Dev Diary #67: Nomsyulhan & Gozengun
Hello there! u/werdna881 here again! Told you you’d be seeing me again, and this time… Oh, this time I’m very, very proud to present a project that’s been more-or-less, on-and-off, two years in the making, and the name of it is Nomsyulhan. While some of you may be familiar with the bitbucket, today is a proper showcase for what's been cooking. So strap yourself in, today we’re in for a ride.

Map

As you can already see below, North Haless, now called Gozengun, has gotten a huge shakeup, with over a dozen new tags. A lot of wasteland has been filled in or reworked (no more cheese wasteland, folks!), and even the ancient homeland of the Khantaar has been revealed. Here the Runsukhi in the lowlands are controlled by their plateau dwelling kin, and we can see many other abundant changes. So let's get right into them, shall we?
THE VALLEY, THE VALLEY IS REAL- *ehem* alright, now that that's out of our systems, let's move on.

Nomsyulhan

Nomsyulhan, a rough approximation from the Hobgoblin tongue for “Where Sky Touches Earth” in Common, encompasses an area that many refer to as “The Valley” - though it is far more than that. In ancient times, when the Precursors invaded Haless for access to its ample spirit energies, it was not uninhabited. In Haless proper dwelt the ancient Hill Giants and their giantkin servants. In the south, “Haless Proper” consisting of Rahen, Yanshen, and Vimdatrong (the name for what was once unimaginatively called South Haless), the Precursors slaughtered their servants and destroyed their kingdoms, siphoning the immense spiritual energy with the great spirit complexes… except in Nomsyulhan.
In Nomsyulhan dwelt a kingdom of Stone Giants, magnificent artisans and artists who sculpted great works of stone, going as far as to create numerous keeps and cities which would be traded to their sky-borne Cloud Giant cousins. These giants had been rocked by a rebellion of their Ogrish servants, many of whom stole their secrets and fled to the wilderness beyond the mountains and made their way east. The Precursors destroyed this kingdom as well, and found the corpse of an ancient True Stone Giant - a massive, primordial being lithified in the deserts. Here in Nomsyulhan within the skull of this dead creature, the Precursors would create the test bed for all their interplanetary portal magics, a dark gateway housed in the pried open maw of the ancient stone corpse.
Fed by the Spirit Grid, the Precursors used this gateway of their creation to explore the stars, and created a great city on the shores of the local lake to house their best and brightest explorers, researchers, and early settlers for their colonies among the stars. Only when a world was assured to be tamed would it be connected to the Pillar of Heaven in Aelantir and contact granted to the heart of the Empire. Meanwhile the gateway in Nomsyulhan would be set to explore new worlds and acquire new material for their many experiments.
Abandoned after the Call of Reflection however, the Precursors would shutter away their experiments, lock the doors, and seal the few known passages with elaborate wards to ensure none could follow after them. For thousands of years these magics decayed, breaking, twisting, releasing captured horrors that were thankfully contained both by the high surrounding mountains, and the wards blocking passage out or in... But after the rise of the Nadimraj, Nomsyulhan would encounter its first sapient inhabitants in millennia…

The Soulseeker Ogres

The Soulseekers are descendant servants of the Hill Giants of Haless. They revere the Stone Giants, worshipping the uncountable statues that dot the landscape. Originally dwelling in Northern Rahen, these Ogres fled across the Serpentspine itself, finding no passes or passages to ease their travels but instead climbing those deadly peaks and entering Nomsyulhan on foot. The Soulseekers are different from the Fathides and Mossmouths, and even the Horned Ogres of Azjakuma, for the Soulseekers deny their innate Hunger, and have not replaced it with the consumption of Chi.
Olkhalsu, written by Dragonchef, often do trade with the Relic Guilds of Bazuneizar. Not just in Precursor Relics, but valuable steel.
The Soulseekers check their hunger through fasting, asceticism, and monastic dwelling in Temple-Holdfasts, vast urban constructs and safeholds (suspiciously similar to the Kelaktar of the Fathides and the Shigirii of Azjakuma…) amidst the incredibly lethal alien wildlife that is endemic to Nomsyulhan. During the summer, many Soulseekers venture out, roaming the wilderness to graze domesticated beasts alien to the rest of Halann, and offer homage and patronage to the thousands of statues of their gods, the Giants, found littered in various states of decay, destruction, and emotional state.
Shevhedil, by ogre expert Alpog! Poor in material, but rich in spiritual wealth and knowledge of the wastes.
However, the Soulseekers are not alone in their inhabitance of Nomsyulhan, and as you may have noticed from the map at the start… bear a curious naming pattern that may seem familiar to some lore aficionados…

The Eagle Hobgoblins

Those Harimari in Cangji? Not too much to worry about, though they seem very protective of that fire in their house...
The Eagle Soars above the clouds! And with them those that take it as their totem. The Eagle Hobgoblins are the second race of Nomsyulhan, and with them a look into the past… of a kind. Before the time of The Command, before the concept of A Command, and even before The Day of Ashen Skies itself, Hobgoblinkind was ruled by Mage-Shamans, backed with a divine mandate from their gods to rule. When the Day of Ashen Skies occurred, this triggered a mass cultural event known as the Godloss, which made the hobgoblins believe their gods had, or were, abandoning them. We all know the rest of the story… or do we?
Around the province of Maruvad there is a great edifice of the Raheni High Gods, called the Godswall, and was settled by the hobgoblins while they inhabited the Raheni Highlands. When Harimar began his unification of Rahen, he led his armies to push the Hobgoblins back into the caves of the Serpentspine, by fire, blood, and sword. Dozens of clans fled to the base of the Godswall, and more besides were forced to retreat there after one of Harimar’s armies cut any chance of passage to the dubious safety of the Serpentspine. One mage, known only by history as Kuense, discovered a stair passage hidden under an incredibly powerful illusion spell. Climbing it, he found himself atop the Godswall, and returned, first leading his own clan to safety, and then the remainder, before sealing the passage behind them by fusing the stone shut. Up here in the heights, the hobgoblins who had followed Kuense would take the totem of the Eagle, and see magic not as their people’s destruction- but salvation.
Gosh Golly Darnit wrote these magnificent ideas, and they go oh so very hard.
The Eagle Hobgoblins of Nomsyulhan retain the ancient ways of their race, ruled in semi-permanent clans led by their most powerful mages. Venerating the concept of Cosmic Order through the lens of their old gods, who have morphed over time to more represent “Laws” of Magic (completely divested from the Cannorian School of thought as well). They value freedom and the quest for individual enlightenment as they soar through the skies on the backs of Dragonnel - small winged, dragon-like creatures that can be found in the peaks of Nomsyulhan. But it is to be remembered they are still hobgoblins, and they still have a duty to their clan as a whole. Though the mages may rule, they are expected to aid and assist those further down the ladder than them in their own quest for Enlightenment, for greed and selfishness is the gateway for Chaos, and the descent to Entropy.
Naturally, as a senior writer, I refused to be outdone by the smaller writer.
Each of these races get their own tech groups, but I won’t necessarily spoil those surprises, here at least.

The Talda'Khudi

To the east lay the lands of Khaalshag and Moduk, which have also seen a revamp alongside Nomsyulhan under the collective region name Gozengun, a Daenguni exonym for the region once simply called "North Haless". As you have no doubt noticed below, the Oinukhudi Cheqh’anate rule from the Forbidden Plains to the west to bordering Daengun in the east. These forest and steppe nomads are the Oinukhudi, a horde ruled by the Cheqh’an, or Divine King. They and their subjects practice Un Khudai, or One Harmony in Common- a spiritualistic faith that seeks harmony and balance with the various spirits of nature, appeasing them and working with them as their roles of custodians of the land. But in 1444, the Oinukhudi find themselves in a fragile position.
Your territories are wide and vast, o' Cheqh'an... but beware the thundering of hooves and claws...
The current Cheqh’an has a tenuous grip on power, as various Taishi Bannerlords rule much of the Oinukhudi heartland. Meanwhile the Hill Trolls; once ancient servants of the Hill Giants of Gozengun, tend to their mastodon herds in ancient woods, ruled by their vassal king who swears to the Cheqh’an. Finally, to the west, the Anarkhudi, cousins to the Oinukhudi venture daringly out through the Iron Gate of Shoran, an ancient Fire Giant Fortress, into the Forbidden Plains. The prosperity of the Cheqh’anate has brought the small urban cities much, but left them filled to bursting with too many hands and mouths. Desperate to alleviate their overpopulation crisis, decades ago under the current Cheqh’an’s heir, a figure beloved by all, they pushed forward into the plains and did something thought impossible - conquer territory from the Centaurs, even if it cost him his very life, and the will of his father to rule.
The Oinukhudi are a much more traditional take for life in the northern forests and steppes... but still recognizably Anbennar!
Now however, war seems inevitable; it can be delayed, but after the death of the current Cheqh’an, there is certainly no hope to avoid the Talda’Khudi.
Those enclaves are intended! Be considerate of your choices...
Who shall stand? Who shall fall? Will there ever be unity in the north again?
While no Mingsplosion, the Talda’Khudi sees the Oinukhudi Cheqh’anate shatter in three, with the Anarkhudi and Hill Trolls breaking away, and the Oinukhudi themselves facing internal chaos. You will struggle, you will bleed. But in the end? There can only be One Harmony- yours.
The Hill Trolls of Gozengun are the last remnants of an ancient age.

Formables

For both races of Nomsyulhan, there are two formables you can create- for the Soulseekers, uniting enough of the region allows you to create Samthalsu, a great confederacy of the Temple-Holdfasts.
Samthalsu means \"Three Souls\", an alliance of the desert basin's major Temple-Holdfasts.
As well, the Hobgoblins aren’t left out either, with their very own formable in Nirenun Syul!
Nirenun Syul translates to \"Convocation (of the) Sky\", aptly fitting for the Eagle Hobgoblins

Outro

Now, some of you might be thinking “But wait? No MTs? Bad Update! Dead Mod!” Now, whilst true that initially there will be no beloved Anbennar Mission Trees for the region, we working on Gozengun decided to allocate our time in ensuring we have as solid a foundation for lore and tag concepts as possible for future development. We are only human, this is a volunteer project, and we didn’t want to have as long a wait in between updates as last time! As well, any MTs will no doubt wish to make use of the abundant Precursor relics found across the region, including a certain Pillar...
There’s plenty I didn’t cover in this development diary, from the Plateau Monasteries of the Runsukhi, to the Ashwoven Harimari of Cangji, and the Relic Guilds of Bazuneizar, but that is not for today, nor the immediate future… so I leave you today with a beautiful sneak peek of Biegeltoren’s latest work for Anbennar- depicting Salvation’s Promise.
The image here depicts an event referred to as the Salvation of the Sandmaw, taking place roughly over a period between 5-15 years After Ash.
Salvation's Promise is an ancient Stone Giant fortification that once marked the only entrance to their kingdom from the west, and their distant kin the Fire Giants. A vast switchback that climbs from the base of the Range of the Damned to the very top, it is a dizzying array of fortifications and pathways. Inhabited in 1444 by Motelisamok, in Common known as The Wardens of Heaven. These are the last independent Soulseeker ogres west of the Kharunyana after Kuenan Nirokyu's invasion of The'as Aschur. Here they guard the ascension to the mountain realms, in earlier times against the peoples of the Steppe, and later marauding centaur Caehns.
So I leave you with that, my friends and companions! Stay tuned for this upcoming Tuesday, where the rest of Haless gets to shine!

On to another release on the 15th and lets just say it not looking as rossy. So yeah IF is not really doing all that hot so far. Yes the screenings are still limited. They might never not be limited to be fair although it should at least push up to like 20k screenings you would hope.
But still this is likely gonna be another one of those $0.5-2M at best movies this year joining the likes of Madame Web, Fall Guy, Argylle and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.

2024.06.09 18:06 Froggyspirits Current card for Forbidden Door III

I. AEW Women's World Championship: "Timeless" Toni Storm vs Mina Shirakawa - the single best built match on the card.
II. AEW Men's World Championship: Swerve Strickland vs Will Ospreay
III: IWGP World Heavyweight Championship: Jon Moxley vs Tetsuya Naito II
IV. Winner Take All: Mercedes Moné (TBS Champion) vs Stephanie Vaquer (NJPW Strong Women's Champion)
V. 6-man Ladder Match for the vacant TNT Championship: Konosuke Takeshita vs Mark Briscoe vs Jack Perry (about to beat Dustin Rhodes on Dynamite in order to qualify) vs winner of the Dante Martin vs Lee Moriarty qualifier vs ??? vs ??? (NJPW wrestler and CMLL wrestler?)
VI. NJPW Television Championship: Jeff Cobb just issued an open challenge to the AEW roster at NJPW Dominion - we will find out next week who is going to answer it.
VII. Orange Cassidy vs Zack Sabre Jr.
VIII. MJF match. Not made official yet, but it's an absolute guarantee that he's going to be on the main card given that he is the hometown of Long Island and one of AEW's biggest draws. LIJ will likely be involved in this match since MJF is currently feuding with their associate RUSH.
~ ~ ~
Assuming that this PPV is going to have 10 matches on the main card like most AEW PPVs, I'm guessing that they're going to add two of the following matches to the card before June 30th:
Owen Hart Cup: Bryan Danielson vs Shingo Takagi. 2024 is the Year of the Dragon, and both Singo and Danielson are Dragons.
• Bullet Club War Dogs vs Bullet Club Gold: Finlay, Gabe Kidd, Clark Connors & Drilla Moloney vs Jay White, Juice Robinson, Colten Gunn & Austin Gunn
• Second Battle of Long Island: Willow Nightingale & Tam Nakano vs Kris Statlander & Thekla (note: both Tam and Thekla aren't booked for autograph sessions in Japan during the Forbidden Door week, so it's likely that both of them are going to be on Long Island on June 30th.)
Chris Jericho match. This guy hasn't missed a single PPV main card over the past 4.5 years apart from All Out 2023 - he's probably gonna do his annual team-up with Minoru Suzuki at the PPV or something, probably gonna invite him to join his Learning Tree.
Young Bucks match. They're either going to defend their AEW tag belts or they're going to be part of an alliance vs alliance match like last year. If it's the latter, they are going to be opposed by an alliance led by FTR. Motor City Machine Guns and Bishamon might be involved in this match.
Okada match. Unless he's going to be in Young Bucks' alliance vs alliance match.

2024.06.09 18:03 ReadingLizard Trip Report - 6/4-10

Hello all! Just got home from an extended vacation in GA/FL. During our trip, we spent T-F at Universal.
Lodging - we elected to stay at Loew’s Royal Pacific; this gave us unlimited express passes for our group of 9 and was far cheaper to have the rooms than to purchase them separately and stay elsewhere. We had 2 2-Queen bed rooms, one with a rollaway.
Tickets - we were fortunate to be able to purchase 3 park military freedom passes (like a season pass, expires 12/20/24) for 6 of us and the others are GA residents who got deeply discounted tickets for 3 park hoppers.
The group - myself (51) with my kids (13 & 10), my 84 y/o mom (scooter rental with Gold Mobility), my 61 y/o sister, my 39 y/o niece and her kids (15, 13, & 11)
We checked in around 10am on Tuesday, 6/4. Luckily, one of our rooms was ready so we stashed our luggage and hit Universal Studios. I expected huge crowds and while it was slightly crowded, it didn’t seem outrageous (we last came 2 years ago in October, as that is when we normally hit WDW and these crowds seems comparable). Express pass allowed us to wait no more than 30 minutes for any ride that day, most waits being less than 15. Managed Minions, Villan-con, Rip Ride Rocket (of our carts, only 1 person got the secret menu to work, my sister), Transformers, Mummy (top ride for everyone in the group), Gringotts, Simpsons (epic fail for all of us - nausea central and was VERY hot inside the ride), ET, MIB, Jimmy Fallon, F&F (we rode it to say that we had and it was as bad as most folks say haha), Trolls (sweet little coaster for younger kids).
That evening, everyone was exhausted from our previous travels (we had spent 2 days at St Augustine beach where I stupidly got 2nd sunburn) and prior to that had 3 days in GA at a family reunion. We opted to eat at the resort and enjoy the pool. Tuk Tuk market has great offerings for reasonable resort pricing and the Bula poolside location had some of the best tacos I have ever had.
Day 2 (Wednesday, 6/5) - spent the whole day at Islands. We planned to rope drop for Hagrid’s however kids were too tired to be pleasant for that. We opted to get there when kids naturally woke up (ended up being around 10am). Park was more crowded than the day before (of course we didn’t hit Islands so could have been similar on Tuesday). Hit Hagrid’s first and our wait was about 100 minutes. It wasn’t awful but they should really consider more water fountains and a sun sail over parts of the outside queue. IMO, this is the best ride over all the parks - thrilling enough, fun and exhilarating, but not jostling or scary. After that, we also rode Velocicoaster (another fave, however left me with a headache), Spider-Man, caroseussel, cat in the hat, Hippogriff, forbidden journey, trolly train, Hulk, Jurassic park River adventure, Popeyes (Dudley was down), Kong. My daughter was the only one who wanted to do Doom so she rode alone.
Lunch at the 3 Broomsticks - food was decent, not amazing. Probably the most bland meal we had the whole trip. The pasties at the carts are more flavorful. Honestly, the new ordering system seems slower and again, if they are asking folks to wait outside to be seated, they should provide some shade. The whole line was in direct Sun. My mom nearly fainted as it’s not navigable by scooter (requiring her to stand) so TM’s agreed to let her sit in nearby shade until the rest of the group was inside the building.
We had dinner that night at the resort again as the whole group couldn’t agree on where to eat at CityWalk. Again, food was incredible however overpriced at Islands’ Dining. Kids had pizza and nuggets from Tuk Tuk.
Day 3 (Thursday, 6/8) - Volcano Bay! This park was great. Arrived around 10am. We chose to rent a family cabana which honestly even with the cost ($1100) I would not go without if we return. Allowed my mom (again scooter, and she no longer swims) a place to rest where she could enjoy the sights, home base for kids to wander and return to as well. This also allowed the group to use the in cabana Tapu Tapu system to access the virtual queue without walking to every ride. The aqua coaster was PHENOMENAL! Fun, thrilling, a little scary. Again, park was crowded but not insanely so. We rode every ride we wanted to (none brave enough for the Ko’Okiri plunge) and still had time to do some 3-4 times. The day ended slightly early due to lightening and a rainstorm about 40 minutes before regular closing time. Had lunch there in the cabana and food was again delicious. Highly recommend the rib plate!
Dinner was at Toothsome - atmosphere was lovely and the food was great. Honestly, the milkshakes didn’t live up to the hype - flavors were mild and the saving grace was the “add-ons” such as a whole slice of pie or a whole cupcake. But the macarons were some of the best we have ever had. Better than the French pastry shop at Epcot.
Our last day provided time to return to any rides we wanted another go - Rip Ride (again, some struggled to get the secret song menu to work), Mummy, Velocicoaster, Hippogriff, Hulk, forbidden journey, gringotts.
Overall, we had an amazing time. Lessons learned? Don’t get a terrible sunburn and make sure to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, don’t go during June (or July/August honestly), seek shade often if you ignore the previous suggestion, stay at the premium resort, get the cabana at Volcano Bay, bring Tylenol with you, take insulated water bottles and ask for ice water at every chance (or refill at the freestyle machines), wear a hat and sunglasses, carry a Fanny pack since a lot of rides will allow that and no other items. Oh and pay attention to your locker for Velocicoaster! I do wish they modified the line queues for allow for scooter access. We often struggled to get a wheelchair just for the lines and she doesn’t care for being pushed. She walks unassisted in normal life, but age and double hip replacement make long distances and endurance difficult. This is an area that WDW excels in.
Sorry for the novel, but maybe it will help someone.

2024.06.09 17:29 OrlonDogger A Witch at Midnight - Chapter 38

[First] [Previous] [Next]
With the use of ancient and forbidden magic, a handful of Mages erased the collective memory of the world, turning many innocent practitioners into mere Sleepers. Only a few trusted folk were left with access to the Runes, and the vast majority of those left with power united to form two sister organizations: The Exodus Corps and the Genesis Corps. One to oversee mages, and one to look after Sleepers.

“Okay, two things.” Tav interrupted once again. “First, I have never heard of any of those, so I assume they either died off or are a secret.”

“Correct on both accounts.” Mustafá nodded.

“I guess Genesis is no more then.” The youth blinked. “Anyways… So we are dealing with Exodus now, which has the power to erase and rewrite memories!? What hope do we have against power like that!?”

The alchemist closed her eyes. She agreed, full heartedly, that such tremendous power shouldn’t be in the hands of anyone.

“I am unsure if such magic is possible anymore, with the changes in how information works and flows in our world.” Mustafá shrugged softly. “But it is not worth it to worry about that, at least not for now. May I continue?”

With Tav’s nod, the old mage continued her story.

The arrival of the Age of Silence did not stop the efforts of humanity for complete control of Jericho. More and more magical beings were erased or enslaved, for people considered them an abomination against their new understanding of the world.

Until everything reached a breaking point.

Mustafá glared for a moment, falling silent and taking a sip of her tea before resuming.

One day, all of a sudden, all magical creatures disappeared from the face of Jericho, apparently at the same time. And soon after that… a mist began spreading through the entire world. A thick, malicious fog carrying horrors of flesh and bone to Jericho, turning animals and humans alike into abominations which had been hidden in the imagination of men for the longest time.

The survivors came to call this cataclysmic event ‘The First Sacrifice’, and it is thought to be the revenge of the forsaken Presences of Jericho, and the many displaced magical creatures.

“It took centuries to rebuild the world after that.” Mustafá said, looking into her cup of tea. “It was terrible for everyone involved… and now, a little beyond six hundred years later, we are facing the start of a Second Sacrifice, a return of the same mist that once covered the world, and the horrors that come with it.”

Storytime was over. Tav’s eyes stared into the middle distance as she tried to imagine it, a fog so thick that could cover the Sun in its entirety. Nightmarish beings roaming the land, death for everyone. She shivered, closing her eyes and trembling for a moment before looking at her teacher once again.

“Wait. How do you even know it is coming? How can you be so sure?” The youth questioned.

“I learned to see the signs, the shifts in the mana of the world, the changes in the Third Layer, the apparent reduction in the amount of unexplainable events.” The alchemist sighed, before forcing herself to admit. “I am not the only one who has been fearing this, nor the only one who has confirmed its coming.”

“H-How long do we have?” The apprentice was starting to feel the pressure. “Is there something we can do!?”

“I don’t have a specific date, but I know that it must happen this year.” Mustafá shook her head, setting her empty cup on the table. “As per what we can do… the book must be the answer. It was written by one of the greatest minds from the First Sacrifice.”

“Humiko did look like the sort of person who knew things…” Tav mumbled mostly to herself. “... Where will it all start?”

“The North Pole.” The teacher nodded softly.

“That’s where we have to go as soon as this book is translated, then. That’s what her introduction said…” The young one finished her cup of tea in one gulp, setting it down as well. “Let’s get to it.”

If Mustafá had the power of smiling right there, she would. Her lips curled up, ever so slightly, as she nodded and cracked her knuckles, walking over to the pile of dried clothes and pulling her turban out. She couldn’t teach without it, at least she felt that way.

“Where’s the iron? I wish to iron my clothes.” The alchemist stretched lazily. “Once that’s done, we are leaving again. We will practice in your assigned Elysium.”

“Isn’t that a bit dangerous? Anyone could see us.” Tav asked to divert from the fact that she didn’t exactly remember where her iron was.

“That’s the point. You need to be seen, at least a little bit, before people stop suspecting you of being evil, or worse, a leech on society.” Mustafá, catching the nervous glances of her apprentice, just sighs and conjures both an iron and an ironing board with a flick of her wrist.

The younger one sighs in relief, before she suddenly realizes something.

“Wait, if you can just conjure stuff like that, why did we have to go to Obuda for bread!? Couldn’t you just summon or create the bread instead of paying for it!?”

“I am not good at making bread.” The alchemist answered, setting her clothes on the board and plugging in the iron.

“Oh but you’re good at making electrical appliances?” The apprentice grew rowdy.

“One.” Mustafá began counting with her fingers. “I am not creating these, I am technically summoning them from my apartment. Two, I am very good at making electrical appliances, thank you. Three, you can only create the objects that you actually understand, so even if I know how bread is made, my lack of talent for baking means my produce will always be inferior to an actual baker.”

“Oh…” Tav frowned. “I guess that makes sense…”

“Four. Just for that, you’re ironing my clothes.” The teacher walked back to her seat.

“Argh, you bitch…”

Knowing that arguing with this woman was useless, the apprentice sighed and got to work immediately, politely leaving the underwear on the side to work with the rest of the clothes. She had her limits.

Honestly, when I started thinking and hearing about Elysiums as magical places, I was expecting something far more mystical or something. Not that there’s anything wrong with a mysterious building in the middle of the city, no; I guess these hideouts need to keep appearances up so people don’t come around making the wrong questions, but… a Cat Café? Really? I didn’t even know we had one in Saüle!

Entering wasn’t a problem, for the place opened quite early in the morning. Soon enough, Mustafá and I are sitting on a puffy couch, in the middle of a warm and comfortable living room decorated with pastel colours and many figurines of cats… not to mention the REAL cats, gathering around Mustafá like bees to honey while completely ignoring me.

She doesn’t look really happy about it.

“The more magical potential you develop, the more you start attracting cats. Or repelling them. It’s a coin toss, depends on the cat really.” She explains with a sigh. “That’s why cats make good familiars.”

“So familiars are a thing, huh?” I tilt my head.

“Of course they are a thing. Did you really think no one would try magic with animal companions? They are dumb as bricks, but useful if you are into that.” Mustafá clearly wasn’t into that, gently pushing the cats away from her as they purred and seeked her attention. “Shoo.”

To keep appearances, and to enjoy the delicious hot cocoa they serve here, we decide to stay a bit in the actual café… but soon enough, Mustafá grows restless and annoyed with all the attention and demands we go into the Elysium proper. Right when I am finally managing to bond with a silly but loving orange cat! I don’t even manage to make the silly lasagna cat joke when she pulls me by the arm and takes me over to the kind lady tending to the café.

I don’t even get the chance to speak when suddenly my teacher pulls out both of our credentials. For a moment I think her mad… but then, I try to put those feelings down and trust her. She is my teacher now, after all! She’s supposed to know what she’s doing.

“Ah…” The lady nodded, recognition in her eyes. “Sorry, I didn’t know you were kin. Let me register your entrance.”

Mustafá probably feels my eyes on her, asking questions in silence, because she immediately says:

“Most Elysiums, except for the more public ones, have a guardian that keeps tabs on who enters and who exits them. The members of the Brotherhood are fascists.”

I immediately tell her to hush up, checking to see if the café lady heard her. Luckily, she seems busy looking for her note book. With a sigh, I turn to Mustafá and shake my finger.

“Don’t. Say those things. We all think them, we all know they are true, but we don’t just call a pig a pig to its face!!” I can feel the strength leaving my body as I tell this to her. Her lack of common sense is killing me.

“You’re way too soft.” She simply says, shrugging as the tending lady returns with an open book. “Put your thumb on the page and sign your name.”
I do as she says, even though there’s no ink to dunk my finger in or anything. The paper itself takes the print from my thumb and I feel a little burning sensation on my skin for a few seconds. With a wince I pull my hand off, shaking it for a moment and then taking the pencil to sign my name besides the black print.

Mustafá does the same soon enough, without even caring about the burn, and then we are both directed to a door ‘in the end of the hallway, to your left’. She just lets us leave, just like that! Not even doubting our intentions or anything. Again, I turn to my teacher as we walk through the hall.

“What was that all about?”

“To avoid people using glamour, which is a thing by the way, to sneak in with other identities, they use special paper to reveal your real identity using your fingerprints.” She shrugs.

“What, can’t you change your fingerprints with magic?” I grin, feeling smart and subversive.

“No.” She answers calmly, turning to the left and facing a wall in the hallway. “One of the aspects in which Sleeper Technology has surpassed us is the ability to modify and take care of the body.”

Now that takes me by surprise.

“So there’s no magical medicine?!” I say, louder than I intended.

“You can make magical remedies and enhancements, but magic can’t directly warp the body in any shape or form.” She explained, looking for the Phi symbol carved in the wall. “We are too dense, too attached to our body… It’s also forbidden to even try. We don’t want to end up with another ‘Flesh Sculptor’ situation.”

“A what situation?” Now that has to be made up, I demand for it to be made up.

“Ah, here it is.” Mustafá ignores me once more, pushing a finger against the symbol on the wall and letting her magic do the rest… I watch the octarine travel through her body into the wooden wall, forming a round door leading to a set of stairs. “Come.”

“No, seriously, what was that about ‘Flesh Sculptors’!?” I follow closely to her, watching our access into the dark stairway close right behind us.

“Don’t worry about it. They used to be a great number of them among the necromancers, but lately it’s just an old wives’ tale. Something to make little kids wet their pants.” Again, the damn crone (because I am sure she’s far older than she looks) comes so close to smiling it is actually a bit unnerving.

Honestly… the more I learn of this magical world, the more scared I feel.

2024.06.09 16:46 Battlesmith707 Dispossessed Homebrew Archetypes: Warden Prince, Cogsmith, Ranger, Alms Matron

So, having created my Runesmith Archetype as well as a Khazalid Runework mechanic, I'm going to build four more archetypes, each representing an aspect of Duardin society. It is strongly encouraged that you check out my Runesmith archetype, because at least two of these archetypes start with runes.
First we have the Warden Prince - a frontline fighter who also has some room to dabble in leadership or diplomacy skills.
Then there's the Cogsmith - a character with high crafting who is primarily focused on ranged damage using black powder weaponry, but also gets bonuses when operating war machines or artillery.
After that is the Ranger - a versatile class that specializes in stealth and ranged combat, but also has the tools needed to be a decent frontline fighter in a pinch.
Lastly there is the Alms Matron. The Alms Matron is a name I pulled from a novel called Chronicles of the Wanderer. From what I gather they're basically the Priestesses of Valaya. The Alms Matron is primarily a support class who can use Miracles - I've taken a bunch of thematic miracles from Alarielle, Grimnir, and Grungni, and reflavoured them around Valaya. She also has access to a number of skills and talents that may serve the party outside of combat. I will note that her ability to use Miracles might not strictly be lore accurate, but at the same time - if Grimnir gets Miracles despite being dead, and Grungni gets Miracles despite being an absentee god, why can't Valaya?
All-in-all I feel like I've laid the groundwork to have a relatively balanced well-rounded party consisting of nothing but Dispossessed.
WARDEN PRINCE
Warden Kings are the rulers of the Dispossessed Clans, and like most Kings, they require heirs. A Warden Prince is the son of a Warden King. From a young age they are trained to fight and to lead, with the expectation that their father shall not live forever. However only one of these children - the eldest son - can take their father's throne. Which then raises the question of what the remainder will do. Some serve the new King as generals and advisors, while others are married off to prominent figures within the clan, or to different clans entirely.
Others become Soulbound.
Many young Dispossessed Princes (and Princesses) who find themselves low in the line of succession leap at the chance to join a Binding. It is an opportunity to earn glory for themselves and their clan without forever remaining in the shadow of their older siblings, and it is also a respectable way to avoid being assigned an unwanted marriage. It also provides a chance to travel the Mortal Realms and potentially even explore the lost Karaks - many Soulbound Warden Princes dream of the day they can say they were the first to set foot in their clan's ancestral home in over five centuries.
A Warden Prince is a trained and well-equipped fighter, who due to the length of Duardin lifespans may already have decades of experience under their belt. Not only can they fight, but they can also lead - having been raised with the expectation that they will play a commanding role in either the court or the armies of their father or one of their brothers. It is possible that a Warden Prince may even have experience leading Throngs into battle. Beyond that, Warden Princes are also royalty, which may prove to be a boon when interacting with the aristocracy of other factions. Thus they are a welcome addition to any Binding of Order.
While travelling with the Binding, a Warden Prince may insist that they explore any lost Karaks they discover if it does not interfere with the Binding's other obligations. The Prince may wish to either scout them out for possible reclamation, or recover lost treasures. The Prince may appear enthusiastic about this at first, but once they finally walk the empty halls they may find themselves becoming depressed, melancholy, or even angry as they are struck by the full reality of their people's fall from glory.

The Ironweld Arsenal - the great union of Duardin and Human Engineering. As Engineers of the Ironweld Arsenal, Cogsmiths are vital to the Cities of Sigmar war machine. Working closely with their human counterparts, they design, build, maintain, and repair the machinery, vehicles, artillery, and firearms wielded by Sigmar's mortal armies.
It is perhaps little surprise then that many Cogsmiths are happy to become Soulbound. An extended lifespan and ample opportunity to test out their new inventions aside, they are also well-accustomed to working alongside and learning from other species. The Cogsmiths for their part bring a lot to the table - they are expert tinkerers, able to help repair and even improve the weapons of their Binding. They are well-versed in the operation of war machines and vehicles, able to coax more out of them than most. A Cogsmith is also a formidable combatant in their own right, having personally tested many of their own designs, and became a skilled marksman as a result.

Ironweld Engineer
You are a certified member of the Ironweld Arsenal, one of the brightest minds of Duardin and Human Engineering. Whenever you are operating a war machine, a vehicle, or a weapon mounted on a vehicle, and you are required to make a Ballistics Skill Test, you may choose to either substitute your Crafting Skill, or double your Training in Ballistics Skill - whichever one is more likely to yield a better result.
In addition to this, as an Endeavour and with 50D worth of crafting materials you can spend one week tinkering with a handheld non-Aetheric firearm to improve it. This requires Smith's Tools and access to a Workshop. You can make three attempts at an Extended Mind (Crafting) Test with a DN of 5:8. If you succeed, you may apply one of the following upgrades:
  • Improved Sights: While firing this weapon, the wielder's accuracy increases by one step.
  • Longer Barrel: The firearm's range is extended by one zone. Incompatible with Double-Barrel.
  • Double-Barrel: The firearm now has a second barrel. When you make an attack with this weapon, you may either treat it as a dual-wielding attack and split your dice pool, or as a single attack that does extra damage (2 if the weapon is two-handed, 1 if it is one-handed.) Unfortunately, whatever weapon you apply this to also gains the Reload trait if it does not have it already. Incompatible with Longer Barrel.
  • Armour-Piercing: The firearm gains the Penetrating Trait.
  • Armour-Breaking: The firearm gains the Rend Trait.
Only two of these upgrades may be active on a weapon at a time. They are not permanent and can be changed.
DISPOSSESSED RANGER
When asked to describe the natural gifts of the Duardin, few would ever think to list stealth as one of them. But it is - if they put their mind to it. Rangers fulfill a vital niche in Duardin armies - that of scouts, skirmishers, infiltrators, and sharpshooters. In the days of the Khazalid Empire, it was the rangers who kept borders clear of Monsters, Greenskins, and Beastmen. It was the rangers who would not only warn settlements of incoming attack, but also harry and harass the foe by any means necessary while the Throngs were mustered. Even today, long after the Khazalid Empire's collapse, the Dispossessed Clans still have use for rangers. Indeed, it was the rangers who weathered the fall the easiest, for they were accustomed to wandering without a home.
The life of a Ranger is that of a wanderer - spending weeks or even months traversing the wilds, and camping under the open stars. The only Duardin who would voluntarily seek out this life are either outcasts or free-spirits, independently-minded with a strong sense of wanderlust. It is a thankless job - their greatest deeds are committed far from any settlement or army, and therefore go unwitnessed. Most Duardin find their lifestyle and tactics disturbing, and thus, treat them with (usually unwaranted) suspicion.
It is little wonder then that a Ranger would be eager to become Soulbound. As a Soulbound, they are more likely to be working with people who have fewer qualms about their tactics, and may even appreciate their skillset. They can spend greater periods of time travelling, being deployed throughout the Mortal Realms in direct service to a higher power, with no obligation of a clan to return to. It is also possible that the Ranger may have a Criminal past they are attempting to escape from. Members of a Binding may also find a Ranger's company preferable to that of other Duardin, for Rangers tend to be less hidebound than most of their Dispossessed kin, while still retaining a strong sense of duty and integrity.

ALMS MATRON
Little is known about the Alms Matrons - also known as the Priestesses of Valaya, Duardin Ancestor Goddess of Hearth and Home. The birth rate of Duardin females was already low to begin with, and most Dispossessed Clans are fiercely protective of their women as a result. Even more confounding is the worship of the dead goddess Valaya. Despite all this, Priestesses of Valaya are an integral part of Dispossessed society - primarily serving as healers and mediators. They wield immense influence over the internal politics of their clans, and all Dispossessed instinctively treat them with respect.
It is not impossible that, in less hidebound clans, Duardin of other genders may come to serve Valaya in the same capacity. But it would be regarded as unusual.
Valaya's fate remains a mystery. Some say she is dead, others say she is in hiding. Some say she died during the Great Betrayal, others say her death came long before that - possibly during the last days of the World-That-Was. Some say she will return, as the Fyreslayers believe Grimnir will, while others have given up any hope of this. In either case, it takes far more than the death of their God to make a Duardin abandon their faith.
Additional puzzlement comes in the fact that some Alms Matrons have been known to invoke Miracles of their goddess. Scholars can only speculate as to why this is - perhaps it is due to the power of their faith, or maybe Valaya does still exist in some form. Humans and Aelven scholars have also put forward the idea that perhaps Alarielle or Grungni are behind this.
It is exceedingly rare for an Alms Matron to become a Soulbound, primarily because it is difficult to convince a servant of Hearth and Home to leave both of those things behind. But it can happen, especially if there are other Duardin in the Binding or the Binding's goals align with the Clan's. Though not well-suited to direct combat, Alms Matrons can serve their Bindings in other useful ways - as healers, diplomats, scholars, and priests.

MIRACLES OF VALAYA
(Note: These Miracles are ultimately just reflavoured Miracles of Grungni, Grimnir, and Alarielle from the Core Rulebook and Champions of Order. I might homebrew actual Miracles of Valaya in the future, but for now you can use these as a stand-in.)
Hearth Queen's Balance
Target: 1
Range: Close
Duration: Instant
You can heal the wounds of another by taking on a portion of their suffering. A creature you touch can reduce the severity of one Wound. In exchange, you must take a Minor Wound or increase the severity of a Wound you already have.
Blessing of Valaya
Target: Zone
Range: Long
Duration: Permanent
You infuse the earth with the essence of life, causing plants in an area to grow and bloom. This can be used to bolster crops and revitalise a land tainted by Chaos. You can also choose to shape the growth into simple structures, such as growing winding roots and vines into a ladder or small bridge, or creating cover for you and your allies. In combat, these simple structures can form bridges between Zones, or can be used to give one Zone the Cover Trait
The plants and wildlife created by this Miracle are permanent but will decay naturally if left unattended in an inhospitable environment.
Wrath of the Hearthqueen
Cost: 1 Mettle
Target: Zone
Range: Medium
Duration: Sustained
You fill an area with uncomfortable searing heat, scalding and disorienting any who trespass there. Choose a Zone within Medium Range. That Zone gains the Difficult Terrain and Minor Hazard Traits. Additionally, creatures entering or starting their turn in the Zone must make a DN 6:1 Body (Might) Test or be Restrained until the start of their next turn. When you use this Miracle, you can choose to spend an additional Mettle to increase the Complexity of this Test by 1, to DN 6:2. On your turn, you can spend 1 Mettle as a Free Action to sustain this Miracle.
Heat of the Hearth
Target: Zone
Range: Self
Duration: Instant
A wave of heat washes over your zone, comforting your allies and scalding your foes. Make a 5:1 Soul (Devotion) test.
  • You and your allies within your zone recover one toughness per success.
  • Enemies within your zone suffer one damage per success.
You may spend a mettle to trigger both effets.
Find Strength in Her Absence
Target: 1
Range: Long
Duration: Sustained
Cost: 1 Mettle
Choose an allied target within long range. While the target has no allies in the same Zone, its Melee and Accuracy increase by two steps and it gains +2 Armour. If an ally enters the target’s Zone, this Miracle’s effect is suppressed until the ally leaves the Zone again. On your turn, you can spend 1 Mettle as a Free Action to sustain this Miracle.
Hearth Queen's Endurance
Target: Zone
Range: Self
Duration: Sustained
Make a DN 6:1 Soul (Devotion) Test. Whenever you or your allies within Short Range suffer Damage caused by fire or heat, reduce the Damage by 1 for each success. On your turn, you can spend 1 Mettle as a Free Action to sustain this Miracle.
Cauterise
Target: 1
Range: Close
Duration: Instant
Heat can be used as a tool of healing. Make a DN 4:1 Soul (Devotion) Test as you place a Holy Symbol of Valaya on a wounded ally. They recover Toughness equal to 1 plus the number of successes. When you use this Miracle, you can choose to spend a Mettle to add your Soul to the Toughness recovered.
Comforting Embers
Target: Allies within range
Range: Short
Duration: Sustained
Cost: 1 Mettle
You call forth a rain of glowing embers that fill your allies with warmth and encourage them to press on. When you use this Miracle, allies within range increase their Speed by one step and ignore Difficult Terrain until the beginning of your next turn, though they cannot Flee or Retreat until the Miracle ends. On your turn, you can spend 1 Mettle as a Free Action to sustain this Miracle.

2024.06.09 16:34 Careful_Juggernaut53 2 week grad trip to China

Hey guys! I'm graduating from university in december so I'm planning a 6 week long trip between mid/late December to early February before I start working full time. I want to spend roughly 2 weeks in China, 2 weeks in Korea, and 2 weeks in Japan.
For China I was thinking of visiting Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai. The thing is I don't want to spend too much time or money on flights/trains between cities. I was going to fly in to Hong Kong spend a few days there then fly to Shanghai spend a few days there and take the bullet train to Beijing spend a few days there and then fly out to Korea to continue my trip.
The breakdown would be about 5 days in Hong Kong, 6 days in shanghai, and 7 days in Beijing. I've been to Hong Kong before but only for a day so I want to spend some more time there.
Does this sound doable? Are their any nearby cities I should be hitting? Should I remove a city? Is there a more efficient itinerary? Please let me know.
For reccommendations and context I'm interested in being in the city, looking at modern and ancient architecture, visiting smaller ancient towns, going to museums, seeing important landmarks etc. I'm open to nature focused things as long as it's not physically intensive. I'm a solo black american female traveler. I've only ever been to Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Macau.
Thanks in advance!

2024.06.09 16:28 genericusername1904 SEXUAL IMMATURITY 'AS' THE CULTURE OF INFANTILISM ITSELF, AND THOUGHTS ON THE REMEDY OF THIS BY THE FAMILIAL-TRIBAL UNIT VS THE PROMULGATION OF THIS BY ATOMIZED NUCLEAR FAMILY UNIT

MAIORES. IV, CAL. IUNI. FORTUNA PRIMIGENIA.

This subject follows along from the general conclusion of infantilism, i.e. if we agree that infantilism exists in a culture that therefore all aspects of (such a culture) must be examined as to how they are impacted ‘by’ that infantilism, as: infantilism constitutes an undeveloped form of a thing; here (without covering absolutely every single aspect of it, as this could be a book in and of itself) we explore ‘sexual immaturity’ and its promulgation and consequences (of which we could easily make the case of the consequences as to be the cause of ‘all social ill’).
In an anthropological view; as if like we are looking at a chimpanzee colony, both procreation and familial-tribal child-raising takes place in our contemporary Western societies in a very clumsy sort of way; with the latter (i.e. the actual raising of children) not occurring at all, with the consequence of ‘arrested development’ – usually we would recognize and name it as that, if we ever thought very deeply about it:
However, the notion that all of this could be reduced to and fathomed as ‘sexual immaturity’ is an interesting (and unexplored) avenue to approach these matters from; certainly the act of actual procreation is deliberately accidental (I mean here in the contemporary West) in that a Woman does “not seek a mate” and then become pregnant, i.e. she does not even consider the sexual act to be procreative, rather: she accidentally becomes pregnant (“it was a miracle”), having beforehand and all throughout the duration and beyond it a culture which is far detached from the physical reality of things and thus a new human is created with no forethought for its care or provision and no security net in place to provide for it and ensure its prosperity and intelligent up-bringing, and increasingly there are fewer and fewer intelligent older persons around who are capable of providing the education and care for that child as would naturally exist in the large familial-tribal unit of an extended family where, historically, we all came from and of which is still the norm across much of the world (i.e. village elders who would otherwise raise the children up to be intelligent even if the Mother herself is too young to be a real parent - if we imagine as the species norm would be that most Women historically had their first child at around the age of fourteen or fifteen). Without, then, that familial-tribal unit to instruct and care for the child’s intellectual development and without either land to make a living from to provide for it's economic development then we find a cursed life, that is: a life far more difficult than it otherwise ought be had it been born in a more wisely chosen environment.
My point here is that ‘procreation’ is considered almost never at all by our society as being the most basic step in the creation and promulgation ‘of’ a tribal unit; with procreation itself being left down to blind chance and more often either legitimately accidentally or feigned accidently so as to attempt to cement a relationship (see: divorce and break-up rates in the West), either way this is the material circumstance into which children are born.
To say, then, that not grasping this reality ‘is’ itself a product of sexual immaturity; i.e. a Woman who does not understand what a new human is, seems to me to be far more of an accurate view of the thing than to declare it as ‘sexual immorality’ as it is usually insisted by the Abramic types, as: rather obviously it is ‘Sexual Immaturity’ rather than ‘Sexual Immorality’ that is the really cause of (the above scenario), that is: it is not Men and Women knowing too much about sex but of Men and Women knowing virtually nothing at all and therefore absent of a practice and familiarity necessary for Sexual Maturity, with Sexual Maturity itself being the very thing declared to be Immorality - an irreconcilable paradox.
It seems to me, then, that the habits we observe of ‘accidental pregnancy’ are the natural occurrence in such an unnatural society; that is: a consequence of misplaced moralism over the vital mechanical sexual functions of the human body (a thing which may well dominate and drive our unconsciousness entirely) have been rendered so alien to our expression and consideration but of which are so incessant and irrepressible; that sexual release is habitually denied, I mean here societally (i.e. “it is not polite”), and only finds ‘permission’ to appear in extreme drunkenness in fits of frenzy, and so on, so that when procreation actually occurs it is sporadic and neither at that moment nor before it was the adult rational mind involved – again, this is plainly a consequence of ‘sexual immaturity’ ‘before’ it could ever be said to be a consequence of ‘sexual immorality’.
It’s worth considering, of our own society in contemporary times, how far removed we are from most of the world which practices arrange marriages in one form or another (i.e. whether we are speaking of large tribal units or smaller family units) and what the consequence of this is on our own communities being absent of that; that is: the most fertile years of our lives are not spent having gotten procreation out of the way by having five or six children by the age of twenty or nineteen (so that when the child is fifteen you might be thirty, which seems to be the age where the sexual drive begins to dissipate or has anyway lost its novelty), and instead (i.e. without of being match-made far earlier in life) procreation instead occurs – if it does at all – accidentally and well-past the most fertile and healthy years, with such children being often quite sickly and the strain on the body being significantly more risky to the Mother (haphazardly enabled only then by massive external resources which would not have been required at all beforehand). I do not mean to seem as if I am advocating “having five or six children by the age of twenty or nineteen” only that in our natural environment this has always been the way of the thing due to natural sexual exploration when we are at that age.
At the same time, at the beginning and at the end of this “waste of time” (as I would say) of those most fertile years in which our sexuality is forbidden to us; that culture which we examine here as being simply Sexual Immaturity, it has been the case that that “Immaturity” persists well into later life by those afflicted adults who were forbidden to practise their natural sexuality when they were at the age where they wanted to, that is that the culture and mentality of such persons subjected to such restrictions quite demonstrably can be shown to have regressed them to the point that, as then as adults, they dress as children, speak and think as children, shun adult responsibility and seem altogether to have matured intellectually no further than the age of twelve or thirteen years, despite physiologically and neurologically having surpassed far beyond that early almost larval-like stage of our development where the body and mind are both only partially formed.
Instead it has been the “dragging-out” of that childlike insensibility, again: to no useful outcome, which has by that point in time essentially mitigated most of their procreative potentiality in that 1) physically having children is then far more difficult for them, and 2) they are now twenty-five years behind where their familial-tribal unit might otherwise have been, i.e. they do not have five or six twenty year old children bringing in incomes to the Household (to purchase a Household in the first place if they did not possess one before) or working the land (or likewise to purchase land) so that their prosperity will not have developed beyond mere subsistence off of the external labour market so as to escape the poverty and dependency traps inherent in the cities – which nominally constitutes their entire existence ‘to’ escape such miseries. All in all it is a lot of hard work by that point and I could not help but notice, of my own generation and those slightly older, how this outcome would have been entirely altered and set on a more prosperous trajectory if, say, at the age of sixteen a couple had been put together and had a few children, as: by the age of twenty the best seeds would have been sewn and they would not have to even think about “having children” ever again which is itself a thing, I observe anyway, that is so daunting and bothersome later in life that it really is something better gotten out of the way as early as possible in the manner that we would have done quite naturally otherwise.
If the idea here is to build up that familial-tribal unit then this methodology serves the purpose in the most optimal manner; the adults are freed up and enjoy their liberties, the younger adults (i.e. the teenagers) are preoccupied quite happily fulfilling their single greatest biological urges to have sex as much as they like, and the population figures begin to climb up at a rate of replacement which is far superior, e.g. a thirty year old parent of a fifteen year old only has five years before that fifteen year becomes a physically matured adult ready to contribute to the unit, whereas by contrast a thirty year old parent of a five year old has a great longer time to wait for physical maturity so that the distance between the two age groups becomes fragile and thin the further it is stretched with a concurrent loss of replacement manpower by a space of ten additional years.
There is something to be said for the older more experienced Father, of course, I remember quite well that the children I grew up with whose Fathers were in their forties and fifties and whose Mothers were in their twenties or very early thirties were quite better-off in their disposition and intelligence (whilst those with older Mothers tended to be sickly in one way or another); simply put though I think it is more to do with the experience of age as the influencing factor than anything else and a functional familial-tribal unit would have this influence in far greater capacity.
If we add to this factor the notion of polygamy (something shunned as ‘pagan’ by the Abramic religions yet advocated for in their own holy books, indeed: it was the universal norm) then we find the whole circle being completed in that young teenagers do as they please with each other, becoming familiar with relationship and their sexuality, and then when they reach a more mature age they might marry each other or other people properly so as to begin families of their own; but that by that age they may well have produced several children already via multiple partners so that the actual ‘legitimate children’ (in the sense of inheriting land and titles) of a more formal marriage is superfluous to population replacement insofar as the tribe is concerned, as: they have already increased the headcount quite massively by comparison. It is worth mentioning here the legal problems of land inheritance and the seeming inability for people to ever work this all out amongst themselves as being one of the most desirable points of the introduction of some of the Abramic religions, when they first appeared, as rules were laid out of who could inherit (some rules more effective than others, some quite ruinous in fact) which provided a framework in perpetuity (but on the other hand, with all children being considered legitimate in some instances, i.e. the children of concubines, this produced the problem of “all children” being in competition for the single title or, in turn, a vast spread of land, i.e. a Kingdom, being broken apart “to make it all fair”: this did not differ in form from, say, Imperial China to the late Ottoman court whilst the European Monarchies to their credit, somewhat, temporarily solved the matter by the allocation of specific titles to be given to the first born, second born, third born, etc., and then bouncing back to the Monarch upon the death of that Duke to be allocated again – although some would say this is a feeble manner by which to govern large polities it differs not very much from the essential ‘oversight’ duties over local governments as practiced in the Roman Principate rather than direct-governorship over those provinces themselves).
The tribal influence in real terms upon children cannot be understated in its superior effects upon the character and long-term capacity of the children themselves (when compared to others); I have some experience in my own up-bringing with this and really the outcome (again: compared to the infantilism, i.e. arrested development, you will almost always find in the nuclear family type, which we might easily compare to factory farmed within four walls and a hen-pecking parental authority vs. free range) is a quite more matured and capable disposition (call it “street smarts” if you like; they follow what actually works rather than what is ‘pretended to them’ to work, which is typically nothing more than the parents own whimsical desires of the moment) amongst all the children when they are simply freed up from the poor influence of an unfit parent even without the good influence of a more fit parent of which, then, the fit parent itself could be determined to be largely superfluous, as: of their own accord they learn amongst themselves and become naturally fortified against being instructed into error by a witless or ill-inclined adult, whereas a child stuck under the thumb of a witless ‘parent’ has no means to disobey that witless parent without facing severe punishments and so there the child is sculpted into a helpless fool, later embittered in life and at the tender mercy of their peers, as: even as they might innately know-better (than to do the foolish thing their parent demands they do) they are forced nevertheless, either physically punished or emotionally coerced, into adopting the ‘silly walk’ and ‘dress’ of the witless parent, which is to say: they are forced into conforming toward the cultural idealism determined by the parent with no thought whatsoever for the practicalities of life, e.g. the matter of “how will my child earn a living” is addressed neither by parenting nor by schools thus begrudgingly selling themselves auction block of the labour market turns out to be the only method, whether they were deluded into thinking that their aspirations to be a professional athlete or an astronaut were entertained and encouraged for them at the expense of informing them about any other means of paying the rent or not.
I should say here that when I say “familial-tribal unit” I am broadly referring to any number of groupings, in whatsoever local forms they may take shape, but that the decisive factor, most chiefly, will be a large extended family network of which, if it ever needed to pool its resource together, would constitute a decent size force in land, resource production and manpower – but chiefly it is the possession of land which enables everything else:
More ideally, to my mind, it would resemble (or be very close in composition to) that Roman ‘Familia’ (the origin of the word ‘Family’ in our English) where a fairly large blood family of at least five generations inhabited in and around the same House or group of Houses (see: Palace, Villa and Manor Economy), with servants and adoptees and associates (business partners) likewise being considered as extended kin; altogether forming, as it were, a little nationality. In the sense of ‘Nationality’ it is, it ought be said, more a return to how we actually were prior to the ‘naming conventions’ of the 1700’s or so where the stupid surnames made up on the spot of many Europeans were forced into Law over what would have originally been clan and tribal identities and from which there came that fake sense of disparate ‘Nationality’ (i.e. cut off from tribe and forced into atomization; identity through a very small family unit alone) from which the misnomer of ‘Race’ would be made-up to lend credibility to. In many ways a great deal of the urbane ‘neurosis’, let’s call it, stems really from this absence of ‘true tribe’ with it having been eradicated either by the fecklessness of urban societies; societies of strangers and thieves, and also more directly via those religions which pretend to fill the void of ‘true tribe’ with their witless rituals and effete pretences – things which are a wet-blanket over true fellowship wrought in such a manner as comes in all reality perfectly naturally the moment the screws holding foolishness in place are undone and cast away – and really here, when we stack these observations together one upon the other, we are really speaking of a sound and strong society certainly immune to the shallow perversity created by denialism toward the basic mechanics of the human body – in addition to any other considerations which follow from that.

THE OVERALL INFLUENCE (OR LACK THEREOF) OF A TRIBAL-FAMILIAL UNIT

It must be considered quite seriously by the reader as to the overall influence, or lack thereof, of a tribal-familial unit as to what fills its place in the education of people otherwise and, as I began this text by considering for myself, how much of the ‘dysfunctionality’ can be attributed to the “lack thereof”.
Along with the cultural instance on sexual immaturity as to produce the consequence of delaying and drawing out for decades a fetish of normal sexuality which ought naturally be done with by a person after reaching the age, say, of maybe seventeen, there is the greater point which I am trying to relay here in this text of how many other aspects of ‘bad culture’ are singularly anchored to and thusly totally dependent upon that sexual immaturity – that is: we would be hard-pressed to imagine how really many of the pernicious scenarios in our contemporary society would even arise if that foundation stone of ‘sexual immaturity’ were removed from the equation:
For instance, how much of a ‘relationship’ is spent and sculpted (either by the Man or the Woman or both) on jealously and worry of the other ending the relationship for having found another person or another means to fulfil their sexual gratification? If a ‘relationship’ is based upon, let’s call this, “mutual masturbation” then at the heart of that is sexual immaturity of the mental age of maybe fourteen years whereupon a person has been sort of coaxed into dependency for orgasm on a third party; they are fraught and fearful that this should be taken away from them – it being so vital as like a mechanical necessity for either sex – that the entire content of their ‘relationship’ revolves around it; seeking it, coaxing it, demanding it, guarding it from be lost, and so on, of which I think it is not exaggeration to say that such concerns constitute 100% of the verbal interaction in such a ‘couple’; either outright or in the back of the mind so as to reinterpret all scenarios and verbal expressions as being related to that end-goal of maintaining the “mutual masturbation”.
Simply put this ‘relationship’, then, revolves around twenty minutes of sexual activity in a day – if that much (or even if every day), yet dominates the entirety of the mind; that is: the entirety of the ‘relationship’, when this action itself is something that a servant or a slave or a prostitute would be used for in many societies, with the ‘content’ of the marriage, say, being concerned more with running the business of a Household or concerned with procreation to produce legitimate children to inherit the business, the title, the land, whatever. My point here is that neither Man nor Woman are elevated or their dignity improved, somehow, by this absence of sexual maturity but rather that both are reduced; i.e. greatly lowered, to the cognitive and social standing of the “servant, slave, prostitute,” in that as far as they think of and conceptualize themselves as part of a Household at all it is singularly the concern with simple sexual acts which dominate their interpersonal interactions and their ideas about their own self; it is their ‘social currency’.
If this seems alien – I mean my observation on this – consider how much neurosis goes on in the daily grooming rituals of Women or those sad excuses for Men who “lift weights but cannot fight” (not to mention the ease at which a thin muscular physique bleeds out at the slightest of puncture wounds, see: Roman Gladiator training), i.e. whose only concern is that of admiring their own bodies in a mirror, this being intellectually identical to young Women. Is this not the mentally of a slave? If so, even if we shy away from saying it plainly, then we must ask “what forms the mentality of a slave (i.e. where does it come from)” – in the above equation a slave in a Household is more like an object fulfilling a function than He or She is a person with any autonomy (well, obviously there is no autonomy for a slave) so it is almost to be expected that in such an environment that the intellectual trajectory of an object-person goes away from externalities and becomes entirely absorbed with self-presentation and equates their social status from that, and if groups of such persons will set this to be the common culture; deriving status in that manner among themselves – although still these are slaves possessing no ‘status’ to speak of, as being object-people. This is evidenced also in victims of sexual abuse or those, in general, suffering at the hands of third parties whose autonomy is in some way or another restricted; that their singular focus becomes that of sexuality as like depression is “rage turned inward”, thus too it seems for sexual infantilism.
I cannot pass up this subject without mentioning a series of interviews describing, a thing quite novel to me, the notion of American Christian ‘Purity Culture’ from the point of view of those heavily indoctrinated into that; instilled with Catholic levels of guilt over the normal function of the body, who have then left their small churches or megachurches, or whatever, and spoken plainly about the mentality of those inside of it as relating to sexuality. It is a thing I think long suspected but seldom expressed that, as it was described, the mentality of such persons is that they are “horny all the time” due to the relentless guilt inculcated into them; that due to denialism of sexuality their ordinary sexual impulses are magnified to an incredible degree and that, consequentially, their entire being is animated by repressed sexuality so that their thoughts are ‘impure’ all the time whilst verbally they express strong denialism and shame over the thing. I think this is no real difference to any such religious malinstruction; be it Muslim, Jewish or Christian, in that the perpetual infantilism of their surrounding society stems first of all from their own bedrock religious culture (i.e. whatever religion which is at odds with the human body, etc.) were due to such ‘culture’ they never really get over, say, an early adolescent view of sexuality where they are driven entirely by it and never learn to overcome it, no pun intended, but utterly unrealized – which would take them leaving their religion – is that this process demonstrably brings out the absolute worst in their character and disposition with the process itself being the promulgation ‘of’ those very “Viceful thoughts ” that they claim to be “at War with in the world”, in other words: it is just they themselves who, for example, look at a young teenage girl (or god help us, a small boy) and thinks all manner of sexual rapacity – and that this animates them politically to campaign for restrictive legislation to be put into Law to police “all society” as if “all society” existed at their low level is an incredible thing to consider. But I do not think their broader societies are any exception to this, rather point here is that their broader societies are comprised of persons exactly like them; that the Christian or the Jew driven by a lifetimes shaming over their normal sexuality adopt, in turn, the most depraved expressions ‘of’ sexuality as a self-affirmation; that is: the extreme self-identification with a simple sexual action, for example, came to literally define a persons personality in such places to the point that (Americans anyway) seriously put out the notion during the late 1990’s and 2000’s that a fleeting sexual act 1) defines a persons entire character, and 2) it is also inborn, e.g. as like to say that whether you prefer this or that on the menu at a restaurant is something determined genetically; this is utterly stupid and utterly, in my opinion, a consequence of society which has not wanted to evolve beyond the ‘sexual immaturity’ of which physiologically seems to occupy a very small window of the middle to late teens and of which repression during those ages quite demonstrably creates madness and retardation – I mean that if their culture did not peripherally do this to them then the manner by which swathes of their cultural-historical institutions do this to them ‘outright’ by inculcation into this process in particular certainly does it to them, and merely it is the unwillingness to fully condemn these Religions and relegate these influences to the dustbin which keeps the entire thing ticking along with “just enough” of the population bent out of shape by it to present those same persons, seemingly confused as to where they came from, lumbering through the broader society and serving as examples of lunacy and degeneracy.
In short - and I may as well add this here also, the aim to abstain for a while from sexuality was a custom introduced by the Ancient Romans and was designed to heighten sexual pleasure; in effect, then, foreign barbarians coming to this culture much later on with nobody to really explain it to them ended up unwittingly engaging in what they would probably have recognized as ‘sex magic’ whereupon the denial of their own mechanical sexual function was ‘abstained’ by them; i.e. they saw the value in holding off on doing drugs or having sex for a while, – but they did not understand what the effect or the outcome of that was ‘intended’ to be in that one would abstain specifically ‘to’ heighten the senses toward that pleasure; and this is evidenced chiefly in the Lunar Orgies and the Fast/s of Ceres. Interestingly, Jesus himself in (i think the Gospel of Thomas?) mentions to his followers that “they will hate him for what he says now,” and that he says that “fasting brings out all the worst in them” – in other words, engaging in periodic abstinence will turn them all horny. Knowing this from a relatively early age it was no surprise to me at all why celibate priests ended up diddling children or member of their own congregation or why the most outwardly pious zealots proved to be the most morally weak people to be found as even with the most ‘clean’ example, let’s say, of a person who has never drank wine, for example, they have not ‘overcome’ that thing but have rather avoided ever experiencing that thing so that it will always be a novel temptation to them of which they will have no understanding of and which they can be leveraged by in various ways primarily due to their ignorance of which ‘experience itself’ would otherwise render them far more fortified against:
A good example here is the ‘pot scare’ of the early 1930’s in America when it was seriously believed by a wholly ignorant chunk of the urbane voting public that smoking cannabis (and drinking alcohol, for that matter) would turn a person into a serial killer, this is totally bizarre to us now, but notice that this was the same society whose moral standard was that “a table leg” should not be uncovered because it reminded them of a Womans bare leg – although here we might better understand why they were so preoccupied by thoughts like that (I think very seriously in their heightened state of perpetual arousal any little thing would send them to buggery of a farmyard creature)! Hilarious. But – notice also that this was the same society which was engaging in some of the most casually egregious inhumane criminality that history had ever seen, as if they ‘were’ high on narcotics and their rational senses dulled; I do not mean here to bring American notions of ‘Race’ into this as to be seen to ‘condemn Black Slavery’ in the fashion of my own day (although we mentioned family-tribe as a better form of so-called nationality earlier) but the ghastly images of actual Country Fairs where smiling families with children by their knees would pose for crude photographs with the charcoaled or bloated rotting carcass of a burned or lynched Man is beyond my ability to play-down or normalize. I mean here to say, that: far from the pretense of ‘clean mindedness’ of such persons about themselves that we find these same persons are the filthiest and most depraved characters around, being those few persons who walk amongst us who are actually capable of doing those inhumane things (again, see: Banality of Evil) as would be unthinkable to a person of normal rational healthy conscience. We might connect this, also, to the historical BDSM extravaganzas which took place in the Christian monasteries and public squares for many centuries where young Women were sexually tortured by celibate clergymen as to recognize how deep and quick a plunge it is from a person or their culture going from the denial of normal healthy sexuality into the kettled and sadistic gore fetish of outright murder.
It is always worth reminding the reader who wishes to minimize these more egregious aspects of the subject (as rape is still rampant among the clergy); which are consequential of sexual immaturity, that it was not ‘reason and rationality’ per se that stamped this out from European society but soldiers kicking in the doors of such Churches, Town Halls and Houses with muskets, rifles, long knives and grape-shot and physically eradicating the perpetrators and their willing congregations from America and France for the practice itself of sexually torturing a Woman and then burning the evidence on the fake pretexts of obviously made-up accusations of “she turned me into a frog” to actually be ended. That is to say that the ‘mentality’ and ‘culture’ which provided the framework for such inhumane activities was never formally realized or educated-out of a people, so to find it lingers along into contemporary times; animating the otherwise dormant farmyard animal-like character of such persons “like powers of evil”, is not surprising to me in the least. What was more surprising to me is that as so much of these religions are so obviously outright ‘evil’ that more persons do not speak of the intricacies of the things in such necessary detail these more ‘egregious’ cases would qualify, and then to spool back to discover the cause of every evil action in the mentality of every perpetrator – generally speaking, for instance, it will be a character with a disposition of infantilism and perhaps this is more easy to understand without needing to connect it to sexual immaturity though, to my mind, these are not distinct enough to warrant any separation; as: infantilism is always going to be immaturity and immaturity is always going to run concurrent with a lack of adult intellectual development where a mature and experienced view of a thing, sexuality in this case, has likely been within the powers of a person to have gleaned naturally through experiences – in which case there would be no argument with anything I say here, or of which such experiences have been prevented by external powers from being gleaned by the person in question; in which case they remain ‘as if’ they were fourteen years old with the allure of mysterious unknown sex acts utterly dominating their consciousness at all times and yet physically being thirty, forty, fifty years old – well past the age (certainly physiologically) where they should have gotten it all out of their system but of which they have not, chiefly because their experiences have been rather dull and monotone and so much social currency has been valued by it ‘being’ dull and monotone, e.g. monogamy, legal repercussions binding two people in place, the atomized kettling nature of the disconnected nuclear family unit, living amongst strangers in large cities where it not so simple as just going topless to change the local culture, control through the selective denial of the sex act itself (as William Reich and Esther Vilar both write on), the sexualisation of young people by adults, the accidental ‘perversity’ (in the real meaning of the word) of unfulfilled (or poorly fulfilled, or repressed altogether) sexuality and its effects on the brain and society, and so on and so on.
I am always inclined to think when considering this subject, and I may as well end this text in conclusion with this recurrent thought of mine, that ‘sexual perversion’ really begins in the mind of ourselves as young teenagers when the normal human body is leeringly presented to us as being something ‘illicit’, e.g. the breasts of Women are concealed in our society and so due to ‘hiding them away’ they become objects of mystery and fetish which they otherwise are not. I do not think this is deliberate reverse psychology (as god help us few enough people even understand the concept to understand what they do inadvertently) but it produces the same consequence of reverse psychology, whereupon quite arbitrarily a certain piece of the body, say, an ankle, is all of a sudden declared by a mad Adult to be “evil, sinful, lustful, of the devil,” when no such notion existed in the minds of people otherwise, as then: their natural curiosity is piqued by this imposition and so they develop a perversion dervied in chief part – as a sense of lewd pleasure – from bucking the arbitrary nonsensical imposition forced upon them by that dictate of which such a scenario never would have had cause to occur if not for that imposition having created it. I feel that this ‘perversion’ (again, in the real meaning of that word) stands in the way of a fully realized and fully pursued sense of actual sexuality and, from it, of a more resonant concordance between Men and Women whose interactions are otherwise thrown off balance by such impositions as they are dragged back down to sexual immaturity all the time; or into fear and jealously etc., as like a dozen avenues are presented in any conversation and virtually of them are strewn with piss, vomit and polyfoam which had no reason to be put there in the first place, or more accurately: it was put there through the carelessness of an atomized and witless peoples who knew no better than to do this to themselves but of which a familial-tribal unit would have drummed out of them quick sharp if for the actuality of nothing else than “we are all in this together” being something that is tangibly true and not merely shallow political rhetoric when it is said of a tribe vs. when it is said of a state polity comprised of countless strangers.

2024.06.09 15:59 ad-undeterminam I don't want to be an adult.

I'm 22, I know I have to.
Working is fine, I already got à job in a small company.
Administrative shit are somewhat OK, I get them done at some point no matter how long it takes.
But dealing with my health ? Recognizing that it matters ?
Making friends my age ? Not playing hide and seek or tag anymore ? Having to learn how to drive a car instead of a bicycle ?
All that is kinda... not happening ? I feat those things, they mark truly being adult to me. I don't want to.
But at the same time clinging to this weird stage of not wanting to be an adult at the same time as not being a kid anymore ? That just isn't working, it's making me miserable.
But I find no fun in relationship with people my age, no hide and seek, no tag, nothing... Just "how's your job ?" "How's the appartement you're renting" "where did you go on vacation last sommer" all that siting down, eating or drinking or both. Yup the freaking epitomy of fun.
Also I dunno why driving a car to me feels like the forbidden thing I can't do. It just feels like adulthood in every way. And I hate that.getying pissed at others cause "they didn't follow the rules, they put everyone in danger" having the responsability of à multi thousand dollar objectif in your hand everywhere you go, a phone is already enought of a bother and it's only a few hundred buck generally.
The only moment when i'm having fun truly with others is with my young cousins, playing tag or hide and seek.
I want friends with whom I could explore the city, go to restricted areas, take risk swiming in the sea at night or cycling way to fast down the city... I'm an adult, I know all that is dangerous and wrong and I should'nt do it. Still, I want to.
I don't know what i'm supposed to do to feel happy when i'm on my free time, not working, not with my boyfriend, just lonely. I don't know how to find a community, a group I can fit in.

Chapter 11

Congratulations! You have unlocked the skill: [Meditation]!
Meditation – Level 1
Type: Passive
Effect: This basic meditation technique focuses on bringing your awareness to the present moment. By calming your thoughts and observing your breath, you create a state of inner peace that fosters the natural restoration of your mana. It’s a simple practice that can be maintained throughout the day, even while traveling or performing light tasks. However, that requires a higher level of the skill. Connections: [Meditation] has formed Connections with [Magic Sensitivity] and [Magic Perception], enhancing all three skills’ effects.
A smile spread across Ethan’s face. He continued his routine like usual, albeit with one addition: daily meditation. It took some time, but slowly—ever so slowly—the dull aches behind his eyes receded, replaced by a refreshing coolness as his mana regeneration speed increased. Meditation indeed helped.
[Meditation] — Lvl 1 -> Lvl 2!
[Magic Sensitivity] — Lvl 1 -> Lvl 2!
[Magic Perception] — Lvl 1 -> Lvl 2!
“Finally!”
Unexpected bonuses! Ethan chuckled. It seemed even seemingly basic skills could have hidden relations. He closed his eyes once more. He had a feeling this was just the beginning.
Time passed, and he continued making rune motes. But a new kind of worry furrowed his brow. The novelty of handcrafted soap had its limits. The initial batch was sent to potential investors, nobles, merchants, et cetera—and it had indeed vanished like suds in a rainstorm. He’d even managed to train a couple of the more eager servants, turning them into his first, albeit slightly nervous, soap-makers. But scaling things up? That presented a whole new bar (pun entirely intended) of challenges.
First, there was the money issue. His pockets were starting to feel empty. Expanding his operation meant serious investment, something he could only take so far.
Investors. Ethan grimaced. The word conjured images of stuffy suits picking apart his plans with a practiced sneer. He shuddered. Funding everything himself was a pipe dream. He needed someone to believe in his vision, a knight in shining armor wielding a hefty bag of gold.
But the bigger challenge, the one that kept him up at night, was the production line. Hand-making was a labor of love, not large-scale commerce. He wanted a streamlined process—bubbling vats and efficient filling. Factories, of course, were out of the question. But the principles could be adapted, scaled down for his humble little workshop.
Large, sturdy vats, fire-resistant, and big enough to hold gallons of bubbling lye solution, were a must. Then came the pouring—tedious and time-consuming by hand but he would find a solution somehow. Safety, of course, was a large concern in his mind. Lye was a fickle thing. He needed proper ventilation systems, thick gloves for handling the caustic solution, and clear safety protocols practically drilled into his fledgling soap-making team. Maintaining quality was another worry. With increased volume, ensuring each bar possessed the same level of perfection became a concern.
Not to mention delays. Delays—that word was the entrepreneur’s nightmare. Machines breaking down, surprise ingredient shortages, unexpected problems in the production line… Ethan knew they were inevitable. He needed a buffer—a reserve of supplies and a maintenance plan to weather the inevitable storms. It was hardly rocket science, but the logistics of it all made his head spin.
Regardless, Ethan worked on the investor pitch, the design for the assembly line, the contingencies for delays—and with each minute, they solidified.
There’s so much to do...
***
Ethan ran a hand through his hair, standing inside the makeshift workshop they’d made to produce more soap. The latest batch of soap sat on the wooden table—smooth, white ovals that lathered luxuriously and left a hint of calming fragrance. The results were undeniable. Now, he had quite the amount of soap made already; it was time to get his creation into the hands of those who needed it most.
Selling within the barony was the easiest option. He could hire someone to hawk his wares at the market, catch the eye of housewives in need. But Holden was small, and the potential customer pool was limited. Not to mention folks knew him, and they didn’t trust him. Regardless, a well-placed stall at the weekly market would likely do the trick—meager returns, however, given that majority of the people were poor. Thankfully, they could afford it.
Ethan needed to be bold, however. The grimy hands of miners in neighboring Corinth, and the mud-caked travelers passing through the bustling border town of Westford—they all needed to experience the excellent product he’d made. Catching the eyes of a noble or two would be even better. Spreading the word beyond Holden presented a problem.
Trade fairs, perhaps. Grand events held a few times a year, attracting merchants from far and wide. The thought of securing a stall at the Westford fair, a place that would be teeming with potential buyers—and the biggest Bordertown that could arguably be called a city—was indeed enticing. But that would require waiting.
Nah, can’t wait. I need money. Merchants themselves would be it. Partnering with a reliable merchant who frequented the border towns could be a more strategic approach. He’d provide the soap, the merchant would handle the transportation and distribution, sharing the profits. But finding such a partner would be rather hard considering his reputation with the Merchants Guild...
Ethan sighed. He needed a plan that would push his soap beyond Holden and into the wider world. I should contact some of Theo’s friends...
Thinking of those “friends” that were indeed just like Theo if not worse, Ethan weighed his options, but settled for it regardless. He had no choice.
“Excellent work, everyone,” Ethan praised the workers, then walked outside where he boarded his carriage. Sitting down, Ethan looked at Roland.
“Roland. Send a letter to Hector asking if we could arrange a meeting,” Ethan ordered. “If he isn’t willing, contact every merchant of worth in Holden—contact the Merchants Guild, they will likely ignore me, given my reputation; however, even if one of them agrees to come, arrange a meeting. I will not be taking a bad deal, but we need to try anyway. Surely not all of them hate my guts...”
Roland looked doubtful of that possibility. Ethan coughed.
“As you wish, my lord.”
...
The carriage was going through the town to his manor when Ethan received a letter from Jack—through one of his undead ravens—regarding the base spell’s situation. The man had been using himself as the nexus, and the spell was working, analyzing the blight-organism’s patterns, recording them, sending them back to the nexus (Jack), and then those instructions would be sent to the base spell in every soap. The process was costing the man quite some mana, and he’d been requesting a mana crystal so he could make it the nexus instead of himself.
Mana crystals were unique, naturally forming gemstones that were imbued with magical properties They formed in regions with a high concentration of mana, often in places where the veil between the physical and magical realms was thin. These regions typically formed deep underground, in caves or ancient ruins, making them difficult to access. The formation of a mana crystal itself a slow process. Over centuries, the ambient mana in these regions coalesces and crystallizes, forming these precious gemstones. The size, purity, and power of a mana crystal depend on the concentration of mana in the area and the length of time it has had to form.
Procuring mana crystals was a dangerous and costly endeavor because it required skilled miners and mages to safely extract the crystals without damaging them or causing magical backlash—it could even be called magical cancer. Worse yet, they could explode. Thus, all the mana crystal areas were akin to area-51 back on Earth. Heavily secured, well-guarded, with possibly several types of magical alarms and defenses to detect intruders, and these mines were watched very, very closely by whoever could. Once extracted, the crystals must be carefully handled and stored to prevent their magical energy from dissipating. Due to their rarity, power, and the difficulty in procuring them, mana crystals were highly valuable. Often used in powerful spells, magical research, and as a power source for magical devices.
The flow of Mana Crystals into the market is strictly controlled due to their potential for misuse—though, if Ethan was being true to himself, it was most likely so the crystals could be sold at exorbitant prices. Though, the “official” reasoning by the mining guilds was that in the wrong hands, a mana crystal could be used to fuel destructive spells or create forbidden magical artifacts. As such, governments and guilds often regulated their sale and distribution, requiring permits and licenses for their purchase and use.
That’s why it’s quite understandable that a mana crystal would be the best nexus. Thinking so, Ethan rubbed his chin. However, mana crystals are expensive...
Ethan wrote back to Jack, penning his concerns and reassuring Jack that he would try to get his hands on a mana crystal as soon as possible. However, it would take time as they’re hard to come by. Not to mention, they cost a hefty sum, and Ethan lacked money at the moment. I need a way to make it absolutely certain that Hector will agree to be an investor. I also need people in the Merchants Guild backing me up—
As he was writing to Jack, Ethan suddenly had an idea. He paused, blinking, staring at the raven. Hmmm. I wonder if I can use these little guys to gather dirt on nobles. The morality of doing such a thing was questionable, and he would rather not do it, but he was in a world that required such actions if he wanted to survive.
Ethan leaned back into the soft backrest inside the carriage, a pensive look on his face as his mind raced with possibilities. He knew the noble houses of the kingdom engaged in all manner of unsavory dealings—corruption, bribery, smuggling, tax evasion on a grand scale, illegal trade in magical artifacts, forced labor in hidden mines, pregnant prostitutes, bastard sons and daughters, and even human trafficking. Heck, he was sure many secretly engaged in trafficking exotic Beastkin from the other continent. A cold disgust settled in Ethan’s stomach. Some Noblewomen with harems of human-looking Beastkin for their amusement. Men who lusted after feline Beastkin, keeping them chained and collared, using their enhanced senses for perverse pleasures. Sadists, the entire lot of them.
The children of these unions were another layer of tragedy. Then there were the barbaric collectors, humans who craved the immense strength of the Minotaurs, using them as gladiatorial entertainment or worse, in underground fighting rings where blood painted the cobblestones—heck, he was sure many were breeding monstrous Chimera for use in their personal fighting ring. The Beastkin weren’t livestock, they were sentient beings, their cultures and traditions as rich and varied as any human kingdom. Yet, here, in the supposed bastion of civilization, they were nothing more than exotic commodities to fuel the insatiable desires of some of the elite.
Lucianos Solarian IV, the Emperor, had outlawed Beastkin trafficking decades ago, and the punishment for defiance was a brutal lesson etched in blood. The first year after Beastkin slavery and trafficking were outlawed was etched into history.
Public execution wasn’t harsh enough. Traffickers were broken first—physically and mentally. Men and women alike. Weeks of torture were standard, designed to make them not only regret their crimes but also serve as a terrifying public reminder of the Emperor’s wrath. Ethan shuddered. He’d heard about men and women being flayed alive, their screams echoing through the city squares. They were forced to march through the city squares, stripped of their finery and any magical glamours that masked their appearance, stoned. Their crimes were announced to the jeering crowds, their faces branded with a mark signifying their depravity. They were then forced into hard labor, their bodies broken and their vanity shattered.
Surely, the Emperor was no kind man, and the message was clear: Beastkin were not slaves, not pets, not trophies. They were sentient beings deserving of respect, and the Emperor would tolerate no violation of their rights. Theodore’s father was the same, Obsidian was one of the better Kingdoms under the Empire. Heck, it could be said to be the best.
However, just like always, people still participated in sick behavior. Not everyone, to be fair. But a minority, still. And given how large the Solaris Empire was—and not to mention the other Empires that were worse than Solaris—there were bound to be dark secrets that they would do anything to keep buried. It was just how things were, and Ethan doubted it would ever end (the continent of Beastkin wasn’t any better; humans were the ones exotic there).
Thus, Jack’s undead ravens could be the perfect spies, slipping into noble manors and gatherings unnoticed, their beady eyes and keen senses recording every sordid detail. With enough incriminating evidence, he could blackmail these nobles into supporting his business ventures, ensuring they backed his proposals and used their influence to aid the common folk. Ethan would feel no remorse, regret, or apprehension for doing. The thought of wielding such leverage would give him a significant advantage when he inevitably threw his hat into the political arena. He refused to be a mere pawn, manipulated by those with wealth and status.
This way, he could control the game from the start.
However, a nagging voice in the back of his mind cautioned him. Using necromantic summons for espionage was hardly an original idea. Surely, some of the more paranoid nobles would have measures in place to detect and counter such tactics. He would need to tread carefully, lest the ravens be discovered and his plans unraveled before they began.
Still, the potential rewards outweighed the risks. With careful planning and execution, he could amass a wealth of compromising information, giving him the power to shape the kingdom’s policies for the betterment of its people. It was an ambitious gambit, but one he felt was worth pursuing despite the moral wound he’d receive from doing it.
Then, when the time is right—I can report them to the Emperor.
Ethan’s gaze drifted back to the raven, its lifeless eyes seeming to bore into him.
A wry smile tugged at his lips. Let’s see what secrets you can uncover for me, my little friend. Thinking so, he added a line saying that he would like to meet Jack sometime and talk about a “business opportunity”—after all, talking about such illegal activities that he was thinking of doing wouldn’t be wise over a letter.
...
A pleasant surprise awaited Ethan in his manor. A middle-aged man in simple attire paced within the living room. He had light, close-cut brown hair and brown skin. The stranger had sharp features, a salt-and-pepper beard, and a kind face that seemed easy on the eyes. Upon seeing Ethan, the man’s features stretched into a deeper smile as he bowed.
“Lord Theodore. I am Derrick. My apologies for the unscheduled visit.”
“It’s alright. I’m not sure if we have met before, Sir Derrick,” Ethan responded, glancing at Roland who appeared to have recognized the man. Roland gave Ethan a look that said I know this man, and he’s here for business.
“Indeed, we haven’t, my lord. I am Derrick, and I used to be a member of the Red Tower. I come here to talk about introductory books that you might interested in—and a far better deal that could benefit the both of us.”
Ethan raised an eyebrow, then smiled.

2024.06.09 10:12 VictorNetherlands Looking for locations/markets to experience real day-to-day Chinese citylife!

Hi, I am currently booking my second trip to China for the end of June/beginning of July. Since I have already seen most of the tourist attractions, the goal of this trip is to go around the big cities with my camera to enjoy Chinese city life and markets.
If anyone has any tips on nice local streets, markets, etc. to avoid the tourists and experience more of the real day-to-day Chinese life, then I would love to hear them! And if you know any vintage/antique shops or coffee stops, let me know as well :)
My trip will include the following cities: Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Beijing.

Prompt: Imagine a dystopian world where an oppressive government has successfully erased all forms of personal identity and history. In this society, individuals are assigned generic roles and are forbidden from expressing their unique thoughts, emotions, or experiences. Write a short story or reflective essay exploring the life of a character who discovers a hidden underground community that encourages self-expression and reignites the importance of personal narratives.
In your response, consider the following:
  1. Character and World Building:
    • Describe the protagonist's background, their assigned role, and their initial perception of the oppressive world they inhabit.
    • Develop the hidden underground community, including its purpose, structure, and the means through which it safeguards personal stories.
    • Create a contrast between the protagonist's initial world and the underground community, highlighting the impact of personal narratives on shaping identity and resisting oppression.
  2. Plot Analysis:
    • Outline the protagonist's journey of discovery, including their initial skepticism, the influential encounters they have within the underground community, and the personal sacrifices they make to preserve their identity.
    • Explore the challenges and conflicts faced by the protagonist, both externally (e.g., encounters with government authorities) and internally (e.g., the struggle to confront their identity).
  3. Deep Introspection:
    • Prompt the protagonist to reflect deeply on the uncomfortable subjects that the government's erasure of personal narratives seeks to suppress. These could include topics such as individuality, memory, trauma, and the power of storytelling as a tool for empathy and resistance.
    • Encourage the protagonist to evolve their thoughts and perceptions throughout the narrative, considering the consequences of silence and the potential for personal growth through self-expression and sharing.
  4. Requirements for Responses:
    • Conduct research to explore real-world examples of societies that suppress personal narratives or attempt to erase collective memory.
  5. Prompt: In a post-apocalyptic world, a devastating pandemic has wiped out most of humanity. The survivors are forced to live in isolated communities, each with its own set of strict rules and customs. Write a short story or reflective essay exploring the life of a character who questions the existing order and embarks on a journey to unite these fragmented communities. Consider the role of unity, diversity, and collaboration in rebuilding a shattered world.
  6. Prompt: Set in a future where advanced AI technology has permeated every aspect of society, write a story or reflective essay following a protagonist who begins to question the boundaries between human and machine. Delve into the ethical implications of human-AI relationships, the erosion of human emotions, and the potential consequences of blurring the line between artificial and genuine experiences.
  7. Prompt: Imagine a world where climate change and environmental degradation have irreversibly altered the planet. Write a story or reflective essay from the perspective of a character who is part of a group striving to restore balance and heal the damaged Earth. Explore the connections between personal responsibility, collective action, and the intersections of social and environmental justice.
  8. Prompt: Transport yourself to a society where strict social hierarchies are based on a person's genetic makeup. Write a short story or reflective essay following a character who challenges this system and advocates for equality and inclusivity. Examine the role of genetic determinism, discrimination, and the power of individual agency in reshaping social structures.
  9. Prompt: Imagine a world where art and creativity are considered illegal, seen as tools of subversion and chaos. Write a story or reflective essay from the perspective of an artist who risks everything to defy this oppressive regime and reclaim the power of artistic expression. Analyze the significance of art as a form of resistance, its ability to inspire change, and its impact on personal and societal transformation.

2024.06.09 04:09 MaguroSashimi8864 Which Capital City has a “COOL” name in their country’s language ?

A strange question, but I noticed that a lot of countries unfortunately just name their capital in boring ways in their language. Many times, it’s just “Capital” (like Tokyo is just “East Capital” and Beijing is “North Capital”) or just a repeat of their country name (Mexico City and Brazilia). Sometimes they just name it after their country’s founder, which is nice and patriotic but also kind of boring (Washington D.C)
I’m just curious if there are any country whose capital’s name actually has an interesting meaning — for example, how cool it would be if your capital is “City of Fire!” Or something like that? lol.

2024.06.09 03:03 Affectionate_Drag260 Tapping out from the nation and culture

This is a burner. I have created this account specifically for this one post and will probably never use this acc to post again. Some context is in order, but not that much, so as not to expose my identity.
I'm from Serbia (can't give out my city), and I have recently been applying to EU jobs for software engineering, with around 5 years of experience. I do this from time to time, as I don't enjoy life in my country very much and would occasionally daydream about going away.
Well, much to my surprise, a company from the Netherlands has since reached out to me, asking whether I'm available for a short call next week. The Netherlands - the land of my dreams. I applied via LinkedIn and checked the No box, on Do you have a legal work permit to work in the Netherlands , but still, they're interested in talking to me.
Now, this is literally a dream come true for me! The e-mail was filled with positive and encouraging language, which is a stark contrast to how people address one another over here. Should everything go well, I would gladly drop all the shit I have here, move there, work my ass off, and am even willing to renounce my citizenship for the possibility of getting the Dutch one. However, there's one teeny tiny problem.
A few months ago, I was caught with a joint and some small amount of weed by the police. However, compared to the European standards, our officers are much less democratically minded and much more prone to threats of and direct acts of violence. A regular intelligent guy might even say they're the scum of the Earth. And I would agree.
Anyways, the court hearing is supposed to take place next month, whereas the interview is taking place next week. I will have to piss in that fucking bottle for 3 goddamn months, which I find extremely humiliating.
While the company is willing to sponsor people from outside of the EU, and the fact that recreational use of weed is very legal in the Netherlands, this would still count as an unresolved governmental issue from my side, and I'm very scared of being denied a work permit, because it might set the course for the future - and I might even be denied a visa sometime in the future, no matter the country I apply for.
I have always despised my country and have had nothing good to say about it. Let alone now, when I've been given me a reason to passionately hate it. I have never had positive experiences with the government, even back in the day, when I hadn't done anything wrong, let alone now. I would love to give my country the middle finger and start my life with a clean slate.
However, even if everything went well, I'm afraid this unresolved matter with the state would haunt me for the rest of my life. Possession and usage of marijuana is considered a felony here, and there are no statutes of limitation for anything anymore here. I have no support for this career move, especially from my family, but I've never asked for it, in the first place - it's my life and I want to live it how I see fit.
Unfortunately, that isn't quite feasible in my current position. "Wrongthink" is forbidden here - and carries with it a hefty prison sentence. Especially if one disagrees with the state about the laws and implementation thereof. Not on paper, but in practice. They will just pin something on me that I didn't do and toss my ass in the can - ESPECIALLY BECAUSE I'M FROM A GOOD-STANDING FAMILY, WITH NO PRIOR HISTORY OF "WRONGDOING". I've seen and heard a lot about how they operate. Especially on the news. And they're being paraded as if they saved lives, and not ruined them. If I flee now, they will issue a warrant for my arrest, for whenever I come back home, which, I would, of course, never do. I don't give a flying fuck about my standing with the Serbian government - I care about how places that afford the future view me.
I will consult a lawyer on Monday, and see if I can make a plan of action, but my question for the Redditors is: does anyone have any advice on how to get out of this pickle? I mean, aside from consulting with an attorney?
This country is an open-air prison, and I'm ferociously looking for "an out".
Help me. Save me. Please.
