Anyone else get celebrity comparisons that they never would’ve suspected?? I didn’t realize how people saw me until the celebrity comparisons I’ve gotten over the years that keep making me feel insecure because they are famously unattractive or less than attractive women. And it’s all made me realize I must have a very long horse face with small eyes, which I didn’t realize just looking at myself. The celebrities I’ve gotten over the years include:
-Sandra Oh -Michelle Branch -Vanessa Carlton -Tia and Tamara Mowry -Patricia Heaton -Joanna Gaines -Sarah Jessica Parker
Despite the many Asian celebrity comparisons, I am actually a Latina woman with no blonde hair or blue eyes or curly hair so with the SJP comparison, I can only think it was a horse face comparison. I just wish people could’ve kept those thoughts to themselves because every time I get a new one, it makes me go down the rabbit hole all over again. No matter how good I might feel about myself, it reminds me how people actually see me. It’s made my self esteem plummet more than it ever would’ve otherwise.

so yesterday i saw this show at the top of netflix and i didn't recognize it, didn't think i'd ever seen it before. this morning it was at the top of my netflix again so i clicked it on a whim. so it goes to the show page and a bigger picture comes up and suddenly the names 'tia and tamara mowry' come into my mind and i'm like whoa that's weird. so i click to play the first episode and lo and behold, that's their names. i guess i watched it when i was growing up on disney channel and kinda forgot. i think the reason i didn't remember initially was because i thought it was called 'tia and tamara' or something. but anyway, i'm a few episodes in and it's all coming back to me. the theme song, roger, the mom and dad, etc. i'm really liking the parents relationship and the mom in particular is great. i'm enjoying the show a lot even now as an adult, 15-20 years later, super cool it came to netflix and i could rediscover it.

Premise

The eighth season of the show got off to a bit of a rocky start. You see, it was originally planned to be an All-Stars season, like season eight of Survivor was. When that season became too bitter and personal, the producers decided to do something different. Their first idea was to make it a Family Edition. What that means is that they would cast families of four and lower the age limit to allow children as young as eight to participate.
This would have been a disaster, not least of which being that having children on would mean having to lower the difficulty of the tasks so they could participate more easily. Also, the logistics would have meant not leaving the North American continent, maybe just going to Central America. However, this changed when someone saw an interview with Selena (Quintanilla-Perez, who survives in this timeline unlike her namesake Gomez) where she mentioned how much she loves the show.
And that's where the idea for this season comes from: Have 11 teams of celebrities race for charity. When fans heard this, they were leery especially after the cast was revealed. Nonetheless, they were willing to give it a chance. It took a lot of negotiation to get the cast together; however, Selena couldn't make it as she had a tour scheduled for the month that the race was being filmed (dammit). Starting this season, racers who come in last, instead of losing their money and luggage, are told that if they don't come in first in the next leg, they will incur an automatic 30 minute penalty. Also no prizes will be given out at the end of each leg like usual. Filming was from early to late July 2005.

1.) Lucy and Alex Liu: Actress and her older brother. She is most famous as Trinity in the Matrix movies and Alex Mundy in Charlie's Angels. They are racing for UNICEF.
2.) Tia and Tamara Mowry: Twin sisters. They are probably most famous for the show Step by Step. Born again Christians, they want to use the money for various Christian charities.
3.) George and Kelly Carlin: Father and daughter. A comedian and his actress daughter, George is a somewhat controversial addition seeing as he just got out of rehab prior to coming on the show. Kelly had just finished her first one woman show at the time. They would donate the winnings to cancer research.
4.) Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love: This season's bickering couple. Though not as bad as some other couples that have been on the show, they were worst than most. They were raising money for Planned Parenthood and the American Foundation for AIDS research.
5.) Marcus and Damon Allen: Brothers and football players. They're racing for domestic abuse victims.
6.) David Hyde Pierce and Brian Hargrove: Actor and his life partner. Pierce is known as Niles Crane on Fraser and Hargrove is a producer. These two and George Carlin were funny together. They are racing for the Alzheimer's Association.
7.) Linda and Leslie Hamilton: Another set of twin sisters. Linda Hamilton is Sarah Conner and Captain Nicole Janeway and Leslie is a professional stunt person. They are racing for the National Institute of Mental Health.
8.) Donny and Marie Osmond: Brother and sister singers. They are racing for the National Association for the Deaf.
9.) Paul Newman and Robert Redford: Friends. They are this season's old person team. They are racing for The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp and the National Resources Defense Council.
10.) Phil and Brynn Hartman: Married Couple. You might remember Phil from such things as The Simpsons and Newsradio. They are racing for Second City.

One thing I have always enjoyed about videogames is the montages that people come up with. Some are professional editors but most are like me, just hobbyists with iMovie or some other simple editing software...and wild imaginations.
I've done a few but my most recent one is my case study for what really went into making it so that I can pull back the curtain on what REALLY goes on in the heads of people like me.

The Idea Crimson Days/Doubles sold itself on dating which inevitably meant lots of disappointment before finding the right partner. I am one of those people who literally thinks in songs....a song always pops into my head when something happens.
Justin Bieber's "Sorry" came to mind first and started off the creative juices. Believe it or not, my plan was to make an entire montage to that song, knowing full well it would be polarizing but also be highly visible in Google/YouTube searches and also fit the theme.
Then I played Crimson Doubles and got 3 new emotes - Cower, Slow Clap and Sorrow.
The minute I got Sorrow I knew I had to find a way to include a Baby come back audio clip. Thus began the storyboarding process to create a sensible intro that wasn't too long but told the story of a lonely guardian in the Tower searching for love, getting rejected and then finding a partner.
The Shot List Game clips are easy to get, they just happen and you click record that. The scenes I needed for the intro needed to actually be planned and I needed to know what to set out to record (I've scene enough behind-the-scenes documentaries to know that).
I wrote out the scene sequences in a notebook and thought of appropriate songs. Then I went to the Tower to see what would happen.
Act 1 Scene: Waiting in vain This was easy since I just needed to find some people in the Tower dancing (this is Destiny!) and then equip the free No emote. It took less than 2 minutes within landing in the Tower. I had already chosen the Bob Marley and the Wailers song (I'm born and raised in Jamaica so it came to mind first).
Scene: Is this love? 10 minutes after recording the first scene I was posing for a photo and ShankDemNoobz, some random player, jumps into my shot and starts dancing. I'm a male hunter wearing a Crimson Days shader and this guardian is a female hunter wearing what seems to be red.
Gold!
Now I had to follow them and use the yes emote then see what happens. I was expecting to get a date honestly. Having the charm emote was bonus and then when the ghost came out and Shank vanished I was jumping for joy....but I didn't have the Sorrow emote as yet so all I could do was save the clip.
The next day I got the emote from a package and immediately went back to the Tower, positioned myself as best as possible to line up with the video then recorded the grief part.
I also knew Bob Marley and the Wailers' Is this love? would be the audio for this scene.
Act 2 Scene: Standing Out No one was approaching me so I figured playing with the purple ball would definitely draw attention to me an yield results. nate n ben quickly sent me an invite and we were ready for our first date.
We actually played a few games and had some wins but the first one was tough. It also made perfect sense for the video.
I knew I wanted the song with that breathing sound but didn't know the name so I went to Google to look at the soundtrack for 50 First Dates figuring that it would be on there....and sure thing...it was there!
Scene: Heartbreaker When we lost the first match my brain flipped to Mariah Carey's Heartbreaker because my wife is a HUGE Mariah Carey fan. All I needed was the loss screen because I didn't want the setup to be too long.
Scene: Ask A friend iAgony is actually who I played most of Crimson Doubles with and we had to go back into the Tower last night to shoot this scene. I equipped the point emote while he used the yes emote. Then I had to switch to the cheer emote and edit the two together.
I realized my musical choices were showing that I was born in 1981 and so grabbed a recent hit that happened to have a Jamaican singer - Cheerleader by Omi (yes I am very proud of Jamaica's musical impact on the world).
The scene needed to move to Act 3 and the transition song that came to mind was Third World's Now that we've found love, again a Jamaican group with international fame.
ACT 3 The scenes were recorded before I thought about the montage and so I just needed a song to dictate the pace and edits. However, I was still planning to use Justin Bieber's Sorry for the rest of the video.
Then it hit me while cataloging the scenes: Sorry should cut into the main song when I do something stupid and die. Now what song to use?
My 80's brain went to work and thought Airwolf then I was like...A-Team! The movie was successful so it crossed generations and the theme was perfect for Crimson Doubles!
Once I imported the song I got to work moving scenes around, trimming and making sure a range of weapons were shown. I wanted Act 3 to start off positive but quickly go downhill, then get moving again, ending with a nice crescendo...the grenade stick.
I thought of including some record scratches for the songs ending but felt it was too much work to do in iMovie.
Now I needed to have an overall theme and name. I decided that since there was no talking it was like a film from the Silent era with music and action on screen conveying the story (which I think is much harder to do).
So I went looking for an image that looked like old silent films so I could create appropriate title cards.
The name then came to me - Double The Fun, which then reminded me of an old Doublemint commercial with Tia and Tamara Mowry of Sister, Sister fame (I really am an 80s child!). I used audio from a more vintage one instead.
I really loved it.
I asked my wife to take a look even though she isn't a Destiny fan (She played Halo 2) and isn't a big fan of me making montages. When she laugh out loud at the baby come back scene and then the heartbreaker scene I knew I had done something right.
That edit went live for feedback and my best friend el Rolio suggested record scratches for the songs (facepalm) and Halo Grunt "Yay" audio for the headshots.
Done!
This was over the course of the last 3 days including actually playing. When I slept I was dreaming about the potential montage. In my spare time I listened to other musical tracks to ensure my first choices were on the money.
I am pleased with the final product and hope this story inspires you to make your own or at least appreciate what really goes into people making montages.
