2024.06.09 00:28 ConfusedDumpsterFire Denying it makes it…worse?

Hi everyone. I just joined this sub. I’m not sure if this is where I should be, but I’m going to tell my story, particularly the events of the last 3 years. This is even my main account - I don’t care anymore.
I’ve always had…something. My maternal grandmother was similar, and as I get older, I have reacted to it in very much the same manner. To ignore it and will it away to the best of my ability. She only ever talked about it twice, and once she threw it on me because I was the subject of her feeling. She didn’t dream anymore (I also don’t dream anymore) and when I expressed true sadness over that, she said it was better this way. It took me a long time to understand. She was right. The only other time she ever talked about it was one holiday when my mother was going on about psychics (my mom doesn’t have the same thing but she has this odd…jealousy/obsession. I don’t think she understands that I would give her every ounce of what she thinks she wants if I could). My grandmother and I were in the kitchen cleaning up and she just quietly said to me, ‘It is a curse, not a blessing’.
As an overview, when I was younger, I would have dreams. I will even experience (I hate to call them) visions, that for me present as persistent gif-like moments images/action sequences. Quick flashes of events or people, or whatever that do not go away until something passes. I tend to know things. Something I’ve always kind of said to myself is that I know people instantly. Not what you had for lunch today or how old you were when your first pet died, but on a different level. I know people. It’s a fatal flaw. I am also drawn to rescuing them. I’m quick to think and I see holes in plans/execution/processes easily. I also can feel things around me differently than other people seem to. My relationship with my house growing up is a whole post in itself.
I stopped dreaming when I was 21. A series of images and dreams of two overlapping similar events kind of broke my brain a bit. I kept seeing car accidents - two distinctly separate car accidents, but equally bad. Every single time I closed my eyes. One was primary and the other was secondary. It was different than before because it was just a lot. It was chaotic. Then I got a call from my brother. My mother was in a head on car accident and was very seriously injured. She had to have an entire facial reconstruction. That was the first accident…I saw where in the road and the car that hit her, over and over. Not long later, I get another call. My brother was in a car accident. That was the second accident I kept seeing - woods and a red car. He had to have a hip replacement.
Nothing from then on. I don’t dream anymore. Very, very rarely. Through my twenties, I attracted people on occasion. There was one man that kind of defined a strange part of most of a decade for me. He never remembered my name or face. I even met him for coffee once. Every single time, though, in the most random areas of the city, he found me and would go on and on about my aura. It happened frequently enough that I considered him a friend. I’ve had other people that gravitate toward me in similar ways.
I’ve spent the last almost 20 years denying this part of myself. I don’t want it and I don’t acknowledge it. Fast forward to three years ago. My now ex partner of nearly 13 years became a Capitol storming, woman hating incel. It started in January of 2018, and by January of 2021, he was…I’m not going to have time to get to it, but I can finally say out loud that he is what he is because I reported him and it is off of me, finally. It has really, really fucked with my health.
In April of 2021, he lied to me, brought me to a gun show, and bought a semi-automatic rifle. That day, as suggested by my therapist a d verified by Google, I began a world class PTSD recurrence. It was bad. Bad, bad. I can tell you the exact date and time it began because I had time stamps. I started writing something on my phone and I did not stop for three weeks. I wrote the equivalent of two full length novels about my life. I started getting horrible flashbacks and these fast, never ending flip book style images. I was physically reacting to things that weren’t happening, like I would duck and cover my face as if I was going to be hit. It was covid and I was the only one who had to go into the office once a week. Thank fucking god there were no witnesses. I worked in a locked suite on what became an empty floor. Every single time I came and went, I checked every office, corner, and under every desk and cubicle. I hid under my desk one day as I emptied out my file cabinet to see if I could fit inside of it. It was bad. I was arguably delusional.
The first doctor I looked for was my psychologist. I was clearly fucking mental. I still see him. Then I urgently needed to see a gynecologist. Don’t know why I felt that way. But I did and it was pressing, enough that I convinced the receptionist to squeeze me in. The very next day, I started my period like normal. It stopped the day after. It started again two days after that and didn’t stop again for over a month. I was still on my period when I had that appointment. It changed the context of the appointment from a regular annual to a more emergent thing. She did blood work and ordered imaging. I was so unconcerned that I didn’t bother to schedule the imaging or look at the lab results. In the meantime, everyone around me was having emergencies. My friend’s daughter had a brain tumor. That was my first last minute trip. My best friend’s dad got an aggressive and fast cancer. My next two last second day trips were to see his dad and go to his funeral. My own brother fell out of a tree and stabbed himself in the chest with pruning shears, then ONE WEEK LATER had to have an emergency surgery because his intestines turned into a vacuum and sucked up another part of his intestines. They did the surgery pro bono because it was such an uncommon thing to happen and they used it for research. While he was in the hospital from that surgery, my stepsister died of Covid. That was the 4th last minute trip. A couple weeks later, my friend with the brain tumor daughter came to visit with his girls like they did every year. Their mom died young and it’s just the three of them. While they were here, there were things that concerned me a lot. Then his oldest had a full melt down in which she pissed herself, hid from him in my room, and scream cried at me about rape and suicide. I had to involve CPS in their state.
I didn’t schedule my scans until the day of what was supposed to be my follow up. It was right before my brother fell out of the tree. I woke up in a panic and tore my house apart looking for the order. I found it and rescheduled everything. Got my scans and went to my follow up. Everything was bad. She panicked and thought I had ovarian cancer. She ran a cancer antigen blood test which came back normal but she told me I needed to follow up with my primary because in addition to my platelets and white blood cells being so elevated, my adrenal hormones were extremely high and that was even more urgent. I’m going to skip the rest of what happened with me, except to say that in this process it was discovered that I also have a gall stone, diverticulosis, a hernia, a cyst on my kidney, and some other reproductive lesions. No cancer. This is about when they first started tellng me they suspect lupus. I didn't tell anyone except my therapist, partner, and uncle. There was too much going on with my brother and stepsister. My entire system corrected in very much the same manner it went fucking berserk. I could pinpoint the exact time and date. I had more labs two days later and my levels had plummeted. They were still high but just barely. Mental health-wise, same. It just stopped. By the time I got into the endocrinologist, it was like nothing had happened, except it just happened to be so well documented in my labs. Even my follow up imaging showed the monster on my ovary was gone.
So my brother has this surgery. We were each other's only local family, so it was me in the hospital with him every time. The surgeon said they looked for cancer but didn't find any cancer. Just this week, I was sitting in a different hospital room in a different city with my mother, who just had to have an emergency surgery for a bowel resection and colostomy, as her surgeon came in and said verbatim what my brother's did. They said it was caused by diverticulitis, but right before this surgery she was put on a drug. Her platelets and WBCs are extremely elevated. They found my brother's cancer 9 months later after repeatedly sending him home with antibiotics and telling him it was just an infection. It was testicular cancer. It wasn't even the cancer that killed him. He did, with fentanyl.
When my friend's daughter got her tumor, I talked to god. I don't talk to god. I asked that her cancer was put in me instead. It was just about two months later that the gynecologist thought i had cancer. At the same time, my best friend's dad and my little brother both got cancer. They are both dead now.
I had another major health scare this year. This time, I suddenly lost hearing in one ear and they thought I might have had a bran tumor, stroke, or seizure. This time all the specialists that didn't get to me last time got their chance. I don't have lupus, so everyone can shut up about it now. They keep saying it's stress.
I think I'm manifesting what used to come as dreams and visions as my own serious physical ailments, before they happen to the people I love. Or maybe it's that most of the people I know have died in the last few years and I'm losing it a little. Because what I just said sounds crazy.
Has anyone experienced anything like this?

2024.06.09 00:25 Brilliantmind1997 26 [F4M] Georgia,USA -Seeking a long term monogamous relationship (serious inquiries only)

Do Not message or add me just to unfriend me or ghost me. That will not be tolerated so DON'T WASTE MY TIME Greetings future partner ❤️ I'm still searching for you. I have to be honest and say that I am losing hope trying to find you. Please be somewhere. I want my search for a partner to be over. I'm seeking adventure in my life with someone I can call a forever partner. I'm tired of the loneliness and the sheltered lifestyle that I've lived. It would mean a lot of you could read through this post so that I could make sure we are compatible. Even if we start off as friends that would be fine.
Here's to new beginnings and new connections. PLEASE make sure you READ through the WHOLE POST also please be respectful when messaging me * *If you're the type to be impatient, block, or ghost easily, then save both of us the trouble and DO NOT message me! I'm not trying to come off as mean but I'd much rather you not message me if you're the type of person to do that. If something isn't working just let me know. We're all adults.
Greetings, I am seeking a long term relationship monogamous with the end goal being matrimony. I am not one for playing around and being used casually as it doesn’t suit me personally. Ideally I'd prefer a man that has his life already in place so that I can be able to share life with him and for him to take care of me. I would expect my future man to have a financially stable job and be able to support me and our future family. I wouldn’t be opposed to being a housewife. There are few reasons why I would like to work or work part time: 1) Being abandoned with nothing, 2) I want to feel fulfilled and not bored. Happy to discuss possible dynamics, I'm flexible. I would love a synergistic partnership where we are both able to mold our minds and fill our hearts with warm affection. I will be there to support you throughout your journey and celebrate every moment with you. I want you to be proud of you just as you are with me. I want to show you that you are truly cared for and appreciated by gestures of love such as massages and other forms of entertainment. I would expect the same from you as well. Even if we are both working adults we can still make our relationship work in the best way possible. I have seen this come out well for people who are dedicated and willing to make their relationships work. For a strong relationship to occur I would expect effective (transparent) communication from you. If you are going to be busy just be honest and let me know you won’t be able to talk to me.Also, if you need your space both mentally and physically let me know. I understand that we all have our lives to attend to but it is incredibly important for people in a relationship to be transparent when circumstances arise in a timely manner in order to avoid future conflict. If this relationship isn’t going to work I would expect you to tell me and not ghost or block me before giving me a reason why. We are all adults so I would expect nothing but maturity. Starting out I don’t want the pressure of sex to be pushed onto me. I’d rather let time tell in all of its glory.
Now onto my true introduction
My name is Angie and I'm from Georgia in the United States. I've been lonely for quite some time and find it hard to find a soulmate in IRL. What I'm looking for is someone who I can connect with and have wholesome conversations with. I want to be able to treat my future soulmate well just as much as they do me. The biggest part of a long lasting relationship is the ability to communicate openly without worry. I'd love it if my significant other has a dark sense of humor and continues to crack me up non-stop. As cheesy as it may sound I long for those late night calls and cute texts. I want for us to drive out the very best in each other; become our support system. A little bit about me is that I grew up in Florida and not too long ago moved to Georgia. I'm currently in college to become an RN but I'm also passionate about cosmetic chemistry and nutrition so I may seek to build my own business in the future. I'm passionate about science and theoretical applications especially within the medical field. I'd appreciate it if my partner is open minded about varying topics and welcomes healthy conversations. Appearance wise I'm open to seeing if we have a connection and feel as long as you are well groomed and practice basic hygiene you are good. Although, I must say that attraction is key in a relationship so I will have to go off on that as well. To add on, I enjoy playing video games, exercising (I've been slacking off lately), cooking and baking (vegan), playing board games, reading, exploring nature, playing sports (basketball and soccer) for fun, and trying new experiences. I hope to save up and travel someday. It would be nice for my partner to be able to set up our travel itinerary.
My Physical Description:
I am a black woman who’s twenty five years old (almost 26 in December) with Afro-Carribean, Japanese and Swedish ancestry. I’d still consider myself black presenting since that’s more along the lines of what I appear as phenotypically. I have dark brown curly hair (Mainly 3c type curls) and brown eyes. I am 5 '4 on the thicker spectrum (not at all obese but thick boned and have thunder thighs). I am trying to exercise more to become fit. I used to weight lift when I was younger but since then have lost lean muscle mass. Having a partner that is willing to work out together sometimes is rather rewarding. A man who has drive and appeal is incredibly sexy. I would also like to point out that I am curvy and noticeable in certain aspects (I’ll leave it up to you to decide).
*You have to be MINIMUM 21 to date me *
If distance will be a problem and you aren't willing to make it work then DON'T MESSAGE ME!!
If you will be too busy to pursue a relationship then DO NOT contact me!! * *Again, No ghosters or blockers!! Seeking a person who seeks a relationship with God and/or is open to one Must be free from venerial diseases and must be willing to get tested(will discuss) Bonus points if you're vegan Ideally I would like someone that is taller than me (I’m 5’4) I prefer a man that is fit or trying to be. I'd prefer someone who is fiscally stable and able to support the both of us* A big red flag for me is smokers. It isn't good for your health nor is it sexy to me.* It's important for me to point out that I want children in the future and need someone who may want that as well. If you're interested in how I look and want to know more about me, message me. Although I don’t make it a huge deal, I do prefer White and East Asian men. But I do love all types of men and welcome them. As stated before I emphasize communication and would prefer you to be honest and say if something is wrong instead of ghosting or blocking without stating the reason. Fair warning if I can be socially awkward sometimes and don't know what to talk about so please be patient with me as I'm learning to be better conversation wise

2024.06.08 22:26 Rip--Van--Winkle Cold Brew Kamairicha at Shenandoah National Park

Cold Brew Kamairicha at Shenandoah National Park
Here I am drinking some Kamairicha Japanese tea that I cold brewed over night. Took a break to eat lunch by a waterfall about 4 miles into my 10 mile hike. Really beautiful day out.
You may be wondering why I am drinking green tea out of a flask. Well originally I was planning on filling that flask with whiskey, and having a few sips on my hiking journey. So I ordered a flask and figured it’d be a cool little thing to have when I reached a peaceful place or atop a mountain.
There was one issue though that I forgot. That issue is that you are not legally allowed to drink and carry a gun, and since I am hiking alone I’m going to always bring a gun. There are really only black bears at Shenandoah but it’s people i’m more wary of. So I decided it would be best not to commit felonies on federal property.
Naturally my favorite liquid is tea, so it was an easy replacement. I don’t have it in me to bring boiling water or mini stoves to do gong fu in the woods. I also don’t really care about the temperature of drinks so I was happy to drink lukewarm green tea. Honestly it was delicious along with some granola.
In the end, it is probably best I don’t bring whiskey with me anyways. Over the last couple of years I have had a pretty unhealthy relationship with drinking. It never got to the point of being totally out control, but i’d use it as an excuse to hang out in my apartment, instead of going out in the world and bettering myself.
This isn’t the first post where I have talked about my mental or physical health, but I wanted to share the interesting Yin and Yang of the two liquids in my life. One has become connected with bad decisions and the other is connected with me taking care of my health. I actually started drinking tea after coffee was doing bad things to my body.
There isn’t really a moral to this story. (There usually isn’t). Just wanted to share some tea I was drinking on a 10 mile hike. Trying to make changes to rebuild my life after essentially starting over. I hope tea is a healthy force in your life that brings you joy and caffeination.

2024.06.08 22:18 Hintek Calming Capital

Times have been tough recently, maybe you’ve been dealing with some bad luck, maybe your minds been beating you down extra bad lately, friend or family problems, whatever the reason, you’ve taken a walk. Honestly, it had helped a little, following the dirt path into the beauty of nature.
However there was a calling deep in the ground, you looked longingly into the soil, the insecurities within your mind fading out as you wandered ever closer.
In the distance you could see the object that created the calling. When you looked at it, only then and truly was your mind clear.

These spaces are only accessible to people close to you and will be closed off to any general human public.
The Building you saw was the -

Colourful Cottage - Getting closer and closer to the cottage you noticed a few things. The trees covered in beautiful chalk patterns, beautiful flowers in painted pots spread around the clearing. Directly in the centre of the clearing was a cute stone cottage, the walls contain beautiful murals and pieces of graffiti, just outside is an entire set of painting materials, from canvas to pastel.
The building itself includes a personal study, a bathroom, a storage that seems to fill itself with resources that run out. The insides contain much more of these artistic materials allowing for all forms of creation, including digital!
If you go past the Cottage you will find an array of woodland critters and many pathways to smaller clearings where you can sit and set up shop. These pathways have the artwork of many others, maybe you can make your mark here too. Anything you create here you can take back and rest assured whatever you do take back will not be lost or broken in the journey back.

Beach-side Bungalow - The clearing soon went from soil to sand, a wooden bungalow, the front of which looking out into the most beautiful blue beach. The pink sand, warm to the touch. A heavenly touch of the sun shining down. The waves rolling calmly.
The building itself includes a bedroom, tiki bar, dressing room with swim suits and other swimming related items, and a bathroom. Many drinks of all kinds line the shelves, as well as piles of exotic fruits that seemingly refuse to go bad.
Past the Bungalow is the beautiful beach. Chairs and towels line sections of the beach, along with umbrellas. On the left is a small fishing boat filled with all the essentials needed to go fishing. Fish of all kinds float in these waters, some would pay a fortune for some of these, you are very welcome to take all of your catches back.

Acorn Apartments - The clearing contained a large set, a small complex of apartments, eight doors in total, wandering to and fro into the forest was spirit like people. These people are the type you would only hear of in the Japanese tales of yokai, it made sense how the apartment complex was reminiscent of the ones you would see.
Your apartment is a small studio apartment as all the others are, of course taking on japanese architecture. There is a bathroom, space for what could be considered a lounge and bedroom, the kitchen is on the other side of this room. There is a communal bathhouse just beside the building, run by one of its residents.
The spirits are incredibly friendly and are welcome in becoming friends with the eighth resident of the complex. They are also comfortable to give the new human resident tasks that they can no longer partake in as spirits, in return they can give blessings or objects. Tasks like, go help this sweet sick old lady to learn the basics of a whole other language which may or may not be dead, the rewards could range from a teapot that makes any tea a soothing pot to a book that could import a term of classes in your head, very rare indeed. They will be very grateful and will not at all mind if you decline.

Twilight Treehouse - The clearing contains a huge tree as wide as a house and as tall as five entire stories. The branches could be considered walkways into other trees. In the trees floor of planks are filled with many kinds of furniture. Lanterns of large paper stars follow these pathways into the other areas around the trees.
There’s lots of space in these floors to look up to the stars. The tree includes an area filled with various powerful telescopes and cameras. A place where star-maps of thousands of years have been categorised from parchment to usb sticks. There are also tools of all kinds to record the night sky yourself. A gorgeous past-time and any map and record you create will be incredibly valuable to Astro-Based Researchers everywhere.
For some-reason whenever you’re here it’s always night. The stars move as if they have a mind of their own, comets fly frequently. But by a will you can make it stop. Create incredible constellations. The power of the night, controlled by a tree. As an added bonus during your starsign’s month, you could see as good as any telescope with your eyes alone.

Whole Wheat Windmill - The clearing instead leads into a beautiful field, other than dirt paths, wheat covers a huge area of the fields directly in the middle of the fields is a large dutch windmill connected to a small bakery. A cobblestone base, but everything is made heavily out of strong woods.
When walking inside you enter a waiting area first with tables and chairs, from this point you can see a countertop and past that is a large kitchen with old but incredibly productive cast iron ovens. There is a small bookshelf in this area filled with many recipes of pastries and baked goods. Past the kitchen is a small bedroom and kitchen.
And lastly, of course is the windmill. It is self working of course, however you’ll need to supply the wheat yourself. The fields will always be fertile, but you must still take the time to maintain them. This place is quite different on this list, as people will be allowed to come by and buy baked goods, this will lead to a steady and above average income, only getting better as your baking skills get better.

Mix’n’Match Mentality - A special offer for those who really need the calming sensation, or those who can’t make a decision on just one. Instead take two of the choices and fuse them, put in the comments what you create.

Life can be tough sometimes! Hydrate, think and recuperate! Humans can be allowed to rest. Have a lovely time-zone!

2024.06.08 22:02 RRc3MultilevelFirm My Journey from curb to bedrock

My Journey from curb to bedrock
Many might tell you that homeless is a mindset and the individuals who fall through the gaps and cracks of society are the ones to blame because they should dis this that and the third!
No one in their right mind wakes up and says let’s start a fire and ruin my life so I can be homeless Yeah! Not even the case and it’s absurd to think such!
My life changed 11.16.24 for the worst following my eviction from the home I had worked hard to get for me and my partner at the time who I’d later find was behind the scene of the demolition process that would eventually come to destroy the very core of my existence. Nevertheless, I’ve pushed and tried to stay above the curve every day for the past 7 months.
I went from living in a 1200sqft 1 large bedroom apartment with outside patio w/private entry in San Diego, CA in 2021 to being outside living in the woods just a week before I’d finally land a job at the Salvation Army in Miamisburg, OH which lasted a week due to evil and corrupt individuals who can stand to see not even the misfortune person around them to succeed that being my Assistant Manager a white Cis gendered woman who always found time to come find me to ask me what I was doing on the sales floor to clock my every move but never could seem to finish the things she needed to.
Tips for others struggling in these hard times:
  1. Remind yourself daily that before you fell to this state of despair there was life of peace, happiness and success. Get back there you deserve it.
  2. People can judge and assume whatever they want but there are also those waiting to hear your story and desire nothing more than to help you back up.
  3. Everything isn’t as bad as it seems but losing stability can and will rock your world and shift everything in your life including your worldview, level of trust in people and overall joy and satisfaction.
  4. If the conditions negatively impact your ability to move forward get out and far away as the saying goes “misery loves company” and there are people who are don’t give a fuck whether you make it or not.
  5. If you are alone in your journey but are a person of faith. Pray often and speak to God about every situation and challenge you face. Tell him what you’re willing to do in order to meet him half way to change to overall outcome. People are more like to help those who show an intrinsic motivation and desire to help themselves first that includes the Holy Spirit.
  6. Think out loud but speak internally only about the true matters of your situation. Everyone does need to know your business you deserve to have autonomy (choice) and confidentiality (privacy) honored on your behalf as well.
  7. Play into the statistical significance of the stereotype for which society has set and don’t break character even when things are improving behind the scenes. Play on the deception that people are working hard to hold against you. Once the old you has been dismantled you can now walk about in your new life leaving everything behind that was attached to your past (friends, family, habits etc). You are greater than your circumstances and bigger than the enemy who creates them.
You will win again!

2024.06.08 21:57 Johnny_Ringo27 Dvoeverie, Faith, and Slavic Identity

I have spent the last 15 years of my life searching for my heritage and identity, and it's only now in my 30s that I'm finally figuring things out. I was a pagan as a teenager, and it was very formative for me. I walked away from my family's adoption of christianity (I refuse to capitalize the word because of a fair bit of childhood religious trauma) when I was 13, and never went back. In my 20s, I was unsure of what to believe, and went atheist for about a decade afterward, which is around the time I started searching through family documents, my grandmother's stories, and ancestry.com. Now that I'm in my 30s, I feel some feeling, a desire to honor my blood and heritage.
I learned through my research that my father's side, the side I never knew much about, is Polish, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Russian, Czech, Croatian, Uzbek, and a little bit of Italian. My father's side were almost entirely Slavic Jews and Romani (Gypsies, although I understand that to be a racist term, I'm sorry for that, it is unfortunately also the most widespread word by which everybody knows Romani people). Since discovering this information, I've been on a kick to understand as much about Slavs, Romani, and Jewish people that I can find. I'm 35 now, and some part of me is telling me that it's a little odd for a man in his 30s to be searching for himself, but I have to make effort to tell myself that this is OK for me to do. I started learning Polish on Duolingo. 142 days straight, and I'm getting able to speak Polish in small sentences.
Through my past with paganism, I eventually came across Rodnovery. It seems interesting, it feels like something I could get into. The only thing that worries me is, given that traditionalist reconstruction religions are hearkening back to an older, pre-christian time, they tend to be politically and socially reactionary. They value their old ways, which generally tends to mean traditionalism taken very seriously. Some have an interest in "going back to the old ways", but they take it too far. I've been told that Rodnovery is very traditionalist in its social politics, I've been told it's patriarchal, anti-LGBT, and just right wing traditionalist and theocratic in general. I'm a white guy in America, but I have no interest in tradition for tradition's sake. For any religion I consider practicing, I am not OK with anti-LGBT bigotry. I'm anti-racist, I'm a very liberal man. Theocracy is just not gonna work for me.
I play tabletop role playing games with friends at a private club, and in a Scion game I'm currently in, I'm playing a Polish-American trans woman who was resurrected by Marzanna, the winter death and rebirth goddess, and brought back from death. Claire's husband, Dean, was the original Scion of Marzanna (sort of like a demigod child), who traded his life to save Claire, who was dying of cancer. Now, resurrected, Claire is a psychopomp, she needs to guide the dead to the afterlife. She's been tasked by Marzanna, through the help of Baba Yaga, to find Koschei the Deathless, somewhere in the continental US, to convince him to accept death so that the line between life and death can be maintained. It's not really about finding and killing him, it's about the fact that Koschei is fighting the forces of nature, he is in his arrogance and refusal to change, resisting the course of the world and destiny. Koschei stole her husband's soul, and she wants it back. He needs to let go. His magical shenanigans were partially Baba Yaga's fault, so Baba Yaga is being forced by Marzanna to play by the rules for once. I'm enjoying playing this game, because it's making me feel more in touch with my Slavic roots.
I came across, through the game and through the basics of Rodnovery, the concept of Dvoeverie, the syncretic concept of "dual faith" which marks Rodnovery unique as far as I can tell. Despite wanting to be a reconstruction of traditional, pre-christian beliefs, historians and anthropologists agree that Rodnovery has been inexorably changed by christianity. It has left a mark on Poland, and other Slavic nations, undoubtedly. The idea of dvoeverie, as far as I can understand, is about holding two contradictory ideas in the mind and heart at the same time. It's apparently about embracing the contradictions between the two ideas and being OK with that. Syncretic religions benefit from ideas like dvoeverie. And as I feel drawn to different faiths at the same time, I believe that I am experiencing dvoeverie in my life.
On the one hand, I want to be pagan, I want to revel in nature. I want to perform the old ways, carve wood with runes and symbols, make tools, dance, hunt animals, and perform rituals. I want to do as my ancestors did. I despise christianity and I want nothing to do with that, but Judaism is different. In the more liberal wings of Judaism, they don't even care if you don't believe in a god, you're supposed to question and debate it. You're supposed to be unsure, that's OK. And I can't describe how refreshing that is, and how much that relieves my anxiety about struggling with faith, deities, and who I am. Because I also want to be Jewish, because that's the faith my family had, that's why they fled the nazis and went to America. I want to understand that faith, why it was important to my great-grandparents and their ancestors. I'm only a third generation American.
It's not all wine and roses, however, unfortunately. Intellectually, I understand that I'm spending a lot of time thinking about my heritage, my blood, who my people are, and I have the best of intentions with that. But I also have to question how far it goes, because I have to recognize that this is getting a little bit into the "blood and soil" racist crowd, and that's absolutely not my deal. I do not have any respect for that kind of thing, it's racist and bad, and I do not want any of that in my life. So I need to understand more about what Slavs believe, because I don't know enough about Rodnovery to fully understand it yet. Is it as traditionalist, patriarchal, and anti-LGBT as I've heard? Is there a place for a left wing, LGBT man like myself in Rodnovery?

2024.06.08 21:14 kabuto_mushi Spicy take... The Chronicles games just did not do it for me in the same way as the mainline series?

Anybody who loves these games, please don't let me yuck your yum or whatever, I just gotta speak my truth. Spoilers.
I LOVE the original Phoenix Wright series. I know they were created a long time ago, but there's something special to me about that late 90's Japan, Detective Conan flavor murder mystery in the suburbs that scratches a deep nostalgic itch for me. I don't know what it is, but the setting, the sheer ridiculous nature of the characters, is so good. I've played and replayed the original three games like a confort show a zillion times, as I'm sure have many of you in this sub. That said, I never found my footing in this side story. I just finished the second game today.
A few things that I felt bothered me all the way through:
That's it, I just had to get it out of my system. Honestly, the only game I haven't played now is Spirit of Justice, and I'm really nervous about it. I hope I'm able to enjoy it just like I did they older mainline games...

Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Ang Lee's turn.
Lee's father, a respect principal, was hoping that his son would become a professor. But he was disappointed when his son failed his high school exam twice, forcing him to attend a less privileged university. Seeing Ingmar Bergman's film The Virgin Spring was a formative experience for him. After finishing his mandatory military service, he moved to the United States to complete his studies. He wanted to become an actor, but his struggle with English made him move into directing. After finally meeting a few contacts in the industry, he started working as a director.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

Pushing Hands (1991)

His directorial debut. It stars Sihung Lung, Lai Wang, Bo Z. Wang, Deb Snyder and Haan Lee. It follows a Chinese tai chi master living in New York, who struggles to find his place in the world. The film shows the contrast between traditional Chinese ideas of Confucian relationships within a family and the much more informal Western emphasis on the individual.
Lee graduated from New York University Tisch School of the Arts in 1984, but had failed to find career opportunities since, working almost full-time as a house-father. During the intermediate six years, he became interested in martial arts, specifically tai chi, after reading the wuxia novel Jianghu qixia zhuan. This motivated him to write a screenplay, which brought the attention of Hsu Li-kong, a recently promoted senior manager in a major studio who had a strong interest in Lee's unique style and freshness. He invited Lee to make his directorial debut.
It had a very limited release, and it was reported that it made just $152,322 domestically. But it received acclaim in the United States and Taiwan. And that allowed Lee to finally get a chance to expand his horizon.

  • Domestic gross: $152,322.
  • Worldwide gross: $152,322.

The Wedding Banquet (2023)

"You are cordially invited to a wedding where everybody wants to kiss the bride... except the groom."
His second film. The film stars Gua Ah-leh, Lung Sihung, May Chin, Winston Chao and Mitchell Lichtenstein. The story concerns a bisexual Taiwanese immigrant man who marries a mainland Chinese woman to placate his parents and get her a green card. His plan backfires when his parents arrive in the United States to plan his wedding banquet and he has to hide the truth of his gay partner.
Neil Peng approached Lee with the idea in 1986 by revealing to Lee that one of their mutual friends had moved to the United States and was in a same-sex relationship without the knowledge of the man's parents. Lee and Peng began writing the screenplay two years later and were soon joined by James Schamus. Schamus wrote that the film was "first drafted in Chinese, then translated into English, re-written in English, translated back into Chinese, and eventually subtitled in Chinese and English and a dozen other languages."
The film was critically acclaimed, and became a sleeper hit, earning $23.6 million against a budget of just $1 million. Lee was on the rise.
  • Budget: $1,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $6,933,459.
  • Worldwide gross: $23,633,459.

Eat Drink Man Woman (1994)

"It's hard to tell where sex stops and food begins."
His third film. It stars Sihung Lung, Wang Yu-wen, Wu Chien-lien, and Yang Kuei-mei. It follows four members of the Zhu family as they navigate the challenges of love, life, tradition and family. This film deals with the transition from tradition to modernity. It is Lee's first (and to date, only film) to be shot entirely in his native Taiwan.
Like his previous films, another critical and commercial success. Lee quickly made himself a household name.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $7,294,403.
  • Worldwide gross: $24,294,403.

Sense and Sensibility (1995)

"Lose your heart and come to your senses."
His fourth film. Based on the novel by Jane Austen, and it stars Emma Thompson (who also wrote the screenplay), Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman. The story follows the Dashwood sisters, members of a wealthy English family of landed gentry, as they must deal with circumstances of sudden destitution. They are forced to seek financial security through marriage.
In 1989, producer Lindsay Doran suggested adapting the novel to her colleagues. She was a lifelong fan of the novel, and vowed to make a film adaptation if she ever made it into the industry. Looking for a writer, Doran read screenplays by English and American writers until she came across a series of comedic skits, often in period settings, that actress Emma Thompson had written and decided that that was the direction she wanted for the film. As they were working on the film Dead Again, Doran hired Thompson to write the film, even though she never wrote a feature-length film before.
Thompson spent five years writing and revising the screenplay, both during and between shooting other films. Believing the novel's language to be "far more arcane than in [Austen's] later books," Thompson sought to simplify the dialogue while retaining the "elegance and wit of the original." Despite Doran's confidence, studios were reluctant to pick up the film, as Thompson never wrote a film. Columbia Pictures executive Amy Pascal supported Thompson's work and agreed to sign as the producer and distributor.
In 1993, Lee was hired to direct, basically for his work in The Wedding Banquet. Even though he was not familiar with Jane Austen, Doran felt that Lee's films, which depicted complex family relationships amidst a social comedy context, were a good fit with Austen's storylines. Viewing it as a "director for hire" job, Lee spent six months in preparing for the film, as it would have his largest budget ($16 million) by that point. Doran and Columbia asked Thompson to play Elinor herself.
The film received widespread critical acclaim, and was included on more than a hundred top-ten of the year lists, as well as one of the best Austen adaptations. It was a huge box office hit, earning $134 million worldwide. It received 7 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress. Thompson won Best Adapted Screenplay, making her the only person to have won an Oscar for both her writing and acting (she won Best Actress two years prior). However, Lee was not nominated for Best Director, a decision that was criticized by many as Hollywood's racism against Lee and Chinese cinema in general. Lee sought to avoid turning his omission into a scandal and specifically asked the Taiwan state media not to make it a "national issue", explaining that he endured more pressure when forced to act as his country's representative.
  • Budget: $16,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $43,182,776.
  • Worldwide gross: $134,582,776.

The Ice Storm (1997)

"The American Dream was over. But the hangover was just beginning."
His fifth film. Based on the novel by Rick Moody, it stars Kevin Kline, Joan Allen, Tobey Maguire, Christina Ricci, Elijah Wood, Katie Holmes, Glenn Fitzgerald, Jamey Sheridan and Sigourney Weaver. Set during Thanksgiving 1973, it follows two dysfunctional New Canaan, Connecticut, upper-class families who are trying to deal with tumultuous social changes of the early 1970s, and their escapism through alcohol, adultery and sexual experimentation.
The film ended Lee's winning streak at the box office, but it was still critically acclaimed.
  • Budget: $18,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $8,038,061.
  • Worldwide gross: $16,011,975.

Ride with the Devil (1999)

"In a no-man's land between North and South, you didn't fight for the blue or grey, you fought for your friends and your family."
His sixth film. Based on the novel Woe to Live On by Daniel Woodrell, it stars Tobey Maguire, Skeet Ulrich, Jeffrey Wright, Jewel, Simon Baker, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, James Caviezel, Thomas Guiry and Jonathan Brandis. Set during the American Civil War, it follows a group of men who join the First Missouri Irregulars, also known as the Bushwhackers — guerrilla units loyal to pro-Confederacy units of the state — and their war against Northern Jayhawkers allied with the Union army.
Despite commanding a $38 million budget, the film had a very limited three-day run, making less than $1 million. It also received mixed reviews from critics.
  • Budget: $38,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $635,096.
  • Worldwide gross: $635,096.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

"A timeless story of strength, secrets, and two warriors who would never surrender."
His seventh film. Based on the Chinese novel serialized between 1941 and 1942 by Wang Dulu, it stars Chow Yun-fat, Michelle Yeoh, Zhang Ziyi, and Chang Chen. Master Li Mu Bai, a warrior, is about to retire and gives his sword to his lover Yu Shu Lien to keep it safe. However, the sword is stolen and now an embittered Li embarks on a mission to find it.
The stunt work was mostly performed by the actors themselves and Ang Lee stated in an interview that computers were used "only to remove the safety wires that held the actors" aloft. "Most of the time you can see their faces," he added. "That's really them in the trees." The film specifically targeted Western audiences rather than the domestic audiences who were already used to Wuxia films. As a result, high-quality English subtitles were needed. Ang Lee, who was educated in the West, personally edited the subtitles to ensure they were satisfactory for Western audiences.
Whatever were the expectations for this, the film exceeded them by a large margin. After a limited release, it earned $8 million in its first wide domestic opening weekend. But the crazy thing was how insane were its legs; it didn't hit a sub $4 million weekend until its 12th wide weekend, and it even increased from some weekends. It closed with a colossal $128 million domestically, becoming the highest foreign-language film in United States, a record it still keeps, and it's twice as much as the second place, Life Is Beautiful. Worldwide, it earned $213.9 million worldwide, becoming a worldwide phenomenon and Lee's highest grossing film.
The film was widely acclaimed across the world, hailed as one of the greatest films of the century. The film led to a boost in popularity of Chinese wuxia films in the Western world, where they were previously little known, and led to films such as Hero and House of Flying Daggers, both directed by Zhang Yimou, being marketed towards Western audiences. It received 10 Oscar nominations (the most for a foreign film), including Best Picture and Best Director for Lee. It won four: Best Foreign Language Film, Best Art Direction, Best Original Score, and Best Cinematography. To this day, one of the most iconic foreign titles. Lee made history.
  • Budget: $17,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $128,530,421.
  • Worldwide gross: $213,978,518.

Hulk (2003)

"Unleash the fury."
His eighth film. Based on the Marvel Comics character created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, it stars Eric Bana, Jennifer Connelly, Sam Elliott, Josh Lucas, and Nick Nolte. The film explores Bruce Banner's origins. After a lab accident involving gamma radiation, he transforms into a giant green-skinned humanoid with superhuman strength known as the Hulk whenever stressed or emotionally provoked. The United States military pursues him, and he clashes with his biological father, who has dark plans for his son.
Since 1990, Avi Arad and Gale Ann Hurd were working on a Hulk film, but Universal was struggling in finding the right script. Hurd brought her husband Jonathan Hensleigh as co-producer the following year, and Universal hired Industrial Light & Magic to create the Hulk with computer-generated imagery. Joe Johnston was hired as director, but he eventually left to work on another film, while Zak Penn was brought to rewrite. Hensleigh subsequently rewrote the script with J. J. Abrams. Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski were also brought on board to rewrite, with Hensleigh deciding to direct the film himself despite not having directed before. By 1998, Universal put the film on hiatus due to its escalating $100 million budget and worries of Hensleigh directing his first film. $20 million was already spent on script development, computer animation, and prosthetics work. Hensleigh immediately went to rewrite the script to reduce the budget.
In 2001, Lee and his colleague James Schamus signed for the project, after Lee chose not to direct Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. He was dissatisfied with the script and commissioned Schamus for a rewrite, merging Banner's father with the Absorbing Man. Lee cited influences from King Kong, Frankenstein, Jekyll and Hyde, Beauty and the Beast, Faust, and Greek mythology to interpret the story. Schamus said he had found the storyline that introduced Brian Banner, allowing Lee to write a drama that again explored father-son themes. Schamus admitted to feeling pressure after the release of Spider-Man.
Eric Bana commented that the shoot was "Ridiculously serious... a silent set, morbid in a lot of ways." Lee told him that he was shooting a Greek tragedy, and that he would be making a "whole other movie" about the Hulk at Industrial Light & Magic. An example of Lee's arthouse approach to the film was taking Bana to watch a bare-knuckle boxing match. Bana would later disfavorably reflect on his experience making the film as the majority of the time he was working indoors while the rest of the cast interacted with a CGI recreation of the Hulk, somewhat limiting his screen time.
After the colossal success of Spider-Man, Universal mounted an extensive marketing campaign, which also highlighted Ang Lee's involvement. The film opened with a huge $62.1 million in its first weekend, the biggest June debut and the 16th biggest ever. However, the film had absolutely no legs at the box office. In its second weekend, it dropped a colossal 69.7%, which was the biggest for a film that opened above $20 million. In its third weekend, it fell another steep 56.3% and it kept falling until it left theaters, becoming the largest opener not to earn $150 million. It closed with $132 million domestically and $245 million worldwide. Good enough to be the 15th highest grossing film of the year and Lee's highest grossing film, but not a hit given its $137 million budget.
If Spider-Man was an immediate crowd-pleaser, Hulk was the exact opposite. It received polarizing reviews; while its ambition and style was praised, a lot criticized its CGI and very limited action ("too much talking and not enough smashing"). In subsequent years, some have praised the film as an ambitious film that deviated from the superhero formula, although it's still not widely considered as a beloved film. Lee admitted the challenges of the film, but stood proud of the film and its fans.
  • Budget: $137,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $132,177,234.
  • Worldwide gross: $245,285,165.

Brokeback Mountain (2005)

"Love is a force of nature."
His ninth film. Based on the short story by Annie Proulx, it stars Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams and Randy Quaid. Its plot depicts the complex romantic relationship between two American cowboys, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, in the American West from 1963 to 1983.
Screenwriter Diana Ossana discovered Annie Proulx's short story in October 1997, just days after its publication. She convinced writing partner Larry McMurtry to read it, who thought it was a "masterpiece". The pair asked Proulx if they could adapt it into a film screenplay; although she did not think that the story would work as a film, she agreed. The big challenge wasn't the script, it was about getting the film made in the first place.
Gus Van Sant attempted to make the film, hoping to cast Matt Damon and Joaquin Phoenix as Ennis and Jack, respectively. He also considered Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Ryan Phillippe and Josh Hartnett. Damon, who previously worked with Van Sant on Good Will Hunting, told the director, "Gus, I did a gay movie (The Talented Mr. Ripley), then a cowboy movie (All the Pretty Horses). I can't follow it up with a gay-cowboy movie!"
James Schamus, who was now the CEO of Focus Features, optioned the film rights in 2001. Pedro Almodovar was approached, but he felt he couldn't get his artistic freedom respected. At Ossana's request, Schamus showed the story and screenplay to Lee. Lee decided instead to make Hulk, and that film's experience left him exhausted, to the point that he considered retiring. When he was offered Brokeback, he changed his mind and agreed to direct. He was particularly drawn to the authentic rural American life and repression depicted in the story.
Ossana and McMurty suggested Heath Ledger, but the film studio thought he was not masculine enough. Regardless, Ledger got the script, who thought it was "beautiful" and put himself forward. Gyllenhaal reacted to the script positively and signed on for the role; he also did not want to miss the opportunity working with Lee and friend Ledger. Lee met with Mark Wahlberg for a role in the film, but Wahlberg declined as he was "creeped out" by the script. Gyllenhaal admired Ledger and described him as "way beyond his years as a human". Other actors were considered for the leads but Lee said they were too afraid to take on the roles.
You have to consider that while the world progressed a lot in the past years, 2005 was a very different era, so a film like Brokeback Mountain had a tough hill to climb. Some countries refused to play the film, while others censored it. LGBT films weren't big at the time, so it felt like there wouldn't be a big audience here.
And they were proven wrong.
The film debuted with $547,425 in 5 theaters, a huge $109,485 per-theater average. It had fantastic legs, eventually closing with a huge $83 million domestically. But the big surprise is that it was bigger overseas; it made $178 million worldwide, becoming Focus Features' highest grossing film. The film received universal acclaim on its release, touted as one of the greatest films of the century. It received 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. It won three: Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Original Score. In a shocking decision, it lost Best Picture to Crash, a decision that has been reviled ever since. We'd like to say it's a polarizing decision... but let's face it, there are no Crash fans nowadays. Or at least, none that prefer that to Brokeback.
But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter; Brokeback may not have won the Oscar, but it won over the general public.
It wasn't the first LGBT film, not even close. But it might have been the most influential and a huge landmark.
  • Budget: $14,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $83,043,761.
  • Worldwide gross: $178,064,141.

Lust, Caution (2007)

"The trap is set."
His tenth film. Based on the novella by Eileen Chang, it stars Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Tang Wei, Anupam Kher, Joan Chen, Wang Leehom and Shyam Pathak. The film is set in Hong Kong in 1938 and in Shanghai in 1942, when the city was occupied by the Imperial Japanese Army and ruled by the puppet government led by Wang Jingwei. The film depicts a group of Chinese university students from The University of Hong Kong who plot to assassinate a high-ranking special agent and recruiter working for the puppet government by luring him into a honey trap.
The actors who played university classmates, spent six months of preproduction in Hong Kong just to get into character and understand the period before filming. During this period the group of actors, including Tang Wei and Wang Leehom became very close friends. Both Tang Wei and Tony Leung Chiu-wai were asked whether the sex scenes in the movie were unsimulated. Tang Wei responded, "In the movie, we are just doing what we should do to have a baby." As for Tony Leung, he responded, "When the bodies collide with each other, it is indeed like a fake show!" The film was rated NC-17 in North America for its explicit sex scenes, and Lee made it clear he would not re-cut the film. Despite that, the version released in China was cut by about seven minutes (by Lee himself) to make it suitable for younger audiences, since China has no rating system.
The film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, where it received critical acclaim. Due to the rating, it only earned $4 million domestically. But it was much bigger overseas, where it earned $67 million worldwide, becoming the highest grossing NC-17 film (a record it still keeps).
  • Budget: $15,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $4,604,982.
  • Worldwide gross: $67,091,915.

Taking Woodstock (2009)

"Take the trip."
His 11th film. Based on the memoir by Elliot Tiber and Tom Monte, it stars Demetri Martin, Paul Dano, Dan Fogler, Henry Goodman, Jonathan Groff, Emile Hirsch, Eugene Levy, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Imelda Staunton and Liev Schreiber. Elliot's parents own a motel in Catskills, New York. To overcome the family's financial crisis, Elliot offers the organisers of the Woodstock music and art festival boarding and lodging in the motel.
The film received mixed reviews, and bombed at the box office.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $7,460,204.
  • Worldwide gross: $9,975,737.

Life of Pi (2012)

"Don't lose hope."
His 12th film. Based on the novel by Yann Martel, it stars Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Rafe Spall, Gérard Depardieu and Adil Hussain. The storyline revolves around two survivors of a shipwreck who are on a lifeboat stranded in the Pacific Ocean for 227 days. One is a sixteen-year-old Indian boy named Pi Patel and the other is a ferocious Bengal tiger named Richard Parker.
Fox 2000 Pictures executive Elizabeth Gabler acquired the film rights in February 2003. M. Night Shyamalan was attached to direct, and he was expected to film it after The Village. But he dropped to instead make Lady in the Water, "I was hesitant [to direct] because the book has kind of a twist ending. And I was concerned that as soon as you put my name on it, everybody would have a different experience." Other directors considered were Alfonso Cuarón and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, both of which declined.
In 2009, Lee was hired, but the film was stuck in development hell when he asked for a $120 million budget. But the revival of 3-D motivated Fox in greenlighting the film under Lee's terms. As Lee started casting, one of the actors involved was Tobey Maguire, who would play a reporter. But it was later reported that Lee chose to cut his scenes, feeling he wanted to emphasize an entirely international cast. His scenes were re-shot with Rafe Spall.
Fox mounted an extensive marketing campaign selling the film as "the next Avatar" in terms of visuals and 3-D. And it fucking killed it at the box office. It earned $124.9 million domestically, which was considered a soft performance. But the real money was in the rest of the world; the film broke records in countries like China, United Kingdom, India and Mexico. It earned a colossal $609 million worldwide, easily becoming Lee's highest grossing film. An absolutely insane performance.
The film also received critical acclaim, praised for its CGI and 3-D. It received 11 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. And it won four: Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Original Score, and then Lee himself won his second Oscar for Best Director, becoming the first Asian to win the award twice. And just like that, he cemented himself as one of the greatest filmmakers of our era. And here's how he celebrated it; going to In-N-Out.
  • Budget: $120,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $124,987,023.
  • Worldwide gross: $609,016,565.

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (2016)

"To walk the path of a hero, you have to see how it all began."
His 13th film. Based on the novel by Ben Fountain, it stars Joe Alwyn, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Vin Diesel, Steve Martin, and Chris Tucker. After a horrifying battle in Iraq, Private Billy Lynn and his fellow comrades are brought home for a victory tour. Soon, he recollects the harsh realities of the war and struggles to cope with life.
The film used an unprecedented shooting and projection frame rate of 120 frames per second in 3D at 4K UHD resolution, which Lee terms the "whole shebang". It is the first feature film ever to be shot in such a high frame rate, over twice the previous record (Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, shot at 48 fps) and five times the standard speed of 24 fps. Lee undertook such a bold step after reading the book since he wanted the film to be an "immersive" and "realistic" experience of the reality and emotional journey of soldiers.
Due to the complexity involved in shooting at a very high frame rate, Lee could not afford to do many takes even for a single scene. Every shot was difficult and at the same time precious. He would rehearse every scene beforehand and would conduct regular morning meetings with the key crew members to highlight things they needed to be alert on. Shooting close-up shots in 3D with such high resolution meant the cast could not wear make-up and could not deliver less-than-authentic performances. Since no make-up was allowed, make-up artist Luisa Abel spent months of preparation on their skin tones. Throughout filming, the production team had to rethink everything, including different approaches to lighting as the camera needed extra lights due to the higher frame rates.
Due to the complexity of the film's unprecedented high frame rate and the cost of installing equipment capable of projecting the film in its intended format, only five theaters globally were equipped to show it at its highest resolution and maximum frame rate: two in the United States (one at a theater in New York City's AMC Lincoln Square where the film had its world premiere and the other in Los Angeles's the ArcLight Hollywood), and one theater each in Taipei, Beijing, and Shanghai.
The film opened in 2 theaters (New York City's AMC Lincoln Square and Los Angeles's the ArcLight Hollywood's Cinerama Dome), which were the only ones in the country to play the film at 120fps and the ticket prices at both locations running $20 or higher. It made a pretty great $114,129, which made for a fantastic $57,064 per-theater average (the third best of the year). But when it hit wide release, the film was dead on arrival. It made just $901,062 in 1,176 theaters, which was one of the worst wide debuts ever. And then, despite having its second weekend fall on Thanksgiving, it collapsed by 77.3%. It closed after just 3 weeks with only $1.7 million domestically. It fared better overseas, where China made colossal $23.7 million. Worldwide, it made just $30.9 million, making it a box office flop. Reviews were mixed, and people were polarized over the high-frame rate; some deemed it immersive and impressive, while others found it distracting and flat.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $1,738,477.
  • Worldwide gross: $30,930,984.

Gemini Man (2019)

"Who will save you from yourself?"
His 14th film. It stars Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen and Benedict Wong. The film follows a retiring Force Recon Marine scout sniper who is targeted by a much younger clone of himself while on the run from a corrupt private military company.
In 1997, Darren Lemke sold his pitch for Gemini Man after impressing Don Murphy with an unproduced spec script. Warner Bros. Pictures pursued the project, but Walt Disney Pictures ultimately won out and Tony Scott would become attached to direct. Complications soon arose when the studio were planning how to make the film. The producers toyed with the idea of an actor play both roles through the use of visual effects, but Scott moved on from the film before any progress could be made.
The project was stuck in development hell, and saw many actors considered, such as Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Chris O'Donnell, Nicolas Cage, Sean Connery, Clint Eastwood and Jon Voight. Many directors were also considered, before Lee finally signed in 2017, with Smith also joining. Like his previous film, the film was shot digitally at an extra-high frame rate of 120 frames per second (fps), modified for 3D, this time on modified ARRI Alexa cameras mounted on STEREOTEC 3D Rigs.
Again, due to the requirements needed, only 14 theaters in North America could show the film at a 120fps 2K 3D high-frame rate (two in Los Angeles, two in Chicago, and one each in Miami, Orlando, New Orleans, Denver, New York, San Francisco, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Baltimore and Houston). Even then, the film was shot at 120fps 4K 3D, which means no theater showed its intended vision. Lee said that 120fps 2K 3D felt like the necessary avenue to make “Junior,” Smith’s digital avatar, a soulful character who could also appear to beat the living crap out of a real actor in the film’s many fight sequences.
The film received negative reviews, particularly for its CGI and story. And like his previous film, the high-frame rate received polarizing reactions. Despite the presence of a big star like Will Smith, the film flopped with just $173 million worldwide, against its $138 million budget, and losing an estimated $111 million for Paramount. Lee's attempt at high-frame rate was just not clicking with the public.
  • Budget: $138,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $48,546,770.
  • Worldwide gross: $173,469,516.

The Future

His next film, as confirmed in November 2022, is a Bruce Lee biopic. The lead actor will be Mason Lee, Ang's son. And he suggested he's not done with the 120fps high-frame rate, claiming he would continue using it in his next film for action sequences.

The Verdict

Despite his past two films getting two of the worst reviews in his career, Lee has proved himself to be a very reliable director.
Something impressive about him is the versatility in his resume. A comic book film, a survival film, a LGBT film, a wuxia film, a sci-fi film, a post-war film, a Jane Austen film, a noir film, an erotic NC-17 thriller, a Western, and some romantic comedies. Even if some don't fully work, there's still some good and interesting aspects in him. And of course, the first Asian director to win 2 Oscars for Best Director. So if he wants to continue with the controversial 120fps high-frame rate, let him cook. Hopefully in more and more theaters worldwide.
Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Zack Snyder. Oh boy. This is where the fun begins.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. Well, we'll later talk about... John McTiernan and Rob Reiner. Whaaaaat? Two posts for the price of one? You're welcome! It was a very tight race, and it was tough to choose one or the other. The former has the dishonor of going to director jail and real jail, while the latter had an incredible run before completely crashing with one of Roger Ebert's most hated films.
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
June 10-16 Zack Snyder RIP Inbox.
June 17-23 Tony Scott Action films have not been the same ever since his death.
June 24-30 Roland Emmerich The King of disaster films.
July 1-7 John McTiernan & Rob Reiner The rise and fall of two once-great directors.
Who should be next after McTiernan and Reiner? That's up to you.

2024.06.08 20:56 Heathermarie923 Episode with woman in wooded area

In a pre 2012 episode I remember seeing a very interesting episode where a woman was killed in a secluded wooded area, and it showed her dead hand. It was a bluish color and they showed it multiple times. That's pretty much all I remember. Anyone know that episode?

2024.06.08 20:36 Luxu_Reel Not Sure How I (26M) Should To Deal With My Girlfriend (29F)?

My background:
-25M Korean.
-Had parents who were very controlling and didn't want to respect me as an individual but to think like them growing up.
-Very free and understanding mindset.
-Don’t want to get married for the sake of getting married like everyone else. But I would consider if I see the future with my partner and be able to roadmap our kids instead of having children without any plans.
-Hate people who get emotional and blame me without reasoning.
emotional
My Girlfriend's background:
-29F Japanese.
-Didn't have a father growing up and currently has a narcissistic mother who tries to guilt trip her to have control over her.
-Strict and conservative dating mindset.
-Got cheated on by her previous boyfriend so she has trust issues and compares me to her previous boyfriends.
-Can't have control over her emotions which makes her mindset negative often even though I try to support her.
-Doesn’t like to be looked down on even if she may be doing something wrong.
-She wants to get married as soon as possible because she wants a family and a baby like everyone else. But she’s willing to wait.
-She quit her stable job in Japan to get a job (without a clear plan) only to go back home, doing a part-time job.
How we started dating:
We met on a dating app and didn't click first because I was very straightforward/affectionate. I’m usually very flirty even on first dates, like holding hands, telling her I like her, and even making out if the situation calls for it (With asking their permission of course.) So her first impression of me was, that I was some playboy who slept with a lot of women previously. I learned my lesson to respect and be more mindful but since all my previous relationships loved that behavior, it came off naturally.
But after a month, we started dating officially and almost living together at her place because she liked how I was kind and caring about her. I liked her with the same reasons and for her innocent-like personality. We’re currently doing a long-distance relationship since she went back to Japan. Everything was going well for us and we made great memories except..
Fight #1 - Jumps Into Conclusion
Example:
-She got mad at me because didn’t pay for our first date, and she thought I didn’t care about her. This was solved by telling her about my financial situation and she was understanding after that.
-Like her talking about getting angry at her ex because he didn’t pay for everything on a special day like Christmas (Which is valid but she spoke like she’s entitled and it’s an obvious gesture)
-She gets negatively emotional without confirming or checking the meaning behind what I say or do (Mostly due to the cultural/language barrier.)
-She tries to test me from time to time thinking I might be cheating on her. So she gets extremely defensive asking questions about everything especially if my friends are girls.
Fight #2 - Narcissistic
Example:
-She’s sensitive when it comes to paying back or strictly saving food at home.
-She got mad because my credit card (American Express) was declined multiple times so I had to ask her to pay for me until I paid her back. But she was super sensitive and gave me silent treatment for days. This was solved by my apologizing and explaining it wasn’t intentional after she cooled down.
-But when I paid for her she thanked me at that time but forgets later if she’s at a disadvantage like her having to pay me/borrowing money.
-Tries to give up on the relationship (or anything generally) if the argument goes too long or she can’t agree she’s wrong.
-After confronting her, if she can check up with me with the meaning behind what I say before jumping to a conclusion, she tells me to stop trying to control her because that’s who she is.
-When we were arguing once, I pointed out everything negative about her and suggested perhaps thinking about me before getting emotional. She couldn’t take the criticism and she said, “It feels like I’m the only one wrong here and feels like it’s unfair to me.” without any explanation behind that.
-“I’m older than you therefore I’m probably more mature than you.” Asian cultural mindset.
-She’s dead honest if she doesn’t care about the topic and shows disinterest but if I do that, she gets sad and thinks I don’t care about her.
Fight #3 - Unable To Sympathize Something Opposite From Her Personality
Example:
-She got mad because I didn’t have the same level of love she has for children.
-She directly talks openly about her feelings right away without thinking what I might be feel. But cries or get hurt if I do the same.
The easiest route would be breaking up with her from how many things I listed here. But this happens occasionally and her positives outweigh the negatives. I truly love her and never had a good partner previously who actually wanted me to be happy. But when this happens, it’s just frustrating because it usually happens from language misunderstandings and from her getting emotional suddenly without thinking it through. Obviously, I don’t want to have control over her, but my hope is for her to learn to be more mature and not date a toddler but a grown woman.
Anyway, if you had any similar experiences or have any advice mostly on how to confront her, I would really appreciate it. Thank you!
TL;DR
My GF gets negatively emotional suddenly by misunderstanding me. Her reasoning doesn’t match up with the complaints she has about me (Because she’s also like that.)

2024.06.08 19:46 MoeDantes I had some Detective Conan dreams last night, they both had a theme of "alternate versions of the first episode"

So this is like the third and fourth time in history I've had Conan dreams--last year I had one that I posted on this forum, and sometime later I had a dream involving an animated American-made spinoff about Conan and Heiji solving mysteries in America.
This morning's dreams, like the title says, both involved me finding and watching an alternate version of the first episode.
The first version involved Shinichi and Ran travelling along this long road when they read a small shop, it kinda just looks like somebody's house on the inside but its apparently a candy shop, but that's also apparently a front for some crooks.
In-dream, me and a friend were watching and kinda chuckling because not only was this an alternate episode, it was also an alternate english dub--Ran sounded like she was voiced by a Japanese woman with a thick accent.
It was after going to sleep in this candy shop that Shinichi awoke as Conan, but he still remembered the shop's address and was able to search it up on his phone. I guess he wasn't too worried about Ran--he was kinda Conan-confident. He also somehow already had his skateboard.
Something odd happened here too, where it began the next episode preview revealing in the next episode we'd get an alternate origin for his stretchy suspender things--here he met a kid (who looked like Joey from the 1980s Dennis the Menace cartoon) using similar devices to bungie jump off a bridge, and he got them from a different scientist (bald, round head, big nose... basically imagine someone whose head is a Mr. Saturn) who was a rival of Agasa, and then Agasa's version is an improved design.
In dream I was like "wait, is the episode over already?" but it turned out no, just for some stupid reason this version was showing the preview at the commercial break. Also I noticed Haibara briefly in a flyover shot.
So then the next version of the alternate first ep starts.
This goes back to the premise of a murder taking place at an amusement park. However, Shinichi is Conan. In order to get better light on the place where the body is, he climbs up a thing and turns on a bunch of spotlights before Ran comes to stop him. For some reason for this scene he looks like Woody Woodpecker (because I have no idea what's going on in my head).
Kogoro also actually shows up on the scene but doesn't do anything. There's also actually two investigators: Megure is made more clownish-looking (he sort of looks like Wimpy from Popeye), but there's another more serious inspector, who seems to immediately recognize that Conan is smarter than he looks. This one kinda looks like Mr Grossburg from Ace Attorney, and has a really kind and gentle demeanor about him.
Another oddity... in this version, Conan will sometimes just randomly be Shinichi again, as he was in the next scene... where he and the Grossburg character were hyper-speed scooting on their backs on a sandy part of the park, which the dude thought was relaxing but Shinichi didn't, because they were being chased by giant snakes that would jump out of the sand. This was in service to getting to a scene of evidence.
After this, Conan left the park and investigated a nearby... beach? river? lake? It seemed to be along the same road as the candy shop from earlier so I'm not sure what kind of connection my dream was trying to make.
...............................
Waking up, my main thought is... "eh, might be a jumping off point for a fanfic. Like what if there really was a 'lost Conan episode'? What would it be like?"
Weirdly enough, the Black Organization never shows up. And again, in the second dream, Conan would sometimes just be Shinichi again. I'm not sure if that was just dreams being inconsistent or meant to imply that APTX was unstable.
So... am I the only one who ever has Conan dreams? For me they happen rarely, and usually in times where I have not been watching the show.

2024.06.08 19:17 No_Bit1923 A bruxa

When I moved to the small town of Blair in Maryland, I heard several strange stories, but none intrigued me as much as the legend of the Blair Witch. The locals spoke of her with a mixture of fear and reverence, and her name was whispered as if mere mention could summon her.
According to the legend, Elly Kedward was a woman accused of witchcraft in 1785. It was said that she lured children to her house to extract their blood. When she was discovered, the residents tied her to a tree in the middle of the Black Hills forest and left her there to die of exposure. However, her body was never found. The following year, all of Elly's accusers and half of the town's children mysteriously disappeared. Terrified, the residents abandoned Blair, swearing never to speak Elly Kedward's name again.
One day, I decided to explore the Black Hills forest. Armed with a camera and a backpack, I entered the dense woods. The forest seemed too quiet, as if nature itself was afraid to make noise. After walking for a few hours, I came across a clearing with an old twisted tree that seemed to embody evil.
As I took photos, I noticed something strange in the camera's viewfinder: shadows moving between the trees, but when I looked directly, I saw nothing. I kept walking and noticed small straw talismans hanging from the branches in strange and disturbing shapes. The air grew cold, and a chill ran down my spine.
I began to hear soft yet clearly threatening whispers. I followed the sounds, thinking they were figments of my imagination, but soon found myself in front of an old wooden cabin, almost hidden by vegetation. The door was ajar, and an inexplicable force urged me to enter.
Inside, the cabin was in ruins, but the air was heavy and oppressive. There were strange symbols scratched on the walls, and the floor was covered with bones and feathers. In the back, there was a dark hole, almost like a cave. As I approached, a cold wind blew through the hole, extinguishing the light of my phone. Suddenly, I felt a presence behind me. I turned quickly but saw nothing, only heard a low, evil laugh.
I tried to run, but the door slammed shut with a deafening bang. The cabin was alive, and I was its prisoner. The whispers grew louder, turning into screams of agony and despair. I felt invisible hands grabbing me, pulling me towards the hole.

2024.06.08 18:55 KingdomOfNerdz [M4F] Eye of Oblivion (an Elder Scrolls roleplay)

Disclaimer: I am 18+ and all participants must be 18+. NO exceptions!
14 of Rain's Head, Year 159 5E
It has been long since the Last Dragonborn defeated Alduin. Skyrim and her people live without fear of the dragon menace, and any dragons that remain live in seclusion on top of the mountains. The worship of Talos had been legalized and Jarl Ulfric Stormcloak has long since joined the great feasting in Sovngarde, but the Stormcloaks still live on, with many still wearing their colors. The Empire has given up any hope of regaining Skyrim, though the Aldmeri Dominion still claim they will take the country back one day.
Windhelm is now being governed by Ulfric's descendant, Tarren Stormcloak. He governs the city with ideals not dislike his great ancestor, but for the sake of not being overthrown, he publicly displays more than just tolerance for those who aren't Nords. The Gray Quarters are more spacious now, and many families of Dunmer residing there. Tarren is viewed as a better Ulfric in many regards, though it is merely a facade.
Skyrim was finally at peace... for a time.
Tarren had just retired to his bed, exhausted from a long day in which he helped his people and hunted. With a quick clap of his hands, he summoned his chamber maid, a beautiful woman whom he did not know the race of. It mattered little to him, as he must show "love" to all the people of Skyrim, not just the Nords. He gently caressed her cheek as she came to bed with him, a loving gesture that one would expect from a husband to his wife, not a Jarl to his servant. In truth, he cared little for this woman, viewing her as little more than someone to have fun with. Of course, he knew better than to come out an say it.
He began to pull her in closer, intending to savor a kiss before indulging in love, when a scream could be heard from outside. Said scream was followed by several more, then the shattering of plates and breaking of wood. The young Jarl's concern grew, and he began to raise from the bed. "Stay here," he instructed as he left the bed to approach the door.
The young woman watched her Jarl from the bed, confusion and worry on her face. The anticipation grew with each passing second until the door itself jumped at him, nearly being broken open. Immediately, Tarren ran back to the bed, grabbing the chamber maid by the arm and pulling her off the bed. He hurriedly pushed her into the large closet and closed the door most of the way. "Stay in here," he commanded, looking into the woman's eyes through the cracked door, "and don't come out until I come for you!"
Just as the Jarl closed the door, the woman could hear the bedroom door burst open. "Foul creature!" Tarren growled as the unsheathing of a sword could be heard. "I'll send you back to Obliv-"
The Jarl's words were cut off, and all that could be heard was the sound of a blade gliding through flesh. A thud was next heard, along with footsteps, as the young woman cowered into the corner of the closet. What sounded like sniffing could be heard a moment later, then a voice spoke, but it was not Tarren Stormcloak. The voice sounded distorted, foreign, evil. "Another, in there," it said, getting closer with every syllable. The door began to creek open, and the young woman closed her eyes tight.
"FUS-RO-DAH!!!"
The ancient words of the dragon's tongue echoed in the bed slave's ears, followed by the sound of glass shattering and the yells of whatever spoke first. A mere moment later, the door swung open to show a different man with a broad chest, sword in hand. He was older than the Jarl, likely in his forties. His long blonde hair, which covered the left side of his face, had a few grey hair, and his crystal blue eye showed wisdom. His physique was more chiseled than the Jarl's as well, covered by a red shirt with chain mail underneath. His trousers were black, but spots of blood could easily be seen. On his feet were boots made of what seemed to be bones, and from displays she'd seen as a girl, the young woman could tell the bones were from a Dragon.
Without a word, the man grabbed her arm and pulled her to her feet, looking her in the eye with a look of intense focus and seriousness. "If you want to stay alive, woman, you'll stay close to me!"
 *
So that was a really long intro.
Hey! So, this is an idea I've had for about a month now, and I was originally just gonna make it a fanfiction or something, but I decided to make this a roleplay idea. As you may have guessed, this will be a Skyrim based roleplay, taking place long after the Last Dragonborn defeated Alduin. Many aspects of the world are the same, but with new people and much more danger. The basic gist is that Jyggalag, the Daedric Prince of Order and Logic, has regained much of his power and has decided to attempt to do what Molag Bal and Mehrunes Dagon failed to do: enter and take over Tamriel. And it is up to two heros to gain the Artifacts of the other Daedric Princes to stop him!
As you may have guessed, I'd like for your character to be a former chamber maid, or just a regular servant if you want, of the current Jarl of Windhelm. Her race, Backstory and powers are up to you. My character is a Nord who trained with the Grey Beards for twenty years to master the Way of the Voice. He's an excellent fighter and archer, but is hopeless in the fields of magic. We can discuss characters further in the DMs.
I usually roleplay on Kik, but for longer, more detailed plots like this, I prefer to use Discord. Feel free to message me on whichever you prefer.
Hope to hear from you soon.

2024.06.08 18:21 UrineOnConcrete [TOMT] [VIDEO] Unsettling bad 3d model of a woman dancing to a robotic song.

I've been looking for this video that I've seen before for years and I'm 99.99% it's real. I remember a few things about it, but I can't find it no matter how hard I try. I don't think it was too obscure when I saw it on YouTube.
The video wasn't meant to be scary I believe, but for some reason it provoked a deep sense of dread within me.
It was just a model of a bad 3d model of a woman dancing to a robotic song, I believe it was a Japanese song, it was creepy but seemed upbeat. I think she was dancing in some sort of garden. The woman spasmed and moved weirdly, and the brownish hair had weird physics that further made the scene more unrealistic.
It's a weird thing to want to look up, but I want to find it again. If anyone knows I'd be very happy to feel that dread again lol.

2024.06.08 18:05 Smooth_Bee_7482 Tsushima Shrine officially banned Korean tourists

https://www.tokyoweekender.com/japan-life/news-and-opinion/koreans-banned-from-entering-tsushima-shrine/
A picturesque island in Nagasaki Prefecture, Tsushima is a popular destination for tourists from South Korea as it is relatively nearby. One place on the island that Korean travelers won’t be allowed to visit from now on, though, is Watatsumi Shrine (also known as Watazumi Shrine). A sign at the entrance reads, “Koreans banned from entering,” written in Hangul. It’s a controversial measure that has been called discriminatory. However, the shrine, which has a history that dates back more than 1,000 years, felt it was necessary to combat ill-mannered visitors.
A priest at the shrine posted a video on X of a man smoking and littering in front of a torii gate. Both actions are prohibited on the premises. The priest said that he confirmed that the man was Korean, adding that “90% of foreigners who visit Tsushima are Korean.” He also posted videos of a woman uttering the word “jjokbari,” an ethnic slur against Japanese people, and tourists singing and dancing on the back approach to the shrine, pre-COVID. A restaurant owner nearby commented, “I understand the sentiment, but banning Koreans only feels a bit excessive.”

2024.06.08 18:02 NagiNaoe101 My daughter likes your pin and button can she have them?

Okay, I work as a door greeter at you know where lol. So I am used to compliments like, "I like your pins, where did you get them?" Some of these pins are from vacations, conventions I attended, and online.
I have this one lady (EM) who has a kid about 7 or 9 (EK) I don't really know. They always talk to me about one pin her child likes which is actually a button. It has a Griffin, a creature with the front half being an eagle and the other of a Lion. It's done by a friend of mine who does MLP style art so it looks kind of cute.
EK always loves it and talks about it, and hints she wants it. I told her my friend's website to comission one of her own, but EM kind of shuts it down with this kind of look.
Well yesterday EK and EM come in around 7pm and do their normal round of shopping. Usually normal banter, but EM suddenly just said, "My daughter really likes your button and one of your pins. Can you just let her have them?"
I am shocked because I know which pin the kid wants and the button. The pin is of Mothra from Japan and it's my favorite.
I tell her no and that she can find the pin on Ebay and the button was a commissioned work made for me. I actually spent money getting this made for me.
EM just said, " I know you didn't waste your money on this stuff, the pin is like five bucks and the button you got for free out of some kid grabbag."
I am shocked and pull up the pin on my phone and shows the price to be about $25 and my friend's Furaffinity comission page which proves I paid at least $15 for a custom button of my Griffin. I tell her no and that she can buy these online and that I will not just GIVE her these.
She decides to tell my manager I stole the pin and button from her daughter. My manager on the other hand tells the woman that I have had these on my vest since I started in March.
My manager also was on my side because EM is a down right Karen to nearly all in the store. She complains about nearly every service we provide even if the provisions are needed.
She still goes off about the pin and button that her daughter deserves them and I am a grown woman who needs to grow up. My manager tells her to leave me alone and let me do my job.
So in short I am expected to give my own personal property to a customer's child. After saying no I am accused of stealing from her and that I somehow MUST give it up because Mothra pin and my Griffin button are for kids. (FYI I don't know what American kid would like Japanese Godzilla movies currently)
I am glad my manager agreed with me and also backed me up.
