When life gives you lemons, make limoncello!

2014.05.25 22:24 sjogerst When life gives you lemons, make limoncello!

Limoncello is an Italian lemon liqueur mainly produced in Southern Italy. Traditionally, limoncello is made from the zest of Femminello St. Teresa lemons, also known as Sorrento or Sfusato lemons. Lemon zest, or peels without the pith, is steeped in rectified spirit until the oil is released. The resulting yellow liquid is then mixed with simple syrup. Varying the sugar-to-water ratio and the temperature affects the clarity, viscosity, and flavor. (source: wikipedia)

I stil love coffee and drink 3 or 4 cups a day with milk but ive cut out all artificial sweetners (if I want sweetness in my coffee I add a little maple syrup. I've had one glass of fizzy drink in 9 weeks but otherwise stick with water and coffee.
A few times a week I'll take a protein shake and the odd multi-vitimin as a precaution.
Energy levels remain good, side effects are limited to being a bit tired after the injection and the odd random stomach / digestive issue (usually short lived).

Fear None of Those Things Which Thou Shalt Suffer. Revelation: Removing the Veil, Part 9
The angel of the Church of Smyrna
We continue reading the book of Revelation. We’re now analyzing the second chapter. We stopped on verse 8. Last time we saw that this majestic vision of Christ’s coming was revealed to the Apostle John on the Lord’s Day, on Sunday, on Patmos. Christ appeared to him sitting on a throne, surrounded by all that we described last time. St. John saw Him amidst seven golden lampstands, seven stars, and seven angels. The angels of the Churches are the bishops of the Churches. Christ first addressed the Bishop of the Church of Ephesus, the angel of the Church of Ephesus. He says He knows about his labors, about his patience, He sees his labors, but despite this, God also sees something that burdens his soul—that he has left his first love. He says to him: Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works (Rev. 2:5), otherwise his lampstand would be shaken and temptation and trials would come.
The angels of the seven Churches, Apocalypse Tapestry, 14th c.
To the second angel, of the Church of Smyrna (to the bishop), Christ says: And unto the angel of the Church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, Which was dead, and is alive (Rev. 2:8). We have already spoken about how this wording with “saith” is like the prophetic expression “thus saith” used by the prophets of the Old Testament when they proclaimed the will and word of God to the world. Only God can say in Holy Scripture, “Thus saith the Lord.” Thus, God says the following: He is the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. Nothing exists outside of Him; in Him is everything. He is the Beginning and End of all things. Which was dead, and is alive—Who was put to death but nevertheless came back to life and remains forever. He talks about this because later he will begin talking about the trials yet to be faced.
In verse 9, Christ continues: I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan (Rev. 2:9). I know your good deeds and the difficulties you’re going through; and I know your poverty. You know, it’s important: God knows about our lives. Because that’s what matters in the end. What can someone else know about us? Only what he sees from the outside. So? If we tell him something else about ourselves, he’ll know a little bit more. But despite his good disposition, his efforts, our familiarity will hit a certain limit. Human capabilities are very limited. But God knows everything. And when we face difficulties and problems in our lives, it’s important to remember that God knows about all this, and then we’ll have peace within us. It’s important to remember that God knows the truth and the real meaning of what’s happening; He knows about my difficulties. People may not know and not remember me, not accept my words, but God knows; He knows the reality, so we shouldn’t be disappointed, shouldn’t suffocate, or panic, or throw a tantrum because other people don’t understand us. Let them not understand. It’s impossible for other people to understand us, especially for everyone to understand us. When God came to earth, the perfect God, He spoke and acted divinely; all of His deeds and words were perfect, but people didn’t accept Him. Is it really possible to be accepted when we turn everything upside down because of every little thing? However, God knows our human flaws, but he also knows our hearts. He knows our deeds, our sorrows, our difficulties. We have talked about how the word “tribulations” is a strong word, describing exhaustion, weariness, longing. God also knows our poverty.

Here, in this verse, it’s not talking about spiritual poverty. This bishop wasn’t spiritually poor, as described below. Here it’s talking about material poverty. He was poor; the Church there was very poor. The early years of the Church, the persecution… Some people say: “And why does the Church need money?” Okay, it doesn’t need it, but you don’t need it either. You also can live on a piece of bread a day; you won’t die. But if you need to build a house or something else, then you’ll need to have money. So the Church sometimes needs to do some things, and so it needs money. If it doesn’t have money, it won’t be able to do it. If it doesn’t, the world won’t collapse. But this is really one of the difficulties. The Lord says to the bishop: “I know about your poverty, but you’re rich. Despite the fact that you’re in material poverty, you’re rich.” And then the Lord explains why he’s rich.
It can happen that a man is both poor and rich at the same time. There can also be the opposite situation, when a man is very rich, but at the same time he’s immensely poor: When he’s swimming in millions, but at the same time unhappy, stingy, greedy—then he’s poor, naked, and exhausted. He’s neither happy with money (he’s stingy, and so he gets no pleasure from it) nor does he have the Kingdom of Heaven, because he doesn’t use money with spiritual reasoning. He thinks he’ll take it with him. Why does God call the Bishop of the Church of Smyrna rich? He’s beset, condemned, fought against—the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. The Jews believed they were the chosen people of God. But the chosen people of God aren’t those who descended from Israel and have a hereditary, genealogical connection with it, but those who do the works of God. A Christian is more than a person who is baptized, goes to church, who keeps some rule according to the typikon. He is someone who has Christ within himself, who lives by the grace of God. The Jews were the people of God. The crucifixion of Christ severed their connection with God. They crossed over to the other side themselves, shaking off this Divine blessing from themselves. Now the chosen people are no longer the Jews, or the Greeks, or any other people, but the Church, which is beyond the bounds of nationality or family, and which embraces the entire world. Christians, the children of the Church, are the people of God.
“A rebellion against you has been started by those who call themselves Jews, but who are not, but rather a satanic assembly.” You see, in Revelation, Christ speaks descriptively, using periphrases. He doesn’t speak vaguely, politely, as we would, but He speaks about things as they are. He says: “It’s not an assembly of God’s people, but an assembly of satan.” Why? Because they do the works of Satan; they have Satan within them. Because these are people who have betrayed themselves to Satan and act against God. When we hear such conversations, let us not be taken in by false politeness. Sometimes we need to speak the truth, and not play false love by adding syrup everywhere. Everyone is good, everyone should be loved. Of course, everything is fine, wonderful, and holy, but there are also some truths. When God speaks of truth, it doesn’t mean that He insults a man. He doesn’t speak for the purpose of insulting, of shooting lightning at someone, or condemning him, but for the purpose of waking him up. God says such things to make people come to their senses. Christ speaks in such a way so as to convey to this bishop a true understanding of things, so he wouldn’t start wondering: “Maybe there’s some kind of compromise? Maybe I should give in on something, discuss some issues?” No, it’s an assembly of satan. There is no compromise.
St. Nicholas strikes Arius
In verse 10, Christ continues: Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer. Fear nothing. You still have much to endure (meaning the bishop of those who make up the satanic assembly), but fear nothing. The Lord doesn’t say this because he’ll escape sufferings—no. He’ll suffer. This bishop is Polycarp. At the time that the Apostle John wrote this epistle, the bishop in Smyrna was St. Polycarp, whose memory we celebrate, and whose life ended with a martyr’s crown. He was killed, burned; he ended his life in torments. Christ doesn’t say He'll help him avoid this—no. He doesn’t say: “Don’t be afraid, they won’t do anything to you. I’ll save you from them.” Rather, He says: “Don’t be afraid of what’s going to happen. You’ll endure all of this. You won’t manage to avoid anything. They’ll burn you alive.” Bishop Polycarp was indeed burned alive. God doesn’t deliver him from torment, but tells him not to be afraid, but to endure. Why?
Further, we read: Behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life (Rev. 2:10). Satan is planning to take some of you and put you in prison; he will tempt you; you will endure many trials in prison and will have great tribulation that will last ten days. We don’t know for sure if the torments lasted for ten days, but most likely the Lord speaks of ten days to show that this period of trials will continue for a certain time—it won’t be forever. And then what? Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. “No matter what, remain faithful unto death, and I will give you a crown of life.” It doesn’t mean that you have to be faithful only unto death. You have to remain faithful even if death threatens you, until death, and God will give you a crown of life. This is the message Christ leaves for the Bishop of Smyrna: “Remain faithful. Don’t be afraid. Don’t give in to cowardice.” And indeed, he remained faithful, and accepted death in torments in deep old age, like St. Voukolos, whom we spoke about before—the Bishop of Ephesus. He also suffered and received a crown of life.
There was an old monk on the Holy Mountain where we lived, in New Skete. He lived in a cave; his name was Averkios. He was very simple, illiterate; he lived in complete poverty in his cave. When he would come to our skete church for Vigil or Liturgy, he always sat behind everyone, taking the very last stasidia. What kind of work did he do? He gathered wild grass in the desert. There was little soil there—it’s mostly rocky, but little grass grew, and it was very valuable for the fathers.1 And he collected snails. He sold them to the fathers for a little money, so he would have a little something to feed himself with. This Elder Averkios, very virtuous, poor, living in a cave, was standing in his spot in the darkness at the end of the church during Vigil once, when only the lampadas were burning. He unexpectedly got up from his seat and headed straight for the altar, to the altar table. The fathers were very agitated. Only priests go there—ordinary monks don’t go into the altar. What happened? Did he go crazy? They saw him go in, make a prostration, and start talking with someone. Then he came back out, and the fathers stopped him, asking him what happened and why he went into the altar in the middle of the service. He replied:
“Nothing happened. The bishop called me.”
“What bishop called you? Did you see some bishop here?”
“What, didn’t you see the bishop who was here in church?”
“We didn’t see any bishop.”
“He came into the church, called for me, and I went in. I prostrated to him and kissed his hand. He asked my name. I said, ‘Monk Averkios, Your Grace.’ He took and wrote my name on a board.2 He showed me the board and asked if I saw my name. I said, ‘I see it, Your Grace.’ ‘What’s written here?’ ‘Monk Averkios.’ ‘I have written your name in the Book of the Living.’”
New Skete, Mt. Athos
The next day, Fr. Averkios reposed. He left with that message.
So, to whoever remains faithful to death, Christ will give the crown of life. And that’s the most important thing for us—to have the crown of life. All the rest is vanity. Collect as much as you want of whatever you want. Do what you want. But if you depart from this world without having the crown of life, then you’re pitiful, poor, and ill-fated. And if you have the crown of life, you have this blessing of God, the notification that you’ve defeated death, that you’ve overcome it and that you’ll be with God eternally. Then you haven’t lost in your life. All the difficulties and trials that you’ve overcome have their reward in the Kingdom of God. At the same time, we must know that our faith doesn’t depend on favorable circumstances and convenient situations: I don’t believe only when things are good for me and when I want everything to work out well. We often sin this way.
As soon as something starts going wrong, we immediately take offense at God. We blame God for everything. Understandably, we’re weak people, we have our difficulties. But if you don’t decide for yourself that you’ll remain faithful to death, then you’ll start grumbling at the smallest thing that comes your way. Then, with every little thing you’ll start saying, “Oh, I can’t; it’s too hard for me,” and so on. And if you say to yourself from the very beginning: “I will remain unto death. I won’t back down. I’ll die, but I won’t back down,” then anything that happens to you before death will seem easy. You’ll say, “I haven’t died from it yet.” They may have slandered, condemned, imprisoned, or driven you out, but they haven’t killed you yet. You need the determination to stand unto the very death. That means that we must remain faithful until the end of our lives and must be ready to suffer for our faith.
To be continued…
Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol
1 The grass is boiled and eaten (for example, the leaves of young dandelions).
2 On the Holy Mountain, they have these boards in the altar with the names of people who will be commemorated at the Liturgy.

2024.05.17 02:26 derrussian Printers on M2s

We're getting ready to open a new kiosk soon and this kiosk has 2 espresso machines and a label printer for each, and they're both currently placed in between the 2 machines, in front of the syrups/sauce which will make it extremely difficult to to pump items.
How do I get the printers behind the steam wand without much of the cables showing? Our DM is insistent on not seeing the cables which I get, but having the printers in their current spots is not gonna work well. What can I do?

2024.05.16 23:20 chemical_musician Espresso Rumtini with Campari!

Espresso Rumtini with Campari!
Espresso Rumtini with Campari!
  • 2oz rum (used plantation dark)
  • 2oz espresso (lavazza super crema)
  • .5oz Campari
  • .5oz brown-sugar syrup
  • powdered allspice garnish
combine all ingredients in a shaker (aside from garnish) and shake with ice for ~15 seconds, then double strain into a martini glass and add garnish.
this idea randomly came to me, i tried to look up anywhere if anyone has used campari in an espresso martini to no results, and tbh i was hesitant to make this thinking it might not work but i’m so glad i did as it’s incredible. which makes sense i suppose: espresso goes with rum v well ofc, rum goes w campari well (kingston and jungle bird)… i guess i was initially less sure about if campari and coffee go together, but duh, ofc they do!

2024.05.16 21:25 Cerasii Cheap espresso machine for lattes?

I would like an espresso machine to make lattes specifically, and I'm looking for a budget-friendly version. I'm currently eyeing the Delonghi Stilosa on Amazon. Would this be a good option for lattes? Does the machine last a while without breaking?
Note that although I do appreciate a black coffee sometimes, I am not remotely a coffee snob and am primarily interested in burying the espresso produced in steamed milk and flavored syrup anyway given that I'm planning to make lattes. My dad, who is indeed a coffee snob, calls this "candy coffee" so I am prepared for your disappointment in my lack of taste XD

2024.05.16 17:46 BuffaloSafe5505 I am psychosis prone. Any advice?

Hi all, I know I should be seeking some professional help about this issue if it's worrying me so much, but I am in a foreign country without immediate access to resources, unfortunately.
Okay, so I (28M) had my first psychotic episode about four years ago. I have long been an on/off-again heavy drug user, with opiates being my drug of choice, but I've done other things because I cannot control my opiate use. During the holidays in 2020, I went on a five-day binge of heavy drinking, smoking marijuana, taking Xanax, ketamine, MDMA, and cough syrup with about half a dozen friends. As the bender went on, more and more people stopped coming over, but I just kept going.
Once it was time to get my shit together and get back to work, I had an intense psychotic episode. I am not sure if it is as intense as some folks here have had, but basically, I was seeing my thoughts before they occurred visually. Especially when I closed my eyes. My thoughts would flash really fast and it would not at all, and I ended up not sleeping for about three days. Each day, the symptoms got more intense and I felt that if my sleep deprivation got to a certain point, I would lose my connection to reality. But I also was too afraid to interact with anyone for that entire period and just stayed in my room.
About one year later, I had another episode after I was binging liquor and Xanax hard for a few weeks. But it also was brought on by a falling out with an ex of mine. I locked myself in my apartment for a week and was convinced that she was going to kill me. I didn't sleep for four days straight, and I was convinced that she was turning on lights or tapping on my windows at night. I was having some mild hallucinations, seeing shadows in the corner of my eye. I wanted to try and remain sober through it, but I had a wine collection and thought to myself that if I had a few drinks it could calm me down and help me sleep; however, I had a delusion that drinking would lower my inhibition and I would end up killing myself. It eventually subsided with lingering symptoms, ie, thinking people in public were staring at me or talking about me.
I snapped out of this episode a few days later and then went to a jam session in the city I was living, only to have intense paranoia on stage. My therapist ended up arranging a hospital visit for me, where the psychiatrist there told me that I was having a panic attack and that I was repressing it, leading to physical symptoms, namely my blood pressure being at stroke level. The doctor also did not believe there was any evidence that drugs triggered this episode.
Lastly, about two years ago, after I had begun injecting Oxycodone for a year at that point, I went to detox at my parents house. We got into a bullshit argument (my sister accused me of harassing her, even though I didn't) and my parents, already skeptical of me, kicked me out of their house. I had an intense delusion the entire time and on the way back home that there was a conspiracy against me and that I was destined to die from drugs and had no other choice. (I ended up remaining in active addiction for the next year). I did not have any delusions or delusions such that I could not interact with people.
I recently got treatment over the past year and ended up moving out of the country I was in where drugs were available, and even got engaged. But last week, after some drinking, I had a depressive episode where I was sleeping almost all day for about five days. My fiancee kept trying to talk to me about every half an hour, which started to make me paranoid. I felt like I was reaching a tipping point and losing my grounding with reality and I begged her to please leave me alone, but she wouldn't and refused to. I ended up passing through that phase, and her father, a doctor, prescribed my Prozac, which has really helped my mind and stopped my intrusive thoughts.
I am wondering if my episodes seem like extreme anxiety or are genuine psychosis. I am also wondering if I should be seeking care for this, or if it's just a fluke from heavy drug use. Me and my fiancee are also thinking of moving soon to a country where mental health care is very underdeveloped. I am worried that if I have an episode that she won't be helpful and might even push me over the edge. Any way I can help explain my concerns to her?
TL;DR: I think I might have a deeper mental illness with psychotic episodes but I'm not sure. My partner also doesn't understand what I'm going through.

2024.05.16 14:16 Substantial_Edge_358 Coffee scene in Sz?

Hello everybody, I’m moving to Shenzhen and interested in the coffee scene - more the local independent roasters- do they exist?
Contemplating doing a roastery as had one in New Zealand but not sure how the economics will look.
Is coffee even popular, like without the syrups and cream etc. More espresso style.
Many thanks

2024.05.16 04:49 Pyroknight98 What if Luffy recruited a crew-mate every Arc? East Blue

What if Luffy recruited a crew-mate every Arc? East Blue
Exactly what the title says, let’s run a thought experiment and try to add as many Straw Hats as there are Arcs in the manga.
The rules for potential candidates, which all current Straw Hats follow, are as follow: •Must have a tragic backstory •Must fill a specific roll in the crew •Must have a dream that can only be achieved by sailing with the Straw Hats
There’s a bit more to discuss, but it’ll make more sense if I talk about when it’s relevant. Let’s begin.
Romance Dawn: Luffy and Zoro. This is easy, Luffy is the main character and Zoro is his first crew-mate. No need for speculation or bs-ing…yet.
Orange Town: Nami. I can already hear the straw-men I just made up. “Nami didn’t join in Orange Town, she joined in Arlong Park!” I agree, to an extent, but you’ll quickly see this thought experiment falls apart without a bit of rule bending.
Syrup Village/Baratie: Usopp and Sanji. Combining these two because there isn’t much to say, this is already cannon.
Arlong Park: Nojiko. So begins the actual meat of the thought experiment, and why I have Nami joining in Orange Town. Of everyone we meet between the Baratie and Cocoyashi Village, our options are pretty limited. Yosaku and Johnny are available, but their skills are already covered by Zoro, nor do we know much about their backstory. Nojiko, in my opinion, is the only character that fits our criteria. Nojiko has the same backstory as Nami, except she was old enough to remember being abandoned in the destroyed Oykot Kingdom and finding Bell-mère. To fit the other two criteria though, we’ll have to drift in fan-fiction territory. Inspired by her adoptive mother’s stories of her time in the Marines, Nojiko dreams of one day joining up just like her. Following Arlong’s takeover and the subssiquent execution of Bell-mère, Nojiko’s dream has to be put on the back-burner, for fear of how the fish-men would react and potentially hurt her, Nami, or the rest of the village. Fast-forward to the Straw Hat’s arrival, Nojiko, while arguing with Nami, is shot in the back by Nezumi, a Marine officer. Appalled by the corrupt Marines, and with years of abuse under Arlong swimming in her mind, Nojiko becomes determined to wipe corruption from the world anywhere she can. As for her roll, I think she’d make a good Master-At-Arms. Given her role in helping Cocoyashi village to fight back against Arlong, and her willingness to jump head first into danger, I think having her be an all-purpose fighter, good with both rifles and sabers, is most fitting. I could also see her being a sort of Grenadier, years of handling Mikans giving her a good throwing arm, but that’s harder to bs. Does it make sense? Not really, but that’s not the point.
Logue Town: And we don’t even make it out of the East Blue before I have to throw my hands up and say I have no idea. Off the top of my head, with only canon characters available, we have Alvida and Tashigi, both of which seem incredibly unlikely. Alvida doesn’t really have a tragic backstory that we know of, but I could see her admiration for Luffy, being the first man willing to punch her, combined with his miraculous escape from Buggy spurring her into thinking she should join him instead of fighting him, but that’s as far as I can stretch it. Tashigi is a fan favorite, both in general and to join the Straw Hats either as a crew-mate or ally, but she’s a Marine Officer. I also don’t know if we know enough about her backstory to say if she fits the first category, or if there’s enough to extrapolate and bs our way to something coherent. All in all, I think Logue Town is where the “new crew-mate every Arc” pattern breaks for the first time.
But what does anyone else think? Am I insane? Are there characters I overlooked? Who is your impossible Straw Hat?

2024.05.15 20:05 The_Orangest Mothers of Invention influence

Has anyone seen Alex talk about Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention as an influence at all? I’ve never seen it, but then again I don’t rifle through every interview of his. However, when I listen to Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino, every time, without fail, I hear that Freak Out record all over it. From the schizo vocals/backing vocals on Golden Trunks, even the guitar riff/tone itself, the chords, to the weird breakdown of “the Martini Police” melodically, to even the name itself of The Martini Police (who are the brain police, which has a very similar feel to that moment in Star Treatment. Tons of other similarities between TBHC and Freak Out it’s insane.
I know everyone talks about Bowie and his voice and lyrics hit that sure, but I hear so much Zappa and was wondering if anyone can confirm this via an interview or anything.

2024.05.15 18:25 apeachinanorchard My thoughts on 10 fragrance samples from Etiket

Living in Eastern Canada, it's not as easy for us (as compared to our American neighbors) to get our hands on perfume samples without paying insane delivery prices. Etiket, based in Montreal, stocks niche/designer fragrances & has samples you can buy for almost every fragrance they sell, so I decided to bite the bullet. I haven't tried much from niche houses, only designer, so I was curious & wanted to try scents in the hopes of finding a possible signature fragrance. I bought 14 samples + the 3 extras Etiket give you (if you ask), but this review only includes 10 of them because I haven't tried everything yet and I also don't want this post to be a freakin novel. I'll probably do the rest in another post later.
About my tastes : I'm a fruity floral, gourmand & fresh type of person.
I made my list by houses (in alphabetical order) so here we go :
Carner Barcelona
Sal Y Limon - 5/10
Nice and fresh citrusy scent, very much beachy vibes, but the patchouli kicks the rest to the curb after 30 minutes. Note to myself : DNB anything with patchouli because that's all it's going to end up smelling like.
Giardini di Toscana
Blu Indaco - 8.5/10
This one had to grow on me because at first its musk felt way too masculine for me. I tried it first on a piece of cotton because of that, then when I came back to it after 1 or 2 hours, it had morphed into something nice and sweet. Tried it on skin and this time I found the musk way less intense. I'm getting almond, vanilla, clean laundry notes. The pepper is also coming through and stops Blu Indaco from becoming nauseating. I like this but I'm not sure if I'd commit to a full bottle, however I'll probably try to get my hands on a travel size.
Jorum Studio
Phloem - ??? / 10
Captivated as soon as I open the vial. First note I catch is amber and it’s an amber that reminds me of Stella Peony by Stella McCartney’s base notes. Then, words that come to mind are pungent, salty and fresh. There’s a slight musk. I’m getting overripe passionfruit & petrichor, with something sour too.
10 minutes post first pray : I’m definitely understanding why some compare Phloem to women’s scent down there, because what I’m smelling definitely reminds me of the female genitalia, minus the animalistic notes of sex. There’s also powdery notes. Clean sweat. This is such a fascinating fragrance.
2h post spray : Anddddd this is where I got disappointed. Phloem turned into something woody and utterly disgusting, I can't even put my finger on what it is but I ended up scrubbing my wrists with rubbing alcohol bc it was giving me an headache.
A very interesting experiment but ultimately the base notes ruined it for me.
Healing Berry - 6.5/10
This is a bucketful of red and dark berries with something that's definitely tannic in essence, reminding me of wine. The blackcurrant and the raspberry shine in this. Strong sangria vibes. It smells very good, it's sweet without being nauseating, it works well on my skin, but for $105 USD / $140 CAD I am absolutely sure that I can find a dupe that's not nearly as expensive.
L'Artisan Parfumeur
Couleur Vanille : 9.5/10
In the words of Lady Gaga, talented, brilliant, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique...This is a fall in love at first whiff fragrance for me. If vanilla grew in the sea, this is what it would smell like. It's iodine, it's sweet, the immortelle notes gives an edge to it, I don't even know where to begin describing this. I know it's supposed to represent Madagascar, but having wandered through small town streets in southern France near the Méditerranée, this is what it reminds me of. I ordered a full bottle.
À Fleur de Pêche - 7/10
I'm so so so disappointed the patchouli ended up drowning everything else, because the rest is gorgeous. Smells just like a peach orchard, this is not an artificial peach, this is fresh, herbaceous, sweet. I've learnt my lesson, I can't do patchouli in a perfume because it doesn't work at all with my skin.
Imaginary Authors
A Whiff of Wafflecone - 5.5/10
This is a well done gourmand, thing is, this doesn't remind me of an ice cream shop at all, this is 100% sugar shack (and I say this as a Canadian). It smells like what maple syrup tastes, if that makes any sense, and I get where the waffle cone title comes from, because there's definitely a hint of that. I'm just not a big fan of maple scent & it doesn't remind me of ice cream, which kind of seemed to be the goal, so that's why I knocked points off. For someone who likes this type of stuff, this would be a easy 6.5/10. Just not my thing.
Malin + Goetz
Strawberry - 7.5/10
I live in Quebec province, where fresh grown strawberries are available from mid-May to late-September. This smells just like our strawberry fields in June - it's green, it's herbaceous, there's a distinct note of well, fresh soil. Absolutely not your typical juicy strawberry smell. There's also some interesting notes like hay and clean wood that, for some reason unknown to me, reminds me of horses, without being animalistic. Freshly cleaned stables. I like this a lot but the staying power is weak and as such, I feel like this would do better in a soap or a candle than as a perfume.
Parfums de Marly
Oriana - 1.5/10
Oh man, what a disaster. The head notes are a perfect raspberry lemonade but not even 2 minutes after getting it on skin, an overwelming powder scent drowns EVERYTHING else and smells like old lady (bass boosted). The 1.5 is for the gorgeous head notes, otherwise this would be a 0/10.
Zoologist
Bee - 8/10
I love a well done honey scent and this is honey on crack. One of my favorite scents is Honey I Washed the Kids by Lush, which is very honey forward as well. If I had to compare the two, Bee is the raw material and HIWTK would be the end product, if that makes sense. This is truly like being inside a beehive, there is nothing artificial or dessert-like about this honey scent, its staying power is strong and there is something floral in the middle and base notes that is incredibly satisfying. I get some orange juice as well in the background. The white florals don't steal the show but rather compliment the overall scent. I can't stop smelling my wrist. However, I completely understand reviewers who said it's too much for them. I could see myself wearing this on a date, but not at a job interview.

2024.05.15 14:55 Karlahn Homemade elderflower liqueur

Hi all,
I have local elderflowers growing in the wild away from roads near where I live.
I want to make an elderflower liqueur as a going away gift. The usual fruits I make liqueurs with are not ripe before my friend is moving hence elderflower.
I have 95 abv neutral spirit. Howong should I infuse the blossoms for? How do I dilute it to about 30% abv without killing the flavour? Should I make an elderflower syrup instead of using plain sugar?
If anyone has a good recipe to share I'm interested. I'm thinking of adding lemons for tartness and raisins to emulate the neutral grape spirit.

2024.05.15 14:51 ughfuckwhat Shameless MIL

I’m so exhausted. My husband and I just hosted both our mothers for a full week and I’m about ready to crumble. Having my mom here was lovely but my MIL is almost intolerable. I just need to list out the insanity because it feels like it’s swirling in my head.
I don’t know dude. I’m tired of even listing her antics out. She has no shame whatsoever and the most severe Main Character Syndrome I’ve ever seen. There were ZERO moments of silence and peace in the week she was here because she had to fill every void with some inappropriate bullshit. I’m distraught that I need to go back to work today after taking so much PTO and I don’t feel an ounce of relaxation.
Thanks for listening, peeps.

2024.05.15 05:30 delibirdguy Top 500 Songs Ever (Subjective)

Over the course of the past few months I have been working on compiling a list of my 500 favorite songs. It was sort of challenge that I gave myself and I'm super pumped with how it turned out. There were a few rules (only 5 songs per artist being the big rule, among a few others), and here's the list I came up with. Thought it was fun, so wanted to share here and see if it might spark any discussion about song placement, lack of songs/artists, or see if anyone had any similar lists. All thoughts are welcome!
