Help with ST7789 display
https://preview.redd.it/3f5trbktl73d1.jpg?width=1204&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a347149512d1b2f3a1ef141a453eb3b4d079e25
I have this 1.3 tft display with an ST7789 driver (from aliexpress) and I can't get it to work. I tried several pins and examples but it doesn't work. The backlight works but it doesn't display anything. Using the the "graphictest" example from the adafruit library for the ST7789 I get the following as output in the serial monitor:
Hello! ST77xx TFT TestInitialized 5273
The first part of the test script looks something like this (I removed the comments and other unnecessary bits):
include // Core graphics library
include // Hardware-specific library for ST7789
include
define TFT_CS 3
define TFT_RST 8// Or set to -1 and connect to Arduino RESET pin
define TFT_DC 7
define TFT_MOSI 11 // Data out
define TFT_SCLK 13 // Clock out
Adafruit_ST7789 tft = Adafruit_ST7789(TFT_CS, TFT_DC, TFT_MOSI, TFT_SCLK, TFT_RST);
The pinout is as shown in the image.
I'm wondering if the display could be broken or if I'm doing something wrong. Has anyone of you had a similar experience with this display?

2024.05.28 20:16 aotdev Defining items and "trivial" combinations. How do you do it?

Sounds like something that one decides early on, but not if you're me! So, here's the problem. I want to have lots of items, and a lot of these items will be simple variations. Examples? I'm not focussing on what they do, you get the idea anyway
Ok, variation fun. Let's say the above Tomes increase the associated skill permanently by 1. What if some scrolls (or potions) increase the skills for, say, 5 minutes? That's another 50 items.
Another item type: weapons! Say we have 10 materials and 20 weapon types. That makes 200 combinations.
Let's pretend for a second that art is not the problem. How do you handle such "trivial" combinations?
I've considered (and over the years, used) a few approaches:
  1. Pregenerate everything in a database. If I want to do a mass change for e.g. 5 minutes to 6 minutes for the skill scrolls, I'd use some custom python
  2. Pregenerate everything in a database, using a script and a more customised input. E.g. I'd have a function that generates all the Tome combinations, a function that generates all elixirs, etc. The result would be a 100% procgen file, that is loaded with the game.
  3. Create all the combinations in the game code directly
Personally, I think (2) is the way to go, especially with some code that can binary-cache the resulting mountain of configurations as it's going to be too slow for loading at runtime.
Which approach do you use and why? Maybe you do something else completely? I'm especially interested if you handle a large number of items and even then your workflow is not a PITA, even for changing/adding item properties besides just adding new items and modifying existing properties

2024.05.28 19:54 Impasia [A4A] Your Stalker Wants Cuddles From You [Nerdy] [Slightly Yandere] [Confession] [Strangers to Lovers] [Introverted Speaker] [Wholesome]

Scriptbin
Note: This script is fine for the recorder to monetize and edit genders or other words. I will only ask for script credit, thank you!
() is for sound effects or actions
** are for emphasis/tone when speaking
... is for a pause, usually when it's the listener's turn to "reply" to a line.
Synopsis:
After meeting a flirty bookworm at the library, you invite them to have coffee at a shop down the street. They seem sweet at first, but it turns out they're a little obsessed with you. In the middle of the night, they break into your home with the intent to sleep with you.
Script Below:
Hey! Do you have a minute? I’d really like to talk to you.

Thanks. You know, I come to this library pretty regularly. But this is my first time seeing you. You’re kind of cute, so I just had to say hi.

I’m not trying to hit on you, I was just trying to make conversation. Sorry, I’m not really good at that. Here, let me change the topic. What books are you picking up?

Science fiction? Ohh, I can talk about that stuff all day. At my house, I keep a huge library filled with basically every genre, but science fiction has gotta be my favorite.

You’re picking up some manga too? I think we can get along just fine. We should sit at a table — I think standing at this library is kind of awkward, don’t you think?

Yeah, it’s just that I’m not used to standing and talking. Usually I’m texting people online or watching anime, so this is really out of my comfort zone. *chuckles*

No, I’m not an otaku. Or, at least I don’t think I am.

Well, let me think. Otakus are typically people who watch a lot of anime, manga, and games. It’s usually all stuff online, but it can be physical media too. It’s especially for people who are at least partially obsessed, and mainly for those who are from Japan. The term was coined in 1983, and…

What? I memorized the whole thing from Wikipedia. But like I said, I’m not an otaku. Maybe I’m a weeb, I dunno.

*scoffs* Of course there’s a difference between being an otaku and a weeb. I’ll explain it to you later. First, I’d like to get to know you. What brings you to this library?

“Just books?” But, you don’t even consider the coffee shop down the street? I love the pastries there. I always order and have it delivered though, I’ve never actually been inside. Talking to random people is just a pain.

I know that’s a little ironic since I just met you, but there’s a huge difference between talking to one normal person versus talking to a cashier. It’s like a boss battle. Actually, speaking of boss battles, I really wanted to hop on Elden Ring. God, I miss my house, and it’s only been like 15 minutes since I got here.

Sorry, I’m rambling. Anyway, like I said, the coffee shop. You’re not even gonna consider it?

What? I can't go in there today, I’d die. Or, maybe not die, but like, crumble emotionally. Which is just as bad, mind you.

When you put it like that, then it’s kind of tempting. Alright, I’ll come, but you’re paying for everything. Finish up renting these books then I’ll follow you.

(Listener and speaker go to a coffee shop)
*Laughter* Oh my god, and that’s why I love rom-coms. The writing is great, the characters are really cheesy, and the whole thing’s just perfect. I’m definitely going to pick that one up, I’m grateful you recommended that to me.

*sigh* I still cannot believe that I’m in this shop. I’ve always been hiding from it, like the cashier’s gonna eat me alive if I enter. But it’s really not too bad.

I’m forgetting something? Like what?

Oh, right. Thanks for convincing me to enter. You should be thanking me too, you know? You wouldn’t have known about this place if I didn’t tell you the best coffee in town is made here.

Mhm. You’re welcome.

Nah, there’s not a lot of special places like this in town. From what I researched it’s been around since the 1800s, family owned and managed, and everything produced is made from scratch. It’s honestly kind of sweet. When you walk in it’s like a mini museum, then they hit you with that smell of coffee beans and buns and donuts.

Yeah, of course I did research on this place. I do research on everything I do. Everyone I meet, as well.

Hm? That isn’t creepy at all. I’m just a bit of a scholar, y’know?

Anyway, I’ve studied this town for the longest time. Ever since I moved here. On the surface, you’d think nothing’s changed, but it’s a pretty developing place. They’re gonna build a park a few miles down from here, for example, but that’s minor stuff. There’s new people moving in, which is always nice to jot down, and the tourists are pretty interesting to research too. I had a lot of fun looking at your file, so much that I had to greet you at least once.

No, I’m not the FBI, what makes you say that? Like I said, I’m a bit of a scholar. And scholars typically do their homework. *chuckles*

You think my laugh is cute..? I, well, uh, thank you. I’m not really used to compliments aside from ones I get online, but this was nice to hear.

Hey, so when I was looking over your file earlier this morning, I couldn’t find your address. Couldn’t find it for the life of me — it honestly pissed me off, since I really have everything except that, which is so weird. So, forgive me for being a little forward about asking, but can I have your address? I’d love to fill out my file completely. Having notes on you is really giving me a shot of dopamine.

Oh, I’m sorry. That was way too invasive. Let me start over: since we’re friends now, and friends hang out together, it would be really helpful if I had your address.

You’re not gonna give it to me? I see.

That’s perfectly fine, nope. You want your privacy respected, I think that’s very reasonable and fair.

You’re like, perfectly fine if I call one of your family members for it though, right? Or a friend?

“No” to that, too? You’re really protective of your house, aren’t you? You’re playing hard to get.

I’m… scaring you? Shit. Shit, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to. It’s just, I can’t remember the last time I was interested in someone. And you’re so kind to almost a complete stranger. I didn’t mean to come off as creepy or anything. I’m not good with words. It’s really an accident.

Please don’t be upset with me. I care about your feelings. Can you accept my apology? I promise to not ask for your address again.

Okay, good. As long as you don’t hate me.

Let’s change the subject. Earlier I told you that there’s a difference between being an otaku and being a weeb. And as I also told you, I’m not much of either. Maybe a little bit of weeb, but I don’t like being called that, even if it’s true.

The thing about otakus and weebs is their amount of dedication, basically. Otakus are a niche variety of nerd, and weebs are a broader term for people who are obsessed with Japanese culture. These days, they basically mean the same thing, but if you’re a nerd you’ll probably notice the difference. One of my biggest pet peeves is when I get called a shut-in, though.
*slightly annoyed* I go outside every three weeks. That doesn’t make me a shut-in. If you’re gonna insult someone online, at least get your facts straight. Ugh.

Huh? You like when I’m ranting like a geek about stuff? Well, good. As long as you’re not upset from earlier. I’m glad I could cheer you up.

Look, I should really get going, but I’m happy I met you today. I’ll check out that rom-com you recommended too. It’ll definitely be on my watchlist. I, uh, already have your number, so I’ll just give you a call if you’re cool with it. No need to ask or anything. See you later.
(Some time passes, and the listener is now in their bed. The speaker can be heard opening the bedroom door)
Hm…

Ah! You’re awake? It’s midnight, you should be asleep.

Wait, wait, wait! Don’t call the cops… I wanted to cuddle with you.

I’m not crazy! Or, I don’t think I am… Maybe I took that rom-com you sent me too seriously. That scene you mentioned where that girl sneaks into her partner’s bed was really cute. It made me want to recreate it once I saw the episode.

How did I get your address?
*embarrassed* Fuck, I really didn’t wanna answer that question. You were supposed to be asleep!

Okay, okay, I owe you an explanation. I did some more digging even after telling you I’d back off earlier. Then, I found it and it turns out you’re only a few blocks down. Everything’s available on the internet, you know. It would be embarrassing for someone like me to not find your address.

Yeah, I know I lied to you. I couldn’t help myself. You are just so irresistible. I liked you when I didn’t know a thing about you, and now I like you even more that I know some stuff about you.

Look, I’m not a creep. I’m not gonna tie you up or chain you to the bed or do something funny with your corpse in the name of love. I just really wanted to cuddle with you. I didn’t bring any rope or handcuffs, so you can trust me.

Alright fine, maybe you can’t trust me. I’m a stalker and a big scary person and whatever you think I am. But please. I’ve literally never cuddled with someone. And I want to do it with you. Since you’re the only person I’ve met who’s even remotely interested in a nerd like me. Give me a chance.

Seriously? Thank you. You won’t regret this at all.
(Blanket sfx)

You’re really warm. Can I… come a little closer to you?

Mm… I see why you have the AC on. You’re like a furnace.

You can be the big spoon, I like it like this.
(Breathing sfx)

Is it weird to say I love you?

Yeah, I thought so. *chuckles*

I think that we should do this more often. Maybe less of the “sneaking in” part, though.

Oh? You liked it? Maybe next time I’ll tie you up, then?

*whisper* You won’t even get a chance to react. *chuckles*

But, seriously. I wanna go on dates with you. Normal ones, and maybe something like this. As long as you’re into it.

We can go on one tomorrow? I think I love you a little more now. I can’t wait for morning…

2024.05.28 19:53 Klutzy_Environment22 Does EILA get better after Episode 1?

I keep seeing people say that they really liked it but after watching episode I unfortunately have to disagree. I like the idea of it and I feel like many parts of the episode had lots of potential but they kept failing to make the most of it. An example for me would be the Open House bit, I feel as if that part either needed to be fully scripted or it needed people who knew how to do good improv. A lot of it was them just pointing at something and being like “that’s weird” and then moving on. The interview felt like a mess too and Jerry constantly interrupting people didn’t help.
Do things seem to change a bit after episode 1 or is this show just not for me?

2024.05.28 19:47 nick0292 Feature Request: Built-in Variable for Script Version in Pine Script

Dear TradingView Team,
I am proposing an enhancement for Pine Script that could significantly improve its functionality for users who employ webhooks in their automated trading strategies. As it stands, Pine Script does not offer a method to automatically include the script version in the JSON payload sent via webhooks. Users currently need to manually hardcode this version number, which can be both error-prone and cumbersome, especially when dealing with multiple script iterations.

2024.05.28 19:28 PorchettoDev Resources, data driven architecture u should plan for. (Also for unity Devs)

Little context:
As a dumb human if things aren't explained like talking to a 5 years old I have difficulties to understand and learn stuff. This happened for Godot too and I almost gave up, but Brackeys coming back from the grave gave me energy to start using Godot again. I'm finding a lot of difficulties to switch to Godot for the big changes that affected my workflow for gamedev, but I'm scraping by on little things, the problem is that one the most important things is not covered almost anywhere for godot, which is architecture, a plan for your game to become easily scalable in the future.
One thing that Unity has, are scriptable objects, they were so good for planning a data driven modular game architecture. Easy scalability and easy debbugging. JUST PURE GOLD.
In Godot we got Resources, which are basically scriptable objects, u can use them for planning a data driven modular game architecture. Easy scalability and easy debbugging. JUST PURE GOLD.
Then where is the problem?
Almost NOBODY talks about them on how to use them for a scalable architecture. There is a good article I found which covers the basics of this way of thinking and explain it really well (I'll leave links below), but it misses a great thing that adds a ton of modularity, Signals, for Unity people Events.
So I tried to convert what is shown in the Unite 2017 talk (God bless Ryan Hipple) from Unity to Godot, and had success in my madness.
I'll leave the github link to the project with the code so you can look at it and if u find it useful use it in your projects and share the sacred words of modularity in the godot community.
Here I'll try to explain a little bit what I found out. Basically u can do the same thing as it is showed in the unite 2017 talk (God bless Ryan Hipple), but in Godot u can achieve the same result with much less effort it seems. I Unity and C# u must subscribe methods to events, which is Signal connection in Godot, but u also HAVE to unsubscribe them in code when, for example, u destroy a game object (node) who subscribed to an event. Since the unsubscring part seems not necessary in Godot for what I read here and there (Godot should handle it automagically) we can do much less steps in the process.
How?
Well, Resources can store Signals, u must have a reference to the resource in a script, the u can connect the function u want to the signal through code, then when u need it u call the emit function, and everything that is connected to the Resource signal will execute something.
The label stuff I won't explain since it's already explained in the article I'll leave below, read the article, watch the Unite 2017 talk (God bless Ryan Hipple).
U'll see the code has also another way to handle the matter, this is because I translated almost 1:1 what is said in the Unite 2017 talk (God bless Ryan Hipple), first, then I tried with the only signal way.
If you have questions post below, if I can help with them I'll be glad to.
IMPORTANT: if you have deeper knowledge about resources pls share it, it would be very helpful.

2024.05.28 19:27 Undeadraver00 Zoho Analytics expert

Zoho Analytics expert
Ok so I have an issue with Zoho Analytics and been on calls with support and they are not able to help me.

So, we plan to use Zoho people to get the time logs from our employees.
But the way we do the payroll is a bit more complicated than what Zoho people offers.
So, let’s say for example an employee makes 30 hours. If he works Monday to Friday from 18:00 to 23:00 he get’s an extra dollar per hours. If he works weekend 6:00 to 23:00 et get 1.50 extra. If people work from 23:00 to 6:00 they get 2 dollars.

So, to be able to do the following I am using Zoho Analytics and I get the table Time Logs from Zoho People.
Now at first the time are not even in time format, so I need to reformat all the time/date. After I made 4 new columns and did some math in them to get the time for each type of time from normal, weeknights, nights, and weekend.
I did something like this to convert the FROM time and the To Time.
convert_to_datetime(concat("Formated date",' ',"From Time"),'dd MM yyyy HH:mm')
After to calculate the hours for the nights I did something like this.
(business_minutes("Converted From Time", "Converted To Time" , '23:00:00', '24:00:00', '0000000')+business_minutes("Converted From Time", "Converted To Time" , '0:00:00', '7:00:00', '0000000'))/60
Needed to do it in 2 parts as 23:00,06:00 doesn’t work you need to make it in 2 parts.

So, all of this is working fine I get the report so the people can do the payroll.

Now my issue is that once the entry as been paid they need to flag the time log as being treated. So, I need to have a way to run script to update the tables but update only what is being shown in the reports. Because we have filters and other stuff.

https://preview.redd.it/l7910aafc73d1.png?width=1944&format=png&auto=webp&s=2dd524442b3cdf8ff03ccf778237cf073152795c

So, in this example I would need a button around where the arrow is that would take all these entries and update the table in the back so that I could auto filter for those to never show again like the column would be called TREADTED and I would mark is as True.

But I ran out of idea and being told it’s impossible to have way for the user running the report to interact with those entry.

Looking for help badly on this. The entire time log entry from Zoho People is so lack luster and ran out of idea on how to fix it.
If this is unclear or you need more information, please feel free to ask questions.

Note: English is not my primary language sorry.

Anyway, I hope TV’s product design team will see this and at least fix the bugs. But I would be extremely appreciative if they could implement at least some of the features above.

The survivor adrenaline kicking in to counter your introverted flee instincts must be giving you a bit more nerve than usual. Tell you what? You focus that into charming the lovely folks arriving, and we can argue later when you’re setting out a sleeping bag for me next to your bed?”

[Before you can retort, he affixes you with an intense stare, knocking the words out of your brain. His voice is just as intense for his next sentence before he goes back to his normal gruffness:]
“...You could let me sleep with you instead, of course…”
[. . . ???]
[He laughs]
“Pfft, your face. Go to bed. Don’t make me chase you up there.”

[You barely remember falling asleep. You’re still barely awake. That’s why it takes you a moment to realize you have acquired a cuddle buddy, of sorts. He’s slipping into bed behind you, cuddled up as though it’s a normal event]
“Mmmh…:”
[. . . ?]
“Mmh…? Nnh, go back to sleep, sweetie…”
[... Pause.]
[You roll over to look at him in disbelief. His eyes aren’t even open]
“Mmmh warm…”
[P-Pause…]
“...No sleep bag, thank you.”
[. . . ? ]
“Nuhh, I’m gonna stay here… Warm… Smells nice…”
[You’ve heard the word ‘flabbergasted’ many times in your life but never have you felt it so perfectly that it could be the picture in the dictionary]
[SFX: The bed shifting a bit as he cozies up]
[Pause…]
[He nuzzles closer, voice startling soft compared to its normal gruffness]
“Sshh… It’s OK, baby, go back to sleep…”
[He somewhat slurs it together but the ‘baby’ makes you stop. Flabbergasted]
[???]
“Shh… I’ve got you… You rest, you did a good job with your little party. Oh my god it was so cute, you’re so cute when you’re freaking out but acting through it.”
[Pause????]
“M’ feeling fine… Just dunk. Drunk. D-R-U-N… drunk…”
[. . . ]
“I am a very affectionate dunk, yes… Mmh, you feel really nice to hold… S’ not fair, you know? Always walking around in those shorts, pasty-ass Nerd legs just reflecting the sun and such… Your brother says he’ll kick my ass if I go after you, you know…”
[Pause…?]
[SFX: A slight snore from him]
[Pause????]
“Nuhhh… Ahm not that asleep… I love you…”
[. . . . ]
[Amused, you tousle his hair a little bit and play along]
“Mmhm, I put the kids to bed… Wish I had their energy, you know? They make me feel old as… dust.”
[Pause <3]
“I ‘ppreciate all the sacrifices you’ve made, too… Being a monster-fighting spy pilot s’ hard work…”
[...]
“Mmhm, pancakes sound really good… I could fry up some chicken in a really good Korean BBQ rub I have and we could just get MESSED up on calories…”
[P-Pause]
“Mmrlr…. Why are you giggling? Giggly thing…”
[Pause…]
“Whaaaat? ‘I’m not normally this nice?’ You’re not normally this brutal to my feelings… I am too, nice! Rackum frackum…”
[He nuzzles back into your neck, cutting your giggles into a slight gasp]
[Pause!]
“Yeah, nuzzling up to your neck got you to quit laughing… Mmh… You really do smell nice…”
[Pause…]
“Yeah, you can pet my hair, that’s cool. Totally cool… Mmh, hehe, I knew you’d scratch my head like I was a dog the second you got a chance. Nerd.”
[P-Pause!]
“It is really good conditioner, thank you… Mmh… Thank you for petting my hair, even though you’re super awkward about it…”
[. . . ? ]
“Am I sleep?”
[He pauses and, for a moment, you think you have your answer before he lets out a massive snore]
[SFX: A big old snore]
[. . . ]
[You look at him in abject disbelief as he snores against you, in a weird space between sleep and wake]
“Am sleep…”
[. . . ]
“Hey, good night, beautiful~”.
[He tries to kiss you but it sort of just lands on your chin before he curls right back up in his supernatural coma]
[P-Pause…]
[You’re somewhat pinned under him…. And the party still somewhat rages downstairs. You can’t decide which is theoretically worse - someone opening the door or him waking up and realizing what he’s said…]
[SFX: Fade out on the slightly muffled party ambiance]
[To be continued?]
Note: I am taking name suggestions for this colossal goober~

2024.05.28 19:06 Ready-Judge-3131 Carina and Mr Manning - 8 Pages

Hello, I recently posted a tv pilot onto here (I realise now how much improvement I need). I am now just playing around with screenwriting and trying my best to learn and improve! I have been advised to improve the following:
-Character name consistency
-Introducing characters
-Setting
-Reducing parenthetical directions
-Story structure
-Better character motivations
I have tried my best to touch on all these areas without working on something too overwhelming.
Alongside this I would like some advice if possible on
A) How to reduce the amount of he/she. Are they okay to use a lot? Is there a replacement I can use/better alternative?
B) How do I cut down on action lines effectively? Can I say for example ‘She sits, opens soda.” Instead of “She sits, opening the soda.” Is that considered lazy writing?
C) If I am writing direction lines that include scene changes e.g there is a part of this small script where at one minute I talk about Carina being in the study and then make an off note comment about her teacher walking into the classroom being happy (then I go straight back to the study) do I insert a scene to break up the action lines? Is there a better way to write it than what I currently have done?
Many thanks, any comments/critiques are greatly appreciated!

2024.05.28 18:25 stice2000 Does this position exists in IT (and what would it be called)?

This may be the first in a series of questions as I try to pinpoint my next step in IT.
I have had something of a meandering career in IT, but the job I got the most satisfaction from was working for a system administration team writing scripts and user interfaces to make their jobs easier. For example:
What seems like it was unique about this position is that there doesn't seem to be much emphasis in the industry on process improvement (at least not to the degree that there are people dedicated to seeing it done). The closest thing I have come across as an industry role would be Application Administrator (I have also heard "Product Owner"). This is what I would go for if I couldn't find something more in line with what I described above.
So, the question is, are there jobs out there that are dedicated to process improvement in the vein of what I have described above, and if so, what is the position title for such a job?
Failing that, are there career paths that any of you would recommend for a person like me who is willing to learn any language to feed my passion for efficiency and the automation of the mundane?

2024.05.28 18:16 BeanDropbug Does this happen to anyone else?

So I've been only acting for about three or four years and I do theater mostly for some background. Whenever we are asked to put on a mini skit or play out a small scene (say for auditions or something) I always mess it up. We get time to practice obviously and so I utilize it and I will practice the scene. Usually it happens with other people only but when I get up there for the actual part of presenting it I mess it up.
One example was for an audition. It was a great scene and me and two other people went out into the hall to practice it before presenting it. We did great and when we went to present it, note I wasn't that nervous, I had to keep glancing back at the lines and I kept messing them up despite when doing it minutes before flawlessly without needing to look at the script peice.
Is it just nerves? Everytime I do it I feel like I mess up my entire group and I feel so bad about it. Any advice?

2024.05.28 17:51 LEX_Reception How can a bilingual answering service help you get more customers?

If you’re based in a country or region with more than one language, a bilingual answering service creates a wider audience for your business. For example, LEX Reception offers a 24/7 Spanish-speaking answering service for firms based in the US, where 13% of all citizens use Spanish as their first language. Covering call answering, appointment booking, messaging, and custom scripts, a bilingual answering service opens up a new pool of potential customers who are looking to book in their own language.

2024.05.28 17:22 Adventurous_Spell180 Movies that straddle the line between homemade and professional feeling

I don’t know how to describe exactly what I mean, and now that I’m getting around to posting this I’m blanking on probably many of the best examples of it, but there’s a certain approach to filmmaking where the acting, film quality, etc have a vaguely semi-professional and amateurish quality (for example, maybe brief stutters/slipups in the dialogue delivery won’t get edited out) that often ends up feeling more real to me. Movies like:
  1. River of Grass
  2. Old Joy
  3. Losing Ground
  4. Symbiopsychotaxiplasm
  5. John Waters through the ‘70s
  6. Chameleon Street to a certain degree
  7. Evolution of a Filipino Family (the acting is actually very professional here, but the scenes feel very much like real life)
Often these will have a vaguely campy feel due to the overall production quality although they may deal with serious subjects — I’ll probably have to edit this as I think of better examples but maybe this will be enough to give a start.

2024.05.28 17:09 welp007 CFTC Fines J.P. Morgan Securities — a Fed Primary Dealer — $100 Million for Failing to Surveil Potential Spoofing and High Frequency Trading for Eight Years 🔥

CFTC Fines J.P. Morgan Securities — a Fed Primary Dealer — $100 Million for Failing to Surveil Potential Spoofing and High Frequency Trading for Eight Years 🔥
By Pam Martens and Russ Martens: May 28, 2024 ~
How does a Wall Street trading firm gain competitive advantage to entice spoofers and high-frequency trading firms to use its trading platforms instead of those of its competitors? How about having its trading compliance personnel wear a blindfold as billions of trades occur over the span of 8 or 9 years?
That is essentially what three of JPMorgan Chase’s federal regulators have suggested is behind the $448 million in fines they’ve leveled against three separate units of the largest bank in the United States.
When JPMorgan Chase filed its quarterly report with the Securities and Exchange Commission on May 1, it sheepishly admitted that the $348 million it had already paid out to two of its regulators for trading violations was not the end of this saga. It said that it “expects to enter into a resolution with a third U.S. regulator that will require the Firm to, among other things, pay a civil penalty of $100 million….”
Last Thursday, ahead of a long holiday weekend, that third regulator, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), released its statement and imposed a fine of $200 million – which magically became $100 million by giving this five-count felon bank a $100 million credit for settling with the two other regulators. (If that makes zero sense to you, welcome to the Kafkaesque world of Wall Street and regulatory capture.)
The two federal banking regulators that imposed the earlier trading fines in March were the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), which fined JPMorgan Chase Bank $250 million, while the Federal Reserve fined the bank holding company $98.2 million. The OCC said the misconduct occurred since at least 2019. The Federal Reserve said the bank had engaged in the misconduct over the span of nine years, from 2014 to 2023.
The CFTC took the position that the misconduct had occurred for eight years, from 2014 through 2021, and had involved “billions” of trades where a JPMorgan trading unit had failed to provide any surveillance.
The CFTC’s charges were directed at J.P. Morgan Securities LLC – a registered futures commission merchant and swap dealer with the CFTC as well as a broker-dealer registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
But far more problematic, J.P. Morgan Securities LLC is also one of the Federal Reserve’s “Primary Dealers,” whom the Fed relies upon to conduct its so-called “open market” operations.
The word “open” has also become one of those Kafkaesque terms when filtered through the carefully scripted reverse-speak of the Federal Reserve. J.P. Morgan Securities LLC received $2.9 trillion in secret, cumulative repo loans from the Fed in the fourth quarter of 2019 (adjusted for the term of the loan). This bailout was not revealed to the American people for two years by the Fed. When the data was finally released by the Fed, there was a total news blackout by mainstream media.
In September 2020, the U.S. Department of Justice charged JPMorgan Chase with two criminal felony counts for fraudulent activity in the precious metals market and the U.S. Treasury market. The CFTC was also involved in the settlement of those charges against the bank in 2020.
The CFTC’s Order last Thursday on its most recent charges against the bank suggests that it didn’t have the full picture from JPMorgan in 2020. The CFTC wrote:
“In September 2020, JPM entered into a settlement with the Commission to resolve allegations of spoofing, attempted manipulation of the trading of precious metals and U.S. Treasury futures contracts, and failure to supervise its trade surveillance system. In connection with that settlement, JPM represented that it was ‘[r]evising its trade . . . surveillance programs, for example JPM’s systems now surveil trades on over . . . 40 futures and options exchanges’ and that ‘JPM also continues to refine its spoofing surveillance, modifying its spoofing parameters in response to lessons learned . . . and currently uses three primary alert types within SMARTS [a third-party trade surveillance system] to detect potential spoofing and layering.’ ”
But now the CFTC learns that JPMorgan’s failure to surveil “billions” of trades continued into 2021. The CFTC writes in its release last Thursday:
“The magnitude of the gaps in JPM’s surveillance was large: On DCM-1, for example, JPM failed to ingest into its surveillance systems—and thus failed to surveil—billions of order messages from 2014 through 2021. Accordingly, JPM failed to surveil more than 99% of order messages on DCM-1 during that time period, which, according to JPM, largely consisted of sponsored access trading activity for three significant algorithmic trading firms.”
What is an “algorithmic trading firm”? It frequently means a hedge fund that uses algorithms to trade. It can also mean high frequency trading firms. This is how Senator Elizabeth Warren described high frequency trading at a Senate hearing on June 18, 2014:
“For me the term high frequency trading seems wrong. You know this isn’t trading. Traders have good days and bad days. Some days they make good trades and they make lots of money and some days they have bad trades and they lose a lot of money. But high frequency traders have only good days.
“In its recent IPO filing, the high frequency trading firm, Virtu, reported that it had been trading for 1,238 days and it had made money on 1,237 of those days…The question is that high frequency trading firms aren’t making money by taking on risks. They’re making money by charging a very small fee to investors. And the question is whether they’re charging that fee in return for providing a valuable service or they’re charging that fee by just skimming a little money off the top of every trade…
“High frequency trading reminds me a little of the scam in [the movie] ‘Office Space.’ You know, you take just a little bit of money from every trade in the hope that no one will complain. But taking a little bit of money from zillions of trades adds up to billions of dollars in profits for these high frequency traders and billions of dollars in losses for our retirement funds and our mutual funds and everybody else in the market place. It also means a tilt in the playing field for those who don’t have the information or have the access to the speed or big enough to play in this game.”
Adding to the perception that the American people are only seeing a tiny speck of sunlight into what JPMorgan Chase is paying $448 million to keep secret, is the fact that the federal agency charged with oversight of stock exchanges and securities trading – the Securities and Exchange Commission – appears to have gone missing in this matter.
The OCC – the federal regulator of federally-insured banks operating across state lines – wrote in its consent order against JPMorgan Chase’s federally-insured bank in March that: “The consequences of these deficiencies include the Bank’s failure to surveil billions of instances of trading activity on at least 30 global trading venues.”
The SEC cannot investigate trading inside a federally-insured bank. The SEC supervises securities exchanges, securities broker-dealers, investment advisors, and mutual funds. This raises the question, has JPMorgan Chase intentionally moved vast amounts of its trading inside its federally-insured bank to avoid the snooping eyes of the SEC?
That further raises the equally troubling question: do Americans want taxpayer-backstopped banks to be trading on “30 global banking venues”?
The answer is clearly “no” given that this is the same bank that gambled with depositors’ money in London in 2012, making hundreds of billions of dollars in high risk derivative trades, and losing $6.2 billion of depositors’ money according to an in-depth investigation and 300-page report from the U.S. Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.

2024.05.28 16:30 Alarmed-Radio9182 C#/Unity Coders - Set Up Time, Script Compiling Time, and General Observations

Just wondering if anyone else feels the same way about doing C# or has any advice to speed things up.
I’ve noticed that C# related prompts overall take way more time than something like Python. With Python, you can easily just copy and paste their responses into an IDE and run it and see if it works, and most of the prompts you’d give barely require any set up. For C# in Unity, even basic scripts can take so long to set up and check and debug.
For example, I might need a game object with a rigid body, or scriptable object, or a canvas with some text or a slider so you have to make them and assign them in the inspector, which is a little time. But the worst part is that it takes so long to create new C# scripts since when you create it the domain reloads, then it does it again when you rename it, then it’s twice for each response, then it reloads when you save the script in visual studio, then you have to assign things in the inspector, then play test both scripts, then sometimes debug which means a few more times waiting through various loading screens. It just feels bad when I know I could do a python related task in like half the time.
I could just read the script and see what problems it has, if any, but the instructions always say to test it.
I know there’s a package or a plug in for fast script saving, and I could turn off domain reloading for play mode but my input system breaks if I do that.
I was also wondering how much set up you might include in what you’re reporting. If the prompt assumes there’s certain game objects with certain other scripts involved, do you bill them for time spent setting these up or do you only report time spent actually writing a prompt and testing/debugging it?
I also usually pause my timer if I ever have to check the documentation to be sure of something but I also don’t know if I should or not.

2024.05.28 16:29 OnDasher808 Boomers and jokes that aren't jokes to service staff

I've worked front of house at restaurants in an area with alot of tourists. One of the things I hated most were the old guys who once they were sat would interrupt the welcome script that was required by management (for liability reasons) and ask a really pointed or awkward question.
For example after saying to be careful not to touch the grill surface because it would get hot they might say something like, "Well what would you do if I touch it anyway and burned myself, would we all get free meals?" Usually after giving a safe answer like, "I can get the general manager if you want to speak to them about it" they would laugh and said something like, "It's just a joke, don't take it so seriously." However, I did have one say something like, "Forget it, I know you don't have the authority to do anything about it anyway."
It always seemed to be a stupid power play to score points in a game that no one else is playing or even knows exists. Usually their kids looked like they wanted to shrivel up and die but the other boomers think it is the funniest thing they've ever heard.
To be fair I once had a table of college frat boy types sitting at the table after closing and after every other table has left and heard them say, "Hey, we're the only ones here. You know what would be funny? If we just sat here because they can't leave until we do!" They they proceeded to sit there while 3 of us and a manager stood there waiting until they finally got bored and left 45 min later. Still, that was only once and boomers used to do that once every month or two.

2024.05.28 16:19 akaricane Using audio in electron app

Hello everyone, I use Tone.js in my current electron application but I have issues with its implementation.
My two pain points are: audio glitches impairing overall playback master of my audio chain + authorization/permission on production version. I'll explain.
Note: it is basically working, but the end result is definitely not perfect and seamless.
I develop on Mac OS with a basic setup: computer + external sound card + speakers. I properly routed my virtual audio in order to effectively access the audio stream in my electron app (Spotify audio for example). However I keep having audio glitches that are hearable via my speakers, despite using
Tone.Destination.volume.value = -Infinity
I also have this in my preload script:
navigator.mediaDevices .getUserMedia({ audio: true }) .then(function (stream) { /* use the stream */ }) .catch(function (err) { /* handle the error */ console.log('Error requesting media devices: ', err) })
Also, in production, the built app has access to the audio on windows but not on Mac OS (don't have the yellow/orange mic icon active, where it is in dev). I am pretty confident it is linked to app permissions which are the following (entitlements.mac.plist)
    com.apple.security.cs.allow-jit com.apple.security.cs.allow-unsigned-executable-memory com.apple.security.cs.allow-dyld-environment-variables com.apple.security.files.user-selected.read-write com.apple.security.files.bookmarks.app-scope com.apple.security.files.bookmarks.document-scope com.apple.security.network.client com.apple.security.network.server
as well as my electron-builder.yaml, Mac / DMG section:
mac: entitlements: build/entitlements.mac.plist entitlementsInherit: build/entitlements.mac.plist icon: 'build/logo.png' extendInfo: NSCameraUsageDescription: "Application requests access to the device's camera." NSMicrophoneUsageDescription: "Application requests access to the device's microphone." NSDocumentsFolderUsageDescription: "Application requests access to the user's Documents folder." NSDownloadsFolderUsageDescription: "Application requests access to the user's Downloads folder." NSLocalNetworkUsageDescription: 'Application needs to send and receive data over the network.' dmg: artifactName: app-${version}.${ext}
My point is: is it fixable somehow ? Would you consider changing technology to use another lib in renderer, even main ?
My application only needs to access the audio stream which is then converted in an Audio react module (link audio behavior to three.js visuals) and Audio Visualization (display spectrum for example).
Thanks for your time
