Chronic Post-Nasal Drip is disrupting my life. Please HELP!

2024.04.29 01:27 NoBobThatsBad Chronic Post-Nasal Drip is disrupting my life. Please HELP!

I wanted to say “ruining my life” but I’m trying (probably failing) not to be dramatic here. This ended up being longer than I intended but I thought it might be helpful info somehow. For background, I’m 25 years old. I have had nut allergies since I was about 2-3 years old. First it started with peanuts, then I became allergic to hazelnuts at about age 6, now I’m allergic to all nuts (anaphylactic type reaction). That’s about as far as food allergies go to my knowledge.
I have always had seasonal allergies and growing up I was prone to sinus infections and colds a little more than most people I knew, but otherwise I thought everything was mostly normal. Then when I was about 17 I started having what seemed like more than seasonal allergies. It was year round sinus irritation, itchy red eyes, runny nose type stuff. I went to my ENT, and he recommended allergy testing.
Did the environmental allergy testing back in 2019. They pricked me with I think 38 different samples and I was allergic to every…single…one. They told me I might have some flair ups at the prick/injection test sites for a couple days. I was getting flair ups for A MONTH. In any case, I started on the allergy shots. Did those for a few months until COVID hit and everything shut down and haven’t back on since although I’m scheduled to get retested next week so I can start back.
But since the start of the pandemic (to my knowledge I have never gotten COVID), I have started having daily, thick, viscous post-nasal drip nonstop. Every 20 minutes or less I’m hissing like a cat coughing up a hairball trying to hack up a wad of mucus. I’ve tried everything I can think of. Flonase, Nasacort, Azelastine, saline, hypertonic saline, Neti-pot, humidifier, air purifiers in the room, I’ve taken Zyrtec, Claritin, Xyzal, Allegra, Sudafed, Benedryl, Robitussin, Mucinex, Butterbur, NAC, NOTHING helps. There was an Advil Allergy Sinus medication in a green box that actually worked and I remember having to get it from the pharmacist, but my PCP doesn’t allow me to take Ibuprofen anymore because I have kidney hypoplasia and HBP so that’s out the question now.
I’ve even done the diet thing by process of elimination. Trying to see if it’s caused by wheat, gluten, dairy, sugar, meat, soy, alcohol, etc. Obviously diary and sugar will exacerbate any mucus-related issue but nothing appears to be the direct culprit.
On top of all of this, ever since I’ve been off of allergy shots back in early 2020, I’ve started developing weird fragrance allergies. I can’t use scented hand soap anymore or it’ll start making me sneeze, almost every hair product makes my eyes burn and my PND even worse even days after application where I can’t consciously smell it anymore. Even the fragrance free products cause eye burning and excessive PND.
In the last few years, a lot of clothes have also started developing strange scents that make my eyes burn, my skin itch, and won’t wash out. I tried soaking them in baking soda, vinegar, borax, peroxide, nothing gets it out. I’ll wash them, they’ll be fine for a day or two, then back to irritating my eyes and skin. And it’s only a certain items. Some of my clothes will take on the scent and some won’t and I can’t figure out why.
At this point I have no idea what to do. I thought maybe I have a deviated septum and that’s why my PND is so bad but my ENT says my septum, while deviated, is a very mild case and so he only wants me to do allergy therapy. And I’m game for that, but allergy therapy is a long process and I don’t know whether that will help with the fragrance sensitivities or the PND since I have PND even when my allergies aren’t flared up.
All of this has gotten me fed up, lost, confused, and depressed. I’m tired of waking up everyday spluttering and spending all day with a stinging feeling in the roof of my mouth, spitting up mucus every 10 minutes and not being able to do normal tasks because of some scent that might get on me and leave me suffering for hours or days. If anyone has some advice on what to do or if allergy therapy has helped with their PND or fragrance sensitivity please feel free to share because I am so over this.

2024.03.29 08:34 Monstermommy90 Dollar tree carries major medicines, you just have to know what to look for. Helpful for allergy sufferers.

Medicines at Dollar tree that are the same as their name brand counterparts- Zyrtec, Claritin, Dayquil sinus relief am and pm, mucinex, delsym, Immodium, Dulcolax, Afrin nasal spray, Benadryl, Tylenol, ibuprofen in children's liquid as well as adults, gas - X, Robitussin, Vicks vapor rub, etc. Same active ingredients, same doses. The only difference is the packaging and sometimes the amount of medicine you get. But Zyrtec allergy medicine, is 10mg Cetirizine at DT and is $1.25 for 10 pills vs. My local CVS green box allergy zyrtec knock off is $12 for 10 pills. Don't let big words intimidate you, know your active ingredients. Mucinex is Guaifenesin, Claritin is Loratidine, Benadryl is Diphenhydramine, Afrin nose spray is Oxymetazoline ,Delsym is dextromethorphan ,Dayquil and Nyquil, cold and flu or cold and sinus relief medicine is Phenylephrine, dextromethorphan and usually some type of antihistamine. Benadryl is Diphenhydramine,Immodium is Loperamide I could go on and on, but look up the name brand medicine you need's active ingredients. You can find a match in a lot of medications at dollar tree and will pay so much less than buying store brand pharmacy versions. The active ingredient is what makes it work, and its listed on the back of all medications.

2024.03.11 08:31 joenorwood77 Must Have List for Over the Counter OTC Medications for Cold and Flu Symptoms

I am a 46 year old male, who is trying to sort out which items to keep in the medicine cabinet, for whenever I have cold/flu symptoms in the future. Of course, no one wants to go out and buy anything when they are already sick, so I am trying to plan ahead.
I am trying to make a high-quality post to address cold and flu symptoms we all unfortunately experience throughout our lives. Even if you may feel that I am asking "stupid" questions, please consider that I am putting a lot of time and effort in to learn, while helping to share all of this with others. Some people may feel that I am making this all way too complicated. While this may be true, I still feel there is a lot for us to learn here. Thank you in advance to everyone who takes time to read this post, as well as those who also take time to respond.

I assume most people just have one or two pain relievers at home. However, is it worth having most or all of these?
After spending many hours of Google searches, here is my new understanding of the pros and cons of the main options.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol).
Ease pain and lower fever, but won’t reduce swelling or inflammation. Best for headache/fever, toothache, back pain, colds. Mild to moderate pain.
Least likely to cause an upset stomach. Be careful not to double dose with cold/flu medicine. Take every 4-6 hours.

Acetylsalicylic Acid (Aspirin, Bayer).
Reduce fever, pain, and inflammation. Best for headaches, toothaches, colds, fever. Mild to moderate pain.
Can be difficult on the stomach. Take every 4-6 hours.
Slows blood clots, lowers chance of heart attack/stroke.

Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) - Does it make sense to have both Ibuprofen and Advil?
Reduce fever, pain, and inflammation. Best for headaches, toothaches, back pain, muscle strains, colds. Mild to moderate pain
Can be difficult on the stomach. Take every 4-6 hours.

Naproxen (Aleve).
Reduce fever, pain, and inflammation. Best for headaches, toothaches, back pain, colds. Mild to moderate pain.
Can be worse on the stomach. Lasts longer in the body. Take every 8-12 hours.

In each of the four above categories, should a person just always go with the cheapest generic, or under which circumstances should a person pay more for a trusted name brand? It seems the active ingredients are the same for all generic vs name brands.

My takeaways from this, if my understanding is right is that
  1. Aleve, or a generic version, is a must have for when pain is expected to last longer (8-12 hours or more). Also helps with inflammation.
  2. Ibuprofen, or a generic version, is also a must have for pain with inflammation. This works faster than Aleve, but also does not last as long (4-8 hours).
  3. Tylenol, or a generic version, is a must have for pain without inflammation, or when you need something easier on your stomach.
  4. Aspirin/Beyer, or a generic version, is a must have for blood clots, and lowers the chance of a heart attack/stroke. If in good health, when do you know if you should take this daily?

Cough Suppressants are also important. When does a person know when to use each of these? I assume a person may not need to own all of these
Dextromethorphan (Delsym).
Dextromethorphan (Robitussin).
Menthol Cough Drops.
Vicks Vapor Rub.

Expectorants should also be considered.
Guaifenesin (Mucinex).

Decongestants.
Pseudoephedrine.

Nasal Decongestants.
Oxymetazoline (Afrin).

Antihistamines also help.
I personally prefer Cetirizine (Zyrtec) over Diphenhydramine (Benadryl), Loratadine (Claritin), and Fexofenadine (Allegra).

Anti-Inflammatory for sneezing, stuffy, runny, or itchy nose.
Fluticasone propionate (Flonase).

Sinus infection, allergies.
Neil-Med bottles and packets for nasal irrigation. I prefer this over Neti-Pot.

Sore throat.
Warm salt water gargle is highly suggested.
Which of the following three should also be kept on-hand?
-Herb Pharm Soothing Throat Spray Herbal Formula with Echinacea and Propolis.
-Chloraseptic Sore Throat Spray, Menthol.
-Propolis Throat Spray by Beekeeper's Naturals.

Can Dimenhydrinate (Dramamine) help to reduce nausea when sick, or is it really just for motion sickness?

Eyes - dry, red, itch, burn -
Genteal Tears Preservative Free Eye Drops.
Warm compress.

Many stomach symptoms; nausea, diarrhea, acid reflux.
Bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto Bismol).

Severe diarrhea.
Imodium AD.

Laxatives for Constipation.
Polyethylene glycol (MiraLax).

Is there anything that I am forgetting? Perhaps there is an item under a specific category that I should consider that I did not list? Or maybe I am forgetting about a symptom I should be ready for?Now I know things become even more complicated when considering cold/flu products that have a combination of ingredients. A main concern is that people can double their doses of pain relievers without even realizing it, as they do not read the labels of these products.
Do doctors and pharmacists usually just suggest buying the items above to treat specific symptoms, or are some of the products listed below also highly recommended under the right circumstances...

NyQuill.

TheraFlu.

Tylenol Cold and Flu Severe.

tldr; for each cold and flu symptom, which are the best products to own, and when should a person just go with the cheapest generic option rather than a trusted name brand?

2024.02.19 07:32 joenorwood77 Seeking Advice for Over the Counter Medications Long Term

Hopefully this post is acceptable, even though I am currently not sick. I am attempting to compile a list of all of the over the counter medications the average person should have for potential illness, allergies, and injuries. Hopefully someone in the medical field can help to answer the questions throughout, and to generally speak to what is and is not needed on this type of list. I am a single 46 year old male, but I hope this post and responses helps many people who should also stock up their medicine cabinet a bit. I also need to spend $300 in OTC money, or I lose it at the end of this month.
I spent hours searching online and piecing this list together. I am really trying to pay attention more to my health. I appreciate everyone who takes time to respond to any of this.
PAIN RELIEF - When do I use each and when do I avoid each?
Acetaminophen (Tylenol).
Acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin) - Does it matter if Bayer or are they all the same?
Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) - Does it make sense to have both Ibuprofen and Advil? If so, when to use and when to avoid each?
Naproxen (Aleve).
GI
Pepto Bismol - It seems best to use when many stomach symptoms like nausea, diarrhea, acid reflux.
Imodium AD - Used strictly for severe diarrhea when necessary. Should it be strictly Imodium AD, or just anything with Loperamide all the same?
Acid Reflux - Omeprazole (Prilosec). Unfortunately Pepcid does nothing for me.
COLD/FLU/SINUS INFECTIONS (in addition to pain relievers)
**I know an easy mistake is that people take a pain reliever in addition to a medicine like NyQuil, Theraflu, Tylenol Cold and Flu Severe, and not realizing they are exceeding their dose of pain relief.
Cough Medicine - Robitussin or does it matter which one? Should a person have a cough syrup or just pills for symptoms?
Cough Drops - Does it matter which ones? Some say Zinc helps, others say that is a myth.
Vapor Rub - I assume Vicks or any are all pretty much the same.
Decongestants (such as pseudoephedrine) - It seems to make sense to buy this separately, and also be aware if it is in other things taken while sick.
Anything else for sore throat in addition to salt water gargle, cough drops? Maybe throat spray?
Neilmed bottles and packets for nasal irrigation. I personally prefer this way over Neti-Pot.
Expectorant - Mucinex (Guaifenesin)
Cough Suppressant - Delsym
Afrin
SHOULD I EVEN BUY THERAFLU, NYQUIL OR TYLENOL COLD AND FLU SEVERE, OR BEST TO AVOID THOSE AND JUST TREAT EACH INDIVIDUAL SYMPTOM?
ALLERGIES
Antihistamines - diphenhydramine (Benadryl), Loratadine (Claritin), cetirizine (Zyrtec), and Fexofenadine (Allegra). I personally prefer Zyrtec for my allergies.
Anti-Itch Cream - Hydrocortisone 1% Cream or Calamine Lotion? When use each?
Anti-Fungal Cream - clotrimazole, miconazole, or butenafine hydrochloride. When use each?
Eye Drops - Genteal Tears Preservative Free - this is what my optometrist suggested to me for dry/red eyes.
Fluticasone propionate (Flonase).
Warm Compress - Optometrist suggested using this for eyes when red. Should this just be a warm washcloth, or should I buy something specific if I might need this regularly due to allergies?
MISC.
Cracks in heels - both Aquaphor Healing Ointment and Eucerin Cream together is suggested online.
Nausea (motion sickness) - Dramamine
Burn Cream - I assume all pretty much the same and some should come in a first aid kit.
Antibiotic or antibacterial ointment - Neosporin or Bacitracin. When use each?
Laxatives - Does it matter which one?
First Aid Kit (includes many things, some that may be already listed)
Rubbing Alcohol - Recently read that 70% is often better than 91% since it does not dry as fast?
Hydrogen Peroxide
Reading Glasses - My age is finally catching up to me.
Sunscreen SPF what is suggested now days?
Aloe Vera Gel
Oral care like toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, mouthwash is surprisingly covered with my plan.
Consider multi-vitamins?
Lotion
Carmex
Insect Repellant
Hand Sanitizer
Epsom Salt
Q-tips
For sore muscles or swelling - Hot Pad and Cold Pad. Any specific ones out there?
Anything else?

Is Theraflu Nighttime Pregnancy Safe - 😵‍💫❓
I'm 29 weeks and sick... I asked my doctor what I could take and this is the response. My doctor said Theraflu is good but didn't specify Day or Nighttime. I Google the active ingredients and didn't find any "hard" no's. Am I over thinking this? I took half a packet of the nighttime and now I'm worried, SMH.

2024.02.02 20:27 Ryn_Kimora5 Can MCAS make colds/viruses worse?

Hey all,
I'm in the process of getting diagnosed and learning about MCAS. It makes a lot of sense for my body and what I've been experiencing.
Over this last week, I've been feeling sicker and sicker, and I'm now at the point where I'm coughing so frequently and violently that I'm sitting in the bathroom, because I keep nearly throwing up.
Doc ran a test for a huge amount of viruses, and it all came back negative (COVID, RSV, flu, adenovirus, pneumonia, strep, etc.). I've been suspicious for a while that I have MCAS, but haven't found a provider to help me with it yet. My body is acting as though I have a severe viral infection, but all the viral tests are showing up negative. Does MCAS make illness worse? What can I do to slow things down? I'm currently on a cocktail of Zyrtec, Mucinex DM, Nasonex, Aleve, an albuterol inhaler, and Robitussin with codeine. Nothing is helping.
Symptoms: severe, persistent cough (to the point of throwing up); severe throat pain; runny nose; post-nasal drip; body aches and headache (due to coughing); severe fatigue; wheezing; stridor.

2023.10.11 19:57 PartOfYourWorld3 Allergies During Pregnancy

I am 3 days away from a c-section. I've struggled with allergies. I was approved to switch was Clairitin to Zyrtec a few weeks ago and it helped. However, fall has hit where I am and my allergies are bad again. My biggest concern is my cough. I have so much post nasal drip that I violently cough, so much that I sometimes throw up. I have no idea how I'll go through with a c-section on Saturday.
I'm also doing sinus rinses, steamy showers, and taking Robitussin DM. These aren't enough. My doctor keeps saying no to Flonase, which I needed pre-pregnancy. I have another question out to her about taking it. I cannot find any risks out there on Flonase. This coughing is so bad again. Any other tips to battle allergies?

2023.06.24 15:14 andie-walsh Seeking Advice: Dealing with Persistent Nighttime Coughing

I'm hoping to get some advice or insights on a persistent nighttime cough that's been bothering me lately. About a week and a half ago, I had a cold start with congestion, which eventually turned into a persistent cough. Luckily, the congestion has cleared up, and I'm not experiencing any shortness of breath.
During the day, I've been managing the cough with the help of Robitussin and Zyrtec. They seem to work fine and keep the cough under control. However, when it comes to nighttime, things take a turn for the worse. Even though Robitussin Night helps me fall asleep initially, I find myself waking up in the middle of the night with intense coughing fits.
To provide some context, I'm currently undergoing chemotherapy, and my oncologist doesn't seem concerned about the cough. She believes it may be related to the treatment. Nonetheless, it's been significantly affecting my sleep quality, and I'm desperate to find some relief.
I was wondering if anyone here has experienced something similar or has any advice on how to manage nighttime coughing effectively? I would greatly appreciate any suggestions, remedies, or insights you may have.
Thank you in advance for your support and input

2023.05.20 18:13 Anxious-Potato3 Covid like symptoms 4 weeks after recovering from covid. Virtual doctor diagnosed it as bronchitis but looking for second opinion.

Age/Sex: 29F Weight: 123 lbs Existing medical conditions: PCOS, hypothyroidism Prescribed medications: Metformin, levothyroxine, birth control
I had Covid starting the week of April 24th, mild to medium symptoms (cough, low fever, body aches, runny nose and loss of taste/smell). I recovered a week later.
On May 15th, I started feeling a scratchy throat which developed into a full blown cough for 3 days. I took Robitussin DM which barely kept the cough down so I took Delsym DM which helped a little. I also took Sudafed PE as I felt sinus congestion. Yesterday, I started getting a severe runny nose. Finished a whole box of kleenex and zyrtec/Sudafed PE didn't help. Later last night I also lost my sense of taste and smell, and developed body muscle aches in my shoulders, abs and back/obliques. Felt like the day after a hard workout. This morning, the cough is at bay but runny nose, sinus congestion, headache and muscle ache continues. A covid test I took this morning came out negative. I have been taking tylenol throughout this as needed.
I had a virtual doctor visit 3 hrs ago where he diagnosed it as Bronchitis and prescribed antibiotics (which I thought odd). He said not to take Sudafed PE as it dries out mucus and only to take Robitussin DM which I did.
I'm looking for a second opinion on what this could be and how I can feel better? I'm concerned as to why I've lost my taste/smell and whether it will come back? Should I take the antibiotics? What can I do to relieve sinus pressure if not taking Sudafed? Why are my abs/back muscles hurting? Thanks for your help!

2023.04.15 02:19 shy_penguin_127 False positive drug test

He's 20ftm 5'0 135lbs
My boyfriend got accepted into a research internship at a hospital for this summer and was doing all the required paperwork and tests and today he got a positive result back for codeine. He is severely asthmatic and along with his prescription medicine he has been regularly taking otc zyrtec, robittusin, benadryl, ibuprofen, and tylenol for a solid 5 years. Just one of these could cause a false positive as they conatain dxm, but with all five it was the obvious cause and so we weren't worried.
The hospital (presumedly) looked at his prescriptions, his otc meds, and the letter written by his doctor, and emailed back saying he would be let in as long as he complied with random drug tests, he agreed and planned to stop taking the meds I mentioned (not the smartest choice but he needed this internship). Thirty minutes later they email back saying that after further review, he will not be let back because robittusin will not cause a false positive and he needs to show a valid prescription containing codeine. They completely ignored all 4 other meds and the length of time he's been on them.
We don't know what to do, I mean how do you prove that you don't do drugs when they're convinced that u do? There's so many studies that show antihistamines can cause false positives, and robitussin seemed like an obvious cause to me, but they didnt seem to want to believd anything unless it was a prescription. Maybe I'm in the wrong here and misunderstanding the drugs, please tell me if I am. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to fix this, what information would be best to show them to prove its false?

2022.09.27 19:02 -lover-of-books- Took flexeril and robitussin together and started vomiting hours later.....

About me - 29F, 200lbs, no allergies PMH/meds - PRN 5mg Flexeril at night for back pain/calf cramps from herniated disc causing nerve damage to right leg, had a cold a couple weeks ago that caused a cough (taking budesonide inhaler once a day for cough), take zyrtec daily (never noticed drowsiness taking it), birth control, had been taking codeine/guaifenesen cough syrup on and off for two weeks, but last time using it was about a week before taking the robitussin instead.
So I took 5mg Flexeril (usually take a couple times a month, last took weeks before) and liquid robitussin (I think 20mg, taken sporadically over the previous week), plus a zyrtec. I ate at 2pm, so took the meds on an empty stomach but I almost always take these meds on an empty stomach, anyways, and never had issues.
I took them around 6-7pm, by 10pm I started vomiting for a couple hours. Sweating when I was vomiting but shivering/cold in between when laying in bed. I already have random muscle twitches in my right leg (either the entire leg lightly twitches or a tiny part of the leg does) but both legs were twitching and a little more frequently than it has been. But no actual muscle spasms. And I've had insomnia the last couple days. I was very drowsy all the next day (but I dont think I was confused) and my stomach was still queasy that next afternoon.
Drowsiness from Flexeril 5mg usually, like clockwork, gets out of my system within 8 hrs. Robitussin has made me feel loopy in the past, but I hadn't felt that the couple times I took it leading up to this.
I know setotonin syndrome is very rare, but is it likely I had a mild case of it or was the vomiting from just side effects of both meds at the same time?
I'm afraid to take either med now (will never take at the same time again!!!!). I can do without the robitussin because I feel like my cough is finally getting better, but I'm traveling next week and I'll most likely want/need a Flexeril.

2022.06.27 16:04 DunDunnDunnnnn So my dumb ass got Serotonin Syndrome

Let me start by saying I do NOT know if this had anything to do with kratom but now I've considerably lowered my dose since it happened. Went from about 8-10 GPD to 4. This experience was fucking terrifying.
So, I'm on 150 mg of Wellbutrin XL, which I took as normal that morning. Having recently had mono, I had been prescribed Zofran for nausea. Throughout the day I unknowingly took an idiot's cocktail of Wellbutrin, Zofran, Zyrtec, Robitussin w DXM, and a good amount of caffeine. I also took kratom. At around 6 PM I was playing a video game and all of the sudden I was like "UH OHHH something isn't right..." My heart was pounding and I was getting waves of dizziness. I couldn't sit still. I started sweating and felt so warm I had to put an ice pack in my bra to cool my core down. My jaw started clenching and the rest of my muscles felt super tight.
After about 15 minutes of this not getting better, I called 911. I thought I was dying. The EMTs came and at first assumed panic attack but then after asking me what meds I took and looking at my pupils, told me they suspected Serotonin Syndrome. They said that only a doctor could officially diagnose me but this was their best guess. My blood pressure and pulse rate were high but not dangerously so. I considered going to the ER but they said it would be at least a 5 hour wait. I ended up having a friend come and watch me. The EMT's told him that if I started acting drunk or seizing, to call 911 immediately. I puked a few times and then slowly started feeling better.
For the next few days I felt like the dementors came from Azkaban and had sucked my soul out of my body. It was very dark. Luckily, if this indeed was Serotonin Syndrome, it was mild. Wondering if anyone thinks that the kratom had a role here? I've read differing opinions regarding kratom's effects on serotonin.
