(sorry this is so long I wanted to fully explain it since nothing else does)
using a subtitle player, https://github.com/carsonip/Penguin-Subtitle-Player, it's possible to display ripped subtitles over any video (or a black background so there's nothing)
the subtitles are fully customizable. so placement, size, font, color etc can be set. and by default it remembers everything you set.
in order to make Windows have a completely blank desktop, with absolutely nothing at all I used https://m.majorgeeks.com/files/details/autohidedesktopicons.html, but there's probably others.
I've found there's 2 ways to use it best. either have an external monitor (my tv) with the Airs acting as a 2nd extended display (so it's just an empty black desktop on the Airs), or if the Airs are solo, and the video + subs are on the same screen. (update really 3. the way I use it the most is my tv is independent and I just play stuff on there. the Airs are a 2nd monitor on my pc, and only have the transparent player on a black backpack. my other monitor is really for the mouse.)
when I want to have the ability to see my surroundings, and not just have a video blocking the center of my vision the entire time, just having the subs alone is pretty great. so I'll move only the subtitle box onto the Airs display. you can temporarily change the background so you can see it if you need to. it allows me to not be forced to turn my head and only look at the tv in order to read the subtitles. I can eat, or check my phone or do anything. I can quickly move my eyes to look at the subtitles, and not just be alerted by them speaking a language I don't understand.
for Netflix, you can easily get a script that'll rip the subtitles from each episode or season (or entire show) it's for Chrome. (think FF, and a few others too)

need greasemonkey extension to run it. or there's a few extensions to run user scripts.
it'll rip whatever you tell it (make sure to set the language first), if there's no English audio track, you'll just have a subtitle track for every episode. otherwise you'll see [cc] and forced for every track. it puts everything in a single zip file with the show name.
for Viki and YouTube etc there's no automated way, so you need to individually grab the subtitles for every episode. I've found https://downsub.com/ to be easiest.
on my pc it's just organized by type (kdrama, cdrama, jdrama, etc) then each type by service, then the show name. and to make it easy in Windows each show has a preview image. (the name of the file doesn't matter) on the show folder you go to properties/customize and set it. makes it way easier.
the most difficult thing can be to sync the subs to the video. the >> and << skip quickly between next/prev text lines. >> and << ffwd or rewind based on the ms you set (mine is 500ms. 1s is 1000ms) so manually you can get it pretty close. maybe not perfect though.
the player has the ability to hit play simultaneously when you hit play on another player. I normally get everything 100% ready. load the subtitle I want (you can drag and drop onto it, and that's easiest) sync the time of the penguin player as Netflix, Viki. then right click the pause, click the menu item, and the next left click will simultaneously hit play. so when you hit play in Netflix etc it'll play the subs. you can disable the Netflix or viki subs. then go fullscreen with it.
you can use the same method to pause. and then resume. you almost never need to manually sync it.
(I've also manually synced it by watching it with my fire TV app. which is much easier on Viki because when you pause it shows the current time. it's what I do during the day. I make the glasses a second external display, and have a monitor on my right for the mouse.)
I mostly use Netflix and Viki, but this will work with any subtitled content. you just need the file and to sync it.
update it's also much more comfortable to wear for hours. because the glasses don't need to sit in a certain position for best video.

edit: This turned out not to be a Firefox issue. This was solved by resetting my NVRAM/PRAM
Beginning yesterday, most common video formats on reddit (streamable, reddit video player, streamja, streamwo, some imgur links, etc) no longer play properly. Even with autoplay enabled, videos will show the first few frames and then freeze while the audio continues to play.
However, sites like Youtube and streaming services like Netflix and Hulu work just fine. Could this have to do with updating to MacOS Big Sur 11.6?

So I've spent the better portion of last month sifting through posts from users asking how to split/partition their desktop real estate. To help the new ascended and long time users who may not know what is available I am providing some information in no particular order. While I may not get all of them in one go here are some programs that I have tested personally and have made good use of them on my SUW/UW monitors. The ones listed are either free or have trial periods that you can test before buying. This is not a tutorial. Google and Youtube will be your best friend but I'm happy to help as well as others who know answers to your questions. Also, I will include programs that help maximize your video playbacks. It comes close to watching videos and movies near full screen without going full screen. Links will be provided to their respective websites/authors. For the gamers out here I have yet to find a program that will help with this so I sometimes run games in windowless/windowed mode. I know its not the best setup but for some who stream or need the ability to multitask you have that as an option. This is primarily targeted to users who only have 1 monitor, myself coming from 2 UW to a Samsung CRG9, but these can be applied to multi-monitor setups.

It has a good shortcut set up for "the on the fly user". Steam sometimes has this program on sale so if you like it keep a look out for it.

Chrome extension for Youtube videos. It has a lot of customizations including removing assets, changing colors, and setting up your default preferences. Note to take full windows space make sure to enable "Theater Mode". Also, change default resolution to your highest resolution your monitor can go so all videos don't start in "Auto" resolution.

Once you've done that, you'll see a "Subtitles" button showing up next to the "Share" button under the Youtube video. For the first time, click on the ""Subtitles" button and switch to the "Settings" tab and check "Automatically search and load subtitles in future".

As we continue to translate these clips, we'll be uploading them to a subtitle database called amara.org and this extension will automatically search for subtitles on it. If it can find subtitles online, it'll automatically load it up and you'll be ready to go. If something is not working, you can switch to the "Upload" tab. Drag the .SRT file you downloaded into the grey box and just hit play!

Youtube updated its user interface in the summer of 2017. It broke all of the extensions and userscripts mentioned on this page. What you have to do is to click on your user button (circle at the top-right corner), and choose "Restore old YouTube" from the menu and you'll get the old interface back.
Q: How can I download Youtube videos for offline viewing (e.g. using VLC)?
A: First install the Greasemonkey (Firefox) or Tampermonkey (Chrome) extension. They enable the user to load userscripts to manipulate or extend the functionality and look of your web pages. Just got the 13" tMBP i5 16GB 512GB, on the 28th. Been using it for the past 3 days, for normal tasks like browsing and installing all my stuff.
To get this out of the way, I love it. The trackpad is amazing, I'm really digging the new keyboard, the touchbar seems useful for many things, speakers are awesome, the display is great, and this thing plays Rocket League at 25-35 fps at everything maxed, at the highest resolution. Day to day usage is also pretty snappy, and I don't really think that the best and the greatest processor would affect it too much. I really like the heat management on this thing, the fans don't really turn on unless I'm in RL (haven't had the chance to do other intensive work). They do have a low pitch hum when they're going full tilt, but its acceptable. Overall, I think this machine justifies its cost, based on the design and the user experience.
My biggest concern with this thing is the battery. I did a full rundown today, it lasted it little less than 6.5 hours. Let me tell you exactly what I had running-

• Safari with wipr (Adblock) and Greasemonkey + Last pass, 4 tabs (had more at one point, but safari caches the page and clears it out of the memory anyway)
  
• BTT with 4-5 gestures
  
• Logitech Gaming software
  
• Magnets (window management)

• Keynote (A few minutes)

• Whatsapp web app, no active windows.

• Screen share with Apple for 30 minutes
  
• Brightness at 50%
  

I called apple to send me another laptop, and I asked for an advanced replacement seeing as my machine is built to order and might take a few weeks to deliver. They screen shared to check in on the battery, they say everything looks fine (concerning the diagnostics).
Now. In my view, all this is still light use, I know the list might look long, but consider that I listed all the things I'm running.
To further my point, I kept an eye on the power usage in coconut battery, it was consistently under 15 watts, the average being ~9. I think that this is a pretty good indicator for measuring how much time remains on the battery, since I know that my average use rounds up to around 9 watts, I can extrapolate that the MacBook would last around 5-6 hours, based on my usage in the past few days.
Alright. So I'm on macOS 10.12.2. After the last test, I reset the SMC. Will update the post tomorrow to tell you guys if I get any gains.
My question to all of you-

• What do you think about this battery life related to the older MacBooks and other laptops? I paid 2150EUR for this laptop, I don't want to keep looking at the battery levels to try and find faults with my laptop.
  
• Do you think I should return it and get a refund? The thing is, I baby the shit out of my laptops. I have a 5 year old Thinkpad L420 that still gets around 50 minutes of charge on it's original battery because I rarely unplug it. But I'd like to get value out of my money and I really don't wanna pay for "misstep" in apple's Mac lineup. I feel like if they had just advertised 8 instead of 10, I'd still be fine with the battery I'm currently getting, instead of feeling like I could have spent all this money somewhere else.

EDIT 2- Btw, If you're gonna suggest waiting for the 2017 refresh, please also include when you think the refresh is gonna happen, because I sure as shit cannot wait another year till they refresh this. At max, May seems to be something I'm okay with, and even then I'd consider keeping this one and selling it before the new ones come out because apple retains it's resale value.

I'm trying to randomize my DVD queue.
I added about 400 movies at once in chronological order from 2014 to 1920. I would prefer not to watch them in this order. I found Netflix Queue Sorter, installed it via greasemonkey, and tried to run it in Firefox but it doesn't seem to be working.

I just started looking into it all with hopes of finding an extension or something that could shuffle my Netflix list. I found Netflix Queue Sorter and installed greasemonkey and installed the script NQS script, but nothing happens. I don't know anything about userscripts or greasemonkey at all, so I'm not sure if this is a passive feature or something that I have to manually active when I choose to. If it's passive, nothing happened; if it's active, I don't know where or how to activate it. If anyone has any input, that'd be a great help.

I'm hoping this is just a glitch or something, but it definitely seems like they removed the button to add the streaming version of a movie to the instant queue ("My List") from the DVD site (dvd.netflix.com). Now the only two options are "Play" which starts streaming it, or "Add" which adds it to the DVD queue. To add it to the streaming queue you have to go streaming site (netflix.com, sans dvd sub-domain).
This is extremely annoying and I hope it is temporary. If not, I'll probably try to work on a greasemonkey script to add the option back or something.
Anyone else seeing this?
 
Edit: Ok, after closer inspection it seems like the html code for the button is still there but disabled by a css script for some reason, hopefully by mistake.
This css code causing this is:

It's hard to find good scripts these days. I'd really like to find one that puts a link to imdb and/or rottentomatoes ratings. I used to have one but it stopped working at some point

There are only a few things I dislike with Netflix. One of them are that you cannot filter and hide already watched content So, if anyone is interested, I have created a very basic Greasemonkey Script for Firefox - for fun - that dims out movies you have rated. An example is:

According to Netflix customer support representative, Missy, the site underwent some changes recently which removed the entire category and replaced the Recently Watched button with a link to my viewing history.
Now, 4-5 clicks to get to something I watched recently isn't horrible, but from a purely quality-of-life standpoint (and from a business standpoint for people on tiered/metered internet connections), a few extra clicks in getting to your content starts to add up over time, which sucks. Especially for those of us on somewhat more limited mobile data plans.
Missy said she'd pass on the feedback to the higher-ups, but in the meantime, does anyone know of a Greasemonkey script or something to bring me back my beloved Recently Watched category?

Hi there, I've been sampling a lot of the sites that come through here since about March and have compiled this guide to what I feel is the most effective use of my time online. I've fallen into a sort of daily rotation for most of them, with extra work on the side when I have the spare time.
Start:
Superpoints (go find a ref link in this subreddit!)
I start here with the superlucky button in it's own window. In chrome the button will not animate when you switch tabs, but it will if you change windows. The 4-6 seconds between clicks is plenty of time to do a few clicks in another window, so I do a spin when I am waiting for a page to load during the rest of my time. In a second window I open superpoint's videos page (gambit videos) and start them playing.
Swagbucks refnon-ref
My bookmark for swagbucks contains a search string, so I go directly to a search result page.
From there I open up their NOSO, Daily Poll, and Special Offers in tabs. Head over to the gambit special offers page and start any videos. Open up the below page as well and also head over to their special offer gambit video page, and check all three gambit video pages inbetween tasks. I skip any videos that aren't actually videos (installs, etc).
Vote in the poll and complete the NOSO gauntlet. If I didn't win the search bucks right away, I click a few related searches (not too quickly) until I do. If I have extra free time later, the other offer walls are worth checking for videos. Signing up for facebook apps with a fake facebook is a great way to earn a bunch of one-time credits quickly. I generally do not do surveys here and elsewhere, since getting disqualified and being left with nothing sucks.
There are also occasional offers you can come out ahead on, i.e.: Try gamefly for 6.99 for the first month and earn 1000SB. You can earn about $4 on an offer like that if you can remember to cancel. (I use Google calendar for this) The only reason not to get the free netflix month is if you don't have a credit card (or already have netflix), you can get 1000SB there too. I only cashout the $5 amazon cards.
There are websites that will text you when there is an active swagcode. I reccomend them.

Zoombucks is the slightly less polished version of Swagbucks. Here too my bookmark is a search query. As mentioned above, we're here for the gambit videos- because you don't have to do anything to receive credit for watching them like enter numbers or take a quiz or pay attention in any way. I don't do much else here.
InboxDollars refnon-ref
You can get paid 1c per search, up to five per day, on the search bar from their website. They also send paid emails. If you use a filter, you can have them set aside to not clutter your inbox. At 2c to open and close a tab, paid emails are easy, and don't necessarily need to be checked daily. You will want to indicate you have a lot of interests (like, all of them) in your profile surveys (which you also get paid for) to get a lot of emails. This applies to the below sites as well.
SendEarnings refnon-ref
Run by the same company as above, and even has the same look. You can have accounts on both sites, but this one does not have the search bar. Strictly for the emails here.

If you havent caught the latest craze yet, go sign up. Jingit is easily the most lucrative site out of all of them. They pay out on their own visa debit card (costs you your first $2- the USBank TOS Says $10 for an issuing fee, but it does not charge you that- mine is already on the way). Untested, I am at my cap for this week. I am passing this along from the author of the firefox greasemonkey script that does the same thing. Video from any site, including paid sites like Netflix is super laggy. The video can be fully buffered and it still does it. It is almost like it is playing every few frames or something. I can't stand watching anything that's longer than a minute now. I tried it on Chrome and it worked fine, and I can watch full HD video via VLC or WMP with no issues. I have cleared my history, cookies, etc, but the problem still persists. I am running FF 6.0.2 with ABP, Download Statusbar, Downloadhelper, Ghostery, greasemonkey (only with autopagerize script), and WOT. I am on a x64 HP TM2T laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5450 graphics card.
Any ideas for a solution?
