Wouldn’t mind some advice…

2024.05.19 00:11 Dear-Cockroach-6979 Wouldn’t mind some advice…

(Sorry, it’s kinda long)
Hey everyone,
A bit about me: I grew up in a toxic household with an alcoholic abusive single mother. She had anywhere from 15-20 stray cats in our home that she spoiled and loved more than me. She sure made that clear! My father left me and my mother when I was two years old and he never came back. I was put into the California foster care system at age 13 due to my mother being reported multiple times by my junior high school counselor. From there I went to several mental hospitals, lockdown facilities and group homes up to my 18th birthday. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder back in my adolescent years. I haven’t been evaluated as an adult but I’m sure I would be diagnosed with MDD if I were.
I have spent almost my entire adult life doing nothing with myself. I spent a lot of time early on sleeping in my car and showering at my friends houses. My grandma in Arizona helped me out a great deal and let me stay with her and find work, and I was proud of myself although I was working a menial janitorial job at a casino. I’m pretty tech savvy and skilled with automotive repair but I never pursued further education. When my grandma passed away in 2007 I got severely depressed but I managed to get a place to live with roommates and held down a full time job, again at a casino doing janitorial work. Developed a gambling addiction and an alcohol addiction. Got a DUI in 2008 and that started my legal troubles. Lost my place and lost my job.
I slept in my car and worked at casinos doing menial work again. Met a woman at one of the jobs and got married April 2010. She had a few kids with a bunch of baby daddy drama, and I couldn’t deal with it so I just walked away and the divorce was finalized by the end of the year. I stopped drinking after that. From there I kept working until 2011, when I decided to quit my job, take my old Subaru XT and hit the road. Went all over the southwest US sleeping in the car and exploring, got a few tickets for no insurance, got my license suspended for said tickets and also for not paying my payments on the DUI. I got to Albuquerque NM and my car finally croaked on me. Transmission failure. Slept in it for a week or so in a mini-mall parking lot until the cops were called on me and unsurprisingly took my car. I was officially a street person at age 26.
I spent several years hitchhiking, panhandling, dumpster diving, hopping freight trains and finding spots to sleep or camp wherever I could. I was so depressed that I didn’t take very good care of myself and had no desire whatsoever to try to better myself and dig out of the hole I got myself into. I used to call myself an urban survivalist. I remained in this state of mind until late 2022 when dental problems nearly killed me. I finally found a place to stay in Nevada with a lady I called a foster mother but I had a very hard time getting used to being housed. I got all my teeth yanked and a set of dentures thanks to Nevada Medicaid. I got a job at a car wash for six months but gave up the job due to stress at home and workplace nepotism. I even got a few credit cards and got my score up to 719! Anyhow, foster mother was an alcoholic, she started to remind me of my biological mother and I couldn’t stand it anymore. I had a few thousand dollars saved up and moved back to Arizona a couple of months ago.
I am currently at a weekly motel and have been attempting to find any work I can. Managed to get interviews for dishwasher jobs, housekeeping jobs, janitorial jobs and night crew at a grocery store. Haven’t heard back from any of them though. I have half of my savings left and it seems inevitable that I’ll run out of money pretty soon.
I have a good feeling that the ridiculously long gap of employment looks terrible on my resume and that may be a reason I’m not getting anything. I mean, what do I tell the interviewer, that I was a damn bum?
I like to think I’m pretty smart. I was disassembling and reassembling IBM PC’s before I hit puberty. I was the computer technician for my high school back in the Windows XP era. Once I started driving I began teaching myself automotive repair with Chilton and Haynes manuals along with plenty of trial and error. It blew people’s minds when I, a dirty bum, helped get their car back on the road if I noticed they needed assistance. I helped a man I met at a park and did an engine swap on his Nissan Xterra over a couple weekends in exchange for new camping gear.
I can’t get work as a mechanic or do any driving related jobs unless I get my license back and it would take a LOT of money to get it back. On top of that I have to have an ignition interlock in any vehicle I drive. I wouldn’t mind getting into computer repair but I don’t have the certification to do so, and I’ve been out of the loop for a long time. I have a MacBook Air M1 and wish I could learn a way to make money with it like some sort of remote job but that seems impossible to me at this point.
For the record, I still don’t drink and I’ve never done a hard drug in my life. I haven’t smoked weed in months so I am able to pass a drug test if I were hired somewhere. Also, I have no felonies whatsoever on my record. Some people like to be stereotypical so I figured I’d throw that out there.
I guess what I’m asking is what should I do at this point? What path would you take if you were in my shoes? I won’t lie, suicide has been on my mind a lot lately. I don’t have many friends and I don’t have any family to talk to. I don’t like being a burden on anyone. Should I just accept that I’m gonna probably be homeless again, possibly for the rest of my life? Is there anywhere in the US that I could possibly get back on my feet with some sort of labor work and a place to sleep? I’d move anywhere if I knew I had a shot. Am I a lost cause at age 38? I’d love to hear some ideas!

2024.05.18 23:54 Anxious_Campaign_286 California divorce. Co owned property spouse left and stopped paying after a yr and half. What are my rights?

Backstory; Ex and I bought a home in summer of 2018. I was diagnosed with cancer a yr later in May of 2019. 7 months later she asked for a divorce and left and stopped helping with bills. I have and continue to pay the mortgage. She did not want to have anything to do with the house and left it for me if I paid off the car loan. I paid car loan off and signed over title. She now has filed for divorce and wants half of the equity for the home. I cannot buy her out and refinance so only option would be to sell. What are my options?
When she said i could keep the house and wanted no money from it, i already had in mind if/when i sold the home, I would still give her 25k to 50k because I feel I should do something. Once she found out the home had more than doubled since we bought it, she started talking about half. I've thought sbout fighting for a larger portion during the divorce process, a set number, percentage or just asking for 50% of things I've paid for over the last 4 and a half yrs, which would be deducted and paid to me out of the 50/50 split in equity.
Everything seems overwhelming and causes chronic stress to where I feel sick even thinking about the process. I'm also considering not responding to the divorce papers and letting the judge decide without ever having to go in and fight over it. In that case I would be okay with an equal 50/50 split as it means I can avoid the entire process until I have to sell the home. Would that cause the judge to "punish" me by awarding her a larger than 50% portion? Again I'm fine if she gets half in that case if it means I never have to file a response or go to court and deal with the process.
What would be a recommended course of action and what are the possible outcomes for each situation?
Please help!!

2024.05.18 21:40 Dry-Cardiologist-771 Cash Gift Question

I would like to preface all of this that I was in a very abusive marriage mentally and financially. Not looking for sympathy I go to therapy for that, but please keep this in mind when reading, and I would really appreciate if negative opinions are kept to yourselves. I will post the story then add the caveats at the end.
In 2015 my then fiancé and I went to purchase a home together. We live in the state of Nevada. I was told then that he had spoken to his friend, a loan officer, who told him that if we were to buy the house together we would be “fined” because we were not married.
I sold my home, and moved into his house while we waited to purchase our own. Once we found it, because of what his “friend” had told him, I gifted him $200,000 for a down payment to avoid the fine. I was young and didn’t have enough credit then, so it would have to be purchased under his name as we had a significant down payment, but needed to obtain a mortgage for the rest. He obtained the mortgage under his name only.
I wrote out paperwork for the gift of $200,000 and was able to have a cashier’s check made. After we were married in 2016- he refused to put my name on the house. I was able to finally do this in 2020, so my name was on the house.
In 2021 we refinanced due to the super low interest rates, and added my name to the loan. In 2022 we were divorced and he took the house, while I received two investment properties we had. The dollar value was pretty much identical so it was an easy solution to avoid selling everything and starting over. Which I wish I had done now.
He refuses to refinance my name off the loan, but has asked me to sign the title to him. I sold one investment property to obtain my own home and have down payment money. I cannot obtain another mortgage because technically I am responsible for one, and I don’t have enough cash to purchase something outright. So I am looking at paying capital gains which is neither here nor there. I took him to court, and basically our decree states that he is RESPONSIBLE for the loan, but it does not say to refinance me off of it so my motion was dismissed. So I am stuck with a loan for an asset I no longer have, that I purchased basically with my $200k gift. He does make payments on time for the loan.
Thank you in advance. I also accept that there may be no way to get it back and I obviously know not to be so trusting next time.

2024.05.18 21:20 random-bs-gooooo Filed motion of contempt, now what? Idaho

Short backstory:
In the divorce decree judgement, my ex is ordered to make payments on the house and a vehicle. These both have my name on them, and she did not make the payments. I got a repo report on the truck today, and the house is in foreclosure.
I filed a motion for contempt which was accepted by the court two weeks ago, do I need to request a hearing or will that be set up automatically? This is in the 5th judicial court of Idaho.

Directors at the Box Office: Clint Eastwood (Part 1)
https://preview.redd.it/m07tmkxgi81d1.jpg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a069dd209bca819edad29814e0bbd2b76eaa50db

As Reddit doesn't allow posts to exceed 40,000 characters, Eastwood's edition had to be split into two parts because his whole career cannot be ignored. The second part will be posted tomorrow.

Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Clint Eastwood's turn.
Eastwood was a troublemaker at school, and he had a bunch of odd jobs such as lifeguard, paper carrier, grocery clerk, forest firefighter, and golf caddy. In 1951, he was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War and was discharged two years later. Through this, he got into contact with a Hollywood representative, who got him into acting classes and started his acting career. He got his start by starring in the hit show Rawhide, but he said he was exhausted by the experience. This caught the attention of some film producers and he decided to act in films directed by the then-unknown Sergio Leone. His career was on the rise, and then he got the chance to make his directorial debut.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

It should be noted that as he started his career in the 1970s, some of the domestic grosses here will be adjusted by inflation. The table with his highest grossing films, however, will be left in its unadjusted form, as the worldwide grosses are more difficult to adjust.

Play Misty for Me (1971)

"The scream you hear may be your own!"
His directorial debut. It stars Eastwood, Jessica Walter and Donna Mills, and follows a radio disc jockey being stalked by an obsessed female fan.
Before his colleague Irving Leonard died, he and Eastwood had discussed the idea of producing a film that was to give Eastwood the artistic control he desired, and his debut as a director. Eastwood said he was ready, "I stored away all the mistakes I made and saved up all the good things I learned, and now I know enough to control my own projects and get what I want out of actors."
The film was a huge success for Eastwood, and it also received positive reviews. So far, his directorial career was off to a great start.
  • Budget: $950,000.
  • Domestic gross: $10,600,000. ($81.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $10,600,000.

High Plains Drifter (1973)

"They'd never forget the day he drifted into town."
His second film. The film stars Eastwood, Verna Bloom and Mariana Hill, and follows a mysterious stranger who metes out justice in a corrupt frontier mining town.
Eastwood reportedly liked the offbeat quality of the film's original nine-page proposal and approached Universal with the idea of directing it, which would make it his first directed Western. The screenplay was inspired by the real-life murder of Kitty Genovese in Queens in 1964, which eyewitnesses reportedly stood by and watched. Holes in the plot were filled in with black humor and allegory, influenced by Sergio Leone.
It was well received, and the film even surpassed Play Misty for Me at the box office. Eastwood was just going up.
  • Budget: $5,500,000.
  • Domestic gross: $15,700,000. ($110.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $15,700,000.

Breezy (1973)

"Her name is Breezy."
His third film. It stars William Holden and Kay Lenz, and follows the relationship between a middle-aged real estate agent and a young hitchhiker.
This was his first directed film without starring on it. And his lack of presence certainly hurt the film; it received mixed reviews and flopped at the box office.
  • Budget: $750,000.
  • Domestic gross: $200,000. ($1.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $217,753.

The Eiger Sanction (1975)

"His lifeline, held by the assassin he hunted."
His fourth film. Based on the novel by Trevanian, the film stars Eastwood, George Kennedy, Vonetta McGee, and Jack Cassidy. It follows Jonathan Hemlock, an art history professor, mountain climber, and former assassin once employed by a secret government agency, who is blackmailed into returning to his deadly profession for one last mission.
The film received mixed reactions for its writing, and it wasn't a box office success either.
  • Budget: $9,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $14,200,000. ($82.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $14,200,000.

The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)

"An army of one."
His fifth film. Based on the novel Gone to Texas by Forrest Carter, it stars Eastwood, Chief Dan George, Sondra Locke, Bill McKinney and John Vernon. The film tells the story of Josey Wales, a Missouri farmer whose family is murdered by Union militia during the Civil War. Driven to revenge, Wales joins a Confederate guerrilla band and makes a name for himself as a feared gunfighter. After the war, all the fighters in Wales' group except for him surrender to Union soldiers, but the Confederates end up being massacred. Wales becomes an outlaw and is pursued by bounty hunters and Union soldiers as he tries to make a new life for himself.
Eastwood was fascinated by the novel and he bought the film rights, hoping to star on the film. He got Philip Kaufman involved as screenwriter and possible director, but left after disagreeing with Eastwood in the material adapted to the screen. Kaufman insisted on filming with a meticulous attention to detail, which caused disagreements with Eastwood, not to mention the attraction the two shared towards Locke and apparent jealousy on Kaufman's part in regard to their emerging relationship. This caused Eastwood to take over as the director. Kaufman's firing angered the DGA, as he did most of the pre-production, and sanctioning a $60,000 fine. This resulted in the Director's Guild passing a new rule, known as "the Eastwood Rule", which prohibits an actor or producer from firing the director and then personally taking on the director's role.
The film received critical acclaim, and in subsequent years, is ranked among Eastwood's greatest films. It was also a huge success at the box office, doubling his previous highest grossing film. It was also one of the few Western films to receive critical and commercial success in the 1970s at a time when the Western was thought to be dying as a major genre in Hollywood.
  • Budget: $3,700,000.
  • Domestic gross: $31,800,000. ($174.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $31,800,000.

The Gauntlet (1977)

"The man in the middle of..."
His sixth film. It stars Eastwood, Sondra Locke, Pat Hingle, William Prince, Bill McKinney, and Mara Corday. It follows a down-and-out cop who falls in love with a prostitute, to whom he is assigned to escort from Las Vegas to Phoenix for her to testify against the mob.
While it received mixed reviews, it became another box office success for Eastwood, becoming his now highest grossing film.
  • Budget: $5,500,000.
  • Domestic gross: $35,400,000. ($182.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $35,400,000.

Bronco Billy (1980)

"The most outrageous of 'em all."
His seventh film. The film stars Eastwood and Sondra Locke, and focuses on the financially-struggling owner of a traditional Wild West show and his new assistant.
It became another critical and commercial success for Eastwood, who referred to the film as one of his most affable shoots of his career.
  • Budget: $6,500,000.
  • Domestic gross: $24,265,659. ($91.9 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $24,265,659.

Firefox (1982)

"The most devastating killing machine ever built... his job... steal it!"
His eighth film. Based on the novel by Craig Thomas, it stars Eastwood, Freddie Jones and David Huffman. The Soviets have developed a revolutionary new jet fighter, called "Firefox". Naturally, the British are worried that the jet will be used as a first-strike weapon, as rumors say that the jet is undetectable on radar. They send ex-Vietnam War pilot Mitchell Gant on a covert mission into the Soviet Union to steal the Firefox.
The film received mixed reviews, but it earned almost $47 million, becoming Eastwood's highest grossing title as director.
  • Budget: $21,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $46,708,276. ($151.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $46,708,276.

Honkytonk Man (1982)

"The boy is on his way to becoming a man. The man is on his way to becoming a legend."
His ninth film. It's based on the novel by Clancy Carlile, and it stars Eastwood and his son Kyle. It follows Red Stovall, a country music singer and composer. With his nephew Whit by his side, he travels to Nashville to perform at the Grand Ole Opry in the backdrop of the Great Depression.
While the film received acclaim, it earned just $4.4 million, becoming his second worst performer.
  • Budget: $2,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $4,484,991. ($14.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $4,484,991.

Sudden Impact (1983)

"Dirty Harry is at it again."
His tenth film. The fourth installment in the Dirty Harry series, directed, it stars Eastwood and Sondra Locke. The film tells the story of a gang rape victim who decides to seek revenge on her rapists 10 years after the attack by killing them one by one. Inspector Harry Callahan, famous for his unconventional and often brutal crime-fighting tactics, is tasked with tracking down the serial killer.
The film received mixed reviews from critics, but it earned over $150 million worldwide, Eastwood's first film to pass that milestone. It's also very popular for including the iconic catchphrase, "Go ahead, make my day."
  • Budget: $22,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $67,642,693. ($212.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $150,642,693.

Pale Rider (1985)

"...And Hell followed with him."
His 11th film. It stars Eastwood, Michael Moriarty and Carrie Snodgress. A couple and their daughter, along with a few others, are driven out of Lahood, California, by goons working for a mining baron. However, a stranger enters their life to assist them in their fight.
There was no stopping Eastwood: another critical and commercial success.
  • Budget: $6,900,000.
  • Domestic gross: $41,410,568. ($120.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $41,410,568.

Heartbreak Ridge (1986)

"The scars run deep."
His 12th film. It stars Eastwood, Marsha Mason, Everett McGill, and Mario Van Peebles. The story centers on a U.S. Marine nearing retirement who gets a platoon of undisciplined Marines into shape and leads them during the American invasion of Grenada in 1983.
The film was inspired by an account of American paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division using a pay telephone and a credit card to call in fire support during the invasion of Grenada, and fashioned a script of a Korean War veteran career Army non-commissioned officer passing on his values to a new generation of soldiers. Eastwood was interested in the script and asked his producer, Fritz Manes, to contact the US Army with a view of filming the movie at Fort Bragg. However, the Army read the script and refused to participate, due to Highway being portrayed as a hard drinker, divorced from his wife, and using unapproved motivational methods to his troops, an image the Army did not want.
It received mixed reviews, with some deeming the film as "imperialist propaganda". But it was still another box office success.
  • Budget: $15,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $42,724,017. ($121.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $121,700,000.

Bird (1988)

"There are no second acts in American lives."
His 13th film. The film stars Forest Whitaker and Diane Venora. It is constructed as a montage of scenes from saxophonist Charlie Parker's life, from his childhood in Kansas City, through his early death at the age of 34.
Eastwood, a lifelong fan of jazz, had been fascinated by Parker ever since seeing him perform live in Oakland in 1946. He approached Chan Parker, Bird's common-law wife on whose memoirs the script was based, for input, and she lent Eastwood and arranger Lennie Niehaus a collection of recordings from her private collection Before Eastwood was involved, Richard Pryor was originally cast as Parker.
Despitive positive reviews, it performed poorly, earning just $2.2 million in North America.
  • Budget: $14,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $2,181,286. ($5.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $2,181,286.

White Hunter Black Heart (1990)

"An adventure in obsession."
His 14th film. Based on the novel by Peter Viertel, it stars Eastwood, Jeff Fahey, George Dzundza, Alun Armstrong and Marisa Berenson. It follows a famous movie director, John Wilson, who goes to Africa to make his next movie. He is an obstinate, contrary director who'd rather hunt elephants than take care of his crew or movie. He has become obsessed with one particular elephant and cares for nothing else.
Despite positive reviews, it made just $2.3 million domestically, not even 10% of the budget.
  • Budget: $24,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $2,319,124. ($5.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $2,319,124.

The Rookie (1990)

His 15th film. The film stars Eastwood, Charlie Sheen, Raul Julia, Sônia Braga, Lara Flynn Boyle, and Tom Skerritt. It follows a veteran police officer teamed up with a younger detective, whose intent is to take down a German crime lord in downtown Los Angeles, following months of investigation into an exotic car theft ring.
It received negative reviews for its acting and story, and it became another flop for Eastwood. That's three bombs in a row. Ouch.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $21,633,874. ($51.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $21,633,874.

Unforgiven (1992)

"Some legends will never be forgotten. Some wrongs can never be forgiven."
His 16th film. It stars Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Richard Harris and Morgan Freeman. It follows William Munny, a widower with two young kids, who was once a very vicious gunfighter who gave up everything after marriage. Now, a man named Schofield Kid brings him an offer that he cannot refuse, forcing him to come out of retirement for one last job.
David Webb Peoples wrote the script all the way back to 1976, and it was optioned by Francis Ford Coppola, but he lacked the funds needed to helm it. By Eastwood's own recollection, he was given the script in the "early 80s" although he did not immediately pursue it, because, according to him, "I thought I should do some other things first". Eastwood has long asserted that the film would be his last traditional Western, concerned that any future projects would simply rehash previous plotlines or imitate someone else's work. He dedicated the film to his close friends and mentors Sergio Leone and Don Siegel. Hackman initially refused to participate as his daughters were upset that he was starring in too many violent films, but he became fascinated by the script that he agreed.
It opened with $15 million and it legged all the way to $100 million after playing for almost one year, closing with $159 million worldwide, his now highest grossing film. The film received Eastwood's best reviews of his career, with many considering the film as his magnum opus as director. It received 9 Oscar nominations, and won four: Best Picture and Best Director for Eastwood, Best Supporting Actor for Hackman, and Best Film Editing. So Eastwood, on top of being a reliable box office draw, was now a 2-time Oscar winner.
  • Budget: $14,400,000.
  • Domestic gross: $101,167,799. ($225.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $159,167,799.

A Perfect World (1993)

His 17th film. Kevin Costner, Eastwood and Laura Dern, and follows an escaped convict who takes a young boy hostage and attempts to escape on the road with the child, while being pursued by a Texas Ranger.
The film received critical acclaim, and has appeared as one of Eastwood's best films. The film disappointed in North America, but it earned up to $100 million overseas (Eastwood's first film to gross that much) and ended with $135 million worldwide.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $31,130,999. ($67.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $135,130,999.

The Bridges of Madison County (1995)

"The human heart has a way of making itself large again even after it's been broken into a million pieces."
His 18th film. Based on the novel by Robert James Waller, it stars Eastwood and Meryl Streep. The film is set in 1965, following a war bride, Francesca Johnson, who lives with her husband and two children on their Iowa farm. That year she meets National Geographic photojournalist, Robert Kincaid, who comes to Madison County, Iowa to photograph its historic covered bridges. With Francesca's family away for a short trip, the couple have an intense, four-day love affair.
It received more critical acclaim, and made over $180 million worldwide, becoming his highest grossing film. For her performance, Streep was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress.
  • Budget: $22,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $71,516,617. ($146.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $182,016,617.

Absolute Power (1997)

His 19th film. Based on the novel by David Baldacci, it stars Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Ed Harris, Laura Linney, Judy Davis, Scott Glenn, Dennis Haysbert, and Richard Jenkins. It follows a master jewel thief who witnesses the killing of a woman by Secret Service agents.
It received mixed reviews, and disappointed at the box office.
  • Budget: $50,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $50,068,310. ($97.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $92,768,310.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997)

"Welcome to Savannah, Georgia. A Ccty of hot nights and cold blooded murder."
His 20th film. Based on the book by John Berendt, it stars John Cusack and Kevin Spacey. It follows the story of antiques dealer Jim Williams, on trial for the killing of a male prostitute who was his lover. The multiple trials depicted in Berendt's book are combined into one trial for the film.
It received mediocre reviews, and flopped at the box office.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $25,105,255. ($48.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $25,105,255.

True Crime (1999)

His 21st film. Based on the novel by Andrew Klavan, it stars Eastwood, Isaiah Washington, Denis Leary, LisaGay Hamilton and James Woods. It follows a journalist covering the execution of a death row inmate, only to discover that the convict may actually be innocent.
This was another project that received mediocre reviews and flopped at the box office.
  • Budget: $55,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $16,649,768. ($31.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $16,649,768.

Space Cowboys (2000)

"Boys will be boys."
His 22nd film. It stars Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, and James Garner as four aging former test pilots who are sent into space to repair an old Soviet satellite.
It received very positive reviews, and earned over $128 million worldwide.
  • Budget: $60,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $90,464,773. ($164 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $128,884,132.

Blood Work (2002)

"He's a heartbeat away from catching the killer."
His 23rd film. Based on the novel by Michael Connelly, it stars Eastwood, Jeff Daniels, Wanda De Jesús, and Anjelica Huston. It follows a retired FBI agent who recently had a heart transplant but still takes up the job to nab a killer.
It was another film with mediocre reviews and flop status.
  • Budget: $50,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $26,235,081. ($45.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $31,794,718.

Mystic River (2003)

"We bury our sins, we wash them clean."
His 24th film. Based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, it stars Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Kevin Bacon, Laurence Fishburne, Marcia Gay Harden, and Laura Linney. It follows three childhood friends who are reunited 25 years later when one of them suffers a family tragedy.
Michael Keaton was originally cast in the role of Det. Sean Devine, and did several script readings with the cast, as well as his own research into the practices of the Massachusetts Police Department. However, creative differences between Keaton and Eastwood led to Keaton leaving the production. He was replaced by Kevin Bacon. This was the first film in which Eastwood would be credited as composer.
The film had a slow roll-out, but it was aided by strong word of mouth, closing with a wonderful $156 million worldwide. It also received acclaim, and was named as one of Eastwood's greatest films. Sean Penn received universal acclaim for his performance, with some naming it among the best acting of the century, particularly for one scene (if you watched it, you definitely know which scene). It received 6 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Eastwood. It won two: Best Actor for Penn and Best Supporting Actor for Robbins.
  • Budget: $25,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $90,135,191. ($153 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $156,595,191.

2024.05.18 21:08 saffa-dad-x2 🇿🇦 in 🇺🇸 needing to divorce

So both my wife and I are South African and in the USA with permanent residency cards. A bit of googling showed that we actually need to submit a divorce decree to the consulate so South Africa recognizes our divorce.
Has anyone here gone through a similar situation and can give advice? I contacted a lawyer in South Africa that specializes in this and as we are amicably separating, I don’t feel the need to actually engage with a lawyer to mediate.
Our kids are also old enough that that is not a concern.

2024.05.18 20:09 puncher-bunkers Orange County vs. Bay Area FasTrak comparison questions 2024

I live out of state and was considering opening a FasTrak account to save costs on rental cars (I travel 2-5 times to the Bay Area and 0-2 times to Orange County annually).
Also I read Is Orange County's Fastrak the best? but the post is 3 years old so I thought some information may need to be updated.
Orange County FasTrak Bay Area Fastrak
Prepaid (prepaid account) or postpaid (charge account) Prepaid only (auto-replenish can be unexpectedly high? (3 year old post))
1) Free sticker, flex (switcher) charges $20 2) Buy in local Costco for $44.99 that comes with $50 toll credits (costs -$5.01) 1) Free flex (switcher)? 2) Buy in local Costco for $24.99 that comes with $30 credits? (Found Costco link but that's for Business Center)
Prepaid account can get discount in the next month once monthly spend is over $40 (not for me obviously) No other discounts
Can close account online Can close account via offline methods only (form, phone calls?, in-person service center?)
Items marked with "?" are my educated guess that I couldn't find direct links for.
Here are my thoughts/questions - Maybe people who moved from NorCal to SoCal are best to answer:
  1. Prepaid vs. paid if it's like $20 in the account, I don't mind - But I don't live in California, so my spending will not be worth the prepaid amount that could be $100+ for a Bay Area account - this is based on that one negative post, so the numbers can be skewed. Hence preferring OC FasTrak Charge account.
  2. Is Bay Area transponder free with online account though? I couldn't find official information, just some comments under some posts. If so, it seems Bay Area FasTrak is better on this front.
  3. Or, with some trouble, I could buy the transponder from Costco which both seem to be -$5.01. But if I'm making a trip for it, it seems more financially beneficial (albeit small) to get the Bay Area Costco transponder and register it in the Orange County FasTrak account - Can this be done? Or transponders in local Costcos must be linked to the local toll agency's FasTrak account?
  4. It seems TheTollRoad has an app - Is it easy to update license plate info in it? Since I need to do that every time I rent a car. Bay Area FasTrak doesn't have an app (but if the website is mobile-friendly I could live with that too)?
  5. Lastly, maybe more of a Bay-Area question, is the toll so high that maybe I should just pay for the Unlimited Toll pass from rental car companies (I use Avis most of the time, and they charge $12.99+tax/day for unlimited tolls) and skip all this?
Thanks all in advance!

2024.05.18 18:31 Electrical-Drop-253 Don't let Destiny brigaders fool you. Destiny is a scumbag.

Destiny has a loser fanbase that will go and brigade subreddit to defend Destiny's honor and try to control the narrative. They want to paint Destiny as some highly moral and principled character who also is an intellectual. The problem is Destiny is none of that.
Throughout his streaming career Destiny has burnt 100s of bridges with other people and content creators. He abandoned his son to move to California and fuck girls. Had drama with every single girl he fucked. Been in multiple divorces because he's unbearable. There is a reason why so many people hate this man.
Destiny also loves to start drama with other communities and when those communities push back he runs back to his community to play victim. Destiny is a massive crybully. He will complain that he gets doxxed, death threats and no other streamers will come to his defense but what he won't tell you is that in EVERY single instance, he is the instigator.
Destiny is also not funny. Every single meme or joke he posts is stolen from his own subreddit. When Destiny does post an original thought-out joke is just him using the N word like an edgy teenager. This man is 35 years old btw. Destiny is so desperate to appear edgy to his teenage fans. It's cringe and embarrassing for 35 year old man to act this way.
Destiny often will say that he presents a unique perspective unlike people like Hasan, well that is the biggest horseshit ever told. Destiny is known to participate in petty politics. When he doesn't like someone he will be an annoying contrarian. Take the recent events with Israel and Palestine. Very early leftists were supporting Palestine and of course, Destiny who has a hate bonner for people like Hasan and Vaush had to choose the opposite side. In the beginning, Destiny knew very little about this conflict but was adamant in his defense of Israel. At that time Destiny couldn't even find Israel on a map or know who the leaders of the conflict were. He started to do research but his research wasn't trying to seek the truth but to justify his support for Israel. Often time Destiny does this. He chooses a side and then does research to justify it. He reads a few wiki pages and declares himself an expert on the subject, when someone presents a different view he spergs out and gets emotional like a 12 year old child.
I can go on and on with more examples with full details of Destiny being a scumbag such as the NFT hypocrisy, him trying to de-platform other content creators when at the same time saying he's against platforming and so on but that will take the rest of my day to finish.
Here is what's going to happen now. In a few minutes, Destiny simps will come in droves to brigade this post. They will try to deflect, strawman, and ad hom attack but will not dispute any one of my claims. These people are brainwashed. They have been manuplated and can't think straight.
TLDR: Destiny is not a good person, is not funny, debates in bad faith, and is a massive hypocrite. He has convinced thousands of people a lie through his manipulation tactic. Fuck Destiny.

2024.05.18 17:56 misspulchritude Considering Divorce

My (F39) husband (M39) has already left me emotionally and mentally whether he realizes it or not. I can’t remember the last time we had sex.
His family was mean to us and don’t like me. He wants to socialize with his relatives like a happy family in a Hallmark film but they don’t like him like that. His father said that “they talk about him behind his back.” He’s unhappy and because of that he is never in the mood for sex.
The man doesn’t defend me among his family and doesn’t know how. I decided to stay away from the drama after he vented to his family once about things he didn’t like about me. That fueled the hate for me. (Things like suggesting he closing his bank account and switching to a credit union when BoA had that data breach and someone was spending his money in California, and having him pawn his car because he dropped out of college with student loan debt and was only making $16 an hour at the time. His car paid half, and our tax refund plus one of my paychecks paid it all off in 4 months.)
I just asked him last night to stop lying to me and tell me the truth. I always ask if he’s happy and he says yes. If he was happy we’d be having sex like we did the first year of our marriage. He admitted that he misses his family and because I always call it a fairy tale fantasy he doesn’t share it with me. He’s also insecure about being a good enough father and chooses not to share anything with me because he thinks he knows what I’ll say.
I’m angry. All I wanted was for my daughter (F15months) to have the love of both parents. Yesterday while dropping her off with her grandmother, she placed her hand on his chest and pushed him away when he tried to get a good bye hug. It hurt his feelings and he started talking about maybe she would be better off without him. She’s only a baby and doesn’t comprehend empathy or sympathy yet. My father did something similar when I was a 1 year old. I ran to my mother’s boyfriend instead of his arms and he turned around and never looked back. Neglecting me and complaining about child support my entire life. Never even picked me up for his weekend and summer custody time.
I don’t want any child support. I just want my baby to stay happy like she is so that her mind can continue to grow like it is doing. She’s such a genius compared to her peers. My husband is damaged beyond repair by his family and he doesn’t want therapy. The only reason I have not left him yet is because I don’t want him to bring her around those mean people on weekends and ruin my happy child like they did him. (He has no voice among them and chooses to just do whatever he’s told to keep the peace)
To add insult to injury, he recently brought an irresponsible man (M39) into our house who was evicted and about to be homeless for missing his weekly rent at a dorm. The man quit his job after moving in with us. 2 months rolled by and he still hadn’t applied for a job. I sent him job links in month number 3. If I didn’t bring it up that man would have stayed here for over a year because my husband doesn’t enforce anything. The guy even washed dishes, they were visibly dirty still and my husband just rewashed them himself instead of saying anything to him. We had a talk with the man, he said he was depressed when I asked why he hasn’t been applying for jobs. He even admitted to harming himself and suicide attempts when he was a kid. My husband claims he didn’t know that and still feels safe because the man has never attempted in the 5 years that they’ve known each other.
SUMMARY : considering divorce. Only still together for my child’s safety. The thought of her unsupervised in his custody scares me.

2024.05.18 17:19 AODCathedral Why not the California Age-Appropriate Design Code Act?

This week the State of Maryland passed a law similar to the California Age-Appropriate Design Code Act (CAADCA), an important privacy that illustrates how Big Tech responds when government passes sweeping legislation threatening a primary business line. The CAADCA was bipartisan legislation that passed each house without a “no” vote, was signed by Governor Newsom, and was to be effective July 1, 2024, had the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit not stopped it on constitutional free speech grounds.

According to the Tech Policy Press article,
The Act would require online businesses likely to be accessed by children – defined as any user under the age of 18 as determined through “age assurance” methods – to default privacy settings to the highest level and complete an impact assessment before any new products or features are made publicly available. Failure to comply can result in steep fines.

The Act was challenged by Netchoice, a tech lobbying group whose members include Google, Meta, and TikTok, in a lawsuit it filed last December (NetChoice v. Bonta). NetChoice argues that despite proponents’ claims that the Act was designed to protect minors, it does so by “replacing parental oversight with government control.” One of the core claims in the suit is that the CAADCA would violate its member companies’ expressive rights. This means, according to NetChoice, that the Act restricts businesses’ ability to exercise their own editorial discretion, imposes strict liability, and chills speech.

Since children under 18 have no free speech rights, the free speech in question is corporate free speech and, more specifically, corporate liability. You have to at least appreciate their consistency: NetChoice is arguing that the CAADCA would stifle its companies abilities to speak, those same members who have avoided any liability while profiting prodigiously by not having to regulate others’ speech. NetChoice’s legal arguments are found in their suit against the California Attorney General and focus on the obligation the CAADCA places on firms to “censor” speech on the internet, which Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act largely excused them from doing and enabled them to gobble up online advertising and media markets without the hinderance or expense of liability.
One issue here I find fascinating is how U.S. laws and dominant legal thinking favor the protection of corporate speech over the ability for state governments to pass laws protecting minors from pervasive and dangerous technology. I’m not an attorney, but I’d love to hear thoughts on why that is.

2024.05.18 15:51 PoppaSquot More on the standard characteristics of all Japan's New Religions - including Soka Gakkai

Continuing on from this post, this information also comes from Helen Hardacre's book Kurozumikyō and the New Religions of Japan, Princeton University Press, Princeton, New Jersey, 1986 - "Chapter Seven: The Unity of the New Religions" (pp. 188-193):
This study has identified a vitalist, spiritualist world view as the most fundamental factor unifying the new religions. Whereas prior studies have recognized a rather standardized list of traits as shared by a number of the new religions, this study has tried to show how those traits are unified in originating from a particular conceptualization of self in relation to other levels of existence coupled with regular patterns of thought, actuion, and meotion. The kingpin of the system is the idea that the self-cultivation of the individual determines destiny.
You can see this clearly expressed in this SGI saying:
"A great human revolution in just a single individual will help achieve a change in the destiny of a nation and, further, can even enable a change in the destiny of all humankind."
That's the belief, at least. We don't see SGI members having anything close to this kind of impact on society or the world at large, and they've had over 80 years to show us all, almost 65 years here in the US. Nothing.
The religious life consists of such cultivation and of repaying the benefice of deity.
Before anyone tries to say, "There's no 'god' in SGI!", remember that Ikeda HIMSELF defined the Soka Gakkai/SGI as a "monotheism". Considering that Ikeda is defined as "the world’s foremost authority on Nichiren Buddhism" and "the supreme theoretician" (with the only qualification apparently being the all-controlling leader of the Soka Gakkai/SGI), so whatever Icky says, goes.
And don't forget the SGI's emphasis on YOUR eternal gratitude.
Textual erudition, esoteric ritual, and the observance of abstinences will not serve as a basis for elevating the religious status of priests above that of the laity. The laity therefore tend to be central.
Hence the inherent tension in the relationship between the Soka Gakkai and Nichiren Shoshu, ultimately showing that the "new religions" and the "old religions" simply don't mix.
Since individual self-cultivation is the primary determiner of all affairs, fatalistic notions and ideas of pollution must be recast. Unhindered (or less hindered) by notions of pollution, women play key roles.
The "new religions" are so much better positioned to exploit this huge source of donations and free work! The Ikeda cult certainly has.
Because all problems can be traced to insufficient cultivation of the self, one cannot expect fundamental social change to occur through political action.
Even though, ironically, this attitude simply entrenches the status quo and creates no change at ALL. As explained here, this belief simply produces a conservative attitude that rejects society's efforts to collectively help those in need. How many times did you hear in SGI that such-and-so needy person didn't need actual help; they "just need to chant to change their karma!"?? The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. put it succinctly:
Now the other myth that gets around is the idea that legislation cannot really solve the problem and that it has no great role to play in this period of social change because you’ve got to change the heart and you can’t change the heart through legislation. You can’t legislate morals. The job must be done through education and religion. Well, there’s half-truth involved here. Certainly, if the problem is to be solved then in the final sense, hearts must be changed. Religion and education must play a great role in changing the heart. But we must go on to say that while it may be true that morality cannot be legislated, behavior can be regulated. It may be true that the law cannot change the heart but it can restrain the heartless. It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me but it can keep him from lynching me and I think that is pretty important, also. So there is a need for executive orders. There is a need for judicial decrees. There is a need for civil rights legislation on the local scale within states and on the national scale from the federal government. Source
And civil rights legislation has done far MORE to advance the causes of equality and justice than ANY religion ever has. For example, the SGI still clings to its anachronistic, old-fashioned "4 divisional system" based in traditional Japanese patriarchal family norms, even though this is ill-fitting and inappropriate, even offensive, in Western cultures.
Similarly, attempting to cure disease through medical therapies alone can produce only a shallow healing.
As discussed here, this kind of selling point might've flown in the 1800s, even in the early 1900s, and in the chaos of post-WWII defeated/occupied Japan, when people didn't really have access to medical treatment that worked, but now? GTFO. There are very few who will go for this, and they tend to be uneducated. You'll notice this "faith-healing" is hardly a major selling point any more.
Keeping in mind that the focus of this book is on one of the oldest of Japan's "new religions", Kurozumikyō, to illustrate how very similar ALL Japan's "new religions" are to each other, with only minor differences, and this includes Soka Gakkai:
The code of ethics seen in Kurozumikyō is not solely its own invention but is generally shared by both new and established religions. It rests in principles of family solidarity, authority of elders, and a clear-cut division of labor between the sexes.
Is it still required in Japan that female Soka Gakkai employees retire as soon as they marry?
From the March 2022 paper, "‘Genderism vs. Humanism’: The Generational Shift and Push for Implementing Gender Equality within Soka Gakkai-Japan":
This paper investigates how young Japanese women in contemporary Soka Gakkai (SG) navigate Japan’s continuous gender stratified society that remains culturally rooted in the ‘salaryman-housewife’ ideology. How are young SG members reproducing or contesting these hegemonic gender norms that few seek to emulate? While SG has long proclaimed that it stands for gender equality, its employment structure and organization in Japan until recently reflected the typical male breadwinner ideology that came to underpin the post-war Japanese nation-state and systemic gender division of labor.
As an organization that has long claimed to support an internationalist/global ‘humanist’ agenda, driven by Daisaku Ikeda’s interpretation of Nichiren Buddhism, SG in Japan also rose to prominence in a society that culturally and ‘legally’ stratified men and women through a systematic gender division of labor.
According to the global gender gap index reported by the World Economic Forum, Iceland followed by Finland stood at the top of 156 countries as the most gender equal societies in 2021; Japan was ranked at 120 as one of the most unequal societies; the closest other OECD country was Italy, ranked as number 633. Even though the rate of female employment now mirrors other OECD countries, no significant change in women’s employment status and position in Japan has occurred. Women in management positions, economic participation and opportunity ranked 117, while their educational attainment stood as number 92, and political empowerment was close to the bottom, at number 147. Why would Japan, as an affluent, post-industrial society, find it so difficult to achieve gender equity on par with other OECD countries?
The Soka Gakkai (SG) certainly is not at ALL "progressive" on this issue! Ikeda blathered endlessly about "the century of women" and "empowering women", yet the organization HE CONTROLLED completely subjugates and exploits women! There ARE no female Soka Gakkai vice presidents.
Even if SG may be one of the biggest private organizations in Japan, the core work force by comparison is much smaller than the SG organization as a whole. Core regional or national male leaders were typically employed and remain employed as core workers on the general track, while until more recently the equivalent female leaders employed by the SGHQ would retire from paid employment upon marriage, and continue ‘unpaid’ leadership positions in the local area. ... SGHQ consists of the central leadership of the organization, but as an employer was built on the model of a typical Japanese company. This meant male employees were stratified as the core labor force and female employees as periphery, disposable labor. This thinking, on the one hand, reflected assumptions about women’s role as homemakers and mothers, which meant that SG female staff upon marriage would stop paid employment. In reality, this did not mean ‘retirement’ to become homemakers, but rather that married women continued ‘working’ for SG as leaders in the local voluntary organization. The vast majority of female and male members of SG never work for the organization as employees, including most of its women leaders. The organization throughout its post-war period relied heavily on the women’s division or fujinbu 婦人部 (see also McLaughlin 2019 who translates this more narrowly to refer to married women). However, particularly those women trained through working for the SGHQ moved onto become effectively unpaid staff and leaders in local areas once they had married and were economically supported by a husband. Women in SG, both those who were employed at the SGHQ and those that were in employment in other places before marriage—a much larger number—could be said to have been and still today remain the key driving force behind SG’s development in Japan: women organize, execute and lead a range of activities that involve the majority of members in the voluntary organization.
Yes, Soka Gakkai women work hard - just without pay. It's utterly exploitative. You can imagine how utterly dependent women are within this system and how vulnerable in cases of divorce. It's NOT AT ALL "humanistic" OR consistent with any "century of women"!
This family-centered ethic is found in established Buddhism and Shrine Shintō, and no new religion denies it. Some in fact go much further than Kurozumikyō to articulate it plainly and to implement it with a vengeance. The main difference in the familistic ethic between the established religions and the new lies in the sustained attention, systematic socialization, and organizational support available to the follower in the new religions. Specifically, counseling helps followers implement the world view's patterns of thought, action, and emotion, and rewards them for doing so.
Within the SGI, this is the whole "guidance" framework buttressing the (non)discussion meetings as a consistent source of indoctrination, I mean "support".
The question why this world view of the new religions arose as a pervasive orientation at the end of the Tokugawa period (1603–1867) is quite remarkable. In large part the new religions themselves are responsible for its propagation. In addition, however, it harmonized well with social institutions and mores prevalent before 1945. ... The family system as codified in the Meiji Civil Code of 1898 embodied a familistic ethic closely resembling that of the new religions. No doubt these religions were greatly supported by the promulgation of this ethic by the pre-1945 educational system. Even when compulsory education dropped morality courses from the curriculum, the new religions continued to preach much the same content, shorn of chauvinistic rhetoric about the divinity of the emperor and the sacrality of the Japanese nation.
In all the new religions, persons over about fifty years of age occupy most positions of leadership, and the consequences of this fact are weighty.
Indeed. In 1986, when this book was published, Icky was 58 years old. While the Soka Gakkai started out as a "young" movement, the fact that Ikeda held onto power as he aged and never ever "passed the baton" to a younger successor or "turned the reins over to the youth" meant that the Soka Gakkai was doomed to become old and stale. Perhaps it was only the fact of Toda's death at this same age (58) that enabled the Soka Gakkai new religion to ever gain a reputation as a "young movement"; Toda held onto all the power and control until his own death, though it seems more a function of his leadership and less akin to Ikeda's pathological grasping, and it was a lucky break for Icky that Toda cacked it so early. Otherwise, he'd have been left like poor Harada, who only became President of the Soka Gakkai when he was already retirement age, 65 years old. Soka Gakkai is now an elderly, declining organization, and that's because Ikeda chose to gather ALL power and control to himself and KEEP it until his own death. Hardly "progressive" or "visionary"!
These individuals were educated under the prewar system, and they have received as part of their primary education a view of the family as a microcosm of the nation, of its roles as pervaded with a sacred character, paralleling a view of Japan as a divine nation. They tend to see the family in terms of the ie rather than in terms of the nuclear family, and to regard its organizational principles as sharing the quality of sacredness.
This "ie" concept is unfamiliar; in the West, it is most closely approximated by Britain's noble families, such as the "House of Windsor".
when the ie or household system dominated in Japan. According to this system, the eldest son was responsible for the social and economic well-being of everyone living under his household, including parents, spouses, children, and siblings. This was considered particularly important in the years leading up and during World War II when “the government re-emphasized the virtue of the ie system by claiming strong family unions to be the basis of a nation ruled by the emperor, the head of all families.” During this time, almost all marriages were either arranged or approved of by the head of household. Source
This is an interesting angle, because perhaps you may recall the incident, immortalized in whatever form in the original "The Human Revolution" novel series, when Toda approached Ikeda's father and asked him to "give" Ikeda to him - Ikeda's father sounded quite overjoyed to be rid of Ikeda. It was Toda who arranged Ikeda's marriage. Toda was clearly acting as "the head of household" here.
Similarly, Ikeda claimed to be "father" of everyone in the Soka Gakkai/SGI, quite possibly in preparation for replacing Japan's Emperor with himself.
Here is a bit more on the "ie" system - you'll be able to see some of the aspects of SGI that seemed odd while you were "in", I think:
Thus it is not simply efficient or proprietous to obey elders, for women to defer to men, or to maintain clear role distinctions between men and women. It is sacred; failure to uphold these principles is immoral and worthy of censure.
This mentality is behind former SGI-USA national women's leader Akemi Bailey-Haynie's statements about the "ironclad" (as she put it) four divisional system. She knew which side her bread was buttered on, so naturally she was going to lean all the way in.
the SGI’s attempts to feign social progressivism.
SGI attracts many progressive leaning people, because the teachings appear to be democratic and universal. (How many of you heard that Nichiren Buddhism was the only school of Buddhism that held women could also attain enlightenment? I did, too many times to count.) Large gatherings in my area were notably diverse - racially, socioeconomically, and country of origin. The SGI also positions itself as an egalitarian organization without an elite Priesthood class. Everyone is a Buddha - and therefore a spiritual equal. The never-ending propagation focus is inclusive - much in the way of the Borg. Prepare to be assimilated!
All of this masks an utterly authoritarian, patriarchal, Japanese-controlled, socially regressive organization that says one thing and does quite another.
It's the Ikeda way...and of course Ikeda is THE "elite", the BETTER "Buddha" than any of YOU losers. No one will ever equal the "eternal mentor", and don't even fantasize about surpassing him, because you can't. That's SGI DOCTRINE. It's Ikeda's game and no one else gets to play, even when he isn't here any more.
That the SGI would have an affinity group for LBGTQ members that simulates inclusion - and simultaneously maintain the divisional structure that is by definition exclusionary - is as dysfunctional as it gets. Source
For SGI to devise a special group for LBGTQNAA members ("Courageous Freedom", whatever THAT means) that is supposed to represent inclusion, while simultaneously maintaining a divisional structure that BY DEFINITION excludes them - proves that this show of "inclusion" is nothing more than a façade, window-dressing to promote itself and conceal its rotten core, while the "ironclad" dysfunction of the SGI remains unchanged. Source
Regarding the "ie" structure of Japan's hundreds-of-years-old family businesses:
The logic of the “ie” system can be described with the following points:
  1. The primary objective of the parties in the “ie” relationship is to survive and prosper. The “ie” is neither a contractual venture whose objective is to maximize profit nor is it a venture which can be liquidated after squeezing it dry.
  2. Ideally, the “ie” must last forever, and as the “ie” prospers so does the family. Therefore, if the “ie” does not exist, neither can the family.
  3. It is the parents’ responsibility according to the “ie” to continue to have it prosper for the welfare of the family. In a certain sense, it is feudalistic, whereby the parents give children unconditional orders, and the children receive unconditional support.
  4. The “ie” is an organization in which members will give their all for the benefit of the “ie” by sacrificing their own personal benefits.
  5. Each “ie” has its specific precepts, habits, and culture. Members are brought up under the same philosophy, or religion, to create a strong team.
With regard to that last point, that was apparently the basis for counting all new converts as "households" - they were expected to convert everyone in their family to Soka Gakkai. The Ikeda cult took that as a given, which actually makes some sense, given the pre-war school indoctrination the leaders of the Soka Gakkai had all experienced; as stated above, it harmonized well with social institutions and mores prevalent before 1945.
Unfortunately for Ikeda and the Soka Gakkai, the appeal of this kind of structure was losing strength post-WWII; it's easy to see Toda's wisdom in declaring in the 1950s that, "If we don't achieve 𝘬𝘰̄𝘴𝘦𝘯-𝘳𝘶𝘧𝘶 within Japan within the next 25 or 26 years, it's game over." The Soka Gakkai's success in taking over Japan ("kosen-rufu") depended upon that conditioning that was no longer happening in the schools or in the family. Ikeda believed he was great enough that he'd be able to overcome the fading of that all-important cultural conditioning within the population after 1945, and somehow "win" against the odds. He didn't.
The new religions continue to think of the ie as the model for family relations. That is, the idea of a corporate body passed from generation to generation, engaged in a common means of subsistence, its eternality symbolically manifest in the cult of ancestors, continues to be the conceptual norm.
Conversion is almost entirely limited to urban areas.
Large corporations in Japan typically screen prospective employees to eliminate members of the new religions. There is an inherent conflict between these two types of organizaitions, based upon a paradoxical similarity. The company at its largest and most elaborate seeks to accommodate nearly every need of its employees until the time of retirement, with a corresponding claim upon their loyalties and to a lesser extent, those of their families. Thus individuals already committed to a creed and to an organization over which the company has no control are suspect and probably unable to commit themselves to the extent of someone who has no such commitment. But it is necessary to recall that only a small proportion of the work force is employed by large corporations. The new religions provide ladders of prestige and reward for achievement, and this is a potent source of their appeal. ... Much as a man rises through the ranks in a company, members of the new religions can win reward and recognition that might well be beyond their reach in secular society. Since secular success so often depends heavily upon education and personal connections, persons lacking these may find themselves barred from many opportunities.
And there you have it!

2024.05.18 08:56 throwaway-fathernc AITA for not caring about my father's cancer

Throw-away because don't want people who know my main account to find out. Excuse me if this sounds incoherent - I'm a mechanic and writing is not my strong suit.
High level summary. I (mid-40s now) grew up in a small country until I was 11, and then moved to the US. My mom basically raised me and my siblings, earned money for the home, and did everything in the house, all by herself. I went NC with my dad after college because he did nothing for the family, in fact, negative. I recently heard he has cancer and is going through treatment, but I don't care.
More details:
My mom was a teacher in my original country, did fairly well. My dad was in and out of businesses either he started or his friends did, and he joined them. He's always on business trips, or "working super hard" at the office, going before we wake up, and coming home after we sleep.
When I was 11 I remember there was some huge argument between my parents, and very soon after, the whole family uprooted and immigrated to the through connections with relatives. My mom had to quit her teaching job, and pick up minimum wage jobs to keep our family afloat. In the mean time my dad continues to do odd jobs, connecting with "business-minded people", making friends with them, and start ventures that have little future, or even worse, get scammed. My dad had asked my mom for so much money to invest in new business ideas.
None of those worked out. Sure, once in a while he'll bring home some $20k USD, and say "this business is gonna work" and then lose it all from investing badly - buying inventory he can't sell or investing in factories that closed immediately - and not get anything back.
I eventually went to community college on mostly my own money from working as a tutor and living at home rent-free, to a UC in california on student loan and scholarships on my own. Graduated with a 3.8 GPA and got into an amazing job that paid $70K out of college back ~2000. In this time, I used my scholarship money to buy my dad a new set of tires for his truck, a computer for the parents, and various household things like clothes and food.
It was a few years after I graduated college that I realized how much of a shit good for nothing my dad was. I also learned that the reason we left our original country was because my dad had been using his random earnings on prostitutes, and when my mom found out, the solution at the time was to move out of our country to avoid the temptations.
In any case, I found that out some time after college and decided that my mom has been amazing while my dad is a shit human being. So I told my siblings and mom that I'll never talk to my dad again. I ended up dropping out of college after getting familiar with an owner of a local auto shop, with my half-broken car, who then took me in as an apprentice, and eventually helping me to get licensed.
Fast forward to now. I'm in my mid-40s, and my parents are in their mid/late 70s (mom/dad). Just a week ago, I heard from one of my siblings that my dad was hospitalized. I didn't even ask, but she then told me "he has cancer and is undergoing treatment". And I just said "ok" and moved on. My sister understood that, and never brought it up again.
My mom had divorced my dad some 3-4 years ago, without making a scene, and she said that while she felt a lot of anger, she couldn't help but care. But she also told me she understands if I still don't want to talk to him.
Basically at this time, my mom and all my siblings (older sister, older brother, and younger brother) kind of care and try to keep contact with my dad, but also understand how I hate him and have nothing to do with him.
I was talking with a friend about this situation, and she told me how, it's been 20+ years, and I should just forgive and forget, and give my dad some closure, because one of his regrets is that I still don't talk to him.
At this point I don't know how to think - I feel I'm 100% justified to not talk to my dad. But these two friends keeps saying that I should forgive him and show some support. I keep telling people that he's a bad dad, and I don't want to ever talk to him again. But one acquaintance told me I'm heartless. So, am I the AH in this situation?

2024.05.18 08:06 Dear-Cockroach-6979 Trying to figure out a path to take…

In recent days, the news of the attack of an alleged stray dog on a 3-year-old minor in a colony of Torreon, Coahuila, but it is not the only similar case in the state. In 2016, a similar case, but with fatal consequences, covered the main headlines throughout Mexico, both for the attack and the efforts of an activist so that the animal was not euthanized and the real perpetrators were punished.
We tell you the story and sad end of Max, a pit bull dog accused of killing a child in Saltillo.
On December 1, 2016, Iker Misael Ulloa Muñoz, a three-year-old boy, was brutally attacked by a pit bull dog in the Las Margaritas neighborhood, Saltillo, Coahuila. On that fateful day, Iker was playing in the street with other children when the dog, which had escaped from a nearby house, attacked him, dragging him 50 meters and causing fatal injuries.
The child was rushed to the University Hospital, where a team of 12 doctors worked to save his life. Despite the efforts, Iker suffered brain death due to multiple organ failure secondary to hypoxia, as a result of the severe bites that compromised his larynx and trachea. The little boy passed away on Monday, December 12 at 10:35 am.
The tragedy not only devastated the Ulloa Muñoz family, but also generated an intense debate about the responsibility of pet owners and the fate of the animal aggressors. Max, the pit bull responsible for the attack, was confiscated by the authorities and an investigation was opened by the State Attorney General's Office.
The case took an unexpected turn when actor and activist Raúl Juliá Levy intervened, demanding that Max be handed over to his foundation in the United States to be rehabilitated. Juliá Levy not only offered to rehabilitate the dog, but also accused Iker's mother of negligence, stating that she should be criminally prosecuted.
"I call on the Municipal Government of Saltillo and demand that the mother of the boy who was attacked by the PITBULL be criminally prosecuted, as well as the release of the dog to be delivered to my foundation in the United States for rehabilitation," Juliá Levy posted on his Facebook account.
After a lengthy legal process, Max was released and transferred to Raúl Juliá Levy's foundation in Malibu, California, on January 25, 2017. This decision was hailed by some and criticized by others, generating thousands of interactions on social networks. Juliá Levy stated that Max's case would change the perception about pit bulls in Mexico.
However, Max's story took another dark turn. In California, the dog bit three more people, leading authorities to again consider putting him down. The Coahuila Attorney General's Office confirmed that Los Angeles District Attorney Ricardo Ramos had Max in temporary custody while his fate was being decided.
Unfortunately, this time Max's fate could not be changed and in October 2017, the canine was euthanized in California after he bit the actor's then partner.
My "Max" was not a simple dog, he was a hero, a being that will live in my heart for the rest of my days and that is how I will remember him. I fought to the last consequences to save him and I couldn't, forgive me my little one. My ex-wife euthanized him," Levy shared.
"In January of this year "Max" arrived at my Hotel Foundation, the first puppy that after being falsely accused of having 'killed' a child, won my heart but not my wife's," wrote Raul in his Facebook profile. "A few months ago 'Max' attacked her outside while I was walking him and my wife approached me to tell me something 'Max' reacted and bit her in the waist and ankle immediately she ordered the police and the kennel to be called, They took my "Max" and she DEMANDED that they kill him, she was so angry that she had one of the employees sign a document that she herself wrote where she said that the dog had attacked her too, which was totally false. We divorced because I preferred to be with my little dog, an innocent defenseless being who was a victim of ignorant people.
Raul Julia Levy, 24 january of 2017, on Facebook: "MAX the "PITBULL" puppy that attacked the child IKER ULLOA in Saltillo and died as a result of his mother's negligence, was released today by a judge's order to be transferred tomorrow Wednesday to the Raul Julia Foundation based in Malibu California for rehabilitation, MAX is the first officially documented case in Mexico in which a dog is freed from being euthanized for attacking a minor and sent to another country to be rehabilitated. We will set a precedent, this case will change the perception of PITBULLS in Mexico."
Raul Julia Levy, 15 september of 2017, on Facebook: "Now that 'max' has been granted a not guilty verdict by the Coahuila State Attorney's Office, there is still a very strong doubt how is it possible that the MOTHER OF THE CHILD IKER is a 'witness' of this PENDEJO Mr. Holmes of the Los Angeles dog pound when this old lady is not even listed as a witness of neither MOTHER in the file archived in Saltillo.... I am going to publish the complete file that the same Procuraduria of the State of Coahuila provided to the dog pound of Long Beach with the purpose of killing my dog, all of you will have access to the complete file and I warn you the images are very painful I ask for discretion but this is with the desire to expose the truth and the way in which many authorities in Mexico behave with malice and advantage, The file was released with the consent of the authorities since they were the ones who did it and in doing so it was the same kennel of Long Beach that published it. I was asked by my lawyers to take it down a notch or two a few months ago, but it is time for them to know the truth and what is going on. The Los Angeles dog pound is also getting a million dollar lawsuit, and we are going to expose all their shit, these idiots have a lot of SHIT too. And about what a group of PENDEJOS have been accusing me of on social networks, the sentence has been issued by the Attorney General's Office of Guanajuato about alleged 'document fraud and multiple identities' and we are putting together the press conference I promised them.... And as one GORDA says there is 'mucho mas mucho' I wouldn't want to be in her shoes. !"
Raul Julia Levy, 15 october of 2017, on Facebook: "I have something very important to communicate to all of you who have followed me for a long time, you know that I am not a man to talk about my personal life, much less go around venting my love life, this morning I received a capture in which someone from my Hotel and Foundation in Los Angeles "Paw Hills Pet Hotel" said that I was not associated with that entity and that I had no right to use the images of the facilities and that they were already taking legal action.
Now I have no choice but to tell you a sad reality that I have been carrying with me every day of my life and that never ceases to torment me. I never thought this day would come and with all the pain in my soul I want to tell you the following.
A little more than 7 years ago I married my wife Tracie Sorrentini whom I met in Scientology, together we formed a family composed of pure dogs as well as our Hotel for dogs and cats which is called "Paw Hills Pet Hot" the idea was mine and immediately we began to have a great success that we decided to do it commercially and that is how we ended up building a great company in which I had my foundation inside the same Hotel as it is huge and in turn brought puppies from the streets of Mexico.
In January of this year "Max" the first puppy arrived at my Hotel Foundation, after being falsely accused of having 'killed' a child he won my heart but not my wife's, she hated him she never loved him she never accepted him, a few months ago 'Max' attacked her outside while I was walking him and my wife approached me to tell me something 'Max' reacted and bit her in the waist and ankle immediately she ordered to talk to the police and the kennel, They took my "Max" away and she DEMANDED that they kill him, she was so angry that she had one of the employees sign a document that she herself wrote where she said that the dog had also attacked her, which was totally false, four months ago we divorced. We divorced because I preferred to be with my little dog, an innocent defenseless being who was a victim of ignorant people.
My "Max" was not a simple dog, he was a hero, a being that will live in my heart for the rest of my days and that is how I will remember him. I fought to the last consequences to save him and I couldn't, forgive me my little one. My ex-wife euthanized him.
No woman is above the rights of my dogs. And now begins the legal battle to get back what I built myself during my marriage.
I love you very much and thank you for being with me and my "Max" see you later my inseparable friend my only friend."

2024.05.18 07:24 kioku119 Last week tonight talked about the anti-trans laws and a little bit about prison reform in the solitary confinement episode but would it be possible to please talk about organized prison abuse of LGBT people and particularly V-Coding? It's such a horrible occurrence with no real visibility.

The description of V-Coding: A 2018 report from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law along with a subsequent report in the UCLA Journal of Gender and Law, found that it was common for trans women placed in men's prisons to be assigned to cells with aggressive cisgender male cellmates as both a reward and a means of placation for said cellmates, so as to maintain social control and to, as one inmate described it, "keep the violence rate down". Trans women used in this manner are often raped daily. This process is known as "V-coding", and has been described as so common that it is effectively "a central part of a trans woman's sentence". The report also found it common for correctional officers to publicly strip search trans women inmates, before putting their bodies on display for not only the other correctional officers, but for the other prisoners. Trans women in this situation are sometimes made to dance, present, or masturbate at the correctional officers' discretion. The prisoners serving as customers for these women are informally referred to as "husbands". A 2021 California study found that 69% of trans women prisoners reported being made to perform sexual acts they would have rather not, 58.5% reported being violently sexually assaulted, and 88% overall reported being made to take part in a "marriage-like relationship". Trans women who physically resist the customer's advances are often criminally charged with assault and placed in solitary confinement, the assault charge then being used to extend the woman's prison stay and deny her parole.
It has been documented in the UK and France as well. Here is the wikipedia page on LGBT prison treatment. The physical amd sexual abuse section has the description of vcoding above but also other horrific acts against queer prisoners such as prostitution the officer is paid for forced by threats of solitary confinement and extended sentences https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_people_in_prison
Here is the UCLA article directly that a lot of the information came from: https://escholarship.org/content/qt3sp664r9/qt3sp664r9.pdf?t=mlqpzu
It's something that people really should know is happening, especially as victims are often completely dismissed if they try to seek help after.

2024.05.18 07:09 kioku119 I'm helping another post spread awareness of v-coding and other torture and abuse of trans and LGBT people in prisons and encouraged by officers. Info on v-coding and links will be in the description. It is a problem that this largely isn't known about or talked about. Please help share information!

I'm only on Reddit but this needs to be brought to people's awareness so something can be done. So far I intend to post the subs: LGBT, witches vs patriarchy, trans, socialism, and the prison reform but if there are other subs you think will help please crosspost as well or let me know subs I should share it to. If you have a large platform on other platforms that may listen please share this information there.
The original post was from a trans meme sub, but the poster was using memes to vent genuinely feeling lost after learning about this horror since there is so little discussion and awareness. Some comments on the post involve people talking about their genuine experiences with being abused in prisons for being trans or queer and being dismissed when seeking help for after. https://www.reddit.com/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns2/comments/1cu037g/those_poor_trans_girlsthey_didnt_deserve_thisits/
