2024.05.19 22:27 para_blox Can’t bring myself to listen!

Friends, I have the opposite problem from everyone. No true issues generating. I have had annoying songs rushing my brain constantly for well over three decades. Back in the day, a coworker and I even used to sing about our job duties. “Filing and smiling!” Whatever.
I also have enough knowledge of piano, notation, theory and orchestration to get my dumb ideas down.
Moreover, I’m a strict hobbyist with no desire for fame over my creations. It’s as though I had an ugly baby. Mine and nobody needs to love it, up to me if I want to raise it right not to damage society, but unlikely to have any impact. (Maybe kill that darling with the analogy.)
The problem is: I don’t have the patience to get into existing popular or unpopular music. I just don’t enjoy listening. I used to love to play along to early Beatles, Queen, Beethoven, Monty Python—you know, the fun stuff 90s boomer parents played on family road trips. Guess where I learned it, and that’s what I knew.
Once home, I’d sit down and bang out a hopping piano part like Maxwell’s Silver Hammer, or stumble through the left-hand tremolo of the “Pathetic” Sonata—but if I ain’t doing, concentration ain’t happening.
Music can be so fun, but my horizons are cramped by the fact that I can’t get into novel things. I’m old now and don’t know where to begin, nor how best to waste my remaining time and life. I don’t even have Spotify. Maybe that’s the fundamental problem.
However, another problem is that there’s just so much trash out there. I’m personally a terrible producer. But I see it as deadly for theory, melody and harmony that anyone with access to a decent DAW can polish the sound of music that’s fundamentally boring. Or paste together a collage of prefab sounds and call it original. Worse: AI.
The other day I was introduced to the groundbreaking electronic noise of John Chowney (b. 1934, and the sort of character who gets that kind of wiki-esque footnote). Google him if you’re unfamiliar, and don’t have tinnitus at the ready. It occurred to me that you can only write music like his if you’re literally inventing and building the instruments themselves from scratch. Yet Stanford University profited insanely from the synthesizer of his sound. Their endowment will surely outlast humanity.
So I’m generating this vacuum of ridiculous, poorly performed, underproduced music, leveraging basically-basic orchestral noises, leaning into inspiration from happy poppy sounds from 30-200+ years ago. No interest in auto tune, plenty in reverb, no way to begin to consume new sounds.
So I mentioned the Beatles and Monty Python. Who is currently doing this? Bo Burnham is brilliant, comes to mind. Where do I find some fun wall-o-sound with rich harmonies? Clever words? I have auditory processing issues and can’t make out lyrics in performance, but I do appreciate a good read. Can’t promise to sit still for it, but maybe I can play along.
What can you recommend…that isn’t an engine?
Thank you for attending to this frustration. I hope I can get in to something without YouTube’s algorithmic encouragement.

2024.05.19 22:19 malcolio DRAFT 2 - NTW in Alphabetical Order. Chapter 1: Alsace-Lorraine

DRAFT 2 - NTW in Alphabetical Order. Chapter 1: Alsace-Lorraine
Europe in Early January, 1805. How the continent looks at the start of a Napoleon: Total War game.
(Thumbnail) Seven years ago I started posting a writeup of playing a game of Empire: Total War with the challenge of conquering every region in alphabetical order. This was inspired by someone trying to play Crusader Kings in alphabetical order back in 2006. After 75 chapters, with about 2,600 images and just a silly amount of text, I completed the game and swore off touching another Total War game for some time!
I’m now back, to try and achieve the same goal of conquering every region in alphabetical order but in Napoleon: Total War. I’ve never finished a game of N:TW before, so it will fun to see what this more focused and refined(?) version of E:TW will be like to play. As with my last playthrough, I’m using DarthMod and playing on Normal/Normal difficulty. I have no idea if those settings will make this challenge too easy or impossible, let’s find out!
Napoleon Bonaparte’s stats and the 11 regions I have to sell off before I can start this challenge.
There is a vast quantity of books studying the life of Napoleon Bonaparte, but what none of them will tell you is that he had a passion for the alphabet just like King Louis XIV. So obviously he was forced to sell off every region of the French Empire so that he could conquer the entirety of Europe in alphabetical order.
Unfortunately if I lose France I automatically lose the entire game, so I’ll need to unofficially keep hold of that, but otherwise I first need to trade away Alsace-Lorraine, Aquitaine, Bretagne, Corsica, Hannover, Normandie, Pays d'Oc, Picardie-Champagne, Piedmont-Liguria, Provence, and the Southern Netherlands. At the moment the French Empire’s prosperity is spectacular, its prestige sublime, but that’s going to take a bit of a hit…
The French military units in those region capitals will soon need to vacate, most are just militia and basic cavalry, but Strasbourg has a decent sized force led by Napoleon’s brother-in-law Joachim Murat.
The French Imperial Army, scattered across Alsace-Lorraine, Northern Italy, and Hannover
The rest of the Imperial Army is along the empire’s eastern border. Napoleon himself commands the largest army to the west of Strasbourg, close to two smaller forces led by Marshals Michel Ney and Louis-Nicolas Davout. Over in Northern Italy a detachment led by Marshal Jean-André Masséna guards the border with Austria, and in isolated Hannover a similar-sized group guards the city with Marshal Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte as its commander.
The two French fleets, one off Portugal and the other near Genoa, and the flagship Scipion.
The French Navy has just two fleets. The Atlantic Squadron is currently stationed near Portugal, Admiral Pierre-Charles Villeneuve commands the immense 122-gun Scipion, two 3rd rates, two 4th rates, and frigate. The Mediterranean Squadron is near French-controlled Genoa, led by Vice-Admiral Victor Durand it consists of just two frigates and a corvette.
Soon the French Empire won’t have any ports that need defending or to repair ships at, and my income is about to nosedive, so I think it’s time to do something reckless…
An outnumbered French fleet is defeated by Britain’s finest, but not without scoring a massive blow against the Royal Navy.
Admiral Villeneuve is told to take his fleet north and engage whatever enemy vessels he can find, to sink as many ships as possible even if it risks wiping out his own. It doesn’t take long: in the Bay of Biscay the Atlantic Squadron bumps into none other than Vice-Admiral Nelson and a huge British fleet. The two commanders had previously fought at the Battle of the Nile as Rear-Admirals, and in reality weren’t due to meet for another 10 months at the Battle of Trafalgar. The British fleet greatly dwarfs the French, with Nelson commanding his own 122-gun Heavy 1st rate, a 1st rate, two 2nd rates, and three 3rd rates!
I auto-resolve the battle, resulting in an expected defeat. Villeneuve survives on board a battered Scipion, with only a 4th rate for company, but somehow his squadron managed to sink every British vessel except for Nelson’s Rose! The Royal Navy has suffered a pyrrhic victory, my navy upkeep costs have gone down by more than 1,000 gold, and what remains of the Atlantic Squadron flees south to join up with the Mediterranean Squadron next turn.
Parts of the French Empire are sold off, ready for them to be retaken in alphabetical order with the rest of Europe.
With those naval manoeuvres finished I start haggling with other nations to remove eleven French regions that are stopping me from starting my alphabetical challenge. I sell each region to a different ruler, to get as much cash from the sale and to stop any one nation becoming too powerful. I try to give territory that is towards the end of the alphabet to my allies, and those towards the start to my enemies, to prevent having to backstab my friends until I’m already forced to destroy them anyway.
While cash is important I also barter for as many technologies as I can: one technology can take 7 turns to research, gaining them now will pay dividends in growing my economy and strengthening my armed forces.
The main achievement of these region swaps, apart from losing all my income and making me only one region away from defeat, is completely changing the United Kingdom’s foreign policy: by letting George III have both a personal and political union with Hannover I convince the British Empire to abandon all of its allies, and instead join the side of its centuries-old nemesis. That recent battle in Biscay didn’t seem to matter! Along with becoming friends with Prussia I now feel less worried that Paris might be immediately marched on, though it’s hard to tell how long these new alliances will last.
The first unedited screenshot of the game. France is exempt from taxes, to help pretend it doesn’t exist, which doesn’t help the Empire’s negative income.
After all those region swaps I now only control France, as mentioned before I can’t remove this territory without automatically losing the game. So to try not to benefit from being forced to keep France I’ve set myself the rule that I cannot build anything there, cannot research there, cannot recruit any troops from Paris, and the region is exempt from taxes. I keep a company of Grenadiers à Cheval and two artillery batteries to defend the capital, together they cost 546 gold a turn in upkeep so Paris is losing me money!
Right, the game is now set up to start my challenge of conquering Europe in alphabetical order (sort of, ignore France). Which region do I need to capture first?
Alsace-Lorraine. Only just traded to the Austrian Empire, it is surrounded by French armies including one teleported from Hannover.
This is Alsace-Lorraine. Two images ago it became Austrian, in exchange for 5,530 gold and two technologies that would have taken me 14 turns to research. Unfortunately for Austria the region is surrounded by the bulk of the French Imperial Army, so the question isn’t how will I immediately conquer Alsace-Lorraine but can I do so without losing a single soldier?
The full might of the Imperial Army is amassed against Strasbourg, defended by a small number of Austrian infantrymen and some armed civilians.
Marshals Ney, Murat, and Bernadotte link up to immediately attack Strasbourg together. The full stack of units is supported by further armies commanded by Napoleon and Marshal Davot. Protecting the city is just five companies of Austrian line infantry, supported by hastily-armed citizens.
Alsace-Lorraine is captured, denting the expected deficit and allowing resources to be spent on improving the French military and economy.
It would be insanity to resist such an attack so the small Austrian infantry detachment wisely surrenders without a fight. Unfortunately, yet again, there is no battle to see here!
I choose to peacefully occupy Strasbourg and immediately start the construction of basic roads, a cannon factory, a musket manufactory, and an iron mine, plus a cantonment to replace the local tax office. Until that’s all built I can’t actually recruit any more soldiers, cavalry, or artillery (as I’m ignoring France existing). So avoiding a battle is boring but the troops I have are priceless!
The people of Alsace-Lorraine are unhappy under French rule, despite being Austrian for less time than it takes to read this sentence. Luckily I need to keep a large garrison here anyway to protect against my enemies to the east, and I also lower taxes a little to keep the region’s population and wealth growing, so the newly conquered population should be content for now.
OK, so far this challenge seems ridiculously easy, I captured my first region immediately without a single casualty. What’s next?
Aquitaine. Until very recently French, traded away to the Russian Empire.
This is Aquitaine. Like Alsace-Lorraine it was part of the French Empire but quickly traded away, this time to Russia, and like Strasbourg an enemy force has magically popped into existence to guard the region’s capital.
Unlike last time though there are no doom stacks waiting, ready to steamroll the city. What I do have is a random collection of units which originally guarded Bordeaux, Rennes, and Toulouse. A force of two companies of Chasseurs à Cheval (light cavalry) and two cohorts of the local National Guard is led by Captain Alexandre de Rosée, who waits for a company of Chevau-légers Lanciers (lancer cavalry) and another cohort of militia to reinforce him from Bretagne. Combined, this ragtag group of misfits should be enough to win against six battalions of Russian infantry squatting in Bordeaux. So attacking the city will need to wait until next turn, but before we move to Late January 1805 I have a few chores to do…
The French Empire is leaps and bounds ahead of every other nation in research, but this has ground to a halt until a college can be acquired.
One task is to think about researching new technologies. Most nations begin with all technologies locked, some are lucky to have already researched one or two when the game starts. France is luckiest of all with three technologies already researched: Army Corps Organisation, Conscription, and Division of Labour). Thanks to those earlier region trades the French now also understand Classical Economics), Fire and Advance), Improved Coppering), National Debt), and Public Schooling.
Those technologies provide various small economic and military bonuses which will take any other nation at least 50 turns to research, so I’m at a significant advantage on turn 1. However with my self-imposed rule of ignoring the existence of France I cannot use Orléans to start researching any new technologies, instead I send my two gentlemen east towards the first region which will provide a college I can use. It will take more than 10 turns for François-René de Chateaubriand and Jean Rapp to reach their destination, in the meantime my enemies will have unlocked a new technology each, and I have to hope the college they’re travelling to will be controlled by the French Empire by the time they arrive! Charles-Louis Schulmeister, French spy extraordinaire, joins them on the journey.
The French Council of State sees the appointment of a Keeper of the Seals, and new trade deals dent an expected deficit.
One other job to do before ending the first turn is to review who is running things. My starting ministers all have decent stats except for 3 star Keeper of the Seals Claude Ambroise Régnier. I replace him with a string of candidates until one, Oliver Molyneux, arrives with the Stallholder trait which give him a total of 4 management stars. That one extra star means the cost of repressing unrest in my regions is 3% cheaper, and that repression now has a +1 bonus. Small benefits like that could make or break my game in the long run!
Selling off all my regions severed all my trade routes. I reestablish all of them except the one with Spain, as I no longer have a sea or land connection with the Iberia Peninsula. Instead I create a trade agreement with the Electorate of Hesse-Kassel, worth 300 less gold than the Spanish agreement. Overall my trade income has dropped by 1,100 gold since I started this game, but at least I’m now only going to lose 2,880 in gold per turn!
This is just a draft, it will be taken down when I post the finished thing on the total war subreddit.

2024.05.19 22:18 AIaris currently peaking hard in comp (1660), any tips? (2s)

the post looks long, but theres only one paragraph you need to read, just skip to the “STORY OVER” part. the rest is just backstory/what ive found helps me
m normally around 1500ish, and anything above 1520 would be very high for me, but recently the past 2-3 days ive climbed up to my new peak, 1660 (my previous peak was 1610, on the last day of a season so it hardly counts, so this is really new to me)
(skip to “STORY OVER” f you dont care about how i got to this peak)
i was feeling good one night and partied with a random who was playing well, and we climbed to around 1580ish, and it turned out to be a gc3 on an alt, so i doubted my rank a little, but i asked him for some tips and that was that (his tip was to try and read the ball/play more and position for it, which ill touch on later)
decided to solo q, and was still winning which helped my confidence a bit, i ended up around 1620 at the end of the night
solo queued some more the next night, and i guess i was peaking. my plan was to get off after the first loss, lost a game due to tm8 lagging out while we were winning, so i stayed on, and i just went on a winning streak. i ended up peaking at 1661, lost a game bringing me to like 1650 something and got off
—STORY OVER—
what should i be doing to try and maintain this? i feel like im playing way out of my league, despite me winning and holding my own. ive been saving replays to review, trying to take mental notes of what i might be doing better and how the gameplay has changed from 1500 lobbies. ill write my findings below but id like some additional input on things to focus on, or how to maintain this rank, or how to peak harder and keep climbing?
FINDINGS:
i think ive focused on my reads more, not like wall reads, but more reading the play to position better. i put alot more thought into “where is the ball going to end up” and “where can i put myself in the best position when this happens” it sounds like common sense but its something i would always auto pilot on. and if im unsure, or there’s multiple possibilities, position for the worst case. this is pretty much the tip i got from the gc3 (just alot more brief) and id say this was the biggest difference
good vibes/confidence. i felt like i was playing way out of my rank, but i played like i belonged with confidence. i feel like the second i lose confidence in myself and start second guessing, ill start hesitating, making mistakes, etc. this goes kinda hand in hand with good vibes imo, some games id go down 2-0 but shake it off and not let it get in my head. alot of 2-0 comebacks were made
not tilt queuing, i get off (or atleast switch to cas) after 1-2 loses in a row, rarely 3 if im really feeling it after 2.
i feel like playing higher than normal has exposed some of my weaknesses, a tm8 commented that everytime they looked at my boost, it was low/zero. i never felt like i was low boost, but i guess i just used boost as i got it. so i should probably work on my routing over pads
staying disciplined, not going for risky/dumb stuff even if i feel confident in it. obv theres a point where if im 100% confident, ill go for it, but most of the time it ends up in a turnover and me overcommitted. also stuff like not always going for boost right after kickoff, hoping my tm8 has got it, stuff like that
anyways, is there anything i should be doing while im peaking/playing in a way higher rank than im used to? i appreciate any help in advance :)

2024.05.19 22:09 ThrowRAGoldBus1618 Am I(24F) acting like a child towards my (26M) boyfriend?

Reposting cause it got auto deleted the first time welp.
Hi friends. I’ve(24F) been seeing my (technically at this point) boyfriend(26M) for a few months. We’re both homebodies so almost all of our time together is at his place, just doing comfy stuff together.
A few weeks into our dating, I planned to go to his place after work, but he didn’t reply to my messages (for future reference, I don’t double text when he does that) so I assumed something came up and went home instead. 24 hours after his last message, he replied as if nothing had happened, saying he just fell asleep. I said I’d rather he not do that again, that he can ‘disappear’ but if we have something planned I just want at least an ‘okay’ when I send him a message telling him I’m ready, or for him to tell me we should rain check it. He says I have free access to his flat so it’s not like he needs to come get me down from the lobby, but I insist it’s just the only thing I ask, and he seems to be okay with it. It happens again a few weeks later and I tell him that if it happens again I’d block him.
All has been fine until yesterday. He disappeared for over a day, then yesterday messaged me asking to go there at 8pm, and asked if I could help him with a work document. I do it for him, send the document at like 7.40, he replies at this point. I get ready, and at around 8.20 I send him a message saying I’m ready and he just doesn’t reply. I waited two hours and then I just got my PJs on and stayed home.
This morning, he send me a message again as if nothing happened, asking if I can come earlier today. I ask why and he says it’s because of his internal clock, that he keeps sleeping and that he was awake for 30ish hours before falling asleep yesterday. Keep in mind he didn’t message me for over a day during those 30 hours. Also, he works from 7pm to 3am so it’s weird that his internal clock would make him sleep at that time. I tell him maybe some other day, and he gets defensive but not really anything too bad.
He says he needs to do planning when I come there (he works at home and doesn’t clean up before I get there, so idk what planning that is) and that he’s dealing with some stuff, and that I shouldn’t take it personally. Until then he’s being polite, and I keep my replies polite as well. I tell him I don’t ask anything at all of him, this is the only thing that I expect him to do. He changes the tone of his replies, saying I’m spoiled for having expectations of him, and he then brings up the fact that he pays for food and weed sometimes when I’m there. He literally never mentioned that being a problem before, and I tell him he should have brought that up. I have no issues paying for my stuff, or even helping him out financially, I just had no idea it was a problem.
He then starts talking about how he’s only bothering to reply to me because he hopes it’ll knock some sense into me, and that he gets paid less than I do so I should be thankful for the stuff he does. Again, I had no idea it was a problem, and he knows I got fired less than a week ago and I’m dealing with a costly and stressful legal case.
“You can come in and out whenever you want. You know about that, you know that I have you permission to walk in, so quit the drama. What is upsetting is believing you're really think you're in the right to be upset about anything, when l've been happily quiet about everything else” was one of his messages, literally just copied and pasted here.
I’m trying to be understanding of both his problems with me and his reasons for not replying when I’m going there, and trying not take it personally, but I can’t help but feel like my issues are being dismissed. I’m dealing with a lot in my life as well, so I know I’m extra sensitive, so I want to ask you guys to give me some outsider insight. Am I overreacting, friends?
Edit; also, just pointing out that we didn’t work together or in the same company. Some parts of the post make it seem that way, but before I got fired we were working at two different jobs with two different schedules, and I’d always be the one to change mine to spend time with him.

But my thoughts were: -Helbrecht and LT with Sword brethren - Apothecary biologis with aggressors - grimaldus with P. crusader squad
-Lancer for anti Tanks -Brutalis for hordes (and cause they’re so cool) -Redemptor (I’m thinking either plasma or Gatling make him more flexible) -Land raider redeemer for the “soccer mom life” and hauling the “kids round”
I’m debating on taking the redempto Brutalis out…
I’m not looking at anything competitive just something with utility
Thoughts?

2024.05.19 22:05 Legitimate-Sir5115 Search options

What are you guys using to find your unicorns aka MSRP Raptors? Cars.com, Auto Trader, Ford.com. Or do you just cold call Ford dealerships?
I’m in the market for a ‘24 non R. With the 37PP. Sadly I’m in California and MSRP is a four letter word round these parts. So out of state is probably my best bet.
I know I’ll ultimately have to call the dealer to get the true price. Just trying to expedite the process.
Thanks for any help/advice you can offer.

2024.05.19 22:02 Megatron-11 CC Student seeking internships. Any advice appreciated

I'm a CC student looking to work somewhere in the research sphere of engineering (ideally something in energy or sustainability if I can manage it), mainly looking for internships or lab technician positions so I can continue working through college as I've done so far. Another piece of info, I'm planning to transfer to a 4 year school at some point in the future to get my bachelor's. Should I include this somewhere? I've been denied many internships for this coming summefall and I'm seeking advice on how to hopefully improve that. Mainly looking for positions in my home state of Washington but open to ones further away. Thoughts?

First Major Victory :D (body text for details)
Was hard battle difficulty with slightly nerfed enemy stats and easy campaign difficulty (because of Legend of total war reccomending this)
Auto resolve said valiant defeat but I got a pyrrhic victory :D
I have a feeling the enemy army was just pure trash and thats why I won for the most part but I am still proud.

2024.05.19 21:59 ohyoumad721 2023 Rear wiper blade suggestions?

I have a 2023 sel. Haven't ever replaced the rear wiper. No sizes listed in the manual. Auto parts store says 14 but it is definitely 11 inches. It has a weird adaptor piece that no aftermarket ones I've seen so far use. Tried a few different auto parts places. Have any of you had this issue? What specific wiper were you able to replace it with? I'd like to not pay 35 for a wiper from the dealership.

2024.05.19 21:53 RealThanny Upgraded from TR 3960X to TR 7960X and did some performance testing

So I decided to bite the expensive bullet and upgrade my system from a Threadripper 3960X to a Threadripper 7960X.
I don't particularly need a high core count, though I can certainly use them all some of the time, but I can't use a toy computer platform like AM5, which has no room for expansion cards. But I do want the fastest per-core performance I can get, which makes TR 7000 the best I can do with a platform that's actually usable.
On the runup to actually doing the hardware swap, I decided to run a number of performance tests to see just how much faster the new setup is, using a handful of standard benchmarks, and some game testing.
Here's a Google spreadsheet with the data for the testing I did:
Sheet Link
All metrics in the sheet come from a three-run average. All the averages across tests are done with a geometric mean.
Before going over the tests a bit, here's the relevant hardware information:
Threadripper 3960X PBO 600W +200 auto-OC ASUS ROG Zenith II Extreme Alpha 128GB Kingston Server Premier DDR4-3200 KSM32ED8/32ME Unbuffered ECC CL22-22-22-52-74 (SPD)
Threadripper 7960X PBO 400W +200 auto-OC ASRock TRX50 WS 128GB Kingston Fury Renegade Pro DDR5-6400 KF564R32RBE2K4-128 Registered ECC CL32-39-39-80-119 (EXPO)
Sapphire Nitro+ 7900 XTX Stock settings for that card.
While I set the PBO limits for the 3960X to 600W, in reality it only draws up to about 360W. Also, the auto-OC value doesn't actually work. It maxes out at about 4.525GHz. The all-core fully loaded frequency ranges from 4.075GHZ to 4.125GHz.
The 7960X easily consumes 400W, and probably has some performance headroom left if given more power, but I think 400W is enough for my purposes. The highest recorded frequency is 5.775GHz, and the all-core fully loaded frequency is 5GHz.
I put a new boot SSD in the 7960X system, but restored my Windows 10 install to it from an image backup, so the operating system is both the same version and the same instance.
Cooling is a custom water loop, with an XSPC RayStorm Neo water block on the processor. It was a hardware transplant, so the cooling is identical with both setups.
There are three individual sheets in the document:
CPU Tests Game Tests 3DMark Tests
CPU Tests:
I used several versions of Cinebench and Blender Open Data (4.1.0), for standard tests that anyone can do. The Handbrake, WinRAR, and InfoZip tests use custom data that I'm not going to distribute, so you can't replicate those tests directly. Of all the tests, the Cinebench ST and InfoZip ones are single-threaded.
CPU Tests Summary:
The overall MT uplift is 52%, and the overall ST uplift is 45%.
3DMark Tests:
With the 3DMark tests, I ran most of the versions I have access to, going back to 3DMark06. I also included the CPU-only test called CPU Profile. 3DMark tests have always been significantly bottlenecked by the CPU, so you can see that most tests show a sizable uplift even in the graphics portion of the tests. The exception is 3DMark11, which is the only test they've released thus far where the graphics card is close to being the bottleneck. FireStrike Extreme is also more bound by the GPU than the rest, but not as much as with 3DMark11.
3DMark Result Summary:
The overall uplift for the graphics results is 39%, and for the CPU results is 41%.
Game Tests:
The game tests are all run at 2560x1440, the resolution I play at, and have the highest detail settings sans any kind of real-time ray-tracing (which I find useless at this point in time), and without any motion blur or depth of field effects (both of which are abhorrent and should be killed with fire). So this is not low-resolution, low-settings testing meant to show the largest difference between processors. This is meant to show the actual difference that I'll experience in games.
I chose a fairly small number of games I knew to have appreciable CPU bottlenecks, and added some from my not-yet-played library which have built-in benchmarks. With the built-in benchmarks, I also used MSI Afterburner to capture average and 1% low frame rates, with the exception of the Crysis tests, which run four in a row automatically, and wouldn't allow test separation.
A brief description of the in-game benchmarks, which would allow someone to approximate the same tests in some of them:
Shadow of the Tomb Raider:
Start across a small bridge from the hidden city market square. Cross the bridge, loop around the square, return to the bridge, making sure to stay level and look up on the stairs and while heading back towards the bridge.
Cyberpunk 2077:
Start at the entrance to Jig Jig street. Walk forward, across the small bridge, then turn right and loop back around towards the entrance again. Turn right at the entrance road and then turn left before the bridge, looping around to the right after that and crossing the small bridge from the other side back to where you started at the entrance.
Starfield:
Start at your ship landed in Akila. Walk towards the central building, then go up the stairs to the right. Go down stairs to the left twice, then go right to loop back around towards the entrance (past Laredo), then turn left and return to the nose of the ship.
The Witcher 3:
Start at the Hierarch Square fast travel point. Run (not sprint) straight on the left road out of the square, and keep following the road as it goes right around the outside of the square. Upon re-entering the square, go left up the square, then right to return to the fast travel.
Minecraft:
Use the Sodium renderer, use ResolutionControl+ to set 2.0x resolution (for anti-aliasing), set your render distance to 32, then go to a built-up base area with lots of stuff, and walk around a set course.
Game Test Summary:
As you can see with the Crysis results, that game is heavily CPU-bound. The "GPU" benchmark is just an aerial loop around the island, but runs 86% faster on the 7960X over the 3960X.
For the rest of the games, considering only the data collected with MSI Afterburner, there's an overall uplift of 42% on the average frame rates, and 46% on the 1% lows.
The lowest uplift was 19% on the Cyberpunk 2077 built-in average, where the uplift on the in-game average was 44%. The highest uplift was 67% in Minecraft, which is going to vary substantially by what kind of things have been built and collected where you are in the game. In my base, it was a very built-up area with plenty of entities, running minecarts, and basic redstone systems active. If I do a similar walk around the middle of nowhere, the average is 491fps with 1% lows of 142.8fps, and the GPU was much more loaded. The highest uplift in a more modern game was 59% in Starfield, which is pretty substantial.
I did also test Fallout 4, but had to discard the results. The performance dropped notably when using borderless window mode, and quite beyond that, the game is stuck in some kind of limbo where neither the CPU nor the GPU are bottlenecked. It's just stuck at a low frame rate (48fps, almost rock solid, with the 7960X) without maxing out the main render thread or coming even close to maxing out the GPU. In fact, I found that I could run the game at 5760x3240 using VSR without maxing out the GPU or losing any performance. That allows one to get better anti-aliasing than the game's TAA. While the frame rate is low, it feels bizarrely smooth. I'll have to look into that later to see if there's some way to get the engine to render more frames.
Conclusion:
I have to say I'm very disappointed with AMD for pricing their non-toy platform so high, and not including lower-core-count options in the non-workstation lineup. I also think, at these prices, that the CCD's should have V-cache, which would have had profound impacts on gaming performance.
That said, I'm not disappointed with the performance uplift. In some cases, it's exactly what I expected based on third-party reviews. In others, namely gaming, it's higher than I expected base on those same reviews. Part of that is probably due to the mediocre-speed DDR4 used with the 3960X, where ECC options were quite limited. With DDR5, the registered ECC options are notably better. The DDR5 kit has considerably better latency than the DDR4 kit (from 24.4% to 37.5% lower across the range), which definitely helps in games.
As a side note, while assembling and testing the 7960X system, I used a Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3 cooler with the SP6 adapter kit (which seems to do nothing but increase mounting pressure). I just wanted to relate how well that air cooler does with the processor. I only ran a couple Cinebench tests on air, but the results were very close to the ones done on water. I have that cooler on the 3960X right now, powered up as a motherboard-on-a-box, and it gets the same performance as water. Slightly more, at the moment, as basically all background tasks are disabled on that machine now. I'd probably recommend that over an AIO.
That concludes my somewhat wordy write-up.

2024.05.19 21:51 DarkWolf6901 Went to 1st meeting in years and they now worship the governing body

Visited my mom in another state here in the U.S. Congregation I grew up in. Out of curiosity I attended to see what changed.
Immediately upon entering I noticed every man had a beard, some growing large. The magazine desk was gone, the boxes for monthly time reports were gone. Everyone above 60 years old looked depressed, they’ve been waiting years for paradise, the last days seem to be lasting a VERY long time! With overlapping generations the last days may last forever.
Strangest part was governing body mentioned during prayers, and comments throughout the meeting. Children praised these men, with parents whispering in their ear what to say. They suddenly dimmed the lights and said, “let’s pay the upmost attention to our new governing body update”. I looked around and everyone’s eyes were fixed on the TV monitors eagerly awaiting what these men were about to say. The not very discreet slave appeared on the screen and began speaking. A few minutes later it ended. “Aren’t we all encouraged by what the governing body had to say”.
I don’t know if it’s because I woke up or if it’s this congregation. But it was weird. Everyone was not just drinking the CULT kool-aid, they were swimming in it. It’s so bizarre to sit back and watch them worship these men. They may say they don’t, but since they constantly praise them and obey them…that’s worship. The line is blurred between these men and God, the way they are spoken and admired. Makes me sick that my mom has auto donations setup for these men can drain her bank account. They’re giving false hope for their own gain, and it’s cruel. I predict in the future they’ll have statues dedicated to them or pictures on the wall.

When it comes to geolocation privacy and surveillance, what are the GPS tracking laws in Oregon? Let's break down the laws and what they mean for you. The unlawful use of a hidden GPS tracker occurs when you place a GPS device onto a motor vehicle without the consent of the owner of the motor vehicle, but there are some very important exceptions!
  1. Police: Law enforcement officers can equip a vehicle tracker to a motor vehicle of any private citizen as long as they follow the proper legal framework beforehand (acquiring a warrant).
  2. Owner Of The Motor Vehicle: Private companies or owners of a personal vehicle can use GPS tracking devices for auto-theft security.

If you want to use a tracking system to secretly track any individual's movements it is important you be careful so you don't violate the person's Fourth Amendment civil liberties. This starts by never entering the vehicle you wish to track! Also, do not trespass on someone's private property to equip the vehicle tracking device. That means the only way you can secretly track a vehicle and have a strong criminal defense (if you got caught) is if you 1) placed the tracker on the outside of the vehicle, and 2) and did so on public property. As the Electronic Frontier Foundation wrote, "[You can] attach GPS trackers to cars and individuals enabling precise round-the-clock surveillance". This is done with the powerful magnet mount that is designed for my tracking systems.

Unlawful use of electronic devices that utilize the global positioning system is a Class A misdemeanor. However, it becomes a Class C felony if the person using the tracker was previously convicted of stalking as part of the stalking protective orders.

2024.05.19 21:30 Vskg [Patch 1.000.304] In-Depth Support Stratagems Tier List for Helldivin' the Automatons (Difficulty 9)

[Patch 1.000.304] In-Depth Support Stratagems Tier List for Helldivin' the Automatons (Difficulty 9)
Support Stratagem Tierlist

Hello there divers!

It is well know to everyone that Helldiving the automatons is no easy task, which is why it is with utmost importance that your group is well equiped to deal with those pesky Hulks and Factory Striders.
This tier list serves the purpose to aid the choice of your trusty support statagems on this endeavoring task that is taking down Cyberstan again.
To preface, my opinion may not equal the absolute truth for everyone, but I hope that by providing well rounded thoughts I will be able to at the very least spark some discussions that the whole community can be benefitted by.

Topic 1 - Backpacks

While some may find it weird to not straight up jump to weapons, I find it of utmost importancy that Backpacks are explained first, as some of them viabilize many of the weapons present on the higher tiers of this tier list.
  • (S) Shield Backpack - If you consistently play Automaton Helldives, this shouldn't shock you at all. More than a rechargable permanent extra health, this backpack will absorb the impact of many ragdolling effects that would make the usage of any Support weapon difficult. The amount of value you get from this is simply insane and should always be on your loadout if your Support Weapon of choice doesn't require a backpack of their own.
  • (A) Supply Backpack - While it doesn't really give you any protections whatsoever, it serves a vital purpose of providing Ammo, Health Injections and Grenades on demand. Call in a Supply Drop and the guy with this Backpack can effectively duplicate each supply pack, being able to basically top up everyone on the team on cooldown. Without this, many ammo hungry primary/support weapons will feel lacking and this backpack solves that on it's own.
  • (Viable) Ballistic Shield Backpack - I get it, you want to frontline, and I deeply respect that, a Helldiver that can withstand Heavy Devastators and Factory Striders miniguns is a very valuable asset to the team. But the sad thing is that Rocket Devastators exist and they WILL fuck you up. The ballistic shield would really benefit by getting some blast resistance, like sure, you still get staggered, but the shield protecting you from any ragdoll effects seems reasonable and a nice direction to go buffing this Backpack.
  • (Borderline Trolling) Rovers - They get the chaff under control pretty well, but the amount of times this will unnecessarily aggro patrols is insane. The worst part is, it will pick fights with stuff it really can't take care of, like Hulks, Factory Striders and Tanks - stuff that is VERY common on a difficulty like Helldive.
  • (Borderline Trolling) Jump Pack - Amazing extra mobility, feels very good to use, can reach some very interesting High grounds and do some flashy movements on the battlefield. But that's basically it, even if you get the positioning of your dreams, Automatons have a very sus good accuracy and are able to hit you basically everywhere. And when you're deep into shit, the long cooldown won't help you a bit. This actually is pretty good on a Hit'n'Run playstyle, so it is not fully trolling going into it, just be mindful what the your purpose is with this on your loadout.

Topic 2 - Support Weapons

The part everyone is actually waiting for, the stars of the show, the pinacle of Helldivers gameplay, the bread and butter of all Divers. A diver without a support weapon is a sad one, and having it make them feel powerful is supposed to be their whole job.
  • (S) Auto Cannon - First and foremost, AH - It is Not op, It is Not op, It is Not op, It is Not op. This weapon is something else, it will deal with anything you throw at it quickly and flawlessly, has a very generous mag size and a very balanced reload time/animation. There just isn't a single thing to hate about it and even when I see that there is two of my divers with the same support weapon, if that weapon is the Auto Cannon - I'm actually overjoyed by it. Also, teaming up with it is badass and peak gameplay.
  • (S) Anti-Material Rifle - A good well-rounded weapon that has most of the same damage breakpoints as the Auto Cannon but on a sick-ass Sniper Rifle. It feels harder to take down gunships than the AC so it gets some demerits here, but It can do it just fine with good cover and a steady aim. Being able to reload it while running is also a very positive upside, so using this makes you feel alot more mobile in comparation to an AC user. It also does not come with a mandatory backpack, so it feels amazing to pair it with a Shield or Supply Backpack.
  • (S) Laser Cannon - Also a very well-rounded weapon. Instead of a bullet shooting weapon, this will materialize a no-damage dropoff laser beam that packs a HUGE punch if it comes in contact of any enemies weak points. But it suffers alot to any stagger or ragdoll effects, making it feel almost useless in the middle of some intense action. If that's you, give this a try with the Shield Backpack, you'll be surprised how much extra time you get for beaming up those weak spots and make you feel like a bot-killing menace. This might very well be the best gunship deleter in the game, so if that's also your thing, you should really give this support weapon a try.
  • (S) Expendable Anti-Tank - A low-cooldown 2 charges of Anti-Tank Missiles that'll take care of anything you desire. This is a god's gift when stuff gets tuff and you really gotta deal with 1 specific sonavabitch. Feels good to use and basically has no reload time (since you use one and then just grab the next one), but would really benefit from 1-shotting anything instead of 2-shotting stuff, a problem in general for many AT weapons.
  • (A) Heavy Machine Gun - I feel y'all confusion on this, as this weapon has some CLEAR weaknesses, but I would like to bring attention to many of it's awesome advantages after them. Reload time is too high - getting stuck on the same place for 7 seconds is fun to no one, the mag size is very restrictive so wise use and good aim are a must for this weapon, and the sights on this weapon are CLEARLY misaligned and make hitting distant shots VERY HARD. Now with that out the way let's talk why this weapon slaps: DPS on the maximum (950) RPM that is rivaled by no other weapon in the game, able to SHRED a Factory Strider's Belly in a couple of seconds, able to delete anything that dares expose their weakpoints near your position, can somewhat-realiably take care of hulks coming on a straight line toward you by hitting it's eye, and gets the job done against any structure or gunship with a decently good aim. Definitely not an S-tier weapon, but a good weapon to diversify your team's loadout.
  • (Viable) Anti-Tank Weapons [Recoiless/QuasaSpear] - They feel great to use, they are the heaviest hitters on the game. But even then, they can't reliably take down the stuff that they're supposed to be good at on 1-hit. It feels bad to hit a Hulk in the face with a Recoiless/Quasar and watch it still march toward you while you either gotta stop to reload or wait 15(!) seconds so that your Quasar's Windows 95 restarts up. The Spear can lock on and sometimes 1-hit them if you're far enough, but the finnicky lock on and restrictive backpack size just makes it feel lacking all-around. These weapons should really reliably 1-hit anything below a Factory Strider to be worthy to include more than one on the team.
  • (Borderline Trolling) Railgun - Look how they massacred my boy. Once a very versatile weapon, it is now delegated to a finnicky job of 1-shotting Hulks on the head if your aim is good enough, something that is not helped by the fact that the ADS on this weapon is horrible - the middle red dot basically makes it harder to hit those weak spots. It also basically has negative structure damage and straight up can't take down Gunships, Factory Striders and Tanks. You just feel very powerless with this gun, and hitting 90%+ shots just doesn't feel rewarding at all. If 90%+ shots 1-shot Factory Striders miniguns, Gunship engines and 2 shot Hulks/Tanks/Structures on their respective weakspots this weapon would rapidly jump to S tier and be my new main.
  • (Borderline Trolling) Grenade Launcher - Very good chaff + Devastator + Structure cleaner, with a decent enough damage to heatsinks to help with the big stuff. With that being said, it is hard to find angles to hit those weakspots and you are essentialy powerless the moment a Hulk decides you're their new bitch. Don't even try getting Gunships and Factory Striders as those are extremely tough an nigh impossible to hit. If you do your job well, you'll make the life of your team easier by dealing with those pesky Rocket/Heavy Devastators, so you're still relevant to the team, but really everyone would rather have an AC user instead of you.
  • (Borderline Trolling) Arc Thrower - Look how they massacred my boy. AH at it once again. It was exceptional with 50 meters range, with some clear weaknesses of not being able to do shit against Gunships, Tanks and Factory Striders, to being finnicky at 35 meters and needing to expose yourself to danger, to being straight up useless right now when Hulks aren't staggered by it anymore. It has good DPS and can stagger multiple Devastators/Berserkers at the same time, providing the team with a valuable breathing room, but it is just too hard to justify this given the amount of clear drawbacks that this now has. AH, please revert the 50meter range and Hulk's staggering power to it.
  • (Don't) Light/Medium Machine Guns/FlamethroweAirbust/Mech - Just... don't.

Conclusion

Automaton Helldive difficulty has many viable loadouts and weapons that feel great to use, but at the same time has many that just doesn't. Once again, I just wish every weapon to feel as great as the AC is to use, the understandably GOAT of support weapons that we have in the game right now. What are your thoughts on this, did I miss anything that makes weapons betteworse than I made them out to be? Curious to read what y'all think!

TL;DR:

2024.05.19 21:20 Decent_Promotion_822 Dishonest used car dealer and Auction house.

I purchased a vehicle last month from Govdeals.com. It is the 2017 Nisan Pathfinder with 38900 miles. After the SUV was delivered engine light came on. I did write the seller about it. Since then I have tried to get a Texas state inspection three times but it failed. I took the SUV to a Nissan dealership for repair. What they discover is shocking. The engine seems to have over 100000 miles because it is in bad condition. You sold me this SUV having only 38880 miles. I was willing to spend $1000 but the cost of repair is over $7000. I took the SUV to another reputable shop in my area and they agreed that it needed a timing chain and other parts. Well, the seller and the auction house will not refund or let me return the SUV. I am willing to pay $500 for transportation. Like a used car deals they gave me “Sold as it is” excuse. I did contacted govdeals.com and they told me to contact the seller first. The seller advertises this SUV with low mileage, repos from the bank, runs like new SUV. IN FACT, ALL HIS INVESTORIES ARE REPOED BY BANKS OR CREDIT UNION. This dealer is in Florida, JP AUTO WAREHOUSES INC. Can someone help me?

2024.05.19 21:12 naturalturkey My finances - what can I do better?

Hi, I’d like some feedback on my current situation:
I am 27F (if that matters) and I have about 100k in 3 rolling CDs, in increments of 25k (1 month) / 25k (3 month) / 50k (9 month). The percentage is roughly 5%ish but to be frank I don’t remember, as it changes a bit each time the CDs auto renew. This doesn’t include about ~3k that I have in returns which I haven’t yet withdrawn.
The reason I made this choice was because at the time, I had a reliable, decent-paying job and didn’t want my newly acquired money to just sit in my bank account. My circumstances have since changed: I quit that job last December to make a life-switch. I now work part-time at a museum (to gain experience in the field I want to work in) and I am going back to school to get a bachelors degree to help me pursue my future career. This should take me about 2 years.
I don’t make a lot of money from the part-time job. It ranges anywhere from about $200-300 per paycheck, two paychecks a month. Right now I have about 9k in my checking — money that I’ve been eating to help with bills and whatnot. I pay 1k in monthly rent, and about 400 in health insurance / dental / phone bill / gas. My 401k is on hold since I currently don’t make enough to put into the account.
I know that I am losing money, and I came to terms with this before I made the choice to quit. I just need time to go to school, volunteer and work at the museum for experience. So unfortunately, the job had to go.
My question is: what do you think I could do to improve my situation? I’d hate to eat into one of my CD accounts, but I think I will have to sooner rather than later. I am applying for scholarships to help cut down on school costs. I take on odd jobs (dog sitting/house sitting) when available. I would prefer not to take on another regular job unless it is part time and serves my future career in some way, which is a bit niche. Someone suggested real estate to me (buying property to rent out), but the housing market where I live is absurdly expensive and not to mention the homeowners insurance is unaffordable. Should I be looking into a different form of investing, other than the CDs?
To be clear with my expectations, I am not asking for some magical path that will help me live bill-free. I am just trying to lessen the strain and make things a bit easier for myself before I have to eat further into my money. Before anyone asks, yes I am cutting back on unnecessary expenditures, and no I do not have any debt.
Thanks for your time!

Kids are interested in working on a car.
Seeing cars <10k CAD with 100-200k (80-on 160K miles) on Auto Trader and and trying to decide between these two manual sedans.
Can I shadetree either of these cars? Parts hard to get / expensive? Any advice against either of these cars?
I have been working domestics 19667-2017 since the 80s, but Im not seeing any domestic 4 doors with sticks that I think the kids would be passionate about maintaining.
Your thoughts are appreciated
