2024.05.14 03:19 EthantheWizard2020 Nate lives in Maine?

Considering multiple references to Massachusetts and Boston in general, I thought Nate lived in suburban Massachusetts. He’s a Diehard Boston sports fan, (which I know most Mainers are, but still). In the Social Studies Jeopardy, Gina gets a question about the state motto of Massachusetts, and answers it correctly. I’m not saying Gina couldn’t be that big of a big brain, but the question would only be relevant if they lived in Massachusetts. In my entire 6th grade social studies career was I ever asked about the state motto of even my state, let alone one which would be hundreds of miles away. As for the whole Boston reference, I assume the ballpark shown in the summer poem (“Remember the Ballpark in Mid July?”) was Fenway. I get that Mainers likely do travel to Boston to watch the Sox play, but I know Nate’s Dad wouldn’t drive all the way from wherever Rackliffe is all the way to Boston.

Boston Bruins vs. Florida Panthers: A Recap of Ice Hockey's Theatre of the Absurd

On a night that could only be described as a puck-filled pandemonium, the Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers clashed in a game that was less a display of athletic prowess and more a comedic ballet on ice. The date was May 12, 2024, and fans in attendance were treated to a spectacle that would have made the Bard himself chuckle from the great rink in the sky.

Act I: The Odds of Misfortune

Before the puck even dropped, the bookmakers had spoken, and their prophecy was clear: the Florida Panthers, with odds at a commanding 1.49, were the darlings of the betting world (DraftKings, 2024; FanDuel, 2024). The Boston Bruins, on the other hand, were the underdogs, the scrappy fighters with odds set at a less-than-favorable 2.7 (DraftKings, 2024; FanDuel, 2024). Little did the oddsmakers know, they were setting the stage for an evening of slapstick surprises.

Act II: The Slapstick Spectacle

As the game commenced, it became apparent that the Bruins and Panthers had decided to throw the script out the window. Passes went awry, skates tangled, and the puck seemed to have a mind of its own, bouncing with the unpredictability of a caffeinated squirrel. The players, in their quest for hockey glory, appeared more like actors in a silent film, providing the audience with a series of pratfalls and gags that would make Charlie Chaplin proud.

The Keystone Cops on Skates

The first period was a masterclass in physical comedy. Defensemen tripped over blue lines, forwards mistook the referee's skates for the puck, and goalies—those stoic sentinels of the net—flailed like windmills in a hurricane. It was as if both teams had conspired to redefine the term "power play" to mean "the power to play the fool."

The Jesters of the Jersey

As the game wore on, the players seemed to embrace their roles as jesters in jerseys. One particularly memorable moment involved a Panther attempting a slapshot, only to have his stick shatter upon impact, sending the rubber disk skittering harmlessly to the corner while the splintered shaft helicoptered into the stands. The crowd roared with laughter, and the bewildered player could only offer a sheepish grin.

Act III: The Numbers Narrate Nonsense

In a game where the stats sheet read more like a comedy script, the numbers told a tale of two teams who seemed to forget the objective of hockey. Shots on goal were more miss than hit, and the penalty minutes stacked up as if the players were competing for a record in the most creative ways to earn a trip to the sin bin.

The Statistician's Lament

For the number-crunchers and stat aficionados, this game was a nightmare wrapped in a riddle. Attempting to analyze the performance metrics was akin to deciphering the meaning of a Dadaist poem. Yet, amidst the chaos, there were glimmers of actual hockey being played—brief, fleeting moments where muscle memory overcame the madness, and the puck found its way to the back of the net.

Act IV: The Final Curtain

As the final buzzer sounded, the score was almost an afterthought. The real victory was in the entertainment provided, the laughs shared, and the collective realization that sometimes, sports can be a delightful diversion from the seriousness of life.
The Panthers may have been the victors on paper, but the true winners were those who witnessed this absurd ballet of sticks and skates. It was a game that would be talked about for years to come, not for the skill displayed, but for the sheer joyous lunacy of it all.

Epilogue: The Moral of the Story

In the grand scheme of things, this game between the Bruins and Panthers will be remembered not for its impact on the standings or the record books, but for its contribution to the rich tapestry of hockey hilarity. It was a reminder that even in the competitive cauldron of professional sports, there is room for laughter, for the unexpected, and for the sheer, unadulterated fun of the game.
So let us raise our sticks to the Bruins and Panthers, not for their prowess on the ice, but for their unwitting performance in the theatre of the absurd. May the memories of this game endure, a testament to the unpredictable joy of hockey and the enduring power of a good chuckle.

2024.05.12 22:49 DynaStaats The Knife Lady

The Knife Lady
Wait, everything has to rhyme? Ummm… a bit of exposition before we start, My wife passed way last year, something to do with her heart. We don’t know why she died and we never will, But I’m here, myself, I have to go on still. If you don’t know, the fan art I’ve credited is from an Amazon prime show, Called “Hazbin Hotel”, I’m quite a fan, and there’s a character I want you to know. She’s an overlord of hell whose looks you can describe, As a “knife themed ballerina”, and I was inspired by her design. This poem is not about her, she just inspired the personification within, I’d like to know your thoughts please, now, let us begin.

Hi guys,
Love, love, and love. That is all I desire here.
Me:
A Texan through and through, with roots in small towns and residence in the big city. I am currently pursuing a career in health-care as a medical student, and I moved to Chicago for that reason. Finally, I am of South Asian descent, which adds a touch of cultural richness to the mix.
Hobbies/Interests: If we share the same interests, then that is great. It's not necessary, though. I value a connection over shared hobbies.
One of my favorite pastimes is watching movies. I have frequent movie nights. Some showings include: "Inception", "Godzilla Minus One", "The Thing" (1982), "Whiplash", and "Shutter Island". Snacks and drinks are included. Terence Fletcher is mean, but my cooking is meaner. I enjoy exploring various cuisines at restaurants, and I enjoy trying new recipes when cooking at home. A few of my favorite cuisines are: Thai, Mediterranean, and Indian. I balance out the snacking, drinking (virgin), and eating by being active. I frequently run, walk, and lift. You might have seen me running on Bloomingdale Park Trail or walking along Union Park. A few other interests are reading, boardgames, videogames, and learning a language. I love the competitiveness, strategizing, and fantasy involved in boardgames, but I think Robinson Crusoe has the upper hand in those areas. I think it would be fun to have our conversations in another language and whisper sweet nothings to each other. Mon amour. Mahal ko.
Personality:
I am a combination of reserved and adventurous, leaning towards seriousness yet showcasing a playful side when I'm comfortable with someone. I find comfort in being a homebody, but I do emerge from my cave. I strive to go the extra mile for my partner, and I always try to showcase of my love for someone through cards, poems (albeit poorly written), and physical affection.
Physical Description:
My hair cascades in subtle curles at mid-neck-length. I am a fan of the clean-shaven aesthetic, but I occasionally sport well-maintained stubble. My complexion is caramel that is accompanied by dark brown eyes. I have a slim-to-average physique, and I stand at a height of 5'7".
You:
I am searching for someone who values a healthy and active lifestyle, someone who takes care of themselves physically. While physical compatibility is important, I value a shared commitment to overall wellness. Intimacy and romance (sweet sweet love) are important to me, and I like physical affection a lot (a lot). Admittedly, I do like someone that is slightly clingy. It's nice to feel wanted. I would like someone that is vulnerable because it builds a stronger connection. I deeply appreciate the intimacy it fosters. I desire a partner who values companionship and reciprocity, understanding that mutual effort and appreciation are fundamental. I'm drawn to qualities like open-mindedness, calmness, and versatility in a potential partner. A lot of sweetness, a dash of spice, and a little chemical X.
Stuff:
Religion & Politics:
I'm personally not religious. I'm open-minded towards all religious affiliations and welcome the opportunity to learn about different faiths. Similarly, my political stance isn't easily boxed into conservative or democratic ideologies. I value the continuous evolution of my political beliefs, emphasizing independent thinking and the avoidance of polarizing partisan politics.
Kids & Pets:
I've made the decision not to have children. For me, it's about prioritizing my partner, hobbies, and career. I opt not to have pets due to lifestyle constraints, financial considerations, and personal preferences. I simply have no interest in having pets, but I'd be willing to accommodate.

2024.05.11 23:55 AnimationCreationz Hi. I have a series that I never finished. Incase you are somehow curious, the 'show bible' is below.

Show bible - The children’s deadly escape room.
As many children are kidnapped in a science museum from a 'failed' experiment, they don’t know where they are. All they know is that they were at a birthday party then they were dragged through a portal.
This story takes place in multiple episodes around the world. Some rooms take one child back in time to a horrible place. This place has a sinister, creepy but joke-like environment. At some places there may be dark humour, mainly near-death moments.
The theme is a dangerous environment and quick mental solving as it is a deadly escape room.
A few main characters are:
Heather Colldun - She is a joyful but smart person. She is a true asset to the team. She wears a purple top and a blue skirt. She likes big problems.
Aledime Slayer - A mean and sarcastic girl. Not everyone likes her. Her only friend is Violet Westre. She wears a green top with black trousers. She likes bullying.
Violet Westre - The actual leader of the escape rooms. A shy but very logical girl. A good liar. She wears a turquoise shirt and yellow skirt. She likes poems.
Lucas Tredness - A sports person. He comes in handy when a long run is needed. He wears a red tracksuit. He likes sports.
Lucy Extrel - A character with cancer who has daily medicine provided by the escape room who is friends with every kind person. She likes to wear a wig but everyone accepts her for not having hair. She wears a Green top with a lilac skirt. She likes art.
Season 1
The children (30 or 31) don’t know where they are. They have multiple of the same clothes to wear everyday they stay in the escape rooms. They are well-fed and have bunk beds to sleep on. The escape rooms have an uneasy feel to them. The children feel like they’re being watched (by the viewer) but the children don’t know they’re being watched.
Episode summary
Ep.1 Jump It!
The first episode/challenge of the show. The children are unsuspecting that it is dangerous until one kid dies by drowning. The children soon realise that it is truly serious. The escape room consists of a tube underwater that has a 5-number lock on it. Violet was the key for the escape this time.
Ep.2 Dangerous Dodgeball
In this episode some is revealed. Where is it set? How do they get their infinite food? This episode is set in a giant glass hall where the remaining kids play dodgeball. One character breaks the rules and finds a hidden room. This shows that it is set everywhere on the globe and the food supply is infinite.
Ep.3 Footie Football
In this episode, the kids play a game of murderous football where if the children cheat, they die. Creating a fair game of football. The losing team dies. Half of the children who are dead get replaced by sleeping children.
Ep.4 Malicious Mazes
Red - Instant death Yellow - 1 question
Purple - 2 questions Green - safe
Once a red tile is touched (or killed someone) then it is inactive so it can only kill one person. They can only move left, back, forward and right. It takes a long time to complete. Each question is a multiple choice.
Ep.5 Realistic Rodeo
In this episode, all the remaining and alive kids come to real life and face a problem in a school. It takes place at night at a high school where security guards will shoot anyone on sight, it is possible to lose them but it takes a while.
Ep.7 Assastionation Allowance
In this episode, the remaining children have to kill a target
For example: Violet Westre has a target on Aledime Slayer meanwhile Aledime has a target on Violet Westre. At this point only a few kids remain. The children seem to have had a target on their friends.
Possibly more. I'm not sure about more ideas.
The final episode - Freedom Fighters
In this episode the kids find the leader's base and battle's Violet and her guards. The episode ends with one of the kids getting out of a guard outfit and stabbing Violet with a dart from a dartboard from one of the rooms.
For example, it could be like:
Violet: Ha! I still HAVE a guard.
Heather: Don't be too sure, Violet Westre.
Violet: What do you mean? I have control of all the rules.
New shy kid: Well today, The rules are DIFFERENT!
He Stabs Violet.
Violet: Gah! Fine! I'll tell you about the room's origins! Okay? You *CENSOR*. So, there was one reason these exist. I made it... ah... to strengthen your abilities...
Heather: You killed SO many people!

2024.05.09 00:21 Goldstein_Goldberg Manor Lords music led me into a rabbit hole of medieval music. Meet Oswald von Wolkenstein, composer of the in-game song "Vil Lieber Grüsse Süsse"

I was playing Manor Lords and I was struck by an instrumental tune "Vil Lieber Grüsse Süsse". It was also used in the launch trailer.
Here's the in-game version: https://youtu.be/M31x6tWGNxI And here's the version with lyrics: Ensemble für frühe Musik Augsburg - Vil lieber grüsse süsse (youtube.com)
Turns out it's the instrumental version of a real medieval song written and composed by Oswald von Wolkenstein. His life is well-recorded and interesting. He becomes a squire to a knight at age 10, breaks a lot of oaths, becomes a knight himself, participates in politics with kings, emperor's and the clergy. All while composing songs about travel, God and sex that survived to this day. I highly recommend a dive into his Wikipedia page: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oswald_von_Wolkenstein
And that got me to the song he wrote looking back at his life: "Es Fügt Sich", or "It Falls Into Place".
It's lovely. Have a listen: https://youtu.be/_o0AUCwHzt8?list=RD_o0AUCwHzt8
And here's a translation of the full poem in the song:
"It occurred to me, when I was ten years of age, that I wanted to see what the world was like. [Since then] I have dwelled in so many a hot and cold corner, in misery and poverty, with Christians, Greek-Orthodox, and heathens. I had taken three pennies in my bag and one piece of bread from home to keep me alive, when I ran away into hardship. Because of strange “friends” I have ever since lost so many drops of blood, that I thought that I would die. Suffering from heavy penance I walked on foot until the day when my father died. I was fourteen then and yet still did not own a horse, except for one that I had stolen, and one that I also had stolen, a mule, light in color, but unfortunately I lost both in the same way. You know, I was messenger boy, cook, and horse groom; I even pulled an oar—that was hard— near Candia [Crete] and elsewhere, and later back again. All kinds of coats were my best clothing. II. To Prussia, Lithuania, Tartary, Turkey, and to the other side of the sea, to France, Italy, Léon-Galicia love drove me, and I had to pay for it myself, marching with the armies of two kings: Ruprecht and Sigmund, both under the sign of the eagle. French, Arabic, Catalan, Castilian, German, Latin, Slovenian, Italian, Russian, and Greek: these ten languages I used whenever necessary. Moreover I knew how to play the fiddle, the trumpet, drums, and the flute.
I sailed around islands and peninsulas, and many other countries on large ships, which saved me from the dangers of storms. I busily traversed the northern and the southern part of the sea. The Black Sea made me hug a barrel, when, in my misfortune, my brigantine crashed. I was a merchant then, but I survived well and could rescue myself, I and a Russian. In the wild sea my capital and profit sank away down to the depths, whereas I swam to the shore.
Before the queen of Aragon—what a beautiful woman!— I knelt down, gladly I pointed my beard toward her, and with white hands she attached a precious ring to the beard. She was very kind and said: “Never remove it again!” With her hand she cut a hole into my earlobe with a little needle made out of brass. According to their customs she attached two rings to them, which I wore for a long time. They are called raicades. Then immediately afterward I went up to King Sigismund. He stared at me with gaping open mouth, crossed himself when he recognized me. He immediately cried out loudly to me: “You wear such trashy stuff!” Then he asked me in a friendly way: “Do the rings not hurt you?” The women and also the men looked at me, laughing altogether, among them nine people of royal descent who happened to be in Perpignan, among them their pope of Luna, called Peter, and also, as the tenth of them, the Roman [German] king and the lady of Prades.
I wanted to reform my vain life, believe me that, and I turned into a migrant monk 26 for well over two whole years. At the beginning I was certainly inspired by devotion, but then love spoiled the end entirely. Irrespective of how long I traveled around on horseback, looking for knightly sport, and served a lady, what I will pass over in silence, she never wanted to grant me her grace, not one iota, until a monk’s garb made me into a fool. Many things then worked out easily for me, when the cowl with the hood clothed me. Truly, never before or after did a girl prove to be so friendly, who had gracefully listened to my words. Straightaway my devotion flew away through the chimney when I shook the cowl off amid the smoke. Since then I have experienced many struggles in matters of love, and my joy has been bitten by frost quite badly. It would take too long to relate all my suffering, but I am tortured above all by wonderfully beautiful lips, whch have wounded my heart until the day of bitter death.
In her presence I often broke out in cold sweat, the color of my face often changed from red to pale when I encountered the pretty girl. Because of much trembling and sighing I often no longer felt my body, as if I had been burnt. Suddenly frightened even when two hundred miles away from her, I feel roasted and as yet without comfort. Cod, rain, and snow, along with torturing frost can never bother me so much that I would not have burnt when the beloved sun [his mistress] heated me up. When I am with her, then the center and limits of my life are no longer free. Because of a lady I am forced to take foreign, bad roads leading me into the unknown, until hatred disappears thanks to her gracefulness. If she were willing to help, my sadness would turn into blissfulness.
Four hundred women or more, but not one man, did I find on the island of Ios [Nios]; they lived there on this small spot of earth. No one has ever seen a more beautiful image in one hall. Nevertheless, none of those ladies could outshine the one for whom I carry a heavy load on my back. Oh God, if she only knew half of my painful burden, then everything would be much easier, whatever suffering I would experience, and I would have hopes that she might grant me her pity. When I am wringing my hands many times while in foreign lands, then I am painfully feeling the lack of her greeting, and I do not sleep well in sweet peacefulness neither late at night nor early in the morning. The reasons for this are her tender, white arms. Young men and women, you who are in love, keep this kind of suffering in mind. How happy I felt when the beloved granted me her blessing. Truly, on my honor, if I had to realize that I would no longer see her, then my eyes would have to pay for it with many tears.
I spent forty years minus two so far [in my life] with exuberance, wild behavior, creating poetry, and singing all kinds of songs. Now the time would be ripe to listen as a married man to the screaming of my own children in the crib. But I will never be able to forget the one [woman] who instilled happiness in me here on earth. Nowhere in the entire world would I be able to find anyone like her. However, I am very afraid of the nagging scolding [barking] of the wife.
Many a wise man has so far appreciated my judgment and advice, and they also enjoyed my happy songs. I, Wolkenstein, certainly live unreasonably by having been so committed to this world. Also, I admit, I do not know when I will die, whereupon nothing more significant will follow than the results of my deeds. If then I would have served God properly according to His will, then I would not be afraid of the hot blazing fames [in Hell]."

2024.05.09 00:16 Goldstein_Goldberg Discovered some cool medieval music, composed around 1350 with an interesting backstory.

Like many of you I was checking out the new Manor Lords game and I was struck by an instrumental tune from that game. Sadly I am not allowed to link to YouTube look it up "Vil Lieber Grüsse Süsse".

2024.05.07 17:11 Whatisittou Harry is in the UK for Invictus Foundation Anniversary

Harry is in the UK for Invictus Foundation Anniversary
Prince Harry is taking the mic to support the Invictus Games.
On May 7, the Duke of Sussex, 39, joined a panel during his trip to the U.K. for the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games. The discussion, "The IGF Conversation: Realizing a Global Community," is set to reflect on the global community of service personnel and their families that the Invictus Games has fostered since its inception a decade ago through the power of adaptive sport, from Prince Harry’s initial inspiration at the Warrior Games to Invictus' impact in the years since.
Prince Harry, a former captain in the British Army who served two tours in Afghanistan, launched the adaptive sports tournament for service personnel and veterans in 2014. The inaugural Invictus Games were held in London that September, and he traveled to the U.K. from his California home to celebrate the milestone anniversary.
Reflecting on the past decade of the Invictus Games, the Duke of Sussex was asked if there was a "magic moment" from the event that made him "smile."
"It probably hasn’t changed, still, it has to be in the beginning, 2014, in the copper box," he replied. "I was at the DJ decks, trying to choose some of the music and put the lights on and just get people on their feet."
Prince Harry shouted out Guy Monson, who "never left his seat" at the event.
"But it was that final game of U.S.A. vs. U.K., and it was just end to end. I think it was wheelchair rugby and wheelchair basketball. And that, to me, was the highlight because you had 6,000 people who had filled this stadium and were on their feet, every age from 95 to 5, and people were just literally blown away by what they were watching. We had no idea what was going to happen."
Harry added, "I think we’ve just had a huge amount of fun. I think that I personally have learned so much from the people that I have met. The children, the family, the friends, the individuals themselves, and the amount of respect and admiration I have for all of them just continues to build just year after year after year. And now we have these Invictus One Year to Go events as well because, to be honest with you, we can’t wait two years!"
"So whoever is going to host the next Games, we’re all going to be there one year ahead, and then at the Games themselves," he continued. "So the highlight for me is being in this community with all these people."
Looking ahead, Prince Harry had a surprising answer about the future of the Invictus Games.
"Look I’ve said this over and over again over the years, every time I’ve been asked a similar question, which is, 'How long does Invictus go on for?' And the answer to that is, for as long as it’s serving a purpose. I would love more than anything — and there will be people in this room who go, 'What is he saying?' — but I would love more than anything to put this in a box, put it on a shelf, and to let that box be covered in dust because we don’t need it in anymore," he said. "But as we in this room probably understand more so than most, that’s just simply not the case."
"I’m a big fan of trying to solve the root cause of a problem, and the root cause of the problem is conflict. I can’t fix that," he continued. "So we will always be here to be able to spread the message, tell the stories, change the perspectives and to help as many people as humanly possible because Invictus transcends borders, it transcends politics. It is what it is. There is this magic within this community that exists."
Prince Harry hopes new countries will join the event — and if funding allows, more competitors in each Invictus Games.
"We cap our competitors at 550 strong," he said. "If there are people in this room who really want to come in with a big number of funding, then we can probably increase that, but then it means the Games go beyond a week, and everything else starts becoming much longer and bigger."
Beyond the panel discussion, Harry's itinerary includes a service at St. Paul’s Cathedral on May 8. The Duke of Sussex is set to deliver a reading at the cathedral in the heart of London, and Homeland star Damian Lewis will recite the poem "Invictus." The prose by William Ernest Henley is full of meaning for the Invictus Games community, and the competition’s motto "I am" comes from its final line — "I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul."
Henley is coincidentally commemorated with a memorial bust in the Crypt of St. Paul's, which is where the future King Charles and Princess Diana married in 1981.
The program is expected to bring together representatives from the Invictus Games’ participating nations, including members of the wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veteran community. Invictus community members, supporters, and beneficiaries will also give readings and participate in the service, which will be led by The Very Reverend Andrew Tremlett, Dean of St Paul’s.
News of Prince Harry’s Invictus-focused trip was announced on April 28 and brings him back to the U.K. for the first time in a few months. The Duke of Sussex flew to London in February for a private visit with his father, King Charles, after Buckingham Palace announced the sovereign's cancer diagnosis on Feb. 5. Several days later, he stepped out in Canada with his wife, Meghan Markle, Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025's One Year to Go celebrations, which counted down to the seventh cycle of the games in Canada next year.
Prince Harry will not meet with King Charles during his trip to the U.K. for the Invictus Games anniversary, PEOPLE confirms.
A spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex says, "In response to the many inquiries and continued speculation on whether or not The Duke will meet with his father while in the U.K. this week, it unfortunately will not be possible due to His Majesty’s full program. The Duke of course is understanding of his father’s diary of commitments and various other priorities and hopes to see him soon."
Prince Harry made his latest visit to the U.K. solo, but he is due to reunite with Meghan, 42, for another significant trip this week. On the heels of the announcement of the Invictus anniversary plans, PEOPLE confirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are heading to Nigeria. The couple accepted an invitation on behalf of the Chief of Defense Staff, the country’s highest-ranking military official.
During their visit, Prince Harry and Meghan will meet with service members and participate in a variety of cultural activities.
The agenda will highlight the Invictus Games following Nigeria’s event debut at the latest Invictus Games in Düsseldorf, Germany in September 2023. Nigerian Minister of Defense Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar Badaru also attended the competition in Germany and has expressed interest in hosting the games in the future.
Prince Harry and Meghan spent time with the Nigerian team at the tournament in Düsseldorf, and the Duke of Sussex revealed in his speech at the opening ceremony in Germany that his wife was rooting for the squad after discovering that she has Nigerian heritage, a revelation made on her Archetypes podcast in 2022.
"Now, I'm not saying we play favorites in our home, but since my wife discovered she's of Nigerian descent, it's likely to get a little bit more competitive this year," he joked.
On the topic of friendly allegiances and lighthearted rivalries, Prince Harry previously told PEOPLE that there was "no picking sides" for him between the U.K. and U.S. teams following his California move.
"I feel like I have a special bond with all the teams, and I’m very much a supporter of the sport, as opposed to the winning. So there’s no picking sides for me!" he told PEOPLE in 2022.

2024.05.06 19:56 obliviousthrift Researched an article that surveys 75 recent Polo Ralph Lauren sales on eBay ($28.30+), and looks at some trends in their titles. Here are some of the findings.

Plus-Sized Polos
Sounds obvious that big-and-tall clothes should sell for more, since they aim at a narrower market and comprise more material, but my tally of the 75 sales showed an interesting bell-curvy representation of sizing.
Predictable to see Large, XL, and 2XL in the top three—but it was surprising to see 4XL coming in fourth, skipping 3XL and Medium. (Note: I know this tally doesn’t add up to 75; some of the listings were wholesale lots with varying sizes, so I left them out.)

Camouflage Pattern

Prior to reselling, I’d have said there’s three types of camoflage: jungle, desert, and snow kinds. Turns out there’s more. Even just the greeny-brown ones. “Breakup” camoflage, for forestry with lotsa sticks, “splinter” and “woodlan” and “flecktarn.” Whatever the case: that pattern sells well. Often across brands. Terapeak, a researching tool for eBay storeowners, shows 19,639 Polo Ralph Lauren polo shirts (for Golfing) sold in the past 90 days.
At an average cost of $22.
When running the same search, only adding the word “camo,” we see the average sale price jump to $38.
Not exactly a gold rush, but it’s a better trend than your typical row of PRL.

Terry Cloth

Pretty discreet, since they look like any other PRL shirt from a distance, but once you touch it you’ll know the difference.
Better known as a coveted material for bathrobes, absorbant and insulating, terry fabric is soft in a way that makes you feel guilty. But terry manifests another quality that drives huge sales across all brands of menswear: convenience. They’re easy to clean and they hold their shape and they last a long time. You’ll find in other brands, like Banana Republic, that their best-selling menswear lines have names like Wrinkle Free and Non-Iron and Stain Resistant and Built to Last. Men are statistically more likely to buy a shirt that promises it’ll be a long time before they have to buy another shirt. (Also worth noting: Ralph Lauren’s Terry Polo retails for $380.)

Rugby

Ask an eBay seller, “What’s a rugby shirt?” Bring lunch. It’s like asking Walt Whitman what grass is: they’ll tell you they have no idea, and then talk for nine pages.
According to one clear-headed source: a rugby shirt is basically a polo, but with a stiffer collar, and ideally made of sturdier material.
“Rugby shirts,” whatever they are, constitute some of the better-selling Ralph Lauren polos.
On the left, we see a promotional photo for POLO BY RALPH LAUREN rugby shirts. On the right we see the logo for something completely different: a polo by Ralph Lauren called RALPH LAUREN RUGBY.
Where it gets confusing is, for the most part, a rugby shirt has long sleeves. Not all rugby-themed PRL shirts have long sleeves. In fact, most of the polos that sell as “rugby shirts” do not have long sleeves. (According to Terapeak: searching “Polo Ralph Lauren rugby shirt” with filters Mens Polo, Longsleeve, Polo Ralph Lauren shows an average sale price of $33.)
However, between 2004 and 2013 there was a line called Rugby Ralph Lauren. It’s discontinued and, as of this year, the line is technically vintage. (Rugby Ralph Lauren polo shirts have an average sale price of $40, according to Terapeak.)
What seems to generally be meant by “polo shirt” is a long-sleeve polo with horizontal stripes. Sometimes there’s an embroidered number on the sleeve and/or back. Also, while Polo Ralph Lauren typically sports a pony logo on the left breast, over the heart, the “rugby” themed shirts often have a crest of some kind on the right breast.

Honestly Just Long Sleeves in General

Didn’t even know they made em this way. Literally just a standard Ralph Lauren polo shirt and collar, just the leeves are long, and seem to usually have an elastic cuff. They also seem to mostly be vintage. Terapeak says the average sale price is $30, which gets in line with my own observations (i.e. about 50% more than the average polo shirt).

AOP

Stands for “all-over pattern,” which means the shirt has some kind of graphic that repeats all over the shirt. Pineapples are popular but, passing no judgment, it might be worth noting that pineapple-themed clothing is also a low-key signal used by swingers. Not sure how you might tilt your keywords toward that demo, but let me know if you try.

The Right-chest Crest

Opposite the pony logo, usually part of a sports theme, I noticed that RLP polos with a crest generally sold for more money than most others; Terapeak backs this up, showing they have an average sale price of $32, ten bucks higher than the standard polo.

2024.05.03 22:34 mamaleti Parents raising your kids in another culture, what has surprised you or what was different from where you grew up? What have you enjoyed?

For me, definitely my son's school in southern Mexico is very different from my experience in the U.S.- we parents get homework for us to do several times a week (making materials like cardboard binoculars, writing a holiday poem, etc.) In the US, never.
The kids in his class are so incredibly friendly and outgoing, they just exude love. Seems like shyness is not a thing. At the same time, many speak in a more baby talk way than kids their age in the US. I think maybe all this is because they spend more time with kids and less alone with adults.
Ideas about health are different- cool air or weather changes are seen as a major cause of illness, meanwhile people are much less careful of sharing germs.
Kids are allowed way more candy here than I saw in the US, including spicy candy that even little kids like. But also many eat lots of fruits and vegetables, with spicy powder on top.
Teaching style in kids activities like dance or sports for me seems un-standable, like super boring, stand in line, obey...in the US it was much more dynamic and fun.
How about your experiences?

2024.05.03 19:06 Original_Ownsya A Guide and Exploration to the Sphinx's final riddle - Defeat her in Combat Without Unmaking Arrow

So I really enjoyed the Sphinx in this game, both as a character, the way she's designed as well as the riddles and indeed fighting her at the end. She was probably the most enjoyable boss fight for me so far, except of course when she decides you're unworthy and simply flies away. Admittedly despite the clues, it took me way too long to figure out how to defeat her in combat without relying on the Unmaking Arrow, so I thought I'd make a post clearly explaining the clues and with a clip showing part of the fight so it's clear where I'm attacking her.

TL;DR: You can attack her anywhere other than her human parts and she won't deem you unworthy that way, allowing you to defeat her to collect her loot. There are clues in the game hinting that 1) It is in fact possible to fight her and that's how to open the final chest, 2) The correct way to fight her is given in both the mural riddle and visually on the amphora. 3) She also gives cues during combat to indicate whether you're on the right track or if you're disappointing her. (Watch video)
https://reddit.com/link/1cjdtpv/video/e7xve3qsr8yc1/player

But let's explore how the game actually presents its hints to the player. Honestly, so much work clearly went into Sphinx when I look at it all, clearly this was a pet project and she is one of the highlights of this (hopefully base) game. From the clues to her mannerisms to unique Pawn dialogue specifically about her. Let's get into it.
The Sphinx's first location is at the Ancient Shrine near the Ancient Battleground. There is a passageway through worldsend cavern between the Ancient Battleground and the Shrine. In that path is the Ancient Ruins.
Ancient Ruins location
This is where you'll find a Golem enemy and two one of the earliest clues about the Sphinx. That is this Mural of the Sphinx with a bunch of weapons stuck in it and if you examine the mural you'll read the "Ode to the Sphinx" poem/riddle. You can also find "Ode to the Sphinx" on the sphinx statue just outside of her shrine (2nd picture below).
Mural of Sphinx at Ancient Ruins. Examine it to read \"Ode to the Sphinx\"
Sphinx statue at entrance to Ancient Shrine also has \"Ode to the Sphinx\" written on it

"what hath four legs in the morn, two at noon, and three anight?"
This is a classic and well-known riddle, and the answer to it is "a person" or "a human being". Explanation is that a human first crawls on all fours when they're a baby (in the morning), then walks upright on two legs (at noon) and when they're older they might use a cane to help them walk, thus three legs at night.
"the means to claim a long-sought boon" is referring to the key around her neck. The Sphinx is made of the 3 parts: human head to chest, a lion's body and an eagle's back with wings. So this part of the riddle is hinting to us that the key around her human part is the means to open the golden chest behind her.
The next part of the riddle: "With treasure thou wouldst reward the one who leaveth it unmarked by sword". Is tell us how to obtain the treasure (her key). Again its referring to her human part and it's saying she will only reward those who don't attack her human part (her chest and head).
The last part doesn't really add anything new but the phrasing has changed. Instead of asking "what has 4 legs in the morn, ... " it's now phrased as "O Sphinx! Four legs in the morn, two at noon, three anight; in the shrine thou awaitest a challenger of wit to delight." So this part is hinting that the answer to the questions posed in the first two parts is in fact the Sphinx herself, her human part at least.
With this understanding I think it becomes pretty clear what the riddle is and its answer. It's saying that to get her long-sought boon (the Eternal Wakestone in the golden chest) you must not attack her human parts. The mural itself is also showing this visually. There is a large crack in the mural separating her chest and head from the rest of her non-human body parts. The weapons are all sticking in the non-human parts as well indicating that you should attack those parts of her body only.
The next clue can be found in Bakbattahl at the Mural Byway up the stairs from the house you can purchase there. Maurits standing near it will let you know that Sphinx's riddles are only part of her challenge and that you should look at the mural behind him to understand the last part of her challenge. The mural is pictured below.
Mural at Mural Byway in Bakbattahl
Looking at the mural we see a beastren holding a twinspear who looks like he's in combat with the Sphinx. Other important details here are the key hanging down from her neck and the lone chest behind her. I think the only clear hint from this mural is that the key around her neck is needed to open that chest and you should engage in combat with her to obtain it. This answers whether it is possible or whether you should fight her, and yes, you should.
Then the last clue comes from Sphinx's Riddle of Futility. The amphora that you need to deliver to Maurits has a very clear picture on with a similar depiction as the Mural at the Ancient Site. There are spears pointing at her with gashes across her blacked out body while her head is left unharmed. So this is again hinting that these are the areas you should strike, but not her head.
The Sphinx's amphora
That's all I could find in terms of the hints in the game indicating not only that you should attack her but how to attack her in a way that won't displease her, allowing you to obtain her key and the open the final treasure chest. Finally, the fight with her was quite an enjoyable one for me. She actually gives clues during the fight as well. If you attack her head she'll say "Poor showing" and if you attack her while she's posing she'll give that disapproving shake of the head, or she'll actually nod if you hit her body parts.
I actually really enjoyed her facial expressions and body language during the fight. It's clear she's enjoying the bout and will have a great big smile before her attack where she flies into the air and launches projectiles at you. Another attack is a playful little cat hop like a cat that's playing. If you do disappoint her she'll remark that she was hoping for a bit of sport, indicating that the fight is fun for her as long as you don't attack her human parts. There is a surprising amount of unique pawn dialogue here as well.
Note that she won't immediately end the fight if you attack her head, it's only if you attack it too many times in a short period. Later in the fight she'll say "what do you think of this" and a purple glowy thing will be around her neck and centered on her chest. If you attack it directly it will knock her down for a bit and you can freely attack her body then.
If the fight keeps going and you do hit her head the pawns will make several comments about how we might be missing something even though our attacks are hurting her. I'm not sure about this but I suspect the final blow must be to the body and not the head. I did get her down to almost 0 hp in one of my tries only for her to disapprove at the final blow to the chest. I also just really enjoyed her fight overall, her attacks and movement are fun. You can actually get her to charge into the wall when she swoops down from the air with those fire claws attack.
Okay so with all these clues, why did it take me so long and so many tries to figure out how to actually beat her? That's actually part of the reason why I decided to make this post. Well admittedly I understood the murals the opposite way from what they intended lol. I assumed that all previous attempts before me had failed and so all those weapons stuck in her body and the gashes in the amphora were what the failed attempts had done. So I thought I needed to avoid attacking her body lmao. Just goes to show how things can be misinterpreted even when some parts are clear haha.
Well, hope you enjoyed this post and maybe it helps you out. I highly recommend resting at an Inn (or your dwelling) before challenging her. After you complete all her riddles then the next time you stand on the platform in front of her she will immediately tell you she's leaving now (without you pressing a button to talk to her even). So rest at inn/home first and with a portcrystal at her shrine you can just teleport back to trigger this dialogue then start attacking her as she's getting ready to fly away to trigger the fight.

2024.05.02 08:16 Swifty-loz Track list of TTPD and ideas about who they are about ♥️

Hey guys, I know it doesn’t really matter who the songs are about and everyone has their own interpretations and it’s ok, I don’t think the point is to pinpoint who which song is about and it’s SO up for interpretation anyway, but I just thought I’d share with you more for the fun and sport of it who I think the songs are about on TTPD for a bit of a kiki.
I haven’t gone into why for most of them because I feel like it’s pretty obvious (to me anyway!) but I’ve gone into the ones that have puzzled me and written some explanations for those ones. Please don’t be offended if the list is different to yours! It’s just for fun 🤩
Songs about Matty - Fortnight - The tortured poets department - My boy only breaks his favourite toys - Down bad - But daddy I love him - Fresh out the slammer - Guilty as sin - I can fix him (no really I can) - loml - The smallest man who ever lived - The black dog - Imgonnagetyouback - The Albatross (this one is hard to tell but I think about Matty because of the lyrics
“cross your thoughtless heart” (Matty is thoughtless) “only liquor anoints you” (he has an alcohol problem)
Cross your heart brings to mind promises, and alcohol anointing someone brings to mind Matty. He has known addictions, including alcohol.
So someone is making a thoughtless promise only anointed with alcohol. They’re not making a real promise. Not something truly holy. It brings to mind the lyric “Promises ocean deep, but never for keeps”
The definition of anoint is to make someone holy in a religious ceremony by putting holy water or oil on them. Or, to make someone king or queen, as part of a religious ceremony.
This applies to Matty. She was locked up in the tower of her bad relationship with Joe (she often refers to him as jail - any mention of locks or towers is code for Joe) Matty wanted to make Taylor the queen of his life. He was telling Taylor that she was his queen, his end game, he was talking marriage and babies and made lots of empty promises - ones that were made thoughtlessly and never actually followed through with. Although Taylor hoped he would have grown up by now, like he promised he would all those years ago, unfortunately he remained Peter Pan the lost boy and never grew up. It was all a mirage. The promises were never anointed with holy oil, he never followed through with his pledge of marriage and babies, they were never consecrated to each other fully in a proper marriage ceremony. Instead the promises were only anointed with alcohol.
This might be referencing that his love of alcohol trumped his love for her. It’s fairly clear that something went wrong, and I think it might have had to do with his addictions (“you needed me but you needed drugs more drugs more/and I couldn’t watch it happen” sort of vibes) Or it could just be a commentary on the Peter Pan of it all - both of which are related anyway and the same thing really in the end.
Joe - So Long London (track 5) - How did it end (track 5 of the second album!!!)
Travis - The alchemy - So high school
Jake - The manuscript
All of the others are not about boys. Or at least not the main theme, but some mentions only
In conclusion:
17 about Matty 2 about Joe 2 about Travis 1 about Jake
Doing this was kind of fun and also cause me to reflect a bit on what she did through this album. She has showed us that her true, deep heartbreak is about the demise of her 6 year relationship with Joe by making both track 5’s about him. This enabled her to shield Joe from having many songs written about him on TTPD, yet simultaneously doing justice to the significant heartbreak she has experienced through the breakdown of their relationship.
I also believe she wanted to be kind to Joe - through this album it’s clear that although she keeps referring to him as jail and grey and hospital etc etc, (fair enough) and she IS mad and disappointed about how long he dragged the relationship out for, (“and I'm pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free”) overall she isn’t wanting to destroy him or drag him through the mud. On this album she actually mostly just says goodbye, wishes him well and tells him you’ll find someone and so will I. And in the second song about him she ruminates about how did it end? Which I think is what everyone thinks when they’ve had a long relationship fail that has taken up so much of their life - they think - what?! How did that thing I was so sure about, that should have been my “birthright”eventually fall apart? They question, they do a “post mortem” on it. Try to understand it and if they had a part to play in what happened.
Another reason why she didn’t write so much about Joe was because there probably wasn’t much in the demise of that relationship to animate her writing - it was just a slow breakdown where the two people involved were so different from each other and not meant to be in the end. They grew apart gradually. Plus of course Joe never actively chose her like we saw on Your Losing Me. And may have cheated, if not actually then at least emotionally. She kind of wrote most of what she probably had to say about it on Midnights. She had lots of time to process it.
But she was WRITING NOVELS about Matty. 17 songs?!! And the angry ones!! Jeepers. She literally tore him to shreds. She came for his throat. I haven’t heard her be so angry at a man since All Too Well. She literally said he deserved PRISON. That he IS what he did. What did he do?!!?!!!! I really want to know haha!
She is so classy she will never tell. But the fact that Matty was “relieved” at her album and said it could have been much worse….guys. Whatever he did was BAD. I’m so mad at him on Taylor’s behalf. Don’t hurt Taylor!! You dumb lost boy. Anyway. He’s human, nobody’s perfect, it’s ok. And she’s moved on now. But it genuinely makes me sad to think about it.
She also wrote and wrote and wrote so we could understand that he was her ‘one that got away,’ and has been since 2014 when they met, she knows it’s crazy but he was the one that she wanted, she was in love, she thought it was forever, she thought it was meant to be, she feels like she lost her twin, she swirled him into all of her poems, told us lots of songs on folkmore were about him (locked in lowercase inside a vault), I mean….. after all these years writing in code, (folklore/evermore/midnights I’m thinking mainly) she finally wrote plainly, in full view, of this out-of-a-movie-Peter-Pan- and-Wendy legendary fairy tale love story that has spanned a decade.
What a masterpiece. I will listen to this album for all time. It is her best work to date. So completely epic and heartbroken and extraordinary and literary and dramatic and nerdy-in-a-good-way and grand and LONG and romantic and ambitious and full of hope and nostalgia and love and loss and depression and humor and trolling and self awareness and honesty and everything that is greatest about Taylor and her writing. She is Shakespeare reborn and I won’t stop saying it.
Anyway, thankyou for coming to my ted talk. What do you guys think?

Etymology and other trivia:
  • Dragon of Pride and Soul is named after a line Seto Kaiba commonly used to describe his Blue-Eyes White Dragon in the Duel Monsters anime/manga: "My pride, as well as my soul! Blue-Eyes White Dragon!!"

Millennium/Exodia

  • The Millennium theme is a reference to Story 8: Memories of the Pharaoh, the penultimate story arc in Duel Monsters, which featured various monster spirits called ka sealed inside stone tablets. They could then be called upon to fight by the Pharaoh's priests using the power of their Millennium Items. The Millennium monsters' gimmick of placing themselves in the Magic & Trap Zone is meant to emulate the way those spirits were sealed inside their tablets, and being able to forego their costs by revealing Millennium Cross is a reference to how a Millennium Item was required to use their power in the anime/manga.
  • Most of the Main Deck monsters in this theme are based on Normal Monsters used by Shimon Muran in some of the early Yu-Gi-Oh! video games.
  • The first three members use the Japanese word Sennen (lit. "millennium") to denote the theme name, while the latter two monsters use the English word Millennium.
  • The Primitive Who Awoke from a Millennium-Long Slumber is based on the Normal Monster Millennium Primitive (Sengenjin in the TCG), which in its flavor text is described as carrying a Millennium Item. Judging from this card's artwork, the Item in question seems to have been the Millennium Shield (which in some version of its flavor text is described as being a genuine Millennium Item).
  • The Golem That Guards the Millennium Treasure is based on the Normal Monster Millennium Golem, which in its flavor text is described as having guarded a certain treasure for over a thousand years.
  • Shield of the Millennium Dynasty is based on the aforementioned Millennium Shield.
  • Millenniumoon is a portmanteau of millennium and moon (with this monster being based on the Normal Monster Maiden of the Moonlight).
  • Millennium Absoluter is based on the Normal Monster Absoluter (known as Fiend Reflection #1 in English media).
  • The latter two being of the Illusion Magic tribe is a reference to how the Normal Monsters they were based on belonged to the Illusion Magic summon type in the early video games.
  • Mythical Summoned God is a phrase used by Sugoroku Muto to describe the combined form Exodia takes after all its separate parts are gathered in the Duel Monsters anime/manga. This phrase also serves as the subtitle for Phantom God, an early-era OCG-only reprint set that reprinted all pieces of Exodia the Sealed One for the first time after their release in the first PREMIUM PACK. The monster itself is based on the ka version of Exodia summoned by Shimon Muran during the Memories of the Pharaoh arc, and its LP-draining effect is meant to be a reference to how using this ka was extremely draining on its wielder's life force.
  • Millennium Cross is meant to resemble the Millennium Lock, the Millennium Item used by Shimon Muran.
  • The Temple of Wedj is based on a location from the Duel Monsters anime/manga, in which a large number of ka, including those of the Exodia parts, were sealed inside stone tablets. Wedj is an Egyptian word which originally meant "command," but is now commonly used to refer to a stele—an upright stone slab or column typically bearing a commemorative inscription or relief design, often serving as a gravestone.
  • Exode Blaze is named after the attack name of Exodia's ka in the anime/manga. The artwork depicts a scene from the anime/manga in which the ka of Exodia, controlled by Shimon, attacks Zorc Necrophades.
  • Raging Hellfire - Exode Flame is the name given to Exodia's Duel-winning effect when it was first used by Dark Yugi to beat Seto Kaiba during the DEATH-T arc in the manga. The artwork depicts the scene from that Duel in which Exodia destroys Kaiba's three Blue-Eyes White Dragons.

Gold Coffer of Light

  • Even though all the monsters related to Gold Coffer of Light from LEGACY OF DESTRUCTION were based on cards used by Yugi Muto during his final Duel against his other self in the anime/manga, The Black-Clad Sorcerer - Black Magician is instead based on the Black Magician used by Dark Yugi during that same Duel. This is also why this card's effect to Special Summon itself can be used even if the opponent is the one who controls Gold Coffer of Light.
  • Barrier of Black Magic -Mirror Force- is likewise a reference to how Atem/Dark Yugi used Holy Barrier -Mirror Force- during the final Duel in the Duel Monsters manga, while he had Black Magician on his field. It being able to be activated in response to both an attack or a monster effect is a reference to how the original Mirror Force was also able to reflect the magical attack resulting from the effect of Yugi's Gandora, the Dragon of Destruction.

Gimmick Puppet

  • Little Soldiers, specifically the one wearing the red uniform in the center, is the doll shown operating Numbers 15: Gimmick Puppet - Giant Killer in its artwork and the ZEXAL anime.
  • Bloody Doll is a reference to the urban legend of the Bloody Mary—a ghost or spirit said to appear in a mirror when chanting her name repeatedly.
  • The Cattle in Cattle Scream (Katoru Sukurīmu) can also be translated as the French quatre ("four"), referring to IV from the ZEXAL anime. The monster itself resembles a brazen bull—an ancient torture device, supposed to have been devised by Perillos of Athens, consisting of a hollow bull fashioned from brass in which victims were imprisoned and burned to death.
  • Fantasix Machina is a portmanteau of fantastic and deus ex machina (Latin for "god from the machine")—a plot device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem in a story is suddenly or abruptly resolved by an unexpected and unlikely occurrence. The fan part of its name is also a pun on fanservice, a phrase commonly said by IV in the anime to mockingly refer to the torment he would inflict upon his opponents. The monster itself heavily resembles IV, and its arm blades are designed to be similar to IV's D-Pad. Its two effects allowing easy use and re-use of the same Rank-Up Magic card is a reference to how, in IV's Duel against Nasch, he activated Rank-Up Magic - Argent Chaos Force three times.
  • Fanatix Machina is similarly a portmanteau of fanatic and deus ex machina, and the monster's design follows the same pattern, albeit being based on IV's sadistic side rather than the well-manored one he falsely presents that Fantasix is based on.
  • Mansion of the Dolls from Hell resembles the art gallery the Arclight family used for their hideout in the anime, and in which III and IV had their Tag Duel against Yuma and Kaito. Dolls from Hell is a kanji subtitle used for Gimmick Puppet in the title for Episode 114 of ZEXAL: "The Sorrowful Duelists: Infernal Rumbling of the Gimmick Puppets!!"
  • Servist seems to be a portmanteau of service (referring to fanservice) and sadist. The coined Japanese phrase used for Playtime is made up of the kanji for "play" and "service," with the latter making it a cruel-sounding pun on funeral service. Its artwork is based on a scene from IV's Duel against Tetsuo and Todoroki, in which he repeatedly used his Giant Killer to destroy their two Xyz Monsters.

Light-and-Darkness Dragon

  • Light-End Sublimation Dragon is a more accurate adaptation of the original Light-End Dragon, a Synchro Monster that was originally a Main Deck monster in the GX manga. Its name comes from Light-End Dragon's attack name in the manga: Shining Sublimation. Its artwork is based on a scene from the manga in which Light-End Dragon is shown attacking directly.
  • Dark-End Evaporation Dragon is a similar adaptation as the above, with its name being a reference to the original Dark-End Dragon's effect name in the GX manga: Dark Evaporation. Its artwork is based on a scene from the manga in which Manjome summons Dark-End Dragon during his second Duel against Judai.
  • Sublimation is the transition of a substance directly from the solid to the gas state, without passing through the liquid state, while evaporation is the process of turning from liquid into vapor.
  • Knight Armed Dragon is a combination of two monsters used by Manjome in the manga: Armed Dragon (Armored Dragon in the English version) and Dragon Knight (Dragonic Knight in the TCG).
  • The official summon chant for Light-and-Darkness Dragon Lord: "O dragon emerging from the rift between light and darkness! Will you fight by my side once more? Fusion Summon! Light-and-Darkness Dragon Lord!"
  • Shadow and Light (Eikō) is a Japanese homophone for glory (also pronounced eikō).

Diabellstar storyline

  • Asteria (lit. "starry one" in Ancient Greek) was the Titan goddess of falling stars and nighttime in Greek mythology. This monster is a child version of Diabellstar the Black Witch, both having names related to stars.
  • Liesette (Rizetto) is the actual name of Diabellze the Original Sin, both having the ze sound in their Japanese names.
  • Silvi is likely the original form of Tainted Treasure of Betrayal - Silvia, with its name coming from Rhea Silvia—the mythical mother of the twins Romulus and Remus, who founded the city of Rome and were suckled by a she-wolf in their infancy.
  • Lucia is the original form of Tainted Treasure of Death - Luciela. The name comes from the Latin word lux (meaning "light").
  • Diabell sounds like diavel (the word for "devil" in the Bolognese dialect).
  • The White Forest Magic/Trap Card artworks feature puppets, shadow figures, and abstract designs, giving them a fairy-tale- and folklore-like atmosphere, likely due to the fact this part of the storyline is set in Diabellstar's childhood past.
  • Whispers of the Tainted Treasure's artwork is based on the forbidden fruit—in Jewish mythology, a name given to the fruit growing in the Garden of Eden which God commands mankind not to eat. In the biblical story, Adam and Eve eat the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and are exiled from Eden, with this act being kn

Demonsmith

  • The Demonsmith theme is based on Dies irae (pronounced DEE-ES EE-REH and Latin for "the Day of Wrath")—a medieval Latin hymn on the Day of Judgment sung in Requiem Masses.
  • Lacrimosa means "to shed tears" in Latin and is the first word of the eighteenth verse in Dies irae, as well as the name for the movement which comprises its eighteenth and nineteenth verses.
  • A requiem is a Mass to honor and remember a dead person. Requiescent Coffin (Chinkonkan) is a pun on the Japanese word for requiem (similarly pronounced chinkonka).
  • Sequentia is Latin for sequence—a musical composition used in some Catholic Masses between the readings. Dies irae is the most famous such sequence.
  • Tractus is the Latin term for a tract—an anthem of scriptural verses formerly replacing the Alleluia in certain penitential and Requiem Masses.
  • Sanctus (Latin for "holy") is an ancient Christian hymn of adoration sung or said immediately before the prayer of consecration in traditional liturgies.
  • In paradisum is a Latin phrase that means "into paradise." It comes from the Latin text of the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass. In paradisum is often sung or recited as part of the final commendation of the deceased, as their soul is entrusted to the care of God and led into paradise.

Raika

  • Himejanome is the Japanese name for the Chinese bushbrown (Mycalesis gotama), an East Palearctic species of satyrine butterfly. Janome means "snake's eye" and is derived from the fact that some species have wings with an eye-like pattern that looks like a snake's eye. The ja in the card name is instead the kanji for "evil" or "wicked."
  • The kanji used for Kurokamitsuki seem to be a portmanteau of Genbu (the Black Tortoise—one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations, usually depicted as a tortoise intertwined with a snake), kamigakari (Japanese for "divine possession"), kamitsukigame (the Japanese name for the commmon snapping turtle), and tsuki (Japanese for "moon").

Tenpai Dragon/Lustrous Phantoms

  • Phantom Fortune (Genroku) is a pun on the Japanese mahjong term genrokuzumi (lit. "Genroku loading")—a cheating technique which involves the player loading tiles into their wall in such a way that they'll be guaranteed to draw them during play, giving them the tiles they need to complete any given yaku (scoring element) or yakuman (limit hand).
  • Flowering of the Lustrous Phantoms (Sangenkaihou) is a play on the Japanese mahjong term rinshankaihō (lit. "flowering on the range")—a specific scenario that can occur during the game when a player draws a tile from the wall to complete a winning hand immediately after declaring a kan (a set of four identical tiles).

Memento

  • Memento Sleepy is based on the early-era OCG Normal Monster Sleepy (Mystical Sheep #2 in the TCG), though its Fusion Summoning effect is more related to Sleepy's different-colored counterpart: Illusion Sheep (Mystical Sheep #1 in the TCG).
  • Mementolan is a portmanteau of Memento and Mictlan, the underworld of Aztec mythology.

Centurion

  • Atry is a corruption of the Latin ātrī (a conjugation of āter), meaning "dull black" or "dark."

Draightron

  • Nu II (pronounced "NEW TWO") is likely based on Nu Draconis (also known as 𝜈 Dra, 𝜈 Draconis, where 𝜈 is the Greek letter "nu"), a double star in the constellation Draco. The respective components are designated 𝜈1 Draconis and 𝜈2 Draconis, this card being more specifically based on the latter.
  • DAD is the abbreviation used for the December Alpha Draconids—a meteor shower associated with the Draco constellation. They typically peak in early December, around the 4th or 5th, and are known for producing bright, colorful meteors.
  • Meteorora is a portmanteau of meteor and aurora.

Madolche

  • Tiarafraise is a portmanteau of tiara and à la fraise (French for "with strawberry/ies"), a French phrase commonly used to denote desserts or drinks with a strawberry flavor.
  • Mignyard (pronounced "MEE-NYAWR") is a portmanteau of the French mignard ("delicate" or "cute" and referring to mignardise—a bite-sized dessert sometimes served at the end of a meal), mi (a Japanese reading for the number three), and nya (Japanese onomatopeia for a cat's meowing). Nyacaron is likewise a portmanteau of nya and macaron—a small round cake with a meringue-like consistency, made with egg whites, sugar, and powdered almonds and consisting of two halves sandwiching a creamy filling.
  • Dessert uses the French pronunciation ("DESSAIR").

Varmonica

  • Vaalar is possibly named after the Valar—angelic deities in J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium.

Miscellaneous

  • Missing Burroughs is likely named after William S. Burroughs—an American writer and visual artist known for his works in postmodernism and science fiction.
  • The Queen of Prayers - Cosmo Queen is named after Cosmo Queen's Prayer, a Ritual card used to summon a Ritual Monster version of Cosmo Queen in the early Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters video games. Its effect of searching a Field Magic Card is a reference to how Cosmo Queen had the ability to change the terrain or playing field in some of those video games.
  • Shibirerudake is a portmanteau of shibireru (a Japanese idiom meaning "to get excited" or "to get the tingles from an electric shock") and shibiretake (the Japanese name for Psilocybe venenata—a species of psychoactive mushroom). Because it's read dake instead of the more standard take used for mushroom names, its name can also be interpreted as saying "It's just tingling."
  • Disablaster is a portmanteau of disable (referring to its negation effects) and blaster. Faultless Turret (Mukōhōtō) is a pun on the Japanse term for negation (mukō), with the second kanji having been replaced for the one meaning "hole," giving it the meaning of something with no flaws in its design.
  • Mulchummy is a portmanteau of multi- and chummy (meaning "friendly"). Purulia is likely a portmanteau of purupuru (Japanese onomatopoeia for "jiggling" or "wobbling") and Aurelia (referring to Aurelia aurita, the common jellyfish).
  • Dora Dra (Dora Dora) is a counterpart to Poke Dra (Poki Draco in the TCG), with a dora being a Japanese mahjong term for a special tile that increases the value of specific sets or hands. It is revealed at the beginning of the game and can change during the game based on specific rulesets or actions. Dora dora is also used as an informal term to refer to a hand that contains two dora tiles.
  • Menkomori is a portmanteau of menko—a traditional Japanese children's game which involves collecting and flipping small, rectangular cards, also called menko, to try and flip over the opponent's cards—and kōmori (Japanese for "bat").
  • May Blues Leopard (Gogatsubyou) is a pun on the Japanese term May blues (gogatsubyō, lit. "May disease")—the blues experienced by Japanese college freshmen or workplace recruits shortly after beginning school or work, a phenomenon that occurs during the transition after the new fiscal year starts and a week-long nationwide holiday—and the kanji hyō/byō meaning "leopard." Fittingly, its ATK-changing effects revolve around multiples of five.
  • DPA stands for data protection authority—an independent public authority that supervises, through investigative and corrective powers, the application of the European Union's data protection law. Jeanne d'Armure seems to be a portmanteau of Jeanne d'Arc (the French spelling for Joan of Arc—a patron saint of France, honored as a defender of the French nation), gendarme (pronounced "ZHAWN-DARM," a member of a gendarmerie—a military force with law enforcement duties among the civilian population), and armure (French for "armor").
  • Phoboscovoth is named after phobos (an Ancient Greek word meaning "fear" and the root of the English word "phobia"). Phobos is also the name for the Greek god of fear. Its name ending in "-oth" is possibly a reference to the names of several Cthulhu Mythos deities, as this monster is very Lovecraftian in appearance.
  • Illumistil (Irumistiru) is a portmanteau of illumination, Irminsul (Old Saxon for "great pillar")—a sacred, pillar-like object attested as playing an important role in the Germanic paganism of the Saxons—and mistilteinn (Icelandic and Old Norse for "mistletoe")—the name of a legendary sword from Norse mythology. Irminsul is sometimes compared to the Norse Yggdrasil—the central sacred tree of Norse cosmology, said to encompass the entirety of the universe—due to both Irmin (Jörmunr in Old Norse) and Yggr being two of the names of Odin.
  • Silhouette Conjurer (Kagehōshi) is written with the same kanji as the Japanese word for silhouette (kagebōshi) but read differently, with hōshi possibly referring to an archaic Japanese word for a sorcerer.
  • Vesper (the Roman equivalent of Hesperus) is the mythological personification of the evening star—the planet Venus when it appears in the west (evening sky), after sunset.
  • Hyperspatial Matter Translocator is a seemingly more accurate re-adaptation of Seto Kaiba's Hyperspatial Matter Transporter (Interdimensional Matter Transporter in the TCG), which in the Duel Monsters anime/manga was a Magic Card and simply transported the chosen monster to a different location of any kind (primarily in order to avoid an attack which targeted it). This is somewhat similar to how this card's effect temporarily banishes a monster before bringing it back immediately. Its artwork is also based on the scene from the manga in which Kaiba uses Transporter to transport his XYZ - Dragon Cannon.
  • Be-Back Site (BBS) is a pun on the term bulletin board system (also initialized as BBS)—a type of computer system, now largely obsolete (though still somewhat common in Japan), used to exchange messages and data over a telecommunications network. The name is likely also a reference to Be-Bop High School—a popular Japanese delinquent manga that ran from 1983 to 2003. (Kiriban, which appears in the artwork, is based on the pop-culture stereotype of the Japanese delinquent girl.)
  • Dominus is the Latin word for "master."
  • Hat-Sporting Silhouettes (Kagebōshi) is, in Japanese, a portmanteau of kagebōshi ("silhouette") and bōshi ("hat").
  • Three as One's artwork is a reference to how the Ojama Brothers performed the effect of Ojama Delta Hurricane!! in the GX anime.

2024.05.01 09:25 shara564 22F [F4F] Finally reaching out to you.

Hello everyone, I have been stuck in my room studying for my finals last week and now it's finally over. With this, I have 3 months of summer break to enjoy (maybe potentially with a special someone I find here)
So about me, I am the straight looking Asian girl with black hair and eyes, who sits at the front of the class and get A's. Yep that's about it.(I am also short, 5') When I'm not being a nerd and studying, I like to read, write poems, walk, hike and play sports. I have a soft spot for masc lesbians but I'm open to others. I also love gardening, traveling, cooking and occasionally some gaming. I can be shy at first but I'm pretty good at conversations(I think 🤔).
I am not particularly looking for a type. As long as you are a good human being and have a healthy heart and mind. And if you happen to be on the other side of the world.. .. don't worry I will gladly wreck my sleep schedule for you 😉 (I'm an engineering student, my sleep schedule is a already a mess so ..)
I am looking for a girlfriend but I'll gladly be your friend too. NO NSFW CHAT PLEASE. Thank you for reading through, I'll be waiting for your chat. Here's an icebreaker, 'What's your love language?'
Edit: If I ever find the 'one' then I'll delete this post so as long as this post is up, you can DM me.

2024.05.01 00:17 Grand_Alps9214 The end …

I guess this was a quick divorce, initiated last year November and ending now at the start of may. Initiation was from her side. Wrote a few posts.
The first few months were tough during the Negotiations but since mid march life was good. I think. Anyhow, she isn’t living rent free in my head for a while and I’m doing extremely well - therapy, happy, sport, enjoy the new city, etc.
Until today that is…
When I gave her some thought when I went to Spa, that I took her to. She was on my mind whilst relaxing there. And as the divorce papers will be signed in a few days I wanted to reflect on her and just close the chapter - hence allowed time for her in my mind. And re signing the papers I am excited about and can’t wait to be officially divorced.
However. On my way home I found this poem randomly on Instagram and started crying uncontrollably. I really am happy this is over, that papers are getting signed and that she is out of my life. But god damn, every time I read this poem i cry and then get softer emotions towards her…
Poem below: ——————————
I'm just so glad you exist.
When I say I miss you, I don't mean it in some sad miserable way, but in a way that honors that connection we had. Not in some regretful way, or not even in some way that says I wanna see you again, but I just truly miss you.
This isn't coming from a negative place, and you aren't the only thing in my mind anymore, But there are moments which I steal away and think, wow.. You would have loved to see this.
This isn't a: I wanna be friends again.. Or even a: I want you in my life again.. Because I know that we both know deep in our hearts That we aren't meant to be, and that's okay.
And as tragic as our story was, I hope you know that; every memory of us has infinite value to me, and couldn't be replaced for the world. I will love and cherish every single experience we had, but also honor that memory, by moving forward with acceptance.
I know there's an infinite amount of words that have gone unsaid, but I know that no words could say more than the silence between us.
That being said, I'm just so glad you exist.

The anti-nazi tradition of Hardcore Techno
The Hardcore Techno community has a long tradition of opposing, resisting, and fighting fascism, nazism, and similar right-wing tendencies.
It is noteworthy that, in that regard, there has been an alliance made up of a huge variety of different social groups within the Hardcore scene:
otherwise "unpolitical" people, working class kids with a dislike against nazis, migrants, LGBTQIA+ folk, middle class anti right wing activists, squatters and free party people, "gabberpunks", street fighters, full-blooded communists and anarchists; all united in their hate against the atrocious monster that is fascism.
It's nice to see that these people, who would often disagree and argue with each other on a lot of topics, do all agree that fascism is a political horror and not a mere "opinion", a horror that needs to be fought, chased, circled in, and destroyed.
Slogan and logo originated by Mokum
Of course, at the same time, the extreme right always tried to infiltrate and corrupt the Hardcore scene; like they always try with any "youth culture". This was a problem in the past, and might be a growing problem in the future.
But for this feature, we want to look at the history of the resistance against fascism within Hardcore Techno culture.
There were campaigns, and slogans such as Mokum's "United Gabbers against Racism & Fascism"; anti-racist messages were included in vinyl cover art, booklets, or even etched into the run-outs of the record; anti fascist symbols and imagery was a common sight on flyers for hardcore, speedcore and breakcore parties of all types. And many notorious nazis who insisted in showing up to an actual gabber party were "shown the door" in a "very physical way", or to put it another way: many fights were won.
Now, let's turn the focus to the actual music: tracks that showcase this very topic in their sonic content.
1. Party Animals - Die Nazi Scum (feat. Rob Gee) (Whiplash Mix)
Mokum ran the campaign "United Gabber against Racism & Fascism" in the 90s (as mentioned above); this track, which was released on the label, too, is a good example of that mindset.
The Party Animals team up with Hardcore Legend Rob Gee to deliver a strong messages to the nazis.

2. PCP Project - N.R.N.F.O. (Nazi Rednecks Fuck Off)
"This song is not againt skinheads. It's against people who are stupid in the head. [...] Nazi Rednecks Fuck Off".
This track by PCP says it like it is.
It also addresses the "defense" by many right wing Gabbers: that those who confront the fascist thread would confuse "harmless, unpolitical skinheads" with real nazis. No, skinheads are not the problem at all. The problem are the actual nazis.
With a release date of 1991, it's one of the earliest signs of hardcore opposition against fascists.

3. DJ Freak Vs. Noize Creator - The Anti Nazi Pack A2
The extreme Hardcore / Speedcore scene was even more outspoken against the right wing, and this is a good proof of that.
DJ Freak and Noize Creator stir up a symphony of speed, noise, and distortion against the nazi menace.

4. Chosen Few - Chosen Anthem (Against Racism)
Mokum once more. An early hardcore anthem against racism (released in 1993). and a very good one at that!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9WnOZzA9w8
5. Micropoint - Anti Nazi Vendetta (Part 1)
La Résistance fought bravely against the real world nazis in world war II, and modern France has a strong opposition against them too.
and in the teknival and free party adjacent french hardcore / noisecore scene, this stance is even more prominent.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dndHLHTJNdE
6. Alec Empire - Hetzjagd auf Nazis
One of the classic anti nazi anthems, isn't it? An early breakcore outing, sporting breakneck beats and hoover madness - an onslaught on the senses, and on the conscience too, i hope!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5dJuIAUzoQ
7. Bazooka - Waz Gibtz Noyze ? (FukDaNazisMix)
another example of the anti nazi current within the then emerging hardcore / speedcore scene.
a strong statement, wrapped within a high quality (and quite noisy) track on shockwave recordings.
this track samples Paul Celan's "Todesfuge", one of the most important german-language poems about the very real horrors of fascism.
