6 Tips for writing your Grad School Admissions Essay

2024.05.17 03:57 Holiday_Effort8329 6 Tips for writing your Grad School Admissions Essay

Hope they help!
1) You don’t have to write the personal statement; you get to.
Before you even sit down to write your essay, it’s important to have the right attitude.
Far too many students look at their medical school essay as an assignment rather than an opportunity. However, if the field you're pursuing is truly your passion, then why not be excited at the chance to talk about your journey? After all, it is always a privilege to share our story with others. The more freedom and enthusiasm you have while sharing yours, the better the final product will be, which brings me to the next point:
2) Stop writing your personal statement and start playing with it.
One of the main reasons applicants get stuck with the personal statement is because they approach it like they’re performing open heart surgery. “But it’s graduate school!” Yes, yes, I know, and I promise, there will be a time and place for polishing your masterpiece. However, in the beginning, you shouldn’t worry about writing a perfect essay, but rather, discovering a compelling story and, most importantly, an authentic and original way of telling it. And the only way to do that is to get your mind out of the classroom and into a playground—where all the magic happens.
Having spent nearly a decade as a personal statement coach, I can tell you that the most profound insights always come from playful tinkering. One thing I recommend, in this regard, is to explore outside the realms of your field—especially for your opening paragraph, as you never want to start your essay on a generic foot. Understand that the application pool is filled with the same old stories floating around; one of the best ways to stand out is by organically connecting an unrelated topic or life experience to your career path.
3) Cut to the chase!
It doesn’t matter how creative or beautifully written your essay is, if it doesn’t get to the topic of the career field and your interest in it by the second paragraph, then it's a dud. Remember, your #1 job is to answer the question of why you want to become a physician, lawyer, dentist... etc. Do not try to impress the reader with your exceptional writing skills either. In fact, try not to think of it as “writing” at all; more like speaking. The personal statement is essentially your first interview, so be clear, concise, and to the point. Remember, in a pile of dense essays, an easy-to-digest story goes a long way—remember, anytime you make the admissions officer’s job easier, it counts in your favor.
4) Never let your reader come to their own conclusion.
What’s wrong with the sentence below?
I spent two weeks working at Dr. Taylor’s office, observing a vast array of procedures, interacting with patients, and learning the ins and outs of a pediatric clinic.
Well, if I’m the admissions officer, the first thing I’m asking myself is: why did this student work for only two weeks? Did they get fired or something?
Whether there’s a perfectly good explanation at hand or you really did get fired, it’s imperative that you provide an answer that eliminates any possible negative assumptions your reader may have. Every sentence you write needs to be glossed over with this potential issue in mind; after all, the last thing you want to do is let your reader fill in your story for you.
5) Find your angle.
At the core of every successful personal statement is an authentic and original perspective. For instance, take medical school. There are a lot of students who write about their own health struggles; however, even with a generic topic like this, you can still stand out by discussing it from a unique angle that translate into medicine, your purpose, life… etc. Regardless of what your story is, your perspective will always be your greatest edge, because while some of us may have similar experiences, there will never be two people who see the world exactly the same. Use this beautiful fact to your advantage.
6) Start and end on a personal note.
Whether it’s an admissions essay or a speech, the only way to reach someone's heart is to speak from yours. By starting and ending on a personal note, you not only wrap your personal statement in a satisfying bow but also add a level of depth and meaning that will leave a lasting impression on whoever is reading your essay. Be mindful of not only your words but the emotions each phrase conveys. The best thing you can do, especially in the conclusion, is to evoke a powerful feeling in your reader. Why? Because, as the late Maya Angelou famously said, a person will never forget how you made them feel.

2024.05.14 15:08 LittleTovo Where can I get error coins evaluated in person?

I tried looking up coin places near by but when I call they actually seem a little annoyed with getting calls about error coins as they only deal with regular coins.
I believe I might have a 2022 Maya Angelou error coin but I am not sure and I don't think my phone can take a good enough picture to be evaluated online.

2024.05.14 02:46 Holiday_Effort8329 4 Key Tips for Writing the College Essay (from a writer)

Hi everyone! Thought I'd share my 4 tips for students writing their college essays this year. Hope they help!
1) Stop writing your college essay and start playing with it.
One of the main reasons students struggle with their personal statement is because it involves an approach counterintuitive to what schools and society teach. There's no formula to follow, no test to pass; just a story to tell, and that can be quite daunting for some. That is why, when it comes to the college essay, it's imperative to get your mind out of the classroom and into a playground—where all the magic happens.
Start by forgetting what colleges "want" to hear, and focus instead on what you want to say. Remember, this is the one part of your application where you aren't a grade, score, or checkmark but a human being. So act like one! Don't treat the college essay as an assignment you have to do but rather as an experience you get to have. After all, it's a privilege to have the opportunity to share our story with others. The more freedom and joy you have while sharing yours, the better the finished product will be. Whether it's da Vinci's Mona Lisa or Michael Jordan's legendary basketball career, every great masterpiece begins with a person simply having fun.
2) If you want to find treasure, dig.
If there's anything I've learned from years of helping countless students write their college essays, it's that every single person on earth has a story worth telling. No matter how plain or boring you think your life may be, I promise that there is a gem inside you waiting to be unearthed. However, like all treasure, you have to dig for it, so embrace the mess and stay patient. You'll see that as soon as you combine curiosity with persistence, all the right doors will begin to open.
On that note, I highly recommend some form of journaling. Having a safe, non-judgmental place to let out your thoughts and emotions is essential, as expression and discovery always go hand-in-hand. In general, you should take the time to get to know yourself a little better; after all, that's who you are writing about.
3) It's ALL in the presentation.
You've probably been warned to avoid sob stories and cliches, but what ultimately matters more than the subject matter is the context in which you use it. Contrary to popular belief, there is not a single "generic" topic that is off-limits so long as you talk about it in a non-generic way. In other words, it's not so much about what you say but how you say it. Yes, the number of themes available to you is ultimately limited, but the ways of packaging them are endless.
4) The college essay isn't about impressing your readers; it's about connecting with them.
How do you connect with an audience? First and foremost, you let go of the need for their approval—an irony, I know, considering your entire goal is to get accepted into college. However, think of any piece of music that speaks to your soul. Chances are the artist behind the song doesn't even know who you are, let alone wrote a tune for you. Yet, somehow, hearing that song makes you relate to them in a profound way.Whether it's art or a personal statement, the only way to reach someone's heart is to speak from yours.
Why? Because no matter our differences, we are fundamentally all the same. You will never know who is reading your college essay, but I promise that so long as they are human, they are just like you. So before you aim for a good college essay, aim for an honest one, and never be afraid to let your essence shine. That is how you evoke a powerful and authentic feeling in your reader, and as the late Maya Angelou famously said, a person will never forget how you made them feel.

2024.05.13 22:55 Efficient-Barber-773 Does race, religion, etc. affect how we laugh beyond nuclear families?

I've read the rules of this sub and think this question fits.
Tldr: do non-white non-high control communities laugh loudly together? Alone? Not just, a polite laugh. A spirited, "raucous" laugh. Bothering people, crying yourself laughing. I wasn't allowed that growing up.
I've noticed especially watching comedians particularly famous in black communities, (background I was raised Mormon and white. I have educated myself but you're always ignorant.) such as Gary Owen, Katt williams that I've been exposed to recently, the laughter is lively. Spirited. I've also noticed while watching Maya Angelou read Still I Rise that laughter is very important to the reading of the poem, both as the reader and an audience participant. Even in a reading by Nikki Minaj at an A&E event that seems quite rich and California, she and the audience knew to laugh at the right time, though a completely different level of spiritedness.
My family is pretty stringent on laughter. My father has a booming laugh but my mother and sister are always shushing him and complaining about the volume. Meanwhile, they have all inherited my grandfather's sneeze, which involves near screaming when you let the sneeze out. I don't see why throwing my back out sneezing is any worse than laughing loudly.
Angelou - https://youtu.be/qviM_GnJbOM Minaj - https://youtu.be/WDfuJIBpXPM
Why do you laugh the way you do? (Regardless of background) Is there cultural context to laughter? Was there a significant impact by Angelou's poem on black communities? I found the concept of laughter and joy as resistance to be very powerful, and I wonder if it was employed or passed down.
White people feel like, polite at shows sometimes? I personally have difficulty regulating my volume and yeah I'd appreciate it if someone lmk I was talking WAY too loud but my girlfriend and family shushes me like. All the time, just for laughing. I see this less among some of the younger audiences I watch, Stavros Halkias and Nate Jackson's crowd work, people seem to let loose a little more. Did I just grow up in a cult so I'm weird lol?

2024.05.13 17:23 SwitcherooU Maybe the strangest joke in the entire show?

You’ll find it during the Superfan cut of “Goodbye, Michael.”
Right after he tells the office that Phyllis was hot in high school, Michael turns his attention to Stanley, who seems to be doing a crossword puzzle.
Michael pulls out a slip of patter and reads the following words: “Do you hate that I am proud and brown, standing here alive, with baby oil on my Nubian thighs? - Big Mama Angelou.”
Baffling.
After some googling, he seems to be conflating the poem “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou and “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor (not the first time he’s been mistaken about that song).
Then he wants to do a crossword with Stanley, but Stanley refuses. Then they wrestle over the crossword book, and a hentai illustration falls out.
It’s a very strange sequence. For the first joke to land, the audience would have to be familiar with the Maya Angelou poem and also understand that Michael confuses “I Will Survive” with other pieces of media. So I’m not surprised it was cut.
At any rate, it has to be the strangest joke in the entire show, right? I can’t think of one that’s more obscure.
Anyway, I just wanted to share because I was so blindsided by it. I’ve seen this episode SO many times now, and to have this new bit to talk about is a lot of fun.
Thank you for reading.

2024.05.03 21:08 Wild_Seaworthiness47 Name and Shame: SquarePoint Capital (NYC)

Hey folks,
I've been unemployed for a year now and, like many of you, have been making the rounds through some ridiculous interview experiences. I wanted to share some red flags from my most recent disappointment to hopefully help others escape my fate in the future.
Red Flag #1
I started interviewing with SquarePoint in late February after being recommended by a recruiter on LinkedIn. I received a detail-redacted job description from the recruiter and was asked to complete a HackerRank quiz for the role before ever talking to a human being.
Red Flag #2
The first round interview I had was scheduled in-person in midtown, in business attire. I commuted in a downpour to the interview at 9 AM from my outerborough abode and met with someone on the team I'd be working with. During the interview, this person let me know that I was the first person to pass the technical round interview to speak with him in over a year. That's right, I was the first person to pass the HackerRank quiz in over a year. It was not a difficult quiz...
Red Flag #3
I was subsequently scheduled for three virtual interview rounds with other members of their IT team across the organization. Feedback from these folks was that I impressed them with my technical knowledge and responses and they were excited to expedite me along. The red flag from this portion, however, was that there was a third participant in each of these scheduled interviews -- a Video Conferencing unit with no audio/video on. Which means I was being watched by other people the entire time I was interviewing.
Red Flag #4
Finally came the request for interviews with management. I would be interviewing with the hiring manager for the role and another IT manager overseeing other functions at the company.
I'm not going to lie here. I made a couple of gaffes during these interviews. I accidentally called the hiring manager by her last name when thanking her for her time and leaving the meeting. I unintentionally overrepresented some experience with a certain technology when talking to the second IT manager.
The general impression from these two interviews, though, was that I had full experience in their application stack and I had experience solving many of the technical problems they were currently working on (like cloud and application transitions). I made my value clear to them and they agreed that I would be an exceptional asset on their team. They liked my personality, all of the feedback from the team was positive, they just needed some time to make an offer. Then...
Red Flag #5
A few days after my Monday interview, my recruiting contact tells me that the hiring manager would like to schedule a quick additional call with me. I'm pretty reticent to accept the call at this point because it can't be a good sign, but against my better judgment, I agree.
I take the call the following Monday and the HM seems a bit cagey. She asks me questions like "Are you ready to work?" and "You know what this role entails, right?". Yes, I applied for a support role with some engineering responsibilities and I'm a little overqualified. That's not a problem for me, though, and I let the HM know that I'm ready for work, excited to tackle some new challenges, and ready to hit the ground running. Great, end of interview.
Red Flag #6 (Yep, I'm also not sure how I let it go this far)
Another few days go by, my recruiting contact calls again letting me know that the company wants to schedule one more call with me. This time the other IT Manager wants to talk to me personally. He says that all of the feedback has been positive so far, they just want to make sure that they're putting my skills to the best use. They tell me that this other IT manager would actually rather I report to him because he has a couple open positions in an engineering role and a trade systems support role that they think would be better for my growth long-term. They asked for a call the following Monday (now 2 weeks after my 'final round interviews') with this hiring manager. The internal recruiter, external recruiter I had been working with, and IT manager all insisted that an offer was ready to go for Job #1, they just wanted to get my feedback on these other openings incase I would also be a good fit for a possible Job #2.
At this point, alarm bells are going off in my head. It sounds like a trap, but it can't possibly be a trap, right? I look through the company's website for job postings in these other areas and see related roles, but nothing that quite fits what I'm hearing on this phone call.
My naivety got the best of me. I agreed to the call and spoke with IT Manager #2 about other roles. We talked a bit more about my knowledge and experience, he reiterated that all of the feedback so far has been positive, that they are excited to move forward, he just needs a couple of days to draw up a job description for this other role and possibly put me in front of a few more team members on these engineering teams.
Which brings us to now. My recruiting contact calls me and lets me know that SquarePoint has decided to reject me after all. The initial offer for job #1 that was floated never existed and is no longer being considered. My recruiting agency goes to bat for me, but it doesn't seem to be enough. Dejected, I find myself back at Square One wondering how I could've been so stupid.
Folks, please listen to me (and Maya Angelou): trust your gut, companies aren't going to start respecting you at some point in the hiring process if there isn't respect from the start.
I should've never completed the HackerRank quiz that demonstrated zero respect for me as an applicant and everything that happened after reinforces that belief.
"When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time."

2024.04.29 10:45 chipchipchipotle is my perspective clouded…?Bf (29M) and i (30F) are out on a hike, we have been together 3 years.

Am I being overly dramatic?
So this happened 3 times within an hour.. Bf (29M) and i (30F) are out on a hike, I am more adventurous and independent. Kinda have a mindset where “rules are more like guidelines” rather than written in stone. And he is more of a worry wart.
So we come to an abandoned building, cool architecture and I want to look inside, there’s a big sign that says ‘stay out, dangerous structure’. I understand, but I get up to the porch to just peer in, not going beyond this, bf screams “can’t you read”, I get down and state why I didn’t go further and just wanted to look. Okay, I understand his concern so I brush that off. (I should say this structure seems very sturdy, other people were around and even going inside. The sign seemed more of an obligatory sign to me)
I just think if he was concerned he didn’t have to be patronizing.
Anyways we get back from the hike and there’s about 5 signs to say where to stand for the next shuttle, some people stand in the far line that says “bikes to Denver”, some people in our line that said “to Denver” some people with bikes also stand in the back of our line. So clearly there’s some confusion going on, to Bf I said “do you think the lines really matter since everyone is mixed up anyways and we are both going to same destination”, he then says, “yeah of course, can’t you see the sign”. Again this sounds patronizing to me since we both were commenting on the signs earlier since they had a fun design. This is just not how I answer people, so i find his response weird.
Anyways this is starting to bother me. Last thing, 2 buses arrive at the same time, one is nice, and the other kinda looks like the bus we came on, the worker points to the nice bus and says something like “I’d like that to be our bus”, it was labeled with the name of our current city, so i say “maybe it was our bus”, bf then says “can’t you hear, she didn’t say this was our bus”.
With each of these 3 interactions my frustration was growing. Of course I confront him and ask “why are you talking to me in this way, it’s not helpful and you are just criticizing me”, he says sorry and that he understands his mistake and that he didn’t realize how it came off. He is very nonchalant about it. Despite that day he normally is super kind in every regard, helpful, and considerate.
But I have this secret paranoia because of the maya angelou saying “when someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time”, I guess in my situation this can be interpreted either positively by his track record or negatively because I’m seeing these things that he is doing that I feel disrespected but because he’s such a good guy I then want to ignore those comments completely and let it slide. Yet what keeps popping up in my head is that if I was a stranger or if my sisters bf said things in the way he did today I’d be totally upset for them, and mad at him for talking to them that way. So if I’m looking at myself through different eyes it’s now hard for me to get past his comments. Makes me second guess who he is. Oh wow am I being dramatic..? side note: I have been sleeping terrible so I think I just need somebody with a clear mind to tell me to relax or if my concerns are valid..

2024.04.27 08:27 aaauthor54 A Drunk Prologue to a Much Longer Story

I think I do all my best writing drunk. I’m pretty sure I read something about Maya Angelou doing her best work after polishing off a bottle of wine. I wouldn’t dare compare myself to her of course. I’m certainly much more brash. Dig as much as you want you’ll be hard pressed to find a nuance or metaphor in this shit pile. I’ll probably throw in a ton of similes but only because they’re easy.
Throughout the course of this story I’m gonna be selfish. It’s my story after all. Everyone loves talking about themselves. At least I have the ability to articulate this series of semi unfortunate events in a fun and exciting sort of way.
I’m pretty drunk right now. For the sake of establishing a timeline I’m 29. I’ll be your somewhat omniscient narrator. Right now I’m supremely drunk. My ass is planted on a white couch that I’m extremely proud of. Including 5 year stain protection it was about $3,000.
Please don’t be confused though, I have two roommates. As much as I say it out loud, I’m certainly not rich. But I am proud. I look around the apartment and how a piece of me is on every single wall and I feel good. Especially about the $90 cascading frame that holds 5 photos and my 10 space watch box that has only one slot left.
Material items have always driven me. They still do. I love to acquire. But my treasure trove of memories may be what I hold most dear.
I love to decorate my apartment with pictures. There’s nothing like a snapshot. It’s one moment, frozen in time. You’re on vacation, you’re at a party, maybe a dinner. It doesn’t matter. No matter how staged the photo is, it captures a moment where everyone is happy. No one is thinking about anything other than enjoying themselves. That’s special.
I’ve had boyfriends, most of them meaningless. I’ve been lucky enough to have such great friends. Behind me I’m memorialized with my most favorite. We’re floating on a lake in Maine. Our smiles are so wide and our bodies are weightless as we cling to tubes over the water.
That’s a moment in which I wish I could live forever. I think everyone has that. One spot in their life they wish they could back to, no matter how brief. I work hard to take care of myself and be there for my family. But that picture. I remember a time where I worked for nothing. In that weekend it was just me.

2024.04.23 18:47 CroneWisdom61 To any woman who says "I can't..."

I'm sorry, but I'm going to say what you don't want to hear. I'm not judging you but it will probably sound like I am. I've been on this road a long time so my opinions are only that - my personal opinions, but they come from experience. Please try to read all the way through, even if I make you angry here and there.
Here's the thing that gets me every time: "I'm done with... " "But I can't do anything about any of it because..."
How can it be both "I'm done" and "But I can't do anything about it"?
If he's an addict, even if he is 'sober' which we all know would be a miracle - sober isn't recovery and doesn't last. It also doesn't create the real changes in their thinking and relationship skills. He 'struggles' because he is not CHOOSING to do any recovery work! He's an adult, it's way past time for blaming his mom, his childhood, his friends - it's time for him to grow the heck up. If he has undiagnosed issues he needs to see a doctor. Again, that's what grown-ups do - and too many partners search and hunt for something to blame for the adult decisions of the addict.
You're hurt. You're lost. You're tired. And there's no wonder why! You have FAR too much on your plate without the resources that would help you manage it all.
Are you homeschooling your kids? In a dysfunctional home? You have kids who are depending on you NOT to be "done". They need you to be healthy, fully functional, and able to nurture them, protect them, love them unconditionally. On top of all that they are counting on you to EDUCATE them! I'm very familiar with homeschooling and have been for almost 35 years, I homeschooled my child with special needs for 5 years, and have several close friends who homeschooled their kids, some successfully and some definitely not. Successfully homeschooling means getting them to many different kinds of socialization opportunities - are they part of group activities, clubs, church groups? They should be. They need to be.
My advice? Make a firm plan to get them in school in the fall. Period. They will be OK! There are too many details to go into about the MANY advantages of them going to school. Get them in summer programs! It's a bit late for registration for many programs but some will still have availability. 4-H summer camps are excellent and affordable. They have everything from art camp to survival skills...it's not all about animals like some people think. 4-H is a super resource for families that is too often overlooked.
If church is part of your lives, most have summer Vacation Bible School weeks - they get to play games and have fun with other kids all day and it's free. You can call the local school and ask for info about summer learning opportunities!
You need to stop accepting and allowing endless 'circumstances' that keep you from building a life for yourself, some independence, and income.
If you and your children are 'trapped' because of funds, etc. But there are computers, smartphones, and cable, gaming, streaming subscriptions? Cut out every single unnecessary thing.
SAHM? If you could have even a part-time job wouldn't that go a long way to helping the family in so any ways?
I know, wives of addicts/abusers are beaten into dust (I've been there), frequently (intentionally by the abuser) isolated - with no support system or financial resources or even adequate medical and mental health care.
But - there's also something called 'learned helplessness' - it's very real but CAN be overcome!
There is help for you! You don't have to accept this life, and you shouldn't accept it! As soon as we say we "can't do anything about it..." we're already incorrect. We're kidding ourselves. We're letting ourselves down. If we're breathing we're not powerless. The road will be hard, maybe harder than anything you've done before. But the rewards are truly life changing - for you and for your children, and for their children...because that's the way life works. What they live they will model for their kids...and on it goes.
You children should be your motivation, and what better inspiration could there be?
How are they going to know or expect better if they aren't seeing what that looks like? How can a daughter learn what healthy love and respect from a partner looks like if she's never seen it? How can she learn what a strong woman can achieve in life if she doesn't have a roadmap, a mother who modeled that way of life? How can a young man be expected to know how to treat the women in his life with love and respect if he sees the opposite daily, in his home.
They say "Children learn what they live" and I wholeheartedly believe that.
There's so much you can do to start changing the entire dynamic here, the trajectory of your life.
Talk to your doctor, get the medical and mental healthcare you need and deserve! Tell them the truth, they can be terrific sources of help and support. They often know about resources you wouldn't find on your own.
If it fits into your views, join a church - you need to make friends, build a life outside of your marriage. Your kids need social support. If not a church, a community group or club.
School! Summer programs! The Parks Dept. in many communities have free summer programs. Anything to get the kids out of the house and engaged, and offer you some time to work on YOUR recovery and self-development.
If you happen to be low-income, there are grants for higher education for you! Most community colleges have non-degree programs that teach skills you could use to get back into working. They are very affordable.
My point is that no woman can or should, simply throw her hands up and say they CAN'T do anything about it. You can and you must. The other choice is obviously to accept that this is the life you're CHOOSING - for you and for your children. It's all a choice, as an adult we don't get to abdicate our responsibility to choose our path - it's going to happen whether we like it or not, it's simply the natural order of things. Our paths are determined one day, one step, one decision at a time, until they add up to years, decades, a lifetime. To stay is a choice, to go is another. To prepare yourself for independence is a rational adult decision, not to is still a decision.
You might be wondering where I get off writing this, why the heck do I feel somehow "qualified" to offer this advice? That's a fair question.
My answer would be because I'm 60+ and I've made every mistake in the book, I've been there. I did all the things wrong - until I was offered some hard truths, a path to resources, and told that it was MY life, my kids needed me to do better. And I did. I am living proof that it's possible. It was hard. Really hard. But FAR from impossible. I got out of a 20+ year marriage with $17 to my name and two kids. I built a career, a whole new life.
What I didn't do well enough was to heal myself fully and become truly empowered, but that's a another story. I'm certainly doing that now!
My only goal in participating in this group now, when I can, is to give back. Yes, I learn and get support from it too, but I'm doing OK because of what I learned here a couple of years ago. There were a few of women here that told the hard truths, called out the realites of life with a PA without mincing words or making excuses. They told it like it is and pointed to the resources that WILL make a difference IF you take advantage of them. PLEASE take advantage of them!
I love quotes, here's a great one: (thank you Substantial_Low for the corrections - sloppy work on my part to misquote, yikes)
I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better. Maya Angelou
And...
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning. Catherine Aird 1930– English writer in St Louis Post-Dispatch 1 November 1989
My life is a bit of both horrible warning and hopefully now, good example.
That's why I wrote this.
To tell you that you deserve more. A much better life. And you can build it, one step at a time. Never give up on yourself. Never.

2024.04.13 01:41 LDGreenWrites Lyricism and That moment in YAYA with the missing drumbeat

Lyricism and That moment in YAYA with the missing drumbeat
Damn Bey’s always been decent with lyrics, and DC too (“The Story of Beauty” and the storytelling even in “Bills, Bills, Bills” and “Bugaboo”), but now whoa…. This is some next level poetry wound into this album and am I wrong or is she channeling Langston Hughes, maybe even Maya Angelou(?), and who else?
And in YAYA when the drum drops out and my heart skips a beat and somehow it’s like the sexiest things I’ve heard in a song that is so ridiculously simple. It builds excitement as she says put them babies to bed (bc stuff is about to get wild). HOW DOES THIS WORK?!? I’m obsessed.

2024.04.05 16:27 msz4fran A good poem in English needed!

Hello, I’m from Poland and I need to find a poem to recite at a contest. It needs to be pretty short as I’ll only have 2 minutes to present it. I really like poetry but we only learn about polish writers at school (maybe except Shakespeare) so I don’t know anything good in English. I really hope someone will be able to help
EDIT: I want to thank all of you guys that recommends something! I’ve chosen a poem but I don’t want to delete this post in case anyone else would like to find some good pieces of literature 🩵🔥

2024.04.05 14:06 NoworBusiness ⚜️ THE LAST GUIDE YOU’LL EVER NEED ⚜️ [HOW TO GENERATE NEW BUSINESS IDEAS] ✅✅2024 ✅✅

Ever felt like your brain is a nut, refusing to come with brilliant ideas? You're not alone. Welcome to the "last guide you'll ever need to master the art of generating business ideas on your own."
Demystifying Creativity : First off, let's bust a myth: creativity isn't a mystical potion granted to the chosen few. It's more like a muscle, and guess what? Everyone has it. Pablo Picasso once said, "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up." Our first step is recognizing that creativity is within reach; we just need to stretch and exercise it.
Creating the Right Environment : Environment plays a huge role in nurturing creativity. Did you know that Mark Twain wrote many of his classics in a secluded shed, away from the chaos of daily life? It’s about finding your shed, metaphorically or literally. An environment that whispers (or screams, if necessary), "It's time to create."
Habits of the Creatively Gifted : It's about habits, not just random sparks of genius. Be like Maya Angelou, who rented a local hotel room by the month to write. She'd arrive there at 6:30 AM and write until 2 PM, with only a dictionary, a Bible, a deck of cards, and a bottle of sherry. Find your ritual that paves the way for ideas to flow.
Connecting the Dots : Steve Jobs said, "Creativity is just connecting things." Feed your curiosity, explore diverse interests, and don't be afraid to connect seemingly unrelated dots. It’s in these connections that innovative ideas are born.
Brainstorming Techniques : Forget conventional brainstorming. Try reverse brainstorming instead – start by imagining the worst possible ideas. It’s not only hilarious but surprisingly effective in paving the way to genuinely groundbreaking concepts.
The Power of Perseverance : J.K. Rowling was rejected by twelve publishers before Harry Potter found a home. Remember, rejection is not the end; it’s just a step in the journey. Embrace failure as a lesson, not a stop sign.
PS+BONUS - The (Real) Ultimate Strategy : Here's the secret sauce: Combine all the above and add a pinch of daily discipline. The best strategy? Write down 10 new ideas every day. They don’t have to be good; they just have to be. This practice, borrowed from James Altucher, trains your brain to be an idea-generating powerhouse.
Feeling stuck or need a spark of motivation? Connect with me on Telegram (check the signature of this post). Whether it's a chat over virtual coffee or a brainstorming session, I’m here to help you turn the gears of your creativity machine.
Remember, creativity isn't about waiting for the storm to pass; it’s about learning to dance in the rain. Let's start dancing.
Having a brilliant idea is like lighting a spark in the dark. But remember, a spark by itself won’t keep the dark away for long. It’s just the start. To turn that spark into a blazing fire, you need more than just a moment of excitement. It takes hard work, sticking to it even when things get tough, and always being ready to make your idea better. The journey from a cool thought to an actual thing can be really long and full of surprises. You’ve got to protect and grow your idea through all kinds of weather—doubts, people not getting it, and all those times things just don’t go as planned. Thomas Edison once said something smart: “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” So, yeah, be ready to put in the work.
And this whole thing? It’s more like a marathon than a quick dash. You’ll learn a ton, get better at what you do, and sometimes, you might need to change direction. Being open to change and learning from everything that happens—that’s the key to making something that lasts. Remember, the businesses that stick around and make a difference are the ones that weren’t afraid to evolve. Starting with your idea is just kicking off an amazing adventure of making something new and figuring things out as you go. If you ever need a bit more info, some advice, or just someone to bounce ideas off, I’m here. Just reach out, and let’s make that spark turn into something awesome.
