Original Prompt

Chapter 26
"Okay, what about...that one. The five stars about...two handspans above that dune?" Cass asked.
Kher looked where Cass was pointing, holding his torch aside so he could get a clear view of the stars.
"That is one of the Twins," Kher said, "See the three stars to the right? That is her brother, fleeing the Serpent."
"Weird." Cass had unbraided her hair earlier in the night because of the chill. Now she was trying to hold it out of her face so she could see the stars clearly. "In Sammos they're the Mother and her child, running to embrace each other after being parted over the winter season."
"Or reaching for each when the winter floods wash the boy away," Charis added. They were riding on Cass's other side, holding their torch down low over the side of their camel to keep the light off of Cass's left arm. She appreciated the gesture.
"In Chol they don't' have a name for those stars," Cass continued, "but they do have a Serpent. I don't think it's visible this time of year though. And in Harenae it's the 'Father and Son'. The father's teaching his son how to hunt."
"Do they have a story in Desheret?" Kher asked.
"I haven't heard one." Cass turned in her saddle to look back along the short caravan. Kebb was nowhere to be seen, probably keeping vigil in the rear. Anatu was attached to one of the carts, which only left Nuu as someone she could see to ask.
"Nuu!" She called, waving. They looked her way, eventually approaching. "What do you call those stars?"
"Is there a tale to them?" Kher asked.
"The three bright ones?" They looked skyward vacuously for a moment. "That is Sobek, a large crocodile that follows the flood waters of the Great River. Those stars are his open maw."
"What about the five stars to the left of them?"
"The two lower ones," Nuu said while pointing, "are his body. The upper three are his tail curled around."
"Ah yes, I can see it!" Kher said excitedly. "A more creative tale, I think. I wonder how it is yours is so different from our tales. We call them the-"
"Hey, Cass," Charis whispered, leaning closer, "you mentioned I could see your arm after dark?"
She looked down at her bandaged limb and flexed her fingers uncomfortably. The wrappings were much tighter now that she'd had ample time out of the sun.
"Okay, but keep your torch away." She tugged on the knot holding the bandages in place, let them loosen, and unwrapped her arm. Charis gasped as her skin showed in the starlight with thin motes of light of its own.
Under the light of the sun or flame, Cass's arm was thin and the skin looked brittle and burnt. The comparison to burnt wood was not uncommon. But under the stars and moon it looked wholly different.
"Beautiful," Charis whispered, gazing at the black abyss. The colors and patterns within it were similar yet very different from the sky above. As Cass moved the lights moved as well, as though flowing through her limb. Never the same pattern twice.
"Thanks." People were always mesmerized by her arm at night. The ones who weren't convinced it was a blight of some sort, at least. She extended her hand to Charis. They looked up at her briefly for permission, then took her hand in theirs. Unlike during the day, there was no pain. Their skin didn't feel uncomfortably warm either. In fact it was rather cool and pleasant.
Charis tucked their long curls behind one ear as they laced their fingers with hers. She lifted her hand closer to their face so they could take a closer look.
"It's strange," they said softly, "your hand looks so different, so..."
"Weird?" Cass offered.
They shook their head. "No...magical. But if I close my eyes I would be unable to tell this hand from your other."
Weird, odd, cursed, strange, these were what Cass was used to hearing her arm called. The only person who'd ever complimented her on it like that - who'd called it magical - before was Helen. Back before the war, before she'd killed the King of Sammos. When their encounters were furtive and hidden at night.
"Oh?" Cass looked away and tried to change the subject. "Can't tell your left from right?"
Charis chuckled and gave her hand a squeeze.
"What's going on here?" Nuu asked while riding closer. Their torch illuminated Cass's arm and the pain instantly came back. It wasn't as bad as if she were caught out in sunlight, but the entwined fingers became sore. She only barely got her hand out of Charis's before her hand clenched reflexively.
"Damnit!" Cass swore.
"You need to back away, Nuu." Charis said hotly.
"Calm, everyone, calm." Kher spoke up. "No need for such vehemence. Nuu, I believe they want some...alone time?" He gave Cass a big smile through his braided beard.
Nuu narrowed his eyes at her. "I thought I saw her changing."
"I wasn't. You'd know if I was." She felt bad enough every time she saw their sister's brass leg. Being reminded that they were survivors of one of her attacks was not a pleasant vortex of emotions.
"If you lose control-"
"I don't lose control! I've never lost control. It's not something I'm not in control of." Cass clenched her left fist, reminding herself it wasn't worth hurting them. "Put your torch out and I'll show you."
"I've already seen it."
"You've seen it as an enemy. How about I show you what it actually looks like?" Cass turned in her saddle and extended the black and burnt-looking hand. Nuu recoiled, but there was a curiosity behind their eyes. They gave a quick glance at Charis who lowered their torch behind their camel again. Nuu did the same, and Kher followed suit. Bathed in darkness again, they all looked at the starry field of Cass's arm.

2024.05.11 21:57 percypers TMA x HSR Crossover!!! :3

Spoilers for The Magnus Archives S4!!
BG info for those who don't know about either HS TMA: TMA is a horror podcast and a big central point are 'The Fourteen (Fifteen) Fears' which essentially are 14 catalysts of fear, they feed on the fear of people and animals.
E.G of The Slaughter from Google: It is the fear of pure, unpredictable, unmotivated violence, with strong ties to war. It is the fear of not knowing where, how, or when pain will come but that it will, and can be violent like a frenzied killer or calm, cold and regimented like soldiers firing on the battlefield.
HSR (Honkai Star Rail) is a turn based story game, in which the playable characters follow a 'path' in their life. Those who follow a path are: Those who believe in and practice the concepts behind a certain path become Pathstriders, and the path that they happen to follow will change in accordance with their own philosophies and opinions.
HERES WHERE THE AU COMES IN!! Some Fears/ Paths have cool correlations. and I love that. so lets assign them!! some are easier than others, but im trying :3
(there are only 7 paths playable in HSR right now, so not all 14 fears from TMA will be assigned, obviously) (HSR on the left, TMA on the right)
Destruction = The Extinction or The Desolation (The Extinction is not a fully fledged fear, so The Desolation may work too. The Extinction is the fear of catastrophic change, and The Desolation is the fear of cruelty, pain and destruction. The Destruction is described as reckless, wrathful, and destructive actions.)
The Hunt = The Hunt (The Hunt [TMA] is the fear of hunted or being prey. It doesn't fit great, but to be fair none of the other fears fit in my opinion. The Hunt [HSR] are usually determined, ruthless and tenacious people)
Erudition = The Eye (People who fear The Eye fear being watched or exposed. This doesn't really fit Erudition, BUT most people who are touched by The Eye or an Avatar of The Eye, hold many similarities to a Pathstrider of Erudition (I'm looking at you Jon) Erudition Pathstriders are usually logical and strategic, always thinking (Just like The Eye avatars))
Harmony = The Spiral, The Web or The Vast (None of the fears really fit this one. As Harmony is all about understanding, support and cooperation, which basically none of The Fears are, lmao. The Spiral is the fear of insanity or deception, which could fit as the most prevalent entity of The Spiral (The Distortions (Michael and Helen)) like to pretend to be nice sometimes, Helen liked to help the MC and then also try to kill him lol The Web is the is the fear of being controlled or manipulated, which could fit for how Harmony is cooperative The Vast doesn't have any real correlation, asthe fear of being insignificant or lost, HOWEVER the main entitiy of The Vast, Simon Fairchild, IS SO CHILL. Hes great honeslty, great old man who loves the sky. kinda nice, not tryna kill people!!)
Nihility = The Corruption or The Lonely (Possibly The Stranger) (Again, its hard to fit again. but i think these work. Nihility is people who admire laziness, exhaustion, and meaningless behavior, which could fit The Corruption (fear of disease or pestilence) as a lot of Corruption statements come from lazy people who don't care for their home or themselves (mold, insects etc). Or The Lonely (fear of being isolated or disconnected) as many effected by it may be lazy or done with life, exhausted physically and mentally The Stranger (fear of the uncanny and of change, mainly depicted through a circus ringleader mannequin brought to life) is possible if you take into account the playable characters who follow Nihility, Sparkle, Sampo etc, who all share some traits with The Stranger or even The Spiral, but I'm trying to focus in the path as a whole not the characters)
Preservation = no clue!! (Those who follow this path admire patience, sacrifice, and defensive behavior, and i don't think any fears fit this.)
Abundance = also no clue :/ (Abundance is selflessness, altruism, and healing, which doesn't really fit any fears)
Input welcome!! Though please give credit, just a link to this post, if you do anything with this! (I want to in the future :3)

PART ONE THOUSAND AND EIGHT
[Previous Chapter] [Next Chapter] [The Beginning] [Patreon+2]
Sunday
We materialised in a shop-front alcove, with a solid concrete wall to my right and a panelled wooden display wall behind glass to my left.
“Keep going,” Rubin said in my ear.
Not sure why he was being so insistent, I nevertheless strode forward as if I knew where I was going, and in just a few steps, the presence of multiple lanes of New York City traffic swept over me. Four lanes, all facing the same way, meant we were on one of the main arterial streets like Fifth Ave or Park Ave. ‘Zara’, a clothes boutique on the other side of the street did nothing to narrow the field any for me.
Not that it mattered. My point with this deductive reasoning was that neither of those streets had curbside parking.
Yet, sure enough, Dad's SUV was on the other side of the sidewalk in the closest lane of traffic, waiting for the lights to change. “Get in, quick!” Rubin ordered.
This wouldn’t be the first time I jumped into an illegal ‘traffic-light-parked’ car, and I raced for the back door, swinging it open and diving inside just as the lights changed. The door ‘magically’ shut itself behind me as I straightened up in my seat and took in Kulon behind the wheel and Gerry in the seat to my right.
“Hey, Angel,” I said, leaning forward to give her a quick kiss. “Missed you.”
“How’d it go with—er—your uncle?” Gerry asked, struggling with the normality of me having met with her god.
“Wanna put your seatbelt on back there, Sam?” Kulon chuckled, glancing at me in the rearview mirror as we moved forward across the intersection.
“It went better than I thought,” I admitted, then grinned. “I even got a really cool old-school bomber jacket out of it.” I saw her cringe and giggled evilly. “And you can’t hate on it, because it was literally a present from God himself.”
She clenched her hands into loose fists and pressed the heels of her palms to her temple. “I-I can’t even…” she finally stammered, and my giggle morphed into a full-blown cackle.
“I’ll show you when we get home. I don’t think you’ll hate it. It’s really nice and super authentic.” I then turned my attention to Kulon. “And dude! That has got to be soooo handy,” I said, gesturing back to where I’d jumped in the car. I was blown away by how easily it would be to catch people like that, just by realm-stepping the second a car was held up at lights. No guesswork. Not even coordinates. Just knowing.
“It has its moments,” Kulon agreed. “So, are we heading home?”
“Yes, please. The guys want to go out to Angus’ place to play some more ball this afternoon, but if I don’t get some home time in with Gerry between now and then, I won’t be going anywhere.”
The trip back to the apartment was quick, with Rubin vanishing as fast as he appeared once we had the building in sight. And with him on hand to pull back the guys any time we needed them, Kulon and Quent both stayed with the car and drove away together once Gerry and I were inside.
Of course, my luck just wasn’t playing nice with me today, for I knew the second I set foot in the apartment and saw Dad rise purposefully from his chair just inside the living room that having fun-time with Gerry wasn’t in my immediate future.
“I need a word with you, Sam,” he said, stepping between the sofa and the coffee table to give Gerry access to the rest of the apartment (with Dad standing in the doorway, it was as if it had been walled off).
“Daaaad,” I moaned, not really caring at this point what he wanted. After the morning I’d had, I needed some real Robbie-food and an hour or four in bed with my girl … minimum!
“Now, Sam.” His tone changed when he looked at Gerry and added, “We won’t be long, sweetheart.”
Not that it mattered. His initial bark had taken all my attention, and I felt my heart clench in my chest, wondering what else I’d done wrong. Not even Uncle YHWH had yelled at me, and I’d accidentally screwed with a couple of his worshippers. I couldn’t think of anything to warrant that, and as I processed the possibilities and came up blank, I barely felt Geraldine’s kiss to my cheek. “I’ll go and do some light reading in the bedroom,” she said, slipping out of my arms and making her way past Dad with a nod.
A few seconds later, I heard our bedroom door open and close, and I looked at Dad like he’d kicked a puppy. “Was that really necessary?”
“Would I have done it if it wasn’t?” Dad countered, and I had to remember who I was talking to. Between my run-in with Tucker’s people and my conversation with Uncle YHWH, I was being bolder than I had any right to be.
I forced myself to relax. “Sorry. It’s been a rough morning already.” I rubbed my chest again because, contrary to what anyone says, being tasered sucked, even if I did heal from it almost instantly.
Dad immediately frowned. “What happened? I thought you were visiting Gerry’s father for breakfast.”
“We were … I mean we did.” So much else had happened, and I didn’t feel like going into all of it. And since he was standing to one side, I headed into the kitchen, dropping my shoulder low to avoid his half-hearted grab on my way through.
I stopped at the plate warmer and was miffed at its empty state. My next port of call was the divine box Robbie called Voila. I remembered him telling me how I had to know what was in there for it to work (that, and how Charlie had scared the crap out of him yesterday morning when she’d told him the box was empty), but this was also Robbie, and he always had what we wanted ready to go. I brought to mind the one thing that would tide me over until lunch. The same thing that had been missing from Tucker’s table.
Just as I’d hoped, when I lifted the lid, an egg-filled baguette with bacon and cheese was waiting for me on a single sandwich plate. “Ye-essss,” I hissed in victory, lifting out the plate and taking the biggest bite I could manage without choking myself. “Thank you, Robbie, wherever you are! I love you!” My words were utterly muffled, but he wasn’t here, so it didn’t matter.
“Their food not to your liking?” Dad asked with an amused smirk.
“The company was challenging,” I answered evasively once I’d chewed enough to swallow. I then went over to the fridge and dug out the jug of freshly squeezed mango juice that I could never get enough of. With both items in my hands now, I was happy.
“Don’t even,” Dad warned when I instinctually lifted the jug to my lips.
“Hmmh?” The sound would’ve been an innocent ‘huh’, except I’d clamped my lips closed like that had never been my plan and put the jug on the island on the way to get a cup. With the dishwasher closer, I opened the door and grabbed one of the glasses from the second shelf. I then nudged the door shut with my shin and slid into Boyd’s seat, dragging the rest of my prizes over to me.
“So, what’s the family crisis?” I asked, pouring myself a drink but keeping the jug within easy reach. Wow, I really do use that word a lot, don’t I? I took a deep swallow to clear my throat, sighed, and then returned for another huge bite of my baguette.
“My youngest brother, Barris, our Mystallian God of the Hunt, has learned about you.”
Oh, for frig’s sake! I lowered the baguette and sat back in Boyd’s chair, my full focus once more on Dad. “Okay,” I answered cautiously, torn between frustration and annoyance. The other word choice that sprang to mind was a sarcastic ‘really’, which would probably require someone picking out an urn for my remains.
Dad shook his head and raised one hand with flared fingers. “It’s nothing bad.” He then pointed at my plate. “Finish your sandwich first.”
My next mouthfuls were maybe a third of the first two, and I might as well have been eating tyre rubber for all the enjoyment I was getting out of it. “How much does he know about me?” I asked between bites.
Dad moved to stand beside me at the corner of the island. “He knows you’ve almost graduated college. He knows there was animosity between your mother and me that’s since been resolved, and he knows about the pregnancy now.”
Now, the baguette felt like a rock in my gut. “Great.”
He slid into Lucas’ seat and curled a hand around my forearm near the elbow, anchoring me in place. “Sam, I said it’s okay. He’s on our side.”
I squinted. A lot of people were making that claim lately and I wasn’t sure I believed it anymore. “What does that mean, exactly?”
Dad met my stare squarely, and I was always amazed at how easily he could do that. “He knows the dangers to your mother, so he’s going to run interference on the family for us until after the babies are born. Despite the fact that it’ll put him in the same crosshairs with the rest of our family as us when they find out he knew, he’s going to do it anyway. He only asks one thing in return.”
I barely restrained my eye-roll. “Of course he does.”
Dad’s face morphed into a dark scowl, and his grip tightened painfully. “You will show your uncle the respect he deserves,” he warned.
I dropped my eyes to his waist; so not up for this. “Yes, sir.”
Dad’s intake for breath was both loud and frustrated. He kicked the leg of the chair I was sitting on for good measure, and when my gaze snapped to his, he was pointing two fingers of his free hand at his own eyes. “That’s right, boy. Right here. Nowhere else. Not there … not there … not way over there.” He pointed to three random locations in the apartment before returning to their original spot before his eyes. “Right here. Always. You get me?”
For some reason, Dr Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham started rolling through my brain, and I was quite proud of myself that I didn’t smirk or even blink. “Yessir.”
He didn’t get any calmer. “Okay …” he finally said, after a few seconds that was—who knew how long for him if he internalised to settle down— “I know we’ve only touched lightly on this before, but I need you to lift your game before we meet with your uncle, starting with stripping the words ‘sir’ and ‘ma’am’ from your vocabulary. I know your stance on human manners, and I’ve accepted your decision and will support it when it comes up with the others. That said, even the humans hardly ever use those two servitude titles anymore, and you can’t afford to appear weak in front of our family. Okay?”
Dad was compromising. I knew the family wouldn’t agree with my use of manners, but Dad was willing to back that, and to me, it was the more important of the two. “I’ll try,” I said because I couldn’t say for sure if I’d succeed without premonition, and that one wasn’t in my wheelhouse.
Ha, I made a divine funny.
So, why aren’t I laughing?
Probably because I still hadn’t heard what Uncle Barris wanted in exchange for his cooperation. It couldn’t be my head on a pike, as neither of my parents would go for that. But what?
“He wants to meet you, Sam, at a destination of your choosing and he’s agreed not to come here looking for you so long as that request is met. He hasn’t even asked for this address.”
“He’s the god of hunting, Dad. Hunting me down would be a cakewalk for someone like him.”
“True, except he’s promised not to go there unless it’s an emergency. You’re his nephew, Sam. A nephew he knew nothing about until last night. All he wants to do is meet you, and given the circumstances, I don’t think that’s too much to ask, do you?”
“How did he find out?” I asked instead of answering.
Dad’s expression soured. “Helen Portsmith. Apparently, she turned up at his gym last night with her usual spiel; only this time, your uncle put it together correctly and came looking for me for real answers. I told him about you and your mother. I told him our secrets.”
Something about the way he worded that… “As opposed to what?”
“I still haven’t mentioned Robbie or his connection to Yitzak. Nor have I mentioned the true gryps living with us, except for Tiacor, who’s there for your mother.”
I was starting to put this together. “Okay, so when we meet, no mention of Robbie as a cousin, or that he has a food innate, or that Yitzak and Collette know about him.” I got the feeling learning that we had true gryps in the household wouldn’t really amount to much, as they could be anywhere they wanted to be all over the world. It was their world as much as ours.
“Exactly.”
“What about Clefton and Nick? They’ve been here and met us too.”
“Mention them only if you want to get them into trouble for not outing you from the very beginning. Same with Nuncio.”
Well, that’s a hard ‘no’. “Maybe Cuschler?”
Dad scowled again. “There’s no bad blood between us anymore, right?” he asked, cocking an eyebrow warningly.
I sighed. Spoilsport. “Fine. But what about Fisk and the girls … and Najma?” It wasn’t that I’d forgotten my nephew, just that my brother and sisters rolled off the tongue first. “Danika’s been here, and Najma tracked me down at school before everyone else had met me. Even Fisk has popped in from time to time to touch base.”
“Barris knows they knew, and he understands why they’ve kept it quiet. Nothing’s going to happen until the reunion, and even then, maybe nothing if your mother still hasn’t given birth.”
I pushed my half-eaten baguette away and pressed my forehead to the island. “Everybody knows a little bit,” I griped. “How in the world am I meant to keep tabs on who knows what?”
Dad’s grin made me want to kick him the way he’d kicked my chair. “What do you think internalising is for? Remembering whatever we want is literally our jam.”
“I s’pose.” But combing through the details at every turn still seemed like an awful lot of effort, even if that process did seem instantaneous to everyone else. It wasn’t to us.
Dad reached past me and brought back my baguette. “Finish your sandwich. You can go as you are. Your uncle runs a gym downtown, so he’s not exactly at his best either.”
I stared at him in horror. “We’re going right now?”
“Why not now?”
Because I just got back from seeing Uncle YHWH! “I dunno. I mean, it’s too soon, don’t you think?”
I don’t know how else to describe it, but Dad’s expression turned … parental. “And when would a good time be for you with your hugely busy schedule now that school has wrapped up?” he asked like I was an idiot.
I gave a nervous, shrugging roll of my shoulders. “I understand there’s this get-together happening at the end of the year…”
I kinda expected the cuff to the back of my head and tried not to snicker when it happened.
“Don’t be a smartass. Finish your sandwich, and we’ll go. This won’t take long.”
With nothing else for it, I did as I was told, leaving the empty plate and cup on the sink since the dishwasher hadn’t been emptied. “I’m so glad I got a say in this…” I muttered quietly under my breath.
“What was that?”
“Nothing.”
I have no idea why I thought we’d at least use the front door to leave. Probably because most people did. But this was Dad, and we were going to meet his brother, and he clearly didn’t want me to have the chance of wriggling out of it.
So without warning, he slapped his hand on my right shoulder and shoved me forward, realm-stepping away with me as I stumbled to keep my footing.

In an attempt to prevent that from happening, he attacked the family in their home. Teresa was strangled, while William, Winter, and another daughter, 3 year old Anah, were shot dead. Bramblett then set the house on fire to destroy any evidence of the murders. He had several abuse allegations and was also suspected in the 1977 disappearances of two 14 year old girls, Tammy Akers and Angela Rader, that worked for him, but was never charged for any of them.

94. James Reid (1996-2004, lethal injection): Reid stabbed 87 year old Annie Lester 22 times with a pair of scissors, beat her with a can of milk, and strangled her with the cord of a heating pad. He left the body in her bedroom and fled her house. Although the evidence for his guilt was overwhelming (which included the blood on his clothes matched Lester's DNA, several of his fingerprints were discovered on the murder weapons, samples of his saliva were found on a cigarette butt in her house, and his handwriting was identical to the writing of a death threat sent to Lester), Reid's death sentence and execution was contested on the grounds of him allegedly having brain damage from a car accident, seizures, and alcoholism. The motivations behind Lester's murder remain unknown, but prosecutors suspected that it might have been part of a bungled robbery or rape attempt.
95. Dexter Vinson (1997-2006, lethal injection): Vinson attacked his ex girlfriend, 25 year old Angela Felton, near her home. Felton tried to escape by driving away, but he rammed her car with his, and forced her inside it. She was then dragged into a vacant house, raped, beaten, and stabbed in the face, neck, arms, buttocks, stomach, and vagina. The body was left in the house as Vinson fled the scene.
96. Brandon Hedrick (1997-2006, electric chair): Hendrick kidnapped a sex worker, 23 year old Lisa Crider, while he was cruising for prostitutes. Initially, Crider and Hendrick had engaged in paid consensual relations, but the situation turned violent when he robbed her of $50 at gunpoint. She was then raped, shot in the face, and dumped into a river.
97. Michael Lenz (~1990s-2006, lethal injection): While serving 29 years for a burglary and weapons possession conviction, Lenz stabbed a fellow inmate, 41 year old Brent Parker, to death. 100. Robert Yarbrough (1997-2008, lethal injection): Yarbrough and his accomplice tied up 77 year old Cyril Hamby while robbing his grocery store. They subjected Hamby to beatings and nearly decapitated him with a pocket knife. The pair then stole beer, wine, cigarettes, and an undisclosed amount of money.

Sniper”, Muhammad shot and killed 17 random people between the ages of 21-76 with the help of a teenage accomplice in mostly sniper attacks. The killings took place in the national capital, hence the epithet, and across several states. Due to his affiliation with the Nation of Islam and the accomplice’s accounts of planning terrorist attacks and training camps, Muhammad’s murder spree are often considered to be acts of Islamic extremism in the media. However, experts believe that his real intentions was to kill his estranged wife using the sniper attacks as a mask. Muhammad had a long history of domestic violence, and had abducted his children from his estranged wife on numerous occasions. His accomplice had also accused him of sexual abuse a few years after his execution.

106. Paul Powell (1999-2010, electric chair): Angry that his friend, 16 year old Stacie Reed, was in an interracial relationship, Powell made an attempt to rape her in her home. When she fought back, Powell stabbed her to death. He also tied up Stacie's 14 year old sister to be raped, stabbed, and strangled, and left the girl to die in the family's basement. The sister managed to survive with the timely arrival of their stepfather, who called the police and the paramedics to the scene. On the mistaken belief that the death penalty was off the table, Powell sent letters flaunting the lewd details of the murder to taunt the prosecutors, judge, and the victims’ family.
107. Darick Walker (~1996-2010, lethal injection): In 1996, Walker walked up to the door of 36 year old Stanley Beale, and angrily accused him of showing up at his home despite the fact that they were complete strangers. He then shot Beale dead in front of his children and girlfriend, and ran away from the scene. A year later, Walker forced himself into an apartment, and shot 34 year old Clarence Threat seven times while he was laying in bed with his girlfriend. Walker had a history of violence and frequently stole from his friends and family. In one reported incident, he kicked the stomach of a pregnant woman in an act of rage.
108. Teresa Lewis (2002-2010, lethal injection): Lewis conspired with two men that she had a sexual relationship with to kill her husband, 51 year old Julian, and her stepson, 25 year old Charles. Charles was about to be deployed to participate in the then upcoming invasion of Iraq, which gave him a $250,000 life insurance policy that Lewis wanted to collect from both him and his father. She let her accomplices inside their trailer, and shot Julian and Charles while they were sleeping. Charles was killed immediately, while Julian, who witnessed Lewis pay the attackers, survived long enough to notify the responders of his wife's involvement.
109. Jerry Jackson (2001-2011, lethal injection): Jackson broke into the apartment of 88 year old Ruth Phillips, and woke her up while he was rummaging through her room. Despite Phillips' pleas for her life, Jackson raped her and suffocated her to death with a pillow. He stole her car and a total of $60 in the break in, and spent the stolen money on marijuana.
110. Robert Gleason (2007+(?)-2013, electric chair): In 2007, Gleason shot and killed 54 year old Michael Jamerson, in order to prevent him from testifying about his drug trafficking activities, and was given a life sentence for the murder. While incarcerated, he tied up and strangled his cellmate, 63 year old Harvey Watson (who serving a life sentence for a mass shooting). Prison officials then transferred him to a high security prison to await trial for Watson’s murder, but he managed to strangle another inmate, 26 year old Aaron Cooper (who was serving 34 years for robbery), to death with the wire that separated their cages. Gleason demanded the death penalty, which was given to him by the courts. He also claimed that he committed several other killings before Jamerson, but his additional confessions currently remain unverifiable.
111. Alfredo Prieto (~1984-2015, lethal injection): Prieto was both a serial killer of young women and a member of the Pomona Northside street gang. The mother and daughter pair were gang-raped, shot and stabbed together, but they managed to escape with their lives. Prieto was sentenced to death in both California and Virginia, but stayed in California’s San Quentin until his death warrant was signed in Virginia. He had also shot and injured 3 gang members over his suspicions of them sleeping with his wife, but was lightly sentenced due to the victims' gang affiliations.
112. Ricky Gray (~2005-2017, lethal injection): Gray and his similarly aged nephew murdered at least 9 people, which composed of a lone woman, 35 year old Treva Gray, and two entire families, the Harveys (consisting of parents, 49 year old Bryan and 39 year old Kathryn, and their daughters, 9 year old Stella and 4 year old Ruby), and the Baskerville-Tuckers (consisting of 21 year old Ashley, her 46 year old mother Mary, and Mary’s 55 year old husband Percyell) in a week long burglary spree. Almost all of the victims were tied up and gagged in their homes, and beaten to death with hammers or had their throats slit. Before she was killed by them with her parents, victim Ashley Baskerville had assisted Gray and his nephew in several of their robberies. The pair stole any items and valuables they could carry, and were reported to have taken money, computers, television sets, wedding rings, and even cookies. They were also linked to several non fatal assaults, one of which involved a 26 year old man being beaten into a coma.
113. William Morva (~2005-2017, lethal injection): Morva, a son of Hungarian immigrants, and an accomplice were arrested while trying rob a grocery store at gunpoint. While awaiting trial, he badly sprained his ankle and wrist in prison, and was transferred to the Montgomery Regional Hospital for treatment. He overpowered a deputy guarding him with a metal toilet-paper container, stole his gun, fatally shot Derrick McFarland, a 25 year old hospital security guard, and escaped. Morva then fled to Virginia Tech’s campus, and shot and killed 40 year old Eric Sutphin, one of the police officers chasing him.

2024.05.06 14:19 smallcapsteve Bird flu's wild range

A polar bear in the Arctic, red foxes in Europe, penguins in Antarctica and a wide range of other wild animals have been infected with the flu virus strain currently spreading in dairy cattle in the U.S.
Why it matters: Up to 75% of new and emerging infectious diseases in people come from animals, and most of those can be traced back to wildlife. Monitoring wild animals for diseases can help scientists identify emerging health threats.
Catch up quick: Outbreaks of avian flu in farmed poultry and wild birds started to increase around the world in 2020.
Now cows are being infected. (They become ill but recover with treatment).
The intrigue: "We’ve been seeing bird-to-mammal transmission events in a diversity of wild and domestic animals for about the last 4-5 years," Gillespie says.
Wild animals are in general thought to get the virus by eating an infected bird or being exposed to its feces.
But, "with wildlife it is really hard to know if mammal-to-mammal spread or individual events" because there is little surveillance, Gillespie says.

2024.05.04 19:34 gummiworms9005 Why Twisters (2024) Will Fail

Twister (1996) was far better than it had any right to be. There just are movies where, if you were to make them 100 times in alternate universes, they would fail 98 times. Here's why Twisters (2024), with a larger budget (adjusted), will fail to replicate that success:
  1. Likeable main characters: There was almost no one more likeable than 1990s Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. As a movie producer, if you had that, it would feel like a free win. Almost no effort was needed to make those characters relatable or likeable. Twisters (2024) doesn't have this free pass. It's possible they do it, but unlikely.
  2. Novel ideas: This was before the mainstream internet. Unless you were lucky enough to catch a news segment, or a Discovery channel special on storm chasers, you didn't know they existed. That added mystery and real adventure to the movie. Twisters (2024) doesn't have this.
  3. Special effects: The 1990s were a dividing line in the history of movies. There have always been special effects, but the game was taken to a whole new level in the 90s with the availability of good computers and software. I remember watching Jurassic Park (1993) in the theater. It wasn't impressive from a special effects angle just because they were great, it was also impressive because the idea of effects that good was a novel idea to theater goers. Twisters (2024) will likely have better effects, but they won't be new. You've seen it before.
  4. Quality acting: The level of talent on Twister (1996) was higher than you would expect. It wasn't just names you recognize, it was genuinely capable and experienced actors. Twisters (2024) may end up having good performances, but it just won't be comparable.

2024.05.03 01:17 Cool-Historian-6716 I JUST FINISHED SEASON 4 AND I AM NOT OK

I listened to the Q&A of season 3 is always good to get somethings close to right. It is also nice to learn about things I didn’t notice on my first round. Glad I am not the only one obsessed with Elias voice 😂
How am I in season 4 already? Also that trailer my sweet Martin. I am glad despite all he is still sweet.
I don’t know how many days/weeks have been since the mission. Have any of them tried reading statements aloud to him to make him better? Interesting that the non neutral record turned on.
OMG the dream guy! The one that predicted Gertrude’s death. And at the end of that episode John said that he hoped he would be warned beforehand. Also that sentient tape recorder.
He is fucking death? OMG 😱 JOHN NEEDS TO CHOOSE? 😭😭😭😭 but what will he become if he chooses to not give in to the end. Like what does it mean to give in fully to the eye?
Oh no spiders 😭😭😭 is this the season of the web isn’t it? 😭😭😭😭 but also why can the spider request something of someone related to the end?
How does this show just keep getting better and better
I love how much Georgie cares about John without it being implied she still has feelings for him. Just pure friendship, you only get angry at people you really care about
So we know Georgie has seen death. But maybe she is touched somehow. And that is why she can identify the avatar?
SIX MONTHS!!!???
Ohhhhh… is this about the lonely?
“Dusty old white men thinking about existence” 😂☠️ best definition of philosophy
Love how sutil it is how John changes as reading the statement is curing him almost.
“WHAT DID HE DO TO MARTIN?” The tone change in John!!!! I am sure many people in the fandom squealed at that
Yeah this is not just an emotional breakdown… there has to be something more going on
When Gerry talked about the Lucase’s he mentioned something about the lonely. If the other entities have taken notice of the beholding… and are attacking why would Elias appoint someone related to another entity? Now that I think about it on season 1 they mentioned they were patrons… why would they support the institute?
He said “THE ARCHIVIST” not “head archivist” subtle but probably important change
“Spindly” and website… spiders isn’t?
“Welcome to tory Britain” I love how they make obvious their social justice beliefs but in very subtle ways.
Omg that interaction with Martin was heartbreaking 😭
Leg surgery in the institute to save Melanie of a potential slaughter infected bullet was not on my bingo card
Martin talking to the tape recorders like they are pets 😭
LMAO the shade towards the archive having archivists with no knowledge how to archive. Though it is by now clear Gertrude disorganized on purpose.
Whatever Lukas told Martin must have been heavy to convince him isolating himself would be for the best
Also of course Elias wanted a ritual and the lonely said something about “FIRST” Lukas doesn’t seem to be referring to the Lonely ritual but more like winning against someone on this race. And I don’t know does it mean because Lukas thinks Elias was wrong he then is trying to make the lonely one happen quickly to beat someone else?
This thing about Lukas not being good with technology will be important later I think
WHAT IS HAPPENING
Lol the recorder did just appear put of nowhere 😂
They never found Daisy’s body… is that perchance the way Elias thinks he can help defend the institute?
“statement extracted from subject” ☠️
Is very interesting how this statement went through hundreds of years. And of course it did the had much detail because it most feel like that to someone who has lived that long.
Remember when in episode 1 John said he couldn’t stand Martin and he should be fired 😭 and now he is like “I miss you”
The thing about anchors is they seem to be tied to something sentimental. That italy episode the girl thought of her mother. The knife belonging to the grandfather. I am not saying it needs to be a romantic thing just saying it needs to matter. So what is John going to use?
The thing about the buried ritual sounds like the episode with the pit… is that the same?
John entering his pining emo era
I keep wondering how far had Gertrude gone into not being “human” or letting the beholding in… or was Gertrude like Bezira, someone that was able to stop all this because she was very resourceful and cold? Like this woman has stopped what…. 4 apocalypses? The buried, the spiral, flesh, also desolation???
Has John not noticed every time he tries to go at it alone it doesn’t go well? But this does show how different he is from Gertrude. Gertrude even sacrificed his own assistants. I am not sure John likes Daisy that much and he here he goes on his way of doing something incredibly stupid
Also don’t trust the web
The sound effects are so disturbing. Which I know is the point.
“the only way was to betray my trust and destroy any other sense of safety” ☠️
It was so hard to understand this episode because I am an ESL
Is all weird how now they are not friends with the spiral but less antagonistic? Lol 😂 apparently allies?
There was this mention that both Melanie and Martin fled. Melanie came back with the knife. Is this where Martin made the deal with the devil?
The static noise increased… and then John said “no need for that I am willing”
OBVIOUSLY SHE IS NOT OK JOHN FOR FUCKS SAKE
“Is this like all your other plans” ☠️☠️☠️☠️
Is very sort of precious when John asks for consent to use his powers
Another thing that will need some explaining is… once they started at the archives they couldn’t be fired or like leave for extended periods of time. But Melanie was being claimed by the slaughter and Daisy by the hunt. But they are connected to the beholding. So how does having connections with more than one work?
Specially both were claimed before getting to the institute but Martin started his connection to the lonely after
I need the archivist team to start bonding on therapy sessions not under traumatic circumstances 😂
But maybe John doing this will win some trust back from Bazira and Melanie
The tape recorders seem to have helped bring John back. Maybe the rib was not necessary 😂 at this stage the recorders are more meaningful to him than a rib so it makes sense
“police brutality lawsuit?” The way I laughed 🤣☠️ as someone who lives in the US I lived for that comment. John should be allowed to be funny more often
It is low key hilarious that the hunt loves the chase so much it won’t let it’s own ritual end
I love when John brings real history into the episodes
I will give Bazira a point. John was not there when they were attacked by the flesh. And now she is in charge of protecting everyone from another possible siege
“The future without us” new fear has entered the chat. I find this interesting because “the end” is almost like God like ending. Like God will end our world. And this is described as someone else will come to replace us. Less godlike I guess. Interesting critique of the hubris of humanity actually.
I said on my notes earlier that was not sure what people meant when they said John was a better archivist. Gertrude did have powers like this stament says but unclear then why John is allegedly better. Specially given Adelar just said she was gifted at the dream thing.
I love how Lukas has this static surrounding everytime he speaks. Is that because Martin is not fully allowing him in? Because the static happens with John when he resists his powers
GERTRUDE ALSO FREAKING STOPPED THE LONELY LOL That woman kept herself busy.
Also I WAS RIGHT MARTIN SOLD HIS SOUL FOR HELP
This is not a contradiction more like different information between two people
Basira said that she thought the Beholding was the only one that had not attempted the ritual and that is why the are being attacked.
Lukas said the web and then end, but didn’t mention the beholding
My guess is the discrepancy will become important later.
If the web doesn’t care about her ritual maybe that is why she wanted to help John wake up. But I don’t trust spiders
“Bullheaded archivist hell bent on self destruction” ☠️☠️☠️☠️
“Thankfully I did not agree to protect your friends from their own idiocy” ☠️☠️☠️☠️
OMG LUKAS HAS ME CACKLING “grubby jesus” “pet murderer” “this little soap opera you call an archive” ☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️
OMG MARTIN IS THE ONE WHO PILED THE TAPE RECORDERS I AM GOING TO CRY
FINALLY MANUELA’S SIDE OF THE WHOLE DAEDALUS
Reyna and Elias were FRIENDS WTF
This is a delightful way of merging the fear of dark with the way dark matter works scientifically. Like it did create a super philosophically interesting episode
Like again why should we trust Lucas when he was helping the dark before? So financed the darks attempts, finance the institute. A lot of cooperation from the lonely
I mean yes John was not great during the unknowing. Still why does the archivist have to do this and not Elias. Why didn’t Elias become the archivist then if he is so good at the beholding thing
Also why does Elias insists on Basira being a detective? Nothing Elias does seems to be random. Also I know he is so evil but still find his voice so sexy 😂
OMG the layers on this episode. Trying to put my thoughts in order.
Ohhh Anabelle Caine I had to go through my notes but she is the girl from the crazy psych experiment. Shivers spiders
Are John and Daisy becoming friends? 🥹
Looool calling him out and telling him to get over himself.
He really needed that though. Someone to show him some friendship. He used to he so insufferable at the beginning of the series and I have such a soft spot for him now
OMG Melanie she is so traumatized but the exchange with the therapist was funny.
“So tell me Melanie, what brings this irrational fear or recorders”
Something I just noticed… Gertrude never calla herself the archivist or head archivist. WHYYYY and yes took me too long to realize this. This woman puzzles me so much.
The 13 entities fighting each other to fonosh the ritual and destroying each other’s chances like petty siblings. Though the eye has stopped at least 4-5 of them. So is the eye just better at stopping them because it “can see”
The only other mention of someone else stopping one is the slaughter stopping the stranger.
Let’s go through the list and who has attempted a ritual based on what WE HAVE HEARD AS RECORD ON THE ARCHIVES
  1. The Beholding ❌
  2. The Desolation ✅ (Gertrude stopped)
  3. The Lonely ✅ (Gertrude stopped, also is the lonely ritual the one in the spaceship?)
  4. The Dark ✅ (or at least so far keeps trying)
  5. The Buried ✅ (Gertrude stopped)
  6. The Stranger ✅ (Team Archives stopped)
  7. The hunt ✅
  8. The end ❌
  9. The web❌
  10. The vast (I don’t remember this ritual mentioned yet) ❌
  11. The flesh ✅ (Gertrude stopped)
  12. The spiral ✅ (Gertrude stopped)
  13. The corruption (still unclear to me if what happened at the institute in S1 was the attempt at a ritual or we just know it has been attempted per Lucas’ comment)
  14. Extinction ⁉️
This bit of info about Gerry’s father is weird. I may have missed some info but ok so connection to the eye… maybe worked for the institute? How did he ended up partnering with with crazy Mary. Mary did say her mother worked for the institute though
This interaction was so interesting for many reasons.
  1. Elias is such a punchable asshole
  2. Elias speaking of the apocalypse like if it were an ex
  3. Seems like there is some sort of consent? That is expected when joining an entity. He said he cannot play mind games just hope Martin makes the right decision
  4. That also tells me that even though he says Lukas is saying the truth he doesn’t agree with how he wants to stop it
  5. Interesting that someone like the beholding took so long to accept extinction exists as their currency is knowledge
  6. Martin is trying to protect John and is being such an idiot about it but omg my queer heart
  7. Elias did give Lukas control of the institute, seems like they sort of respect each other. They certainly have an interesting dynamic and for sure there has to be more history behind them
Reyna has been alive for a long time… no reason why Magnus wouldn’t be right?
The institute built over the prison in an attempt to control the powers? Maybe that is what Lukas wants to do
There is a fanfic here about John listening to tapes made by Martin pouring his heart out to him
Sure let’s just DIY a prophet… like lmao
OK the hilltop road story now makes more sense. Seems partly Gertrude is to blame for binding Agnes to the tree if I understood correctly.
Their description of the hell that is raising a child is so accurate 😂
But also this side of the story is missing the tree being torn and how that affected all. But also what did Gertrude do besides the tree.
Also some mention about Gertrude having some protection?
You cannot convince me the answer is something about the feelings outside of fear. More than once empathy, or love or love coded anchors have saved the day.
“Every other avatar gets their feelings burned out of them but I need to sit in mine” talking about Martin AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH 😍😍😍
I loooooove when they include the history bits. This episode leaves me with more questions than answers though
Also the shade towards Newton ☠️
I really love John’s character development. In many ways he is a softer better person. But I love they are not shying away about how these powers corrupt or hurt others
Must be so frustrating to Martin that he sacrificed so much for John to make stupid decisions he cannot protect him from 😂
Something still missing here because, when they tried the ritual it was not the right eclipse according to Basira. In a past recording Gertrude said something about being more proactive. Did that meant maybe giving them bad intel about the eclipse and do something that triggered even if she was death? But I mean they had a literal astrophysicist in their team it doesn’t make sense they got the date wrong.
So the way John sees Helen has been interesting to me for sometime. He didn’t know her, it was just a woman that came to give a statement.
But I think in some way John took it personally that Michael took her from the Institute. Like an affront. Because he was always so angry when Michal said anything about her or after she became the spiral.
I also love how the spiral is chaotic af and was like maybe Michael was TOO CHAOTIC 😂 so now Helen is like a coworker? I mean I guess if the spiral cannot retry their ritual in many hundreds of years, it is in their best interest to stop the other entities from winning?
“leave me alone for good” the lonely is getting to him 😭😭😭 Martin
But Martin is choosing the lonely to protect others out of love because he has the biggest heart
BUT I DON’T WANT THE LONELY TO TAKE MARTIN. MARTIN ❤️ JOHN FOREVER
Gertrude is such a terrible person lol I am starting to feel Elias was justified
I know on the end of season 3 they were saying John was disappointing and Elias said so to. But John has been at this for barely 3 years I mean Gertrude must have been also maybe a little bit (not as much) of a mess at the beginning?
This is how you can tell I write and pause and write again 😂 Gertrude is 100% jaded
There is no way you can convince me to stop thinking that the web is like the most villanous of all
If does seems that John has only fed like that at his weakest.
Going to hilltop road is an incredibly stupid idea. I should go to sleep. Ir I end up doing one more I will keep continuing lol and I have to teach tomorrow
SHE SAID TO KEEP THINGS “ON TRACK” THE WEB HAS A MASTER PLAN THAT HAS NOT BEEN REVEALED. If they are trying to stop extinction this season does this make the web the big villain of the series?
Also Anabelle was a sociopath way before the web got to her. the worst villians are the parents that hate their children
“I don’t want to stop” did that she say addiction is one of the strongest forms of control?
Bazira kicking and punching Elias was so satisfying 😂
Daisy is still human though
“Talk to him” I am 100% sure wanted to cry because that felt like a knife to the heart
I feel a little called out 😂 I was like yeah yeah spooky statement BUT WHAT ABOUT METAPLOT AND THE NEXT EPISODE
Wait wait… are the medical students from season one related to the extinction?
John talked a lot about Martin to Melanie 🥹
If you know it is a risk everyone can have WHY DONT YOU GO AND KISS MARTIN YOU IDIOT
Something my brain just realized… some episodes ago Elias said Gertrude was very good at obfuscating things (or was it Lukas) not the spiral is confusion but without rhyme or reason. Obfuscation is purposeful, she even bought different types of labeling systems to make the archives disorganized. Leitner said that Elias killed her because she wanted to destroy the archives. But Arthur talked about her as if she really was super into the beholding. WHAT IF SHE CHANGED SIDES TO THE WEB AND THAT IS WHY ELIAS KILLED HER. That is why she was making a mess of things etc
Also I feel everyone is being so unfair to John (how I have come around)
Simon Fairchild! The awful dude of the vast
“I lost a bet” 😂☠️
I really like this guys voice and how he is characterizing Fairchild.
“Apocalyptic midwifery” 😂☠️
Ngl Fairchild makes some solid points
LMAO 🤣 Martin being like ARE YOU TELLING NONE OF YOU KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING 😂 “grand cosmic joke” indeed
“John found the tapes you made for him” 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 and he is just waiting for Martin to come to him! 😭😭😭😭😭
The entities feed on fear but also interesting how their servants/cultists are not afraid of that fear. They even sound loving of the harm they cause
Ok John just said exactly what I wrote above lol
John still sounds rational and like himself-ish. But one can say the same about Lukas, Fairchild or Elias. even Helen feels humanish (though less each time)
This convo with Helen got so philosophical lol
So before this podcast i never saw myself as a horror girly. I think is because I had just been exposed only to jump scare horror. But I have always been fascinated by cults. So I love how this is intersecting here
Yep I mean we all knew Julia and crazy vampire hunter would comeback eventually. If only the eye had warned John a little sooner
Daisy 😭😭 I don’t want to lose Daisy to the hunt.
John has become so caring to everyone his little monster heart has grown so much
I love the critique of the police and how they protect the bad ones
Ohhhh such an interesting twist. The eye trying hard to keep John away from some tapes. And John having strength to defy that
Now that I think about it what did John study at university?
We know the taperecorders are not neutral. Like if the archives really didn’t want this knowledge to be known eventually then why they didn’t stop recording? Because the eye couldn’t help itself on having such a good meal?
“Fuck” is the only way to react to the information about blinding yourself.
A way for “us to leave” “you and me… escape” 😭😭😭 this is the closest thing to confession of his love to Martin on tape.
I AM NOT OK! I AM NOT OK AFTER THIS EPISODE
If this is the rest of the season I won’t be able to take meaningful notes
Very hypocritical of Bazira to let Daisy hunt to keep her alive but being super angry at John for feeding
I knew where this was going but hope it wasn’t. As a mom this episode will haunt me
Good for you Melanie! I am guessing Georgie will take care of her
“I think I still care that he hears my voice” 😭😭 why is that breaking me
Has Martin really gone on the deep end or he is playing Lukas
I AM NOT DOING OK I am glad my teaching duties are over for the semester to have the time to binge finish this
A fucking pandemic? I just looked at the release date “October 10, 2019” ☠️☠️☠️☠️ no comments
“And no eyes may see you slumber”
I cannot believe I am saying this but he needs to go find Elias
How is Lukas saying stuff like “very good” to Martin sound so web like
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
“Watching over my institute” HOLY SHIT ELIAS IS MAGNUS
Gertrude chose to stay human that explains a lot actually
OMG OMG He cannot let John die Martin wont
Daisy 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 Bazira and Daisy love each other so much
“John came back so suddenly I had a reason” 🥹🥹🥹🥹
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK IS HAPPENING
John opening himself to follow the lonely is playing directly into what Elias wants
This cliffhanger should be illegal
“Tell me your story Peter Lukas” OH MY FUCKING GOD
A FUCKING BET A MOTHERFUCKING BET
AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH 🥹🥹🥹😭😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️❤️
OMG The banter between Martin and John ❤️❤️❤️
He sounds so fucking healthy and happy when starting to read the statement. With a smile on his face
I AM NOT OK! I AM NOT OK!
