Stolen fire pick up, someone somewhere swinging knives, two different shootings, a break in, and a kid that was shot 😰

Security guard's patrol found sexual assault taking place in office building, police report - Cambridge Day
Cambridge police are investigating a reported sexual assault that occurred Friday at around 9:18 p.m. in a Cambridgepark Drive office building. The alert was put out Saturday afternoon.
Police responded to reports of an assault in progress from a Security Guard doing a regular patrol of the building. He said he heard screams from a floor that is under construction and is supposed to be empty, according to scanner reports. The victim may have worked on a nearby floor, where detectives were processing a restroom crime scene and working with Massachusetts State Police to identify and search for a suspect.
The victim told officers the assailant was a masked man with a knife.
The Middlesex District Attorneys Office has been notified, police said.

[First] [Prev] [Next]
Memory transcription subject: Governor Maulo of the Venlil Republic
Date [Standardized human time]: September 1st, 2148
[Day 25]
I couldn’t help but smile reading the police report. 120 yotul personnel were saved from Humanity First by an arxur of all things. It felt surreal to congratulate a gray on his heroic efforts, but I see now why President Mesu personally requested him. Aaron Clemont and two accomplices were confirmed dead, and using his holopad found at the scene we’ve begun tracking down other bases of operation.
I slid away the report, satisfied with the terrorists’ timely demises, and turned to an email from Mesu.
Dear Governor,
The experimental procedures to synthesize a vaccine of modified human immune cells was a rousing success in our first subjects. Dr. Silvon, as well as the infected personnel who were evacuated from the laboratory, have made miraculous near-overnight recoveries. They’re still far from cured, but we believe they will be healthy again in no time. Servaen has been forwarded a full report on the matter. It’s been a pleasure working paw-in-paw with you.
Ah, even better news. The research has finally yielded actual results. I’ll want to get this new vaccine rolled out as soon as possible, but I know the Sapient Coalition is not going to be happy that we went behind their back. I considered for a moment the likelihood of being impeached and swiftly decided my species’ salvation was far more important than my job. A notification pinged into my inbox, interrupting my thoughts. Speak of the devil.
Governor Maulo of the Venlil Republic, you are under suspicion of violating the Interstellar Species Rights Act of 2137, article 12, section 3: “Genetic modification, enhancement, or crippling of an individual and/or species without unanimous agreement among all representatives of the Sapient Coalition is to be considered a crime against sapience and heavily punished.” You are expected to attend a trial in the Interstellar Crimes Court on Saturday, September 6th, 2148 (HST). Failure to appear for the court hearing is automatic grounds for impeachment from your position as governor, and imprisonment.
Signed, Abdul Suresh, United Nations Secretary-General
“Fuck.”
“Governor?” Servaen knocked as he entered. “We’ve fully secured Ransu City, and as we speak several Humanity First headquarters are being raided by peacekeepers.”
I shook my head, expelling the feeling of impending doom before replying, “Good. Keep me updated on the situation. Let’s get these terrorists crushed before they can cause any more trouble.”

[Day 25]
Through the windows of the assumed abandoned office building, we could see slight movement. The glass was tinted with grime, giving our snipers a tough time to discern bodies, so the ground team and I strapped up and got into position in front of the boarded-up entrance.
“Stand back,” Captain Harrison called, gripping the battering ram. I lowered the visor on my helmet, and the world shifted from stormy and dark, to bright as day with impeccable clarity. Two women tore the boards off the door with crowbars, then moved back to allow Harrison to start breaking it down.
I counted the impacts mentally. 1. 2. 3. 4- the door fell apart inward and we rushed forward. I scanned the room quickly, keeping my rifle trained wherever I glanced. “First room clear. Alpha team, move down the hallway to our right. Beta team, the left. Gamma stay put and make sure nobody slips past,” the captain’s voice crackled in my helmet’s headset. I followed my cohort to the right, which was a winding hallway that was supposed to wrap around the full diameter of the building, with a row of doors along the curved wall into the center of the dome-shaped office.
I kicked in the first door. There was a shuffle on the other side, a chair slid across the room and I immediately locked my gun on it. “D-don’t shoot!” a meek voice reverberated from where the chair came from. A human slowly stood, arms raised. He had a ring on his finger.
“Walk toward me slowly, hands raised, and don’t try anything,” I barked. A couple of other soldiers marched in, guns raised to make sure he didn’t try anything funny. When he was halfway across the room, he grabbed his waistband. I was quick enough to fire off a few shots, and his body crumpled to the floor. I searched around, checking under desks to ensure there weren’t any more, before finally declaring “First room clear, moving out.”
We pushed onward. “Second room clear,” “Third room clear,” all soon enough began crackling in my headset. We were now approaching the main office in the center of the building. We cleared another couple of storerooms and break rooms before meeting back with the Beta team at the back of the loop.
“Only 3 confirmed casualties,” Captain Harrison stated, “out of an estimated 50 potential terrorists in the building. If they’re anywhere, they’re gonna be in here.”
Our combined teams were now 30-strong. We’d be outnumbered if we weren’t armed better. The door to the office was hardly reinforced. Some hastily-implemented wood boards fell away quickly with the battering ram. Next thing we knew, we were charging into the heart of the dome.
Being the only entrance, we should’ve known they’d put most of their efforts into protecting it. The second that door opened there was gunfire. I knew by the sounds that they were just 9mm handguns. We ducked at the entrance, firing into the room where the Humanity First members were cowering behind overturned tables.
“Their cover isn’t bulletproof, aim for the tables,” I yelled.
We focused our fire, shredding them through the flimsy ‘protection’. Soon we cleared a path, and a couple of brave terrorists moved in to replace their fallen comrades, only to meet the exact same fate. I fired off a shot clean through the head of one, then hastily reloaded my rifle as the rest of the team moved through.
From behind a desk immediately out of our view jumped a human who blew apart a peacekeeper with a shotgun blast to the face, though he was very quickly dealt with.
The office was rows upon rows of dividers and workstations. The barriers looked about as flimsy as the desks, so we began firing through. We were ordered specifically that eliminating the organization is more important than taking them in. Despite my reservations about those orders, I fired through the walls anyway.
Anyone that dared even try to fire back was given a lead filling. I marched down along the rows, peering into workspaces to gauge the outcome of our massacre. Every station had at least two shredded corpses. I had the displeasure of finishing off a couple. One was quick enough to get a shot at me, the bullet hit my chest and knocked the wind out of me, and the assailant was shot down by another peacekeeper.
For another 6 hours, we swept the halls and rooms over and over, checking crawl spaces and vents. We concluded, at long last, that the headquarters was empty. We were among tens of simultaneous raids across the planet to wipe the Humanity First scourge out for good, and I was happy to report back home at the end of the day.

[Day 25]
“Ooh, that one looks good on you,” Nuri chirped as I examined the dark purple jacket in the dressing room mirror. The marsupial insisted I try on just about every hoodie they had in the store, despite my distaste for a majority of them. The one I wore now was insulated with fluff that trapped body heat exceptionally well, keeping me nice and toasty.
“I supposed,” I muttered, putting my hands in my front pockets. I put the hood over my head and yanked the drawstrings.
“Look at that, you can still be all moody in it,” the yotul giggled.
“I’m really going to miss the old one though,” I replied, taking off the article and setting it in the stack with the others. I involuntarily grimaced at my visage in the mirror. I was shirtless, showing off my ribcage that poked out beneath my scales, and the skin that barely clung to my bones. The glimmer of the metal was more extreme around the 6 new dents on my body from the bullets. I wrapped my arms around myself shivering.
“Hey,” Nuri spoke, “How about this one?” she held a folded black hoodie similar enough to my old one, with a lighter gray for highlights that streaked down the arms from the hood. I ran a claw along the inside before slipping into it. It was snug, I almost didn’t notice it wasn’t made for an arxur.
“Where’d you find this one?”
“The human section.”
“We weren’t looking there to begin with?”
The marsupial shrugged. “Do you like it?”
It was baggy enough to make me look bulkier, exactly what I wanted out of a jacket. “I love it,” I concluded. Nuri smiled, taking me by the arm to the checkout. The yotul manning it had been keeping a very close eye on me the entire time I was in the story. Poor guy.
“Th-that’ll be 15 credits,” he mumbled, scanning the hoodie and passing Nuri the chip scanner.
Before she could pay for it, I managed to slip my credit chip into the device. I was getting better at beating the overzealous marsupial to the punch! “Hey! I told you I was paying!”
“I don’t think so,” I shook my head and slid the chip into my new hoodie’s pocket and put it on.
We exited the store, the midday air was warm and humid. I never cared for moisture, so I was glad to retreat into Nuri’s car. She punched in her home address and we cruised past the historic town square.
“Y’know, I’ve been thinking a bit,” I stated.
“That’s new,” Nuri remarked.
“Y’know, I don’t have to tell you about it.”
“Okay, okay, my bad,” she smiled. “What’s on your mind, Jaki?”
“When I first got here, I got to have a chat with Mesu. I tried to make it very clear I was only here for work, not to make friends.”
“Well good going,” Nuri giggled.
“Yeah,” I mused, “I guess that fell through. But I’m not too confident I’d be allowed citizenship on Leirn, as much as I want it.”
The yotul cocked her head, “They’d be fools not to let you stay,” she said. “Besides, you clearly haven’t been keeping up with the news lately.”
“Wait, what do you mean?” She popped open the car’s center console and withdrew her holopad. It opened to a news site with big, bold words that my translator got to work deciphering. “Hero arxur saves over a hundred in terrorist attack… I thought you weren’t going to put me in the news.”
“I said I wasn’t going to use our friendship as an easy promotion. This is a lot different,” the marsupial scrolled down to a photograph of me taken when we hit the bar right after. I had bullet holes in my hoodie and a drink in my hand.
“Hero arxur…” I murmured, “hell of an oxymoron.”
She smacked my arm with her paw, forgetting how hard my scales were, then waved it in pain. “Aw! Shit!”
“Oh don’t hurt yourself,” I grinned.
“Don’t rag on yourself either,” she retorted, “You deserve way more respect than I can put into the news. I hope this at least means you’ll get less shit out on the streets.”
The car began slowing down in front of her house, which was quickly becoming my home too. I haven’t even stepped foot in that hotel Mesu got me in a good few days. We got inside and I flopped down on the couch immediately, the comfortable cushions were inviting after a long day of shopping.
“So, when are you going back to work?” Nuri asked, sitting down next to me.
“Eh, I don’t know. Whenever the lab is considered ‘safe’ again. They outsourced the vaccine’s development to some place in Olsa.”
“Aw, that sucks.”
“Nah, not even. Just means I got more time to hang out with you,” I smiled.
“Yeah, I guess that’s true. Well, I’m gonna order dinner. You want anything in particular?”
“Hmmm… maybe harchen,” I growled.
“Shut the fuck up,” the marsupial laughed.
~~~
I woke up to the sound of my holopad buzzing. The house was silent, and the time was 2 am. I rubbed sleep from my eyes and yawned before the contact ID instantly awakened me. I got up from the couch, careful not to step on Nuri who was soundly asleep curled up in blankets on the floor.
I slipped into the bathroom and hit answer. “President Mesu,” I exclaimed surprised.
“Jakiv,” he began cordially, “Congratulations on your research, and for making the news.”
“I- uh, thank you,” I responded awkwardly.
“Once everything with the vaccine is said and done, you’re set to leave Leirn on the 8th,” the yotul stated.
“Oh,” I couldn’t hide the disappointment in my voice, “I actually… can we talk a bit about that?”
“Sure,” he replied.
“Well, I know I said I didn’t come here to make friends, and I certainly didn’t come here to save lives, but I-” I quickly glanced at the bathroom door. I couldn’t hear anything outside it, and prayed Nuri was still asleep, “I met someone here that I don’t think I can live without. She’s my best friend- my only friend, and I really want to stay. For her,” I breathed.
“You… want to stay on Leirn?” he asked incredulously. I nodded. He scratched his furry chin for a second, I worried he was set on sending me away regardless, but then, “Okay. I’ll forward you the immigration forms.”
“You will?” I gasped.
“Of course. You’ve done Leirn and Skalga a great deal of service. I’m honored you’ve found a home here, Jakiv.”
“Thank you so much, Mesu!” I felt myself getting teary-eyed.
The marsupial nodded, “Thank you. Now then, you look tired. Go get some rest,” his visage flickered and dematerialized. I was left in the bathroom alone. I looked myself in the mirror and smiled at the form reflected back at me.
I opened the door and-
“Nuri!” I cried, startled. She wordlessly wrapped her arms around me. I reciprocated, putting mine around her and relishing the moment.
“I’m so happy for you,” she whispered.
“Thanks,” I smiled, “I did it for you.”
2024.05.18 10:12 Professional_Prune11 Escape From Heavalun Section One: Devil With Metal Skin
He hoi me noi my buds. It is your baker man Pirate here. With Human Trauma book two coming to a close in the next week, I wanted to shre with you all the next planned novel I am working on. This time around we will have a stuborn human mercanary, a lizard princess, and one goal---escape Heavalun Mass city. all thats in thier way is corrupt cops, gangsters, the general populace and thier willingness to tolarate one another.
Lets get this Bread.
Shooting up from the blankets, Conor grabbed hold of the neck of whoever was jostling him awake, his cybernetic arm whirring while activating. Suddenly touching someone asleep was a stupid idea to do to anyone from Heavalun. Any sentient from this city was on edge most of the time and was usually particularly ornery when waking up.
He was especially prickly after years of contract killing and near-nonstop battles. While most people from Heavalun Mass City were used to fighting or having to keep an eye over their shoulder, watching for gangers, junkies, pickpockets, or the local police, his experience working and living here made him like a rubber band, ready to snap. Be that a neck, arm, leg, or whatever the poor sod he was fighting had.
“Who the fuck do you think you are,” Conor snarled, his natural and cybernetic eye narrowing and focusing in the wan light of his drab bedroom.
In an action built into him like an instinct, he willed his cybernetic eye to switch to see in infrared thermal sight, letting him get a good look at whoever this was while his natural eye adjusted to the lighting.
In bright orange, reds, and whites, Jurilra's face came into focus. She was a Jurintik, a werewolf like species; while he was human through and through. She had dull brown fur, long, dirty blonde hair, and a gaunt face and frame. The Jurintik was an alien species widespread throughout the galaxy, be it in the GU(galactic Union), Freespace, or here deep in the COS (concord of systems); you can’t swing a pipe without hitting at least two of them.
“Conor—let—-go,” Julitra gagged, clutching at Conor’s cybernetic forearm, her claws scratching roughly at the overlapping metal plates. “It’s me.”
Realizing who it was, Conor let her neck go, and she fell to the ground. He had only lifted her several centimeters off the floor, but doing that when half your torso, including your shoulders, one arm, and most of your organs were non-organic, or at least cybernetically enhanced, was a simple task, and he had done so out of sheer reflex.
“What were you thinking waking me up like that? You’re lucky I didn’t just dust you with my hand cannon,” Conor said, gesturing to the massive handgun sitting on the bedside table. “What in the stars are you doing here anyway?”
Taking a moment to rub at her neck and gag for a moment, Conor pieced together what likely happened. Considering that Julitra was naked, save for a thong, he must have hired her last night to blow off some steam—it wouldn’t be the first time he had done that when drunk.
“You didn’t pay me for last night,” Julitra said, standing up and nervously scratching her furry forearms and looking deeper into the shithole of an apartment toward the room where Conor stored all his weapons, money, and other precious items for barter or fencing purposes.
Conor sighed and scratched behind his still intact ear, the other having been halfway taken off by a frag grenade a few local years ago. After taking a moment to swing his legs out of bed, flexing his sore muscles, and rubbing his palms on his thighs, he looked up at her, having deactivated the thermal vision in his eye. “Fine; in the room top drawer on the right, you will find some bags of Murt and Syntrit. Take one of each.”
“Alright,” Julitra said, turning around and sashaying in that direction, clearly doing her best to move suavely and gracefully.
But Conor knew that was a load of Kret shit; She was little more than a strung-out junkie who just managed to keep herself on another fix fast enough by either guy like himself paying her for a quick lay or by managing not to get taken advantage of by one of the dealers on a street corner.
At least if she was selling herself for the night, she wasn’t going to end up in some slave market in the lower sections of the city or crammed into a skiff bound for a star on the far side of the galaxy. Julitra did have some kids to take care of, after all.
Not that it mattered to Conor if she went missing; there would be another skag he could bring in here. He just preferred her because she never tried to steal from him nor kill him in his sleep—finding another girl that he could trust would not be easy, especially in this shithole of a mass city. That well over a billion sentients were nestled in it did not matter; finding another piece of ass would be a pain.
“And only take one. I know how much product I have,” Conor grumbled, standing and heading toward the kitchenette. The dirty, blood-stained carpet was uncomfortable under bare feet.
God he hated going around with bare feet. It paid to have good boots to keep your feet safe from glass, nails, and other debris. That was especially important when operating in urban areas.
When he was out in the countryside or the house, he would forgo wearing them, and switch to sneekers, but being bare foot still sucked.
“I know,” Julitra replied from the room, “can I use your shower?”
“Whatever,” Conor replied flippantly, pulling down dried stulk leaves and tossing a pot of water on the stove.
So long as she didn't cause any issues with him getting started for the day, he honestly could not care less. All he needed to start the day was a pipping hot cup of stulk, and his stims. On that subject, the datapad built into his artificial arm chimed and reminded him of just that.
He frowned while retrieving the volatile cocktail of stimulants from the cupboard. He was almost out and only had enough for three days. Inside were six small autoinjectors about 20 centimeters long, marked with several warnings indicating that they should only be used in dire combat situations. But he was a particularly unique case and needed them just to survive.
After having a solid forty percent of his body replaced with cybernetics, from a metallic jaw, fake eye, a few replaced organs, torso, numerous enhanced joints, and even a few bits of wire running through his brain, the stims kept him working.
Without his friend Stich’s unique stimulant blend twice a day, Conor would start to fall apart. First would come the tremors, then body lockup, followed by seizures and eventually death. He had never made it that far in relapse; it was just easier to keep his organic parts cranked up to keep pace with his enhanced parts, and the video Stich showed him of sentients who relapsed was a good dissuasion.
Those poor sods were mangled wrecks, limbs at unnatural angles, blood, hydraulic fluid, and bone everywhere. And they were at most twenty percent wired up—what he could end up like was something he would rather not learn.
Dutifully and like clockwork, Conor ripped the cap off an auto-injector and shoved it into his thigh; a dull hiss sounded out as the brackish fluid flowed into his muscles. Just as he tossed the now empty injector into the trashcan, the sounds of Julitra starting the shower and humming flowed into the joint living and bedroom.
While Julitra was showering, Conor's friend and coworker Brakul sent him a message.
Brakul: Hey, conor, what are you doing tonight? I think I might have a contract for us to pick up.
Conor: No plans at this point. I just gotta get Julitra out of my safe house.
Brakul: Are you still fucking that scag? You know that won’t end well.
Conor: Yeah, gotta get my dick wet somehow. Besides, aren’t you still plowing that Kurilta we worked with a few months back—the one with the red hair?
Brakul: Yeah, I am. I like the crazy little woman. Plus, she is only a meter tall and makes me feel massive. But are you in or not?
Conor: Yeah, I'm in. When, where, and who is the client?
Brakul: Perfect, meet me at Zyntle’s around 2100. If all goes well, we got a contract for some new upstart to the north out of town. He is looking to hire some muscle for a few months. Don't worry about the contract's legitimacy; Norla sent this man my way to arrange half a dozen bodies. I just want you there in case something goes down.
Conor: So, bring a few extra solutions?
Brakul: if you would, and keep ‘em quiet, no shotguns. We will be in Zynie's place and need to keep things civil.
Conor: Afirm, see you then.
After switching off the arm-mounted datapad, Julitra stepped back into the room, redressed in her clothes from the previous night. They weren't anything fancy by any stretch of the imagination. Just a simple lowcut dress, showing off a shallow valley of furry cleavage, and cut to give ample view up her thighs and see the thong barely covering her womanhood.
For a hooker, it was good enough.
“Want to have some stulk?” Conor questioned, pouring himself a glass.
“Sure,” Julitra replied, going and lounging at the dingy table in the corner of the room.
They were quiet while eating their meager breakfast; neither had much in common or to talk about as is. The only things Julitra knew about Conor were: he killed people for money, sold stolen goods, and could give her a mean dick down. Whereas Conor knew damn near everything about her, acquired through basic profiling of her actions, attire, and mannerisms or from some of the intelligence brokers he dealt with regularly.
Some friends called him paranoid for keeping such tight tabs on anyone he dealt with; at least Brakul and Stich did. But Conor knew that knowledge was power and was needed if you wanted to always end up with your opponent dusted and not you. Conor knew better than anyone that you don’t survive like he has without a bit of paranoia. Hell, he was more persistent than a Hureclian beetle seeking water.
Once they had finished scarfing down crackers, canned meat, and the bitter, brackish brew, Julitra quickly took her leave, with Conor locking the door behind her. First, the deadbolts, then the chain, followed by a biometric scanner, and lastly, he kicked a metal wedge underneath the door—it would take a whole breaching team from the local government a solid hour to breach that reinforced metal monstrosity, and that was just how Conor liked it.
Unless you were invited into his home, it would behoove you to stay out and not try to get in.
Now that he was alone again, Conor trundled into the room Julitra had gotten her payment from and opened up one of the massive ceiling-high safes lining the walls. Inside was some of his equipment. This specific one contained most of his low-visibility equipment: body armor, weapons, knives, toolkits, and anything else he might need for more subtle operations.
In the other safes were other tools he might want, but those kits were built for more specific jobs: sniping, heavy assaults, aerial and maritime operations, along with anything else he could use in a warzone, but most of that was overkill for tonight.
So Conor pulled out a few items he thought could be useful and started his preparations in such meticulous detail that it would take him the rest of the day.
—-
The area outside of Zyntle’s nightclub was insanely crowded, even for Heavalun standards. Up and down the street, as far as the eye could see, were nightclubs, bars, and restaurants, catering to whatever vice once could possibly want.
Unlike some of the out portions of the city, areas in the inner and lower regions like here, you could not see the sky. Instead, if one looked up, they would be met with obnoxious neon signs and more buildings arching overhead, choking out any star or sunlight that might be visible.
Aiding in the choking and oppressive atmosphere, Aliens of all shapes and sizes bumped into one another with little grace, care, or concern. Most were decked out head to toe in bright neon colors that melded together in a caleidoscope of shifting brilliance.
At least that gave the usual drab greys, rust reds, and browns of the cityscape some color, even if Conor usually found it more annoying than not. Thankfully, neither Conor, Brakul, nor their strange contact could not hear the crowd outside from the second-floor window. Instead, they were being bombarded by something as if not more grating.
The happy tones and idle conversations of the crowd on the dancefloor below them, along with repetitive keyboards, synthetic snapping basslines, and ethereal vocals, filled the air to a near-deafening level. If not for the three of them having wired up to a local chatterbox that Conor brought along, they would not be able to hear one another.
The chatterbox was not fancy; it was just a tiny device Conor had whipped up. That lets them speak normally into microphones on their collars and be heard in earpieces. He had devised the idea for it after a few skiff airborne operations, where unless you were jacked into the aircraft comms, you could not talk without screaming.
Now, the chatterbox just doubled as the perfect tool for having conversations you would rather not have others around listen into. Hell, unless you were inches from them, you would not be able to hear them at all.
Brakul and whomever this Farun’se was, a two-meter tall feline-like alien, had been going over the finer details of the contract for the last half hour. Conor had been listening just enough to keep in the loop, but his focus was elsewhere. Namely in the crowds around them, watching for anything he did not want to see: other contractors, a gang war about to erupt, or anything else that caught his eye. People-watching was one of the things Conor enjoyed about setting up jobs; it gave him plenty of time to keep tabs on the ever-shifting city.
He had not spotted anything yet, in regular vision, Thermal, or through tracking, but something was off—he could feel it in his hackles. As such, One of Conor's hands was in his somewhat oversized brown leather jacket, wrapped tightly around the grip of his suppressed handgun. Neither Brakul nor the Client commented on him keeping watch; they both knew he was just filling the role of an enforcer and was backup for them.
“So, what do you think about the contract?” The Farun’se man questioned before taking a sip from his drink.
Whatever that glowing drink was, it was not ethanol-based; the smell was far too sweet. Conor could tell that much even through the skull-like mask covering his face. Not that the flat black ballistic bask he wore to cover his metallic jaw and mangled face covered scents much. It was built much like the other equipment he wore to enhance his senses, not diminish them.
“I think it is perfectly acceptable. But are you certain you only want a ten-man team to provide escort and transport for your client while within the city?” Brakul asked, flipping a palm up. “I am certain I can get more, considering your daily generous payment offer.”
Generous was one way to put it. The politician the Farun’se represented offered a whopping 15 thousand crit a day for well-experienced mercs. It was enough to get Conor's tail wagging; Most jobs barely pay that out, and this contract was supposed to be ten days long. You could almost buy a house outside the city for that kind of crit. If they were actually paid it out and not betrayed by their employer, at the end of the day, Conor likely would do just that; then, he would have a place to live without the threat of death around every corner.
Each of his jobs over the last few years was a means to that end—escaping this shithole. But getting out of the city was difficult, even for guys like him with opportunities to leave and a reasonably regular income.
“Well, we can work that out via messaging, but for now, I am just offering what I am allowed to,” The client said. “Anything more than that, and I won't be able to pay you half upfront.”
At least they are offering half the credits upfront. Conor must have missed that part during their long-winded discussion about what type of experience each mercenary needed, what weapons they would be allowed, and the specifics of the contract.
All they would have to do was finalize details of the team when Brakul had assembled another eight bodies, but they could do that in a few weeks.
“If that’s the case, then I think we should be good for now,” Brakul said, standing and extending a hand for the client.
“Perfect, expect to hear from me in a few days. Please have your team prepared by the end of the week,” The client replied, shaking Brakul’s hand.
After removing his earpiece and microphone, the client nodded to Conor and disappeared into the crowd looming around the stairs leading to the ground floor.
“So you like the sounds of that?” Brakul asked, sitting back down and sipping at his drink.
Keeping his sight on the crowd below, Conor tracked the client as he struggled to weave through the jostling dancers. The Feline was clearly out of his element in the crowds of the mass city. Based on how quickly he was recoiling from each touch by the intoxicated patrons, he was uncomfortable with all the physical contact forced onto him.
The sight was almost comedic, but Conor was used to dealing with people like the client's representative. If you had enough crit to hire ten mercs, you came from one of two walks of life: you were an influential underground leader who could afford the extra muscle, or you were a sheltered individual with no real business in Heavalun Mass City but decided you wanted to make some friends in low places and needed locals who would be loyal to the almighty crit.
But all of that was neither here nor there for the time being; Brakul would handle any issues with the contract. He was far better at being a politician than Conor was.
“So, any issues with what he wants?” Brakul smirked, knowing that it had been several months since Conor's last contract and that he needed the money.
Conor passively waved at his friend; he did not need to comment. Conor would take any contract that came his way so long as the pay was solid enough. In the past, he had taken contracts Brakul refused for moral reasons.
This contract of defending some high-born trader was in no way out of the ordinary and was relatively tame by Conor’s standards. His last contract was far more low-brow enough that he had almost said no. But for the low, low cost of 100 thousand crits and the fancy nanotech armor he was wearing under his tank top, he was more than willing to blow up the wing of a hospital with a firebomb—insurance paid to fix the building and burry anyone caught up when he killed a lowborn noble or some distant planet.
“I’m more interested in what's going on down below,” Conor said, pointing to a group gathering near the club's back entrance.
Below, barely visible through the flashing strobe lights and low haze of fog machines, seven Kyrail lingered at the back doors. One of the amphibian-like bipeds was giving instructions to the others. It was a shame the music was so loud; if not, Conor and Brakul could easily hear them, but even without sound, it was easy to see what they were doing. They were scouting a mark.
“What do you think, Voodals gang?” Conor posed, scanning the crowd for whomever the lead croaker was trying to target.
Voodal is a leader of one of the area's crime families and merc groups. They had been competitors of Conor and Brakul and their usual hiring groups for a long time. While Brakul and Conor did not have beef with them, one of their usual employers, the Farklut clan, had generations of bad blood.
That rivalry was nasty, to the point anyone who was a direct member of either family would dust the other on sight. Both had been caught up in that rivalry several times and had a negative opinion of the Voodal family and any of their ilk.
“Likely. This is part of a contested city, after all,” Brakul replied, sipping his drink.
“I wonder what they are doing here?” Conor said, still not having located whatever it was they were doing, but he had seen them pull out a particularly nasty drug, giving him an idea of precisely what they planned on doing—abduction.
The gaggle’s leader had passed out plastic bags with what looked like Visage clinging to the bags. That drug might as well be chloroform on the strongest combat stim out there. It would put you in a trance and make you forget the next several days until the effects wore off. The perfect drug for slave traffickers and abductors.
The only reason Conor could tell was that he had used the tactic several times to capture targets alive. It was great; you could fish information from them freely, and they wouldn't remember anything beyond where they had been picked up and whenever the drug wore off.
“I see their target,” Brakul muttered, “switch to IR. I will laze her for yah.”
As his friend and partner told him, Conor switched his false eye to IR and watched, and Brakul’s pistols laser pierced the crowd and danced on the back of a red scalled Kurlatra, dancing happily with some other repltilians of her species. All were woefully ignorant of the Kyrail weaving through the crowd toward them, hands tucked into jackets, likely clutching knives, pistols, and bags of drugs.
“Hmmm, odd, not a lot of Kurlatra on this side of the GU borders,” Conor commented.
“For sure,” Brakul agreed.
Kurlatra were a noble-esc species in the GU and tended to stay in the GU, as opposed ot the COS; most here only cared about their nobility for the sake of making money on ransom after all.
The GU was safe but was overbearing compared to the COS. It had far more laws, restrictions, and limitations on carving out a living. Conor’s chosen profession of being a Mercenary was outlawed in the GU unless you were on the Union congress's payroll, But he was not on that list, despite trying a few times.
“Wanna toss a wrench in their plans?” Brakul questioned.
“How so?” Conor replied, keeping a keen eye on the crimson scalled in the center.
Compared to those around her, she was different. Unlike the others who wore simple clothes, she wore a very revealing yellow dress that was low cut in the back and front, showing offer cleavage, but that's not what made her so different. It was all the glistening jewelry that made her smell of crit.
All those stones and precious metals were likely worth a few hundred thousand crits on their own. That was before you sold her pert ass to some slaver.
“We can go down, nab her after the entourage is dealt with, and be big damn heroes. Then we get an award from that payday of a ruby. If she is not feeling up to it, we could ransom her off to the Voodal; they want her for some reason,” Brakul explained, using his keen eye for diplomacy and deals to guide Conor’s mind to the potential payout.
Conor took a moment to take stock of the situation; he had enough ammo to carve through the Voodal family present and could carry such a Kurlatra if needed. Should this shit go sideways and end up in a firefight, they could just use the crowd and vanish.
“What about the contract we just took,” Conor posed
“We haven't taken one yet,” Brakul reminded, “that rep needs to get back to us with upfront payment. Until then, we are freelance.”
Conor could not deny he was right; no crit had changed hands yet, they were still unemployed, and this bitch might be worth some cash. Before Conor had a chance even to comment one way or the other, Brakul pressed on a nerve he knew would get Conor to act.
“Come on. I got fifty crit that says you can't extract that Kurlatra before the Voodal drug her,” the fellow Jurintik mocked.
The bastard knew how to get to Conor for sure. He was competitive and hated to have his abilities brought into question. Just out of professional pride, Conor could not let that lay.
“Two hundred,” Conor countered.
“One hundred,” Brakul retorted, “oh, look, they already nabbed one of the entourage.”
He was right. One of the Kurlatra heading toward the bathrooms near the back entrance just had a bag of Visage slammed into their mouth and had already gone glassy-eyed. Now, there were only five Kurlatra left, including the clear HVT(High-Value Target)
“One fifty,” Conor snapped, eager to have his friend stop messing with him.
“Deal, I will cover and feed you intel from her. Open channel one,” Brakul sneered.
Without missing a beat, Conor shot up from the table and descended the stairs into the crowd, drawing his suppressed pistol and activating his target tracker to keep sight of the HVT.
Conor did not know it yet, but that little bet, one that was not even worth as much ammo as he was about to expend, would send his life on a journey that would change him forever.
So what did you all think? was it a good time? a fun start at bare min? next chapter we will have connor dealing with the voodal, follwed by us meeting the little princess. It should be fun.
Please dont forget to updoot and comment. I will see you all in the comments.
2024.05.18 03:29 DreadMan-D I quit being a nightcrawler, and I need to tell someone why
More than a month ago, I quit being a nightcrawler in a city down south. It wasn't because I didn't like the job. It was pretty enjoyable. I didn't mind the late nights. I'm a night owl. Besides that, I'm somewhat of a degenerate that the crime scenes didn't affect me. I'm not bragging about that. It is what it is. But, ever since I ran from it, I can feel something slowly creeping back into my life. Something's changed. I've seen it at my new job. I don't want it to be this way, so maybe if I get it off my chest it will go away. Or maybe one of you here knows what I'm talking about. Let me explain.
For those who don't know, a nightcrawler is a term made popular by the Jake Gyllenhaal movie of the same name. The way I made money was by spending nights listening to the police scanners and waiting. When something went down: a murder, a car crash, you name it, I was the first one at the scene. I had to be. If I didn't get the shot, I didn't get paid. So, I was a first responder in a way, but my role was strictly observational. I did NOT get involved, and for good reason.
I'll spare you the details, but I've seen some pretty gruesome stuff. Nothing like New York or Los Angeles, but there was still a crime problem, and there was a lot of it. I was happy to make money as a young guy with no degree and no connections. I also felt like I was pretty good at it too. The local assignment editors would hit me up asking if I had anything new.
The night that ended my career was quiet. Like every evening, I was sitting on the hood of my 2015 Impala listening to the airwaves. I had made an abandoned mall parking lot my base of operations. It allowed me to focus. The scanner was tame. Chatter was a minimum between the dispatchers. Weekends could be slow, but I remember thinking it was odd how quiet it was. I hadn't shot anything all that week, and I was strapped for cash. The last thing I had sold was a head-on collision between two drivers. It hadn't been my most explicit shot, but it had gotten the job done. Still, I didn't get residuals if it played for consecutive nights.
I got off the hood of my car and began to pace. The silence was killing me. I couldn't sit still, and I knew if I did I would end up driving aimlessly around. I never did that since you never knew where an event would happen. The channels in my area were always reliable, but not this night. I needed to search for other channels.
Lots of static came through as I twisted the knob. I went end to end on the frequencies. I even tried to see if I could get the next county over, but there was nothing. It was looking like I was going to have to end the night. I hated going home before the sun was up, but what could I do? I knew if I was desperate I wouldn't get what I wanted, so I decided to call it.
As I approached the driver's door, a loud bang echoed through the night. I knew it was a gunshot. I'd heard them up close before. I waited a moment to see if there were any others. As soon as it went quiet, I flipped on the main police frequency.
"331 calling all units. 331 calling all units."
An all-unit call meant the shooting was of high importance. I thought it was strange since it was only the one gunshot fired, but what did I know?
"331 this is squad 271, over."
"271 possible 10-91 reported at Beverly and Overton, what's your status?"
10-91 confirmed the shooting. At the sound of that, I ripped open the driver's door and started the ignition. Beverly and Overton; it was close. Probably 15 minutes with the way I drive. My nocturnal business had helped me indicate which streets had red light cameras. I could be there in less than five minutes. I shut the scanner off and shifted into drive.
I arrived at the location to find it empty. There wasn't a soul in sight. Not unusual for this time of night or this part of town. I thought they might've misreported it, but I knew that wasn't the case.
I parked on the side of the road and prepared. I pulled out my camera, checked battery life, and white balanced. I began to survey the area panning from behind to front. Sometimes, I'm able to see better through the camera. I tend to pick up things easier whether I can zoom or brighten the view. As I came around the front, I finally saw it. My thumb instinctively hit record.
There was a body, about 10 yards in the distance. I hadn't seen it when I first arrived because it was in all black - a suit from what I could tell. It was lying halfway in the bushes on the sidewalk. As I held the shot on it, I watched the wind ruffle the fabric. I felt my free hand reach for the door handle but froze. The leg in the street stretched out.
It was alive. I'd never captured anything like this before. I just sat and let the camera roll. I'd get paid well for this one. I could see the dollar signs. The stations would eat it up. My mind fell into the bliss of finally having a paycheck again. I could feel my shoulders fall. I sank back into my car's cloth seats.
Bang! Bang! Bang! A fist hit against my door's window. I jumped and looked over. A woman, in a red dress and streaky makeup, was staring at me. She looked worn out like she'd run a marathon. Her voice was muffled as she kept screaming for me to turn the camera off. I didn't recognize I had it pointed at her. Old habits. At first, I didn't think to put it away, but then I noticed her gun. It wasn't aimed, but I lowered the camera. I rolled down my window to hear her better.
"I need your help!" she shouted.
"Cops are on the way," I said.
"You don't understand. They can't help."
"They can. Just let them do their job," I said. She gripped the snub-nosed revolver in her hand so tight her knuckles were white. I might have seemed a little too calm here, but this is just how I remember it. In the corner of my eye, the red light was still lit on the camera. It was going to be one helluva shot.
"He's not going to die from this," she said and waved the gun.
"Are you sure?"
"Unless you run him over."
I was speechless.
"Please," she said. Her voice softened. "I need you."
"W-what?"
"He's not a man. He's - something else."
Clearly, this woman was out of her mind. The two of them had probably gotten high on some pills or something, and now she was having a psychotic break. It sounded more plausible than the man being something else. I knew I had to keep calm and try my best to keep myself out of trouble.
"I think you should wait for the police," I said. I gently released the camera and let it fall into my crotch. I didn't make a move for the gear shifter, but I was preparing. It seemed like the barrel of the gun was coming my way.
"Please," she begged. "It can't live."
I should've driven off, but I didn't. I wished I could've helped her. For a moment, I thought about letting her sit in the car. But that thought died to my selfish need for survival. I wasn't getting involved. I couldn't break my rules.
"I'm sorry," I said. "I can't help you. I shouldn't even be here." I said. My hand crept to the gear shifter. My foot hovered over the gas pedal. Click. The woman raised the gun to my head.
"Get out," she demanded. I immediately raised my hands.
She came over to the door and pulled the handle. It was locked. I never unlocked my doors unless I was leaving the car. I'd been carjacked before. She tried to force it open, but it was not happening. I remained motionless.
"I will shoot you! I'm not afraid!" I watched as the barrel met my direct line of sight. The darkness was deep down the nozzle. I could see each of the bullets in their chambers and the one empty pocket. I understood that my miserable life could be ended right here. I would be shot by some random, unhinged woman. Seemed like a fitting end, but that was halted by flashing red and blue lights.
The woman turned to the police. I heard a shout while she raised her weapon. A barrage of gunfire was unleashed. Soon she was on the floor. Somehow my camera had made it back to my hand. I captured the whole thing.
The police rushed up to the woman and began assisting her. One shouted at me to see if I was okay, but I pointed at the body in the distance. I panned to see if he was still there, and he was. However, he was standing. He looked normal like he hadn't been shot, but there was something sinister on his face. I don't know if it was in his smile or his eyes, but the way he was staring at me - gave me the creeps. He knew I was watching, and he seemed happy I was. As we held each other's eyesight, his eyes flashed red. I'm not kidding, and It wasn't from the police lights. His eyes literally glowed bright red.
The cop banged my open window with his flashlight I looked over with the camera.
"Step out of the car!" He said. He was a heavy-set guy with a big beard. No gun was pulled, but he didn't look too happy.
"You have to help him." I pointed over to the man standing and smiling. The cop looked over. He looked back.
"Are you high? Get out of the car!"
You probably saw that one coming.
But still, imagine my shock when I panned over once more to find that the smiling man was gone. The area was empty. The cop opened my door from the inside.
The two officers interrogated me. They took my camera, searched my interior, and breathalyzed me. They weren't sure if I was a dealer or this woman's pimp. After telling them everything, and then checking the video, they sent me on my way home. They kept my camera obviously. On any other night, I would've been upset, but I knew this was my last.
The next week I moved. I surprisingly found a job as an archivist at a newsroom. It's simple and boring, but I operate the same hours as before. It's steady, which I'm thankful for, but it's gotten strange. Sometimes I'll see some footage that I thought was mine and it makes me chuckle. But I'm beginning to worry. I've been seeing the smiling man.
At first, I thought it was just hallucinations from the long hours. Nope. He's in all the videos. The cameramen don't notice him, but I do. He's at every crime scene and he's always smiling - always watching. I've done my best to not watch the videos because I can't stand to look at his face. One day coming home from work, I thought I saw him in my reflection. I'm beginning to believe the woman. He's not a person. He's something else.
2024.05.17 21:14 sanibba AITAH for getting back at my younger sister by snitching as she did (when I know she struggles mentally w/o being vocal about it)…
Short summary about the family dynamics: We are three sisters, I (F24) have an older sister (F26), and a younger sister (F20). Both me and my younger sister live at home with our mom and dad, while my older sister studies abroad. We’re a south-Asian family, quite liberal on some parts and quite cultural on other parts. Not very religious. Me and my older sister have developed a really good and close bond (used to fight a lot when we were younger and she used to snitch on me. She’s the best now, supports me on everything and especially this), while me and my younger sister have an ambivalent relationship. Sometimes she’s nice and sometimes she’s awful, she’s 100% a snitch and uses it to “blackmail”. I try my best to be open with her, talk to her, but at some point she shuts down. She’s rude to everyone, getting too offended, taking it as criticism or very personally when I give her feedback about her behavioquick change in behavior. At this point me and my older sister (who currently are finishing her MD), suspect some sort of borderline personality disorder or bipolar disorder, undiagnosed. It has been a topic, my younger sister has friends that have said the same things about her mood changes etc. and told me that herself.
So here’s the issue. Me and my younger sister had a fight because she left a lot of mess, dirty and molded dishes, garbage etc in our older sisters bedroom /tv-room and my older sister told me to tell her to leave the room because this is the second time she messes up her room and do not follow her “house rules” that is simply keeping the room clean after use. So it became a bit physical (she was a total bitch, only person on this planet that makes me see black, her attitude and everything. I’m not a violent person at all. I know I have it in me but I chose to control it and be soft but I started this one). I held her down on the couch while I tried to snatch the control out of her hand after I repeatedly asked her to give it to me. she was kicking me while I was over her. She tried to throw things at me (candles, chairs etc). Our mom and dad came running, I had my/our older sister on FT and our younger sister starts a whole shitshow about how I choked her. At first I thought maybe I held/pushed her down a bit too hard but then when I calmly ask how I choked her she told my parents that it was straight on the throat with my hand - a lie. I’m baffled and told them that’s not true, that’s not what happened. Usually my parents, especially my mom enables my younger sister A LOT, to a point where it’s frustrating. There’s no consequence, no punishment, compared to what me and my older sister got. My younger sister is a master at emotional manipulation and emotional blackmailing and comes away with a lot of shit through our mom, not so much our dad but sometimes. She’s not intelligent, she’s not smart, calculated, scheming etc. I think her brain just understands that she gets the outcome that she wants without understanding the damage/ reason. Anyways, she pulls this shitshow and nobody believes her. She starts crying and nobody believes her. This is a very strange and unfamiliar feeling for her, everyone said that the reason why all this happened was truly her fault for not keeping the room clean and ofc the situation didn’t need to be physical. She threatened to call the police, actually called the police and said that she wanted to report a case. At this point we were all shocked. She ends up telling the police never mind and hanged up. We try to talk it out and my mom demands me to apologize to her and I said I will not apologize for something I did not do, I can apologize for how I handled the situation by diving over her after the remote but that’s it. She passes me and say “you better watch out” this did not sit right with me and I got a bad vibe in my gut. I’m very intuitive and my gut feeling is very strong and never lies. We go to bed, and she keeps texting my mom telling her to get rid of me and that’s she’s scared to be in the same house as me, she’s scared to sleep and that I might choke her or k**l her. My mom tries to calm her down, telling her that sisters fight and sometimes it gets out of hand. Then she runs out of the house at 2 a.m in her robe and slippers and the situation gets chaotic. My dad drives after her, my mom is crying. She did not go far and after 30 minutes she’s back home. In retrospect this felt like a manic episode or a cry for attention to be believed.
The next two days I get a weird vibe. This happened on a Friday and on Monday I went to work. I’m on my way home to my parents wanting to have a meeting with us and with my older sister on FT. I call my sister in the car on my way and asked her if she thinks she snitched and she’s in disbelief that she wouldn’t sink that low. There’s 2 things that I keep from my parents that I’ve shared with my sisters. That I was afraid of at this point: 1. My boyfriend of 6 years, my mom kind of know but culturally we don’t want the pressure to get married while I’m studying (I’ll be done with my masters in June, so we want to tell our parents in the end of summer since they have been friends for 27 years and get married in ~ 1 year). 2. That I smoke weed, nothing overboard and very under control. I have my rules (do only smoke on weekends, 1/4 of a joint each sesh + Low tolerance, not in the day, only one sesh a day, not in exam periods, have to be productive etc). Where I live it’s illegal. No I have not tried other narcotics, nor I do not have the interest to try. I use it as people use “a glass or two” to rewind.
Can skip: (Short story about me: I’m an over achiever. Bachelor in STEM with gpa:A, masters in STEM with gpa:A, been active in student organizations and societies, scholarship. Have worked since I was 15, currently work part time in a prestigious finance company, got a return offer full time before graduating. Bought my first apartment when I was 20, rented that out, invest in funds etc. so financially stable. But for my south Asian parents I have a record, busted for drinking, cigarettes, birth control, sneaking out etc from age 14-20, then it calmed down but they’ll always remember and use it as arguments when I do something that they don’t like).
Anyways, I had 3 joints in my closed hidden very well that I’ve had the last 4-5 months. I run to my room and my jar is gone… I go full panic mode while I’m texting my older sister, she has smoked a handful of times with me and know that I’m responsible. I would never introduce or encourage my younger sister because I do not trust her, she’s reckless and already have two incidents where she drank so much alcohol that the police had her in custody, she was a minor, and my parents had to pick her up at the station and she couldn’t recognize them + getting so wasted that she rang on some random house to ask for the address.
My parents found my jar, long story short. A 3-hour meeting, I took the blame for everything and didn’t want my sisters involved. I was so confused and kept quiet the whole meeting. The aftermath led me and my sister to the conclusion that our younger sister snitched about where the jar was hidden. Bits and pieces of information, things she said that did not add up, how my parents treated her afterwards. I got the silent treatment as usual. Now I wanted revenge.
I did some research and pulled some contacts, my younger sister is very private about her life and I think it because she thinks we would snitch on her and that she keeps her reputation clean in our parents eyes. Pretending everything is fine. The information I got: 1. My sister is failing badly at uni, she will be forced to take a one year leap to retake the courses she failed. her degree will be 4 years instead of 3 years. She looses the benefits of her student loan. 2. She lost her part time job due to failing too many courses. She has been working for free for 6 months (free labor traded for learning). The last 5 months she’s been on pause. One thing is that her spending habits are ridiculously high but also that we have a shared car that she claims that she needs for work and I respected that thinking she actually worked. So no financial stability, no savings (and I have offered her help to budget her money just as I did with my older sister). She’s spending her student debt on stupid things.
My options here are: 1. Listening to my ego. Coldly out her to my parents that I’m not the problematic one, she is and they need to pay more attention to her. I feel I’ll go against my own values here by snitching since I’m fundamentally very against it. 2. Is to be rational, sit her down and have a talk. Ask her why she snitched (even though I don’t think I will come very far here). And give her the opportunity to tell our parents herself since she’s clearly struggling and needs help. With her studies, financially and psychologically/mentally. Also giving her a clear message that she is uninvited from my life and that I want nothing to do with her. She is not welcomed at my wedding or anything in that matter.
BPD Officer reprimands idiot driver Boylston/Tremont.
Just a typical end of the work day 4:30 pm driver who can’t be bothered to follow the law and wait like everyone else. You know the intersection.
I see a ton of comments about BPD not engaging in traffic enforcement, but I hear a great deal of traffic stops over the police scanner station.
I was blessed to watch this cop push through traffic just to pull this driver over and scold her.
2024.05.17 18:48 blumpkins_ahoy Anybody know what todays big police event is about?
My coworker saw two cop cars speed off Auburn Ave onto Old Georgetown and we then heard sirens for about 5 mins. He’s monitoring police scanners, but isn’t able to discern exactly what’s happening. Shooting? Bomb threat?
2024.05.17 18:03 AmbroseBaal Boomer rages at me for going through a yellow light
Some back story: A recent post reminded me of something that occurred back when I was in high school some time time ago. I was heading back to my parents house with my brother in the car and came up to a notoriously long light on an intersection that if you aren't on the main road you will sit at for some time.
From a distance I see that a car was sitting there and the light changes to green. As I get closer (10 or so yards) the light changes yellow and I'm at the point I either slam on the breaks or speed up slightly to get through the light before it goes red. As a high schooler I of course sped up a little to go through which I made and then slow down to the speed I was going. Cue boomer lady who was wanting to turn right onto the street I was going straight on. She turns immediately and starts honking and throwing up hand gestures. I try not to pay any major attention to her except for the fact that she is tailgating me and clearly under some road rage. Well little did I know what was in store. We come to a "T" where we have a stop sign and crossroad has the right of way. Well she pulls into the oncoming traffic lane and starts yelling "It's kids like you who ran over and killed my cat". Me having none that immediately retort "and it's people like you who kill other humans for driving on the wrong side of the road, b$$$$."
I don't recall who actually turned first, but I think she did and I found out she lives off of one of the more trafficked streets and there are police scanners that got set up in front of it from time to time and I now know she was making those complaints.
2024.05.17 16:46 PhascolarctosRabere New Pager
This took place back in the early 90s. We lived in a so-so neighborhood in our first single family home. The neighborhood teen agers were mostly little sociopath wannabe gang bangers with little parental involvement. I had purchased a Bearcat police scanner to listen to the local PD calls, but I soon discovered it would pick up the old school non encrypted cordless phones. We knew what was happening around the neighborhood as it happened! One of the neighbor kid's friends had just gotten a new pager, he was using the neighbor's cordless phone to call his pals to tell them his new pager number. I wrote the number down, then called it and put in the non emergency number of the local PD. The kid called the number, got pissed because he thought one of his friends did it and proceeded to call them all back yelling at them. We got a good laugh out of it!
2024.05.17 11:41 Flamecoat_wolf Star Traders: Frontiers. A Star-Trek style space captain sim.
"Captain! They hit our starboard phasers, we can't fire them any more!" "Report from medical, four injured and one dead." "The crew think it's hopeless, they want to surrender captain. Many are already standing down." "They hit the engines and our power's gone. We're sitting ducks!"
Maybe you'll get lucky, maybe they're just pirates. They take your cargo and depart, leaving you to drift in the void in a damaged ship and the half of your crew that survived. You make emergency repairs and hobble your ship to the nearest star-port. Half your remaining crew don't return to the ship that evening, the memory of their near death experience crushing their morale. Some of the injured died on the journey back, especially when you hit that asteroid belt and could barely maneuver the ship. Your ship doctor is doing all they can but they can only heal so many, only save so many, and the medical bay is damaged beyond use. Your officer tries to rally your crew, gives a passionate speech about love, loss and always getting back up to fight again. A few look reinvigorated, yet more don't return the next day. But you dust yourself off, pay for the repairs, hire new crew and take on a new job. It's just a minor set back...
Or maybe it all ends right there. It was a zealot. A fanatical patriot of the faction you'd been working against on behalf of your contact. They hear no pleas, they take no bribes, only heads.
Perhaps they're not even humans. An existential terror from beyond the known universe. Ships cobbled together from biological matter mixed with strange alien technology. There's no negotiation, there's maybe not even sentience within the minds of your enemies. Snarling and vicious they tear through your crew, and you.
I've had a lot of fun with this game. Initially released in 2018 it's still getting frequent updates and it's full of content that can keep you entertained for hundreds of hours. I would know because I've currently got 270 hours played at the moment and that's only going to go up from here.
Don't let the name fool you, it's not about trading! Unless you want it to be, in which case you can totally make it about trading. Instead you play as the captain of a space ship in a distant future galaxy simply trying to survive and thrive.
The game is a bit of a strange mix between RPG and Rogue-like. I guess I'd describe it as an RPG with lots of replayability. At the start of each game you pick your captain. You can customize your captain in a number of ways but it's balanced around a priorities system. You have Attributes, Skills, Ship, Contacts and Experience. Your top choice will have the highest value while the bottom choice will have the lowest value. So you can start with an extremely skilled captain but you might have a very poor starting ship or only one or two contacts (mission givers, info brokers, rare equipment sellers, black market access, etc. They play a number of roles depending on their position/profession). Or you can start with a top of the line nearly end-game ship, but you'll have to sacrifice your captain's abilities to do so. Experience is basically a head start on levels for you and your crew, which can be very valuable for the early game where it can be tough starting out.
Besides the priorities your captain has a specific class. The default is Pirate but you can play as a Merchant, Assassin, Commander, etc. too. Each will have bonuses based on the play-style they specialize in. Pirates and Smugglers get skills that allow them to access black markets more easily and avoid police patrols from identifying contraband with ship scans. Assassins, soldiers, snipers, etc. get a bonus to their crew combat performance and usually have some bonuses regarding missions too. An assassin will do well in a "Duel of Assassins" conflict between two factions, for example, where typically nobles send assassins to try to kill each other or influential people under a 'lawful war monitored by the United Nations' kind of premise. Whereas a Bodyguard will get bonuses for escort missions and prisoner transport missions. Merchants get better deals for their goods and can impact "trade ban" conflicts more. Commanders get bonuses to ship performance and combat.
There are a lot of options too! Both just as you start but also there are a number of options you can unlock by completing various quests or challenges in your playthroughs, which also adds a lot of replayability. New player classes, new ships and new starting contacts.
Oh, and even if you start with one of the best ships, there's a lot of in-game progression too. Upgrading the ship components and choosing talents as your crew level up is a key aspect of the game. Each crew member has a class too, which will determine what value they're contribute to your ship's overall stats. You need Electronic Tech experts to run a lot of high tech electronic components, you need gunners to be able to man all the guns, and you need Ship Operators to, well, operate the ship. As crew, officers and your captain level up they can choose a talent from their job talents. For example, an E-Tech can get the 'scanner boost' skill, which can be used in ship combat to give you +25% accuracy and +25% evasion. The trick though is that they have very long cooldowns. You'll need multiple crew members with Scanner Boost to be able to use it multiple times in a battle, or to use it in two battles back to back. The game runs in weeks, with the explanation that the energy from the special ship engines prolongs people's lives almost indefinitely. So most skills will have a 3-6 week cooldown, which actually passes pretty quickly when you're traveling. Either way, you get anywhere between 18 and 42 crew, depending on the size of your ship and what kind of barracks you install. So you can have a lot of talents. It's also worth seeking out specialist crew, like a merchant, diplomat, smuggler, etc. so that you can make use of their talents in rarer circumstances.
But be careful! Your crew are vulnerable. Ship battles are dangerous, with plasma beams scraping your hull, miniature fighter ships swarming you, enemy ships ramming and boarding you, etc. If your ship is well prepared, maybe your shields can take the hit and you'll only get rocked a bit, or perhaps you've put most of your upgrades into evasion and can nimbly dodge all the enemy shots. If you do get hit though, prepare to really get hit. The introduction to this review is what it feels like to lose a ship battle in this game. It's incredibly in-depth and very immersive. You can even check, mid battle, which crew are injured, which are low on morale, etc.
A hit to your ship will do a number of things. Every hit will damage both your ship and your crew, but some weapons are more dangerous to one than the other. Radiation blasters will do a lot of damage to your crew but won't do much damage to your ship. It's a great option for people who want to take down a ship without destroying it's cargo. Whereas missiles will do a lot of damage to the hull, but your crew will only suffer some nasty bruises from being thrown around by the impact. Unless your ship is ruptured (it hits 0 overall HP) of course, in which case your whole crew will be vented into space, yourself included. Components will take damage too. Mostly it's random which components get hit, but you can install armour to take some of the hits in place of your vital components. There's also crew combat. Sometimes an enemy ship will board you. It's best to have a combat team on-board to dispatch, otherwise you'll be stuck with inexperienced E-techs and Ship Operators shakily holding pistols. Your captain can be a powerful force in crew combat but be careful, defeat in crew combat often means death. If they succeed in beating the local crew (in a 4v4 battle) they'll get a chance to sabotage your ship before returning to their own ship. Of course, you'll also be 4 crewmen down.
The good news is that you can do all these things to your enemy too! Want to bake them alive with radiation and strip their hull for parts and profit? You can do that. Want to slam your dart of a ship into their battle-cruiser, boarding it and having your pro combat team tear it apart from the inside out? You can do that! Just want to pelt them with the biggest guns for the highest damage to get them out your way? You can do that.
I highly recommend this game. It's got a bit of a learning curve but the immersion and satisfying moments I've gotten out of it put a lot of much higher budget games to shame. There's some really good story lines and quests in there, and it has 9 different difficulty setting so that you can enjoy it however you want.
It really deserves a lot more love than it's gotten and I hope a few more people get to enjoy it after seeing this!
