2024.05.18 23:38 discogran Tom Scavo must die

Late season 7 and Tom and Lynette are fighting once he’s go his big career break. I literally cannot listen to more than 2 words that come out of his mouth because 1 more and I’m at risk of imploding. I hate him more than I hated Joffrey in GoT - and that’s saying a lot considering we’re comparing a suburban dad to a murderous wretched evil king - both little boys though so the comparison works!

Jesus Loves You - Generations of Love (Land of Oz 12” Mix) [1990]
Mainly from early to mid ’90s Boy George used Jesus Loves You as an alias for more dance oriented material.
Land of Oz again was a title which Paul Oakenfold used in many of his remixes especially in the early 90s. This same version of the track is named as Oakenfold mix on the Jesus Loves You album, The Martyr Mantras.

2024.05.18 23:35 oofio65 Billy corgan copypasta

THIS WAS ACTUALLY WRITTEN BY HIM ON HIS BLOG.
The first time I ever witness nakedness on a woman is with my step-mother: my brother and I are fighting downstairs, while my father and my step-mother are up in their bedroom…as is it the early afternoon, the general rule as always is to stay quiet during the day, to not wake my father…things get out of hand between us, and the next thing I know she is screaming my name and holy hell from the top of the stairs…her hair is sticking out all over the place like a dandelion, she is still in her underwear, wearing some sort of loose t-shirt…unbeknownst to her, her left breast is hanging out of the top of her shirt, swinging down towards me as she screams…
Two doors down from our duplex lives a family with 2 kids roughly the same age as my brother and I…they are very nice people, so we spend a lot of time hanging out at their place, eating their food, with the mom serving as our occasional babysitter…the older child, the one my age, is a cute tomboy who is rambunctious and outgoing, playing football and baseball with us boys…my brother is not competitive like I am and doesn’t like sports, so it is good to have a close friend who likes to play games even if she is a girl…it is not unusual that her and I are left alone in their house or our house to play, as we are fairly mature kids by most standards…one night, left alone to our own devices, she asks me if I want to play a game…always up for a competition, I ask her what game she would like to play…she tells me she wants to play doctor, and when I ask her what the rules are, she explains in a vague way that I am the doctor and she will be the patient…not fully understanding her point, I agree anyway…she takes me behind the bar in the basement where it is very dark, and lays down on the cold floor…she tells me that she is ready now to be examined, so I innocently pretend to check her heart with an imaginary stethoscope, and take the pulse from her wrist…she seems fairly restless, so I ask her what is wrong…she doesn’t say anything in return, so I just continue to play along, asking her the kinds of questions doctors ask me; “does your stomach hurt? are you sleeping ok?”…I find this game kind of stupid, but I am intrigued by why we are playing this game in the near dark…she asks me if I want to check her some more, and I say ok…still laying on the floor, she pulls down her pants to her knees, exposing her hairless vagina…I have never seen a vagina before, and I just stare at it, shocked at the difference between her and I in this particular area…my head starts to buzz, as I am overwhelmed by the strange sensation of arousal…she just lays there, not moving, and I am not sure what I am supposed to do, or what she wants me to do…I feel ashamed with the overwhelming feeling that I am doing something wrong, even though no one has ever explained anything to me that would remotely indicate this as wrong…she wants me to touch her, and when I don’t, she suddenly pulls her pants back up and says “ok, now it’s your turn”…I am so freaked out by all of this that I tell her I am bored now and that I don’t want to play anymore…it is also on this same night that she explains to me very carefully, and in great detail, that there isn’t such a thing as Santa Claus…

2024.05.18 23:17 backwardshatmoment To my first PC colony and my favorite in almost 2000 hours: Farewell.

I got my PC with 1100 something hours into Rimworld on my PS5. Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve played the greatest colony of all time. It was like Christmas seeing all the awesome things I’ve missed out on with console. I’ve never finished a game. I get too attached, so I play them until I eventually get tired of the game. This time, it was different. I began my story with a sanguophage start.
A PC noob, I didn’t pay attention and didn’t realize that just clicking on a colonist wasn’t choosing to crash with them. I was overwhelmed and accidentally landed with the best pair I could’ve asked for.
19 year old Imp turned vampire, Grump. Kind, beautiful, and iron-willed. Mega. Fucking. Chad. 19 year old human, Onesan, too smart, industrious, and steadfast. How did I get so lucky?? I swear, it was entirely accidental. In fact, when I saw their names, I was pissed because I meant to choose someone else. I have no idea how I failed upward, but I did. I don’t even know how I got them because I hadn’t even registered them in the choices before landing.
Within two days, Grump and Onesan became lovers. Together, they began digging a mountain base that would soon become a cannibal holy Mecca and kickstart a chain of events that had never been experienced in all of my Rim history: I let them leave.
In the ten years this colony trudged onward, Grump and Onesan, power couple sent straight from the gods, welcomed several newcomers to their home and to their faith.
My favorite newcomer, and the third addition to the colony, crash-landed Yttakin, Wyn’barrot was most instrumental in the colony’s survival. She trained a pack of cougars, panthers, and elephants and kept the colony alive with her hunting expertise, claiming the life of every wild elephant that dare step foot on our tile with her animal sidekicks in tow.
How remiss I would be to not mention Madam, the pregnant refugee who begged for shelter and never left. She gave birth to a son named Lucky, the first child in our colony, and if there ever was a chosen one, he was it. The boy’s growth moments were accompanied by the perfect trait choices. He was pretty, steadfast, and sanguine. A man who put Chris Kyle to shame with his trusty sniper rifle.
Grump and Onesan went on to have four children, one of which had an (illegitimate) child with golden boy Lucky, blessing them with grandbabies as well.
Wyn’barrot and her genie husband, Sale, who dreamt of melee combat, but was genetically cursed to live behind a fabrication bench for his entire life, had a few children of their own. We even managed to capture Wyn’barrot’s sister, Ro, during a raid and she became a full fledged member of the colony herself, hunting and handling at her sister’s side.
There are many others who contributed greatly to the colony’s success. Pinachite, the mole person doctor and miner, whom without our sprawling base would never have been as grand as it was. Sky, Madam’s husband, whose abrasive personality started many a social fight, but melee skill saved many a life. Flo, the ancient doctor, who killed Madam’s second son and only with Sky, but paid her blood debt by delivering her grandchild and subsequently saving the baby from a particularly nasty case of malaria. Ittark, the Yttakin with a penchant for plants, whose sowing skills kept the meals lavish and plentiful.
After many adventures, many hard raids, moments of wanting to rage quit, I managed to load them all up into the ship, and for the first time in my history of playing, I loved them so much, I let them go.

2024.05.18 23:01 russianadidasdoge Yall fuck with this song

Let tyrants shake their iron rod, And Slav'ry clank her galling chains, We fear them not, we trust in god. New England's God forever reigns.
Howe and Burgoyne and Clinton) too, With Prescot and Cornwallis join'd, Together plot our Overthrow, In one Infernal league combin'd.
When God inspir'd us for the fight, Their ranks were broke, their lines were forc'd, Their ships were Shatter'd in our sight, Or swiftly driven from our Coast.
The Foe comes on with haughty Stride; Our troops advance with martial noise, Their Vet'rans flee before our Youth, And Gen'rals yield to beardless Boys.
What grateful Off'ring shall we bring? What shall we render to the Lord? Loud Halleluiahs let us Sing, And praise his name on ev'ry Chord.

2024.05.18 23:00 snail_that_ran_away I remember the video but couldn't figure out the title or lyrics of the song, please help me find!

The video was something with a teenage boy on a boat, I am not sure if there was a friend. They fight. One takes the boat and goes away. It was shown that the boat reaches a waterfall and he falls down.. but he is dreaming or unconscious, he falls in the crowd cheering for him. The song ends with the other friend pulling him out of ths water and saves him. If anyone can figure it out please suggest! One of my friend used to like this song a lot, but i can't figure it out. It might be around 6-8 years old pop song.

2024.05.18 22:59 TheHarryPotterGeek Episode 2: A World Revealed

The trio stood in awe, their eyes wide with amazement as they took in the bustling magical world around them. People flew through the air on broomsticks, and animated conversations about dragons filled the air. Shops sold wands, potions, and magical creatures. The vibrant, bustling atmosphere was unlike anything they had ever seen.
Lily Everwood: "This... this can't be real. How is any of this possible?"
Toby Fletcher: "I don't like this, guys. This is too much. What if we're dreaming?"
Fin Sparks: "Calm down, both of you. Look around! We need to figure out where we are and what this place is."
As they continued to explore, Fin noticed a moving newspaper underfoot. He picked it up, and the images on the front page moved, showing scenes of magical events. Lily and Toby freaked out, but Fin kept his cool, trying to calm them.
Fin Sparks: "Look, everything here is different, but we have to stay calm. Let's see if we can find someone who can explain all this."
They noticed a group of people listening to a guide, so they sneaked closer to join them. The guide was explaining the basics of the magical world, including the currency, customs, and places.
Tour Guide: "Welcome to Diagon Alley, the heart of the magical world! Here you'll find shops for wands, potion ingredients, and everything a witch or wizard needs. And of course, the currency here is Galleons, Sickles, and Knuts."
As the guide spoke, Fin's attention drifted to a boy in the distance who looked oddly familiar. Before he could get a closer look, the boy vanished from sight. Fin rejoined his friends just as the guide started talking about Hogwarts.
Tour Guide: "Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is one of the finest magical schools in the world. It has four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. And yes, we must not forget about the dark times brought by Voldemort, who still poses a threat to our world."
Suddenly, they spotted someone familiar—Sanjay, a boy from their neighborhood. Sanjay saw them, and his eyes widened in shock. He grabbed Fin's hand and hurried them into a secluded alley, with Lily and Toby close behind.
Sanjay: "What the heck are you doing here, Fin? This place is dangerous if you don't know your way around!"
Fin Sparks: "Sanjay, we saw this stranger who gave us a bag, and then... we ended up here. We don't even know how it happened!"
Sanjay sighed, realizing the seriousness of the situation. He looked around nervously before addressing them.
Sanjay: "Okay, listen carefully. This is the magical world. It's hidden from Muggles—non-magical people like us. How did you end up here without knowing about it?"
Lily, curious as ever, opened the small pouch they had received from the stranger. The pouch suddenly disappeared in a puff of smoke, causing all four of them to jump back in surprise.
Lily Everwood: "What just happened? Where did it go?"
Sanjay: "Calm down. That was a portkey, a magical object used for transportation. The fact that you ended up here means... you're probably wizards or witches."
Fin's eyes sparkled with excitement as he realized what Sanjay was saying. Lily and Toby exchanged glances, still processing everything.
Sanjay: "Only a magical person can enter this world without knowing it or without proper guidance. That means you three have magic in you."
Lily Everwood: "This is incredible... but also confusing. What are we supposed to do now?"
Fin Sparks: "If we're here, it means we belong. We have to explore this world and learn more about it."
Sanjay then mentioned Voldemort and Harry Potter, sparking Fin's curiosity.
Fin Sparks: "How do we get rid of Voldemort? Is there a way?"
Sanjay: "The only person who can truly defeat Voldemort is Harry Potter. He's the one who has faced him and survived multiple times."
All Three (Fin, Lily, Toby): "Who?"
Sanjay explained the history of Voldemort and Harry Potter, detailing their legendary battles and the hope Harry represented for the magical world. He also mentioned that students who are late bloomers can be accepted into Hogwarts in their fifth year, which was around their age.
Sanjay: "You guys are fifteen, right? That means you could start at Hogwarts in your fifth year. If you're interested, I can teach you some basic magic to get you ready."
Lily's face lit up with excitement, but she was still torn between the two worlds.
Lily Everwood: "This sounds amazing, but... is it the right thing to do? Should we leave our world behind?"
Fin Sparks: "If we're not wizards, we wouldn't be here. This is our chance to find out who we really are."
After a serious discussion lasting 15-30 minutes, where they weighed their options and expressed their fears and hopes, all three finally agreed.
Lily Everwood: "Alright. Let's do this. Let's learn magic."
Toby Fletcher: "Yeah, let's give it a shot. This might be the adventure of a lifetime."
Fin Sparks: "We're in this together. Let's find out what being wizards really means."
As they made their decision, the trio felt a mix of excitement and apprehension, ready to embark on a new journey into the unknown.
Sanjay's Explanation: "Alright, let me break it down for you. The magical world has been hidden from Muggles—non-magical people like us—for centuries. We have our own schools, governments, and societies. Hogwarts is one of the best schools for young witches and wizards. Each house there has its own unique qualities: Gryffindor for the brave, Hufflepuff for the loyal, Ravenclaw for the wise, and Slytherin for the ambitious.
"Voldemort is a dark wizard who terrorized our world. Harry Potter is the boy who lived, the one who survived an attack by Voldemort as a baby. He's been fighting against him ever since. Our world is full of magic and danger, and it's not something to be taken lightly. But if you truly are wizards, you have a place here, and you can learn to harness your magic."
Fin listened intently, feeling a sense of purpose he had never felt before. This was his chance to understand the strange occurrences in his life and to belong to a world he never knew existed.
Lily Everwood: "I always knew there was something special about you, Fin. Maybe this is where we're meant to be."
Toby Fletcher: "Yeah, and if we're going to do this, we'll do it together. Like we always have."
With their minds made up, the trio braced themselves for the adventures that lay ahead. They knew it wouldn't be easy, but with Sanjay's guidance and their newfound determination, they felt ready to face whatever challenges the magical world had in store.
End of Episode 2

2024.05.18 22:58 Kleptosteomaniac The boys are fighting

So the one darkling beetle I got turned into a colony very quickly, and I've been having issues with two of my males fighting. Fridge is the main culprit here, I've noticed he's like, more dominant than the rest of the males, and one of the things he does aside from mount every single female he comes across is bully Nuclear Bomb, he'll chase him incessantly around the enclosure, biting him, and all poor Nuclear Bomb can do is run away.
I noticed this started a few days ago, but Fridge hasn't stopped so I have to be checking in all day to break the fights and today when I opened the lid I found Nuclear Bomb hanging upside down from the top of the critter keeper. He's not letting him eat so I have to take Nuclear Bomb out of the enclosure to feed him separately, and Fridge chases him out of the little cave shelter I built for them. I haven't seen him do this to any other male, and he doesn't fight with the girls either.
I think I'll just end up housing him separately. Any ideas as to why Fridge despises Nuclear Bomb so much?

2024.05.18 22:50 saltyblueberry25 Tinfoil master thesis on DFV meme-story

This is my in-depth notes while watching the full length dfv meme video compilation by roaring pika this morning.
https://x.com/roaringpika/status/1791834694704591155?s=46
It’s an hour long and way easier to understand all together like this.
These notes come from watching every ppshow this week and taking my favorite bits of tinfoil from the community into one fairly simple look into the story dfv is telling us without getting too deep on possible tinfoil, it’s just laid out plain and simple here.
Tldr; this is a very long post. I think it starts with dfv’s final yolo update (fine I’ll do it myself) and how he’s been feeling for the first 30 minutes of the memes and then in the last half it switches to, fine I’ll do it again and then full of straight confirmation foil that we’ve been right about the bear trap, bbby, Teddy, and baby all along. Then he says we’re all good, be zen and says goodbye for now.
Here goes:
Fine I’ll do it myself, Cat heartbeat, Wolverine mad. (I think this marks his Final yolo update and of course doubled as the hype to start this week off with a bang.)
I think the first half of the movies are all about the first squeeze and how he was both dfv and kitty, how they were talking trash about him, how we found out about the baskets “you move I move” the battle scenes were all about price action up and down, everything was green and red, and the running memes are about the stock running up and sad memes are when the stock goes down.
About 30 minutes in someone asks, “where you been”, he says “waiting”, what about getting caught? “All part of the plan.”
Then there’s usual suspects movie with the goofy meme “I’ll fuckin do it again”.
——
Then Jake texting Keith, is this about our Jake with bbby and the story pp had about the gay bar at the first pulte event? So funny with the guy with 600 memes and basically joking that he became a full blown psycho.
Tell me where the freaks at pump up music. Psyched on us after the meet up?
Guy looks out the window, then the Teddy in a chair (might have just been a response to Cramer being a smartass). Then Hank (Jim Carrey) starts to lose it as the stock price keeps going down, his alter ego comes out.
Truman show, he’s trying to escape, they say “he’ll turn back he’s too afraid”. They hit him with everything they’ve got but he knows it’s all fake. He says, “is that the best you can do??”
Fury is a game where every boss fight feels like the final boss. They taunt you, they demand you get back in your prison cell, they pound you into a pulp and they even make you doubt the righteousness of your own quest towards freedom. But the soundtrack man, it keeps egging you on. To whoop some ass! PP theme music.
The Bullet one talking about time, cause and effect, “don’t try to understand it, just feel it”. “Instinct, got it.”
Morpheus teaching neo it’s all fake. Just before that scene he says, “you think that’s air you’re breathing?” … “Again!”
Alice says “But I don’t want to go among mad people.” The cat replies, “Most everyone’s mad here. You may have noticed I’m not all there myself.” Neo waking up again in the 4th movie.
Alice going down a rabbit hole into wonderland.. psychedelic music and dancing.
Next scene guy running and falls over, music says “I lost myself.”
Shawshank, they find the tunnel he made. In 2021 Kitty escaped prison. All they found of him was some Reddit posts, tweets, and an old live stream. Investing is the study of pressure and time. That’s all it takes really, pressure and time. That and a keen goddamn activist.
A man will do anything to keep his mind busy in prison. Turns out kittys favorite activity was handing out memes, a handful at a time (the dirt for the tunnel). Kitty did as he was told, buffed that financial education to a high mirror shine. (I think he’s been getting ready for something big and these memes are just a countdown.)
Bruce Willis. No, THIS is the Kansas City shuffle. (An advanced form of confidence trick where the mark is aware of being involved in a swindle and believes that he or she can outsmart the swindler; however, this is all part of the trick, and by attempting to retaliate, the mark unwittingly assists the con artist.) Hedge funds are the mark and dfv/rc are playing a con, the bear trap?
Pay attention to what I say, I choose my words carefully and I never repeat myself. The cat looks at the camera.
Michael from the office - It’s Britney bitch. And I am back. Cut to Britney Spears - I must confess I still believe. When I’m not with you I lose my mind. Give me a sign (like how we’re always asking for a sign?? (with the alien g from signs all red like a gme logo giving birth). Hit me BABY one more time!
Goosebumps all the papers fly out of the briefcase right when we get like 200 new dockets clawing back money from 90 days before bbby bk. Bear beware… you’re in for a scare…
Then it’s Abbi from Broad city dancing all over the place and she’s obsessed with bed bath and beyond in the show. There’s also the scene where the other girl is dancing behind a colored blanket with the same logo as HBC and then the next scene she’s tied up. Then they’re dancing again.. and naked then then only in shorts. Naked shorts?
We’ll never survive unless we’re a little crazy. The modern investor unleashes the animal within to take on the big city - that’s gotta be us apes?
What kind of person are you? The kind that sees signs, sees miracles? Or do you believe that people just get lucky? Is it possible that there are no coincidences? The kid holds up a baby monitor. They find a crop circle and it’s two GameStop logos turned in different directions (maybe rc turned GameStop around) and then another one with a long line and a baby gme logo (is gme about to have a baby?!)
Why make something disposable like an investment thesis when you can make something that lasts forever, like a GameStop meme? (It says “Reality” at the bottom of this clip, lol)
Jack Nicholson in the shining (music playing it’s just a matter of time before I lose my mind it’s also a place in ready player one where they have to take the leap not taken, the leap of faith, a kiss). “Make a lot of memes today?” Lol
Can’t stop what’s coming. Kicks some ass.
I got both hands off the wheel, the cops are coming. I listen to the music with no fear, you can hear it too if you’re sincere. Cuz I’m a punk rocker yes I am. (song: punkrocker by the teddybears)
Rock ain’t about doing things prefect! Who can tell me what it’s really about? Sticking it to the man! If you wanna rock, you gotta break the rules.
Two cars racing, one plays chicken with a truck and then cut to bojack horseman talking on stage right before they almost crash (stalking horse? Looks just like he horse from 1, 2 switch that GameStop tweeted the minute the stalking horse deadline was up.)
Now you may only see a pile of boring forms and numbers, but I see a story (us going through the dd and maybe holly etlin talking about there’s a story here but it’s not mine to tell)
Listen to this song, it’ll change your life.
(Song is don’t fear the reaper - so don’t be afraid of death, funny because of the cowbell, maybe cowbell is involved in the tinfoil but at the end of the song lyrics not shown in the clip they say: don't be afraid, Come on, baby (and she had no fear) And she ran to him (then they started to fly) They looked backward and said goodbye)
Big Lebowski dude is investigating and finds the drawing of Jackie tree horn and it’s just a guy with a raging erection with the name cohen at the top of the paper. (I think this means rc is ready to fuck)
Jason borne is telling the run Lola run chick he can’t run with her, he has to be careful because people are after him. He says I gotta figure it out. She says well then figure it out. They drive into a parking garage through the wrong way (where it should say exit it says exit strategy and he enters through the exit, parks and walks away, as in “what’s an exit strategy”)
Then it looks like maybe him and rc just waiting and dealing with some bs.
Then there’s the Backstage roaring cat perhaps. The girl says ima stick beside him.
Not sure about everyone shooting each other but someone said maybe because he wrote it and manifested it?
Then the dress one “this is art, get it?” Was apparently two minutes after hey Ross and some others were talking about that dress on a space call.
I’m a United States gamestop memer. Aren’t those the guys that go crazy and come back with an arsenal of memes and blast everybody? Sometimes. Price action keeps coming and coming… and then it’s GameStop earnings week! (6/5 aftermarket)
Always sunny scene maybe like a peek into how crazy he’s been feeling not being able to talk to anyone for three years?
He can’t speak or he’ll get in trouble.
Alladin scene (alladin name of trading algo. He also says next time I’ll use a nom de plume - pen name) all I gotta do is jump! (The theme of taking a leap of faith again)
Dreyfus billionaire family (no idea but she’s dancing having a great time)
You can’t handle the truth (code red has to do with a worm/virus, maybe they’re about to unleash something that destroys several companies that are short? And it’s pretty funny)
Beavis and butthead sex for dummies (to me it says rc and dfv are ready to fuck but also cex means centralized exchanges which are also for dummies)
Oceans 11, (theme is a heist. We’re all looking at each other like what’s about to happen and then the last guy is just looking at boobs, seems to describe a group like us lol)
Bernard from westworld can’t see the bear thesis (because in the movie he’s programmed not to but irl it’s because there isn’t a thesis!)
“That’s not a thesis,” pulls out huge knife, “that’s a thesis.”
The gme galaxy on the cat collar says deepfuckingvalue so I think he’s saying it’s still deep value and we often made memes about the black hole of gme absorbing the rest of the market into it so maybe that’s it.
Whats in the box? What’s in the box??? (What’s the plan??? RC not telegraphing his plans)
Guy looks at all the memes - she asks “is it not good?” “It is miraculous.” (That’s us loving every second of this. Thank you dfv.)
And so.. you just RAN. Forest gump runnin’ (gme gonna just keep runnin’)
you go backwards but then you go forwards again… you go backwards… then he walks out of the woods.. (are we out of the woods now? Done going backwards?)
We’ll see. The Zen philosophy story - kid breaks leg, oh that’s bad, can’t go to war, oh now it’s good etc - (I think he’s saying to be zen, we’re gonna win, but this message goes deeper:
We don’t always know what is good or bad. Breaking your leg isn’t good or bad, those are just judgements in our mind. We don’t know what the future holds. Almost anything can be a good thing or a bad thing, all we can do is accept life and how things play out without judgement.)
We’ll see.
Then the boy is saying bye to ET, the music says I’ve really enjoyed my stay, but I must be movin on. (DFV going silent again until this all plays out.)
He’s saying “we fuckin won fellas! Be zen, and we’ll see this all play out soon enough.”
I think the heavy use of good movies and music and video games may also be hinting at gamestops nft marketplace May reopen to sell those 3 things as NFTs by partnering with blockbuster and some musicians.
LFG 🚀 I’ll see you regards on the moon.

2024.05.18 22:49 Lost-Initiative-3844 Trial run with rescue didn’t work out… I feel awful

Last week me and my husband discussed doing a trial run with a dog from the local shelter to see how he’d do in our home, with our current Pup, Blue. Blues been my best friend since the day I got him and I owe my life to him. He’s my other half.
Blue is 5 years old, he’s been an only dog his whole life, and he’s a people dog. He’s never shown much interest in other dogs. Not mean or aggressive to them, but also not overly excited to play with them.
We took blues personality into consideration and since this dog is the same breed we thought maybe we’d give it a shot and see how it goes. Me and my husband sat down and talked and said if it was too much for blue, too much for the new rescue, or the first signs of aggression or territorial behavior shows, the shelter will take him back. Which is exactly what this trial run is for.
The first three days were fine. The two dogs have been playing, I was actually really surprised blue was as interested in the new rescue as he was.
This dog needed a lot of training which we were willing to put in. He needed a lot of attention and is a very jealous dog so that was something we needed to work on as well.
Last night, the two dogs got into a bit of a fight. My dog blue was playing with his toy, laying down, relaxed and the rescue had ran up to take it from him, and blue had snapped and started a fight. Blue doesn’t show any signs of aggression EVER. He is the sweetest boy and is not a resource guarder what so ever. He’s never shown this behavior to any human or dog before.
Neither got hurt and the fight was separated immediately - And I instantly told my husband it wasn’t going to work. Seeing my dog blue in that manor broke my heart - and seeing this new dog who just wanted to play get snapped at and scared from my dog made me even more upset.
I told my husband I was going to call the shelter tomorrow and ask to end the trial run early as I just don’t think it’s a right fit for Blues personality. That one fight made me so scared for this other dogs safety and comfortability in our home, that I couldn’t have it happen again. We separated the dogs for the night, and called the shelter today.
The shelter was able to take the dog back, however they treated me and my husband like awful people for it. Which broke me. I wanted to give this dog a home to feel safe and secure in and I couldn’t provide that for him. But I’m not going to make my dog change his personality to fit a dog that may do better in another home. This behavior he showed wasn’t okay obviously and will be watched for more signs like it in the future, but I’m not going to force Blue to like other dogs in a way we need him to for this to work. They made me feel like my dog was a bad dog for just simply wanting to be an only dog. They said “dog fights are normal in new house holds” which didn’t seem right to me…
The new dog went back to the shelter, which works with a prison and the inmates (non violent and approved inmates of course) are actually able to take care of the dogs and play with them until they’re able to find a home for the dogs. This gave me some peace of mind knowing he wouldn’t just be shoved in a kennel waiting for somebody else to give him the chance.
My husband however is now upset with me. He thinks I over reacted about one little dog fight and that I needed to give the dog another chance. I just don’t think I had it in my heart to see either dog in the situation they were in last night. It’s not fair to either of them.
I feel like the bad guy now, Like I gave up too quick, like I failed this dog, and like I did something wrong for wanting him to go to another home and returning him to the shelter. But it also makes me feel like my dog is a bad guy, like he’s a bad dog for showing this behavior.
Some word of advice would be greatly appreciated. I feel like I did something absolutely awful, but I know if I kept this dog, the outcome could’ve made me feel 10x worse with the chance of something happening.

2024.05.18 22:47 S4ltL1F3 Panthers’ Season (Ik, I’m crazy)

So I’ve seen a lot of discussion on our team. People comment “four wins is something to be happy with” or “can we win six?” I thought I’d throw out my OVERLY optimistic thoughts here. Feel free to send me packing (or POUNDING?).
Format: ##/## (win chance): team in favor - general thoughts: #-# (record)
Breakdown: Week 1: Sept. 8 at New Orleans - 60/40: Saints - I think this is still a winnable game, and I would love to have this, but Carr over Young. 0-1
Week 2: Sept 15 vs. Los Angeles Chargers - 60/40: Chargers - Herbert is better than Young and Harbaugh is an established coach. I think that skews the odds against us, but I just like this game. It’s our first home game under “the alignment.” I like our chances. We steal it. 1-1
Week 3: Sept 22 at Las Vegas - 50/50: Two Second year QBs. Two new coaches. AOC vs BY. I’ll take BY (Still taking BY over Minshew). 2-1
Week 4: Sept. 29 vs. Cincinnati - really? take the L. 2-2
Week 5: Oct. 6 at Chicago - 55/45: Bears. They have more overall talent, but I think this win “means” more for us so we sneak it out anyway (yes chances are in their favor). 3-2
Week 6: Oct. 13 vs. Atlanta - 55/45: Falcons - but we are home and the hate runs deep! Steal another dub. 4-2
Week 7: Oct. 20 at Washington - 60/40: Commanders - Luvu and Chinn gonna mess up BY. SORRY. (Also Jayden Daniels is leading the RoY race at this point with CW in second. MHJ 3d, mini Mac in 4th, and Brooks & XL tied for 5th). 4-3
Week 8: Oct. 27 at Denver - 50/50: HoF head coach but… Wilson? Stidham? Nix? KEEP POUNDING. 5-3
Week 9: Nov. 3 vs. New Orleans - 50/50: REVENGE from week one 6-3
Week 10: Nov. 10 vs. N.Y. Giants (Munich, Germany) - 80/20: Panthers - I mean. Woody from Toy Story is their QB? They lost Barkley? 7-3
Week 11: Nov. 17 BYE - Media and prediction analysts are losing their minds saying “we knew all along the panthers would be here.” Or “they had the 3d weakest Strength of Schedule, it’s gonna fall apart.
Week 12: Nov. 24 vs. Kansas City - 100/0: Chiefs - WE HAVE NO SHOT. Everyone knows it. Why bother? What’s that??? T-Swift couldn’t make it?? Doesn’t matter either way, we’re fighting for something at this point and take the upset. 8-3 (OT win)
Week 13: Dec. 1 vs. Tampa Bay - 50/50: Bucs revenge for us stealing their staff? They know our scheme? Doesn’t matter. We’re on fire now baby! 9-3
Week 14: Dec 8 at Philadelphia - 90/10: Eagles - ever run full speed into a brick wall? Yea… it “Hurts”. 9-4
Week 15: Dec: 15 vs. Dallas - 80/20: Boys - damn. We’re skidding now. 9-5
Week 16: Dec. 22 vs. Arizona - 50/50: Can we recover? It’s toss up, who comes down with it, XL or MHJ? Going bold here. 9-5-1
Week 17: Dec. 29 at Tampa Bay - 60/40: Bucs - they gonna fight to keep us out. 9-6-1
Week 18: Jan. 4 or 5 at Atlanta* - 60/40: Falcons - Final nail in the coffin? Probably. 9-7-1
Is that enough to get us in? Idk. I’d have to run through the other NFC South schedules, but we’d likely be in some crazy wild card scheme where if the Packers tie, the Bucs win, and the Rams lose, we’re in.

2024.05.18 22:46 Lost-Initiative-3844 Trial Run with rescue didn’t work out… I feel awful

2024.05.18 22:44 DaisyandBella Why Colin feels like has to put on a facade

I think the show has done a good job of including multiple moments throughout the seasons that show why Colin feels like he had to develop the facade that he does. It goes back to season 1 when Anthony chastises him for proposing to Marina and says he should’ve taken him to brothels. And then Anthony is proven right. Colin is made to be a fool. In season 2, he gets told by Marina that he’s a boy stuck in his own delusions and he needs to wake up. And you have little moments too like him not being able to keep up with his brothers when it comes to holding his liquor, and Benedict’s advice is to just drink more. Anthony and Benedict have both been kind of crappy brothers to him in this regard (not discounting that both of them have their own issues to deal with).
And then this season, he is told at the first ball by one of the lords that he’s much more fun than he was before. He gets the message that the way he was before wasn’t desirable. And in the one moment where his true feelings come out and he tells his peers that he thinks love and sex are something that should be valued, he gets laughed at. There are just so many instances of Colin being mocked for being his sensitive self. That’s why Violet’s speech is such a cathartic moment. He’s finally given permission by one of the people who loves him most to be his true self and fight for what he actually wants.

2024.05.18 22:42 CharmingStock7907 Vaguely Territorial Male Cat

Hi there! Breed: American Shorthair (cat) (mutt, not a recognized pedigreed cat) Age: 5 yrs Sex: Male, Neutered as soon as he was old enough Weight: 17 lbs (chunky boy, he's on a diet)
Problem: We have another cat in the house (female, 12yrs, spayed, has been in the home since before he was acquired) that he tries to fight practically every time they interact. Specifically, he tries to chase her whenever she wants away from him, and he tries to bite her neck and ears. This latter only happens when she's sitting upright and watching him - they coexist peacefully whenever she's napping or otherwise can't be bothered with his presence.
Is there anything that can be done to help ease his aggression? Are there treats, training tricks, should we take time to re-introduce them as if he was a kitten? This is more of a behavioral check-in rather than a diagnosis or seeking specifically medical advice.

2024.05.18 22:42 JustDiscoveredSex Opinion These torchlit young marchers helped to save American democracy

(Copypasta from the Washington Post that I thought the group might find interesting.)
They called themselves the Wide Awakes. They are a lesson in building a political movement.
Opinion by Jon Grinspan May 14, 2024 at 5:30 a.m. CT Washington Post Jon Grinspan is curator of political history at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History and author of “Wide Awake: The Forgotten Force that Elected Lincoln and Spurred the Civil War.”
They called themselves the Wide Awakes: one of America’s largest, weirdest and most consequential political organizations, now nearly forgotten. In Boston, many had escaped slavery. In St. Louis, many were radical German immigrants. In D.C., their rallies mixed Yankee federal clerks with sons of Southern families. In Connecticut, where they got started, they were working-class kids with shady political backstories. And in 1860, this diverse coalition of young Americans drew the line against slavery and help to elect Abraham Lincoln.
Their success can tell us a lot about cobbling together a coalition in a fractured, tribal, distrustful age.Clad in militaristic black capes, marching by torchlight through America’s cities, the Wide Awakes alarmed the Southern aristocracy of enslavers — which was exactly what they hoped to do. The movement drew its mammoth size and unnerving force from the resentment many Americans felt toward “Slave Power”: the wealthy planters who pushed to expand slavery and brutally suppressed opposition.
Started by a few kids barely old enough to vote in February 1860, the Wide Awakes were believed to be half a million strong by August of that year, with companies from Maine to California, Virginia to Kansas.
To understand how shocking this coalition was, we need to rethink the politics of antebellum America.
Instead of a nation split between the absolutes of Slavery and Freedom, most Americans fell somewhere on a spectrum between the two. Just 2 percent of the population in 1860 actually enslaved anyone, and those Americans trapped in slavery made up another 12 percent of the nation’s men, women and children. That left 86 percent of Americans who were neither enslavers nor enslaved. Some enthusiastically supported slavery, while others prayed for the practice to end. But most — especially among the large northern majority — found slavery distasteful while also objecting to what they saw as the radicalism of Abolition.
Caught in the middle, this majority bounced from party to party, explaining much of the tumult of mid-19th-century politics. Enslavers skillfully exploited the unsettled situation and spent the 1850s demanding more slave states, the right to keep enslaved people even in free states, the prohibition of speech and writing against slavery, and a requirement that free states assist in hunting fugitives.
This outsize influence was backed by real and threatened violence, from the plains of Kansas to the halls of Congress. “I have no objection to the liberty of speech,” sneered Alexander Stephens, the future vice president of the Confederacy, so long as “the liberty of the cudgel is free to combat it.”
The moderate majority began to feel as though slavery was at war with democracy, trampling upon their own rights along with the rights of the enslaved. Young people decided they’d had enough.
A gawky 19-year-old textile clerk, Edgar Yergason, started it all. “Fastidious” about his clothes, Eddie prepared for a torch-lit rally of the anti-slavery Republican Party on Feb. 25, 1860, by fashioning a shiny black cape to protect his new coat from dripping torch-oil. Yergason’s fellow clerks made capes, too. This oddly uniformed corps led a march through Hartford that night, while their friends beat back a mob of proslavery Democrats. Proud of their costumes and their fighting skills, Eddie’s friends met in a dingy third-floor apartment to formalize their association. After selecting a brawny 27-year-old leader for their “captain,” they cast about for a name. One fellow shouted: “Why not name it ‘Republican Wide Awakes?’” It was time that they wake up to the threat slavery posed to democracy.Their “army” of young civilians — clerks and farm boys and apprentice blacksmiths — spread from coast to coast. Uniting in “companies” drilled by “captains,” young people joined together, energized by this militaristic sense of awakening. In an age of rowdy, boozy politics, the Wide Awakes stood out for their stoic, silent midnight marches, not exactly fun but stirring and spectacular. In an age of chaos, their discipline sent a political message.
Wide Awake companies fought as bodyguards for Republican anti-slavery speakers, escorting Lincoln and many others. Bloodied young men, still in their signature capes and caps, sat onstage at rallies as proof of the antidemocratic forces aligned against them.
This anger joined strange bedfellows. Before 1860, teetotaling Yankee abolitionists disliked beer-drinking German radicals, who hated Know Nothing gang members, who shunned African American fugitives, who distrusted antislavery Southerners. But a shared enmity toward the Slave Power united them all, what historian Henry Adams later called “the systemic organization of hatreds” at the root of politics. Lewis Hayden, who had escaped slavery in Kentucky, led a company of Black Wide Awakes in Boston in the same movement as the nastily racist Frank Blair Jr. in St. Louis. Some Wide Awakes were truly admirable, others quite distasteful, but all were united under Yergason’s cape design.
The Wide Awakes claimed to have “no warlike intentions,” but Democrats were skeptical. In the North, Democratic newspapers legitimately worried that “politico-military” clubs would mean “our elections will become pitched battles.” Across the South, panicked newspapers spread wild, violent rumors. One ex-governor told Virginians that they would soon be “cut to pieces by the Wide Awakes.”
On Election Day, club members woke up communities with 5 a.m. fireworks, then marched to the polls. Turnout was high: 81 percent. By the end of the day, Lincoln had won an unusual victory, taking nearly 60 percent of the electoral vote but less than 40 percent of the popular vote in a four-way race. This awkward mandate meant that for all the Republicans talk of “majority rule,” no one could really bring unity, or even basic agreement, in such a fractured land. But the Wide Awakes lit Lincoln’s plurality with torchlight, until the movement’s shadow loomed larger than the actual Republican Party.
Many agreed with the New York Tribune’s assessment that the Wide Awakes were “the most imposing, influential and potent political organization, which ever existed in this country.”
As the nation spiraled toward the Civil War, Wide Awake clubs armed as paramilitary forces, who did some of the first fighting in the conflict. And their members enlisted in huge numbers in the Union Army that finally killed slavery.
Today, progressive activists online sometimes name-check the Wide Awakes, styling them as woke heroes from the past. But they were really something more complex — and more thrilling: a genuine coalition of people who couldn’t agree on much but who marched side-by-side against the greatest threat to democracy.

2024.05.18 22:20 PlumeyTail Physician, heal thyself..

Physician, heal thyself..
This took place in 1990 when I was 18 and still living at home with my parents and siblings in a quiet suburb outside of Philadelphia. I had graduated high school and was about to start courses at the local community college.

I was working part-time as a cashier at a local grocery store and had been since my sophomore year of high school. When you work in retail, particularly a grocery store, you often get to know the regular customers and become sort of familiar with their personalities. But all these years later there is only one family that I still remember clear as day, and I know that I’ll probably never forget them.

I was pretty shy and typically would greet my customers with some pleasantries and then engage in ringing up their groceries, not paying much attention to anything but the task at hand. But when this one particular family of three entered the store, I would always find myself watching their every move, not because they were threatening or suspicious, but because of the strange dynamics and air of mystery that seemed to surround them. The family consisted of an Indian father and his two children, a boy and a girl who appeared to be in their pre-teen years. The man was quite tall and had a quiet, elegant air about him. He almost never spoke to any of the store employees, except for maybe a quiet “thank you” when his groceries had been totaled and the transaction was over. His son was equally quiet and I don’t recall ever hearing him utter a single word, even to his father.

What kept everyone’s attention including mine riveted to this family every time they came in was the daughter. She appeared to be around 11 or 12, was almost as tall as her father, and was extremely overweight for a girl of her age. She always appeared disheveled in stained, mismatched clothing, and her shoulder length hair was usually an uncombed mess. Her eyes had a wild, unfocused look to them. She usually had candy or a half-eaten pastry in her hand that she had taken from the shelves that her father always handed over to the cashier to be included in his grocery total. Whatever it was she was eating at the time was always equally smeared on her face and clothing.

Where her father and brother were unusually quiet and reserved, this girl was like the proverbial bull in a china shop. She would literally run up and down the aisles of the store singing and shouting unintelligible songs and phrases while she grabbed at items and frequently knocked over displays, generally leaving a retailer’s nightmare of a mess in her wake. Other customers would stare in horror as she ran amok and shouted random words at people. Her father and brother would trail meekly behind, quietly picking up or straightening the merchandise she had displaced. It fascinated me to watch them because the father never reprimanded or tried very hard to restrain her from this behavior, and I often wondered why there was never a mother figure along with them. I always felt sorry for this man as he silently trailed his wild, out-of-control daughter around the store with an air of quiet shame and resignation. It would usually take him an hour or more to navigate the aisles and collect his needed groceries while simultaneously performing damage control as he went. The boy always stuck to his father’s side, never saying a word or showing any signs of surprise or horror at his sister’s disruptive behavior.
For 2 or 3 years I routinely observed this little family of three on a weekly basis, and one day in the summer of 1990 it occurred to me that I hadn’t seen them for a few weeks. That day in the breakroom I overheard another cashier mentioning their relief that this man and his 2 children had not appeared for a while, and to my utter shock a different employee asked this person if he or she had not heard the “news” about them. This got my full attention and I asked what had happened. The answer was so unexpected and shocking I actually felt physically ill after hearing it.

This man, our regular, quiet customer and father of two, had made national news. He was Dr. A. Paul, a highly regarded doctor of oncology at a local cancer research and treatment center. He, his wife and 2 children lived in a beautiful 10-bedroom mansion in a very affluent part of town. On a hot Monday in July, he left notes for his workplace superiors before returning home for the day. When these notes were eventually discovered the police were called and the doctor’s house was forcefully entered. What the police discovered was horrific and unimaginable.

Upon returning home from work that day, Dr. Paul had put sedatives in his unsuspecting wife and children’s food. The police found the 2 children and their mother slumped against the wall in an upstairs bedroom, dead from intravenous lines in their veins that hung from picture hooks on the walls. The doctor himself was found lying dead on the bed, though I can’t recall if he was hooked up to an IV or not. In his notes to his colleagues, he had explained that his financial difficulties, his wife’s health problems, and his daughter’s retardation were all too much for him to bear, and that he didn’t want to leave his son as an orphan, so he took their lives along with his in order to end the hopelessness.

To say that we were all shocked is an understatement. For years this man and his children had been our regular customers, and I felt such shame that we had all openly gawked and secretly snickered at this poor, dysfunctional family. Looking back, I wish I had smiled at them more, and maybe attempted a little small talk with the father whenever they came through my line at the register. I know it wouldn’t have changed the outcome, but a little friendliness and empathy from a stranger certainly wouldn’t have hurt this man. Dr. Paul, wherever you are now, please know that, though the world has moved on and your tragic end is old news, there are still a few of us that remember and still think of you and your family. May all of you rest in peace.

It’s simple — almost overly so — yet it is beloved by so many seasoned and experienced gamers.
What I got curious about after playing the game myself and reading a number of pseudo-reviews online was how exactly it achieved this.
How did a package so entry-level-looking garner such respect by 201 and 301 students?
--
The ‘Fields’ region is a great example of Kena’s dichotomy.
It’s gorgeous and inviting, with sea-foamed vistas, lush landscape and rushing waterways. There’s a even a big, lovable pet bull towering over the myriad of cute little Rot dudes scampering through the foliage. The whole place is just friendly.
Why then, does it end up being one of the game’s longest, deepest and most complex sections? Consider its many scattered puzzles, which ask you to combine platforming, archery, environmental awareness and combat proficiency. There’s even a handful of red herring platforms that you can’t properly interact with until later in your puzzle solving endeavor.
The ‘Fields’ are a microcosm of the game as a whole. A childish, Pixar-esque shell which, when uncovered, reveals a complex, involved gameplay experience underneath.
Kena: Bridge of Spirits invites you to be a kid, but treats you like an adult. This is something very few games manage — or even attempt — and it’s what makes Kena so unique, memorable and special.
--
Kena crushes its tone and aesthetic on all fronts to create something that’s desirable and attainable to a group outside of hardcore gamers.
Kena’s visuals are youthful and welcoming by using cartoonish and fairytale-esque art design. The game’s companions do the same — the Rot are your constant brigade of adorable little plush-like, Pikimin-esque comrades who hop as you walk, munch on berries, clumsily trip over each other, and squeak in pitches that can only described as ‘cute.’ You can even give them little hats to wear. They’re pets and it’s all so mired in youthful innocence that I cringe even typing it.
From a distance, Kena appears childish and immature based on its outward appearance. That is, until you peel back its outer layer.
--
The game looks like something your five-year-old might enjoying toying with on your iPad, “you-got-games-on-yo-phone?” style. But there are four elements in its building blocks that make it a game not optimized for your five-year-old on their own;
  1. Narrative
  2. Puzzles
  3. Platforming
  4. Combat
Narrative
As far as the game’s story is concerned, it may begin bright and innocent enough, but it deals not-abstractly with death and loss.
Consider that all three boys you meet in the early game — Taro, Benni and Saiya are actually dead, I-see-dead-people style. Consider also that Kena’s entire journey revolves around the loss of her own father and her desire to reconnect with him.
Additionally, it is Toshi’s selfishness and his desire to be the hero that actually ends up bringing death and destruction to his village when he jumps the gun and kills and the mountain spirit in cold blood.
Merciless affronts on nature and an up-front dealing with death and grief are not exactly for the young of age, despite their youthful packaging.
Puzzles
It would be a waste of word count to explain in detail the steps necessary to complete certain puzzles in Kena just as a set of examples to prove the point.
If you’ve played or watched gameplay, you know the puzzles are surprisingly involved, consisting often of multiple steps to complete that build on each other and require the use of all of your abilities in tandem.
One of the bigger “ah-hah” moments I recall was when I realized I could order my Rot minions to move objects while Kena stood on top of said object in order to give me a leg up to jump to a previously unreachable ledge.
Platforming
Speaking of ledges, jumping to and from them is tight and precise in Kena.
Platforming challenges are often timed (your aura-bomb weapon only activates platforms for specifically-timed bursts). Combining their scheduled nature with the need to rotate them via precise archery, mid-air grappling segments and more makes for a movement experience that is involved enough to demand the player’s full attention for every tick of the clock.
Kena and her world’s gravity also have a decided, predictable weight to them that’s not exactly forgiving, meaning the act of jumping to and fro is exact while also requiring exactness.
Combat
Fighting the enemies of Kena is similarly involved.
The cadence with which the game throws opponents your way combined with the complexities of dealing meaningful damage to said opponents creates a combat scenario which demands the player fluidly wield and swap between both melee and ranged options while carefully managing space on the battlefield.
Kamikaze-style enemies often rush Kena in carefully-spaced and well-timed waves, while enemies with shields and shells hide their weak points from visibility. Enemies like this require certain sequences to beat — be it a well-placed bomb and arrow combo, a parry, or a maneuvering to an enemy’s backside.
Boss encounters lean into these mechanics but also present new wrinkles — The Hunter fight asks the player to rethink their tactics and find a way to deal with an airborne opponent who is apt at dodging bombs and arrows, for example.
The final few bosses ask you to take everything you’ve learned throughout your journey and apply it all at once, and if you don’t… it’s defeat for Kena.
--
The above sounds like I’m describing a souls-like with platforming elements as the ‘fresh take’ in addition to the enrapturing combat.
Games that provide this much of a challenging, involved experience are typically darker in tone — be it music, environment, or what-have-you. I don’t think too many people would call Kena ‘hard,’ but these are the same people who died 10+ times to The Hunter or Corrupted Toshi.
If this game had a darker, moodier skin, would more people describe it as hard or not for the faint of heart?
In this way, Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
It is accessible to new players and younger gamers due to its pleasing and friendly atmosphere. But by its conclusion, it is likely to season them into better gamers. If a newbie gamer picks up Kena, they’re in for a surprise and (hopefully) delight when they find something deeper than that which they first expected.
On the other hand, Kena is a worthwhile experience for veteran gamers if they drop their toxic masculinity and play a goofy kids game with a female protagonist. This is a game that will undoubtedly earn their respect by requiring their attention, precision and commitment throughout its experience. Like the newbie gamers, gaming veterans are in for a surprise and (certainly) delight when they find something deeper than that which they first expected.
--
Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a good experience for everyone. By balancing being adorable with being difficult, it earns the respect and appreciation of everyone who plays it. Its accessibility makes it easy to recommend to anyone and the game thus earns itself a bigger audience as a result.
Its narrative and gameplay might not separate themselves in terms of newness from a saturated market, but the surprise and delight the game provides delivers an experience to its players that isn’t typical of the space.
By striking the balance between wolf and sheep, Kena elevates its quality to something beyond just the content within.
--
and yet
I can’t help but think, as I summarize this article, that if a game is for everyone, doesn’t that, on some level, mean it is also for no one?
I mean, when you look at the game’s narrative or gameplay, it’s not exactly reinventing the wheel here. In fact, Kena does just about nothing new. It spits out the same exact version of a game we’ve been playing for decades in the form of Tomb Raider or Uncharted or The Legend of Zelda or God of War.
Critically speaking, both the gameplay and narrative are pretty damn milquetoast.
You’re in a world infected by some arbitrary Darkness and since you’re Special and The Chosen One™ it’s your job to go around cleansing the world of evil using a combination of environmental platforming, lever and pressure plate puzzle-solving and lock-on-based, sword-swinging driven combat.
It wouldn’t be difficult to make the argument that Kena is bland.
But the discourse around the game just isn’t about that.
The game’s scored an 81 on Metacritic and has a 92% positive review rating on Steam at time of writing. It recouped its development costs in just one month, meaning every sale since then is hitting the bottom line.
People like this game.
Quick aside from me here on something that made me smile — when double-checking the score on Steam for the above info, I found these as the first two reviews at the very top of the queue: “yo wtf. bought this game to chill, why does it feels like im playing souls-like difficulty ass game HAHAHAH.” “Don’t be fooled by the graphics. This game can be a challenge at times, but it is worth the experience.”
So maybe being an experience for everyone really was the kicker?
Or, maybe, it was something else.
In fact, yeah, I can confidently say it was. It’s a game reviewer’s buzzword, but it’s oh-so apt here: polish.
--
The entire experience of playing Kena is smooth. There are no framerate drops, no bugs, no broken quests or puzzles, no desynced dialogue and facial animations. Not a single hiccup to speak of.
The game features exacting archery, precise platforming, telegraphed and accurate hitboxes, as well as an unimpeding camera, responsive and weighty combat and legible visual design that accurately communicates with the player.
You can move through Kena virtually unobstructed (until you come across a puzzle you can’t solve, but that’s your problem, not the game’s). Everything is built carefully and gels together in a cohesion that works so fluidly that playing Kena is simply frictionless.
The game’s developers — Ember Lab — nailed the fundamentals, paid attention to detail and play-tested perfectly. Their effort to go above and beyond saved this game from sinking into the obscurity of being completely and utterly Mid.
--
It’s frictionlessness that elevates Kena beyond itself. It makes the game greater than the sum of its parts. It makes Kena a complete, finished and polished experience.
Kena presents itself like it’s Disney Pixar’s latest goofy-ass, lame-ass, sub-par video game, but lying underneath the childish aesthetic is a challenging and engaging experience that’s not only a boon for all audiences of gamers, but a worthwhile one thanks to its extreme polish and dedication.
You should play it.
