2024.06.08 22:59 timreg7 Tenure track vs adjunct career paths

I am a career k-12 special educator (10 years, 33yo) who is a recent doctoral grad from a large, well known university. I am about to move back to my smaller, less populated state and am working out what exactly I want to do for work. My current org has offered me a part time, remote role supervising the program I just created and launched last year, so I have 2-3 days per week free to pursue other things.
I've done many different, interesting jobs in k-12 (resource teacher, inclusion specialist, general ed teacher, behavior program teacher, instructional coach, director / creator of district program, and various leadership positions along the way), and I generally think I have a lot to offer in my home state. They are far behind in inclusion, plus my recent orgs have done things like project based learning and mastery based grading that would be very valuable for them.
My instinct is to try working for myself, offering PD directly to schools who want to learn how to implement inclusion, PBL, MBG, etc. This would be especially valuable in rural areas that have no access to it. It seems like I should keep my part time gig and try to make it working for myself this way... However, a new opportunity just presented itself.
I contacted some old teaching partners and professors back home, and I was basically told that I should apply for a tenure track professor job that is about to open up. This is not something I've really considered before, though I think I would do well in such a role. I had only ever really thought about working in an adjunct role while I established myself as a consultant / PD provider.
But a tenure track professor... that sounds like a lot of work for not that much money (I think I'll make more as a district admin?). It also sounds like I'd have to hit the brakes on my personal venture offering PD, as well as my hobbies (BJJ, Bonsai, Backpacking, Reading). I'm really looking for some career advice and feedback from people working in academia, particularly within education. I need to figure out how I should consider the possibility of working as a career university professor, as that will certainly mean saying 'NO' to many things I want to keep in my life. Not to mention... I will be starting a family soon and would love nothing more than to be present for my children.
Any advice or personal anecdotes will be greatly appreciated.

2024.06.08 22:52 Kallion_sn European military industry

Hello everybody. Now with the war in Europe and the European elections in progress, there has been a lot of talk about European defense and the creation of a European industrial complex free, at least in part, from America. And with that, I ask here t people more experienced in the matter here. Is a European military industrial complex even possible?
Don't get me wrong, I'm super pro Europe, but it looks like this is going to be another push for nothing. The only real projects we have had so far have all been related to aviation, largely because of Airbus. Which has already negotiated decades before the distributing of tasks across different countries in Europe. (And even these failed in their objectives. The eurofighter comes to mind and didnt even have French participation. The A400 failed to meet all the required parameters in speed and especialy freight weight, and the Eurocopter went from an Apache replacement to a reconnaissance helicopter. And non of this platforms are realy used by european countrys)
For example, is a France-Germany project really possible? It seems that the new fighter project is going down the drain, the new tank too and there aren't many more projects that can be said to be truly European, and for Europeans. We can't even agree on simple things like a common rifle or a common revolver, anti-aircraft defense, troop transport, etc...
It seems that the small European states simply don't care about European sovereignty in defense and buy the cheapest possible (America), while the big ones like Italy, Spain but especially France and Germany simply cannot agree on how the cost, production and requirements of a given project, and instead of trying, they simply give up and either buy from the Americans, or make their own equipment. Is this going to change in the close future? I wj lç

2024.06.08 22:49 ajrf92 Request]: Feeling curious about how do you see me. I look myself as the typical center-right with some libertarian and skeptic attitudes.

Economy/Fiscal:
-In favor of free market, as this is the only way to improve the standards of living (local and abroad)
-In favor of labor reforms that flexibilize labor market
-in favor of a high marginal income tax rate, especially for millionaires
-Against a wealth tax
-Low corporate tax (No more than a 25-30%)
-Low VAT and special taxes (for example, fuel taxes)
-Against subsidies to industries like energy (fossil or renewable), automotive (especially EV's), culture industry,...
-In favor of promoting small businesses rather than large companies, especially in sectors like road transport or agriculture.
-Strict budget control which should be included in the Constitution
Social:
-In favor of a feminism that doesn't criminalize men and/or asymmetric feminism (in other words, egalitarianism)
-Pro sex work feminism
-Subsidies only to people that can't stand by their own (for example disabled or unemployed people with little/no income)
-Universal healthcare, regardless if it's state-owned or not if it's able to provide a good healthcare for all.
Labor:
-Keep the current 40 hr journey
-Abolition of subsidies to unions and employers organizations
-Minimum wage of 12/15 €/hour
-Abolition of gender quotas and other "inclusive measures" if those don't reflect actual disabilities. Suppresion of mandatory "equality/non-discrimination plans", especially for SME's. Only the listed companies should do it if they consider it. Implementation of a supervisory board based on the Aufsichtrat.
Energy:
-Combination of renewables and nuclear power to provide a clean and safe electricity.
-Abolishment of ESG criteria for energy industries in order to encourage oil and gas production, as long as it's still demanded.
Mobility:
-Abolition of Speed Limits on freeways
-Training reinforcement for drivers to ensure that they're able to drive fast and safely on the road
-Encouragement of rail freight transport and less High Speed trains as they're less profitable
-Research programs in order to develop synthetic fuels for any kind of vehicles (preferably privately funded)
-Same as above but with Electric Vehicles in order to provide a wide and diverse range of vehicles that suit consumer needs regardless of the powertrain
-Abolition of the 2035 Ice sales ban and the Euro 7 standards
-Taxes associated with the weight of the cars in order to encourage lighter cars
-Eclectic urban planning where pedestrians, cyclists and drivers can coexist, in order to minimize the urban commuting time
Education/Science
-Free college tuition for incomes lower than the 50% of the per capita income of the EU
-More focus on STEM and economic areas. Philosophy should kept focused into analytical philosophy, while the rest of the philosophies should be moved to "philosophy History".

2024.06.08 22:49 Pristine-Fusion6591 Sausage Bean Soup

This is a soup that I make a big batch of, and just eat it for lunch and dinner over 4 days. I freeze whatever I won’t be able to get to in 4 days time. Feel free to sub out any of the ingredients to something else if you prefer. For example, if you want it even healthier, use ground turkey instead of ground sausage.

Let’s start with the macros:

Serving Size: 2 cups

Calories: 347
Protein: 17g
Carbohydrates: 43g
Fat: 13g
Saturated Fat: 3g
Cholesterol: 36mg
Fiber: 13g

Ingredients:

• 1lb ground sausage
• 1 TBSP olive oil
• 1 bag of 15 bean mix
• 4-5 sm-med potatoes- Diced
• 4 Large Carrots- peeled and sliced
• 2 bell peppers- chopped
• 1 yellow onion- Diced
• 4-6 cloves of garlic- minced
• 2 cups fresh green beans- Chopped
• 4-5 celery stalks- sliced
• 1 whole cabbage- chopped
• 1 28oz can crushed tomatoes
• 1 vegetable Boullion cube
• 1 14oz can fire roasted tomatoes
• 1.5 TBSP cumin
• 1TBSP paprika
• 1 TBSP smoked paprika
• Red pepper flakes to your liking. I use a bit more than a pinch.
• 7 cups of water.
You are going to need a big pot to make this, it’s a lot! I use a 9 qt Le Creuset Dutch oven.
1.) soak the 15 bean mix for at least 4 hrs, but you can also soak them overnight in the refrigerator.
2.) brown the ground beef in 1 TBSP olive oil. Once browned, you can also drain the fat if you choose to make this recipe lower fat, but I do not take that step with this soup. The Macros reflect not draining.
3.) add in Thé onions, celery, bell peppers, garlic and keep stirring, and as the aromas release, add in the dried spices.
4.) stir in all the remaining fresh vegetables at this point except for the 15 bean mix, and the cabbage.
5.) now add the crushed tomatoes, and diced tomatoes. Stir for about 30 seconds.
6.) now add the 7 cups of water. Turn the heat up until the liquid starts to bubble, then add the bouillon cube.
7.) while that is simmering, rinse the 15 bean mix really well, then add it to the pot. Allow to remain at medium-high temp for about 5 minutes. Stirring the whole time.
8.) add the cabbage, then turn the heat down to low, place the lid on the pot and simmer on low for at least 2 hrs.
9.) Serve and enjoy!
You really can change this recipe around as you see fit. I try to get a nice variety of veggies in, so sometimes I’ll do kale instead of cabbage. You could really add or subtract anything. I use potatoes because I find that my nails and hair are really healthy when in incorporate potatoes in my diet. And unless you have other dietary restrictions that restrict you from potatoes, it’s typically the things we put on potatoes that make them unhealthy…. And the tubers themselves have a lot of nutrients. I use red and gold potatoes because they have thinner skin that I can leave on. Because I hate peeling potatoes.
I hope this helps anyone who struggles with what to eat. And once it’s made, it’s so easy to grab a bowl to reheat. I think a lot of us have made bad choices just because we want something fast. So this is fast. Just be sure to freeze any amount that you won’t be able to get through in 4 days time. And unless you’re cooking for a family of four… you will not be able to Finish this in 4 days.
I have another recipe that I made a while back if you scroll my profile. I think I posted it about 2 weeks ago.

2024.06.08 22:46 minecraftnoob72 [Primer] Dune the TCG - Hazezon, Shaper of Sand.

As I was updating my Moxfield Primer, I felt like sharing my list here as well. I tried to summerise but feel free to check out my primer for a more indepth look at the list.
Link to the deck and its Primer.

Introduction

This deck isn't a traditional landfall deck, even though it includes some typical cards like Lotus Cobra, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, and Dryad of the Ilysian Grove. It is the culmination of much thought and is constantly evolving in response to new releases or adjustments to my play style.
To construct this deck, we had to play around several constraints. Firstly, deserts aren't basic lands, so we can't rely on typical green ramp spells like Kodama’s Reach, Rampant Growth, Cultivate, etc. Secondly, deserts objectively aren't good lands. Many produce colorless mana, and those that produce colored mana enter the battlefield tapped more than half of the time. That being said, the Outlaws of Thunder Junction expansion has brought us numerous cards, primarily deserts but also one or two cards that will strengthen our strategy. For example, the excellent Dune Chanter and the ramp spell Map the Frontier. And even more recelty, we got a new bomb from MH3 with the Desert Warfare.
There are several options for building this deck. I've decided to focus on creating tokens solely related to the multiple desert ETB effects. We'll discuss this further later, but I'm not including any token doublers like Anointed Procession, Parallel Lives, or Doubling Season. For me, they are not needed in this deck and feel like "win more" cards.
I've implemented numerous lords to make our token army more threatening, and I've complemented all of this with a burn sub-theme. These additional points of damage are always welcome and can, in certain circumstances, secure us the victory.
Finally, note that there is no fast mana or combo in this deck.
Given the uniqueness of deserts, this deck will require careful calculation of each of your plays, which provides **great satisfaction** when everything falls into place correctly.
Furthermore, the deck utilizes many cards that are not often seen, at least from my experience, which adds a fresh aspect to the gameplay, even if it remains disguised as tokens/landfall.
The deck can be completely shut down by ETB suppression effects like Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines The mana base can sometimes work against us, and we'll have to make do with what we have, which can be a bit frustrating at times.
The deck revolves exclusively around its commander to create tokens and thus build our army, which can become tricky if it gets too much attention from removal.
If you don't enjoy playing with a board filled with tokens or prefer a deck that can be piloted without the presence of its commander, this deck might not be the right fit for you.
But don't worry, you can find more of my decks with different archetypes on my Moxfield profile!
Overall, this deck is mid-tier. It can be a bit hard to set up at times, especially when you are unlucky with your land drops. You can play it in a pod with upgraded precons such as the Merfolk one. There is a low amount of "feel bad" cards and you may play it agaisnt newer players.
That being said, the deck may struggle at a table full of highly optimized decks that run a lot of interactions. As it is centered around a bit of flavor and some gimic/pet cards, this deck is perfect for casual games with a drink 🍺

Strategy

Our main plan is to deal damage through combat, utilizing evasion such as trample or double strike. We assemble a substantial army thanks to our commander and the multiple cards that allow us to play more than one land per turn. Our primary finisher is swinging with Jetmir, Nexus of Revels out. However, we can certainly kill opponents one by one with an army of boosted by one or two of our lords ; hitting with about ten 5/5s should do the job.
I removed the old tutors (Worldly Tutor, Eladamri's Call and Time of Need) from the deck to add more synergistic cards and to be less reliant on a single card to win. This allows the games to be a bit more unique and to see a greater variety of cards.
Against opponents who also assemble armies of tokens or large boards, we deviate from our strategy a bit to focus on burn damage, using cards like Impact Tremors, Purphoros, God of the Forge, Witty Roastmaster and the new card Warleader's Call. These additional damages also allow us to finish the game more quickly and exert some form of pressure on the table.

Hazezon and its peculiarities.

Let's say the first line of text is there for flavor; Desertwalk is rarely relevant.
Next, Hazezon creates 2 Sand Warrior tokens each time a desert enters the battlefield.
It's important to note that these tokens have all three colors: White, Green, and Red. This is crucial to keep in mind because we will build around that. Additionally, since we already create 2 tokens per desert, I don't see the need to add token doublers.
I've had them in the past in other versions of the deck, but I felt like they slowed down my gameplay rather than speeding it up. And cards like Anointed Procession, Parallel Lives or the recently printed Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation tend to draw focus on us, whereas a card like Hour of Promise will usually pass unnoticed, despite providing a similar effect in our deck.
Finally, we can play our deserts from our graveyard. This ability is very interesting because many deserts require sacrificing to benefit from their effects. This allows us to fully utilize cards like Realms Uncharted or Nahiri's Lithoforming and flood the board in no time.
Note that I don't play any of the cards that allow playing lands from the graveyard. To me, it doesn't make sense and it's a false good idea. The only lands we're interested in for our strategy are deserts, and Hazezon already allows us to play them from our graveyard. Cards like Ramunap Excavator, Ancient Greenwarden, or Crucible of Worlds lead us in the wrong direction and don't offer the redundancy we hope for. Yes, we can replay fetchlands with these cards, but we'll quickly exhaust their usefulness. Remember, the desert type is a distinct nonbasic land type.

Game plan

Ramp as every deck does: play some mana rocks, search for your color fixing, and try to acquire some deserts to sacrifice easily, such as Grasping Dunes or Cradle of the Accursed.
Try to understand the board state and do not hesitate to delay your plan if you are seen as the biggest threat. You should have a good "multi land" card such as Azusa, Lost but Seeking or Exploration.
This deck can burst out in one or two turns with cards like Zuran Orb, Summer Bloom, or Nahiri's Lithoforming.
By turns 8 to 10, you should have established a plan to swing at the biggest threat or the weakest opponent, as you prefer. With one of our pingers, you should then be able to finish off the rest of the table with some desert recursion shenanigans.

Conclusion

Thank you very much for reading this far. Do not hesitate to check my other decks. Feel free to contact me on Discord at bulbax for feedback or questions. I tried to summerise but feel free to check out my primer for a more indepth look at the list.
Stay safe, and keep enjoying this amazing hobby ❤

2024.06.08 22:31 GarnetGrapes These are the bird flu questions that influenza and animal scientists desperately want answered

Helen Branswell, STAT News, paywall-free link: https://archive.ph/dSGsG
"Ten weeks after government scientists discovered that H5N1 bird flu was sickening dairy cattle in the United States, many of the mysteries surrounding what is happening on affected farms remain just that.
Widespread reluctance on the part of farmers to allow scientists — government or otherwise — onto their premises to study spread of the virus among infected cows has created a frustrating lack of understanding of the dynamics of this outbreak. U.S. Department of Agriculture incentives aimed at getting farmers to test their cows and take preventive measures to protect both animals and farmworkers do not seem to have solved the impasse, even as the outbreak has affected 82 herds in nine states.
It’s not lost on many scientists, here and abroad, that the paucity of data coming out of the U.S. is not dissimilar to the limited information flow out of China in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic — a situation the U.S and other governments complained about loudly at the time. With the shoe on the other foot, however, there is no overt effort to make farmers cooperate.
“A lot of criticism was leveled at China for their early response to Covid-19 — some of it reasonable, a lot of it extremely ignorant. Are we currently making some of those mistakes ourselves?” wondered Kristian Andersen, an evolutionary biologist and a professor of immunology and microbiology at Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif.
Investigating outbreaks always takes time. But it is startling this far into this situation that so many questions appear to be no closer to answers.

Related: A third U.S. farmworker infected with bird flu is the first to experience respiratory symptoms

To get a sense of what the key questions are, STAT asked scientists who have long worked on influenza or in veterinary medicine what they viewed as the most pressing questions. Sixteen answered individually; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention answered collectively for three flu experts within its ranks whose opinions we sought.
The answers — their questions — roughly fit into three buckets: What’s happening on the farms among cows? What’s happening on farms among farmworkers? What’s happening to the virus and what does this all portend for H5N1, which for nearly three decades has danced around humans but has yet to take us on directly.

The biggest bucket: What is happening with the cows?

Ron Fouchier, a flu virologist at Erasmus Medical Center in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, summed up what underlies all of the cow-related questions with the single question he submitted. It was, effectively: How can spread in cows be stopped, and the sooner the better?
“If this virus becomes enzootic” — endemic or entrenched — “in cows, it could well cause massive damage to human and animal health in the longer term,” Fouchier wrote. “I would find it unacceptable if authorities in the U.S.A. and/or the sector do not try to eradicate this new disease in cows a.s.a.p. If this is not deemed possible, I think the entire world would like to see the evidence and arguments.”
Isabella Eckerle, a virologist at the Geneva Centre for Emerging Viral Diseases, expressed a similarly overarching sentiment. “What is the plan of farmers and health authorities to get rid of this virus in the cow population to prevent further spread and mutation, or worse, major spillover to humans?”
Figuring out how to stop the spread of the virus in U.S. cattle herds requires far more information than exists in the public domain, however. Many of the experts we asked said what’s known about how the virus is spreading among cows cannot be the whole story.

Related: In light of H5N1 outbreak, U.S. in talks with mRNA vaccine makers on bird flu

Cow udders appear to be exquisitely sensitive to this virus; when dairy cattle are infected, their milk production decreases markedly and the milk they do produce is altered in color and viscosity. Milk from infected animals contains surprisingly high levels of virus. It’s believed that milking machines, which are not cleaned after each cow is milked, have been spreading the virus from infected to uninfected animals.
But some cows reportedly have mild respiratory symptoms and nasal discharge, raising questions about whether cows are also spreading the virus more in the way humans spread flu.
“There is a consensus building that this is most likely mechanical transmission through milking but I don’t think that answers a lot of questions/explains some of the weirdness,” said Thomas Peacock, an influenza virologist at the Pirbright Institute, a British organization that focuses on controlling viral illnesses in animals. “I don’t understand how if the virus is only transmitting through milk machines it got back into poultry (or alpacas!).
”While it is believed that this outbreak was caused by a single “spillover” event, when H5N1-infected wild birds somehow passed the virus to a cow or cows, the virus that has been spreading in cows has since spilled back into wild birds. Farm cats, domestic poultry, the odd carnivore species, and a herd of alpacas in Idaho have also been infected with this strain of the virus. Six of 18 alpacas in the herd became infected; three that were pregnant had spontaneous abortions.
There have also been three mild human infections associated with this outbreak; all have been in farmworkers.

Related: USDA faulted for disclosing scant information about outbreaks of H5N1 avian flu in cattle

Martin Beer, director of the Institute of Diagnostic Virology at the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut in Riems, Germany, lists a number of data points scientists need to know to try to figure out how to stop this outbreak. The number of cows in a herd that have been infected, which could be determined by looking for antibodies in their blood. The percentage of animals that shed virus — in other words, the portion that are infectious. Whether they emit virus from their muzzles or in their feces. How much virus is shed via those routes as compared to what is seen in milk?
Scott Hensley, a professor of microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine who is working on an H5N1 vaccine, has a trio of intertwined questions. Do cows that are infected but have no symptoms emit virus? Would quarantining infected cows stop spread within a herd? And how long are infected cows infectious? “It will be easier to control this virus if the infectious period is short. But this might not be the case,” Hensley noted.
Colleen Webb agreed that the specifics of spread in cattle need to be elucidated. “We know the basic epidemiological information for other avian influenza hosts, but not dairy cattle, and dairy cattle are different enough from these other hosts that we need dairy cattle-specific information,” said Webb, dean of the graduate school at Colorado State University, whose research focuses on data-driven modeling of disease and evaluation of preparedness and control strategies in livestock diseases.
Lots of data from a number of affected farms would answer these questions. In the absence of it, experimental infections of cows in laboratories can start to generate crucial information. Jürgen Richt, a veterinarian and director of the Center of Excellence for Emerging and Zoonotic Animal Diseases at Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, is currently doing just this type of research. So is Beer.
Florian Krammer, a flu virologist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, thinks it’s important to find out whether vaccinating cattle would stop transmission of the virus in herds — specifically whether vaccine doses created for people in the federal government’s stockpile could be used to tamp out spread. “Large scale vaccination in cows may be able to stop the outbreak,” he argued.
There remains the question of how widespread the virus is in herds in the U.S. Given that H5 viral particles have been found in a substantial portion of commercially purchased milk — one in five samples bought in 38 states — the belief is that the herds that have been confirmed are a tip of the iceberg. But is that so? How far has this spread?

Related: When should we start making H5N1 vaccine, and who will make that decision? In short, it’s complicated

“We still don’t know how many farms are affected and that’s a big problem for containment. As long as undetected cases are out there, new infections can and will occur,” said Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization at the University of Saskatchewan, in Saskatoon, Canada.Like Rasmussen, Diego Diel, a virologist at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., would like to know how far the virus has spread in cows. “Is the virus circulating in other countries … such as Mexico and Canada?” he wondered. So far Canadian authorities report they have not found the virus in cows. And work Rasmussen and an ad hoc team of researchers from across Canada have done looking for traces of H5N1 in store-bought milk has so far failed to turn up any positive results. Finally, there is the question of whether this virus is now on its way to being seeded in cattle in the United States — permanently circulating among cows and adapting to better infect them. Will cows who have recovered from the virus have the capacity to catch it again? Humans, after all, only develop transient immunity when they have a bout of flu.
“What is going to happen when a recovered herd gets infected again? Maybe someone knows the answer to this already, but I don’t,” said Richard Webby, a flu virologist and director of the World Health Organization’s Collaborating Center for Studies on the Ecology of Influenza in Animals, located at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. “Will this disease burn out, or continue to circulate?”
Webby wondered whether cows can be reinfected, and if so, whether subsequent infections differ from the initial one, with potentially different amounts of virus in the milk of infected cows, for instance. Though experimental infections might help to start generating an answer to this question, the best way to answer it would be to monitor farms that have been affected.
Andersen worries what the consequences will be if we get to the point where this question can be answered. “We will eventually find out, however, this is a good example of ‘Let’s not,’” he said. “Let’s just focus on stopping the current epizootic in cattle.”

What’s happening to farmworkers?

Within days of the USDA’s confirmation that H5N1 was infecting cows in some herds in Texas, Kansas, and Michigan, a human infection was confirmed. A farm worker developed a florid case of conjunctivitis — pink eye. A swab of his eye contained the bird flu virus.
Since then, two more bird flu cases have been detected in people, both in Michigan. One also had conjunctivitis, but more recently a farmworker developed more classical flu-like symptoms. There have also been many anecdotal reports of other cases of conjunctivitis on affected farms, and experts believe there have been more human cases than have been confirmed. In addition to the reluctance of farmers to cooperate with authorities trying to study the situation, many of these workers are migrants. Some are likely undocumented. Many may not have access to health care, and may be frightened about interacting with government officials.
There is great interest in doing serology studies among farm workers — drawing blood to look for antibodies to H5N1 to try to get a handle on how often the virus is infecting people on farms. Getting approval to do this work has been challenging. The Texas farmworker refused to give blood.
Without better access to workers, it’s hard to assess where the risk is highest on dairy farms, and hard to put together practical, usable programs to protect them.
“While we know that people with direct, unprotected exposure to animals infected with H5N1 are the most likely to get sick with the virus themselves, CDC is still working to determine how exactly that infection occurs,” the agency told STAT in its submitted questions. “Understanding and defining the specific risky behaviors is important so that we can then translate that into the best means of prevention.”
Meghan Davis concurred. A dairy and mixed animal veterinarian who teaches in Johns Hopkins University’s department of environmental health and engineering and medical school, Davis said that understanding specifically how workers are being exposed on farms could lead to the identification of better ways to use personal protective equipment or even other protective approaches that don’t involve PPE. Farmworkers have been reluctant to wear masks and goggles; the heat in barns makes these tools impractical and even potentially dangerous, impeding their vision of what’s going on around them.

Related: New evidence supports fear that drinking raw milk containing bird flu viruses may be dangerous

“This would be done with exposure studies on positive farms that would involve sampling of a lot of pathways of exposure — air, water, waste — and would include what we call personal exposure assessment,” she said.
Rasmussen would like to know whether the route of exposure to the virus — a splash of milk in the eye, say, versus inhalation of virus-laced particles — affects the type of infection an exposed individual develops, and the severity of the ensuing illness.

What is happening to the virus?

Since H5N1 was first isolated from a goose in China’s Guangdong province in 1996, the virus has undergone extensive evolution. There are now several clades — sub-families, if you will — of the virus circulating in various parts of the world, moved around by wild birds. The version responsible for the outbreak in cows is a virus identified as clade 2.3.4.4b, genotype B3.13. While this clade also circulates in Europe, the B3.13 genotype has not been spotted there.
Until this outbreak, cows were never thought to be susceptible to H5N1. Beer had shown calves could be infected in a lab, but in the real world, cows had never been part of the H5 story.
Is this outbreak a sign that something about the virus changed? Or was it just a lightning strike? This is a question a number of the scientists had.
“Are other 2.3.4.4b viruses with other gene constellations also able to infect cattle?” wondered Kanta Subbarao, a flu virologist at Laval University in Quebec City, Canada.

Related: CDC asks states and cities to keep flu surveillance at peak levels because of bird flu threat

Richt, the veterinarian from Kansas State University who is experimentally infecting dairy cattle, also wants to know whether this H5 virus is special, or if it just got lucky. “Nobody knows whether this ‘bovine H5N1’ is unique or not. Maybe regular ‘avian H5N1’ viruses are able to infect cattle too,” he said. Beer wants to know whether this version of the virus has changes that allow it to infect the mammary gland so efficiently, or whether other versions of 2.3.4.4b — ones circulating in Europe, say — could also do this if they got the opportunity.
Yoshihiro Kawaoka put into words a question that worries many scientists watching this situation, the worry that underscored Fouchier’s insistence that this outbreak must be stopped as quickly as possible. “We do not know whether the bovine H5N1 virus will become established in cattle,” wrote Kawaoka, a flu virologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. “If it does, will it evolve to adapt more towards ‘mammalian-like’ influenza viruses? … Will it pose a risk to human health?”
To date, the virus has not been seen to have the capacity to transmit efficiently among a mammalian species; any changes it acquires to allow it to do that could make H5N1 more adept at infecting humans.
Eckerle wonders if we’d know it, in real time, if the virus starts to change in ways that might signal dangerous adaptations for mammal-to-mammal spread. The USDA has been uploading basic genetic data to an international database, but those sequences do not indicate when the virus was collected or in which part of the country. It has been slow to share more complete genetic sequences, to the deep frustration of the scientific community. With this approach, there might be a delay in recognizing the development.

An intriguing curveball

Malik Peiris, who has studied the H5N1 virus since it started to infect people back in 1997 in Hong Kong, raised an intriguing and potentially hopeful question. Peiris, who is chair of virology at the University of Hong Kong’s School of Public Health, wonders whether the risk that H5N1 poses to people has changed in the decades since H5 first started infecting humans. Over the years, close to 900 people in 24 countries are known to have been infected, and about half of them have died.

Related: Wastewater testing specifically for bird flu virus will scale up nationally in coming weeks

Peiris and colleagues wonder, though, whether the 2009 H1N1 pandemic lowered the risk H5N1 poses. The neuraminidase protein on the 2009 virus, the N1, is quite similar, genetically, to the neuraminidase in H5N1. His group in Hong Kong has tested the blood of people who likely had H1N1 — which has circulated in the years since the 2009 pandemic — and tested stored blood samples from before 2009, looking to see if, when exposed to H5N1 virus, cross-reactive antibodies that might kickstart an immune response to H5N1 are present.
Their study is small, but suggestive that because of how similar the viruses are, some people may have antibodies that could help in the face of H5N1 exposure. It should be noted that in the years since 2009, there have been about 425 detected cases of H5N1 infection worldwide, of which about 180 were fatal. In the past decade, though, human cases have been less frequent and somewhat less likely to end in death.
“We need to ascertain how much protection this cross-N1 antibody will provide against H5N1 infection, at least to mitigate disease severity,” Peiris said, adding that his group is continuing to work on this question. “The question is what biological protective effect will they exert, if any?Andrew Joseph contributed reporting."

2024.06.08 22:20 TJLee08 Brothers Headstone

My brother passed away a little over a year ago, and we are trying to put the finishing touches on his headstone. Unfortunately we don't have the perfect picture to create the scene we are wanting for his headstone. I am hoping someone here can help us out. It is a large ask and I am willing to pay accordingly. I know there will have to be some back and forth as we dial in exactly what we want.
In general we are looking for a farm scene with his semi kind of front and center. There are some instructions in the attached files. Please feel free to reach out with questions. Again I am willing to pay for this large ask, I just don't know where to set the price at. Willing to work with anyone who can help.

2024.06.08 22:13 Radiant_Summer5358 5mx2.5x2.5m tiny space

Does anyone have any ideas on how best to use a 5mx2.5m space? Important would be to have a large bed, and a sleeping place for a kid. Kitchen and bathrooms aren’t necessary as those facilities would be outside of the ‚home.‘ The place is just used as a weekend getaway. Any layout recommendations, or free software suggestions that I can use to help me visualize it? Thanks so much!

2024.06.08 22:12 CaptainFalcon24 Gym owner scolded me in front of the entire gym for working with a local competitor

Listen everybody before you write me off as the enemy for working with the competition let me first explain myself and the situation, I've been going to my jiujitsu gym for maybe 2 years now and I love the people there including the owner despite him scolding me publically. This whole thing started a while back when I overheard a conversation from the owner of the gym talking about how he hated his website guy and that nothing ever gets done when he needs it done.
Well, It just so happens that I run a digital marketing agency and I specialize in SEO and website design, so I figured I'd throw my hat in the ring and offer to help him. My initial thought process was to do it for free and I offered him that and maybe in the future he might be interested in SEO or throw my name out there to others since I know people at my gym who own businesses and they're involved in a large affiliate program with tons of other gyms under the same umbrella. Anyway, I pitched this idea to him to help out for free and he shot it down saying they already have a website person and he wouldn't need my help.
I mean that's fine to me, if he doesn't need my help I won't take it personally but fast forward a few weeks and I see an ad to another gym in my local area on Facebook so I tell myself well they're already paying for advertising so maybe I can shoot them a message and see if they're interested. Well I struck up a conversation with the owner told him I train, where I train, and offered to help him obviously at a much more expensive price then I offered my gym owner and boom we had a deal.
Fast forward months from that and things were going to well until the gym owner called me into his office. He said he had heard I was working for such and such and said that he doesn't appreciate me bringing them extra business while training at their gym. I explained that he had turned me away originally when I offered and that I'm sorry but how does he expect me to pay for his gym membership if he's going to try and limit the business I do outside of his company? He wasn't fond of hearing that and that's when it kinda leaked out onto the mats with him getting louder and louder as I attempted to go to my regular scheduled class with I'm telling me to go train there if I love them so much and how because of this he's lost thousands of dollars in business as they've outranked them for "Jiu jitsu gyms near me" and other SEO terms to the local area.
Listen I feel bad if this is really costing him thousands as I understand the importance of rankings on Google especially since I found my gym using this exact same method originally, but what am I suppose to do just stop making money from them? I love the gym I train at because of all the friends I've made and size of the gym which gives me many options for training partners, and I would prefer not to transfer since the other gym is relatively small right now and primarily striking based with Jiu Jitsu just starting to be up and coming for them. What should I do?

2024.06.08 22:10 Samwich_Ganja DREAMLIGHT VALLEY IMPROVEMENT IDEAS

This is a comprehensive list of what I believe to be the most needed quality of life improvements for the players that still maintains the developers intended gameplay balance. If anyone has ideas of things to add, remove, or change to this list, sound off in the comments. I am not affiliated with Game Loft in any way and have no sway over their decisions, but maybe we can all make our voices heard and let them know what we want moving forward (after the latest bugs and crashes are fixed of course).
General Gameplay
  1. Not requiring villagers to be in your current area (valley/isle) in order to get their profession bonus
  2. Increase the surface area of tables (4 square tables shouldn't have a 1 square tabletop considering that the top is the widest part of most tables)
  3. No more limit on how many mannequins can be placed in a single room and the ability to place them outside
  4. Add a recycle function for all crafted items that costs dreamlight/star coins and gives you all your resources back, or is free but only partially refunds resources.
  5. Critter and villager schedules should be tied to an in game clock so people with fixed schedules don't lose access to certain characters/critters
  6. Every week should have a new quest that can earn you a furniture/wardrobe item so people who can't afford moonstones have a reason to log on every week (and give people who have finished all the quests ways to continue interacting with the villagers)
  7. Add a job board that allows you to assign villagers to gather one selected resource for you related to their profession (1 villager at a time per profession, the more valuable the resource you choose the longer it takes to generate it, can only gather up to a certain amount that depends on item value, can only gather resources related to their profession, and the items won't count toward your duties)
  8. Add a friendship level to all unlocked critter companions that can be increased by equipping, petting, playing with(with the play wheel or other critter toys), and feeding them (with food bowls). The levels of this friendship will unlock new features like the ability to gather items around you (as long as they are still highlighted blue), and place/pose them for all stances in photo mode (not just the critter stance); this would also apply to critters in companion homes, not just ones equipped in the wardrobe menu
  9. If a player is in range to interact with anything that isn't their critter, prioritize that over petting their critter
  10. All furniture with an animation should cycle indefinitely until toggled off by the player (especially fireworks)
  11. Give Daisy's challenges the same reset schedule as Scrooges shop instead of a 24 hour timer
  12. Allow feeding critters to count towards dreamlight duties even if you have already fed them that day
  13. No repeat memories.
  14. Alternative to no repeat memories is to have the repeats go into your inventory so that you can trade them with other players to help each other complete them
  15. You shouldn't be able to get nothing or a trivial amount of star coins from digging. Every time you dig you should get 1-3 resources or a small chance for a chest
  16. Add an option to switch off bonuses in the bonus menu (ex. you want to fish from white ripples or mine a gem vein when you're saving your pickaxe charges for stone or iron)
  17. Add an FOV (Field of view) Slider in the options menu
  18. Allow us to visually change the weather like the time of day (ex. make it rain without watering our crops for free or being able to catch fugu) and add a weather icon in the HUD so we know when it's actually raining even if we have rain turned off or fake rain turned on (HUD is only changed if we have manually changed the weather visuals)
  19. Allow skin color to be applied individually to our male and female avatars like every other aesthetic aspect in the wardrobe section
  20. Allow us to remove villager houses from the valley or make the valley bigger by expanding biomes or adding new ones. It has to happen eventually because you can't have infinite growth in a finite world (you would still have to place their house somewhere if you wanted to spawn them in to hang out or do their quests)
  21. Alternatively you could add a hotel run by some Disney/Pixar character (My vote is Snow White as the owner with the 7 dwarves as staff). You can upgrade the hotel to increase its capacity up to 10-20 rooms. You would then be allowed to remove up to that many houses, moving the occupants to the hotel. But you would first need to do a quest for every household that requires you to decorate a hotel room themed towards the house. You would be required to meet tag requirements that match the house such as traits that it has and the Disney universe it's from so the occupants feel at home (similar to Daisy's boutique challenge) IDEA CREDIT GOES TO USER - Euraylie
  22. Allow players to reskin villager houses. Adding more ways for us to blend them with our valley builds IDEA CREDIT GOES TO USER - Noggindrilln
  23. Save makeup to a mannequin along with clothes when editing it so we don't have to manually change our makeup every time we change our outfit
  24. Allow us to visually change large chests into other storage items we have unlocked, including TOM items (to allow players to make more creative and aesthetically pleasing storage areas)
  25. Stop making non quest items unsellable. They take up valuable space in your storage (ex. night shards, training manuals, etc.)
  26. Pathing fill button. Much like how we can hold a button to delete all connected pathing, we should be able to make a pathing outline and hold a button while selecting one of the outer pathing to completely fill the inner area
  27. Make smart transfer completely fill all stacks inside storage while leaving the remainder in your inventory (ex. don't leave a stack of 50 of an item in your inventory just because the storage can only hold 20 more. Put 20 in and leave 30 so we don't have to manually split the stack every time)
  28. Add a smart withdraw button so that you can transfer all items from storage that are already in your inventory
UI
  1. Add submenus for colors and patterns so you don't have a bunch of retextures clogging up your wardrobe and furniture menus (ex. You click on foodie loafers in your shoes and then a dropdown menu appears where you pick the color you want)
  2. Add sort functions and search bar for all shop/furniture/wardrobe menus
  3. Add furniture categories (ex. lighting, decor, etc.) for the furniture section of the crafting bench
  4. Show all tags for selected items regardless of whether or not you are in the dreamsnap category (this includes scrooges shop and crafting menu)
  5. Have all selected filter tags sorted the same way the dreamsnap section is (items with the most matching tags at top and fewest at the bottom instead of only items that match all selected tags)
  6. Add 2 item counts for selected items in the crafting bench menu (1 for items in your inventory/storage and 1 for items placed in your valley) so you know how many items you already have before making more
  7. Reset the crafting menu to the item you just crafted after crafting instead of auto scrolling back to the top
  8. All items that show up as pathing and fences in your furniture menu should also show up in that category at a crafting table (ex. bumblestone fences, zircon tiles, etc.)
  9. Have the back button hide the currently selected item in the shop and crafting menus instead of taking us out of the menu entirely (ex. when you select an item, it brings up a window on the right for that item. You can change the item by selecting a different one, but the only way to remove the window is to exit the menu altogether and reenter it without selecting an item)
Cooking
  1. Add a section for restaurant orders in the cooking menu (only available when cooking in Chez Remy)
  2. Add an option to turn off cooking/meal animations to make cooking faster
  3. Allow us to select recipes from our history so we can autofill multiple copies of a dish with specific ingredients we've already used without having to manually select specific ingredients every time
  4. Add a toggle near the autofill button to use the most valuable non specified ingredients instead of the least valuable when auto filling (when cooking with the purpose of selling)
  5. Add an item counter so you know how many of a particular meal you already have in your inventory/storage before you make it
  6. Widen the cooking pot so that some of the longer food items don't get stuck at the top of the pot if dropped directly into the center (PC only)
  7. Classify almonds as dairy/oil like peanuts are instead of as a fruit
Touch of Magic
  1. Every "Basic" item should have its own 50-100 TOM limit instead of having 50 for wardrobe and for furniture respectively. When entering the customize menu, you then have to select one of the basic items which takes you to a submenu where you can choose from your designs or a plus icon that you can select to create a new design for that particular item
  2. Remove the limit to how small and increase the limit of how large you can scale motifs
  3. Add the ability to scale length and width of motifs separately
  4. Remove the layer limit in TOM or at least increase it to 100
  5. Allow you to purchase TOM furniture from Scrooge with star coins, or make them craftable with resources, after you have purchased them from Daisy
  6. Add sign posts/billboards to daisy's shop
  7. Allow us to display multiple TOM items on a single mannequin. Or at least put generic clothes on the uncovered areas so I don't have a pantsless guy advertising my shirts
Photo/Dreamsnaps
  1. Add a dialogue option to any character (must be level 10 friendship with completed main friendship questline) you're hanging out with to get them to stand still and stop following you. Then when they are in this mode you can talk to them again to return them to normal function or select one of their poses or animations. Because they are also considered as no longer following you, you can do this with multiple characters to set up intricate dreamsnap scenarios
  2. Illumination radius for all lighting fixtures should be increased to make night shots more viable (and to generally improve the night time atmosphere)
  3. Allow players to hold tools in pictures (give people an incentive to purchase tools from premium shop)
  4. Have all TOM items disappear when you are in photo mode so they don't disqualify your dreamsnap attempt if you're not aware they're in frame
  5. Alternatively just allow TOM in dreamsnaps. If you can share them in Daisy's shop, why not in dreamsnaps
  6. Add a quest from Vanellope that gives you access to a virtual valley. You access it through a portal or computer and it brings you to an empty valley (no furniture, buildings, trees, etc.) so that you can set up outdoor dreamsnaps in it without destroying sections of your valley just to have to rebuild them again. You can't get resources in this valley and it resets every week for the new dreamsnap. All furniture is returned to your inventory, but any inventory items you may have placed would remain (all items placed on tables would be moved to the ground). There would also be an extra category in the furniture menu for spawning virtual villagers (only up to 1 of each villager you have unlocked)
  7. Get rid of outfit challenges. Having tag requirements for your outfit makes it difficult to craft an outfit that looks good and fits the theme for the week. Plus everybody already puts together an outfit to match the decor challenge and most people add decor to match the outfit challenge anyway. Just have tags for decor and outfits both apply to the current challenge
  8. Game Loft needs to be clear on exactly how tags and votes affect our score so we know how much we need to prioritize having a lot of tags over making a bettecleaner image to garner votes with.
  9. Increase the voting moonstones to 10-25 a day instead of 50 a week to incentivize more voting and daily log ins
  10. Add a 10-15 second timer to votes so people don't just vote randomly and actually have a reason to analyze each photo (would also benefit complex submissions that aren't easy to digest in 1 second and reward players for putting in more effort)
  11. Prevent NPC dialogue boxes from opening up while you're in photo mode
  12. Add a toggle when riding attractions to make them visible/invisible in photo mode
  13. Remove blinking from all player, critter, and NPC stances in photo mode
Online/Multiplayer
  1. Add the ability to interact with all ancient machines instead of just the cooker
  2. Multiplayer dreamsnaps (Dreamsnaps can still only be submitted by host to disallow multiple people submitting the same dreamsnap). Outfit tags from guest players will not contribute to the host's tag count
  3. Host player can still access furniture menu
  4. All players should be able to talk to villagers and do quests
  5. Allow all players to enter the host's house so we can give house tours as well as valley tours
  6. Allow fast travel
  7. Allow us to feed critters in other players valley without counting towards the hosts daily feeding limit
  8. Allow players to remove the Multiplayer hub if they don't want it or add the functions of the hub to the plaza well since it is a permanent fixture, and it is already how every other character enters your valley anyway
  9. Allow scramblecoin requests between players
DLC
  1. Add an "Excavator" to the ancient machines in the timbending table that can remove respawning clutter (holes, rocks, mushrooms, etc.) and give you the resources.
  2. No limit on how many ancient gardeners can be placed in one biome at a time
  3. Give auto cookers and gardeners the ability to generate memories
  4. Give the trolley tracks a function by letting the trolley move along them (so long as the track it's on is a closed loop) and maybe even add a train down the line. And give players the ability to ride them like the attractions.
  5. Allow us to move or turn off the timebending orbs that spawn across the isle and valley
  6. Add a coin flip to scramblecoin to determine who goes first (shake up the strategy meta a little)
  7. Increase scramblecoin rounds to 6 or have gold coins start spawning on round 3
  8. Allow players to dismantle timebending resources directly from our storage instead of requiring them to be in our inventory
  9. Allow players to select seeds from our storage while interacting with an ancient gardener instead of requiring them to be in our inventory

2024.06.08 22:05 turbo_mullet Something I wrote up a while back. It’s long but the readers here might enjoy this

(I wrote this as a gag joke after lightfall to follow behind a satirical ikora fan fic that I did involving no one out pizza’ng the hut- and while I didn’t really expect Destiny to end 10 years the way it did ((I love the ending)) I also got reminded of this boredom derived thing I wrote up one time on my lunch break. If anyone cares to read it then I hope you enjoy)
The witness stands alone in the garden.
Alone.
It made itself this way.
It thinks this is power.
— -There isn’t a need to hide from us child — -
“I wasn’t hiding. I was just trying to figure out who the hell gave you that haircut” the guardian says as he mounts a stump looking down at the last monster he’d ever face.
— -You’re alone? Isn’t this a treat. The God slayer and it’s target exchanging our truth’s at the heart of Eden- —
“Truth?” The guardian asks as he starts to walk down the stone staircase calmly. He takes note of the pools of radiolaria peppered around the arena he made his first truly great stand in. “What do you claim to know about truth? You- nah-nope, you know what? I don’t care what you think the truth is.” He exclaims.
The witness laughs. It’s haunting to think of something like that partaking in laughter. Or joy.
— -The truth… it’s hard to say. We are cut off from the ability to look into you like we always have. A small price to pay for eating the world inside your traveler. But we assure you that whatever truth you hold. Is our truth. Reflected in you. — -
The witness motions it’s hands into the shape of a triangle at it’s waste. As the cloud of faces that make up the witness violently billow into the gardens sky. The guardian feels gravity waves pull and push against his body.
— -The time has come— -
It stretches its arms to the sky. Something wicked trembles above. And below.
— -You were born alone. You died alone. You were reborn alone. And you will see this shape… alone. Like us— -
“We’re nothing like YOU… and he wasn’t reborn alone.” The ghost interjects brashly from somewhere unseen.
The witness looks at the guardian almost puzzled as static begins to splash around the pool of radiolaria closest to the guardian.
A single harpy raises from the pool. It looks over at the guardian, blinking it’s single blue eye before zooming up to one of the many vex gates in the hearts landing. The witness turns a hand to the harpy as a towering wall of stasis crystals shield it. It looks over at the guardian.
— - Why do you persist child?— -
“Someone as lonely as you wouldn’t get it” the guardian shrugs.
— -You will see this_!
In an instant, bursting a hole through the wall of stasis crystals, a rope of green light shot forth and coiled around the neck of the witness.
It looks over as the wall crumbles to reveal the rope extending from the now active vex gate. Outsteps the man who cast the strand down onto it. Then another figure emerges pulling itself through the gates frame with its four hands.
“Thank you Asher” the guardian whispers as he notices the radiolarian pools begin to drain into the stone cracks.
“Good job on that landing Crow” Says the four handed gate traverser.
“Stop being modest Eido you helped me practice for 3 days” Crow says to Eido with a grin. “Just make sure your ghost is with mine and the guardians Eido. Germaine is the best… but you gotta admit he’s still a little green.” Crow tells Eido before brushing hair out of his eyes and turning to wave at the guardian with his rope-free hand.
The guardian laughs at this. In a time like this. Crow is relaxed and collected. It’s admirable.
— -Folly— -
The witness reaches at the rope but cannot touch it. To its surprise.
“Are you confused?” A voice asks the witness from seemingly nowhere.
“It was a beautiful trick making that cabal emperor one of your toys, but even you couldn’t see the forest for the trees.”
A white orb whizzes from a crack in reality and hovers around the rope inspecting it.
“Brilliant isn’t it? The emperor of the cabal commissioned great works but he didn’t have to do any of those works.” The white orb scoffs.
He stopped with a snap and spun up in excitement before resting in only a way that someone who would seek a reward from knowing something that somebody else didn’t know could.
“His daughter reworked some of the albinos tech. A splash of this. A splash of that. Voila. Suppression tech turned into a glove that channels and repels at the same time. It’s… like a paradox. Even I, Toland, cannot fully wrap my head around this one.”
He whizzes around the witness before stopping in front of its face.
— - if you think this is enough you’ve wasted more of our precious time… such a sin— -
The witness extends a hand to face Crow and Eido and closes its eyes as the guardian jumps into the air and fires a rocket.
The velocity isn’t enough and the rope snaps before the rocket meets its target.
Crow dodges as Eido jumps into the air, exploding into brilliant arc energy and thrusting a glaive charged with super energy down into the side of the witness.
The guardian reloads…
Ghost whispers “Fire.”
A green rope shoots from behind a column of stone into the smoke. Crow ties the strand to the pillar before sliding into a dodge.
“Light work” crow says to himself as he throws another rope of green light into the bombardment of rocket fire the guardian is discharging. He ties it. Dodges. Throws another. Ties another. Throws a forth. Ties it… pause. He takes a breath before running over to the guardian and Eido. Upon his approach the guardian lets his last rocket fly.
The smoke clears. The witness is twice lasso’d by the neck with both it’s arms crossed and pulled to the pillars. The guardian notices that crow is 4 finger sleeves short on the glove Caiatl made for him.
He’s really outdone himself.
Eido looks down. “I’m going to miss that glaive… eh… but I didn’t want to risk a fist of havoc. Figured I’d charge it to do the cool twirly thing you hunters do.” She says.
“Nice” crow exclaims as he and the guardian look at her impressed.
— -You’ve managed to only stall the inevitable. Make a crack. A glimpse. A door that’s opening means nothing if what waits on the other side is entropy— -
“That’s not the only door that’s open” Toland says to the witness as he floats down in front of the three guardians.
Toland begins to glow white as the witness tugs at his trap.
In the air behind the guardians a hive portal rips into the garden.
The witness looks up.
— -majestic— -
“This…
-He glows brighter-
…is unfinished business” says Toland
A large sword of flame bursts into existence on the left of the portal. Then a second next to it. A third on the right side of the portal. Then a fourth next to the third. Finally, a brilliant blue sword made of pure crystalline stasis simply… becomes in the center.
Eido extends her arms creating a void bubble around her and the others as the swords shoot down into the flesh of the witness.
From the portal, the witch queen herself makes her entrance. As she raises an arm she instantly calls down lightning. It crashes and freezes. She calls more. It crashes and freezes. “You will know ‘majestic’ in a direct fashion” she says…
A staff of stasis emerges from the portal. Then the arm. Then the man. “Extraordinary isn’t it?” Osiris says to Savathun as he finishes his planned and practiced portal exit.
“I would expect no less than extraordinary from you O phoenix mine” Savathun replies to Osiris.
The 6 guardians stand together in front of the bubble.
“You guys ready to give everything you have? I need y’all to land this. I only have one shot left.” The guardian tells them.
They look at him and nod before commencing.
Toland flies into the air opening up portal after portal. Each raining down needles of sorrow on their target.
Savathun bursts into a brilliant light before turning to the guardian with a smug expression “this one is new” she informed before extending both her arms to the side. Above her left hand a sword of arc, a sword of void, and a sword of solar power form. Again above her right hand. She claps her hands together and in a wave of black static the swords merge into a single holographic blade of light.
She sends it as Crow leaps into the air. Firing arrow after arrow of void power.
“Is the trigger work like you showed me?” Eido hollers this question to the guardian over the chaos as she pulses the divinity trace rifle she was gifted by the guardian.
The guardian nods to her as he puts a hand on his holstered hand cannon.
Osiris sees this from behind Eido where he’d been throwing a seemingly endless amount of duskfield grenades from. He inhales deeply and thinks of Saint. The grenades begin to launch faster… and colder.
The guardian slowly walks through the midst of the attack towards the witness. Hand still resting on his holstered weapon.
They’ve exhausted everything. They each look at one another momentarily as the guardian continues to walk into the hell of smoke, static, void, ice and fire. Knowingly.
They gather themselves behind the guardian. As the smoke clears.
The witness sits crumpled upon itself. The faces in the void above it’s head escaping rapidly with each of it’s twitches.
It looks up at the guardian.
“Isn’t this rich” it says.
It coughs up blood. Looking down at the glaive in its side. The arm barely hanging on from the sword. A portion of its torso missing from savathuns double tri-blade. It’s lower body and upper left torso frozen in place.
It laughs hysterically as the last face escapes and the void above its head ceases to exist. The laugh turns into a gurgled cough. Blood spatters out from its wounds.
“In perfect guardian fashion. 6 of you would ascend on me” it reflects before coughing more blood against its guard and causing it to spatter back onto its face.
“From the billions it took 6. Only 6. 6 who can’t even understand the final shape…” It says as it looks around in righteous disbelief.
“You’re wrong” said the guardian.
The witness looks at him in confusion as it attempts to lift the nearly amputated arm but fails.
“There’s 7 of us” says the guardian as he levels his ace of spades at the witness.
“Seven?” The witness puzzles
Solar light explodes around the guardian and drains into ace of spades.
It glows brilliantly.
“And we can understand the final shape. It’s you who can’t understand it” the guardian exclaims as he tightens his grip.
“It’s not the end. It’s not the death of all things. It’s not this war you’ve waged across time and space. No. You’re an idiot for not being able to see it. You are not worthy. How could you be? There isn’t a first or final shape. There’s only been one shape all along and there’s only ever going to be… one shape.” the guardian says as he grips even tighter while the 5 others around him start to bow their head.
“That shape has always been THE FRIENDS WE MADE ALONG THE WAY!”
The guardian fires his last shot.

2024.06.08 21:53 dashboardcomics Metroid RPG: IMPORTANT UPDATE + DEV DIARY

Metroid RPG: IMPORTANT UPDATE + DEV DIARY
TLDR: Game is done. All that's left is to rebuild my website as a place to host it (since I don't trust Google docs) but my broke ass can't afford a yearly squarespace subscription, and my dumbass doesn't know how to code html. So I'm open to suggestions on what to do. I'm also open to suggestions on how to announce this since I don't like being on social media, but I want a place that people can have easy access to for updates.
Full: I’m not sure where else to post something like this. I don’t like to be on social media, & I still haven’t rebuilt my website. Reddit seems to be the place where most of you even discovered this project, so for now I’m going to post this announcement here, and I’m open to suggestions on ways to announce the release date of the final build. (Let me know what ya'll use: Tiktok, Instagram, smoke signals etc.)
I’ve just finished the last of the Illustrations for the Metroid RPG, which means the bulk of the development is done. All that’s left is to compile all the pages together into a single document and figure out how to rebuild my website to host it, as I intend on it being free for all to play.
Most of you may only know about the Metroid RPG for a few months now, but in reality this has been a project I've been working on & off since 2022. This final leg of development has been the most grueling and agonizing part of this passion project. The finish line is always the least fun part of any artistic endeavor.
The fun part is always the beginning stages: the conceptualization, the blue sky phase, the part where you get to daydream all day and everything just works exactly the way you think it will. But the closer you bring that dream to physical reality, the part where you realize not everything you imagined worked as well as you thought it would, the constant cuts and compromises, and the tedium of polishing the presentation until you’re sick of looking and thinking about it, it’s those things that make your once burning passion fizzle into exhausted embers.
For many artists there’s an inherent fear of finishing a product. When it’s complete and out there, it’s no longer in this safe bubble free from scrutiny. Once it’s out in the public, it’s vulnerable to criticism, and because so many artists inevitably put a lot of themselves into their work, any points of critique are felt as attacks on their character (Even when they know it’s not)
This is why a majority of fanworks or creative products in general never see the light of day. That’s become less of a problem for me over the years as I have 20 things I wanna work on at a time, and no time to do even 1 at a time. So it’s always a relief to finally finish something so I can move on to the next shiny thing. For me the frustrating part of finishing something is the sensation of being at the finish line, and constantly feeling like the ribbon is being moved out of reach cuz there’s 20 small imperfections that need to be ironed out. It’s a cruel battle between my impatience to finish something, and my obsessive perfectionism.
This feeling gets compounded the longer I’ve been working on something, and this thing has been cooking longer than I expected. This whole thing started after I played the original Metroid gamebook, Zebes Invasion Order, back in November 2022. I fucking hated it. I thought It was a very boring and poorly designed game, and when I see something obviously broken, my brain hyper-fixated on figuring out why it's broken and ways to fix it. (So ya know, it's been great living in a country with a fucked economy and even more busted power structure)
I thought of ways to improve the gameplay, add actual depth to it and add conventions from the modern games. I wouldn't do anything with these ideas until January, when the Metroid Prime remaster came out. That re-ignited my passion for the metroid series which made me want to make this idea a reality.
I ended up designing the entire game, creating the map, conceptualizing the world, and completing all the writing, all in 2 months. I even got play testing done during this time. At this point I was still working as a janitor at a hospital. We don’t have break rooms so I would take my breaks in the utility closet, this was where I got the bulk of my play testing done.
Shortly afterwards, I compiled everything into the beta build and did the open beta test later that year. I was gonna resume work on it after getting enough feedback from the playtesters, but got wrapped up in my other projects.
I wouldn’t resume it again until April of this year after I completed the latest chapter of my webcomic. My webcomic once again failed to take off no matter how hard I tried to promote it. It feels like no matter what I do, no one seems to care about my original work and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. (Cuz the people who do read it say it's good, apparently...)
The Metroid RPG is the first thing I’ve ever created that a large number of people have shown interest in. So begrudgingly I decided to finish this project once and for all, and then commit the rest of the year to other fan projects as an avenue for people to see my original body of work. I also hope to use this gamebook as a proof of concept to reach out to other creative people and do more gamebook collaborations.
Given the total hours I spent on this, if this was my full time job (which I still hope to achieve someday) I could’ve gotten this entire thing done from start to finish in 3 months. But between having to work a day job & raising a family, all my ambitions have halted to a snail’s pace, and I wanna be spriniting like a cheetah.
There’s so much more I want to do, some of it Metroid related, some of it Nintendo related, most of it are original ideas I want to share with the world. If you end up playing the Metroid RPG and enjoyed yourself, I hope you’ll follow me on the rest of my journey to share my stories and worlds.
~Eli

2024.06.08 21:51 Old_Hoonter Should I buy this?

[D&D5e]
I was reluctant to post here because there might be a bias but I figure I'd give it a go. I've asked in a couple other subreddits about which VTT to purchase between fantasy ground or Foundry and Foundry is recommended by a large margin.
My big stall on this is that I'm currently running 5e Decent into Avernus and I saw that Fantasy Grounds has the module on sale now and it gives me everything. Monsters, items, maps, NPCs, etc. It looks great.
Does Foundry have something comparable to this or am I dumping hours/days of prep work getting it to where everything is on the VTT?
I do have the PDF already for DIA. No it's not on d&d beyond. And I am new to VTT's this will be my first step in besides free roll20. Which is meh imo.
Thanks for your advice!

My ideal lifestyle is one in the countryside, away from the smog, the rat races, the cars, the constant hurry. Growing one's own vegetables, building beehives out of spare wood, planting saplings to reforest an area, exchanging preserves with neighbors in addition to tons of other DIY projects. Making investments into solar panels, better insulation, passive heat exchangers, rainfall capture, etc. in order to life a self-sustainable life without needing to buy much. A life of learning academic knowledge, skills, instruments, crafts, creativity and practical knowledge. Figuring out how to enjoy any activity, instead of choosing just the few familiar ones. A routine of the exercise, meditation and mindfulness that keeps one grounded, grateful and aware of the lessons learnt. The ability to goof around without prying eyes, and the time to experience the childish delight of just being a part of the world. Few meaningful friends over large superficial groups. I'd like to find a rural place with progressive people, where knowledge, humility, genuineness, adventurousness, creativity, tolerance, comraderie and kindness are emphasized.
I like avoiding egotistical thoughts. I detest the more usual kinds of normie conversations that devolve into competitions, fueled by insecurity. I want to be real with someone, vulnerable. I want to talk about deep, logical and mind-broadening topics. Even when not considering other people, I want to diminish my private consideration of ego adjacent thoughts. I've found that self centered thoughts often lead to anxiety, inadequacy, and fear, while thoughts totally devoid of self can be blissfully zen.
I like living by the motto "If you love something, set it free". I'm keenly aware of how obligation can ruin even one's favorite activity. My struggles, my mood, my chores, my failures are my own. If a partner chose to help, I'd try to be mindful to view their help as something gracious, and not something to rely upon, something to begin to expect. No good deed should be punished by entitlement.
I like structured care and change. While I think that I have a decent memory, I'm under the impression that we are very biased in our day to day thinking. We assume that the other person will understand words in the same way, that their preferences, morals and annoyances are similar to ours. Even when informed otherwise, it is hard to avoid falling back to the same old routine way of thinking. I want to write down these differences and regularly remind myself of them in order to avoid the small frictions, to augment giving.
If my ideal lifestyle and I seem appealing to you, please contact me through a message. Simple small talk messages like "Hello", or "How are you doing?" will be ignored.
Thanks for reading.
