2024.05.17 11:26 Matrix_030 Gap Year concern for DS-160 and VISA Interview

I graduated with my Bachelor's degree in 2023 and applied to 5 grad schools, I received an acceptance from one school (free application) that I didn't want to go to as I didn't like the overall program offered by that school, this was due to me having underwhelming profile, GRE and TOEFL scores. So, I decided to wait another year, focusing on improving my scores and profile (I was working on an internship and had a paper in the works when I was applying during my 2023 cycle).
I now have a better score with a published paper which I sent to the universities and an internship certificate which I was able to add to my SOP while applying to the schools and have received an admission from NYU for FALL 24. I am, however, concerned since I didn't get a job (I did apply) and about how the gap year might impact my visa interview and DS-160 process as I have mentioned I am a student along with the whole description that I graduated in 2023, and have been working on my profile since then.
My Interview is next month. Any guidance will be appreciated.

2024.05.17 11:20 Low-Competition-9557 Need help on my employer regarding my HMO and salary

I am employed by an insurance agent manager last January 2022 as an Admin Assistant, Based sa Employee Handbook that we signed, I am subjected to a performance review upon regularization (6mos) and annual performance evaluation and application for HMO. I got both within the given time frame (6mos) . Fast forward to my 1st year being employed, I did not get the annual performance evaluation and he said that "Sa June pa ulit since ang last increase mo is June" I don't know if i that is how "annual evaluation" works . I waited June 2023 for my increase AKA "performance evaluation" but laging napupush ng months. Yun pala kaya napupush was my employer decided to switch companies. Details were confidential he instructed me to signed an NDA. Worried about losing my job and being unemployed, I signed it. Told me "WE" were going to another company , all benefits intact and the promised "Salary Increase". I got sick last November 2023 and tried to use my HMO, coordinator said to talk to my employer because i was tagged as "not currently working" for the previous company , I have to pay full price for the consult and some tests. January 2024, i was scheduled by my employer for a meeting to discuss the "Performance evaluation". To my dismay, I only got 1k increase monthly to my salary which I waited 1 year and 6 mos .When asked about the HMO, he said "Naghahanap pa for all agents and staff" What should I do about this ? How do I bring this up to him ? Okay lang ba na tinanggap ko ung increase which is a year and a half late ?

2024.05.17 11:02 Apprehensive_Dog5431 Discord Images to OBS/Twitch stream

I've been looking for something like this for a long time and I am astounded and frustrated nobody has made anything like this. I found plenty of people asking for this, but no one actually showed a solution.
I stream with friends on twitch as we are in a discord call, and they will often post pictures in discord, but there was no way for me to easily show the picture on stream without toggling the entire discord window so twitch chat can actually see what we are talking about. What I wanted was some way for it to be automated, at least as much as possible.
Through the use of a custom discord bot, I was able to make something work.
Before I get into how to make this work, let me briefly explain how it works so you can tell if this is something you're willing to do. I will be highlighting all areas you need to fill out. The rest is mostly copy paste.
Discord Bot has reading access to a discord channel of your choice>a code tells the bot to monitor this discord channel for image links and image attachments>Upon detecting a new image, the bot will edit an HTML file somewhere on your computer with the link to the image along with some other things to make it readable for OBS>OBS uses that HTML file as a local browser source.
The only potential issue here that can benefit from some improvements is the source will not properly update unless you hide and then unhide the source. If its already hidden, simply unhiding it will prompt the correct image. (Just be sure the source has "Shutdown source when not visible" enabled, to allow it to update and take less resources while not visible) I simply made this a hotkey to easily toggle the source, however there is a way to create an OBS script that will automatically hide the source after a period of time, and reveal it upon updating, I was unsuccessful in this though.
To get this to work, you will only need to create 2 text files, paste some code, and change 3 lines to match your details so it properly links to the correct channel, bot, files, etc. I will highlight these things so you wont have to go searching.
1. CREATE YOUR DISCORD BOT
-Go to https://discord.com/developers/applications -Hit "New Application" at the top right, accept terms and name it whatever you want. -On the left under Settings/Installation be sure User Install and Guild Install are checked. -Navigate to the "Bot" tab on the left and turn OFF "Public Bot" and turn ON "Message Content Intent" -Head over to the "OAuth2" tab on the left. -Under "OAuth2 URL Generator" You will see a big list of "scopes" All you need is to check "bot" -A new portion will be revealed called "Bot Permissions". For simplicity sake since you can give it "Administrator". If you are concerned about security, you can check off only what would be needed like read messages and maybe read message history. This area you will have to experiment to see what is absolutely needed. -Copy the generated URL and paste it into your browser and select what server you would like to add it to. -Once added it should have all the needed permissions to do its job, but double check roles and default permissions to make sure its not conflicting with anything on your server. -Go back to the "Bot" tab on the left and hit the "Reset Token" button. You will be given a code. (Copy and paste this somewhere for you to refer to later.)
2. PYTHON (DONT PANIC) You barely need to mess with it.
-Head over to https://www.python.org/downloads/ and download the latest version. -When installing, make sure to check the box that says "Add Python X.X to PATH" during the installation process. This ensures that Python is added to your system's PATH environment variable, allowing you to run Python from the command line. (Just stay with me here, its not as bad as it sounds) Otherwise if you don't see this, its fine.
-Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
3. CREATE THE CODE (PASTE IT)
-Create a new text file and name it "discord_bot.py" (Be sure to change the file extension from .txt to .py) -Right click the file and hit "open with" and select notepad. -Go ahead and paste the following code into the file:
import discord import os import time import re TOKEN = 'YOUR BOT TOKEN HERE' CHANNEL_ID = 'YOUR CHANNEL ID HERE' TEXT_FILE_PATH = 'YOUR TEXT FILE PATH' # Create an instance of discord.Intents intents = discord.Intents.default() intents.messages = True intents.guilds = True intents.message_content = True # Pass intents to the discord.Client() constructor client = discord.Client(intents=intents) # CSS style to limit image dimensions CSS_STYLE = """ """ .event async def on_ready(): print(f'Logged in as {client.user}') .event async def on_message(message): if == int(CHANNEL_ID): print(f'Message received in correct channel: {message.content}') print(f'Attachments: {message.attachments}') if message.attachments or any(re.findall(r'(http[s]?:\/\/[^\s]+(\.jpg\.png\.jpeg))', message.content)): image_url = message.attachments[0].url if message.attachments else re.findall(r'(http[s]?:\/\/[^\s]+(\.jpg\.png\.jpeg))', message.content)[0][0] try: # Generate HTML content with image URL embedded in an tag html_content = f""" Show Image {CSS_STYLE} Include CSS style Image """ # Update the HTML file with the generated HTML content with open(TEXT_FILE_PATH, 'w') as file: file.write(html_content) print(f'HTML file updated with image URL: {image_url}') except Exception as e: print(f'Error updating HTML file: {e}') else: print('No attachments or image links found in the message') client.run(TOKEN)message.channel.id
-A few lines into the code you will see three lines that read:
'YOUR BOT TOKEN HERE' 'YOUR CHANNEL ID HERE' -and- 'YOUR TEXT FILE PATH'
-You need to replace these. Refer to your token you saved earlier and paste it in place of YOUR BOT TOKEN HERE. When you replace it, it should still have the (') at each end. Example: TOKEN = 'adnlkn34okln2oinmfdksanf342'
-For the Channel ID, head over to Discord>Settings(cogwheel bottom left)>advanced and turn on Developer Mode. -Head over to the Server where you want OBS to grab from and where you invited the bot. -Right click the text Channel you want OBS to grab pictures from and hit "Copy Channel ID" -Go back to the text file with the code and paste the ID you just copied place of YOUR CHANNEL ID HERE. (again make sure not to delete ' ' in the process.
So far we have the Bot Token and the Channel ID done.
-We need to create another text file. Create one and find a place to save it where you'll remember it. Somewhere like your documents folder will work fine. -Name it whatever you want, but be sure to save it as a .HTML file, rather than a .txt file. (for the sake of the tutorial, lets assume you named it "showimage.html" ) *-*Right click the html file you just made and click properties -Here you can see the file "Location". Go ahead and copy it. -Go back to that discord_bot.py file and replace YOUR TEXT FILE PATH with the address you just copied.
HOWEVER: BE SURE TO ADD EXTRA SLASHES TO THIS. I DONT KNOW WHY BUT ITS NEEDED. Example: TEXT_FILE_PATH = 'C:\\Users\\YOURNAME\\OneDrive\\Desktop'
There. The code is finished so go ahead and save it. Now you need to implement it into OBS
4. OBS BROWSER SOURCE
-Go ahead and open OBS. Go to your desired Scene and create a new Source, and make it a Browser Source. -I made the width and height 600x600, but you can adjust it once we get a picture on screen. -Toggle ON "Local File" and "Shutdown source when not visible" -For the local file, browse your computer for that "showimage.html" file we made earlier and select it.
5. (FINAL) LAUNCH THE BOT
We are almost done. You will have to launch this bot every time you want this image thing to work, so maybe save this last part on a note.
-Type CMD in your start menu on windows. -Right click "Command Prompt" and hit "Run as administrator" -Navigate to where the discord_bot.py file you made was saved. You can do this by typing "cd" followed by the address and hitting enter
Example: cd C:\Users\YOURNAME\OneDrive\Desktop Enter\*
-Then type: python discord_bot.py Enter\*
You should see a few lines of text that say: "Logged in as (whatever your bot name is)"
You're done!
When someone posts a link to an image, or uploads one directly to your desired channel, the bot will create a link for the obs source to refer to, and it should pop up in your scene, assuming its visible. If you still dont see anything, try restarting OBS and or go into the source properties, scroll down, and click the "refresh cache of current page" button at the bottom. Keep in mind the picture will not update unless you force the source to refresh somehow. If you dont want to keep going back to obs to hide/unhide the source to update it, you can set a hotkey to it, create an OBS script, or use a separate program like streamerbot to automate the process to your liking.
This was a huge pain in the ass to do, and I dont want anyone to go through what I did, so I wanted to have it all in a janky guide to get people started. Also I made it so the pictures have a minimum and maximum w/h size so small images arent so darn small, and big ones dont take up so much space. You can adjust this in the .py file, just be sure to close command prompt and start the bot again for the changes to go through.
Please let me know if you guys have any questions or suggestions, and Ill try my best to help/ respond. I hope someone makes use of this and it pops up in search results because I couldnt find anything like this anywhere.

2024.05.17 10:35 IceGoat10 Undergrad GPA for MSCS Applications

Hey, I just finished my 1st year of uni at my state school with a 4.0 in computer science.
I’m thinking about applying to transfer to a better school during the next transfer cycle (transferring for my 3rd year)(reasons for transfer: my school isn’t fun and also low ranked ~t80)
My goal is to go to grad school and work in AI/ML engineering so…
How much difference would it make for grad school applications to have an undergrad gpa of 4.0 at a lower ranked school vs a 3.7-3.8 at a highly ranked school?
Also, for working in AI/ML, should I get a masters or a phd?
Also, should I go straight from undergrad to grad school or should I get a job after undergrad first and then go to grad school?

How much difference would it make for grad school applications to have an undergrad gpa of 4.0 at a lower ranked school vs a 3.7-3.8 at a highly ranked school?
Also, for working in AI/ML, should I get a masters or a phd?
Also, should I go straight from undergrad to grad school or should I get a job after undergrad first and then go to grad school?

2024.05.17 10:33 Bulky_Medicine_7116 Tired of Sales Engineering / Solutions Architect role. Other careers? Is this not a smart move.

I've been in an SE capacity most of my career - about 10 years now. I'm a solutions architect breaking $200k a year in the bay area selling CRM SaaS and PaaS but I'm losing steam. I was 100% remote but we recently became hybrid. We got acquired by a soul crushing PE firm and they keep changing strategy every quarter and the constant mandatory training and product certifications and complex processes are killing me inside. I'm starting to get tired of giving demos and the presales role altogether. The combo of bad processes, rushing everything last minute, and dealing with pushy sales people at this company is burning me out.
I've learned I'm a creature of routine and while I'd prefer a 100% remote role, I don't mind a hybrid role. I'm currently working an avg of 45 hours per week and I want something consistent and where I can coast at 40 hrs per week. I'm fortunate to still be employed but this current tech job climate is pretty terrible and unemployed SEs seem to be having a rough time out there.
Something I've always disliked about this job - the knowledge you learn for each employer is is often niche and is usually only applicable for the company you work at. Interviewing for another company means you will have to invest your own nights and weekends to learn their product inside and out. The interview process for SE roles are also brutal - you spend all this time learning a company's tech , then have to go through so many rounds of interviews with tech exercises, panel interviews, culture fit, meet the VPs, etc. After that huge investment of time learning the product you might get rejected. That time is wasted and you'll likely never use it again unless you stay within an industry. Rinse and repeat for the next company. Sometimes I wish I had a job where the knowledge stays relevant across the industry.
With that said, does anyone have ideas on lateral moves out of presales where the skillsets translate well. I'm even considering leaving tech for something more stable and less stressful. Willing to take a pay cut at this point. I'm looking for: - consistent 40 hrs per week - pays at least $170k+ annually - offers mostly if not 100% remote work - is recession proof or resilient or in demand right now
I'm evaluating other consulting gigs, analyst roles, government jobs, product management, PMM. Have even considered going into the trades where it's unionized for job security at this point. Any insights would be appreciated.
Tldr - tired of presales. Looking for an out while leveraging the skills you gain from this role. Please share your ideas. If you think this is a dumb decision, would also love to hear your perspective.

2024.05.17 10:27 Travelbug1987 The Job Market Is Insane Everywhere

I've been living in the Netherlands for almost a year and a half and since I hit the ground I've been learning dutch & trying to find a job. I did not anticipate it would take this long to find employment. I've applied for positions via staffing agencies, recruiters and looking on job boards on my own in the following categories administrative, customer service, contract management & travel. My previous employers have been Disney, Universal, Vitol Oil & Gas, First Investors Financial and AAA Texas. At this point I've lost count of the number of companies I've applied to. Yet I've only managed to get 2 interviews in the time I've been here. The vast majority of the companies I've applied to I dont hear from at all even after sending a follow-up email about my application. And everytime they say they like me and my work history but they go with another candidate because I'm "over qualified" or "dont have enough customer service experience". Which for clarity makes absolutely no sense to me given I was with my last employer for almost 10 years and my position was combo of customer service & administrative duties. I've always had a job since I was 18 years old so not working just doesn't feel right to me.
Here in the Netherlands they have to pay you based on your age. Legally the older you are the more they have to pay you. I was recently told that the "over qualified" reasoning is because of my age and companies would need to pay me more. I'm at the point where I'm deeply discouraged and I feel like a complete and utter failure as a person. Depression is starting to set in and Idk if I will make it out of the hole this time.

2024.05.17 10:17 carminibus feeling really lost navigating job accommodations

I was diagnosed as an adult/after I graduated college and while I had a lot of coping skills for school, I feel really lost navigating job accommodations.
Specifically, I am most impacted in terms of applying for jobs. I have a lot of experience and am trying to start applying for jobs but it’s really hard to start when I feel like it’s all just a test that I’m designed to fail and they probably know 5 seconds into the interview that they’re going to reject me but they won’t tell me until much later.
Does anyone have any advice in terms of determining and requesting reasonable accommodations during the job application process? And does requesting accommodations put you at a disadvantage compared to other applicants?

Manpasand was an accounting fraud with beverages on the side
Original Source: https://boringmoney.in/p/manpasand-an-accounting-fraud (my newsletter Boring Money. Do visit the original link and subscribe if you'd like to receive similar posts directly in your inbox)

Let’s say you’re a company that wants to commit an elaborate fraud. What is the most egregious fraud that you can think of?
Maybe let’s not start with egregious. Let’s start with something simple! Here’s something that’s reasonably common:
  1. Pay people to buy your product (or like give them huge discounts or whatever). Inflate your revenue. Lie about your actual customers.
  2. Hype your company up. Do an IPO, take your company public. Sell some of your own stock.
  3. Slowly try fixing your numbers. If you happen to succeed, that’s great! You win. If you don’t succeed, you still win? You’ve done your IPO and sold some stock. That’s a lot of money.
This is the simple kind of fraud, which also makes it difficult to identify. You might have to talk to the company’s customers, read the fine print in its disclosures, do sanity checks of its financials, that sort of stuff. It’s tough to catch the simple kind of fraud, which is also why so much of it exists in the form of whispers and rumours without ever getting proven.
Now let’s go egregious:
  1. Why pay people to buy your product? Hell, why even have a product? Just manifest in your imagination that there are hundreds of thousands of people buying whatever you’re selling and write it down.
  2. Hype your company up! Do an IPO, sell some stock. This part remains the same.
  3. Don’t bother fixing your numbers. Instead, keep publishing imaginary revenue figures. Keep selling stock to public investors. Publish your financials every quarter with whatever numbers you like.
If you do this, there’s only so far you can go. Eventually, your hype will attract attention and someone might figure out that both your customers and product were creative imagination.
Here’s a SEBI order from late in April about Manpasand Beverages. Manpasand used to be a beverages company based in Gujarat. In 2019 the company shut down because it got caught in a bunch of frauds. It’s only now that SEBI published the details of what was happening. Probably best summarised by fund manager Amit Mantri: [1]
https://preview.redd.it/o85shr8p3y0d1.jpg?width=603&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=26ace208d28eae2bb2401449f9b1dcc6bd1eefd0

Fake it till you make it (or don’t)

Manpasand faked its revenue (of course). It also faked its expenses, customers, vendors, tax liabilities, etc. How did it get away with doing this stuff? I don’t know, someone’s gotta ask Deloitte. They were Manpasand’s auditor for eight years, resigning only in 2018. The company’s fraud came out officially in 2019—Deloitte, whose job was to make sure the books were right and also had access to all the inside information, figured that something was off only a year earlier!
Anyway, SEBI appointed its own auditor to figure out what was wrong with Manpasand’s accounts and the auditor came back with a bunch of stuff. [2]
Here’s the bit about Manpasand inflating its revenue. From SEBI’s order:
… CGST vide letter dated July 07, 2019, inter alia, informed that Manpasand had shown inflated sales figure in its balance sheet by way of receipt/ supply of fake invoices without actual receipt/ supply of goods. It was further informed in the said letter that Manpasand had floated 38 bogus/paper firms to inflate its turnover and that inward and outward transactions made with such bogus firms amount to Rs.188.48 Crore and Rs. 691.30 Crore, respectively.
Manpasand created 38 different companies and it both “sold” its products to those companies as well as “bought” stuff from some of them. Basically, Manpasand created real companies to play the role of its customers and vendors.
… it was observed that the parties with whom transactions amounting to Rs.29.84 Crore were entered into, were not registered for dealing in the said goods/products being manufactured by the Company. Further, there was non-receipt of sale considerations and debtors balance were adjusted by passing journal entries
Manpasand was a beverages company that was selling stuff to its customers. Traditionally a company like Manpasand might have distributors as customers but Manpasand’s customers were registered as something else entirely (I do wonder what, the order doesn’t mention it). These are fake customers that Manpasand created out of thin air. Establishing companies is quite a bit of effort! Why half-ass the part where you select the “business type”? I sort of understand though. I’ve done it too. Put so much effort into something that you’re bored by the end that you muck it up.
I’m kidding! The real reason is probably that Manpasand wouldn’t have actually created these fake companies itself. There would be a middleman who would have them made in advance, all ready to go whenever needed to do fraud.
Manpasand propped up its sales as well as its expenses by pretty much just funnelling money around from one entity to the other. In some instances, it wouldn’t even move real money around. It would just note down that it had to pay one company, and had to also collect payments from another company, and then cancel each other out. Manpasand was running its accounts on Splitwise.
In general, there is nothing wrong with a company having such set-off arrangements. If you know your creditor owes money to your debtor, sure, cancel those transactions out. But how likely is it that a company’s suppliers and distributors know each other? And transact with each other?
This post is public so feel free to share it.

All except death and taxes

If you’re planning to do some accounting fraud, here’s something to keep in mind. I mean, I’m not not recommending that you do fraud, but if you do have your mind made up I might as well pass this along. Fake your sales, that’s fine. Fake your expenses, that’s fine too. But don’t fake your taxes, those guys will come after you.
In 2019 right before Manpasand shut down, GST officials raided its offices and arrested the CEO, CFO and a director. If you think about it, one of the reasons Manpasand got away with its fraud for as long as it did was that its accounts looked reasonably realistic. Deloitte made sure of that! Manpasand didn’t just arbitrarily put in fake numbers, oh no. It showed transactions to back them up with actual companies.
But any sales or purchases bring with it a cute goods and services tax, and the GST folks don’t care all that much about the fact that your sales are real. They’d like their share anyway. And not the GST you owe them, but because of how GST works, they would also want the GST your vendors (and your vendors’ vendors) might owe them.
GST has this magical thing called “input tax credit” which is basically the GST council giving you magic points every time you pay GST as a customer. Say, you buy some glass to make some marbles. You pay GST when you buy that glass, and you get some magic points. When you sell your freshly manufactured marbles, you collect GST from your customers and can redeem those magic points which you got earlier to reduce the GST you actually pay. (This isn’t tax advice so don’t come after me if you mess up your taxes because of anything you read here.)
These points are nice because they help save tax. But a basic requirement to use these points is that the company you bought your glass from has to have paid their fair share of GST in the first place! You only get the points if they’ve paid their tax! In Manpasand’s case the vendors it was dealing with existed solely for the purpose of enabling accounting fraud. Of course they weren’t going to be paying any tax. And yet Manpasand was claiming the magic points and reducing the GST it paid. These fake magic points is how the GST people figured out that there was something very wrong happening.
If the GST raid hadn’t happened, would Manpasand have survived as a company? Absolutely not. But would it have survived longer than it did? Probably.

Roll over, it’s a takeover

Things have already been a bit bizarre but what follows next is absolutely basket case. Here’s a section of Manpasand’s response to SEBI. From SEBI’s order:
The Company is a victim of a pre-planned, fraudulent scheme and conspiracy perpetrated by Finquest Financial Solutions Pvt Ltd (FINQUEST) wherein under the garb of promise to provide working capital worth Rs.100 Crores, six documents were executed by and between MBL & FINQUEST. Within a span of two and a half months, it was clear that this entire so called transaction of providing working capital loan was nothing but a mere play to gain the entire control of MBL which is having asset base of around Rs.625 Crores…
Finquest is an NBFC that lent money to Manpasand right after the GST raid happened and its officials were all in jail. Manpasand is claiming that Finquest’s goal wasn’t to just lend to the company and earn an interest income out of it, but to take over the company itself. Manpasand claims that Finquest defrauded it and even calls whatever they did a “hostile takeover”.
Let’s humour this idea for a bit. If you’re a listed company worried about a hostile takeover, you’d look at who’s buying your stock. That’s the normal way for hostile takeovers to work. You wake up one day to realise that Elon owns 9% of your and immediately fall into a state of panic. If you don’t own enough of your company, Elon just might.
Another hostile takeover could be by a distressed debt investor. You may have taken a loan from some banks or whoever some time back. The banks would’ve sold your loans to outside investors. But then because you’re in tough times, the investors would want to rid themselves of your loans at a discount. This distressed debt is then caught by investors trained in the art of recovering dollars from pennies. If you can’t repay your loans to these guys, they would be more than happy to squeeze it out of you.
This is what happened with Byju’s US unit. But really, hostile takeovers aren’t common with distressed debt investors. They don’t want to run your company! They want their money back with some (a lot) of interest. [3]
Finquest lent to Manpasand, it didn’t buy its stock. So maybe this was the second kind of hostile takeover, the distressed debt kind? Well, here’s Abhishek Singh, then director of Manpasand in an interview with Business Today back in 2019:
Business Today: Dhirendra Singh [the CEO] has accused Finquest of a hostile takeover bid, while Finquest claims that it was always mentioned in the term-sheet that the company will be managed by a professional team until its money was parked with you. It will be nice to get your side of the story.
Singh: Whatever amount has been transferred by the Finquest in the bank account of MBL was done in the new account opened by FFSPL's representatives in the name of MBL. The control of this new bank account lies with FFSPL's representatives. FFSPL was allowed operational access to business of MBL and not financial access, as per the term sheet dated July 3, 2019.
…As per the term sheet dated July 3, 2019, FFSPL had right to nominate two directors on the Board of Directors of MBL, which shall constitute minimum one-third strength of the Board. Pursuant to this clause, FFSPL appointed three directors instead of two. The total strength of the board became six directors, one-third of this comes to two. Thus, one more director being a nominee of FFSPL was appointed.
… What? Manpasand borrowed money from Finquest but the bank account where the money came in was controlled by Finquest? And Finquest got “operational access” (whatever that means) as well as a third of Manpasand’s board seats? This isn’t a hostile takeover! It’s a lamblike takeover.
Honestly, I get it. Manpasand’s CEO and others were in jail. The company needed money. The only lender willing to lend to a shady company whose executives are in jail would be a shady lender. And that shady lender was Finquest—which, by the way, had done something similar before—but Manpasand took what it got.
If there’s a second “don’t do this if you’re doing fraud” lesson in this, it’s this. Don’t borrow from a loan shark!
Footnotes
[1] A nice factoid is that Amit Mantri was the first to point out that Manpasand was manipulating its numbers all the way back in 2016. They did some really good on-ground research!
[2] The auditor that SEBI assigned to do this, Chokshi & Chokshi, came back with 12 findings from Manpasand’s accounts. But I think I found a couple of mistakes? It wouldn’t in any way affect SEBI’s conclusion on Manpasand, but I find it funny that a story which is essentially about an auditor’s massive failure to do its job also has an auditor that probably wasn’t too careful themselves? I’ll probably write about this in a future post.
[3] A distressed debt investor would prefer to take over a company to be able to put it into bankruptcy so that it can sell the company’s assets and recover its money. That’s very different from what the kind of takeover that Elon did of Twitter.

The Future of Programming: Software Development, Computer Science, Code, and AI
Dear Community, I’d like to initiate a discussion today about the future of programming and application development. We live in an era where there is more code than developers can write, yet we are faced with the question of replaceability by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Take, for instance, the statement by NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, who recommends not starting to learn programming anymore. Or Jim Keller, who predicts that in 10 years, all software could be replaced by AI. These statements can be perplexing, especially when considering that new technologies have often led to new jobs in the past, even if they initially automated existing ones. In Germany, we are experiencing a shortage of skilled workers, raising the question of whether it makes sense to pursue a career as an IT specialist in application development or software development. How do you computer scientists see this? What perspectives do you see for the future? Current trends in AI suggest that it might not be impossible to replace developers in the future. Yet, at the same time, the demand for IT jobs could increase as new technologies and applications emerge. Developers might become architects of the digital world, focusing less on coding itself and more on designing complex systems. What do you think? How will the role of developers change, and what new opportunities might open up?

2024.05.17 10:00 Annual-Indication-48 Which do I choose: Passion or Security?

Both my parents are professionals and have white collar jobs. They’ve worked hard their entire adult lives to give us comfortable lives. We wanted for little growing up. All things considered, I would say we’re a typical middle to upper-middle class, Filipino family.
I graduated from UPLB in 2020. I’ve held 3 jobs in total since I graduated, none of which I stayed in for over a year. I landed my first job thanks to a family connection. It was well-paying considering it was my first job, but there were logistical issues at play that made it unsustainable for me to stay. After that, I got myself a job in sales at a major developer. I stayed for almost a year, but left after getting frustrated and disheartened for not having made a single sale in the time I spent there. Not long after, I took another job in sales, but this time in an industry I was passionate about—food. I learned a lot and met a lot of new, interesting people, which has always been one of my biggest motivators.
I recently left my last job because my mom wants me to take up a second degree, which even if the university decides to credit the applicable units I took towards my first degree, will still take at least 5.5 years. Also, it’s not a program or a career I feel I would enjoy, but my mom keeps telling me we all have to make sacrifices to get the things we want out of life. And she’s right, but I don’t see why it has to come at the cost of my own happiness.
Am I being shortsighted and naive for wanting to pursue my passion for food instead of choosing a career that will give me security? I’m worried that I might only be wanting to pursue my passion because, at the back of my mind, I feel that my parents will catch me if I stumble, which is a thought I want to banish from my mind. I realize how unfair it is to them especially since they’ve supported me my entire life. Even when I was working, they paid for almost all of my living expenses, and I guess I feel afraid that if I do decide to follow my dreams and work in the food industry, I wouldn’t be able to sustain the lifestyle I’ve grown used to. I guess what I’m saying is that I realize it takes immense talent to make it big as a chef. At least big enough to get the kind of notoriety I associate with success, and I just don’t know if I have what it takes, but I know I’m passionate about it. But passion isn’t going to pay the bills.
