Antifa is a pro-communist anti-fascist movement that labels detractors "nazis" while engaging in the actions as actual nazis of old. Unfortunately for them, they're now acting openly in a country where freedom punches back. Grab your popcorn and chair, the show is just starting.

Note: I'm really tired rn and want to do some other stuff, so I'll respond to more comments later
WT Character Ranking
18: Ezekiel (The Feral Abomination) - He's not consistently insufferable, but I don't particularly find his plot great either. Some of the ways he kept staying on the plane were dumb. Plus, it all led to him showing up in the finale when no one asked, and screwing Heather out of her hard-earned money. I can probably find some things I kind of like about Feral Zeke if I'm optimistic, such as his "Where's Waldo?" appearances, leading to Heather's cameo in Revenge of the Island, along with the ominous atmosphere and neat subtext he provides. But it doesn't change the fact that he is responsible for by far the most unfunny and insulting "joke" in the entire series. Overall, a huge downgrade from what I once considered a highly intriguing character
17: Sierra (Stalkerlicious) - Sierra is a character with some top tier highs intertwined with some of the most infuriating lows in the series. And while I'm not one to try to "cancel" her, I just simply don't like watching her harass Cody. It drags out for 20+ episodes before having any progression, and takes up a majority of her screen time. And the fact Cody is pretty helpless and that no one tries to do anything about it, certainly doesn't help. With that said, she gets better in the last few episodes (though even then not without a few hiccups) and has plenty to like about her. But sadly, her negatives outweigh her positives for me, especially when I look at how she's handled narratively
16: Leshawna (The Beatdown None of us Needed) - Her elimination episode sucks for her as well as the aftermath of it. Leshawna arguably had some reasons to be skeptical of Heather. But even then, the timing of her slapping Heather was extremely wack and made her look brain-dead, with her lack of regret afterwards not helping her case. She also feels less likable than her Island and Action counterparts in general. She still has some good moments, but she's largely disappointing compared to her first two seasons
15: Izzy (Wackiness Gone Wrong) - She has a few hilarious jokes here and there. But her character gets vastly reduced to being "random and quirky". It especially doesn't help that her elimination episode assassinates her character and makes her utterly hateable for no reason. Though Brainzilla was really cool and had some amusing dialect. I find her pretty interchangeable with Leshawna in that she has better highs, but her character assassination in her elimination episode is far worse. Again, very disappointing compared to her first two seasons though
14: DJ (The Hapless Tree-Hugger) - On one hand, the animal curse is terrible conceptually and tortures the guy for no reason, all the while making him unpleasant to watch (and occasionally pathetic). The fact he could've quit just makes how long he stays in the competition even more forced. I also can't decide whether the implications of his curse being a placebo effect make his plot more interesting, or even more aggravating over how long it drags out. But on the other hand, I can't bring myself to dislike him because of how bad I feel for him. And what's even more sad is that it only takes looking back at the Action special to realize the dude needed the money more than anyone else. Plus, credit where it's due, DJ's plot and general presence enhanced Aleheather really well with how they both tried to utilize his situation and fight for an alliance with him, even providing Alejandro with one of his coolest schemes yet. His friendship with Lindsay was also really sweet, and his concern for all the animals he hurt shows how wholesome he is as a person. In a way, I don't think DJ really got worse as much as he just got dealt a bad hand. Dude definitely deserved better
13: Blaineley (The Underutilized Drama Queen) - She played a good role in the aftermaths and served as a great foil to Geoff, on top of being surprisingly funny at times. Though her run in the competition is disappointing to say the least. On top of happening very late, she doesn't get utilized as much as she could've, and gets dumbed down immensely in her elimination episode. I think she had a surprising amount of potential as a unique drama-causing antagonist given the type of connections she had, and it’s a shame it wasn’t executed better. Her elimination speech was funny though
12: Gwen (The Fallen Hero) - She's not very relevant before the Love Triangle, and I don't care much about her friendship with Courtney. She also takes an unlikable turn during the Love Triangle, especially after the kiss gets exposed. Though she received ample consequences, and I don't believe she was victimized by the narrative in the slightest, despite the unfortunate direction taken with her. Plus, you can understand her motivations in hindsight, especially given Duncan kind of dragged her into the mess. She’s fine and has her good moments. And she’s overall pretty harmless. It’s just that this season does her the least favors as far as positives go, and she didn’t have much purpose beyond being a plot-device for the Love Triangle. But as a fellow drummer who also hates singing, she gets some extra brownie points
11: Harold (Chad Skills: The Afterglow) - He's still pretty funny per usual. Though his elimination is a little questionable with an especially cringy exit to boot. While I think his ego spiraling out of control was an interesting direction to take him, this alongside him quitting could've worked so much better had he been a finalist in Action. Thankfully he gets utilized far better in the aftermaths. And “Baby” absolutely slaps IMO. But I can only rank him so high this season
10: Bridgette (The Cool Surfer Chick) - I think she is quite better than a lot of people give her credit for. Putting aside her terrible and cringy apology song, which even then had the right intentions behind it, she has a nice plot of making an understandable mistake, feeling immensely bad and making up for it. Beyond that, she has some really cool moments that enhance her better qualities well, and I'd argue sticks out more consistently than her Island iteration. Her role in the aftermaths was also fun, and it especially helps that the aftermaths here are far superior to Action. Despite her lackluster game performance, Bridgette retains her likability and gets expanded on surprisingly well
9: Tyler (The Clumsy Jock with a Heart of Gold) - He has his funny moments even if his brand of humor doesn't generally appeal to me. His loyalty and patience to Lindsay is especially admirable, and their relationship after Lindsay finally remembers him is really cute. He also plays a relatively important role as Alejandro's catalyst for the Love Triangle drama, and we especially get to see what a great guy he is during said plot. On a side note, I really like that the writers weren't afraid to give him a more douchey side (mainly his antics with Cody). But despite this, he's still a good person at heart
8: Noah (The Robbed Raltable King) - Honestly, his humor has started to wear thin on me. With that said, he still has some especially great lines. I also really like his progression from Island of becoming somewhat less anti-social, and contributing to his team more. He even pulls some big-brain strats which I always appreciate. And his performance in his elimination episode was especially really good, as well as him and Owen's friendship. It's a shame he got screwed over by Team Amazon plot armor and a bullshit elimination to boot. Despite this, I enjoyed his time in World Tour
7: Courtney (The Temperamental Diva) - Ironically, I actually like her more in the second half of World Tour than the first. Even then, she still has her entertaining moments and has an AMAZING singing voice. But throughout the first half, she was more of a background character and wasn't all that memorable, and arguably doesn’t get held accountable enough for her actions in…Action, despite not actually doing anything to atone for them. Playing devil's advocate, Courtney was more low-key during her time on the Amazons and didn't go out of her way to be a pain for no reason, unlike Heather. But the fact that Gwen and Courtney's friendship just revolves around them hating Heather, is inadvertently detrimental to Heather's arc in a way. The one positive I can give her and Gwen's friendship is her using her acquired CIT skills to help heal Gwen's sunburnt hand. With that said, she's far more entertaining during the Love triangle. Her unbridled rage provides great comedy, and her and Duncan's mutual hate feud is even better here than in Action. Plus, even if I side with Duncan, I can sympathize with her to a degree. While you can argue the Love Triangle did not do a ton of favors in actually progressing her character, it's not like she was really changing for the better beforehand
6: Cody (Still a Nice Guy) - While more flawed than his Island iteration, he has more highs. I don't really mind his unlikable moments. But even putting that aside, he's just barely utilized for a good portion of his screen time, and there are a period of episodes in the middle of World Tour where he is barely relevant at all. On the plus side, I really liked how he tried to play the mediator to his team at times, and his sleazy antics provided for some very funny moments. I also felt terrible for him with anything involving Sierra. And he's especially really good in his last few episodes, whether it be his surprisingly good friendship with Heather, the insight we get into his outside life, and even his interactions with Sierra at times. He also hand-crafted a hot-air balloon out of a pile of scraps, and played an especially great role as one of Heather's helpers in the finale. I do wish him fully getting over Gwen was capitalized on better though. To sum it up, he has a very good beginning, a rougher middle, but gets especially really good in the last few episodes, which I think makes his time in World Tour worth it for the most part. He is also a good mix of being a floater, but making some brief attempts to strategize here and there (that, and the decent social game that goes with it), which I think makes him a pretty fitting 3rd placer
5: Lindsay (The Loveable Sweetheart) - Is it just me, or does Lindsay just feel even more likable than usual during her time in World Tour? She isn't super remarkable at first, but even then has a few funny jokes. Though as her time in the competition progresses, she becomes an absolute sweetheart who you just can't help but root for. She's also a surprisingly good team leader and ironically does a better job than in Action. Her friendship with DJ is adorable. Admittedly, the Tyler gag wasn't particularly funny or made sense. But her finally remembering him was a really cute moment. And afterwards, she really proves to care about him, which is most notable in the 3rd aftermath. Her performance in her elimination episode was especially amazing, and it's a shame she got screwed over the way she did. Easily the most wholesome character of the season, and by far the best pre-merger
4: Owen (The Ultimate Glow-up) - I get why some people don't like him going as far as he does for the third time. But I think as a result, it gets overlooked how much Owen substantially improves compared to his first two seasons. Not only is the writers' favoritism toward him toned down, but his actual character is also better. His gross-out humor is made less prevalent than in the first two seasons, in favor of focusing more on his goofy and childlike tendencies. And even the fart jokes he does have are utilized more creatively and just arguably funnier in general. His one-sided rivalry with "Al" is one of the funniest parts of the season, and he was one of the very few characters to actually get under his skin in his own way, albeit completely unintentionally. He also made for a great foil later on with his wholesome personality, as the season took a darker turn. And he came in absolutely clutch for his team in "Sweden Sour" in one of the coolest ways possible. Also, call my sense of humor twisted, but his "Babe Olympics" comment is hilarious. It also makes him more interesting and further establishes that despite being good-hearted, he isn’t the brightest tool in the shed and doesn't always appreciate the gravity behind certain actions (which was also prevalent in previous seasons). I can go into more depth on all his individual moments and instances he made me laugh. But overall, Owen is a fantastic presence and my favorite out of the comic reliefs this season. And I think he contributed to the season in a surprising amount of ways that only Owen can
3: Duncan (King Duncan’s Spicy Return) - I honestly couldn't care less about Duncan being a dick to Courtney, given the existence of Action. The one issue I have with him is how his actions affect Gwuncan as a couple, which proved to have a lot of potential to be a really good endgame relationship had they formed in a better way. But outside of that, Duncan is the GOAT this season. And honestly, I find him more likable and less flawed than in Action. He was one of the highlights of the first episode, from his ending line in "Come Fly With Us", to his general distaste for singing which provided some comedic moments (and is actually something I relate to personally). He quit the competition with style, then returned and ignited one of the most compelling conflicts in the series, where each side had understandable motivations for their actions. This is helped by the fact we get to see the perspective of multiple other characters on the situation, fleshing out their personal values. The Love Triangle also did wonders in the gameplay-department as we saw multiple people try to strategize and twist the situation in their favor. Sure, a lot of characters involved are not the nicest people in the world. But I think that's what makes World Tour so appealing. Sometimes, I like watching characters be selfish assholes, especially in a competition-driven setting. And unlike the Island finale or a lot of the Gwent drama, it's done in a way that made logical sense and didn’t reek of favoritism on any sides. While Duncan's nice side is less prevalent than before, he remains just as charming and entertaining as ever, and he still has some nice interactions with people he genuinely cares about. His return also helps deviate from the first half of World Tour which mainly consisted of comic relief characters and Alejandro cleverly eliminating characters one-by-one. Their rivalry is engaging, has funny moments, and is arguably one of the most unique conflicts in the series. And while Alejandro was a step ahead and ultimately came out on top, you still get the sense that Duncan was one of the very few competitors to actually challenge him. Individually, he also pulled some really cool feats in challenges and was at some of his most strategically involved here. To make a longer story short, the dude was able to go from being at high risk of elimination, to making it to the final 5 and being the closest Alejandro had to an equal partner (besides Heather). Then there’s also his mutual hate-feud with Courtney which is even funnier and less flawed here than in Action. Plus, it just so happens that both of these interactions were integrated with each-other really well and even enhanced the Aleheather plotline. There is not a single dull moment with Duncan this season. And while there is room for improvement, I think Duncan’s return made World Tour far better
2: Alejandro (The Final Boss of Gen One) - Villains are not usually a strong suit in Total Drama. Though above them all stands Alejandro. This guy is an amalgamation of virtually every quality from past villains, but better. To put it simply, his approach is multifaceted, unpredictable, and really well-executed. But at the same time, he isn't completely perfect, from his feelings for Heather holding him back, his aversion to being called "Al", and his schemes not always hitting the mark (episode 23 being a prime example). His amazing gameplay is complemented well with him being arguably the most pragmatic out of all the villains, which makes him likable despite his heinous actions. And his backstory with his brother adds a layer of sympathy to him (even if it was brought up kind of awkwardly). Unfortunately, his schemes with Bridgette and Leshawna were poorly written on his end, and in Leshawna's case, dragged her down significantly. But beyond that, he's just such a fun antagonist to watch. And regardless of how much you actually care about strategy in TD, you get legitimately invested in his gameplay. He takes every approach into consideration instead of being a one-trick pony, and he rarely relies on luck to get by despite some very occasional lucky breaks. But at the same time, he's not too boring either and has his share of funny moments. This is most noteworthy with his relationship with Heather, which is universally loved for good reason. Despite being the main antagonist, I am completely fine with Alejandro being a finalist, and I would go as far as to say the dude is a legitimately deserving winner. And I think his position as a finalist really capitalizes well on the narrative World Tour had that being nice doesn't always get you the furthest, and sometimes you have to play dirtier to reach a goal
1: Heather (The Legacy of a Queen Bee) - With that said, Heather winning is just simply better from a narrative standpoint. She has an amazing transition from being a villain to an anti-hero, creating for a great subtle redemption that humanizes her but doesn't completely deviate from her original personality. Though it's not like she was solely less mean for ulterior motives involving the game either, as she had some altruistically kind moments and even tried to help some people with their personal issues. Her friendship with Cody is surprisingly cute, and I get the sense that she genuinely cared about him to a degree. And in a way, her arc also comes full-circle in the form of Harold and Cody being her helpers. Not only this, but she vastly improves her gameplay. She actually tries to treat her allies nicely this time, makes more genuine attempts to stay in the game rather than just relying on luck, and performs especially well in challenges. But above all else, there are very few competitors with as much drive and determination as her, which wound up being the biggest factor in why she got as far as she did despite her circumstances. Granted, her first half of World Tour was rough and leaves a lot to be desired. She was especially unlikable in a bad way throughout episodes 4 and 8, and in a way that did her no favors to her position on the team. But she gets far better in the second half, having arguably one of the best performances in the series. And despite Alejandro being a consistently better game-player, Heather wound up being the only one able to take him down, and through the same trick he used on many others, making his downfall incredibly juicy and poetic. Speaking of which, Aleheather in general is an amazing love-hate relationship with many funny moments, and one of the most interesting with how much their interactions get intertwined with their strategic gameplay. Plus, there is arguably some really cool subtext and parallels behind their plot. Regardless of how you feel about other aspects of World Tour, I feel like the writers put a ton of their eggs into Aleheather, and I think it paid off immensely. Beyond this, Heather just has a ton of everything in what makes a Total Drama character good, from entertainment-value, funny moments, and fantastic interactions with others. Despite her flaws, she is consistently enjoyable and has some of the best highs in the series. Sadly, Feral Zeke came in and ruined everything. But it doesn’t sour how good everything else leading up to it was

2024.05.28 23:15 DairyFarmerOnCrack Luxon's War on Nature Explained

Dr Russel Norman produced this excellent summary of Luxon's War on Nature, links included.
It can be challenging to keep up with this many environmental attacks, coming from different Ministers and in different stages of development. To make it clearer, I have tried to list all the anti-nature policies below, provide some background, and give an indication of their stage in the policy process.
When you list them all like this, it really is entirely fair to describe it as a ‘war on nature’.

1. Fast track approvals bill is a fast track to destruction

The premier vehicle for the government’s anti-environmental war on nature is the Fast Track Approvals Bill, currently before Parliament’s Environment Select Committee. This Bill has been well traversed elsewhere but it is worth noting here a few things.
Firstly, this bill gives three individual ministers with no particular knowledge or expertise the ability to green light pretty much any project they like with almost zero environmental constraints.
There are panels who will provide advice to Ministers on individual projects, however these panels are handpicked by the Ministers and the Ministers are free to ignore the panels’ recommendations. The Ministers have publicly and clearly voiced their disdain for environmental considerations.

No public input

Secondly, there is no opportunity for public input.
They can approve an industrial incinerator next door and you don’t even have the right to make a submission on it. It’s a pretty wild level of disregard for the general public, but of course those who have connections to the government will have plenty of chances to lobby ministers at fundraising dinners and suchlike.
This results in poor decision making. One of the things about public submissions is that information comes to the surface that was otherwise hidden. In the Pakiri sand mining case for instance it was revealed through public submissions that the sandmining company was not telling the truth about its actual sandmining practices and that its expert had overestimated the annual sand replacement by a factor of ten.
Under this regime, it isn’t what you know, or whether you have a good project, it’s who you know.

Court decisions overturned

Thirdly, this process can overturn court decisions in which projects have already been declined due to environmental impacts.
This is patently the case with the South Taranaki seabed mining proposal which was rejected by the Supreme Court. Independent judges who tested evidence submitted and cross examined in open court found that the applicant simply couldn’t demonstrate that their project wouldn’t cause immense harm.
But this is all replaced by closed panels giving advice to Ministers who will make decisions with zero public scrutiny. It’s banana republic stuff.

Blocking renewable energy projects

One of the impacts of this kind of Government-by-Ministerial-Fiat is that that rational and evidence based decision making is put to one side in favour of individual favours.
An example of this is the conflict between seabed mining and offshore wind in the south Taranaki Bight. A normal rational decision-making process could look at both, but in this case, it will come down to which companies can woo the three Ministers the best.

Corruption

Finally, this is a process which is wide open to corruption, as corporations pushing projects that cause environmental harm seek to be placed on the fast track list, with a virtual guarantee of approval.
Ministers could be corruptly influenced by bribes in cash or in kind, by jobs for their families, by jobs for themselves post-politics, or by campaign donations. Advisers who provide access to Ministers and determine which corporations get onto the list will be equally incentivised to act corruptly.
Already, some of the companies that Ministers have invited to apply for fast track are their donors. Mining company executives have had secret dinners with Ministers that were only revealed by accident and journalists asking questions. How many secret dinners will we never find out about?
Even the Ministry for the Environment analysis can be summarised as the bill:
‘could diminish local voices, violate Treaty of Waitangi commitments, significantly impact human and environmental health, open legal risks for the ministers involved, provide an unprecedented back door for prohibited projects, and erode the value of conservation land’
This single bill, if it proceeds and if businesses have the gall to use it, will cause widespread harm. It could include seabed mining, incinerators imposed on local communities, mining most everywhere including the conservation estate, marine farms everywhere, industrial irrigation driving water pollution, etc etc etc. It is a war on nature but it is also diminishing democracy and opening the door to corruption.

2. Dismantling freshwater protections

One of the truly remarkable things about Aotearoa is the scale of ground and surface water pollution and its impact on biodiversity and human health. This government’s war on nature is set to make it worse.

Things are pretty bad already

The Ministry for the Environment concluded that ‘Most of our indigenous freshwater fish and freshwater bird species… are either threatened with extinction or at risk of becoming threatened’. Intensive industrial dairy has poisoned the well across much of the South Island – Canterbury, Otago and Southland have poisoned rivers and groundwater.
Land and Water Aotearoa found that ‘There is not a single monitored lake shallower than 10 metres in very good condition.’ Environment Canterbury in 2024 found nitrate levels increasing in 60% of the wells it tested. Many parts of the North Island with intensive dairying such as the Waikato are also heavily polluted.
Under pressure from the environment movement and the majority of New Zealanders, the last government brought in a series of national regulations to place some constraints on agribusiness pollution, particularly the National Policy Statement on Freshwater Management. Agribusiness virulently and vociferously opposed these regulations.
The new government is setting about undoing these regulations with its war on nature.

Delaying regional freshwater plans

This began in December 2023 when Andrew Hoggard, the former head of agribusiness lobby group Federated Farmers and now Associate Agriculture Minister, announced that regional councils would be given a further three years to update their freshwater plans to make the plans consistent with the new national regulations introduced by the last government.
The purpose of the delay is to weaken or remove the national regulations before the regional councils develop their new regional freshwater plans which must be consistent with the national regulations.

Replacing the National Policy Statement

He also announced that they would start the process of systematically weakening the national regulations by replacing the National Policy Statement on Freshwater Management (NPSFM) with a weaker version.

Removing rules on intensive winter grazing

This was followed up in April 2024 with the announcement of an amendment to the RMA which will remove the rules controlling intensive winter grazing.
Intensive winter grazing is a widespread practice in Otago and Southland in which feed crops are grazed intensively through winter. This results in cows, often pregnant, living in mud sometimes up to their bellies with massive sediment flows into rivers and lakes. The sediment smothers freshwater ecosystems.

Ensuring Te Mana o Te Wai doesn’t apply to consents

Also included in this amendment to the RMA is a direction to regional councils that a national regulatory instrument called Te Mana o Te Wai must not be applied to the assessment of individual resource consent applications. Te Mana o Te Wai states that, when making decisions on the allocation of freshwater, the needs of ecosystems come first, the needs of human health second, and other uses such as irrigation third.
Te Mana o te Wai was the foundation for hearing panels rejecting applications to take water and cause more pollution in Hawkes Bay and Southland recently. Giant dairy polluter Fonterra and agribusiness lobby groups objected to this use of Te Mana o Te Wai and appealed the decisions.
The new Government aims to ensure that commercial users can get first consideration ahead of ecosystems or human health. This also means the lessons of the world’s biggest crypospridiosis outbreak in Havelock North are abandoned .

Freshwater Farm plans to be weakened or abolished

Alongside this Freshwater Farm Plans, which were a requirement for agribusiness managers to plan to reduce their water pollution, will be weakened if not abolished altogether.
As you can see it is an intensive and extensive attack on the rules protecting freshwater as part of the broader war on nature.

3. Removal of requirement to identify important areas of biodiversity

A large part of New Zealand’s remaining biodiversity is on private land with very little legal protection, which is leading to dramatic losses. This happens through wetland drainage, agricultural intensification, subdivisions etc.
Even as recently as 2009 Landcare Research reported that ‘Agricultural intensification over the past 10 years has led to the highest rate of native vegetation loss since European colonisation.’ Landcare Research was deeply unpopular with the government and agribusiness after making this finding.
In response to the widespread destruction of biodiversity on private land the National Policy Statement on Indigenous Biodiversity was introduced in 2023 after many years of discussion and consultation. The purpose is ‘to maintain indigenous biodiversity across Aotearoa New Zealand so that there is at least no overall loss in indigenous biodiversity’. A part of this national policy statement is a requirement for councils to identify ‘Significant Natural Areas’ in their area as a precursor to providing for their protection.
The idea of rules to protect biodiversity ran up against agribusiness, the key driver of the ‘highest rate of native vegetation loss since European colonisation’, and hence Federated Farmers deeply opposed these rules.
As part of the RMA amendment bill announced in April 2024, the Luxon Government plans to remove the requirement that councils identify ‘’Significant Natural Areas’’, and hence biodiversity on private land will not even be identified let alone protected so its destruction can continue unabated.

4. Transport – more motorways, fewer cycleways and less public transport

Land transport is New Zealand’s second biggest climate polluter after agribusiness and yet this government has embarked on a radical policy agenda to increase pollution. The war on nature can be illustrated just by listing some of the initiatives:

Cuts to public transport

They have cut funding to public transport, walking and cycling and increased funding to motorways as part of the draft Government Policy Statement on land transport. Auckland Council pointed out that entire suburbs would be left without access to public transport as a result of the cuts and that fares would increase.
Across the whole country this draft policy statement will lead to more transport pollution and fewer trips by public transport walking and cycling. It also centralises much of the decision making around transport by preventing Councils from building cycleways alongside roads funded by central government money.
As part of the draft policy statement they removed climate as a requirement for consideration in transport decision making.

Impact on young people

They have removed the subsidies for young people to use public transport at discounted rates, not only making the cost of living crisis harder for them and their families but pushing them towards car transport.
They are moving to increase speeds around schools which not only increases injuries it discourages families from sending their kids to school by bike or foot because they know that speeding cars are more dangerous.
This sits alongside the attacks on traffic calming measures such as raised pedestrian crossings, which the NZ Herald has been busy providing misinformation about. Many Councils are resisting the idiots in Wellington, thank goodness, and are lowering speed limits anyway.

Interisland ferry funding removal

They cut the funding for the interisland ferry terminals and cancelled the new ferries which have lower emissions. The ferries connect the train network as well as the roading network.
Kiwirail lost its Climate Bonds certification as a result and will repay the $350m it borrowed plus interest.
The cost to the Government of breaking the ship build contracts is thought to be in the hundreds of millions. It’s an expensive mistake which a future government will have to fix.

Ending subsidies for low-emissions vehicles

They ended the subsidies for low emissions vehicles resulting in a collapse in EV and small car sales and once again Ford Rangers at the top of the list (guzzling gas and killing pedestrians and cyclists).
While we can’t simply replace traffic jams of internal combustion engine cars with traffic jams of electric cars, nonetheless EVs are part of the low carbon solution.

Removing council’s transport plans

The Government has moved to end Wellington’s transport plan with its focus on public transport walking and cycling and move towards more cars. There remains uncertainty as to the future solution but clearly they want more cars.
They abolished the Auckland Regional Fuel tax of ten cents a litre which was used mostly to fund the building of the first stages of the Eastern Busway and new commuter rail carriages. The Eastern Busway has now been reduced in size, as the fourth phase is unfunded.
They cancelled the Auckland light rail project. This project was troubled, with the previous government heading down the most expensive track, but there are still better options than just cancelling it.
There’s even more but you get the sense of it. Their transport policy is plainly designed to increase climate pollution as part of their war on nature.

5. The war on dolphins, seals and marine life

The government’s war on nature is not only being fought on land. It extends to the oceans too.

Marine biodiversity

The majority of Aotearoa’s biodiversity is to be found in the oceans around us and the main driver of biodiversity destruction in the oceans is the fishing industry.
This is particularly the case for practices like bottom trawling, where heavy nets are dragged along the ocean floor destroying corals and sponges in order to catch fish near the bottom.
Over the last decade the environment movement and the majority of New Zealanders have been slowly pushing governments towards improving oversight of the fishing industry and restrictions on their most destructive practices. But the new government wants to go backwards…

South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation

There is an obscure inter-governmental organisation called the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO) that is meant to regulate fisheries in the international waters of the South Pacific.
The other countries in this forum are trying to restrict bottom trawling because of the immense harm it causes. As the last country actively bottom trawling in the international waters of the South Pacific, New Zealand is opposing these constraints, but under the last government had agreed to some modest restrictions.
The new government has changed its position, opposing protection of vulnerable coral habitats from trawling, and does not support any kind of restrictions on bottom trawling.

Cameras on boats

After the various scandals led to a 2016 Ministerial Inquiry into the Ministry of Primary Industries’ regulation of the fishing industry, the Key Government agreed to implement cameras on boats to better monitor illegal behaviour such as fish dumping, dolphin killing etc.
These cameras were finally rolled out over the last few years to about 120 fishing vessels and have so far resulted in a dramatic increase in reporting of dolphin and bird killings and fish dumping.
But Shane Jones, Minister of Fishing and recipient of seafood industry campaign donations, doesn’t like them and wants to review them. Another option the government is canvassing is to hand them over to Fishserv, the fishing industry owned company that oversees the Quota Management System.
None of these are good options but where it ends is still unclear.

Increasing catch limits

In spite of the collapse of numerous fisheries, the Minister of Fisheries decided to increase catch limits.
The population of one of the species, the southern bluefin tuna, has collapsed 92% since the height of fishing madness in the 1960s. This follows the collapse of orange roughy fishery, hoki, scallops, crayfish etc etc.
And with regard to killing endangered New Zealand sea lions the new Government decided there would no longer be an upper limit on the number of sea lions that the fishing industry can drown in trawl nets.
This will no doubt be the tip of the iceberg as more change emerges from the Minister.

6. Increased climate pollution

Aside from the long list of policies above that will increase climate pollution (e.g. transport), the government has introduced other policies to increase emissions. The impacts from these policies mean the government’s war on nature will be felt internationally.

Restarting offshore oil and gas exploration

The global battle against fossil fuels has both a supply and demand side.
On the demand side are the battles around fossil fuel electricity generation and internal combustion engines vehicles.
But the supply side is also critical because, as the International Energy Agency found back in 2021, we can’t afford to bring more fossil fuel supply online if we are to avoid catastrophic warming. The head of the IEA said: “If governments are serious about the climate crisis, there can be no new investments in oil, gas and coal, from now – from this year.” We know that once oil companies spend vast amounts to find and develop new fossil fuel reserves they will continue to sell them into the global fossil fuel market.
Hence the decision by the New Zealand Government in 2018 to stop issuing new offshore oil and gas exploration permits was a critical step forward in the global fossil fuel battle. Other countries have now joined this movement and there is a growing group of governments and civil society groups supporting a Fossil Fuel Non Proliferation Treaty.
The announcement by the Luxon Government that it will restart the issuance of offshore oil and gas exploration permits is a global leap backwards. It’s another sign that their fighting a war on nature, not fossil fuels
The Government is looking to subsidise the industry by providing insurance against future policy changes. They are also looking to remove the requirement that oil companies provide a clean up bond to cover future clean up costs. These clean up bonds were introduced after Tamarind oil company went bankrupt leaving the taxpayer with a $300m bill to clean up after them.
The Government is falsely claiming that the recent electricity shortages are linked to the 2018 decision to stop issuing new permits for oil and gas exploration – an argument that is transparently false.

Changing the way methane warming is measured

The global livestock lobby has a policy agenda to change the way that the climate warming of methane is measured. This is to make it look like methane causes less warming than it really does.
They want to move away from the global standard accepted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, as standard called GWP100. They want the world to adopt a standard called GWP*. Under GWP* New Zealand’s methane is recategorised as not causing warming! Agribusiness likes GWP* because they won’t need to cut emissions!
The New Zealand agribusiness lobby groups are part of this project, and now they have the former head of Federated Farmers in Government, they have their chance to push it. The Government has established a panel to look into the measurement of the warming of methane emissions. I would be very surprised if the panel does not recommend the adoption of GWP*.
Both the Climate Commission and the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment have concluded that there is no basis to review the science around the measurement of the warming effect of methane.

More cash for magic bullets

The New Zealand Government has given hundreds of millions of dollars to look for magic bullets to reduce methane emissions from dairy cattle and other livestock. So far no magic bullets have been discovered but the new Government has thrown another $18m at this greenwashing.
The purpose of all this is to avoid having to cut emissions by doing things that actually work like reducing fertiliser use and stocking rates.

Zero Carbon Act – greenwashing law retained

It is noteworthy that a Government conducting a war on climate and biodiversity policy has kept the Zero Carbon Act (ZCA) in place. But there is a good reason for that – the ZCA was largely a greenwashing exercise as was revealed once it was tested in court.
When Lawyers for Climate Action went to court to try to use the ZCA to actually force emissions cuts on the government, the Climate Minister, James Shaw, went to court to argue that the Paris Agreement climate goals referenced in the ZCA were merely ‘aspirational’ and not binding on the New Zealand government.
This was in spite of Shaw saying publicly that the ZCA made the Paris target legally binding on the government. Shaw won the case and the climate lawyers lost. The new Government is very fond of the ZCA because it is just ‘aspirational’.

He Waka Eke Noa – its job is done

One final piece of the puzzle is pricing agribusiness emissions. This was delayed throughout the course of the last government by the He Waka Eke Noa process. This will now be either quietly euthanised or kept as another greenwashing figleaf, but we can be sure there will be no price on agricultural emissions – they will be subsidised by the rest of us

Update

We have now found out that the politician chairing the select committee considering the fast track bill, David MacLeod, has illegally failed to declare $180,000 in donations. Moreover, some of those donations come from a major shareholder in the seabed mining company TTR. TTR is planning to use the fast track legislation to circumvent the Supreme Court decision blocking its seabed mining plans. In fact one of the decision-making Ministers under the Fast Track law, Chris Bishop, wrote to TTR inviting them to apply to use the fast track. So a major shareholder of TTR gave campaign money to the National Party MP who chaired the select committee on the fast track bill while the National Party Minister invited TTR to apply for a fast track.

2024.05.28 22:37 Longjumping-Date-367 The crying monarch Vs The adrenaline demon

Klein had mistakenly seen Dimitri as an enemy. With determination coursing through his veins, he launched a fierce assault, aiming a series of jabs at Dimitri's Adam's apple. As he realized the gravity of the situation, it dawned on him: if he didn't finish Dimitri now, he would be the one who fell.
Klein went for the decisive strike, but Dimitri leaned all the way back in a fluid, almost surreal motion—a move from his unique boxing style called "Freedom." Practitioners of this style moved without restrictions, embodying true freedom and becoming an unstoppable force of nature. From his swayed-back position, Dimitri transitioned into a powerful headbutt. Klein, sensing danger, stepped back. Though a seasoned boxer, it was his first encounter with this unorthodox style. Nervousness or excitement—only time would tell.
Klein's left hook connected, sending Dimitri reeling to his left. The force of the punch rang in Dimitri's ears, his vision blurring momentarily. Instinctively, Dimitri hurled a nearby chair at Klein. Forced to block, Klein missed Dimitri's next move—an in-step that closed the distance, followed by a devastating shovel hook. Stumbling back, panting, Klein thought, "This monster can't feel pain." He decided to stall, moving around the classroom to outlast Dimitri's adrenaline rush.
Dimitri taunted Klein, calling him "Calvin Klein" to provoke a reaction. But Klein's focus was singular: winning. Overcoming this challenge would elevate his skills to new heights. Dimitri, growing impatient, began leaping from desk to desk, croaking, "Calvin Kleinnnnnnnn, come herreeee!" Klein analyzed Dimitri's movements, spotting numerous flaws, yet their sheer number made it difficult to exploit any.
Realizing his strategy, Klein charged at Dimitri with a turtle guard. Dimitri, accepting the head-on challenge, leaped toward Klein. In a split-second collision, Klein's headbutt connected, sending Dimitri crashing to the ground. Klein thought he had won and sighed in relief, only to hear the executive watching from the sidelines laugh ominously. Dimitri rose, seemingly unscathed. Klein had never encountered such resilience. But he knew overcoming this "mountain" required risking his life.
Dimitri charged with his hands down. Klein, maintaining his boxing stance, threw a jab, but Dimitri twisted his upper body, delivering a rib-shattering hook. Klein felt like puking. Dimitri taunted him, "The executive would probably kill you if you’re so weak," as if this were a mere sparring session.
Klein, now on the ground, felt a burning desire to overcome his limitations and become the king of all. His tears flowed not from defeat but from frustration at his own weakness. Dimitri misunderstood, thinking Klein was crying because he lost. He taunted, "Don't be sad, friend. I'm just better," sticking his tongue out as the executive smirked.
But Klein's determination flared. His body felt like it was on fire. As Dimitri turned to the executive, Klein stood, a new fierceness in his eyes. With a frown, he grabbed a table and smashed it over Dimitri's head, knocking him down. Crying out, "Just why? JUST WHY DID YOU COME IN MY WAY?" he faced Dimitri, who slowly rose, bloodied but unbowed.
In that moment, the classroom became a battlefield between two beasts—the crying monarch and the adrenaline demon. Klein dodged Dimitri's low jabs with newfound speed, closing the gap with an uppercut followed by a left hook. The blows echoed like gunshots. Dimitri fell, and Klein, the crying monarch, turned to face the executive. But then he felt a presence behind him—it was Dimitri, serious and different from before, saying, "This is not fun anymore."
The air grew dense with tension as the executive approached, feeling the unprecedented pressure. He knocked both fighters out, carrying Dimitri on his shoulders. As Klein lay motionless, the executive placed a business card near his hand. The battle had shaken the room, leaving the students in awe of the fierce confrontation they had witnessed.
There seemed to be a janitor come out of nowhere and stood in front of klein saying "can I clean here?" after saying that he lifted klein's whole body with 1 arm, mopped the floor and left

2024.05.28 20:42 Ralts_Bloodthorne Nova Wars - Chapter 65

[First Contact] [Dark Ages] [First] [Prev] [Next] [wiki]
"Now hear this, now hear this.
"In less than an hour we will drop out of jump space. Chances of an enemy encounter are high. We are far from home, far from support and surrounded by untold trillions of Mar-gite in deep space. This is good, it means we don't have to worry about what we shoot at.
"When the time comes, I have only one standing order: fight. Fight with every gun, every missile, every ounce of will and scrap of code at your disposal. If central control is lost, fight under local control. If isolated from the computers, fight under manual control. If boarded, fight for every corridor, every stateroom, every access way you can reach. Fight for your lives and if you find your situation hopeless, fight to drag the enemy into the grave with you.
"The Confederacy expects that every sentient will do their duty. Our duty is to engage the enemy.
"And the enemy only exists to be destroyed.
"That is all." -- Nova Wars Era, Confederate Space Force, speaker and ship of origin uncertain.
"Tell me, Sister? How far does your sight reach? How many years? And then, in the future, when we have given up strength, and allies, and numbers, and the potential to fight back meaningfully, time and again, in pursuit of your safe path... and you find out it is a cul-de-sac, surrounded on all sides by death, with no possible escape, because you traded away every chance of victory because you were scared... who will you blame then?" - Dhruv Deshmuhk, Legion, apocryphal, referenced in "Telling a Hard Truth straight: a love language", Psychology Forever Journal
"We fight, not for today, not for this blood soaked agony wracked terrible day or the horrible horrible victory we may wrench from the gnashing jaws of defeat with blood soaked hands.
"We fight for tomorrow. For those yet unborn. For the future.
"You are the hope of the Telkan people. You are the living standard, the banner, that says to the universe: We will not submit! We will not kneel! We will stand! We will fight!
"With that, know that the Telkan people are with you, Marine. Always." - Director Brentili'ik, in a speech to Telkan Marine Officer's Training Course Class #10, Confederacy-Council Conflict Era.
The flashes were starting. Not big ones, not the Flashbang, but rather the tiny pinpricks of harsh light that sparkled for a second that vanished.
Deaths that had happened seconds or minutes prior.
Captain N'Skrek stared out the windows of the Show Bridge, staring at the inky black of space. The ship, the Gray Lady, was in between the Galactic Arms, in the vast nothingness that held no stellar systems.
Oh, it had at one time.
Forty thousand years prior the stars between the two galactic arm spurs had gone out, with the exception of a single string of pearls liking the two galactic arms.
Now, the Gray Lady, a ship in the Colossus Class of ancient Confederacy Space Force classification, was deep into the gulf between the galactic arms. Just over halfway.
He could see the rings that made up a long tube, the rings held into position by what looked like, at a distance of light seconds, to be thin straps. Coasting silently through the rings, bathed by light emitted by the interior of the rings, were massive Mar-gite Attack Clusters.
Sparkles were starting to show on the clusters as the Fruit Flies made their attack runs.
Larger flashes, still rendered tiny by stellar distances, started shining to brief life as the C+ cannon barrages and the missile swarms started slamming into the shining chrome ships.
Return fire was causing the battlescreens to cover the ship in a gauzy veil.
"No, no, it's all death and destruction," a Terran woman moaned from where she was being held in place by three identical human males.
Captain N'Skrek knew that it was, without any doubt, a physical assault upon the female.
But Captain N'Skrek was also smart enough to know not to get involved when two Immortals of myth and legend were having a family squabble.
After all, were not the Treana'ad a crafty and wise people who managed to obtain victgory over 25% of all military engagements with the Terrans?
"We're humans, there's always death and destruction," the male said, his voice slightly mocking. "Look past the probabilities. Look past the initial death and destruction. Look at the pathways it all leads to. Look at the path that we're taking."
The woman struggled but the man held her still.
"It's all death and destruction! Millions! Billions! Trillions of deaths!" she wailed.
"The enemy's death toll does not matter, little sister," the man, known to historians as the Biological Apostle Vat-Grown Luke, told the woman. "It's war. There will be death and destruction no matter what. What matters, all that matters, is that humanity and its allies survive."
"Please, Luke," the woman started sobbing.
"Tears don't work on me," Legion said, his voice full of dark and cruel mirth.
He leaned his head down.
"I am... Legion," he said softly.
Captain N'Skrek put the two Immortals out of his mind as he coordinated the battle, taking tactical and strategic advice from his staff.
The Fruit Flies wreaked havoc on the rings, shattering them, letting superstructure damage work with inertia and momentum to tear the systems apart. C+ cannon shots hitting deep inside the megastructures. The shots were no longer straight iron ferrite slugs with a hyperdrive engine for thrust and reactionless inertia engines for guidance and terminal maneuvers, they now had a burning core of spooky and strange-particle FOOF that weighed in the metric kilotons.
"Fruit Fly system back online, Captain."
"Fabricate and launch," N'Skrek ordered. "Compliments on their initial strikes."
The silver ships were destroyed already, the temporal range finders reporting data from when the shells would hit, telling N'Skrek's staff where the ships would be when the shots were fired.
"I can't... I can't..." the woman sobbed when N'Skrek ordered another flight of Fruit Flies into the fight.
"Parse the deaths, parse the destruction," Legion said. Another of him pointed at the icons for the just-launched Fruit Fly flights. "They are born, they live, and they die to kill the enemy. Over and over, it's what they do. Look past their deaths at their accomplishments."
The Terran woman was sobbing, but N'Skrek didn't care.
He had a job to do.
Task Force Lonely Peach had a job to do.
It had came as no surprise to him that Legion would know, without being told or having it confirmed, what the ultimate goal of Task Force Lonely Peach.
After all, Legion himself had carried out such orders under the command of the Imperium.
It no longer mattered what happened behind the Gray Lady, whether or not the Confederacy or anyone else survived. It no longer mattered if the Mar-gite were victorious or not.
The target were not the Mar-gite, present in the massive rolled up long cones.
The target were the ones pushing them forward, the ones enabling them to cross the great emptiness between the two galactic arms.
No, the target was now those enabling the Mar-gite.
Captain N'Skrek's orders were simple.
Find the enemy.
Determine their leadership.
Attack their military.
Attack their planets.
Sterilize their stellar systems.
Break the will of their civilians to support their government.
Leave them no ground to go to.
His briefing had been grim. The Confederacy was confident it could eventually stop the Mar-gite.
Eventually.
That meant dozens, hundreds, possibly thousands of planets denuded of life. Just as many stars nova-sparked to wipe out any trace of the Mar-gite.
Task Force Lonely Peach had been dispatched with a very Terran mission.
To return to the Mar-gite's masters what they had given the Confederacy.
Tenfold.
Captain N'Skrek watched as the Fruit Flies split up into squadrons, heading for any remaining hulks of the silver ships, the larger pieces of the megaconstruct, and to fire upon any of the Mega-Clusters or larger.
"Look past the death and destruction," Legion was saying. "They'll be sending in reinforcements, Sacajawea," his voice grew low and deadly. "Where will they come out."
"No, I won't," she whispered, her eyes wide and staring at the holotank. "I won't use my gift," she sobbed.
"You will. You ran away last time. You left us to rely on The Detainee to access the SUDS. You ran off and left us and humanity has been extinct for forty-thousand years," Legion was saying. "No more running, little sister. You will use your gifts, your powers, as you were meant to."
There was a perfectly timed coincidental moment of silence on the Show Bridge.
"Show us the way," Legion said.
Sacajawea suddenly jerked upright, the tendons on her neck standing out as her face raised to the ceiling. Her arm lifted, pointing out the window of the Show Bridge. Her other hand thrust itself into the hologram. Her eyes glowed purple, lightning crackled up and down her raven braids, and sparks danced between her teeth as they chattered.
A section of space was outlined as she gibbered for a moment, fragments of words, chops of sentences, followed by a string of numbers that the tactical computers recognized as coordinates.
"They come, more than before. They know not what they face, just that the enemy, that we, are attacking them, attacking their forces, and so now they will arrive here and now," she cried out. "They do not know, they come in a multitude that not even this powerful vessel can resist. They come by the hundreds, and will overwhelm even this vessel according to my Sight."
She collapsed and Legion caught her even as two versions of him turned to face the windows.
"Let me know when you want me to call for those reinforcements I promised you," one said.
"Or not," the other said.
N'Skrek just nodded, turning and giving orders to the crew to prepare for a microjump to put them 'above' and 'away' from the point that Sacajawea had pointed out.
"Can she have lied?" N'Skrek asked, the Legion standing beside him as four others carefully carried Sacajawea off.
Legion shook his head. "No. I'd know if she was lying," he said. "She was filled with a trance, a fugue state, so the more mortal part of her wasn't there to lie."
"Hold off on those reinforcements until we can see what we are facing," N'Skrek said. He snorted. "I doubt the young lady fully appreciates the firepower the Gray Lady can put out."
"She was never military. She had some training, but not much," Legion said. "Still, she had a vision, take that as you will."
N'Skrek nodded. He turned and ordered up more Fruit Flies to be generated.
He'd have them launch as soon as the microjump was finished.
"Digital Sentiences, Virtual Intelligences report jump transit safety interlocks are engaged," came the word.
N'Skrek motioned. "Engage."
The painting appeared, but before N'Skrek could pause to look at it he was thrown through it, the image shattering into hundreds of shards of reality. They dissolved almost instantly.
N'Skrek only took a half-step forward as the ship entered realspace.
"Load the planet-crackers. Target the larger Mar-gite constructs. Let's see how they like that, since we don't have to worry about gravitational wobble," N'Skrek ordered. "When our new guests arrive, I want them to be focusing on the constructs."
"Fruit Flies are launching. Steam driven launcher only," came the report.
N'Skrek nodded, staring at the screen.
"I remember waiting to ambush the Mantid's Third Fleet that was heading for Sol," Legion said conversationally, as if he wasn't speaking about one of the most famous wars of ancient history. "Hiding in the gravity shadow of a supermassive gas giant, inside the rings themselves."
He turned and gave N'Skrek a grin.
"An Armada of One," he said. "No chance for the Mantid to overwhelm my brain, to shut me down. Beyond a Hive Mind, a singular mind with a singular purpose."
"Sounds exciting," N'Skrek said, watching the windows and the holotank at the same time.
"Very boring. I played a lot of video games and card games," Legion said.
"Against yourself, even an MMO would be solitary and single player," N'Skrek said.
"Ruins PvP," Legion grinned.
"I'll bet," N'Skrek said.
"The Sacajawea of that time stood on the bridge with me. She had shown me where the Mantid would take the most casualties and where I would be killed quite often," Legion said. He pulled out a pack of cigarettes and N'Skrek hid a frown at the fact he didn't recognize Lucky Strike as a brand he was familiar with.
"Does it hurt when you get killed?" N'Skrek asked as Legion lit two cigarettes, handing one to N'Skrek.
"Very much so," Legion said. "Took me a few hundred thousand deaths to get used to it. Now, it hurts, it's terrifying, but not much more than clipping my fingernails," he sighed. "It's all right. I've always been, in many ways, less than human."
"You seem, to my albeit limited experience, to be very human to me," N'Skrek said. He took a drag off the cigarette and almost started coughing. It was harsh, raw tobacco with no additives and the filter tasting heavily of asbestos.
The Fruit Flies were scattering, going to full stealth, blinking their ready icons.
"Thank you," Legion said. He exhaled smoke. "Like the smoke?"
N'Skrek nodded.
"Gift from the Dee. Not the Detainee Lady Lord of Hell," he said, staring at the holotank. "But The Dee. The flesh and blood one," he gave a rueful chuckle. "Evil never dies."
"Harsh," N'Skrek said.
The missile pods flashed ready and went to stealth.
"Like her," Legion smiled. He suddenly looked a bit sad. "I miss her. Miss my siblings, the other Biological Apostles," he said. He sighed. "Sacajawea makes me miss them all that much more."
N'Skrek just nodded.
"Sometimes I miss the Digital Omnimessiah too."
"Ship is at silent running," came the soft voice.
N'Skrek stood there, smoking, with Legion standing next to him.
Behind them Mar-gite clusters were breaking up from a combination of the FOOF and the split second artificial singularities that exploded into existence inside their mass.
Perhaps I can't completely eliminate them, but I can knock out a measurable percentage since I don't have to worry about how it might affect a stellar system's gravity balance, he thought at one point.
Time slowly ticked by.
"How is she?" N'Skrek asked at one point.
"Recovering. I'm sitting with her. I had a medic look at her. Physically, she's fine," Legion said.
"She should be on anti-depressants and undergoing therapy. For us it's ancient history, for her the Glassing and the loss of her people, even her death, are recent events. She only died a short time ago," N'Skrek said.
"And you should be dancing for a comely matron and I should be somewhere helping someone correct genetic sequencing damage," Legion said. "Shoulda, coulda, woulda, didn't."
N'Skrek just nodded.
"Wait, can you see that?" Legion suddenly asked, pointing at the window.
"What?" N'Skrek said.
"The stars. A faint red-shift," Legion said.
N'Skrek looked toward the scanning officer, who frowned and looked at his instruments.
"It's faint. And large," Legion said. He motioned with his hands, using the smart-glass interface to highlight the area. "Right there."
"Nothing, sir," the scan-tech said.
N'Skrek tapped his lapel. "All personnel, prepare for enemy engagement," he said.
His voice carried over the intercom.
"Akka-Berry," Legion said softly. "They use a form of Akka-Berry."
The chrome ships suddenly appeared, wavering slightly like a heat mirage before solidifying up. They appeared pebbled and dull, like unbuffed and unpolished chrome.
"OPEN FIRE!" N'Skrek roared. He knew it was unnecessary, that the computers would give the fire order.
But it seemed to carry more weight as the PA repeated it.
0-0-0-0-0
Legion got into the elevator, waiting a moment after the doors closed to touch the panel. He overrode the alarms, then stopped the elevator.
The shadows warped and a light fog filled the elevator car.
It cleared to reveal a short Terran woman, with black hair pulled behind her head in a long braid, a severe face, plump, overripe figure, and gunmetal gray eyes.
"Well?" Legion asked.
"She's a child," the woman spat.
"I know that," Legion said. "Can you help her?"
"No, I mean, she's literally a child. Physically. She's never grown up," the woman snarled.
"Our aging was halted due to what we were going to do. The last thing we needed was a temporal sheer to kill half of us via old age," Legion said.
"I know that, you multiplying idiot," the woman snapped. "But she should have been allowed to grow into an adult first."
"She chose to stay young," Legion shrugged.
"And her brain has the neural pathways of a child," the woman snapped. She dug out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter of enameled steel. "The human brain doesn't fully mature until it's in its mid-20's. That's why we sent 18 year olds off to die in a rice patty or on some god forsaken beach. You need people who think charging the machinegun is a good idea, and teenage boys are well known for their excellent risk-reward judgement."
Legion just shrugged.
"But her, she's a child. Sixteen at the most, probably later fifteen," the woman said. She pulled out a cigarette, held it between her even white teeth, and lit it. "She has the mind of a teenage girl, a people known for their excellent decision making ability and capability to process trauma."
Legion just nodded.
The woman put away the cigarettes without offering one to Legion. He saw the emblem on the lighter.
"US ARMY ATOMIC COMMAND" in red block letters.
"You know how I feel about child soldiers," the woman said.
"It was The Glassing," Legion just shrugged.
"It's always something," the woman snarled. "Doesn't change how I feel."
"Can you help her?" Legion asked. "You're closer to her than I am."
"You mean, I'm as much a primitive barbarian as she is," the woman said, suddenly smiling without any humor. "I am what I am and she is what she is. Primitive savages from a time of hardship, resource shortages, and social upheaval."
"I wouldn't be so rude as to put it that way," Legion said. He smiled back. "But, yes."
The woman stared at the brushed steel wall of the elevator for a long moment. "I won't alter her SUDS record."
"Of course not," Legion said.
After a moment she nodded. "I can't help her, but I know some people who may."
Legion looked down at her. "Who?"
The woman smiled and exhaled smoke that filled the elevator car.
Her teeth and eyes were still visible.
"You'll know them when I bring them," she said. The eyes blinked. "Keep me in the loop for what's going on here. I have a feeling that events back home are going to have my attention pretty soon."
"I will," Legion told the eyes as the smile vanished.
The eyes closed.
Legion could feel it when she was gone. The smoke slowly cleared, leaving him alone in the elevator.
0-0-0-0-0
"What is taking this elevator so long to get here?" Jaskel asked 8814.
--not know computer says is moving-- the greenie replied.
"Aw man, Gunny's going to have my ass."

First / Previous / Next
The scream rang through the frigate. Northern ran down the hall and burst into Fen's room where she found her sitting up panting, covered in sweat.
"What is it? What happened?"
"T-The Nanites. They spoke to me." she tried to control her breathing, taking huge breaths and holding them for a moment, releasing them through her nose. "They said they're not going to devour our dimension, but they need to Gates to help search for a different one to devour."
"Devour?"
"They are a distributed intelligence inside the Nanites. They consume everything to make more of themselves. They said their own dimension was not like ours - fewer stars and planets - and they found a white hole to power themselves and the Gates, but now they need more energy." Fen continued to try and control her breathing, but she started panting instead. "Northern" she gasped.
Northern grabbed Fen and hugged her tightly. As she held her, Fen's breathing slowly recovered and tears started flowing down her cheeks. "What are we going to do?"
"The first thing we're going to do-" As she stood, Fen thought for a moment that the AI seemed taller. She exuded confidence that made Fen feel like she could fix things. "-is get out of here. No way we can stay here Helen and the Empire. The second thing we're going to do is go find Gord."
"But we don't know where he is."
"I've got an idea." Northern flashed a grin and winked as she strode out of the room. Exhausted, Fen sighed, and flopped back onto the bed.
"Stormy! If you're not connected up to the ship, it's time. We're going.
"Going where, Northern?" Stormy's voice came from the PA.
"Tell you when we're out of here. Are we still on the Dreadnought's umbilical?" Northern sat in the center seat on the Command deck. Her fingers danced over the panels built into the arms of the chair. All over the ship, there were sounds of activity as the reactor came back online and other systems started to spin up.
"We are. I'm spoofing their sensors right now, so long as you keep the running lights off they won't know we're running hot until they come up to the airlock."
"Ideally, I want to be gone before they even know we left. What time is it on the ship?"
"Hour or so before lunch."
"Shit. That means Helen will probably be coming by soon."
"Speak of the devil-" Stormy took over one of the large screens on the command deck, and changed the view to an external camera. Helen Raaden was entering the hangar right then, flanked by a brace of guards, all armed with rifles. "Odd she should come armed like that on her own ship, isn't it?"
"Not if she wasn't going to let our friend have any chance of making her own decision." Northern tapped more on her pads, and the whining whirr of the slug thrower spinning out was heard. On the screen, Northern watched them all stop moving suddenly and the guards raise their rifles as they surrounded Helen.
"After careful consideration, we have decided to reject your offer, 'Admiral' Helen Raaden." Stormy said over the PA. "We are leaving."
Helen's eyes could melt a ship's hull. She started shouting at the guards and three of them peeled off and ran back the way they came while some of them opened fire on Stormy. The rounds plinking off the hull sounded like hail.
"Northern! They're bringing in the big guns. Unless we do something we're holed." Stormy's camera flicked, and Northern saw a large slug thrower unfolding from the ceiling of the hangar and swung towards them, it's double barrel staring at them menacingly.
"Shit shit shit!" Northern got up from her seat and ran over to a station in front of her. She reached deep underneath the workstation and manipulated a lever. A hooting, brassy alarm started up all over the ship and a binnacle rose out of the floor in front of the commander's seat. She ran back and as she sat, pedals unfolded and her seat belted her in tightly. "Stormy! You concentrate on countermeasures, I'm going to fly us out."
"You're putting me on manual? I knew you were odd Northern Lights, but I had no idea you took complete leave of your senses!"
"You worry about those slug throwers, Stormy Days, I'll worry about getting us out of the hangar in once piece." Northern grasped the two control sticks that stuck out from near the top of the binnacle and placed her feet on the pedals. With a twist of thrusters, Stormy lifted off the deck and started to slide slowly, wobbling slightly.
As she did so, nobody noticed Helen, but the cameras recorded it. As she stood there, shouting and ordering people around, the dust and debris in the hangar swirled around moving towards her. While she stood there, it formed up behind her making a set of gossamer wings that began to glow slightly.
Fen sat up sharply. She started to move awkwardly, in fits and starts, as if her limbs weren't entirely her own to control.
We tried to talk you into this Fen. We gave you every opportunity to go along with it. We would have given you anything you wanted, let you rule however you sought fit. But, you leave us no choice. You are Empress and you will rule.
"N-No." Fen's voice sounded weak, blurry. "S-stop. I don't want to do this."
The time for bargaining has long passed.
As the thrusters kicked in, Fen wobbled. Ship's gravity took over, and things were smooth quickly enough, but the Nanites noticed the change.
Too soon! We have to leave now.
Fen broke into a stiff legged run, and took off towards the airlock.
Back on the command deck, Northern struggled to control the ship while Stormy handled point defense. It seemed like for every gun they shot at, two more appeared. "Northern this isn't working. I'm going to try and blow a hole and get us out of here!"
"You're welcome to give it a shot Stormy, I'm out of ideas."
"Uh, Northern?" Zhe's head lifted from the console she was sitting at. "What about the wormhole generator?"
"What about it, Zhe? Is that broken now too?"
"No, but why don't we use it?"
"Inside the hangar? That's madness!"
"Why?"
"Because it would severely damage the-" Northern stopped and listened to what she was saying. "It would damage Helen's ship and help prevent them from chasing after us! Zhe, you're brilliant! Stormy, compute a link out of here. Doesn't matter where, we can link again once we're safe."
"On it Northern. Computing solution now."
Fen's body reached the airlock. As the ship was maneuvering, it was locked. Shaking, her hand went up to the unlock pad and she leaned in, using her shoulder to push hard on the pad. After a moment, the light turned green and both doors snapped open.
The noise was intense. The thrusters were loud enough on their own, but that combined with the chatter of the guns and the movement of the air and shouts from the crew made hearing anything impossible. Bending her knees down low to build energy, Fen sprang out of the airlock.
"Northern! I have a solution. Just let me know when to link."
"Do it now, Stormy!"
"Linking away in 3... 2..." Stormy gasped. "Northern! The ventral airlock! It's-"
As the wormhole opened and surrounded Stormy Days, the ship wasn't the only thing that linked away. The air, dust, floor of the hangar, some of the side plates also linked away. Everyone in the hanger was dazzled by the wormhole, and then deafened as the air stolen by Stormy Days rushed back in.
Everyone was knocked over by the force except Helen. If anyone was watching, they would have seen something like her wings swing in front of her to direct the force around her. As air rushed into the hangar to replace what Stormy had taken, sound returned to the large room. There were sirens and klaxons and other alarms sounding all at once.
Helen clicked her comm. "Silence those alarms. We know where the damage is. Get fire teams down to the hangar and run diagnostics on the reactors. I know they're under us. I need Medical too, we have injured. Bring stretchers."
"Yes, Admiral!" The voice on the other end was cool and professional. Helen nodded to herself. She tried to make sure she surrounded herself with cool and professional people. Ignoring her guards who were coming back to consciousness slowly, she strode over to the body laying on the floor near the crater left by Stormy's departure. She kneeled down. "Fen."
Fen's body rustled and she moaned and tried to push herself upright.
"Don't move Fen. I'm getting medical down here. We'll make sure you're all right."
"W-wha-"
"Shhhhh, shhhh." Helen stroked Fen's hair. It even felt like Melody's. She smiled to herself. Everything was coming together. Soon enough, they would be back on track. "We're going to make sure you're not injured, but the Nanites should have taken the majority of the impact for you. You'll be good as new in a few days, Empress."

The New Order of Cincinnatus National Convention of 1952 Peacock-Shah Alternate Elections
“We must all hang together or we shall all hang separately.”
Thus quipped Benjamin Franklin as the American colonies joined against the tyranny of George III, the phrase hangs heavy in the imaginations of today’s political opposition. Laden with fears of violence, Chairman Osro Cobb of the Progressive-Federalist National Committee announced the cancellation of the party’s presidential primaries and the formal acquiescence of the party to the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic’s call for a joint presidential nominating convention with the American Liberty League. Yet, with the organization’s President Thomas Schall, once seen as the nearly prohibitive favorite for the nomination, dying in an unforeseen car accident and populist contender Eduardo Chibas taking his own life on live radio, the attempt to unite the opposition must find a candidate able to carry both banners in the face of Philip La Follette’s campaign for a third term.

Clare Boothe Luce waves to her supporters.
Major Candidates:
The following candidates are seen as frontrunners for the nomination.
Clare Boothe Luce: 49 year old Clare Boothe Luce of Connecticut rose to prominence as Henry Luce’s scandal-ridden yet massively popular First Lady, whose charisma would lead to a popular joke that every Luce voter wished they had voted for Clare despite widely known allegations of mutual marital infidelity. Marrying Henry after divorcing her first husband and entering high society as the author of an all-female play, Luce would become First Lady at the young age of 38 and soon emerge as a face of the American home front amidst the Third Pacific War. Describing the nation as having become a “dictatorial bumbledom,” Luce has echoed the anti-New State ethos of the party and is seen as the candidate of establishment conservatives. Criticizing the very slogan of President La Follette, she has argued that the United States cannot “win the peace” as it has not truly won the war until the defeat of international communism. Clare has supported the Zionist project in Alaska, a unified military command to replace the Department of Peace, and the creation of a defense pact among American allies in the Pacific as the centerpiece of an aggressively interventionist foreign policy declaring “if we are no longer willing to fight for it, our Christian democracy is finished." Yet, Luce has also opposed the creation of a stronger international United Nations to replace the powerless Parliament of Nations.
Driven to Catholicism in 1946 following the death of her daughter, even as her ex-president husband gallivanted about with a girlfriend a thousand miles from his wife’s baptism, Luce has emerged as a changed woman, reportedly abandoning her affairs and entering a career in electoral politics with her 1946 election to the Senate. Though Aaron Burr Houston maintained a private devotion to the Church of Rome, Clare has taken her faith with a zeal heretofore unseen in American politics, using the Senate as a pulpit to preach against “materialism” and a spiritual decline as the root of both communism and fascism, slyly suggesting that the rise of the Pentecostal, Immannuelite, and Mormon faiths has come hand-in-hand with the nation’s fascist surge as she has publicly wished that “the whole world would be Catholic.” Despite defenses from Presbyterian former President Luce, Clare’s faith has weakened her amongst convention delegates fearing the alienation of firmly Protestant voters. Yet her charm, wealth, and ability to attract millions in funding from backers such as Henry Ford II while winning key endorsements such as that of Richard Nixon has catapulted her to the front of the field.
W. Lee O’Daniel: 62 year old Senator W. Lee O’Daniel, better known as Pappy, rose to prominence in his late 20s as an architect of domestic policy during Aaron Burr Houston’s third term, being largely credited with the introduction of an old age pension system funded by a consumption tax. After making his way to the fore of Texas politics on his own through the integration of musical numbers and a widely popular radio show with his political antics, O’Daniel would turn from an upset gubernatorial defeat in the 1938 midterms to organizing Aaron Burr Houston’s campaign for a fourth term in the White House as the nation’s last hope against Charles Lindbergh. Accused by critics of puppeteering a dementia ridden 86 year old out of his own lust for power, O’Daniel would serve as Secretary of the Treasury for a year before being unceremoniously removed from the cabinet by Henry Luce for his critique of the American attack on Pearl Harbor and opposition to the draft, leaving him in political isolation as the Texan distinguished himself by demanding the execution of striking laborers as crucial to the war effort over his radio show.
A steadfast isolationist, O’Daniel’s foreign policy views have made him a favorite among Liberty League libertarians. Depicting himself as nearly as conservative as Luce on domestic issues with an isolationist foreign policy able to appeal to the Midwest, O’Daniel has emphasized ties to the legendary ABH and anti-alcohol views he claims can over the rural South. O’Daniel has also sought to use Luce’s Catholicism into an issue, seeking the support of Ben Gitlow through their shared membership in the Evangelical Christian Right. Yet, O’Daniel has been seen as the least committed among the candidates to the Committee’s pro-democracy ideals, while others question his fitness for office based on his eccentric manners as a cabinet Secretary and Senator, with Eleanor B. Roosevelt’s 1936 running mate Dan Moody remarking that “Pappy is as lost at the Treasury as I would be in a circus trapeze.
Lucius D. Clay: A distant relative of former President Henry Clay, 54 year old General of the Army turned banker Lucius D. Clay of Georgia has been the subject of a draft movement seeking to secure a candidate with the allure of a war hero after an attack on right wing generals such as Harold George, “some of whom are my own classmates,” accusing them of leading the party astray with the nomination of the ultra-conservative Benjamin Gitlow. Clay has portrayed himself as the candidate of order, supporting, as the others do, the prosecution of Blackshirts and the freeing of prosecuted opposition politicians. However, Clay, a former administrator of Lindbergh-era public works programs, is the only candidate to stop short of supporting the abolition of the New State, with backers instead focusing on the renowned administrative talent that led Douglas MacArthur to quip that Clay “could run General Motors or General Bradley’s army.” Despite his reticence to campaign at the convention, Clay’s moderation, vague platform, connections, and war hero status have won over a significant segment of delegates.
John Sampson Cooper: Named for martyred Admiral William T. Sampson not long after the First Pacific War dramatically ended with the Second Battle of Hawai’i, 50 year old Kentucky Senator John Sampson Cooper has led an underdog campaign of moderate liberals led by young activists Mark Hatfield and Chuck Mathias and Tannenbaum territorial delegate Jacob Javits. Returning home from Yale to find his father on his deathbed and his beloved Pulaski County burned to the ground amidst the Revolution, Cooper would be elected to county leadership at age 24, famously responding to a legal requirement that he evict the impoverished by personally paying their debts, earning the moniker “the poor man’s judge” as he emerged as a major figure in post-Revolutionary reconciliation in Kentucky. Returning home once more from service as a military attache in the Third Pacific War, Cooper would oust incumbent Farmer-Laborite Jerry Spencer in a 1944 upset, delaying taking his seat to serve as a legal advisor to hundreds of thousands of displaced Indonesians before emerging as a Senate leader in bringing the United States closer to India and other nations newly liberated from colonialism.
While eschewing the isolationism of O’Daniel, Cooper has demonstrated a far more relaxed stand on foreign policy than Luce, opposing aggressive anti-communism abroad while depicting the United States as a great mediator of peace in situations such as the violence in Palestine or partition of India. The reported favorite of Fulgencio Batista despite Cooper’s criticism of Batista as insufficiently committed to democracy, the Kentuckian has managed to maintain a widespread popularity with labor that has led many to speculate that Cooper would be the only candidate able to win the endorsement of organized labor and an imprisoned John L. Lewis. Lacking the celebrity draw of Senator Luce, Cooper has countered with a far more detailed platform, calling for the opening of American borders to the world’s refugees, massively increased federal aid to education, and, in stances that have left him anathema to many party conservatives, support for universal health insurance, coal subsidies, and public housing. A self admitted “truly terrible public speaker," Cooper’s political independence has won him the support of Will Rogers Jr. and made him a favorite of the modern liberal wing of the Liberty League.

Roy Acuff strikes up the band.
Minor Candidates:
The following have significant support, but lag behind the frontrunner candidates.
Luis A. Ferre: Among the most grim results of the 1948 elections emerged from the Caribbean, where states once considered the most loyally anti-Farmer-Labor in America crossed the aisle for the first time in history. With strategists seeing the path to the presidency running through the island states, many among the electorally minded have flocked to 48 year old Puerto Rico Senator Luis A. Ferre, publisher of the nation’s largest Spanish language newspaper, El Nuevo Dia. A classically trained pianist who has focused his senatorial career on securing funding for the arts, Ferre has referred to the United States as the “moral summit of the world,” while aligning himself in the middle on economic policy, calling for “addressing the inequalities of society” by selling off public land at a low price and supporting federal public housing with an emphasis on rural revitalization, in addition to a call for a 4% Christmas bonus on the grounds of the Jesus Amendment.
James A. Rhodes: "Every time I take a position on an issue, I lose two percent of the people. If I do that 50 times, I have everybody mad at me," the quip encapsulates the philosophy of 43 year old Ohio Governor James A. “Jim” Rhodes and his backers. Emerging as the favorite of many convention delegates who have argued that the best path forward for a united campaign is a steadfast focus on bread and butter issues, Rhodes has remarked that “there are only three issues in this campaign: jobs, jobs, and jobs,” and has argued that any anti-La Follette campaign must focus on people’s lives and the economy, not vague notions of democracy and American ideals. Born in the hills of Appalachia, Rhodes would be forced out of college after failing every class, only to work his way into the Mayoralty of Columbus, before unexpectedly catapulting himself to the Ohio Governorship before the age of 40, where he has governed with a moderate conservatism focused on local issues such as water rights and a program to "put a college education within 25 miles of every boy and girl” that has been praised as a national model.
Roy Acuff: 49 year old Roy Acuff of Tennessee was christened “The King of Country Music” for smash hits such as Wabash Cannonball, leading fellow musician Hank Williams to quip “book him and you don’t worry about crowds…for drawing power in the South, it’s Roy Acuff, then God.” Yet, after a rumor that Governor Buford Elington had labeled his music “disgraceful,” Acuff would embrace the label “king of the Hillbillies” in the 1948 election cycle to trade his acoustic throne for the Governor’s chair. Declaring that “any business must be put on a business plan, and so must a state government,” Acuff has cut the budget while requiring the Ten Commandments to be posted in government buildings, increasing state pensions, instituting a free school textbook program, cooperating with the La Follette Administration on the hydroelectric Tennessee Valley Authority, and has controversially called for additional restrictions on firearm ownership. Widely considered a possible frontrunner for his celebrity status if a primary were to have been held, Acuff has supported O’Daniel at the convention, yet has evasively refused to disavow a draft movement arising from his pro-union sympathies that many suspect could bring Fulgencio Batista into the fold alongside John L. Lewis, Jimmy Hoffa, and the opposition Farmer-Laborites.
Henry S. Breckinridge: The only member of the Liberty League at the fore of presidential consideration, 66 year old New York Congressman Henry Skillman Breckinridge ran alongside Al Capone in 1936 in the campaign that doomed the Commonwealth alliance, but has reinvented his career since by working to ally Federalist and Liberty League causes against La Follette and serving as the organization’s House leader. Advocating a heavily internationalist vision in line somewhere between that of Cooper and Luce, Breckinridge’s commitment to small government classical liberalism and a strict construction of the constitution has made him the favorite of Liberty League loyalists and some party conservatives. However, it is considered unlikely for a Liberty League member to win outright due to Progressive-Federalists comprising a majority of convention delegates.
Eleanor Butler Roosevelt: 63 year old former President Eleanor Butler Roosevelt was promoted for the nomination for months by her former counsel turned the “voice of impeachment,” Richard Nixon, who has noted that her re-election would have stopped the rise of fascism in its tracks. However, content with retirement, the writing of her memoirs, and the promotion of Nixon’s career, Roosevelt has categorically refused to seek the presidency. Nonetheless, she is expected to receive votes on the convention’s opening ballot from admirers.

Richard Nixon with the California delegation.
The Convention:
District of Columbia police scattered the Immanuelites, holding fliers declaring that their savior had prophesied nuclear armageddon on October 3rd of 1952, but they did not touch the Blackshirts. Ominously, they milled about in the blocks surrounding the convention, brandishing small arms and chants for Phil, as, within, the national convention of the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic proceeded without the pomp and circumstance conventions thrive in, a veil of despair lying over the nearly two thousand delegates in the plaza as they longed from their windows for days past. Further, a rule requiring two thirds of the convention for nomination, instituted by Liberty Leaguers fearful of a tyranny of the majority, would practically guarantee balloting periods stretching long into the night.
The first ballot would open with a surprise, as Roy Acuff rose to rebuff the acolytes of Fulgencio Batista. Pointing to the imprisoned Cuba Governor’s permissive policies towards gambling and prostitution, Acuff would draw a firm line between his pro-labor Christian conservatism and the “moral and political corruption” of Governor Batista. With the vociferousness of the singer’s vituperations and an unexpected willingness to attack Batista personally where other candidates stood largely silent, Acuff would find himself winning extensive support. With the rise of Roy Acuff splintering Pappy O’Daniel’s support, the former Secretary of the Treasury would find himself performing unexpectedly weakly, the beginning of a hemorrhage that would see his support move to Acuff in the first several rounds of balloting. Meanwhile, Clare Boothe Luce would take a lead out of the gate, but soon find that the collapse of Pappy O'Daniel's campaign following a wholesale defection to Acuff would lead other O'Daniel backers to rally behind Clay as an electable alternative. With Luce's lead dwindling, Cooper would swiftly capture her momentum, driving her to second place as a draft movement for Eleanor Butler Roosevelt peeled off dozens more Luce votes.

Ballot 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Lucius D. Clay 512 513 549 601 632 637 656
Clare Boothe Luce 646 641 619 599 529 515 514

Henry Skillman Breckinri-dge 21 21 21 21 19 17 15
With 1,310 delegates necessary to win the nomination, another half dozen rounds of balloting would bring no candidate anywhere near the necessary supermajority. Luce delegates would fiercely resist the rise of Lucius D. Clay, with Luce's manager Walter Judd and friend Anna Chennault illicitly spreading pamphlets accusing the General of being a plant of the regime to take control of the opposition. Yet, with his eyes on leading a reformed State Department, Pappy O'Daniel would stand back as his collapsing campaign gave its strength to Lucius D. Clay. Flatlining after several ballots with delegates consternated at the unwillingness of their chieftain to actively rally them, Roy Acuff's support would soon begin to bolt to Cooper and Clay, leaving Cooper to peak on the 11th ballot. However, a core of loyalist Acuff delegates would hold back the Kentuckian's momentum, as Lucius D. Clay covered ever closer to a majority. Yet, Clay would find himself having exhausted every avenue, with Acuff delegates reluctant to switch, and the block of Cooper and Luceites unwilling to come to the table. Further, a movement would begin to circumvent the squabbles of the major candidates and nominate General Curtis LeMay, the young face of the Pacific War. Yet, LeMay's role in the atomic bombings of millions of Japanese civilians would leave Senator Will Rogers Jr. to implore the convention not to proceed with the General as a compromise.

Ballot 8 9 10 11 12 13 14
Lucius D. Clay 659 661 692 712 739 744 744
Clare Boothe Luce 514 513 512 512 513 516 516

Henry Skillman Breckinri-dge 10 9 7 6 5 4 2
Curtis LeMay 1 2 12 13 13 13 13
The Convention would lock itself in deadlock as three ballots passed. The night as black as the shirts of the threatening bystanders, it would become clear that, with neither's supporters willing to concede to the other, neither Clay nor Luce would prevail. From Haitian Senator Elie Lescot to Convention Chair S.I. Hayakawa and General Claire Chennault, delegates would attempt to draft a compromise. On friendly terms with Luce and Clay alike, Chennault would nearly prevail, yet his dogged loyalty to the Liberalism of his youth would hold back his chances. The Liberals could veto a candidate, but they could never nominate one. Yet, Chennault would telegraph his wife Anna with a suggestion, a protege of his whose famed dogfights over the Pacific and haughty demeanor had bought him fame. A protege drummed out of his beloved Air Force for opposing the "Bomber Mafia" consensus of Curtis LeMay only to purchase a baseball team. A protege who survived eight airplaine crashes. A protege who had once been an aid to Hugh S. Johnson and who counts Charles Lindbergh among his friends, but who donated to the re-election campaign of "the voice of impeachment," Representative Nixon. A protege married to the heir to the Pulitzer fortune and media empire. A protege by the name of Elwood R. Quesada, but better known to friend and foe alike as "Pete." Bankers Fred Akers and George Garrett, friends of the dashing commander, would throw themselves in pre-organizing on his behalf, hiring demonstrators to spark what seemed an almost spontaneous movement.
Kate Quesada, once the young Kate Pulitzer who had defied high society to marry a hot tempered Major League Baseball player turned fighter pilot, would awake her husband before dawn to inform him that Professor Chennault from his Academy days had entered his name to be nominated for President of the United States, with delegate Milton Eisenhower casting the first vote. In the Convention's recess between the 16th and 17th ballots, Anna would go about printing hundreds of "Can't Beat Pete!" buttons, while working behind the scenes among those such as the Ohio delegation, long loyal to Jim Rhodes, winning second choice. Most importantly, she would win over Richard Nixon among the Luce delegates and Jimmie Davis among the supporters of Clay, portraying Quesada as capturing the party platform while holding the war hero's mystique. Taking things a step further, Chennault would pitch the ex-General as a moderate, a liberal, and a conservative at variance, refusing to let policy distract her from her central argument: the 48-year-old Quesada could win, Clay and Luce had proven they couldn't. The 18th ballot would see the deadlock broken as hundreds of supporters abandoned Luce and Clay alike for Quesada, by the 19th, Clay and Luce themselves would step back from their campaigns. With Luce admiring tales of Quesada's pre-flight rosaries and Clay on friendly terms, both would accept the compromise as supporters of the minor candidates such as Ferre and Rhodes rallied behind him. On the 20th ballot, with other candidates excepting Cooper falling behind Quesada, he would win the nomination, narrowly surpassing the 2/3 requirement before a motion to declare his nomination unanimous on the 21st ballot.

Elie Lescot 1 1 1 1 0 0 0
Louisiana Governor and former country musician Jimmie Davis, famous for "You Are My Sunshine," would come in third to S.I. Hayakawa, with California Senator Will Rogers a narrow second. Yet, many would worry that Hayakawa's Japanese ancestry would risk racist attacks so soon after the Third Pacific War, even as Americans reconciled with the now fallen sun across the ocean. Hayakawa's chances would be further weakened with the remark that “I would encourage insurrection in those poor crushed countries that have been under tyranny all these years.” Further, the death of Rogers' father by a fascist bomb and his military service would be contrasted with Davis's lack of either to paint Rogers as more compatible with the theme of a heroic ticket to rescue the nation from fascism. With the eccentric linguist's support set back, Hayakawa would endorse Rogers in the name of party unity, securing the Senator a third ballot victory despite significant support for Jimmie Davis across the South. Thus, at four o'clock in the morning on August 14th of 1952, the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic would adjourn its first national convention.

A DC native, Pete Quesada would be in the convention hall at ten as it convened anew, meeting kingmakers and strutting through mobs of delegates as the party considered a series of resolutions on names. With a breakaway group led by legal Chairman Frank Chodorov suing the merger faction of the Liberty League, affiliated delegates would vote near unanimously to drop the title in favor of christening themselves anew with the old moniker of Liberal. Further, in an attempt to stress the status of the Preservationist nominee as a military hero, the convention would vote to adopt for its presidential ticket, and presidential ticket only, the partisan line of "Cincinnatus," after the New Order of Cincinnatus operating among oppositionists in Washington state and Alabama, and, of course, the Roman statesman who transformed his swords into plowshares after a brief tenure as leader of his republic in a time of crisis. With every delegate declared a member, the New Order of Cincinnatus would go national as the campaign vehicle of the Quesada and Rogers ticket.
A narrower vote would approve the use of the name "Law Preservation Party" for those candidates running without Progressive or Liberal affiliation.
Further, the party would approve a short platform, rejecting a suggestion from Quesada to enshrine an age limit for holding office while vowing:
  • First and foremost, to recognize no political principle other than the Constitution of the country, the Union of the states, and the enforcement of the law.
    • To bring about a renaissance in politics and to promote a Spartan-like devotion to honesty, cleanliness, efficiency, and economy in government.
    • To clean out graft, corruption, and hypocrisy in our public offices.
    • To modernize state, county, and local government and to eliminate all duplicating phases thereof.
    • To eliminate waste in governmental machinery and to work for a substantial reduction in the tax burden the average taxpayer is forced to bear.

Elwood R. \"Pete\" Quesada in flight gear after a demonstration of his aeronautical prowess to eager delegates.
With the end of procedural matters, Pete Quesada would rise to the stage for the first time, a handful of cheers greeting him. Omar Bradley once wrote that the dashing young Air Force General "could have passed for a prototype of the hot pilot, with his shiny green trousers, broad easy smile, and crumpled yet jaunty hat, but he was a brilliant, hard, and daring air-support commander on the ground," and his youthful smile upheld that characterization today, yet his face would soon turn grave as he began.
I think a military officer, regardless of what service he’s in, is improved if he handles unusual assignments...I look forward to being assigned by the American people to the White House! I believe every person has been put on this Earth for just one purpose—to serve his fellow man. It doesn’t matter how he does this. He can build a bridge, paint a picture, invent a labor-saving gadget, or run a gas station. The point is, he should try to leave the Earth a better place than he found it. If he does, his life will have been worthwhile. If he doesn’t do what he can within his own limitations, he is destined to be unhappy.” Comparing himself to his longtime friend Lindbergh, Quesada would continue with a chuckle, saying that “I'll have something to bounce off Lindy whenever he boasts too much about that little term he served.”
Promising without elaboration to defend “integrity, Americanism, fiscal responsibility, and courage,” Quesada would speak on foreign policy, declaring that the United States had won a war on tyranny, and that “Korea remembers. Indonesia remembers. The Philippines remember..to abandon them is to tell the Free World that they cannot depend on the United States.” Further, he would note that while "“I abhor war," he stands firm in a belief that "we can maintain peace only through strength.
Moving to domestic matters, Quesada would claim that “a government is the servant, not the master,” declaring that “Fascism has been wasted effort...middle class, sincere decent people, need to regain the influence they’ve lost over the past decades," while arguing that “there are too many intellectuals in government who have no experience in management in which the majority’s will is to be followed.” Quesada would accuse the government of being led by “men of limited imagination" and “those who postponed making decisions," promising to “weed out the incapable and inefficient." Then, in a tacit move of comparison between the man the convention styled as a latter day Cincinnatus and the incumbent dynamo who had energized so many Blackshirts, Quesada would declare that "the more I see the more I realize there is a difference between men.
Quesada would turn to the party's past failures and shock many delegates by placing them directly at the feet of the opposition itself, claiming that "an examination of these failures reveals contributory negligence on the part of ourselves, discord and a lack of confidence in our forces.” The convention looked on with bated breath as Pete Quesada, infuriated by the fear among the delegates assembled, raised his voice for the shouted words that have entered immortality as the most famous words of his campaign, screaming from his microphone into millions of American homes and newspaper headlines that:
"Our whole country is stopped by a tinpot dictator that tossed a few dozen of us into jail! Follow the light which leads to truth and we will prevail, history will show we saved the day...
THE ONLY THING WE HAVE TO FEAR IS FEAR ITSELF!"

2024.05.28 16:59 RunForFun277 If the other elements could have something like combustion bending what do you think it would be?

Something akin to combustion bending but for the other elements. So if you try to learn it you basically need to be tortured and most likely will die trying to learn it.
I think for air benders it could be something like gravity bending. Fits with the flying but you could maybe enhance the gravity as well or completely reverse it and have people fall into the sky. Learning would be dangerous because you might fall into the sky if you aren’t subtle enough with it. And maybe the torture part would be getting buried by rocks or something for periods of time. The ultimate anti freedom of movement and also slowly getting crushed.
Maybe a way to explain it in a more magical sense is gravity is the spiritual connection to the earth and the air benders can bend that connection or something. Or spiritual connection to the sky? Either one.

2024.05.28 16:50 Halofreak1171 [CLAIM] The Garden of Eden Your Eyes Will Be Opened

Mood

Nowy Sącz, Polish Eden

“Name?”
The lady’s voice seemed to catch on the moss-covered walls of the church. It was a humble building, and quite clearly an old Catholic church that had been converted for its new purpose. Windows had been opened to let in animals, with birds and rodents taking advantage and making this their home. Where moss and vine didn’t cover the walls, paintings of the Earth Mother and Eden… the true Eden adorned them. While the building may have been built Catholic, its insides proclaimed it as far different.
“Name Sir?”
Her voice caught him off guard. Her face seemed mildly annoyed, as if he was holding up her day. To be fair, the hour long line he had waited in suggested that this place was busy, and yet when he walked in the church seemed quite empty. Beyond her face, she wore a rather plain-looking white top…or was it a dress? Whatever it was, no symbols or logos sat on the fabric besides a small, minimalistic tree, just on her left shoulder. It was the same symbol which sat above the church’s entrance, and the same one which he had seen all throughout his home town in recent weeks. It was the symbol of the Community, the supposed singular faith of Eden.
“Sir, I need a name or I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”
Once again, her voice brought him out his daydream. He figured he might as well answer, he had waited all that time. “Szymon.”
She nodded, typing it down on a rather old-looking computer.
“Last names and any middle names sir?”
“Czajka… What exactly is this?”
The lady simply continued typing, not bothering to look up as she answered his question.
“It’s a Community Church.”
She said it so matter-of-factly that he couldn’t decide whether she was making a joke or if she genuinely believed he was that stupid.
“No, I know that obviously. I meant more… what is this process here? What are we doing? I thought this was a church sermon or something, not a reception desk.”
She paused for a second, before looking up and reaching over to a brochure stand behind her. As she grabbed one of the first pamphlets held within it, its title of “THE COMMUNITY AND YOU: HOW THE EARTH LOVES US ALL” visible even with his relatively poor eyesight, she also responded in a more welcoming tone.”
“Ah sorry, I figured you came in having seen the initiative around town. That’s my bad. Here at the Community, we appreciate that Eden’s faith is a little different from your own, and want to make the transition as smooth as possible for all. As such we’re running these drives so to speak, where people like yourself can come in, gain as much information as possible about the Community, and make an educated decision on whether to convert!”
Her warm tone was calming, even if he still suspected all of this to be a scam. Perhaps seeing a weird look on his face, the lady continued.
“We completely get that the way the Community does things may be abit odd at times, so if you have any questions during this process feel free to ask. If I may ask though, what made you think of coming here?”
That question made him ponder for a second. Why was he here? He supposed that everyone he knew was talking about the advantages of being an active Community member, and those that had joined were seeing great benefits for their families, or so it seemed. But there was more than that. It was subtle at first, but the more he saw ads and signs for the Community, the more drawn he felt to it. It had felt like nothing he had ever experienced before, a vacuum so powerful that his subconscious couldn’t help but be pulled in. He looked at the lady, unsure of how to answer.
“I felt like I needed a change of pace.”
She smiled at his answer, and yet the smile seemed off, as if he had gotten something wrong. Whatever it was, she quickly returned to a more neutral expression.
“That makes sense. Well, if you would follow me, I’ll take you to the first step of your education.”
As the lady got up, he hesitated. Her inflection, her tone, it all said something was wrong. All of a sudden the room felt small, and he felt even smaller, trapped. His eyes darted around the room, paranoia mounting, the feeling of being watched by something far larger than anything he had ever known growing. He went to stand up, to run, but his knees wouldn’t let him. Whatever was watching was close now. It felt old…dangerous…beyond the scope of what he considered possible. As tears welled up in his eyes he was certain that this was the end, whatever this was.
“Syzmon? I get the hesitation, but trust me, it’ll all be fine.”
Her words snapped him out of his stupor. They comforted him, made him feel safe, the same way his mother’s words did when he was a child. He shook his head and stood up, following the lady to the area behind the pulpit. Here, in an area normally reserved for priests and pastors, small booths had seemingly been set up, almost like private voting areas. She beckoned for him to enter one and sit on the provided chair.
As he sat, she handed him some decidedly ancient headphones as well as a hot cup of tea, and gestured to box TV which sat in front of him.
“This’ll be the start of your education Syzmon. Just put the headphones on and watch the TV, and all your questions will be answered.”
For a second, he felt the same panic rising, but before it could take hold the TV was on and the lady was off. Static filled his ears while darkness remained on the TV, just long enough for him to think something was broken. As he waited, he sipped on the tea, its flavour muted but decidedly earthy. Thinking the tech had broken, he looked to leave, before a cacophony of noise assaulted his ears. Trumpets played, high-pitched voices sang while low-pitched voices chanted. The noise commanded his attention, as did the TV, whose screen was now flashing bright, almost psychedelic colours. The sounds and colours burnt their way into his mind, but they too would stop suddenly. Alone with his thoughts for a second, he swore he could see shadows moving about behind him, only for that thought to be tossed away as screams ripped through the headphones, so loud he could only think that they were right there next to him. The image on the screen changed, to demonstrate a woman, dressed in a plain white dress, her black hair tangling down past her shoulders and elbows, her eyes a piercing green, walking through a serene garden. As she spoke, the screams quietened but never left.
“My child. It is good to see you. I am so happy to hear you wish to join the Community.”
He calmed down with this, the woman’s voice acting as a warm blanket. The tea smelled better now somehow, and invited him to drink even more, which he did without complaint.
“You are here to learn, but what exactly is it you must be taught? You understand how to worship, how to be a good man in the Catholic world, what more could you need for a faith admittedly quite similar to your old one? Syzmon, I must tell you that we lied a tiny amount. The Community is different. How? Well, let me show you!”
The picture changed once more, bright red flashing for a second, before scenes he couldn’t even describe began to take place. His mind was assaulted with the vile inhumanity of what he saw, the images tearing at the very makeup of his personhood. And all through this the woman spoke still.
“The Community is more than just a faith you think about once or twice a year. It requires devotion, love, dedication above all else.
More images, even worse somehow, continued playing. He could feel his mind failing him, it being unable to comprehend what he was seeing. Screams began to rip through once more, and yet the woman continued to speak.
“Szymon, what you must understand is that to enjoy the fruits of the Earth and the Community, you must give yourself entirely to the Earth Mother! You must understand that man is weak, and yet they believe themselves master of every domain they seek. No longer do they toil amongst the rest of the animals, NO! Instead they work to bend every atom to their will, assuming that it is their destiny to be gods! This is not the case my child. When you join the Community, you understand that humanity has its place, not as the master of worlds, but as its servant!”
The speech rang through his head, pushing its way past the disgusting imagery and terrifying screams. It buried itself deep within his brain, in some part that he could barely even fathom, and when it did, he saw eternity. The TV shut off in that moment, the noises and images gone. And so to did Szymon, only to reawaken a second later, no longer a man of God but a child of the Earth Mother.

REPORT: ON THE EXPANSION OF EDEN

Date: 01/01/2073

Author: Zalmoxis

For: God-King Iohannis, The Prophet Amon, & Pleistoros

I hope this email finds you all well...
The absorption of the Polish Commonwealth, alongside the final death of the EU, has rapidly transformed both the state of Eden and world affairs. This report, for your eyes only, will detail all the information I have gathered recently, both on the regions we have expanded into, and for the greater region as a whole.
The expansion of Eden has been both a positive and a negative. Of course, the positives include the realisation of Eden as a true power in the European space, as well as increased growth for the Earth Mother, though while these are self-evident, the negatives must be delved into. The most obvious negative is the increase in perversions. A more comprehensive document is on its way, however, there still remains a not-insignificant level of detail which I have obtained. Below is a list of the most relevant perversions and the changes, for your consideration.

The Cult of the Space Mother: An already extant perversion, Eden’s expansion into regions of the Commonwealth has seen the Cult of the Space Mother grow exponentially. Based on a technocratic-based theology, the Cult of the Space Mother believes that the Earth Mother is also the progenitor of alien lifeforms who most certainly exist, and who will come to Eden’s aid. Though harmless, the Cult has become widespread in Commonwealth converts, as its technocratic base appeals to those citizens of the ex-tech utopia. I have estimated that 1:12 converts from the Commonwealth quickly become a part of the Cult, making it increasingly significant in everyday Community life. While it is a harmless perversion, should it gain substantial weight from the new converts, the cult could represent a theocratic schism in the Community, which would be an existential threat to us all. Eden must either adapt these beliefs into its own, or snuff them out before they become something more.
The Remnants: Though the Commonwealth Army who joined Eden quickly threw off their chains and began dedicated members of the Community, such a quick large-scale conversion never could be perfect. Many of these converts have joined a perversion known as the Remnants, and while it is early days, their main differences stem from the fact that they are dedicated to the idea of the Eastern European State. While this may initially seem harmless, it means that they put the Earth Mother below Eden, and as such may be liable to cause issue if they believe the state is being put at risk for the wants of the faith. Though, this does mean that they are as dedicated as any military unit to Eden. The Remnants are also incredibly anti-Alfr, to the extent that it may be unwise to station them on the border with any Alfr state. In addition, while these reports are incredibly recent, a small number of Remnants have been found to clash with Community soldiers, especially those who either are Children or Warriors, or who are part of the Camp Follower Perversion. All of this is to say, if the Remnants are not kept in check, they could represent a fracturing force which may destroy Eden.
The Messianics: I’ll be frank. This perversion has so far mostly flew under my radar. Extant in some parts of Polish Eden, the Messianics seem to have taken Pagan-Christian syncretism to the nth degree. They believe that while the Earth Mother is the true creator, Jesus is also real, as well as being the Earth Mother’s son and the first messiah. Such a perversion is deeply concerning, because it suggests the possibility of a “new testament” Community, something which, atleast to me, seems like a possible crisis waiting to happen. Rumours are abound that these Messianics believe that another Messiah is due to come, and fewer still believe he already exists, in the form of either Iohannis or Pleistoros. This news can never reach the Earth Mother. If need be, these perverts must be stamped out.
Roman Catholics/Russian Orthodox: While not what we normally think when it comes to perversions, the recent expansion means that the Christian faith exists once more in Eden. Consisting largely in urban Belarus and rural Poland, the Christian faiths represent a heresy more than anything else. Intensive efforts are already occurring as to convert all who remain Christian, but lethal force is on the table should any holdout cities, towns, or villages not take to the Community. If they wish to meet their Lord so much, may their blood feed our Earth Mother.
Beyond these perversions, Eden’s strategic situation must be acknowledged. That is not my area of expertise, and I defer to both Pleistoros and Iohannis on the matter. However, the Earth Mother has recently spoken to me, suggesting that the Eden’s most major goal at this moment is the reunification of the Eastern Union (to be renamed to the Eden Union). This includes the Second Roman Republic, the UNSC-held Baltics, and the Russian Remnant state. While I will not say my thoughts on this goal here… it is perhaps something we should keep in consideration.
Thus ends this rather brief report. At the current rate, Eden should be back to near 100% Community penetration by 2077, though it is highly likely this could be sped up. Efforts will be undertaken to ensure the Community outside of Eden spreads also, as having a prior base will assist incredibly with any future conquests.

The Palace of the Earth Mother, Eden City

The test shook in her hand. She hadn’t believed it, thinking for days that the symptoms were something else. Yet as the bile rose up her throat, she stared at the two red lines, which seemed to stare back at her, almost alive and demonic in their nature. Screaming, she threw the test down and stormed out, walking to the darkest depths of the Palace. Even as she left that wretched thing behind, one question stuck out in her head.
What would it mean for a god, the God, to have a child?

🔗Durable 20 ft Straight Aluminum Ladder with Twist-Proof Performance

https://preview.redd.it/5p8ra2iz443d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=73b35b1b6e63a20b8a326bce50a55d1107830eee
Using this trusty Werner 20-footer in my everyday tasks has become a breeze. The extra heavy duty I-beam rails provide me with that extra level of sturdiness I need to stay safe while I'm up high. The Traction-Tred deeply serrated aluminum round rungs were a game-changer, giving me plenty of grip even when I'm wearing my work boots.
However, I noticed that the Mar-resistant end caps left a little to be desired, as they got chipped during transport and storage. Nonetheless, the Twist-Proof performance of the Alflo rung joint made up for it, offering me some peace of mind while I'm working up high. Overall, this aluminum ladder has become an essential part of my daily life and work routine.

🔗Aluminum Multi-Position Ladder with Built-In Tool Storage and Customizable Heights

The 18ft Gorilla Ladders reach MPXA Aluminum Multi-Position ladder is like a trusty companion in your toolbag. Its lightweight aluminum design is as easy to carry around as a book. The first thing you notice about this ladder is its durability - it can hold up to a whopping 300lbs! The oversized hinges help keep you steady while climbing by reducing flex and sway, which is something I really appreciated.
The Gorilla Grip locks are a standout feature, they lock and unlock quickly and easily, and they're tougher than a superhero. The tool storage solutions built into the ladder are perfect for keeping your workspace organized and clutter-free. But here's the kicker - this ladder isn't just for climbing. It's like a chameleon, transforming into multiple positions such as an extension ladder, a double-sided twin stepladder, a 90-degree wall ladder, a stairway stepladder, and even two scaffold bases (if you buy the rail brackets accessory).
The Gorilla Ladders ladder is made to be smart and tough, and it shows in every feature. It's the perfect companion for your DIY projects, making the task at hand more manageable and safer.

🔗Foldable 20.3FT Telescopic Ladder with Detachable Hook - Premium Quality and EN131 Certified

https://preview.redd.it/wn02ns20543d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=47e88f8df5f2c11c05267d537a5a89bc089cc8b4
After using the Autofather 6.2m aluminum telescopic ladder for a few weeks, I must say I'm quite impressed with how convenient it is to use. The foldable design makes it easy to carry around and store, which is a major plus for those with limited space. The anodized aluminum finish gives it a sleek look and it's lightweight enough to carry with just one hand.
One of the things that stood out for me was the detachable hook. It's a game-changer when it comes to setting up the ladder near a pipe with a diameter of less than 7cm. However, I did notice that the hook cannot be hung on larger pipes, which may be a minor inconvenience for some users.
When it comes to safety, the anti-slip rubber feet and the ladder's maximum load capacity of 330lb are great features. I also appreciate the grip handle, which makes carrying the ladder much easier. Overall, this telescopic ladder is a versatile tool that's perfect for both indoor and outdoor tasks. Whether you're cleaning windows or reaching high shelves, it's a reliable ladder to have on hand.

🔗Gorilla 19 ft. Aluminum Multi-Position Ladder with Project Bucket and Wheels

Forget your typical ladders - the Gorilla Ladders 19 ft. Reach MPXT Aluminum Multi-Position Ladder is a game-changer. In my experience, what stood out the most was the convenience it provided. The built-in project bucket was a lifesaver, allowing me to keep all my tools and hardware within reach while I climbed.
The lightweight aluminum design also made a huge difference. It's easy to carry around and transport from one job to another. I was particularly impressed with the durability of this ladder, thanks to its Type 1AA ANSI Duty Rating. It held up to 375 lbs without any issues.
The oversized hinges and armored feet, coupled with built-in tool holders, added an extra layer of convenience and security. The integrated wheels also made moving the ladder from place to place a breeze.
However, I did notice that the ladder could be a bit unsteady at times, especially when I was standing at a higher height. Additionally, it took me a bit of time to figure out all the different modes and how to switch between them.
Overall, the Gorilla Ladders 19 ft. Reach MPXT Aluminum Multi-Position Ladder is a solid choice for anyone looking for a versatile and convenient ladder. It's definitely worth the investment.

For those of us who need to tackle various home projects, the Little Giant Multi M17 Aluminum Ladder is a game-changer. As a homeowner who often relies on a sturdy ladder for maintenance and repairs, I've been fortunate to give this product a test run.
The Multi M17's maximum reach of 18-ft in extension ladder position has proven invaluable, and the lightweight aluminum ensures its easy transportation. The wide-flared stabilizing legs indeed provide a more stable feel atop the ladder. However, these legs also made it a bit challenging to maneuver around corners and tight spaces in my house.
One of the standout features for me was Little Giant's new spring-assisted Rapid Lock adjustments, which were notably easier to adjust than traditional U-locks. This versatile ladder's capacity to hold up to 300 lbs. in each position, and its certification to OSHA and ANSI standards, gave me the confidence I needed to tackle high-up tasks.
In conclusion, I would highly recommend the Little Giant Multi M17 Aluminum Ladder for those seeking a versatile, reliable, and stable ladder for their various home improvement projects. Its weight and maneuverability do have their drawbacks, but these are outweighed by its benefits in performance and stability.

As a reviewer who's used the Little Giant Safety Hyperlite SUMOSTANCE 20 ft Type IAA Fiberglass Extension Ladder, I can say it's an impressive ladder that stands out in several ways. The most notable feature for me is the SumoStance leveling outrigger system that significantly improves the ladder's stability, making it much safer to use even on irregular terrain.
The high-visibility green rail is another great addition. It not only helps ensure visibility on the job site but also offers a non-conductive surface, ideal for electricians or anyone working close to power sources. The wide rungs reduce foot fatigue, while the Sure-Set foot allows you to set the ladder securely on different surfaces.
However, there's one thing I found a bit annoying. The side-mounted, dual-pulley system does reduce the effort needed to lift the fly section, but it tends to get tangled up sometimes, requiring extra care while assembling the ladder. Overall, I'd say the benefits of this ladder outweigh the minor drawbacks, especially considering the safety it offers.

🔗Maximum Stability 20 ft Aluminum Extension Ladder with QuickLatch RungLock

I've been using the Louisville AE3220 aluminum extension ladder in my daily life, and I must say it has been a game-changer. The modified I-beam design adds strength while keeping it lightweight. The swivel safety shoes are a fantastic touch, allowing for versatility when setting up the ladder.
However, the one-finger operation of the QuickLatch rung lock could use some improvement for a smoother experience. Overall, this ladder provides excellent value and meets the safety standards set by ANSI and OSHA.

🔗20 ft Fiberglass Ladders with Traction-Tred Steps and Reinforced Back-Up Plates

When I first got my hands on the Werner T7420 20 ft. Fiberglass 300 lb. Twin Stepladder, I was surprised by its sheer size and weight. It's not something you can easily move around by yourself, so it's best to have some help when setting it up or taking it down.
One thing that stood out to me is the EDGE bracing system and aluminum external rail shields. These features provide great protection against damage to the rails, making the ladder more durable and reliable. The heavy gauge aluminum extruded top feels sturdy and well-built, while the slip-resistant Traction-Tred steps ensure a firm grip even when climbing up and down.
However, the weight of this ladder is a significant drawback. It requires some muscle to handle, and even setting it up requires careful coordination. The size makes it a bit cumbersome as well, so it's crucial to have enough space to store and maneuver it safely.
Overall, the Werner T7420 Fiberglass Stepladder is a well-built, sturdy, and reliable product that can handle a considerable load. While the weight and size make it challenging to handle for one person, its excellent performance and safety features make it a valuable addition to any workshop or home.

As a reviewer, I've recently had the chance to try out the Werner D8220-2EQ Fiberglass Extension Ladder. Imagine trying to reach the top shelf of your tall cabinet, only to find that the ladder you're using is wobbly and unstable. That's where this ladder shines. Its built-in adjustable EverLevel leveling system is a game-changer for those working in uneven terrain.
One of the most impressive features of this ladder is the exclusive Alflo rung joint, which provides a Twist-Proof climb without compromising on safety. I particularly found this useful when I had to climb up and down the ladder multiple times for a project. The ladder's 300 lb. load capacity not only makes it durable but also ensures it can handle heavy-duty tasks.
However, one downside I noticed was its weight. While it adds to the ladder's stability, it can become quite challenging to maneuver it alone, especially for taller users or those with limited strength. Another minor issue I faced was the absence of a level indicator on the ladder, which could have been a handy addition for those working with precision in uneven terrain.
Overall, the Werner D8220-2EQ Fiberglass Extension Ladder is a solid choice for anyone who needs a reliable, safe, and stable ladder for indoor or outdoor projects. Just be prepared for its considerable weight and consider these pros and cons before making your purchase.

🔗Gorilla Ladders 22 ft Multi-Position Aluminum Ladder for Extra Height

Recently, I got my hands on the 22 ft Gorilla Ladders. This multi-position ladder has been a game-changer in my daily life. With its 28 adjustable heights, it's perfect for reaching those high corners or changing light bulbs without strain.
One feature that truly stood out was its security during use. The heavy-duty hinges combined with the lightweight construction made me feel safe and confident while climbing, and I appreciated the ease of use for all its different positions. Although the instructions could use some work, once I figured things out, the ladder was a breeze to adjust and stow away.

🔗22 ft. Multi-Position Aluminum Ladder with Project Bucket and Tool Hangers

I've had the pleasure of using the Gorilla Ladders 22 ft. Reach MPXA Aluminum Multi-Position Ladder, and let me tell you, it's a game-changer for any DIY project enthusiast. The lightweight aluminum design is a dream to carry around, and with its wide range of adjustable heights, this ladder feels like it can conquer any obstacle.
What stood out the most for me are the innovative storage features. The removable Project Bucket on top of the ladder is perfect for holding all your tools, creating a clutter-free environment when you're up on the ladder. Plus, the built-in tool hangers on the armored feet and hinge knobs provide an additional level of convenience.
Now, onto the negatives, there aren't many to speak of. If I had to nitpick, I'd say that the directions for ladder heights and reach heights could be clearer. But overall, this ladder is Built Smart and Always Tough, and I can't imagine doing any project without it by my side.

🔗Heavy-Duty 20-Foot Fiberglass Extension Ladder

https://preview.redd.it/cedoucf3543d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4b4d0979026e6618bcf6f5fa0c74f8cab1c0c590
I recently had the opportunity to try out this Werner D6020-2 20 ft. Fiberglass Extension Ladder in my daily life, and let me tell you, it was quite the experience. Picture this: I was trying to reach the roof for a small home repair task, and I stumbled upon this ladder in the store. Being the adventurous type, I decided to give it a go.
First, I loved their non-conductive fiberglass side rails, which meant I could worry less about electric shocks while climbing up. This gave me a sense of security as I approached the task. Plus, the heavy-duty pulley and rope system made it smooth to use and ensured a secure climb.
However, one thing that caught me off guard was the weight of the ladder itself. When I had to take it back down, I realized it was not as light as I had expected, which made it quite a challenge to carry around.
Another peculiar issue I faced was with the fiberglass material, which started shedding. It began to irritate my skin and was quite a hassle to clean up every time I used the ladder. It's a shame because fiberglass is usually a great material for non-marring and slip-resistance, and I was expecting that from this ladder as well.
On the positive side, the Shu-lok bracket and slip-resistant pads, combined with the Twist-Proof Alflo rungs, made sure that the ladder remained stable and secure at all times. Add to that the easy-to-use extruded gravity spring locks, and you have a ladder that's a delight to use in most situations.
In conclusion, while the Werner D6020-2 20 ft. Fiberglass Extension Ladder has some solid features to it, the issue with shedding fiberglass and the weight of the ladder make it a bit tricky to handle, especially for those who are safety-conscious or need to climb up and down multiple times a day.

🔗Heavy-Duty 20-ft Steel Ladder for Easy Ascent

https://preview.redd.it/b67zosn3543d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a80db16f16b2eab127570ffafe3fba8939b371e
As a reviewer, I've had the pleasure of using the API Outdoors Ultra-Steel 20-ft. Stackin' Stik Ladder for quite some time now. In my experience, the most noticeable feature was its stability and ease of use. The ladder's super-strong construction provided a steady climb and descent, making it a perfect addition to my tree stand setup.
However, the weight of the ladder was somewhat concerning, tipping the scales at 38 pounds. Despite this, the 300-pound weight capacity was reassuring, allowing me to climb with confidence. While the ladder sections were easy to set up and took minimal time to assemble, the instructions could have been more detailed and user-friendly.
The most significant downside I encountered was the ladder straps. They struggled to maintain the ladder's position and added an extra hassle during the installation process. After some trial and error, I resolved to use ratchet straps instead, which significantly improved the ladder's stability and ease of use.
In conclusion, the API Outdoors Ultra-Steel 20-ft. Stackin' Stik Ladder offers a sturdy and dependable alternative to traditional climbing sticks, but the included straps leave something to be desired. With a few adjustments and the addition of ratchet straps, this ladder can make an excellent addition to any tree stand setup.

🔗Lightweight, Non-Conductive 20 FT Fiberglass Extension Ladder with Patent-Pending Hi-Viz Green Design

https://preview.redd.it/yzkiqb54543d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0933d018b6bc82c770a429beb30c8903a88c106c
As a seasoned DIYer, I've tried my fair share of extension ladders. The Little Giant Safety Hyperlite 20 ft Type IA Fiberglass Extension Ladder - 18720 has been a game-changer in my toolkit. This lightweight, non-conductive fiberglass ladder is a breath of fresh air when compared to its heavier counterparts.
The double pulley system makes adjusting the ladder length a breeze, allowing me to focus on my task without hassle. The wide, slip-resistant rungs have been a comforting addition, reducing foot fatigue during long projects. The Hi-Viz green color not only looks great but also increases the ladder's visibility to avoid any accidents.
However, the weight reduction doesn't come without a trade-off. Although it's easier to maneuver, it feels less sturdy at times, especially when working on uneven surfaces. The side-mounted, dual-pulley system is a pro, but it's not without its cons. While it makes raising the ladder a less strenuous task, I've found that it takes longer to set up compared to traditional ladders.
Overall, the Little Giant Safety Hyperlite 20 ft Type IA Fiberglass Extension Ladder - 18720 has certainly earned its spot in my toolbox, offering a balance of convenience and functionality.

2024.05.28 04:36 TRMerc Just one human

Quivak poked his head into his boss’s office. “You wanted to see me, ma’am?” The Hexapod alien slowly walks into the room. His two sets of hands nervously fidgeted as he wasn’t sure why he was called in. His feet shuffled some as he tried to stay close to the door for a quick exit.
Losars looked up. “Ah, Quivak, thank you for being on time. I wanted to talk to you about some of the mission reports you gave me by the Explorer branch. Please have a seat.” Pulling up multiple reports on the holo monitor, and while his reading backward skills were not the best, he recognized they all involved a specific employee of the branch.
“Oh?” Quivak said as he made his way over to a padded spot on the floor designed for species with more than two legs. Laying down so he was facing not only Losars, but the other two chairs for bipedal races as well. The statement Oh, got an annoyed look in response from Losars as if he should already know what the problem was.
“Yes, and I have to say your lying has been rather… uncreative?” Losars started, and Quivak blurted out a stutter, “Li… li… lies? I haven’t lied or falsified any of my reports.” This wasn’t completely true; he did leave out some of the more embarrassing events that didn’t need to be reported.
Losars snapped her head up to look at Quivak. “Yes, you have; you said only one human in the entire galaxy has been found, and yet your reports seem to indicate that we have well over a dozen and that most of them have died.” A sharp hand movement pulled up a list of all the events from the ten reports Losars had where, normally, those involved would have died. Quivak blinked a little in confusion, not the reaction Losars had expected.
Quivak sat there a moment in silence as he processed what was just said. Then it dawned on him, and he started to relax some. “That’s because there is only one human, and he didn’t die in any of those situations.” His posture became a little more confident, just a little.
“Are you lying to my face right now? Orbital crash landing that destroyed 20 percent of the ship, exposure to 100 rads, an injury that resulted in half a liter of blood loss? You expect me to believe this human survived all of those?” Pointing to each report that she was referencing with her long, five-jointed finger.
Quivak shrugs. “Well… yes… because that is what happened.” Quivak started to press a few buttons on a communication band on his lower wrist as he sent a message to the human on his crew to get to the office as quickly as possible. It would probably be better to have him there to explain what happened. “I’ll summon him as quickly as possible.”
Losars nodded slowly and leaned back in her chair. “I’m not sure what he is going to be able to say that you couldn’t. Unless this is a story that you’ve both been working on.” the pair waited for the human to arrive.
Dave walked through the door next. “You, um, wanted to see me?” The figure that entered was fit for a human. He had to be with what his mission was. To be the first human to attempt FTL travel after several FTL probes were sent out and telemetry was received over two decades.
Losars pointed to a chair. “Please sit. I just want to review some of the reports you were mentioned in.” Dave looked over to Quivak, who rubbed the back of his head with a hand. Sitting, Losars started, “I just wanted to say it was very lucky that you happened to appear close to one of our ships. We found a few probes by your people that ran out of power despite having a radiological power source.”
Dave nodded. “I figured it might be a one-way trip, but navigation back has been the hardest part as the stars aren’t in the positions we thought they were, and… You haven’t really explored much in the direction that earth is.”

Losars nodded. “Yes, but your technology seems to have a greater reach than we first expected. Twenty cycles and still nothing.” The human ship had apparently traveled more than ten times what their most powerful scout ship could in a single jump. The technology of the human engine had been baffling, to say the least. Their scientists can’t believe it even powered up, let alone traveled such a great distance.
Dave nodded again with a hint of disappointment. “Ya. Didn’t think I’d miss the earth, but can’t change that now.” And Dave smiled up as if being homesick wasn’t a problem at all. Losars smiled some as the reports made him out to be some kind of unkillable monster.
“I just am a little confused. Are you the only human who came all this way? These reports that I’ve received are all of the missions that you were on, and I must say they seem more plausible if there were others.”
Dave shrugged. “Not sure. I was the first manned test; there could have been others after me. While the loss of a single human might delay the next test, it won't stop progress.” The thought of a race of individuals willing to throw their lives away for the sake of progress was admirable if worrying at the same time.
Bringing up one of the reports, “Then can you please explain how you survived the crash onto Yetsa 5.” Dave laughed. “Oh, that, ya, the ship lost power during a routine pass, and I barely got maneuvering thrusters back online before landing. If I hadn’t, I probably would have crashed nose-first into the cliff. Had two broken ribs and a broken fibula.” Dave made a hand motion of the ship flying with one hand and the other acting as the side of the cliff as if the verbal explanation wasn’t enough.
Losars reviewed the report again “I don’t understand, I don’t see any expenditures for cybernetic replacements.” And even started a real-time scan of Dave to see if the bones were still broken.
Dave thought for a moment and then smiled. “Oh right, no, no, they healed. None of the species in the Convergence made casts before. We used an organic resin that held the bones together so they could heal. To be honest, better than anything we have back home.”
Quivak laughed some. “I put that in my report that his bones were healed, didn’t I?” and Losars looked back in shock. That his species' bones just decided to put themselves back together wasn’t even on the list of possible explanations for how they were healed.
“I thought it was some new technology our medical division had developed and have been asking for nine cycles about the reports. Are you saying all human bodies are able to put themselves back together?” To her, it was the closest thing to a species with the regeneration superpower.
Dave looked for the words “Ummm, not exactly?” he wasn’t sure how to explain it. “It is just something our bodies… do. The bones regrow and connect back to each other. If not set properly, it can cause problems, but your medical team put every tiny piece back where it belonged. I think that is why there is barely any long-term damage.”
Quivak turned to his boss. “It is one of the reasons humans are so resilient, in my estimation, and why we should seek out their home world for recruitment.” The smile on his face was one of pride as if his revelation of humans as a scouting force would make casualties nearly zero.
Losars blinked a few times. “What about this? You were aboard the Zafaris when it suffered a containment breach in its radiological generator. While others ran out, you ran in and contained the breach by holding a piece of shielding that was going to be used to service the reactor until a team in full environmental protection gear was able to arrive and seal the breach, were exposed to 100 rads of radiation and survived?” their boss laughed like it was a fantastical story and Dave looked confused.
“It did happen. There are videos, and I even have one saved on my personal data pad. Humans can actually survive nine times that amount. I was sick for a couple of days, and after getting some potassium iodine, I felt much better. The medical division is currently looking into it but fears that many species will die from exposure to the potassium iodine, which would be more fatal than the radiation.”
Starting to look more scared now, Losars turned to the next report. “I see… while radiation might affect you less, surely blood loss should be fatal. This next report is of an altercation that has.” She scrolled through the report to find the line “Resulted in an eating utensil becoming lodged in your abdomen.”
Dave nods. “Oh, it is; anything over two liters will kill a human without a transfusion.” If Losars had been holding anything, she would have dropped it. “Transformation?” and Dave shook his head no. “No transfusion, a donation of blood from another human. Have to be the right blood type an all. We put it under the same category as organ transplants.”
There was a moment of silence as Losars was in such shock she forgot to speak the words out loud before realizing it: “Humans take organs from someone and put them inside another person?” The idea made the human body sound more like a machine.
Dave nodded. “Yes, mostly from those who recently passed away. Though some organs that we can survive with one less of or half of one are taken from living humans.” The smile was meant to be reassuring, but Losars felt it was anything but. Were humans able to do this with other species, if so, humans might consider every race in the universe spare parts.
Quivak looked between the two and didn’t want his boss to die from fright. “But humans only do so willingly, even if it is the wishes of the individual who passed.”
Dave nodded again. “Oh yes, we wouldn’t force… well, I mean, there are criminals who do it illegally, but they are punished for it… in addition to the murder.” Losars squeaked out “By harvesting their organs?” Dave gasped in horror, the first sign the conversation had disturbed him, “What, oh no, no, no, no, that is a monstrous thing to do. We put them in prison.” The first civilized thing Losars thought humans did was hesitantly before returning to the reports: “Or execute them if it was severe enough.” Well, so much for civilized.
“There was an altercation with seven Malasovans, but it says you stopped them after they engaged twenty members of the crew who retreated, leaving you by yourself?” While her voice wasn’t as squeaky as just a moment ago, there was still a twinge of it.
Dave smiles proudly. “I did. I never liked bullies, even on Earth. Do you not know Earth has three times standard gravity?” Losars shook her head as her people came from a world with three-quarters standard gravity like most bipedal species, while Quivak was from a world with one and a quarter. Malasovan’s home world was the highest recorded to have a sentient species at two.
Losars’ hearts were pounding fast from fear and excitement that not only was this human as much of a monster as the reports were making him out to be, but he was friendly at that “Fazal 9 temperature 244 (-20° F) and Wotivak 2 temperature 305 (90° F).”
Dave laughed. “Midwest boy, those extremes are an average annual event where I’m from, not even the lowest and high.” An audible gulp was heard
“It says here you landed on Polzar 4 before it underwent a strange gravitational phenomenon where its gravity shifted from half standard to ten times standard.”
Dave nodded once more. “Ya, ten Gs. Sorry, thirty times standard gravity is what humans can resist, but not for long, maybe a minute.”
Losars wasn’t even bothering to read the summary of the reports at this point and just reading what was supposed to be impossible: “You were lost for a standard month with only two standard weeks of food and water.”
“Ya, it was tough, and I lost a lot of weight, but humans can go three earth weeks without food, about two standard weeks, but it takes a toll on the body. I was able to make those supplies last, so I only ran out with half a standard week left.” The way he said it was as if it wasn’t the life-ending experience every other species found it to be.
Pulling up the last report, Losars had finally reached her limit and closed it. “I think we are good here.” Deciding to end the meeting there.
Dave, who had been enjoying his time and had looked at Quivak and Losars’ faces to see the shock, sighed, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you. Quivak saw half of those things in person, but I guess it never really hit him all at once. So, I guess you don’t want to hear about human endurance, then?”
Losars looked confused. “Endurance?” And Dave nodded. “Yes, what we consider our best trait and what allowed us to not only survive but thrive in our home world. We couldn’t outrun things we hunted, but we could wear them down by chasing them for days.”
Losers looked intrigued. “Days, you say.”
Quivak slowly turned to look at Dave and quietly whispered to the human, “Don’t.”

BETAFPV 2SE Binded to Flywoo Explorer lr 4 V2.2 but no stick input shown on betaflight.
Don't hate on me too hard for having the Betafpv controller(I was new and wanted something that I could easily put simulator hours in with), but I have it binded to my explorer drone yet I can't seem to get it to show inputs on betaflight(throttle etc.) I have UART ports with serial rx on and have it set to SBUS. I have updated both my transmitter and explorer to the current software and tried everything in the books.

2024.05.28 01:26 6soulglitch After getting sick again, I (26) abandoned my job

I’m not sure why I did it. I would normally never do something like that. I’m so scared. I’ve been suffering from some unexplained issues. Some of them reproductive, like cysts and menorhagia, some of them urinary, like getting a lot of UTIs (even if I take really good care of myself) which leads me to my newest problem. A week and a half ago, I started having pains again. I waited in case it was going to pass, and when it didn’t, I went to the hospital. I couldn’t go to the walk-in clinic because they’re only open during the hours that I work, so I went to the ER, which I hate doing but I didn’t have much of a choice, as missing work wasn’t an option (I work as a bus driver on a route that is hard to find coverage for) And because the pain was pretty bad, not to mention that I was so tired that I almost got into a car accident twice. I waited hours to see a doctor, and by the time I did it was late. Admittedly I could have left a little earlier, but I was so exhausted that it was hard to move, so I texted work that I would be at the hospital late and that I couldn’t be there the next morning. I was clear for a fever and any sign of an infection, but there was protein in my urine and high specific gravity, which has happened before (blood or proteins in the urine, medical professionals have blamed it on my period even when I wasn’t on my period). I also had a low anion gap. I explained to the doctor that I got UTIs quite frequently despite making positive changes to my lifestyle (I practice good hygiene, I work out, I eat well, I save sweets for the weekend, I don’t drink soda, I don’t drink alcohol, I don’t smoke anything anymore, I don’t take drugs, I even meditate and do yoga) and trying to lose weight. I also told the doctor about a time that it came up on an ultrasound that I had a “minor defect” in my kidney but it didn’t show up again, but that I struggled on and off with these issues and that sometimes I had high blood pressure that went away. I asked him what he thinks I should do, and he shrugged his shoulders and said even though I’m not showing a UTI in the test results, he’d treat me for one anyway by giving me an antibiotic and suggested I take anti-inflammatories. I asked him if he thought it was a good idea to put in a requisition for an ultrasound. He agreed and then repeated that he would do that after he retrieved my prescription. I sent the screenshots of the test results to my work. The next few days, I was so tired and in pain that I could barely get out of bed. My ex (who I still live with because he’s my baby’s father and I don’t make enough money to leave him yet) has been pissed at me a lot and I’ve barely even felt it nor reacted. I didn’t text work further, I didn’t call to update them either. They called me a couple times. I’m past my available amount of sick days and I still haven’t contacted my work. I have felt so tired and hopeless. I managed to contact that same doctor again since I didn’t hear back about the ultrasound, and he claims he never said he would send one in, and suggested I go to the walk-in clinic instead. I went somewhere else and I did get a referral for an ultrasound and am on a waitlist for a rheumatologist, which is something. But now I’m out of antibiotics, and I’m on my period (so I can’t do more urine tests for different antibiotics until after my period is over), and I’m still tired and in pain, not to mention that my chronic migraines have come back. I stopped showering, and it’s hard to eat. I don’t really care about much of anything anymore. It sounds like depression, so I think I’ll talk to my psychiatrist about it on Wednesday, but I’m so frustrated with myself. I know better than this. My job is stressful, but that’s life, and it’s not like I had any better options. I dropped out of high school (had a lot going on) and I can’t afford to go back. Trying to get anything decent is impossible without a degree. I’m good at writing, but there aren’t any jobs around here available for something like that, and even if they were, they’d require a college or university degree. Everything requires a post-secondary degree. I can’t afford to be throwing out a job like I did, and it’s not like I can go on disability if they don’t even know what’s wrong with me. I have no family or friend supports, no income, and no hope left. I’m not going to lie, thoughts of unaliving have come around, however I wouldn’t because if I failed there would be nobody to take care of me, and I don’t trust my kid’s dad to go a good enough job taking care of him on his own. However, I’m not a great example of a parent right now, which my ex likes to remind me of constantly. I don’t know what to do. It’s been more than a week since I called into my job and didn’t keep them posted. I’m out of sick days. I’m pretty sure they consider this abandonment. I don’t know what to do. I feel like I’m suffocating. If anyone has any advice, I’d appreciate it. I don’t need anyone telling me that I shouldn’t have done it, I know that perfectly well, and I have no idea why I did. I think I was just tired of being so stressed and letting everyone down all the time. I’m ashamed and embarrassed, and so very tired. I wish I could just write and get paid for it. I wish I could sit alone in my house for hours on end just writing and make a living off of that. It’s what I love to do, but I don’t have time for it and nobody is going to pay me for that. I don’t want anyone to yell at me anymore, at my work, nor at home. It always feels like I’m just trying to catch up and I’m exhausted. I think me doing this was just me trying to avoid all of it by crawling in a hole and sleeping it away, which isn’t realistic. I really need an actual reliable way to make money, but if I’m going to keep being sick all the time, and trying to adjust to workplaces I hate that make me barely any money at all and make me feel awful from the stress, that’s no way to live. Sometimes I have hope, despite the mess I’ve been living in, but I’m at the point where it feels like nothing matters anymore and maybe my son really would be better off without me in his life. It’s one thing for the universe to screw me over a thousand different ways, it’s another for me to screw myself over.

2024.05.28 01:23 thebass25 Stuff I figured out about Temples

I believe most of this is going to be common knowledge however some of this I’d not seen written down anywhere, so lots of spoilers but here it goes…
There are 24 Temples in total all with a corresponding artifact and each gives you a specific Power. Redoing a temple after you gained a power adds levels to the power up to level 10
Temple - Power Alpha - Personal Atmosphere Beta - Gravity Wave Buried/Mu - Phased Time Chi - Sense Star Stuff Delta - Gravity Well Epsilon - Earthbound Eta - Anti-Gravity Field Gamma - Create Vacuum Iota - Precognition Kappa - Sunless Space Lambda - Eternal Harvest Nu - Creator's Peace Omega - Particle Beam Omicron - Void Form Phi - Alien Reanimation Pi - Life Force Psi - Elemental Pull Rho - Moon Farm Sigma - Parallel Self Tau - Reactive Shield Theta - Solar Flare Upsilon - Inner Demon Xi - Supernova Zeta - Grav Dash
In the initial go-around you have to find a set number of artifacts but I don’t know the specific number so the following is after you start doing the NG+ rounds…
You can only find temples where you possess the corresponding artifact most of which you gain from missions, and from Constellation. Which artifacts you get is random (as far as I can tell). In the normal universes where you are greeted by Sarah at the Lodge, shell direct you to talk to Vladimir at the Eye about locations. He’ll give you 7 artifacts locations and 1 temple location. You’ll get more temple locations (one at a time) once you find the one he gives you but he will only give you temple locations for those artifacts you have missions for and the ones you get from Constellation for a total of 14 artifacts and Temples. If your in a non-standard universe where the is no Vladimir then you get the 7 Constellation artifacts up front but you won’t be able to build the armillery until you finish the Buried temple. When you finish the Buried temple (Temple Mu) your artifact total is 15 and if you’ve done all your temple missions you should have upgraded 15 of your powers. So what about the other 9? At this point I was doing what I believe most folks do and head to Unity to reset to the next NG+, and chocking up the 9 missing Temples as just something random that I’ll get in a future NG+. What I discovered is that after the Buried temple, if you postpone Unity and go back to the Eye you can get the temple locations for those artifacts you picked up from the two Starborn. It’s still just one at a time which means its still very tedious but yes, you can upgrade all 24 of your powers at each NG+.
Breakdown of where you get Artifacts: 7 - Missions you do yourself 7 - Provided by Constellation 1 - Buried Temple 9 - Rewards for beating the Hunter and Emissary 24 - Total

2024.05.27 23:34 tessellahedron how to stop stinky air coming in thru the bathroom exhaust fan

My stupid apartment building was constructed so that the bathroom fans blow into neighboring apartments. The manager is lazy and cheap and refuses to do anything, but when the neighbor's fan is on my bathroom stinks and I'm sick of it.
If I buy this "backdraft damper" https://www.˜˜!˜˜.com/1pc-bathroom-ventilation-valve-universal-exhaust-fan-check-valve-for-110-pipes-plastic-anti-backflow-valve-for-toilet-exhaust-with-inclined-gravity-design-and-spring-buckle-closure-g-601099557109767.html
(reddit sucks ass and won't let me post the link so reverse the letters "umet" and replace ˜˜!˜˜ in the link above to see the product I'm looking at)
and duct tape it on the side of a cardboard box with the sides and bottom sealed and then tape the box onto the ceiling so it covers the bathroom fan, would that be effective in stopping air from other people's bathrooms from entering my apartment thru the fan?
Do those dampers work in any orientation or do they need to be horizontal? I could tape it over the fan without a box if it works vertically.
Any better suggestions?
thanks

2024.05.27 23:04 Baskier_31 Biopuk hard magic system part 3 English translated version

Biopuk hard magic system part 3 English translated version
Important: To understand everything I explain below, I recommend that you first read part 1 and part 2 of these publications, in order to understand the scientific bases of this system of magic and at what point it goes from science to magic.
Expansion of the limits section (see part 2:)
The cell cycle also participates in a strict limit regarding how a cell is altered, you see, the life of a cell consists of four phases, each fulfilling a crucial role in this system of magic. This is the first G1 phase, where the cell increases its size as it synthesizes a high amount of proteins, increases the number of mitochondria and other organelles, and prepares to duplicate its DNA. In the next phase, S, the cell synthesizes nuclear proteins, the centrosomes duplicate, and the number of chromosomes doubles. Second to last is the G2 phase, where protein synthesis increases and the size of the cell grows more. Finally, the cell goes to Phase M, cell division, where the nuclei divide and are moved to opposite ends of the cell, finally, the cytoplasm separates to give rise to two equal cells, each with half of size and organs than the original cell. After this, the cell will begin the cycle again, both cells will increase in size, etc.
cell cycle scheme
The important thing at this point, now that we understand how the cell cycle works, is how a cell is altered by this system of magic. When a user of this magic system alters their genetic code and forces the cell cycle to occur at an accelerated rate, first the cell will grow, but instead of following the standard instructions of the DNA, what it will do is follow the new instructions, this implies that when it grows in size instead of adding the standard components to the cytoplasm and cell wall, it will introduce new components, in the same way for new organelles, etc. After cell division, the process begins again, and so on continuously until each part of the cell is replaced by the new components indicated in its DNA, until reaching the point of complete cellular transformation.
This process is, in retrospect, inefficient, and would only occur in a society with primitive knowledge about biology that makes use of this magic. But the process can be done more efficiently, in the first instance by learning to dedifferentiate somatic cells, that is, convert an already differentiated cell into a stem cell, this by introducing transition genes (proteins) that induce this process. in the cells. Once genes that carry out this process are introduced, the cells could differentiate again, carrying out a much more efficient transformation in terms of resources spent and time, since it is not necessary to force many cell cycles for the change to be made.
The last real limit that Reconstruction has is when altering organisms other than oneself, that is, while a user of this magic can easily alter their genetic code, things change when another organism is altered. First of all, when a Reconstruction user wants to alter another, both wills confront each other, fighting to alter or maintain the genetic code, these fights usually end in a stalemate where neither of them is able to overcome the other and has to a third party intervenes on behalf of one of the parties to break the balance. And, secondly, when a Reconstruction user wants to alter the genetic code of another organism, it is not enough to touch it, the other must be pierced, which is why many Reconstruction users maintain some form of claw or needle in their forms, This also applies to root bracelets where the genome of its different genotypic forms is stored. An incision must be made in the skin so that its interior is in contact with its interior, and thus be able to access the genetic code stored there.

Timeline

In the first instance, assuming that this system of magic has been used for a few thousand years in a primitive society, the first stable modifications of the genome would be based on the accelerated synthesis of proteins, such as collagen, hemoglobin, transferin, lactase, etc And manipulate the genetic code so that the body synthesizes proteins that it does not generate on its own, such as: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, valine, etc. Or synthesize more complex things, for example, billions of years ago the human being lost the gene that synthesizes vitamin C, with this magic system it could be recovered.
Primitive age:
A practical example of all this would be the development of a phenotypic form that is not practical for everyday life, but that is very useful for specific situations, such as fighting, increasing growth hormones, suppressing myostatin synthesis (allowing muscle development without limits), and more things. All this to achieve a phenotypic form with incredible strength, but if maintained over time it is harmful to health, so it would only be used in specific cases.
Bull unable to synthesize myostatin
Meanwhile, genes would be discovered to improve the normal and basic genetic code, a stable one to permanently modify the base state of the users of this magic, such as recovering the gene that allows the synthesis of the aforementioned vitamin C, or even more .
At this point, things like organic infrastructure would not be very complex, in fact, they would not yet be developed enough to be common, and would still use cabins or huts made of wood, mud, or other simple materials. Things like light sources, or simple housing reinforcements, would be achieved by altering already existing organisms rather than developing them from scratch, for example by altering bioluminescent organisms like fireflies.
In matters of war, there was little or no change, with respect to our real history, obviously, fights and wars would still be carried out by armed men, albeit larger and stronger, but still needing the use of armor and sharp weapons such as swords.
Bronze age equivalent
The next stage (more or less an equivalent to ancient Rome) of the development of the use of Reconstruction would occur in an indeterminate period of time, later than that seen above, but not very far in time. More fanciful things like altering the natural growth of the body, making yourself grow eight feet tall, altering the color of your skin, eyes, hair, etc. or grow bone armor around the body. But the key is that they manipulate already existing cellular structures, bone cells, muscle cells, tendon, etc. They do not create new structures or specialized cells beyond those that already exist in the body.
https://preview.redd.it/snke9vfk713d1.png?width=564&format=png&auto=webp&s=a4b3d8a8b9098d29251917f7086bd4141d789472
At this point, the organic infrastructure already reaches a complexity and diffusion high enough to replace normal housing, it would have several advantages over normal housing, such as the repair (regeneration) of these would be at its own expense and would not be a waste of resources or time to do it, things like aqueducts would be simpler to build, because instead of using the natural movement of water, a conduit-shaped structure could be used based on muscular movement to push the water even uphill.
Conflicts would evolve little, since weapons and armor would no longer be required, these would already be implemented in the body itself, and would allow a change in war strategies, forms of hand-to-hand combat, etc. The most important change would come with the use of altered war beasts, such as bulls, elephants, or others, reinforced with bone armor and/or other structures such as horns, tusks or claws.
Equivalent to Middle Ages/Enlightenment The next step, which is an intermediate one between the previous one and the absolute dominance over genes and life, would be the conversion of one cell to another, you see, all the cells inside have the same genetic information as the entire body, but They express different parts of them in relation to how they differentiate. A neuronal cell expresses a very specific part of the DNA that is different from that of a bone cell. And for this process there are two methods, one primitive and another more complex, which are detailed in the last section of Rules and Limits, in particular the one that talks about the cell cycle. This allows the total change of the human form, that is, it allows it to no longer follow the normal structure of the body, while in the previous phase the growth of the body was promoted to improve it, in this its normal structure can be altered from scratch, for example. For example, converting bone cells into muscle cells, thus transforming legs into tentacles, skin into chitin, etc. something that would not be possible just by promoting the growth of the structures already present in the body. In this area, the use of extra limbs, such as the aforementioned tentacles instead of legs, or the growth of an extra pair of arms, would begin to become common.
https://preview.redd.it/mt0mnzd4813d1.jpg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b5ba5d5ad5b6ef14fe582fe9954a112e71d1e5c4
In the infrastructure area things would stagnate a bit, with the exception of some minor improvements, such as adaptations to natural disasters. The real advance would come in the military field, because at this point real changes would be made, to begin with the use of a form of firearm, which would consist of the use of bone projectiles and the use of peristaltic muscle movements, Along with pressure buildup in the form of some hydraulic structure to propel them, replenishing these projectiles would only require the use of Reconstruction to make them grow again.
The use of mutated organisms for evolutionary warfare to have more complex weapons, since now they could alter their complete structure to create organisms that are not functional in nature, but for periods of war they would be useful, and after finishing their use they would be discarded. Their severe mutations would not make them suitable to live in nature, nor to reproduce, in fact, their release and in rare cases possible reproduction could turn them into an invasive species, and end up negatively affecting the ecological niche of an area.
The arch structure that grows on its back is clearly not natural or suitable for the environment, it is impossible that it evolved naturally to this state.
Equivalent to Industrial Revolution The next stage would be one intermediate between the previous and the next, not very separated in terms of time from the first, it would be equivalent to the industrial revolution, advances in the understanding of chemistry and biology would allow the development of new organs and body structures. , and specialized organizations for specific tasks. For example, the ability to filter oxygen from water, or the alteration of the photoreceptors in the eyes to capture light waves of the ultraviolet or infrared spectrum. An improvement in things like structural structures and mechanisms, such as increasing the dryness of the skin to not conduct electricity, increasing bone thickness and its internal structures to improve its resistance, etc.
https://preview.redd.it/68lbiqvz813d1.png?width=564&format=png&auto=webp&s=490124472f79aaa34b59019329b456a944255af9
In terms of infrastructure and technology, “chemical ovens” would begin to be created for the synthesis of complex materials, thanks to the use of massive organisms that would make use of different forms of proteins to manipulate the particles of substances, and natural chemical reactions, the The simplest example of this would be the synthesis of steel from iron and carbon, in itself requiring much less energy effort, in the sense that high temperatures are not required, but rather the integration of certain particles into an already existing structure, for example. For example, using polymerized molecules, capable of going from a soluble state to a solid state, that integrates metals in its composition, or some other method.
War technology would undergo a transformation thanks to the use of chemicals, advanced compounds, and new organs in its structures, such as echolocation gases for submarines, or other means of transportation, highly flammable gases for jet propulsion, among others. What is truly important would be the development of graft technology, in our reality a graft is a surgical procedure to transfer tissue from one part of the body to another, in the field of botany it is a method of artificial vegetative propagation of plants. plants, in which a portion of tissue from one plant is attached to another already established. Graft technology, in the scope of this fantasy and science fiction scenario, is a combination of the previous two, it would be the development of small life forms that can be attached and removed from the user easily, and that fulfill a specific function , usually as a weapon, while it would be a waste of resources and time to constantly change from one form to another, if you already have a different organism prepared to fulfill a particular function, the waste disappears. These grafts could be used by both humans and biological machinery, and in the field of war they manifest themselves as weapons. Imagine a base organism that functions as a support for different grafts, from mortar cannons to flamethrowers, instead of modifying its entire genome to change weapons, you only remove the graft and place another one.

Equivalent Second industrial revolution (electricity) The last would be the control over the smallest structures of the organism, the organelles, not only forcing their replication, but creating new types of these that do not exist in nature, and with it new types of cells with unique functions, these would not be present either. In nature. Such as organelles specialized in accumulating resources to carry out these transformations, also cells specialized in accumulating ferrous iron (non-ionic like that which circulates in the blood), in order to create organic iron structures. O Cells specialized in conducting action potentials in the form of electrical charge, similar to neurons, that is, cables.
https://preview.redd.it/aw6wvcxm913d1.png?width=564&format=png&auto=webp&s=cb83852c3730b1a30793531350821c3c50e766de
In terms of infrastructure, this era would be characterized by the beginnings of information technology and computing, as the first computers would be created, thanks to discovering the ability of fungi to transmit information through electrical impulses, through these they would be achieved. create the first computers, these are required by any advanced civilization in its daily field, for example for the architecture of complex buildings, such as skyscrapers, or extensive mathematical calculations that a brain cannot perform, and many more areas of life , how to install Doom on mushrooms.
In war matters, the implementation of computing would have an almost identical effect as, in our reality; from intelligence, data analysis, satellite images, to communications such as data encryption and encryption, such as communication networks. But the most important thing would be the weapons and defense systems, such as guidance and control systems (that is, missiles), and anti-missile defense.
Equivalent to a Space Age Every civilization will eventually reach, at least in science fiction, a space age, where with their technological advances they will be able to travel the stars, colonize worlds, and discover new species. A society that, for millennia, has possessed the magic of Reconstruction would have a slight advantage in the field of space exploration, in the sense that it would not be a problem to find forms that adapt to the vacuum of space, necessary qualities such as being facultatively anaerobic. , having bodies sealed against the vacuum to prevent their blood from boiling, or, in extreme cases of generation ship travel, preventing their offspring from suffering the effects of zero gravity on their bodies. But they would not only be adaptable to the vacuum of space, while normal humans need to search for and inhabit planets that have conditions similar to those of Earth, such as an atmosphere with oxygen, similar gravity, digestible flora and fauna, the users of Reconstruction They have the advantage of being able to adapt to any environment, just by changing their shapes.

The field of war is not well known as evolutionary, given that we risk leaving behind minimal scientific rigor and moving directly to incoherence, but we can always rely on the most classic science fiction and stretch the suspension of disbelief pact a little. We could imagine organic orbital stations, either as a supply line or as a defense mechanism for a planet, available with different means to achieve this objective. On the other hand, we could have the equivalent of mecha or power armor.

ZNS 2228

Fatigue clung to Ditvish like a suffocating shroud, his crimson eyes heavy with exhaustion. The crew’s voices murmured in the background like distant echoes. He had been awake for forty-five hours straight. Even with a steady schedule of stimulant drinks and injections, he could feel the fight being sapped out of his body every passing minute. His fingers, once nimble on the controls, now moved with a leaden slowness, the tactile sensations dulled by the ceaseless grind of exhaustion. But he couldn’t succumb; the weight of responsibility chained him to the command chair.
A beep on his console snapped him out of his hazy trance. He blinked, the world momentarily sharpening around him.
“Ten Whiskers, we are getting… a local transmission,” Skvanu reported, seeming hesitant.
“Which squadron?”
“None of them, Ten Whiskers,” he replied, taking a deep breath. “There’s a Lesser Predator communication drone two thousand kilometers to our bow. It… appears to be hailing us.”
Fully awake now, Ditvish stood up from his chair. “Two thousand kilometers to our bow? Have the whole fleet scan the volume!”
The sensors of the entire fleet focused on the area around the detected drone. The sensors strained, their electronic eyes unblinking, in search of their elusive adversaries. Sensing their continued failure, Ditvish sighed and looked at Skvanu.
“What is the communication drone saying?” he asked. “Play it on the main screen.”
Skvanu fiddled with his controls for a brief moment, and the screen filled with the presence of one of the Lesser Predators.
The bridge crew silenced at the displayed recording. It was not the first time they had seen a specimen of the enemy, but they were more accustomed to seeing these images in training films, interrogations, and prison camps. It— She… began to spoke in well-translated Znosian.
“I am High Fleet Commander Grionc of the Malgeir Sixth Fleet. Ten Whiskers Ditvish, you have fought with determination and cunning, but your ships have been defeated. You have lost Datsot and Gruccud. Your twenty-six squadrons have been trapped and we can slaughter you like meal animals at any moment of our choosing. There is no escape. Surrender with honor, and you and your crew will be treated with the kindness you do not deserve. You have a few moments to decide. If not, well, this wasn’t my idea in the first place, and I only promised to try.”
The message cut off.
Ditvish hissed with anger, staring at Skvanu. “Send this straight back to the animals: our lives were all forfeited to the Prophecy the day we left the hatchling pool. Your threats of death have no effect on me or my crew. We will make sure enough of you Lesser Predators join us in the afterlife for it to be worth it. The Prophecy will be fulfilled through us.”
“Yes, Ten Whiskers.”
The response came back almost instantly. This time, Ditvish could tell the predator on the screen was no mere recording. This was a live transmission relayed through the communication drone.
“Curious, for an excommunicated Znosian to invoke the Prophecy. Or did you not hear, Ten Whiskers? You are no longer considered part of Prophecy. State Security has condemned your entire crew and thrown you out of the Prophecy. Even your high command has abandoned you. If you miraculously escape, all that awaits you back in Znos is torture and death. And if you die here, there is no afterlife. Not for you, if you believe in the Prophecy anyway. What awaits you in mortality is no different from the void that awaits the rest of us.”
“Predator lies!” Ditvish hissed at the screen.
She replied, smug creeping into her voice, “I knew you’d say that. Which is why I came with the receipts. Roll the tape and see for yourself.”
The screen was replaced by a video that began to show a remote hearing on Znos. The cursed State Security Agent, Svatken, began her accusations — weaving a preposterous tale of scandal and betrayal — presenting from her screen obviously fabricated evidence of his fleet stealing supply ships from the Navy, killing his own subordinates who were loyal to the Prophecy, and preparing a full-species schism to the gasps of the shocked judges.
By the second minute, Ditvish knew in his heart that the recording was real. No fabrication of the enemy could understand this much of Znosian culture, express this much nuance, and elaborate with this much historical context.
Svatken then walked the judges through the dozen or so rolls of drone footage, the testimony of his poor five whiskers officer (obtained through torture, undoubtedly), the intercepted recording of a message from one of the ship masters of Atluftrosh’s raiding fluffle who he thought dead, ending with the final and most damning discovery: the fleet of supply drones hidden just one sector away from Datsot.
None of which he’d seen before. Obviously, they must all have been fabricated by Svatken. He knew he should have done something about her earlier…
The commission judges ate it up, displaying shock and outrage at every revelation.
Now that Ditvish thought about it, the hearing results were most likely pre-determined.
“And even if this is not apostasy of the first order, a crime not seen in Navy leadership in centuries,” Svatken concluded to the hearing audience, “The alternate explanation is incompetence from a ten whiskers that is so outrageous it may as well be apostasy. Not only that, the Ten Whiskers has refused to take responsibility for these failures, as is his duty not only as an officer of the Navy, but as a civilized member of the Znosian species. In light of these shocking evidence, State Security demands that he be stripped of his rank, arrested, questioned extensively to root out co-conspirators, and then permanently removed from the Prophecy.”
The judges discussed it among themselves, and the video sped up that part. The pronouncement came seconds later on the video, as grave as they were certain: that Ten Whiskers Ditvish was to be—
“Shut it off, now!” Ditvish ordered, knowing that regardless of the transparency of the lies spoken in the video, his officers would force themselves to obey them as if they were real.
“Yes, Ten Whiskers,” Skvanu obeyed without hesitation, knowing what was coming next too.
To the credit of their discipline, none of the bridge crew members said a word nor acknowledged what they clearly heard. More likely, Ditvish thought, the dullards didn’t make the connections.
“Believe me now?” Grionc asked, and he could hear her satisfaction even through the translation. “That mess is what awaits you all back on Znos.”
“Lesser Predators trickery,” he snarled. “Like all predators, your species specializes in manipulation and exploitation of innocent species like ours. Congratulations. You have just proven what we already knew: that you would stoop so low as to fabricate… such a… dishonest fiction. Now, join us in battle, and you will see what glories await my crew and spacers in Znos when they find that we have destroyed the supposedly legendary Lesser Predator Sixth Fleet. Your people will despair. Your worlds will fall. They will be cleansed of all traces of your barbarism. And then and only then, the Prophecy will be fulfilled through—”
“Sure, sure,” Grionc snorted, rolling her eyes. “I’ve tried my best this way. Now we’re going to try the more fun way. Every hour, we will call you again to see if you have changed your mind. I will try my best to pretend not to enjoy this in front of the… civilized folks also watching this, Grass Eater, but it will be oh, so very, very hard. See your ten ugly whiskers in an hour.”
Then the transmission cut out.
“All ships to battle stations now with primary duty crews,” Ditvish ordered. “I don’t care if you have to fry your circuits to boost your radars. I want the enemy found!”
They waited another thirty minutes before the attack. Just when the Znosians were beginning to think the Lesser Predators had been bluffing, it happened without warning.
The missiles glided noiselessly out of the Terran ships in the dark of space. Three Falconet long-range missiles from each of the eight state-of-the-art combat vessels, the best that Sol could imagine in its forges of war: next-generation Python-class missile destroyers.
Their purpose was not reconnaissance; it was not subterfuge. They were not built with large volumes dedicated to cargo, communications, nor devices of trickery. Their purpose was combat, space combat, and like their builders, they were masters of their craft.
But the Python’s engines’ impressive performance specifications were not required. Not today.
Today, they were not asked for complex maneuvers or innovative tactics; they were merely the deliverers. The messengers of death.
The released Falconet anti-ship missiles coasted silently towards the enemy fleet, waiting, programmed to go loud when they got detected. But they were not. The Znosians could not even detect the much larger ships that launched them, and these missiles’ frontal arcs were coated with the same radar and thermal absorbent paint their motherships were. Their quiet onboard sensors did not even register on the enemy’s threat reaction instruments.
Not until they were a mere five hundred kilometers away: a few of them were finally spotted by the enemy’s thermal sensors staring straight at their semi-occluded drive plumes.
But that was too late. Way too late.
Most of their targets did not even have time to activate their point defense systems. A couple did manage to start tracking them with their relatively primitive fire control radars, causing the missiles to instinctively release their state-of-the-art penetration aids: decoys, electronic dazzlers, and all. The Znosian point defense systems were barely patched to understand that this was something that missiles could even do from their previous encounters with the obsolete Pigeon missiles, and the super-Terran intelligence chips on the Falconet sighed metaphorically in disappointment that the point defense computers on the target ships could not even possibly understand just how outclassed they were.
They took their time to adjust their flight paths in terminal maneuvers. The hopelessly confused defenses of the enemy obviously did not pose enough of a threat for that to be problematic. Most of them went for the location of the enemy reactor core.
A couple of the more creative missiles decided that a hit to the enemy’s ammunition magazines could prove to be a more interesting experiment for the Terrans who launched them.
And a particularly inspired Falconet decided that the enemy bridge, full of enemies after all, could be a more valuable target. It was, of course, wrong; its plasma jet vaporized the enemy ship’s bridge and its entire frontal section but did not instantly destroy the ship. Ah, better luck next time, it thought before it made its disappointed damage report and incinerated its own intelligence chip as the self-destruct sequence kicked in.
For the remaining, the plasma jets from the modern anti-ship missiles lanced into the critical areas of the enemy ships, and two full squadrons (minus half of a lucky ship missing “only” its bridge and its frontal hemisphere) of Znosian Navy ships disappeared into expanding clouds of debris and radiation.
“It’s Squadrons 6 and 20, Ten Whiskers,” Skvanu reported in astonishment. “They’re gone.”
Ditvish said nothing, merely sinking into his command chair in despair.
“It’s a new kind of enemy munition,” Skvanu continued. “We did not even see most of it coming with our sensors aimed at them. A few ships in Squadron 5 claimed to have spotted a sensor ghost on their thermal sensors before impact, but no one successfully engaged any. Squadron 5 Leader is taking full responsibility for this failure.”
There were no sounds on the shocked bridge except that of the engine hum for a minute.
Skvanu broke the silence. “Ten Whiskers, what should we do?”
“Call the Lesser Predators again.”

This is an excerpt from an ongoing, episodic, PbP campaign. Follow the hyperlinks (which lead to other reddit posts) to follow the story.
Fleeing across the Martian ENDLESS HIGHWAY from the radioactive storm, the Starsiders - a group of anti-weapon, rocket-propelled skaters - reach the subterranean underpass. At the tunnel's mouth, they're ambushed by a mad gremlin firing its uzi with wild abandon.
The Starsiders' leader, Eddy Diaz, pulls ahead and rides the cave wall as the gremlin picks off a QP (a rocket propulsion device), using its gravity gun, and promptly flings itself after Eddy, smashing into the ceiling. The impact shakes the underpass, triggering a cave-in.
Eddy barely escapes, losing his teammates, and swerving into the abandoned shootout, parked on the road. There he rescues the shootout's sole survivor, with the storm closing in behind, only for her to hold him at gunpoint.
Meanwhile, a spider-walker, operated by a family of cannibals known as the Meeting, scrambles into the tunnel as the entrance collapses. The father suffers superficial damage, but his three children (Yase, Tariq, and Isma) are unharmed. They crawl onward to the den of the rollin rodents with mal intent. After a quippy exchange, they attack the rodents and collect their corpses for food.

2024.05.27 21:14 bjelkeman The Daedalus Encounter - Chapter 11 - Jenny - New mission

Index First Previous [Next]

Chapter 11: Jenny Hoskins

Jenny strolled through the park at the centre of Aurora City. Overhead she had the ten meter thick water shield which separated the park from the thin Martian atmosphere. The transparent dome had been extraordinarily expensive to construct over the park, but the consensus that ruled Aurora City before the dome was built had decided it was worth the expense. It was the only truly large space in the whole city. Many called it the place of sanity. The dome that housed the park was 250 meters in diameter and 30 meters tall in the middle. It held both a wild section, which was more like a bit of wood, and a more cultivated section. The latter was more like a formal garden, where most things that grew were actually edible plants, nut and fruit trees and shrubs.
A lot of perennials growing in the park were in bloom and she could smell many different sweet flower smells as she strolled past them. Many plants had trouble adopting to the longer seasons on Mars and some artificial lighting was used in the park to get a nice aesthetic balance between flowering and non-flowering plants. There was some arguments about this, but there was of course no natural cycle that fit the Mars year, being twice as long as a year on Earth. Pollinators, like bumble bees, industriously moved around the flowering plants. Under one of the shrubs she saw one of the few brown-grey rabbits that lived in the park. The rabbits were all neutered and were propagated at the veterinary lab. It wouldn’t do to have a rabbit population running wild – that could have ruined the fine balance that was maintained in the garden.
As she rounded a tall hedge a small child, maybe 2-3 years old, dressed in colourful clothes, came running towards her and squealed “Friend. Friend.”
Jenny crouched and held out her hands. The child, a girl, stopped and looked a bit hesitantly at her. Then the girl turned around and looked at what was presumably her mother, who was walking towards her. The girl pointed at Jenny and looked at her mother and repeated. “Friend. Play!”
“No, sweetheart, no, that is not a friend.”
The girl looked at Jenny and then back at her mother, with a puzzled frown on her face. The mother reached down and picked the girl up. “Here. Let’s go see some real friends.”
She turned around with the girl lodged on her hip and walked away without looking back at Jenny.
Jenny stood up and looked after them as they walked off. She sighed, shook her head slightly and continued strolling through the park.
Towards her right she could make out the entrance to the old council building, the Nexus. This was were the city consensus used to meet for day long decision making processes, before the economic collapse. Thirty years earlier, the economic model on which Aurora City was based had collapsed. After several desperate and failed attempts to save the city from bankruptcy, the bondholders and banks had moved in and demanded payments on the massive loans. Most of them were Americas-based, with a smattering of EU, Indian Hegemony and Oceanian investors. The Americas-based investors and banks were only partially backed by the Americas Central Bank and a full bank run was in the making, with a potential large scale economic collapse in the Western hemisphere on Earth as a result. Obviously that couldn’t be allowed to happen. In a lightning strike, Americas Space Corps troops had moved in and taken over control of Aurora City, with a minimum of violence. A few hard core Consensualists got hurt at a brawl with the troops at the Nexus in the last hour of the takeover. But the takeover was quickly completed.
The Americas government had promised to repay the non-Americas investors ten cents on the dollar when the situation was stabilised, and when the now nationalised city state was put up for sale on the open market. This was over ten years ago and nothing new had happened on this front. This had been the last drop for the EU – they had had very frayed relations with the Americas for over half a century. The situation today was that Aurora City was run by a governor with unlimited power. The governor was appointed by the Americas senate and operated much like Mac Arthur had run Japan after their surrender, at the end of the 50 year Global War in the 20th century.
An ongoing and unresolved debate still raged across the city and the rest of the solar system among economists, activists, researchers, social influencers, politicians and people in general, about where the blame lay for the collapse of the Aurora City business model and the subsequent takeoveoccupation. About a third argued it was a plot by Americas and another third argued it was a failed experiment in consensus governing of a nascent city state. The final third was an unholy mess of conspiracy theories, crackpots and some quite sound alternative theories.
The original citizens of Aurora City had not taken kindly to the takeover. They consisted of relatively rich immigrants or children and grand children of immigrants from all over Earth. They had paid significant amounts of money to emigrate to Aurora City and through blood, sweat and tears build up the city over nearly a century. Even if there had only been very sporadic violent resistance, the people of the city considered themselves under occupation. They balanced the complex task of resisting the occupying power, whilst not destroying the viability of the closed loop environmental system ton which they all depended. A very active underground trade in goods, services and resources existed in parallel with the crippled public economy, which was a huge drain on the governor’s resources, without seemingly damaging the city population much.
The governor had a very difficult task of keeping the city operating at a level that convinced the investors that they would get some money back, at some point. This had to be done without upsetting the applecart completely with an open rebellion from the city population. A rebellion which could trigger the economic collapse the takeoveoccupation had been put in place to avoid in the first place.
These days, the city population showed their open rebellion publicly, mostly through cultural differences. Really long unkempt hair, a long beard, hippy-like fashion, which was supported by the underground economy, with mended and recycled clothes and other resources. This was in stark contrast to the occupying forces, military police and governor’s office, where close cropped hair and business dress was the requirement. There was never a mistake as to in which camp one belonged. Most restaurants, pubs, clubs and shops catered to one or the other, even if essentially all those that ran the places were original Nexus City citizens. Only about two, three percent of the population were migrants from Americas, and most of them didn’t feel very welcome at all.
Jenny, being an Americas Space Corps Commander, with short cropped hair, no makeup, with plain, new clothes was clearly in the camp of the occupier. She didn’t feel particularly comfortable in her role here, but she went where the Space Corps sent her. Now she was at a loose end as she had just been moved from her previous role as Chief of Staff at the Space Corps HQ on Mars. She had been assigned as liaison to an EU ship on a mission to Jupiter, but the mission was classified and she had not yet been given the security clearance that allowed her access to the mission information. As usual, the Space Corps bureaucracy was demonstrating that the bureaucracy ruled, unless missiles were flying. The only thing she knew was that it was an unusual mission. Americas and EU didn’t have much in common these days and they were at a bit of a standoff over Mars, so a liaison mission on an EU ship was unusual, to say the least. She did know that the ship was the EUSC Corvette Mannerheim, and that it was leaving tomorrow.
Jenny had been just over two years in her role at Nexus City and was taking a walk around the city, to say goodbye to the few friends she had made and the places she had liked. She didn’t expect to ever come back here again.
The next place to visit for Jenny was the aquarium. The person in charge of the Nexus City radiation shielding, Mr. Biswas, was also the senior aquarist of the city. Large parts of the city was covered by transparent domes with XX meters of water in it. This provided several benefits. A quite adequate radiation shield, which was needed as Mars’ atmosphere wasn’t thick enough to protect it from cosmic rays. The water also let through some sunlight, which made the city much more pleasant to live in – the alternative was to live in tunnels with no sunlight. Finally, the water actually had a limited but actual ecosystem in it, with fish, other aquatic animals and underwater plants. The fish, animals and plants were decoration and a way to keep the water body clean and interesting. It wasn’t suitable for growing fish for food, which was done in the huge aquaponic farms outside of the city proper.
As a hobby aquarist, Jenny had found a real friend in Mr. Biswas. Having a career in the Space Corps hadn’t exactly made it easy to have an aquarium. She probably hadn’t had one for the last ten years, when she thought about it. So when she ended up in Aurora City, with the huge city spanning aquariums, she had spent a lot of her free time working as a volunteer at the aquarium. Mr. Biswas was one of the few native citizens who didn’t care anything about the politics of the situation and had treated Jenny first as any other volunteer and then finally as a friend.
She found Mr. Biswas in the hatchery, where he was leaning over a water-filled trough with a few thousand fish eggs. The hatchery smelled faintly of lake water and there was a constant underlying noise of running water and murmuring pumps.
“Mr. Biswas,” Jenny said.
He turned around and pushed up his glasses on the top of his bald head. Once he saw her a huge smile appeared on his face.
“Ms Hoskins! Lovely to see you! To what do I owe this pleasure?”
“Well, I really just wanted to see you, and some of your darling fish. And, well, I am shipping out. So I won’t be back for a while.”
Mr. Biswas frowned and looked at her.
“Well that is not good news. I had been looking forward to our conversations, and your excellent help, for quite some time more.”
She nodded. She didn’t quite know what to say.
“I presume you can’t tell me much about where you are going?”
A slight shake of her head.
“Well, a great shame. But don’t be glum Ms. Hoskins. Let’s go and have a look at our catfish smolt, they are doing quite well. Much thanks to you I must say.”
He peeled off the thin protective rubber gloves he had on and put them in the recycling bin. Then he took her lightly by the arm and led her through the different sections of the aquarium hatchery and past the smolt tanks. Jenny had looked after these catfish since they arrived as eggs, when you could just about see the eyes forming in the egg. They had grown through the stages of larvae and then juvenile fish. She had worked with the other volunteers to inspect them regularly, remove dead eggs and larvae and finally transferred them to the larger fish tank, where they were now. A few more months and they would be ready to be introduced in the large aquariums, where they would help keep the bottom clean of waste and plant debris.
Once they arrived at the fish tanks they talked about the development of the fish and the planned distribution over the different water bodies in the city. Jenny could almost forget that this was probably the last time ever she was here. When it was time to go, she thanked Mr. Biswas for the time together and gave him a brief hug.
“I know we don’t talk of your work here,’ he said. “But, go out there and do good work. I know you can and you will. Safe travels my friend.”
It stung a bit at the corner of her eyes. She nodded and made a little wave with her hand. Then she walked out of the Nexus aquarium hatchery for the last time.
***
The next morning she was early at the spaceport and reported in with the officer in charge. She had received the security clearance late at night and had spent a few hours reading up on the mission. She was going to be the Space Corps liaison officer to an EUDSC mission to Jupiter, where there was a foreign object under investigation by ESA. The EU was in a war-of-words conflict with the Chinese about jurisdiction and had decided to bury the hatchet enough that a Space Corps liaison was deemed to be a benefit. Her mission was simple. Make sure that no mistake is made that puts the Americas Space Corps and the EUSC in conflict with each other. Somewhat surprisingly they were going to meet a fast courier en route from Earth, which would deliver an EUSC team and an Admiral (no less!) onto the corvette she was about to board, that would take all of them the rest of the way to Jupiter. This, together with her role, was an indication that the powers that be considered what was going on a very high priority. There had been an indication in the briefing of a security breach, so she wasn’t going to get more information until she met up with the EU team en route.
The officer in charge of the spaceport personally followed her out to the launch pad. Cleary there were not a lot of other interesting things going on at the moment.
“You are going up to an EU corvette for a mission to Jupiter. Highly unusual,” he said, unashamedly fishing for more information.
“Yes, it is. I was told yesterday that I am going. So I really don’t know much what brought this on.”
“I heard some rumours of a strange object. If the EU wants us to be involved it must be about the Chinese. We saw some unexpected fleet movement on their behalf recently. But I didn’t think it would mean we would involve the EU.”
“Well, maybe it is more that they are involving us?”
“Hmph. Well, maybe so.”
Clearly he wasn’t very impressed by the idea that the Space Corps didn’t hold the initiative in whatever manoeuvrings were going on. Jenny found that most officers of the Space Corpse looked down their noses at the EU space forces. Not without reason. But she thought that it never paid to underestimate your opponents, or reluctant partners for now.
Once he realised he would’t get much more out of her, he wished her good hunting and went back to the office, leaving her in the hands of an underofficer to lead her to the shuttle.
***
The shuttle arrived at the EUDSC Corvette Mannerheim an hour after it had taken off from Nexus City. The trip was uneventful and apart from the crew of the shuttle, she was alone onboard.
She could see the ship through one of the windows in the shuttle as they approached. She knew the profile and specifications of all the EUSC ships, but it was always different to see a ship live and close up. She had served a few years on a larger Space Corps ship, a destroyer, as a communications officer and later in charge of offensive weapons.
The EUSC Mannerheim was a Nordic-type corvette of which six had been built twenty years earlier. She had been assembled at the EU orbital shipyard New Rotterdam, which resided in high Earth orbit. It was a blocky design, all in black, with no planetary landing capabilities. She was 220 meters long and 30 meters wide at the widest. She carried a crew of 28 and often a detachment of 12 marines. She could be equipped with 50 long distance anti-ship missiles and she had 12 point defence cannons.
Jenny waited patiently as they docked with the corvette. As she sat waiting, she considered if she had heard of any recent engagements where a liaison officer was exchanged with the EU. She couldn’t think of any, but then there was a lot going on that wasn’t known to everyone within the service. On the other hand, as a chief of staff at Mars HQ she ought to have known if anything was happening at Mars or further out of the gravity well.
Her thoughts were interrupted when the sergeant in charge of the passenger cabin came and announced that the docking procedure was complete and she could transfer now. She grabbed her meagre baggage and moved over to the docking tube.
“Ma’am, do you need assistance across the tube?”
She smiled at the sergeant. “No sergeant, I am used to docking tubes. Thanks for the offer though.”
He nodded and opened the hatch and swung it sideways on the big hinges. The docking tube was of EU design and had slightly different arrangements of handholds and lights than the Space Corps tubes. She pushed the luggage bag ahead of her and slowly launched herself down the tube. As she arrived, she could see a person at the other end of the airlock door, through the small window. He nodded at her and disappeared from view. Right after, the door cracked open. It then gradually swung open and she was met by a young man in ship uniform. A petty officer if she read the insignia correctly. He nodded and invited her into the airlock with a hand gesture.
“Commander, this way please. May I take your bag?”
“Of course,” she replied and pushed the bag in his direction. She grabbed a handhold and moved into the airlock. Apart from minor differences, it was essentially the same as an airlock in a Space Corps ship. The petty officer closed the airlock behind her and then moved to the ship side of the airlock and opened it. As it opened, she could hear the familiar ship sounds, but the smell of the ship was subtly different. It smelled faintly of something, cinnamon?
Right in front of her was an navy officer which could only be the Officer On Deck. She straightened and saluted.
“Request permission to come aboard, sir.”
The officer saluted right back.
“Commander, welcome onboard the EUDSC Corvette Mannerheim. I am lieutenant Schwartz and it would be my pleasure to guide you to your cabin. Mr. Peters here will bring your bag,” he said indicating the petty officer. He invited her to follow her along into a corridor.
The internal colours of the EU ship were different from a Space Corps ship. The colour palette was mainly different shades of blue with some grey mixed in. Apart from that, it reminded her of other ships she had served on. All warning labels, signs and notices were clear and easy to understand, but had different colours and sometimes different iconography.
Lt Schwartz turned to her. “The captain will receive you at 1800 hours for dinner at the captains’ mess. Ship board time right now is,” he looked at his comm, “1650 hours. That should give you time to familiarise yourself with the emergency procedures. Mr Peters here will show you the cabin and facilities. Your cabin is right here. Number 403. Mr Peters will fetch you at 1755 hours and show you to the captain’s mess.”
With that he nodded to her. “Commander,” and left along a side corridor.
Mr Peters opened the cabin door and let her enter. He took a few minutes to show her the different emergency procedures and equipment, where to find the head and how to operate the communal bathroom. Then he left her, promising to be back in about an hour to pick her up.
She drifted in the middle of the small cabin, familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. It was good to be back on a ship, even if this wasn’t her ship.

2024.05.27 19:16 Kapples14 A New Era: 1972 Democratic Vice Presidential Selection

A New Era: 1972 Democratic Vice Presidential Selection
Background: From within the Huntington Place of Detroit, Michigan, the audience would roar with shock and awe as Massachusetts senator Ted Kennedy would take the nomination among a large swath of candidates. As the younger brother of the late President John F. Kennedy and former senator Robert F. Kennedy, many look the young man in hopes of defeating the popular Vice President Hiram Fong in November.
While Kennedy's campaign was mired by the Chappaquiddick Incident in which he was jailed for several months, the chaotic primary process would lead way for Kennedy to present himself as a reliable and honest voice of the people compared to the feuding and ill-tempered candidates. By the time the National Convention came, candidates like Sargent Shriver, Wilbur Mills, and Terry Sanford had dropped out and backed the affluent liberal.
Kennedy would assemble a team of advisors including Representative Edith Green, former Attorney General Ramsey Clark, Chicago mayor Richard J. Daley, activist Julian Bond, and Milton Gwirtzman in order to begin vetting candidates as it became clear that he would likely win the nomination. Throughout the lengthy discussion, the group would begin debating over what qualities and policies would best reflect upon a potential Kennedy presidency. The discussion would focus primarily on matters of geography, political balance, experience, lack of controversy, and an ability to serve out the role of president if necessary.
Rumor would circulate that Kennedy's initial list would span over sixty candidates, but those numbers would quickly drop from fifty and to twenty as various names were marked off or placed in consideration for Cabinet roles. Among the rumored candidates would be Representatives Shirley Chisholm and Martha Griffiths, Senators George McGovern and Mike Gravel, former Treasury Secretary Sid McMath, Governor John J. Gilligan, and even CBS newsman Walter Cronkite. The vetting process would be long and frustrating due to the already-contentious atmosphere of the 1972 Democratic National Convention, but the team would press on until a small shortlist was made just several days before the convention was to begin.
The finalists, first reported on CBS News on July 1st of 1972, would consist of Idaho senator and presidential candidate Frank Church, Senator Vance Hartke of Indiana, Governor Warren Hearnes of Missouri, and House Representative Mo Udall.

Edward \"Ted\" Moore Kennedy: Senator from Massachusetts (1962-present), Senate Minority Whip (1969-1971).
Nominee: Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts

Candidates:

Frank Forrester Church III: Senator from Idaho (1957-present), presidential candidate in 1972.
Frank Church: After coming in second place to Kennedy during the primaries, Senator Church has quickly changed his tune from harsh criticism of his Boston-born rival into that of a passionate endorsement. With years of experience in the Senate, Church would provide some needed experience to better aid the youthful Kennedy. If nominated, the ticket would present a strong sense of unity between the two liberal rivals.
Church, throughout his time in the Senate, has acted as a strong supporter of civil rights, environmentalism, and the creation of welfare programs for the underprivileged. As one of the most vocal critics of Rockefeller's handling of the Vietnam War, Senator Church would also help to reenergize the Doves in America's progressive voting blocks.

Rupert Vance Hartke: Senator for Indiana (1959-present), Mayor of Evansville, Indiana (1956-1958).
Vance Hartke: The liberal senator has worked up the ladder throughout his tenure in Congress, building strong working-relationships with Senate Leaders Lyndon B. Johnson and Mike Mansfield, which would ultimately grant him the position of Ranking Chair of the Senate Committee on Veteran's Affairs. Throughout his tenure, Hartke has been instrumental in ensuring automobile manufactures are required to install seatbelts and safety equipment in all car models, passing measures to create student loan programs and veteran benefits, and establishing Amtrak.
As an outspoken critic of the Vietnam War, Hartke has been seen lambasting both Presidents Reuther and Rockefeller, giving him the allure of a maverick politician willing to stand up to higher figures. The Indiana senator's nomination would give Kennedy a strong candidate to help campaign with progressives, although his anti-war sentiments may not win over states like Indiana that have been more vocally supportive of the war.

Warren Eastman Hearnes: 46th Governor of Missouri (1965-present), 31st Secretary of State of Missouri (1961-1965), Chair of the National Governors Association (1970-1971).
Warren E. Hearnes: A lesser-known figure within the Democratic Party, but decorated with a political career spanning over twenty years, Governor Hearnes has been seen as a strong man of the people that has been seen fighting the remaining components of the Pendergast Machine to challenging Missouri's political establishment. While Hearnes lacks a national profile akin to other prominent figures, his record as governor leaves him as one of the most accomplished candidates in consideration.
As Missouri's governor, Hearnes has prioritized improving public education, supporting civil rights, environmental protections, and bettering the state's highways and traffic safety. During his tenure, the state has overseen the massive increase of state aid to vocational education to go from over $850,000 to $8.8 million; furthermore, Hearnes has passed Missouri's first civil rights legislation and improved the state's Fair Employment Practices Act.

Mo Udall: Being rather well-liked in the party due to his humor and casual nature, having Udall on the ticket would help to alleviate any stress caused by Kennedy's past controversies, as well as provide a sense of connection with the everyman. Udall first entered the House of Representatives after winning a special election to succeed his brother, Stewart Udall, was appointed as John F. Kennedy's Secretary of the Interior.
Udall's political record is rather mixed, with a strong support for environmental protections, election campaign reform, and the need for official government healthcare. Udall gained national prominence thanks to his work in helping to both legislate and pass the Postal Reorganization Act of 1971, changing the Post Office Department into a semiprivate organization that allowed post office workers to unionize. Despite the latter note, Udall has often drawn ire from union leaders due to his opposition towards right-to-work laws.

2024.05.27 18:38 FOETUShygRAPplER How was Yuta able to use Infinite Void?

Domain Expansions involve the construction of a user's innate domain within or without a barrier using a cursed technique, and the user then infuses this area with their cursed technique. What exactly is this Innate Domain, then?
It is pretty clear throughout the manga that a person's innate domain is most likely a manifestation of their soul, mind, or heart (not in a literal sense). This is evident from the Domain Expansions of various sorcerers, which are expansions of a sorcerer's innate domain infused with their cursed technique. Examples include Idle Death Gamble for Hakari, All-Encompassing Unequivocal Love for Yuta, Infinite Void for Gojo, and Malevolent Shrine for Sukuna. All these Domain Expansions are clearly physical manifestations of the user's person, heart, and soul.
Though not canonically stated, it seems that if two sorcerers had the same cursed techniques, their Domain Expansions would be different. This explains why Sukuna couldn't or didn't use Chimera Shadow Garden even after being in Megumi's body.
Now the question is, how could Yuta in Gojo's body use Infinite Void? Can people who body hop use more than one domain? But wouldn't that contradict the basic definition? Was Kenjaku's All-Encompassing Garbhadhatu his own domain, or did it belong to the body he possessed? Could Sukuna have used Chimera Shadow Garden but chose not to?
It would have made more sense if Yuta had imbued his own domain with the Limitless Technique instead of his Copy Technique, similar to how Kenjaku imbued his domain against Yuki with the Anti-Gravity technique.
If Sukuna can't use the domain that belonged to Megumi, then Yuta and Kenjaku should be the last people able to use the domain belonging to the body they inhabit, considering Megumi's soul/person was still there in some way.
