They called themselves the Wide Awakes: one of America’s largest, weirdest and most consequential political organizations, now nearly forgotten. In Boston, many had escaped slavery. In St. Louis, many were radical German immigrants. In D.C., their rallies mixed Yankee federal clerks with sons of Southern families. In Connecticut, where they got started, they were working-class kids with shady political backstories. And in 1860, this diverse coalition of young Americans drew the line against slavery and help to elect Abraham Lincoln.
Their success can tell us a lot about cobbling together a coalition in a fractured, tribal, distrustful age.Clad in militaristic black capes, marching by torchlight through America’s cities, the Wide Awakes alarmed the Southern aristocracy of enslavers — which was exactly what they hoped to do. The movement drew its mammoth size and unnerving force from the resentment many Americans felt toward “Slave Power”: the wealthy planters who pushed to expand slavery and brutally suppressed opposition.
Started by a few kids barely old enough to vote in February 1860, the Wide Awakes were believed to be half a million strong by August of that year, with companies from Maine to California, Virginia to Kansas.
To understand how shocking this coalition was, we need to rethink the politics of antebellum America.
Instead of a nation split between the absolutes of Slavery and Freedom, most Americans fell somewhere on a spectrum between the two. Just 2 percent of the population in 1860 actually enslaved anyone, and those Americans trapped in slavery made up another 12 percent of the nation’s men, women and children. That left 86 percent of Americans who were neither enslavers nor enslaved. Some enthusiastically supported slavery, while others prayed for the practice to end. But most — especially among the large northern majority — found slavery distasteful while also objecting to what they saw as the radicalism of Abolition.
Caught in the middle, this majority bounced from party to party, explaining much of the tumult of mid-19th-century politics. Enslavers skillfully exploited the unsettled situation and spent the 1850s demanding more slave states, the right to keep enslaved people even in free states, the prohibition of speech and writing against slavery, and a requirement that free states assist in hunting fugitives.
This outsize influence was backed by real and threatened violence, from the plains of Kansas to the halls of Congress. “I have no objection to the liberty of speech,” sneered Alexander Stephens, the future vice president of the Confederacy, so long as “the liberty of the cudgel is free to combat it.”
The moderate majority began to feel as though slavery was at war with democracy, trampling upon their own rights along with the rights of the enslaved. Young people decided they’d had enough.
A gawky 19-year-old textile clerk, Edgar Yergason, started it all. “Fastidious” about his clothes, Eddie prepared for a torch-lit rally of the anti-slavery Republican Party on Feb. 25, 1860, by fashioning a shiny black cape to protect his new coat from dripping torch-oil. Yergason’s fellow clerks made capes, too. This oddly uniformed corps led a march through Hartford that night, while their friends beat back a mob of proslavery Democrats. Proud of their costumes and their fighting skills, Eddie’s friends met in a dingy third-floor apartment to formalize their association. After selecting a brawny 27-year-old leader for their “captain,” they cast about for a name. One fellow shouted: “Why not name it ‘Republican Wide Awakes?’” It was time that they wake up to the threat slavery posed to democracy.Their “army” of young civilians — clerks and farm boys and apprentice blacksmiths — spread from coast to coast. Uniting in “companies” drilled by “captains,” young people joined together, energized by this militaristic sense of awakening. In an age of rowdy, boozy politics, the Wide Awakes stood out for their stoic, silent midnight marches, not exactly fun but stirring and spectacular. In an age of chaos, their discipline sent a political message.

Lewis Hayden, who had escaped slavery in Kentucky, led a company of Black Wide Awakes in Boston in the same movement as the nastily racist Frank Blair Jr. in St. Louis. Some Wide Awakes were truly admirable, others quite distasteful, but all were united under Yergason’s cape design.
The Wide Awakes claimed to have “no warlike intentions,” but Democrats were skeptical. In the North, Democratic newspapers legitimately worried that “politico-military” clubs would mean “our elections will become pitched battles.” Across the South, panicked newspapers spread wild, violent rumors. One ex-governor told Virginians that they would soon be “cut to pieces by the Wide Awakes.”
On Election Day, club members woke up communities with 5 a.m. fireworks, then marched to the polls. Turnout was high: 81 percent. By the end of the day, Lincoln had won an unusual victory, taking nearly 60 percent of the electoral vote but less than 40 percent of the popular vote in a four-way race. This awkward mandate meant that for all the Republicans talk of “majority rule,” no one could really bring unity, or even basic agreement, in such a fractured land. But the Wide Awakes lit Lincoln’s plurality with torchlight, until the movement’s shadow loomed larger than the actual Republican Party.
Many agreed with the New York Tribune’s assessment that the Wide Awakes were “the most imposing, influential and potent political organization, which ever existed in this country.”
As the nation spiraled toward the Civil War, Wide Awake clubs armed as paramilitary forces, who did some of the first fighting in the conflict. And their members enlisted in huge numbers in the Union Army that finally killed slavery.
Today, progressive activists online sometimes name-check the Wide Awakes, styling them as woke heroes from the past. But they were really something more complex — and more thrilling: a genuine coalition of people who couldn’t agree on much but who marched side-by-side against the greatest threat to democracy.

Being totally true to the original game, we would actually add these a week and half into the game after everyone had just been making up their troop numbers. What follows is a slightly modified form of the rules that were on the original wiki.

We will be using simple 6 sided dies (d6), 3 sided dies (d3), and 5 sided dies (d5) to represent combat. We have a bot perform these rolls. The number of which will be decided like this
Final = Total of Dice + Bonus
Note: Half the Defense value is added to the total dice sides. So a defense rating of 6 would add 3 making a D6 a D9.
In this example let's assume the following rolls:
During a battle in the open field this usually means the losing side is routed or retreats. During a siege the battle will continue until either side gives in or runs out of troops.
Note: Tie Goes To the Defender
Determining Casualties
Causalities will be determined as follows:
For the smaller army the average of all d6 rolls will be averaged together (round normally). In the above example that would result in an average of 5 ((6 + 6 + 3) / 3) kill dice for side 2. This determines how many kill dice (d5s) will be rolled for enemy causalities.
For the larger army, the highest d6 rolls equal to the amount of the smaller armies rolls will be averaged. In the above example that would mean the 3 highest (6,6,5) rolls would be averaged together for a result of 5.67, rounded to 6. The larger army (side 1) will roll 6d5 kill dice.
These d5 represent the percentage of causalities the opposing side will suffer. The winner will receive a bonus to their kill results equal to the amount of points they win by (in this example 6).
18% x 1,000 = 180 troops out of the fight
13% x 500 = 65 troops out of the fight
What happens next
In an open field battle, the loser retreats and is run from the field. In a defense, another phase of battle will be run until either side gives in.
The mod running the battle will give a short blurb on what occurs in the fight. For this one, I would say something like:

2) Claiming
You can claim a holdfast and a house/faction, which will give you dominion over it's adjoining lands. For example; House Baratheon and Storm's End, or Vaes Dothrak and the Dothraki Sea. - When you claim, use the [CLAIM] tag and state the house and holdfast in your title, and then use the description to tell us what you want your style to be (e.g. Kingslayer, Lion of the Rock, Red Viper, Mother of Dragons).
- Once you claim a holdfast, we will do the best we can to quickly get it on the Claimed List. Remember, we fuck up too, so feel free to message the mods.
- You may abandon your holdfast at any point in the game and claim another one. However, you will only be able to do so again after 1 month.
- ORGANIZATIONS NOT MENTIONED IN THE LIST ARE NOT AVAILABLE CLAIMS. It doesn't matter if they exist in the ASOIAF universe, you cannot claim the Faceless Men or Sellsword Company #91238 if they're not listed.

- Once you claim a holdfast, we will make a wiki page for you. Make sure to include your title and , a brief description of your house, your prominent laws and regulations, and any alliances, or allegiances you have.

- Please update your wiki, it makes it easier when people want to find out about your house for alliances/fealty etc.
4) Etiquette
POSTSDO
- Use a tag: [CLAIM], [EVENT], [EXPANSION], [CONFLICT], [NEWS], or [META].
- Announce anything important, agreements, events, and make decrees. Celebrate or commiserate occasions, such as marriage contracts, welcoming a new sworn sword, mourning a death, completing construction, weddings, funerals, etc.
- Be stupid. Play the game of thrones, be patient, forge alliances, and don't unveil your moves until it's too late. Open war is not always the most feasible option. .
5) Duel
[DUEL] will be used for starting duels. A duel will consist of a 1v1 battle between two characters. Each belligerent will post a role playing story of the last few minutes before the fight begins. The "home team" gets to make the first post so they can describe the location of the duel. The stories will be voted upon and the post with the most upvotes (not overall score because we're ignoring downvotes) will win. The winner will then post a [DUEL - RESOLVED] post that describes the fight. If a stories score doubles (minimum winner score 4) the other's the winner may kill the loser. Otherwise, all duels end with a capture or injury.6) Conflict
It is natural that houses will wish to attack other houses for land and resources, or simply to keep things interesting. This is fine, but it is wise to consider diplomacy before calling the banners.How do I create a Conflict?
- Make a post using the [Conflict - Rally] tag declaring that you are rallying your allies. This step will be used for a lord to call his allies to rally on him for a coming battle. Any lords that wish to participate in a coming battle must respond to this post (with the amount of troops rallied) in order to be counted in the battle. Any forces that were loaned to a lord by an [Event] post can be rallied by the loanee. The opposing side in the conflict should create their own rally post. You can still choose to stand down from a rally.
[Conflict - Rally] The Riverlands call forth their banners against the false King!
- If you wish to betray those who think you allies, Rally as normal for your supposed allies. Then send a message to the moderators with a [Conflict - Betrayal] tag. The mod will take your forces into account on the correct side.
- When at least 24 IRL hours have passed since one of the Rallies, you may then commit your forces using a [CONFLICT - COMMIT]. This signals the attack; defenders can not commit. This sets the number of troops that will be on each side to whomever has rallied on each side. If one side does not create a Rally post it is assumed that they use their full local forces (i.e. those still in the holdfast). A mod will then create the next post.
[CONFLICT-COMMIT] MyHouse attacks ThatHouse
- If you wish to retire from the field (i.e. if diplomacy succeeds or if you do not want to do battle), please create a [Rally - Release] post. This will count as your troops leaving the field, and neither army will be able to attack after that post has been made. Of course, if you retreat while defending a holdfast, the attackers can freely take it.
How does a conflict end?
- Whichever team of countries has the most points from battles wins. If the loser does not surrender then the battle continues. If the conflict lasts for the full 6 days IRL, then the loser must agree to a fully unconditional surrender.
- Another way for a conflict to end is if the attacker calls off the conflict or if the holdfast invaded surrenders or they both come up with a peaceful treaty to end the war.
What happens after a Conflict where a winner is declared at the end?
- The losing ruler has two options:

6) Expansion
General Guidelines
Because we recognize the reality that houses are going to want to annex unclaimed holdfasts for more land, we are making imperialism to a certain degree allowed.- YOU CANNOT ANNEX WHOLE COUNTRIES! This doesn't include small islands. We will only allow territories or regions, like Winterfell taking White Harbour.
- Small regions are eligible for imperialism, but if your annexation of territory starts to become unreasonable, we will force you to renounce your annexation or just delete your post. Please try to keep it to a reasonable size.
- If you claimed a small region at first and want to annex another, message the mods. We will evaluate your request and see if you can take control of another small area.
- If you try to claim the entire North, you are going to have a bad time! Be reasonable and realistic, only take over small regions.
- Any region that is under the control of a claimed holdfast (read: imperialized) cannot be taken over by someone else.
- If you win a war against a house with imperialized territories, the conflict rules apply to the territories as well (refer back to War).
- Abandoned/revoked holdfasts belong to the liege lord. If no new player tries to claim them in 3 days, the liege lord is free to give them away. If there's no liege lord, the city/castle will become available in the claim list.
How to Imperialize
If you are declaring an annexation, use the tag [EXPANSION]. We will also put a list in the wiki of Annexed Territories. This is how you should go through your annexation:1) [EXPANSION] House A will be sending delegates over to Holdfast X to discuss fealty.
- Put the proposed terms of your annexation as well as an explanation for it
- Describe any changes to the region annexed.
7) Mod-Injected Crises
- Every now and then, because we are bored, we will make up a realistic crisis with a [CRISIS] tag. This can be an economic recession, natural disaster, or a magical threat.
- Each faction is encouraged to react to the crisis in the comments. You can say what your house is doing for recovery, if it will provide aid, how it affected you, etc.
8) Money
Please just be realistic. We aren't going to place limits because we want you guys to have fun, but if you donate 40 trillion gold dragons then obviously we will not allow it. Be aware of your house's economic situation, and just be realistic.9) Inactivity
- To make sure houses don't become dormant, we will be enforcing active participation.
- TO BE CONSIDERED ACTIVE YOU MUST MAKE AT LEAST ONE [EVENT] PER WEEK
- You must also participate in News Days and post your [News] on Sundays
- If you fail to do so and it comes to our attention, then you will be given 1 day's notice before we default your house.
Land Combat Rules
Thanks /Westerospowers for the original draft. This system is in effect as of right now.Starting a Conflict
- Normally all conflicts must begin with a [CONFLICT - RALLY] post. This post represents a host bringing their forces together for a fight. Normally at least 12 IRL hours must pass before a commit post is made.
- If the two sides agree, or if a mod makes a ruling, you may skip straight to the commit phase.
- The [CONFLICT - COMMIT] post indicates that the attack has been launched by the poster.
- The mods will then make a [CONFLICT-SCORE] post ASAP. This conflict score post will use the below rules to declare a victor.

I am new to online dating, and really dating in general after a 12 yr marriage. How does google voice work? I signed up for a number, and texts come to my email. If I respond to the texts in my email, does it show them as coming from the phone number or my email? Does the recipient know I am using google voice? What is the practical protocol here? I would rather not give out my actual phone number or other identifying information until I have met someone in public (and in a very public place... like a coffee shop next to a police station or something).
Also, the spelling on my first name is somewhat distinctive and I don't generally care for any of the nicknames. Would you be offended if you learned later that someone had not given their true first name? I would likely use a middle name, plausible nickname or an alternate spelling... not a complete fabrication, but not what I would want to be called in a long term relationship.

I know it’s dumb and everyone says high school relationships never work out but I real thought he was “the one.” He treats me well, his family is nice, we spend every weekend together, spends money on me, have a lot in common regarding our interests and the future. But there’s a lot of things I’m unsure about.
A little background: We go to the same tech school, same grade, same shop so we have one week where we spend every day together and another week with a few classes together a day. We live in different cities but still spend time almost every weekend and have been together almost 10 months. My parents like him and his parents like me.
But there’s a lot of things that bother me and I just don’t know if I’m crazy for feeling the way I feel. I’m just gonna list some things that felt off to me and I just want some advice on what to do. I feel like he’s controlling and extremely jealous and even though we’ve talked about it all of the talks end in either me being too sensitive or 100% wrong, us just having different opinions on something, or a different talk where we’re “working our flaws out.”

He was my first kiss, my first relationship, and we lost our virginities to each other. I’m emotionally attached to him and would lose too much if we broke up. The other issue is that we’re in the same shop and have a few classes together. If it does end it’ll be really bad to still have to see him every single day for another entire year. My also parents work at the school we go to and I’m also one of the top students in my school. My biggest worry is that he’d try and ruin their or my reputation. I don’t think he would but I don’t want to risk it. I also don’t know what the future holds. What if he really is “the one” and I can never find someone better than him. Some of my friends I had been friends with since I was 12 and were online friends that I just played video games with every once in a while. Another group was cut off for a similar reason, but he gave me the choice to “do what I felt was right” so I didn’t block them after he suggested it and told me to do what I felt. The next day he saw on my phone I didn’t block them and became absolutely livid with me and upset that I don’t know what the right choice is and that I’d want to have other guys in my life.
- One time his friends came over his house and I was supposed to meet them and try to become friends with them. I met them, talked to some of them and one of his friends and I had a lot in common so he asked for my number and I gave it to him since he was my bfs friend and my bf said to try and make friends. When my bf found out about it he became really upset, accused me of “liking” his friend, told me that he couldn’t trust me anymore, accused me of possibly cheating on him in the future if “that’s the way I act with guys” and became extremely upset. He still brings this situation up when he says he can’t fully trust me and it’s just brought a lot of issues. I thought it would be okay since he said to become friends with his friends but apparently not.

The guy that fixes it used to like it but I’ve always shut him down and he hasn’t tried talking to me in over a year. - (The situation that’s made me rethink a lot of things) We went to prom together. Right before prom he had a conversation with me talking about how if I ever won prom queen I shouldn’t accept it because it would be wrong of me to be crowned with another guy next to me. He said he would do the same and never accept it if he got crowned since it was the “right thing to do.” Prom came around, we went together, he kept leaving me to be with his friends which upset me because I have no other friends that go to my school and I went with him, but they’re his friends so I let it be. I asked him multiple times if he wanted to dance but he’d say no and run off to his friends. He’d say I was in a bad mood and acting off whenever he came back to check in on me and would just tell me I’m being weird then leave again. I had a terrible night alone and hr decided he wanted to leave. As we were leaving they announced the prom royalty and he won! Woo! Good for him, I was happy he won but also upset at him. I’m a social worker lcsw supervisee stuck in a rut. I work for a community service board that is outdated and aggressively resists modernizing anything. Practically no training. Went weeks without supervision due to being called in for crisis or I was forced to cancel to complete assessments despite others colleagues were available. Lack of professional advice or development. Generic advise. Takes months to receive feedback. Demoted for lack of therapy skills. Gee I wonder why? On top of that my supervisor is refusing to sign off on hours due to office politics and toxic work environment (forced by director).
This is my first job out of grad school (12 years BSW experience). I feel like I walked across the stage graduating with my MSW yesterday after 2 years of working here. That being said I am in the process of interviewing. No clue if I can fight to get my 72 hours and looking into options to get them. But also prepared to start over.

I grew up in a secular household. During my first summer vacation being at home rather than day care I decided to spend it researching various different religions before broadband existed, on my dial-up America Online Internet. I also tried Unitarian Universalism. Out of any religion that has ever existed, UUism really does feel like a choice. However, my politics does not align with theirs, and after I moved out of the city, lost interest. I don't own a car and getting to the church would now take over an hour to do. There is the Church of the Larger Fellowship who connect online and I could partake in that, but after listening to several sermons online about their apathetic nature to theology, and the lack of enthusiasm my Chalice Circle had to talking about religious topics, I lost my interest in the religion and I don't think I have a choice to go back because I would be forcing myself to do something I don't want to do.
I'm still a declared Baha'i and UU and get magazines from both religions in the mail, but at this point I don't consider myself a member of either. Or if I am I am a lapsed member. My point is, before I found Earthseed I found these religions and they sounded good on paper to me, which was the reason why I decided to follow and try to practice them, but for one reason or another, felt like I was denying myself for who I really was. For the Baha'i Faith I was denying my basic theology and for UUism I was denying the fact that my family and I identify and lean more into conservativism and Republicanism.
So my question is, after explaining this short story is, do we actually have a choice as to what religion we can be? I know there are people who can self-deny and compartmentalize themselves to fit in the mold of basically any religion that offers the most support for them. My best friend does this exceptionally well in fact. But I'm not the kind of person who can do that. I can't be of a certain religion unless I consider myself orthodox to the other members and the only religion my views align with is Earthseed.
But did I really choose my own beliefs? Did you choose your own beliefs? Do people in general choose their beliefs, or are their beliefs given to them by their parents or environment? As my parents never really spoke to me about these issues and don't really have much of an opinion on them I was raised in secularism and honestly even with the religion I am orthodox to, I still live a secular lifestyle. My parents themselves are ex-Catholic atheists and gave me the time to allow me to explore my own beliefs. And there have been conversations with them that I've influenced them, as much as they don't like to admit it.
But really think about it. You're born and raised in a religion or not. You exist somewhere where certain churches are closer to you. No matter how creative or logical you can be, your brain cannot understand the whole picture going on, no matter how you research religion on the Internet. And your experiences you live through will over time shape your thoughts and feelings on the matter. Does anyone ever honestly have an unbiased choice when deciding which religion they follow? Is there such a thing as an unbiased choice regarding religion?
It literally took me over a decade of research and I had to broaden my research deeply to find out about Earthseed. Even though I was in my 30s by the time I found it, I firmly consider myself a believer of it since I was 14, because in The Parable of the Sower I came to the same conclusions the protagonist did when she was forming Earthseed. Which is three main things: process theology, syntheism and cosmism. The Baha'i Faith simply doesn't believe that, the Unitarians don't focus on it, and I feel like even though I had called myself agnostic for a long time, this religion, albeit fictional in nature, is the closest I've come to believing in an orthodox creed.
But do I, and by extension we, actually have the capability of making that choice or are we just a product of our environment and experiences? Is there an inherent bias to every religious belief that we're influenced by? Does free will truly exist when deciding a religion?

As the Sacrifice for the sins of the world had not yet been carried out, Old Testament history continued, the entire meaning of which consisted in waiting and preparation to meet the coming Savior. Messianic expectations were particularly pronounced during the last decades before the arrival of the Savior into the world. People not only in Jerusalem, but also in other cities and villages of Palestine, waited for the Messiah foretold in the Holy Scripture. Christ and the Pharisees Time was fulfilled. The Messiah came, but Jewish leaders, Pharisees, and Sadducees condemned him to death. But why were the Pharisees, Sadducees, and scribes offended? Why was it enough for the Samaritan woman to reveal the secret side of her life for her to gladly believe that the traveler standing beside her, weary from the road and asking her for water, was Christ (see John 4:42)? Why did the Pharisees and scribes, who were witnesses to the magnificent miracles performed by Jesus and knew the Scriptures better than anyone else, stubbornly refuse to recognize Christ? Finally, one more question: why did they hate Him, despite the fact that he delivered many people from terrible disease and suffering? The answer must be sought in the peculiarities and character of the spiritual life of the leaders of Israel. Religious life demands of a person self-attentiveness, moral sensitivity, humility, and pure intentions. Without this, the heart gradually hardens. A change inevitably occurs, the consequences of which are spiritual death. Already before the beginning of our Savior’s Gospel of the Heavenly Kingdom, the Jews had begun to imagine the Messiah as a powerful earthly king, who would exalt them above all nations and make them wealthy and powerful. This concept of the Messiah corresponded to their spiritual and moral condition. For a proper understanding of the prophecy inspired by the Holy Spirit, not doctrinal erudition, but pure, uncorrupted faith was necessary. The consciousness of lawyers and scribes, corrupted by sin, did not notice the parts of the Old Testament in which the spiritual qualities of the promised Messiah are given: "behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass" (Zech. 9:9); " Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth" (Isa. 42:1-3; cf.: Matt. 12:20). Despite all the seemingly multifaceted events preceding the trial of the Savior of the world, there is only one reason for such a grave sin to have been committed—the people were rooted in sin and loved it. They seethed with anger at He who had come to the world to conquer and destroy sin. After Christ the Messiah, who came to save the world, was slandered, profaned, and put to death, the spiritual death of the chosen people began. The Lord Jesus Christ spoke to the Hebrews directly, "He that hateth me hateth my Father also" (John 15:23). This means that the monotheism of the Hebrew leaders became entirely formalistic. In literature, Old Testament religion, which ends with the conclusion of the New Testament, and Judaism, are often confused. This association is completely wrong. The expectation of the Messiah, which permeated the centuries-long history of the religion of the descendants of the Prophet Moses, ended. The goals and aspirations of the Hebrews, led by the Pharisees and Sadducees, stayed on Earth. Earthly well-being, wealth, success, and power became core values. In keeping with these, they imagined the anticipated Messiah. However, the prophets foretold the coming of another Messiah—the Suffering Messiah. The Prophet Isaiah, who is called the "Old Testament Evangelist" (see Saint Jerome, Letter to Paulinus) because of his many prophesies and the precision of their fulfillment in Jesus Christ, speaks about this with impressive clarity and precision. What then is the true Messiah? "He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth… for the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand" (Isa. 53:7-10). Were the Jews familiar with this chapter of the great prophet? Not all of them. Usually during weekly readings at the synagogue this chapter is omitted. Here is an excerpt from the memoirs of Rosa Price, who survived the horrors of several Nazi concentration camps and accepted Jesus Christ. Her daughter became a follower of the Savior Jesus, but she adhered to old misconceptions. "I ran to the rabbi. He would tell me different Scriptures with which to challenge my family. In response, they would give me five more. At the urging of my family, I asked the rabbi about Isaiah 53. He said, “No Jew reads that, especially not a Jewish woman.” So I couldn’t read it. The same for Psalm 22. There are 328 prophecies of the coming of the suffering servant Messiah. I asked the rabbi about almost all of them. Finally, the rabbi told me not to come to the synagogue anymore because I had read him Isaiah 53" (Rosa Price. The Survivor // Sid Roth. They Thought for Themselves. WWP, 2007). How did the lawyers, who knew many parts of the Old Testament Bible by heart, explain the chapter? In the period of the Talmud's formation, the scribes recognized that the 53rd chapter was a prophecy of the Messiah's coming. However, beginning with the famed Hebrew exegete Rashi (Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki; 1040 - 1105), rabbis assert that the 53rd chapter speaks of the Jewish people. A simple reference to the text can refute this belief.
The Forerunner of the coming of the Messiah is also mentioned in the Old Testament. "Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts" (Mal. 3:1). Dwellers in Palestine knew the Holy Scripture and saw in John, who preached repentance, the Angel of the Covenant predicted by the prophets. Thus, people from all of Jerusalem and all the outskirts of the Jordan came to him (see Mark 1:5). In the holy books of the Old Testament, there are prophecies of all of the main events in the life of Jesus the Messiah. The prophet Micah identified the place of birth: "But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting" (Mic. 5:2). The Word of God demonstrated the great spiritual gifts of the future Anointed One. "And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord" (Isa. 11:1-2). All of this was fulfilled by Jesus: "... the people were astonished at his doctrine: For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes" (Matt. 7:28-29). Through the prophets, the Holy Spirit indicated a special distinguishing feature of the Messiah, the extraordinary power of wonderworking: "He will come and save you. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert" (Isa. 35:4-6). When the two men came to Jesus from John the Baptist to ask, "Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?" (Luke 7:20), the Lord before all else points to the miracles he has performed: "The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me" (Luke 7:22-23). The people knew that the Messiah would be characterized by the miracles he performed. "Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?” (Matt. 12:22-23). A mind corrupted by sin could not notice the parts of the Old Testament in which the spiritual qualities of the promised Messiah are given: "Behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass" (Zech. 9:9).
What is this "central pillar" of Judaism? I will introduce an excerpt from the Tract Sabbath, with commentary from Rabbi Pinchas Kehati: "The cripple may go out with his wooden leg; such is the decree of Rabbi Meir, but Rabbi Jose prohibits it. If the wooden leg has a receptacle for pads, it is subject to defilement. Crutches are subject to defilement by being sat or trodden upon; but one may go out with them on Sabbath and enter the outer court (of the Temple). The chair and crutches of a paralytic are subject to defilement, and one must not go out with them on the Sabbath nor enter the outer court (of the Temple). Stilts are not subject to defilement, but nevertheless one must not go out with them on Sabbath." Commentary: "The cripple, a man with one amputated leg, may go out on the Sabbath on his wooden leg, an artificial leg, made according to the size of his shin. Such is the decree of Rabbi Meir, who believes that an artificial leg corresponds to footwear, while Rabbi Jose forbids the cripple from going out with his wooden leg on the Sabbath. According to him, it does not correspond to footwear because the cripple stands primarily with his hands on a cane, while the artificial leg is only for appearance's sake so that his physical handicap would go unnoticed. Thus, the artificial leg on Sabbath is seen as an unnecessary load, and it is prohibited to enter with it. According to the other point of view, Rabbi Jose agrees that the artificial leg equates to footwear, however he is afraid that the man will detach it and will carry over 4 cubits into the public domain, but Rabbi Meir does not have this fear.” I risk fatiguing the reader, but I will introduce one more place from the Talmud to fully portray the spiritual deadness of ritualism. “There are two acts constituting the transfer (of things which are prohibited) on the Sabbath, which are in turn subdivided into four for a man who finds himself inside a private domain (reshut hayachid). The two acts are, however, increased to four for a man who finds himself outside in the public domain (reshut harabim). How so? For example, a mendicant stands outside (in reshut harabim) and the master of a house inside (in reshut hayachid). The mendicant passes his hand into the house (through for example a window) and puts something into the hand of the master (let's say a basket, so that he might give him a piece of bread), or (another variation) the mendicant reaches out and takes something from the master's hand (a piece of bread). In these two cases, the mendicant is breaking the law of the Sabbath, but the host is not. Or, if the master of the house (being inside) passes his hand through a window and puts, say, a piece of bread, into the hand of the mendicant, or, having put out his hand, he takes an object (a basket) from the hands of the mendicant, who is standing outside on the street, and brings it into the house, the master of the house would have broken the law of the Sabbath, but not the mendicant. This is the first part of the Mishna, which has demonstrated to us what the “two acts” of transferring objects mean, from the position of one who is inside, and from the position of one who finds himself outside. Carrying out any of these acts on the Sabbath is prohibited" (Tract Sabbath).[1] Instead of a living faith in a merciful God and love towards one’s fellow man, entire volumes of the Talmud are filled with the sophistic disputes of various rabbinical schools over what to do with an egg laid by a chicken on the Sabbath, or about a host giving bread to a beggar, so that he does not break the Sabbath. What a huge spiritual distance there was between the prophets and the scribes! The first to shine in the faith were those who participated in the source of heavenly wisdom, while others directed their extraordinary erudition to "solving" questions irrelevant to life. The lawyers occasionally thrashed out whether one may move a ladder from one dovecote to another on feast days. It is obvious that religious life, in which ritualism is the determining principle, will become formalistic. "Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men" (Isa. 29:13). Falling away from the living source of Truth will inevitably lead to dissolution and barrenness. In medieval European church art, the contrast between Christianity and Judaism was allegorically represented in the form of two female figures: the Church and the Synagogue. The south portal of the transept (cross aisle) of the cathedral in Strasbourg (approx. 1230) is decorated with such sculptures. The woman representing the Church, clearly and confidently carries a cross in her right hand as if resting on it. The straight folds of her cloak, flowing down to the ground, make her figure solid and firm. Her head is crowned. Her gaze is cast into the distance. The figure of the synagogue holds to her body a spear broken in several places. The bend of the figure repeats the broken line. Scrolls fall out of her left hand. Her head is downcast. Her eyes are blindfolded, a symbol of spiritual darkness.

Through his emanations (flows) the ten sefirot come into being, which are the attributes of God. Ten sefirot represent the mystical body of Adam Kadmon (heavenly Adam). He appears as a result of emanation and has no image or form. The earthly Adam was created in the image of heavenly Adam. The tenth sefirot is called "the Kingdom" or Malkuth. It unites all ten sefirot. In Zohar, Malkuth—or Kingdom—denotes how the Knesset (assembly) of Israel is a mystical prototype of the House of Israel (Shekhinah). What is everyone’s choice of laptop for editing? I currently film on a DJI action 4 and iPhone 15 all 4k footage.
Premier pro is the software I use to edit 15-30 minute YouTube videos. Text on screen and some light edits.
I’m looking for a new laptop and I am torn between the MacBook pro’s.
The cheapest (£1700) 👀 is of course very appealing but would this spec be enough?

So I ordered an iPhone 14 Pro from straight talk on 5/12/24, from their website. The UPS tracking number they gave me isn’t correct (I even copied and pasted it directly into the UPS website to make sure I didn’t make a mistake), so tracking it is out of the question.
I got on their website chat today thinking maybe I could get this sorted out. They couldn’t answer my question via chat, and had customer service to call me. When I was on the phone with their agent, they just hung up on me. So I now I’m just pissed at this whole thing. Now I want a refund and I’ll just get a phone from a physical store. So I get back on their chat, and let them know I’m fed up and I realize I’m probably not likely to actually receive this phone because no one knows where it is and it should have arrived by now, so no I need a refund. They said they would have customer service to call me to process the refund. I’ve been waiting for about an hour and I realize that customer service is not calling me back and I don’t want to start this process all over again just to get even more run around. Is there a specific number I can call to get an US - based straight talk agent that can process my refund, or should I just consider this a loss on a missing package and straight talk isn’t likely to give me a refund?
One thing I’ve learned: DO NOT ORDER ANYTHING ONLINE FROM STRAIGHT TALK. Anyone is better off just picking up a physical phone directly from Walmart than going through this whole mess. This is awful and I’m having a panic attack at the thought of losing $960 on a phone I’m not going to receive.

The only place on the river that I absolutely know we canoed by was the Langford Hot Springs. We also visited Langtry, but I'm not sure if that was driving or from the river. We also went through at least one canyon--the water was very low, and it was littered with huge boulders, but I cannot tell you which of the canyons I'm remembering. It might even be the lower canyon trip--my father was always up for any challenge to the point of foolhardiness. This was a large opening, but was not deep and "rock shelter" or grotto is probably a better tern for it. We decided to explore, and discovered that this was a spot visited by many modern people; it was littered with cigarette butts and food wrappers, etc. As it didn't go back very far, we looked around a minute and decided to go back to the boat. Before we did, though, my father noticed an outcropping far enough above his head (he was about 5'11'') that he had to stand on tiptoes to reach up to it. He felt something, and this is what he brought down. Shamefully, we took it without question. I cannot say if we were at that point in Big Bend National Park itself or on the river outside that area. I am not even able to say if we were on the US or Mexico side, but I believe we were in the United States. Despite us taking this, he was generally a leave no trace guy to extremes and not into breaking border laws. My father died last month after a battle with dementia, and this was the only thing I wished to have from him--we had become estranged for many years and had started speaking again about 5 years ago. He was a character. An extremely charismatic narcissist, he estranged both of his children but in his dementia, he had softened and I enjoyed getting closer to him again. All of this is to say that he was never a prankster, he never gave me a hint that my memory of the event was different from his while we were still talking, and my stepmother tells me that he loved to tell the story and *absolutely* believed this to be a genuine artifact. I have contacted the park and am working on my next steps here. I do not want (well, I WANT, but I won't) to keep something that belongs either with a First Nations group or an organization that will care for and display this. Here's the issue though. Is it actually an artifact or a more modern example of the art? I will present my research for and against. I am so far from expert its ridiculous, but I have a Google degree at this point about this point, so I've done all I can, and I decided to come to people who are passionate about these things. For: --This seems to be Edwards chert--I feel really pretty certain on that. So the stone it's made of isn't out of place for the area. --I have attempted to find out if it was common to sort of geo cache or prank with artifacts in the 70s, and I have found out about "Gray Ghosts," but I haven't managed to find one word about people leaving their work in places for strangers to find. I am very interested in this topic, but for now, I'm putting this lack of evidence I have for this practice in the "for" column. --In both the for and against column is that it is so distinctive. It resembles several kinds of projectile points, but doesn't just scream "this is X." If it looked like one thing, it was as much as twice the size of other examples of that. Or it was half a continent away from other projectile points of a similar style. I have considered Darl, Zorra, Pontchartrain Type II, and especially Scottsbluff Type II. The whole field is so interesting and people are muddying things, it seems to me, and one thing may be called several names by different people, and of course we haven't discovered every point there is, and that area of the world, the Trans-Pecos and Big Bend, still have lots of secrets for us. I’ve rented a house for years but I’m looking into an apartment before a home purchase. I was surprised when I saw the different lease lengths offered with different rates online, since the last time I was in an apartment it was the standard 3, 6, or 12 months only.
There’s no telling when said house will actually be purchased(considering the real estate market is bonkers) I really wouldn’t want to break a lease if some lucky break pops up, so is “home buyers clause” a thing here? And if so, are they common practice or only some places offer them? (They’re very common in some states with military especially).
Basically an addendum that allows you to terminate the lease early due to purchasing a home and the fee is usually quite cheaper than actually breaking a lease. It doesn’t go on your record as a broken lease either.

It is with great pleasure for me to say that I have completed the current works of the Cosmere*.
After going into a Sci-Fi deep dive I pivoted into fantasy by reading A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms by George RR Martin. It reignited my love for fantasy, and I highly recommend it. This led me to the works of Mr. Sanderson.
The Way of Kings was the first book I read of the new year and Yumi and the Nightmare Painter was the last, finished this morning. I have also read 14 other books scattered in between the works of the Cosmere in order to mentally space out the different works/series.
Before I start my rankings I just want to say that The Stormlight Archive DEEPLY impacted me. Specifically Dalinar. I'm actually tearing up writing this. The way that he pushed through his trials to emerge as Bondsmith was truly inspirational to me. It had me questioning how I can live my life with more honor (THE CODES) and integrity, and how I can hold true to my ideals in times of scrutiny and challenge.
When I describe the appeal of The Stormlight Archive to people I say "the characters make me want to be a better person".
Without further ado here is my ranking list:

-If you're a Goodreads ranker like I am here's some insight: The only 5 stars I gave were to TWoK and OB. Everything else was a 3 or 4 star except for Allomancer Jak which I gave 2.
-Warbreaker blew me away. I was totally not expecting it to be in the top when I picked it up. It was just FUN! The colors, the names, the opulence, the tropical city, the iridescence! What fun & beauty! The story had a quality of a fairy tale and I was hooked.
-Sanderson is a damn good Novella writer. Based on the quality of some of the shorter works it surprises me that Edgedancer and Dawnshard didn't land for me. They felt like filler chapters to the rest of the SA. I was specifically disappointed with Edgedancer. I felt like there was so much low hanging fruit to get into with Lift and instead we were caught with her in a time of questioning and meandering, with some action. I wanted stories of heists, looting, and shenanigans and I felt like I didn't get that.
-I think the most contentious position I have about the Cosmere is how painful I found some parts of Mistborn Era 1 to be. I will say that Mistborn has some of the strongest elements of the Cosmere. It has my favorite magic system, the best setting (gothic Luthadel, the ash apocalypse), some of the strongest villains (Steel Inquisitors, Koloss, The Lord Ruler), and one of the best Sanderlanches (HoA). However, at times I found the story so painful I almost had to put it down.
First, I was not able connect with Vin and Elend. Part of me rationalizes this that Sanderson didn't want me to intimately connect with them because they become beings of the highest lore/religion on Scadrial. I found Elend to be a very shallow, almost insignificant character. His development from spoiled boy, to ruler, to legend just didn't sit well with me.
Vin was one of my biggest challenges. To this day I cannot visualize Vin's face in my mind. I had trouble visualizing a couple characters across the Cosmere. It took me a long time to come up with a stable mental image of Navani. But I was never able to get it with Vin. Vin is a collection of conflicting attributes that never came together for me. Shy, but can tell it how it is. Secretly loves luxury, but hates intellectualism. Legend, but street urchin. I recognize most people love Vin, and I wish I was one of them, but I'm not.
Second, I had problems with the storylines. It's hard for me to explain this but I felt like the plot throughout Mistborn Era 1 were the wrong stories to focus on. Like why focus on the politics of Elend's crumbling government when there are so many other wonderful and exciting things that were probably going on on Scadrial? Well of Ascension was almost a DNF for me because of how much I simply detested the story. The Sanderlanche at the end was good but man was that first half absolutely painful. It hurt me to read. In the end I'm glad I stuck it out because Hero of Ages was truly masterful. But for me that beauty came at a cost.
*I have not read White Sand. I do not connect with graphic novels or audiobooks and will not slog through one (especially one that large and not highly reviewed) for the sake of being an active completionist. I felt very conflicted in coming to this conclusion. Especially because of how frequently Taldain/Khriss are referenced in the rest of the works. What ultimately what led me to this decision is the upcoming rework of the prose edition of the story, for which I am very excited for.

Couple seasons now getting back into golf and I'm really tracking my strokes so I can focus on weak areas. Check my understanding of rules for a couple scenarios I find myself in at home. These aren't tournament scenarios but I want to treat them as such:
Scenario 1. Slice out of bounds. Off the tee box on the right of the fairway are white OB stakes (there's a neighborhood). I see my ball, it's in someone's yard. I CAN pick up my ball and drop it back in bounds for TWO strokes (hitting fourth shot from here). Or, I can go back to the tee box and hit my third shot (stroke and distance). I guess I could play a provisional from the tee, perhaps only if I wasn't sure I'd actually find the first one. Then I'd have to be careful about wrong ball if I do find mine somewhere playable. Easiest to me is the two-stroke drop and play from where I went out of bounds.
Scenario 2. In a ditch/creek. I'm on a fairway and there's a drainage ditch between me and the green. Sometimes it's filled up other times its empty. During tournaments I think it usually gets red stakes but on most days it's just a ditch. I duff my 7 and put the ball in this ditch. I can see the ball. Treating it like a penalty area, I can go back on the line for ONE stroke and drop my ball prior to the ditch. I then proceed as normal, now one stroke behind. or treating it as unplayable, I could do the same thing, also for ONE stroke, yes?
Scenario 3. The Pond. Off the tee box I hook it into the water. I saw it go in the water. From the tee, I can hit shot 3 and play on (stroke and distance). I think that's pretty much it. Can I go back on line and play 3 (or 4) from up ahead near where I crossed into the water?
Scenario 4. The Woods. Off the right side of the fairway is a big gulley and trees, big drop off, I'm not gonna climb down in there. I watch the ball hit a tree and fall into the gulley. It's gone. I think this area is marked out of bounds for tournaments. I can take two(?) strokes and just play from where I saw it go into the woods? I guess I could take one stroke and play from where I'm standing (stroke and distance?) or is the out-of-boundsness a factor here different than my first example. The ball is gone and the OB isn't marked. It's just practically out of bounds.
Scenario 5. The bridge. There's a bridge over another ditch/creek. Not marked, but I think gets red stakes during tournaments. I can see my ball kinda under the bridge. I could probably go down in there and flop shot it, but that seems silly. I can take one stroke and hit from prior to the ditch (on the line?).
Scenario 6. On a cart path and/or in long grass being regrown. We have a funny spot on one of our holes where there's a gravel cart path and also some ropes for where they're re-growing grass. I land here often and it's always a weird one. I don't wanna swing and hit gravel on the path. and I can't hit it out of roped 12-inch grass with a net over it. I feel like if I'm on the gravel path I get (free?) relief back on line, and if I'm in the grass I get (free?) relief because it's 'ground under repair'. Is this right?
These are the things I see the most at home; hopefully I'm counting these right.

Scenario 1. Slice out of bounds. Off the tee box on the right of the fairway are white OB stakes (there's a neighborhood). I see my ball, it's in someone's yard. I CAN pick up my ball and drop it back in bounds for TWO strokes (hitting fourth shot from here). Or, I can go back to the tee box and hit my third shot (stroke and distance). I guess I could play a provisional from the tee, perhaps only if I wasn't sure I'd actually find the first one. Then I'd have to be careful about wrong ball if I do find mine somewhere playable. Easiest to me is the two-stroke drop and play from where I went out of bounds.
Scenario 2. In a ditch/creek. I'm on a fairway and there's a drainage ditch between me and the green. Sometimes it's filled up other times its empty. During tournaments I think it usually gets red stakes but on most days it's just a ditch. I duff my 7 and put the ball in this ditch. I can see the ball. Treating it like a penalty area, I can go back on the line for ONE stroke and drop my ball prior to the ditch. I then proceed as normal, now one stroke behind. or treating it as unplayable, I could do the same thing, also for ONE stroke, yes?
Scenario 3. The Pond. Off the tee box I hook it into the water. I saw it go in the water. From the tee, I can hit shot 3 and play on (stroke and distance). I think that's pretty much it. Can I go back on line and play 3 (or 4) from up ahead near where I crossed into the water?
Scenario 4. The Woods. Off the right side of the fairway is a big gulley and trees, big drop off, I'm not gonna climb down in there. I watch the ball hit a tree and fall into the gulley. It's gone. I think this area is marked out of bounds for tournaments. I can take two(?) strokes and just play from where I saw it go into the woods? I guess I could take one stroke and play from where I'm standing (stroke and distance?) or is the out-of-boundsness a factor here different than my first example. The ball is gone and the OB isn't marked. It's just practically out of bounds.
