Graduation cakes for dentists

My first 1/2 sheet cake

2024.05.18 22:32 Substantial-Ferret92 My first 1/2 sheet cake

My first 1/2 sheet cake
A coworker asked me to make a last minute half sheet cake for a graduation party. I usually stick to circular cakes so my rectangular cake skills are limited.
I am pleased with the outcome even though I can see/know all the "flaws". I definitely under charged (by a lot) for this cake and it is a lesson learned for future cakes of this size.

2024.05.18 19:40 Many-Caterpillar-390 Toxic family with daughter manipulating and mom emotionally abusive

I (48F) don’t even know where to begin so let’s start from the end. My daughter, D, (18F, I’ll use an initial for my daughter’s name) graduated high school Tuesday night. I organized a graduation dinner at a nice restaurant Wednesday night on me as part of her graduation present. I picked mom up for the graduation ceremony Tuesday night and mom starts to take digs at me. She has been taking digs at me for a week now ever since my daughter and her reconciled. I have backstory about that further down. I let those digs go since they were in the middle of the ceremony and my ex husband was seated next to us in the arena.
Fast forward to the next day, Wednesday, I am hustling all day to get ready for the graduation dinner. I got flowers from the grocery store and arranged two different bouquets into one. I went to Party City to pick up balloons that I ordered online. I had contacted a local home baker for my daughter’s allergy free graduation cake so I also picked up her cake. These were all things that I had intended to bring to the restaurant as a surprise. After checking with the restaurant about bringing the cake, it turns out the restaurant has an allergy safe dessert so I can’t bring it. I pivot and I let my daughter know that I have a surprise graduation cake for her and that I would like to drop it by her dad’s house. It had a whipped frosting so it required refrigeration as soon as possible. I pick up the cake at the 2:30pm. Ask my daughter if she is home and can I bring it by. She says yes and that her dad isn’t home but maybe we could have a slice together. I said that I don’t have a lot of time (I needed to pick up mom for dinner at 4:45pm plus squeeze in a little work and get ready for dinner) but worst case I can take a slice to go for me and mom. We ended up having a slice with her dad because he came back home right away. I go home. Get dressed for dinner, work on a few work emails, and run to pick up mom.
When I get there, she doesn’t say hello but asks me where her cake is. I groan because I forgot it in the fridge but I can tell that something is off. She then asks me hostilely why I didn’t invite her to my ex’s house for cake. I tell her that it was spontaneous and there was a lot going on in preparation for the graduation dinner. It didn’t occur to me in that moment that my daughter should have been the one to ask her over since it’s not my house. Nor did it occur to me in that moment, that my mom and D must’ve talked about this cake thing.
So I am driving to dinner and my mom is not letting this go. She starts to lay into me about excluding her and I calmly ask her to stop. She continues and starts raising her voice. I tell her there wasn’t anything intentionally done and it was spontaneous! She is yelling on the top of her lungs at this point so I yell back that I have not done anything wrong here and that she needs to cut it out. At this point she starts saying that she needs to get out of the car. I tell her to keep it together for my daughter’s sake. I stop at a stop light and she jumps out after thrusting the glass vase with the flowers at me that she was holding. I start crying and call my daughter immediately. She empathizes, asks what happened, I tell her that I don’t want to ruin her night but she insisted so I pour my heart out and cry most of the way there because our ETA was similar. Note that she is in the car with her dad and best friend and in hindsight I think that I might’ve been on speaker. I arrive at the restaurant with the flowers and balloons and we are having a nice time. Halfway through eating our entrees, my mom shows up. I didn’t tell her where the reservation was. My mom likes to be taken to things and doesn’t care to know in advance where we are going so this is normal for us. I was shocked. My mom looks around the booth and my ex makes room for her. I didn’t move in my shock but I don’t think that I would have made room for her regardless. While she is talking to my ex (whom she has hated for years based on how he treated my dad as my dad was dying), my daughter leans over and asks me if this was okay and I tell her that I didn’t tell mom where we were going. D says that she didn’t either.
Mom doesn’t look at the menu but is prepared and orders her entree. Keep in mind, she has not been to this restaurant before. I ignore her and do not make eye contact from across the table. I have never seen her eat that fast. I lost my appetite the minute she arrived. After she finishes, she leaves the booth to visit to the restroom. At that point, I tell my daughter that to be clear I was not okay with this. My daughter says why and I respond because of how she treated me and she says how did she treat you and I looked at her shocked and said I told you just after it happened. She says oh and then says well I am glad she came. So at this point, I am shocked again. This seems intentional and not coincidental. I had thought maybe it was coincidental because I had talked about what entree I was thinking about ordering. We finish up and I pay for dinner. We leave together. I haven’t spoken to either since.
I would talk to my mom everyday and text my daughter everyday. I initiate those points of contact. I haven’t spoken to either of them since Wednesday. Neither has reached out to me. Am I off track here? What on earth is this? It feels like manipulation and backstabbing. It feels like my daughter went behind my back and triggered my mom against me. I’m trying to understand but I am too close to this to see it clearly. Please help me understand if I messed up or what I should do. I frankly don’t want to speak to either of them for awhile which works out since I am going out of the country for 20 days in less than a week.
Some background; D has been living her last year of high school with my ex husband (53M) because her high school, college (she was talking a college class in the mornings and high school in the afternoons), and work in the evenings were all closer from his house than mine as I live 30 mins away from those areas. She also favors him as he acts as a roommate versus a dad towards her.
She reconciled with my mom (74F) last week after they stopped speaking for 2.5 years. My mom was not understanding of my daughter’s medical diagnosis then and was mean/hurtful about it so my daughter stopped talking to her. I would consistently suggest reconciliation to both of them whenever they would ask about each other because it’s just the three of us. My dad passed 12 years ago. My family on my mom’s side has passed and the remaining family (my mom’s sister and her two daughters that I grew up with) are toxic so we don’t speak to them. They are toxic in the sense that when my grandma died they drafted a fake Will and filed it with the courts cutting mom out.
Ever since D and mom reconciled, my mom has been taking digs at me. Mom has always done this whenever something bothers her. She has been saying things like at least D talks to your face. I am old school and respectful to my elders. My daughter, on the other hand, is influenced by her dad and speaks disrespectfully to whomever she disagrees with. I have been setting boundaries and sticking up for myself with my mom recently.
I’m am trying to figure out what is happening here. I don’t think that I am off track feeling hurt and betrayed. I also don’t think it would make a difference to talk to them until I get back. Am I missing something? Please help me objectively understand.

2024.05.18 19:21 Even-Reaction-1297 Fanciest cake I’ve made

Fanciest cake I’ve made
Not my first cake but my second cake I’ve actually put effort into decorating (the first one was a red, white, and blue unicorn cake for a Fourth of July birthday party).
I attempted to do that vintage cake decorating trend, but with whipped cream instead of buttercream so it’s not as perfect as those. My sister in law graduated yesterday and told me she likes green, yellow, and orange. I wasn’t sure how it would look with all three colors but I love it ❤️ it’s kinda hard to tell the orange and yellow apart on camera, but I think she’s so pretty! The graduation cap on top was a last minute decision but I think it’s cute
It’s a chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling, buttercream crumb coat, and vanilla whipped cream on the outside 🎂

2024.05.18 18:21 golden-tears Nmom tries to put on this fake act in front of others and gets mad when I refuse to participate in it

The other day, my nmom said she was going to “throw a grad party” for me since I recently graduated university. I hated this whole thing because I knew there was an ulterior motive for it and I even told her not to do this. I am not close with either of my parents, in fact, I hate them so much and they know that. I knew them throwing a “party” was just so they can have their own get-together with their friends and just an excuse for them to use against me for whatever reason. For example, “I spent all this money on your party and you’re still disrespectful.” Fast forward, the stupid party happened and it was horrible. My nmom kept bothering me and kept trying to be attached to me ALL DAY. I was so uncomfortable because she wanted to pretended that we were “close” when we were not and it was clearly just a show. She kept giving me these hugs in front of everyone and even tried to feed me cake which is just so GROSS. (BTW my nmom told me the day before this happened that she was going to do this and I told her that if she tried to, I was not doing it.) When I told her to stop and I wasn’t going to do that, she got mad at me and so did her stupid ass friends. Her friends kept enabling her behavior and was like “just do it” “why don’t you wanna do it” “shes your mom” “why are you doing this.” I was so ANGRY. If I say I don’t want to do something, THEN LEAVE ME ALONE. Everyone there was getting mad and kept pressuring me. I was so uncomfortable and nearly cried. Even with all of these grown ppl screaming at me, i refused to do it. My nmom started getting mad and literally yelled, “ITS MY DAY” like bitch how is it your day when it’s not even ur graduation? The way they initially said this “party” was for me but suddenly switched it to herself. Insane. Anyways, I ended up walking away and just went to my room and cried a bit. I just hate how all of these grown ppl felt the need to YELL at me and try to force me to do something I didn’t want to do. The level of entitlement from everyone in that room was disgusting. One might say they didn’t know my mother is a narcissist but at the end of the day, why are you forcing someone to do what they don’t want to do? Literally disgusting behavior and I hope they all get everything worse coming at them.

2024.05.18 17:46 JustAscrub-_- UB Undergrad Managment Graduation

Is it just me or was it absoluty insulting they first stuff us in a room with trash ventilation feeling like everything was last minute and rushed with all the chaos. When we are slowly funneled to the front where we are to sit the ub President advertised ub more then he congratulated us and joked about cake and the solar eclipse. The other guy was slightly more understandable but he was also no diffrent bragg bragg bragg. Then when It came for us to be "Celebrated" we were just rushed through the stage like cattle 10 seconds on stage. Like ik ub is like this but they could've done more for how much the school of managment brings for them. I felt like missing graduation would've been a better memory.

2024.05.18 14:52 EggplantRough6633 Ranking All Classes I've taken Too!((MonkeyPOV))

Well, praying that I didn't fail my last two classes💀 I’m finally done with my degree. So why not share my unfiltered opinion/experience that I’m sure Faculty has been eagerly waiting for? Ranking wrt:
Course Content / Instructor / Organization / Exam/Pset Difficulty. Copying most recent post's format. Major congrats and shoutout to all graduating this semester and beyond, it's been more than real.
A lil motivation: don't give up, don't ever give up...
live look at brain having bruh moment during exam (is this a record?)
S-TIER:
  1. CS 1110 - Intro CS Python: Will always be goated course for me. After switching majors, was very intimidated by CS. Prof Lee/Bracy & staff were godsent, course was very enjoyable and beginner friendly (duh) while remaining very fulfilling and challenging. Projects/Labs were very helpful and plenty of resources for help, enjoyed studying for exams and material thoroughly. Thank god I did not stick w Matlab (unbiassed opinion why do you ask)
  2. ORIE 3500 - Prob & Stats II: An out of whack sequenced class took during summer but love how Goldberg teaches. Not sure if still applicable but grading was very friendly and not a lot of tedious course work but learned a lot and enjoyed class. Exams were challenging but fun and grade cutoff made learning pressure-free. Shoutout D Goldberg one of my favorite professors
  3. ORIE 4580 - Simulation Modeling: Took this course w/o prereqs so was unprepared but Henderson is amazing person & Professor and will help you out. Really enjoyed Simio and project/assignments were fun, interactive, interesting. Shoutout Henderson: great guy award helped me through rough spot super approachable/easy to talk to. Decent amount of work and I didn't understand half of it but tools and info still relevant
A-TIER:
B-TIEUSEFUL:
MIDDLE-UPPER-LOWER-TIEGEED:
EASY/CREDIT:
BUNS:
  1. MATH 1910 - Calc I: Did shitty after prelim 1, not bad course but possibly recommend taking CASE exam if you already know material, kind of waste
  2. ENGRD 2110 - Obj-Oriented Prog: Took in summer, was hopeful after enjoying CS1110 but class and content not as fun. Liked VanHattum, call me?
  3. PHYS 2213 - EM: Imma be 100p here and not even pretend I deserve credit hours for this course but was available online (ilovecovid) so that was no brainer. Least favorite stem class. Dont cae
  4. PSYCH 2350: Don't remember taking this. typical canvas credit course
FEVER DREAM / C&B TORTURE:
  1. ORIE 3510 - Stoch Proc I: Second class I failed 😎 Somehow made less sense 2nd time. Cursed course its hard to recognize when you are fully wrong/using wrong intuition but you might not realize this until you get a 31 on the Final. Must attend in person. Thought it would cake retaking but had Scully who is great guy/genius but taught it almost entirely different format than previous year. Info seemed to go in one ear (wp= u/λ) and out the other, not a fan of his notes/material organization. Scully is huge improvement from Dai nonetheless.
  2. MATH 2930 (First time😉)- DiffEq: My first failure!🤓 (took it when it was hard i swear) Even though 1st time through was rough, enjoyed solving equations and remains my central to major, def most involved of required math courses. Restructured version was an actual joke compared to previous year, legit had the option to retry & submit everything you turned in until you essentially got it right via brute-force submitting every possible answer.
  3. FWS: (Challenges of Modernity): Sigh
  4. ENGRI 1160 - Modern Structures: cool project but prof was hard to understand and psets were way too hard for sem1 intro eng course. TA could barely help, made me switch out of civil
  5. FWS(Anthrop Persp. of Tech Worlds)?: Now they invent ChatGPT, sick
O-H
  1. BIOG 1250 - Biology Seminar (The Rise and Fall of Viruses): Went to class for 3 weeks and learned ab Kentucky bluegrass and rocks, realized class wouldn't count towards major so dropped but figured I'd throw it in here.

2024.05.18 03:43 Fiirefly42 Does early career = nothing else but work? PTO troubles

I hold a co-op position (8-months Jan-Aug, salary, unlimited PTO) It’s a co-op/internship so maybe that’s why it’s looked down upon.
But I got push back on some PTO I requested.
I requested 2 days due to my grandfather passing. He agreed to it but asked me to evaluate myself on how many days I’m taking off.
I went back and counted the doctors/dentist/eye/ and misc appointment added up to 10 hours over the 5 months so far.
I took 4 days off earlier in the internship and I was sick for 2 days (bringing this up because he used as push back)
I had covid and thought about coming in since I knew as an intern I should be at work as much as I can. But manager let me know being a team player would be to not come in
The 4 days I already mentioned was suppose to be 5 for spring break (in college, co-op, HR asked the team to let me have a spring break) but I wanted to be in office as much as I can so I opted out on the double weekend and came in Monday before I left.
I work 45 hour weeks, so overall I’ve taken off 5 days and 1 hour, plus 2 sick days (18 hours of sickness)
In lieu of the “evaluate yourself” I’ve decided to not take the days off.
I also no longer care how sick I am, and will come in with the black plaque need be.
I’m returning to school in the fall and will graduate may 2025. So I’m starting to look for a career.
Is this what early career is like? No time for anything? Expected to take <7 days a year off, no holidays, and including sick days?
I look back on my 4 day vacation and can only think how it cost me my grandfathers funeral.
P.S. he did accept my request so I could, but it was very obvious how much he disagreed.

Dabney Coleman (aka John Dutton II), ‘9 to 5’ Star Who Made a Career Out of Playing Jerks, Dies at 92
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/dabney-coleman-dead-9-to-5-mary-hartman-tootsie-1235902521/

The Texas native got laughs for his boorish behavior in 'Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman,' 'Tootsie,' 'Buffalo Bill' and much more.

by Mike Barnes MAY 17, 2024 2:27PM PDT
Dabney Coleman, the popular comic actor from 9 to 5, Tootsie and Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman whose many redeeming qualities including a knack for portraying characters who had none, has died. He was 92.
Coleman died Thursday at his home in Santa Monica, his daughter, singer Quincy Coleman, told The Hollywood Reporter.
“My father crafted his time here on Earth with a curious mind, a generous heart and a soul on fire with passion, desire and humor that tickled the funny bone of humanity,” she said. “As he lived, he moved through this final act of his life with elegance, excellence and mastery.
“A teacher, a hero and a king, Dabney Coleman is a gift and blessing in life and in death as his spirit will shine through his work, his loved ones and his legacy … eternally.”
The Emmy-winning actor also portrayed an irascible talk show host in upstate New York on NBC’s Buffalo Bill, but that critical favorite lasted just 26 episodes.
He had at least three other cracks at headlining his own sitcom, but ABC’s The Slap Maxwell Story, Fox’s Drexell’s Class and NBC’s Madman of the People never made it through their first seasons before being canceled.
More recently, the good-natured Coleman brought along his signature mustache to play Burton Fallin, the owner of a law firm and father of Simon Baker’s character, on the CBS drama The Guardian; was Atlantic City power broker Commodore Louis Kaestner on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire; and played John Dutton Sr. (the father of Kevin Costner’s character) on Yellowstone.
Audiences got an early taste of the Texan’s cantankerous charms in 1976 when Coleman appeared as the feisty Fernwood, Ohio, mayor Merle Jeeter on Norman Lear‘s late-night soap-opera satire, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.
In a 2012 interview with The A.V. Club, Coleman called that gig, which was supposed to last just six episodes, “the turning point in my career” and “probably the best thing I ever did.”
Jeeter “was just wonderful, just a once-in-a-lifetime character,” he said. “He was just the worst human being. … That’s kind of where it all started, as far as people’s belief that I could do comedy, particularly that negative, caustic, cynical kind of guy. I was pretty good at doing that.”
Coleman proved it again as the chauvinistic, backstabbing boss Franklin Hart Jr. in the workplace comedy 9 to 5, the 1980 cinematic paragon of women’s lib that starred Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and, in her movie debut, Dolly Parton. (For being such a rotten guy, Hart winds up getting hogtied by his secretary, Parton’s Doralee Rhodes.)
“All of ’em were well-established,” he said of his co-stars, “and here’s this guy coming off of Mary Hartman, which is not too shabby. (Laughs.) But it was late-night TV. Anyway, what I’m alluding to is that all three of them went out of their way to make me feel equal. There’s no other way to put it.”
Dabney Coleman and Dolly Parton in 1980’s ‘9 to 5.’ 0th Century Fox Film Corp./Courtesy Everett Collectionnone In Tootsie (1982), directed by his longtime friend and mentor Sydney Pollack, Coleman played the sexist TV director who’s dating an actress (Jessica Lange) on his soap opera, Southwest General.
Years earlier, Pollack had been his teacher at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York, and Coleman’s first three movies were Pollack’s first as a director as well.
Coleman also played the aptly named televangelist Marvin Fleece in the satire Pray TV (1980), the systems engineer overseeing the military mainframe WOPR in John Badham’s WarGames (1983) and the miserly banker Milburn Drysdale in the 1993 movie version of The Beverly Hillbillies.
Asked by Vulture in 2010 if he was proud to have helped make television “safe for jerky lead characters,” he replied: “It’s fun playing those roles. You get to do outlandish things, things that you want to do, probably, in real life, but you just don’t because you’re a civilized human being. There are no-holds-barred when you’re playing [jerks] — I couldn’t imagine anyone not loving playing those parts.”
Dabney Wharton Coleman was born on Jan. 3, 1932, in Austin, the youngest of four children. After his father died of pneumonia when he was 4, his mother raised the family in Corpus Christi, and Coleman became a nationally ranked junior tennis player.
He attended the Virginia Military Institute (many in his family did) for two years, served in the U.S. Army’s Special Services Division for two more and then, back in Austin, studied law at the University of Texas.
Mildred Pierce actor Zachary Scott, a family friend of Coleman’s first wife, Ann Harrell, convinced him that he could be an actor, so he left college a semester short of graduation and headed for Manhattan and Sanford Meisner’s Neighborhood Playhouse at age 26.
Coleman’s first onscreen speaking appearance came on a 1961 episode of Naked City — he earned $90 for that — and he and his second wife, actress Jean Hale (the Mad Hatter’s fetching moll on Batman), moved to Los Angeles in 1962.
Coleman appeared on such shows as Ben Casey, Dr. Kildare, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, The Outer Limits, Hazel, I Dream of Jeannie and The Fugitive before recurring as Marlo Thomas’ neighbor, the obstetrician Leon Bessemer, on the first season (1966-67) of That Girl.
He auditioned for Gilligan’s Island but lost the role of the Professor to Russell Johnson.
In 1963, Coleman had appeared on an episode of the ABC hospital drama Breaking Point that Pollack helmed, and the two would reunite for the movies The Slender Thread (1965), This Property Is Condemned (1966) — though his scenes were cut — and The Scalphunters (1968).
“The idea at that time, when I got out of school, was that I said, ‘I want to be in every movie you make,’ ” Coleman recalled. “He said, ‘OK,’ and we got off to a pretty good start.”
In Cinderella Liberty (1973), he worked with another former Neighborhood Playhouse cohort, James Caan, playing his commanding officer.
Around that time, the blue-eyed Coleman decided to grow a mustache, which he said turned around his career. “Without the mustache, I looked too much like Richard Nixon,” he told Vulture. “There’s no question that when I grew that, all of a sudden, everything changed.”
Producers told him that they would give him the part of Jeeter if he shaved the ‘stache, but he refused — and they hired him anyway. He played the mayor on 148 episodes of Mary Hartman as well as on the spinoffs Fernwood Tonight and Forever Fernwood.
On the Disney animated series Recess and its spinoffs, Coleman provided the grating voice of Principal Peter Prickly.
Working alongside Fonda on 9 to 5 led him to one of his rare non-boorish roles — as her dentist boyfriend in On Golden Pond (1981).
As a leading man, Coleman was hilarious in Short Time (1990), in which he played a police officer diagnosed with a terminal disease who learns his daughter can only collect his pension if he’s killed in the line of duty. His madcap determination to get himself offed, combined with his dismay at invariably winning commendations for “valor,” was memorable.
Coleman also portrayed an over-the-top oddball in How to Beat the High Co$t of Living (1980), a lisping pornographer in Dragnet (1987) and a slimy drag queen in Meet the Applegates (1990).
His voluminous credits include the films The Trouble With Girls (1969), Downhill Racer (1969), The Towering Inferno (1974), North Dallas Forty (1979), Melvin & Howard (1980), Modern Problems (1981), Young Doctors in Love (1982), Cloak & Dagger (1984), The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984), The Man With One Red Shoe (1985), There Goes the Neighborhood (1992), Amos & Andrew (1993), Clifford (1994), Devil’s Food (1996), You’ve Got Mail (1998), Inspector Gadget (1999), Stuart Little (1999), Moonlight Mile (2002), Domino (2005) and Rules Don’t Apply (2016).
Coleman won a supporting actor Emmy in 1987 for his work on the ABC telefilm Sworn to Silence and was nominated twice for playing Buffalo Bill Bittinger and once for his turn as old-school sportswriter Slap Maxwell.
When he wasn’t working, Coleman invariably could be found at Dan Tana’s in West Hollywood, where a hefty New York steak is named for him. “I presume it’s to do with the fact that I ordered the damned thing five times a week for about 15 years,” he said in his A.V. Club chat.
In addition to Quincy, survivors include his other children, Randy, Kelly and Meghan, and his grandchildren, Hale, Gabe, Luie, Kai and Coleman.
Duane Byrge contributed to this report.

2024.05.18 03:14 Few_Size592 Case Reopen

Hello everyone, I finished Invisalign Go and had my wires and put on and moulds made for my retainer about 3ish weeks ago. I got my first set of retainers about a week ago and they did not fit properly, so we made moulds and ordered some more and yesterday I picked up my second set. Got home and tried them on and guess what the second pair of retainers didn’t fit on my lower teeth and pop off whenever I bite down… I’ve noticed when flossing the back of my bottom teeth that it has recrowded. In particular on the left hand side, and when I put the retainers in you can see that there is space on the back teeth and it isn’t sitting flush because my teeth have moved inwards. I’m fairly young and paid for this all myself, my teeth have always been a big insecurity of mine and I really wanted it done right. Before I go talk to my dentist about it can anyone let me know if this is grounds for reopening the Invisalign case? There where a few other things I wasn’t super happy with just before finishing treatment, i was just gonna let it go but this is the icing on the cake and im thinking of saying something about fixing this. Just can’t afford to sink anymore money into a whole new invisalign treatment…

2024.05.17 16:39 Patient_Dingo_3890 Working as a psychologist in Germany

Quick General Context: I’m an international student currently studying psychology in a European country. I will be graduating with a master's degree in clinical psychology. My husband, who is a dentist, will be moving to Germany for further studies. I would like to know if there is a possibility for me to work as a clinical psychologist in Germany after graduating with my master's degree. Are there enough job opportunities within this field? I plan to undergo additional training and certification. I am also starting to learn German and aim to reach C1 or C2 proficiency. Additionally, I am fluent in four languages. Can someone provide more information about the field of psychology in Germany, job opportunities, and the possibility of working with a master's degree there? , I am also planning to do some training in the autism field. What are the opportunities and requirements in the autism field too? Thank you

2024.05.17 15:52 InternationalCitixen Book/web sites recomendations

Hey everyone, i graduated as a Dentist about a year and a half ago, as you know one must always keep learning, and so i like reading articles, on Scholar Google and online, however, id like to read books as well, from the top i guess, chapter by chapter, for instance books about Implantology, Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, but i dont wanna waste my time on the wrong books, id like your recomendations on books that contain information from the very beginning of the field, the very BEST books you can recommend
I also know that books themselves can get outdated rather quickly, hence why i study from articles, and i read from a page called Medical Express, on the Dentistry section, but in that webpage the articles, even tho very interesting, are scarse, so if you can also recommend webpages, or journals where i can find recent articles, thatd be great
Thank you for your time

Advice for dental graduate with zero experience
Hey, I’m an expat in Amsterdam and a dentist graduate that hasn’t practiced dentistry at all since graduation (almost 4 years ago). The final year of my degree was during Covid so practicing was not an option. That, coupled with intense anxiety and depression has completely drifted me away from this path. I’ve moved to Amsterdam last year with my partner and we plan on staying here for as long as possible (we are from another European country so visa isn’t an issue). However, in these 4 years I did try to venture into different career paths, but I always feel a lot of regret for not working in the field I’ve spent 6 years prepping for, and I end up bailing the new path. My biggest dream was (and still is I guess) being an Orthodontist.
Now, it feels like something impossible to achieve, I have to learn dutch, get a BIG registration and also practice after so many years of not doing literally nothing related to this. Besides that, most Orthodontics programs are very expensive and have limited seats.
I really want to get back to this, but I still suffer from anxiety and I am not sure where to start. If I would even know this is still possible I would take the first step by starting to learn Dutch. The thing that I am worried the most about is the fact that I have no experience whatsoever and I have forgotten a lot of concepts and theory, thus, I am trying to find a dentist that would appreciate someone in their office every once in a while, to learn and get back into practicing (I understand I could be working as an assistant for a while even if I don’t know Dutch, but I have to fact check this).
I am not sure how this can be achieved. As I’ve mentioned I still have a lot of anxiety so I don’t feel like I would be able to be there every single day or that I would even be capable of doing what is requested of me, but I will try my best to adapt and learn.
Any other tips that could help are welcome (please do not suggest therapy as I am already on the waiting list).
TL;DR Anxious dentistry graduate with no experience since graduation looking for a mentor / someone willing to help out getting back on track in this field.

2024.05.17 03:57 Holiday_Effort8329 6 Tips for writing your Grad School Admissions Essay

Hope they help!
1) You don’t have to write the personal statement; you get to.
Before you even sit down to write your essay, it’s important to have the right attitude.
Far too many students look at their grad school essay as an assignment rather than an opportunity. However, if the field you're pursuing is truly your passion, then why not be excited at the chance to talk about your journey? After all, it is always a privilege to share our story with others. The more freedom and enthusiasm you have while sharing yours, the better the final product will be, which brings me to the next point:
2) Stop writing your personal statement and start playing with it.
One of the main reasons applicants get stuck with the personal statement is because they approach it like they’re performing open heart surgery. “But it’s graduate school!” Yes, yes, I know, and I promise, there will be a time and place for polishing your masterpiece. However, in the beginning, you shouldn’t worry about writing a perfect essay, but rather, discovering a compelling story and, most importantly, an authentic and original way of telling it. And the only way to do that is to get your mind out of the classroom and into a playground—where all the magic happens.
Having spent a decade helping students write their admissions essays, I can tell you that the most profound insights always come from playful tinkering. One thing I recommend, in this regard, is to explore outside the realms of your field—especially for your opening paragraph, as you never want to start your essay on a generic foot. Understand that the application pool is filled with the same old stories floating around; one of the best ways to stand out is by organically connecting an unrelated topic or life experience to your career path.
3) Cut to the chase!
It doesn’t matter how creative or beautifully written your essay is, if it doesn’t get to the topic of the career field and your interest in it by the second paragraph, then it's a dud. Remember, your #1 job is to answer the question of why you want to become a physician, lawyer, dentist... etc. Do not try to impress the reader with your exceptional writing skills either. In fact, try not to think of it as “writing” at all; more like speaking. The personal statement is essentially your first interview, so be clear, concise, and to the point. Remember, in a pile of dense essays, an easy-to-digest story goes a long way—anytime you make the admissions officer’s job easier, it counts in your favor.
4) Never let your reader come to their own conclusion.
What’s wrong with the sentence below?
I spent two weeks working at Dr. Taylor’s office, observing a vast array of procedures, interacting with patients, and learning the ins and outs of a pediatric clinic.
Well, if I’m the admissions officer, the first thing I’m asking myself is: why did this student work for only two weeks? Did they get fired or something?
Whether there’s a perfectly good explanation at hand or you really did get fired, it’s imperative that you provide an answer that eliminates any possible negative assumptions your reader may have. Every sentence you write needs to be glossed over with this potential issue in mind; after all, the last thing you want to do is let your reader fill in your story for you.
5) Find your angle.
At the core of every successful personal statement is an authentic and original perspective. For instance, take medical school. There are a lot of students who write about their own health struggles; however, even with a generic topic like this, you can still stand out by discussing it from a unique angle that translates into medicine, your purpose, life… etc. Regardless of what your story is, your perspective will always be your greatest edge, because while some of us may have similar experiences, there will never be two people who see the world exactly the same. Use this beautiful fact to your advantage.
6) Start and end on a personal note.
Whether it’s an admissions essay or a speech, the only way to reach someone's heart is to speak from yours. By starting and ending on a personal note, you not only wrap your personal statement in a satisfying bow but also add a level of depth and meaning that will leave a lasting impression on whoever is reading your essay. Be mindful of not only your words but the emotions each phrase conveys. The best thing you can do, especially in the conclusion, is to evoke a powerful feeling in your reader. Why? Because, as the late Maya Angelou famously said, a person will never forget how you made them feel.

2024.05.17 02:47 karenvideoeditor Saying Goodbye

Going into a career where you’ve got a fair chance of being ostracized probably isn’t what my parents had in mind when they paid for me to get a bachelor’s in magical theory. I know when I graduated and told them I was going into necromancy, they looked like they were sucking on a lemon. But they knew me well enough to know I was smart enough to do things the right way, and stubborn enough not to let societal taboos stand in my way.
Every time I have a job, I’m reminded of why I do this. Sure, many of my gigs are helping farmers whose crops are dying, the law doesn’t have anything to say on that kind of work, and that pays a good amount of my bills. But the ones who need a few minutes (all the law allows) to say goodbye, who lost someone in the blink of an eye, who are burdened with the pain of their heart being torn out of their chest, those people have nowhere else to turn. Well, they technically do, and that’s therapy. But being allowed a goodbye is a good start.
Though there are the occasional clients who sneak past my interview process just to interrogate the deceased about an affair or some such nonsense. Those are irritating.
Much of my day is spent at home, tending to the garden that grows the plants needed for my spells, which I brew myself. It was winter now, though, so I was in my workshop, making use of my harvest, dried and ground up, to mix together and enchant the potions. Occasionally I get walk-ins though, and so when the doorbell rang that morning, it didn’t quite catch me off guard.
The boy at the door did, though. His name was Harvey, and he lived a few doors down. And he was in floods of tears that were only now tapering off.
“What’s wrong?” I cried, crouching to his height. “Harvey, what happened?”
“It’s Sage,” he whimpered. “She-She died.”
“Oh, honey,” I breathed. “I’m so sorry.” The boy’s dog was part of their family, adopted as a puppy. I recall her being seven or eight years old now, and especially for a boy of eleven years old, that was a tragedy. The words sunk in then. “Did you…did your family want to hire me?” He nodded. “What happened? How did she die?”
“She got spooked and ran off last night during the thunderstorm,” he said quietly. “We couldn’t find her. She came back this morning and something had…attacked her. A coyote, maybe. She barely made it back home before…” Tears glistened in her eyes. “When we went outside to look for her, she was on the porch, and she was already gone.”
“Okay,” I said. Without another word, I grabbed my purse and coat and shut the door behind me, following the boy to his house.
Out in the backyard, his parents sat tiredly in two patio chairs, looking worse for the wear and in mid-conversation. They were surprised by my appearance, and both rose to their feet. “Caroline! What are you-” Patricia’s face went slack with comprehension as she set eyes on her son. “Harvey went to fetch you. Are you sure you want to-”
“I’ve done this kind of work before,” I assured her. She just nodded slowly, and she and her husband Brian sat back down, taking her husband’s hand. Walking over to the dog, it wasn’t quite as gruesome a sight as I’d worried it would be, the attack just leaving blood caked on the left side of her neck. I also saw some on her paws; she’d put up enough of a fight to get away. To get home.
Kneeling down in the grass, crackling under my knees, the blades still stiff from the overnight chill, I took two potions from my purse. One of each that I always kept on hand for emergencies. The first was a syringe and I injected it into the dog’s neck, an anesthetic so the dog wouldn’t awaken in pain, charmed to supernaturally spread through the body since the heart wasn’t beating. I poured the second potion on my hands before rubbing them together, reciting the incantation under my breath, and laid my hands on the dog’s body, feeling the power slide through them and getting to work immediately.
A minute or so later, the dog’s weary eyes opened as her chest started to rise and fall and her gaze slid around until they caught on Harvey’s eyes. He burst into quiet tears again, sitting down and pulling the dog’s head onto his leg, stroking her gently. “Hey girl,” he whispered. “I’m here. You’re safe, you made it home. I’m here, Sage.”
The dog blinked up at him, tired from her struggles, but her tail thumped against the ground regardless, a slow, regular metronome. She shut her eyes at the scratches behind her ears and the kiss he gave her on her head. “You’re a strong girl,” he murmured. “Good girl. And I’m here. You don’t have to go alone. We’re all here.”
I brushed away tears from my eyes before they could fall, letting the boy comfort the dog in her last moments, letting him lean his forehead against hers, breathing in her scent. Then eventually, the dog’s breathing slowed, her tail lost its strength and rested against the ground and, as Harvey stroked the smooth hair on her head, she drifted away once again.

2024.05.17 02:04 Overall-Chip8692 AITAH for refusing to pay for my sisters food and not wanting her to eat the groceries I buy?

I’m not sure where to begin. A lot of things over the last 10+ years have built up to lead to where I am today and I am so sorry for the rant but I feel it’s background information that will help to understand the situation. I (27f) am the oldest of 4 siblings, I have a sister (25) and two brothers (21 and 18).
A little background information, when my sister was around 16 through a series of unfortunate events we found out she had been brainwashed by extremists - for two years organisations and various people tried to help her, counsel her and provide resources to help her turn her life around. During these years she ran away many times (we only officially reported her as missing 3 times), twice she ended up in foster care. Unfortunately things did not improve much after she came home as ultimately weeks after her 18th birthday she was arrested and spent 4.5 years in prison I believe. During this time me and my parents and siblings visited her weekly prior to Covid (as visits were stopped for quite a while). I often bought her clothes, shoes etc to deliver to prison for her and we sent her a lot of money so she could order additional food and snacks and phone credit - as she used to spend hours calling home. I think for the last 6-9ish months of her sentence I would drive my mum there and back (it was like 1.5 hours each way plus traffic) but wouldn’t go in as we would just end up fighting and I was always blamed for any disagreement or anything. When she came home everything was okay for a couple days but she started to cause a lot of arguments between me and my parents so I stopped speaking to her altogether within about 7-10 days of her return (during this period I had two tickets for her and I to go to a concert together that she had requested I buy for her and did try to ask my mum if she was still planning to attend and my mum told me I was being a bitch and making her life hell by causing too many problems so she would not be attending with me and I can use the tickets as I please- this was the day of the concert (a Punjabi concert) and I had no friends who could attend on such short notice) and have only had a period where I spoke to her again which was her first Christmas/new years at home since her release which was emotionally manipulated by mum. I didn’t want to speak to her but I was guilt tripped so I bought her gifts to keep the peace and she bought both brothers a hoodie and had nothing for me (which is no issue because I didn’t really expect anything) but she gave me £50 because she felt bad but when I got fed up of her trying to sabotage everything and started speaking to her less she swore at me and cussed me out in front of my parents and siblings and my mums friend and daughter and I saw this coming the second she gave me the money (I had refused to take it but she and my mum insisted so I did take it and put it aside) she demanded it back so I gave it back to her (she did not return any of the things I had given her which totalled £350+) and have not spoken to her since unless it’s to threaten calling the police as she often causes a lot of domestic disturbance.
Since her return I have had to call the police multiple times but they are honestly useless - the only time they tried to help was when she hit me and tried to smash my phone and strangle me and they just asked if I wanted to press charges and my parents told me not to - and I don’t want to make her life worse - I also have a background in law and know this would not have amounted to anything as I didn’t really have any noticeable/serious injuries.
She always goes out of her way to demand things such as my Netflix and Disney+ and my parents allow her (even before all this she was always a difficult child growing up - she would throw tantrums or ignore everything until my parents gave in to her demands) when I first stopped speaking to her she would still cause a lot of problems for me about my expenditure (I have predominantly worked since I was 16/17 and handle most of my expenses - my dad pays for my sim only contract and my parents do not charge rent or utilities but I sometimes buy a few groceries), I eventually had enough and said I wouldn’t pay for my streaming services and allow her to use them and continue to verbally abuse me. Everyone gave me a lot of shit for it by calling me a snobby, selfish, arrogant, entitled bitch who was a dictator to put it nicely - her, my parents and siblings and relatives and family friends (my mum always rants to everyone and presents things in a way that you take her side). I did think I was in the wrong because of how many people gave me a hard time about it but I just felt it was unfair of my to have to pay for these things and her use them whilst making my life difficult- my mum did offer to give me £5 towards the cost and I did refuse because I thought it would be more peaceful to not have to deal with this. After a few weeks when they realised I wouldn’t budge my mum manipulated my brother into buying these subscriptions and telling him my sister would reimburse him for the costs and he did offer to let me use them for free but that I would have no say in anything and I said thank you but continued to use my accounts as he gave me an earful about how he was being fair and I was dictator bitch. After 6-8 months he asked if he could go back to using my accounts and I said yes and he then told me he cancelled his subscriptions as my sister had not given him any money and was causing arguments for him between our parents and him. I felt bad for him because he was the closest to her and he is my mums favourite and he did say he brought it up to my mum and she brushed it off. Eventually the same issues I went through because of my sister my brothers faced and they ultimately stopped speaking to her too.
I have since then completely stopped speaking to her. She does go out of her way to make life difficult- I do hybrid working so the days I’m in the office she’ll wait until I get home to use the bathroom and I’ll have to wait over an hour to shower, the days I’m working from home she’ll come back from work and make calls on speakerphone or watch tiktoks on full volume (she does this all the time now irregardless of time or day) she will always divert attention from my parents when we have a birthday or any event (graduations or any achievements). Often we can’t have conversations with our parents because she’ll barge in and demand they have a conversation with her and if they don’t she will start screaming and shouting and throwing things and smashing doors - the police have been called out multiple times and in a few instances neighbours and people walking past the house have called the police.
We can’t sit in the same car as her and travel anywhere as she will either speak top volume or have a screaming/crying fit for attention the entire way. It ruins our day and gives us headaches that last days.
Since this year has started money has been really tight. Before my parents would manage all bills and expenditure but my dad has gotten really lazy and does not work the hours he used to (he’s self employed) and the burden has heavily fallen on my mum who is struggling so I have had to step up and help her. I don’t mind helping her but I’ve am struggling and have not saved anything since the start of this year. It is also worth mentioning that I commute to a different city for work where I need to pay for diesel, parking and a clean air zone charge - so half my salary goes towards that and the remainder is used to pay off 2 credit cards and help my mum. I am 27 years old and I feel extremely embarrassed that I have no savings and I’m struggling so much - but I work full time and can’t pick up an extra job and any overtime I work at my current job is not paid because they tell us not to work overtime but I have to so that the work gets done. My team has downsized from 5 people to 2 and I’m covering the work of 2 offices and now potentially a third - every time someone leaves or changes roles I absorb their responsibilities so that the team (me and one other guy who does god knows what 85% of the time) can keep functioning. I am trying to be financially more responsible but it’s difficult when there is birthdays or Christmas - because I’ve somehow set a precedent of buying my immediate family expensive things (during everything with my sister I could afford to make these big purchases to sort of please everyone) and now everyone expects it - I have tried to say that I don’t want to do it anymore and have refused but everyone guilt trips me and manipulates me and I genuinely feel bad. But for the last two birthdays and the last Christmas if not more I have not received anything - I pay for my own cake and have had to both times give my sister a piece - I feel bad so I do give in but at the same time when she celebrates her birthday she tells my mum for us to sit in our rooms so we don’t ruin it for her but then for our birthdays she’ll deliberately insert herself whilst acting oblivious to the fact that it’s our birthday. I can’t refuse to help out with groceries or bills because why are we meant to do - not eat or not shower or not have car insurance, or not drive to work? And the more slack I pick up the lazier my dad seems to be getting. I did try to make some small cuts like removing my brother who recently passed his test from my car insurance and I was guilt tripped into keep him on and currently I am paying for both mine and my mums car insurances - it’s a multi car policy so they can only take payment at one time from one account and that is my bank account.
This whole year I have been helping my mum with groceries, car insurance and diesel and a tiny bit towards bills. I feel like k keep making sacrifices but no one else is expected to - like it’s perfectly fine for my siblings to take 2+hour showers everyday even if it means I can’t take one or I have to wait hours to brush my teeth.
Last week we had family visiting from USA and had to drop one of them off in another city, I have spent considerable money on filling up mums car with diesel and it was always the plan me and my brother would go with my mum to drop my great uncle off. Unfortunately my mum decided to wait for my sister to get home to say goodbye and she wanted to go also and as enthusiastic as she was I knew it was a bad idea. She would be okay on the way there but on the way back she would either scream at the top of her lungs because she is incapable of being considerate and speaking in a normal tone or she would find the silliest reason to have an argument or she would have a crying meltdown. My mum as always asked me and my brother and I had to explain that last time there were 5 people in her car it was a bit cramped and my mum blamed me and said she couldn’t go - even though my brother also said no and when my sister was out of earshot I did say I don’t mind her going as long as there wouldn’t be a problem but my brother flat out said no. She started swearing at us and then stormed off and didn’t say goodbye to our great uncle who was a bit upset by this. We went and dropped him off and my mum did say to her before leaving that they both could go another day (she has often demanded my mum and her take trips on a day off to visit family and me and my brothers are not allowed to go and my mum tells us we’re not allowed to go because she has demanded this) but my sister refused saying she didn’t want to go which just reinforced the fact that she only wanted to tag along to ruin the day for me and my brother.
Today me and my mum went to Costco and a grocery store and I paid for everything as she is still waiting on money to be deposited into her account and she picked up things for my sister. I have made it known that I do not like paying for things for her - I don’t speak to her - I don’t look at her face and I don’t expect anything from anyone. Like I’m struggling and I’m trying to keep my shit together and be financially responsible. She refuses to spend any money - she works two jobs and is saving to buy a house so anytime she wants takeaway she’ll make my parents pay or wait until me and my brothers are getting something and demand my mum take food from us when we get home to give to her or to buy her stuff also. I have refused buying her takeaway such as McDonald’s and usually my mum pays for her meal meanwhile I pay for myself and my brothers and my mums meal. I honestly don’t remember the last time I ate a takeaway I didn’t pay for - I know it’s a silly thing to get upset over but my dad often buys takeaway for him and all three of my siblings (I’m a vegetarian and fussy eater but they all eat meat) so I don’t make much of it but it doesn’t occasionally get to me. I am on the heavier side so anytime I buy takeaway for me I do get shamed about it so I do try to eat at odd times by myself so I don’t really have meals often with anyone else. I don’t know why but today just hearing my mum tell my sister she got her stuff from Costco etc I just got really annoyed. I tried so hard to stay calm and let it go because I know I have no choice but it was just eating away at me. Like why is she allowed to save her money but I’m paying for her items and she then has to comment on how much money I wasted on other groceries simply because she isn’t going to eat them?
I guess I was feeling wound up from the whole incident with dropping off the relative - everyone again made me feel like the bad guy - my dad called me a selfish bitch and dictator and I said okay but can you explain why and he just said to ask my mum. I was eating my dinner and my mum asked if I would go with her to a store tomorrow to buy some freezer items and I thought it would be okay for me to speak to her about how I was feeling but when I started to speak I just started crying and she got angry at me and asked why I always had to be so selfish and I asked away whilst I was trying to speak to her. I did try to stop crying but I haven’t been able to stop for over 2 hours.
This year has been incredibly tough - we lost a lot of family members at the start of the year and I have been in a very deep depression. I have been in depression for most of my life but it’s been worse since everything with my sister began and especially since she’s been home and even worse this year (if that was even possible). I have been so chronically stressed and depressed since she has been back that I have added like 30kg and I struggle to sleep and am always ill or injured (sometimes migraines, flu, tonsils etc).
I know some people will say I’m holding her criminal history against her due to working in law and being snobby but that’s not the case. I stuck up for her - I wrote a letter so she would get a reduced sentence - I genuinely thought she understood she made a series of bad decisions and she wanted to turn her life around. But during lockdown it came out she got involved with even more bad people and I realised she was a lost cause and I was fighting a losing battle. She’s gonna ruin her life but I don’t need to ruin any more of mine. I spent my entire youth trying to be there for my family and support them and especially her and I never expected or wanted any award or acknowledgement I just wanted my family to make it out okay. But I know that won’t happen. Because of her everyone in the wider family stopped speaking to us.
I don’t get how whenever there is anything wrong I’m always the bad guy. Even a broken clock is right twice a day but I’ve never had any sort of support or acknowledgement or validation about my feelings.
Even yesterday my brother was arguing with me - he was kicked out of school and I had to plead with them to let him back in to finish his final year as my parents were too focused on my sister to notice he wasn’t attending school so this year I’m strict about him attending because it’s my name and reputation on the line and he missed a few days due to being lazy. And during this discussion he knocked my MacBook onto the floor and my parents were too busy having a conversation with my sister to have noticed the argument between me and my brother (we were sat right next to them) and they immediately start shouting at me for dropping it and when I explained what happened they didn’t really say anything my dad just called my brother an asshole and my brother just laughed it off.
I feel so tired and depressed. I honestly envy the people who die every single day. Some days are better than others because I know if I just control my expenditure for 6 months I can be debt free and save and move out and I see the light at the end of the tunnel but other days I wish I would just die already. Living should not be this difficult. Every single day I wake up and I am so disappointed I am still here. I am grateful to be alive I know not everyone is this lucky - so many people have so many plans they are unable to follow through on but I can’t help but I feel like this.
I can’t even speak to anyone. I cut off the couple friends I did have as I knew they were disingenuous people and they were more jealous of me and thought of me as a pity case - someone they could use for gossip and entertainment as there is always something going on in my life. I can’t speak to any family members, I can’t speak to my brothers because they’re young and they don’t understand and my parents don’t want to know. I tried to have a conversation with my mum but by crying and having a mental breakdown I pissed her off and she walked away from me - it’s not the first time this has happened and I’m not sure why i forgot this would happen and thought I could speak to her. I should have just kept my mouth shut and then I wouldn’t be crying or writing this.
I have definitely left out a lot of details hoping no one will recognise my family because that is the last thing I want but please let me know if there is anything I can provide further info on.
I don’t know - am I the asshole for being so petty and not wanting to pay for items she wants or will eat or by trying to say I don’t want her to eat the things I pay for and if she wants them she can go buy them herself?
P.s I would just like to say I don’t hate my brothers or hold anything against them - I’m grateful for all of this to have brought me closer to them - but I just can’t help but feel I always get the short end of the stick in every situation. And I genuinely just do not know if I am an asshole.

2024.05.17 02:03 Friend4Us Currently on TPS, what are my options for permanent residency?

Hello! I am a Ukrainian immigrant who has fled years ago when the war first started in 2022 (my city was first to be hit) so I went to the US under temporary protected status and currently live with my grandmother. In Ukraine I had just graduated from dentistry school with a Physician Stomatologist degree (which is what is needed to be a Dentist) and was in the middle of my "clinical experience" when I left, and since being in the US I had to find temporary work in a hospital as a Patient care tech. Also since I left, I have made many connections both with coworkers, friends, and significant others and I now wish to pursue permanent residency/citizenship in the US, how can I go about this?
  1. I thought about working for an H1B visa since I would be considered a "skilled worker." To practice I have to get licensed (I am currently studying for this) and attend a 2 year transition program on top of degree evaluation by the ECE. (source: https://www.in.gov/pla/professions/dentistry-home/dentistry-licensing-information/#Dentist_by_Unaccredited_College). Also it takes 2 years so I would need to apply for a student visa first I guess.
  2. if I go to apply for a student visa (F-1 I think it would be) and then 2 year programs, they require me to show proof of financial responsibility (Internationally Trained Dentist Program Financial Aid University of Michigan (umich.edu)), but I don't have enough money/my grandma can't and won't foot the >$80.000/year bill (no sponsorship). This is all made easier if I had a H1B visa which I can convert to a permanent residency (green card) later on, so I can apply for loans via FAFSA. Having a Green Card will also increase my chances of being accepted to this 2 year program for some reason (I can't find the source but I feel like I read that somewhere, but that's besides the financial point). Ultimately, I need a lot of money or a green card to take out federal loans.
  3. that takes me back to looking for an H1B visa via a different route. I'm currently looking for jobs in healthcare that provide H1B that I can utilize my degree (or even just a general science/lab tech jobs, anything at all) but it seems most H1Bs are related to technology industry.
So I feel kind of stuck and stressed out because I don't understand everything about immigration processes but I want to be a dentist here and move on with my life. I don’t want to consider marriage as an option just yet, even if it is the easier and quickest option. Does anyone have any recommendations? Am I missing something or did I get something wrong? Is there another way I am not considering when I should be?
Thank you

2024.05.17 01:41 RIP-Lefty How early is too early to begin the job search

I just began my fourth year of dental school and am currently preparing to email a few practices to set up shadowing opportunities. I am not going into these experiences expecting job offers, simply the connections and experience of seeing how a practice is supposed to run as well as what can be expected of a new dentist.
However in the search for shadowing opportunities, I was reminded of the Henry Schein recruiter for my area that offers the service of get me in contact with practices looking to hire.
As a D4 planning to graduate May 2025, is it too early to reach out and start making those connections? I cant imagine that anyone I am connected with via Schein is interested in waiting over a year before bringing a new grad in. What would be the best way to get myself out there and when should I begin? I have seen a few new grads post some desperate sounding LinkedIn posts looking for work and I want to do whatever I can to mitigate myself being in that position.

Grad bear cake
Made this graduation bear cake for my cooking class’s end of the year cake wars. Could’ve been a bit better, but ended up taking 4th place.
