The Magic System of Quaraun's World: Mud Magic

2022.11.15 07:16 SacredPinkJellyFish The Magic System of Quaraun's World: Mud Magic

TL;DR: I have a shit ton load of mud spells, and this is a mega list of the ones I most commonly use in my books. There are more.
Got mud manipulation/mud mages/etc. in your world?
I love coming up with fire/ice/crystal/candy/sea creature/plant/etc based spells. So, yep, mud magic is a thing in my world. My mages practise those types of magic and I spend way too much time procrastinating by just making up lists of new spells for them, most of which I never end up using in my books, LOL!
Even though there are "elemental style" spells (earth, fire, water, metal, etc) I don’t classify my magic structure as “elemental”, because it’s more DnD style, jack of all trades, little bit of everything, type of magic, and so my mages are not restricted to just one type of spells. When I think of "elementalists" I think of mages who can only do one specific type of nature spell (only fire, for example) due to some genetic related reason, and I don't have genetic related magic in my world, thus I don't classify it as "elemental magic" even though some readers probably would. But it’s not uncommon for a mage to personally enjoy one type of magic over others so focus more on that one, so, a mage CAN learn anything magic-wise but he may just focus on Water spells because he happens to think water spells are cool and then end up calling himself a "water mage" or some such thing. However, magic in my world is difficult to lear, takes centuries to even master the basics, so only a few long lived races (Elves, Faeries, Demons) even live long enough to become proficient in magic. Plus, because magic is so difficult to learn and requires centuries of isolated studies, most people just get bored before they even learn to do much. As a result, there are only a hundred or so mages world wide, even though it is possible for anyone to learn magic, and fewer than a dozen mages whom have mastered "god power" levels of proficiency in magic, each of them being over a thousand years old.
My system has a lot of “basic/generic” spells, that most mages learn, and then the mage can altecustomise it in whatever manner he wants. So he can learn to cast a shield, which is an invisible force around him, but then he can customize the spell with fire or water or, in this case mud.
Meaning, the basic spell of protection is shield (creates an invisible wall in front of the mage) or barrier (produces an invisible orb/bubble around an area, like say the mage’s house). But then each individual mage can experiment with the spell, alter it by adding elements and whatnot to it, and wind up with his own unique to his signature interpretation of the spell. So, one mage may use fire components to generate a Fire Shield, that is literally a knight’s shield composed of flames, floating in front of him, while a different mage may take that same fire elements and produce a molten lava shield that swirls around him, while a bog mage may make a shield out of swamp sludge, and a desert dwelling mage may make his shield out of sand, and a mage who grows roses as a hobby may choose to make his shield out of thorn filled rose vines, and my silk weaver MC, Quaraun, summons mystical silk moths to insta-weave massive silkworm cocoons as a shield, while his unicorn lover, BoomFuzzy, a candy maker who is also a mage, summons a herd of marshmallow bunnies to shield himself with. While Quaraun's other lover, Demon mage GhoulSpawn/Gremlin, uses magma, lava, and exploding bubbling liquid fire for his. In each instance it is just one shield spell, but each mage made it unique to his own style.
So, as you can see, my magic system is VERY customizable and is sort of “Lego block” structure, where mages take basic spells, and then apply whatever they have or enjoy and produce their own adaptations of the spells. Mages in my world are extremely flamboyant, wearing Liberace style outfits in eye popping dat glow colours decked out in glitter, rhinestones, capes, fur, and feathers, and they tend to cast their spells in over the top elaborate shows of "hey look what I can do". Basically because high powered mages are thousand+ years old, they've reached a mentality of not caring what others think of them and are excessively arrogant, and very eccentric, and prone to making a big show of everything from their outfits to their spells.
Further, there are no “levels” or “power ups” or “boosts” in my magic system. It's made for a book series in the Romance genre, not for a game or LitRPG, so levels and stats and points are not a thing in my magic system at all. Like there is no: Basic FireBall, Advanced FireBall, Expert Grade FireBall, FireBall Level 1, FireBall Achievement 2, FireBall Enhancements, Improved FireBall, or so on. There is ONLY FireBall, and the spell’s power is determined by the mage’s skill, current emotional state, etc. For example a calm, relaxed, focused novice could cast a more powerful FireBall than a nervous, angry, or scared expert at magic, because magic requires being in a relaxed, meditative state in order to cast it “perfectly” and any distractions are going to limit the spell.
NOTE: A mages are not immune from damage by their own spells. A mage who wants to cast a fireball with his bare hands will likely burn his hands off and never be able to cast a spell again. A spell to blind an enemy with a bright flash of light, will also blind the mage if he's not wearing protective goggles. As such, mages wear metal masks, metal plated gloves, big steampunky goggles, ect. Mages are easy to pick out of a crowd because of their outlandish protective masks, gloves, and goggles.
Essentially, every time you see “Mud” in any spell on this list, you could just swap the word out with anything else, to get a variation of the spell. The most common ones I use are: Ice, Fire, Crystal, Roses/Rose Petals/Rose Bush/Rose Vines/Rose Thorns, Marshmallow Bunnies, Lightning, Electricity, Desert Sand, Beach Sand, JellyFish Tentacles, Silk/Silkworm/Silk Moth, Fog/Mist, Pumpkin Patch, Rapunzel Hair, Pine Trees, Serpent/Viper, Crow/Raven, Eagle, Sheep. Mud is not used quite so much, but it shows up from time to time. So, pretty much EVERY Mud spell listed below also has a Sheep Spell and an Ice Spell and a Rose Bush Spell and a Marshmallow Bunny Spell and a JellyFish Spell, etc, variation. Like I said, NOT elements or elemental, though the elements (Fire, Water, AiMetal, Earth/Wood) are included in the system.
I have a weather mage in my novels, Etiole, who is a MerMan-Elf Hybrid and is usually referred to as an ArchAngel by most other characters, and all of his magic is based around weathestorms/lightning/watehurricanes/ocean/tides/etc, so I created a bunch of wateweather-based spells for him. Also my MC, Quarauns lover BoomFuzzy, in his Lich form is a Frost Mage.
Of my mages, MC Quaraun is the one most likely to use Mud Magic, largely because he is a germaphobe and hates getting mud on him, so he often uses spells to remove mud from the road as he walks, uses spells to remove mud from his pink silk dresses, his pink feather capes, and his pink brocade slippers. Thus mud removal spells are the most commonly used in the novels.
Note: I consider Weather, Mud, Ice, Frost, Swamp, Bog, Marsh, Sludge, Fog, Cloud, Slime, Ooze, Steam, Acid, and Snow Magic to be separate magics, but also sub-sets within Water Magic, so I've included some of those on this list, plus I've included examples of how I change Water spells to Fire or other types of spells. On the other hand, I do not consider "water in the body/blood" to be Water Magic, rather instead I count them as Blood Magic and Healing Magic or Death Magic, depending on use. Thus spells controlling blood or water within the body are not included here.
I designed these specifically for a Demon from Hell in a Biblical Demon vs Archangel type of stories, so most of these are used by my Demon characters.
  • Affect Fog: Manipulate a normal fog bank within range. The fog can be gathered into a thick mass of opaque fog, creating a heavily obscured area, or dispersed to create an area of patchy fog that lightly obscures its area. Magically-created fog can’t be affected by this spell. A Lich spell, but can also be cast by mages. Mud can be summoned to rise out of the grund/swamp and mix with the fog, creating a mud-fog that not only obscures the enemy's path, but also drenches them in thick mud.
  • Armageddon: A rare spell, only employed by Demons. Summons an earthquake that rips a chasm open, with watesteam/mud/fire/magma and/or lava geysers bubbling out of it, while likewise producing volcanoes to rise out of the ground. Causes immense devastation, can eradicate entire countries when cast by an ancient ArchDemon. Can create a Noah's Ark style world wide flood, and can be done with mud instead of water. A powerful enough Demon can rip apart entire planets with it. GhoulSpawn/Gremlin in his thirteen thousand year old Checka form, is a powerful enough ArchDemon that he can and does do this (rip apart planets with it).
  • Black Ice: Casts black (invisible) ice on the ground causing enemy to slip and fall. Especially dangerous for hooved Demons, as they can not walk or stand on slippery ice and their sheep/goat/horse legs break easily when they fall. A Lich spell, but can also be cast by mages. Can be used to insta-freeze muddy roads into deadly slick ice.
  • Blinding Mud Light: Generates a levitating mud bubble of blinding luminescence. A bright flash of light that temp-blinds all who see it (including the mage if he’s not careful to wear an eye shielding face mask-note that most mages wear metal masks and metal plated gloves to protect themselves from damage by their own spells.) Useful to confuse enemies without hurting them, allowing for time to escape. Requires the ground around you to be muddy, as it uses the mud around you to form the glowing ball of mud transformed into light.
  • Blizzard: Summons a blizzard. A Lich spell, but can also be cast by mages. Typically down with snow, however, can be done with mud, and produce a massive "mud storm" that covers/buries an entire city in frozen mud.
  • Cataclysm of Mud: The ground turns to boiling bubbling mud at a point the mage chooses within range and crumbles before a vertical beam of stench filled bog mud spews into the air.
  • Chains of Ice: Frost ridden chains spew from the ground beneath a target within range. A Lich spell, but can also be cast by mages. A mud variation makes the chains out of slimy mud that freezes to ice.
  • Change Tide: Change high tide to low tide or low tide to high tide. (In my series, MC Quaraun is a Moon Elf and does moon/gravity/tide/ocean/jellyfish magic, including he frequently does this tide change spell, and after several years of it, the series ends, with the moon splitting in half, crashing into Earth and blowing it up, as a direct side effect of him doing this change tide spell too many times.) I list this as a Mud Spell, because it churns up a lot of mud and turns the shoreline into a muddy mess.
  • Chariot of Mud: Summons, a a grand chariot or stage coach or hearse composed of mud and two to six mud-golem horses to draw it. Moves at hyper speeds and can fly. The mage must cast protection spells on himself and passengers to ride the carriage or its horses safely. The ice version is a Lich spell, but can also be cast by mages. Fire, water, snow, pumpkin, rose vine, and lightning versions of this spell exist.
  • Control Mud: Uses telepathy to control any mud one encounters, mud puddles, swamps, bogs, etc. making the mud bigger or smaller. The mud can then rise up in the form of a Golem or Tulpa and be used as a minion. Can be any variation, such as Control Weather, Control Water, Control Fog, Control Vines, Control Seagulls, Control Rats, Control Fire, etc. I once had a mage use it to mind-control a flock of hummingbirds to peck a guy to death.
  • Create Mud Elemental: In my world, Elementals are not physical creatures, beings, or monsters, but are rather inanimate items of nature that are animated by a mage. A Mud Elemental is therefore an effigy or puppet created of mud and controlled by the mage, only able to do the things the mage makes it do. It has no free will or thoughts of its own.
  • Create Mud: The ability to create mud with one’s mind. Summons mud. Can be dangerous if over done in areas of drought as it can cause flash flooding if proper steps are not taken.
  • Crushing Tide: Summon a rushing wave of water that manifests in a 60-foot line that is 15 feet wide. Has a mud variation.
  • Cursed Mud: Used to curse items. For example, put a sword into the cursed mud to embed a curse into the sword.
  • Cyclone: Creates a waterspout tornado. Has a mud variation.
  • Dancing Mud Bubbles: A pair of glowing watery mud orbs that hover, while spinning, one on either side of the mage’s head. The mage can use hand movements to operate the orbs, “throwing” them at adversaries. The spheres return to the mage, like boomerangs. A variation is Dancing Fire Blades is a pair of flying daggers that hovers while spinning, the blades coated with fire.
  • Deflect Mud: Forming a shield to protect oneself from the mud attack of another mage.
  • Destroy Mud: Destroies Mud.
  • Dissipate Mud: Play Moses parting the Red Sea with this. Allows mage to force mud to stand up allowing dry land to appear, allowing the mage to walk across a swamp or bog or cross a muddy street, without getting dirty.
  • Dome of Mud: Akin to a barrier, a dome of protection, that is formed of mud.
  • Dragon Water Breath: The ability to “breath” water, like classic dragons. Shooting a water bolt/ray/laser from his mouth. Magic in my world is an energy source that exists in all things, but is dormant until employed by mages who studied how to “suck” the energy force out of things around them. So, a Water Mage is essentially “sucking” the “life force” out of water to produce his magic. This is the same with anything and why mages can draw on ANY object or material (even plants, animals, rocks, cars, rain, fire, other people, or even food) to “summon” sufficient poweenergy to cast a spell. This spell is HIGHLY dangerous because the mage has to “suck in” and absorb outrageous amounts of energy, essentially “filling his belly” with it, then releasing it through his mouth. Few mages ever achieve this spell as most die from their belly exploding into flames long before they absorb enough energy to release the water out of their mouth. The mage gathers Water Magic into his entire body and ejects it from the mouth, replicating Dragon’s Breath. I have 3 mages who made alternative variations of this; the Rapunzel haired silk weaving jellyfish MC, Quaraun himself shooting fire from his nipples, his candy making lover, BoomFuzzy, shooting fire from his dick just so he can tell people he pisses fire, and he likes to set up camp so he can shock strangers by pissing on the logs to start the campfire, and a beast lord, FireHawk, who turns into a phoenix and shoots fire from his eyes like lasers. Again can be substituted out with other materials. For example my weather mage, Etiole, “breaths' 'lightning bolts from his mouth instead of fire. NOTE: As mages can be seriously injured or even killed by their own spells, this one is considered particularly dangerous and is rarely attempted. Only the world’s most insanely super powered OP mega-mages ever attempt this spell. Few live through their first attempt, and it’s more often done by eccentric OP mages who just want to show off how mega-OP they are. A mage capable of doing this is probably also capable of insta-death blowing up the entire planet with his mind as well... which we see my MC Quaraun do in 4 separate solar systems, including he blows up the Earth. The ice version is a Lich spell, but can also be cast by mages, however as Liches are immortal undead that can never be destroyed, this spell is not dangerous to them and they can do it at will. Has a mud variation as well.
  • Dry Spring: stops a spring from bubbling up water. Can be used to dry up a mud puddle as well.
  • Earth to Water: Changes a section of earth/soil to a puddle of water. Can be used to create mud puddles or clean drinking water.
  • Enchant Item With Mud: Produce magic items that do mud magic. For example, turn a plain old stick into a mud wand that can fill pots or buckets with mud. Enchant a sword, so when a certain word is said, the blade turns into a mud-throwesuper-soaker. Lots of possibilities for household items and weapon items once you brainstorm things to enchant. As with my other spells, can be switched with any material.
  • Explosive Mud: A mudball that detonates on impact, similar to a grenade.
  • Flesh to Mud: Turns flesh to mud. Deadly. Kills the victim. A Lich spell, but can also be cast by mages.
  • Foul Water: Makes water undrinkable, by turning it to mud.
  • Freeze Mud: Freezes mud. A Lich spell, but can also be cast by mages.
  • Globe of Water or Waterball or Water Orb: Produces a Waterball within their palm to throw at enemies. Note: In my world, mages CAN be burned by their own spells, so the fire and acid versions of this are considerably dangerous and requires the mage to be wearing flame proof gloves, otherwise he’ll burn his hands right off casting this one. The mage will hold a “crystal” (gemstone) ball/orb/skull in his hands, the ball on one palm, his other palm placed on top of it, and will direct the water energy into the ball, as the ball levitates between his hands, no longer touching the crystal ball, then he “shoots” the waterball out of his crystal ball, him still holding the crystal ball, the waterball flung forward at the enemy. In both the fire and ice variants, the mage will get serious burns to his hands his not wearing special gloves to protect his hands from fie/frost burns. Demon mage GhoulSpawn/Gremlin, uses magma, lava, and exploding bubbling liquid fire for his orbs, BoomFuzzy uses frost, Etiole uses electricity, Quaraun uses a glowing gold light when he is SunTa and a pink light when he is The Sacred Pink JellyFish. Dr. Vangonese has a glowing white light orb that he uses to aid in healing his patients. Finzegala has a black metal techno-orb that he uses to scan the local area to find people. Rycliff uses a glowing blue orb to locate portals, riffs, and wormholes. Quaraun, who is often roaming in swamps, uses a mud version when fighting swamp hags.
  • Golems/Tolpas/Familiars: Three variations of the same basic thing. Golems require building an effigy/statue, Tolpas require a corpse/dead body, Familiars require a ghost/disembodied spirit. In each case the mage steals the soul of someone (usually via a selling your soul to the devil type of contract) and puts the soul into the object (effigy/statue/corpse/ghost) in order to create a zombie-like minion to do his bidding. Mud based Golems/Tolpas/Familiars can cast all the same mud spells as the mud mage who created them, but not as powerful as his are because they are “mirrors” of his abilities and not actually his abilities. The element is swappable to the mage’s “theme”, thus I have a mage who makes Snow Golems out of snowmen and another mage who makes Plant Tolpas out of dead roses and fallen trees. Fire Golems are a useful way for mages to cast fire spells without the fire energy going directly through their body and burning him from the inside out.
  • Hallucination: Casting a mind-control spell that causes someone to see a hallucination of the mage’s choice. I list it as a Mud spell, because a mage can use it to cause a person to believe they are drowning in mud or sinking in quicksand. The variation Mass Hallucination is used for casting a spell on an entire village.
  • Halo: Turns the mage’s natural aura into mud, causing a halo of mud to float/hover around the mage’s body. A levitation spell, cast to allow the mage to levitate several feet in the air out of reach of his enemy, giving him time to focus on the spell he is casting. Usually used with orb/glob/ball/or crystal skull spells. Used when creating orbs and balls. Demon mage GhoulSpawn/Gremlin, uses magma, lava, and exploding bubbling liquid fire for his halo, BoomFuzzy uses frost, Etiole uses electricity, Quaraun uses a glowing gold light when he is SunTa and a pink light when he is The Sacred Pink JellyFish. Dr. Vangonese has a glowing white light halo that he uses to aid in healing his patients. Finzegala has a purple-black metal techno-halo that he uses when he scans the local area to find people. Rycliff uses a glowing blue halo when trying to locate local portals, riffs, and wormholes.
  • Holy Water: Water that is used to cleanse a curse from something. For example, place a cursed sword in Holy Water to remove the curse. Difficult to make. Holy Fire is a variation. There is a mud variation.
  • Hydra: Summons a seven headed dragon from any nearby mud puddles, swamps, or bogs.
  • Hypnotic Mud: A floating mud ball that mesmerizes whoever sees it, causing them to not be able to do anything but stare at it.
  • Ice Sphere: Summons a sphere of ice, which can be used in various ways. Use it as a bowling ball, a cannon ball, or just chuck it at an enemy's head. A Lich spell, but mages can do it as well. Has a frozen mud variation.
  • Lake of Fire: Turning water into lava/magma. Minor mages can only do it with small amounts of water. But ancient powerful Arch-demons and Archangels can turn entire rivers or lakes into fire. Will instantly burn to death all life in the water: plants, animals, fish, swimmers. My Frost Liches have a variation of this, turning water to solid ice, again killing all life in the water instantly. BoomFuzzy, being a Lich, does this often. This spell, both fire and ice versions, is an evil spell in my world, as it’s only used by villains who just want to kill things. Can be done with mud puddles, swamps, and bogs.
  • Levitating Water Cloud: A mode of transportation, and a variation of a flying carpet spell, the mage casts a “blanket” or “cloud” of water, which he can stand on and use like a hover-board. My Faeries use Fey Step or Stray Sod which are similar. They make the dirt/soil/grass/leaves beneath their feet into a floating clump they can move about on. My silk weaver MC, Quaraun, has 12foot long Rapunzel hair made of JellyFish tentacles and uses this spell to levitate via standing on his hair. Being a silk weaver, he also uses this spell to make hand woven silk magic carpets which he sells to people. The fire version of this spell is typically not actual flames, but usually astral projection light made to look like fire, allowing the mage to hover on a cloud of fire without getting burned. However, Demons are more likely to use actual fire or even lava for this spell, as their hooves are made to naturally protect their feet from Hell’s heated rock surfaces. GhoulSpawn/Gremlin, being a sheep-Demon, he’s able to run up cliffs and bounce over crage with ease, like a Mountain Goat because of his hooves, which also afford him the ability to walk on fire. He is frequently seen turning the ground under his feet into boiling magma pools, then hopping around it without issue due to his Demon hooves which protect him from being burned. BoomFuzzy, in his Lich form hovers on a blue Frost Mist that sucks the heat out of the area causing everything he passes to turn to solid ice. Mud can me used to create a levitating mud carpet.
  • Magma Mud Eruption: The mage causes the ground to explode and spew forth a geyser of molten rock and mud that hardens by the heat into shards that shower down and stab enemies.
  • Meteor Storm: Bigger than Tempest, not as big as BrimStone. As the name implies, it is the act of summoning a shower of meteors. The Fire variation summons fireballs instead. And a Flaming Snowball variation summons giant snowballs that burst into flames on impact. Like every spell, can be any element or object. A Purple Hippo variation rains purple hippos. I have too a Candy Hearts, a SlimeBall, a Flaming Jack-o'-lantern, a Swamp sludge, and a Toxic Slime version. Most mages use drugs to enhance their spell casting, but too much can go the wrong way, thus why MC Quaraun has caused vampire turkeys with pink feathers to fall out of the sky when he is on LSD and casting this spell. Quaraun has been known to cast this on swamps and cause mud meteors.
  • Mud Armour: Not literal armour, not a physical suit you wear. Rather, a shield or barricade that flutters around you.
  • Mud Bolt: A weather spell, similar to the Raining Brimstone. The mage casts lightning bolts (summons them from the sky/clouds), but they are made of mud. Like most spells I create, we can swap this out. So Ice Bolt or Wind Tunnel or Snow Drift or Fire Bolt would all be variations of this same spell but using other elements.
  • Mud Form: An illusion spell used mostly to terrify enemies. Give the appearance that the mage’s body is made of mud. I commonly use Flame Form, Frost Form, Plant Form for my mages.
  • Mud Jet: Summons a jet spray of mud. Messy.
  • Mud to Wine: Changes mud into wine.
  • Mud Tools: Unlike other magic systems, in my system, mages can make use of many gadgets. Meaning a mage is not restricted to JUST ONE wand or JUST ONE staff. A mage may have several wands, several staves, a few orbs and more. Tools are used to help focus and to protect the mage from the dangers of Fire, Frost, Acid, Slime, Mud, or other magic types. Only foolish mages attempt magic without the safety of tools. Most mages will have a few each of the following: enchanted fancy carved metal face macks, metal plated enchanted gloves, wands, staffs, glass/crystal/gemstone orbs, crystal/gemstone skulls, crystal/gemstone pyramids, gemstone runes, enchanted dice, a bag of various gemstones, decks of cards, gemstone pendulums and spirit boards to use them with, enchanted gloves to protect their hands, enchanted shoes or boots to protect their feet, enchanted rings/ear-rings/nose-rings/nipple-rings, prayer shawls, enchanted robes/cloaks/aprons. Those are the basic tools owned by mages. An advanced mage may have many other items as well.
  • Mud-Blower: Like Mud-thrower, projects a stream of mud, but smaller and not as destructive.
  • Mud-Thrower: As the name implies, it launches a massive stream of mud. Very deadly.
  • Overbearing Mud Devastation: Releases a massive stream of mud of extreme temperatures. Requires a staff, so the mage can direct the water and earth (mud) energy into the staff and out of the end of the staff, diverting it away from his body, to protect himself from being drowned. Ice version pulverizes victims with shards of razor sharp ice. The ice version is a Lich spell, but can also be cast by mages.
  • Pearly Gates: A huge gateway composed of mother-of-pearl abalone shells. Can be dropped on roads or bridges to block the enemy from getting into your territory. A Gates of Hell variation casts a gate made of fire. A variation is to construct a fence around an area. Liches has an ice version. Mud versions can be made out of swamp sludge. Pumpkin vine and rose vine versions exist as well.
  • Penetrating Mud: A spell dealing harm. Usually kills victim or leaves crippled for life. Causes a ball of mud to form inside their body, drowning them from the inside out.
  • Pillar of Mud or Column of Mud: Creates a column or pillar of mud. I’ve never found a use for this in any of my novels. Someday I’ll figure out what it is good for. The idea comes from Lot’s wife and the pillar of salt scene in the Bible. Has water and fire versions.
  • Propeller: Use mud as propulsion to move at high speeds. I always imagine this one as Sean Connery’s James Bond, using it to mega-power his speed boats across the ocean. I also have Water, Wind, Fire, Ice, and Crystal versions of this that I’ve used.
  • Purify Mud to Water: Makes mud change into clean drinkable water.
  • Purifying Bath - Literal: Bathing in water blessed with spiritual oils to clease negative energy or curses from one's body. - The reverse of this is Curing Mud, used to curse others, by pouring it in their bath water.
  • Purifying Bath - Symbolic: Wash a spirit doll while casting this spell to enhance its power. Cursing Mud variation, casts a curse by proxy by bathing a doll in the mud, to muddy the victims soul.
  • Rain: Summons a rain storm. - Death of Mud variation, causes it to rain mud on a person until they drown in the mud.
  • Raining Brimstone and Fire From Heaven: The mage casts a thundelighting/rain/hail storm, but instead of water and hailstones its sparks of fire and blazing lumps of coal falling from the sky. (This is one of my favourites. I have a fire mage and a weather mage and gave this to both of them.) Can be swapped out with anything and I’ve one Faerie Trickster mage, BoomFuzzy, who does this spell, but casts a downpour of cats and dogs raining out of the sky. This is also weather mage Etiole’s “signature spell”, which he casts in the form of huge lightening storms, with the lightening bolts exploding him flames. In his Lich form, BoomFuzzy has a Frost version of this that causes everything to freeze and turn into blue crystal quartz, turning entire cities, forests, and people into crystal statues – this is the deadly phenomenon known as The Crystal Plague throughout the series. Water version can cast huge typhoons. A mud variation drowns/buries cities in a massive mudslide.
  • Shape Mud: Used to summon a golem or tulpa made of mud.
  • Shield/Barrier: A bubble of water, the mage can cast around himself or his friends to protect them from attack. Water version is weaker than some other versions as it keeps out Humanoid/MonsteBeasts because it drowns them so they can’t get through it, but water won’t stop things like bullets or arrows or rocks that can be shot/thrown through water. The material used to make it effects its ability to protect. Made of glass, it would shatter easily, made of stone, it would stop bullets. My Frost Liches do this with an orb of frost instead of water. BoomFuzzy makes massive frost shields that can encase an entire planet, which he does when an alien invasion happens. Shield version creates a small shield that hovers in front of the mage, while Barrier version creates a large “bubble” that can be small enough to encircle the mage and his group, or large enough to encircle an entire house/building/town/city. Barrier is an advanced spell, and difficult to cast as the mage must stay focused on the spell the ENTIRE TIME the barrier is up. If he becomes distracted, the barrier will weaken, and if he loses consciousness, the barrier will break. MC Quaraun, being an Elf and not needing sleep, is able to build and maintain massive barriers, which he uses to trap people. He puts up a huge glass dome, then releases his pet Drago-Lich inside, and waits or it to eat everyone before taking the barrier back down. A mud variation is used by swamp hags.
  • Smite: Similar to Scorch, but with the ability to direct it, aim it, and throw it to a person, causing that person to instantly evaporate to piles of ash and bones. This is the spell my MC, Quaraun, uses frequently to destroy entire villages instantly. There is a version, which instead of turning them to ash, it instead turns their bones to mud and they become a jelly-blob of flesh that die due to their organs drowning in the mud that had replaced their bones; again this spell is cast by MC Quaraun aka The Pink Necromancer, when he's feeling particularly spiteful and wants to make them suffer for a few minutes before they die.
  • Tempest or Twister of Mud: Creates a tornado of Mud. Can also cause big showers of Mud, but not as big as the BrimStone version. I have sand storm, ice, fire, crystal, piranha, pumpkin patch, rose thorn, water, and Rapunzel Hair versions of this one. Snow version creates massive blizzards. Ice version creates deadly ice storms. Water versions can create water spouts, typhoons, tidal waves, or hurricanes. Toss in some sharks and you got SharkNado. This is a common one used by Etiole, who casts electricity tornadoes.
  • Torch Light: Creates a small hovering mud ball/orb that acts as illumination and floats beside the mage. Basically, a Will-o'-the-wisp type spell that creates a glowing orb that follows the mage as he travels. Good for exploring dark caves and basements. Different materials do different things. Fire creates a flame. Water creates a bubble. Ice creates a glowing icicle, snow creates a glowing snowball.
  • Torrent: Summon a massive blast of mud, a huge wave, from a nearby body of muddy water (swamp, bog, ec.).
  • Towering Inferno: Summoning a massive tower of mud. Fire version is frequently used by Gremlin when he wants to scare the shit out of people.
  • Toxic Mud: Mud that gives off toxic fumes.
  • Trap: An innocent-looking pebble with a rune or sigil drawn on it. Place it in the path where you know your enemy will step. When stepped on, the pebble explodes, creating a cage-like wall of mud around the person who stepped on it, trapping them, until you reverse the spell and set them free. My most used version of this is the Marshmallow Bunny version, used by the Unicorn mage BoomFuzzy. Nothing like melting magical marshmallow bunnies to glue your enemy to the ground with.
  • Undertow: Opens a portal to a muddy, sludgy, boggy abyss beneath the feet of an enemy.
  • Vortex of Mud: A type of portal that is made of mud.
  • Walk on Mud: Also has Walk on Water, Coals, Nails, Lava, Fire, Ice, or Snow variations. Quite simply, the ability to walk on objects you normally couldn’t easily walk on. Mud version allows safe passage over swamps, bogs, quagmires, and quicksand.
  • Wellspring: Transform and pull up water out of the ground into a miniature spring that lasts for the duration specified. (My MC, Quaraun uses this when setting up camp, so that he and his crew have access to clean drinking water. When he does this it remains for the duration of the campsite be it one hour, one day, or one week.) If left entirely alone, and no duration time is specified, it will form a small oasis, and plant life will begin growing around it. If it is otherwise drank from, stepped in, or physically interacted with, the spring dries up when the spell ends. A swamp version exists, summoning a swamp full of lush green swamp life.
  • Whirlpool: Summons a whirlpool in any nearby mud puddle.
  • Wings of Water: Creates six massive “archangel wings” out of water. The wings look like gold feathers and are covered with eyes that can see all around. The wings hover over the mage’s back like an aura. Each wing is three times the height of the mage’s body. He can use the wings to fly or levitate, or wrap them around himself to create a barrier to keep out projectiles, deflecting bullets or arrows. I have variations of this. For example, my weather mage, Etiole, makes his wings out of blue electrical sparks that are basically lighting bolts, and one of my crystal mages has wings made of quartz crystals, while a beast lord mage, BlackBird, with an affinity for birds of prey makes his wings out of black bird feathers, while my main character, Quaraun, who has an affinity to sea creatures especially jellyfish makes his wings out of stinging Portuguese Man o War jellyfish tentacles. BoomFuzzy in his Lich form has frozen ice wings. Basically, whatever theme/element/object that is the mage’s primary magic type is what he makes his wings out of. NOTE: The fire version of this is not actual fire, but is a flame-like astral projection aura, thus it does not burn the mage while he does it. ALSO: A mage is not limited to one type of “wings”. So a mage could do fire wings today and snow wings tomorrow, depending on his mood. If he wanted to be spooky, and “dress up” for Halloween, for example, he could make leathery bat-wings for himself. Swamp hags often make wings of swamp mud.

What is Dota 2 Auto Chess?

https://preview.redd.it/nzbh1ysd70w21.png?width=820&format=png&auto=webp&s=42578f1b7c58c6ced81a7dbd810228877fe85541
The game of Auto Chess is an 8-player PvP game mode in Dota 2 based around an 8 by 8 chess board, where the individual chess pieces are Dota 2 heroes. Each round, every player gets a random set of heroes from a limited pool and has to arrange them on their side of the board (4 by 8). Each player controls a courier with a 100% health bar. The courier's Mana is always equal to the player’s Gold amount (the maximum is 100 as well). Gold and Economics play a key role in Auto Chess. We will get to that later.
The players are then matched against each other (or against neutral Creeps every 5 rounds) and the chess pieces battle against each other automatically. When you fight neutral Creeps, you get the chance to acquire some items which you can hand over to your pieces to make them stronger. If you lose the battle, you lose one health point for each enemy hero left on the board (2 or 3 if the enemy hero is powerful). The game is over when only one player remains standing.

How to install Auto Chess for Dota 2?

To start playing Dota Auto Chess, you have to download it. Launch the Dota 2 client and find the library of custom games, where you will definitely find Dota Auto Chess. It won’t take you more than a minute – it’s a piece of cake.

1. Download Dota 2

2. Add Auto Chess to Dota 2

How to get gold

How to get more Gold in Auto Chess

As mentioned earlier, Economics is one of the cornerstones of Dota Auto Chess.
  • Every round, you get a basic amount of gold. For rounds 1, 2, and 3, you get 1, 2, and 4 gold pieces respectively. Starting from round 5, you get 5 gold.
  • When you defeat an opponent on your board, you get 1 gold. Moreover, if you manage to win a series of consecutive victories/losses, you also get more gold (up to 3).
  • Every round, you also get 10% interest on all gold you already have. However, there is a cap of 5 gold on that. In other words, even if you have 100 gold, for example, you would only get 5 gold as interest.
  • You can sell your Level 1 chess pieces for cost price. Chess pieces at levels 2 or 3 are sold at a price corresponding to their levels.

Overview of Gold in Auto Chess

At the start of the game, it is important to come up with your strategy in advance in order to successfully support your economy. If you alternate wins and losses, you will not receive bonus gold, which will greatly affect your future position in the game. Thus, it would make more sense to aim at having a winning streak/losing streak. The strategies for these are will be described later.
Gold can be spent not only on purchasing pieces, but also on leveling up your Courier. As you level your Courier up, the limit of pieces that you can place on the board increases. There is a special “level up” button and clicking on it gets you 4 XP for your Courier in exchange for 5 gold for every click. To check how much XP you have at a particular point in time, you should press the ALT button - the numbers will appear below the Courier icon. If you want to reroll the set of chess pieces you are given, you will have to pay 2 gold.

Building a Team

This is where the fun begins.
There are 58 types of chess pieces in Dota Auto Chess, with each belonging to a particular species and class. Each chess piece has its own skill, which it uses automatically when 100 Mana is reached. A chess piece gets Mana when it deals or receives damage. The list of all the chess pieces in Auto Chess can be found by clicking on a special button at the upper left corner of the screen.

https://preview.redd.it/aev7mjbf70w21.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=7306630f0193d400fbe894f0bf1dba798c42a5eb
Different chess pieces come at different price levels, which are indicated by different colors. The more expensive a chess piece is, the lower the chances are of you getting it. The chances of acquiring chess pieces depends on your Courier’s level - basically, to get rare figures, you should level up your Courier!

https://preview.redd.it/fmtviiag70w21.png?width=1405&format=png&auto=webp&s=4517181c0e3839e4dfbee6a3a76e26a179c0628d
But there’s no need to rush! First of all, you will have to develop your strategy.
For example, here is no sense in leveling up your Courier if your strategy is based on low-priced chess pieces.

Being creative is a good thing, but sometimes it’s better to avoid reinventing the wheel.
For example, some starting combos already include some low-level pieces that form a synergy. Let’s take a look!
  • WARRIORS+ORCS. 3 warriors and 2 orcs (Juggernaut, Axe). This combination is easy to create at the very beginning. Your warriors have +5 armor buff and an additional 250 HP. Moreover, this combination deals good damage.

https://preview.redd.it/qf2yapji70w21.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=f6ad431c8d40b1181a558e6a55fdd323f5859ccc
  • GOBLINS+MECHS. 3 goblins, 2 mechs (Clockwerk, Tinker, Timbersaw, Bounty Hunter). This combo is one of the most popular among players. The main drawback is that, at the start, all the pieces have minor damage, which is not enough to achieve the strategy where your Goblins and Mechs are buffed with a regeneration HP and armor bonus.

https://preview.redd.it/er2fcyej70w21.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=74f9c38f67907e0460ba8d6bfd447b523a6ba03d
  • ELVES+DRUIDS. Anti mage + Treant Protector + Nature's Prophet + enchantress. The first three figures are able to tank well and have 20% evasion. Moreover, Treant Protector, Nature's Prophet, Enchantress, and Lone Druid (which costs 4 gold) are druids and require only 2 pieces to move up to the next level (★), so they can be easily become ★★ at the very beginning of the game. More on STARS ★ a little bit later.

https://preview.redd.it/aeac1c7k70w21.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=5fe506e643bf27f14c7df61a6a38b5b7c0d2f067
  • KNIGHTS+any piece. If you are lucky enough to have Knights at the start, keep them! A combination of 3 Knights is quite hard to beat at the very beginning because they have 40% chance to proc a damage-reducing shield for 3 sec. What’s more, Chaos Knight is both a Demon and a Knight and has 50% additional pure damage.

https://preview.redd.it/sc8bqb7l70w21.png?width=1383&format=png&auto=webp&s=ef9ac5d4a5379f8bc621065d552dc140676491d1
  • 2nd level figures (★★). If you managed to get ★★ pieces right away, use this to your advantage. Even though they do not match with your starting pack, ★★ pieces are more powerful than any combination at the early stages of Dota Auto Chess.
There are dozens of other strategies in Dota Auto Chess. These were just some basic combinations that could still be improved by adding more strategic pieces. The first and most important thing you need to do is to take your time and study the pieces. Doing that can help save you a lot of time in the future.

How to play Auto Chess

Basic Gameplay

Randomness, chance, and luck play a big role in this game. When a match starts, your opponents may get better combinations than yours or even Level 2 pieces, while you might have nothing to work with. Here you have to decide which strategy you will implement: a winning streak or a losing streak?
The losing streak strategy is pretty simple and straightforward. You have to lose round by round in order to get additional gold. However, keep in mind that you would be sacrificing HP for gold. As soon as you have 50 gold, choose another strategy and start placing heroes on the board.

https://preview.redd.it/alzc6s7q70w21.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=a37d2eec995962e3c4f6a70dc8c0a0c47ad75f1c
The winning streak strategy requires luck and good scouting and research on enemy pieces. Do it only if you have a close-to-perfect starting board. You will have to constantly strengthen your board to keep up the winning streak. To be able to get the pieces you need, you should be ready to spend gold on rerolls.

https://preview.redd.it/sgjosd8p70w21.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=10321d29e5eec4664364220d26ebad256bea5667

Auto Chess: Basic strategy

After the starting pieces are placed, you have to decide which strategy you are going to implement. Pay close attention to your enemies. If they get a particular combination of pieces, you are unlikely get the same ones. Remember that players receive pieces from a one-for-all deck, which means that there is no reason to plan a particular combination in advance (before the match starts). In a game of minds, it’s silly to rely on luck.
The main rule of Dota Auto Chess is: play with what you have. There are numerous ways to combine figures which have synergy among each other. With good resource management, you will be able to create a strong board in the later stages of the game. To implement a strategy, you should have a high gold income, which starts when you have 50 gold. Every round after that, you will get a maximum bonus of 5 gold.

Advanced Dota Auto Chess Tactics

Warriors + Control (stun, disable, etc.)

Warriors have good damage and armor aura that affects all of the warriors on your board.
Below are the bonuses that each combo has
  • + 250 HP to Orcs (Axe, Juggernaut)
  • 10% damage to all heroes/pieces (increased attack damage of 10% for 2 friendly beasts for all allies, as well as the possibility of these pieces summoning new ones)
  • 20% chance to silence the enemy for 4 seconds (2 friendly humans have a 20% chance to silence target for 4s when attacking).
  • 50% pure damage. (Demon’s buff deals 50% extra pure damage to its target)
  • +21 armor to all your warriors. (If you go with 9 different warriors later in the game)
Add tide/enigma/disruptomedusa to have disables. This is important later on in the game. You will see for yourself that control is key to victory. By implementing such a strategy, you have good damage and additional control.

Goblins + Mechs

This is an easy strategy thanks to the starting combo we’ve mentioned before, but hold on a second – not so fast! To execute it well, you have to level up your Courier to get rare techies as fast as possible. This strategy focuses on quick push your enemies with huge regeneration buffs + damage dealt by the techies. With this strategy, you will dominate until later on in the game, where late-game counter-strategies might be played against you.
  • 3 goblins - Grants a random ally +15 armor and +10 HP regeneration.
  • 6 goblins - Grants all allies with +15 armor and +10 HP regeneration.
  • 2 Mechs - All friendly mechs have +15 HP regeneration.
  • 4 Mechs - All friendly mechs have an additional +25 HP regeneration.
When the game is about to enter the late stage, add some damage+control (tide/enigma/disruptomedusa).

Elves-Druids+Beasts+Control

Treant Protector+ Anti Mage + Enchantress + Furion + Luna + Windranger + Templar Assassin + Lone Druid + any of these: shadow fiend/tide/enigma/disruptomedusa.The last pick depends on whether or not you need additional damage or control.
  • (3) Elves: All friendly elves have +20% evasion.
  • (6) Elves: All friendly elves have an additional +25% evasion.
  • (2) Beasts: All allies have +10% attack damage, including summoned pieces.
As soon as you collect 6 elves, physical damage is no longer a big threat to you. Beasts will inflict additional damage aura on all pieces. The main advantage of this strategy is that the elves-druids combinations are very easy to make - two Druids★ can upgrade to one Druid★★. This strategy is as strong mid-game as the Goblins+Mechanisms.

Assassins and different variations of this strategy

In the current meta, one of the strongest classes is the Assassins. Their main advantage lies in the fact that they are cheap and that they have a lot of damage from the initial stage of the game.
Early in the game, it is very easy to pool together 3 assassins to get a starting buff that has a 15% chance of dealing a critical hit of 350% damage.
They can also easily be combined with any 3 tanks until you have 6 assassins. For example, you can pair 3 assassins with 3 goblins or 3 elves. But keep in mind that your tanks must be at level 2 in order to gain time for the assassins on the board. Later in the game, playing this class is much easier than playing others, since you only need a Level 8 Courier and the right economy strategy to win.
Once you have managed to achieve these conditions, start rolling pieces to level 3. The most effective piece is the Phantom Assassin.
The Phantom Assassin has the passive “COUP DE CRAGE”, which gives you a 10% chance to deal a critical hit of 300% / 450% / 600% damage depending on the level of the piece.
One of the best combinations at Level 8 is 6 assassins + Level 3 Treant Protector + Level 2 or 3 Lone Druid. It is advisable to have a Level 3 Queen of Pain, Phantom Assassin, or Bounty Hunter. If you have these pieces, then you have the Treant Protector with elves evasion buff, which will gain time for your assassins to destroy any enemy board.
  • (3) Elves: all friendly elves get +20% evasion
  • (3) Assassins: All friendly assassins have a 15% chance to deal a critical hit of 350% damage
  • (6) Assassins: All friendly assassins have a 15% chance to deal a critical hit of 450% damage

https://preview.redd.it/685cm4rr70w21.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=14e51bd0cb17cee9bcee0d44da87466e302b5b7e
Another strategy would be to put 6 assassins + Level 3 Tiny + Level 2 or 3 Lone Druid. Tiny + Morphling will give the elementals buff to turn enemy melee pieces into stone.
Lone Druid is very good in this strategy as it causes an extra summon, one of the most powerful pieces in the game.
  • (2) Elementals: all friendly elementals have a 30% chance to turn the attacker into stone for 4s when attacked by melee chess pieces.
  • (3)Assassins: All friendly assassins have a 15% chance to deal a critical hit of 350% damage
  • (6) Assassins: All friendly assassins have a 15% chance to deal a critical hit for 450% damage
All in all, remember that you can always experiment and try different combinations of pieces and, in doing so, increase your expertise in and understanding of the game.

Basic Principles Of Positioning

On top of strategy, economics, and random luck, placing figures in the right position will also help you win the game. Carefully monitor your enemies’ boards and adapt to their style. You can even knock an opponent out with fewer pieces, as long as the pieces are strategically positioned on the board. Figures that should cast their spells first should be placed at the frontline. Low HP heroes should be place at the back to help protect them using other, stronger pieces.

To win in auto chess, you should pay attention to:

  • Time. The amount of time allotted for buying pieces and thinking about the strategy between rounds is only 30 seconds. Throughout the game, you need to constantly change, buy, and level up your pieces while at the same time monitoring your opponents. With so much to do, 30 seconds is usually not enough, so you have to think up your next move in advance and act quickly.
  • Switch strategies. If you start the game off with one of the starting combos, but then you notice that you are missing some important pieces, do not be afraid to add them. Always keep a few heroes in stock. That will make you flexible.
  • Enemies’ boards/pieces. The pool of pieces is the same for everyone, so if you notice that you and your opponent may be implementing the same strategy with the same pieces, it is better to avoid that strategy altogether as you would both be blocking each other and neither of you would succeed! Pieces will be returned to the board as soon as an opponent dies, leaves the game, or simply sells the piece.
  • Positioning. Each species and class has special features, so it is very important to place pieces in a way that would play each piece to its advantage and make your board stronger. Do not forget to keep an eye on your opponents’ boards to position your figures in the right way.
  • Damage table. To the left of the battlefield, you will see dps — the amount of damage per second dealt by your heroes. Try to change some pieces from time to time, as doing so may help raise your dps. However, don’t forget that some pieces may be on your board to create a synergy with other pieces, so consider whether a higher dps would really be better than a synergy (even if the synergy may give you a lower dps).

How levels work in Dota Auto Chess

As mentioned earlier, your Courier’s level allows you to increase the number of pieces on the board and increases the chances of receiving a rare piece.
The courier has 10 levels. Below are the amounts of XP needed to reach each level.
Level 1 - basic
Level 2 - 1 XP
Level 3 - 1 XP
Level 4 - 2 XP
Level 5 - 4 XP
Level 6 - 8 XP
Level 7 - 16 XP
Level 8 - 24 XP
Level 9 - 32 XP
Level 10 - 40 XP

How can I get XP in Dota Auto Chess?

There are 2 ways to level up your courier in Dota Auto Chess:
  1. Getting 1 XP at the start of each new round.
  2. Increasing the level by paying out gold. Each click will cost you 5 gold and increase your Courier’s XP by 4 points.

Always keep in mind which pieces you currently need for your strategy. Beware: your Level 10 Courier will give you access to expensive and rare pieces, but at the same time the chances of you getting cheaper and more basic ones in your roll will decrease. So if you need the more basic pieces, you may want to reconsider leveling up your Courier too much. That’s one heads up we’d like to give you. As you can see, in Dota Auto Chess, you need to strategize beforehand and make sure you are aware of all the game mechanics.

Auto Chess Upgrades: How to combine and upgrade chess pieces in Dota Auto Chess

Let’s go back to the pieces themselves. Each has 3 upgrade levels. A piece’s current level is indicated with stars (★, ★★ and ★★★ respectively).
The formula is pretty simple:
3 x ★ = One ★★ piece
3 x ★★ = One ★★★ piece
Upgrading pieces is a must if you want to succeed in Dota Auto Chess. Starting pieces are always at Level 1. Each piece has its own strengths compared to other pieces of the same level, but the difference between a Level 1 piece and a Level 2 piece is really huge. Make the most of high level pieces, even if they do not match your current combination of pieces, especially at the beginning of the game.
Remember that you can upgrade 3 druids into one, but doing that would be very costly for your economy.
If you want to get a next level druid, it is better to choose 2 of the same druids, with the third being a different one. For example, two Treant Protectors and one Enchantress. In this case, your Treant Protector will transform into a ★★ Treant Protector.
A special condition for getting a level 3 Druid (★★★) is that you need to have four different druids on your board (Lone Druid, Enchantress, Furion, Treant Protector), and one of them must be a duet of ★★. Sound confusing? Let’s have a look at an example.
So you want to get ★★★ Lone Druid. To do that, on the board you need to have two Level 2 Lone Druids (★★) + Enchantress, Furion, Treant Protector. This is the only way to get a Level 3 Lone Druid ★★★.
If it’s still not too clear, the videos below show examples of working with druids:

What is Dota 2 Auto Chess Candy?

There are nice bonuses in Dota Auto Chess in the form of so-called “Candies”. With these, you can purchase in-game cosmetic items, mostly new Couriers to change the default donkey.

How do you get Candy in Auto Chess?

Candies are given to players depending on their final game results in a particular chess match. If you managed to be among the Top 3, a certain amount of candies will be yours for sure. Candies are also rewarded for knocking out players. The more players you knock out, the more candies you will get at the end of the game.
The maximum limit of cherished Candies per day is 10.

How do you buy new couriers in Auto Chess?

What can you spend Candy on in Auto Chess?

To open a Candy Store, click on the Courier Collection tab in the upper left corner.
If you have the required amount of candies, click on the roll button to get a random courier, which costs 40 candies. You can also choose a rare courier, but the type of rare courier available and its price changes from time to time.
Note that you might also get a duplicate of the courier you already have. But worry not: the developers have created an exchange tool, where you can exchange couriers of a certain type for a rarer one. You can also sell a duplicate Courier for 10 candies.

Ranks

Dota Auto Chess has its own ranking system.
The hierarchy is listed below. The Pawn is the basic rank for every player, while the Queen is the highest rank.
  1. Queen
  2. King
  3. Rook
  4. Bishop
  5. Knight
  6. Pawn
In each of the above categories, there are steps that are numbered 1-9. Once you reach the highest step, you will move up to the next rank. For example, once you reach Pawn-9, the next rank will be Knight-1.
Each rank has its own rating range, shown in the table below:

There is a new season system added from the last patch.
New Season: Claim you reward for S0: Mystery now in the game! The higher the ranking achieved, the better the reward will be. The season began on May 1.

Item list

The beginning of each match in Dota Auto Chess starts the same way, no matter what. In the first three waves, you will battle against Creeps for experience and perhaps acquire some items in the process as they sometimes leave items when you kill them. Items are also a very important part of the game. Throughout the match, you will face the Creeps again, but they will obviously get stronger and stronger each time you meet them.

  • Items combine automatically in the player's or the hero's inventory once the round begins
  • Items can be locked to prevent automatic combining
  • Combined items cannot be disassembled for the pieces. They can be disassembled only in the courier.

Basic tricks

  1. Io’s feature - unlike other Legendary pieces, there is a small chance for an Io to appear at any Courier level. Since this is not mentioned anywhere in the description of the game, it means that only lucky players will get the chance to have this piece.
  2. Assault cuirass gives the aura to both your pieces and your opponent’s pieces while on the Courier, so you can run around and make any of the pieces on your board more powerful.
  3. Enchantresses bring more gold. If you upgrade Enchantress ★ to Enchantress ★★ with the use of druids, you can sell it for 3 gold instead of 2, which means you get 1 extra gold from doing this.
  4. Scouting enemy teams is now easier thanks to the new update. Instead of having to physically move your mouse around the arenas, you can pull the scoreboard out from the side of the UI. The extended scoreboard details all enemy player units, their chess levels, their class and species bonuses, their current gold level, their win/loss ratio, and how much damage they’ve dealt in comparison to other players.

Summary and key advices

  • Economics is a key to victory. The more gold you can accumulate for each subsequent round, the easier it will be to play. Level up your courier and roll the pieces only if you need to.
  • Streaks. Watch out for your streaks to get bonus gold. You shouldn’t alternate winning and losing round after round.
  • Enemies. Pay attention to your opponents’ strategies. It’s not a good idea to have the same strategy as someone else. Luck might not be on your side and you will be knocked out.
  • Starting combos. Use the combos we described above for a good start. Especially if you are a beginner, it will be easier to start by having simple but effective combinations on the board.
  • Flexibility. Always keep different types of pieces in your deck to be able to quickly switch to a different strategy.
  • Positioning of pieces. No matter how strong your pieces are, always put them in the right place. Always keep an eye on your opponents’ pieces and their movements. Even if you have the strongest board at a certain point, you can lose a round and consequently a streak if your pieces are put in the wrong places.
  • Play with what you are given. Adapt to the situation. Perhaps at first it will be hard to remember and understand the mechanics, but experience is the best teacher.
  • Time. In order to avoid mistakes, think over all these details and strategize during the rounds and not in between. Remember that you only have 30 seconds between the rounds to make decisions, so always be one step ahead.
  • Inventory. Keep track of the items you get from creeps. Combined items give huge bonuses to your heroes.

What is Dota 2 Auto Chess?

https://preview.redd.it/vqkmhlu450w21.png?width=820&format=png&auto=webp&s=d9ac5ffefd8d1265455efa2d6cd0b3db535e5ef3

The list of all the chess pieces in Auto Chess can be found by clicking on a special button at the upper left corner of the screen.

https://preview.redd.it/hz3jwuwe50w21.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=a8bf53582906f76fc73cec6471ae7528a8476545
Different chess pieces come at different price levels, which are indicated by different colors. The more expensive a chess piece is, the lower the chances are of you getting it. The chances of acquiring chess pieces depends on your Courier’s level - basically, to get rare figures, you should level up your Courier!

https://preview.redd.it/6pekgmdh50w21.png?width=1405&format=png&auto=webp&s=2185829ca4c3428dcbe68f398deec9a4866b5ddb

Moreover, this combination deals good damage.

https://preview.redd.it/v9pd2iom50w21.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=6421416e597642e6d747bf33fff0415ae7a6d2a0
  • GOBLINS+MECHS. 3 goblins, 2 mechs (Clockwerk, Tinker, Timbersaw, Bounty Hunter). This combo is one of the most popular among players. The main drawback is that, at the start, all the pieces have minor damage, which is not enough to achieve the strategy where your Goblins and Mechs are buffed with a regeneration HP and armor bonus.

https://preview.redd.it/3p1s8jbo50w21.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=ea686ce69d59e942fc94c84bd174f3e05c580857
More on STARS ★ a little bit later.

https://preview.redd.it/igfx4pzp50w21.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=541fdacce8ae1eae1d0680dd97e405a6cb29b2e3
  • KNIGHTS+any piece. If you are lucky enough to have Knights at the start, keep them! A combination of 3 Knights is quite hard to beat at the very beginning because they have 40% chance to proc a damage-reducing shield for 3 sec. What’s more, Chaos Knight is both a Demon and a Knight and has 50% additional pure damage.

https://preview.redd.it/8bicnyjr50w21.png?width=1383&format=png&auto=webp&s=727c33bd09029dcd609e06a94964c65ae1e962d6

As soon as you have 50 gold, choose another strategy and start placing heroes on the board.

https://preview.redd.it/fbjql62u50w21.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=738253182776b3a74c229d158d4edd3139210eba
The winning streak strategy requires luck and good scouting and research on enemy pieces. Do it only if you have a close-to-perfect starting board. You will have to constantly strengthen your board to keep up the winning streak. To be able to get the pieces you need, you should be ready to spend gold on rerolls.

https://preview.redd.it/rglsjdav50w21.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=29bd19f342328c843c40848bc8dc6948af695460

  • (6) Assassins: All friendly assassins have a 15% chance to deal a critical hit of 450% damage

https://preview.redd.it/rj1cazl360w21.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=5b9b3b1c427e492d8ae1d3c235e287e8042afc57

The hierarchy is listed below. The Pawn is the basic rank for every player, while the Queen is the highest rank.
  1. Queen
  2. King
  3. Rook
  4. Bishop
  5. Knight

GOSU.AI hopes you have found this guide useful. We also suggest you to have a look at the list of videos of top-level Dota Auto Chess players below.
Good luck, grand master!

Aside from quantity, it looks like we've got some solid quality this week, so we should still have a great time!
Remember, you can submit feedback about the current game by typing !feedback in chat with your thoughts on the current game. I will make sure the developer gets your feedback!
Once the stream is over, I will begin work on ripping the videos and uploading them to Youtube. Once that's done, the Youtube links will be included in this post, so make sure to check back here later if you miss the main event!
I hope to see you all there, and I hope you all use !feedback to tell your fellow devs what you think of their games!
