When I(18F) was in fifth grade (age 10-11 for any non-Americans), there was these new twins who moved from the other side of the country to join my class. For some reason, these two kids did everything they could to make my life miserable. I think it's because I was socially unaware and a bit odd as a child, but I'm not sure. The boy twin was this very big kid who would regularly beat me up and the girl twin would humiliate and spread rumors about me. Of course, the teachers never did anything about it.
Luckily, these two went to different middle and high schools, so I wasn't bullied and I had a pleasant time in school after that. Most kids were not happy about going to middle school, but I was excited for them to stop torturing me. However, last month, I got a job at a new grocery store in my neighborhood. However, last week, the girl who bullied me got a job at the same grocery store.
At first, I thought "It's been seven years, she probably changed", but just now a few coworkers asked me "Did you really have sex with the manager so you could get hired here?" I shouted at them "NO!" and asked them where they heard that, and they said "The new girl told us"
I don't want to go through this again. I am genuinely considering switching jobs to get away from her. I feel so lost and helpless.

HR is your friend in these situations. She's making it a hostile work environment. Get a notepad and write down every time with the date and time and what the incident was. Keep a record of it.
If you work at a small store with no HR then go to management but skip management if you have an HR go to HR first.
I'm almost positive your manager doesn't want the reputation of being a sleaze and making 18 year olds sleep with him to get hired. If he's a decent person at least.

This post is an update from my previous post. I'd recommend reading that post first. The last few days have been pretty chaotic. First of all, I found out the new girl at my workplace, who was my childhood bully, was spreading another rumor, claiming that my boobs were fake. I took the advice of most of the people in the comments of my post, and sent an email to my manager, telling him about how she made up a rumor claiming that I slept with him to get hired. He responded, saying that this is a very serious issue and that he wants me to come into work tomorrow to get my side of the story, because my bully had a shift then. The manager came in, looking absolutely furious. My manager spoke with her, me and a few of my coworkers to see what was going on.
After my manager spoke with my bully, I saw her leaving. She came up to me, said "Fuck you, you tattletale slut" and left. I asked my manager what happened with her at the end of my shift. He said "I spoke with her about the bullshit she was spewing. She tried acting innocent, but everyone I asked said that she was the one who made that shit up. She's fired, we don't have to worry about her anymore." I was kind of hoping that she would throw a temper tantrum, but that didn't happen. I finally stood up to her, thanks to the advice and words of support from Reddit. I'm pretty sure my past self, the little girl who had her backpack stuffed in a shit-filled toilet on her 11th birthday, would be so proud of me.

I (29F) have an older Step-brother, Chris (42M) who has been a nightmare since the day my mom married his dad.
Let me give a bit of background: Our parents married when I was 4 and he was 17. Both our parents were widowed. After their wedding, we moved to the US since my mom had American citizenship through marriage. I was born in the US too, but after my dad died when I was 1, my mom and I moved back to Colombia. Step-dad got his residency through marriage and my step-brother because he was a minor.
My step-brother wasn't a big fan of me. My only memories of him are just constant bullying. He would be left in charge of me since he was studying locally and lived with my parents, but mostly his 'babysitting' really meant things like locking me in the guest bathroom or the shed outside. He would steal my lunchbox whenever he was the one who dropped me off at school. He even began to harm my pets. I have an old cat that has been with me for almost 22 years. He tried more than once to run her over with his car. My parents never believed any of it. He's the classic golden child. My mom absolutely wanted a son instead of a daughter, so my step-brother took priority over me.
The bullying just kept getting worse and creepier. He had this long key for the bathroom. The door was designed in case it got locked by accident, one could open them by inserting a long stick or key through a small hole on the outside. He would use it to walk in on me showering. My underwear would disappear sometimes and I know for a fact it was him. He also started taking pictures of me sleeping. One night I woke up to him taking care of himself next to me while I slept. I yelled obviously. My parents came over, but he wasn't in trouble. I was for 'tempting him'. I was 14 when this happened. He was 27.
No one helped me and he got bolder until he did something I am still in therapy for when I was 16. It got to a point where I called my biological half-older brother Sam(48M and son of my biological father's first wife) to see if I could live with him and his wife, Sandy, during my last two years of high school. When Sam found out what was going on, he confronted my mom. My mom didn't care and just told him to take me so long he never asked her for money. Done and done. My brother and his wife became my legal guardians and took me in with my cat and the old family dog since I didn't trust leaving any living creature with Chris around.
My parents never checked on me. My extended family from my father's side knew what happened and they immediately got together to ensure I could finish school well and go to college. I don't know my maternal family at all.
Thanks to my paternal family, including Sam's mother and her family, I got my bachelor's and master's, no student debt, and work as a nurse practitioner. I still live with Sam, his wife, and their two kids, and I pay a small rent. Neither Sam nor his wife expected me to pay anything, but that's the least I can do for the two people who have taken care of me for 13 years. For anyone wondering why I didn't move, it's incredibly expensive where I live and Sam insisted I stay with them until I save enough to buy my own home.
Things seemed okay until my mom messaged me recently. She had not messaged me since I was 18 when she told me she no longer had any responsibility to me. In this message, she sounded overly friendly, telling me how she missed me and asking how I was doing. I was a bit creeped out but decided to be nice, telling her about what I had done since leaving her care. She seemed very interested since apparently she knew I was a nurse, but not what kind I was. She began asking me about my salary. I didn't tell her anything about it, but that it was enough to pay the bills.
My mom then began texting about Chris and how he was barely making any money due to his student debt. Apparently, Chris never finished a degree, jumping from career to career. He is now working in my stepdad's used cars business as a salesman, but most of his pay went to pay the substantial student debt he got over the year.
I told my mom how sorry I was that Chris was having a hard time and wished him luck. That's when my mom finally got to what she wanted: She texted me I needed to pay his student debt so he could finally begin to 'make the money he deserves like the man of the family'. I just turned off my phone.
When I got home, Sam was surprised since I was usually the last to arrive. Sandy wasn't home yet. I told Sam what happened and showed him my mom's text messages. I don't think I've seen Sam this angry ever. He told me to block my mom, stepdad, and Chris if I had not done so yet.
After talking with Sam and Sandy, I called my boss to ask the next day and the one after off. This gave me a 4 day weekend including the days I'm normally off shift. My boss was more than okay with this and told me to just take it easy and let her know if she could help.
This backfired because the next day my mom and Chris decided to come to Sam's house to speak to me. I was alone since Sam and Sandy were at work, and the kids were at school. I immediately called Sam and told him what was going on. He told me not to open the door and that he was on his way.
My mom spent the whole time screaming that I 'owed them' for raising me and that my 'sweet brother' deserved the money. Chris was going around trying to find a window or door unlocked. There wasn't any since the windows have safety bars and the only other door is in the closed garage and one in the yard. The yard one was locked and just in case I locked the one in the garage.
I won't post what he called me when he saw me from one of the windows, but basically, he pretty much told me they should have thrown me away when I was a baby since I grew to be a 'b'. He pounded in one of the windows so hard, he actually cracked the glass.
Eventually, he gave up and went back to the front door, clearly trying to kick it down. I didn't have anything to worry about, the door was a security door, but I was still very scared. Between yelling, threatening, pleading, and insults, I finally heard Sam screaming to them to get lost.
I only saw things from the window; Sam pretty much dragged them both off the porch. They got to a point I couldn't hear, but I saw my mom and Chris pale and look scared before they pretty much ran to their car and drove off way past the legal speed limit.
Sam came in a bit after and immediately went full overprotective brother mode, asking me if I was okay. He kept saying sorry and hugging me. Sandy arrived almost immediately after and she looked like she was about to commit a felony.
Apparently, Sam threatened him with filing charges for what he did to me when I was 16. My brother's ace: my stepdad was willing to testify against his own son. That seemed enough to get Chris off our backs, but not my mom.
Since then, it's been 3 days, and my mom has sent texts, called non-stop with various numbers, and rallied a group of people who are supposedly my maternal family to harass me for money. She claims that money should legally be hers since she's my mother. That it's my late father's missed child support.
Sam is helping me find a lawyer to get a restraining order on my mom and I plan to take my step-dad's offer to testify by pressing charges against Chris. I can't say I can forgive him for not stopping his son, but I appreciate he's at least trying. I don't know the details, but Chris did something to a relative of his dad and since then they had a really bad fallout. I took my boss' offer and will be on vacation for a few more days.
But here it is. My vacation days are getting eaten up and my therapist might need a therapist after. Thankfully my dark sense of humor and supportive paternal family are keeping me somewhat sane.

Update: May 14, 2024
I didn't think I would be making an update so soon, but my mother is unrelenting.
To the people that were so kind and gave me advice earlier, thank you so much. It really helps to have people show kindness in difficult days. I follow with the advice to freeze my credit and I will be getting a new phone for personal use. Will have to keep my old phone for work for a little.
Now to update on the situation: We are going through with pressing charges and might do a civil lawsuit for two years of child support my mother owns. We are not sure yet of our chances on it, but my brother San wants to go scorch earth.
As for my mother, she began a new campaign. She's been posting about me false accusing my step-brother Chris of SA. She's been accussing me of being a 'temptress that tried for years to sleep with my brother' and even got a few relatives, who I just found out are my aunts, to join in saying they were witnesses. I never met these women in my life.
My step-father actually commented in her post saying my mom was lying and accusing his own son of being a p*do. That's how I found out what was the big fallout between them. Step-brother went after one of Step-father's nieces. I don't know the girl's age, but she has to be about my age if I'm thinking of the right person. If not, she's younger than me.
A lot of my biological father's relatives have also gone into social media to call out my mother, saying she had always claimed she was an orphan and had no family, while now she has three sisters.
It's a mess, I'm just watching for now and being a stay-at-home aunt. My nephews love it since we go out after they finish homework for crazy shenanigans. My boss has helped me with some paperwork for leave of absence and I should be off for about 6 weeks. After I'll be mostly working from home for a few weeks.
Not the greatest update, and to be sincere things are not fun. But its nice to spend time with the kiddos at least.
Also, forgot this: No, my mom is not likely sleeping or in a relationship with my stepbrother. Some people had mention this. My mom always wanted a son. I was a disappointment because I was born a girl. She treats my brother like he's her real son and I think she truly loves him as a mother. She made sure to tell me how disappointing it was for her when I was born.

I was recommended to post here but wasn't sure were to start. My mother was widowed when I was 1 years old. My biological father was much older than her, she was a second wife with 20+ age difference. After that she remarried her hometown sweetheart and adopted his 17-years-old son.
My dad was American, mom is Colombian. I was born in the US, then we moved for a few years back to Colombia, and we returned to the US when I was 4.
My whole life my mother constantly complained about the fact I was a girl. She would say things like: "If you were a boy, maybe we could have gotten more from you father' or 'girls are so useless'. All I was for her was the problem child. She took my inheritance and squandered it. Mostly on things for my step-brother.
Whenever she had guests, she would always introduce me and joke how I ruined her body and wasn't even worth it since I was a girl. Most her friends thought I had some kind of mental illness because of her lies about me being mentally 'behind' (she used the r word). She would often blame it on my gender, though. Saying because I was born a girl, I was clearly inferior.
During holidays, I would be left behind with a sitter. I was just too much of a 'problem child' and would ruin things for my 'sweet brother'. We only have one family picture from when I was 5.
If I got anything nice with my own money, my mother would take it from me if it was something like make up or clothes, saying I wasn't attractive enough or worthy enough to have such nice things. I should just stick with a plain face since it will make it easier for me to find a job when I was done with high school. She had no intentions of letting me go to college.
But the worst part is she never protected me. My stepbrother is a predator. At first he just bullied me. Stealing my food, locking me in dark places. When I hit puberty though, he began to do worst things. Walking on me when I showered, even if I locked the door, stealing my underwear, watching me sleep, and he even SAed me when I was 16 and he was 29.
My mother blamed it on me, saying I was tempting her poor sweet boy.
I was saved by my biological half-brother and his wife. They took me in at 16, finished raising me and put me through college with the help of my paternal family. Even my father's first wife pitched in and has always been kind to me. She's more a mother to me than my mother was.
Now I'm 29 years old, I have a good career as a nurse practioner and I'm saving to buy my own home. My mother found out about this and has been demanding I give her my money because she is my mother and my money should be hers. She also demands that I pay my abusive step-brother's student loans.
Since I refused to fall on my dear mother's demands, she has now gone online to post I am a 'temptress' that is trying to ruin her son's life and that I refuse to pay her back for all the care and love she gave me over the years. She even had some women that are supposedly my aunts join her in this. I never met any of my maternal family. As far as I knew, my mother was an orphan. Now I suddenly have three aunts that have seen how bad a person I am.

So, this might be my last update on the mess with my mother and step-brother since we're finally starting the legal fights, but I finally had a good laugh.
In my previous posts, I haven't said a lot about my biological father. He died when I was one year old, so I never really met him. I have one picture of him holding me when I was an infant. I mostly know him from stories from his family. What I do know is he was a man of means. He had a lot of assets that he had carefully divided in his will. Not like so rich I'll never have to work type. Just rich enough that I would be able to live comfortable so long I worked and did right by my finances.
I was not aware he had made sure to leave me with anything. Neither did my half-brother Sam, his son with his first wife, I'm the daughter of an affair partner turned second wife. My understanding was that anything I inherited was wasted by my mother to buy things for her predator step-son Chris who she prefers to me. He was my abuser growing up. In her words: "Daughters don't need inheritance. Just marry a wealthy old man like me."
Well, since my mother and Chris have been harrassing me lately, we drove to my dad's lawyer to get some things we need from my dad's records for the lawsuit we are planning. He's a sweet older man, kinda looks like my dad a bit, and was my dad's best friend. When we met, he received me with a hug and told me how happy he was to finally meet with him. His wife was there too and she also gave me a big hug and told me we needed to have dinner at their place.
Once we all caught up, we found my mother had been faking receipts to get money from my trust. A lot of it. Some of it from when I was under Sam's guardianship. And she's not the executor of my trust, she had to provide receipts for anything. She's been sending receipts 'for me because I'm still in medical school'. I finished school in 2021.
Well, her meal ticket not only got torn, and now she's in big trouble. Because this is fraud and basically my hands are tied about pressing charges or not. She claims me as a dependant on her taxes, so my dad's lawyer would refund her for her expenses. He basically told me there's just no way we can keep this just in civil court. He had to contact IRS and the police. Doesn't help she's been using my social security number for some things she shouldn't. (Thank you for the people that advised me to freeze my credit. You guys saved me for sure.)
I probably won't be able to post for quite a while. And I'm going to be incredibly busy. I'm just mentally exhausted about how much has happened. I wouldn't have done anything about my mom using my trust if she had left me alone. I wouldn't even know about it because the trust is set for me to take over it with proof of marriage or graduating college. And since I didn't know about it, I never sent the required paperwork to take control. She could have milk it dry if she left me alone and just kept sending fake information.
I am in the process to get what's left of my trust. There's quite a bit in it and should be enough for me to get a house or condo if I mix it with my savings, and still have left over to invest or do other things safely. I might wait for a while to buy anything though. I don't know how safe it would be since my mom still has my social security number.

m2cwf: It doesn't sound like OP can drop any charges - mom didn't just defraud OP, she defrauded the IRS and the executor of the trust (or the trust itself, not sure if that's a thing), she committed identity theft. She's in trouble for sure, as OP says it's largely out of her hands and the big guns are going after mom now.
OP I hope she gets all the consequences she deserves, and you get all the justice that you deserve for dealing with all the mess and harassment!

Op, I can only recommend that you use some of that money to outfit your new home with the top notch security system.
Once you have access to your trust , you’ve cut off her money and that matters more anything , it may tip her over the edge.

OOP: She is. I know my step-dad isn't. Not sure if my step-brother went for naturalization. He was a resident since he came to the US as a minor.

This is part of what's become a somewhat sprawling fan fiction project that I posted a version of some other material from well over a year ago, on a now deleted account with a user name I can't even remember. That original effort ended up ballooning, splitting apart into multiple pieces, with each of those also in turn growing further. Like cancer. I suppose you could call it fluff background for a homebrew regiment (or it would be if I bothered to play the actual tabletop game, which I don't), but it's expanded beyond that to world building that doesn't even loosely connect to anything to do with the regiment.
I've been working on these off and on for months, and decided now was as good a time as any to start posting them. Feudal Japan seems to be an evergreen setting; there's a baseline of people who are always interested in it, but it seems to be especially popular right now, between the immense success of the new Shogun show and numerous recent and upcoming releases in the video game world. It's also the season of Dune, and I feel elements of its use of language have echoes here (for better or worse; I know some will find it obnoxious).
The influence is obvious of course, but if people just want 'Samurai in 40k', this isn't that. That already exists anyway; Graham McNeill played with many of those stereotypes with his Yasu Nagasena character. This is adjacent to, and chronologically after in terms of themes, such a thing. In fact, if people are burned out on that kind of thing, perhaps give this a chance, because within this world that kind of standard portrayal is essentially bullshit (though within the setting some people believe it to be true).
This is an early piece I've never been fully satisfied with, but it serves as an origin story. It provides a foundation for what follows.

I was never supposed to command a regiment. No onna-bushi ever is. Oh, we have ranks and are in the chain of command. But it's also understood that we're last in the pecking order; officers from every other company take priority.
But then again, it was also never supposed to be that the entirety of the upper officer corps, including all of the company captains, except for those of the units already heavily engaged on the perimeter and unable to attend, of not just one but six regiments are killed when an unlucky heretic super heavy artillery shell manages to penetrate through all 250mm of the plasteel reinforced ferrocrete of the command bunker. A one in a thousand chance. But that's precisely what happened after Colonel Tanaka, Kohi rest his soul, in his great wisdom, insisted that everyone attend a face to face meeting to coordinate the defence of the spaceport.
Everyone that is except me, as well as another captain whose company had been deployed on a training patrol, and who hadn't been heard from since the traitors made their sudden planetfall, as well as the commanders of the companies already mired in combat. No one even bothered to summon me from where I was on the other side of the compound, inspecting the siwa mounts. The plan would be decided without my input and my orders would be relayed to me afterward. Now, to be completely fair, my company and I were only technically part of the 39th, having been temporarily attached to the regiment solely for the duration of our trip to Zaebasha Epsilon, where we were to be assigned as auxilia to the Order of the Tearful Dahlia.
Given the steady stream of cultists currently pouring from the general direction of where the Adepta Sororitas Convent is located it's probably safe to assume that assignment has been rendered moot.
I should probably provide a bit more context. Zaebasha Epsilon is a relatively inconsequential Imperial world; a minor regional trade hub. Not so minor though that a significant traitor fleet didn't deem it worth a full-scale invasion. One they'd clearly been planning for a while, as the assault began with an uprising of heretofore unknown cultists hidden among the civilian population and the Planetary Defence Forces.
Interestingly, the traitor units among the PDF didn't include the garrison of the spaceport. Instead, most of that force had simply abandoned their posts and fled at the first word of the approaching enemy. Yurusenai. The fact that their retreat required them to run straight into the enemy vanguard could probably be said to be inga balancing the scales. Certainly it bought us a little more time to prepare.
The traitor fleet sent down an initial force of dropships and landers, but no more have since followed. Presumably the Imperial Navy has proven more of a challenge than the enemy anticipated and has disrupted any further landings.
Following the shattering of the command bunker, I, Captain Asakura Tomoe, as the highest ranking officer left alive on the scene, am apparently the next in line to command fifty thousand guardsmen against what must be at least half again as many traitors. Sho ga nai.
First things first: inform the junior officers of the regiments that I'm the only one left in a position to do the job and that I'm taking charge. So far it's...not going well.
"Like hell I'm going to follow the orders of some up-jumped tayuu." snarls Lieutenant Nakano, leader of a platoon from the 39th's 3rd Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Brigade.
We're standing outside the remains of the bunker. Upon my entering the adjacent courtyard, the situation was complete mayhem. With the entire command structure currently under a pile of twisted rubble, organization within the regiments had effectively devolved entirely to the platoon level. Lieutenants and sergeants either shouted orders to their men with no sense of coherent purpose, or else stood around not even pretending they had any idea what to do. Step one was to send out runners to bring as many of the nearest platoon officers here as possible to inform them of my assumption of command. An argument could be made that I risked a repeat of Tanaka's folly, but given the circumstances I chose the most expedient course of action. Meanwhile I'd directed Fuuka to round up every vox operator she could find and begin making contact with as many companies as possible.
Right now I'm surrounded on all sides by a milling crowd of troopers and junior officers from all six regiments. Immediately behind me stands the command platoon of my own onna-bushi company. In the distance the sound of explosions and the varied snaps, cracks, and bangs of assorted las, stubber, and bolter fire can be heard. We don't have time for these bureaucratic games.
"I'm the next in the chain of command, lieutenant." I say calmly, ignoring Nakano's frankly pathetic attempt at an insult. During my previous brief interactions with him he'd struck me as a disagreeable sort. That earlier verdict is currently being confirmed.
"You're not and you know it! Have you and your little band of maiko ever even been off world before?"
"Otanomoushimasu, arsehole." Shizuka mutters from off to the side. I groan internally. Being from one of Chuoko's many hanamachi districts, she'd clearly taken particular offence. This isn't helping.
"What was that, kisama busu?!"
Rather odd combination of phrasing, that. Anyway, okay, time to put a stop to this.
"Urusai! Enough! The other surviving commanders are tied up in holding the line. I am taking command of the defence. If you won't accept that, we'll refer the issue to the kenpeitai."
All Taiyoukeian eyes now turn to a clearly overwhelmed Junior Commissar Mayoi. Poor kid, I'm sure he didn't wake up this morning expecting to have to play kingmaker. His previous duties didn't extend much beyond paperwork. I think at one point I had heard something about him wanting to be a kokutai scholar, before the Schola Progenium selected him for the Commissariat.
"Well?" Nakano snapped. "What's it going to be boy?"
"I...", Mayoi stammers. Everyone in the crowd stares at him expectantly, including those from the non-Taiyoukeian regiments, whose eyes have by now followed those of my countrymen. Though the gaijin can't follow the language of the debate, the gist of the issue is obvious to all.
"Boku wa..." Mayoi stammers out again, before his expression changes and he corrects himself. Clearly he's finally stumbled on some element of inner resolve. "No, ore wa...rather, the Commissariat, will back Captain Asakura's claim, and acknowledges her temporary assumption of the authority of a Colonel. Any who continue to dispute the issue will be considered guilty of treason and subject to summary execution."
He says Colonel, but thinking about this further, wouldn't being in command of multiple regiments technically make me a Major General? Wakaranai; kinishinai.
"You can't be serious." Nakano sneers.
"Hold!" I shout as Mayoi begins to reach for his laspistol.
I turn to Nakano. "If you're seeking death, I can give you the chance at an honourable one in combat."
His eyes narrow.
"Regardless of what you may assume about onna-bushi, I have no intention of simply cowering behind the walls of the port. I intend to make a spirited defence with all the means at my disposal."
"With no chain of command left?"
"We'll piece it back together as we go. Starting with you. I'm field promoting you to Captain and placing you in command of the 3rd Company."
"Can you even do that? Self-appoint a higher rank and then give out field promotions?"
We both glance at Mayoi. He throws his hands up. "This whole situation is...unusual. The regulations aren't entirely clear given the circumstances."
I return my gaze to Nakano. I already regret this; he doesn't remotely have the temperament for company command, but I don't have the luxury of time to find someone better, and I need him on my side.
"I need officers. Do you want the job or do I find another 3rd company platoon leader?"
"...fine."
"Good. Coordinate with my chief vox operator. She's temporarily set up in the southeast storage room. Inform your company that you're taking command, then get a sitrep from all of your platoons."
Nakano, begrudgingly, I think, salutes and leaves.
I turn to the crowd. "Ai amu komando...teking...". The crowd stares blankly. Someone in the back coughs.
Kuso. I always was hopeless at speaking foreign languages. Oh, I can read Gothic fine, but my pronunciation is incomprehensible. How the language sounds in my head and how it sounds in practice bear almost no resemblance to each other. For that matter, I find how gaijin insist on speaking their language nearly as unintelligible. And of course all the official regimental translators were killed along with the rest of the staff officers.
"Kaneshiro, where's trooper Kaneshiro?", I call out to my entourage. She's the one who had always had an ear for Low Gothic, wasn't she?
A young woman, short even by Taiyoukeian standards, and with, somewhat abnormally, brown hair, steps forward.
"Here, Capt-, ah, Colonel. It's read Kanagusuku by the wa-"
"Midori, was it?" I interrupt.
"Emerald."
"...nani?"
"It's written Midori, but it's pronounced Emerald, Colonel. Eh-mi-ra-ru-do."
My brain completely stalls for a second.

"Ah, hai!"
I return my attention to the crowd, slowly turning in a complete circle as I speak.
"I am taking command of the defense. As of now my authority is that of a colonel. The Commissariat has endorsed my authority. Accept this, or you will be shot. Follow my orders, and you might survive. All enlisted men are to return to their platoons, and all platoons to their companies. All first platoon lieutenants are hereby field promoted to the rank of captain and given command of their companies. Defer command of your former platoons as you see fit. You have fifteen minutes to inform your men and to get their situation reports via vox. You are then to return to your companies, where you will organize your chains of command as best as you can in short order, with the exception of the captain of each first company. These are promoted to command of their parent regiment. We're forgoing the battalion and brigade layers entirely; there's no time to organize them. These new regiment commanders are to report back to me in twenty minutes in the- is the command tent set up yet? No, don't bother translating this part. It is? Fine. In the command tent to the west of the bunker. These orders will be transmitted to those not present immediately after this. Dismissed."
Eme...Emi? No, there are already two Emi's in the company...Midori, stumbles slightly in her translating.
"...to those not present...er...presently. Dismissed."
A few in the crowd immediately leap into action, but most stand around stunned. Some of them have just jumped multiple ranks to command of thousands of troopers. None of us have time for this.
"Hayaku shite!" I shout. "Mubu!" The crowd snaps out of its stupor and scatters.
Two minutes later we're in the improvised vox station set up inside the storage room. Natsuki has just finished repeating my orders over the vox, and I've just informed Fuuka she has to move all her equipment for the second time this morning, this time to the command tent. She is visibly displeased by this. Gomennasai, Yamagishi-san. Sho ga nai.
Now I have command. The Taiyoukeian troops clearly aren't happy about it, but will accept it for now. The gaijin regiments seem much more sanguine about the whole affair.
Step two: find out what the hell the battlefield situation is.
We're standing around a large table inside the command tent. 'We' being myself and the four other newly promoted regiment commanders, a scattering of similarly newly promoted staff officers, and Midori for translation.
The battlenet is trashed, with the entire central cogitator stack having been taken out along with the command bunker. Fortunately, someone was able to find a physical map in an untouched storeroom inside what's left of the bunker. So at least we have some sense of geography.
From what Fuuka has been able to pull from the vox however, we can forget air support or reinforcements any time soon. Every orbital asset is currently engaged with the traitor fleet, including the squadron of Taiyoukeian escorts that accompanied our transports to Zaebasha Epsilon, which have been retasked as a mobile force. Every outer system picket vessel has also been recalled, and 60% of Naval assets in nearby systems are being redirected from their existing deployments to the Zaebasha system. Our job is to hold out until they can arrive.
Based on the sitreps trickling in from the companies, the enemy is pressing hard against the outskirts to the northwest of the port. Most heavily against four companies of the Munisipice Fusiliers, who have been holding the enemy back for almost two hours. But they're light infantry, and have already sustained extreme casualties. The conventional strategy would be to relieve them with heavier troops. But then what? Merely delaying the inevitable by continuously throwing troops into the meat grinder isn't going to cut it here; we don't have the numbers or firepower for a drawn out, stand up fight. 'Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.' We need to blunt this traitor assault in a meaningful way if we're to have any hope of buying enough time for the fleet to send us reinforcements. Assuming the fleet can win its own battle, of course. Best not to think about that variable.
So, terrain: the spaceport is at the top of a mountain, which makes a kind of sense. The mountain is an extinct (or at least I hope it's extinct anyway) volcanic caldera, which makes less sense. I wonder which Mechanicus Adept signed off on building a spaceport in a hole at the top of a hill? Though I have to admit it does seem to confer substantial defensive advantages. To the south and east the edges of the caldera are nearly sheer, so little risk of assault from those directions. To the north the slope is steep, but climbable; the enemy can assault up it if they must, but it won't be ideal for them. They'll prefer the more gradual incline that the main road follows to the west. Sort of obvious, since that's what they're currently attempting to force.
Beyond the slopes, relatively flat land where the enemy is currently setting up their siege infrastructure and staging their formations. Once finished they'll be able to simply send one unit after another in until we break, while their super heavy guns demolish us from a distance and we have no ability to respond. The destruction of the command bunker was wrought by a single shell fired from just one siege gun. The accuracy of such weapons is generally poor; as mentioned earlier that was a lucky shot, or perhaps one guided by darker forces. But a battery of them wouldn't need much in the way of accuracy to hit the walls.
As I look at the map I can see the entire battle ahead, and its inevitable conclusion. Not because of some extreme military prowess or foresight on my part. But because I've seen it all before. Or, well, read about it anyway. When you're in charge of a largely ceremonial unit whose regular duties don't extend much beyond feeding and grooming oversized deer, you have a lot of downtime. The Imperium has a vast array of histories, studies, war journals, and after action reports available to its officers for study. Given how sparsely populated the libraries and cogitator terminals always seemed to be when I visited them, it seems these resources are seldom utilized. Oh well. 'Fools learn from experience; the wise learn from history', as some dead Jermani reprobate or other supposedly once said.
This exact scenario, or ones nearly like it, has played out thousands of times before, on as many worlds. On-ko-chi-shin.
Specifically my mind turns to the fate of the Cadian 879th, butchered to the last man while bravely 'holding the line' on Pytanix, holding out for a relief force that never came.
The spaceport defences cannot hold. They simply can't. Without reinforcements the walls will be breached, and the garrison slaughtered. Relief could come from the fleet above before that happens, but that possibility can't be relied on. In fact it would be utterly irresponsible to do so. 'Hope for the best, prepare for the worst', as it says in the Imperial Munitorum Manual that apparently no one but me bothers to read. If the enemy finishes their preparations and can bring up their heavy equipment, we all die.
So don't let them finish. But how to stop them? Between our slowly buckling perimeter and their staging ground must be at least what, seventy thousand traitors already in or heading for the attack. At least this vanguard seems to mostly be the more rabid and disorganized insurgent troops. They've sent the rabble in first as fodder, so we have that to our advantage.
Obviously we have no time, much less the ability, to work out a carefully calculated strategy. No elegant joint operation execution formulated OPLAN. Whatever we do it'll be clunky and unrefined.
A sudden assault right into their teeth could work, if we had enough heavy armour...which we don't. Well, what do we have? Fortunately Kaede was able to find me a complete deployment manifest, in Taiyoukeian. The most relevant bits are:

Though, I made sure to remind myself, from the above remove 130 riders, because Captain Higashi's patrol hasn't been heard from since the start of the invasion. Regrettably, he and his men are likely already dead.
Not to mention Tarantula sentry guns in both heavy bolter and lascannon variants; 500 of them all told between the various regiments.
And the wall guns, 155mm mounts...naruhodo. Oh, not in the manifest, obviously; the spaceport wasn't where any of us were to be posted. The garrison duty was assigned to one the PDF regiments who up and fled. But I'm also not blind. The wall guns are the key. The best offence is a good defence, is it?
Well, here goes. I give my first battle order: "Alert the Fusureri...Fusu... the hinawaju, to begin preparations to pull out."
"We're abandoning the front line?" asks Colonel Kest of the 767th.
"No, not the whole thing. Just the main road. Agario, order the Carnelian 2nd company up to cover the pull back. They won't be staying long; the 767th already have many wounded, and they'll need time to retreat. The second the evacuation is complete, the 2nd will also pull back. They will move to join with the Munisipice 5th, 7th, and 8th, along with the PDF garrison units that didn't flee, as well as the Hofun 401st's anti-tank elements, in defensive positions outside the main gate."
"You want us to abandon the high ground of the perimeter?"
"Yes."
"Will we at least have a covering artillery barrage? Smoke?"
"Not on the final pull out, no. I want the enemy to clearly see the retreat and pursue it without hesitation."
"And what's stopping them from spreading to their flanks and enveloping the rest of our line from the rear? My men will be completely exposed." Kest clearly isn't enthused by my plan.
"I'm counting on the enemy being ill-disciplined fanatics and remaining focused on the 'fleeing' enemy before them." I hope Midori can convey my tone adequately.
"And retreating helps us how, exactly?" Colonel Yamashita of the 401st interjects. Altogether a much more reasonable man than Nakano, but still clearly not pleased to be taking orders from a woman. "I know you onna-bushi love your walls, but I say we counter-attack."
"I agree. And this is how our counter-attack starts."
"Uh, does someone want to explain what's going on?" says Colonel von Henvik of the Veru 361st. What? Shit. Yamashita and I had been speaking in Taiyoukeian.
Midori, obviously unsure if she should be translating this one-on-one conversation, hadn't, leaving the gaijin colonels with nothing to do but stare blankly.
"Midor-"
"Emerald."
"Kaneshiro! If you would, please. Arigatou. The reverse slope is the perfect killing ground. If we clearly retreat we can lure a large number of the enemy quickly into range of the wall guns, which, along with the deployed units, will be able to hold them for a while."
"The wall guns are something, but the Fusiliers are light infantry. And those Type 97s of yours are of limited effectiveness."
"They'll have to do. Because we'll need our heavier units for the next stage."
"So you're knowingly condemning many of my men to die?" says Kest.
"If that's what is required, yes. If we continue as we are now we all die anyway. Now, if I may continue? Thank you. After we lure the enemy in we hit behind a portion of their vanguard with a creeping barrage of every artillery piece we can muster, in order to separate a sizable section of their assault from the rest of the body. Afterwards, the Beru 36-"
"Veru." Midori corrects me.
Help me. Is this going to be a recurring thing with her?
"Beh...lu."
"Veh-ru."
Shizukani, anata wa hidoi senohikui josei, I think with exasperation. I make sure not to say this out loud, of course. Honne and tatemae, and all that.
I resume where I had left off. "...the 361st goes in with all of its Chimeras loaded with every Tarantula turret they can carry and rapidly deploys them in the gap along the ridgeline created by the artillery."
"And what will stop the rest of their vanguard from simply swarming this newly planted turret line?"
"The fact that they'll be too busy being slaughtered by our all out assault. A third of every company holding the trenches will turn inward to reinforce the turret line and help contain the enemy there, while the remaining men will advance. They'll be joined by every trooper, vehicle, and mount we can muster, which will be massed behind the front on the extreme right."
"You want us to assault THAT?!" Agario shouts in disbelief.
"Their numbers are large, yes, but the enemy has yet to bring up their best troops. We're still mostly fighting a mob. If we hit them now we still have a chance of punching through to their landing zone and disrupting their main deployment."
"And you plan to do this with an incomplete chain of command slapped together on the fly?"
"'The obstacle is the path.'"
"Is that one of your inscrutable native sages?" sneers Kest.
"No, it's one of yours." That seems to bring him up short. "Look, this is very simple: we either succeed or we die. We have no other options. Either the men and officers rise to the challenge, or they don't."
Thinking quickly, I add.
"If it makes you feel better I can put this in 'native sage' terms: yuu-oh-mai-shin."
"...eto-"
"No, Kaneshiro, don't even bother."
"You seem awfully certain that our defences can't hold, or that the fleet won't be able to come to our aid. Some would consider that heresy." says Agario. Fuzaken janee yo? Furaku bakayarou.
"Because the defences can't hold." I say flatly, managing to restrain myself. "Objectively, they can't. It's simple arithmetic and logistics. As for the fleet, I'm in no doubt that they'll turn the tide, eventually, and send forces to relieve the planet. The issue is will we still be alive when they do. And if we aren't, not only is that bad for us, but it means the Imperium will have been deprived of a vital port, which will make resecuring the planet that much harder for the Navy and the Guard. For now, the only responsible course of action is to act on the assumption that we are our only hope."
I'm met with a wall of silence in response.
von Henvik finally speaks up. "I'll note that you seem to be putting trust in the walls and the wall guns for your plan."
"Only if we enact it soon. They'll serve against the enemy vanguard, but won't hold if they're able to bring up their main force and their heavy siege equipment. Look, we either hit them first, and hard, or they grind us into dust. And if we don't hit them soon, we won't have the weight to break through their reinforced mass." Tamerai taiteki.
Finally, Kest sighs. "Agreed."
I eye the others. One by one they assent.
"And one more thing." I add. "Agario: don't you ever question my loyalty to the Kohi again. Dismissed."
After they leave I turn to Tamako. "Alert the company to begin preparations to move out."
"Taisa?"
"It's all hands on deck for this one. If we depart soon we'll likely be able to join the fight just behind the first wave of armour. Fuuka you're the only one staying, to relay as clear a picture of events over the vox as you can."
"Understood." She's clearly not happy about being left behind.
Agario isn't wrong. It is too complex a plan, with too many moving parts and variables. Too many obvious points of potential failure. It's the type of thing you would normally only attempt with regiments that have had weeks or months to practice together beforehand. But there's no time for any of that. We go now, or not at all. So we went.
The first part of the plan, the feigned retreat, essentially went off without a hitch. The enemy also obligingly took the bait. The decapitating artillery barrage also, more or less, worked. It wasn't the most coherent affair; not every gun fired in reasonable unison, but it got the job done. It was when it came time for the turret deployment that things started to go wrong. Fully fifty of the Chimeras were lost when they misjudged the timing of the conclusion of the barrage and drove right into a not yet fully concluded bombardment. But the remainder made it through, dodging the wreckage of the first wave of APCs to deploy their turrets amid the dust kicked up by the assault and the newly smoking wreckage. If anything, the smoke added to their concealment, I suppose.
With the enemy vanguard at least temporarily neutralized, there was only one real step left. By this point the entire company was on the move, pausing just long enough that I could relay via Natsuki's bulky backpack vox unit back to Fuuka for transmission to the entire field.
"Imperial assault force: attack like lightning!"
The vox reports gave a grim impression of events after that, though it was only much later that I would learn from the detailed AAR just how fraked parts of the attack had gone. Some companies advanced too soon and were torn to shreds. Others missed the launch signal and went too late, attempting to cross the field without support on their flanks. Some never got out of their trenches at all. A company of the Hofun's assault vehicles quickly got bogged down in an armour duel and were effectively removed from the greater fight. But enough advanced that it worked. The enemy second tier elements, suddenly deprived of their vanguard, hadn't been expecting to directly engage in combat so suddenly, especially not from their flank.
The 223rd Carnelian in particular made a frankly glorious account of themselves. Leman Russ tanks aren't super heavy armour; they generally aren't expected to lead this kind of charge entirely by themselves, at least not when there are so few of them. But that day they did. They punched a hole right through the enemy mass, though it cost them dearly; as we advanced behind their spear tip we traveled through a wasteland of burnt out wreckage and corpses, a twisted mix of both traitor and Imperial. The field was a nightmare. Unit cohesion broke down quickly in the chaos of battle, especially as the battalion and brigade organizational layers were entirely absent. We had an advantage in that the enemies coordination, likely never having had much coherence to begin with, degraded even more as they came under unexpected assault.
After the initial breakthrough, there were no detailed objectives. My orders for after the charge had been extremely basic and straightforward: advance on the enemy landing zones, with the principle objective being to eliminate the enemy siege guns. Either by smashing the control mechanisms, spiking the barrels, or simply igniting as much of the ammo stores as possible. Beyond that, soldiers were free to destroy anything they could find. Green smoke signals were to be fired upon destruction of something important, at the discretion of individual unit commanders.
As we approach the main enemy landing zone, I disburse my company as platoons, with instructions to spread as much damage as possible. I keep 4th platoon and the command squad with me, and begin hunting for the enemy command post. It isn't particularly hard to find; the huge blood soaked banner hanging from a giant humanoid shaped skeleton made of assorted human and animal bones attached to the roof of a rusting, crudely assembled modular structure is something of a clue. The relative skill and quality of equipment of the guards outside is another.
It's an even enough fight, at first. Until from out of the smoke a hulking giant with a goat's head emerges. I let out a heavy, resigned sigh.
"Subarashi. They have a beastman."
"Ajin-tachi." Yuko corrects me, as two more giants emerge, flanking the first. It's clear at a glance that we're on our own, the other onna-bushi squads, as well as several other Imperial units whose neighboring combats have begun to spill over into our area, all being fully occupied with cultists and traitor guard. The rest of the squad can sense what is coming and is already spreading out in formation.
"Right." I say, extending my naginata in a kuridashi anti-cavalry stance. Given the size of the enemies, it seems the most appropriate style. Training never covered this kind of scenario specifically.
"Let's get to it. Meirei shotai: totsugeki!"
It went about as well as could be expected, I suppose. Three dead: Natsuki, Yuko, and Tomoyo. Four more injured, two critically; Erika losing an arm. I got off with just losing an eye and receiving a diagonal scar across my face. In exchange all three beastman were killed, which actually doesn't seem that bad a ratio, all things considered.
After taking the slash to the face I blacked out for a while. Feeling like your entire head has been split in half can do that to you.
After we, well, my squad, had dispatched his trio of beastmen, the enemy commander himself had come out, accompanied by a further two of the hulking monsters, intending to finish off the now crippled Imperial unit. At that point Yanikawa Airi and what was left of her 3rd squad arrived, backed up a handful of troopers from the Veru 361st. There was some dispute about who actually landed the killing blow on the enemy leader, but Airi and Haneko eventually agreed to share credit. I missed the whole thing.
Eventually I regained consciousness to find a medic standing over me, with what appeared to be the remainder of my command company nearby. There seemed to be a lot fewer of them than just a few hours ago. Just off to the left a pair of Chimera APCs were unleashing furious suppression fire at a target I couldn't make out. Once I'd regained my bearings enough I was able to start comprehending the reports being made to me.
"Ushinawa reta mono ka?" I ask.
"No way to tell, but they must be heavy. Units are scattered everywhere, and most we've been able to contact have been badly mauled. Vox is a mess, but we've been receiving a steady stream of units claiming successful destruction of vital targets."
Smoke signals too, as more and more green plumes filled the sky.
The enemy commander was dead, and the super heavy guns were either mostly or maybe even entirely out of commission, with a great deal of other damage to the enemy infrastructure besides. Mission successful; the spaceport was safe.
But as for us...the enemy was in complete disarray, but our forces were shredded, and we were in the heart of the enemy camp. Eventually the foe would recover and begin to piece itself back together. We'd punched a hole straight through the enemy mob, but it had been in service of a mad dash to the enemy landing fields. Most of the enemy forces were still intact and in the field. There were klicks between us and the walls of the port, and I was in no condition to be commanding anything.
It's a good thing then, that as I was giving the order to dispatch couriers to begin rallying units that couldn't be recalled via vox, Captain Higashi chose that moment to arrive on the scene. Later I would learn the full story, that his training patrol had escaped the initial enemy assault, and that they'd been creeping around the edges of the enemy host, picking off stragglers while waiting for a chance to inflict some real damage. Unusually circumspect for someone who tries to maintain some form of bastardised hageboku ideals; usually they're overeager to throw their lives away in some glorious affirmation of their 'honour'.
Seeing the enemy camp burning around us, he didn't bother to dispute my claim to leadership, though he offered his services in commanding the withdrawal, an offer I took him up on, being in no condition to do it myself. All in all he managed the task admirably, getting the remainder of the Imperial force back to the safety of the walls, picking up scattered units along the way, with only another 10% or so losses.
Once inside there was little more the enemy could do to us. Without their siege equipment the walls and guns were effectively immune to any assault they could muster. It would be another week before the Imperial fleet finally gained the upper hand in orbit and a relief force was landed.
The final tally was brutal. Across all of the forces involved in the attack there had been 46% total casualties, dead and wounded combined. The 401st took the worst of it, suffering nearly 70% losses. That was it for them then. Completely combat ineffective until massively replenished, but with that much of the core of the Regiment destroyed the normal course of action would be for the Munitorum to simply disband the formation.
It would take command a while to sort out what had happened, but once they did, and after the ceremony to remember the many dead, among them Colonel von Henvik and Captain Nakano, what was left of the regiments were loaded onto transports. I don't know what the fate of the three gaijin regiments will be, but it's been made clear to me that the 39th, 401st, and 62nd are to return to the Taiyoukei system to be merged into a reformed and expanded regiment, under my command. Butcher a few tens of thousands of men, and they reward you for it. I've been given carte blanche to choose personnel and equipment, within reason. I'll at least be making Higashi my second in command.
But that's in the future. Right now I need to focus on figuring out my way around this new bionic eye. And a stiff drink.

My stepdaughter Becca (14F) died 4 weeks ago. I’ve been in her life since she was 7 years old, we were extremely close.
My husband Derek (40M), his ex-wife Sam (38F), and I (35F) get along very well, there has never been an issue in the 7 years that I’ve been with Derek. Sam has always been kind to me, she didn’t even care that Becca called me “mom” too.
Right after Becca’s passing, Sam had so much anxiety and depression that she was unable to be by herself (she has no family besides us), so we invited her to stay with us.
Sam hardly leaves the house, she mostly just sleeps in Becca’s room, which is completely understandable. I always tell her that I’m here if she needs me and that I want her to take her time with grieving and that there is no pressure to go back to her home.
Today I needed to run some errands, so I asked Sam if she’d like to join me to get out of the house a little bit, but she declined and said she’d rather just stay at the house and sleep. I told Derek that I was leaving and that I would be back in 2ish hours (he works from home), I also told him to check on Sam every once in awhile, and maybe try getting her to eat something.
After stopping at the post office, I realized I forgot my library book that I needed to return, so I went back home to get it.
As soon as I walked in the door, I heard moaning coming from mine and Derek’s bedroom. I immediately knew what was happening… and my heart completely broke in that moment.
I wasn’t completely sure what to do, but I ended up deciding to confront them, so I walked to the bedroom and opened the door and began yelling at them both. Sam started having an anxiety attack and ran to the bathroom while Derek kept apologizing profusely.
I asked him what the hell was happening, he told me that he made himself and Sam some lunch and they began talking about Becca, and shared some memories. And then Sam ended up kissing him and he didn’t pull back, and then it ended with them in our bed.
They’re begging me to understand that it was just grief that caused them to become intimate and that they both made a mistake.
I don’t know what to do. I love this man. And I love Sam. I’m heartbroken that they did this to me and put me in this position. I feel so stuck.

OOP: Yes, I am in therapy. I’ve been with my therapist for other things for the last 3 years. She’s been very helpful. I saw her yesterday and was able to figure some things out.

 
Update #1: May 11, 2024
I decided that I’m filing for a divorce. I can’t ever trust Derek again. It sucks because we had an amazing relationship (I thought), he’s always been great, so this was a complete shock to me.
Last night, Derek came over to talk. He confessed to a lot. Turns out it wasn’t their first time having sex like most people thought. They’ve been having sex since 3 months before Becca died. I am completely shocked and heartbroken.
Sam also reached out last night and thanked me for everything I’ve done for her, and told me she was sorry. I didn’t respond, I blocked her.
I did so much for Sam and considered her a friend so this hurts a lot, more than I can handle.
This is all too much.
As hard as this is gonna be, I need to leave Derek and cut them both out of my life. I am ready to do so. I am done.
Also, some people are saying I deserved this because I should have known better than to let Sam into our home, around Derek. But, you need to understand that I’m a giving person, I trust people more than I should, I truly thought Sam was an amazing person. I know it’s unusual to become friends with your husband’s ex wife, but it’s just how it went for us and I shouldn’t be blamed for what happened.

Those two are going to be in a world of hurt, once the guilt settles in. They're going to be asking themselves why it had to be Becca and will eventually come to conclusion that it's their punishment for what they've done to you. I can pretty much guarantee you that.

OOP: He told me that they just “accidentally” reconnected one night when I was away at my mom’s. He was stressed we weren’t conceiving and were having miscarriages, so he vented to Sam, and then somehow that led to sex.
It seems so icky to me… How can he vent about our struggles like that and then go and have sex with Sam, it’s just awful of him. I don’t understand it.

I’m getting lots of questions about some things so I figured I’d answer a few of them.
• Have I told anyone about what happened besides my mom? — Yes, I told a few friends and some family members. Most of them are supportive of my decision and aren’t speaking to Derek.
• Where is Derek staying? — Currently, he’s staying at a hotel. Our friends refuse to let him stay with them. He’s lost a lot of people due to his awful decisions.
• Has he tried fighting me on getting a divorce? — Yes, he begged me not to file for divorce, but when I told him I needed him to just let me go, and that I was too exhausted to fight him on this, he let it be and agreed to getting a divorce.
• Why isn’t Derek staying with Sam? — He told me he didn’t wanna continue to hurt me, so he told Sam he was done with her for good. And that they have no reason to speak to each other anymore. I have no idea if that’ll last and if they’ll just end up together, but I truly don’t care what they do anymore. I just want peace.

OOP: I get along with Derek’s mom very well, but he’s also a mama’s boy so it’s kinda complicated. She will always be there for him (he’d stay with her if she didn’t live across the country). She knows what he did and told me she “had a talk” with him but said that he’s still her son and she’d help him with anything if he needed it. I’m thinking I need to cut her out of my life too which makes me really sad because we were close and talked on the phone almost daily.

More updates - May 14, 2024
I just found out that he is staying with Sam and not at the hotel. He told me it’s too expensive to stay at a hotel and Sam is the only one that’ll help him right now.
I had a feeling this would happen. Just knowing that they are still probably sleeping together hurts my heart. I talked to a lawyer this morning and we are proceeding with the divorce and Derek agreed to it. It’s actually happening, and I feel some relief that he’s not fighting me on this.
My mom leaves on Sunday, I’m scared to be alone… But I go back to work on Monday so I’m hoping it’ll be a good distraction.

Just a little update: May 19, 2024
I figured it’s been a few days, so I should give a little update.
My mom is leaving in a couple hours so I’ll be alone, I’m kinda nervous about it. She helped me stay distracted and kept me going, idk how I’m gonna handle her being gone.
I go back to work tomorrow, first day back since Becca passed away. I’m looking forward to it though because it’ll keep me distracted.
Also, I did read some of Becca’s diary. It made me love her even more, she was such a sweetheart. I went back a few months and saw that she noticed some weird behavior between Derek and Sam, didn’t mention that she knew of the affair, but she just wrote that she thought it was kinda strange that they all three would hangout more than usual, without me.
I might read more, but so far I haven’t found anything that’s disturbing, just her being a teenager and talking about crushes, fights with friends, happy family memories, etc ❤️
Tomorrow I’m also talking to my lawyer so I might have more updates on that.

Started randomly getting a lot more messages/comments so I figured I’d do another little last update.
My first week back at work went great! I wasn’t expecting it to go so well, but thankfully it did. My coworkers were so helpful and patient with me.
On Friday night I decided I didn’t want to stay home all weekend alone, so I decided to drive up to my mom’s, it helps I have a 3 day weekend so I can spend more time with her. I’m heading back home tomorrow.
Also, for those of you that have messaged me hateful things for reading Becca’s diary, I just have to say - you aren’t in my shoes right now, telling me I’m a bad mom because I’m reading her diary is just ridiculous. I learned so much more about her, about how caring and sweet she is, and it made me love her even more. It’s how I’m able to feel so close to her right now, so please don’t tell me I’m a bad parent for just trying to get by one of the hardest times of my life. You have no idea what it’s like.
I don’t have much of an update, so this will be it. I’ll come back and update once the divorce happens though! Thank you to those of you that have been nothing but kind and helpful, you helped me feel less alone, I’ll forever be grateful!

I ( F,28) have been in a relationship with my fiancé , Tyler (M, 42) for the last 4 years. He has 2 kids from previous marriage (Kids are 8.5 year old boy and 11 year old girl). His wife passed way when his youngest was 1 year old. He met me 3 years later. His kids are wonderful and lovely and we get along great. We live together. I do everything for them since Tyler works long hours. They call me mom but they are aware who their real mom is. We have her pictures in their rooms , and Tyler talks about her to them all the time.
We are planning our wedding. My father offered his condo in Hawaii to us so we can enjoy our honeymoon there. It was a very kind and generous offer. When I told Tyler he was so grateful. Then he said “I bet kids will have a blast”. I looked at him in disbelief and said “kids?! “He said yes! I said that’s our honeymoon! I don’t wanna be a mom on my honeymoon. We can go on plenty of family trips later but this is our honeymoon! He said “I was honest with you from day one! I told you I’m a package deal! You can’t just choose me not my kids”. I told him I understand but can they stay with your mom for one week? Just for our honeymoon. He got very frustrated and said he couldn’t believe how insensitive and selfish I was being. AITAH to expect to have a child free honeymoon?

1 - I was in to him. I pursued him. I thought he was younger. He told me about his real age, his kids, his late wife from the first moment. He even said he would understand if I say no. I loved him. I loved how honest, kind caring he was.
2 - do I feel loved after giving him bj? Yes I do. He has higher sex drive. So I just give him oral when he wants sex. Yes he kisses me everytime afterwards. He cuddles until we go to sleep. I take care of myself later (mostly during my morning showers). No!! He never pulled his gun at me! He is not a violent man. SweetSerenityxx: RUN! It is one thing to neglect your kids and another to not realize that every environment is not appropriate for children to be involved. You will have further issues down the road regarding this, especially if you ever decide to have children with this man. He won't even hear you out and you should be cautious about being with someone who could automatically cast you as an evil stepparent because you have boundaries.

What's wrong with him? It is NOT a family vacation. It's a honeymoon. Having a honeymoon does not make you the evil stepmother. It's very concerning that that's where his mind immediately went.
Honestly, this is a red flag. You need to reevaluate. It sounds like you've bent over backwards to fit into this family - which is amazing - but ... are you sure this man wants you? Not just another parent to help him raise his children? The healthiest families have independent bonds with each member, and spend time one on one. Perhaps he's overreacting and he does value you individually as well, but it's not looking good.

OOP: He is a police officer so he has longer hours. I’m a nurse so I can set my own hours. I’m responsible for anything child care related. You are right. I wonder if he really wanted to be with me or he just wanted a mom for his kids? Sigh

You should date and be in a loving romantic relationship and do couple things, travel, etc. Even if you stay, what happens to your marriage once the kids leave, or will they be. Big red flag on the overnight stuff, too. Have you discussed this? No, because you have no say!
He works long hours, but not every day and all day. What if you wanted to go visit a friend for a weekend? What if you could not take off work for a sick day? Since age of 24 you've been doing this? Are you sure he isn't banging others? I'm just saying....
I'm sorry for the kids, but honestly, this sounds like a horrible set up. Thank him for being so obvious about the honeymoon.

OOP: I’m financially independent. I pay half of the rent and expenses of course since I moved in. Rest goes to my savings . I still have student loan to pay back too. I never visited a friend for a week . He did take the kids to see their grandparents ( their mom side ) for a week across the country . If I get sick usually his mom helps with a kid. If she is not available he takes the day off to help with the kids and help me . Once the kids leave ? Gosh I hope I would having my own kids by then…

So many of you suspected that he has had vasectomy. Well, I decided to have a serious discussion with him about everything last night. He said he has never cheated on me and he never will. I asked him if he had vasectomy and ffs just tell me. He didn’t even deny it. He said yea but you gotta understand I lost my wife when my youngest was an infant. It was such a traumatic time for me. I wanted to make sure I’ll never go through it again.
I started crying! I asked him how could he lie to me all these years? He didn’t even feel bad! He said “well you never asked! You asked now and I told you! Plus what’s the big deal? I have frozen sperm in the clinic and it’s a reversible procedure”. I was floored! You saw me taking pills yet you didn’t mention? He said “well, I thought you are taking pills because you have heavy period”. I couldn’t believe this man still blames me when he was the one lying in my face! I told him how unhappy I am, how burnt out I am and he uses his work hours so he can dump the responsibilities on me and I don’t even feel loved anymore. I gave him his ring back and told him I was done. He was shocked.
At first he thought I was kidding then he saw me packing my clothes at 11 pm so he started arguing that I should just wait a little longer so by December he will know about his job. After that we will go to a fertility clinic and “you will have your stupid baby”. Then he started guilt tripping me. Saying stuff like his kids have already been traumatized once how could I be so selfish and leave them. I didn’t even bother answering.
I left for my parent’s place. He has been begging and saying he will change, he will be more involved, and asking me to come back (“you are their mom! Come back! We miss you “)🙄. I’m mentally exhausted. I can’t believe I have been so stupid. I’m gonna start finding a place for myself near my work. Thank you.

My ex told lies to his kids about our break up - May 19, 2024
I left my ex because he was lying to me and treating me like garbage as I mentioned in another post.
We were together for 4 years and i did everything for his two kids (their bio mom passed away 7 years ago). I went back to pack my stuff and his daughter said her dad told her that I left because I couldn’t stand them anymore and he chose them over me. I was floored.
I asked my ex and he (in front of the kids) said that he was just telling them the truth. He said you wanted a baby because my kids were too much for you, you hated my kids, remember you even wanted to exclude them from our trip (he meant honeymoon!!)

Terry Deitz 1.0 (Panama, 3/16)
Terry Deitz has one of the best deconstructions of a character on Survivor, full stop. I think people tend to think of me as crazy for having Terry in my top 5 of all time, but he checks so many boxes for characters that I tend to find great, and I find him to be transcendent. First is that he by all means should be the underdog of the season, and he is… but not without being described as both God and Satan in the same breath as a Casaya member. He represents the role of leadership so strongly in the season as well, which is a prevailing theme that exists throughout. So many principles are represented in his character too, like groupthink, the wearing down of someone, the effects of being a pariah, and his emotions boiling over. I am so glad that Terry was able to get this high in the rankdown, and I want to shout out to my rankers for letting me get away with murder in this situation.
I firmly believe that Terry is an endgame level, though, and while I do think that is a rather hard sell for some people, I hope I can describe why I feel so strongly about this in the following write-up. So where to start? We’ll look at Terry broadly with his relationships, both with La Mina and Casaya. Something underrated with Terry is that he talks to almost everyone on the season, sans Tina, BobDawg, and Melinda, and with each person, we understand how deep their relationships are. I’ve talked about La Mina a lot this rankdown, but I just want to summarize them again in the following paragraphs so I can have them for y’all to quickly reference, and angle it more from Terry’s POV. What I have been neglecting however is Terry’s relationships with those in Gitanos, and how one by one, they knock down his spirit but he refuses to give up throughout the game. Casaya knows Terry’s strength, and at this point, he becomes the ultimate adversary. He gets sucked so beautifully in Casaya’s conflict in the season, and I think it is a great message on negativity and the cloud it can spread and the fear of first perceptions. Ultimately, Terry meets and exceeds several of the themes that I’ve talked about Panama throughout this rankdown, with his leadership, and the ever-prevailing age and gender themes. Within each relationship, I hope to explain his relationship in the context of that, along with the deconstruction of his underdog status. So let’s get this write-up on the road, shall we?
Part I: Terry & La Mina
Terry’s role in La Mina was quickly defined, even from his early days when the tribe was originally the older men - he knew that he was the strongest person in the tribe, and immediately put his head in the game. We quickly see his work ethic showcased to the other members, and Terry quickly gets complimented for how he is playing the game. He quickly comments on his pride in the Air Force, and that established relationship with the United States quickly sees him as a trusted leader of the tribe, and he gets legitimacy quickly. Quickly, the impact of Terry and his strong work ethic becomes necessary for those in La Mina. He’s the most active member of the tribe, they completely disintegrate whenever he disappears, and he becomes a God in the eyes of the tribe, specifically Austin and Nick, through his manners in the game, how well of a leader he is, and his gameplay.
But, of course, there’s a minor issue - La Mina keeps getting destroyed by a physically weaker tribe, who undeniably have more chaotic tribe dynamics. Why? Well… you know where I am going with this - the concept of Age and Gender plays a dramatic role in the downfall of La Mina because of the strict lines on the tribe that Terry created. Terry, while putting on the aura of having the ability to lead the tribe, is ultimately the one screwing it up. Further, with his tribe, the consequences of having a groupthink mantra take over the tribe, leading to a false perception of strength. Terry’s strong leadership is ultimately the downfall of the tribe, and the contradiction is fascinating. Let’s deep dive into those themes though, shall we?
Part I.I: Age and Gender on La Mina
A classic theme that I have hope that I portrayed in this rankdown was how even though age and gender at first seemed like a frivolous manner of the season, the consequences of putting the teams in that theming for even just one vote had impacts on the season that rifled through. Often, I complain about theming on Survivor as being negative, when they are made-up titles (see HHH or my several 100 cuts on DvG). The made-up ones seem like they are performing to that title, rather than letting themselves flourish from the natural ones that society, fortunately or not, grants to people. Age and gender perception are two necessities that allow people to form heuristics in society and are integral for managing society. This unfortunately can turn into stereotypes, which is something we can often see on Survivor, but notably on La Mina.
Almost immediately with the newly tribe-swapped La Mina, we see Terry thinking in the original tribal lines of the season. Instead of acting with the women, he immediately turns on them and creates his all-guys alliance, which consists of the astronaut, John Grisham, and the machete swinger. The strong men of the tribe come together, and in a sense create a patriarchial society within La Mina, almost instantly. We see this become evident when they take control of the camp with the basic attempts of survival, whether it is Nick and Austin becoming the lead hunters, Sally losing her spear almost immediately going into the episode, or Dan being seen as the wise sort on the tribe where people feel they can entrust information.
Ultimately, the men in the tribe lead, which leads to discomfort from the women. It can come across as really subtle, but this is a special reason why I love Sally so much. She pushes that narrative across because we know that she doesn’t get along with really anyone in their tribe, besides Misty, and she was ousted almost immediately. Largely, it is due to Terry’s initial organization of the tribe, and the groupthink that surrounded it, that left Sally on the outs. However, there are two examples that most highlight Terry’s desires for the all-men alliance to stick together: Misty and RuMa
Part I.I.I: Misty
Misty is immediately deemed as a target, due to her promiscuous nature on the tribe. However, it’s not Austin, not Nick, not Sally, not Dan that wants her out - it’s Terry. Terry was so worried about the threat of women dominating and taking over the alliance that he took over at this point. This is the first real negative but also positive trait that we learn about Terry - he is determined to be right, determined to be in charge, and determined to be the leader of the tribe, at any cost. Misty is the first domino of Terry in this game, and how old-school he is playing with him desiring to keep a strong alliance of four to the end, one that includes strength.
The representation of Misty, arguably one of the most overt flirtatious people to play the game, and the contradiction to Terry’s more controlling and conservative nature is why I will always appreciate her character, even if I have her 16/16 for the cast. Misty showed strength by surviving exile, was a threat to the alliance with the potential of having the idol (which Terry had that point), but was more importantly deemed as dangerous for being a woman, and someone who could potentially break Terry’s ego and leadership style due to her unorthodox style of play.
Part I.I.II: Ruth Marie
At first glance, I think there are some stark differences between Misty and Ruth-Marie and their eliminations on La Mina, and how they were fodder for the team. However, deep down, they were both voted for the same reason - women in the tribe who were deemed as weaker. The connection of the tribe and their desire for tribe strength became a full force for Ruth-Marie and her vote out. What’ 's more important here however is the dichotomy between Ruth Marie and her age, versus Terry and Dan staying around for longer. Terry and Dan are the old geezers of the tribe, with Dan being actively older, weaker, and more awkward in challenges (he is tall). But, the men stick together, and Ruth-Marie is an obvious boot for the tribe. Sally instigates most of this with her begging to stay, and Terry can’t deny that factor. The funny contradiction about Ruth-Marie, however, and something I pointed out in my original writeup, is that she was probably much more athletic than Sally (see the first challenge where she outsprinted some of the other women) and it was likely due to the initial perception of the tribe, and the condensing of groupthink that existed on La Mina.
Ultimately, Ruth-Marie represents the next domino to fall on the tribe and Terry - loyalty or tribe strength. Yes, Ruth-Marie was never included in their vote, but something that she was playing was the firm vote for the men on the tribe, due to her close connection to Dan on the tribe, and how they were getting along. I think there are several reasons why Terry wanted to get Ruth-Marie out, whether it be to separate the duo of Dan and Ruth Marie to prevent a flip or the deep desire to win a challenge to get morale out, and seeing Ruth Marie. Whatever the reason, Terry was the instigator of the vote. Everyone was set on Sally, but then he pushed the spotlight onto Ruth-Marie and she was ousted. And the other important thing about them? Terry, at RuMa’s tribal, was seen as the hero, and that was one of the most evident examples of praise toward Terry because he was being showered with it, both from Jeff and La Mina.
Ultimately, with both RuMa and Misty, Terry opted to go for the men and chose to eliminate those different from him. It seems more basic than that when at first glance, but understanding the context of Terry - someone who needs to have control, as someone who was a leader of troops in the Air Force, he needed to eliminate those that could fall out of line, or cause defection.
Part I.II: Groupthink
For me, the most interesting aspect of Panama is the formation of the tribes, and how groups are selected with one another. I think the schoolyard pick in this season is one of the best examples of showing that phenomenon in Survivor. With Casaya, we immediately get their MO - they are just picking based completely on first perceptions, but with completely random criteria - Cirie seems like a mom, Boston tattoo, the free-spirited girl, etc., etc. They were selected more on the potential for archetypes. La Mina though? Ever notice something about them? The tribe was completely white. Besides going into formation with Terry’s beliefs and perhaps assumptions of people falling out of line, the picking La Mina showcases where they go wrong - they were picking people similar to each other, and more importantly, those who wouldn’t feel the need to dissent.
How humans pick groups by their own vices is probably one of the most interesting things about social psychology is one of the most interesting ideas for me, and I love how it transitions La Mina from a tribe that dominates, to one that has to face the consequences of what they need and understand the importance of conflict for the tribe. Ultimately, La Mina very deservingly gets credit for being a lackluster tribe due to the lack of conflict, but it is integral to their stories and the story of Panama because no dissent means the spiraling effect of the tribe, and how the survival aspect of the game almost takes over and effectively ruins and hampers their game. No one could speak up and it led to the toilet.
But the important thing about groupthink is contextualized with Terry and his desire to keep control. Terry doesn’t realize the groupthink because it is his thought that is getting pushed through with the tribe. He is always right, he is deemed as right, and he knows that the tribe would fail without him. Three characters properly showcase his efforts of groupthink, and unsurprisingly, they are the men of the tribe. Dan, Nick, and Austin showcase the failures of his groupthink, and how they are all in line with Terry, whether it benefits the tribe or not.
Part I.II.I: Dan
One of the most fascinating aspects of Terry’s character is his friendship with Dan on the island. The two immediately get along due to sharing one common trait - they’ve been in the sky before! The dichotomy of Dan and Terry is really interesting because one person is more about life wisdom, while the other is about tribal strength. Further, Terry has the more dominant personality (I hate that I am saying this, but I guess “alpha” personality) in comparison to Dan, which makes him seem much weaker than the others, especially in challenges. Dan is a pretty bad challenge performer, even in puzzles, and it becomes notable. But, Terry continues to keep Dan around, even though he is notably weaker. This is to keep the alliance alive to have a semblance among the men and to show he is not wavering or thinking about his game anymore.
But it catches up to Dan, and it leads to the third domino in Terry’s story - the loss of an actual friend. I have gushed so far about how much I love Dan’s elimination episode, but I think the heartbreaking part about it is truly Terry’s decision to jump ship and vote out his closest ally. Sally, one of the luckiest Survivor players in the history of the show, is sent to Exile, and by that point, there are no options, and a solemn decision has to be made. And Terry isn’t fucking around either, not even offering to vote with Dan in a vote of solidarity to make it go to fire. Ultimately, Dan did lose that challenge for the tribe today, and I think at this point we can see his dissatisfaction with Dan finally come to the front. Merge has no signs of coming soon, and Terry’s main priority is tribal strength. Dan’s blinding faith and loyalty lead to his downfall, and Terry’s attitude toward the game dominates at this point.
Of course, hindsight is 20/20, and Terry never knew that merge was coming the next day, but I think everyone was assuming it at some point, which is why I especially always found his decision to not even let it up to a fire-making challenge to be so harsh and cutthroat. Ultimately, Terry did preach a loyal game, and we saw him make the tighter connections with Dan, but tribe strength and youth, or at least the perception of it, came into play further.
Part I.II.II: Nick & Austin
And, speaking of youth and perception, it’s time to talk about Nick “follow your dreams” Stanbury and John Grisham. Their dynamic most pointed to a groupthink ideal because they were Terry’s lapdogs following the Misty vote. I can’t emphasize enough how important Misty’s vote for La Mina was for Terry because it finally got Austin and Nick completely on his side for the all-men alliance.
Both men serve similar roles in Terry’s story, basically acting as Terry’s children. Terry acting as a parental figure is one of the most interesting things about his premerge because it is one of the leading ways he can get people on their side. Terry’s strength is being able to survive in the wilderness, with almost no effort at all, and making it seem easy at points. Terry’s eager “children” Austin and Nick follow behind him in that effort, and attempt to act like him, even when he is away from camp. Their relationship reminds me of a kid getting up early to get dressed with their dad and trying to put on their necktie and tie it the same way.
Now granted, I am not trying to infantilize Austin and Nick because I think they were grown men out there and had their abilities to survive, but it is hard to ignore when they were just so starstruck with Terry and his amazing abilities to survive in the wild. But I think it is further reinforced when they flop so much considering the bean fiasco where they shit their brains out, as well as Nick letting the spear disappear and his clear mishandling of the machete, or Austin and his terrible gameplay following the merge. These are people who clearly needed to be online, and I always found that whenever they weren’t attached to the hip with Terry, they began to deviate from the norms and make failures. Terry was a needed Survivor figure for them, almost acting as their father who he fished with, and the leadership that he displayed for both men on the tribe was integral in keeping them alive, both physically and in the game of Survivor.
La Mina is the perfect representation of groupthink on Survivor, and one of the most perfect representations in general. A clear enemy was created, both within the tribe (Misty, RuMa) and the opposing external threats of Casaya. The group followed a leader, rarely met any sort of dissension, and were ready to fall in line with Terry. The entire context of this given the many roles that Terry was playing in the season. The father, the veteran, is the underdog after the disintegration of the tribe. Much of La Mina is necessary in setting up the fact that Terry is a leader, but he has his failures with the tribe, and he cannot even recognize them. They rally around the preconceptions they had when choosing the group, and it leads to hit after hit after hit.
Why La Mina is such a trainwreck tribe is clearly one question that I find to be fun to answer on Survivor. They are a mess when on paper, they shouldn’t be. But sometimes, similarities can lead to short-sighted behavior and a lack of conversation about how the group should change. Their entitlement to being on the tribe is crazy, and I think the hope that they continue to force and maintain throughout the season is equally fascinating.
However, with Terry, another big question comes up for his character… what happens? Terry begins the game as someone who is applauded by the tribe, but then the leader loses his role with Casaya, and his charm disappears. Only one thing can explain Terry’s downfall and disintegration of the war hero - a loss of control, the age and gender politics of Casaya, and his opposing leadership to the group of Casaya.
Part II: Spiral - From Leader to Nuisance
Probably the time when Terry is the funniest is immediately following the merge. At that point, La Mina is fucked, up a creek, dead in the water. They have to find ways to wiggle into the game, and through that by the cracks on the seemingly fractured and messy Casaya. But to the surprise of everyone, from Casaya to La Mina, to the audience at home, Casaya is a brick wall. And Terry fucking tries EVERYTHING! From getting Bruce to meander over to finding out where Courtney lays, to trying to get the queen of not starting drama, Cirie, to flop over to their side. And nothing happens. Nothing. Nick, Austin, and Sally get picked off one by one, and at this point, Terry is a lone soldier. But before we get into the soldier portion I think we need to talk about three of Terry’s friends in the game, just to understand how the part of Terry being a leader to the annoying nuisance on Gitanos starts: Welcome to the show Bruce, Sally and the biggest character of the season, the God Idol.
Part II.I: God Idol
Terry’s god idol is perhaps the biggest part of his game and character and I can completely understand others’ criticism of him in the game. The threat of his idol becomes a necessary conflict starter and fear stirrer as the game starts. At this point, his having the idol is known but unknown, and the question is when he plays it, and how they flush it. The split vote hasn’t existed at this point, so the strategy is rudimentary around the idol this season, and I think it’s interesting how it is used as a way to coast.
Now I know what you all are thinking at this point - “Reg you hate advantages like that. What makes Terry different?” You would be correct to make that assessment, given my takes, hatred of the 30s, and overall perceptions and negativities about Survivor and its unsuccessful evolutions. But I can excuse Terry’s idol for several reasons. One is that it doesn’t feel like a nuisance, in the sense that Terry himself is an incredibly engaging, charismatic narrator, unlike someone like Yul. There’s a genuine fear that Terry could have the potential to win the game, and I think the concept of that is really interesting. Terry has 0 power at this point in the game, unlike Yul or Tony, and the god idol creates that tension where the possibility of Terry winning seems more and more realistic. As we switch into postmerge, Terry winning seems more like a possibility as he becomes the unmovable boulder that Casaya has to find themselves working around. It’s a natural starter of conflict, and fear that he could pass it off to someone else. The other important distinction with the idol, and something I haven’t mentioned is that Terry is a beast at challenges. He destroyed all of them and continues to hold a record for having the most in the season. The God Idol doesn’t really have a role in the season, except for whenever Deitz doesn’t have immunity, which only happens a few times. And, we have to ask ourselves what is more entertaining - Casaya eating each other while Terry is coasting by, or them voting him out ceremoniously. It’s a rare time that I think an idol enhances the story and another time when an immunity challenge beast can do it so well.
Terry should not be a natural in creating conflict, besides some of his views falling along the lines of more traditional thoughts in society, but in reality, Terry is FORCED into a position of conflict when he is put in a place where he isn’t normally - the underdog. The idol makes him become detested by the tribe as he has the opportunity to coast to the end of the game, and it leads to the nasty side of Terry coming out. It puts him in the role of the social pariah, and his rise from zero to hero involves the negativities surrounding the idol, his controlling nature puts him out of the picture and leads to the increase of discontent on the island.
Inherently, yes, the God Idol is a problematic advantage in Survivor, just due to the sheer overpowering of it in advantages and strategy, and I am very grateful that it changed in Fiji. But, I think given Panama and its strong, volatile personalities, role subversions, and desire for control in the game, the God Idol works in this situation as a looming threat that creates a potential for danger and intrigue. The mystery of it, the difficulties of working around it, and the nightmare that it creates for Casaya make it much more worth it in my eyes.
Part II.II: Sally
Sally and Terry have a relationship that I would consider one of the most underrated in Survivor. They meet all the themes that I previously mentioned from La Mina, including gender, age, and groupthink. With gender, Sally is seen as a threat but continues to be someone who can coast by due to luck or strategy, and this leads Terry to be in conflicting positions on the La Mina tribe. With age, see Misty. Both are deemed as pariahs due to them using their sexuality, but with Sally, we can tell she is uncomfortable with Misty doing that, but Terry refuses to listen to that. And lastly, with groupthink, Sally was one of the few active voices against Terry in the tribe. She constantly criticized the all-men alliance, especially because she was on the outside of the group, and was one of the few people who saw through it and recognized the inner politics of La Mina, and how they were negatively discriminatory against her.
But, how does Sally contribute to the spiral? Probably the most interesting concept about their relationship was how they reconciled after the merge occurred, due to being at the bottom almost immediately against the dominating Casaya tribe. I think they admitted that there was a father-daughter relationship between them, but something always seemed tense between the two because they both wanted each other mutually out. Sally represented the lack of tribe strength, while Terry represented the tribe's isolation. And as Terry saw, his two closest allies, Nick and Austin went out back to back. The only way to potentially save his side and get people to jump is with Sally, who could potentially pull in the two women on Casaya because we know their relationship with Shane. But, while the idol debate of whether or not Terry would be willing to give up the idol became null and void - he lets her go and attempts to rely on the social relationships he created, even if they weren’t successful.
This is important for one reason - Terry is 100% playing for himself at this point, and he always was. At that point at the merge, with his all his allies going home, why on earth would he save Sally? I think this was a cutthroat move in a lot of senses because he truly isolated himself at this point, but would have preferred himself over someone who could jump ship on him at that point in the game. Sally is the final domino for Terry, in terms of his downfall from loyalty and attempting to play a collecitivist game, to him going guns blazing and burning the camp down one by one. It’s a great moment for both of their character and while it probably does seem like a moment where false suspense is playing a role at tribal, the tensions that were already established between Terry and Sally finally take center stage, and watching him not play the idol for her game makes complete sense for him.
Part II.III: Bruce
One relationship that I think represented the true “Terry is screwed with La Mina” is with Bruce, oddly enough. Bruce is a great fantastic supporting throughout the season, but I think one of his shining moments is with Terry, and how he stiffs him following the tribal. Casaya treated Bruce like crap, more often than not, with their entitlement toward him and judgment of him sitting on the sidelines, and Terry really thought he had an opportunity with Bruce, especially due to their previous connection on the 3-day tribe with La Mina earlier on in the game.
Even though we understand Bruce and flipping could be a possible proposition, I think there is one key difference between the two men - how they value the themes of the season, and the “nurture” of their previous tribe, Casaya or La Mina. One thing that Casaya rarely does is outwardly discuss age or gender differences - along with race, most of their conflict is derived from a conflicting yet subtle set of differences in the tribe. Everyone more or less “gets along” (a better term might be “mutually hate”), but alliances are created without much care for gender or age differences - that comes with how they act in the tribe. With La Mina, those surface traits of age and gender affected how the tribe and each other perceived one another, and created conflict among each other. With Bruce, the original attachment of their initial tribes means nothing - he created a new home over here, and even though mutual conflict exists in so many different avenues on Casaya, ultimately he had been there longer, and the divisions of the early game are non-existent.
The dichotomy of Bruce and Terry and how they are depicted with their similarities in age represents an important mirror between the two characters and how age is perceived differently between the two groups. Bruce is considered a wildcard more often than not, due to his lack of attention on the tribe. He uses it to his advantage as seen as more a wise soldier, such as Dan on La Mina, and it allows him to skate by, even as people get more disappointed in him as time rolls by. With Terry, we understand him coming onto strong, and I think that pride differed from Bruce and officially sealed the record that he lacks comfort to work with Terry, along with fear from the wrath of Casaya.
Overall, Terry’s spiral to the villain of the season begins innocently enough. He attempts to jump ship or try to convince people to join, having no recognition of just how deep the tribal lines are. Terry perceives that his smile, charm, wit, and charisma will lead him to success when that just isn’t how Survivor works sometimes. His dissolution from being the hero, strong leader, and tireless work of La Mina, to the villainized underdog on Gitanos begins innocently enough, but it’s his overconfidence in the situation that pushes him away. The dichotomy with how it scares off Casaya but encourages La Mina creates a natural internal conflict in Terry and has to encourage him to rethink the game. Which, of course, leads him to become a Casaya, and get overwhelmed with the negativity.
INTERMISSION: Trish Deitz
Before I move on babbling about the other people Terry has involvement within Panama, I want to take a moment to give praise to Terry Deitz. So if you need a break… then take a break from reading after this! Trish Deitz was an awesome character, and her screen appearance was more influential than arguably at least 50 characters in other seasons. The main thing we learn about her is that she is clearly the brains of the operation, while Terry is the muscle. That becomes evident throughout the season as Terry constantly throws out his terrible ideas about how Casaya should jump ship to the La Minas, even though if they did they would be immediately on the bottom.
Trish was the clear motivational factor with Terry, and we can see through this that he really does care about his family, I think in the depths of negativity that exists with Gitanos, this was a nice humanizing moment. But, even more importantly, it leads to one of the best arguments in the season with Terry and Aras and is the catalyst in their relationship devolving into baseless insults. Aras wanted to see his mother, and quite frankly, Terry found that silly, I just love how stupid that argument is. I’ll talk about it a little bit more when I get to Aras, but Trish is a very necessary catalyst.
Also… he smelled like a campfire ;)
Part III: The Scrambling Continues
Terry is desperate. His La Minas are gone and he is the last person standing. His position from being the ruler of La Mina was ripped away from him and he begins to struggle with the endgame portion. He knows he has the god idol. He wields power, he threatens it, he frightens the other people. One slip-up at immunity and he is done. He needs to being securing something, anything for his endgame to even get a chance to make it to the final 2. Shane is out because he’s Casaya only. Cirie giggled when he told her his plan. Aras? No way. What does that mean for our underdog hero, then?
*Enter an argumentative and lazy Boston woman and a free-spirited bird*
Terry, Danielle, and Courtney all share an interesting triangle situation. Terry knows that if he drags them to the end, he will 100% win. They’ve been ridiculed all season for their behavior, and it has been established time and time again that they are useless in the eyes of Casaya. But, why?
Part III.I: Courtney
I never got around to Courtney’s write-up, but the brief argument is that I think she is awesome and was sad she missed the endgame. Effortlessly starting a conflict with her lack of self-awareness, flightiness, and her just crazy attitude toward Casaya, Courtney is one of the most important props of the season, and boosts Cirie, Shane, Aras, Danielle, and Bruce with just a few lines. But with Terry, I think he demonstrates an important character trait with Courtney, and one of my biggest arguments for her - she knows damn well what her character and behavior are coming off as, and definitely playing it up for the other players on the island.
Terry approaches Courtney for being his goat because no one likes her. This was after touchy subjects (what’s a poser? You, Courtney), and at this point, Courtney is on the high edge and feels completely disrespected by her tribe. But she also knows her position at this point and knows that she has to play for the goat. Even though she thinks she even has a possibility to beat Terry (which, maybe? But that’s another discussion), she eagerly takes that position with Terry after her disappointment with her fellow Casayas and how she got obliterated at Touchy Subjects.
But, everyone catches onto this and then realizes that Courtney IS a threat because she’s dead weight being dragged to the end. Watching Courtney, the person that everyone all season underestimated for her loony behavior make people worried and lead to one of the best strategic moves in the history of the show is incredible.
With Terry and Courtney, I think their blossoming alliance, and thus prompt defeat is interesting for so many reasons. Contextualizing Terry’s story, I think it’s important to note that he went for the two young women on the tribe last, and it makes sense given his position on La Mina. The way he demotes the young women as non-threatening reaffirms the gender bias in the game and emphasizes the theme I’ve been harping on all season where the gender lines existed even going past the swap of the tribe's afterword. But with Courtney, I think it’s important for her to realize her goat status, have Terry reaffirm that for her, embrace it, and then get voted out for that reason. It’s a great story because we get a lot of build-up for Courtney being the most annoying person alive with her fire dancing and singing when Bruce has rocks in his stomach. Her transition to that arc is incredible.
But with Terry, it’s one of his last nails in the coffin, as the “Casaya Get Terry the FUCK out of the game train” takes another pawn from him. He’s disintegrating, and with each approaching step to the game, he runs out of options. Quickly Terry begins falling apart, and a large reason for that is Courtney. I’ll get to that a little bit more below with Cirie and Aras specifically, but his aggravation is coming in full force, and Courtney is an integral part where Terry becomes the underdog to the asshat ruined by Casaya.
Part III.II: Danielle
At first, Terry and Danielle are almost exclusively defined through the eyes of Dani. And she hates him. Danielle is one of the best early voices for the opposition against Terry because she constantly complains about him and his behavior behind his back. She is tired of him winning all the time, his scheming constantly, and him ignoring her for the most part because he doesn’t find her useful. This culminates in an Exile Island adventure between them where, or moreso lack thereof when he sends her to Exile at the family visit. Danielle gets to spend the entire day stewing on the beach because Terry doing this to her, and it seems that he burnt another bridge.
But Danielle is smart. She knows her place in the game and also knows that she is not perceived well, like Terry. She begins to create a secret alliance with Terry and Courtney where they do the final 3 together because they are the least liked on the island. The next episode, Final Four with the group that ends on a cliffhanger, represents a new change in attitude when Aras wins reward and immunity, and sends Danielle to exile over Cirie. The decision hurts Danielle because it was her second night on the beach, and she thought that they were equals. This causes her to rethink her alliance with Cirie & Aras, and she begins to contemplate what it would mean to jump ship with Terry. He’s likely to win again, and she knows that it might possibly be a tie anyway.
Danielle was always game-forward, and she herself said that she wasn’t there to make friends. It’s why she turned on Courtney so quickly and realigned herself with Terry. She wanted the money, and Terry saw through that and knew that people didn’t like her. It was his last attempt to be in the game and align with someone he would never associate in real life due to her lack of work ethic. I actually love their little odd couple relationship because they represent mirrors for other characters in the game which they didn’t like (Misty/Shane), and I think their ability to work together, so seamlessly, is incredible work and great additions to both of the characters.
But… we know how this ends. Danielle wins the final immunity and she is forced between a rock and a hard place. Aras manipulates the hell out of her, which is great for his character, but Terry takes a more dignified approach. He leans back and lets the wind take them wherever. Terry is not a beggar, under any circumstances, and it shows at the end when he believes that Danielle will stick to her word and vote out Aras. It’s important for Terry’s character because even after the demonization of his character, he is still shown to be someone who sticks to his morals and goes with whatever the game is played. Alas, Aras is chosen to go to the end with Danielle, and at that point, his game is kaput, donezo, and no god idol to save him. His last piece, being an archetype that he underestimated all season, the young female, being his final death knell is delicious irony, and the process of watching Terry go from the primary leader of the tribe surrounded by men to being scorned by something he was scared of most was beautiful, and a satisfying end to his character.
Part IV: Someone Call the Whambulance…
So the issue with Terry, is that his character is being ruined by the people around him, which I think is unarguably the most fascinating part about his character. The Terry we begin to love and know at the beginning of the season, the Air Force veteran with a loving family and great leadership skills, is disintegrating around him as he is pushed aside due to the perceptions, both that he created and that are formed through Casaya. Terry becomes incredibly shady as time goes on, and with a tribe that already views him as the primary enemy of the other tribe, it’s incredible to watch his underdog fall from grace.
Implicitly, I think everyone is so scared of Terry that they begin to take it out negatively on him, dunking on his character constantly. I love Terry’s edit because I think the complexities in the tone of his character craft a stronger character whereas a traditional Golden Boy edit gets completely subverted and blown up by the final 3 episodes. He was a beloved figure in his previous tribe who just became a nuisance and menace, and in Terry’s real life, he’s never had to be in the bottom position. His underdog role is certainly meant for us to root for him, but there’s enough narrative there where it becomes evident that while Terry is objectively in a rootable position, there’s no reason for us to do so.
Terry’s witch hunt becomes one of the most important parts of the season and defines why his character lands so much for me. Two characters excellently show this, Cirie and Aras. Both of them are relentless in their efforts to get Deitz out of the game, never wavering from their alliance with each other, and constantly slamming Terry for idoling his way to the end of the game.

The Jocks arrived. "And to be clear, he means us, not you two," Usain reminded them.
"So back to the line," Lightning said.
World Interview: Jocks
"I have to say," Usain told the camera, "those Ice Dancers really want to shake off their two-time bronze streak this quickly."
Interview Ends
Lightning mashed the button to the Don Box and took the tip. "Take the train to Calanque de Maubois on the Mediterranean coast and search the station for your next travel tip."
"Teams must take the train south to Calanque de Maubois," Don narrated as the map showed the tower turning yellow, and a red line moved south to an umbrella at the Mediterranean coast. The umbrella turned yellow when the line arrived.
"Calanque de Maubois skirts the Mediterranean on the south of France with sand so fine, you want it to get in your shorts," Don smiled. "The red cliffs are just one of the many sights that make this a popular tourist site."
"Did I mention that the beaches are awesome?" the host asked as the scene flashed to him on a beach. "Because they are." A crab grabbed his speedo and let it go, making him yelp.
The Extreme Girls, Ice Dancers, Party Dudes, and Police Cadets got their tips, with Geoff shouting "Go!"
The four teams ran off, and the camera panned to show the Pranksters mash the button to the Don Box. Val went to grab the tip, but a mime grabbed it. "Give me back my tip!" Val shouted and chased after the mime.
Junior soon walked over to Windsor and smiled. "Hey," he said. "I'm Dwayne Jr., but you can just call me Junior."
"Hi," Windsor said back. "I'm Windsor."
Windsor reached her hand out, and Junior did so too. Before they could do a handshake, Dwayne suddenly beat Junior to it.
"Nice to meet ya," Dwayne said to the young girl. "Dwayne Sr. I see you've already met Junior. This kid," he rubbed his son's head. "What a great little guy!"
"Dad!" Junior hissed.
"I mean he acts up sometimes," Dwayne continued, "but that happens as kids are near puberty."
"I did not need to know that," Windsor muttered.
"Come on, Windsor!" Val said with the tip in her hand.
"Coming," Windsor cried out. "It was great meeting you two, but I have to stick with my partner." She fist-bumped Junior and ran away.
As Dwayne waved goodbye to the Pranksters, Junior groaned and walked away.
World Interview: Father & Son
"My dad always finds a way to embarrass me," Junior told the camera.
Dwayne chuckled. "Come on. That's not true, son. You're just being self-conscious. Oh, before I forget, I washed your lucky undies," he told the boy while showing off his son's underwear.
"Aw, dad!" Junior scolded.
World Interview: Pranksters
"Junior is pretty cool, but there's no chance of a relationship happening between us," Windsor told the camera. "I'm not the romantic type. That role goes to Val."
Interviews End
The camera cut to the Police Cadets on a sidewalk. "Taxi!" Sanders called out as many cabs passed them. "Taxi! Taxi! There are so many cabs. Why won't they stop?"
"No prob. I got this," MacArthur pushed her partner away, and stood in the middle of the road. "HALT!" she held her badge out, and a cab obeyed and stopped driving.
The camera cut to the driver watching in shock as MacArthur got to the window. "Police!" she said forcefully. "We are commandeering this vehicle, maggot."
MacArthur faced Sanders. "Got one!" she said while Sanders felt conflicted.
World Interview: Police Cadets
"Can you really take a vehicle that you don't own because it's police business?" Sanders asked MacArthur before the bad cop showed a ticket. "What's this? Excessive complaining? That is not an actual offense!"
Interview Ends
The camera cut to the Extreme Girls running towards a set of stairs. "You know what's ironic?" Paris asked.
"What is it?" France wondered.
"Our names are Paris and France, and we're going to leave the city named after us," Paris said.
"What are the odds?" France chuckled before they ran down the stairs, and the Party Dudes followed them.
Outside Interview: Party Dudes
"Our strategy's pretty simple," Brody told the camera. "Instead of trying to figure out how to get somewhere ourselves, we just follow a team that's smarter than us. And pretty much everyone is smarter than us, so yeah. Wicked," he bumped fists with Geoff.
Interview Ends
"We're taking the train station to Calanque de Maubois," Mary said as the camera cut to the Geniuses.
"Got it," Ellody said before they ran off and the Sisters went to the Don Box.
"Alright, teammate of mine!" Kitty said as Mother & Daughter showed up. "Let's have some fun!"
"No," Emma pressed the button and got the tip. "Let's not have fun! Let's come in first for a change." She read the tip as Mother & Daughter got theirs and left. "Train station. Let's go!"
After Emma ran off, Kitty stayed back and cheered "Fun!"
"Stop it," Emma said off-screen, making Kitty follow her.
A mime was walking on the sidewalk and pushing something invisible. The cab the Police Cadets were in passed the mime and blew him back, but he still carried on.
"I need directions, Sanders," MacArthur said as she drove the cab, Sanders was in the passenger seat, and the original driver was in the back.
"There's no map in the glove box," Sanders groaned after searching through.
"Time for bad cop," MacArthur said. The cab stopped and MacArthur started yelling in the cab driver's face. "Train station! Directions! Now!" After she was done, the cab started driving again.
The shot cut to the Bulldogs as they ran through the streets of Paris. "You and me, race to the subway!" Bite declared to an equally competitive Bark. "The loser has to dye their hair red for a month!"
Outside Interview: Bite
"If you chiselers can't tell by now, me and Bark tend to have wagers between the two of us," Bite proudly explained. "I won the last one in the first challenge of the race, but I'm going to lose this so I can be the one to dye my hair."
Interview Ends
"The first nine teams are about to leave the station," Don said as the Jocks, Extreme Girls, Ice Dancers, Party Dudes, Police Cadets, Best Friends, Bulldogs, Pranksters, and Junior were shown running in front of a train.
"Come on, dad!" Junior told his slowly running father before the train started moving.
"The rest of the teams race to catch the next train south," Don said over taxis racing past the camera.
Outside Interview: Fashion Bloggers
Inside the Fashion Bloggers' taxi. Jen was powdering herself while Tom fixed his hair. "The south of France is where the most glamorous people in the world hang out," Tom explained.
"It's like Paris with glossier lipstick," Jen said.
Tom gasped. "Oh! No!" He looked down at the ground and shuffled through his shopping bags. "Please please please tell me I have it! Phew!" He took out a can of spray tan. "Got it! Spray tan?
"You even have to ask?" Jen accepted before the screen got covered with a cloud of spray tan.
Interview Ends
The scene cut to the Geniuses. "Take Lagrant to Canal," Mary told their driver.
"Canal to Germaine," Ellody continued.
"Germain to Balmont," Mary continued.
"Turn left on Lagrant," Ellody followed up.
"Reverse onto Bureaux," Mary followed up.
"And U-turn back to Lagrant south to Dunkirk!" they finished.
World Interview: Geniuses
"We weren't exactly popular in high school," Ellody told the camera, "but memorizing the street maps of every urban center is just as fun as going to parties."
"Or dates, or being a cheerleader, or taking non-science electives, or-" Mary listed off.
"Our choices are paying off," Ellody said. "We can outthink all the other teams."
"Boom!" Mary finished.
Interview Ends
Pete stood at the train station as Gerry met up with him panting and sweating. "Did you run a 4k marathon or what?" Pete quipped at his partner.
Outside Interview: Tennis Rivals
"I took the subway," Pete told the camera, "and he decided to take a taxi."
"With a taxi, you don't have to share your space with anyone," Gerry claimed.
"Except with your imagination!" Pete joked.
Interview Ends
"Hey, can you take a picture of me and my sister?" Kitty asked their cab driver as the shot cut to the Sisters.
"This is a race, Kit," Emma lectured her sister, "not a vacay!"
Kitty hugged her sister with her arm. "Just one picture of me and my big sister in France!" She focused her phone on them. "PARIS!"
The picture was snapped, and Emma let out a groan.
The camera cut back to the train station and panned right across Tammy playing on her ocarina while Max watched, the Tennis Rivals looking around, the Daters making out, the Goths just standing there, and the Geniuses talking to the Fashion Bloggers.
"Your skin pigmentation looks like it's received too much dry hydroxactione," Mary informed the fully tanned Fashion Bloggers. She and Ellody laughed, and the Fashion Bloggers looked at each other uncomfortably.
"As group two waits at the train station," Don narrated, "group one has just arrived at the beach," the scene flashed to the train dropping off the first nine teams at the beach.
"There's the Don Box!" Dwayne called out. He and Brody grabbed a travel tip. "It's a Botch or Watch," he told Junior. "Whose turn is it?"
"Yours," Junior answered. "What's the challenge?"
"Who wants to swim with… SHARKS?!" Brody widened his eyes.
