In the last couple of years, I've gotten really into roguelikes and after a youtuber recommended playing Inscryption blind, I decided to pick it up. All I was told is that it's sort of a roguelite cardgame, but that also discussing the game would spoil/ruin the experience. I'm going to discuss the game in detail, but I also completely disagree with the idea that knowing about the game ruins the experience, so proceed at your own caution.
What kind of game is Inscryption? To put it simply, it's a really well-done creepy pasta game (think Sonic.exe with an actual budget). The game is structured by having a section of playing a version of Inscryption followed by some pretty campy FMV clips. This also immediately addresses my biggest problem with the game, and that is that every version of Inscryption is less interesting than the last. The first version is a mix between a roguelike and card game and has excellent TTRPG like vibes. The gameplay is fun, although having to repeat the same bosses becomes a bit of slog. I also had the bad luck of not finding the filmroll until after I defeated Leshy for the first time and then not getting another run to that point until hours later. Most of the puzzles in the cabin are also relatively easy, although I'm still not 100% sure I completely understand how the cabinet locks work. Everything in Act I is fine, nothing stands out as either particularly good or bad, just a nice experience that doesn't overstay it's welcome.
I don't really know where to put this, so I'm just going to shove it in here awkwardly and hope you think it's an artistic choice. The FMVs are in my opinion the worst part of the game, which is kind of impressive because Act III exists. In the FMVs you follow this guy named Luke Carder, who has a [legally distinct from youtube] channel where he opens card packs. He finds a very rare pack from Inscryption that leads him to a floppy disk that was buried in the woods with a computer version of Inscryption.
And thus starts Act II, most of the personality and art style of Act I is replaced by boring, washed-out pixel art. They also add a bunch of mechanics that they don't introduce, but you also don't really need to know these mechanics as this act is so easy that losing genuinely takes effort. Apparently it was P03's plan all along to have you defeat everyone so they could take over Inscryption and you just helped them by playing a very boring card game and solving what I think are supposed to be puzzles.
Snap back to Luke. He's been trying to figure out where this game came from and who made it. This is the reason I want to talk about Inscryption. While I'm pretty familiar with creepy pasta tropes, I am not and never was a creepy pasta fan. I do know enough that if someone finds a mysterious floppy disk burried in the woods, it's definitely haunted/cursed and is going to make the life of our protagonist much much worse. However, because the game was so wildly praised but also not talked about for fear of spoilers I assumed there was going to be a third layer. Something beyond the glitch effects and developers dying in mysterious fires.
You trudge through Act III, which I think is bad by design although that doesn't make it less bad, hope quickly dwindling that Inscryption can be anything more than a creepy pasta game which serves as a badly disguised metaphor about the history of games in general. You help P03 and then betray P03, because well because that's what you're supposed to do. You beat the game, the achievement even said so and you get the last set of FMVs. As you watch how Luke gets shot by shady figure in a suit and glasses because he did not want to handover Inscryption, all I could think about is why people were afraid of talking about any of this. The story is so predictable that I assumed there had to be some extra twist because otherwise why would people be so cagey about it.
You might read all this and come to the conclusion that I think Inscryption is a bad game. I was fairly negative in this post, but I don't think it's a bad game. Disliking something and thinking it's bad are two very different things. Inscryption is above all a love letter to creepy pasta. However if you don't really care about creepy pasta, the gameplay really doesn't save it, especially as Act II and III seem to be designed to make you want to stop playing Inscryption.

I'm on my second reread of Network Effect (it's so good!!) but this part still doesn't make sense to me:
From Chapter 8: The message packet with the World Hoppers video clip had been sent through ART’s internal comm before it went down, presumably not long after ART hid a backup copy of itself passcode-protected by my hard feed address. ART had been expecting me to be aboard at some point to run its emergency code, which would uncompress the backup and reload it into its hardware. Which meant it had sent the Targets to find me in Preservation space and given them the ability to track me via the comm I had stashed in my rib compartment. Which meant ART had been conscious and capable of affecting events during the attack on our facility and baseship.
Why is Murderbot assuming that ART could have affected events during the attack? I thought ART had been deleted by that point. Otherwise surely it would have helped somehow during the attack.

So to start this off, about me, and then what I'm looking for! so,

My biggest hobbies are painting 🎨 and anything art related. i love riding my bike, i love animals, movies, books, whimsical and occult, mythology, faeries etc. shows, sweepstakes, making people smile, connecting with people, making friends. There is a specific clip that I have not been able to get out of my head for probably a decade now and I have not seen it since nor know what it is from. I think I originally saw it on tumblr around 2013.
If I am remembering correctly, it was an anime with the retro art style making me assume it is from the 90s. The clip showed two men in an alleyway at night. I think they were fighting when one of the men controls the other man’s body through some sort of invisible power. The controlled man’s hands are contorted in a grotesque way. This is all I remember of it. The caption on tumblr said something along the lines of “the original bloodbending”.
Could someone help me identify this?

I remember when I was younger, I watched something from my grandma’s TV — a show/series of clips on a sort of lifestyle channel. I vaguely remember 2 clips that to this day stuck with me, and I hope the awesome sleuths on the Internet can help me find where they’re from 🥹🙏:

1. A chubby teen girl in a swimsuit+shades is on this quaint boat on a lake to draw nature ✍️. Suddenly, a boy surfaces from the water and kinda swims around her boat. Then he swims away and disappears. The next day, the girl returns to the lake in the hopes of seeing the boy again. And then she does see him, coming from below the water again. This time, he wordlessly invites her to swim, and she dives into the water. The last cutscene is that of the boat, with the girl’s art materials left behind, floating on the lake. It’s implied that the girl never came back. 🛶🎨🌊
   
2. A criminal escapes from the police and hides inside the attic/upper floor of some sort of farm/barn. A little girl — appearing to be the daughter of the family who owns the farm/barn — stumbles upon him. He makes a shushing motion, wordlessly urging the little girl not to snitch. And she doesn’t snitch. Instead, every day, she starts to bring him apples and she doesn’t seem to know that he’s a fugitive. The man warms up to the little girl and even makes funny faces to make her laugh. Iirc, the end scene is that one day, the girl arrives at the farm/barn and finds that the man is gone. And I think at the end, a cutscene of some TV report or police sirens reveals to the girl that the man she was feeding and hiding was a criminal. 🍎🤫🚔
   

Really hoping someone somewhere out there knows what I’m vaguely remembering, and that these aren’t just the odd imaginings of my kiddo self 😵‍💫 📺

Tim Cain, developer and designer behind the first Fallout game posted a video today ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yfWmNZV3_U ), in which among other things, he tells how Fallout directly influenced an Easter Egg and a feature in Age 2.
While technically not "Fallout Easter Eggs" in the strictest sense (compared to say putting a Pip Boy on a Monk unit), they came up in a discussion Tim and I took part in where in addition to Easter Eggs, we discussed direct and indirect influences in our games that were taken from, or due to, other games.
The story behind the 'woof woof' cheat is pretty straight forward.
Having played Fallout during the development of Age 2 (1998-1999), as well as being a brand new dog owner for the first time in my life, upon finding the dog Sasha in the Cathedral while playing Fallout, I said to myself "Hey! I want to do that too", and put it on my personal to-do list then and there. That is, to hide Stormy Dog somewhere in Age of Kings. Many dog owners will understand this. Anyway, at the very end of Age 2 development, a reminder went out to get any cheat codes or Easter eggs into the game before code freeze. So I got busy adding Stormy in. Artist Duncan McKissick donated a few hours of his time making the flying dog graphics.
That was probably one of the last times that individual developers were able to include cheats and Easter Eggs in the games without having to get approval by management, marketing, legal, and so on. A shift that was occurring industry wide as games became bigger business and everything had to be more carefully vetted and 'on brand' - a change which you can see if you compare Easter Eggs in various games from the 1990s vs the 2000s and later.
As for drawing Outlines around obscured units, that was not an originally planned feature for Age 2. We had begun full development of Age 2 with so many other things on our "to do list" for the game, that there was no item or idea on to deal with finding hidden or obscured units. It was an annoyance in Age 1, but not insurmountable.
At some point in late 1998 or early 1999, Bruce Shelly had gone to Redmond, WA for a press event where Microsoft had gathered a number of games journalists and was presenting all the various games they had in development. During the event, someone from one of the big game magazines at the time (Computer Gaming World or PC Gamer, I don't recall which) asked him point blank "what are you going to do about units being obscured and players having trouble finding them?" Bruce was very well prepared with our Age 2 plans and talking points, but that wasn't on the list anywhere, so he was 'thinking on his feet' when he realized it was a serious issue (as our buildings and other graphics were much bigger than in the previous game) answered "we will rotate the map".
From a design perspective, rotating the map was the most logical idea on how to fix/address the problem, without realizing that would take a MASSIVE amount of programing and additional art production - enough to miss our ship date - which were hard "Drop Dead" dates back when you had to arrange to have physical boxes and CDs in stores in time for Christmas. At that moment in time, Ensemble already knew the future was 3D and had just started on the Bang! Engine which would power Age of Mythology and Age3 and where rotating the map was natural, but the Genie Engine behind Age 1 and Age 2 had come from before 3D Video Cards were even a thing.
When Bruce got back to Ensemble's offices in Dallas, TX, I remember being in the debriefing meeting for his trip and when he got to the obscured unit issue and his response, lead programmer Angelo Laudon and I both were like "Oh Crap - That would take a metric s**t ton of work from both Art and Programming - it's not practical", and we said as much. And I think it was one of the producers - either Harter Ryan or Chris Rippy, who asked "Well, do you have any other ideas?" And it was at that moment, I remembered playing Fallout and how it would draw glowing outlines around the characters and items. Being the main graphics programmer, I could see it right there in my head how I could add that feature to the SLP graphics data format the game used. So I spoke up and said something like "I've got an idea - we can add outlines to hidden units".
I said I would I need a few weeks to implement it, and it was deemed important enough that I began work on it immediately. I updated ArtDesk (our main graphics asset tool) to generate the outline data in the SLP files, the genie engine to dynamically generate static clip masks, the unit databases to add the properties for which units generated outlines and which graphics would let outlines show through them, and so on.
After about three weeks, I had a single unit - an archer - that drew an outline when it went behind a Monastery. When I showed it to management, I remember being asked "That's great! But will take 3 weeks to (add this) to each unit?" as they were rightfully concerned about the schedule impact of all this. I remember then checking a batch conversion that was in process and replying "Nope. Give it another 20 or 30 minutes and every unit in the game will have outlines" Many expressions of relief quickly ensued, and everyone was playing with obscured units drawing outlines in the following day's playtest.
Anyway, that's the longer version of the Age 2 things mentioned in Tim's video - I thought some of you might enjoy hearing the details about what happened all those years ago.

Tiny mentioned on stream the other day that we need to start cooking up some strategies for tearing apart common talking points we might run into. Figured I'd kick it off with this thread - dont care about I/P or anti lefty stuff so going to focus on election rhetoric
Talking Points for the Election

1. What has Biden done?

We cant use this much at home but if someone whips this out in a talk with Destiny this is probably one of the biggest slam dunks he can get. A professional political commentator openly admitting they haven't kept up with the latest legislation is damning, and it gets a followup - "If you actually followed what was happening you might've known that the policy you said you loved so much with Trump was actually put into practice by Biden" (China tariffs are a huge win for Joe)

1. Senility

The first response to this is always to call it theater. If they push, you pivot this into "If he's senile then why is everything going right?". This is a big point for destiny - you *have* to stop pivoting away from "do you even like biden?" to "wait but trump is worse." Biden has genuine positives you should be leaning on, and at this point people are good at people picking up on that particular pivot so it often ends up looking very political and potentially dishonest. Its especially important to bring up the wins that are bipartisan or that have appealed to any of the versions of the republican party over the last 20 years

1. Immigration

I notice Destiny generally avoids asking questions in arguments because he thinks it can lose for rhetorical reasons, but this is a spot I think it works really well - you lead in with "What issue do you have with Biden's immigration policy?" and when they follow up with one of their halfbaked answers you cut them off with "no no no, whats your issue with *Biden*'s immigration policy?". The point is you want to direct the conversation to the bill thats currently on the floor of congress and either A) fuck them for not knowing about the bill or B) win the back and forth on what you like or dont like about the bill

1. Wokeness

Tiny's been doing great on this topic lately, downplaying the role of college students and throwing a few zingers to show how stupid it is to base political discourse off some suped up 18 year old. The broader followup to make here is you want to make it clear to the audience that you think the democratic party is moving away from immigration and woke. Having this observation aired is so insanely strong among neutral / conservative audiences its almost criminal not slip it in somehow. Destiny's already has it is in arsenal to mention how the far left hasn't seemed to infiltrate the actual democratic party very far, however I think he can be much stronger on this point and you can use the recent immigration bill to group that in here as well

1. "Trump came up with it first!"

Yea but you need an adult to put it into practice. Easy shot. Using rhetoric to consistently frame trump as juvenile or incompetent is super important, and it works x10 if you slip it in on a separate point (because they cant respond to both your point and your insinuation)

1. "But people clearly like the guy!"

The most piers morgan take you can get, takes some tact but you should be able to turn this into your favor by slipping in a "well people like a lot of dumb shit" and then go into a longer point either about celebrity worship or about how the dont focus on policy. Potential TMZ zinger here? Also, when you do this dont say republicans, say "The trump movement" or something similar. Simple word change to make it appeal to tradcons

1. You're just saying that to be a contrarian!

This goes for any point where they try to come up with a background reason for what you're saying. I remember this specifically happening in the candace debate, but it comes up all the time. This is an opportunity because it actually gives you a chance to frame your position in your own words. I'll get into this more in the optics section but pivoting this into "No, I believe this because I've always believed in [good thing]" or "No I believe it because I've read [relevant document] and I found the evidence compelling / hard to deny".

We just had a post this week asking for Destiny to do video essays - that shit's stupid, but its the right energy and a good litmus test for what people are looking for. The way Destiny makes this work is by taking the explanations he already does on stream - you know, when someone asks him a good question in chat and he does the little drawings - and [aieifndc] that into a machine. First step is to approach it correctly - dont wait for the good question to be asked. Come in to the stream ready to launch into an explanation on immigration, I/P, trump lawsuits, vaccine conspiracies, etc. When you find what you want, clip it and edit it either into 8 minutes for youtube or 15s for tiktok and let the algo gods do their thing. You make high quality content because you're generally knowledgeable on the topics at hand - lean on that, the higher quality your explanation the more likely someone's going to share it to their friends

1. Topic Selection

We have a number of opinions we believe, which of those opinions do we lean on to serve me best in this conversation? This is the main game you play if you're ever trying to be smart *and& honest about talking politics. For Destiny this means - younger audiences you lean on anti-conspiracies and avoid I/P, for boomers you focus on bipartisan issues and interest rates, for rightwingers and libertarians mention the guns you have and talk about how much you love america.

1. Positive Optics - Research Streams and dunking on Conspiracy Theorists

Tuning into a destiny stream to see that he brought two lawyers on to read through the latest trump case earned an unbelievable amount of respect for him in my head, I bring it up every time he comes and people are rightfully impressed - this is positive optics. Many aspects of Destiny's day to day work are incredibly impressive and a breath of fresh air to the average joe learning about his work, nearly every American is going to have respect for the guy who actually reads the bills and court cases he's talking about. So yeah, mention that shit more.
Destiny completely underestimates how crucial his takes on conspiracies are right now. When my uncle brings up voting machines or bats in China, I have no idea what to say - Destiny does. You see that big write up I did for talking points about the election? *Nobody* has the anti-conspiracy version of that talking point list - except Destiny. Voters under 26 dont give a fuck about the economy or healthcare, give them ammo to fire at the nutjob on the other end of the dinner table and they'll be willing to look past whatever stupid slur crusade you're on this week.

1. Chummy Buddies :)

"I dont see any possible argument for trump so Im really curious what Ben comes up with here" is possibly the only time I've seen Destiny tip into the most powerful rhetorical tactic of all time - camaraderie. When you kick off with some mildmannered joshing around, you give the impression you're just a couple of reasonable guys who happen to disagree on key topics. Americans splurge at even the idea of that scenario. The Trump supporter guy on the piers morgan appearances tries this approach a lot, and he's a good example of it - often makes concessions to Destiny's points in an effort to seem palatable & visibly laughs at a lot of oneliners from Destiny and Piers. It also throws the opponents off sometimes, because they feel like they cant get as combative when you're being friendly. Its also a good tactic in 2v2 debates, if it looks like you're super friendly with one of the two the other one comes off poorly

1. Hedging on I/P

"Hey listen I know its a contentious topic, I understand why people feel the way they do but from digging more into the topic its just really a lot more complicated from how it looks on the surface"

Pretty clear to me that Tiny was a bit disappointed by how shallow the immigration topic was, but this was the wrong perspective on it. Turns out, most of the crucial election topics are this simple. The only hard ones (I/P and the lawsuits) have already been covered. So if you make a big lineup of election topics there's good odds you're done with it by August - Economy, geopolitics, climate change, CHIPS act. I've noticed economics is something especially Destiny tries to toe around, interest rate stuff really isnt that complicated but hey maybe worth bringing Noah Smith on Bridges to help out (he's literally just written a piece on the economic arguments for Biden)

1. Bridges

Milking guests for followup guests. Sometimes you can just directly ask them who'd be a good fit, but its also just a generally good question to ask "Who are the prominent figures in the field right now?" "What books should be people be reading up on if they want to dive deeper?" (And then contact the author). For science and art features its always good to ask about recent work - "Is there any cool research you've seen in the past year or so that the public should be excited about?"

1. Commit to a position! State it clearly!

David Pakman's really good about this - he has a firm stance and he'll keep reiterating it throughout a conversation. Destiny OTOH tends to continuously circle around a conversation by adding evidence and making points - this is important, but if you dont state your point as well then it looks like you're avoiding giving an answer and people become confused on what your position is. The other thing is if people dont have a clear answer on what you believe, they'll start inferring it from the rest of the conversation - they have to guess, and that guess will never be favorable to you. A lot of conservative commentators *have* to circle the point because they dont have a position to stick to, there's no reason for Destiny to be doing it (and should be nailing the conservatives who rely on this tactic)

Hey I live in WA and will need a more stable and high functioning laptop within a reasonable budget that is going to be covered by a pay plan. Was wondering if anyone had suggestions.
I'll be using Toonboom harmony, Adobe Photoshop, After effects, Unity, Premiere Pro, Fire Alpacas, Autodesk Maya and capcut. Maybe clip art studios not sure yet though. If if helps I'll be doing 2D animation and 3D modelling.
Here's some other things obvious or not I'll be doing:
