Dear redditors,
Bit of background. For nearly year i am happy user of decently performing QNAP nas with 4x20To, 64GB of memory and 9th gen i9 processor. Also it's fitted with 4x2To Gen3 TLC nvme drives. It serves both myself and my family as:
1) storage of important family data of around 3To 2) storage of movies/series which i do consume through Plex, no wonder, incl. hw transcoding 3) 1x VM of Windows 10 used as RDP with Qbittorrent, Firefox and jDownloader
For half of month i am work related traveller and above setup helps me to remotly (via WireGuard but it's not NAS related as i got it configured on my router) help both myself to access my important work related data as well as my family (simple things such as downloading stuff, scheduling backups)
Now given that forementioned device draws nearly 90W i came to conclusion that since i have a spare device i would rather use it instead to save om bills which are being generated by QNAP. Also at this moment i will create fresh PLEX library and keep what i have already on NAS bit reorganized but in offline mode.
So i got following:
1) 1x NUC13i5FHH (tall chassis) 2) 2x 16GB 2400MHz sticks found in drawer, 3) 1x M2.2242 SATA3 Transcend 425S 2To 4) 1x M2.2280 KC3000 4To from Kingston 5) 1x SATA3 2To (slightly used) MX500 drive.
Now getting to question finally. What is bugging my mind is choice of OS given the very same set of tasks that i would like to do which i am able now.
I see following choices:
1) Windows 10 OS

• Important family stuff to be kept on KC3000 (since there are several thousands of photos involved, amount of small files is really huge). Since this isnt really hot data its not accessed that much. But i believe accessing (eg. Thumbnails while browsing) that data due to its type will be just faster on nvme drive that on sata.
  
• Windows itself and Plex hosted on either Transcend or Crucial drive. Second SATA will be used only as temporary/current media library (before we consume them and if desired / move / archive to NAS)
  
• Native RDP works from scratch and works nicely (as MacOS user i use MS RDP app and its doing good job having full screen in retina mode clear n clean)
  
• No issues with Raptor Lake related issues/Plex issues
  

2) Ubuntu Desktop.

• KC3000 will be used the same, to store important data,
• Ubuntu itself again like in 1st Scenario on one of SATA drives.
• Desktop version instead of Server to not loose important for me ability to remotly log in to desktop environment,
• I think Ubuntu has some built-in RDP solution based on VNC. My concern is that quality sucks? And its not that (experience) good to use as what Windows offers?
• Slightly steeper curve to do sharing via Samba. Not greatest concern as i share just a couple of directories.
• Expected issues? With hardware transcoding on Raptor Lake CPU
• Filesystem choice. Maybe zfs on single nvme drive and ext4 on sata drives? Pros and cons?
• Idling. Any better or the same like on Windows?

3) TrueNAS scale

• If installed on one of SATA drives, its a waste of its capacity.
• Zfs on drives, wouldnt cow eat them quickly due to its nature ? Remind of fact that i do download a lot and one of sata drives will be used very frequently.
• plex as container. as benefit of this - i can limit usage to be less draining on cpu while doing all these indexing background stuff.
• Vm of Win10 to run Jdownloader and operate Firefox. Using truenas builtin VM hypervisor and uze it via RDP
• Easier than on stock Ubuntu managing of shared folders among myself and homeusers (7)

In all cases backups will be periodically made to QNAP (pulling off whats changed).
By changing platform i expect magnitude of improvement if it comes to power efficiency. My aim is to bring actual 90W to 15W (idling) without sacrifying my workflows.
Question is - did i miss anything? Any unforeseen obvious issues that i run into? Which way to go. Also bear in mind that it has to be rock stable with uptime expectations of 30+ given my frequent absence at home.
current clients of my NAS - Wife, sons, parents in law and couple of friends (plex users) are mix of Windows and MacOS devices.
Current QNAP will be just WoL operated when necessary to do backups.
Did i answered myself correctly that properly configured (eg. windows updates off to avoid random reboots) ltsc Win10 will be... simply best solution?

I know it’s possible but I don’t know if I’d be better off just spending ~$700 on a pc? My Mac is 2019 MacBook Pro 250gb ssd 16gb ram with only about 70gb free disk space left?? I’ll need windows 10 for computer science classes. Thanks!

Hey, I recently upgraded to a Gigabyte z790 aorus elite ax, I wanted to make back my m2 raid0, followed some gigabyte guide etc, no issue so far.
The real issue starts when I want to install windows, windows does not recognize any disk during the installation if they are in raid0 and I have legit no idea why considering it was working flawlessly on my previous mobo.
The only step that I did not fully understand (from this guide https://download.gigabyte.com/FileList/Manual/mb_manual_intel700series-raid_e.pdf?v=3b19103d8b9c27e75cf95b89263efce1) is when I have to enable Map This Root under VMD, I did not found any real explanation on internet nor which one to enable so I’m pretty sure this is where my issue starts.
Any idea?

Hello, I download f1 24 through ea w ea play, when i first launched the game it was a small window and as soon as i changed the video mode in game to 2560x1440 fullscreen window, my whole screen turns black even though i can still hear the sound, i tried uninstall the game and the reinstall, uninstall the gpu driver and reinstall. Nothing works! Anyone has any suggestions? Tysm!!

Hi! I am a digital artist looking to build a new PC as my current one is getting so old it can't even support Windows 11 (and with Windows 10 losing support in a year-ish I figured It's Time). I plan on purchasing all the parts within the next couple of weeks and assembling the PC (with help lol) sometime over the summer. I will mainly be using it for creating art and animations using both 2D and 3D software such as Clip Studio Paint and Blender. I would also like it to handle some casual gaming (most intensive I can think of are Subnautica, Outer Wilds, Another Crabs Treasure?) and streaming. I just need them to play well enough. I have some interest in game development as well although I don't have any software chosen for this purpose yet, its more of a dabble 🙏

Yes, I would like one ~23-26 inch monitor. 1920x1080 resolution (seems pretty standard?). Good color accuracy is also fairly important

My tower is mainly going to be sat on the floor on the outside of my desk, so the size can be pretty flexible as long as we can pick it up to put it on a table for occasional maintenance. Noise should ideally be quiet but i don't need it to be dead silent or anything.

Do you have any aesthetic preferences for color or lighting? Describe what you're looking for, or feel free to provide some links to examples that may help. Some people prefer an inobtrusive stealth build, while others may prefer a case full of rainbow RGB.

I'm more interested in practicality and longevity than aesthetics! I would prefer minimal/no lights but its not a dealbreaker. (I sleep in the same room as my PC and would rather not be awoken by a random rave when windows decides it needs to update lol)

Howdy! I finally have all the files to print my armor however I want to scale it correctly. I heard great things about Armorsmith however you can only download it on Windows and I have a MacBook. Anyone have suggestions on how I should scale my armor to print it? Thanks in advance!

So my laptop was obviously hacked through malware. From what I can speculate, any account or anything I typed into that pc the hacker got all that.
I believe that goolgechrome saves passwords so thats how they got it.
I have no idea how they bypassed the authenticator on my microsoft account but they were able to change the recovery email. Microsoft said it does not look like I was hacked, so I am guessing the hacker used some sort of remote controller and used my pc from afar.
They were able to get into my instagram account and post a story. They also shared my insta account with some sort of service that follows and likes a bunch of random posts. Like 300 followers and 300 posts liked in just 24-48 hours. The odd thing was I wasnt actively logged into my ig on the pc, but I have in the past.
they got my ea games and epic games account.
They did not get my steam account but sent phishing dms to everyone in my friendslist
They seemed to have access to my gmails, but did not change the recovery info so my guess is they either have no need for it once or they were not able to.
It seems only my pc data was leaked as my iphone and apps logged into that phone only are completely safe.
I went ahead and factory reset the pc. I changed the passwords of all my accounts using a password manager.

1. My question is what next? My guess is they were able to get my wifi login info, if so can they do anything?
   
2. I am mostly worreid about things on my google drive, is it no longer safe to download anything from my breeched google drives since the hacker could've planted malware somewhere in it?

So I recently recovered my old gmail account. Of course wghen I recovered it it asked if I wanted to change my password and I clicked yes. It took me through if I wanted to change my phone number and email which of course I changed to my new number and email. All of this happened without a hitch, I was able to log into my old gmail account, but I couldn't change my password. I went into my account and tried to change the password there, I click forgot and confirm my gmail. Then, for no reason at all, it decides to pull up a window with "Your recovery phone recently changed

...What? Why would I change my fuckking phone number if I still used the damn number. So how to hell am I supposed to recover my account? What were they even thinking withg this security measure? All it does is waste my damn time. Is there any way to fix this? Thanks.

So, the problems started last night when my computer kept shutting off in the middle of the game giving me the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH.

The first blue screen message was "Non-HP battery detected".... after a few consecutive startups and shut downs out of no where the new error message was just the basic "your device ran into a problem and needs to restart," the general BSOD.

So I trouble shoot this first issue, "Non-hp battery detected" online, one solution is to update BIOS, which I went ahead and did through the support assistant I believe. I restart my computer after this bios update. THEN I started getting the Boot Device Not Found (3f0) error, no longer being able to get into windows AT ALL.


I did EVERYTHING recommended for this, diagnosed everything in the UEFI and everything passed..... followed THIS HP GUIDE from top to bottom, all the way up to system recovery. https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06101701

So, this final step is where I'm stuck. When I finally had no choice but to attempt to recover through the windows cloud recovery software that I uploaded onto 32gb usb, DOING EVERYTHING IM SUPPOSE TO, clicking esc, f9, boot with the usb, IM STUCK AT THE HP LOADING SCREEN, it doesn't go past the hp loading screen, in fact the little loading spinner spins for a few times then FREEZES lol. I've retried the process several times, even did "windows recovery" instead of trying to boot the system through a flash drive. I have NO IDEA what is going on

As the title says, I kept all of my music (music I've paid for, music from local bands all the way back to my teenage years, music I created when I was a kid, etc.) on an external hard drive that finally failed on me and data recovery was not possible. I'm okay with losing most of the music, but not the ones that I only had one singular copy and won't be able to find anywhere else.
The good news is a lot of the music is still currently on my phone (iPhone 13, iOS 17.5.1) in the Music app. Is there a way to recover the songs in my phone's library back to my computer? I used a Mac for my Music app syncing, but I also have a Windows machine available if there's some Windows-only software that will work for me in this situation.

Okay so I'm trying to learn how to set up a Plex server I've had this idea in my mind for a while and I'm looking into building or buying a nas. I want to learn the software so I downloaded the Plex media server on my gaming laptop and I have a TV series I ripped off a DVD and created a media file linked it up to the browser software and it's just not showing up I've tried making the folder sharable I've looked up how to documents and it all seems so easy but I guess I'm doing something wrong here. I'm running windows 11 with the 64bit Plex software I've tried having the content as a MP4 and as MKV. It shouldn't be this hard to get it visible on the software. Any ideas?

I'm creating my first base image that will be used in Student Labs, and I run post-imaging setup with Powershell scripts, I was wondering what items or Powershell commands do you find useful post Windows 11 image? (Any group policies that fit it, also have those).
Mainly removing stupid things to make PC's faster is what I'm looking for, and anything to make it closer to Windows XP levels of friendlyness (I always hide all the extra task bar crap and align it to the left, makes it smooth.).

They finally made Start into what it should’ve been — a box that holds your apps. No fluff. No features I don’t want. You open the box, and your apps are inside. Along with a small list of files you last opened. That’s it.
No useless ugly box shapes wasting screen real estate (Windows 10). No giant start screen that ruins your visual flow (Windows 8). No useless feature bloat crammed into one tiny menu with a uselessly slow search function that indexes through the entire disk (Windows 7). No dozens of grouped-up folder buttons that statistically, most people never touched (Windows XP).
It’s just a box. That holds your apps.
And to further express my point: nearly every single other OS has moved to this exact same design convention already
It’s good that Microsoft finally did the same. Have a look at macOS’ Launchpad, GNOME’s Apps menu, and Android’s app drawer. Guess what! They’re the exact same thing: a simple box that hold your apps. All of Start’s other functions have been moved to a second button: the Search button, which functions identically to macOS’ Spotlight search, GNOME’s search menu, and Android and iOS.
Everyone complaining about the Windows 11 Start menu is just nitpicking. It’s great, does the exact thing it’s meant to so, and removes the feature bloat that older Start versions had.
