Lower dose birth control - does it still help with PCOS symptoms?

2024.05.23 17:27 Priyo1111 Lower dose birth control - does it still help with PCOS symptoms?

Anyone take lower dose options like mircette/kariva, Loestrin, or Lo loestrin? Did it still help with your PCOS even with the lower dose of hormones?
I have struggled trying to restart the pill (after 4 years off) as all the standard dose ones make me feel awful and I just can't do it. Slynd was good but mentally was a no-go (same reaction as I had to Spiro). Combo pills have historically worked great for me but since I hit my 30s I just can't seem to tolerate side effects as well. Anyone else feel this?!

2024.05.12 22:37 mishandle123 Starting pill experience?

I have been perscribed mircette. My period started 3 days ago on my natural cycle and I wanted to do a sunday start so I took my first pill today.
I was bleeding normally this morning and now its the afternoon and my bleeding has more or less stopped. And im only day 3 on my period and usually it lasts 5 days.
Has anyone had this experience on the pill where they started it on their period and it more less lightened or stopped it?

2024.05.09 15:39 mishandle123 birth control Mircette experience? (aka. Viorele, Azurette, Kavaria etc...)

Hi all,
I recently had my gyn visit this week and talking about getting on BC for anti-baby reasons and PCOS reasons. Im mostly wanting it for PCOS reasons. Regardless, has anyone had any experience on this?
I've been on BC before (Sprintec, Microgestin 1/20, and mini pill) and tbh the one that I've had the most positive experience was the minipill until I had breakthrough bleeding, and boobs got sensitive probabs like 6 months on it.
I know Micrcette is on end of being least androgenic. I just want to hear anyone have any success on it? I was told it might help with the reducing hairloss and any chin hairs etc...

2024.04.27 23:55 PriorBoat Had Mirena for 24 hours

I'm curious as to whether anyone here experienced immediate (I mean immediate) worsening into depression after having Mirena inserted.
I'm 39, and have always been ridiculously sensitive to hormonal changes. The first time I took an oral contraceptive (which was Mircette, it's archaic, they probably don't even make it anymore) I spiraled into borderline s**c*d** clinical depression and then avoided hormonal birth control for the next 20 years.
But I decided to try Mirena because I'm recently diagnosed with endo and my periods became have become debilitatingly painful. I told my doctor about my hormonal sensitivity. Multiple times.
She told me she had never heard of anyone experiencing depression as a side effect of Mirena, and that the levonorgestrel basically doesn't enter your bloodstream. My gut told me not to do it. But I had it inserted earlier this week.
The following morning I woke up feeling hopeless, helpless and aggressively depressed. This must be a signal that it's not going to work out, right? I started a new antidepressant a few weeks ago, but I was finally feeling like myself again. Now I'm hopeless. Am I crazy or is it the IUD?

2024.03.28 17:29 lelsa125 Has anyone experienced consistent heavy breakthrough bleeding on the pill?

I’ve been on the pill for almost 5.5 years now, and no matter what I try, I always get pretty heavy breakthrough bleeding in the middle of my pack, and it lasts for about a week. Sometimes it’s minor spotting, sometimes I need to use some kind of liner. I’ve changed brands, and have also tried different types of pills (progestin only/combination), and every time, I experience the same thing. It happens around the 10th pill, and will go to the 16th-ish pill usually. And then it stops until my period. Yes I take the pill consistently at the same time. For awhile I even had an alarm so I could take it at the same exact time, but I didn’t notice any difference. I’ve tried skipping the placebo pills, and I would end up with a 2-3 week long period. So I am getting my normal period every month (which is pretty heavy considering how much I bleed a week and a half prior.) I don’t smoke, or drink, or take drugs, or even have any other prescriptions. I’ve been on my current pill for 6 months now, and still the same thing. Some of the other pills I’ve tried for 1 year +. Currently on Estarylla. Have been on Sprintec, Aviane, Junel Fe 1/20, and Mircette.
Has anyone experienced something like this? Have you had better luck with other birth control forms? I just would hate to get something like an IUD and still experience breakthrough bleeding. Everything I’ve read says this can happen within the first three months, or if you’re inconsistent, or if you smoke, or if you skip your period, and none of those apply to me.

2023.08.05 14:15 Opening_Culture_8069 Spotting during what would have been my period on first month of birth control

Hi everyone! I have been on multiple birth control pills at different intervals in my life and haven't experienced this. I just started Mircette July 9, and would have normally got my period this week. However, I'm going to be taking this pill continuously, so no period is expected.
I am spotting right now and having some menstrual symptoms (headache, nausea, fatigue). Is it normal to experience spotting, specifically around the time you would have gotten your period, when you start a new BC? Do I need to be worried about its efficacy?
Mostly just hoping to god I'm not pregnant. I had a negative pregnancy test (because I had unprotected sex and am paranoid) but it was 4 days before what would have been my missed period if I was not on BC, so kind of early.

2023.05.18 16:04 rayvingal Insurance coverage and Birth Control

Hello all!
This is the first time I've ever encountered this!
I'm in the USA with what's considered good health insurance
I have a copay for Lo Loestrin FE birth control pills. I thought it had to be copay free since it is a birth control that doesn't have any types of Generic on the market?
In the past, my 3 other insurance plans had no copay with this medication. Have you encountered this before? Or can someone explain why my insurance has the ability to charge a copay for birth control? I thought the ACA required birth control to be completely covered if there was no other type of Generic.
I called my insurance and they said that other types of pills wouldn't have a copay. They suggested asking for "Mircette" but that medication is different from Lo Loestrin; it doesn't have iron and the types of hormones are different.

2023.05.11 20:49 CMoJoJoJo83 New Cyclical Nausea & Physical Anxiety - Related to hormonal imbalance?

40 y.o. female experiencing new cyclical nausea, physical anxiety symptoms, and digestive issues. Super long history below... sorry.
I have been pretty healthy my entire life. I eat a healthy diet, try to stay active, don't smoke or drink, don't consume caffeine, dairy, or gluten when possible, get enough fiber, and drink plenty of water. I have never had nausea or anxiety with my periods (or really ever). They've been painful; I have endometriosis (had an endo resection and bilateral cystectomy of endometriomas in September 2022).
As of July 2022 I started experiencing debilitating nausea and anxiety during my periods, usually taking 2 weeks to recover and feel normal, just for the whole sh#t show to begin again. In August 2022 I had an endometrioma rupture, for which I had my surgery in September to remove and clean up the cyst and any endo my OBGYN saw. The nausea was okay for a month and then came back again. The doctors thought it was potentially endo on my intestines (although my OBGYN speculated it was only hemosiderin stains she saw on my intestines, not true endo, so it was not removed) and in October put me on Orilissa thinking suppressing my ovaries would help.
After starting the Orilissa I started experiencing more consistent nausea, anxiety, and digestive issues (constipation, diffuse abdominal burning, pain under my ribs), for which I was prescribed 10mg Lexapro to manage the anxiety and digestive issues that my GP felt was related to anxiety (started that January 2023).
My GI doctor was not convinced by then endo on the bowels theory and performed a HIDA scan that showed a low galldbladder ejection fraction, which they speculated was the reason I was sick. In January I had my gallbladder and appendix out. The surgeon took photos of my intestines and all of the hemosiderin staining was gone. She also noted that she saw no indication of endo on my bowels.
I stopped the Orilissa in the middle of February because I'm pretty sure it was what triggered my physical anxiety. I did fine during both my February and March periods as far as nausea goes, although the anxiety disnt really dissipate until March, so I thought the problem was finally over. April 1st rolls around and the nausea is back, not as severe as before the gallbladder, but still bad and lasts for most of my period (starting a few days prior). It then takes me two weeks to recover, and the whole thing starts yet again.
I was prescribed a continuous combined oral contraceptive (Azurette/Mircette) which I started this April 12th. I've been on it one month so far. My May period has not been as heavy, but the nausea, anxiety, and digestive issues are still present. I'm honestly tired of feeling sick all of the time. It tends to be worst in the mornings and sometimes subsides by the late afternoon, but just happens again the next day when I wake up (which has been happening at 4:00 daily during these episodes).
I was told I could be having this issue due to hormonal imbalances and that the birth control should settle things down in 3 months. I'm a little disheartened because I was told the same thing about the Orilissa (which just made me feel exponentially worse). Is there anything else that could potentially be causing the issue? I'm trying to be patient and give the birth control time to work, but am so tired of being sick. Is it possible for the ovarian cyst surgery to have caused hormonal issues? My cycles also became irratic starting in December. I just don't know what else to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

2023.05.01 18:13 SCL_AZ Comparison to Other Progestins

Hello! Does anyone have any data on the Progestin potency for Segesterone Acetate/Nestorone in Annovera? How does it compare to other progestins? I cannot seem to find anything specifically on this progestin because it isn’t orally bioavailable (whereas most others are more heavily researched based on oral consumption). Struggling to find a bc alternative and not prepared to go without hormonal contraceptives (yet). A bit of history— *Was on Lutera for 10+ years, no side effects until a started getting awful headaches during placebo days. Headaches started to hang around longer and longer which was not sustainable. (20mcg Estradiol / .1mg Levonorgestrel) *Switched to Lo Loestrin for 3ish years. Headaches were gone but the constant spotting/breakthrough bleeding never subsided and was nearly constant and annoying. (10mcg Estradiol / 1mg Norethindrone Acetate) *Switched to Mircette/Kariva for 3ish years. Issues with weight gain and mood but no headaches or spotting. (20mcg Estradiol / .15mg Desogestrel) *Just switched back to Lo Loestrin but know it’s not a long term solution
The lower Estrogen in the Annovera seems good✔️ But am concerned about the Progestin and side effects

I am supposed to start this BCP for peri this weekend. My gyn wants to try this before HRT. I still have a monthly cycle but it has been shifting around a lot. I am very, very nervous to take these pills after many online reviews. I know I shouldn't scare myself but I also do not want to feel any crazier than I already do. Anyone taken this type of BCP for peri? What was your experience?

2022.09.07 21:52 clararockmore Going off BC… thoughts?

Hi, so long story short—I have always had irregular and rough periods since puberty, as well as extra hair growth in odd patches. At age 19, I started taking birth control. At the time, I was told I couldn’t have PCOS because I didn’t have issues with managing my weight.
Now I’m 31, and over the years I’ve been on low ogestrel, ortho tri-cyclen, a brief stint on Mircette, sprintec, a brief stint on the NuvaRing, and now Vestura (drospirenone). A couple of years ago, a gynecologist was like “yeah, it does sound like you have PCOS” and explained the different ways it can present in-depth.
Since then, I’ve educated myself a lot more about PCOS. One of the things that keeps coming up is the idea that birth control pills “mask” the symptoms, but don’t address the underlying issues. From what I can guess about my underlying reasons for having PCOS, I think the most likely culprit is high cortisol due to stress (I don’t seem to have insulin resistance or any of the other normal factors). I have always been an anxious person, with being “high strung” as my natural state.
I am finally in a place in which I feel like I’m better-equipped to manage my stress, including managing my ADHD with medication, which has finally made me a CALM person. I have a job that pays me well enough, health insurance, and a secure home (lack of these things were previously huuuge sources of stress).
Apart from one brief stint when I went off BC and went back on after a condom failure scared me, I have been consistently on hormonal BC for 12 years. I suppose the BC helps, especially with regulating my periods, but I also don’t know how it would even compare to being without BC.
I have an appointment with my gyno coming up, and I wanted to discuss the possibility of going off BC with her. I am curious to try it and see what happens, but also afraid that I’ll mess something up with my cycle/health or like, not be attracted to my partner anymore.
A lot of women talk about the benefits of quitting BC, but how does that work for women with PCOS? Has anyone tried this, and was it successful or did you end up back on BC?

2022.06.29 06:04 No-Can-6645 Quitting after first month

(17F) I started volnea/kariva/mircette as a means to treat PMDD and cycle irregularities and am on my first pack. I’ve never taken bc before and while I knew there would be symptoms, I was not ready for it. I’ve been bleeding for three weeks since my period ended, mood instability, nausea, and bloating/weight gain. I deal with a restrictive ED and body dysmorphia and feel as though I would rather endure the absolute hell of a two weeks before my period than a constant state of “bleh” on bc. I don’t know that I could deal with the next few months in the hopes that my body would regulate. I’m on my last week of the pack and considering just quitting after I finish it, but I’m also concerned about the side effects of quitting. Does anyone have any experience or advice for my situation?

2022.06.18 15:28 wonderingwoman_9999 Birth Control Questions

Hi there, every since I switched from Yaz to Kariva last year, my hair has become insanely thin and gross. Kariva is a generic for Mircette. I was told Kariva is low-androgen, however, my hair has been thinningin an androgenic pattern all year. I do not want to use minox just yet.
Has anyone had any experience going back onto Yaz? Or I was told Sprintec is another low androgen birth control. I am scared that when I do switch, I'll experience another shed :( I feel like I cannot win.

2022.05.23 09:02 status_madicus Skyla and Viorele for cysts ruining sex drive and mood

I (23F) have been on Skyla for the past 3 years and I've adored it. Previously I've had issues with depression and nonexistent sex drive while on Microgestin FE 1/20 and my uterus is too small for any IUD but Skyla.
Unfortunately, I started developing painful ovarian cysts this year. Constant lower abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, no appetite. I lost 20 lbs and I'm bordering on an unhealthy BMI from it. Episodes of severe pain leaving me curled up and crying. My GYN recommended adding a low dose combo pill (Viorele, generic for Kariva/Mircette) to prevent ovulation and stop them from developing, in addition to my Skyla.
I've only been taking it for about a week but I feel horrible. I literally can't get aroused, I feel absolutely nothing down there no matter what I or my partner try. I had a great sex drive we were both happy with before starting this. Almost no vaginal discharge either, it's like a desert. My mood has been horribly low and I'm crying daily. What's worse though is that my ovarian cyst pain is already subsiding and my appetite is coming back, so I know it must be doing something already.
I fucking hate this and I'm considering just throwing out the pack and dealing with being underweight and in pain instead at this point.

2022.05.16 20:14 tmighty55 Best birth control for hair growth? Lo Loestrin or Mircette or....?

I'm 44F and have had a ton of hair loss the past few years after discontinuing my spironolactone. I'm going back on that but my gyno also thinks I should go on birth control. The only reason is for hair regrowth so want to make sure I go on the right one.
Anyone have experience with either Lo Loestrin or Mircette helping with hair growth?

2022.03.08 03:09 Gramsx Which Birth Control Worked Best For You; Please Help.

I was just prescribed Viorele for my PCOS. It's a generic version of Mircette which I heard is good itself, however, Viorele causes terrible side effects. This includes insane mood swings, depression anxiety, weight gain, low sex drive, dryness down there, increased acne, and the list goes on.
My doctor literally told me Mircette doesn't cause weight gain so I'm confused as to why everyone whos taking Viorele reports weight gain. I guess it's this type of BC
Anyways, I think I should at least try it out for a month and see how it works out but at the same time I just want to call my doctor and ask for something else
I know this is a combination birth control, prescribed specifically for PCOS. So please, what BC did you guys use that worked best for you?
Im currently looking at Lo Loestrin Fe, Azurette, and Sprintec seem to have the best reviews.
Any help is appreciated
TL;DR: I was prescribed Viorele for my PCOS but the reviews are terrible, which birth control worked best for you/ gave you minimal side effects?

2022.02.24 15:22 Dont_Fall_Asleep1323 Azurette (generic Mircette) placebo pill questions

I’ve read the pamphlet that came with my azurette prescription and have been doing research online for the past hour but I haven’t been able to find the answer I’m looking for. My azurette prescription comes with 21 blue pills followed by 2 white pills then 5 green pills. As far as I know, the 2 white pills are placebos and the final 5 green pills are estrogen only. Why does this pill pack only have 2 placebos? And why is there estrogen at the end of the cycle and not placebo pills? I don’t necessarily want to skip my period, but if I ever did how would I do this? It’s been hard coming up with the answer since all the information I’ve found online is about packs with 4 placebo or 7 placebo pills. I haven’t been able to find information about pill packs with 3 colors like mine. If anyone has any answers, please let me know! Anything is appreciated. Thank you so much!
