2024.05.17 12:55 jnl9912 Postgrad Cambridge/Cambridge Trust (or college specific) funding... has anyone heard ANYTHING?

Was already accepted a couple months ago (woo!) but I'm starting to get worried because I cant really make this degree happen financially if I cant fund it. Hoping that they are just slow and haven't gotten back to people yet but if anyone has heard anything from Cambridge Trust or Colleges for college specific scholarships, I would appreciate any comments
Going for a Mphil in Eng for Sustainable Development and will be in Wolfson college, coming from America so I'm paying the whopping international fee.

2024.05.17 11:30 Cali_Hepburn My mom😕

Big rant alert
I love my mom a lot, I don’t hate her and I don’t think she’s inherently a bad person. Honestly though I have many memories and feelings that make me feel like I was very emotionally neglected. My mom is a victim of many forms of abuse by her adoptive parents, she told me while I was a young age that she wanted kids of her own to create a good family which looking back feels very strange with the context. A bit later, which started when I was again very young she met a guy, I’ll call him Keith, and Keith was very very neglectful towards me. He had kids of his own and therefore he didn’t want to give me more attention than his kids, and he would often see me doing self harm as a young kid like choking myself and hitting myself as funny. He would also yell at me and sometimes would trap me under bed sheets until I couldn’t breathe. I remember one time I was young and had to have a stool to step on to see myself in the bathroom mirror, I stepped on it not knowing our cat had its paws beneath it and the cat screamed. I was horrified and immediately stepped off but Keith was home alone with me and heard it, he immediately opened the bathroom door and yelled at me while I tearfully tried to explain what had happened. My mom did nothing and defended Keith. I also came home with my mom one night to see rose petals and candles all about, Keith came out and was affectionate with my mom, but then proceeded to tell me to stay in my room the entire night, the only reason I came out of my room later was because I had to pee so badly and I was so scared when I did, before i peed I stopped by moms room and asked if it was okay to use the bathroom, keith said yeah as if I was stupid, again my mom did nothing. I longed for a dad figure to be there because my biological dad (let’s call him Kyle) left when I was about two and I had a very limited relationship with him. My mom forced me to call him every week even when I would beg not to and after each phone call to him I’d be devastated for days. Later on when I was about nine years old my mom, although very estranged from Keith, got with him for a bit and had a kid, my baby brother (I’ll call him D), but Keith didn’t want anything to do with D and I ended up helping with raising him while my mom worked. I love D but he has many special needs and I ended up helping a lot, taking him while my mom felt stressed and would sometimes throw things (which she did with Keith, I have several memories of her throwing stuff like silver ware and keys close to Keith’s face, which six or seven year old me would try to regulate, I’d run after her trying to comfort her). A year later she had my sister (I’ll call her T) and when she told me she was pregnant I cried my eyes out because I was so stressed already with D and I knew my responsibility’s would become more especially since Keith didn’t want anything to do with D and T. I remember we went out with dinner with my grandparents that night after she told me about T and I had to pretend everything was okay especially since my mom didn’t want them knowing. Fast forward a bit and my mom has a new fiancé who was super weird and hated me from the get go. It came to a head when he sent me a text that I didn’t respond to immediately and he stopped talking to me. He even told my mom I was dead to him and she didn’t do anything but relay that to me. She would also tell me everything he disliked about me, one day before school she went on a rant about all the stuff he thought I was doing wrong and was bad about me, and in my first period class other kids were trying to comfort me, even ones I didn’t know, because they saw that I was in such a bad mental state and couldn’t hold it together. They would also have sex loudly in the room next to me, I told her I felt uncomfortable hearing it and she told me to get earplugs even though I was like 13 and couldn’t afford anything. I also tried to tell her I felt like I was third wheeling their relationship like with Keith, she told me to stop talking and walked away. She would also tell me that R hated me and my siblings and often talked about leaving me with them forever. Later on they had a kid together (I’ll call her O) during my sophomore year of high-school. She also has some mental problems and so it was difficult, when she was an infant my mom informed me I wasn’t going to be in physical high school anymore, that she enrolled me in online high school so that I could take care of O throughout the day and pick up D and T when they got out of school. D was in first grade though while T was in kindergarten so I often would help raise O, go and get T and then go back to get D while carrying O and guiding T. I also would have to stand outside and wait for T to get out it kindergarten with other parents while holding O but I was under strict instructions not to let anyone touch O because my mom didn’t want it. Later on I finished high school and went to online community college, while that was happening she met her newest man who is now her husband (let’s call him Ray). Ray is still in her life but again didn’t like me. The first night he was there he told me he was angry with me because in his eyes my mom was doing all the work and I was doing nothing (he first came over when I was with family which I coordinated with my mom but he saw it as I was gone and she had to do everything). Then the patterns began to emerge again, my mom would tell me that Ray would go to her and tell her that he was pissed at me. Not only that but both my mom and Ray would come to me for advice on how to keep their relationship good and I tried to help as best as I knew how. Later on he and my mom had a kid (let’s call him R) and I would have to take care of R and the rest of the kids for hours on end, often being the one to find ways to help him stay calm and feed him. Ray would offer me weed and alcohol often, later which he used against me as a way of being like “I’m giving you things so be grateful”. Later on in that I came out of the closet, my mom was mad at me for it and wouldn’t tell me she loved me for months, she barely acknowledged me and yelled at me. Ray would tell me he was ashamed of me especially for upsetting my mom. He would often tell me I was lazy, irresponsible and dumb. Also after I came out he told me I was unnatural and dumb. Later I was in the early stages of moving out and he literally told me “yeah well if you were actually smart you’d stay here with us” and would also shame me for comforting my siblings after he would yell at them and hit them. He very much prides himself on how he can intimidate people especially me and whenever I spoke up with him he’d sit me down and make me shake. There was one instance where I actually stood my ground a bit and told him “well hey I didn’t back down” and his response was “HA yeah that’s cuz I didn’t force you to back down”. My mom was present at that conversation and completely defended him, even in conversations with her and I she completely defends him all the time. I’ve tried to tell my mom how much Keith, R and ray hurt me and she’d tell me to basically shut up. Especially with Keith because according to her that was in the past and therefore didn’t matter now. I also confronted her about how depressed and suicidal I was when she neglected me after I came out and she said I was responsible for how I felt in that time period. I also couldn’t have mental breakdowns or panic attacks around her because she’d say I was overreacting and dumb for doing so. Despite all of that I still feel like I’m in the wrong, which is why I’m talking about it here, I still feel like I need confirmation that I’m not a horrible kid. In my teen years I was very angry with her after all that happened with Keith and eventually R, I wasn’t the nicest person to her and I feel really guilty about that. So idk, maybe I’m in the wrong here, idk. I just need some clarity ig.

2024.05.17 11:17 Ok-Hawk-3081 If you were in the mha verse, you too would be bullying deku.

Deku is a geek, he is obsessed with pro heroes, collects their cards, memorizes their signature moves and quirks and so on.
That like a 5' 4" kid obsessed with basketball, that's never played the sport a day in his life and has no physical condition telling you he dreams of getting a scholarship to play in the best college league team in the country and be a great basketball player like Le Bron James in a world were basketball is the most prestigious and popular profession in the world.
People saying "deku is smart and knows the fighting styles of many pro heroes" is like saying you can play professionally by memorizing all the statistics, rules and techniques you see on tv.
They weren't bullying him for just being quirkless, they were mocking and laughing at the sheer audacity of what he was saying.

2024.05.17 11:07 EV3RDEEN UPCM Admissions/Selection

Hello, y'all!
First and foremost, I don't even know if I used the right flair, but bahala na. I'm currently a pre-med student (BS Nursing) in my 2nd year na and as early as now, I've been thinking of the med schools I want to apply to.
As a first generation college student, and (hopefully) medical student soon, I don't have the resources to attend schools like ASMPH, SLCM, and UST. If I would have the courage to apply to those schools, I'm sure I'll be eyeing the scholarships which are highly competitive. Hence, I'm leaning towards UPCM.
I heard that UPCM usually admits the ones from UPM or the UP system. As someone from Adamson (which isn't even known to have Nursing), I'm quite afraid that I'm automatically at a disadvantage given my school background.
Is this particular rumor true about UPCM? Whether or not it is true, what tips could you give me, a first generation pre-med student, for med school admissions? Thank you in advance for the responses.

2024.05.17 11:04 Ok-Cranberry-4631 Love

I’m a 19 year old male, i turn 20 in october and find that i’ve been riddled with a terrible love life. Many are things that i’ve done and haven’t done, things that spiraled out of control and things that i forced upon myself. Relationship wise it was always something i couldn’t fully control. But in a way, i believe my love life ties into my family as well. I always felt unloved in all honesty , even in family settings i felt like my family never truly loved me for who i was. I was abused mercilessly as a kid, i used to believe it was normal to hide under your bed from your family when they came around. I believed It was normal to be beat with anything from crates to broken , sharp hangers and copper wires. I convinced myself this was okay. I never understood why I loved these people who beat me so terribly, who neglected me so badly and who yearned for a reason to do something to me. The same people who subjected me to these beating, i lied for constantly .
I protected them because in a way, i didn’t want any harm to come to them. I protected the same aunt who would beat us with ribbed belts lined with fake crystals made to slice and cut us, the same grandfather who slapped me around at the slightest inconvience, the same father who would choke and throw me across the room, the same older brother who tortured me for years in ways you couldn’t imagine. Despite my anger and sadness, despite the bruises and cuts, despite the empty cupboard and the roaches scurrying across every surface, i wanted to protect them. It’s messed up because in a way i believe i loved them in hopes that one day they’d love me. Maybe they would realize im not just an empty vessel, that i have feelings and dreams like them. That my empty expression and quietness wasn’t because i was hollow, but because i wanted them to see deeper than my surface level. Maybe they’d wake up and realize what they did, or maybe they would apologize for once and console me like the child then needed. I loved them in hopes that they’d love me one day and show me the same compassion and care i did for them. I wanted them to love me for who i was and what i could become. I was talked down to, always the underdog and considered to be “lucky” whenever i succeeded. Middle school, High school, College, multiple jobs, paying for various rents from Maryland to New York, but nothing ever was enough. The grades didn’t matter, or the scholarships and the plaques, all I wanted was their love.
I yearned for their love so badly i would clutch my chest in pain and cry silently. I never truly understood why i felt this way, it never made sense to me in all honesty. But that’s the thing about love , it’s a fucked up thing that nobody can truly control.
I just wish i could’ve controlled mine.

2024.05.17 10:56 MammaAayanNBAStar Get Aayan to Chicago He wants to go Pro!!!

Hello there,
I want to introduce you to my incredible son, Aayan. At just 13 years old, he's already showing remarkable dedication and focus, especially when it comes to his dream of playing professional basketball. Over the past two years, he's poured his heart and soul into honing his skills, and I couldn't be prouder of his determination. As a single mom, it's been Aayan and me against the world from the very beginning. I've always believed in his potential, and I'm committed to giving him every chance to chase his dream of becoming a pro baller. This year, his hard work paid off when he was selected from his club and countless other athletes nationwide for an exclusive event in America. This opportunity could open doors to scholarships, paving the way for his future. The reality of college expenses weighs heavily on my mind, but I refuse to let financial barriers stand in the way of Aayan's aspirations. With your support, we can make sure he not only attends the event in Chicago but also has the chance to explore other opportunities that could shape his journey towards success. Your contribution, no matter how big or small, will mean the world to us. Together, let's make Aayan's dream a reality. Let's get him to Chicago and set him on the path to a bright future. Thank you for believing in him as much as I do. Fund Aayan to fulfil his dreamsLink

2024.05.17 10:50 Gargant777 Congress is Preparing to Restore Quotas in College Admissions and increase them in corporate world

Hey burger folx you got a new IDpol horror storm coming your way according to this article corporates will get the power to use quotas to further fragment workers.

Congress is Preparing to Restore Quotas in College Admissions

More than two-thirds of Americans think the Supreme Court was right to hold Harvard's race-based admissions policy unlawful. But the minority who disagree have no doubt about their own moral authority, and there's every reason to believe that they intend to undo the Court's decision at the earliest opportunity.
Which could be as soon as this year. In fact, undoing the Harvard admissions decision is the least of it. Republicans and Democrats in Congress have embraced a precooked "privacy" bill that will impose race and gender quotas not just on academic admissions but on practically every private and public decision that matters to ordinary Americans. The provision could be adopted without scrutiny in a matter of weeks; that's because it is packaged as part of a bipartisan bill setting federal privacy standards—something that has been out of reach in Washington for decades. And it looks as though the bill breaks the deadlock by giving Republicans some of the federal preemption their business allies want while it gives Democrats and left-wing advocacy groups a provision that will quietly overrule the Supreme Court's Harvard decision and impose identity-based quotas on a wide swath of American life.

2024.05.17 10:37 atn3101 Profile review: non-trad, URM

Hi, looking for feedback on my profile: - 28F - GPA 3.86 from top 20 public US college in Marketing - GRE: 325 (163V, 162Q). 2 tries, could not improve quant 🫠 - Female, international, SE Asian - 5+ YOE in edtech (though really more ed than tech). Was employee #17 at a startup that now employs > 200 people. Went from a sales/customer service rep to product manager and oversee a team of 14 (doing educational counseling). Work with colleagues and clients based in Asia and US. Simultaneously did part-time content production / digital marketing at another edtech startup based in Korea (this just wrapped up). - ECs: worked on an podcast project about entrepreneurship that peaked at top 5 in my country. Organized a few donation drives for animal shelters + a COVID fundraiser a work. Pro bono college consulting that helped low-income students get scholarships. - Recs by 2 former supervisors (who have both left), 1 was the COO of current company and Wharton grad. I have really great relationships with both recommenders and they even asked if I want to read what they’ve written. - Post-MBA goals: consulting or pivot industry because I’m tired of startup education life. I also need/want to learn more in a structured setting with good mentors. I’m not too worried about recruiting in the US since my long term plan is to be in Asia, some US MBAs just carry a better brand name.
What are my chances at M7 and INSEAD? My former COO (former admission at W some 8 years ago) said W would be very possible but I think he’s just trying to be encouraging.

2024.05.17 08:38 LegendaryKamin Need Solutions/Ideas Towards the Future

Hello. I am a second-year college student who has truly fucked up. I am going to a private university on scholarship as a CS Engineering student. I am finishing my second year in a terrible situation. My GPA is 2.4. I have failed two (might about to become 3) classes. I'm sure that my scholarship will be revoked (not 100% sure but with my GPA?) and am now in a shitty situation of not knowing what to do. My local community colleges only really give classes for the first 2 years which I have completed and I don't think with my GPA I could transfer to any colleges. I'm stuck on whether I should continue trying to get an education, change degrees, or completely drop out and find a job that doesn't require a college education.
Do you have any advice?

2024.05.17 08:30 bearzbullzsoxhawkz Moments where I think about Existence

I constantly wonder about: the lives of others, putting myself in other people's shoes, if it's possible that I crossed paths again with strangers from my past, and about how vast and obscure the world's population is.
Long post ahead so hear me out. Every once in a while I'll have these thoughts related to the existential stuff I mentioned in the title. Let's go piece by piece in a format that roughly follows my brains thoughts and see if anymore else ever thinks about this weird stuff.
  1. Wondering about the lives of others - I always have this weird thing I do in my mind where I randomly fixated on a stranger and try to put myself in their body hence seeing the world from their point of view. If I'm sitting on a northbound traffic jam, I would look to my left at the traffic jam going southbound and find some person and then imagine that I'M the one looking at the view towards southbound traffic as if I'm sitting in that person's mind and field of vision. This then leads me to wonder where that person is going? What is their life like? Who are their loved ones? What do they do for a living? And basically coming to the conclusion that they also have a complex and intricate life like mine. They laugh, cry, smirk, and show various other emotions just like how I do. In my life they are just side characters but in their lives they are the main character. I hate it when this mind teleport thing happens in scary or dark situations. Like if I'm watching a documentary about a child abductor / murderer, my mind teleports into the minds of those kids and my body "feels" the sense of dread, fear, and anxiety that those kids feel. This feeling scares the shit out of me in these situations. Or when you fight with your mom and leave the house after saying something hurtful and then you are picturing in your head that she is sitting on a stool softly crying because you hurt her. Then you feel like utter trash because your body "feels" that guilt. It's weird knowing that your mom, brother, best friend all interact with you when you are present in the moment with them and you perceive them a certain way but then when you are in different rooms and separate areas you don't know what they doing, if they are okay, how they behave with others, and how your perception of them would change if you were just a fly on the wall in a room they happen to be in.
  2. Crossing paths again? - Taking that same person from the first scenario about the traffic jam. I know this person is a complete stranger as we are both just participants in this unbearable traffic jam. However, what if I crossed paths with this person sometime in the past somewhere in a completely different location from where we were both sitting in our cars without even realizing it? For example, say I was born and raised in Florida and moved to Michigan for college before settling for a job in Texas after graduating. There was also another student (the same person above sitting across the median from me in traffic) who was born and raised in Idaho and went to same college as me in Michigan before also moving to Texas for work. We are both originally from two very different parts of the country, then converged in Michigan for college (walked past each other on campus a few times), and now are next to each other in traffic in a third random state. This feeling always weirds me out as it makes me nostalgic for some reason. I feel like for something like this to happen that would be impossible but this world ceases to amaze me. Imagine you are being served ice cream at a Coldstone in New York City and then you see that same person at a gas station in Phoenix 6 months later. Insane.
  3. I can't stop thinking about how vast and obscure the world's population is and was. We will only meet what seems like a tiny fraction of the amount of people on this planet throughout our lifetime. The amount of people you see daily in TV ads are actual people who are living their lives outside of that TV set. There are so many of them. You seen that person and their face for that one 30 second commercial and then you will never see them again for the rest of your life. You were close to a colleague at work for years and then they left the company for another position out of the state you live in and now you will never see or talk to that person ever again. When they are out of your life, what are they doing? How are they doing? How did they die? All questions we will never know. That feeling feels so grim to me for some reason. There was a person out there who once helped build the house you are living in, another person out there who helped build the phone you are typing on, or the person who helped pave the road you commuted on this morning. The fact that the chair you are sitting on in the restaurant you having dinner at was occupied by so many people in it's history. People of all ages and backgrounds from different parts of the world. All the houses built in this world were built by some people. All the plumbing was created by someone. The laws we follow were created by someone. The words added to the English language for all the various chemicals that we discovered, all the bacteria that we know about were added by some people. You have a recollection of your dad and grandpa right? Did your grandpa know his grandpa? Did he know his grandpa? How far back does you family line go? When do they stop remembering their ancestors as "grandpa" (probably not human that far back)? It's crazy that each person on this planet has lineage that long. Even so far back that their minds just don't comprehend relationships or that the person that looks like you a little is your grandpa.
My thoughts hit me with all that nonsense above. Let me know if anyone agrees, feels, thinks about any of this.

2024.05.17 08:25 Old_Ad_8719 I wish I wasn’t having a kid

(m19) a few months ago i had decided l wanted to live life as a nomad. I hate staying in the same spot or being at the same job for longer than a couple months. It drives me crazy. All my happiness comes from being outdoors and exploring/learning.

at the time i had just graduated high school and as soon as i possibly could i hit the road, deciding to live in my car and work doordash for money. I had some emergency money saved up and a decent resume to get me a job if needed. I started in the CA bay area and made my way to LA, then Nevada, utah, AZ, NM, Colorado, Kansas, oklahoma as finally Texas where my car broke down. I was living in a walmart parking lot and got a job at starbucks to save up some money. I had just started community college online and I was having the time of my LIFE!! sleeping under the stars every night, something new always happening. It felt like an itch to be free had been scratched and i knew i wanted to live like this for the rest of my life, or as long as i realistically could. I had plans to visit as many states then countries as possible, all while going to school for biology. A few days after my car was fixed and i was on my way to kentucky my ex girlfriend called me saying she’s pregnant. After many fights i decide to make my way back to california so I can be in my kids life.
My baby mama wants to be with me so bad but i just can’t see myself spending my life with her. She’s amazing i just can’t rly see myself spending my life with anyone who isn’t down to live like i want to.
Anyways im back home, working full time, living with my parents and still going to school. I really don’t have anything to be complaining about but it feels like agony to me. I want to be outside, living like I was before all of this happened. I’m doing this because people tell me it’s the right thing to do. I haven’t just left because i don’t think i could knowing i’m having a child. I’m dating her to be in my kids life but i don’t really feel much. It’s bad because i tell her i love her and i treat her right in order to be a good example for my soon-to-be daughter, but it’s not genuine. She doesn’t know any of this and i tell her im gonna be there to be a good husband and father because i feel it’s what im “supposed” to say.

Back In school i would run away all the time just to go hop on a train to see where it would take me because i NEEDED to explore. My parents told me to wait until after high school to do stuff like that so i didn’t ruin my education- and the only way i could stay going to school doing the same thing everyday was when i was constantly high. So i was heavily smoking weed to not drive myself crazy feeling”trapped” until i graduated(with a 3.9). I’m back to staying high all the time for the same reason and i’ve resorted to convincing myself that ill be able to do all the things i want in my next life. I know i have a lot to look forward to with my daughter but i still wish things were different.

2024.05.17 08:24 cheembi What's better - passion or practicality?

Hi! I will graduate in a few days and will soon take RadTech but I'm not sure if I can maximize my opportunities in the future by taking that course. This course is for practicality, though, so I want it to be worth my time and scholarship since I can't afford to shift or go to college again.
In all honesty, taking a medical course is not my passion since I originally wanted to take a HUMSS-related course pero my results in my SHS entrance test told me that I'm better suited sa STEM. That's why I took STEM and am now having a dilemma even though the best decision for my situation right now is to choose a course with a steady income. I saw din how so many people lost their jobs nung pandemic because it was deemed not essential. Not to look down on them pero I don't wanna end up like that. I'm still going to take RadTech or maybe Pharm pero I wanna hear from your perspectives din. That's all and thanks!

2024.05.17 08:23 bearzbullzsoxhawkz How do I stop thinking about my existence and putting my brain in a bind?

I constantly wonder about: the lives of others, putting myself in other people's shoes, if it's possible that I crossed paths again with strangers from my past, and about how vast and obscure the world's population is.
Long post ahead so hear me out. Every once in a while I'll have these thoughts related to the existential stuff I mentioned in the title. Let's go piece by piece in a format that roughly follows my brains thoughts and see if anymore else ever thinks about this weird stuff.

I hate and love when my thoughts hit me with all that nonsense above. Let me know if anyone agrees, feels, thinks about any of this.
