Chritmas (Gothic Christmas)

Merry Chritmas (Gothic Element)

https://preview.redd.it/titibt5u5lzc1.png?width=2912&format=png&auto=webp&s=1c6141921d722830d496ad7865eabb895a15e8ee
Chritmas offers a fascinating blend of gothic and spooky elements with traditional Christmas and Yule traditions, centered around "Chrit Ghost," the gift-giving ghost. Here's an extended concept incorporating these themes:
  1. Chrit Ghost:
    • Chrit Ghost is a spectral figure cloaked in midnight black, with glowing eyes with moose skull and a hauntingly kind demeanor.
    • Instead of Santa Claus, Chrit Ghost is the benevolent spirit who visits homes on Chritmas Eve, leaving mysterious gifts under shadowy Chritmas trees.
  2. Decorations:
    • Gothic-inspired decorations adorn Chritmas trees, with dark ornaments like miniature coffins, black roses, and silver spiderwebs.
    • Candles flicker in eerie candelabras, casting dim, flickering light reminiscent of old haunted mansions.
    • Wreaths made of dried black roses and thorny branches hang on doors, adding a touch of macabre elegance.
  3. Feast of Shadows:
    • The Chritmas feast, known as the Feast of Shadows, features dark delicacies like blood-red velvet cake, roasted black garlic potatoes, and mulled wine with a hint of cloves and cinnamon.
    • Tables are draped in midnight blue and adorned with candelabras, skull-shaped goblets, and tarnished silverware.
  4. Chritmas Carols:
    • Carols take on a haunting tone, with lyrics that weave tales of ghosts, witches, and ancient mysteries. Songs like "O Come, All Ye Spirits" and "The Haunted Bells of Chritmas" set the mood.
    • Musicians play eerie melodies on violins, harpsichords, and haunting flutes, adding to the spectral ambiance.
  5. Chritmas Eve Rituals:
    • Families gather around a crackling fireplace to tell ghost stories, sharing tales of apparitions, restless spirits, and mysterious happenings.
    • Children leave offerings of dark chocolates and dried fruits for Chrit Ghost, hoping to receive ethereal gifts in return.
  6. Gifts from the Otherworld:
    • Chrit Ghost leaves gifts that reflect the gothic and mystical themes of Chritmas, such as antique pocket watches, spellbooks filled with secrets, and enchanted crystals.
    • Handcrafted items like gothic jewelry, leather-bound journals, and ornate masks hold special meaning in this ethereal exchange.
  7. Yule Traditions:
    • Yule celebrations intertwine with Chritmas, incorporating ancient pagan customs such as burning Yule logs, decorating with holly and mistletoe, and honoring the rebirth of the sun.
    • The Chritmas tree becomes a symbol of life and renewal, adorned with symbols of nature, magic, and the cycle of seasons.
  8. Spirit of Chritmas:
    • Chritmas embraces the beauty of darkness and light, blending gothic aesthetics with the warmth of togetherness, generosity, and the joy of sharing stories and traditions.
    • It's a time to honor the mysteries of the night, the spirits of the past, and the magic that surrounds us in both the seen and unseen realms.
Chritmas, with its Gothic and spooky twist on traditional Chritmas and Yule customs, invites us to embrace the enchanting shadows and mysteries that lie beyond the veil, celebrating the beauty of the unknown and the timeless spirit of giving and connection.

Chritmas Cake (Traditonal Cake)

Creating a Chritmas Cake with a black cranberry theme sounds intriguing! Here's a recipe for a delicious Black Cranberry Cake that combines the rich flavors of dark ingredients with the festive touch of cranberries:
Ingredients:
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup blackberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 cup dried cranberries
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)
Instructions:
  1. Prepare the Ingredients:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. Mix the Dry Ingredients:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Mix until well combined.
  3. Prepare the Fruit Mixture:
    • In a separate bowl, place the blackberries and dried cranberries. Pour the boiling water over the berries and let them soak for about 10 minutes. Drain the berries and set aside.
  4. Make the Cake Batter:
    • In the bowl of a stand mixer or using a hand mixer, beat the vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined.
    • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a smooth batter forms.
    • Fold in the soaked blackberries and cranberries into the batter gently until evenly distributed.
  5. Bake the Cake:
    • Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
    • Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  6. Decorate (Optional):
    • Once the cake has cooled, you can dust the top with powdered sugar for a snowy effect, adding a festive touch to your Chritmas cake.
Slice and serve your delicious Black Cranberry Chritmas Cake as a delightful dessert for your Chritmas celebrations. The combination of dark flavors and tangy cranberries is sure to be a hit!

Cobweb Tree Topper (DIY)

A Cobweb Tree Topper for Chritmas adds a spooky and gothic touch to your holiday decor. Here's how you can make one:
Materials Needed:
  1. Black or dark-colored wire
  2. Black feathers or faux spider webs
  3. Small plastic spiders or spider ornaments
  4. Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  5. Black spray paint (optional)
  6. Wire cutters
  7. Ribbon or string for hanging (optional)
Instructions:
  1. Create the Base:
    • Using the wire, shape a cone or pyramid structure to serve as the base of your cobweb tree topper. You can start with a smaller cone and gradually widen it as you go up.
    • Secure the wire pieces together using hot glue to form a sturdy base.
  2. Add the Cobweb Design:
    • Take the black feathers or faux spider webs and drape them over the wire structure. You can create a cobweb-like pattern by crisscrossing the feathers or webs in a random, intricate manner.
    • Secure the feathers or webs in place with hot glue as needed to ensure they stay attached to the wire base.
  3. Enhance with Spiders:
    • Attach small plastic spiders or spider ornaments to the cobweb design using hot glue. Place them strategically to create a creepy, crawling effect on the cobweb tree topper.
    • You can also add some larger spiders crawling down the sides of the wire structure for a more dramatic look.
  4. Optional Spray Paint:
    • If desired, you can spray paint the entire cobweb tree topper with black paint to give it a darker, more uniform appearance. Allow the paint to dry completely before proceeding.
  5. Attach Hanging Mechanism (Optional):
    • If you want to hang the cobweb tree topper from the tree, attach a ribbon or string to the top of the wire structure using hot glue. Make sure it's securely attached and can support the weight of the topper.
  6. Place on Top of the Tree:
    • Once your cobweb tree topper is complete and any paint or glue has dried, carefully place it on top of your Chritmas tree. Ensure it's balanced and securely attached to the tree's tip.
Your Cobweb Tree Topper for Chritmas is now ready to add a touch of gothic elegance and spooky charm to your holiday decorations. It's sure to stand out and create a unique focal point for your Chritmas festivities.

MoonDrop Golden Ages 1979 TWS Earphones Review
Another chance. I decided to give MoonDrop’s TWS earphones another chance, and it was a tough decision because MoonDrop Alice were shamefully poor in terms of connection stability and proprietary software.
When it comes to MoonDrop Golden Ages 1979, which I’m gonna talk about today, my attention was drawn to their design, low cost, and a planar driver. And I also had a glimmer of hope that at least MoonDrop managed to bring the software to the users-don’t-get-sick-and-tired state, after all.
https://preview.redd.it/zz8tointzjzc1.jpg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c0936f26d1c692c8feed95cbbc3022af992e155
I got Golden Ages (hereinafter — GA) for $80 a month ago, and now they already go for $75.
This review in my blog: https://boizoff.com/language/en/moondrop-golden-ages-1979-tws-earphones-review/

What’s included

The earphones come in a brightly decorated large box.
https://preview.redd.it/h7mb3muuzjzc1.jpg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1ff467edf04065676a514b5967a59e377dfcebf7
What do you get:
  1. The earphones;
  2. A charging case;
  3. A protective cover for the charging case;
  4. A USB-A to USB Type-C cable;
  5. 4 pairs of eartips of the same type in different sizes.
There are some papers underneath, including a quality assurance service report.

Design, assembly, technology

TWS earphones start with a charging case, which is quite large and stylish when it comes to GA.
The design and color choice is no accident: in 1979, the first Sony Walkman TPS-L2 cassette player was released, which looked like this:
Source: theverge.com
Therefore, there is an image of sort of a TPS-L2 window and a specific left-pointing arrow at the front of the case (the film was rewound from the right reel to the left one if you are not in the know) and an orange pairing button at the back of it.
https://preview.redd.it/9a331jo10kzc1.jpg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=461bf149090451cbd811bc00f4041f6f666254a3
There is a single green indicator diode at the front, too. The USB Type-C charging port has been moved to the bottom face.
The case interior is painted orange. The earphones fit in tightly, hold on to the case with magnets, and are not loose.
https://preview.redd.it/vi7izb930kzc1.jpg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f3f94ad3cfaf57cbc8bc5860f3521bce02833b82
You can pull (with noticeable effort) a transparent protective cover on the case, equipped with an eye for attaching a lanyard.
https://preview.redd.it/nq7nnhi40kzc1.jpg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c8de849960b8592d328fb8b4070ff6e2a7c4dfde
The case is well-made; it feels pleasantly smooth, opens and closes without creaking, with a mid-elite click.
Let’s move on to the earphones and start with their technological features. The GA use a 13 mm planar driver. The manufacturer focuses on the dual suspension system implemented in this driver, as well as 4 times higher efficiency as compared to dynamic drivers of the same size.
The earphones are made of gray plastic, with some themed pictures coated on the ‘sticks’ on the outside. And what’s the main, they have L and R on them. There are microphones at the ends of the stems that capture the user’s speech, one for each earphone.
https://preview.redd.it/mk8x47e60kzc1.jpg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dffee9100bb5d172cc6d5e22a5cf5cb67a811fd3
The compensation hole is neatly covered with a mesh and oriented upwards.
https://preview.redd.it/iidh9fm70kzc1.jpg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=11f0bf033b665fea23657c5bbfa4109844b6ae4e
The oval-shaped sound duct is extremely short, covered with a mesh, too. There are additional holes on the inside; I suspect these are additional microphones for ANC.
https://preview.redd.it/05z973t80kzc1.jpg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=27d9850f4a979245b6f5e18f69149633e41b0d88
There are charge contacts at the ends of the ‘sticks’.
https://preview.redd.it/addkd73a0kzc1.jpg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=686aba1b9ecd549d3f49be122817d3563c758768
The earphones are made quite neatly, but they feel cheap: the pictures are of poor quality, and joints and burrs are visible on the plastic. The enclosures are painted, which immediately raises the question of their durability. But, as always, it is necessary to keep in mind the product price. In terms of visibility and recognition, everything is just fine: once you see them in someone’s ears, you will never mistake them for other TWS.

Hardware and software

Before describing the functionality of the native Android application itself, I should tell about some ins and outs, that is to say, how you can update the application and firmware so that you can see everything that is shown below.
The algorithm is as follows:
  1. Follow the link https://www.pgyer.com/SrNXCM—there is the application MoonDrop Link 2.0, version 1.0.50c-240429. (On the manufacturer’s website, there is version 1.0.0-bla-bla-bla.)
  2. We need to install it, launch it, go to the GA settings on the OTA tab, and select firmware version 1.1.0.
  3. Time for an update. It’s working like a charm.
So, the application starts from the device selection screen. Let’s choose GA.
https://preview.redd.it/ra5xjm6c0kzc1.jpg?width=505&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=56a9c5cc6a3c21375c7acd799586ae72f42caef8
On the first EQ tab, you can select one out of 5 preset equalizers.
https://preview.redd.it/z6fno9if0kzc1.jpg?width=505&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ef25107dd9ae5dfdd004f15c1bf362958a6ba2d4
On the ANC tab, you can control the following values:
  • Noise reduction mode—acoustic transparency, all off, or active noise reduction is on.
  • Enable or exclude any of these three modes from the settings rotation.
  • Set the mode switching sequence.
https://preview.redd.it/o7lgd75i0kzc1.jpg?width=505&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1d0eeea5ce1943605d92842b275d6f1482ebb3f8
The Setting tab provides access to selecting the hardware gain mode, as well as enabling support for LDAC and LC3 codecs.
https://preview.redd.it/go16k7rj0kzc1.jpg?width=505&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e8493be33ca358ad41f949fe3c4c5a06ee5a415f
On the OTA tab, you can select one of the firmware options available online or choose a file from the local storage.
https://preview.redd.it/0tm6eurm0kzc1.jpg?width=505&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=958d5b89aac97991fb7a3824efa5bbb5687d20d6
The last Touch tab hosts control gesture settings.
https://preview.redd.it/9j32pwoo0kzc1.jpg?width=505&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5bb51cec5afdf106043ec033627904ee54cf6f06

Ergonomics, usage experience

Hardware

Good points:
  1. The earphones are stably connected to the source (when using LDAC, I tested them with Samsung S23 Ultra and Hiby R6III) and do not lose connection, and this is already half the battle.
  2. The earphones are easy to pull out of the case, they’re made for comfort of your fingers.
  3. Gestures are recognized and processed without any problems.
  4. Active noise reduction works, and it works quite well, at around the level of Soundcore Libery 3 Pro.
Ins and outs:
  1. The earphones ‘sit’ very tightly in the case, which heavily limits options for alternative eartips: 2-flange SpinFit, large Tangzu Tang Sancai, standard ‘foams’ and many more eartips just do not let you close the case. I’ll tell about the eartips in detail below.
  2. The microphones are disgusting, much worse than anything in the same ballpark.
  3. IPX rating is not stated. However, I had functional training wearing them, sweated a lot, and the earphones survived. But I’ve only tried it once.
Lastly, there is my personal problem, which is my beard. When the acoustic transparency was on, it turned out to be impossible for me to use GA because the ‘sticks’ of the earphones touched my beard hair all the time and rustled nastily.
As for the fit and enclosure geometry, I tend to regard them as normal (as to my own ears). It is impossible to forget that GA are in your ears, that is, to stop feeling them, as it works with Sony Linkbuds S. It is even difficult to wear them for 4-5 hours as the enclosures begin putting unpleasant pressure on your auricles. However, as for 3-4 hours of listening, they suit me personally quite well.
It would be wrong to make any generalizations out of this very personal case.
To sum up: the earphones have no problems with connection, and there is no reason to hope for the appearance of any good microphones in TWS (at the current stage of technological development) for any money in the world.

Software

The application has started working much better – it is more or less stable, it is logically organized, and it just works, after all. I’d like to specially mention very funny notification sounds voiced in a kawaii girlish manner, which was done by Mitsuki Yuki, the MoonDrop mascot (see the photo of the kit, the picture on the box). Compared to the nightmare that was in the days of MoonDrop Alice, the current version of Link 2.0 is the apex of grace and convenience.
However, this is only if you compare Link 2.0 versions with each other.
And if we take into account any competitors, then some limited capabilities come to light:
  • no N-band equalizer, let alone a parametric one. There are predetermined presets only;
  • no notification volume setting;
  • no wizard to make your own equalizer;
  • no implemented function to automatically enable acoustic transparency;
  • no connection to two devices;
  • no sleep timer setting in idle mode;
  • no way to control the volume using gestures;
  • no way to switch equalizer presets using gestures.
Besides, in order to upgrade to firmware 1.1.0, you need to google really badly and make it through to the method that I described above. There is also lousy English, but that already seems to be hopeless.
On the other hand, GA and those TWS that can do all of the above are apples and oranges in terms of their pricing.

Quick specifications overview

  • Design: closed-back ‘earbuds’.
  • Drivers: 1 planar driver.
  • Weight of a single earpiece: 5 grams.
  • Weight of the case with the earphones inside: 46 grams.
  • Bluetooth version: 5.3.
  • Dust and moisture protection: none.
  • Audio transmission protocols: SBC, AAC, LDAC, LC3.
  • Earphone battery life: approx. 5 hours when using LDAC and medium gain level.
  • Earphone charging time: approx. 1 hour.
  • Case charging time: approx. 1.5 hours.

Subjective sound impression

Since the earphones have 5 equalizer presets, we need to talk about them point-by-point. Surprisingly, 4 out of 5 presets are not bad. They are frankly listenable and are a little more ‘like or dislike’ and a little less ‘failed tuning or OK tuning’. Only the Secret preset sounds as if someone fell asleep on the keyboard when tuning: this is a totally, mysteriously distorted sound.
So, I stayed with the Basshead preset for the outside and the Reference one for home. By ear, these two presets differ only in the amount of subbass, which you would want more in a noisy urban environment, especially as GA has certain problems with sound insulation.
GA sound… great. They sound just phenomenally good and ‘right’ for TWS earphones in general and even more so for such inexpensive TWS earphones.
In terms of subbass and bass tuning, MoonDrop bucked the trend and did not ‘pile up’ 120 Hz on them so that they would beat and shake on your head, leaving all frequencies to the left behind. In GA, the subbass dominates the bass. They are well separated and do not ‘overlap’ each other. I can assume that the frequency response in this part is linear, but rotated clockwise. The choice of eartips is very important: if you do not hear subbass or it is subtle and not deep, try different eartips (see the next section).
The lower middle and middle sections are just great, I don’t know how else to describe them. They are full-fledged, smooth, informative, and everything is just fine with them.
The upper middle section reveals a little fly in the ointment: GA sound a bit unnaturally in this frequency range, a little shriller than necessary. And that’s because the volume at 4 kHz should be lower than one at 2.7 kHz. GA have them equal, or even 4 kHz may outvoice 2.7. This gives rise to sharpness, sort of ‘detail’, but also artificiality of the sound. I need to underline: this is about a fine nuance and not about a fatal tuning error.
And further up, to the right of the frequency response graph, everything is fine up to nearly 11-12 kHz, where the listener will find the nastiest surprise in GA tuning – a gargantuan mountain. The ‘mountain’ can be heard, and rustling and ‘crackling’ appear on some tracks that actively use this range. Some people do like it, but I don’t. The disaster is not immense, it is still a category of ‘I don’t give a shit pretty much’/’you can get used to it’, as you like. And it’s still infinitely better than, say, Fiio FW5, true story.
The feeling of the virtual sound stage is realistic, but it is more deep rather than wide. There is no incredible sound source positioning.
Thus, I am inclined to rate the GA tuning as outstanding, despite that annoying Qomolangma at 11 kHz. I don’t remember any manufacturer setting up TWS earphones so well, so deliberately.

Eartip choice

Eartips for GA are a pain in the ass because of two facts:
  1. the GA sound depends on the eartips A LOT and, at the same time,
  2. the choice of eartips for GA is strictly limited to ‘short’ models because the charging case will not close otherwise.
And I would like to change the eartips because the ones provided do not ensure really good sound insulation, which is why there is not enough subbass, and ANC works not really effectively.
The good news is that usual ’round’ eartips can be pulled on oval sound ducts of the earphones quite well.
My list of what you can put on GA, with the earphones fitting in the case:
  1. JBL Project Rock;
  2. Whizzer ET100AB;
  3. Tangzu Tang Sancai – Wide bore;
  4. SpinFit OMNI;
  5. Zhulinniao Zhu Rythme;
  6. Sony EP-NI1000 (eartips WF-1000xm4).
All kinds of SpinFit CP100, CP240, ‘foams’ by KZ and many other models will go with the earphones, but not with the case, so to speak.
How does the GA sound change in dependence to the eartips? Radically:
https://preview.redd.it/rt468wyy0kzc1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=285417bd9ebb4921aae0e3c500de26637d9befca
The fit depth also has an additive effect, although with such an earphone form factor it can be varied within very small limits:
https://preview.redd.it/ukjrnor01kzc1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b639fcc1c393fb5ea290b24808d68b61eed26704
Personally, I chose Tangzu Tang Sancai – Wide bore. They turned out to be the most comfortable for me and the closest to the eartips provided in terms of sounding. But they insulate much better.

Measurements

The headphones were used with the Hiby R6III player (LDAC). A measuring rig conforms to the IEC60318-4 standard. The smoothing is indicated on the graphs. I’ve described the limitations of the rig and the headphones measurements in general in this article.
This is the basic frequency response graph for GA with ANC turned on, medium gain, and the Reference preset:
https://preview.redd.it/fl1111o31kzc1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb976ea7a64fc9abdf8cbe7ca774470c2115bb68
And it’s an absolutely brilliant setup because:
  1. the subbass is between the Harman curve and the neutral curve;
  2. the middle corresponds to the Harman curve;
  3. the upper frequency range falls below the neutral curve;
  4. it all starts looking ill at 12 kHz.
The upshot is tuning, which sound is more fun compared to completely neutral one, but it’s still not as V-shaped as Harman. It is very smooth, with 5-6 kHz correctly ‘suppressed’, but with 4 kHz raised, which negatively affects the sound.
And there are immediate answers to basic questions: is sound delivery different with ANC on an off? No.
https://preview.redd.it/x0lj3cy51kzc1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f0c8d1d2e7c59d2380297311bcad9db8294db52e

2024.05.08 19:33 JaySpeaking MLB DFS pitchers/stacks for DraftKings - 5/8/24

Pitching GPP core:
C. Sale, 9800 – Good matchup against the Red Sox. I think we can officially say Sale is back. He’s just been great to start the season. The K-rate is sitting at a healthy 29% and he faces a Red Sox team that struggles against lefties. He’s my SP1.
C. Paddack, 6500 – Good matchup against the Mariners. “Arms against the Mariners” is going to be a theme all year. I don’t think Paddack is the greatest pitcher by any means, but he is cheap, and the matchup against Seattle is always positive for strikeouts for serviceable arms and especially for righties. I like it enough to make him my SP2. Pairing him with Sale (it’s double “Chris” Day apparently), you can build some nice looking lineups with his savings.
Pitching cash core:
C. Sale, 9800
A. Civale, 8800 – Good matchup against the White Sox. Civale’s improved as a pitcher this season; has been allowing some runs, but I am not too worried about that against the White Sox. He’s relatively safe on this slate and I do have interest.
Top Stacks:
  1. SFG – Another Coors slate so we have to deal with Giants chalk in our lives again. I will be under the field, because that’s how I play Coors, but you can do with this information whatever you want.
  2. NYY – Arrighetti’s a fly ball guy and the Yankees have a lot of guys that like to hit the ball in the air with power. Soto in particular looks good to me, and of course you can throw Judge and Stanton in there with him.
  3. TBR – Flexen’s always been a pitcher that I have liked to target bats against. The Rays offense isn’t the best in the league by any means, but this is the kind of matchup they could show up for.

2024.05.07 21:04 superdstar56 Setup Mobula7 & Radiomaster Pocket - First Time + BT2.0 and Bluejay upgrades

I got my Mobula7 1s about a week ago, and I've spent every waking hour trying to get it to work. I finally got it up and flying and I flew about 40 packs, broke 2 motors off the frame and broke the antenna. I have more screws and a replacement antenna in the mail. It is even more fun than I was expecting.
If I was more weak of heart, I would have given up on the setup process. I am in IT and my job requires a lot of research, trial and error, and tech research. I was following YouTube videos, but so many settings and things have changed on new updates, I wanted to give my exact setup directions so someone like me can find this and see what I did to get mine to work. Looking back I probably spent...15-18 hours trying to get it all right. I set up and re-set up a lot of things.
**Starting out in FPV Takes a LOT of knowledge and setup of equipment. Follow along and watch ALL of the videos, sometimes multiple times. I found myself finding an answer by re-watching and going over the steps multiple times and catching something I'd missed. This is a time commitment, setting up your quad and your radio is going to take A COUPLE OF HOURS AT LEAST! So get comfortable.
Here's what I started with:
Happymodel Mobula7 1s - Analog 0802 20k X12 ELRS
Radiomaster Pocket (I wish now I had started with a Boxer, but I will probably save for a Boxer Max. For $65, the Pocket has been great, and now I'll have two when I get the one I want, sweet)
EV800D Goggles - For $100, these are useable to start out
BetaFPV BT2.0 Pigtails - get that juice
Soldering Iron (I got a 60w all in one kit and I wish I got the TS100
8x Tattu 1s BT2.0 450mah HV batteries - charge to 4.35v
ViFly Whoopstor 3 - highly recommend, charges 6 batteries quickly
64gb SD card for goggles
Skyzone USB OTA Receiver - does every new fpv pilot buy one of these so other people can watch?
2x Meteor75 Pro Frames (everyone and their dog recommends the M75P frame as the most durable, I got extra to build a slightly "larger" build for outdoor - You can use 45mm props with the Meteor75 Pro
Gemfan blades - mine have chipped already, but these don't really break
**After flying for 2 days, I'm ordering 100 M1.4x3 screws ($7) because the motor screws break off from the frame when flying/crashing. They give you extra but I've used them up and I'm on the last ones. I'm also ordering these 75mm u.fl antennas because I've broken the ceramic tip off of the antenna and if I go behind a wall I lose signal. No big deal, a few bucks. UPDATE - after flying about 20 packs, the antenna is better than nothing but not as good as the flimsy original one, but i did bend it a lot. I have a truerc singularity in the mail.
Lets start with the radio:
Radiomaster Pocket - (I'm sure this same thing works with Radiomaster brand radios, I followed along with people on the boxer and zorro - also if you don't have a radio I have to vote against the zorro for the small batteries)
Follow Captain Drone explain and setup switches (STOP at 8:30, where he starts binding. Betaflight update lets you bind from your computer. Start watching again when your drone is connected and the firmware is updated. Later he will walk you through setting up the "arm" switch and flight modes.
Download the ExpressLRS Configurator from Github
**I struggled to bind my Mobula for a long time until I realized that the video and the walkthrough on Github both failed to mention the "packet rate" setting in the radio menu when you press the ELRS lua script. The default is D500, and MOBULA WILL ONLY BIND on the 500hz setting. Anything with a letter in front and you will wonder what is wrong.
Update your Radiomaster internal ELRS lua script to have your binding phrase. Follow these exact instructions, but set the correct packet rate!
Plug in your quad and connect to betaflight (explained in Mobula section)
Go to the Receivers tab, set SPI reciever mode, with CRSF, and the binding phrase you put in the lua script. Save and reboot
Either press "bind" or go to the CLI and type "bind_rx"
Run ELRS lua script and press Bind. There should be a C in the top right corner. Your radio is bound.
Mobula7 1s - Setup and bind to Betaflight
Soldering BT2.0 connector - (gives you more power and more amps, highly recommend) This was my first attempt with a soldering iron. I watched Bardwells 30 minute tutorial and it helped tremendously. I started at 300C and it was too cold, I got the positive off but not the negative. The thru holes are difficult and so small. You have to hold the ground for quite a while for it to come out. I was holding the board and it got very hot, to the point I thought I messed it up. I tried again later with a hotter iron and doing quick 1-2 second bursts and it went much smoother. Take your time, line everything up. I successfully did it, but I should have practiced first.
Download Betaflight configurator (the web version didn't work for me on my Windows machine)
Plug in your quad and let Betaflight (BF) find it.
**SAVE YOUR CONFIG - go to the "presets" tab and Save Backup to someplace you will remember. After you flash the firmware, you have to reload the backup
Go to firmware flasher - Auto detect or the Mobula7 is CRAZYBEEF4SX1280. It should match the target in the top left.
Load Firmware (Online) and then Flash Firmware. You might have to save and reboot or unplug and plug back in.
**This is a huge part where I got stuck (I don't remember if it was before or after firmware). The radio and quad weren't binding. Finally, on the BF Welcome tab there are links to drivers. Download the ImpulseRC Driver Fixer. It is a tool which automatically fixes the incorrectly assigned driver for STM32 BOOTLOADER (FC in firmware update mode)
Move your quad around and make sure the model on the screen matches with what you're doing, and that the arrow points to the front of the quad.
Go to the Receiver tab and make sure your radio is bound with your quad. Move the sticks and make sure they correlate with throttle, yaw etc.
Betaflight Setup - go back to the Radiomaster section to the Captain Drone video. Start after he binds at 8:30. (You will use "bind_rx" in cli tab) It walks you through setting up arm switch and flight modes, etc.
Presets - this is especially useful because you can use someone else's information to get you started. I used the UAVTech Whoop preset, I believe it sets the master multiplier at 1.6x, and it works for me.
Bluejay Firmware - Everyone should have this. It enables bidirectional dshot and rpm filtering and makes the quad run way better with longer flight times. It's an online configurator that flashes the flight controller built into the Mobula
This OscarLiang post describes how to flash your Mobula perfectly. The only changes I made were: both common parameter sliders I moved ALL the way up. I saw 2-3 YouTube videos and posts where they upped the startup power min and max to the most allowed and it runs perfectly. (When you are on the "select target" page, the default leaves it at BLHeli_S, you have to choose the drop down of "Bluejay")
I chose the latest version firmware, and 96khz pwm frequency is recommended for tinywhoops and that it what I used. Definitely play with the startup melody, they have super mario and star wars tones that your quad will make every time you power up. Every time I plug in a new battery I get the super mario bros theme song.
Go back to BF, on the Configuration tab, my gyro update was 8khz and pid loop frequency was 8khz. After I setup the OSD, my controller was running at about 75%+ (you can see the cpu load in bf) which is about the cutoff for being too high, according to my research. Setting it at 8khz gyro and 4khz pid loop was the smoothest running for me.
**Please setup your BUZZER - I did, and the captain drone video he walks you through setting it as a switch. This saved my drone countless times already. Once you crash into a bush and take your goggles off, you completely forget where you were flying. The buzzer helps track it down more than you would expect. Flip over turtle mode is a lifesaver also, that is mandatory.
On the Motors tab, turn on Bidirectional DShot, make sure dshot300 is selected. The mobula7 has 12 motor poles. You can test each motor individually to make sure they are spinning the right direction.
**At this point, I could see the video in my goggles, and I could power up and arm the quad, but it kept jumping, twitching, and cutting power every time I gave it throttle. After lots of things, I checked each motor. Run each one individually and feel if air is blowing above or below, if it's not below, then it's the wrong direction. The solution to this was the checkbox under quad x "motor direction is reversed". I turned that on, and it worked perfectly.
I moved throttle expo to .30 and I like it quite a bit, everything else I left the same.
Closing - I'm sure I forgot/confused a few crucial steps, I'm going to be updating and fact checking these steps to hopefully help someone who was stuck like me. I hope I described each problem I had well enough so that if it happens to someone else, they can figure it out.
Since starting to write this two days ago, I've ordered a couple more things:
TrueRC Singularity 20mm locking u.fl antenna (best antenna, fits under canopy)
Extra set of HM RS0802 20k motors. Mine are champs but if one breaks I want to swap it.
TBS Trimph Antenna RP-SMA male ($20) - Huge upgrade to omni antenna on EV800D, if I find a cheap patch cable that would be cool but I'm saving for digital
Extra Runcam Nano 3 Camera (I want to try the TW Pinch)
2x Mob7 v4 frames - mine has pretty bad road rash (tinywhoop.com has cool colors)
New canopy with camera mount (the first few times you take it apart, the tiny foam piece is a pain to keep under the camera
Have fun flying!!

For five days, Northwestern University's Deering Meadow rang with the shouts of student protesters and supporters joining demonstrations against the Israel-Hamas war on college campuses nationwide.
But Tuesday morning the grassy meadow on Northwestern's suburban Chicago campus was silent after student organizers and the school announced an agreement late Monday to curb protest activity — in return for a new advisory committee on university investments and other commitments.

2024.04.30 14:01 Upbeat-Serve-6096 Second hand RG353P hardware and firmware experience (V1 screen, might be more edge case than that, elaboration below)

Second hand RG353P hardware and firmware experience (V1 screen, might be more edge case than that, elaboration below)
Currently I also have a Miyoo Mini Plus and an RG35XX Plus. Went for an Android-enabled model to see what kind of experience I could get out of it.
Hardware wise it is fully specced out with dual speakers, dual sticks, dual shoulder triggers, and HDMI-out, USB host port and Bluetooth. Peripherals galore, and it only lacks gyro to be a true Android tablet like their RG405 line (which I haven't tried yet).
Hand feel is really good. I am used to and not cramped by the form factor of the RG35XX, but its buttons are firm and the right amount of springy. However its D-pad has more false diagonals than I hoped, which the RG35XX Plus avoided near perfectly. Play a lot of Apotris on both and you'll likely find out.
The first thing I tried on Android, sacrilegiously, is Dolphin MMJR emulator. While there's NO way it can run any GameCube/Wii titles, WiiWare 2D games like Konami's Gradius Rebirth run surprisingly okay.
Stock firmware experience
Unlike the 35XXP's stock firmware, this one is actually quite polished, which is no doubt because it is based on Batocera v31 (released 2021) and has a few snazzy features that I really like over ANY custom firmware I've seen, such as:
  • F key being both a menu key and a hotkey enabler. I wonder how easy it is to recreate this in other RetroArch releases.
  • F + POWER on boot to launch Android. Currently every other firmware needs the SD card slot 1 empty to do so. I don't like having to spring the SD card out over and over again.
  • Acting as XBOX-styled USB gamepad function. When I questioned this function when trying out the RG350, everyone had skepticism. And BAM, whoever Anbernic subcontracted their software duties to did a bang up job with this function, making it quite a capable PC companion handheld if you know what I mean. I wish I could transplant the executable and drivers into other firmware.
There are some downsides.
  • It's not a single-card solution. it doesn't let you use the GAME partition.
  • The April 2023 update still used the old Batocera as the base, no doubt making it lack some new snazzy features like the Supafaust emulator and TIC-80 support. Official support was at v35 and v36 at that point.
  • Shader menu doesn't give you any "sharp-bilinear" or "quillez" option, which in my opinion are the best basic GPU shaders for any retro game. They look sharp, but not shimmery, and this install not including it - and buring me with other "filters" that really are overlays - soured my expectation.
  • Bugs exist. Sometimes not exiting RetroArch properly hangs the system.
This leads me to look into alternate firmware solutions, but it's, to me, an extremely difficult path that's full of pitfalls.
Sure, known good solutions, in theory, exist, like ArkOS, JelOS/Rocknix, and surprisingly official Batocera and RecalBox. But, for whatever reason, this particular unit of mine just doesn't play well with MOST of them. Mostly with the display panel. I tried. Discord folks gave me a few pointers. None of them landed. The only reason I may decipher myself is that, while there are 2 board/display revisions, mine just might be yet another tiny revision. So I'll give my few points to consider. If you want good experience out of any of these firmware solutions, try buying new at a discount.
  1. JelOS 20240313 - Working well within the confines so far. Sad that official support is gone, but I might try building the latest revision from source if I have the skills to do so. Some quirks like the Batocera-like hotkey overrides take getting used to, but this is the one I'll likely consistently use to play games. For some reason, PortMaster is broken, at least the interface. No Kodi, which means I can't use it as my HD media box. No quick shutdown either. Has in-menu save manager, but no "recently played" list.
  2. ArkOS 20240117- Support for my display panel is broken. The install provides two DTB files which alter how the linux OS drives my display panel. One has bad ghosting, apparently common among early adopters of ArkOS on any RG353 unit. The other has bad refresh rates and color. Also I'm skeptical for its later release being OTA only. Offline only devices will suffer badly. I like its quick shutdown feature. Has "recently played" list, but no in-menu save manager.
  3. Rocknix 20240411 - Won't boot. Apparently it's a known problem. dualboot models with eMMC flashed with Android images just won't boot to Rocknix. We have to wait and see.
  4. Official Batocera v39 - Right thumbstick won't be recognized. I have no idea how to deal with this, because the DTB files are completely restructured (if the smaller by half filesize is any indication)
  5. RecalBox - Same broken display support. I don't like its virtual keyboard, but I do like its ES themes. Might migrate it to my other ES-based firmwares. No portmaster, and likely no Tic-80.

2024.04.30 12:36 rgocal Drosera Launcher (Developer Preview)

Drosera Launcher (Developer Preview)
Greetings! A few weeks back, I had published a thread showing off a launcher project that I have been working on, using the Logitech Gcloud as my main driver for development and I think we're at a certain milestone. If your eager to get your hands on Project Drosera and check out what I've been working on, than that time has come.
Notice : This is a developer preview of which means that it is no where near its final product form and what you are exposed to is subject to change. I also expect that you have the knowledge to switch to and from different launcher apps and have some knowledge of the android OS. (Tip: You can download my Launcher Ops app from Google play to help switch different launcher apps easier). This launcher shouldn't be used as a daily driver yet, just as a demo. Drosera Launcher is expected to launch on Google Play or equavalent, once it's finished and will have paid features tied to it. During the developer preview, their will not be anything put behind paywalls. You are free to use it as you wish but you should not distribute it.
~Introduction~
This is project Drosera, A unique android homescreen that has been in development for a few months now. It has been built from scratch and designed for a specific line of devices that excludes mobile phones (I mean maybe like "Ultra" variants with wide screens) but this launcher is not intended for the touch screen environments. We are supporting Tablets, Handhelds, Desktop environments (specifically Bliss OS) and eventually Android TV devices. The goal of this launcher was to Develop a homescreen that brought users a homescreen experience that felt like a console experience. Now, Im aware there are a few on the playstore as we speak and maybe a few on github unreleased but this launcher aims towards a different crowd. When you use Drosera, The launcher's goal is to present the user with a daily routine as like a console would. Present the user with it's most used games or apps and just make the route easier for them while presenting a rather attractive user experience. A gamepad is required to navigate this launcher (PS4/5, Xbox, Steam Controller, Stadia, etc). This launcher is also being designed to suggest cloud/stream gaming apps in its suggestion panel.
I am using the Logitech Gcloud as the main daily driver for development. Altho the Gcloud has some android features under lockdown, it still serves as a rightful driver for development.
(The Gcloud/Abxylute currently don't offer a way to view recent apps or manage running processes without the system launcher. I am currently working on some backdoor todo so using accessibility. A suggestion is to access the developer menu and set running processes to none or 1)
Drosera Launcher is built with a mixture of Android Leanback, Material Design and some custom implementations to make this work the way I wanted it too. (For the Gcloud, that means using the screen mirroring feature does not effect the launcher. Drosera will adapt to any screen size or should atleast...)
The Homescreen is comprised of 2 sections. Your default App Store and your recent apps and when navigating downward, your presented with quick actions and suggested apps for cloud gaming and communication. Surrounding the homescreen is an interactive display that shows you button input, hardware status updates, homescreen indicators and access to Launcher sheet menus. Everything you see is subject to change and still heavily in development as a side note.
What has been achieved so far...
-Interactive Hardware Indicators that tell you the connection status of wifi and bluetooth (certain permissions where needed to access this information)
-A Digital Clock indicator that can be binded to a user app of choice for Clock app shortcuts when expanded (with its own Calendar info when expanded)
-A notification Indicator that shows you high priority notifications (with notification management options in development)
-Battery icon that shows hardware information and charging information
-Displays the devices android user account name in top right (this will be expanded on in due time. The GCloud and Abxylute does not support this and will have an alternative feature)
-Interactive Button displays that update based on the item in focus (Some issues suggest they don't always update properly)
-The ability to set a default app store that is installed on your device (Playstore, Amazon app store, Galaxy store, etc)
-Recent Apps panel that shows useage info over time and some other interesting features in development. (This may be replaced or have an alternative in the near future)
-Adaptive Leanback cards that take in adaptive icons to form their shape.
-Icon Pack Support with Card Icon options in development
-A custom Preference screen built from the ground up to support Dpad navigation (Checkmark preferences may require you to double check them before they actually apply the settings)
-OTA Updates (for the developer preview)
-Horizontal Scroll App Drawer with custom category options in development
-Screen size optimized Leanback cards that are designed to match your screen display pixels.
-Notifications sheet that displays all of your current notifications (Buggy, might be revamped)
-A Guide sheet (in development, more info to come)
-A settings navigation sheet (shortcuts will be binded to keyboards)
-Mouse and Keyboard support in the works
-Ambient sounds and UI Sounds (toggleable)
Current issues I am aware of...
-The homescreen does not transition well back and forth from the App Drawer. Sometimes hitting a Home button fixes this.
-Some transition animations may be sluggish or time incorrectly
-Not all Handhelds have the same buttons so we will be working on a key binding window eventually
-Not all Icon Packs behave well, we recommend any that are adaptive
-Button Legends sometimes overlap
-Theme colors may not be correct in some spots (We are working on a theme engine)
-Notification Page may have notificaton data mixed up with notifications
-Some menu items are placeholders or empty altogether
~Conclusion~
Il update this thread as new development takes place and new milestones are reached. I wont be announcing every update as I release but I will talk about milestone releases.
All I want from the testers, in this round of testing, is feedback. How do you feel about the launcheexperience? What are your first impressions and what would you change if something didn't feel appealing to you. Unless it's breaking your chance to test the launcher, im not interested in bug reports right now as everything is experimental. If the launcher just fails and does something completely wacko, im not really interested to hear about it just yet.
~Getting Connected~
I have 2 communities you are welcomed to join as I dont keep an eye on the forums much
Im looking forward to some of your feedback on the project and ill see you all around! Thanyou for taking interest in Project Drosera. I understand that the GCloud doesn't have much going for it right now as far as custom work and development goes, so this is rather exciting to see for me and probably yourself.

2024.04.30 00:22 _Revelator_ Clarkson's Columns: My harvest hymn & An interview with Clarkson and Caleb

My harvest hymn — with added Chinese chemicals
By Jeremy Clarkson (The Sunday Times, April 28)
Many of us will remember that Mungo Jerry song featuring the line, “Have a drink, have a drive. Go out and see what you can find.” And of course we all realise you can’t even think that any more. And nor, really, is it considered acceptable to follow up with: “If her daddy’s rich, take her out for a meal. If her daddy’s poor, just do what you feel.” Times have moved on.
Of course lots of lyrics now feel as if they’re from another aeon. "Clair" by Gilbert O’Sullivan especially. But you might think it’s impossible for the lyrics in a harvest festival hymn to become out of date. “We plough the fields and scatter. The good seed on the land. But it is fed and watered by God’s almighty hand.” Absolute timelessness. It was true ten thousand years ago and it’s true now.
No, it isn’t. God doesn’t water the land any more. The coal-fired Chinese power stations do that. And he doesn’t feed it either. That’s handled by CF Industries, which makes all the chemical fertiliser that farmers use on their fields.
We don’t even scatter seeds any more, because that’s wasteful onanism. We drill them into the ground, at precise intervals and at a precise depth using a computer-controlled, £40,000 seed drill. That’s towed behind a £250,000 Case tractor, which was built in the factory where they used to make Tiger tanks. Not much Goddishness going on in any of that.
There isn’t even any ploughing any more. In the olden days farmers would turn the top layer of soil over using a plough so that the weeds were buried. And because they were deprived of sunlight they died. It was a lovely, natural, rosy-cheeked way of creating the perfect seedbed for the following year’s crop.
But then along came Little Miss Thunberg and her merry band of Packhamites, who decided that 1,500 billion tonnes of carbon is stored in the planet’s soil. And that if you turn this soil over with a plough, all of it will be released into the upper atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide. Which is bad. So the lovely, natural method of killing weeds had to stop. And instead farmers had to use chemical sorcery from Monsanto, BASF and the Zhejiang Xinan Chemical Industrial Group.
Farmers didn’t mind, if I’m honest, because ploughing is extremely expensive. You simply would not believe how much diesel is needed to drag a two-tonne land anchor through a muddy field. Using weedkiller instead is much cheaper.
Or rather it was. But weedkiller prices have gone up dramatically in recent years. And from where I’m sitting it doesn’t really seem to work any more. Every year Kaleb goes into the fields like a rural Terminator, hosing down the weeds with his ungodly chemical sorcery and then, a few weeks later, Cheerful Charlie walks me through the same fields, pointing out the brome and the black-grass, which is easy to spot because it’s purple and green and completely immune to anything the world’s chemists can throw at it.
So this year Charlie said we should become medieval and plough the fields instead. Selfish? Well, yes, this will shoot a tonne of CO2 into the troposphere and that’s obviously bad. And I’ll use four times more diesel than I would if I used weedkiller. So that’s not good for the environment either. But here’s the kicker: I wouldn’t be pumping any chemicals into the soil.
So that’s the choice — soil or sky? You have to hurt one of them if you want to eat. I went for the sky and rented a plough.
I settled on an eight-furrow monster for two good reasons. Number one: the bigger the plough, the faster you get the job done. And number two: none of Kaleb’s tractors would be powerful enough to pull it, so we’d have to use my 270bhp Lamborghini. Which would annoy him. Even admitting that it’s better than his tractors gives him a hot flush. Sometimes he vibrates with fury when he goes near it.
The only drawback to this cleverly wrought large plough plan was that, because Kaleb refuses to drive my tractor, I’d have to do the ploughing.
This is something I’ve done before. It was on Top Gear about 200 years ago and I did very well. Partly this was because my competitors in the ploughing competition were James May and Richard Hammond. And partly because one of the two judges was a really good friend of my mum.
In real life, though, things were different. I couldn’t hitch the plough to the tractor without help. I couldn’t do a three-point turn when it was attached. And I couldn’t make the tractor move when the furrows were in the sodden soil. All four wheels just sort of spun. So I had to lift the plough slightly, which meant I wasn’t ploughing. Or wiggle the steering wheel, which made big holes and, when it worked, caused me to set off in a new direction. It began to look as if a drunk, blind man with no arms was doing the ploughing.
All the time I was watching the fuel gauge plummet like the depth gauge in a holed submarine, and wondering if it might be cheaper, easier and kinder to the environment to use chemical weedkiller instead.
This is farming. Only last week I discovered that approximately 18 billion slugs have come to live in the fields where I’ve planted spring barley. If I adopt a live-and-let-live rewilding attitude and do nothing they will eat the lot and, next year, there will be no Hawkstone lager. As that makes no sense, I therefore have to pepper the field with slug pellets, which will kill them. Great. But these pellets will also kill all the worms. So what’s the answer? There isn’t one.
Similarly, I have signed up to the government’s eco-friendly grant scheme and will be planting things that aren’t food in three fields. They’re good for the soil and they’re good for my bank balance. But it means I’m not growing stuff people can eat. I know one chap who has taken 60 per cent of his farm out of food production and he’s not alone. So yippee. All that stored carbon and all of that fixed-in nitrogen.
But what if you want some bread? You’ll have to get a loaf made from wheat that was grown abroad. And how’s that good for global warming? And will it have been grown under the same stringent rules that we have here? Or will it have been fertilised with human faeces? You face a choice then. Do you want net zero in the UK? Or do you want to eat a Mexican’s turd?
Do you want lager or worms? Do you want healthy soil or a healthy sky? Do you want bees or orangutans? These are the questions I’m facing every single day. It’s a multiple-choice world of no right answers.
Which brings us back to another harvest festival hymn.
All things bright and beautiful. All birds that must be plucked. No matter what we choose to do, we’re well and truly.

Kaleb Cooper: ‘I’ve taught someone triple my age to do a better job’
The Diddly Squat farmers Jeremy Clarkson and Kaleb Cooper are back for a third series. We put our wellies on to meet the odd couple of the Cotswolds
By Ben Dowell (The Times, April 29)
During filming for the forthcoming third series of Clarkson’s Farm, Kaleb Cooper drove into work and saw Jeremy Clarkson vacuuming a blackberry bush. While the spectacle was “something I am never going to forget”, the sandy-haired, cherub-faced youngster was so unimpressed that he didn’t even get out of his car to ask what was happening.
These two have grown into one of television’s best double acts. For the show’s executive producer, Peter Fincham, there is an “element of Jeeves and Wooster” about them, a delicious odd couple relationship that is all the more gratifying because the team didn’t need to cast Cooper. He was already working on Diddly Squat Farm when the show started.
Cooper is a farmer to the tips of his muddy wellies and has taught Clarkson most of the practical business of farming his 1,000-acre establishment near Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire, as well as how hard the job is and the risks farmers take for little financial reward. Cooper may have just completed a sell-out national stage tour building on his popularity and more than two million Instagram followers. He may have been invited to No 10 to meet Rishi Sunak (more on that later), but everyone on the show — the producers, one of Cooper’s “Chippy” friends I spoke to and Clarkson himself — are clear: the 25-year-old hasn’t changed one iota since the show started airing in 2021.
“I think it’s very easy to be grounded if you don’t leave Chipping Norton,” Clarkson says. His girlfriend, Lisa Hogan, who has become another star of the show, agrees. “How Kaleb comes across is exactly how he is. He is very thoughtful and kind and very bright. His use of language is also very easy on the ear. We could have had a monosyllabic tractor driver and that wouldn’t have worked but we were lucky we had Kaleb.”
He has written two books as well: The World According to Kaleb and Britain According to Kaleb, with a third (Life According to Kaleb) on the way. These ruminations are often spoken into a Dictaphone (supplied by his publishers) during the 18 hours he spends each day alone in his happy place, his tractor cab. The books now sit on the shelves that a ten-year-old Cooper and his carpenter father put up in the local bookshop. Though, of course, one of the running jokes in the show is that he has only read one other book in his life apart from his own, and that was one of Clarkson’s.
There is another moment in the new series when Clarkson and Cooper (who are in competition with each other across the eight episodes) are working a field when they spy someone in the distance on another tractor drilling “his” field. He is Andy Cato of the electronic pop duo Groove Armada, and Cooper seems totally nonplussed, not least because he doesn’t know who or what Groove Armada is. The same probably goes for many of his near-neighbours, who include Joe Wicks, Simon Cowell, Natalie Imbruglia, David Beckham and Amanda Holden. When Cooper bumped into David Cameron (now Lord Cameron of Chipping Norton) in a local eaterie, he wasn’t quite sure who he was either. Strangely Cooper is now as famous as at least a few of these people. His appeal extends across the globe — Andy Wilman, Clarkson’s old Top Gear producer who edits the show, tells me that he rarely hears an English accent in the farm shop as tourists flock to see their agricultural idols.
Since Clarkson’s Farm aired, Cooper told his theatre audiences, he has been offered snazzy haircuts from top-level salons, perhaps to stop the constant mickey-taking from Clarkson. But he still goes to the same local hairdresser.
Brilliant moments are not always captured by the cameras and while the team may wake up with plans, farmers and the show’s fans will know that the weather often has other ideas. “Cheerful” Charlie Ireland, the farm’s land agent and adviser, does pop by a couple of times a day, as he does in the series, often to pour cold water on Clarkson’s latest schemes. But many of these moments are not filmed. Is that annoying?
“Sometimes you think, ‘Oh, that would be really good, that’d be funny on TV,’ but actually [the cameras] are not there,” Cooper says. “But you don’t say these things, to make it up for the TV. I may have taken drama in school, but I got a U in it, so actually I’m not an actor.”
Clarkson agrees: “It is [effortless] because I don’t have to pretend to be someone else. With The Grand Tour, Richard Hammond isn’t as stupid as he’s made out. I’m not as bombastic as is made out and James May isn’t quite as boring as he’s made out. And so you’re playing a caricature, you’re playing a role, you’re there to provoke and be stupid. Here, we haven’t got any of that. So we’re just ourselves. You get up and you just have to be yourself, which is incredibly relaxing. And in that regard it is effortless. Farming is not effortless. Make no mistake, the television side of it is a piece of cake because I don’t have to think, ‘Oh I’d better say something idiotic now.’”
“You do that anyway,” Cooper says.
The two bicker in exactly the same way off camera as they do on. At the press conference for the new series they quarrelled with good humour about their dogs. Cooper says Clarkson’s pair of fox-red labradors (named Sansa and Arya after Game of Thrones characters) are “posh man’s dogs” who “never do a thing he says”. Clarkson maintains that Cooper just locks his dog in his tractor cab. They also bicker about the goats Clarkson keeps. Clarkson likes their eyes and thinks they do a good job mowing his grass. Cooper thinks he should breed and slaughter them in the conventional way and sell goat meat in the farm shop.
There is a similar clash of approaches over the pigs. Cooper doesn’t get as emotional as Clarkson and Hogan when things go wrong (and they do go wrong with the pigs this series). When Clarkson holds aloft a newborn piglet, Cooper calls him a “proud parent”, which feels part mickey-take, part genuinely warm compliment — a common theme in their complex relationship.
Clarkson is learning to be more steely and is, Cooper says, actually now a “good pig farmer”. Is the younger man pleased that Clarkson has come on? Or is there a bit of him who would still enjoy showing him the ropes?
“I think there’s a bit of a proudness of teaching someone maybe triple my age … to go out and do a better job … Hopefully I’ve taught him a lot about it. But he’s taught me so much equally about the television industry.” In fact, Cooper says, he has learnt so much that he cannot watch TV now because he knows how it all works behind the scenes.
He is a voice for farmers, showing us how hard the job of people who put food on our table is, and demanding that we respect it. Cooper has arranged two bursaries of £3,000 plus a work placement for young farmers and is keen that more enter a profession where the average age is 59. When he met Sunak last May he was more interested in the PM’s hair than anything, principally because he didn’t expect much from him.
“Let’s put it this way. If someone invited me tomorrow to go to a farm … if I go to that farm and that farmer says to me, ‘Kaleb, you know what, this week I’m gonna plough that field,’ I know for a damn fact that that farmer is going to go out there and plough that field because he said he’s going do it. If the prime minister or anyone from politics goes to me, ‘Kaleb, I’m going to do this next week,’ they’re not going to do it, are they?”
While he doesn’t have much faith in our legislators making life easier for hard-pressed farmers or for supermarkets to pay them more, he must be pleased that people, especially city folk, now know about farming thanks to him, I say.
“Yeah, everyone knows what a tramline is now, right? And let’s face it, I always say this: it doesn’t matter what phone you’ve got, what car you’ve got, what house you’re living in, what matters the very most is what’s coming across your plate for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And therefore that is the most important thing to me.”
Cooper is open to offers of shows such as I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! but thinks he probably won’t have the time with all the work he has to do. Clarkson called him “easily the most entrepreneurial person I have ever met” and he is laser-focused on his ultimate goal of having a farm one day, which will have to be local, despite the “extortionate” price of land in the area.
“I want to farm here,” he says. “I don’t want to move away from my family and everything I know. This is where I was brought up and this is where I’m going to stay.”
But the show will be with us for a while. It is hugely popular — series four is being filmed and while viewing figures aren’t available, it is believed to be Prime’s most popular programme in the UK by, well, a country mile.
Cooper is engaged to his partner, Taya (mother to their three-year-old son and ten-month-old daughter), but doesn’t know when he will have time to walk down the aisle. He knows he will “have a great party”, and isn’t yet sure if Clarkson will be his best man. But one thing’s for sure, Clarkson has already found his.
The new series of Clarkson’s Farm is on Prime Video from May 3.

No Sun column this week, but the Guardian (!) has published a long interview with Clarkson: "'Dismissing global warming? That was a joke': Jeremy Clarkson on fury, farming and why he’s a changed man". Let me know if you have problems viewing it.
Clarkson's columns are regularly collected as books. You can buy them from his boss or your local bookshop.

2024.04.29 01:20 DM19_HXTSHXT "See now over this..." MHO #1: Hats Off to the Bull

Always loved the album cover; Its so powerful and feels like a rush.
Flashback, 2011. Coming off what I'd say was a great album in Sci-Fi Crimes just 2 years earlier, CheVelle would release Hats Off to the Bull. A lot had changed since the decade had turned anew, and with this album we would get a new feel of what the future sound would be for the band. That said, Here's My Honest Opinion on Hats Off to the Bull:
The Core 11:
01. Face to the Floor: HOTTB's lead track (and one of its three singles) to me is pretty special. While I'm partial to the fact that it was chosen as a single, and you'll see why soon, it holds a place with me because it was one of the first CheVelle songs I'd ever heard. (Team Hot Wheels Firestorm had it as its theme lol) The first few seconds of the song set the tone for the whole album going forth, with its strong riff and ensuing melody. I also love the hook of the song, which shouldn't be a surprise as CheVelle's always done great hooks and breakdowns. Overall I'd say its pretty great as a lead, but I also think something like The Meddler or Ruse could've also been chosen to represent the album as a single over this....
02. Same Old Trip: Well maybe not over FTTF, but definitely over Same Old Trip. I don't flat out dislike this song but it really didn't stand out to me. After analyzing the song again, I can see the intentions of its lyrics, Pete's great at writing, but the rest of the song kinda gets lost with me. I think SOT just gets overshadowed by others on this album.
03. Ruse: Ruse on the other hand, does SOT but better. Its one of my favorites on the album because not only does it give the message of betrayal, but I can hear it more throughout the whole song. It's also such a good song on its own. It totally captures my feel of the album, from sound to visual. Whenever I look at the bull, charging past on the cover, I instantly think of this song and....
04. The Meddler: When it comes to favorites, this one might take the cake. If I ranked every CheVelle song individually, this'd more than likely crack the top 20. I don't think there's anything I dislike about this song. The lead-in from Ruse, the heavy riffs and drum-work, the buildup that elevates the song, just everything in general is nice. I'd definitely give this the spotlight of the album. I think the way I perceive this song might be a little different from others, but it kind feels relatable. Overall, just a very good song.
05. PiĂąata: This song is also really good, it has a pretty fast tempo to start that balances really well as the song goes on. It sorta reminds me of Korn's "Good God" or SOAD's "Chop Suey" but that's just me, idk why tbh. One thing I think this song does well is just being a break in the mood from the first couple songs, keeping pace while also switching up the tone. I'd say this might be the underdog of the album
06. Envy: The way this starts is so calming, and I wish the melody of the beginning was used a little more. Really I think this song, if none of the previous songs had done so already, provided one more look to the future and another band of separation from albums of the past. IMO, the only song i'd compare this to—set up wise—would be Panic Prone from This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In). No doubt the best part of this song is the lead up to the end.
07. Hats Off to the Bull: This is the self-titled (does self-titled work here?) eponymous (apparently that's the word for it) track of the album, and for good reason. Not only is this a great song, its message is very representative of the band and the album itself. From what I read online, Pete really dislikes bullfighting, and that's where this song and the name of the album comes from. That and the theme of rooting for the underdog; For the bull's David as opposed to a matador's Goliath.
08. Arise: To me, this song is HOTTB's rendition of To Return (TTOT (CDUI). It gives the feeling of looking beyond and holding hope. Not being held down by what is or who are. This song is imagination, determination, and the will to keep going. In fact, I could see this being played at the end of a movie with a feel good ending, heck maybe even the end of an album.
09. Revenge: This is another song that rides a strong riff, and really it feels like a continuation of The Meddler in a way. I can definitely see why so many people like this. It's a top 5 track on HOTTB in my opinion and I love the refrain.
10. Prima Donna: I'd say this is one of the weaker songs on the album. That doesn't mean its bad, I do like it, but I just don't feel like it fits as perfect as the others do. Maybe on an older album? It certainly stands out, being a softer song with a continuous pace and little stoppage til the end.
11. Clones: This is the final song on the main album (There's 3 different bonus tracks). There's a common theme with many CheVelle albums that the last song will be one of the best, and without a doubt this one follows suit. Clones is such a good song that gives us—well me because this is 100% my opinion and I don't speak for others—one last look at the album as a whole. Great writing, great sound, strong message, and a good impression to leave on. This was another track that could've easily held its weigh as a single.
Bonus Tracks:
I'm going to keep my thoughts on all three of these in one spot. First off: Indifference. I love this track, but—like Prima Donna—I really think it'd fit better on an older album. Maybe TTOT? Yea most likely. The next two are Glimpse of the Con and the live version of Still Running. GOTC feels like a HOTTB song a little more than Indifference does. Its not bad either and does its job as a bonus. Lastly, Still Running (Live at the Metro) is great. I loved the original and I love this one, but I favor the studio version more than the live version.
Album Awards: (mine, not like, literal awards =P)
Spotlight of the Album (SOTA): The Meddler (This award goes to the song(s) that I think is the best on the album)
Underdog of the Album (UdOTA): Piñata/Ruse (This award—which was tied—is given to the song(s) that I feel are some of the most underrated)
One Song Award (OSA): Hats Off to the Bull (This award belongs to the one song that I believe best represents the album as a whole. If you listen to only one, let it be this one)
Road Trip Award (RTA): Arise/Clones (The RTA; again, a tie, is awarded to the track(s) that I think would be the best for a long stretch of a road trip)
Closer of the Album (COTA): Clones (In my opinion, the last song(s) on the album that you should listen to for the perfect ending to your jam sesh gets this award)
The Wrap Up:
Overall, I'd rate this album an 7.5 to 8 out of 10, For its time and its place in CheVelle's discography, its not bad. It might've had the lowest general peak of all the albums, save for Point #1, but that doesn't mean its bad. It's a nice listen and has some really underrated heavy hitters on the track list. Even the bonus songs are good. Hats Off to the Bull really ushered in a new era while giving us plenty of messages to pull forward. TL;DR: It's a very solid album.
Now you know My Honest Opinions of HOTTB. With all this said, what are yall's? Thanks again for reading, even if it was only the TL;DR!
