2024.04.28 22:34 Beth_Thurman Book suggestions please đŸ€

Hiya, so I’m looking for some book recommendations. Some books I’ve read recently that I have liked are school for good mothers- Jessamine Chan, the handmaids tale-Margaret Atwood, Mother Hens- Sophie McCartnery, The Family upstairs-Lisa Jewel.
In my list of books I want to read I have .im glad my mother died by janette McCurdy . A good girls guide to murder
I’ve read loads of Lisa jewel, Christopher berry Dee.
I’m looking for something different to a murder mystery book but like things with crime involved hence the books I’ve recently read and enjoyed. Anything else you could suggest?
Also wanting some books that aren’t crime at all, not big into mystical stuff though or teen romance 😁

2024.04.15 15:25 Syn1134 Easy to read suggestions for adults

I just finished "I'm Glad My Mom Died," by Janette McCurdy and loved it. Prior to this I read "Man's Search for Meaning," and also really enjoyed it. I started to read "The Handmaid's Tale," and although it's interesting it's just too wordy for me. I'm not sure how to explain it. I like books that say what they mean to say and then move on. I feel like adult books have too much extra stuff in them that slow down the story and make me zone out. Does anyone have any adult book suggestions that keep the reader interested without being too much?

2024.04.09 10:00 a7xxii [TOMT] Youtube Teen Pop song c.2010’s

Chancing my arm cause my sister and I have been desperately looking for this song for three years now.
It’s a teen pop song that came off recommendation from So Close by Janette McCurdy (but it’s not country). Music video is mainly (probably) set in a field with a photobooth in the middle of it. The song title may have the word “Kiss” on the title and gives off like a fairytale knight and shining armour vibe.
That’s all we have. We doubt it’s from a known artist so best guess is probably those old youtuber cover artists that went to do their own song at a low budget music video or perhaps an old star from Disney or Nickelodeon that just never made it (kinda like JoJo back in the day)

2024.03.26 04:49 regynalovee skins lore

Anyone wanna share interesting skins lore they’ve learned over the years? I’ll start:
  1. Daniel Kaluuya, before he became insanely famous in America, played Posh Kenneth in gen 1 AND he was the head writer on two episodes. I think he was a writing consultant for a season or two as well. Anyway, he’s was like one of the youngest people to write an hour of aired television in the UK or something back then like it was legit a record.
  2. An obvious one, but Kaya (Effy), Katie and Emily (Kat and Megan Prescott), Karen (Klazara Clayton), Naomi (Lily Loveless), and Jal (Larissa Wilson) are all real life childhood besties. They’re friendly with most of their former cast mates, too.
  3. Kaya has worked with Nic Hoult after skins. She also worked with Joe Cole (luke from gen 3). Cassie and Chris worked on Game of Thrones together. Matty and Grace from gen 3 played love interests in a show years after skins. Luke from Gen 3 and Sketch from Gen 1 were in Peaky Blinders together.
  4. There are Skins books which cover the summer months between each season. There’s also a crap ton of extra unaired episodes. I never watched them all because they were hard to find in the US when I first watched skins. You can find a good bit of them on YT though.
  5. Years and years ago, when the spam community was still a thing, there was this girl who went viral for essentially looking very similar to Kaya Socdelario. This was pre facetune era btw i’m talking like 2014-2016. And the girl was so sweet. She wasn’t from America or the UK so i’m not even sure that she spoke english and she handled the whole thing really well and ended up being a fan of skins. I have NO idea what ever happened to her because this was literally years ago. Hope someone knows who i’m talking about!
  6. Jack O’connell and Kaya S dated for a year or two. Kaya used to be open about talking about how he was really her first love, and how he eventually broke her heart. If i’m remembering correctly, it came out in an interview that he was her first everything if you know what I mean. They were on okay terms until like 2014-2015 and then they kinda cut all contact. She then stopped tagging him in insta pics, didn’t follow him on socials, and he’s never been invited to their annual reunion trips. He like dropped off the face of the earth a few years ago, but I think he’s still working on projects.
  7. A few years back, April Pearson (Michelle) started a podcast called “Are you Michelle from Skins?” and interviewed child actors (a few from skins) about their experiences in the industry. It was very good, and if you know anything about the whole Nickelodeon thing going on rn or about Janette Mccurdys book, you might want to check Aprils podcast out! She and a few other female cast mates spoke about feeling like they were thrown into sex scenes far too young. Kaya has spoke on this briefly as well, but was never a guest on the pod. Kaya has, however, spoke out about how much she resonated with Janette’s book and how she has a shared experience of having an abusive mother that exploited her. Which was shocking because I remember Kaya used to post with her mother and talk about her often in interviews. It makes total sense, though, that she had that experience and it’s really sad to think about.
Edit: I learned today that Kaya S and Daniel Kaluuya grew up together in the same neighborhood. He’s also her son’s godfather. The more you know!

2024.03.23 18:14 squish7641 josh peck

i wanna start off by saying that i do not hate josh peck nor do i think he’s inherently a bad person - the way everyone is currently treating him is disgusting because he struggles with mental health issues and his childhood wasn’t all peaches and roses either (going by the information in his book)
i simply think josh peck is a bad friend. does anyone remember when jennette mccurdy went on his podcast “Good Guys” with josh’s co-host Ben to promote her book and they ended up scrapping the entire thing because Jennette was uncomfortable with the way she was portrayed in the episode??
and josh talks about in another podcast how because of them scrapping the episode that Jennette “owed them” ?
he tries to reach out to her 6 months later after she went on the podcast and tried to text her and found out he was blocked. he was obviously upset and taken aback by that but he literally made it worse the way he kept continuously talking shit about her
before that though, in 2017 there was another incident where josh didn’t invite drake to his wedding and drake took to twitter with his disappointment from not being invited. drake said “i thought we were brothers?” This blows up and the internet takes drakes side
In response, josh tells the internet that they were never real friends and they cut off contact right after drake & josh ended, which we all know is definitely not true (soo many videos and pictures of them together after their departure from drake & josh)
then josh tells this fake ass sopranos type story about how he sees drake at the VMAs months after the wedding incident and “forced” him to apologize to his wife? he was acting like this realllly big tough guy that made drake into a scared puppy.
Except drakes ex-wife was there with them and the whole night was recorded and her and drake says that never happened

If you watched the Drake and Janet podcast you would see where Josh treated drake very badly and drake still only had good things to say about him.
my point is, although Josh doesn’t deserve the amount of hate he’s getting, it’s very clear that guy is not a reliable friend and honestly i had a feeling for years that josh always saw drake as beneath him, especially after josh got with the vlog-squad and such (which is a whole other thing bc hes still friends with most of them even though theyre wildly problematic lol)
The thing with Jennette really bothers me to this day because the whole situation with josh was so insanely slimey. I think he had a poor choice of words “we’re good guys we were nice to her! She owes us!” but she literally doesn’t owe you shit? he kept insisting that his experience was very different than Jennette’s (uh no shit for 1 ur a man and shes a woman??) i think he made her very uncomfortable when she was doing his podcast by stomping on her experience working under Dan.
It makes me so mad because Jennette went on Josh’s podcast the day her book was released and she really trusted that he would be sensitive to her opening up about her past. i dont think he ever took accountability which makes me even more mad
what do yall thinkđŸ€”

2024.03.21 16:14 anti-pants_society If you want more context, Quinton Reviews has a series on YouTube that is leading to a Dan Schneider video ( not released yet)

It is a very long series, but Quinton Reviews has very deep dives into iCarly, Victorious, and Sam and Cat that talk about a lot of the weird things that happen in the show, the drama behind the scenes, and more. In his most recent video, he spends a good amount of time going over Janette McCurdy's book and her writings on " the creator". I highly recommend

2024.03.19 20:59 BlinkMan69 Just imagining a world where all of Dan's stuff was run differently

I think the saddest thing about this whole expose is not that it ruins my childhood, but it seemed like this really great magical world at Disney/Schneider bakery and its all fake. It seemed like such an amazing place. All That as an SNL for kids, then discovering the talent that is Amanda Bynes and creating a spin off show for her. Once she's ready to go do movies, pulling Drake and Josh from that show to make their own spinoff. Then using Miranda from there to make iCarly, with Drake being involved in the theme song. And so on and so on. It just all felt like such a family atmosphere, like everyone was having a blast and interconnected and involved in everyone's stuff. It felt so organic and creative and fun.
And on top of that the shows really were smartly written. They still hold up in a lot of ways and thats a credit to the production and the writing. They really treated these shows like they were adult programs and its the reason they've lasted. It just felt like Dan built this empire that was THE way to run shows as a kid, that can be fun, creative, exciting, good, in a way there never had been for younger programming. But then you find out its all a sham, it was a horrible place to work, rampant sexism, paedophiles on set, kids lives really being destroyed by this. I guess in a way its not all that different than adult productions in Hollywood. Paints such a sour view of the business cause it really doesn't seem like it has to be that way.
But you look at what happened to at least one person from every show. Amanda going nuts, Drake having his issues, Josh having problems with alcohol and pills, Janette really having some serious problems with the production. And thats only the on screen talent. So many on the production staff seem to have horror stories. I guess the saddest thing besides all the truly horrible stuff that happened was that it just didn't seem like it HAD to be that way. It could have been how it looked if there was some oversight. Feels like such a missed opportunity that then taints all the programming we grew up with. I guess its a way more common story than the opposite.

2024.02.08 11:34 kirbyfan137 I'm glad my mom died by Janette Mccurdy

I (f20) just recently listened to this audiobook and I was in fuckign awe...
I cried so bad thinking about it all. I also have a nMom like her. Our experiences are really similar, not talking about also being an actress or something but the patterns our moms put into our brain.
The anorexia, then binging, food addiciton, bulimia... The self destrive patterns, comparing yourself, being jealous, never being good enough. Alcohol and drug abuse... Toxic relationships... General unhappiness.
I just cried so hard thinking about how horrible this is. Its so unfair. We were just little girls and our whole lives are impacted by these whores. i still have so much anger and pain in my heart. All the daughters suffering their whole lives, even worse, becoming just like their mothers... it breaks my heart so bad thinking of every beautiful woman thinking shes not good enough because of a nMom.
I wish my mom was dead as well. I'd finally feel safe in this world. This wound will last forever and my hatred and anger in my heart will never fully go away. i have so much hatred in my heart and i cant get it to go away! I will never have kids because the fear that their life will turn out as horrible is mine is too big.
my mom kicked me out when i was 16 and ive been living with my dad who i love so much since then. but the abuse she put me through will haunt me forever. i cant live a normal life, i cant be happy, or have normal relationships. i have a problem that i can not explain...

2023.11.17 15:04 toxicThomasTrain Alexa Nikolas Calls out Chrisy Carlson Romano and Ned's Pod. Hints at Protecting Lindsay Shaw (Moze) from Devon Werkheiser (Ned) at a Party

I'm sure we're all familiar with Alexa Nikolas at this point, but just so everyone's caught up, Alexa was known for her role as Nicole on "Zoey 101" but is now an activist who is vocal about her experiences during and after her time in the entertainment industry. She encountered challenges including bullying on set from cast, crew, Britney Spears (forgiven), and Dan Schneider. Her experiences in Hollywood, along with a harmful personal relationship that isolated her from her family and took her out of the country, have shaped her adult life.
As an advocate, Alexa focuses on the mistreatment of child actors and the issue of sexual abuse within the entertainment industry. Her "Eat Predators" initiative, presented through her YouTube channel, is a platform for raising awareness about these issues.
Yesterday, Alexa released a video exposing Christy Carlson Romano and the Ned's Podcast. She accused Romano of insincerity in supporting abuse victims and condemned the podcast for using a misleading, defamatory title regarding an incident involving her mother and Lindsay. She called out the Ned's Pod for shit-talking her and calling her crazy, but that's only part of it.
I do recommend watching the video to get a full idea of what she's calling them out for, but there's one specific part of the Ned's section that I can't stop thinking about. Alexas kept alluding to an incident involving Devon Werkheiser, who play Ned Bigby, hinting at potentially serious misconduct at a party that also involved Lindsay Shaw, who played Moze. While Alexa did not make explicit allegations, her insinuations suggest grave concerns about Devon's behavior.
Here are the relevant timestamps and quotes from Alexa where she brings this up:
Alexa then mentions the clip with the clickbait title about how Lindsay and Alexa's mom got into a fistfight. She considers this defamatory and had to get Christy Carlson Romano to take the clip down, but the conversation in the podcast remained. Alexa clarified that Lindsay was the one who hit her mom during the incident and emphasizes that her mom didn't retaliate but was simply trying to protect her.
She starts watching a clip of the pod where Devon is speaking with the guest (Chelsea from Unfabulous) about the "fucked up shit" that went on at Nickelodeon (except at Ned's, they maintain that they never dealt with anything Schneider-level). Chelsea was about to bring up an example she heard about, but before she can get a name out, Devon makes some throaty laugh sound and smirk that comes off as "don't say their names" or it could just be laughing at the victims in general.
Devon then does mention Jenette and Alexa in the convo. Alexa proceeds to mock his tone:
They talk about Alexa specifically, with Chelsea mentioning her Furby collection and how "intense" and "crazy" Alexa was. Alexa mentions that it feels like she is watching her own eulogy with how they talk about her.
That leads right into the first mention of Andrew Caldwell:
Lindsay talks about how she and Alexa were best friends and very close for a time. She mentions how safe Alexa made her feel and says that they did shrooms for the first time together.
1:33:31 This is the incident with Alexa's mom and Lindsay. Lindsay and Alexa wanted to go out, Alexa's mom was worried about her leaving with Lindsay and held onto Alexa to prevent her from leaving, which Lindsay responded to by hitting her mom on the head. This clip of Lindsay was used as a promo with the title of it clickbait about how Lindsay and Alexa's mom got into a fistfight, which Alexa fought to get removed because her mom did no fist fighting.
No one on the pod condemns Lindsay's story, but the topic is quickly shifted over to shitting on Alexa again, escalating until Devon refers to Alexa as unhinged:
It's mentioned again how protective Alexa was, with Devon imitating her as saying she would go as far as yelling "Stay the fuck away from her!"
She reaches the end of the section where they speak about her, and so she wraps up her main points she had been making include one final shot at Devon:
Alexa's comments hint at, if not straight-up allege, a disturbing incident involving Devon and Lindsey took place or nearly took place. As a casual watcher of the Ned's Pod and fan of the show as a kid, and it's been sickening to think about what exactly took place that night between people I feel like I grew up with (in a parasocial way).
Christy's cancelled to me regardless, I've thought she came off as fake AF since her 'Throwback Kitchen' days, but admittedly Vulnerable became a guilty watch. But nah, not anymore, her vibes are off and honestly Podco as a whole makes F-tier podcasts. But that's beside the point.
What does this sub make of these allegations? Will this be one that catches attention, or just another one that most will ignore?

2023.10.26 02:52 darriusty Maya's family ties

We’ve seen almost all of each of the main casts family, Joan and her mother and father, both of sets of Lynn’s parents and a sister, damn near all of Toni’s family minus a brother or sister or so, and even Williams’s dad, fake mom and sister minus his real mom. But thinking on it, all we know of Maya is her mom Janette and her cousin Ronnie. No mention of her dad or any other close relatives. Let me know if I’m mistaken, but didn’t Maya have a scene where she said she really doesn’t have a big family and she calls a lot of ppl her cousin to make up for it or something like that. But it also leads me left because the episode where Terri J. Vaughn worked as the janitor her and Maya both found out they were cousins thru Monte, and that was their common kinship. I’ve just always wondered where was Maya’s dad and whose siblings are connected, the mom or dad, that makes her cousins with Ronnie. She has to have an aunt or uncle somewhere right. My thoughts 💭

2023.10.22 01:33 Glittering_Toe8599 I forgot that today is the anniversary of my moms death...

I am looking for some guidance. my mom died a few years ago while I was in highschool. Her and i lived alone and I am the one who found her. She wasn't evil but she was very religious and she did the whole emotional incest thing. it took me several years for me to stop deifying her and to realize that she was just as much of an abuser as my dad and my stepmom. I deified her because my father and my stepmom were/are real peaces of shit, and she gave me a bit of a haven from their outright derision. however now I realized that our relationship was incredibly unhealthy in other ways. Even before the Janett McCurdie book came out I had thought about and it and realized that I was better off without her in my life. the thing is this day still fucks with me. Im not usually very in touch with my feelings and was wondering if people had insight as to what grief looks like several years after an abuser you loved dies

2023.10.17 19:03 Keoicn What kinds books do enjoy reading in small doses?

FWIW, I'm not looking for recommendations. Just wanted to start a conversation!

Many of y'all enjoy reading (or accidentally end up reading) for hours. I am definitely not one of those people! But I do enjoy reading regularly. I'm a full time doctoral student and don't have a ton of time to sit down with a good book and just read. I've found myself using services like Libby so when I'm on campus and have a few minutes before or after class, I can read a few pages without bringing another book with me. For those folks like me who read in small doses, what are you reading?

Non-fiction is great for this for me since there's no real plot to follow. I can turn to most pages and read a short paragraph about something interesting. Books like "Thinking Fast and Slow" or "Atomic Habits" have both been really helpful for me to stay engaged with productivity and my academic endeavors.

I've also enjoyed reading memoirs for this reason. While there is a definitely a story, I find myself able to retain more of the chronology since there usually aren't a ton of names to remember in a convoluted plot meant to twist and turn. Tara Westover's memoir, "Educated" and Janette McCurdy's memoir "I'm Glad My Mom Died" were both wild reads with fairly short chapters.

I've also enjoyed reading easier fiction in my little windows of time, too. I recently read "Catherine House" by Elisabeth Thomas. While it wasn't my favorite (no spoilers), it was recommended from a reading podcast as a good autumnal/Halloween season read. Quick read and easily digestible in small sittings.

2023.10.10 21:35 spiders_are_neat7 Please hear me out.

Please hear me out.
Hi. I’m Amanda I’m autistic into psychology because I myself was emotionally abused and neglected growing up.
I first off want to start by saying I know people blame Eugenia, and call this enabling, but I believe she is a victim, still currently. I believe her sense of reality is warped due to years of emotionally abusive enmeshed relationship with her mother.
I want to explain that emotional abuse is so psychologically CONFUSING
I don’t think Eugenia knows she’s being abused, I don’t think Eugenia knows she has an eating disorder. She might have admitted to it once, but words hold no weight.
I’d like to refer to Janette mccurdys book “I’m glad my mom died.” She had an eating disorder for years before even realizing it, because her mom condoned the eating habits for the sake of living through her and the only reason she realized she had a problem was because she has outside support
and her mom didn’t have full control over her life, because couldn’t, and she didn’t need to.
Eugenia’s mom similar to an abusive S.O. has manipulated her into pushing away all outside support that truly has her best interest at heart. Why? Eugenia’s mothers best interest (living through her daughter and having complete control over her daughter.) doesn’t align with what’s really in her daughters best interest.
Enmeshed parents even refuse to let their kids grow up and leave the nest
they reject things that symbolize growing up, like buying larger clothes
 that leads to body dysmorphia
Eugenia has always lived with her mother
never seemed to date anyone
it doesn’t seem like the way any woman would choose to live their life unless they’re being manipulated into believing the world is dangerous and scary.
I’m no contact with my mother for my healing
thanks to finding outside support
and I never would have know it was actually abusive and toxic until I left and got shown what it should be like. After blaming myself my entire life for my mom not loving me the way a mother should, I had an internal battle for the whole first year of going no contact STILL, wondering if I was being too harsh, and feeling guilty for hurting her, even though never once in my entire life did she put my best interest ahead of her own.
I think if I was never shown what normalcy is like, a healthy dynamic between someone who genuinely cares about you as your own person and not an extension of themselves, I would still be there trying to be perfect, while being picked apart passively day by day, just passively enough that you can’t call it out and you can’t even point it out in your head over time as wrong, you just start to believe you’re defective. I would still be being bent and warped to be her little side kick
even as an adult, because when you’re neglected and teased your whole life with conditional love, especially from a parent you become desperate for it, and you’ll do what they want you to do
and they’re passive and cool about it so you feel guilty when you “hurt them” because that’s your mom ya know?
idk I just wish someone could call an adult protective services.

Hello y’all. :) I’ll be honest, I love reading and books. Listening to the recent episode (“Reading” atm) inspired me to put together little lists of possible books to read if you were looking for book recs/something that could help you get back into reading. I’m not a librarian nor teacher, so I can’t speak on helping someone with reading disability (such as dyslexia). I only mean to offer what I can.
(If you do know of reading resources or your own book recs, feel free to comment below!! This is more than welcome to be a communal kind of thing)

2023.07.04 23:31 Equivalent-Date-4796 Genuinely inappropriate behavior in the Baldwin household?

So I wasn't a fan of Hillary and knew about the Spanish grift, but didn't know about the fake pregnancies or the body photoshopping. I just thought she had a lot of kids and was really in shape. I thought the photos were months after, not AT THE HOSPITAL.
Anyway, then I saw the surrogate pregnancies she hides to body shame other women, the fake miscarriages, and the trapped kids.
When I saw the stupid Hamptons family photo shoot of her in a bra, I thought what must have happened was she wanted to take a topless photo outdoors (she's a natural yogini, etc.) with all her kids around her (breasts wouldn't show, the kids seating positions would cover the nipples, if you can imagine this), and that Alec drew the line at that.
Like those sexy photos models do, and nipples are strategically covered...her kids would be used to cover them, and she wanted a "nature mother" type of photo shoot. Anyway, hence the bra.
So I kind of had that in the back of my mind. But at some point after that, in the last few months, after I chanced upon this sub (a suggestion sub for comments made about Meghan Markle in this sub, as I am active in a Meghan Markle snark sub), I started having concerns about inappropriate behavior happening in the Baldwin household. It was around when someone posted her photo of her hanging her breasts into a stroller to "breastfeed" while also throwing one leg on top of the stroller so full view was given in the picture of the hanging breast or something.
Outside of this sub at that time, I also read of two things. I learned of actress Jeanette McCurdy's inappropriate behavior by her mother, taking showers with her until she was 16, physical examinations of her, etc.
I also learned of Ariel Leve's memoir, "An inappropriate life." Her mother was a famous author (like award-winning) and who grew up in a penthouse on Park Avenue. This woman's life, as a child, involved famous authors and artists like Truman Capote and Andy Warhol showing up as friends of her mother's to her home. Anyway, her beautiful mother (her beauty was emphasized and she is still alive) used to do disturbing things like have her young daughter lie between her legs while she was naked and pretend she was being "reborn." She told her daughter she loved her so much she wanted to relive that experience. This poor little girl thought it so normal, she invited her friend to lie between her mom's legs on a playdate, and then the friend did it with her (lay between Ariel's mom's legs while the moms was naked). Later, the friend told her parents and the friend's parents didn't allow her to come over to Ariel's again.
So back to Hillary's stupid stroller and naked breast picture. I started worrying what happens when the older boys would come into the room and she does these things. I would imagine they may ask how old kids are before they stop, or why she's always doing it, or any number of questions, and horrifyingly, Hillary, who's kind of topless in so many IG photos, just sitting there topless in the privacy of her home while talking about this, or worse, telling them they are not too old to do this still with her and how it just shows how much Mami loves them, etc.
I mean, seriously, if she's posting the "twin" fake breastfeeding photo in the grass, bra squished out, those older boys were at that photo shoot. And this is in public! It's, very sadly, not that farfetched to think that far, far worse happens in private.
The same could be said of posting poor Marilu with feces in her diaper, on a bathroom floor. I mean, what is happening in private if this is in public?
Sorry for the long post. Percentage-wise, abusive behavior like this only happens a small percent of the time. But, in sheer numbers, if you think about billions of people in the world, the raw number of sickos adds up.
I've been thinking of this for months and didn't want to post, but now, after seeing the "twin" breastfeeding picture and the dirty diaper photo in this sub (both earlier today), I feel I need to, Not that anyone in this sub can do anything about this.
