Background/Training

This is known as “America’s Toughest Road Race” and I admit it lived up to the hype! I’ve been eyeing this race for a number of years but never pulled the trigger. I’ve done one full marathon and four other half marathons where they were all mostly flat. Canyonlands Half in Moab being the exception to the rule two years ago where the race was all downhill with elevation ascent 412 feet / descent 491 feet. I live in Virginia Beach where there is zero elevation so I had to learn on the fly with controlling my breathing during that race since I was not used to having to go up and down so much. For this race with a total elevation gain of 1,897 feet and equal loss of 1,897 feet, I knew I needed some kind of hill training if I was going to survive.
For reference, I am 5’7”, 157 pounds, and I’ve been running pretty regularly for the past 15 years although I wouldn’t categorize myself as your typical runner where you would run 4-5 days or more per week. I’ve had knee injuries in the distant past (ACL reconstructive and medial meniscus repair in my right knee and no ACL in my left knee) so I limit my running to 2-3 days a week and never on consecutive days. I remember when I started to inquire about training plans for my first half marathon back in 2011 that I read this one article that suggested “less is more”. It was a fascinating read and I adopted that mantra to create a training plan where I would run on Tuesdays (short run; 3-5 miles) and Thursdays (slightly longer run; 6-7 miles) with my long run on Saturdays (gradual build-up of a mile more a week to 12). Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays were reserved for strength training workouts (used the beachbody workouts at home, like P90X and others) and Sundays would either be a rest day or yoga day. I’ve used this approach for all my follow-on half marathons (PR 1:36:12) and even my one full marathon (PR 3:45:30). Another thing I did and continue to do is to not run for a certain time or pace. Whenever I ran, I ran by feel so I don’t look at my Garmin until the end of the training run.
This approach and training plan is definitely NOT for everyone but it worked well for me in the past so I adopted the same approach for this time around as well. Only exception is I needed hills to train on. Virginia Beach is flat as a pancake and I despise treadmills so the only place that I could get any kind of hill runs in was at Mount Trashmore. Mount Trashmore is a city park (landfill reuse) where they have a few sets of stairs that go up to the top, roughly 50-60 feet. So I trained by going up and down those steps while also running around the park, mixing it up with the frequency of going up and down the steps before taking a break by running the flat loop around the park and then repeating. I started my 3.5-month training plan in Jan and I did these Mount Trashmore running sessions of varying elevations and distances (both short and long runs) on 16 of 41 total runs leading up to the race. I gradually increased the elevation numbers, starting at 650 feet total gain on my first run and reaching 2100 feet gain on my last long run. For my strength training program, I followed Caroline Girvan’s Epic I that’s a free program on Youtube and once a week I would find a yoga program on Youtube as well. I would also occasionally foam roll (probably should do more than I did). I trained in Saucony Endorphin Speed 3s but had to retire them by the end of March. I tried the Speed 4s but the toe box was a little too narrow (not sure why they changed it!) and sizing up by half a size made them too loose, even with a runner’s knot. Since there were no more Speed 3s in my size, I upgraded to the Endorphin Pro 4s instead which were obviously more pricey and a different plate (carbon vs nylon) but the fit was perfect. I was able to get in 9 runs with them for a total of 50 miles going into the race. For reference, here is the monthly mileage I ran leading up to last Saturday’s race: Jan: 91.1 miles Feb: 74.6 miles Mar: 106.5 miles Apr: 33.7 miles

Pre-race

Heading into the race, I felt I did as much training as I could with what I had at my disposal with Mount Trashmore. There are two major elevation ascents/descents for this race: Mill Mountain and Peakwood. Mill Mountain is two miles to the top while Peakwood is a bit shorter but so much steeper (more about that in the next section). Problem with my training is that I couldn’t simulate going more than 60 feet at a time. I got to a point where I was going up and down them 10 times in a row each before continuing on my flat run around the lake and I felt that I built up enough endurance to be semi-successful for the race but truly wouldn’t know until I actually ran it. My initial goal was to just finish the race and do my best with it. I figured a sub 2:10 would be a phenomenal time. I properly tapered off my training for the last two weeks and my legs/body felt really fresh when I arrived for the outdoor expo at Elmwood Park last Friday. All the volunteers were really friendly and helpful as I picked up my race packet and explored some of the booths that were there. I carbed up that day by having Panera Bread for lunch (Italian sandwich) and Olive Garden for dinner (fettucine alfredo with shrimp and the zuppa Toscana soup). I tried to go to sleep early that night but I could hardly sleep. My Garmin agreed with a very low poor quality sleep score of 45/100 and total duration of 5 hrs 32 mins with lots of tossing and turning.

Race

I got up earlier than my 5:30 alarm. I tried to eat something for breakfast at the hotel lobby but wasn’t really hungry and just ate half of a blueberry muffin. I drank a 24-ounce hydration drink and shotgunned a 5-hour energy drink before driving over to the parking garage at 6:15 to secure a parking spot. I then sat in the car distracting myself with my phone until about 7 and then headed over to the dry-bag check-in. I then tried some warm-up stretches and paced back and forth a bunch of times, eager to get this started. I felt REALLY good that morning. Weather was perfect too (my Garmin said 61 but I think it was around 57 at the start), overcast and no sun throughout the race. I changed my goal with just finishing the race at to finishing it under 2 hours so I walked over and found the 2-hour pacer and stood next to him while waiting for the race to begin. Race was supposed to have started at 7:35 but they made an announcement that they were having some issues with something (never did get the full story for the delay). Finally the race started at 7:45 and off we went!
First mile was rolling hills until we started ascending up Mill Mountain for two miles. I felt the climb was a gradual one even though someone told me it was a 10% grade. The scenery going up was beautiful and I was able to maintain a steady pace going up. I especially enjoyed punching the super mario theme question mark box signs that spectators held up and seeing another similar box sign with what would pop out shortly thereafter lol! Eventually we reached the top with the huge Mill Mountain Star that runners were able to pose for pictures if they wanted (I did not), and then we went down! 2 miles back down and I was flying down that mountain on Prospect Avenue back down to the base (you can tell which mile times were the descent). Again, I wasn’t checking my watch at all like I normally don’t do but there was no doubt I was making excellent time as I made it back down to the bottom.
The course then transitioned into friendlier elevation runs along the river and parks for the next couple of miles and I noticed they had a timer display right after mile 6 and I was at 50 minutes. I figured maybe this race wasn’t so bad after all and I started having visions of a sub 1:45 instead. Those dreams were quickly vanquished when I reached Peakwood Drive (around mile 8 I think) and the second “mountain” which is a steep climb up through the lovely historic neighborhood of South Roanoke. Shoutout to all the locals who came out of their beautiful homes to root us all on with creative signs, words of encouragement, and fun chalk messages written on the road. I remember seeing a mannequin too outside someone’s house that made me laugh. I tried jogging up it at first, thinking it would be the same as Millwood and boy was I wrong! It was incredibly steep and for the first time ever I had to walk during a race. I adopted a walk-run-walk approach. I was sucking wind harder than I ever have before. At one point, it flattened out a little bit which to the uneducated (me) about this course would suggest that you are at the top but nope there’s still more to climb. I saw that I was getting closer when I noticed someone had written “500 feet to go” on the road with chalk. I walked/ran (mostly walked) every 100 feet until I reached the real top where they had a mimosa “aid” station. I know this since I grabbed one without realizing, chugged half of it, choked a little, and threw the rest away as I was running their little cul-de-sac before the great descent. I booked it back down the mountain (err, neighborhood via Rosalind Ave SW) in a full sprint, knowing I needed to make up some time and surprised myself with how well my body held up for those ~two miles. When I reached the bottom, I thought the rest of the race would be gentler but then I turned down 27th St SW and saw that I had to run up yet another hill on Jefferson St which I just couldn’t do. It was just as steep as Peakwood and I resigned to walking up it, praying it wasn’t going to be too far. After reaching the top of Jefferson, I once again sprinted down to mile marker 11 and I then I felt an unpleasant ”twitch” in my right calf. I shouted out to the high heavens to please not have it seize up and somehow it didn’t but I was cautious from that point on for the last couple of miles, which did include a few bridges to climb again. Every time I thought that was the last climb, another bridge would appear. I should have studied the course map more carefully. My calf twitched again with less than a mile to go but never seized up so I trucked it and never felt so happy with myself when I crossed that finish line and saw my time!

Post-race

I have to say it again. The race lived up to its hype. The post-race party was a blast! Drank some beewatechocolate milk, ate some pizza/bananas/granola bars, and even got some stretching and calf rolling done by some volunteer physical therapists under one of the tents! My calves, quads, hamstrings, hip flexors were all shot, even two days later they were still a bit sore. My feet felt great though! The Endorphin Pro 4s felt amazing throughout the entire race so two thumbs up for this shoe! There was a music festival too at the park which added to the celebratory atmosphere. In my view, this was a lot harder than the one flat marathon that I trained and raced strictly due to the elevation stresses that it placed on my body throughout the run. I don’t think I would ever sign up for this one again, unless I moved to a more hilly or mountainous region where I could train more properly since it became very boring and tedious to run the Mount Trashmore steps. I’m very proud of myself for the training I did to prepare for this race and for conquering it in the fashion that I did! My overall placement was 39th out of 836 half-marathon finishers and 5th out of 35 for males (45-49). My average pace was 8:13 min/mile and according to my Garmin I walked just 4 mins 8 secs of the race (definitely felt longer!). I give mad respect to those that took on the marathon (double the elevation!) and the double marathon?!?! I don’t know how we can do it but very impressed nonetheless!

2024.04.08 11:27 Bearrister18 16-month Progress Report - RSS Novice and Intermediate

Hi Paul and Hornstrength community,
I’ve posted rarely in this subreddit, but I wanted to provide my experience following RSS for the last 16 months. I’ve been on the intermediate plan since late summer 2023 and I’m about to start my first “cutting” phase. To cut to the chase, RSS has been a great experience and I’m the strongest I’ve ever been. Sorry this post ended up long, but I wouldn’t do justice to how much I’ve enjoyed and gotten out of RSS without providing context.
I’m in my early 40’s. I became fit and active 14 years ago (before that I was very overweight and completely out-of-shape), starting first with road cycling, mountain biking, P90X, CrossFit, and dabbles of other physical activities. I tended to stick with each activity for about 2-3 years before I became interested in something else.
The one form of exercise that I tried to do for most of this time period was barbell strength training, but typically as a means to an end (to be better at another fitness activity, usually either CrossFit or mountain biking). That meant I usually hit a wall at pretty low numbers. I followed Starting Strength and Greyskull Linear Progression (GSLP).
Towards the end of 2022, I hit a motivational wall after 3 years of focusing on running. That’s when I shifted to, for the first time in my “active” lifestyle, to strength training as an end unto itself. I wanted to see how strong I could get if I dedicated myself to just lifting.
I was going to go back to GSLP, but right at that time one of those Facebook targeted ads hit the mark - it was an ad for Horn Strength and the upcoming release of RSS. I knew of Horn Strength because one of my former CrossFit boxes (CrossFit Aviator) was basically in the same complex as Paul’s facility by LAX. I remember seeing the gym and being interested in checking it out, but of course I never did.
I immediately downloaded the book, upgraded my home gym, and got ready to get started…. But then I got nailed with a nasty round of COVID in December 2022 that knocked me out for almost 10 days and resulted in 13lb weight loss (I mention this because my starting weights are lower than they would’ve been otherwise).
With that background out of the way, let me get to my actual progress. I switched to the intermediate program about 8-months in.
Age: early 40’s Starting weight: 167; significantly upped my calories late 2023, currently about 180 Height: 5’6”
Work sets in lbs (5-rep) Squat: 160–> 295 Deadlift: 225–> 410 Bench: 145 —> 217.5 Strict Press: 87.5 -> 132.5
1-rep Max (June 2023 and now): Squat: 315 —> 345 DL: 420 —> 450 Bench: 230 —> 245 SP: 140 (didn’t test again)
I’ve loved the program, the progress, how I look and feel (the wife loves it compared to how I looked when I focused on running or other activities), and most of all, I’ve sincerely enjoyed it. I’m going to keep riding this out as long as possible. This program is so much more compatible with my current phase of life (parent of 2 young kids, don’t have hours to spend at the gym anymore). The book is very well-written and so much of Paul’s advice about not overthinking things and the mental aspects of working out are completely on-the-mark.
I look forward to cutting and shedding some vacation weight I put on the last week!

2024.03.26 08:31 OkLemon4831 Issues with my husband when we argue

I’m a 39f my husband 41m, have this issue when we get into fights. I will say our marriage is pretty much perfect 90% of the time.
Little back story with us. We don’t have any children, nor do we plan to, we don’t even have pets. We just have our jobs, each other and our family’s, which is how we want it. We both grew up in abusive households. I grew up to be the anxious attacher, and him the dismissive avoidant. Shocker.
Like I said our relationship is wonderful 90% of the time, accept when there is conflict. This man dotes over me, does the “little” things everyday that are literally everything! Our sex life is amazing, we have these regular relationship check ins, but when we fight it’s world war 3! For as sweet as he is, he can be so mean when he’s angry. The problem I’m running into now is I don’t know who is who? Like does he really mean what he’s saying when he angry?! Bc you say such nice things when you aren’t.
For example today we were going to do a CrossFit type workout, and we sit down to write it out. He gets a notebook and we start brain storming on what we wanna do, making suggestions back and forth. So far all is well. We’re almost done and he suggests an exercise, and I say yea, or what do you think about these and he gets angry bc he already wrote down what he had said. So just to be clear, he got upset with me bc I suggested a different exercise other than the one he had already written down in the note book. I ask why are you angry? He said bc you messed up my piece of paper and now it’s messy. He starts elevating his tone. Then he says never mind I don’t need to work out with you, you just do your own thing and I’ll do my thing. We both have different goals and we never see eye to eye on this. Mind you… I didn’t say, let’s do this one, I was suggesting things to do. All he could of said was, well I already wrote this down, and call me crazy but I don’t wanna mess my paper up, and I wouldn’t have cared! Also I’m familiar with CrossFit he’s only done p90x as far as his workouts go, and he has never done the lower body workouts of the p90x just his arms. I work out with him sometimes, he works out with me, but he argues with me a lot when it’s my wheel house we’ll call it. So idk if this is an ego thing or what.
Then he proceeds to say that I lack discipline, that he works out more than I do, blah blah blah. Basically whenever he’s angry he says and does the exact opposite of when he’s in a good mood.
So I guess what I’m asking is how to I handle this? Then tonight he apologized, but then literally pouted all night and didn’t talk to me after that. Like what? Bc I messed up your piece of paper? It’s like I can watch him throw a tempter tantrum and it’s rather off putting to me.

2024.03.04 23:19 ROKRATES No Zero Days

Original comment by- u/ryans01 . I cannot thank him enough.
Context : OP kept procrastinating which led to a pile of assignments due in minutes.
Ouch. Sounds like you're having a tough time max. That sucks. I've been there, so I kinda know what you're talking about. I've been in the ever circling vortex of self doubt, frustration, and loathing. It's no bueno. I know. If you don't mind lemme tell you a couple things. You can read em if you want, read em again later if you feel like it. But honestly man, if I spend all this time typing this out to you and you don't let it be a little tinder for your fire, well, you're just letting us both down. And you don't HAVE to do that. You don't HAVE to do anything. But you get to choose.
(Who am I? My name’s Ryan and I live in Canada. Just moved to a new city for a dream job that I got because of the rules below. I owe a lot of my success to people much cooler, kinder, more loving and greater than me. When I get the chance to maybe let a little bit of help out, it’s a way of thanking them. )
Rule numero uno - There are no more zero days. What's a zero day? A zero day is when you don't do a single fucking thing towards whatever dream or goal or want or whatever that you got going on. No more zeros. I'm not saying you gotta bust an essay out everyday, that's not the point. The point I'm trying to make is that you have to make yourself, promise yourself, that the new SYSTEM you live in is a NON-ZERO system. Didnt' do anything all fucking day and it's 11:58 PM? Write one sentence. One pushup. Read one page of that chapter. One. Because one is non zero. You feel me? When you're in the super vortex of being bummed your pattern of behaviour is keeping the vortex goin, that's what you're used to. Turning into productivity ultimate master of the universe doesn't happen from the vortex. It happens from a massive string of CONSISTENT NON ZEROS. That's rule number one. Do not forget.
La deuxieme regle - yeah i learnt french. its a canadian thing. please excuse the lack of accent graves, but lemme get into rule number 2. BE GRATEFUL TO THE 3 YOU'S. Uh what? 3 me's? That sounds like mumbo jumbo bullshit. News flash, there are three you's homeslice. There's the past you, the present you, and the future you. If you wanna love someone and have someone love you back, you gotta learn to love yourself, and the 3 you's are the key. Be GRATEFUL to the past you for the positive things you've done. And do favours for the future you like you would for your best bro. Feeling like shit today? Stop a second, think of a good decision you made yesterday. Salad and tuna instead of Big Mac? THANK YOU YOUNGER ME. Was yesterday a nonzero day because you wrote 200 words (hey, that's all you could muster)? THANK YOU YOUNGER ME. Saved up some coin over time to buy that sweet thing you wanted? THANK YOU. Second part of the 3 me's is you gotta do your future self a favour, just like you would for your best fucking friend (no best friend? you do now. You got 2. It's future and past you). Tired as hell and can't get off reddit/videogames/interwebs? fuck you present self, this one's for future me, i'm gonna rock out p90x Ab Ripper X for 17 minutes. I'm doing this one for future me. Alarm clock goes off and bed is too comfy? fuck you present self, this one's for my best friend, the future me. I'm up and going for a 5 km run (or 25 meter run, it's gotta be non zero). MAKE SURE YOU THANK YOUR OLD SELF for rocking out at the end of every.single.thing. that makes your life better. The cycle of doing something for someone else (future you) and thanking someone for the good in your life (past you) is key to building gratitude and productivity. Do not doubt me. Over time you should spread the gratitude to others who help you on your path.
Rule number 3- don't worry i'm gonna too long didnt' read this bad boy at the bottom (get a pencil and piece of paper to write it down. seriously. you physically need to scratch marks on paper) FORGIVE YOURSELF. I mean it. Maybe you got all the know-how, money, ability, strength and talent to do whatever is you wanna do. But lets say you still didn't do it. Now you're giving yourself shit for not doing what you need to, to be who you want to. Heads up champion, being dissapointed in yourself causes you to be less productive. Tried your best to have a nonzero day yesterday and it failed? so what. I forgive you previous self. I forgive you. But today? Today is a nonzero masterpiece to the best of my ability for future self. This one's for you future homes. Forgiveness man, use it. I forgive you. Say it out loud.
Last rule. Rule number 4, is the easiest and its three words. exercise and books. that's it. Pretty standard advice but when you exercise daily you actually get smarter. when you exercise you get high from endorphins (thanks body). when you exercise you clear your mind. when you exercise you are doing your future self a huge favour. Exercise is a leg on a three legged stool. Feel me? As for books, almost every fucking thing we've all ever thought of, or felt, or gone through, or wanted, or wanted to know how to do, or whatever, has been figured out by someone else. Get some books max. Post to reddit about not caring about yourself? Good first step! (nonzero day, thanks younger me for typing it out) You know what else you could do? Read 7 habits of highly successful people. Read "emotional intelligence". Read "From good to great". Read “thinking fast and slow”. Read books that will help you understand. Read the bodyweight fitness reddit and incorporate it into your workouts. (how's them pullups coming?) Reading is the fucking warp whistle from Super Mario 3. It gets you to the next level that much faster.
That’s about it man. There’s so much more when it comes to how to turn nonzero days into hugely nonzero days, but that’s not your mission right now. Your mission is nonzero and forgiveness and favours. You got 36 essays due in 24 minutes and its impossible to pull off? Your past self let you down big time, but hey… I forgive you. Do as much as you can in those 24 minutes and then move on.
I hope I helped a little bit max. I could write about this forever, but I promised myself I would go do a 15 minute run while listening to A. Skillz Beats Working Vol. 3. Gotta jet. One last piece of advice though. Regardless of whether or not reading this for the first time helps make your day better, if you wake up tomorrow, and you can’t remember the 4 rules I just laid out, please, please. Read this again.
Have an awesome fucking day ☺
tldr; 1. Nonzero days as much as you can. 2. The three you’s, gratitude and favours. 3. Forgiveness 4. Exercise and books (which is a sneaky way of saying self improvement, both physical, emotional and mental)

I use a relatively simple cheat to game console games. What I do is turn the switch on the controller I use into a button on the console, and then I press it to trigger cheats that give me a better experience. Here's what those che.

So there I was, sitting on campus with a book in one hand, and a beer in the other, when suddenly, I am interrupted. "We are concerned about your drinking," the police officer said. "I think they have already given you the magic word to ask the administration, so you can't answer anymore."
I looked at him for a second, and then I saw him. To me, he looked like a perfect clone of my dad. His hair was a little shaggier, his face slightly paler, and his gait was a little slower. The only difference was that he was a police officer. It was him. I was hallucinating. It had to be.
My best friend, Meyers, had dragged me out of my dorm room and taken me to this bar, a place with arcade games, karaoke, and $3 beers. I wasn't sure what I was in for, but I knew I wasn't going to like it.

2023.07.09 16:07 WholeYearInn Sunday Mornings - A Story of Recovery

Hi Everyone -
As I was sitting here scrolling through this sub - reading accounts of everyone's terrible yesterdays and vows of sobriety today, I wanted to share what worked for me.
I had no real 'rock bottom'; I never got arrested or any permanent legal ramifications, no divorce, kids still talk to me, etc, etc....
I am a 3 tour veteran and I drank heavily since the mid 2000s. I said stupid things all the time, cried too much. Generally, just making people uncomfortable and waking up with shame. About 2-3 years ago I realized that nothing was fun anymore and I had been depressed and anxious for a decade and half. Slowly getting fatter and fatter, more and more bored. No real interest in anything.
About 10 years ago I thought, "Hey maybe its the 100 Budweisers and bumps of that sweet sweet rye?", but did nothing about it because what else would I do? Who would I hang out with? Where would I go?
As I became more and more bored and less enthused with absolutely everything - I came across a TV Series at my library, The Great Courses, The Addicted Brain, by Thad Polk. He talked of something called the Nucleus Accumbens and how we are pretty much rewiring our brains pleasure centers.
I made the decision to try and reset my brain. Everytime I wanted a beer, or whiskey or anything to scratch the itch and relieve the boredom, I thought, "If you take a drink, your GABA receptors are going to reset. And it's going to be that much longer". I got the book Out of the Wreck I Rise from the library and read through the quotes from people who are much more eloquent than I about struggles with sobriety.
I made a list of all my shortcomings - things I didn't like about my self and surroundings that I let go during the past 18 years of not really paying attention to my life. I'm not in AA, but I assume it's akin to the Fearless Moral Inventory. Out of the wreck I rise became a mantra. Working to reset my neurochemistry became the goal.
It's been about 8 months and I'm reading again. I've lost about 25 pounds. I'm eating better, with the help of How Not to Die by Dr Greger. I started working out. I tried P90X and damn that was too hard. So I dropped down to P90 no X and let Tony Horton help me at my own pace. Then I went back to P90X. I'm not jacked or ripped, Just less fat and firmer. I started a grad program with the rest of my GI Bill to get out the job I hate but tolerated because I was too busy not paying attention to anything in my life. I started remembering conversations with my kids.
I don't know. I hope this helps someone, you all have been so helpful to me. Out of the wreck, we rise!

Civil Procedure MEGATHREAD (PART 1/2) for the LAST MINUTE MEE CREW: ALMOST all we ACTUALLY need to know.
Alright grab your Fiji Waters and iPhones and let's get back to work. We need to avoid this happening
A quick Redditorial up top from Editor-in-Chief Goat 🥸
When u/LadyLaw2023 first asked me to make a Civil Procedure Megathread, this was my reaction:
There's too much fucking information
But then I stopped and remembered that this test is not so much about knowledge, it is all about MINDSET and execution. I read this quote this morning from someone I follow on instagram named "Mega the Master P." I'm pretty sure he is an actual pimp but he often drops really profound truths. Also, u/KTFlaSh96 said I needed to make a LeBron James reference in my next post so I figured this could kill two birds with one stone.
Mega Speaks 🗣
So I hit up my old crew from law school from before I got suspended and we all linked up to show our haters the true meaning of joinder of parties. This is a candid video taken during our planning session for this Megathread.
It took us a while to perfect this \"MegaStar\" handshake
The UBE tests on federal civil procedure rules and federal statutes. Law school tests on federal civil procedure as well (remember the FRCP?) but sometimes state-level rules will sneak in. Your 1L class may have discussed how state courts have jurisdiction over basically any type of claim, even federal claims. Or possibly your class talked about long-arm statutes which allow a state court to reach out and grab defendants outside their jurisdiction. If these state laws respect the Constitution, they are allowed. But remember we are only dealing with federal law on the UBE.
Before we can even think about how cases are Civilly Procedure'd, we need to know which cases are even allowed to be heard Federally. So we start simply: with a discussion of subject matter jurisdiction, and personal jurisdiction.
We can begin with a story to help us understand the importance of jurisdiction:
After getting a 179 on the LSAT I found myself in Stanford, California, visiting the campus of the local law school there. I walked into a cafe and noticed two 1L's getting into a lively discussion about the meaning of jurisdiction for their Civil Procedure class. I smiled to myself, having done thousands of hours of 0L preparation already (I had consumed multiple hornbooks by Friedenthal, read the restatements, annotated Getting to Maybe 3 times, and audited courses on Khan Academy). So I posed this hypothetical question to them "what if your criminal law professor gave you an F in your Civil Procedure class?" They looked baffled and asked "who are you? what do you mean by that?"
As I grabbed my $19 coconut milk latte I turned to them while walking out the door, laughed and said "I'm SnooGoat, an incoming 1L who will be summering for Cravath soon. Think about what I've said: I've just taught both of you the importance of jurisdiction. I'll see you two at OCI, or maybe I won't" As I walked out one of them fainted.
Anyway let's get serious. I made this iceberg chart to capture how I think we are all feeling about the various topics in Civ Pro. Let me know if you have any proposed changes to it.
I dropped out in July when I realized I didn't understand Shady Grove
SMJ: The Beginning
Federal courts have subject matter jurisdiction over claims raising federal questions, involving diversity, and supplemental claims. MEE Hint: If the question asks "Is there subject matter jurisdiction - you must analyze ALL THREE OF THESE."
Federal courts absolutely **(D)**on't **(P)**lay with Divorce (alimony, custody) or Probate.
Federal Question Jurisdiction
When a plaintiff seeks relief under federal law IN THEIR COMPLAINT, the court has Federal Question jurisdiction. They cannot merely THINK a federal issue will come up in the answer or as a defense. MEE Trick: They will say "the Plaintiff is raising a state law tort claim but anticipates federal issues will be risen as a defense." Not allowed.
Diversity Jurisdiction
For diversity you need (1) completely different citizenship - no plaintiff can share citizenship with ANY defendant, and (2) the amount in controversy is MORE than $75,000.
MEE Trix R 4 Kids: Sometimes they will have the parties be diverse at the time of the cause of action, but not at the time the case is filed. They must be diverse at the time the case is FILED.
Trick 2: Other times they will have the claim look sketchy as fuck regarding damages. Remember, the court is not going to take out a TI-84 calculator and try to figure out how much damages you are likely to get. They will take your estimate of over $75,000 and just make sure it's in good faith and does not appear as a legal certainty that you couldn't get $75,000.01 in damages (remember, it doesn't matter what you ULTIMATELY get, just that you have a good faith pleading on the FACE. Look at Princess Leia factors - add all legally available damages, exclude costs and interests, injunctions have value too, and attorneys fees can be added)
Tip for 180 IQ MEE Scorers: One time they tested that bullshit "enormous" class action. When it's over $5,000,000 claimed by plaintiff's you only need minimal diversity (one P has to be diverse from one D)
Okay show me the money. How can we get to 75k?
You can add a single plaintiff's multiple claims, even if they are unrelated. You can't add multiple plaintiff's claims unless they share an undivided interest, like in some type of partnership situation. You cannot add claims against multiple defendants unless they're jointly and severally liable.
Okay Goat we have four days left and I'm only getting 3 hours of broken sleep a night. My brain is scrambled and I need to figure out Citizenship
For people, citizenship is determined by DOMICILE which is determined by FEET (for all you feet lovers out there, you know who you are), and BRAIN (for the sapiosexuals out there). We need physical presence in the state and INTENT to remain indefinitely. MEE Trick: They will always have in the problem like some enterprising young Zooey Deschanel style city girl who is trying to be quirky and relatable and she has like four residences. She goes to college at Pepperdine but all her friends live in New York and she wants to return to New York but she got injured but also she's into fashion and is working nights as a bottle girl at 1OAK Nightclub but her ex-boyfriend still lives in New York who is emotionally unavailable but still watches her stories and her dad bought her a farm in Iowa which she visits three months out of the year because she loves horses. Oh, she also has a sugar daddy in Connecticut who she met on SeekingArrangements but it's only a Pay-per-meet situation and she would only stay if she was given an allowance of $8k a month.
So now you have to look at all these dumbass facts and make the arguments on where she truly "intends" to remain indefinitely. Courts will try to determine the center of gravity of someone's life in this situation, so just make arguments on both sides.
Corporations - They have two state citizenships. Their Principal Place of Business (NERVE center where the executives work and make decisions, not "muscle" center where all their factories and shit are) and where they are incorporated (usually Delaware). Both need to be diverse from opposing party.
LLC's: Can have several state citizenships. They take on the citizenships of every member or partner. If any member is domiciled in an opposing party state, no diversity SMJ.
Alien v. Predator 2: All aliens are considered to be of the same "state." I think of this in my mind as "alien state." This is why two aliens can't sue each other in federal court under diversity, THEY ARE BOTH FROM ALIEN STATE. One has to be from "Predator" state. Diversity will not be destroyed if a citizen sues a foreign citizen (the alien just can't have dual citizenship or some shit of the same state as someone on the opposite side of the lawsuit).
Secret-Tip for giga-high scorers (don't even read unless you plan to score 165+ on MBE): An American PERMANENTLY domiciled abroad is not a citizen OR an alien and CANNOT use diversity jurisdiction to sue in America.
MBE Trick: Domicile of legal representatives does not matter (for dead people, infants, mentally incompetent people). Courts look to the domicile of the people they represent.
Supplemental Jurisdiction
Supplemental jurisdiction is when the court has SMJ over claims or counterclaims or crossclaims that can't independently get jurisdiction on their own but can RIDE shotgun with claims that can.
What claims can ride shotgun?
If they are "so related" to the driver claim that they "arise from a common nucleus of operative fact" (this is like claims involving the same event or state claims which are 100% similar to the federal ones).
But if the DRIVER claim is based only on diversity, the shotgun claim can't destroy diversity (aka make any plaintiff non-diverse from any plaintiff adversary)
Pro-tip: Third party claims usually won't destroy diversity since the defendant, not the plaintiff, is suing the third party and bringing them in to share liability and they are not plaintiff opponents.
These fucks are sneaky on the MBE fr fr: Always ask yourself FIRST if a claim can get into the party based on Federal Question jurisdiction. They will have a problem where they throw that in and try to get you to choose "supplemental." Nope.
Can a court refuse to let your claim ride shotgun with the other claims even if it's from a common nucleus and we don't mess up diversity?
Yes, they can still chase you out of the CHICKEN COOP.
Complex or novel state law issues would be raised by bringing it in
Original-jurisdiction invoking claims are all dismissed (so only supplemental claim would be there)
Other compelling reasons (if the court states one)
Predominates over the jurisdiction invoking claims (if the supplemental claim steals all the attention, they can dismiss it).
Removal Jurisdiction
When removing your case you can't show up to court in some DUSTY air-force 1's.
Defedants are the only ones who can remove. Hint: Yes, plaintiffs try to remove in some problems. Why the hell would a plaintiff be able to remove their case, THEY WERE THE ONES WHO FILED IT THERE.
Unanimous consent - all defendants must join in or consent to the removal (MBE Little Tip: if there are multiple defendants and a few have passed their thirty day window they can still consent to remove, so long as one persons window is still open!)
Subject matter jurisdiction in the federal court is needed.
Thirty days you need to file it (from the time when it became removable for you)
Year limitation. No removing after a year of the complaint being filed unless plaintiff plead in bad faith (lied about the $75k or prevented prior removal)
MBE POWER TIP WHICH WILL BE ON THE TEST 100%: The defendant cannot remove the case to a federal court in a state where any defendant lives. The whole point of the removal rule was to ELIMINATE home court advantage. The plaintiff aka the MASTER of where to originally file could pull the defendant into jurisdictions outside of his home state (and back in the day if you made some city slicker from the big apple go to some random state court in the backwaters of Alabama everyone would pretty much be like "who is this mf"). So you wanted the defendant to have a chance at an impartial federal forum with impartial federal rules supposedly. But if the defendant ALREADY lives in the state where the federal court sits, he ALREADY has home court advantage and there is no fear of bias so no removal. Bing bong fuck ya life.
Personal Jurisdiction
Courts can't order people around unless they have personal jurisdiction. For example, I was a Torts TA in Law School. So having subject matter jurisdiction was like being allowed to teach torts. Having personal jurisdiction was like being allowed to teach the students (even though in reality I only wanted to teach the female students)
We gotta have us a man that can do BOTH to be able to hear the case: both SMJ and PJ.
Okay we got SMJ. How do we get personal jurisdiction?
It's either TRADITIONAL bases or LONG-ARM my friends. MEE Tip: You're probably going to apply one or both in the question. Hint: if the question mentions long-arm applies, you apply long arm. If it says it DOESN'T apply, you apply traditional bases. Easy.
STEP 1: DO WE HAVE A TRADITIONAL BASES FOR PERSONAL JURISDICTION? Live. Tag. Or Die.
The traditional bases to get personal jurisdiction are:
Domicile - Domicile is your fixed and permanent home which you intend to remain. To CHANGE your domicile you have to (1) take up residence in a new state, and (2) intend to remain there. Domicile of corporations is (1) principal place of business state or (2) incorporation state. MEE Trick: They will say like "the corporation had 9,000 factories in Iowa... but their Executives and C-Suite all worked in a small office in California. California is the domicile. Brain Center NOT muscle center."
TAG You're it jurisdiction - if you're present in the state when served with process.
Consent or waiver - Consent or waiver works too. Appearance in court or signing a forum selection clause is express CONSENT, driving on a highway that has a law that says "anyone who drives here, we have jurisdiction over you" is IMPLIED CONSENT. Appearance in court and actually LITIGATING the case means you waived the issue of PJ son.
So you either LIVE there or get tagged there, or just totally give up on life and consent or waive. Live. Tag. Or Die. Easy to remember.
STEP 2: WE DIDN'T HAVE A TRADITIONAL BASES, HIT EM WITH THE LONG ARM OF THE LAW.
We need two things (1) long arm statute (it will tell us in the problem if we have one), and (2) constitutional due process.
Hint: The question will always say some bullshit like "the state's long-arm statute" allows personal jurisdiction to the same extent as the Constitution." This JUST means that the long-arm analysis is the SAME as the constitutional analysis: (1) sufficient minimum contacts, and (2) fair play and SUBSTANTIAL JUSTICE. (You actually have to say this on the test to get points for it).
Okay now I'm speeding this outline into *HYPERDRIVE*
PRONG 1: SUFFICIENT MINIMUM CONTACTS
Is there an easy way to satisfy this? Yea. General Jurisdiction.
General Jurisdiction satisfies Minimum Contacts... but this is easy. It's just when the defendant's contacts are so continuous and systematic they are "essentially at home" in the forum state. People = Domicile. Corporations = PPB & Incorp. You know this.
Okay let's talk about what they will actually test us on...
Specific Jurisdiction: The Real Minimum Contacts Analysis aka Out-of-state defendants fucking shit up in YOUR state with their contacts
First the claim must arise out of defendant's sufficient contacts with the forum state. What does arise mean you ask? It's about relatedness and connection. Think of a four way relationship between the defendant, the contacts, the forum, and the litigation. Does it all match up? Talk about whether the contacts relate to or actually occurred in the forum state.
Goat... they definitely relate. But how do I know if they're sufficient?
Nobody fucking knows you little shit. You need to look at the gravity and NATURE of aforementioned contacts. PURPOSEFUL AVAILMENT + FORESEEABILITY. If you purposefully availed yourself of all the good shit the state had to offer like police and infrastructure and business laws such that it would be FORESEEABLE for you to be haled into court there**... you're going to court, because your contacts were sufficient.** The MEE loves it when someone sells goods in a state or has some loan shark company start having people pay them bogus ass loans in another state (both purposeful availment) If you send some defective products and shit into a state purposefully... it's foreseeable you should be sued there. You guys are getting this stuff. You don't have to be in a state to purposefully avail and have foreseeability, it's all about you putting your ENERGY into fucking with that state.
If you BLANK on this stuff remember: Domicile. Presence. Consent. Related Contacts. Fairness. Live. Tag. Die. Fair Four Way Relationship.
A quick word on the internet: The more interactive a website is, the more likely a court will find personal jurisdiction (where you can buy shit and it has advertisements directed at you, etc). A passive website that only has information about how to raise radishes or quit pornography or some shit, a court will not find jurisdiction.
PRONG 2: FAIR PLAY AND SUBSTANTIAL JUSTICE
Fair Play mnemonic: Watch out for the FEDS.
Forum interest (state wants to protect its residents against your psychotic borderline ass)
Efficiency (where the witnesses at?)
Defendant burdens (how far away is it? hint: for a bigass corporation, they will send you to Juneau Alaska and not give a shit)
Social Policy (would personal jurisdiction advance their social policies... make some bullshit up).
and remember... we need either general OR specific + Fair Play. But either one we get... we still analyze fair play later on.
My face if they give us an MEE on any of this boring shit I just talked about
Let's talk Venue, Forum Non Conveniens and Transfer (but quickly since we're all bored)
SMJ gets us into court, PJ gets us all to RSVP, and Venue gives us the GPS directions of the court.
Think of a beautiful fancy venue to host an ice cream social with your best friends. Venue is proper wherever I can serve you APpetizerS (yea I really just said that - get over it. I've had 3 hours of sleep)
"Any if all" - venue proper in a district where any defendant resides, if all reside in the same state
Personal Jurisdiction fallback - if no other avenues to venue give you any options, venue is in ANY district that has personal jurisdiction over ANY defendant. There is ALWAYS proper PJ somewhere kids. (this should've been #3 but my mnemonic made it #2 lol)
Substantial events or omissions - venue is proper where a SUBSTANTIAL part of the event or omissions giving rise to the claim happened.
Alien Weather Balloons: If the suit is against an alien, venue is proper anywhere.
Land: If the suit is about ownership, possession or INJURY to land, proper venue always includes the district where the land is. T14 Trick: These lunatics sometimes try to test us on fraud relating to land primarily happening in ANOTHER state. If the suit is only about fraud it should take place where the fraud happened, not where the land is.
Forum Non Conveniens: Court looks at the case and says "okay we got PJ, SMJ and Venue but this case is just non conveniens... it's better off somewhere else" They weigh public and private factors. Private (convenience, location of evidence) and public (public interest in hearing this case in a particular forum, having juries with a connection to the issues).
Transfer: For party and witness convenience and in the interests of justice, a federal court can transfer any civil case to another federal district where it could've been brought (when it was originally filed) or where all parties consent to go. (MBE Hint: Choice of law rules are used from the FIRST COURT, not the new court (they usually test SOL issues here). If venue was improper, they can dismiss or transfer.
Service: Plaintiff gotta serve within 90 days.
Citizens: Deliver a copy at the house, with an agent, or someone who resides there of a reasonable age (16 is okay, 4 isn't)
Foreigner: Certified mail with signature or delivering it personally to Dubai
Business Entity: Deliver to officer or agent. (CEO, etc.)
Preliminary Injunction/TRO: Gotta preserve the status quo out here or I'll Punch U.
I'll (Irreparable injury if they don't stop bulldozers from plowing down your house) Punch (public interests favor it) U (you will likely have ultimate success on the merits, but even so they'll still make you post money to give to the other side in case you're on some bullshit).
Both have pretty much the same factors. TRO is 14 days max and can be given without notice, injunction is longer.
Or I like LIE as a mnemonic: Likelihood, Irreparable Injury, Equites. This one is easier to remember low key.
Pleadings: Complaint has three things: Jurisdiction, short and plain statement to create plausible claim for relief (enough to put the other side on notice aka notice pleading), and demand for $. You only have to plead certain stuff more specifically like fraud, mistake and special damages (they call this pleading with particularity, it sounds like some weird new age book title).
Answer: You can go halfsies and admit or deny in part, deny everything, or say you don't have enough info. If you don't respond to an allegation it's admitted (unless it's damages). Then state your affirmative defenses. 21 Savage days to answer complaint.
Amending: You get an amendment as a matter of course within 21 days if no response pleading was filed. Otherwise you need court (they will almost always give because they don't like to go forward with a fucked up lawsuit) or other party approval.
Relation back amending: Let's say you file right before the Statute of Limitations and then it passes and you're like "oh shit... I had a new claim but now I'm time-barred from filing it). Amended pleadings relate back to the date of the original pleading if they concern the same transaction, conduct or occurrence as the original pleading. ALERT: If a new party is added, the amended complaint will only relate back if the new party receives NOTICE of the action, the new party KNEW that you made a mistake and they should've been named (like a small error in their name), and it occurs WITHIN 90 days of filing. Remember: P90x. Plaintiff fucked up the name, 90 days. Something about notice. You get the picture.
Rule 11 Sanctions: You have to sign shit in the federal court. Anyone seen a federal filing that's like "I hereby certify this is filed in accordance on Feb. 17 in compliance with ECF/CM and the Court blah blah." You can't try any NEW shit with em.
No improper purpose, Evidence supports everything, and Warranted by existing law.
Analysis: I had a homie who is a lawyer and represented his lover against her ex-fiance (he home wrecked them basically and fiancé was suing for return of 70k ring). Ex-fiance kept filing motions to DEPOSE lawyer homewrecker guy and my homie kept being like "STOP DEPOSING ME, I'm the OPPOSING LAWYER BRO. I DON'T EVEN KNOW THIS GIRL." And he kept accusing my homie of like being a party with info. So the judge hit the guy with 10k sanctions. Then we were all out to dinner (me, lawyer guy and lover chick) and he was like making out with her at the table and then the judge was just over in the other table like wtf.
Anyway so court can move for sanctions on their own but if a party moves they have to give the other party a gentlemanly 21 days to correct their fuckery. Depending on how big the fuck up is a court can give an adverse inference, dismiss the case, money damages (but usually not against the party themselves if the lawyer was at fault).
The MEE has all types of funny ass sanctions problems. There was one where a lawyer got a case and had it for like a week but didn't interview the client. So when they asked him for info in the admissions he just denied everything: who the parties were, their address, their occupation as truckers. The court was like wtf you lazy idiot, you don't even know who these people ARE. He got hit with sanctions. The court will rarely dismiss a case though unless it's like INSANE what the lawyer did. I heard a story about a plaintiffs lawyer who was sleeping with a law student clerk who worked for a judge during a BIG money personal injury trial he was part of ($25m+), and the jury gave a question to the judge during deliberations "we are thinking of giving a defense verdict, we think plaintiff had a pre-existing condition, is that okay?" and she TEXTED the lawyer and he CALLED the other side and settled with them based on this information BEFORE THE OTHER PARTY KNEW ABOUT THE JURY QUESTION lol. This was an insane sanctions situation I think.
The Dreaded Joinder
Let's Join Claims
Counter-claims: Counter-claims are claims you have against the plaintiff and can be included in the answer. Any claim is allowed. If it arises out of the same event and you don't bring it, that's a compulsory counterclaim and if you don't bring it you waive it.
Cross-Claims (Same side of the V): Claims against co-defendants THAT ARE ALREADY THERE (so there must be two co-defendants for this at least). They are never compulsory and you can only bring if you have SMJ and they arise out of the same event as pending claims against you. Crossclaims CANNOT shift liability from you to a third party outside the lawsuit (they are more for stuff like indemnification and contribution from the other existing defendants - unlike IMPLEADER where we can try to shift all or part of the blame to someone else and bring in new third parties to blame).
Easter Egg: A plaintiff can't CROSS-CLAIM until the defendant counterclaims him. Because no one is accusing him of anything lol. He filed a lawsuit accusing someone else of some shit, and then he can't just try to get someone else to pay for a non-existent counter-strike that the defendant never launched.
Hint: MEE has only tested cross-claims once I think.
Let's Join Parties
You've seen the dry, depression-inducing adaptibar explanation about FRCP Rule twenty over 46 times... but you've never fully understood it. So let's talk about how to join parties. Three steps.
Step 1: Can we join these peeps
Basically the deal is you can join parties if (1) you have a claim against them rising out of the same event (in the MEE problem it will always be like some major multi-car crash or some shit) and (2) we got ONE COMMON QUESTION OF FACT OR LAW (usually as simple as whether someone was negligent or not).
Step 2: Must we join them
Parties are required to be joined if their absence would break the court's ability to give everyone enough money, their absence would fuck up that parties ability to protect their interest, or there are risks of inconsistent obligations without having one party (aka two parties who want the same land and we leave out one). MBE Gunner-Tip: Tortfeasors that are joint and several are permissive, not required parties. Because you could get the FULL bread from any of them then they could go after each other, so they don't even need to be here
Step 3 - Must our conscience dismiss them aka are they INDISPENSABLE (courts balance the four P's when deciding if they will dismiss or proceed)
Four P's to consider. Plaintiff interest in forum, prejudicial risk to parties (inadequate judgment), potential mitigation of risks (maybe join them in state court? can we shape the relief in such a way to protect absentee person?), and public interest in complete resolution.
Impleader
Gather around everyone and let's discuss blaming other people for our own problems. The impleader is a derivative liability action which can be brought within 14 days of the answer.
Example: I crash my beautiful new Rivian electric vehicle into u/nycchick_ 2024 mauve Aston Martin Valhalla hybrid supercar. I'm like "holy fuck I just hit this $7 million mauve super-car that isn't even available on the market and I don't have insurance." She sues me and then I realize my brakes were broken on my new Rivian so I sue Rivian and say they owe her any money for her cainjury. Boom. Impleaded.
What if you're pissed you got left out of the joinder party? You want to be about all that drama and jump in and INTERVENE
We all remember that one fateful MEE in July 2014 when the hippies who wanted to save the forest tried to intervene when the logging company smashed down half the amazon rainforest to make paper straws.
Just remember The Three Eyes (I's) of a Multi-Eyed Cyclops. I stared at this for a while and had to google Cyclops and realized the whole point is they only have one eye, but I was too lazy to change it)
You can intervene if have an Interest which would be Impaired and the current parties are Inadequate. That is all. See you all at the testing center on Tuesday.
Interpleader
Imagine two kids are fighting over a bouncy ball but you own the bouncy ball and are their parent. So you put them into a separate room and are like "kids... we have to learn how to share the ball. now Danny you got it first so now Brad gets to play with it" (I don't know anything about parenting... is this how it's done?)
You can bring two people into a lawsuit by interpleading them together to avoid multiple and inconsistent allegations. Two types of interpleader:
Guys the big difference is the rule interpleader you need the same 75k property in controversy amount we normally have and statutory we need $500 and minimal diversity (by at least two claimants). So I remember like a RULER of a country is super powerful, so they have the bigger amount in controversy needed.
RULE(R): Normal SMJ, PJ, Venue and service. $75k.
Statutory: Property worth at least $500 and there's diversity between at least two claimants. Service and PJ are nationwide and venue is proper anywhere a claimant resides.
Class Action
I CANT even with this material anymore, RIP my life.
Requirements:
Common question (class shares at least one question of law or fact)
Adequate representation (representatives adequately represent the class)
Numerous - claims are so numerous that joinder is impractical
Typical - class rep claims are typical of the class
Types of Class Actions
Risk of harm - normal actions risk harm to the class or the defendant
Injunction - when the class seeks an injunction or declaratory relief
Predominating commonality and superiority - common questions predominate, and a class action just works better and is easier.
If damages are sought, rep must notify everyone as best as they can of their right to opt out. No opting out = you've now opted into the lawsuit. Settlement must be approved by the court after feedback from class members.
Joinder over, that wasn't so bad 💥🏌🏻
Part 2 Next: Discovery and onwards 😉 (I ran out of space with all my dumbass pictures lol)

2022.12.22 16:52 young_oboe P90x first timer, first workout in the books

Ive been using another workout app for the last few years but began to feel stagnant and going through the motions. I was looking for something else. I did some looking online but there are SO many programs and so many apps.
I remembered P90X and Insanity and how everyone I knew did it back in the day, I was curious if the p90x workout still held up over time. The results my friends and family had were undeniable. I was pleasantly surprised to stumble upon this subreddit to get answers to some of my lingering questions, seems like a great community here.
So I signed up on beach body and did the plyometric workout today just to gauge how I'd fare with the program. I'm pretty athletic and my previous program was mostly HIIT but only about 30 min for 4 days vs 1hr 6 days a week, to my surprise I came out alive. About ten years ago when i was in my early 20's I had tried one of the P90X exercises and i couldnt finish it, so I feel amped and motivated.
Tony keeps me going, his off the cuff comments crack me up, but I really appreciate his emphasis on safety, good form, and knowing your limit. I like that he shows modifications. If you have the beachbody app theres a lot of comprehensive material to go through regarding the workouts and nutrition which I also like. I also seem to read it all in his voice?
I'm looking to lean out and get my diet in check, and I'm excited to work through this journey.
Clearly I'm not a "Start on Monday" or "Start January 1" person.
I pushed play today

2022.11.26 17:07 willf20 Finished!!

Finished!!
I did it! Here’s my day 1 vs day 75. I’m 5’7” and lost 13 lbs (185 to 172) and gained some muscle. Finished on Black Friday with leg day!
I only had a bench, free weights, and bands at home. They worked fine but I’m needing some heavier weights now. Might get me a Black Friday PRX setup as a reward? I used a 4-day rotation: 1. Chest, tris, shoulders 2. Back, bis, forearms 3. Legs & abs 4. P90X X Stretch, Agility X, etc. I feel like this day is crucial for me as I’m 40 now and have been injury prone in the past.
For my outdoor workout, I usually ran/jogged/walked. Had a few days of swimming laps, playing 1 on 1 basketball, or doing agility/speed drills with my son who plays football.
When I started, I walked the whole 45 minutes. After a week or two, I’d walk a lap/run a lap while my son was at football practice. By the last week, I ran/jogged the whole time, getting in almost 4 miles in the 45 minutes. I used the Runkeeper app to track my runs. It’s really motivating seeing the progress and trying to beat my best.
For diet, I just made sure to get 4 servings of protein, 3 servings of vegetables, 2 servings of fruit, and nothing with added sugar as that’s my weakness. I can kill a whole batch of cookies in a sitting, LOL. I chose not to count calories or go ultra strict on diet for two reasons. First, I’m super busy and out and about all day with work as a Realtor and two kids in sports, etc., so I didn’t want to not be able to find a healthy option at a restaurant as needed. And second, I wanted to do something that would be sustainable long-term after 75 Hard. I didn’t want to fall off the deep end on day 76!
I read Rich Dad Poor Dad, The Magic of Thinking Big, and am almost done with Think and Grow Rich. All 3 books, combined with the program, have contributed greatly to improving my mental toughness. I’m much more positive and determined than before and feel like my life in general is on an upward trajectory.
The days where I grew the most were the most challenging ones. One day I got a flat tire and totally cratered my day in terms of schedule. Got home at 4pm instead of 10am from an errand. So did my first workout at 4pm, took my wife on a long overdue date, drink way too many waters at Outback, and finished my run and reading at 11:45pm that night. From that day on, I did my first workout, progress pic, and reading at 6am. I had a work conference for a week in Vegas. I’d do a run down the strip at night and made sure to get in the whole program even though I was the odd one out with my coworkers. I went to a major birthday party and couldn’t do cake or champagne. And of course, Thanksgiving meant no cranberries, pie, etc. In each of these instances, I leveled up. My confidence and determination grew. By the end, I was cruising and there was no way I wasn’t going to finish.
I was successful in business and life prior to the program, but like Andy describes, I had “arrived” to some extent, and became too comfortable, lazy and complacent with most things. I think of my high school football coach who would always say, “You’re either green and growing, or ripe and rotting.” I haven’t been in growth mode for years until these past 75 days. Now I’m embracing being uncomfortable, growing everyday in numerous ways, and have a much more positive outlook.
I already worked out and read again this morning. I’m definitely going to continue on with Live Hard and keep moving in the right direction!

2022.09.14 05:05 cymbidium0905 Non Zero Days Reminder

A couple of years ago (I think) someone replied or posted this to a post on reddit about going through a hard time. I forgot to save the user but I saved the message. I needed this today and thought I would share once again. Thank you, internet stranger.
“No More Zero Days Ouch.
Have an awesome fucking day ☺”

2022.08.31 16:20 Tarviitz I extended the cliffhangers from Doug's LinkedIn

after rewatching the VOD for the AI LinkedIn rewrite video, I noticed that most of them ended with cliffhangers so I extended them with GPT-3 (there may be some minor differences from the original in the prompts as a side effect of the correction stage)
Youtube:
In the videogame Skyrim, I create mods that spawn cheese, kill Fondle, and slaughter zombies with a potato. I also replace the statue of a woman holding a statue of a sword with a weeping man holding a statue of a sword that isn't an actual sword. And then I buy the woman a copy of Limbo.
I'm a god.
I call myself Diablo the Cheater. As far as I know, I'm the only person who writes a list of cheating cheats and uses it in-game. My mod turned the game into an interdimensional sex simulator (powered by a fucking necromancer), and I use that game on a daily basis. To date, I've cheated in thirty games. Twenty-one of them were developed by other users, and the other two were made by me.
And today, this motherfucker is named after me.
I use a relatively simple cheat to game console games. What I do is turn the switch on the controller I use into a button on the console, and then I press it to trigger cheats that give me a better experience. Here's what those cheats are.
In skyrim, I use a mod that allows me to kill anyone without any consequences. It's called the Killswitch Mod, and it's amazing.
I also have a mod that makes all of the animals in the game drop cheese when they die. So basically, if there's an animal nearby, I can just wait for it to die and then collect its delicious cheese loot.
And finally, I have a mod that makes it so that every time I kill a zombie, it drops a potato. So basically, I can just run around slaughtering zombies and collecting potatoes. It's like the perfect game for me.
So, there you have it. That's how I cheat in video games. It's not complicated, but it works for me. And that's all that matters.
Tempo Storm:
I led a huge team. A huge, high powered, intimidating team.
The likes of which you can't even imagine. Our current Vice President is this guy: When he came to do a breakout session on leadership, I remember sitting there thinking "holy crap, this is it." This is the guy that I want to follow for the next few years."
These were the values I had as a staff member. These were the leadership lessons I would tell my current team. I was even envious of the ease with which he commanded respect. "Big. Guy. Know" is the perfect description of our Vice President. He knows what he's doing, and he has the respect of everyone on our team. Thanks to him, we are able to achieve great things as a group.
So, I nominated our Vice President to become our leader. He accepted, and he has been leading us ever since. Under his leadership, our team has made great strides forward. We are more organized and productive than ever before.
Leadership is not about having the biggest title or being the most popular person in the room; it's about taking charge when no one else will and making things happen even when it seems impossible
ESL Gaming:
#YoueverwatchedHearthstonein2016or2017?
I led almost every major tournament, including the last two BlizzCons, and I’m sure you’ve seen me at the top of the leaderboard.
I’m not going to lie to you, I’m a pretty good player. I’ve been playing Hearthstone for almost a year now, and I’ve made a lot of progress. I’m not the best, but I’m pretty close.
I’m not going to lie to you, I’m a pretty good player. I’ve been playing Hearthstone for almost a year now, and I’ve made a lot of progress. I’m not the best, but I’m pretty close.
But I’m not going to lie to you, I’m not the best.
I’m not going to lie to you, I’m not the best.
I’m not going to lie to you, I’m not the best.
EA:
"My programming had a profound, but sinister, effect on the profits of Electronic Arts. In only 20 months, the money flowing into the company increased fivefold, from $3.4 billion to $17.5 billion.
"It's safe to say that's the single most important thing that happened to EA in those early years," says Chris Connor, who now works at EA.
"That long-term effect on the company's bottom line might have led EA to take long-term risks with their employees' health and well-being, but in the 1990s, even the sharpest game companies were focused on short-term profits. For instance, maybe you remember EA as the company that had Christmas parties where they would buy a keg of beer for every employee, and then fire the employees who drank too much.
"That was just one example of how game companies treated their workers in those days. It was an industry full of stories about 60-hour work weeks, mandatory overtime, and projects that were "crunching" (working around the clock) for months at a time. These conditions might sound familiar if you've been following the recent #metoo movement in Hollywood; it turns out game developers have been dealing with similar issues for decades.
"I'm not saying that my programming caused all these problems, but I do think it played a role. If you look at EA's financials from 1990 to 1997, there is a clear correlation between my code and their profits: The better my code ran on people's computers, the more money EA made."
"In 1997, I left EA to start my own company. It was a risky move, but I had an idea for a new kind of game that I thought would change the industry. My team and I spent four years building this game, which we called "Deus Ex."
"When it finally came out in 2000, reviewers loved it. Some even said it was one of the best games ever made. But despite all the critical acclaim, Deus Ex didn't sell well. In fact, it was such a commercial failure that my company went bankrupt shortly after its release.
"I learned two important lessons from this experience: First, critics don't always know what they're talking about; and second, making art is hard."
Novoa Media:

The P90x workout program has absolutely ANNIHILATED obesity in America, and in only 3 months, my love handles are shrinking. People have lost 30+ lbs on this program, and it seems easy enough. So in my opinion, they know what they're doing.
I think these two videos can even be combined because I think it's great to stretch both sides of your body at the same time.
I started my "trainer" workouts on Sunday. They kicked my ASS. It seems SO HARD. I also think I've stumbled upon a pain of sitting in this chair for an hour a day while I'm watching my children. I don't know if it's the chair or this pregnancy, but my hips hurt so much. I'm almost 10 weeks, and I'm hoping that they'll stop hurting soon. I need to make this pregnancy a LITTLE easier on myself. I have a lot to do, and it's just not going to be easy for me to do it if I'm in pain all the time.
I'm hoping that I can get my body to relax and stop hurting. I think it's going to take some time. I've been doing a lot of stretching and I think that it's helping. I'm also going to try to get my husband to give me a massage. I think that would help a lot. I think that if I can get my body to relax, I'll be able to get through this pregnancy a lot easier. I'm hoping that I can find some relief soon.

Look at me. Look at me. I am the captain now. I am the captain of the Washington Capitals. I am the captain of the Washington Capitals. I am the captain.
Are you watching? Are you watching? Are you watching? Did you see what I did there? You like what I did there? Can we stay here all night? You don't even know.
Did you know about the new captain in town? Yeah, didn’t know. Everybody was in the dark.
I can’t be the captain. I’m not really good at it.
Do you see that sign over the locker room door? It says, "Captain Ovechkin." I didn't even know that existed. Who do they think they are? What is that sign even about? Captain Ovechkin? Is that their term for me? It is my term for me. I've been the captain for years now, but this is my time. I'm so excited.
I'm also scared. All the pressure is on me now. I feel like I have to be the best captain ever. And you know what? That's a lot of pressure.
But I’m up for the challenge. Bring it on, world. I am the captain now.
And I’m not going anywhere.

"You see that game over there?" Meyers asked.
I followed his gaze to a game in the corner. It was an old-school, 8-bit game that I used to play when I was a kid.
"That's The Legend of Zelda. It's my favorite game of all time," Meyers said.
"I don't know how you can even call that a game," I said. "It's so old."
"It's a classic," Meyers said. "Come on, let's play."
I put down my beer and followed him to the game. We each put in a quarter and started to play. I was terrible, but Meyers was amazing. He beat the first level in no time.
"How are you so good at this?" I asked.
"I don't know," Meyers said. "I just am."
We played a few more rounds, and then I started to feel weird. I felt like I was floating outside of my body. I looked down and saw my body still sitting at the game, but I was above it, watching myself.
"Meyers," I said, "I think I'm hallucinating."
"What?" Meyers said. He looked at me, and then he started to laugh. "Dude, you're not hallucinating. You're just drunk."
"No, I'm serious," I said. "I think I'm seeing things."
"Like what?" Meyers said.
"Like my dad," I said. "He's a police officer, and he's coming towards us."
Meyers looked at me, and then he looked around the bar. "Dude, your dad is not here," he said. "You're just seeing things."
I shook my head. "No, I'm serious. He's right there."
I pointed, and sure enough, my dad was there. He was walking towards us, and he didn't look happy.
"Meyers, we have to go," I said.
"Go where?" Meyers said.
"Anywhere," I said. "Just go."
I grabbed Meyers by the arm and pulled him towards the door. We pushed our way through the crowd and ran outside. I looked back, and sure enough, my dad was right behind us.
"Meyers, run!" I said.
We took off down the street, running as fast as we could. My dad was right behind us, yelling at us to stop. We ran for a few blocks until we finally lost him.
"What the hell was that?" Meyers said when we stopped to catch our breath. "Why were you running from your own dad?"
"I don't know," I said. "I just had this feeling that he wasn't really my dad."

Final notes: most of these expanded well, except for the puppy one, that did nothing

Common Diet And Nutrition Myths Debunked
Every fall, the publishing industry begins a new cycle of hitting bookstore shelves with diet books, just in time to help assuage winter holiday guilt and prepare for New Year’s resolutions. At the same time, TV stations are in the throes of sweeps periods and launching a new season. You know this phenomenon is in full swing when you start hearing the local news and talk show pitches: “You can lose 10 pounds in 1 week and eat whatever you want!” or “A common ingredient in your kitchen that will burn off fat without exercise! Tune in at 11 to see what it is!” Then in the next media cycle there’ll be new books and news stories telling us how these miracle cures were all a load of hooey, but there are brand-new miracle cures that really work! Here are some common nutrition myths that have gone in and out of fashion over the years—and the real truth behind the hype.

Common Diet And Nutrition Myths Debunked

Myth #1: Fat makes you fat.

People confuse dietary fat, the fat that we eat, with body fat, the adipose tissue that makes up our spare tires and thunder thighs. But while it’s true that dietary fat contains twice as many calories per gram as carbohydrates and protein, what actually makes us fat isn’t the dietary fat, it’s the calories in that fat. In fact, the calories in the carbohydrates and the calories in the protein can also make us fat. Dietary fat is very important to human health, and should make up around 25 to 30 percent of our caloric intake. For one thing, fat helps with the absorption of several vitamins that are only fat soluble, including vitamins A, D, E, and K. Fats also include heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Artery-clogging saturated fats and trans fats should be mostly avoided though, as they will raise blood cholesterol levels (see #2) and clog arteries with plaque.

In the 1980s, fats became vilified by regulatory and health agency reports as being unhealthy overall. The reasoning was that while the agencies were largely targeting saturated fats (as found in animal and dairy products), they believed it would be simpler to tell Americans to avoid all fats instead of having to explain the complexities of saturated, unsaturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, hydrogenated fats, etc. Because of these warnings, the food industries began marketing scores of low-fat or fat-free versions of products. In many cases, they would replace the missing fat with sugar or starch. So while there would be less fat, there would be almost as many—and sometimes more—calories. Consumers would eat twice as many of the new “reduced-fat” treats and wonder why they weren’t losing any weight.

As more studies have come out extolling the benefits of healthy unsaturated fats, like those found in olive oil, avocados, nuts, fish, etc., more specific recommendations have been made to increase the allowance of good dietary fats while decreasing the allowance of saturated and trans fats. In fact, many makers of cookies, breakfast cereals, and snack chips now trumpet “No Trans Fats” on their packaging. That’s great, but don’t be fooled into thinking this means there are any fewer calories. Just because the manufacturer has shown restraint in not making the food even unhealthier doesn’t mean that it’s suddenly health food. Some of these “No Trans Fats” products never had trans fats to begin with, but it’s good marketing to proclaim it. Now poison free! Not quite as toxic! Just as fattening with less artery plaque! For your health, check the labels and make sure that the kind of fat in the product is unsaturated—and make sure there aren’t too many calories for your waistline. A day’s dietary fat intake should be around 60 to 70 grams.

Myth #2: Foods high in cholesterol give you high cholesterol.

As with dietary fat, foods with high dietary cholesterol levels are believed by many to raise blood cholesterol levels. High blood cholesterol levels have been linked to heart disease and stroke, and levels should be monitored. However, our bodies need some cholesterol for normal cellular function and to assist in the production of bile, which helps the body digest fat. Unfortunately, because dietary and blood cholesterols have been given the same name, people take an attitude of “cholesterol in, cholesterol out.” In fact, studies are increasingly showing that high blood cholesterol comes from a diet high in saturated fats, while foods high in dietary cholesterol have a fairly negligible effect on high blood cholesterol. Foods high in dietary cholesterol but low in saturated fat, including eggs, shrimp, lobster, crab, clams, and other shellfish, can be safely eaten in moderation without having much effect on blood cholesterol levels. Where this misunderstanding of the causal link between dietary and blood cholesterol levels may have also come from is that many non-seafood animal products contain high levels of dietary cholesterol as well as high levels of saturated fat. So if double cheeseburgers are making regular appearances in your diet, you’re going to see a spike in your cholesterol score—but it’ll be from the saturated fat.

Myth #3: Snacking will cause weight gain.

Isn’t this what Mom always said? “No snacking or you’ll ruin your appetite!” Good! Go ahead, ruin your appetite! If you ruin your appetite, you won’t eat so much dinner. Nutrition experts have pretty much come to a consensus that you’re much better off having six small meals over the course of the day than two or three giant meals. You’ll give your body a steady source of fuel and keep your blood sugar levels and metabolism at an even keel all day long. If you think back to our caveman days, before we sat down to eat civilized meals, we probably just wandered the forests and jungles, eating when we were hungry or when the opportunity arose. Those instincts are worth listening to today. If you have a hunger pang at three o’clock in the afternoon, don’t stifle it because you know you’re having dinner at seven. You’ll be so hungry, you’ll approach dinner like a Roman orgy, eating way more than you would have if you had merely satisfied your afternoon hunger with a piece of fruit or a handful of nuts. Keep in mind though, permission to snack isn’t permission to stuff your face with Doritos, Fritos, Cheetos, or any other kind of “-tos.” There should be some sort of strategy to the snacking. Try evenly pacing out the snacks and predetermine a reasonable portion size of a healthy food, so you’re not just eating handfuls of something out of a bag.

Myth #4: If you exercise enough, you can eat whatever you want.

How many times have you heard your horrible friends who never gain weight say, “Oh, I’ll just run it off” to justify whatever sinful treat would give you a third buttock if you ate it? It’s impossible to keep a fit, healthy figure without both a healthy diet and exercise. It’s all right to indulge in the occasional pig-out sometimes. In fact, it’s good to reassure your body that there’s no need to go into starvation mode from time to time. But if you eat that slice of blackout cake, you’re looking at a 2-hour run just to burn it off, let alone what came before it. Losing weight and maintaining weight is a simple equation: if you burn off more calories than you take in, you will lose weight. Some lucky stiffs have a higher resting metabolism and burn off more calories naturally, but what probably helps your friend burn off the cake faster is that they have more muscle on their body, and, even at rest, muscles burn more calories. So while you can never eat whatever you want and stay thin, you’ll be able to indulge in a pig-out every once in a while if you can keep your body muscular and lean. And for those times, you might consider trying exercise designed to burn more calories than walking or running, like P90X, which will help you maximize the calories you burn in the time you spend exercising.

Myth #5: Drinking lots of water flushes out fat.

Drinking plenty of water is vital for weight loss. If you’re dehydrated, your energy and exercise will suffer. Also, many times we confuse thirst for hunger, so it’s always worth trying a glass of H2O before we hit the fridge. Drinking water can even give your metabolism a slight boost. What it doesn’t do is flush fat from your system. Any excess water that your body doesn’t need for proper hydration and functioning will simply get peed out, and, sadly, it won’t be taking any fat with it. You should definitely make sure you drink enough water, but don’t go overboard thinking you can chug away your love handles. If you drink too much water at any one time, it could even result in hyponatremia, or water intoxication. However, adult kidneys can process 15 liters of water a day, so drinking too much water day to day is unlikely. (It’s more likely if you’re involved in extreme Ironman-type athletic activities where over- and under-hydration are real possibilities.) Keep a water bottle handy and drink when you’re thirsty, but if you really think you can flush away your beer gut, you might be drinking a bit too much of something else.

Myth #6: Multigrain bread is better than white bread.

While whole-grain bread is better than white bread, multigrain bread is only better if the grains are whole grains, which isn’t always the case. With the bread industry, it’s really important to check the ingredient list carefully. For example, “wheat bread” is just white bread with molasses added for color. So, if anything, it’s worse for you than white bread. Unless it says “whole-wheat” bread, you’re not getting the added fiber and nutrients that come with using whole grains as ingredients. Many multigrain breads are just processed-flour breads upon which manufacturers sprinkled a couple of sunflower and sesame seeds. Hey, that’s two grains, right? That makes it multigrain! So even if the headline on the packaging says “whole-grain,” double-check the ingredient list to make sure all the grains, or at least the tmain ones, are whole. Similarly, many breakfast cereals have switched to whole-grain flour, but if the cereal still contains more sugar than a candy bar, it’s not going to move the needle much toward better health. Try to find whole-grain brands with minimal or no sweetening. If you need to, you can always add your own sugar, and at least control the amount you consume.

Myth #7: Sugar causes diabetes.

Many people falsely assume that because diabetics have to watch their sugar and carbohydrate intake that sugar causes diabetes. But if you don’t have diabetes, sugar won’t cause you to get it. The main risk factors for type 2 diabetes are being overweight and being inactive. As with fat and cholesterol, blood sugar and dietary sugar are often confused. If you eat sugar, you won’t necessarily get diabetes, but sugar is highly caloric and, as part of a high-calorie diet, can be a contributing factor to obesity, which does have a causal link to type 2 diabetes. This isn’t to say that it’s okay to eat lots of sugar, but it’s good to be aware that if you have a high-calorie diet, you are still just as much at risk for diabetes, even if that high-calorie diet doesn’t include a lot of sugar. As with most dietary health issues, it’s mainly about the calories.

Myth #8: Grapefruit burns fat.

Anyone who remembers the heydays of the Hollywood or Beverly Hills diets knows that they were good times to invest in grapefruit futures (as well as other “miracle” fruits and vegetables). The theory of those and similar diets was that grapefruit had a secret enzyme that would make body fat disappear. Grapefruit is a very healthy citrus fruit and worth eating as part of a varied diet. It has tons of vitamin C and can help fight arterial plaque buildup, and maybe even certain kinds of cancers. But grapefruit can’t burn fat. Cabbage soup can’t burn fat. Celery can’t burn fat. In fact, no food can. Some foods can temporarily increase your metabolism to assist your exercise efforts in fat loss, but the only way to truly burn fat is through exercise. And, if any fad diet revolves around a secret fat-burning ingredient, that should be a red flag that the diet isn’t nutritionally sound. Not to sound like a broken record, but the only way to effectively lose weight is to eat fewer calories and burn off more calories through exercise. Healthy metabolism-boosting foods can help, but they can’t do it alone.

Myth #9: Light olive oil has fewer calories than olive oil.

If you read the labels of various olive oils, you’ll notice that light olive oil has pretty much the same amount of calories as any other kind of olive oil. The difference is in the flavor. Light or extra-light olive oil has been heavily processed to remove the strong flavor of olive oil and make it lighter in color. It may even have been combined with other vegetable oils to achieve a milder taste and color. It still has just as much fat and calories as extra-virgin olive oil, but not nearly as many nutritional benefits, including vitamin E and polyphenols. Unlike extra-virgin olive oil, light olive oil is an unregulated product, so you don’t know what you’re getting.

2022.06.21 04:27 basicinsomniac Best DVDs or Online Lessons?

Hi all,
I’ve been playing off and on for nearly 15 years. At various points, I’ve been able to play fast but messy without an understanding of the notes I was mashing together, or precise but afraid to take risks with a slightly better understanding of theory.
I’ve tried in-person lessons, online lessons, tab books, but I always fail to stick with it.
I’ve had good success with making fitness a routine with online video programs, namely P90x, and I’m hoping to do the same with my guitar playing!
I’m looking for videos that have every day planned with drills, theory, etc. I think I’d benefit from playing along with an instructor. hopefully as I build momentum, I can branch off, advance, or return to in person lessons.
Any recommendations on programs set up like this?

2022.05.04 06:04 scottydoesntgrow First time at 30 days.. How I got here..

In the last 30 days...
TLDR - Im 39 years old I dont have many failures but starting this late is one of them. Im doing it, I am not perfect but it's happening. Get rid of ALL triggers and use blockers, have a purpose, get hobbies, exercise, and be social. Read (or audio) Books. You can't sit at home and just "monk" this habit if you're locked in and isolated, fill your time with things, hobbies and knowledge. preferably "things" that benefit you at the same time audiobooks that teach, habits that occupy your mind and or body. Dont just do this for yourself, do it for those people that see good in you that you dont wanna disappoint. Talk about it if you can, to as many trusted people as you can, without making it their problem own it, and beat it.
BENEFITS: Well I have accomplished a lot I've been more motivated to fill my "idle time", Taking classes, and Work relationships have improved. Women definitely act differently around me and I feel like the extra testosterone has made me hold more of an "alpha type" role when I enter the room. Im not ugly, but I have never been the type to take initiative when Im attracted to someone, I feel like that's changing. Exercising daily, taking better care of myself. A part of my benefits have come from reading (audio booking?) and gaining knowledge I've become a better person and more well-rounded with help of the knowledge gained from these books and the focus I've gained from nofap.
WHY I DO IT: What stuck was convincing myself I wasn't doing it for myself, im doing it for those relationships I squandered and regret, those amazing women that I only gave half (or less) of my mental focus. I feel like I hurt them, not in a way I feel guilty about it now, more in a way of a lost chance to make a worthwhile chapter in my life. Also imagining my family finding me one day in a precarious situation (dead) or seeing my shame come out somehow, but acknowledging this and staying positive is a big part. I keep these thoughts with me as a motivation to do better.
BEGINNING: When I started my journey I stacked a few more NEW good habits on with it, 30days of no PMO, 30 days of exercise, 30 days of no energy drinks, and this month I made it a point to socialize at least once a week (outside of work I mean). One BAD habit which I feel doesnt help is using Cannabis DAILY, im not going to go into the details of why it doesnt work, I feel like it's a good short-term help for boredom, but eventually, you have to channel that boredom into something useful. I quit using Canna TODAY, it will only slow down my progress and stifle my growth, 90 days no Canna starts today.
MAKING A PURPOSE: I began taking certification classes on Coursera.com for $50 bucks a month to take as many as you want. Certifications are sharable on linked in and the teaching method is palatable, with short under ten-minute videos and short recap quizzes. I have accomplished an IT Tech Support Course and Im going into a 3D Printing Design for manufacturing next.
(optional) I microdose mushrooms I started at the beginning of my NoFap journey and it seems to help create a buffer or safety net, so if I do experience a damaging thought or memory im not overtaken by it, im able to recognize and move on (books I read on mindfulness helped also see below). Im not clinically depressed, if anything they've also motivated me to get stuff done in the same way the positives of NoFap do.
EXERCISE: I still haven't been to an actual gym... But i have also done a 30-day streak of PiYo (same company as p90x) More yoga than cardio. Feels great! no equipment is required (you can start today) and does also help with any urges...
TRIGGERS: A BIG HELP was, I got rid of ANY triggers, threw away my jo-sleeve, deleted any program that gave me access to VR Porn on my oculus, and threw away my gear VR, blocked all porn from everything, Including my phone (thanks whoever recommended bulldog blocker). Took extra steps and unfollowed any "IG model" or "check out my OF" types. It took a few attempts as I would still find ways to get to it, but did not indulge. I was able to recognize the thought and take action before I reacted.
SOCIAL: Ive been stopping in at the bar after work on the weekends, I have a full-time job and get off at midnight usually so just for a drink or two, not enough to make me drunk and not enough to make me desperate. Just enough to feel normal again since covid had me couped up. I feel like this social exercise has helped also.. feeling balanced with fun things and hobbies have been awesome.
HOBBIES: I bought a 3D Printer and have been filling my time with this new hobby. Printing things almost non-stop has opened my mind to possibilities of what I can print and thinking about that and ideas when my mind wanders.
BOOKS: Ive also listened to a couple of audio books that helped fill boredom and help with urges. Mindfulness in Plain English helped with urges a lot, being able to recognize and "capture" an "invasive" thought is now like having a built-in firewall in my brain that stops thoughts. I dont ignore the thoughts I recognize when they come in, acknowledge that they will be gone soon enough, and either I start counting my breaths till I forget the thought or I do something to distract myself.
Also, No More Mr. Nice Guy - Dr. Robert Glover had a nice big impact and enforces 90-day NoFap and healthy masturbation down the line.
Atomic Habits, Is a great book for making the most out of this and stacking good habits on while you ride the wave to 90 (and beyond)
Other helpful books: 12 Rules for Life, Ikigai, Talking to Strangers, Extreme Ownership
And just for fun, The Rational Optimist, Starship Troopers, Ready Player One, Sapiens, The Parasitic Mind.
Update: successful: A friend of mine was going through a breakup and took 30 days off also, she wasn't doing it for the same reasons but she had gone the same amount of time without P or O, so when she found out I was almost at 30 she decided to push herself also. On day 30 we celebrated *wink wink. It was the best 30 seconds of my life lol... Before NoFap I was dealing with having a hard time getting a O with my partner. This time I was fully confident it was coming, also not ashamed of how fast it was coming and shes was ecstatic about it. It was real, i was focused on her and only her, and we were there 100 percent engaged in each other.. As short as it was we both left completely satisfied. She became enlightened about the benefits of abstaining from PMO. Im happy, and excited to keep this going and make it a permanent part of my life. SUCCESS.

2022.04.13 07:47 hanwcssi Motivation

Edit: Wow reddit gold? Thanks! No idea what to do with it or whats the deal but many thanks!
Edit2: Someone asked what I meant by "much more when it comes to how to turn nonzero days into hugely nonzero days". The long and short of it is a simple truth, but it's tough to TOTALLY UNDERSTAND AND PRACTICE. It's this: you become what you think. This doesnt mean if I think of a tree, I'll be oakin' it by august. It means that the WAY you think, the THINGS you think of, and the IDEAS YOU HOLD IN YOUR MIND defines the sum total that is you. You procrastinate all the time and got fear and worry goin on for something? You are becoming a procrastinator. You keep thinking about how much you want to run that 5 k race in the spring and finish a champion? Are ya keeping it in mind all the time? Is it something that is defining your ACTIONS and influencing you DECISIONS? If it is, then you're becoming the champion you're dreaming about. Dreaming about it makes it. Think and it shall be. But do not forget that action is thought's son. Thoughts without actions are nothing. Have faith in whatever it is you've steeled your mind to. Have faith and follow through with action.
Ok, Ryan that's a bunch of nice words n shit, but how does that help me turn slightly nonzero days into hugely nonzero days. Do you believe all these words you just read? Does it makes sense to you that you BECOME WHAT YOU THINK OF? Ask yourself: What do I think of? When you get home and walk in the door. (how quickly did you turn that laptop on? Did turning it on make you closer to your dreams? What would?) At the bus stop. Lunch break. What direction are you focusing your intentions on? If you're like I was a few years ago, the answer was either No direction, or whatever caught my eye at the moment. But no stress, forgive yourself. You know the truth now. And knowing the truth means you can watch your habits, read books on how you think and act, and finally start changing your behaviour. Heres an example: Feeling like bunk cause you had zero days or barely nonzero days? THINK ABOUT WHAT YOURE DOING. and change just a little bit more. in whatever positive direction you are choosing to go.

2022.02.23 21:40 kantinalee Business Opportunity

Hi I'm Kantina Lee.
I only need about ten minutes of your time. I am a coach. I don't really look like one, but I am Just beginning my journey. No matter what Stage or physical condition you are in you can do this too. And here's how. You are at the start of a choice. To move or not. To go all in or be left behind. You need to know yourself and your story. Once that's done. You choose to invest in yourself. And by acting you show that you believe in yourself. Know your what. To create a better future. Know your why. Find a business opportunity to be excited about, believe in and be passionate and honest about. An opportunity that has worked for others. It’s a proven billion-dollar business you can start and be the C.E.O. of. It's your business.
I'm a mother of three, grandmother of two, and I'll be 50 this year. I found myself overweight, depressed, at rock bottom, just existing, bad health, and pre-diabetic. I am part of a great community of people with lots of growth opportunities, with my own business. I may not be where I want to be yet, but I will be. I want to help others as I help myself to create a life we've dreamed about, never had, one we desire, dream about, and work to create for ourselves. The knowledge is provided for you and more. You can learn as you earn.
Now to talk about what coaching is and what it's not. It's given me so much already as a person. It's not a get-rich-quick scheme. To make anything worth value, it takes time. I've come out of my shell. I'm getting better everyday. I have a community of great people to motivate, encourage, and be there for me. I'm not alone. I can create my life, my freedom, and my future. It's in my hands. It's a business where others have retired from their jobs to work at home. You can do this, and go as far as you want.
The job is to inspire, motivate, grow, and share that to the world. I'm not there yet, that ever changing there in my life. Where I want to be. This business has proven that people can succeed as they improve, each step, each way, and so many areas that they weren't aware of before. I want to Pivot my life towards my goals for my business and life in the right direction. This is it for me and maybe for you. You start with me and the other coaches in many different levels of success to help you create your business.
I basically get up early, before my son. Drink some water. Drink my pre-workout. Than I do my work out with more water. I drink post workout. Then I have a nutritional smoothie or shake. These are part of the business, some of our products, part of the basic program. To take away any of the guesswork. The plan is there for you. You post about your products and your life. Doing what makes you feel better, working on you. Also do some personal development for 10 or 20 minutes everyday by reading, listening to a podcast, audio book, or watching informative videos to exercise your mind. Whatever works for you. I'm still learning and growing. Not great at videos yet, as you can tell. To create challenge group or use the one provided for you. Then to check in and hold people accountable, just as you have for yourself as a coach. Being a coach with your own business you are more likely to do the work.
You get access to the ideas, ways, and options to run your business your way and are provided the proven methods that have worked for others. You grow your business by helping others do the same. As I am doing right now. I'll be there for you all the way. If you put in the work, you'll succeed. I want a great team to learn from and grow with and to celebrate successes and business and life watch you succeed even Beyond My Success and then you can watch your coaches succeed we have it successful team to follow grow with and learn from a number one successful team that I am so proud to be a part of new starting from scratch it's there for you to help you and be there for you and your business and life as you create it
okay let's talk costs, answers to questions. With this registration opens for you to Join me. Are you ready to change your life? Is it worth investing in yourself? I haven't succeeded as much as I plan to yet, but I know the potential is there. I'm getting out of my comfortable safe space, out of my own head, and out of my own way, by believing in myself and my business. Do all the things. No standing around in person selling, cold calling, or stocking products. What you do is believe in the company, quality products, and do the work on you and your business.
You start by ordering your own program as a coach. When starting you subscribe to products, to whitch you can unsubscribe at anytime. Quickly and easily. You et a 30 day money back guarantee. Even if you've gone through all the products. It's $15.95 a month after that. Which is like $17 a month taxes and fees. Just to cover full transparency and honesty.
You sign up for the workout program that you choose to start. No start-up costs, they are waived by starting the program bundle you choose. The program you want from a library of thousands of workouts like 21 day fix, Body Beast, insanity, P90X, and so many more. A totally legit company backing you and providing programs, products, workout programs with real trainers, where you can work out anywhere, recorded or live.
Most Programs start about $160 and then $10 or $20 for taxes and fees. Okay, well more like $10 or so, but I got two day shipping option that was $10 more. I spill all the tea. Ask me. There are some times sales and discounts. Its total value for your money.
You just have to start and take that first step. The monthly fee that covers your website, also comes with a command center to keep you up-to-date on your team as you add to it. Get access to information about social media and so much more. Also you get 25% off your purchase of products from nutrition, equipment, to apparel. The perks and bonuses are gifts, events, trips. But this is about so much more than just making money or the bonuses. It is about changing lives and the way you'll feel doing so.
This is an unlimited income potential. You would have the option quit any or all programs at any time. It's a billion dollar company and a real opportunity. You will get 20 to 30% commission for all programs, renewals, and purchases. That's just at the beginning.
It's by believing in yourself. If you don't have that belief in yourself, it's time that you do. I believe in you.
It's by investing in you and your future. Thank you for getting this far. Registration is open. Fill out the form

2021.12.04 04:00 Just1ceForGreed0 Non Zero Days

Got this from GetDisciplined and it’s been very helpful not just to me a but to a lot of people.
I’m sharing this here in case it might help even just one person on this sub.

2021.10.03 20:10 Naive-Register7964 M35 5’6 OMAD SW:170/CW:143 How do I gain muscle on OMAD?

First off, the IF community has been awesome! Close, supportive, and consistent! I found fasting through a whim, looking at books on Amazon and Dr. Fung’s obesity code popped up, took a leap, and long story short, I’ve never seen any weight loss regimen be so effective in weight loss! Crazy results truly.
Anyways, I feel like I’ve lost enough weight and want to add muscle back in. I personally find OMAD easy to do in its simplicity but I’m flexible about it and will sometimes do 18:6 on weekends. Im struggling to keep my macros and calories up (average around 1400-1600) in the OMAD window and so I’m considering going down to 18:6 because it was a lot easier to eat more but would love any insight?
Edit: I do moderate HIIT(P90x) 3x/wk and work as a nurse at a veterinary hospital.
Edit again: ah, forget to mention I’ve been Keto as well and been doing both for about 8 weeks

2021.08.17 13:24 randomusicjunkie Today, I stop smoking. [Message to myself]

I am 25 years old. I have been smoking for 7 years, initially a few cigarettes in the first year, then half a pack ever since. I have tried to stop many times using different tricks - tapes and cold turkey. My longest break without cigarettes was 2 weeks this May when I started using the tapes.
Smoking has taken away too much from me:
  1. I could no longer do sports the way I used to. I'm an avid runner and I do a P90X training program, however, I could no longer finish my workout without taking multiple breaks. Cigarettes have cut back my lung capacity. I stop to be able to train again.
  2. I gained a sleep disorder called sleep apnea due to cigarettes. I could no longer get a good night's rest, cigarettes have caused my sleep apnea. I am letting go of smoking to revert my body back to its healthy state.
  3. I drank too much coffee. I started drinking more and more coffee as I smoked more and more and I became caffeine-addicted. At night I suffered from not being able to fall asleep, not being able to wake up. I am stopping this vicious circle and reducing my caffeine intake. I had enough of artificially increasing the stress hormones in my body to be awake. I let go of cigarettes to build a healthy balance and calmer self.
  4. I built a house of lies. I got so reliant on cigarettes that I started thinking smoking is what solves my problems. Issues at work? I went for a smoke and everything seemed better. Panic attack? I started smoking. Girlfriend issues? Smoking. I let go of cigarettes because I am ready to face my issues as they arise.
  5. I kept doubting myself. I could no longer believe in myself. What kind of a person I am, at the age of 25 I could not even stop smoking, I kept failing. I realized I became very negative when thinking about myself. It reduced my self-confidence and self-esteem. I let go of cigarettes to prove myself that I am not a failure but a success. I never gave up on stopping smoking, I am ready to push through this wall no matter what.
  6. I got panic attacks. I can't believe what I've become. I'm unstable mentally, seriously dependent on smoking and coffee. I used to not go out because I was afraid of having a panic attack outside. I had backup cigarettes in my backpack for when it happens. Cigarettes were my false medication. I thought I was weak without them. I am letting go of cigarettes because I realized I can fight for my own. I'm strong.
  7. I lost a ton of my energy. The moment I wake up, my whole mental state was about, when to smoke, where can I smoke, when can I smoke. Having these urges and needs - I can't believe how much effort and energy was taken away from me. It's like darkness in your mind, a closed room full of smoke where you can barely breathe. I let go of cigarettes to gain back my good mood and energy.
In the past 2 weeks, in preparation for August 17, I have started to set up a schedule in my calendar. I believe stopping smoking is life-changing and I wanted to change for the better.
I set up an action plan for each day that includes:
  1. Running/cycling/walking outside, something in nature! :)
  2. Drinking lots and lots of water, I replaced coffee with Mate tea and Green tea, if I drink coffee I don't drink Mate tea (it has caffeine) and the max coffee I drink is 2 cups but never after 4 PM! :)
  3. I started doing P90X again an intense workout that really pushes you to the edge. I feel so much stronger and so much more fit already! :)
  4. I started cooking and washing the dishes every day. I feel useful, clean, and tidy on the outside as well! :)
  5. I started studying about what interests me for an hour each day after work. I picked up books on various topics; health/vegan foods and programming, math, and other things I used to not be good at! :)
  6. I switched to a less stressful job. I feel a lot calmer, a lot more balanced and I feel like a success! :)
  7. I started making music. I bought a piano and I started recording some Lo-Fi tunes! :)
I got used to my new schedule. I am building a healthy "mind + body + soul".
When I was a kid, my grandfather was smoking and I always asked him, "Papa, why can't you just stop? You just don't smoke anymore and that's how you stop, you know papa? I can help, give me the cigarette and I will throw it out for you!". He took the cigarette out of my hands and smoked another one and a few years later he passed away. I was a very little kid at the time and I remember it clearly. That little kid that I used to be, deserves to have "himself".
Today is the day. Tuesday, August 17, 2021
PS: I will come back and read this post each day for the upcoming months.

2021.08.06 15:58 larplabs Well I finished day 37 and that's the end of 75 hard for me

I just wanted to do a quick write up of what I learned and gained from doing the last 37 days of 75 hard.

My largest takeaway was probably how much I was settling.

Workouts: Most days I did 1 hard workout and 1 recovery workout. The hard workout would either be crossfit, or running. When I went on vacation out of town I took some bowflex weights with me and did some p90x as well. For the recovery workout it was a low intensity stationary bike workout, walk, or recovery yoga.
My largest win here was feeling better than ever after being out of town for a week when I came back to the gym. Usually I feel terrible the first week back after eating terribly (which I didnt do this vacation) and not working out at all. It was a huge eye opener to how much I was giving up. The 45 minute runs and stationary bikes really showed me how much I had lost my longer form endurance over the last few years as well. I hope to continue these moving forward.

Diet: My diet was basically meat, veggies, and beans. Pretty clean and basically slow carb. I've never stuck with a diet this long before and I was shocked with how easy it was to stick with after the brutal first week. A lot of my cravings have gone down and I feel like I have a much healthier relationship with food overall.

Reading: I read all of how to win friends and influence people and I started the Dale Carnegie how to stop worrying book. I really enjoy reading and it's a habit that that I wish I had not fallen off of over the years.

Progress pictures: Not much to see across my 38 progress pictures, but my wife says she can tell a difference. My goal was to actually gain some weight on this challenge while losing some fat, and I feel like I have leaned out some.

Mental toughness/discipline: I feel like I had a lot of gains here. Before 75hard I probably made it to the gym 3-4 times a week, and many weeks I probably only made it twice. I didnt prioritize any workouts on a regular basis, and I would often hit snooze instead of rolling out of bed at 5:30 to get the workout in before work. 75hard ended all of that for me and I'm really thankful for that. I remember one night I wanted to quit just because it all felt too hard, but I got out of bed anyway and went for a run and honestly had some of my best mile splits in a while.

Why I'm quitting: Cause I'm a whimp!

It's honestly probably partly I'm a whimp and my personal reason is the time to value I'm getting on the second workout. I fit my first workout pretty hard and my second workout is generally a 45 minute walk that's basically just checking a box. That 45 minutes is creeping into my sleeping time for recovery, and or taking time away from my wife and kids. If I was actually accomplishing a goal with that second workout that might be fine, but I'm basically just taking time from them so I can walk in circles around the neighborhood for no real fitness gain. I'm hoping to start 75soft or whatever you might want to call it Monday. 75hard minus the second workout to I keep some good habits in place that worked for me.
