2024.06.09 00:02 Realistic-Assist-396 Rock Bands With Female Vocalists/Prominent Female Members
I listen to a lot of rock music, and one of my favorite bands of all time is Paramore (Hayley Williams was my high-school celebrity crush for a number of years, actually). It got me interested in checking out other rock bands with female vocalists or prominent female members.
So far, I've checked out: Blondie; Cranberries; Fleetwood Mac; Garbage; Heart; Hole; Joan Jett and the Blackhearts; No Doubt; Smashing Pumpkins; Sonic Youth; and Veruca Salt. Some solo acts I've liked include Angela Strehli; Samantha Fish; Siouxise Sioux; and Stevie Nicks.
Any other bands or artists I should give a listen to?

2024.06.06 20:05 BeMyEscapeProject Essay/Podcast on the Impact of 00s Paramore
Hello all,
I've started a project writing essays about Pop Punk & Emo albums from the 00s that I consider to be important. I want to go more into the background of these albums, what makes them special and what they say about the time they were made- and the people who made them.
I knew one of the first bands I wanted to cover was Paramore due to the impact Hayley Williams had/has on a whole generation of scene girls. Who had grown up loving bands, but never seeing themselves on stage.
In the essay and podcast I unpack this, and contextualise Paramore's 2007 Riot as an especially needed breath of fresh air in a genre and scene that was going a bit stale.
You can find the essay
here on substack and the
Podcast is on Spotify Thanks for checking it out!

2024.06.05 23:02 2014YearEndRate 2014 Billboard Year End Hot 100 Rate
Lately I’ve been, I’ve been losing sleep
Thinking about the things that we could be.
Ten years! Can you believe it has been that long since the year of our lord, 2014? So much happened! Remember the Ice Bucket Challenge? Remember Lip Sync Battle? Remember Alex from Target?
… You don’t? Well, too bad! It’s the perfect time to readdress all of those things and more, breaking in just over a decade after everything happened! This whole rate comes from me seeing people talking about how much the music from the 2010s was better than what we have now, and I thought- but truly was it? Or do we look through it with nostalgia glasses, because those songs were there in important moments of our lives? Do we think those things because it’s hard to step away from a present that, honestly, is pretty dire?
This is a rate of escapism, but also taking off our rose-colored glasses. Do you want to tell me that the songs from ten years ago were better than the ones we got today? Well, put your money where your mouth is!
If you want a head start!
Here is the
ballot! If that doesn’t work, the
pastebin should! If you can’t send it through reddit, I am in the

Rules
Thank you to ExtraEater, whose segment I am stealing word for word (including example song!)
- Listen to each song and assign each one a score between 1 and 10. Decimals are fine, but it can only be to 1 decimal place (8.5 is fine, 8.2 is fine, 8.58 is not).
- You may give ONE song a 0 and ONE song an 11. Please reserve these ratings for your least favorite and most favorite tracks, respectively. You may not give your 0 or 11 to the bonus tracks.
- You must listen to and score EVERY song in the main rate. Check to make sure you've scored everything.
- Your scores and comments should NOT be considered confidential.
- You can change your scores at any time! Feel free to PM me (u/CrimsonROSET) about it.
- Please use the prepared link below to send in your scores. You must use the correct format.
- If you want to attach a comment to a specific song (which is encouraged!) write it right after your score. Make sure nothing is separating your score and your comment except for a space!
This is the ONE AND ONLY correct format:
Pitbull feat. Ke$ha - Timber: 11 This is the best song ever made
These formats are INCORRECT:
Pitbull feat. Ke$ha - Timber: 11: This is the best song ever made
Pitbull feat. Ke$ha - Timber: This is the best song ever made! 11
Pitbull feat. Ke$ha - Timber: I'm giving this an 11. It's the best song ever made
Pitbull feat. Ke$ha - Timber: 11-This is the best song ever made
BONUS RATE: DJ Earworm 2014
Ah, you smart little fiend! You noticed I snuck in one more song at the end of the ballot! That’s right, as is tradition with year end rates, the last song is the
popular mash-up by DJ Earworm!! This one is purely optional, you won’t get shot on the spot for filling it out- I was just deadly curious for where it’s going to end up!
And consider doing the other open rates:
And consider submitting a list of your favorite songs of 2014 to help compile the list of
Popheads' Top 100 Songs of 2014, due June 16th!
Once again, the

2024.06.05 15:17 Upset-Opposite2041 The Funeral of Ian Chesterton
In memory of William Russell.
Ian Chesterton's funeral was held in a small church in East London on a cloudy afternoon in early June. For a man who had achieved so much in his ninety years, Ian's final journey seemed a bit too modest. He was a beloved teacher, a somewhat famous writer, and a former Governor of Coal Hill School. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people had crossed paths with him, and most wouldn't have minded setting aside half a day’s schedule to listen to his eulogy. However, Ian had specified in his will that his funeral should be held in this rather small church. The already limited seating was further divided into three sections by two ribbons. Uninvited guests, those who came merely for a glass of champagne, were specifically requested by Ian in his will to sit in the back.
An hour before the ceremony began, those who were important in Ian's life arrived one by one, holding white invitations, and sat in the middle section of the church. Only two of Ian's old university rugby mates were still alive, and they quickly struck up a conversation in the noisy atmosphere. Several of Ian's closest colleagues from his long teaching career sat beside them. The "ladies and gentlemen of Coal Hill School" formed Ian's closest circle. They often met at a pub on Totter’s Lane, both before and after retirement, but Ian had rarely joined them since Barbara's passing. Yet, even without his presence, he remained a frequent topic of conversation among the group. "Dashing Ian," "Audacious Ian," "Ian who won the beauty's heart"—everyone relished sharing stories of this veteran's heroic yet silly deeds at Coal Hill School. Tales of him drunkenly climbing the school fence late at night, decisively throwing a student's boiling reagent out the window during a lab session, and dealing with a troublesome girl student were particularly popular. The most talked-about topic, however, was Ian and Barbara's two-year "missionary work in Africa." While they had no reason to doubt Ian and Barbara's integrity, they also couldn't fully believe it. Richard often said that he overheard Ian and Barbara discussing something about a "junkyard" a few days before their sudden disappearance. "So, until they reappeared, I always suspected they were tracking some outlaw… What nonsense, right? Fortunately, it was just my imagination." Mick, who always argued with Ian, would say, "It's hard to imagine Ian going on a missionary trip. You all know he never believed in anything without proof. Typical science teacher. One time I told him at midnight that I saw a gypsy move her caravan with a spell, and he didn't believe me at all. How did that old hag steal my wallet and disappear then? A guy like him going to Africa to preach? He'd probably demand God come out and argue with him." Nevertheless, Ian indeed disappeared for two whole years, worrying his old friends. When he reappeared, they all gave him the cold shoulder for nearly a month. "Did you elope with Barbara and then found Gretna Green too cold?" Mick would tease Ian whenever he could, but Ian would just laugh and hug Barbara without a word. What was certain was that Ian had been with Barbara for those two years, and shortly after their return, they got married.
Though Mick usually liked to mock Ian, he shed the most tears at Ian's wedding and now, at his funeral.
What else was certain about those two years was that Ian had experienced many extraordinary things. Once, after that period, Ian encountered a student being mugged on his way home. He picked up a toilet plunger from a corner and charged at the knife-wielding muggers, who fled in shock. Except for Mick, who mocked Ian's absurd choice of weapon, everyone else praised his bravery. When asked where his courage came from, Ian would just fiddle with his fingers and say, "I've seen worse." Sometimes, Ian would ramble drunkenly in front of his old friends. On one occasion, he insisted he was a knight, knighted by Richard the Lionheart, and demanded they call him "Sir Ian." Everyone laughed at him when he was sober again. "
Why don't you put that imagination to use in writing? I hear all great writers are a bit mad," Mick said, gripping Ian's shoulders.
Ian might owe Mick for that suggestion because he did start writing. He and Barbara became a novelist duo. Their whimsical works, starting from local newspapers to the largest publishers in the southeast, gradually gained popularity. Their most famous book, featuring pepper-pot robots invading Earth, was even made into a movie starring the renowned Peter Cushing. Ian generously secured autographs for everyone in his circle.
Life went on for Ian. Despite his flourishing writing career, he neither indulged in nor clung to it. To him, writing seemed like a form of catharsis; once he was done, he felt no need to continue. After completing his sixteenth book, Ian and Barbara announced their retirement in The Times, leading to a swarm of pesky reporters filling the corridors of Coal Hill School. However, over time, the public seemed to forget about Ian. His books still sold well, but he could finally fully immerse himself back into his beloved teaching career. Ian's hair gradually turned gray, and when he found himself unable to derive formulas, he had to leave the classroom and take a seat on the board of governors. Old friends remained around him, but time eventually caught up with their friendship. Barbara's health declined, and she could no longer attend gatherings. Richard was the first to leave them; his wife found him collapsed at their bedroom door one morning. At Richard's farewell, Ian was more silent than the rest, muttering to himself and frequently checking his watch.
At the first gathering without Richard, no one knew how to start. After a while, Ian seemed to gather great resolve. "There are some things I think I should tell you, while you can still hear them."
This was the first time everyone heard Ian's incredible story from his own mouth. His novels weren't purely imaginary. "Indeed, we could guess," Mick couldn't help but interject. During the two years Ian and Barbara disappeared, they embarked on an unimaginable journey. On this journey were a peculiar white-haired old man, his granddaughter, and a blue phone box that could travel through time and space. Ian spoke these things like a dream, and everyone listened in stunned silence, their mouths half-open, revealing missing teeth. Ian glanced around and gave a bitter smile. "I know this is hard to believe, and I'm still trying to prove it really happened." "If it's true," Mick rapped his knuckles on the table, "that old man is quite something. All these years, and he never came to visit you and Barbara?"
"It's not his fault; he can't control that phone box," Ian shook his head. "But I have a feeling he might not age like us. Though he looked old when I met him, I always felt he's still out there somewhere, traveling in his crazy box. One day, he'll figure out how to drive it. Let's wait together."
Barbara didn't make it. At her funeral, nothing unusual happened, and Ian sat there looking ashen. Mick walked up behind him and placed his hands on Ian's shoulders as usual. Everyone expected him to say something inappropriate, but Mick said, "Don't wait for him, we are always here."
After this, Ian rarely attended their gatherings. Whenever they talked about Ian, their old enthusiasm was tinged with a bit of regret. Now they were gathered again for their final farewell to Ian. Tears filled everyone's eyes as they exchanged memories of Ian. But Mick, usually so talkative about Ian, wept silently. When the whispers in the crowd began to quiet down, Mick finally approached them, pulling out an envelope from his coat.
"Everyone, Ian left me this. I received it last night. He wanted you all to hear what's inside." The old teachers from Coal Hill School leaned in, some turning on their hearing aids. Mick stood trembling, opened the envelope, and read aloud:
"Mick and my dear friends,
By the time you receive this letter, I should be queuing on the golden steps of heaven. Regardless of how you feel right now, I want to say that the best way to honor my memory is to prove that my lifelong obsession wasn't a fantasy.
Though you are the best people I've ever met, I can still feel that some of you remain skeptical about my 'white-haired old man,' especially you, Mick. So, please watch closely, here comes my proof.
I was fortunate enough to join an organization in my final days and form a support group with people who had similar experiences. Due to certain confidentiality requirements, I'm not allowed to say much, but I've heard they're currently facing a very tricky situation and need all hands on deck, so they probably won't be able to come to my farewell. However, through this organization, I managed to send out a special invitation. It's blue.
Please look to the front of the church, in front of the first ribbon. I don't know how many people will be there, but they all received the same blue invitation. And believe it or not, they're all that white-haired old man.
As for the original white-haired old man himself, I still don't know if he ever learned to control his box before changing into another form. But it doesn't matter anymore. Let him be.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Ian Chesterton
In their astonishment, Ian's old friends stood up one by one to look at the front rows of seats. Mick had been staring there in a daze for quite a while. The area surrounded by ribbons was already filled. Indeed, there were two white-haired men, but their hairstyles were very wild and didn’t quite match Ian's description. Besides them, there was a whole group of people dressed in various laughable outfits. One baby-faced individual wore a khaki shirt with a red bow tie; another person had a long coat over a blue suit; yet another had a scarf that was at least four meters long. There was a black man dressed in an orange sweater that almost blended with the chair he sat on. Additionally, there was a blonde woman playing with a Rubik's cube, a red-haired person in a velvet green jacket, a short individual with an umbrella on his lap, a young man in cricket attire, and a tough-looking guy in leather with his arms crossed over his chest. The most surprising figure among them was someone dressed flamboyantly in an outfit that looked like it had been fashioned from a rainbow. Each of these individuals had a blue invitation beside them, but the invitations varied noticeably: some were pristine, while others were bent or faded like old newspapers.
Before anyone had time to process this information, the bells rang. Ian’s old friends sat down solemnly, awaiting the start of the funeral. As the coffin was brought in, those with sharp eyes noticed that the people in the front rows lowered their heads. Some removed their hats, while others clasped their hands in prayer. A small man with a Beatles-like haircut took out a recorder and began to play "Auld Lang Syne," the sound of which was almost drowned out by the booming pipe organ.
To passersby outside the church, it seemed there were suddenly many old-fashioned telephone booths on the street. Other than that, everything seemed normal.

2024.06.03 19:41 PostHopeful4599 In This Essay, I will...
I'm not totally sure that this belongs here and I'm not new to the theory, but Olivia Rodrigo's The Grudge has to be about Taylor. I believe it shows Taylor's need to crush any artist that may challenge her. Here's a breakdown of the lyrics:
I have nightmares each week about that Friday in May One phone call from you and my entire world was changed - Sour Was released May 21, 2021 (a Friday). It's possible that Taylor's team waited until the album was released before she informed Olivia's team of the demand for a writing credit. Deja Vu was released as a single April 1, 2021, but many artists wait awhile before preparing some sort of legal action. When you look at Blurred Lines, the song was released as a single in March of 2013, but lawsuits weren't brought up until October, and that's just when we know they were filed. Who knows what was happening behind the scenes.
Let's not forget too that Hayley Williams is a close friend of Taylors and is on tour with her now and opened the Era's tour with her. I think a lot of people were surprised by Paramore's actions on Olivia because Hayley is generally seen as an industry sweetheart, but it definitely changed my view of her.
Trust that you betrayed, confusion that still lingers Took everything I loved and crushed it in between your fingers - Taking 50% credit and labeling Olivia as a plagiarizer STILL haunts her career. As soon as Vampire came out as a single, people online were immediately trying to draw parallels between it and other songs to show how Olivia isn't original.
And I doubt you ever think about the damage that you did But I hold onto every detail like my life depends on it My undying love, now I hold it like a grudge And I hear your voice every time that I think I'm not enough - My undying love is the key here. This is a theme through the song. We know Olivia was a massive Taylor fan, and now she feels like the love she had is tainted and it brings up feelings of ill will. Like her love and support of Taylor helped Taylor but then was crushed.
The arguments that I have won against you in my head In the shower, in the car and in the mirror before bed Yeah, I'm so tough when I'm alone and I make you feel so guilty And I fantasize about a time you're a little fuckin' sorry - I think this is all pretty self explanatory in context here, but this is a young woman trying to make sense of it all. Trying to have a voice in a situation where she felt like she couldn't have one. The credit was dictated to her so she felt like she just had to bow down and take it, but now that she's a little older and has her own fans she's going back in her head of all the things she'd say now. We all have moments of doing this with people who have wronged us.
And I try to understand why you would do this all to me You must be insecure, you must be so unhappy - Again, a young woman trying to wrap her head around why someone would do what she did. This doesn't feel like a break up. This is a betrayal. This is something that Olivia did not see coming. Saying that this person is insecure and unhappy speaks to Taylor's insecurity over new artists coming in and taking her throne. Taylor herself has written about this is two songs: Clara Bow and Nothing New. Olivia is commenting on how there is room at the top for both of them, but the one already there can't handle it.
And I know in my heart hurt people hurt people And we both drew blood, but, man, those cuts were never equal - All of the last point plus adding that the person Olivia is feuding with is of higher standing. The cuts were never equal because of the power dynamic between them. The couldn't EVER be equal.
Ooh, do you think I deserved it all? Ooh, your flowers filled with vitriol You built me up to watch me fall - The bridge is probably the most obvious part that screams "THIS IS ABOUT TAYLOR" which is fun because Taylor is the queen of bridges. Olivia knew was she was doing here. Flowers filled with vitriol - It's like Taylor fake built up Olivia because at first she thought maybe if she kept her close that her jealousy would subside. It was all for show because Taylor knew Olivia was a fan and that's good press for her. Everything she does is calculated so if a new upcoming artist is popular, why not look like the good person and build them up so everyone swoons over the support, meanwhile Taylor was holding distain. That leads into the "You Built me up to watch me fall." If Taylor hadn't thrown so much support behind Olivia, there's no telling if she would have been as popular. Olivia is immensely talented and had fans of her own before the debut of Sour, but Taylor's support drove Driver's License up further on the charts and it became a pop culture *moment.* If Taylor hadn't done that before the lawsuit, Olivia wouldn't have fallen so hard when the news came out.
You have everything and you still want more The last line of the bridge really says it all so I wanted to highlight it more.

2024.06.03 07:01 protectivecoma [TOMT] Forgot The Name of This Niche TikToker Artist
I'm unsure of this'll apply here since, well- it's a person but this is a little different. This person isn't attached to a company, not a celebrity, not a historical figure- nothing like that just a humble artist and animator, I think they only had a few thousand followers maybe even less than a thousand, I can't remember. But they were known for a A Silver Eyes fnaf movie trailer they did for a big passion project a there's which was making a Silver Eyes movie, they even made their own personal designs for the characters which they uploaded to their Instagram and TikTok- the trailer itself was uploaded to YouTube but I can no longer find it. It was of William Afton talking about Circus Baby and I don't think it was colored, their could've been two versions though- a rough draft and a final with color. They were a huge Bradley Uppercrust fan, uploaded a few speed paints or something like that and I think one had Andrew Webber's version of Mama Mia in the background and I remember another TikTok of there's was of The Pronouns Song by Jimmy (Jack Wild) and it had a little animated boy singing it wasoa tragic haircut lol. Their art perfectly captured A Goofy Movie so well abd I'd really hope to find them again if they haven't terminated their Internet presence (if they have that's totally valid though, just was thinking of them). I hope this post is given an exception for the people rule, thank you everyone :) (also I think they were active from 2019-2021, it gets a bit fuzzy for me)
