2024.05.19 14:21 deudawg2 New member to group (Patrick)

Hey, love the ideal of just throwing it all out there as a new member. Tabletop gamer here. My family was introduced to boardgames beyond what I knew as a child about 15 years ago by my brother-in-law, and that has really been the pool of players I've had to choose from. I try to get gamenight going around my hometown of Lebanon, and it fails miserably....no proper time commitments, people not having patience to learn new games and when someone is interested, really not a commitment to sitting aside time for it. I'm in Lebanon, KY, about 90 mins away from Louisville. MY daughter went to UL and now lives in Louisville, so I would not mind driving up. I have @ 150 board games at this point, ranging from Catan, Ticket to Ride, Pandemic, to Scythe and Twighlight Imperium. Twighlight Imperium is really what has caused me to seek out other groups. I'm starting a game in Lebanon that the group of players will meet about once every 2-3 months for a gameday lasting all of Saturday. We are all beginners here, but would welcome any other more experienced players trying to get a game of TI4 in. That being said, I've got the bug for this now, and am interested in joining any other TI4 groups and wouldn't mind driving up to play. At the same time, I'm interested in coming up for all sorts of games if there is an interest on my end. Thanks for allowing me in this space, and hope to hear from and maybe meet members of the group soon.

2024.05.19 14:09 --TheSkyLord-- My Experience with Missions

I had a strange relationship with deconstruction as my dad was trained at a university level to do apologetics. He was an LDS chaplain in the Army, and every night for scripture study, we got discourses on the nuances of our faith and justifications for every question we ever had. I didn’t swear until I was 18 years old, or drink caffinated anything until about that time as well, because it was never a matter of justification. It was what my family, my tribe, my people did, to go to church on Sunday, and to be worthy. I was senior patrol leader and assistant to the bishop if that clarifies who I was. I didn’t have “God will reveal it in due time” parents. I had “Here’s the answer, here’s contemporary discussion about it. Here’s some reading material if you want to learn more” parents, except for they were wicked smart, and had biased conclusions.
I was called to serve in the Mexico City East mission. Shortly before opening my mission call, I broke up with my girlfriend at the time. i left BYU-I and went home to prepare. I received my endowments after lying to my stake president about my worthiness to enter the house of the lord. I came clean, and he threatened to not let me go out for a year because I was unclean. The prick made me talk to a therapist to be cleared for the mission field. The therapist had a brain and let me go out. When I was giving my mission farewell speech, I wrote it to include the teachings of many religions in it. I had drawn inspiration from the 13th article of faith “We believe all things, hope all things-“ and wrote a poem about how Adam and Eve related to the Resurection and Atonement of christ. My dad tells me the stake president was shifting in his seat like he wanted to pull me down from the pulpit. Prick.
The CCM was a pleasure to attend because of my district. The guys in my district there held a secret thanksgiving feast after hours when we were supposed to be in bed with food we had smuggled out of the cafeteria. We had look outs so we wouldn’t be caught by the patrolling teachers. My district was placed under surveillance because of politics against our spanish teacher who we could tell actually cared about us, and we were transferred into a classroom with one sided mirrors, and microphones hanging from the ceiling. An apostle came to speak to the entire CCM, and I thought we would get a chance to meet with him directly, or that he would be even remotely accessible in some way. He was kept away from us, separate and removed even though we had the same mission. I played a lot of volley ball, and got into shape enough that I touched the rim of a basketball hoop for the first time while I was there.
My first companion was a native speaker, and liked to spend the mornings in the cyber (Internet Cafe). He would make sure I was on LDS.org while he looked at softcore porn on instagram. We would spend hours there, and I was disappointed that this was the mission.
We went to a previous investigators house, and while there, we saw preparations for an animal sacrifice. These guys were putting alcohol, cocaine, and blowing smoke onto a white chicken, and placed in into a cardboard box with a bunch of black chickens. They showed us a room full of weapons, with blood and feathers strewn all over the floor. We noped the fuck out, and went home.
I requested an emergency transfer after spending most days in the cyber, watching my companion deface JW’s property, and being an all around dick to me by telling me how to shower and how to sleep.
For his replacement, the person that would help me with his bastion of knowledge, they gave me a white guy who spoke as much Spanish as I did because he was only a transfer further into his mission than me. They made this poor kid senior companion to me before his first transfer was over. Why? Because the kid was a workaholic.
The first thing this elder and I did when we got to our apartment was to pick up and leave to go to the house of a member who had just died. We sang at the wake. I sang in a language I didn’t know, for people I didn’t know, with a companion I didn’t know. We sounded pretty damn good. The elder began setting appointments with the non-believing family members during the service. I just sat and watched the mindless kids chase the family dog.
This elder skipped lunch every day, and made me do the same. We knocked every door in our area twice that transfer. One time, he got very sick, and was delirious out in the sun with me while we were walking. I made us go home for lunch that day, and he made me promise to wake him up after thirty minutes so we could get back to the Lord’s work. Three hours later he woke up, chewed me out for letting him sleep that long, and then begrudgingly thanked me for making him rest.
One time, while walking, this Elder expressed to me that he also had some questions, but he was afraid to share the details because he knew my own testimony was fragile. I pressed him for details of his plight, and he revealed to me the darkest part of church history that he had learned while we were in the CCM, that Joseph Smith had drank alcohol while in Carthage Jail before he died. Thoughts of Fanny Alger, of Mountain Meadows Massacre, and of my own mother’s rather recently implemented looser interpretation of the word of wisdom all flashed through my head. This guy was supposed to be my teacher? All I could do was express how sorry I was for his confusion, and told him to have faith. Heaven knew I couldn’t help him.
One night with this companion, it was storming hard, and the streets were flooded. This guy refused to let us go home. We climbed along fences to avoid getting our already wet shoes soaked, and waded through a foot of water to get to the doors that were slammed in our faces. There was a loose wire on a door bell, and when I rang it, I was shocked by the completed circuit the water made. Rejection after rejection piled up. Finally, my “senior” companion said that this was the last row of houses. On the last house of the last row, there was a family that was all deaf. The father opened the door, and was suprised to see us and didn’t know who we were. I remembered the sign for Jesus from my grandparents who started and ran the ASL endowment ceremony in the Saint George temple. The family was thrilled we knew the sign. When I asked if we could come in, the family politely waved goodbye and closed the door on our faces.
Another time when it rained, something fell into my eye. It was one of those freak nature accidents, and small enough that I couldn’t figure out how to get it out without a mirror. The thing stayed wedged in the corner of my eye for hours before we got home and I could finally get the foreign object out. Looking at it on my finger, I could see it was a small green spider. Days later, still in pain, I pulled what I can only assume was accumulated webbing from the spider that I’d crushed against my eyeball off of my lower eye lid. The pain stopped after that.
I bought a $500 camera. It was stolen within a month.
This Elder and I had the good luck before transfers to baptize two children. They would have been baptized anyways, so I didn’t do any actual converting, but I taught a few lessons, got in the water and did the dunk. Bucket list item, check.
I didn’t have enough time for laundry on P-Day, so I’d wash my outfit and dry in on the radiator through the night. Transfers happen, and my new companion lied to our land lords about the electricity bill, paying it in full but not giving a reason as to why it was so high. I didn’t care anymore, I just needed something clean to wear, but these land lord had treated me and my previous companion well, better than the previous landlord who had stolen our cleaning supplies. I felt these people deserved honesty. My senior companion capitulated eventually, and he and I butted heads regularly after that on the morality of things. I think in hindsight he was a smarter and better man than I was.
The new land lords, the “Lagunez Family”, were wonderful. They included us in their activities, and I felt like I had some people in my corner. When I eventually came home from my mission, a daughter of the family had written me a goodbye letter. She is currently serving a mission. They made some great music, and I have “Infiltradors” on CD, the official name of the band the father of the family was a part of (he was the drummer).
I knew the whole area by heart by that point, so I navigated us to our appointments. Half of the landmarks I watched for to know our location were interesting buildings with unique colors. The other half of my landmarks were dead dogs whose decaying corpses had become second nature to see. I began marking how much time had passed by how deeply a certain dog on a certain dirt path’s chest was caved in.
There was an apartment complex in my area that I had been told not to proselytize in because “It’s dangerous.” Turns out, those people didn’t have any money, so the church didn’t want them. That complex was past the dog and to the east about ten blocks.
My companion and I knocked on a door, and visited a man who was missing his legs. His daughter was there, putting dirty water on the aching wounds. He had a single room for a house, and wheezed when he spoke. He couldn’t afford medication. He still went out and worked all day for his daughter, and gave her whatever money he made, trusting her to keep him alive somehow. The church expected this man to pay tithing. The church expected me to tell this man to pay tithing.
I got the chance to hike up a mountain. At the top, I played chess with a chess set I’d procured from one of the best rapid chess players I’ve ever met. He had been the ward mission leader. He was a good man, a good father, and I wish him the best.
I found another man who was deaf and spoke sign language. I sat with him, and convinced him to come to church all by myself while my companion talked with some tienda tender. I was so excited because this was my own personal project and it was going well. The man came to church, and I sat with him through sacrament meeting. In Sunday school (I can’t believe I did this), I accidentally drooled on the guy. I was just talking so he could read my lips, and I guess I forgot to swallow at some point because a dolup of spit landed on his arm. I apologized profusely, and he played it off, but I never saw that investigator again.
My companion and I knocked a door one day, and a man answered. He wore tattered clothes, and maggots were burrowing into and out of his feet. He muttered something about the stars, missing his wife, and he began to tear up. My eyes stung from the stench. The door closed. Somehow, I knew the man would be dead in a matter of weeks.
I had lost hope that I was doing anything worth while. I looked down on the Doc Martins that had stayed with me five months at this point. I was angry with myself for being so useless in the field, angry with the church for giving me leaders that didn’t listen to my needs or perspective, angry with my mom for drinking while I had to teach people that it was a sin, angry with my dad for giving me the skills and knowledge to justify anything, even pedophilia in the early days of the church, to the point where I could look someone in the eye, and knowing the kind of man Smith was, tell them he was a good man and a true prophet of God. Suddenly a man approached us. He said he recognized us as missionaries, and asked about our message. This never happened. People didn’t just come up to us unless they were crazy or dangerous. But this was a public place, and this guy was genuine. My companion talked to him, and gathered his story, but I was plotting something else. I was done with not caring about these people in a way that mattered. I was tired of walking in another man’s shoes, a man who wasn’t me, who believed different things than me. The chopped leg, the rotting dogs, the infested feet, it all swirled into a single thought in that moment.
What would Jesus do?
I walked over to the man, and in broken Spanish asked him to stand next to me. He did so, and I compared my shoe size to his foot. It was a perfect match. He protested, but I didn’t let him get a word in edge wise. I took off my shoes, put them on his dirty feet, and laced them up nice and tight. Those shoes had cost a ton, and had been meant to last the whole mission. All I had left at this point were my fancy dress shoes that gave my blisters back at the apartment. I didn’t care. I walked home in my socks that day, happy as a lark.
Covid-19 hit a month later. I was one of the few they brought home instead of quarantining. After having served only 6 months. I told God if he wanted me to stay home, he’d have to make them release me.
They released me. I think I was one of maybe a hundred missionaries that were released due to Covid. The church realized their mistake pretty soon after I was released. Once Covid infrastructure began to develop, they didn’t release any more. I guess I didn’t serve a full two years, but I did serve a full mission.
My brother served, and he nearly killed himself due to intense depression brought on by Covid quarantine and poor leadership (I’ve got a few mission president stories, but those are for another time).
I learned lying to someone’s face from my mission, and spent the rest of my time at BYU-I as “nuanced” until the last two years, over which the most epic hoe phase imaginable became my new mission. I spent those years terrified of getting a call from the honor code office.
I’m married now, with my degree irrevocably in my possession. I have friends and loved ones that are in the church and are working on their mission papers. I’m beginning to feel powerless again. I’m seeing the decay again, not on legs, feet, or dogs anymore, but in the souls of the people who the church raises to do their dirty volunteer work. I see them like the animal sacrifices I saw being prepared. I’m not sure what shoes I have left to give to those people that I know are going to be in pain.
My parents are out completely now. It was a long time coming, but they are out and so much happier. I’m working on building a new relationship with my family, one based off of the fact that we won’t be together forever, so we have to make the most of our time together now.
Happy Sunday guys, best of luck to you all. And most importantly, chupa la piña.

2024.05.19 14:07 miaaaai I'm convinced that INC tends to ruin my life.

Hi, a newbie here and a minor. Just a quick background, my mother's side (except for Mama's sister and her family) are members of INC. Yung parents ko po, dati natiwalag sila kasi yung Papa ko before, he's not INC and yung Mama ko naman nung in a relationship pa lang sila ni Papa ay may tungkulin. Nung nalaman na nakikipagtipan si Mama kay Papa, she was kicked from INC. But, nung 2021 they decided na magbalikloob. That time, nag-inquire na sila ng doctrine for me. And nung 2022, naging INC na ako.
First of all, wala talaga akong gana and I'm not interested in this cult in the first place. Just how weird and odd the vibes are whenever I attend BS worship services nila. In the first place din, I don't really give a damn about religion since I grew up believing na iisa lang ang Diyos — People are just differentiated due to their way of worshipping and with their beliefs.
This 2024, may classmate akong religious like sa room, even there's chaos I can notice him just reading The Bible. Mayroon akong classmate naman na INC and she's so devoted with the cult. One time, sa gc namin nagkaroon ng heated argument. Siyempre nasali ako since other religion vs. INC 'yon, and ang opponent namin no'n yung classmate kong palabasa ng Bible. Nilapagan niya 'ko ng mga bible verses no'n, but I was nonchalant about it kasi in the first place hindi ko kaya at ayaw kong lumaban kasi diba nga, I'm uninterested sa cult na 'to.
Last April lang, nagkausap kami nung naging opponent ko sa argument before. Inamin ko sa kaniya na ayaw ko na sa INC. After that, he encouraged me and he opened my eyes na INC is really a cult. Kumbaga, ayoko ng ignorance when it comes to other religions. At least, may idea ako on how they run their organization or the religion itself.”
When it comes to attending WS nga, I sometimes laugh especially when they ask guidance to God na sana i-guide nila si Pangkalahatan. And kapag pinapantay nila si Sugo sa mga Apostles? That's real BS. Tawang tawa din ako sa mga ministro na 'to, too strict to the point that it's more of like a threat rather than a friendly encouragement. E sila nga, palihim na nag-iinuman kapag may mga wedding at ininvite sila sa reception, LOOOL MGA PATAWA 🤪

2024.05.19 14:06 JacquesdeVilliers Setting Viscid in the 90s/MAJESTIC era

I've started running a group through the newly 'remastered' classic 90s DG scenarios. We just started Convergence after finishing Puppet Shows and Shadow Plays. The plan is to play the remaining scenarios as they come out - a campaign we return to whenever a new scenario's been released.
However, all of us are enjoying this campaign so much that I want to keep going before Dead Letter et al. drops. I thought Extremophilia would be quite easy to adapt for the 90s. It's super easy plugging in MAJESTIC there via the Benthic Company.
Viscid is a slightly different beast. Obviously you need to roll back certain aspects of the metaplot, which I won't go into to avoid spoilers. That's not too hard. Just link certain details back to MAJESTIC. The harder question is: when the inciting incident occurs, would MAJESTIC not just swoop in to cover everything up? Could a Delta Green investigation still be accommodated within this framework, or would they be so overpowered so that the investigation is basically dead on arrival?
I'm currently thinking of taking the following approach: Firstly, Tibalt Grieves and Gavin Ross (or some other MAJESTIC hotshot) are still doing this off the books, abusing their power and access to the unnatural for personal, life-prolonging ends. Secondly, this all catches MAJESTIC by surprise (possibly because Ross or whoever deliberately obscures their awareness while putting his own hit team in motion). This delays MAJESTIC's response long enough for Delta Green to get in on the case and do some investigating. Gradually, the Agents might learn that they're stuck between MAJESTIC and a senior member gone renegade. It's then up to the players how they navigate all of this, and up to MAJESTIC how they stamp out or abuse the Agents' involvement.
Would love to hear others' thoughts and ideas.

2024.05.19 14:02 TemperaturePale4075 Be proud and strong

Hi, kids,
My younger son is applying for university this year, so I thought I came here to see what is happening.
I have read many heart-breaking posts in this thread written by kids who have been rejected by "good" schools with averages in mid or high 90s. Schools like UofT and UW, Ivey and Queens have rejected and turned so many young souls into walking mental cases.
Be brave and mature, just accept it. It is not your fault. With grade inflation, some kids got into these "good" "famous" schools, and you get rejected, just because you are attending a school that refuses to play the grade inflation game. Worse, there are private schools that, for want to students and income, give out these outlandish averages of high 90s or 100 to attract paying customers, many of them from China with rich parents. My older son is attending UofT engineering, and he said many of these kids from China attended private school and were able to secure places at UofT. But many of them paid the ultimate price of having to drop out because they are just not smart enough to compete with those who are smart and work hard enough to enter uoft on their genuine grades.
So, grade inflation has destroyed many young lives. What are you going to do? Well, just accept fate and move on. Perhaps you can study at less "famous" schools, work hard, and make the best of the situation, and become a productive and contributory member of society.
And make sure you ask your parents to write to their MPP to tell the Ford government to change the education system. The government should impose regulations on school boards to weed out bad schools, including private schools, that exchange good grades for cash, to level the playing field. If enough of you do that, the government will do something to address the situation. At the moment, no one is complaining, so bad actors go unpunished and bad students with high 90s get into their dream universities, only to drop out because they cannot keep up.
Perhaps we need to do what every country outside of North America is doing, requiring a university entrance exam, the result of which will determine what university and what program each graduating high schooler is able to enter. That for me is the only fair game to play, to address the grade inflation problem and weed out the bad actors.

2024.05.19 14:01 rice_w_broth For all those people who revised really hard but worried about being affected by high grade boundaries.

I'm sure lots of you are worried about the high grade boundaries because it seems like exams so far hasn't been THAT difficult but I just want to say that the grade boundaries cannot change drastically compared to previous years.
The entire point they changed the grade boundaries system from letter to number form is to prevent this problem. Getting a 9 isn't easy but people who have worked hard enough will get the grades they deserve. Trust me when I say there are so many people who don't try hard enough for gcses and people who study a lot for them, in the end it will all balance out and dropping from 9 to 8 cus of a small mistake is unlikely.
The reason why we felt that exams were easier this year is because we have more exam material, every year past papers are put out and exam technique just gets easier, like the aqa chemistry higher tier, that was basically just previous exam questions, but the exam boards will take that into account and there'll be exam questions like that bond question or the vol. of gas question that lots of people will get wrong.

2024.05.19 13:36 chaoszeroomega Can I get tips for improving my 'voiceline asset creation' workflow?

Hey, so I've been using FL Studio in order to create more dynamic mumble-speak esque voicelines for my games (for those not familiar with the specific term, it's the Banjo Kazooie 'every letter is a different toned SFX' approach). I originally did it this way so I could manually create a few specific 'audio phrases' using the SFX of choice, pitched up and down to communicate mood and intonation.
However, I want to go a little further, and I'd like advice on how I should go about this, as an amateur audio engineer.
Right now, I've mostly just been importing the 'voices' of specific characters into FL studio, fiddling around with the settings until I like it. However, I don't really like how my 'voicelines' are just one note/tone, and I wanted to add more into the mix. I want to do this by effectively, getting more samples from whatever I was using as the character's 'voice' and thus creating different syllables for them.
Problem is, I'm not sure how I should go about this more efficiently in FL Studio's workflow. I've previously just used one track per voiceline, but I'm not sure how I can coordinate multiple different instruments on the same track as I'm very inexperienced with music/sound software.
I'm not even sure if it's possible to have multiple instruments on the same track - but the process of switching back and forth on the instruments to try and coordinate it sounds like a really tiring affair, as if I want to make even the most minute change, I'd have to flip between two tracks over and over to make adjustments. Am I missing something? Either way, I hope someone can point me toward a better approach.

2024.05.19 13:36 Polly_Darton_1312 CSA Self Employed help please!

My ex stopped paying CSA 2 years ago. He went on benefits and was sanctioned so my son has received nothing in 2 years.
I was informed last week he would be paying £13 a week, now received a letter stating that he earns under £7 a week so he won’t have to pay CSA. I know through one of his family members that he is selling on eBay and has done since he went on benefits. He has obviously told CSA he is self employed and given them his earnings. He also has two children living with him who he supports.
He has already had £1k arrears write off as they were ‘historic’ and they couldn’t get any money from him.
He’s in £1.2k arrears but this will probably get written on over time.
Any idea on what to do in this situation? CSA have asked me to try and find him on eBay but it’s a needle in a haystack situation. I have been given the advise of reporting him to HMRC
I’m based in England

2024.05.19 13:33 Budget-Wrangler4811 Am I wrong for voicing concerns about my girlfriends colleague?

My girlfriend has recently finished university and is currently working full time while she looks for a job in the sector she would like a career in. The place she works has a small team of around 7 people. She recently got a promotion which she was happy about.
She has to shadow another member of the team who does the same job she will be doing. They get on well but she's mentioned that other people at work have commented on him liking her and saying they seem like a couple.
She also mentioned that he spend a lot of time complaining to her about his girlfriend and his relationship. According to my girlfriend she's the only one he complains about his girlfriend to. He also refuses to invite her to work events where peoples partners are invited.
They have each other on social media and will message a bit outside of work. It started sounding like he was getting too close so I told my girlfriend I was starting to feel a bit uncomfortable since it looks like he's clearly interested in her and other people are picking up on it.
She asked what I wanted to do and I said to just maybe remind him to keep things professional and not to message as much outside of work possibly and then when she's not shadowing him to maybe put some distance between them so he doesn't get the wrong idea and to make sure things remain professional.
She got annoyed and said no and that she shouldn't have to do any of that since nothing is happening between them. I said I know that but I don't really want it to get to the point where he tries anything with her. She accused me of not trusting her which I told her was not true. She told me to keep out of it and that I was out of order for telling her how to act around a colleague.
AIW for voicing my concerns about my girlfriends colleague?

2024.05.19 13:27 ThrowRALostPoint I 27M having trouble understanding GF 25F stance on relationship, need context?

So I (27M) started dating a girl (25F), and we have agreed that we have been exclusive for around 1 month. It is a weird dynamic because it seems like she doesn't text or call much, and isn't that interested, which makes me anxious some days as I always think she is either upset with me, or just ignoring me, or she just doesn't text or call much in general. We generally have a text conversation maybe once a day or every 2 days, and call maybe once or twice a week, but nothing that lasts more than 15-20mins. We will see each other once a week, or every 10 days on average.
Now she does go on her phone abit texting other people, none of which I am overly concerned about, and I see her active on Instagram a fair bit, but it seems she never initiates text with me if we go a couple hours, even sometimes a whole day, not texting, then it's usually me giving in and saying something about how was her day.
She's never had a partner before, and hasn't really had much to do with guys. She has trauma of cheaters in her family (parents), which is why she said to me in the beginning that she wants to take it slow and not put labels on us, which is fine, but agreed we are exclusively dating. But as of yet no sex, only kissing and cuddling.
Now given all of this, she already invited me over for dinner with her whole family 3 weeks in, and she is organised to come visit my family soon.
So I don't know if it's just me expecting too much communication, or if she isn't much of a texter... But surely asking for atleast a check-up during the day isn't too much to ask for?
When we are together in person everything is fine, but it feels like when we're apart, I'm being neglected or I am just there for her attention when she wants it. I have asked her about it all and she usually gets awkward and shy and says she doesn't text much to anyone and that I'm an accessory to her life as she is really busy, but she always has her phone with her, and she is always texting her other friends and family members, so I find it hard to believe she can't text me a lot.
I need some context here whether I am in the wrong or not?
TLDR: I've been dating a girl for about a month, and while she doesn't text much, she has introduced me to her family and is planning to meet mine. I feel anxious when she doesn't initiate contact, though she claims she's not much of a texter. I'm trying to balance my need for communication with her style and past experiences.

2024.05.19 13:20 DawnShakhar Professor is impossible, we block him from controlling the curriculum.

This is more retribution than revenge, but it's still...
When I was studying for an M.A. in Psychology, we had to take one of two courses: advanced statistics (conventional statistics, boring as boring can be) or a course in a kind of alternate analysis. The second course was given by a professor who had developed a brilliant method for tabulating variables and defining predicted relationships between them and I chose his course. Wrong move. While the guy was brilliant, he was also megalomanic and nasty. He spent most of the lectures badmouthing conventional statistics and rarely taught anything. His T.A. weren’t very good at answering questions, and writing papers for the course was a nightmare.
One of the things the professor was hung up on was language – he had invented terms for the elements of his theory (some of them were invented words, some of them were common words that he gave new meanings) and insisted on using them - and woe betide any student who tried to use his/her own words to explain the concepts! During one lecture, he spouted a sentence full of his terms – common words but with his meaning – and most of the class didn’t understand what on earth he meant. (Incidentally, I was one of the few who did understand). A student raised his hand, said he didn’t understand and asked the lecturer to repeat it. The professor repeated what he had said word for word. Ths student said he still didn’t understand. The Professor barked out: “do you know what X means? Do you know what Y means?” etc (X and Y being the words he used). The student said “I understand each word, but I still don’t understand the sentence, could you explain it in other words?” The professor exploded: “These are scientific terms, there are no other words”. I raised my hand, he called me (his mistake) and I said: “Excuse me, but this course is required for M.A. students of Psychology and Sociology. The students here are M.A. students of Psychology and Sociology. If most of us don’t understand, there must be another way to explain it”. The Professor turned DARK PURPLE – I thought he was having a heart attack - but he went to the blackboard, drew a sketch and explained and everyone understood.
By the end of the year, I failed the course. Not that I didn’t understand – but I insisted on using my own words, and that was unacceptable. Next year I took the conventional statistics course.
After that year when I failed, I went to the head of the Psychology department, and reported. I said that it was unacceptable that a required course was one that was given so badly, and graded so unfairly. He asked me to interview other students about the course and write him a report – it could be anonymous. Some students were afraid to express their concerns (he was very powerful at the University) but I got a long list of complaints, and wrote a detailed report – problems with the course, problems with the T.A., problems with the assignments. And I signed it and handed it in.
Two other students were braver than me. They wrote an open letter: “If you want to be insulted all year. If you want to hear one gospel from the teacher and the opposite one from the T.A. etc. etc. This course is for you!”
And they signed it, and hung it up on the bulletin board. Other students added their signatures and endorsements.
Well - the course wasn’t removed. But I found out that the professor had insisted on his course being made compulsory for all Psychology students, and with his clout at the university he would have succeeded. However, due to our protests, his demand was blocked. At least half a win.
By the way, his method was BRILLIANT! I used it countless times over my years working in research support, and even consulted with him. He either didn't know or didn't remember that I had snitched on him...
