track down and deal with a group of enhanced anarchists known as "the Flag Smashers", former World War II veteran/HYDRA tool/Avenger James "Bucky" Buchannan aka the Winter Soldier decides to join Sam in his mission, due to his lingering guilt as a former HYDRA assassin and their shared experiences as Steve Rogers' close friends and battling Thanos and his army.
Since "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER" had aired on the DisneyPlus channel in six episodes, I had seriously considered ranking the episodes. But like Season three of the Marvel Netflix series, "DAREDEVIL", the more I watched "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLIDER", the more it disappointed me. Aside from complaints about its pacing, the limited series had received a great deal of praise from critics and fans alike. Because of this, I believe it was one of the most overrated productions in the MCU history. People had seemed so focused on little moments and scenes that very few had noticed how the series' narrative seemed to be all over the map. For example:
~\Sam Wilson~* - This limited series is supposed to be a follow up to the events of "ENDGAME" in which Sam had received the Captain America shield from an aging Steve Rogers, a sign for him to take up the latter's costumed role. Was this an attempt by Marvel Films/Disney to make Sam a more relevant character? If so, why? Why did a MCU character have to replace Steve as the new Captain America to be more relevant? Why not allow Sam to continue as the Falcon, only push his role to the forefront as one of the franchise's new leading characters? Some might accuse me of not wanting a black man as Captain America, a topic that was brought up in the series. Frankly, I never wanted another character - regardless of race, gender or ethnicity - to become the new Captain America. That includes Bucky Barnes. Allow Steve Rogers to fade into the background and let Sam (as the Falcon) shine as one of the franchise's new leads. However, the die has been cast. One can only sit back and see if moviegoers are willing to accept Sam as the new Captain America.
Perhaps the MCU had to make Sam the new Captain America in order to make him more relevant. Why would I say that? The showrunner for "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER", Malcolm Spellman, came dangerously close to shoving Sam into the role of the second lead or worst, a role he has been since his debut in 2014's "CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER" - a supporting character. During the series' first three or four episodes, someone other than Sam (either Bucky Barnes or Helmut Zemo - two white men) made decisions that allowed the plot to move forward, not Sam. He was simply regulated to being an observer or reactor. The series even managed to undermine Sam's decision not to support the Sokovia Accords in "CIVIL WAR". In thee 2016, Sam became the first Avenger to speak out against the Accords and declare his intentions not to sign it. Yet, according to Bucky in this series, Sam had merely followed Steve's example in rejecting the Accords. And Spellman did nothing to allow Sam to correct this misconception.
~\James "Bucky" Barnes~* - One of the few aspects of "CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR" I found enjoyable proved to be the interactions between Sam Wilson and Bucky Buchannan. Despite their lingering jealousy and competition over the role as "Steve Rogers' best friend", the pair's interactions proved to be very entertaining, thanks to the screen chemistry between Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan. Unfortunately, Mackie and Stan could not save "CIVIL WAR" for me. Nor could they save "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER", due to its problematic writing. A good deal of that writing surrounded Bucky's character. I have so many questions about his role in this series. For example:
-Why would any official of the Joint Counter Terrorist Center allow Bucky to visit and question Helmut Zemo, the man responsible for the U.N. conference bombing in Vienna, in "CIVIL WAR"? That made very little sense to me. Surely the JCTC authorities remembered how Zemo managed to brainwash Bucky into making his own prison break in "CIVIL WAR"? Also, Bucky was on parole for his activities as a brainwashed HYDRA assassin. Yet, the JCTC had allowed him to visit Zemo? Surely, the showrunner could have allowed Sam, who was serving the U.S. government again, to be the one to visit and question Zemo?
-How on earth did Bucky managed to evade being arrested and charged for helping Zemo escape from the JCTC? The U.S. and other governments should have been suspicious of Bucky after learning about his visit to Zemo.
-Bucky came off as an arrogant school jock, who thought he was entitled to get his way - especially in his interactions with Sam. I found it hilarious that many fans had criticized John Walker aka Captain America aka U.S. Agent for such toxic behavior. Yet, they had turned a blind eye to Bucky's own behavior. And so did the series - up until the last two episodes. Why did the showrunner allow Bucky to get away with this behavior toward Sam for so long without any complaints from the latter?
-I did not care how Bucky had bullied his way into Sam's mission without the latter's consent. What I found even more annoying was the U.S. government's decision to allow Bucky to join Sam's mission after that ludicrous "therapy session" they were forced to attend together.
~\Racism -~* A good number of MCU fans had complained about the inclusion of racism in "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER". I had no problems with this direction, considering the story was about Sam, an African-American man, becoming the new Captain America. However, I had a good deal of problems with how the production explored the topic of racism.
The story of Isaiah Bradley, Marvel's second Captain America, had originated in the comics. In the MCU, he was a Korea War veteran whom the United States Army used as one of several unwilling African-American test subjects for their version of the Super Soldier serum. I realize that both Marvel Comics and the MCU had attempted to use Bradley's experience as a metaphor for the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. The problem is that I cannot see the U.S. government and the Army - both racist organizations in the early 1950s - be willing to risk the possibility of creating a non-white super soldier. Despite the recent desegregation of the Armed Forces in the late 1940s. And both the government and the Army had been more than willing to use white soldiers in other experiments.
After saving a group of black American super soldiers from a prison camp, Bradly was imprisoned by the U.S. government for thirty years. I saw nothing wrong with this twist in the character's narrative, until I remembered two things - Bradley had been able to free his fellow soldiers without anyone's help; and nearly sixty years later, Steve Rogers managed to break into the Raft and free those Avengers who had refused to sign the Sokovia Accord. Why was Bradley unable to free himself from prison? This is the man who had defeated the Winter Soldier by breaking the latter's metal arm. And he was not powerful enough to make a prison break, let alone evade capture?
I had assumed Sam's difficulty in becoming the new Captain America would stem from the government's reluctance to recruit a black man for the position. That would explain their decision to recruit the blond-haired John Walker instead. But the series never really made it clear whether political racism had played a role in Walker's recruitment. The series also had James "Rhodey" Rhodes had paid Sam a visit, emphasizing the importance of the new Captain America being black. As it turned out, Sam's own insecurities about becoming Captain America had more to do with him not initially assuming the role. There was also that interesting scene outside Bradley's Baltimore home where the police arrested Sam during verbal argument with Bucky. Although the cops backed away when they recognized Sam as an Avenger, they ended up arresting the parolee Bucky for missing his required therapy appointment. This scene was supposed to be a case of racial profiling. But . . . we might as well be honest. In the real world, the police would not have backed down from hassling Sam. What I found more disturbing was the production's handling of Bucky's arrest. Once the police discovers that Sam was an Avenger; they turned to arrest Bucky for failing to show up for his missing his therapy session. Not only did the police arrest Bucky with a more gentle behavior, they did so, accompanied by Henry Jackman's mournful score, something that did not accompany the moment of Sam being arrested. Were the audiences expected to notice the hypocrisy and racism in the police's handling of the two men? Expected to feel sympathy for Bucky? Or both?
The last episode featured a scene of two black kids playing with toy Captain America shields. Someone had commented that the shields (especially in the hands of non-white children) represented hope to the future of race relations in the United States. Why? How? This country had a biracial president for EIGHT YEARS. Yet, U.S. racial policies have remained problematic even to this day. I can say the same for other countries. The so-called symbolism of this scene only reminded me of how human beings put so much faith in imagery and symbolism. And this strikes me as a FALSE FAITH. Why was taking up the mantle of a costumed hero that had been previously occupied by a white man, the only way for Sam Wilson to become relevant within the MCU franchise? What was wrong with him being "the Falcon"? Sam becoming the next Captain America was not going to save the U.S. in regard to race relations - not in real life and not in the fictional world of the MCU. Looking back on the series, the series' only scenario that seemed to expose racism in a realistic manner, proved to be Sam's failure to acquire a bank loan for his family's fishing boat in Louisiana.
~\Sharon Carter~* - I am certain many MCU fans are aware of this. One of Marvel Comics' most iconic couples happened to be Steve Rogers aka Captain America and Sharon Carter aka Agent 13. She also happened to be the great-niece of Peggy Carter, Steve's love interest during World War II. Portrayed by Emily VanCamp, Sharon was first introduced as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in "CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER" as a potential love interest for Steve. Despite Sharon's appearance in the following Captain America movie, "CIVIL WAR", their romance never really developed. Many blamed the lack of chemistry between VanCamp and Chris Evans. I never had a problem with their screen chemistry. I had a problem with the lack of relationship development between Sharon and Steve. And I blame Kevin Feige's decision to transform the third Captain America film into a third (and badly written) pseudo Avengers movie. The change in the film's narrative, along with Sharon's failure to appear in "THE AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR" and "ENDGAME", left no opportunity for Sharon and Steve to become the romantic pair they had been in the comics. Instead, Sharon became a fugitive from the U.S. government after helping Steve and Sam hunt down Bucky, moved to Madripoor, a city-state with no U.S. extradition and became an embittered criminal known as "the Power Broker".
After "CIVIL WAR", nearly five years had passed before Sharon appeared in another MCU production - namely this series. And what happened? The franchise, with Spellman, ended up completely destroying her character by transforming her into the villain known as Power Broker, the criminal leader of an Indonesian city-state called Madripoor. After helping Steve and Sam acquire their suits and equipment in order to go after Bucky in "CIVIL WAR", Sharon lost her job with the C.I.A. and became a fugitive. She eventually moved to Madripoor, a city-state with no U.S. extradition, to evade capture, survived Thanos' Snap and became an embittered criminal nicknamed "the Power Broker" in order to survive the new world.
What really pissed me off about Sharon's arc between "CIVIL WAR" and "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER" is that her development into a major villain all happened OFF SCREEN. Off screen. Apparently, screenwriters for "INFINITY WAR" had written a draft that included Sharon in the movie. But according to Christopher Markus, he and Stephen McFeeley could not imagine scenes featuring Steve and Sharon trying to make it work in an apartment, because the 2018 movie did not have time to focus on their personal life. Why did Marvel simply fail to allow Sharon to be part of Steve's vigilante team - like Sam and Natasha Romanoff? I mean . . . good fucking grief! And why did Malcolm Spellman believe the only way Sharon could be interesting was to become a villain in "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER"? This was his idea of improving Sharon's character?
~\Helmut Zemo aka Baron Zemo~* - Why did Malcolm Spellman, Kevin Feige and the MCU thought it necessary to bring back Helmut Zemo, the Sokovian-born villain from "CIVIL WAR"? What role did he play in "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER"? I realize that Bucky, of all people, visited the incarcerated Zemo to acquire information on who had created the super-soldier serum that empowered the Flag Smashers. But why did he believe Zemo could provide the answer? Because he thought HYDRA was involved? Bucky or Sam could have searched for information from sources other than Zemo, who had been incarcerated for . . . what? Eight years? Eight years. Zemo managed to become something of a crowd-pleaser, thanks to Daniel Brühl's performance. Otherwise, I found his presence in this series unnecessary.
~\The Big Bad~* - Why on earth did it take this series so long to finally reveal the main villain's identity? At first, the series hinted the Flag Smashers, led by Karli Morgenthau. However, the series tossed other potential candidates for the Big Bad before viewers - John Walker, Helmut Zemo and yes, Sharon Carter. But in the end, Morgenthau and her group proved to be the main villains.
The Flag Smashers were a group of empowered people who believed the world was a better place between Thanos' Snap and the Blip (resurrection of those who had died during the Snap), when Humans around the world managed to unite and form a borderless society, one in which people helped others without any thought to nationalism and bias. Thanks to the Avengers, the world resumed its conflicts between nationalities and other groups. In other words, the borders returned.
Frankly, I have nothing against this ideal. Only Ms. Morgenthau and her followers resorted to violence and terrorism to achieve their goals. Does this sound familiar? It should. The Flag Smashers proved to be another example of characters with a progressive goal, resorting to extremism and becoming villains. This seemed to be a growing trend within the franchise, which I believe began with Erik "Killmonger" Stevens aka Prince N'Jadaka in 2018's "BLACK PANTHER". Since then, the MCU has not looked back at its growing roster of progressive villains. Perhaps I should not have been surprised. The franchise's ambiguous portrayal of an unconstitutional document like the Sokovia Accords, should have been the wake-up call. It seemed as if Kevin Feige, Marvel Films and Disney Studios had finally exposed themselves for the faux progressives they pretend to be. Frankly, this form of villainy has become tiresome to me.
After writing this article, I had considered ranking the six episodes featured in "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER" anyway. But I decided against it. My dislike of the series made it impossible for me to even bother. Being a fan of the first two Captain America movies, I had truly hoped this series would redeem the franchise. Unfortunately, it proved to be just as disappointing as "CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR". Pity. Perhaps the fourth film, "CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD" will do the trick. I hope so.

2024.05.19 17:18 ConsistentCook4106 61 Male Recent Heart Attack

On the 15th I had a heart attack while at work. Now my work is very demanding and physical.
I work at a limestone mine, we manufacture cement. While climbing down several flights of stairs, I got this sharp pain in my chest. I thought man I ate my lunch to fast.
Once out both of my arms became heavy and started to hurt real bad. We continued to our next stop with the chest pain increasing.
I told my partner, we work in pairs for safety, I said let’s go to the break area, I’m going to drink some Gatorade and call 911 I’m having a heart attack.
It took 25 minutes for the ambulance to arrive, out plant is out in the middle of nowhere. The ride to the hospital was nearly 30 minutes and in the meantime the pain is getting worse.
Once I arrived at hospital it was no more than 15 minutes and I was upstairs.
My heart attack lasted over an hour, once the second stent was put in, 95% blockage, the pain started subsiding.
The next day the cardiologist came to my room and this is where things went south kinda.
I have been on testosterone replacement for 12 years and I explained I was not going to stop after he told me to. I explained it was not just recreational but other factors, I also explained I was not going to stop my daily does of 5mg cialis, because their are benefits and it was prescribed for late night bathroom trips but the sex it amazing.
I asked the doctor to show me scientific studies on testosterone and he just looked at me. I provided him with several where there were no cases that showed testosterone affected the heart.
The next day he called me instead of coming to the room. He informed me I was being discharged and I would need to find another cardiologist for a follow up appointment
Any thoughts? I am out of work for 2 weeks

2024.05.19 17:09 j-Lou_182 32 [F] UK/Anywhere - Seeking friends, maybe more. Any ONE OK ROCK fans in the UK?

Hey! Here I am posting again because to be quite honest, I've found Reddit more successful than dating apps in terms of meeting people... who'd have thought?!
I'm an ex casting technician/orthopaedic nurse and I'm now working in the histology labs at my local hospital, hoping to study for my biomedical degree within the next year or two.
I'm just as happy being indoors as I am outdoors. I enjoy gaming and anime (although work and life means I don't have that much time for it anymore) I jokingly call myself a weeb, but I'm honestly not into the cringiness of all that. I love having a good Netflix binge of my favourite comfort shows. Other interests I have are reading, cooking, baking, visiting museums and galleries. Aquariums and zoos are cool too. Spending time with friends and family and going to farmer's markets, on hikes and beack strolls and going out for food are some of my more outdoorsy activities. I used to play ice hockey and tennis until an ACL and meniscus injury took me out.
If you're interested in chatting or wanna know more, hmu - Although I'll be honest, I'm getting pretty sick of all the dick pics in my inbox, as an ex nurse I've seen more than my fair share and I don't find them that impressive hahaha.
OH! Also, if there's anyone heading to the ONE OK ROCK concert in London this October it would be cool to meet people there as I'm heading there solo.

2024.05.19 17:05 No_Pomegranate7134 Why people look down on about manual labor or minimum wage jobs when they exist for a specific reason and purpose? Would it mean they will replace EVERY job out there with robots, even doctors, lawyers and policemen for instance, as they are still done by humans?

Saying that "better" jobs exist is used as a mere excuse for some people not willing to work, like at all. Since people in the West always say that, but the truth is that they DO NOT want to work or burn some sweat, workers from poorer countries immigrating to Western countries that are desperate for employment don't care if the job is manual labor or sitting in an office cubicle for a long time, as long as it gives them a stable salary, since they exchange dollars, euros or pounds back into their local currencies to send back to their loved ones back home, so they remain indifferent if they are paid small, as like any other human, you need money to survive the contemporary society.
So, to put it, there is no point for people to talk shit or berate people who work minimum wage jobs (at the end, they will waste their own time for doing that), as they also play a part on maintenance, cleaniness or customer service and relations, it'll be completely stupid to get rid of garbage collectors or cleaners for example, as who else would tidy all of the mess up either on the streets or in your office? Robots can't do literally everything for you, as some interactions require humans to be around, like lawyers or doctors, since they need HUMANS (not robots) to have a more personal or clearer interaction with other people.
How can a robot be able to read your human emotions when you are upset, can it predict or assume if you have committed a crime, or what the verdict would be before the judge announces it? Are you going to lay off all human surgeons, doctors and nurses just to replace all of it with AI and robotics? People got to understand that jobs regardless if they are manual labor or not, have a purpose in their own way. (As why else have humans evolved through out history, it started from "manual labor" so there is zero reason to despite it so much.)
You might be surprised that jobs people consider "shit" have large salaries, for this reason: "It's niche, and no one wants to do it, only those who are willing to." as they are looking for those who willing choose to work in professions people consider "shit" by the masses. There is literally no reason for people to berate or talk shit about any job regardless if it is manual labor, minimum wage, or a white collar one, since human history they existed for their purpose prior to the industrial revolution and digital age, don't forget not all jobs can be replaced by robots and AI:
For instance, if there was an employer who was like:
So, which one are you tempted to take despite "manual labor" job having a higher salary by this employer, as they consider that people don't want to do it, or are looking for a specific canididate who remains indifferent to the public opinion on job seeking?
So, people would only understand if "you've been through their shoes" as saying that someone working for minimum wage or manual labor is a "inferior" person to in comparison to somebody who is employed at a white collar job with a suit and tie, is just plain stupid. It's either that:
It's like saying to garbage collectors, store clerks, couriers, uber drivers, and etc. suck, if that was the case, then they'll just walk out and NEVER come back, nowadays especially with social media, they can just brag about how they are treated, it's like a cog in a machine, if they are going to find a new one, it may not be as easy once the word spreads that the companies treat them like slaves, then people would not be interested, as they want to be treated with respect, not like an animal chained to a post.
If no one replaced those who all left, overtime they'll start to lose money and the companies who employ those sectors become defunct, even for the highest paying ones that require specific skills, still need actual humans to fill in those spots, not robots. Have you ever encountered (any of) these in real life, like at all:
You can imagine what that would do to humans, as what would be the purpose of humans existing if everything was automated, machines like all technology break down, as of now, to fix and replace their physical components within a physical body, you still need a HUMAN technician. Even the female robot living in Saudi still has a HUMAN owner, as a HUMAN created her, she did not create herself.
Put it like this, if people despite minimum wage or labor jobs so much, consider these factors:
